Tauranga archer and coach John Ellis knows when a newbie trying out archery will sign up to his club “Some think: ‘Oh yeah, I know how to do it’ then there’s others, like me, who go: ‘I love doing this!’ Those are the people who stick,” said Ellis.

For ACG Tauranga Year 7 student and club member Mariam Harrison, 12, pictured, the sport has well and truly stuck.

“It’s usually 2-3% of people,” said Ellis.

“I can see it in their face. I just became fascinated with it [when he tried the sport

eight years ago], and since I discovered it in my adult years it’s good to be coaching youth.”

Tomorrow, Saturday, September 27, Tauranga Archers is hosting a regional competition to celebrate the club’s 75th birthday this month The competition is from 10am at the club’s Graham Park base. To find out more about the club’s history and offerings, and the skills and passion behind the sport, read
