All tied up with the Toga Party The election is coming up later in the year and it’s become fashionable to decide which parties we’ll be prepared to work with.

Mr Key has said he’s pretty happy with The Maori Party, United Future and (the remnants of ) Act. He’s also taken a bit more liking to NZ First – although Winston is not having a bar of any of this pre-election buddy-up talk.

He’d rather wait to see who gets elected, then spring the surprise alliances on the public. Trouble with that is; you might inadvertently end up with the very noddies in power that you were hoping to avoid.

All sounds like a bit of a raffle to me. I reckon the country needs a bit more certainty about who we are electing, rather than some sort of musical chairs game in which any bozo could end up running the country.

Meanwhile the RR team has been considering our party options. We had a pretty good Mexican Party a few years ago, although we won’t be rushing into the tequila again any time soon.

There is no interest in holding hands with the Egotistical Fat German Rich Boy Party.

The Birthday Party was looking like a good option

for a while, but we’ve had too many of them so are choosing to ignore any future ones. The Garden Party was weeded out early on.

We’re declining to work with the Tupperware Party; their fate is sealed.

The Hen Party was shaping up as a likely coalition option, until we discovered they were all chooks, under them were eggs and their thinking was scrambled.

The Batchelor Party proved incapable of forming any meaningful long-term relationships.

The Coming Out Party’s policies were pretty queer. The Toga Party was keen, but we don’t want to get tied up with them.

A friend of a friend suggested these guys, but we haven’t heard from them directly: The Third Party.

Then without warning, along came The Surprise Party.

Simply isn’t cricket

There’s been a bit of teeth gnashing going on this week over the affordability of houses in Tauranga.

Bizarre, really, since they are nowhere near as expensive as Auckland.

Besides, if you’ve worked hard and saved hard and gone without a few luxuries, and bought early and sensibly, you’ll be in a house of your own.

That’s how it works. Not everyone can afford a house because some people have other spending priorities, or don’t work; and find that if they have chosen other things to spend money on, other than getting a house as soon as they can, now find they’re a bit pricey. Bad decision. That’s the way the market works.

Those who smoke, drink, travel, have flash cars, boats, whatever – before they’ve sorted a house, will no doubt find that

houses are yes, expensive. Those who scrimped and saved, and got in early, are now happily tucked up in their own homes.

Bit of a lesson here?

I’ve a few mates who elected to travel, drink up large at Oktoberfest, sink warm pints in London, ski Mammoth – you name it. That’s fine, if that’s your choice. But don’t come complaining to the rest of us who elected to invest early and wisely. We are now reaping rewards earned, in many cases, many years ago, while you were trying to impress the Swedish waitress and relieving your Euros up against a wall somewhere.

Catch it if you can

Besides, if you’d been to the cricket in Hamilton and bought the T shirt and caught a couple of balls single-handed, you’d have the deposit by now.

Having that settled, it’s time to watch the cricket. The best thing that has happened to the game is the Alternative Commentary Collective, a bunch of clowns including Leigh Hart, Jeremy Wells, Beige Brigade co-founder Paul Ford, comedian Ben Hurley and some other really funny dudes.

Great to watch TV muted and listen to these plonkers doing the commentary live on the radio. Unscripted, spontaneous, rude and clever.

And if that isn’t enough irreverence for the week, remember Paul Henry is back on TV from Monday, replacing the old Nightline on TV3. Bring it on.

Bog snorkelling

In other sports news, it’s come to our attention that the Welsh are keen on their Mountain Bike Bog Snorkelling.

Just like jet sprinting in a stadium, they’ve

made it their own signature event.

We have the same opportunity at Baypark this weekend, when a perfectly good rugby field is being demolished for a weekend of watersport carnage – jet sprint racing. And it should be amazing!

The concept of digging up the local rugby field to make a pond to race boats upon, has thrilled some in the community and horrified others.

Some of the rugby stalwarts think its sacrilege to put a digger through the revered in-field, for the sake of a one-off motorsport event.

Here we think it’s a great idea, especially since the rugby field isn’t exactly hallowed turf. The city needs a better venue for rugby, and many remained unconvinced of the suitability of Baypark.

The domain has always been the logical choice, except for its major Achilles’ heel – it doesn’t have the parking. Unless the proponents can magic up 10,000 carparks from somewhere, or scheme up a slick ‘park and ride’ system between satellite parking areas, I can’t see that pig flying either.

World first, unique venue

Shame, because then we could leave Baypark with the jet boat ponds and the whole place could revert to its original purpose – a motorsport venue. And the jet boating venue with a stadium would be a unique venue that finally, Tauranga could lay claim to as a point of difference.

So I guess in the meantime it’s Baypark or nothing and we know the digger bloke is a clever fellow; I’m sure Colin Amrein and the team can restore the pitch to bowling green flat again for the footie, after the jet boats have finished marauding.

Either that or we’ll have to forget about the rugby and get our mountain bikes out for a bit of bog snorkelling with the Mud Wrestling Party. brian@thesun.co.nz

Build fast-tracked Early start for shopping centre

Construction of a $2.5 million shopping centre in east Bethlehem is being fasttracked by one year due to a high demand for housing in The Ridge development.

Work is expected to begin on the 950m2 Ridge Plaza containing seven shops on the corner of Millers Rd and Jude Place in about two months – at least one year ahead of schedule – with completion by Christmas 2014.

“It is simply because of the sales that we have got in here, otherwise we were going to hold off,” says developer Bob Thorne.

Bob believes his vision for The Ridge’s development has jelled with a market happy to buy a single storey detached home without a lawn or yard.

By controlling site size, and

design and build, the Thorne Group can produce a modern two or three bedroom freehold home of good materials and section package for under half a million dollars.

Bob says he’s also changed the look and feel of The Ridge development by using narrow 6metre-wide carriageways and eliminating footpaths in the cul de sacs.

His bet that homebuyers are prepared to pay for not having lawns and gardens is paying off, but he adds he’s owned the land 15 years and it’s only since his children added their input when they returned from their OEs five years ago that it’s really taken off.

The Ridge is bringing in buyers from other Tauranga suburbs down-sizing from larger homes, and others coming from out of town, says Bob, who reckons

about one-quarter of Stage 4 buyers are former Aucklanders.

“They are selling up there for $800,000 or $1 million and they can spend half of that. This is why they are selling the way they are.

The Stage 4 show home is not finished and we already have a contract on it.”

On a 250m2 section, Bob says he can build single storey homes 10m wide and 25m long. Space is saved by having no internal passageways. The two-bedroom homes are open plan, have a separate bathroom and toilet, plus an en-suite with master bedroom.

Garages are carpeted, leaving buyers the option of choosing other uses for the space.

By controlling the building, the developer can tailor houses for sites and also assure customers about what is going next door.

Turbo-charging the field High-octane and water-based action goes into overdrive this weekend as jetsprint teams roar through ASB Baypark’s newly-formed stadium track in the ENZED V8 Jetsprint Championship.

Round two of the series features 49 competitors, including six Australians, taking to the highly anticipated man-made track – attracting strong interest by being first time the sport is held in an enclosed, seated sporting

stadium anywhere in the world.

The track sees competitors navigate the temporary circuit of twisting five-metre-wide channels, covering 450m in total, at a depth of between 40cm to 70cm.

But all eyes and ears are on the battle of the jetsprint engines, with traditional V8 favourites facing stiff competition in the form of an impressive quad-rotor turbo-charged engine.

New Zealand Jetsprint Association president Erik Hoeksema says Wanganui’s Peter and Gary Huijs, with their world-first quad-rotor turbo-charged boat, are set to impress both the crowd and their competitors.

Capable of producing 1100hp to the water-jet pump that propels the boat, the pair is already being touted as a big drawcard for Saturday’s action.

Bursting onto the jetsprint scene in 2011, the rotarycharged boat is yet to make a resounding impact on promoting the sport – something Erik feels can be achieved in Tauranga.

