Gifts from beyond

‘Grandma’ has gone, she has passed, and ‘Grandad’ has dementia – he has lost the concept of Christmas. Sadly. But the magic of Christmas isn’t lost, because somehow gifts from the grandparents to their eight and 10-year-old granddaughters keep on arriving. They’re under the tree every year. “With all our love…” read the gift tags.

The presents are Mum’s work. “I want the girls to still feel loved by them. I want to keep the memory alive.” It help keeps Mum’s memories alive too. And it works. The kids are happy to believe. They never question the gifts from Grandma and Grandad.

In return they hand-make Christmas cards – Grandad will be delivered his.

Grandma’s will be left on her grave in the Far North. She will sense it.

‘Tis the season of new life, fa-la-la-la-la, so I’m excited to share news of another birth in the family. An early Christmas blessing. It was a long gestation – eight-and-a-half years. An African elephant, with the longest pregnancy in the animal kingdom, could have produced four calves in that time. I was warned though. The woman at the garden centre told me the Poor Knights lily probably wouldn’t blossom for about eight years. “So likely not in my lifetime?”

I said in 2017. She looked me over and offered a prognosis: “You might be okay”. So whenever I walked past the plant I told it to hurry, that I’m running out of time. Then a few weeks ago, the lily burst forth, and I’d survived to see it. ‘Nice.’

‘Nice’ is landing plonk in the middle of a brussels sprouts patch and discovering you don’t mind the little green globules of ghastliness when they’re served up with understanding and humour. A friend said he had a belly full of thunder when he rang a company to complain. He expected to be answered by a call centre in the Philippines.

Instead he landed in that brussels sprouts patch – in Oamaru. Karen took his call, and she did give a damn. She just needed to ask a personal question to confirm his ID. “Like your grandmother’s shoe size,” she laughed. “Seven-and-a-half,” he replied.

Karen hooted and said she was enjoying his complaint already. Nana’s small feet suddenly became more important than data, texting, minutes and moans. They talked Saturday nights out, Oamaru’s cashless parking meters, the grandstand’s new paint

There’s a promo for the Salvation Army Christmas appeal playing on TV. “If you can give, give what you can” – the music bed is a Sally brass band playing ‘Silent Night’, a tune meant for rich and warm brass. It reminds of times when a Sally band playing ‘Silent Night’ would coast down our street on the back of an old, open deck, Bedford truck. Carols delivered to the door. The entire street would turn out, Catholics, Presbyterians and everyone in between, to listen, mingle, talk and slop milky warm tea, and enjoy.

Who stopped that practice? Then the Sallies would get on cleaning up the aftermath of Christmas – the debt, family abuse, alcohol abuse. Good ‘nice’ people.

It was a gift that unwrapped itself, was waiting to be discovered. Some kid with a nose for the extreme, chucked himself off the Chapel St bridge into the harbour for a thrill. An attraction was born. Because, it seems, every other kid in Ōtūmoetai followed him, every summer, all summer, ever since. Something for nothing, always open, always a thrill. It’s ‘nice’.

As they say, Christmas is a smelly old sock stuffed full of sweet stuff. Enjoy muchly.

Marking 75 years since Ranui tragedy

A memorial service will be held at Mount Maunganui at 10am on Sunday, December 28, to mark 75 years since the Ranui capsized, claiming the lives of 22 people.

The commemoration will take place along the Mauao Base Track, past North Rock, facing Karewa Island, where a plaque marks the wreck site. The vessel’s 63hp diesel engine remains visible among the rocks at low tide.

The Ranui, a 13-metre kauri launch owned by charter operator Jerry Williams, was on its maiden voyage to Tūhua (Mayor Island) when it capsized in heavy seas while attempting to re-enter Tauranga Harbour. There were 23 people on board. Only one survived –

19-year-old deckhand Phillip ‘Bluey’ Smith.

Colleen Killeen, who was 10 years old at the time, lost both her father Ivan Penwarden and her uncle Lloyd Penwarden in the tragedy.

“As a family, we hold a commemoration every year,” Killeen said. “When we go around there and put flowers on the rock, people always ask: ‘What’s going on?’ and so you end up telling them.”

Killeen said she has long believed the site deserves greater recognition.

“I don’t know why there has never been a sign with the names of those who died put up there,” she said.

This year’s 75th commemoration would include a short service led by funeral celebrant Mike Savage, who will also read aloud the names of

those lost. Attendees will be invited to sign shells collected from the beach and return them to the water in tribute.

Low tide is at 9am, allowing the Ranui’s engine block to be seen among the rocks before the service begins. If harbour traffic allows, a tugboat is expected to sound its horn at 10am in tribute, as it did during the 50th anniversary commemoration.

“The harbour board said if there’s no ships needing to come in, they’ll send a tug out,” Killeen said.

She remembers the moment her family realised something was wrong on the evening of December 28, 1950.

“It was about six o’clock. A friend had called in to see my dad because we were here on holiday.

Grandmother’s return to yes Marion’s knees had started making decisions for her. And those decisions seemed to always be a ‘no’.

