We’ve been overwhelmed* with responses to last week’s call for examples of Kiwi ingenuity.

Three in particular stood out as exceptional (probably because those were the only three that we received) so we’ve decided to feature them in this week’s column.

You may recall, those with extraordinary memories, that the idea of celebrating Kiwi inventiveness stemmed from our column about creative jandal repairs. We asked you to tell us about your jandal reconstructions, plus any other examples of general ‘Nuzzilon’ fancy fix ups.

Tony: Most guys become very attached to their footwear.

My jandals are very comfortable and conform to my feet, but have worn through the soles, though the straps are still good. Go to a shoe repairer for quote to re-sole…when the guy stopped laughing, he quoted me $30-$40. So off to Mitre 10 to buy a cheap pair of $4 Chinese jandals and a tube of rubber epoxy. Cut off the straps of the cheapies and glue soles under my old jandals and hey presto! They’re good for another 10,000 km.

Just sign me ‘Tony’...I can do without the heckling from my buddies.Keep up those great editorials...luv ‘em.

Barb Johnson: I’ve just got home to enjoy my weekly reading of your column, and you have failed to address another aspect of the jandal. Many years ago I was working in a local bank, a young man came in to open up a bank account. I asked him for some form of identification, he thought about it for a while, then bent down, took off his jandals and passed them to me across the counter. His jandals had his initials burnt into them.

Meanwhile, in other news, the Tauranga Silly Council is drawing considerable flak from readers of the Sun and SunLive, for shelling out $5m bailout for Baypark, stalling the marine industry precinct dead in the water, but considering a monument to Hairy Maclary down on The Strand.

I’m sure it will be of great comfort to unemployed boatbuilders that they’ll be able to spend their idle days down on the waterfront, marvelling over a statue of a fictitious stray mongrel.

Which started us wondering, how would Lynley Dodds, Hairy’s creator, record the deliberations of the Tauranga Silly Council?

A 73-year-old victim of failed finance company Bluechip is appealing for people to join his protest over the court-ordered sale of his family farm.

The 20.3 hectare dairy-beef farm on Kaiate Falls Road is going under the hammer in March and Bryan Jones and his supporters are attending the auction with protest placards.

“I understand that my daughterin-law has gone on Facebook and she’s got 300 friends and her 300 friends have got 300 friends each and they are all sympathetic towards what’s happened here and it sounds like they are all going to turn up at the sale.”

They are protesting the ordered sale as the series of events leading up to the court order involve foul

play by failed finance company Bluechip.

Unlike many of the Bluechip victims, however, Bryan did invest in real property – only he did not know it and the contract detail saw him liable for much more than he realised.

Bryan believed he had invested $70,000, but once Bluechip collapsed in 2007, he learned he owed the bank $450,000 and a property developer an additional $700,000.

“I was never told about it by a legal advisor and I have got no show of paying it anyway, and if it had been explained to me at the time, I never would have signed such a deal.”

An attempt to broker a deal with the developer was made, but its terms fell short of being acceptable for Bryan and so the developer pursued a court order to sell the farm.

Bryan and his wife, two of their three children and four grandchildren – soon to be six – all live on the farm.

Bryan says the whole scenario is crooked and it is unfair on him when it was Bluechip that roped him in to it.

“The broker that did the deal with me, he got taken to court, he got prosecuted and he was on his way to prison, but before they got the door shut, he died of cancer.”

With the family farm at stake, Bryan stands to lose everything.

“There is no doubt about it that when this has all happened I am going to be bankrupt – there is no doubt about that.

“The way I see it, I will be out on the street on $230 a week and living on food parcels.”

Naked reaction worlds apart

It’s the first time Tauranga has been included in the World Naked Bike Ride, a light hearted international event held to protest vehicle emissions.

On March 10, cyclists wearing as little as they dare are going to pedal along the beach from near the Omanu surf club to the Papamoa Domain.

Some residents near the beach have expressed opposition, with one saying he wants to form a human chain to block the beach

and force the cyclists into the water.

“This is the only city in the world to get a reaction like this,” says Andrew.

“What I want to know is why Tauranga is so different from the rest of the world, not just New Zealand, but the rest of the world.”

Of the 70 cities around the world where the Naked Bike Ride is held, there has been no opposition says Andrew, and Tauranga’s opposition will make the city look bad internationally.

“The world is watching,” says Andrew.

“It looks like it is not a nice place to come to if people want to come to a friendly place to have a

holiday.

“They don’t want to see people come out of the woodwork and discriminate against everyone’s life style.

“I have put Tauranga on the world map by doing this.”

Tauranga is registered on the World Naked Bike ride website in Vancouver and the world is watching because Tauranga is the first city in the southern hemisphere to take part in the event.

“Right at the end of the week we had a dedication service to thank everyone and just seeing the gratitude and the tears was really touching.”

The families have to pay off the cost of the building materials as a long-term loan. Tauranga’s 15-member team is being joined by similar groups from Hamilton and Auckland, along with a US-contingent of 50 volunteers, who will all work alongside the families to build 20 new homes.

The building systems will be different this time to suit the conditions, with plaster over polystyrene bricks offering a highly insulated home for Mongolia’s extreme winters, compared to the bamboo-framed houses in Nepal that were woven with bamboo strips then plastered.

Marilyn is looking for more members for the team which departs in June. She says helpers do not need to be natural handy people as they can help in a range of jobs. Anyone interested can email msing@xtra.co.nz

The sky’s the limit for solo glider

From the roar and thunder of the racetrack, to the tranquil serenity of the sky, Kiera Nesdale is taking it all on in her love of adrenalin.

The former Otumoetai College student recently went solo in a Puchacz glider, a feat not many 18-year-olds could claim.

“It was incredible. It is such a free and relaxing experience and the views are amazing, especially as you go over the Mount.

“I just kept thinking I can do this, and the whole way I was grinning to myself.”

The student, who heads off to Otago University in Dunedin to embark on a degree in Health Science, says she got into gliding when her father purchased her a gliding experience at the Tauranga Gliding Club.

“My dad got me a flight as a birthday present, he has funded me

all the way through and encouraged me to do it. I loved it and promised him that I would go solo before I went to university.”

With the assistance of club instructors, Kiera completed a total of 54 flights before going solo.

“I really wasn’t expecting it actually. We went for a flight and had gone through all of the procedures and then the instructor said ‘you’re going solo’, I was a bit nervous.

“The instructor told me to think about my flight and use what I had learnt.”

Tauranga Gliding Club president Paul Ellison says Kiera is as competent as any experienced glider pilot.

“I was flying nearby when Kiera went for her solo flight and I was listening to her deal with the control tower, which is quite difficult to do, she was so focused on what was going on around her.”

Paul says Tauranga Airport is one of the busiest and most difficult

airports to navigate around, and Kiera handles this well.

“You need to build up a mental picture of what the air traffic is doing.”

Not only is she a keen pilot, Kiera is also a superstar on the racetrack.

She began racing mini stock cars at the age of 15, spending two seasons in this class before graduating to saloon cars for this season’s series at Baypark.