“The main thing for us is getting young people involved in the sport. I use the analogy of drag racing where you only get a minor crowd – but if you get rotary motors there, the numbers double or triple,” says Erik.

“They just dig it [rotary motors] so to speak. Young people; they love their rotaries, their Supras and Nis-

sans but they are fairly limited to what they can do with them apart from drag racing or drifting. So why not put the motor in a boat?”

As with any sport, competitors are constantly pushing the boundaries for any edge – and Erik says jetsprints are no different, with the new engines highlighting the sport can be achieved on cheaper budgets.

“One of the big problems with our sport is it’s been raced around the V8s for some time, but there is now an emergence of new motors and ideas.

“What guys are looking at is seeking other options and engines; and how we can control the sport to run boats that are more affordable.”

Sprinting ahead at Baypark Tristan Hynds (pictured in action in Wanganui), is excited about flying the Western Bay flag at ASB Baypark on Saturday.

From 14th to 11th, then eighth and heading towards fifth place – Te Puke’s Tristan Hynds was making great progress in his first jetsprint competition when it all came unstuck.

Speeding round a hairpin bend on the Whanganui River course at the opening round of the ENZED V8 Jetsprints series, a ‘slight’ misjudgement forced Tristan to finish early after his new boat Loose Units struck the bank and was damaged.

“We turned in a millisecond too early and just clipped the bank,” says Tristan, who reckons the crash punched a hole in the boat’s back left corner, breaking the

spoiler and affecting steering.

Tristan downplays the crash, saying it was relatively minor and the boat was repaired with help from friends within four days.

While it hasn’t been back in the water since the December 27 opening round of the national championship series, Tristan has been focussed on tuning the engine to squeeze more performance out of it when racing at ASB Baypark Speedway on Saturday.

“I was stoked to be doing so well and make it through to the fourth qualifying round – new boat, new to the course, we were happy to do so well up against a lot of teams with much more experience.”

The jetsprint newcomer is the only Western Bay competitor racing at Baypark on a temporary water

course, with a series of five-metrewide channels dug up to 70cm deep for the country’s first jetsprint stadium event.

Tristan, who is racing in the second tier Group A class of 600plus hp boats, is excited about competing in front of family and friends and says he’s overwhelmed at the support he’s getting from across the region.

“I’m just fizzing about it. It’s going to be awesome,” says Tristan.

He hopes the Baypark stadium event will become an annual occasion, saying it promises to be an “exciting spectacle” with top jetsprinters from Australia going head to head with New Zealand’s best, set to reach speeds of 125km/h. Details: www.jetsprintbop.com

Model war effort Tauranga resident Rob Hicks is busy carefully placing about 150 miniature soldiers and Maori warriors on his replica of the Battle of Gate Pa ahead of the battle’s special anniversary this year.

As many as 3000 people are expected to descend on Gate Pa Reserve to commemorate 150 years since the 1864 Battle of Gate Pa on April 29.

In honour of the commemoration, Rob is creating a 2.4m by 1.2m miniature replica of the battle.

“About three years ago, I thought this is the biggest thing that’s ever hit Tauranga; the Battle of Gate Pa,” says Rob. Based on maps and information sourced from Tauranga Library, and with approval from some war historians, Rob’s model depicts the pa site where the battle took place and features about 150 small

soldiers and Maori warriors.

“I’ve collected for the last three or four years. I’ve had these models especially made down in Greytown in the Wairarapa.

“They’re so detailed that you would think that you’re in the scene when you look at it.”

Rob says each model, worth about $20 each, is completely different.

“They made them especially with the right coloured uniforms…some are loading their guns, some are firing them, some are just crouching there waiting.

“There’s a lovely horse on there…and at the moment they’re creating General [Duncan] Cameron for me with his telescope.”

With the project about two-thirds complete, Rob expects to have it finished before the end of February. His model will be on display in Tauranga Airport’s foyer in March.

Toki’s rugby affair They say apples don’t fall far from the tree – and the Toki family’s love of touch rugby is no exception.

Steve Toki is a former world cup and super transTasman touch rugby champion and Bay of Plenty representative, wife Michelle is also a former Bay over-30 women’s representative and son Tipene, five, is eager to play too.

But this weekend, six-year-old daughter Makere boosts the family sport, playing for BOP’s under nine girls’ team at the Touch New Zealand Junior Northern Inter-Provincial Series on January 25-26.

been brought up around it,” says Steve.

“She actually wanted to do it herself; I haven’t pushed touch on her at all. She’s sort of picked it up on her own and is really enjoying it.”

Makere’s 12-strong team takes on North Island squads – North Harbour, Auckland, Counties Manukau, Thames Valley and Waikato – in NZ’s biggest children’s touch rugby contest this weekend.

Steve says sharing his love for touch with Makere is heart-warming and watching her on-field makes him “so proud”.

Hip hop fever Hip hop dancers learned from some of the best this week, enjoying classes with ‘New Zealand’s Got Talent’ finalists IDentity.

The NZ hip hop champions are in Tauranga this week and held classes for local dancers each afternoon from January 20-24.

The boys are in town along with four hip hop teams from Auckland, training each morning in preparation for further competitions.

Independent spirit Ida Hamilton’s cosy home in Tauranga South is a luxury for the 105-year-old, who still lives on her own. But when all six generations of Hamiltons – yes, six – come to visit the Matriarch of their family, things get a little crammed.

Amid cabinets covered in small trinkets, and walls awash with family photos old and new – and fading 100th birthday cards from the Queen and John Key – Ida sits in her chair and beams when asked what the secret to her health is.

Apparently, it’s the question everyone asks.

“There is no secret,” says Ida, who has led a healthy life of never smoking and drinking, and has kept active up until a few years ago as a keen croquet player.

But her unusually large, close and strong family – ranging from 105 to nine months old – is a key part of her happiness, a fact underlined last week when more than 20 members of her extended family from as far as the Bay of Islands packed into her townhouse.

“We do it at least once or twice a year. Everyone enjoys it, especially me.”

While upcoming WW1 100-year anniversary commemorations are well beyond living memory for nearly everyone, Ida still

carries the loss of both world wars, and the relief their end brought.

She saw two sets of brothers off to war – one was killed in World War 1. Another carried a Gallipoli bullet in his body for years after the war ended, and a third was wounded during WW2.

Fiercely independent, Ida still cooks for herself and goes to the supermarket with her son Max – now 84 – weekly, having long since given up driving after her car was stolen.

She celebrates her 106th birthday in May.

Painting a smaller picture

A Shakespeare classic A mainstay of any good thespian’s list of mustsees is Shakespeare’s epic and dark revenge tragedy ‘Hamlet’, and it’s playing live at 16th Avenue Theatre tonight and tomorrow.

Liaison Production’s latest show will have the audience glued to their seats and holding their breaths, as troubled prince Hamlet finds out the awful truth about his own family and exacts bitter revenge on those responsible, says director Liam Hagan.

Hamlet is portrayed by 17-year-old actor Harry Taberman.

“Harry is an incredible talent,” says Liam. “He hasn’t done a lot, but as soon as he steps on stage he’s in complete control – as though he was born to it.”

Taking a break from his large scale works painted around the city, Mount Maunganui artist Owen Dippie is hosting a free exhibition of his smaller pieces for fans to enjoy in their own homes.

Owen, or OD as he is commonly known, is inviting art-lovers to see his third solo exhibition at his Ashworth Lane gallery on January 25.

Striving to host at least one exhibition each year, Owen’s 2014 exhibition showcases New Zealand-inspired works.

“The theme is based on living in NZ. It’s kind of like a Kiwiana exhibition, but not like a buzzy bee and pineapple lumps kind of thing,” laughs Owen.

“It’s based on NZ imagery and how I feel about living in NZ as a New Zealander.”