No to coffee with friends. No to the Saturday market. No to the walking group she’d loved for years. At 72, the grandmother found herself declining more invitations than she accepted.

“It wasn’t dramatic,” Marion explains.

“My knees just wouldn’t cooperate. I’d wake up stiff as a board every morning. By the time I got going, half the day was gone.

By afternoon, I was done.”

The invitations kept coming at first. But when you say no enough times, people stop asking.

“That’s when I realised my world had gotten smaller. I wasn’t seeing friends. I wasn’t going places. I was slipping out of my own life without really noticing.”

Nothing ages you faster than missing out.

Marion could feel it happening, becoming someone who “used to” do things. Used to meet friends for coffee. Used to go into the mall. Used to take the grandchildren out.

“The ‘used to’ was the scary part,” she admits. “I was 72, not 92. But my knees were making me live like I was much older.”

She’d tried various approaches but nothing quite took the edge off when she needed it.

Warning to keep dogs leashed at Waihī Beach A distraction caused by an off-leash dog has been blamed for the deaths of two dotterel chicks in nests on Waihī Beach.

According to wildlife protection group Dot Watch, the deaths occurred in a protected nesting area during a 30-minute period at Brighton Reserve while trained conservation volunteers were monitoring nesting pairs and newly hatched chicks.

The reserve is a designated wildlife protection area, clearly marked with signage and temporary tape requiring dogs to be kept on leads.

Dot Watch coordinator Susan Lean said one adult dotterel was caring for three chicks near the basketball court area.

“The chicks were named George II, Fredrick and Clark, in honour of the late George Clark, whose love for these birds was unwavering,” Lean said.

“The family had been gradually widening its territory, which is normal behaviour as chicks grow and begin to forage.”

Shortly afterwards, a man entered the protected area with a terrier off-lead, despite visible signage, Lean said.

“They asked the man to leash his dog and pointed out the chicks nearby. He said: ‘I can’t see any birds’ and added he would leash his dog when ‘we sort out the cats because cats kill more birds’.”

The interaction diverted the volunteer’s attention for several minutes. When monitoring resumed, two of the three chicks were missing, said Lean. “The seagulls were still harassing the mother, but she now had only one chick.”

The loss followed a recent death of one of Waihī Beach’s oldest and “most loved” male dotterels, which was found dead near its nest and is believed to have been crushed into the grass.

“The death of this male left the mother to protect those three tiny chicks on her own for days.

“She was starving as she couldn’t leave the nest until they hatched,” Lean said.

“It comes at the worst possible time.”

During the monitoring shift, the adult bird became distressed while repeatedly fending off several red-billed gulls.

“Although gulls are not a primary predator of dotterel chicks, sustained harassment can separate chicks from adults and leave them vulnerable.”

Lean said a volunteer intervened

Lean said the Dot Watch tamariki team, whose plea for awareness aired on Seven Sharp just days earlier, were devastated. Camera footage is being reviewed, and the bird’s body was sent to the Department of Conservation for examination.

The tricks to stay safe f around d water The Weekend Sun is running a series of eight 'Summer Smart' stories with our good friend Elfie the Circus Elf helping us to keep safe and healthy these Christmas holidays.

Today's Summer Smart #5 is on staying safe around water.

There’s nothing more Kiwi than cooling off in the water – and with the Bay of Plenty’s beautiful beaches, rivers, and backyard pools, it’s the go-to way to beat the heat.

But water can be unforgiving, and each year New Zealanders drown – often within metres of

safety. Many of these tragedies are preventable with a few simple rules.

Do you have a pool at home?

Ensure gates are self-closing and fences meet legal height and latch rules.

Drownings can happen in under 30 seconds, especially in toddlers and young children, so remember to always watch kids around water. Actively supervising young ones means your eyes must be on the children, not scrolling your phone.

D Designate a water watcher h at parties or barbecues, use lifejackets near rivers, lakes and boats, and teach children to swim and float.

Remember to save the drinks for dry land.

Alcohol and swimming don’t mix – it affects your balance, reaction time and decision-making, even more so in the sun. People underestimate how tired they are after a few drinks and a swim, and that’s when accidents happen.

Lifeguards patrol beaches like Mount Main Beach, Tay St, Ōmanu, and Pāpāmoa during summer, with times varying by

location and day. Swimming between the flags is not just a suggestion – it’s your safest zone on a surff b beach. h The patrol areas are set up based on daily conditions, so if you’re outside them, lifeguards can’t see you easily, and rips can catch you out fast.

The signs of a rip

It’s important to know the signs of a rip because they are responsible for many beach rescues. Look for calm-looking patches with few breaking waves, rippling water or darker channels, and sand being pulled back out.

