L Loving art in Pyes Pā

The inaugural Pyes Pā Art Lovers Exhibition is being held next weekend at the Pyes Pā Hall.

Dedicated to supporting the local artist community and the young artists of the Western Bay of Plenty, the event will take place on Saturday, June 14, from 10am to 4pm at the hall, located at 724 Pyes Pā Rd.

“All art will be available for both viewing and purchase,” Pyes Pā Hall Inc. committee chair Cathi Barker said.

Barker is one of a group of Pyes Pā artists who meet regularly, painting from their home studios

“As an avid gardener, our property offers endless inspiration throughout the year, nurturing my artistic soul,” said Barker, who devotes part of every day to crafting floral paintings.

Alongside the local artists will be entrants in the

young artist competition with the theme ‘Autumn’.

Entry is by a gold coin donation, which will contribute to the People’s Choice awards These awards include first and second prizes for young artists in Years 0-3, Years 4-6, and Years 7-10, as well as the People’s Choice Pyes Pā Art Lovers Exhibition 2025 Artist of the Year

Barker said this is a fantastic opportunity to explore and purchase unique artworks while supporting the region’s creative community

There will also be a coffee van on site to keep everyone energised

“We encourage you to come, support the artists, cast your vote for your favourite artist, and perhaps acquire a unique piece of local art. We look forward to seeing you there,” Barker said.

Mauao base track closure next week

The partial closure of the Mauao base track has been postponed due to unfavourable weather conditions.

The partial closure of Te Ara Tūtanga (Mauao base track) originally scheduled for Wednesday, June 4, has been postponed to Tuesday, June 10, 6.30am to 4pm.

This closure is to ensure public safety during the removal of two dying exotic pine trees and one exotic hawthorn tree

During the partial closure, people can still use half of the base track by entering from the Pilot Bay side

Between 6 30am and 9 30am, people must turn around at the closure

After 9.30am, part of the base track will reopen, allowing people to continue up Te Ara ō Tūtauaroa to join the Oruahine or Motukauri tracks

Signage and barriers will be in place at all closure points.

The public are asked to respect the signs and barriers that are in place, which are there for people’s safety

The removal works are weatherdependent. If work is delayed because of adverse weather or other unforeseen circumstances, it may be carried out on Wednesday, June 11.

For more information and track locations, visit www.tauranga.govt.nz/ mauao

Stitches of satisfaction!

The greatest satisfaction Heather Hamm gets from embroidery is seeing beginners complete their first piece.

“It’s so nice to see their progression. I guess that’s the teacher in me, ” laughed the 79-year-old Matua resident.

Hamm, who taught home economics at Ōtūmoetai Intermediate for 13 years, is one of the longest-serving members of Tauranga Embroiderers’ Guild She joined in 1989.

“Back then, I was actually quite intimidated by the name ‘guild’ – as if they were all experts, but everyone starts somewhere.

“A woman at my mahjong class encouraged me to join, and I’m so glad I did ” Hamm still enjoys mahjong and is now also an embroidery teacher.

“My mother and my grandmother were great knitters, but I never took to that. I loved sewing and became a sewing teacher.

“Education is a great focus of the Embroiderers’ Guild because ideas and fashions change. “There are so many different types of embroidery, but I tend to prefer more structured designs in bright colours on canvas. ”

From simple cushions and book covers to more complex purses, bags, jewellery rolls and three-dimensional decorations, Hamm is known for her originality and creativity

“I design my own patterns, ” Hamm said “Years ago, embroidery cushion kits were mostly imported from the UK, but now there are endless ideas online.

“I like making things that are useful, and I encourage my students to do the same. When I teach a class, I want them to have something they’ll treasure, not just a piece of fabric they don’t know what to do with ”

What Christians believe about God…

That question has occupied the minds of workers, theologians, thinkers, mums and dads, debaters and journalists for centuries

Some think God is a creation of the human mind Some think God is a creation of society Some wish they knew who God is Sadly, many arenot able to give a clear, solid, sound and defendable answer to that question

It’s been said that belief determines destiny

I agree What people believe, be it true or not, affects their behaviour and conduct

Christians believe a numberof things about who God is They believe He is, that He exists, and that they talk with Him and He with them regularly They believe Heisthe ultimate Creator of this world and all the stars and planets in all the billions of galaxies They also believe God created humanity, with a very specific purpose in mind

That purpose is simply that humanity can have a relationship with this God, the Creator They believe He actually came and entered into the affairs of human beings in the form of the God-Man, Jesus Christ Where else do we find the indisputable history of the God who created everything and all of us, actually entering into the everyday ups and downs of His people? To actually be with His people, to identify with them, and then,to love them and give His life for them?