The talented artist has been making a huge impact on his hometown recently, with giant street artworks of famous portraits, which adorn the walls of buildings on 15th Ave, Cameron Road and a number of other locations around the city and Mount Maunganui.

He’s also created murals at Greerton Village and Arataki schools.

But putting down the spray cans, Owen says this exhibition will feature different aspects of his art, which people may not commonly associate him with.

“People tend to class me as a spray paint artist, but the majority of this work is done in paintbrush and some sculptural work. So it’s different aspects of my art that I guess a lot of people aren’t used to.

“Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of large scale work – so it’s great to have a canvas or board or something a lot smaller to work on.”

Ranging from $2 to $10,000, Owen says there is something for everyone at his free exhibition.

“I think the best thing about the exhibitions is that at a rock concert, only certain people feel like they’re welcome – but with art, there’s no age limit.

“From eight-year-olds to 80-year-olds, everyone is welcome where there is a mutual understanding of art.”

Owen will be at the free exhibition on Saturday, January 25, from 8pm to 10pm at 2 Ashworth Lane. His artwork will be on display at the gallery for about a month.

Rugby’s flying 5s Mount Maunganui’s Main Beach crowds are set for a popular dose of summer sporting action, as teams ditch their rugby boots and mouth guards for the fast-paced sport of beach rugby.

Beach 5s, as the name suggests, is teams of five playing a modified form of rugby with five minutes each way in lung-busting efforts on the sand – described in global circles as “scrag on the beach”.

Recognised by the International Rugby Board, beach 5s leagues are common across Europe and are particularly popular in Italy, France and the UK during summer.

New Zealand Beach 5s organiser Melita Martorana says the day-long tournament sees teams constantly on the 30m by 25m field for non-stop games between 10am and 4pm.

“Mount Maunganui is the perfect location and there is no other place in New Zealand that can offer this; it’s a very sociable event,” says Melita.

“Pretty much what we want is for guys to get together and have a day of fun under the sun playing rugby.”

And with the sport drawing a popular audience in Europe, past and present rugby stars are making the switch to the sand-based sport when they can – including 2005 World Sevens Player of the Year and Auckland’s Orene Ai’i.

“Some of the former Bay of Plenty representatives are looking to form teams to play in the Mount tournament, which is great.”

Teams will play between four and six games during the day, due to shorter matches, and a simplified scoring system with one point per try.

Hockey with a twist is coming to the Mount this weekend in the form of the second-ever NZ Beach Hockey Championships.

The social tournament sees teams play inside an inflatable structure, set up at Mount Main Beach, with specially designed hockey sticks and a mini soccer ball.

The event launched for the first time in New Zealand last year, and follows a European concept which sees about 20,000 people show up.

“It’s massive over there, and obviously we’re not quite as big as that, but we’re just starting up,” says event coordinator Chris Goldsbury.

“After running it for the first time at the Mount last year, it went pretty well and hopefully we will get a lot of players this weekend.”

Chris says the competition is based largely on hockey rules, but most of them are thrown out the window.

“If you haven’t played hockey before you can easily play, the team that won last year had one hockey player and everyone else was picked up from other sports.”

Chris says it will make for great entertainment for spectators, with play scheduled for 12pm-5pm on both Saturday and Sunday, January 25-26.

One hour will be set aside around 2-3pm for children to have a go, and Black Sticks players will meet and greet people.

“We did that last year and it was pretty successful.”

The rising cost of living in our largest city is a concern for all of us. The Government is pushing through measures to try and address the problem of Auckland’s spiralling house prices, but affordability is without a doubt a major issue for many individuals and families. Many business owners and entrepreneurs are likewise struggling with high operating costs.

One of life’s most frustrating things is when someone imposes their great idea on you when you’re already busy doing something else.

Like when I cook dinner for my flatmates, but one of them brings home takeaways – assuming my meal is going to be a disaster.

In the scale of things, much as we would like to think differently, mankind is puny and powerless in comparison with the forces of nature. Again this week we have seen a pretty big earthquake in the lower North Island. And I have just opened an email from Bay of Plenty Civil Defence advising of a severe weather warning for the Bay.

After thousands of hours of work rebuilding and restoring aircraft at Classic Flyers aviation museum, the team of volunteers is looking forward to the influx of visitors this weekend.

Former helicopter pilot Bob Torr, who describes himself as ‘clerk of works’ for the museum’s 16-strong restoration team, says although most of the focus at Sunday’s airshow will be outside, they still expect a lot of visitors through the museum.

“It’s always great to see people enjoying the displays. That’s what it’s about,” says Bob, who, along with team leader Bruce Chapman, deflects attention from themselves – saying the museum’s restorations and rebuilds are a credit to all involved.

“It’s a true team effort. There’s a group of us guys – retired engineers, mechanics, electri-

cians, sheetmetal guys – we have a broad spectrum of specialised skills and love restoring the old planes,” says Bob. Like Bob, many of the team have been involved at Classic Flyers from before the aviation museum was set up nine years ago. Looking back, Bob says there have been many highlights, but he rates the painstaking three-year restoration of the 1943 Kittyhawk P40E among top achievements.

“It’s a lot of fun, especially with the P40, which we built from a pile of rubbish,” says Bob. “It really is looking very impressive, especially when you consider what it started like.”

Along with the Kittyhawk, other restorations and rebuilds on display at their first airshow on Sunday include a Venom, an Aermacchi MB-339 jet and a Catalina flying boat fuselage, which is being opened to the public with the completion of stairs to the hanging display.

Bruce says the team has enjoyed every project, but is now looking around for something else to get stuck into.

“If anybody has or knows about someone with an old aircraft, we’d love to hear from them.”

Sounds and smells of 100 years Two rebuilt allied WWI aircraft flying around Tauranga today and tomorrow are bringing the authentic sounds and smells of 100 years ago, to the Classics of the Sky – Tauranga City Airshow this weekend.

While the two allied WWI aircraft are replicas, their engines are original, says their owner, The Vintage Aviator Ltd’s production manager Gene De Marco.

The aircraft, a Sopwith Camel and a Nieuport 11Bebe, are powered by 100-year-old engines, says Gene.

“They both have these really unusual rotary engines, where the whole engine spins with the propeller.

“The camel has a really distinctive sound. It’s throttled with the ignition, so the pilot actually turns the ignition on and off to throttle the engine. It has a selector which allows the engine to run full speed, half speed, quarter

speed, and one-eighth speed.”

Gene says the sound, while “quite loud and noisy” is “really unique”.

“You really have to see it and smell it and hear it. Both airplanes use castor oil and a lubricant, and it’s a total loss oil system – just right overboard, you know.”

The allied aircraft have been transported by truck from Masterton and re-assembled this week, with testing and rehearsals happening today and tomorrow.

Two German aircraft, a replica Fokker Triplane and a D7, flew to Tauranga last week to be part of this weekend’s action-packed airshow.

The D7 was built in France in the 1960s and starred in the 1966 movie ‘The Blue Max’ with George Peppard, James Mason and Ursula Andress.

The German aircraft also use more modern engines, which allow them to be flown across country, says Gene.

“The D7 is powered by a De Havilland Gypsy Queen engine and the Triplane with an American-built Warner engine.”

Exhilaration and acceleration on the water Two family-friendly days of action on and off the water are happening February 1-2, with the 2013/2014 Acceleration on Water Festival of Speed Tour hitting the water at Lake Karapiro in Cambridge.

Two new Grand Prix Hydroplanes, purchased from Canada, and two new Formula One Tunnels will line up with five other Grand Prix Hydroplanes and 10 Formula One Tunnels.

The event also features water ski racing, modified hydroplanes, junior class racing, lawn mower racing, North Island titles for two classes, the Master Craft giant water slide and more.

The Acceleration on Water Festival of Speed Tour sees round three next month; and the final round is on March 15-16.