If caught in a rip stay calm, float, raise your hand, and don’t try to swim against it. The rip can

take you out, and then you can swim sideways. Are you going boating or paddling? Prepare first b before f h heading d out on kkayaks, k paddleboards or boats – always wear a lifejacket, check the marine forecast, log your trip with Coastguard or tell someone your plan, and bring a means of communication such as a waterproof phone pouch or VHF. The best rescue is the one Surf Life Saving New Zealand never has to do. Rescues amid The Fox show why funds needed Even as top Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox was helping raise funds for two Waihi Beach charities last weekend, the charities themselves were out saving lives.

The sixth running of The Fox, presented

by Shimano Fishing NZ, raised $60,800 for the Waihī Beach Surf Lifesaving Club and the Waihī Beach Coastguard, with 25 teams spending a day fishing on Sunday and a day playing golf on Monday.

What really made things meaningful for the world No 38 golfer and two-time PGA Tour winner in 2025 was seeing the emergency services in action, putting those charity dollars to the best use imaginable.

As the tournament began Saturday night at the surf club, veteran Waihī Beach lifeguard Christiaan Maarhuis was saving a young girl’s life while out training in the waves.

And during fishing on Sunday, the new Gallagher Rescue patrol boat – partially funded by the tournament – made two emergency calls to help boaties in trouble.

Event director, Sports Inc’s Kelsen Butler, said the Saturday night rescue, the marlin catch and the stunning weather had turned it into one of the most memorable editions of the tournament yet, while support from the local community and teams involved continued to grow.

“Everything seemed to align this time around, especially coming on the back of Foxy’s extraordinary break-through year,” Butler said.

“It’s amazing that he continues to make time for this tournament but when he sees first-hand what a difference it makes in a community he loves, it’s one of those feelgood stories. It’s also really heart-warming to see so many businesses and supporters from around New Zealand and further afield come together to raise much-needed funds.”

Bringing hope and health across the Pacific As 2025 draws to a close, YWAM Ships Aotearoa is reflecting on a year marked by growth, deepening partnerships, and meaningful impact across the Pacific and New Zealand.

Managing director Marty Emmett said volunteer teams reached 5136 patients throughout Pacific nations and provided care to more than 1400 patients across New Zealand.

“In total, more than 31,000 individual health services were delivered in 2025 – ranging from dental and optical care to maternity services, health education, and clean water initiatives,” Emmett said.

“Each number represents more than a statistic. It’s a life touched, a community strengthened, and a story of hope renewed.”

New patron

The organisation’s medical ship, YWAM KOHA, which returned to Tauranga two months ago, played a central role in two major milestones this year.

One was the appointment of a new patron, Ioane Naivalurua, Fiji’s Minister of Policing and Communication.

“We were honoured to welcome Minister Naivalurua,” Emmett said.

“His support underscores the deepening partnership between YWAM Ships Aotearoa and the people of Fiji.”

Tuvalu

Another highlight was the organisation’s first-ever outreach to Tuvalu, expanding its reach to a new Pacific nation. During

the mission, the YWAM KOHA crew and volunteers delivered 126 water tanks to improve access to safe drinking water and provided 345 essential health services to local families.

Emmett emphasised that none of this work would be possible without the dedication of volunteers, donors, and supporters.

“To every doctor, nurse, captain, engineer, deckhand, cook, and partner – thank you,” he said.

“Your generosity has helped bring vital care to some of the most isolated communities in the Pacific.”

In November the Trinity Koha Dental Clinic’s work in Tauranga continued with volunteer dentists providing care to 45 people and giving away $32,000 worth of treatment.

Looking ahead, YWAM KOHA will undergo drydock in Auckland, a crucial step to extend the ship’s operational life.

While there, the organisation would host public tours, offering the community a firsthand look at how the ship operates

and the impact it makes. Following drydock, the vessel will return to Fiji for further outreaches.

Closer to home, the Tauranga-based Trinity Koha dental team will continue providing oral health services across the Bay of Plenty and South Waikato.

“The level of local support for YWAM is incredible,” Tauranga MP Sam Uffindell said. “Many people give their time and

resources to change other people’s lives, bless them all.”

A guide to enjoy summer in WBOP From library opening hours and rubbish collections, to freedom camping, dog walking, and cycle trails, Western Bay of Plenty District Council has put together a summer guide to help people make the most of the festive season.

Libraries

Libraries and service centres at Barkes Corner, Katikati, Te Puke, Ōmokoroa, and Waihī Beach will close from midday December 24 and reopen on January 5, giving people time to finish end-ofyear tasks and borrow books for holiday reading.

From December 20 to January 10 inclusive, the statutory timeframe for building consents, code of compliance certificates and resource consents will be

paused. All applications submitted will not have the days counted over this shutdown period.

There will also be a delay in processing digital property file orders received on or after December 19. Council’s normal three-five working day turnaround will start again from January 12.

Rubbish, recycling collections

For households with Thursday or Friday pick-ups, kerbside rubbish and recycling collections will run a day later than usual during the weeks of Christmas and New Year. In high-visitor areas – Waihī Beach, Bowentown, Athenree and Pukehina – extra collections would also be running.

Summer hours apply for Katikati, Athenree and Te Puke Recyccling Centres and the Ōmokoroa Greenwaaste Centre.