Kiera says she has always been into sports, which keep her busy and out of trouble.

“Speedway is totally different from gliding, it is so energetic – there is mud flying at your face, you’re going really fast – they are two totally different feelings.”

She has met many friends at the club, even if they are “40 years older” than her, and is intending to continue flying, coming back to the club in her university holidays.

Adult Boutique rejects being controversial The change of scene hasn’t been an easy one, but Aristocrat Adult Boutique owner John McCoy says it is cheaper rent, not controversy he is after.

After 20 years on Cameron Road, John and his wife Gloria are about to open the doors to his newly relocated store on Chadwick Road – about 100 metres from the Greerton Village School at the village shopping centre.

John says it was a logical move due to

He says the first shop they opened in Tauranga 15 years ago was opposite the Salvation Army Family Store on Cameron Road, almost next door to Tauranga Primary School and never once received a complaint.

“I don’t think these people understand what we do. They think it is a sex shop, but we don’t sell sex.”

Aristocrat is a family-owned business which employs John and Gloria and their daughter Caroline, together with two other staff.

The boutique offers a discreet service to many clients, some of whom have belonged to their DVD library for the last 20 years.

“Our DVDs have been classified

by the New Zealand censor and are the same as stocked by your suburban video library, the difference being ours is an R18 store.

“All our other products are stocked in mainstream stores.

These include magazines which are in dairies and service stations, and condoms which are also available in supermarkets.”

The new shop front on Chadwick Road features the store’s name and the inside of the shop is not visible from the outside.

John says people cannot be offended walking past the store as frosted glass blocks the view into the shop and the doorway is screened off.

“People don’t have any reason to hang around outside because they cannot see inside the shop, all there is, is the name of the shop. If

you’re not 18 you don’t get in.

“Unless people tell the children what is in there, they would never know.”

John welcomes all past and present customers to come and visit the new premises, where they will be assured of finding the same friendly staff waiting to greet them. John says they enforce a strict R18 policy including asking anyone they are not sure of for identification.

“Normal, ordinary people are our customers. A lot of people appreciate that they can come in the shop and everyone is doing the same thing,” says John.

“No one feels embarrassed. All we have had is positive feedback.

We have customers from 18 to 85 come in.”

String of business burglaries in Katikati Katikati police are urging all businesses and commercial premises in the area to review their security after a recent spike in break-ins and burglaries.

Senior constable John Fitzgerald says there has been a significant jump in incidents during the last month, but is unable to say whether they are linked.

“We recommend business owners install alarms and pay more attention to their security arrangements,” says John.

Recent burglaries included a Honda 350TRX quad bike and trailer stolen overnight from a farm storage shed near Taupiro Road North (on State Highway 2) on February 17 and a safe with a small sum of cash stolen in a break-in at PGG Wrightson in Katikati overnight on February 16.

Cigarettes were stolen in a ram-raid on Omokoroa’s Shell petrol station at 5am on February 14, while tools were taken from a shed in the We Move Houses yard in Katikati’s Marshall Road overnight on February 12.

Burglars who broke into the Talisman Hotel overnight on February 11 unsuccessfully tried to steal from the ATM’s cashbox, while two rings were taken in a smash and grab from Katikati Antiques at 11.15pm on February 6. These followed two linked break-ins to shops in the Cherry Court shopping area at 12.30am overnight on January 27 when both Fibre and Fabric and Tailored Hair Salon were broken into and small sums of cash were stolen. Two attempts to break into Video Ezy on January 26 and 31 were both unsuccessful.

Where angels fear to tread An eventful Full Council meeting this week saw quite a divergence of opinion on a number of matters.

One was a clash between Bob Clarkson and Harry Wilson from The Agency (formerly Transit) over access to Mr Clarkson’s land at Tauriko onto the State Highway. Bob Clarkson had previously told Council that he had “provisional go ahead for my industrial stuff behind the Tauriko Service Station, two lane roundabout with a slip lane on it. Got to be a few safety issues dealt with, but Transit have basically ticked it off.” Mr Wilson from The Agency (TA) said that TA had not approved anything.

The State Highway was to become a Road of National Significance (RONS) to provide connectivity to the Port of Tauranga with the Waikato. The Agency did not want any extra traffic that had not been already planned for, accessing the State Highway. The Agency would not countenance anything that might compromise freight efficiency or affect the proposed Tauriko Bypass. Sound planning meant investment by the Government in roading and Tauranga’s Port economy was of national importance.

Mr Clarkson was vociferous in his reaction to Mr Wilson’s comments. At the end of their verbal exchanges Mayor Stuart Crosby referred the meeting back to the

Notice of Motion moved by me and Rick Curach that encouraged Mr Clarkson to lodge a Private Plan Change to effect a zoning change for his affordable home proposal on Mr Clarkson’s 100 acres or so that is within the City Boundary. We were also unaware that Mr Clarkson and The Agency are in mediation – a legal process.

This was all a situation that we were unaware of, in fact a situation where angels would fear to tread and is no place for ratepayers to be sucked into a legal vortex.

It transpired that the law would not allow any change within two years of the new city plan being declared and that has yet to happen. On the strength of all of this I declined to formally move the Notice of Motion.

Yet another petition to have speed humps removed, this time from Hollister Lane. The humps were installed as a result of a petition to Council a couple of years ago. This is a familiar story.

Unfortunately speed humps have to be outside someone’s home and the ongoing thumping of vehicles creates a major disturbance to nearby residents. The best solution is to get signed approval from those likely to be affected because of the cost of installation and later removal is an unnecessary and increasingly frequent ratepayer expense. Speeding vehicles are a police enforcement issue.

Hairy’s home Hairy Maclary and friends sculpture project will proceed on the Strand waterfront. To cost $850,000 to be raised by Creative Tauranga but owned by the Council there will be a $150,000 maintenance fund gifted by Creative in trust – the intention being no cost implications to ratepayers.

At long last there will be a temporary car parking provided on the old Cliff Road netball courts.

Space for 72 cars at $2.50 per day to replace parking currently taking place on street berms in the area.

sat there largely unused while the surrounding street berms were parked on. Long term use of this prime land is undecided and in my opinion will remain so for an equally long time. $20,000 shared 50/50 with The Agency is the cost of signs to assist motorists with the March 25th change to traffic laws. You know that rule about right turning traffic across the face of oncoming traffic having the right of way over left turning traffic. The only country in the world doing it since it was changed in 1979. It will be a panelbeaters dream no doubt. I’m reminded of my dad when I learned to drive. He told me to remember this: “Here lies the body of Henry Day who died defending his right of way. He was right, dead right, as he sped along – but he’s just as dead as if he’d been wrong.” Sorry about that!

No major objections

A surprising outcome to a suggested resolution basically requesting funding ($20,000 plus staff resource) to produce a business plan for a Marine Precinct at Sulphur Point. At workshops in December no major objections were raised. But at the meeting it was defeated 5-4 with Mayor Stuart and Terry Molloy having left the meeting early. It’s understandable and easy to see both sides of the matter. On the one hand ratepayers are up against it and on the other hand it’s a good time to stimulate economic growth. The intention was to sell some other property and apply to the Regional Council for funding from their Infrastructure Fund.

