Stay safe and merry! Elfie the Circus Elf has arrived for the summer holidays – wheeling along the beach on his unicycle, arms full of Christmas presents – with an important message: stay safe around water this festive season. With Tauranga’s stunning beaches, rivers
and backyard pools drawing crowds, it’s easy to forget how quickly things can go wrong. Drownings happen in seconds, often within metres of safety. If you have a pool, make sure fences meet legal standards and gates self-close. Always keep children within
arm’s reach, and during holiday gatherings appoint a water watcher so someone is always supervising. Wear lifejackets near rivers, lakes and boats, and save the drinks for dry land – alcohol and swimming don’t mix. At the beach, swim between the flags at patrols
like Mount Main Beach, Tay St, Ōmanu and Pāpāmoa, and know how to spot a rip. Elfie’s holiday wish? That everyone stays alert, prepared and respectful of the water this Christmas and through summer. For the full story, go to page 6. Photo / David Hall