Off-leash walking is allowed in the area of Bowentown beach – roughly the beach area between Albacore Ave and Plom Rd – as long as the owner carries a leash and keeps their dog under control. Dogs must be on a leash at Island View Reserve until March, due to birds nesting within the reserve.

Celebrate smart: alcohol-free zones this holiday season Summer has arrived, and Tauranga is gearing up for another busy holiday period. With thousands expected to flock to the city and Mount Maunganui for New Year’s celebrations, authorities are reminding everyone to plan ahead and celebrate responsibly.

ermanent and temporary alcoholfree zones are in place across Tauranga to help create a safe, family-friendly environment. These areas are designed to reduce alcoholrelated harm and ensure that everyone can enjoy the festivities without unnecessary risk.

Police will have an increased presence throughout the holiday season, including checkpoints and patrols leading up to, and during, New

Year’s Eve. Anyone found drinking alcohol in these designated zones – including inside vehicles – faces confiscation of the alcohol and on-thespot fines. It’s a simple message: know the rules before you head out, keep safe, and look out for your mates.

To support safety measures, fencing will be installed at Hopukiore (Mount Drury) Reserve on the afternoon of Wednesday, 31 December, covering the playground as well as the new steps and boardwalk. Both will reopen on New Year’s Day. Maps showing permanent and temporary alcohol-free areas are available on the Tauranga City Council website. Check them before you go, share the information with friends and whānau, and help keep Tauranga’s summer celebrations fun, safe, and welcoming for everyone.

Christmas greetings to all It’s hard to believe 2025 is almost behind us. This time of year is always a good chance to reflect on what’s been and look ahead to what’s coming.

It’s also a great time to send season’s greetings to you all, on behalf of councillors and myself. Christmas and the New Year holiday period are traditional opportunities for Kiwis to relax, recharge and enjoy spending time in this incredible place we call home. We’re lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world, far removed from the conflicts and challenges so many others face.

But we also know life isn’t easy for everyone. Many people in our community are facing hard times, and I want to acknowledge the amazing organisations working tirelessly to support those in need. I’ve recently spent time with Tauranga Community Foodbank and Good Neighbour and the work they’re doing in this area is inspirational. There are many others who are also helping to make our city a more caring and inclusive community. If you are able to help these agencies’ efforts in any way, please do so – every contribution will

help make our city a better place to live.

Big year ahead

Looking ahead to 2026, my hope is that the current signs of economic recovery will become a reality, with the benefits flowing through to everyone. From the council’s perspective, we’ve got a big year ahead. We’ll be focused on consolidating the progress made in 2025 and ensuring we deliver value for money. One of our first tasks will be settling on a 2026/2027 Annual Plan that allows us to keep investing in essential infrastructure, while addressing rates affordability.

As always, that will be a bit of a conundrum, but you can be assured we’ll be working hard to address our city’s priorities and meet our ratepayers’ needs.

Finally, we wish you a relaxing and happy festive season. If you’re travelling, take care on the roads, and if you’re cooling off in our coastal or inland waters, stay safe and look out for each other.

Tauranga Coastguard launches Summer Lottery Tauranga’s Volunteer Coastguard Unit has kicked off its major Summer Lottery fundraiser, offering locals a chance to win big while supporting vital marine rescue services.

Tickets are available online via a QR code or in person at the Tauranga Volunteer Coastguard Unit. Each $15 ticket contributes $10.50 directly to the local Coastguard. Buyers who purchase five tickets also receive one free.

In addition to ticket sales, Coastguard volunteers will take their Sealegs vessel to key locations around Tauranga over the summer, including Papamoa and Mount Maunganui camping grounds.

“This is so much fun and creates a lot of interest in the community as we drive the Sealegs through the camp selling our raffle tickets,” Operations Support Tania Williamson said. “Every ticket purchased not only supports Coastguard Tauranga but also strengthens the ties that keep our community safe and connected.”

The Sealegs and Coastguard truck will be at Papamoa Holiday Park, Saturday,

December 27, 5.30pm-8.30pm; Downtown Mount Maunganui, Saturday, January 3, 9.30am-noon; Mount Maunganui Holiday Park, Wednesday, January 8, 5.30pm-8.30pm; and Tauriko Crossing, Saturday, January 10, 9.30am-noon.

“Our Sealegs boat allows us to reach people stranded on sandbanks or in shallow waters where our main boat can’t go,” Tauranga Volunteer Coastguard Unit Manager Richard van der Jagt said.

“It can even navigate under very low bridges.”

Having served the unit since 2016, Sealegs is approaching the end of its service life. Van der Jagt said a replacement – which will cost about $400,000 once fully equipped with a new engine and other essential gear – is urgently needed.

While the Coastguard Summer Lottery is a national promotion, 70% of ticket sales from Tauranga go directly to the local unit.

Meet Raine, who comes from a litter of puppies that could no longer be looked after by their owner.

Raine and her siblings Dillon, Doug and River have been lovingly cared for by the SPCA team, and are eagerly awaiting their next adventure.