But Murray Guy, Rick Curach, Catherine Stewart, Bill Grainger and Wayne Moultrie said the debt repayment and other priorities

should prevail. David Stewart, me, Tony Christiansen and Larry Baldock thought that a business plan would outline all the concerns and issues. It would be interesting to see if the opposition and reasoning follows through to other proposals in the three year/10 year plan or if this is a one off.

Tsunami sirens tenders have been received. Three elected members will join staff to evaluate the proposals. It looks like they will be sited at wastewa-

ter pump stations (electricity supply) and up on poles. I see a speed hump situation developing here! But public demand should be met although I wonder how many people would take any notice of them after the novelty has worn off.

Hairy Maclary fundraising starts The Hairy Maclary concept plan.

The sculptor is chosen, the site is almost decided, and it remains only for Creative Tauranga to raise $800,000 to bring a collection of bronze Hairy Maclary sculptures to Tauranga.

Creative Tauranga met with TECT this week, the day after the city council voted on the agreement, settling site, maintenance and insurance issues.

The preferred site is now on The Strand Reclamation, opposite the Masonic Park, which will also place it beside the yet to be built children’s playground, planned as part of the waterfront redevelopment.

The plan is to have all the sculptures together on the one site – including Schnitzel von Krumm with a very low tum, Bitzer Maloney all skinny and bony, Muffin McLay like a bundle of hay, Bottomly Potts covered in spots, Hercules Morse as big as a horse,

Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy and of course Scarface Claw.

Creative Tauranga wants to have at least half the money raised before the works are commissioned says chief executive Tracey Rudduck-Gudsell.

“We don’t want to ‘push play’ till we get most of it there, we are taking as little risk as possible,’ says Tracey.

TECT has already provided the $30,000 seed money to put out the call for expressions of interest in the project.

In addition to TECT interest, there are family trusts that have pledged money to the project and Tracey says one individual has pledged $80,000.

The fundraising is expected to be completed by the end of the financial year, with the installation completed by June 1, 2013.

A helping hand Even when Barbara Baldock is on the other side of the globe from her husband, they still talk every day.

A chair-side dental assistant, Barbara is married to Tauranga City Councillor Larry Baldock, who is also involved in national politics as a 2011 Conservative Party candidate and former Kiwi Party leader and United Future MP.

“I support him 100 per cent in his political career and have been prominently involved in a lot of the issues Larry brings home, especially the anti-smacking issue,” says Barbara.

The couple took a 310,000 signature petition to parliament against the Child Discipline Act, which forced a referendum in 2009.

As a mother and grandmother, Barbara still believes strongly in parents’ right to discipline their

children with a smack.

She describes Larry as her ‘absolute best friend’.

“We’re a great team. We’ve been married 34 years – 35 in April and I have to say our relationship is still growing. It just gets better.”

Barbara moved to Tauranga from Ashburton at age 12. She met Larry at Mount Maunganui Baptist Church in 1976, not long after returning from three months volunteering in the Philippines.

Larry shared her passion for helping others and the young couple opened their home to people with drug addiction and other problems. They soon realised, however, they needed training to really help people – so they shifted to Auckland to pursue this.

Barbara’s interest in missionary work took them to the Philippines with Youth with a Mission from 1981 to 1996. Their children – Sarah, Rachael and Nathaniel – studied through New Zealand correspondence school during this time, which added to the family’s close bond that continues today – even though the girls live in Germany and Switzerland and Nathaniel in Australia.

The Baldocks have six grandchildren now and Barbara has travelled to Europe each time one is born, leaving Larry at home in New Zealand. To cover trip costs, she spends part of the trip in England, caring for the elderly in their own homes.

Barbara says this time apart only strengthens their relationship.

“We talk on the phone every morning and every night when we’re apart and there’s Skype now, so we see each other.

“We don’t get bored with each other and we enjoy adventures. And if he needed me to come home, I’d be on the next plane.”

New Zealand women celebrate Members of the New Zealand Federation of Women’s Institute celebrated 91 years of fun and friendship this month.

It has been a busy year for the institute – they have donated more than 8000 knitted articles for neonatal units, through to the elderly in rest homes, prepared food and desired articles for organisations such as local food banks and Women’s Refuge and the SPCA. They have also fundraised more than $47,000 for the survivors of the Christchurch earthquakes.

The institute is known for helping worthy causes, and has provided these items to more than 30 organisations nationally. As well as providing clothing, they also donated 390 toilet bags filled for emergency hospital patients who are not prepared for their admittance.

“Our members are very capable and generous with their time and efforts, so taking time to celebrate our 91st year is a great way to start another year,” says National president Jeanette Andrews.

Although ties are optional, Jodie Thorne, Lauren Vosper, Sue Dobson and Frank Vosper get dressed up.

The bow tie – is a fashion piece that appears to be simple, but the reality is it takes considerable skill to tie one correctly. It’s aptly symbolic of an individual’s everyday struggle with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular conditions.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association’s annual Bow Tie Appeal is on again this March 17 to March 25.

In the most basic explanation, muscular dystrophy, which is just one of more than 60 different neuromuscular conditions the MDA supports, are a group of inherited disorders that result in muscle weakness and loss of muscle tissue, which get worse over time.

As a non-profit organisation, the appeal is a fundraising venture to support the association and bring awareness to those who are affected by these conditions.

One particular event is the Picnic in the Park at Omokoroa on Sunday, February 26 from 2pm to

5pm, in lead up to the appeal week.

For the third year, the event is organised with the help of Rina and Warwick Francis, with an afternoon of music and entertainment.

“It’s a really fun afternoon for all the family,” says Jodie Thorne, a member of the Muscular Dystrophy Association who also has FSH MD. “They play a real mixture of songs for all ages so there really is something for everyone!”

Jodie says each year the event has raised $1000 for the association, and this year the members are hoping to top that.

“Everyone’s invited so bring the family, a chair, a picnic, choose your spot under the walnut trees and park up for an afternoon of musical entertainment – which usually culminates in some dancing for the more energetic amongst the crowd,” says Jodie.

The event is entry by gold coin donation, and starts at 2pm from Walnut Grove, Myrtle Drive, Omokoroa.

Bike tour kicks off event

Environmental education with a difference, with the Bay of Plenty’s first ever cycling lecture, marks the beginning of the Sustainable Backyards event calendar for 2012.

The two-leg cycle tour travels from the University of Waikato Coastal Marine Field Station in Sulphur Point to Fergusson Park and back.

Narrated by Professor Chris Battershill and Manaaki Taha Moana researcher lead researcher Caine Taiapa the pair will stop along the way at points of historical and environmental interest.

Caine says historical points focus on original sites of occupation, targeting areas which were used for harvesting shellfish and fishing, as well as stopping at a number of Pa sites.