A line-up of six 2500hp Blown super-charge Grand Prix Hydroplanes, reaching race speeds of 273km/h, will shake the banks of Lake Karapiro on the 2km course, completing four laps in less than three minutes.

Skilled drivers are on edge and do make mistakes, as did Grand Prix Hydroplane driver Raymond Hart recently. Raymond blew his hydroplane at Lake Dunstan in Cromwell last December, landing the boat upside down.

Junior Class racing is growing in numbers every season and is a great way for youth to learn boating skills.

Better to be safe than sorry Have you ever considered the possibility that your inflatable lifejacket might not operate when you need it?

Just like your car, boat or spouse, your lifejacket requires a bit of care and maintenance to ensure reliable performance.

Don’t be worried about opening up the lifejacket; they are easy to re-pack.

• Unscrew the CO2 cylinder and check it for rust or corrosion; also check the nozzle hasn’t been punctured by the firing needle.

Once the cylinder has been used, it has to be replaced – you can’t refill them.

• Check the bladder by inflating orally, using the oral inflation tube and leave it inflated overnight. If the bladder leaks, return it to an approved service agent. Deflate by inverting the cap on the inflation tube and pressing it gently.

• For manual lifejackets, check the firing pin works, by pulling the inflate cord. You should see the pin move when you pull the cord.

• Most automatic jackets will have a dissolving bobbin – check it is in place and that it is no more than four years old. Some automatic types have an automatic inflation mechanism or cartridge that will have an expiry date printed on it.

• Very importantly – make sure the pull toggle is accessible.

Check your inflatable lifejacket every couple of months, regardless of whether or not it has been inflated. Inflatable lifejackets should also be taken to a qualified service centre for full servicing every two years.

Summer series showing off Tauranga talent In its one year of existence, the Mauao Summer Series has offered many local artists the chance to show off their talents – and its back again this weekend.

The series sees a free, no-alcohol concert take over Coronation Park in Mount Maunganui on the final Saturday of each month during summer.

“It’s all free and we’re encouraging people to bring a picnic and a blanket and just hang out in the park and enjoy it.”

Saturday’s line-up consists of vinyl DJ K Holla, world music duo Aaron AliceSea, Pete Fountain, and Sidewalk Empire.

Aaron says the series has prompted a number of people to take up tuition or interest in the arts, with many approaching the

Family picnic full of fun The Bay of Plenty Harness Racing Club is holding its 20th annual family picnic meeting on the grass at Tauranga Racecourse this Sunday, January 26.

There is a full 10-race card of capacity fields, starting at midday. The feature race, the Gartshore Group Tauranga Grass Cup, for a stake of $14,000, starts 4.15pm.

The ever-popular Kidz Kartz miniature ponies driven by six-15 year olds will also be racing, with all the competitiveness of the professionals.

Grass track harness racing has become so popular that trainers from all over the North Island have set their horses for these events. The fields reflect this with more than 130 horses starting. Study up the grass track form, because the dividends are often huge at this meeting.

This year has attracted horses from some of the strongest stables across the North Island.

All of the children’s entertainment is free, including

bouncy castles, the scavenger hunt, a lolly scramble – and a new edition this year: the Super Slides. The Kids Go Racing caravan will also be there with lots of prizes to be won.

The workshop was amazing in its ability to captivate adults’ attention with children’s displays; and had us thinking of different concepts in a way we’d never done before.

The workshop took us through the Ray of Light Atelier, being a place that uses light as a material for children’s exploration and learning.

The goal of the Atelier is to switch ‘light’ on in one’s mind.

Light can be a perceptual experience that transforms, raises questions, stimulates creativity and even evokes emotion.

The central Mount Maunganui site on the corner of Hull and Maunganui roads will be buzzing with activities, ranging from sports and challenges to crafts and baking during weekdays.

Centre manager Matthew Strange is excited to get the programme up and running again.

“It is such an awesome space for kids to hangout after school, with the large indoor court for the kids to burn energy rain, hail or shine, along with Blake Park’s fields and the beach close by.”

The Mount ASC programme is suitable for five to 12-year-olds, and includes pick-ups from Mount Maunganui schools.

It’s not just for sporty children, as the centre has a large kitchen and crafts space to add great variety to the activities, says Matthew.

“The great location means we will also drop kids off to their sports trainings at Blake Park, so busy parents can ensure their kids don’t miss out.”

Mount After School Care will be the fourth of Bay Leisure and Events popular OSCAR programmes offered across Tauranga City; and is offering a free week’s trial to all those registering in Term 1.

As children go back to school next week, working parents need not panic, with the launch of an after-school programme close to the central city offering care until 6pm.

The Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre is a city central site located on the corner of 11th Ave and Devonport Rd – a venue on the way home for many parents and close to schools, such as Tauranga Primary School, Gate Pa School and St Mary’s Catholic School.

Centre manager Kelly Ngawhare says the QEYC is “perfect for after-school programmes – with large indoor spaces for children to burn energy, and it’s right next to Memorial Park”.

The QEYC programme suits children aged five to 12 years old, with plenty of variety in the programming to suit all interests.

“From sport and games to baking and crafts, the kids get to have great experiences alongside their peers – they also get help with their homework from qualified staff and a healthy snack to tide them over until dinner time.”

The QEYC already runs a successful holiday programme as part of the Bay Leisure and Events Oscar network, with many children returning to enjoy quality activities at an affordable price, says Kelly.

Building Waikino a bridge of memories A $300,000 suspension bridge in memory of the devastation left by the 1981 flooding of Waikino is nearly complete.

About 33 years ago, the small town, nestled in the hills above State Highway 2 at the eastern end of Karangahake Gorge, was flooded, destroying shops

In 2007, the decision was made for a plaque to be placed on a replacement bridge across the Ohinemauri River, says Waikino Memorial Bridge project manager Diane Keirnan.

Working with bridge committee members and Hauraki District Council on the project, Diane says the project memorialises the old bridge, homes and businesses that were washed away, “as well as other important historical events in Waikino”.

Diane says the project is a few working days out from completion, before final load testing and compliance from HDC; then the 37.5metre bridge can open.

A blessing is planned for the initial opening of the bridge before it is opened to the public.

A memorial wall beside the bridge will depict artwork of the town’s history including the Victoria Battery, which processed ore from the Martha Mine in Waihi, but closed in the early 1950s.

The total cost of the bridge, including the art wall, is estimated to be $340,000 which includes an $88,000 contribution by HDC towards the car park.

Diane says about $215,000 has been raised by major funders and local donations.

The five major funders, which have contributed between $10,000 and $81,500, are Lottery Grants Board, The Lion Foundation, New Zealand Community Trust, Trust Waikato and the Waikino Tavern, plus generous donations from Valder Ohinemauri Trust and Say Trust for concept and working plans.

Bay construction booming With construction booming in the Bay, more skilled workers will be needed to move into trades supervisor roles.

For those already working in construction, and wanting to move into a supervisor role, the National Certificate in Construction Trades could be just the ticket.

Group leader Paul Roberts says the key to this whole programme is it is “very applied”. “The material that students learn in class is not just theory – it has a practical application on site.”

Now the co-owner of ABC Homes in Tauranga, Tane has kept up with his studies while working.

He signed up to do his apprenticeship through Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and completed his Certificate in Carpentry Level 4 in three-and-a-half years to become a qualified carpenter.

After working for himself for a few years, he went into partnership with a colleague to form ABC Homes, which specialises in domestic and small commercial buildings as well as renovations. The design and build company incorporates Kainga Whenau homes, which builds homes on Maori land.

In 2012 Tane finished the National Certificate in Construction Supervisor (Level 5) and is now looking at doing some quantity surveying papers out of the Level 6 Construction Management Diploma.

“I wanted to future-proof myself, because you can’t be on the tools forever.”

House prices reaching record highs Bay of Plenty’s median house prices are continuing to rise with figures showing prices reaching record highs for the third consecutive month.