Raine is a good girl, who has developed some patience growing up with three brothers. Like alll strong females she will take the lead where males sometimes fear to tread.

Having said that, she is young and has some confidence building to do when she goes out intto the wider world. Training and patience will be needed to see her blossom but we think she will make a family very, very happy.

It’s getting hot out there – and if you like hitting the beach, river or lake to cool down it would be wise to first check the ‘Can I Swim Here?’ website run by Land Air Water Aotearoa (LAWA).

The website allows Kiwis to explore water quality information for more than 1000 beaches, rivers, and lakes across the country.

According to the website, water

quality is regularly tested during warmer summer months – from November to March – in most regions.

Cycling numbers soar on scenic trails Cyclists have logged more than half a million trips in the last 12 months on Tauranga’s most popular off-road trails according to Tourism Bay of Plenty.

Daily counts show that trails at Kulim Park, Waikareao Estuary, Matua Saltmarsh, and Gordon Carmichael Reserve have maintained steady usage during the last three years.

The city’s busiest trail is the 3.6km Marine Parade Coastal Pathway at Mount Maunganui, which opened in 2024 and winds through the dunes beside New Zealand’s most popular beach.

More than 213,000 cyclists passed the automated counter near Banks Ave since the start of last summer.

Those seeking a quieter ride have opted for the unsealed eastern trail at the

Kōpūrererua Valley urban wetland, which recorded more than 21,000 cyclists in the same period.

Tourism Bay of Plenty has just released its latest 24-page cycle trails booklet, featuring 13 scenic trails and three mountain biking areas across Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty.

Tourism Bay of Plenty general manager Oscar Nathan said cycling is an ideal year-round activity, and the trails are a great way for locals and visitors to explore the region’s heritage and natural environment.

“With trails from Waihī Beach to Paengaroa and everything in between, there’s a trail to suit every age and ability.

“This includes the relatively new 3km Pāpāmoa Coastal Reserve pathway, which enables cyclists to travel to and from Te Ara o Wairākei (the Pāpāmoa waterways)

Tauranga City Council team leader of engineering services Karen Hay said offroad trails provide safe spaces for families to enjoy quality time outdoors, while others use them for commuting, school runs, or trips to local parks.

“People can have a social catch-up and exercise at the same time. Our city council has automated counters on most cycle trails, which are monitored to inform current projects and future upgrades and to support funding applications by external parties.”

Reading challenge A summer reading challenge has been issued to Kiwi kids across Aotearoa in a bid to tackle to help tackle a holiday learning dip.

Duffy ff Books in Homes, with the Ministry of Education (MoE), this month launched The Summer Reading l Pānui Challenge: Read with Me. The challenge encouraged students who would be in Years 0-8 next year to read with their whānau (family) during the summer holidays. Students who complete and return the reading and pānui tracker form at the end of the holidays would receive a badge and certificate.

Duffy ff Books in Homes general manager Linda Vagana said the challenge was a great opportunity for students to continue their literacy skills in the upcoming holidays.“It encourages whānau to read together. Children who discover an enjoyment of reading and books now, become adults who inspire a love of reading to their whānau and wider community.

“Research shows that children who read for nine minutes a day will be exposed to more than one million words a year – heck yeah. So let’s get reading whānau!”

Daily reading is encouraged but consistency is key – students will be eligible for a badge and certificate even if they haven’t read every day.

Schools, kura, parents and whānau are encouraged to join the challenge and track the days they’ve read together.

Sladden said if Kiwis spot an unauthorised transaction, have trouble making a payment, or were struggling with loan repayments, they should contact their bank straightaway. Most banks have support during the festive period, so don’t wait until the New Year to get help.

Scouts collecting trees to get to jamboree Matua Scouts are planning a Christmas tree collection in January as part of a major fundraising drive to get their young members to the 24th Aotearoa New Zealand Scout Jamboree in 2026.

Matua Scout Group chair Stacey Koppens said 21 local scouts are preparing for what she describes as “the adventure of a lifetime” at the jamboree at Mystery Creek from December 2026 to January 2027.

“As one of the largest scout groups in Tauranga, we’re incredibly proud of our

youth who are determined to represent our community at this national event,” Koppens said.

She said the jamboree is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, bringing together Scouts from across New Zealand and the world for 11 days of camping, adventure, learning and leadership.

“It’s a youth-led experience where Scouts discover more about themselves, develop life skills and build lifelong friendships, all while being supported by our dedicated volunteer leaders,” she said.

At jamboree Scouts would learn essential skills such as first aid, civil defence and emergency response, water safety and river crossings plus adventure activities including rock climbing, abseiling and sailing.

“Each contingent has sixers, and each sixer takes responsibility for cooking meals, maintaining the campsite and managing washing days,” Koppens said.

With the jamboree held once every three years, many scouts would attend one during their time in the movement.

Every week we collect samples from more than 90 popular coastal, river and lake sites in the Bay of Plenty. We test for harmful bacteria such as E. coli and enterococci, as well as toxic algae (cyanobacteria), to help keep you and your whānau safe.