Chris says environmental points include looking at algae blooms such as sea lettuce, oysters among the rocks, evidence of seeding activities by stingrays and general ecology.

Chris says this tour is of interest for Bay of Plenty residents, as the

environment and ecology is an ever-changing scene.

“Most people who live within eyesight of estuary in the Bay of Plenty know that mangroves are proliferating, harbour is shallowing, and it is progressively changing.

“There is a lot more pressure by population, swans and other things, and on top of that, we are all going through changing climate, systems shifting offshore which have effects on coastal environment.”

of Rena and the effects it had on the coastline, but Chris admits “we got off lightly and the critical period is over”.

Kapa haka warriors a moving experience

I was privileged to attend the Kapa Haka regional competition in Rotorua last Saturday. It was, to say the least, a moving experience. These fearsome warriors were part of Nga Potiki a Hinehopu who finished in sixth place. The image was taken with no flash, using a sensitivity of 4000 ISO on a Nikon D3 camera.

Great efforts of Tauranga Moana Tena koutou katoa. I hope you enjoyed a restful Christmas break despite the weather.

E hoa ma, it has been some time since I presented a column to The Weekend Sun. The matter of an election got in the way and in that regard, I thank you for your faith in me as MP for Waiariki. I intend to do my best to repay that faith.

Of course, the biggest issue affecting Tauranga – right from before

the election through to now – is the grounding of the Rena. I do not intend to engage in the various arguments of why, how, responsibility and so on – that’s not to say the hard questions mustn’t be asked, but more that there are other forums to do that – and indeed we must.

My emphasis today, however, is to pay tribute to the fantastic efforts of the Tauranga community during the catastrophe. I have been able to see up close a lot of the carnage having

flown around Motiti, Matakana, Bowentown, Waihi and across the sea to the vessel itself when it was breaking up and there were containers on the beach as well as at sea.

One is left in awe at what Tangaroa was capable of.

Climate change for Bay of Plenty There is no doubt the earth’s climate is warming. Scientists have no doubts at all, but what do you think?

Despite the cooling effects of a strong La Nina in 2011, it was globally the ninth warmest year since 1880.

At council last week, we were advised by the scientists that we can expect New Zealand’s wind patterns to shift, which will also have an effect on future rainfall.

Warming will be fairly uniform across our region, the Bay of Plenty, but not all seasons will warm at the same rate.

Autumn and winter will warm slightly more than summer or spring.

Summer – how does this affect us? Hot days, that is days that are greater than 25 degrees, are tipped to become the summer norm within the next 30 years.

Let’s put political bias aside, overcome our fears, and ensure that she is resourced to do her job.

Learning new give-way rules With the give-way rule on the brink of change, The Tauranga-Western Bay of Plenty Road Safety Group initiative is giving you plenty of time to become educated about the change.

From 5am on March 25, there will be two significant changes to the give-way rule at intersections.

The first change is the ‘left turn versus right turn’ rule, where all traffic turning right give-way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left.

This applies at cross roads, T-intersections and driveways, where both vehicles are facing each other with no signs or signals or the same signs or signals. Tauranga and Western BOP road safety coordinator Lynette Hines says the change is designed to bring New Zealand in-line with the rest of the world.

The second change is at uncon-

trolled T-intersections where all traffic from the bottom of the T will have to give-way to all traffic on a continuing road top of the T. Lynette says this may cause confusion to some drivers as many had always given way in this manner.

The Tauranga and WBOP Road Safety Initiative is running community seminars form March 1 to March 9. Lynette says while NZTA is running a widespread campaign 10 days before the change, the organisation wants to educate the community earlier to give them the chance to listen and take it all in

and be able to ask questions before being presented with the change.

The seminars are presented by Kevin Brooks from Brooks Driving School, and April McRae from April’s Driving School, both with teaching and police backgrounds.

These instructors will discuss and introduce the new rule as well as explain existing rules to keep members of the community up to speed.

Athenree: A new city centre The plan released this week for the development of a Bowentown beachfront complex is a local initiative which includes a marina, retail area, supermarket and a school.

It has come from frustration with the lack of development around Waihi Beach and Athenree. The design has opened up a wide discussion on the need for an overall plan for the whole of the Northern Harbour subregion, including Katikati, Athenree and Waihi Beach.

In 1951, Waihi Beach and Mount Maunganui were very similar, equivalent little holiday towns.

When suitable roads went in and when the bridge was built, the Mount With Brian Anderson developed into the centre it is today, but Waihi Beach has not been allowed to develop.

The frustration spilled over a couple of years ago when residents appealed to local government to have Waihi Beach leave Western Bay and restore links with Waihi and the Hauraki District.

Heading into tough competition Success at Piha isn’t always about stroke technique or rating; it’s usually got more to conquering fears and rowing for survival.

Omanu’s top men’s crew scored a shock win at Piha last year, while the Mount Maunganui women’s and under-19 crews are set for a rugged introduction to the mean waves out west.

While the Oceans 12 NZ under-14 surf lifesaving championships are in full swing at Mount Maunganui this week, several boat crews will be heading right outside their comfort zone to the Piha Big Wave Classic.

Papamoa had another successful weekend overall, with the excellent training of our Rookie Lifeguards on show again with a win at the Rookie Team championships on Sunday. As our future lifeguards, it is great to see this great confidence and skill level coming through.

Papamoa sent a team of 11 athletes to the Northern Regional

The annual surf boat spectacular – the final round of the national series – is held at the rugged West Coast beach near Auckland, amidst some of the biggest waves around.

Championships at Ruakaka and our athletes all dominated their individual and team events in their respective age groups.

Some highlights were Danny Hart taking out the under-16 men’s board race and, along with Mathew Stewart, also winning the under-16 board rescue. Matt Strange had an excellent weekend winning the under-19 board race and ski race, anchoring the winning under-19 board relay and taplin teams, and finishing second to teammate Michael Bryant in the under-19 ironman.

Third-placed Hamish Smith, completed a clean sweep in the under-19 board race.

The Rookie Team championships during the weekend attracted a strong representation from Omanu.

Unfortunately, we were the only club to enter a senior lifeguard team and the competition was cancelled. Our Rookie team of Emma Byrom, Libby Moore, Luc Brinkley-Richards, Blake Dawson and Sam Ellertson-Mau competed very well. This event tested both their theory knowledge as well as

water events. There were some tough scenarios and they performed well.

Thanks to Trish Mau for managing the team, who have learned a lot from the experience. We look forward to them all completing their Life Guard award in the next year and patrolling at Omanu.

A small team of senior athletes travelled to Ruakaka for the Northern Region Champs – Dannielle O’Connor had a great weekend, winning the under-19 swim, rung to the start of the open swim race and finishing a creditable ninth. We had four 14-year-olds who competed up in the under-16 events – Sam Groot, Ben Elisara, Josh Jarvis and Fletcher Swan – and it was great to see them qualify for a number of finals.

After the success of our edge of the outback tour to NSW last September, our next venture is through the Queensland outback, right up to the Gulf of Carpentaria.