Figures released by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand today show property prices in the Waikato/ Bay of Plenty region for December 2013 rose $25,750, or eight per cent, from $320,750 in 2012 to $346,500 in 2013.

The median price increased by $6500, or 1.9 per cent, in a month from $340,000 in November 2013.

In Tauranga house prices for December continued an upward trend reaching $403,000. It is an increase on the $389,500 price tag in November and up $54,000 on December 2012’s $349,000.

Mount Maunganui/Papamoa is also showing strong signs with a median price of $433,000, increasing from $415,000 in November 2013 and $405,000 in December 2012.

Compared to December 2012, sales volumes throughout the region are up nine per cent, with strong growth shown in Mount Maunganui/Papamoa and Tauranga. But stacking up next to November 2012 sales plummeted 17 per cent and on a seasonally adjusted basis sales for the region fell four per cent.

REINZ chief executive Helen O’Sullivan notes the big fall in volume compared to November, and a record median high may indicate buyers at the lower price points are still uncertain and recent activity is “disproportionately weighted to sales of higher priced properties”.

Nationwide, residential sales volumes continue to fall in December while overall prices continue to firm, with an all-time new median at $427,000 – a 0.5 per cent increase or $2000, above the previous record set in November 2013.

For the month of December 5688 houses were sold nationally, down 1.1 per cent on December 2012.

“It is yet too early to be specific about the underlying trends but there is growing evidence that the Reserve Bank’s LVR guidelines may be impacting sales volumes and distorting median prices in some regions.”

Helen says the softer trend in sales noted in November 2013 continued into December. But she adds December’s shorter selling month means a drop from November sales volumes is a

normal part of the seasonal pattern.

“However, the 10 year average fall is 13.6 per cent, while this year sales volumes have declined 18.3 per cent from November. While a small number of regions bucked the trend, other parts of the country recorded significantly greater falls in volume than the national figure.”

Karena Mattson is the new Tauranga Mainstreet coordinator – and just weeks into her role, she’s enjoying meeting with members and making plans to further add vibrancy and energy to Downtown Tauranga.

“It’s going really well, really busy. I spent the last few weeks before Christmas getting an overview of my role and where I fit in; and then I came back on January 9 and just hit the streets, slowly introducing myself to as many people as I can.

“Initially, that meet and greet with members is my focus, and with that comes relationship building which is vital for my position.”

On top of this, she’s been getting out each Monday morning and walking through the streets, making note of any property repairs and issues to report to Tauranga City Council.

“Having that control makes me aware and keeps everything looking fabulous.”

Karena grew up in Tauranga, and aside from completing an OE and a short stint in Auckland, she’s stayed in her hometown.

“I’m a Tauranga girl at heart; this is where I belong and I love it.”

Prior to this role, she spent five years working as the event manager at Triodent Ltd in Katikati.

Tuskany Mainstreet spokesperson Sally Cooke says they’re delighted to have secured Karena as mainstreet coordinator and feel she is the ideal fit for the role.

Family fuelled by speedway successes

“It was a bit of a rookie mistake,” says Chris, who last weekend followed in father Maurice’s footsteps to claim a national speedway championship title in Stratford.

While Maurice claimed titles in the midget and super saloon classes years earlier, Chris claimed victory in the saloons – with brother Steve only a few spots back in fifth place.

“We’re pretty competitive, there’s not much between Steve and me at all,” says Chris, talking of his brother placing second at last year’s nationals.

Recalling his early crash that put the car and the pair’s racing out for the season, Chris says it was frustrating but didn’t deter him from getting back behind the wheel.

“I was more annoyed with myself than anything,” says Chris, who recalls the car sliding into a barrier at speed. “It was a bit of a learning curve; but after watching dad over the years, it’s in the blood.”

The following two seasons, Chris and brother Steve shared a car they raced alternate weekends. Starting in a super saloon, they soon downgraded to a standard saloon and began racing their own cars.

Mid-season for 2013/2014, Chris is happy with his performance – regaining winning form at Baypark two weeks ago after initially struggling. Winning December’s six-stage South Island DHL Saloon Speedweek series, (where Steve placed second), Chris has also claimed a handful of other victories.

His goal for the next few months is to dominate the

NZ Saloon Grand Prix in Auckland, which he won last year, and claim Gisborne’s North Island champs.

Dark horse drifting ahead of the pack Talk to Aden Omnet about his success at the ASB Baypark round of the national drift series on Sunday and you can hear the smile in his voice.

In his first drift competition for a year, the Tauranga tyre shop owner stunned many of the motorsport’s followers with his top performance in his 2JZ Toyota Altezza which saw him reach sixth place in the round,

well ahead of other Western Bay drivers.

“I was hoping for the best, but really I just wanted to make the top 16, so I could go through to do battle.

“It felt amazing to do so well, especially with so many friends and supporters around. It was great.”

Having only a couple of days’ driving his car in the last year, Aden puts his success down to driving on instinct “rather than overthinking everything”, a wellprepared car, strong team and being in top health.

“I’ve been making an effort to really look after my health and eat well; and I’m

sure it paid off by helping me stay alert and focused.”

Two years ago, Aden shifted up from Oamaru to make it easier to compete in the D1NZ National Drifting Championship meetings once qualifying to compete in the top drift league. Last season, he raced in the first three meetings but dropped out after the Baypark meeting.

“Then funds dried up and I needed to keep my focus on the business,” he says, following rapid growth of Aden’s Tyres from the online tyre shop’s relocation to the Mount.

Aden’s unexpected success on Sunday has put him in a position many would envy, but now the businessman has to weigh up continuing to compete with business commitments.

“It was only meant to be a one-off, but because I did so well I’ve got people pushing me to compete in the next events. I’m really torn – I would love to

do the next rounds, but business has got to come first.”

With offers of help to cover some costs, Aden says he’ll probably compete in the next two events – in Taupo in February and Christchurch at Easter – but says whether he’ll compete in May’s grand final in Pukekohe will come down to “avoiding any accidents”.

Restoring village forest history Historic Village organiser of biodiversity and sustainability Noel Peterson has been busy nurturing hundreds of small trees during the last few months in an attempt to re-establish what he believes is a historic kahikatea forest.

About three years ago, Noel was gifted as many as 400 kahikatea trees by pupils at Tauranga Waldorf School, which he planted in the village forest on October 3, 2012.

“They were nearly dead and I put them in the ground; and I got them growing nicely by the environment centre.”

After placing them in compost mulch for about three years, Noel says the little plants “grew marvellously”.

Kahikatea trees, known as New Zealand’s tallest forest tree, can grow up to 55 metres tall and its trunk can reach one metre in diameter.

With about 10 existing trees and a few seedlings already in the village forest – Noel believes the area is a remnant of a significant kahikatea forest.

“I think that maybe it’s a remnant of something that was there in

Raising monarch butterflies in your garden

The potato has pushed out tomatoes to take the title of New Zealand’s number one favourite vegetable – but it was very close.

The latest Household Economic Survey figures from Statistics New Zealand show Kiwis bought more than $119 million worth of potatoes in the

year to June 2013, and $118.7 worth of tomatoes. Tomatoes have reigned supreme at the top of the favourite vegetables list for at least 10 years.

Scientifically, tomatoes are considered to be a fruit, but Statistics NZ, Horticulture New Zealand and most consumers consider them to be a vegetable.

It’s easy to raise monarch butterflies at home; and doing so is a fantastic nature lesson for children. All you need is a clean and sheltered position with plenty of the swan plant.

Place the plant outside in a sunny spot, so the female monarch can find it and lay her eggs on the underside of the leaves. You may need to remove excess eggs, as it is best to have only two-three caterpillars on each plant.

It takes five-14 days for the eggs to hatch. The caterpillar’s mission in life is to eat and grow until it reaches full size (about three weeks). It is best not to handle the caterpillars while they are very small.

Searching for support Victim Support Tauranga is in desperate need of new volunteers.