Our monitoring results are shared with Bay of Plenty and Lakes Public Health Service, who issue health warnings if any sites reach unsafe levels.

3. Bin it: If possible, take the seaweed ashore and dispose of it securely away from the beach.

New mobile parking camera for WBOP A roving parking camera was deployed in Te Puke and Katikati this month, with ticketing beginning December 15.

The use of License Plate Recognition (LPR) camera technology was approved as part of Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s 2025-2026 Annual Plan, said the council in a statement.

The decision follows a successful trial last year that tested the system’s effectiveness – although no tickets were issued during the trial.

WBOPDC compliance and monitoring manager Dougal Elvin said the introduction of the camera aimed to support local businesses and deter unsafe parking.

“Increasing the turnover of carparks in our town centres makes it easier for people to find a spot, so they can support local shops and

businesses.We want to make sure our town centres are accessible and convenient...”

The high-resolution, car-mounted camera would capture license plates and GPS locations of parked cars, to identify those that have parked for longer than the designated time, or that were parked illegally.

It would be operated by a full-time parking and bylaws officer, who would also monitor vehicle registrations, Warrant of Fitnesses and accessible parking spaces.

“Parking officers often face verbal abuse and threatening behaviour while doing their job.

The LPR system will help keep our officer safe, by enabling them to do the majority of their work from a vehicle,” Elvin said.

The mobile camera would be mostly used in Te Puke and Katikati but would also have a presence in Waihī Beach during summer, to encourage people to park responsibly during the peak holiday season.

A custom seat for residents An Ōtūmoetai College student has combined advanced design thinking, sustainability and a strong sense of community to create a custom-built outdoor seat for residents at Radius Matua.

Photo / David Hall Year 13 student Zainab Harmine designed and built the chair as part of her wood product design technology course, after Radius Matua manager Klara Luxford Rulisek approached the school seeking help with seating for residents. “Some of our garden furniture needed a bit of an uplift, and as we like to connect with schools, I put a proposal to Ōtūmoetai College for a student to take on a project,” Luxford Rulisek said.

Technology teacher Kevin Meyer said projects of this scale – and level of motivation – are rare. “It’s unusual to find students who are prepared to give up their time all year to make something for people they don’t even know,” Meyer said. “I just really wanted to use my skills for a community project to help people,” Harmine said.

The chair was built using recycled ironbark timber from old telephone poles, a sustainable choice that came with unexpected challenges, including a significant delay in delivery.

“When we got it, it was soaking. We cut it up, dried it out and then started building,” Harmine said.

The delay meant the project missed the deadline to be submitted for a national scholarship, despite extensive preparation and testing. Unlike standard school furniture projects, Harmine’s seat is entirely original, designed specifically for older users with limited mobility. Using specialist testing frames

at school, she fine-tuned the seat height, back support and angles. “This isn’t something you’d buy from a shop,” Meyer said. “It was engineered so older people can sit comfortably and, just as importantly, get up again.”

Harmine involved Radius Matua residents in the creative process. “She came and looked at where it would be placed, and we talked about the needs of the residents,” Luxford Rulisek said.

Harmine created a floral lattice pattern for the backrest, inspired by plants at the village.

“I wanted to make it meaningful for them, and they had the idea of including flowers from around them,” she said. The design was digitally drawn and cut using a CNC router.

“She wasn’t just making something for assessment,” Meyer said. “She was working with a real client, getting feedback all the way through and responding to it – that’s real technology education.”

Delivering the seat to the village was a highlight for Harmine. “I really enjoyed seeing the residents. They brought us baking, and were really happy to see it.”

Harmine plans to study construction management at AUT next year. “But this project shows exactly what’s possible when students are trusted to solve real problems,” Rosalie Liddle Crawford Meyer said.

Tauranga hairdressing apprentice a cut above the rest Tauranga hairdresser Amber Daisley has been recognised as the HITO Northern Apprentice of the Year for Hairdressing, a prestigious award that places her among the top emerging stylists in the country.

Daisley, who works at Envy Salon on Devonport Rd, received the award at the HITO graduation and awards ceremony, where apprentices and trainers from across New Zealand are recognised for excellence in their trade.

“It’s been such a surreal experience,” Daisley said. “I absolutely love what I do, so to be recognised like this is pretty amazing.”

The HITO Apprentice of the Year awards are highly competitive, with entrants from salons across the upper North Island, including Auckland and Northland. Daisley said she was the only finalist from Tauranga in the northern category.

Last year she was named a finalist, before taking out the title this year after submitting a detailed video entry showcasing her work, professional development and involvement beyond the salon.

“It was a big entry,” she said.

“You had to answer questions about your journey, your work, and what else you do outside the job, and include videos and clips from throughout the year.”

Adding to the milestone, Daisley officially qualified as a hairdresser the same day she spoke about her award, completing her apprenticeship

in just three years.

“I finished my final assessment today, so I’m officially qualified,” she said. “It’s pretty awesome to wrap up the year like this.”