If you are interested in doing something entirely different, join me in early June to travel to Sydney to join Kennedy’s tours for an amazing outback adventure.

Our first days travelling are through the NSW country to Gunnedah, nestled on the banks of the Hawkbury River.

Day three we travel north through Moree and up to Mungindi for lunch.

Mungindi is uniquely situated on both sides of the NSW and Queensland border, divided by the Barwon River. It is the only town in the Southern Hemisphere with the same name in both states. We continue on to Mitchell, the town which marks the gateway to the Queensland outback.

Tourist hotspot

We have a break at Tambo before arriving in Blackall – the home of the original black stump – for lunch at the Barcoo Hotel. In the afternoon, an easy run through to Longreach, one of Queensland’s tourist highlights.

We have a very full day in Longreach, starting with a visit to the famous Stockman’s Hall of Fame. The museum incorporates five themed galleries, which proudly display the history behind some of Australia’s greatest and bravest explorers, stock works, pastoralist and aborigines. We also enjoy the outback Stockman’s Show, before having lunch

at the Cattleman’s bar and grill.

Following lunch, we visit the Qantas Museum – this is where the airline started and this will be a very interesting guided tour. This evening we go cruising on the west’s only paddle steamer. Enjoy an evening drovers meal around a camp fire and be entertained with country music.

Safari-style

Day six, our destination is the cattle and mining town of Cloncurry. We stop at Winton, the home of the of Waltzing Matilda centre, the only tourist attraction that is dedicated to a song. Lunch is at the famous Blue Heeler Hotel at Kynuna, before continuing on with a number of stops to spend the night at Cloncurry.

Now we are getting closer to the Gulf as we make our way through to Lawnhill, our destination for the next two nights. Our accommodation is at Adel’s Grove in safari-style tents, which will be quite an outback experience. This destination is in a National Park and apart from a tour of the world’s heritage Riversleigh fossil fields, there will be plenty of time to relax and take in the scenery or just do your own thing.

Day nine, we travel to Normanton – famous for the Purple Pub, lunch and late afternoon we arrive at Kurumba and the Gulf of Carpentaria. Kurumba is known as the outback by the sea and described by friends as one of the prettiest places in Australia. Our second day on the gulf has us learning all about the fishing industry before joining ‘Croc and Crab tours’ for an evening cruise.

Day 11, we depart the gulf and return

to Normanton to board the famous Gulf Lander train for a journey back in time.

After leaving the train, we travel to Croydon and then on to Undara for the night where our accommodation is beautifully restored railway carriages.

Our final five days on tour take us to Charters Towers for one night with a tour of the town which years ago was known as ‘The World’ – where they still have board walks – before travelling on to spend a night at the mining centre of Emerald. From Emerald we con-

Exchanging historical interests and education U3A Tauranga promotes healthy ageing for the retired and semi-retired, by sharing educational, creative, leisure activities organised by their own members.

A variety of U3A history groups meet twice a month to discuss their particular historical interests.

The ‘British history group’, having studied medieval Britain in the past, is now moving on to the fascinating story of England under the Tudors.

The ‘European history group’ studied France for the last two years and this year is embarking on the much lesser known history of Central Europe.

Another group – the ‘ancient history group’ covers a range of almost 100,000 years from Early Man to the end of the Roman Empire.

The ‘history of New Zealand group – last 1000 years’, research a person or place in New Zealand which has left a significant impact on our country.

This group endeavour to fit in a local field trip of historical interest.

In all groups, the scheme is much the same: Members select a particular topic in the field of study, research it, and then talk about it with the group.

The ensuing discussions are always stimulating, often made more enjoyable by veering off the subject matter.

Volunteering for a valuable friendship Tauranga Age Concern is looking to increase its supply of volunteers for its Accredited Visiting Service.

There are currently 25 older people in the Greerton, Otumoetai, Mount and Papamoa areas waiting for visitors. Service coordinator Andrea Billingsley is specifically seeking volunteers in those areas.

“It’s really about friendship,” says Andrea.

“Although most of the people who volunteer are 65 plus, we also have younger people volunteering as well.

“Older people hoping for a visitor are in the 80 plus age group. What the visitor service does is it pairs the volunteer up with the older person who might be suffering from social isolation and loneliness.

“Having someone come in once a week makes a huge difference for an older person who can often go for weeks on end without seeing anybody.”

It starts off with a chat and a cup of tea for an hour, but as the relationship grows they start to do things like go out into the community, to coffee shops and garden centres says Andrea.

“Some of the feedback I get from my clients is that they forget eventually that this person came through

our service, because they end up becoming really great friends.

“An older person’s life can become quite limited especially when they lose their driver’s licence or are no longer able to walk to the shops because of illness or disability.

“Also, when an older person loses a loved one, they have been used to a community of two and it’s often been years and years since they have had to look outside that relationship for friendships.

“When a visitor comes into those situations, often what has become a very limited life can start to develop again.”

Being part of Age Concern Tauranga means Andrea can assess client’s needs and point them towards other services available in the community, as well as provide valuable advice and information.

Becoming a member of Age Concern Tauranga can open a whole new area of support including; participation in craft, card and walking groups, community education seminars and regular bus trips.

Taxing times for orchardists Kiwifruit orchardists hit by Psa will be able to smooth out income and loss spikes across financial years with the IRD due to announce approval of the use of income equalisation.

Business Results Group Ltd director Trudi Ballantyne, who has been leading meetings between a group of Te Puke accountants and the IRD, says the department’s approval of this method will assist grower cashflow.

Trudi says this is a real issue for the many orchardists who will be having a highly profitable year on paper – from last season’s crop payment and lower orchard management expenses – ahead of a few years of losses.

Under the income equalisation deposit scheme, orchardists can have their incomes over two financial periods ‘equalised’ – by paying the IRD a cheque for one year’s surplus that will be repaid the following

year when the business operates at a loss.

“They usually have to leave the money with IRD for 12 months for it to work, but IRD have within their discretion the ability to release the money early.”

The approval of this approach could potentially mean a grower can write the cheque one week and then have it released the next. The rules around how this will apply to kiwifruit orchardists will be announced soon.

Trudi says IRD’s response to the crisis had been very positive and the department was working through a number of tax issues relating to different scenarios orchardists could face. An example is the impact on asset values and licences from

“They are definitely very helpful and very aware of the problems that are being faced and could certainly see some problems with the tax laws as they are at the moment,” says Trudi.

IRD has committed to making any changes retrospective and will announce any changes around these issues on a dedicated Psa area on its website www.ird.govt.nz Trudi encourages orchardists to keep in touch with their accountants and keep up-to-date with their tax bills.

Plugging into the power of the sun With about 2550 sunlight hours a year, the Western Bay of Plenty is the ideal spot to plug into the sun’s power says Welcome Bay sustainable living advocate Paul Hignett.

A year on since setting up his home-based solar system connected to the national grid, Paul’s monthly power bills have fallen to $15 a month – but he aims to go lower still.

With the call going out for organisations to get involved in the annual Earth Hour event to promote sustainable living, The Weekend Sun spoke to him about his experience.