Service coordinator for Tauranga Moana Maree Nicholson says volunteer numbers are dangerously low and is searching for new recruits ahead of the April training sessions.

“Because we are a 24/7 service, I need to be able to cover the entire Western Bay of Plenty policing district. We have as 45-minute timeframe response, so I need people everywhere.”

While any help is welcome, Maree says she is particularly short of male and Maori volunteers, and does not have anyone in the Te Puna or Katikati areas.

Victim Support volunteers operate on a week on/ week off schedule, and can chose which hours they wish to be on call.

“If they work full time they might only want to do weekends, or perhaps be available from 6pm-12am.”

Work consists of everything from burglaries through to homicides, says Maree. “Homicide workers need to be specially trained. We also cover sexual violation, domestic violence, and motor vehicle crashes.”

New volunteers begin with phone call work, before being buddied with an existing volunteer for more serious jobs.

While the need for recruits is severe, Maree warns it’s a serious role not to be entered into lightly.

Volunteers must complete training in April, and attend 100 per cent of monthly trainings during their first year.

“I would rather take four quality people than 10, to fill gaps.”

When I speak to people with health problems, I stress the importance of getting through the next three months before we can really see how they are progressing. Hospital to celebrate centenary Herbert stayed in the hospital for 77 days and Reginald spent 34 days in the hospital.

Forty years later, in 1950, Tauranga Hospital was considered a cottage hospital and was located a distance from town.

Phil says the hospital has come a long way in 100 years.

McLeod Cranes’ biggest crane, weighing 110 tonnes and reaching more than 80 metres high, is showing off more than just its wheels at Mount Maunganui Rotary Club’s first-ever auto show.

About 350 cars are expected to park up at Mount Maunganui College grounds on February 23 for the inaugural Show off Your Wheels auto show.

Lifting 170 tonnes at a three metre radius, the five axle machine on display at next month’s auto show is McLeod Cranes’ biggest crane, says Scott McLeod, from McLeod Cranes.

“A Mini is a good indicator of about a tonne. So if you could stack 170 Minis on top of each other – that would give you an idea of what sort of weight it can lift.”

Scott says the rare left-hand driven crane has 64 metres of main boom and 18 metres of fly, making its

“It can pick up a tonne at about 70 metres. It’s one of our busiest cranes in Tauranga,” says Scott.

And as if weighing 60 tonne isn’t heavy enough, another 50 tonnes of counterweight is added to the crane on-site – so when it is fully set up it weighs 110 tonne, says Scott.

Sport Bay of Plenty recreation advisor Jen Riley says Bike Month is set to be bigger and better when it starts next weekend, with more activities to encourage people to take to biking.

Along with popular events from previous years, new activities include a scavenger hunt, basic mountain bike skills session and a ladies only bike maintenance class.

A major push is on introducing riders to the many ‘urban mountain bike trails’ which are laid off-road throughout Tauranga, which give riders a chance to cover much of the city away from traffic.

Jen hopes introducing occasional or former cyclists to the off-road tracks via weekly tours will encourage them to take their pedalling up a gear by themselves.

“I’m certain it’s encouraging people to continue cycling. I know a lot of people have kept using the urban

Work teams are also encouraged to sign up for the Tour de Bay, where teams of three are pitted against others in the challenge to clock up as many kilometres as possible – with prizes in competitive and recreational team categories.

The new and the old, the brave and the bold So far this year, life has been a little difficult as I have faced extra stressful transport problems as I find myself without a vehicle.

Just as well I have some good friends and neighbours, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to attend the farmers’ markets and share in the joy of microgreens.

I caught up with some old friends recently over a few buckets of beer down on the ever-changing Strand in one of the new bars; and we reminisced about the past.

Three of us were chefs and naturally talked a lot of hospitality, about past restaurants, food trends and influences.

It was humbling to note they’d seen me as somewhat of a pioneering chef who was years ahead of his time.

For those that can recall Forrest, with its natural cuisine; that was one example, and so what of the future?

We discussed our plans for the coming year, basically the plan for me is to make a living by selling microgreens; how brave is that?

The trouble is I can’t stop creating. It’s like a drug for my own wellbeing, so I will always be in the kitchen making something new when I feel the need.

As I have a bag of peaches, and the children at home, I thought I’d create a quick and tasty cobbler as the rain begins to fall. I decided to add an extra dimension to the cobbler by char-grilling the peaches first.

Tauranga-based company Heilala Vanilla is fast becoming a premium brand name in Japan.

The world class vanilla producer is this month completing its eighth shipment of award-winning vanilla products to the Japanese market.

Chargrilled peach cobbler Gluten-free Serves 4 Ingredients 120g melted butter ½ cup ground almonds ½ cup maize cornflour ¼ cup fine polenta 1 cup coconut sugar 2 tsp baking powder ¼ tsp salt 1 scant cup of milk (not quite a cup) 1 large egg 4-6 just ripe peaches (large chunks grilled for one minute on barbecue) 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp ground cardamom fresh nutmeg, a few grates Method In a casserole or deep baking dish, pour in melted butter to cover the bottom. In a bowl, mix together half the sugar, baking powder, salt, polenta, ground almonds and cornflour.

Whisk up the milk and egg into a smooth batter and pour over melted butter.

Sprinkle spices and remaining sugar over the charred peach chunks while still warm in a separate bowl, then spread and dot over the batter but do not stir. Bake for 45 minutes at 170 degrees Celsius until batter comes to the top and is golden brown.

Serve warm with ice cream.

Rail rumblings I’ve just received three options for the Bayfair roundabout and entrance to Owens Place in the mail.

Why, in this age of technology has no engineer come up with the idea of lowering the railway line from Te Maunga and coming up past the golf course.

Then you can put a small over-bridge across the railway line at Bayfair.

The leaflet talks of re-routing the railway line, buying up land etc. What a hassle and expense when lowering the railway line 6-10foot would sort it all out.

Don’t know rules, don’t drive Knit first In response to Kevin Mooney’s concerns with roundabout rules explained in the Weekend Sun (January 17), I feel I must state the obvious.

If you own a motor vehicle and have passed the test to prove you are legally capable of driving this vehicle in a safe and courteous manner in public, then in fact there shouldn’t be any confusion. We are more than a fortnight into 2014 and motorised vehicles

and highways to accommodate them are far from being a commodity.

I think failing to understand the basic rules of correct road use is quite simply inexcusable.

I strongly suggest any socalled driver who still finds themselves in any doubt as to how to correctly navigate any size of roundabout stops driving immediately. I sincerely hope they do.

Searching for Vietnam holiday folk In 2013, I holidaying in Vietnam’s Hanoi, when I met some great people from Tauranga. We exchanged email addresses. I wrote theirs in a book and gave it away to a Vietnamese chap.

One of the guys I met emailed to say hello, wanting to catch up, and I somehow deleted his email address.

The guy who I think was Paul, a Maori chap and his brother, were to meet me and their wives at a bar overlooking one of the busiest roundabouts in Hanoi.

Anyway, the guys’ wives and I met, as agreed, at the bar but there was no sign of the guys. They’d made their way to a bar in the same building higher up that

turned out to be a house of ill repute.

Ahem, anyway, they figured that out and scarpered but didn’t realised their wives and I met two floors below.

Now these were good folk ;and I’m determined to catch up and have the ale with them we should have had there.

Can anyone help? I’m sure there will be someone reading this, who knows these folk; and I’d be very grateful to be put in touch with them. Many thanks.

I’m one of the folk who knits for Romanian and Russian children – the ‘fish and chips’ babies – wrapped in newspaper to keep them warm.

I’ve given quite a bit of wool and I very much appreciate it.

Greerton is a popular suburb of Tauranga and I don’t feel knitting up wool to wrap around trees is necessary. Our children need the knitting.

If the new councillors are keen to get their teeth into projects to benefit Tauranga without costing the ratepayers the earth, then: 1. Change the name to an English name, such as Devonport, Cameron or other.