My family

Originally heading to university on a scholarship, Daisley said she quickly realised it wasn’t the right fit.

“Hairdressing is in my family,” she said. “Once I did some work experience, I knew it was what I wanted to do.”

She credits the team at Envy Salon for their ongoing support throughout her apprenticeship.

“They’ve always been there for training, guidance and encouragement. I love where I’m working and definitely happy where I am,” she said.

It has, from many perspectives, been a pretty rotten year.

“Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,” wrote WB Yeats 100 years ago. It feels alarmingly pertinent.

But in a darkness over which we have no control the light of music and creation still shines. Tauranga musicians and bands of every genre have continued unabated to create challenging, insightful, and often just plain enjoyable music.

It’s been a busy recording year.

While new releases stretch from classic jazz to modern funk, from hardcore to hard rock, glam rock and blues, I’m going to leave them till the New Year. There are favourites on this week’s playlist. Instead, this week it’s MVPs. Most Valuable Players on the music scene.

So Golden Turtle Awards. Named for the concept that the world is sitting in space on a giant turtle. “But what’s that sitting on?” you may ask. Easy: it’s turtles all the way down.

Waltz, foxtrot, cha-cha the night away in Katikati

A dance band bought together

by Brett Lowe – a gentleman fast becoming known as ‘Katikati’s 1920s man’, who revels in everything from early era – is hosting two upcoming festive events.

The Katikati All Stars Dance Band will host a night of Christmas musical hits from the 1910s through to the 1950s – an era when social dancing was a major form of entertainment across New Zealand and worldwide – on December 21 from 8.30pm-10.30pm at Karangahake Hall. Entry is gold coin donation and musicians gain free admission.

On December 31, the band would host a New Year’s Eve ball at Katikati War Memorial Hall from 8pm to midnight.

Tickets cost adults $10, a couple $15, or a family $20 from the Arts Junction, or on the door.

Settlers’ dance

Lowe brought the 12-piece band together earlier this year to perform at a family-friendly free-for-all Settlers’ Dance in Katikati on September 13, which was part of the events programme to mark the town’s arrival of Irish settlers 150 years ago.

September’s dance was so well-attended – with more than 150 people dancing the night away through the decades from 1875 to the 1950s while dressed in eras from the present right back to Victorian times – it got the organisers thinking about hosting future similar offerings.

“We’ve got saxophones, violins, trumpets – all sorts of instruments [which will be played] by the 12-piece

band,” said Lowe, a multi-instrumentalist himself, before the September event.

“A lot of band members will play more than one instrument and they’ll be swapping them around. Most of the band is made up of locals, from as far away as Tauranga and Waihi, but we’ve got a few coming from Auckland too.”

Early bird tickets on sale for Jazz Festival Jazz fans are being encouraged to think beyond socks and chocolates this Christmas, with early bird tickets now on sale for the Port of Tauranga 63rd National Jazz Festival.

Festival organiser Marc Anderson said he is excited about the calibre and diversity of musicians featured in the programme, which runs from March 27-April 6.

“We’ve got an incredibly strong line-up this year,” Anderson said. “Many of our performers rub shoulders with the best internationally and it’s great to see them here.”

Highlights include the return to NZ of Benjamin J Shepherd, who has spent years on the Los Angeles music scene playing with legends such as Lee Ritenour, Dave Weckl and Peter Erskine. He will perform on the Jazz Village’s main stage with vocalist Terra Deva.

The Tauranga Big Band will present Everyythingg in its Rigght Place,, featuringg pop and rock interpretations arranged

by Pāpāmoa-based saxophonist Mark Dennison, who has played with John

Farnham and Elaine Page.

Other highlights include the opening show TNT - a mix of Reo Māori with big band jazz, the Katikati Street Party, live music at the Katikati swimming pool, and an expanded Jazz Village at Tauranga Historic Village with additional indoor concerts.

Uptown Downtown performances in Tauranga and Mount Maunganui will see bands hosted in bars and restaurants, creating an intimate New Orleans-style atmosphere.

Baycourt shows include Kokomo celebrating 35 years, Waypeople’s fusion of lyrical jazz and ancient Chinese wisdom, Nick Granville’s Funk and Drum Extravaganza, and the Adrian Cox Trio.

Youth development remains central to the festival, with the Wright Family Foundation 48th National Youth Jazz Festival running from March 30-April 1.

“It’s always good to see hundreds of students here for the competition,” Anderson said.

“It’s a time for them to grow in confidence and skill, and prepare, like many have before them, for a life of fulfilment through music.”

Early era costumes

Lowe said the same 12-piece band would perform in early era costumes at both events this month. “Expect everything from the lively energy of the jazz age, to the art deco elegance of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, through to the full swing of the big band era. “Not only are we playing the songs – we’re playing them in the styles in which they were originally heard,” Lowe said. “As a 12-piece band, we can capture a wide range of sounds, from the Charleston to tango and the big bands of the 1940s.”