Earth Hour encourages people to switch off lights for an hour and commit to actions to live more sustainably.

needed to avoid brown-outs (partial, temporary reduction in system voltage) predicted in two years.

“We simply won’t have the generation capacity to handle the growth we’ve got if we don’t.”

With the world’s resources being consumed at a rate 50 per cent faster than can be sustained, Paul argues it is critical everyone changes their behaviour.

Installing a solar water heating system can save up to 40 per cent of a household’s energy requirements. He also recommends putting a system in place so the house’s power is turned off overnight, to save on the typical 0.5 Kwh “ghost load” that appliances such as fridges, freezers, TVs and computers draw.

“Our fastest pay-back is still solar hot water – that’s the thing that we need to really embrace.”

Paul says there has never been a better time to get into solar – with the cost of panels falling from $13/watts four years ago to about $1.50/watt now. In contrast, the price of

The second wettest March was 1972 when 319mm was recorded, and two March months – 1910 and 2010 – recorded only 14mm.

The long-term average rainfall for Tauranga for March is 110 mm.

overall trend in the rainfalls in March during the last 110 years, apart from a small increase in the average rainfall from 103mm in the 50 years ending in 1960, to 117mm in the 50 years to 2010.

This can be compared with the months of January and February during the same 50 years, which both show a small decrease: In January, falls from 86mm to 81mm, and in February from 95mm to 86mm. Since 1898, there have been 11 March months with a rainfall of 200mm or

more – the same as the number of months in February with more than 200mm –and six March months have had rainfall of 20mm or less.

The next Weather Eye on March 9 will discuss weather extremes in New Zealand during the last 150 years, one extreme occurring in Tauranga on April 17, 1948.

Surf lifesaving’s current stars will rub shoulders with the best juniors in the country at this week’s Oceans 12 New Zealand under-14 championships in Mount Maunganui.

The four-day carnival starts on Thursday, with more than 700 athletes from 41 clubs competing.

But the bonus for the juniors, is the chance to watch New Zealand’s top ironmen and women

competing in the final of the Sonic Race Series on Saturday.

Local athletes figure prominently in the 10-strong fields for both races, with Mount Maunganui’s Andrew Newton qualifying in seventh place in the ironman, and Papamoa’s Natalie Peat second in the ironwoman.

Natalie, 17, is set for a notable return to the Oceans arena, where she was unbeaten over five years in the diamond lady race over four age groups.

Kids are encouraged to ‘go wild’ at the carnival for some good old fashioned fun.

City Church Tauranga’s annual Kids Go Wild carnival day is a free family day out, with a fantastic opportunity for great family fun that all can enjoy together, in a safe and friendly environment.

Event coordinator Braden Clark says the church places a high value on free family-fun, adding Kids Go Wild is one of a kind event in Tauranga.

“We are so excited to once again run this fun family event for our community.

“Kids Go Wild has been running annually for 20 years and is always a highlight of our year. “We have more than 100 volunteers involved in making it happen, both on the day and in the leading up to it.”

Activities include fun rides, rock climbing, bouncy slides, candy floss, a bungee tramp, mini jeeps, merry-go-round, a swing boat and much more.

More swimming scholarships Nine more non-swimmers will be safer near the water this summer after receiving Swim For Life scholarships.

Six adults and three children all received scholarships thanks to support from local businesses says Tauranga City Councillor Catherine Stewart.

Catherine began the scholarships a couple of years ago with a business charity auction to start them off. They are intended for people who for one reason or another

missed out on the learning to swim process.

“It is an opportune time to learn to swim and if we can save one life it will be worth it,” says Catherine.

“We are surrounded by ocean and waterways, probably more so than any other city in New Zealand.”

Some dirty fun planned for this weekend This Sunday will mark the third anniversary of Mudslide Day, a national scout event planned in each region of the country.

The Western Bay of Plenty Scout Zone has taken the day to a whole new level, with the help of TECT and several other major sponsors, including Devan Plastics, Western Bay of Plenty District Council and the Bruning Family Farm – where the event is being held this Sunday, February 26.

Since receiving TECT funding in 2010, organisers developed a plan to make the scout event a full obstacle course, involving lots of mud.

“Each year we have had more than 2000 people come on the day and have been self-funded for the last two year,” says event

manager Andy Goodall from Te Puna Scout Group.

“This is a non-profit event with spectators being free and any who do the course, pay $10 for entry, which includes a Mudslide Day badge and a free hot soup or Milo.”

Andy says it’s not just a mudslide – it is a course of exciting challenges for all ages.

“The main mudslide is an 80 metre long, specially-made heavy canvas slide, which cost us several thousand dollars to purchase last year.

“We get a digger in

to make a landing pool about 8Sqm and over a meter deep, then add quite a bit of mud.”

The WBOP Scouts Mudslide Day is at Bruning Farm, Omokoroa Road on Sunday, February 26 from 9.30am to 3.00pm. Entry into the Mudslide is $10.

Look younger and energetic Blepharoplasty is the ultimate procedure to help restore a more energetic and youthful appearance, according to Skin Centre Specialist Dr Paul Salmon.

“Sometimes even after a good night’s sleep, it can be hard to feel vibrant when you see your eyes looking tired,” says Paul.

“The loose skin over your eyes and the fat bags under them make you look more tired and older than you feel inside.”

Eyelid Lift or Blepharoplasty

cannot only correct sagging eyelids, remove fatty pouches beneath the eyes and remove excess skin from the upper eyelids, but it can also correct eyelid problems that may be interfering with your vision.

Excess skin around your eyes can be removed making you look alive and refreshed.

After surgery, the area around the eye may be swollen for about four days and there may be some bruising, especially after lower lid blepharoplasty. Makeup can normally be worn five days after surgery. The resulting hairline scars which follow the natural contour of the eyelids tend to fade in about two months.

Alternatives to anti-inflammatory medications Almost every long-term disease will be either caused or affected by inflammation.

Fortunately, modern medicine has at its disposal a wide array of anti-inflammatory medications; ranging from the humble aspirin to more powerful non-steroid drugs such as brufen and diclofenac, through to the very powerful steroids such as prednisone.

All these medicines and their many derivatives have real benefits and they also have risks. For some, the side effects mean they can no longer be used. Before we look at other options, it is important to understand what we are dealing with. The source of inflammation is our immune system. One of its main roles is to create and release a wide variety of inflammatory chemicals as part of the body’s repair mechanism.

Anti-inflammatory medications temporarily block these inflammatory chemicals and offer significant reduction of inflammation.

There are also many naturally occurring compounds in foods that have anti-inflammatory properties. These properties are very different from those of medicines.

Medications act as a temporary immune system block.

These natural compounds, if included daily from diet and supplements, work in two ways. The journey to improved health and wellbeing is less about the physical attributes of a healthy body and more about less tangible factors like the way you see the world, your perception of your place in that world and the way you think.

more probably also need to laugh more, worry less, have fun and focus on the simple things in life – family, friends, quiet times.