Maori names do not cut it with the cruise boat people or indeed

most of the locals. Also the current name is out of step with other major towns in NZ. 2 Call tenders for a gondola or cable car, or double monorail up to the top of the Mount. All the council has to do is arrange the paper work.

2. The Marine and Coastal Area Bill was led through parliament by Chris Finlayson, the Attorney Gen-

If all of these items are added up, there’d be no need for breakfasts and lunches at schools.

It’s a parent’s duty to provide the necessities of life for their offspring. In 1930’s Depression, men had to work relief projects for pay. No WINZ back then.

Gender-seating unwelcome guest It’s heartening to see the adverse criticism raging on the powhiri ritual issue .The New Zealand Parliament is sovereign with its own rules, procedures, standing orders etc which should not be controlled by so-called Maori customs.

A powhiri is loosely described as a formal Maori welcoming ceremony.

Clearly Maori interests are not welcoming anyone here; it is quite the reverse.

Parliament is the host and Maori are the visitors. The vast majority of New Zealanders want Parliamentary procedures determined by democratically-elected representatives, not ‘un-elected self-invited guests’.

Every current politician should be canvassed on this issue- those that support the powhiri philosopy should immediately resign and by-elections should held to see what their electorates think about this nonsense.

Although, perhaps wait until the upcoming national General Elections, as no point wasting money on politicians prematurely.

As stated, Parliament is sovereign; it must maintain its own rules and procedures without kowtowing to racial or religious pressures; and there is certainly no place for powhiri to have genderseating demands.

Key addition to streets Tauranga has pianos on the street and it's a wonderful thing.

Anything that adds character to the city is alright with me, especially a bunch of playfully-painted musical instruments that anyone can make friends with.

When I was in London four years ago the same thing was happening, with pianos popping up in unlikely street locations and it was very cool – small crowds would gather around anyone having a play and music was in the air.

I came across the same thing downtown on Monday morning when it was early and the town was all but deserted.

Two girls had stopped at the piano in Willow Street and were fooling around playing “Chopsticks”. '“Chopsticks?”' was my first reaction, '“Really? Someone goes to all this trouble to install a piano and people play “Chopsticks”' Then I kicked myself in the head (figuratively) for being an old grouch. I'm not at my best early in the morning.

They were having fun playing, I was having fun listening, and “Chopsticks” sounded pretty good. This is what it should be about – people having fun with music and bringing a little life and laughter to the town.

New Zealanders – if I may generalise for a second – are a fairly staid people, not given to spontaneous public expressions of music or much else.

Exhibitionism, though it does occur, often with the socially-liberating aid of alcohol, is not high on the list of national characteristics. To watch such an unselfconscious display of public pleasure was actually a rare treat.

And just as I was having this minirevelation a guy wandered up with a

saxophone and joined in.

That pretty much made my day: an impromptu music session on a Monday morning on the streets of the CBD. At times like that Tauranga seems a pretty sweet place to live.

I don't know who the wandering sax player is. By complete coincidence I saw him again on-line a couple of days later, on the Facebook page for Brew, the craft beer pub on The Strand.

Someone had posted video of Aaron and Alicia's last Saturday gig. They were playing on the pavement outside the bar when, yep, up comes the sax player and joins in.

It was cool. They sounded good together and there's something very appealing about the idea that there's a wandering sax player loose downtown, a musical Marie Celeste drifting from street to street bringing music in his wake.

(The pianos, in case you haven't heard, come from an initiative by the Incubator Art collective. They deserve a hearty pat on the back. Drop in and visit their workshop next time you're down at the Historic Village.)

Janneke – Perfect Day Released just before Christmas, Janneke’s Perfect Day album was recorded at The Colourfield Studio in Welcome Bay. It ranges from sunny pop (the opening track or Dutch language romp “Wat Is Liefede”) somewhere in the area of Goldenhorse perhaps, to more introspective ballads and one instrumental, “Hope”.

Janneke has a very pleasant voice, intimate and personal and refreshingly free of American Idol diva stylings, and she writes a lovely melody. After studying music in Waikato she has the ability to produce complex well-thought-out songs that easily slip into the conciousness.

I must confess to feeling a certain disconnect from her lyrics which can veer towards the sentimental and are aimed towards family and friends and, I assume - on songs such as “It Is You” - God. Things slip towards the saccharine with “The Way You Love Me”, a song for her mother. But perhaps I’m too hard-hearted: others will obviously be unconcerned by this.

What impress me most are the immaculate arrangements and faultless playing. And, unlike many such efforts, it wasn’t a job for half the town’s musicians. The band

comprises solely Janneke (vocals and acoustic guitar), Abbie Smith on other guitars, drums and percussion from Ian “Beano” Gilpin, and bass and many keyboard bits from producer Tim Julian. Leilani and Andrew Glover help out with backing vocals.

Together they create a rich tapestry, with some particularly fine work from Beano, who has long been Tauranga’s most in-demand studio drummer and here really stretches out to creates unusual and interesting textures with his rhythms.

Meanwhile, Tim takes credit for the tasteful arrangements which provide a lush and varied bed for Janneke’s voice.

Fantastic Not bad at all Dreadful

STOKER Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Matthew Goode, Nicole Kidman - Dir: Park Chan-Wook When foreign directors relocate to Hollywood it can go either way but usually results in a downward trajectory. For every Ang Lee who has flourished, there are a dozen John Woos who were artistically muzzled by the system or simply failed to connect with American sensibilities.

With South Korea’s Park Chan-Wook (Old Boy, Lady Vengence) it was anybody’s guess, given his twin gifts for lyricism and brutality, not necessarily the right combo for Western tastes. He did, after all, have his lead actor in Old Boy eat, for real, a live octopus.

But Stoker is brilliant. Right from the mysterious opening credits with their clever unsettling

editing and slightly off-kilter voice-over, you know you’re in safe hands. They climax with a death in the family: Wasikowska’s father, Kidman’s husband, has died and the funeral attracts the presence of creepily charismatic Uncle Charlie (Goode), who comes to stay.

They are a strange family – Kidman at her fragile porcelain oddest – and Charlie has darker secrets to be revealed. People die; it gets intense. This is not a happy family. Actually, the less one knows about the plot, the better; ignorance, in this case, makes for cinematic bliss.

What with spending the last couple of weeks assessing the Best of 2013, I’m now way behind on movie reviews. (To see the ‘Best of ’ lists, check them out online at Sunlive.) So many movies, so little time...

Pain & Gain is really a companion piece to 2 Guns. That looked like a faux-Michael Bay actioner, this is a real Michael Bay actioner. Both are buddy flicks, and both star Mark Wahlberg. His partner in crime this time is The Rock, with Mr Johnson providing an entertainingly self-deprecating performance. They’re bodybuilders, who decide to rip off their (criminal) clients and live the high life. It’s a lot of fun, with the running gag being that – pumped up with motivation though they may be – these guys aren’t too smart.

In a similar action/comedy vein, Red 2 is simply less of the same when compared to Red. The same crew turn up, do the same gags, and pick up a paycheque. If you liked the first one, you’ll like this. Just not as much.

The other is Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters ( which again ruins its source material, misses the humour and irritates as often as it thrills. In it Percy (son of Poseidon), must find the golden fleece to prove he’s no “one quest wonder”.

With The Heat Hollywood again struggles to find a decent vehicle for postBridesmaids Melissa McCarthy. It’s better than Identity Thief but her cop-buddy pairing with Sandra Bullock is largely an ill-judged laughter-free zone.

Funnier, though also struggling to fill its runtime with hilarity, is We’re The Millers which certainly has its moments, but not enough. Jennifer Aniston has fun as a stripper and young Will Poulter is very funny but the story of an imaginary family, concocted to do a drug run to Mexico, rambles.