A half-hour of light-hearted dance practice would be offered on December 31 in Katikati War Memorial Hall at 7.30pm for anyone who wants to refresh their memory, brushing up on basic waltz and foxtrot steps.

“Everyone is welcome! Let’s ring in the New Year with a foxtrot and support these talented local musicians,” said Lowe.

And you shall call His name Jesus…

There are many funny stories about baby name choices.

Two lawy wyers y chose the name Miranda after the Miranda rights arrest protocol in the US: You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you… A huge Disney fan wanted a Disney princess’ baby name, but her husband refused. So she suggested Aurora. He agreed, not knowing it was Sleeping Beauty’s name.

The naming of baby Jesus, however, was not a funny story, but a deeply meaningful one.

Joseph and Mary had little choice as to which name because an angel told Joseph to call him Jesus (Yeshua in Hebrew).

Yeshua means Saviour. He was called Yeshua because, as Matthew 1:21 said: “He will save His people from their sins. God wanted the world to know we can all escape the logical punishment for our sins by looking to our Saviour”.

Two verses later it’s also said, the virgin shall conceive and they shall call His name Immanuel, which means God with us. Jesus’ given name wasn’t Immanuel, but Christians do call Him God with us.

Scripture gives Jesus other significant names, including in the eighth century B.C. quote predicting His life: “For unto us a Child is born…An nd His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mightyy God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6)”.

If by faith you ask Him to be all these things to you, the door to everlasting peace and relationship with the Everlasting Father will be opened p for yyou.

Needing a leg up Excuse me while I gag, choke, wretch over my Christmas dinner.

Not over the dinner itself. But the cost of it.

Because it’s hard to enjoy a joyous festive feast when you need to mortgage the house to pay for it. A common old, everyday, garden variety, ropey leg of lamb, a Kiwi Christmas rite, was to cost me the thick end of $70.

The pain is deep.

Seasonal fluctuations I am told, global supply and demand. About 90 percent of red meat produced here goes overseas so we pay export prices, which are what the world’s prepared to pay. I didn’t hear any complaints from the land about that.

Also changes to land use, less livestock, so fewer loin chops. But the world still craves and will pay a premium, so we do. Why is some of that meat simply not held back for the local market at a reasonable, affordable, accessible cost? We would support our farmers if we could afford to do so.

So lamb’s off at Christmas, now pass me the ham. No, ham’s off too! A 7kg champagne leg of ham would cost $259.50. Half a leg would cost more than the lamb, $71.52, and a third of a ham at $53.00 would barely make enough buns for the brood at the beach on Boxing Day. We can take comfort - or can we take comfort? - from the fact they’re now paying more, not more than us though, for a leg of our lamb in Sainsburys. They can cart our stuff halfway round the world and its doesn’t cost any more. That doesn’t compute. So, actually, I can’t take comfort.

Four or five stuffed chooks is about $100, so looks like we’re stuck with a luncheon sausage sandwich this Christmas. Splash it with “train smash” – at least make it look festive.

How dare ex-National leader Simon Bridges talk about shortening Kiwi’s Christmas holidays.

Bridges, head of the Auckland Business Chamber, told the press that there was “objective merit” in the idea that New Zealand’s summer holiday break is both too long and in the wrong place.

“There is a view that New Zealand just shuts down not just for Christmas and New Year but in many cases all the way through to March,” he said.

What a load off codswallop! Most Kiwis get two weeks’ leave if that – especially those in the retail, hospitality

A roundabout question Re: ‘Round and round the roundabout’ (Letters page, The Weekend Sun, November 21).

I Goldsmith from Bureta wrote about the number of roundabouts from Ōmokoroa to Katikati. I believe these were installed to reduce speed on State highway 2. On Ōmokoroa Rd from the roundabout being installed at SH2 for 3.6km there will be shortly nine roundabouts. I wonder if any other ‘minor’ road has as many?

Moreover, it seems a bit rich coming from Bridges – an ex political party leader – that Kiwis should be taking less leave at this time of year when Parliament closes for the summer for about six weeks! Bridges enjoyed this bargain for the best part of 14 years – his parliamentary career!

And Luxon told the press back in 2023 that he planned to shorten the Parliamentary close down period over summer.

He told Morning Report when the new government was formed, Parliament would run for longer before Christmas and he expected it would need to start earlier in the new year.

Has this ever happened?

Both of these men are comfortable and can take leave from their chosen careers at any time they choose. Most Kiwis take what precious time they are offered to hold down their jobs to pay for the ever-increasing costs of living in New Zealand. How very out of touch Bridges is.

How lucky we are here in Tauranga

Recently, I had the misfortune of falling down the hillside at our property. The terrain very overgrown with ivy, jasmine, weeds and the likes. I had a fight with my bad knee, and I got tangled up.

My husband went for help to our wonderful neighbours, Rob and Julie Taylor. Rob took over straight away and rang for ambulance.

I said jokingly: ‘You may as well get the fire brigade too’. He said: ‘Yes they are on their way, two engines are on their way’.