Kevin was a man who epitomised these things. To get to the end of one’s journey in this life and to be able to say that you lived life the way you wanted to and did the things that made you and those around you happy, could be one of the greatest achievements a person could hope for.

If you live your life that way, every day, you are more likely to be happier, have a greater sense of wellbeing and in turn, your health will improve. My education has largely been structured by the western medical model of health care. It has its place, however, my experience has convinced me that the reality is, happiness is health.

out with his mates. In fact, he was often the ‘navigator’ when it came to getting people together, be it fishing, golf, poker games, dinners, a ‘quiet’ drink, anything that involved sharing time with the ones he loved, doing the things that he loved.

Health is not just about how your body feels and acts. It is not just about whether the numbers you get from the doctor are in the correct range. Health is not just about whether you eat enough veges and exercise every day. Health is so much more complex than that.

Kevin knew what health meant. He had not an ounce of malice in him. He loved and was loved by his mates. His whanau came first.

Social events to engage the blind More than 80 Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind members, families and friends recently enjoyed the annual picnic at the Te Puna Quarry Garden Park.

The annual picnic is one of several successful regular social events organised by the RNZFB Tauranga community committee.

Many members, especially the elderly, suffer from social isolation, as it is difficult for them to get out and

about on their own. The community committee is a group of volunteers who organise much needed social activities for Foundation members.

Volunteers play a big role in these activities by raising funds, organising the events and providing essential transport and sighted guides.

Slowing it down concentrates the flavour As the mercury rises, I am sure people slow down. I witnessed this last Sunday at the Mount market.

The heat was drawing most people to any shade and there was no sense of urgency.

This reminded me of places in this world where the pace of life slows right down or even stops. In the very hot countries like Greece, the whole day is broken into two parts as most locals catch a nap in the hottest part of the day. During this time, the Greek mamas start their slow cooking as they have done for centuries.

Right now, world-wide there is a move

towards slow food. In 1986, the slow food movement was founded originally in Italy

by Carlo Petrini to resist the opening of a McDonalds. Originally promoted as an alternative to fast food, now with more than a 100,000 members in 150 countries, it promotes local flavours through regional events, the setting up of seed banks, and strives to preserve traditional and sustainable foods.

It also has a political agenda directed against the globalisation of agricultural products. This is the cornerstone of the thriving food markets where the slow food philosophy is embraced. Some aspects of the Food Bill now before parliament may force smaller

Last week, I shared a recipe about slowly cooked stuffed tomatoes and capsicums. This week we are slow cooking again with zucchini and potatoes.

Spread one layer of potatoes in a medium sized casserole dish, sprinkle with salt and pepper, chopped parsley, a little of the oil, then a layer of the courgettes, a sprinkle of the garlic and some of the chopped tomato and season with more salt and pepper.

Repeat the process until all the courgettes and potatoes are used. Press down firmly, add the rest of tomatoes and oil and one cup of water, cover with foil and bake in oven on 140 degrees for about three hours. Remove foil and brown to set top of briam.

Serve as is straight from the dish, or allow cooling completely then cut up like a lasagne. It also tastes great cold served the next day as part of a summer antipasto.

Serves four to six

Summer is zucchini season Zucchini Parmesan

For you garden lovers, the zucchinis are streaming through, and this has to be one of my favourite dishes. It can also be replaced with egg plant. It’s great as a side dish or even for those nights when you feel like being a vegetarian.

Ingredients 4 x zucchinis, cut length ways, slice thinly Grated parmesan cheese Mozzarella 3 eggs, lightly beaten with 3 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese Flour Light cooking oil Italian Sauce 2 tsp olive oil 1/2 onion, sliced 2 cans of chopped/diced tomatoes 1/2 cup water 2 garlic cloves, diced Fresh basil 1 tsp sugar 1 tsp salt and pepper Method First we need the red sauce – this is an easy sauce which can be used in many dishes. Heat a pot with some olive oil, and sweat off the onion. Place both cans of diced tomatoes and stir in some salt and pepper with a little sugar. Add half

cup of water, garlic and basil and simmer for approximately 40 minutes until sauce reduces.

Place half portion of sauce in an oven dish ready for the next step.

Pre-heat a non-stick pan with cooking oil to fry zucchini – you will need to add extra oil as it soaks it up. Coat each slice of zucchini in flour, dusting off excess. Dip in egg mixture and fry on both sides until golden.

Place on a handy towel to drain excess oil.

Once all the zucchini has been fried, place one layer on the bottom of the oven dish.

On each peace place a slice of mozzarella cheese then add another piece of zucchini to form a lid.

Cover with remaining sauce, sprinkle parmesan cheese on top and place in the oven, covering with tin foil and bake on 180 degrees for 45-60 minutes until soft.

The fruit comes from a selection of moderate fertility vineyards in the Marlboroughs Wairau and Awatere Valleys. The grapes were carefully monitored during maturing to ensure they were harvested at the peak of flavour development and ripeness.

After pressing and cold settling, the resulting clear juice was fermented in stainless steel at cool temperatures to help retain purity of flavour.

Saint Clair Marlborough Premium Pinot Gris is ideal to be enjoyed with lightly spiced Asian curries or creamy mushroom dishes.

32 Help needed to capture escapee

Police are asking for the public’s help to locate escaped prisoner Jamie Paamu Hughes.

Hughes, 29, escaped from Tongariro Rangipo Prison on Tuesday after fleeing in a stolen Department of Corrections van. Police discovered the van abandoned in Taupo a few hours later.

Hughes is described as a male Maori of slight build, 170cm tall and believed to weigh around 60kg.

He has the name ‘Leilani’ tattooed on the right side of his neck and has short dark hair.

Round two for marine precinct Tauranga’s multi-million dollar marine precinct proposal is being given another life after it was rejected by the council this week.

The proposal to establish a business plan and test out regional council funding for the development on Mirrielees Road was brought out of confidential at Monday’s council meeting but failed on a vote.

However, Mayor Stuart Crosby and Councillor Terry Molloy were absent during the vote,

having left the meeting early due to other commitments.

Stuart says the issue will now be revisited when the minutes of Monday’s meeting are presented at a meeting in April.

Stuart says the option presented in Monday’s paper was just one of a number of possible funding options.

He is intending to present more options with more robust business cases around each option.

Youth build Asia and NZ relations

Seventy young people from throughout New Zealand and Asia are meeting in Tauranga to brainstorm ways to strengthen relations between the two nations.

Five years since it was first started, the Asia New Zealand Foundation’s Young Leaders Network Reunion is an opportunity for young people to discuss ways of increasing New Zealand’s understanding of Asia.

Organised by Tauranga based Priority One, Tauranga was chosen to host the reunion as it is a focus point for the Asia New Zealand Foundation.

Priority One’s strategic projects manager, Greg Simmonds says businesses and schools in the Western Bay of Plenty sub-region recognise the increasingly important role Asia plays in New Zealand’s future.

A group of 30 young leaders will visit nine secondary schools around the Bay of Plenty, while others will meet with local businesses wanting to strengthen their operations in Asian markets.