The Look of Love finds Steve Coogan in good form but Michael Winterbottom’s biopic of London porn baron Paul Raymond feels surprisingly colourless.

The Frozen Ground is a pretty decent thriller: Nic Cage’s dedicated cop, John Cussack’s long-term serial killer. It’s dour and serious, and the fact that it, apparently, sticks pretty close to the true story only makes it more depressing.

Urzila’s coming to tickle your funny bone Award winning comedian Urzila Carlson.

Jokes aside – a group of four comedians coming to Tauranga next weekend is set to tickle your funny bone.

The Laugh Club New Zealand is bringing ‘7 Days’ regular Urzila Carlson, Billy T Award winner Justine Smith, 2014 Billy T Award nominee Jamaine Ross and show host Tarun Mohanbhai to Tauranga for a onenight show on January 31.

Speaking to The Weekend Sun ahead of the event, award-winning comedian Urzila says the show at Club Mount Maunganui is not set to be different from any other comedy night she’s been part of – but the audience can expect some hilarious hijinks.

“There should be drinks, laughs and people having a great time, so hopefully all of those elements will be there.”

First appearing in a stand-up comedy show on St Patrick’s Day six years ago, Urzila has earned an array of awards for her joke-telling ability – including Best Newcomer in 2008 and Best Female Comedian in the

NZ Comedy Awards for four consecutive years from 2010-2013.

Gaining inspiration for her gags from both her life and others’, Urzila says she didn’t choose to be a comedian – comedy chose her.

“I just fell into it and it has treated me very well, which I’m very thankful for.”

Finely-tuned triathletes are set to splash and dash their way across Pilot Bay on Monday, reigniting their athletic assault on Mount Maunganui in the Pilot Bay Classic.

Monday’s event, doubling as round two of the annual Eves Triathlon Series, boasts a variety of triathletes and abilities from New Zealand representatives right through to those starting their triathlon careers.

The classic, following the Shorebreak Surfbreaker in December, is part of a trio of triathlons, with the Coronation Classic finishing off the series on March 2.

The Eves-sponsored Surfbreaker triathlon attracts competitors throughout the Bay to compete in the sprint distance – 750m swim, 16km bike, 5km run – and the super sprint distance of 375m swim, 8km bike and 2.5km run.

A duathlon consisting of a 2-3km run, 16-20km cycle and 5km run is also available.

And one competitor keen to hit the ground running - literally - is 24-year-old David Baker, fresh from enjoying his first Port of Tauranga Half Ironman on January 4.

The Focus on Property property consultant says he took up the sport after being pulled by the hype and excitement around the half ironman – setting himself the time-consuming task last August.

Clocking up endless hours and kilometres across the three disciplines, including more than 2000km on the bike, David is content with his maiden achievements this summer including a five hour and 18 minute half ironman – but has aspirations to eclipse these next summer.

“The sport is a lot harder than I thought it would be; plus it is quite a solitary sport that takes up a lot of time,” says David.

“But I definitely enjoy getting out and testing

“For me doing the first Surfbreaker Tri, it was more still doing it as a build up for the half ironman, but now I’m concentrating on speed for the Kinloch [Kiwi tri series] race. The Eves series is great race experience.”

The Pilot Bay Classic starts 8am on Monday.

All eyes will be on the skies this weekend, with the Classics of the Sky – Tauranga City Airshow taking off in the Bay.

The newshounds, being bird dogs, are pretty used to scouring the skies for large birds. We’ve got a good set of identifying skills, and we’re able to track and trace all of the regular flying critters around here.

And we tackle most of them too, except the bolshy swan in the lakes this week. Uncle doesn’t like them much, and even less now that the big black bugger nearly stopped me retrieving the ball. Those sods will keep, till

early May, when the newshounds and our friend Benelli will turn the tables!

Anyway, back to the airshow, Ady and I are all organised. I even have a plane sorted.

The newshounds have been drawing inspiration from that infamous aviator mutt, Snoopy. Seeing those two seater bi-planes tearing around the skies, we reckon the newshounds could make - Flo pretty good dogfighters!

Teen leads police on chase A 14-year-old driver with a car load full of teens led police on a 19km chase through the city on Monday night before she was stopped by road spikes.

Acting Senior Sergeant Tristan Murray says the girl failed to stop for police in Welcome Bay, leading to a pursuit to Mount Maunganui and back to Papamoa.

He says the chase ended when the 14-year-old drove over road spikes on Gravatt Road in Papamoa.

“There were three people in the car, the 14-year-old driver and two 15-year-old girls.

“The 14-year-old has been referred to Youth Aid. She may go to court at a later stage but there is no indication of that yet.” The teen faces charges of drink driving and failing to stop for police.

Paedophile takes Thai holiday

A Tauranga paedophile who breached bail by taking a trip to Thailand when he was due to be sentenced has been jailed for six and a half years for offending against young girls.

Richard Neil Smith was originally due to be sentenced in Tauranga District Court in December but instead travelled to Thailand for a holiday after hearing of his likely jail time at a sentence indication hearing on October 8.

In court on Monday, Denise Clark sentenced Smith to six and a half years on the sexual violation charge, and concurrent sentences of three years and two years on the other charges. She set no minimum non-parole period.

Shark in Papamoa shallows

A Mount Maunganui couple on their morning walk were taken aback when they spotted a shark just metres from shore.

Richard Hoit and his wife Trish were out walking along the oceanbeach between Harrisons Cut and Papamoa Surf Club early Sunday morning when they spotted the shark, believed to be a bronze whaler.

Richard estimates the shark to be about 7-8feet long between the dorsal fin and back tail fin.

Quake shakes Bay residents

Bay of Plenty residents holidaying or working away from home are among those rattled by the 6.3 earthquake which struck the lower North Island on Monday.

GeoNet reports a severe quake struck just before 4pm and was centred five kilometres north of Castlepoint on the Wairarapa coast at a depth of 90km.

Papamoa resident Audrey Jensen was at her second home in Wellington when the quake struck this afternoon, and says the whole house felt as if it were spinning.

Sun Media general manager Ross Brown is on holiday in Palmerston North and felt the quake severely – saying the shaking felt like it lasted about a minute.

GeoNet reports the Wairarapa is no stranger to large earthquakes, with two very damaging magnitude 7 quakes in 1942. The region’s last earthquake above magnitude 6 was in 1961.

While most cats that are taken into ARRC as strays are tame and make wonderful pets, some are not used to being handled although they are used to humans and are lovely animals.

Many of these cats make excellent companions on farms as they are brilliant hunters, helping to ‘pay their rent’ by controlling rodent and pest populations.

Change before you have to So how are you getting on with those resolutions? How’s that gym membership?

What about those Christmas kilograms? Gone yet? Chances are many gym memberships are already or close to being redundant along with many other well-intentioned resolutions.

When you look at your life, are you happy with what you see? Chances are there will be some parts that are going great, and others you would desperately like to change.

Not many of us like change, but change is completely necessary. Many people approach the idea of change with anxiety, frustration and even resistance.

We often only change because we have to.

A heart attack causes us to start exercising or eat right; we seek budgeting advice after our car has been towed away; we go to counselling after our wife has left with the children.

What if you could ‘change’ before you have to?

God knows what He wants in 2014 It’s easy, as we start a New Year period, to simply repeat previous years. We may even mentally summarise the previous year while speculating the year ahead.

I suggest we ask God what He thinks.

What desires, plans or expectations does He hold for our lives for the coming year? What changes? What fresh friendships, values or beliefs?

Consider for a moment what old things He wants to fade out of our lives. These are courageous thoughts.

Challenges

In Ephesians 4:22-24 of the Bible, the apostle Paul challenged Christians to consider what they had been taught regarding their pre-Christian life: “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being

corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness”.

Experience God

Paul tells us that God’s resolution for our lives is for His righteousness to be experienced – through the attitudes of our thinking changing from what they used to be, to reflect His holiness.