Operations manager Margaret Rawiri says the animal shelter has many adult cats that will make great pets, but which are being overlooked

because few people can look beyond cute kittens.

“There are a lot of advantages in choosing an adult cat – particularly that they are already house-trained,” says Margaret.

She would love to see all her adult cats adopted out this weekend – after some have stayed at the shelter for

more than three months.

“It’s quite sad – there are some lovely cats in there, but unfortunately people tend to overlook them.”

All cats available for adoption have been de-sexed, micro-chipped, vaccinated, treated for fleas, worms and checked to ensure they do not have any injuries or

popular belief, adult cats are quite adaptable to new homes and owners.

Choosing a companion When Annie Hill decided to get more cats she knew there was only one place to go – the Tauranga SPCA. “I have always thought that the SPCA do a great job in looking after and adopting out homeless animals – particularly here in Tauranga where they have a really good operation,” says Annie.

A visit to the SPCA’s Greerton premises last weekend saw her spoilt for choice.

Annie came away with a male and female kitten pair who can play together while she is at work. The kittens replace Annie’s last cat she had for 12 years.

Annie had intended to adopt adult cats, but because she was getting two she opted

“You go in there and you see so many gorgeous animals.

They have been well looked after and are in great condition.”

Pet pals – giving a hand So you want to help Tauranga SPCA’s homeless four-legged friends, but have no space for another pet?

There are plenty of ways animal lovers can make a difference for the homeless pets.

SPCA operations manager Margaret Rawiri appreciates not everyone can offer a longterm home for one of her homeless animals, but says there are many other ways to help.

A simple way to support the SPCA is through a donation of food, money or blan-

kets. The SPCA uses a large amount of tinned pet food every day and donations are taken on-site or in SPCA bins at many supermarkets.

Another option is to volunteer your time to work at the centre and help bring a little more love to the many cats and dogs under the SPCA’s care – with volunteers needing to have a compassionate nature with a willingness to give.

Tauranga SPCA offers different types of volunteer options, from cat and dog care to becoming a member of the Dog Squad – a group of people out and about with

their dogs to help raise money and the profile of the centre.

Those who are able to accommodate an animal can help with short-term foster care for kittens and puppies so they reach the required age, weight or level of health before they can be adopted out.

Wheeling to a close During Bike Wise Month in February 2011, 36,000 New Zealanders experienced the fun and freedom of two wheels at a Bike Wise event.

Tauranga City Aquatics Limited is a Council Controlled Organisation responsible for the City’s network of pools which includes Baywave TECT Aquatic & Leisure Centre, Greerton Aquatic & Leisure Centre, Otumoetai and Memorial Pools and the worldfamous Mount Hot Pools.

Predicting similar numbers this year, Bike Wise for 2012 is coming to a close. The event this year hosted a wide range of 36 great bike-themed events.

Celebrate the two-wheeled mode of transport on Wednesday, February 29 at 5.45pm and join in the finale ride of Bike Wise Month.

All ages are welcome to come along and dress up in Bike Wise colours of blue and orange. There are lots of great prizes to be won and the overall Bike Wise draw to be drawn. The event starts at Historic Village in 17th Avenue.

Many scooter riders are not equipped to meet the modern day demands that our roads and congestion demand according to Bayride Motorcycle’s Kevin Roberts.

The training provider is hosting an ‘improve your scooter skills’ course in conjunction with Tauranga Western Bay of Plenty Road Safety Group and Accident Compensation Corporation for all ages and all riding levels.

Kevin says the course is great to get long-term riders brushing up on their skills and to get new riders away from bad habits.

The instructors will encourage lots of interaction with the scooter riders. Both Kevin, Bayride Motorcycle Training, and Chris Welch, Western Bay Driving are New Zealand Transport Agency, are qualified instructors.

“The proposed sessions will cover topics like general maintenance, safety checks, what to wear, and practical exercises to improve rider skills such as braking and cornering.

“We show tips for riding in the rain, turning on a scooter, using the brakes on a scooter and general riding tips for safe riding on a scooter.

“Above all the training will be fun and we will have spot prizes and possibly a team prize.

“The goal of each training session is that if we can teach each person just one new skill, then it will be worthwhile.”

Kevin says the relationship between Bayride Motorcycles and ACC resides on the “overrid-

More misinformation on warming myth Observations from sea ice and pole Interesting to note yet another letter of misinformation from Peter Otway relating to the myth of global warming (Letters, 17 Feb).

As Peter said in his presentation last year, he is not a scientist, he is simply reporting what scientists say. As a non-scientist, I suppose he can be excused for failing to realise that science is not dependent on consensus.

If it were we would still believe that the earth was the centre of the universe and was also flat. These were consensus beliefs until a few hundred years ago, when a

very small number of scientists disproved them despite huge opposition from the establishment. Little, if anything, has changed.

The science behind the global warming myth is based on the frequently incorrect analysis of non-representative data combined with the fraudulent production of the infamous ‘hockey stick’ graph, a scientific fraud exceeding that of the Piltdown Man early last century.

Based on this ‘evidence’, the preposterously arrogant myth has been proposed that we are causing global warming by releasing CO2, a highly undesirable ‘greenhouse’ gas which must be kept at low levels or the earth will overheat (even though water vapour is a far more effective greeenhouse gas than carbon dioxide). In fact the 375ppm concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide is one of the lowest there has ever been - it has been at least 25 times as high in the past without significant temperature change. If it goes much lower plant growth will cease, then we will have problems.

The 10,000 active volcanoes worldwide, most of them submarine, put out far more CO2 per week than humans have ever produced. And global temperatures have no relationship to CO2 concentrations anyway; they correlate well with solar heat output and solar flares, over which we have absolutely no control.

We are currently at the end of an interglacial period that has lasted for 15,000 years, approximately 50% longer than previous average interglacials. At this point in the past four interglacials (and probably for the other >20 that have occurred in the past few million years) the temperature has dropped rapidly - over years or decades, not centuries - sending the earth into a glacial period lasting about 80,000 years. During the last glacial period, with an average temperature drop of around 5 deg C, the sea level dropped 100m or more due to the accumulation of glacial ice on land.

May I ask Peter Otway, when was the last time he was on the Arctic Sea Ice, or at the North Pole?

Son Phil has been escorting three trips a year to the North Pole for the past eight years. Last years Northern summer, which is when they travel, the Skipper of the Nuclear Powered Ice Breaker commented to him, the ice build-up seems to be getting heavier each year.

I know Peter he’s just a Russian Captain, not a scientist, just a man who makes his living, observing and working with such phenomena and didn’t just read about it somewhere.

May I also add that Phil also travels to Antarctica and hasn’t noticed any discernable ice loss in the Weddell Sea area either, just another unscientific observation I suppose.

I do not wish to start another aimless round of Climate Change arguments, these comments are just observations that have been passed on to me, but I have observed that the colder summer we are experiencing, has ruined my tomato production this year, not very scientific either.

Free parking would help the CBD We would like to congratulate Hamish Carter on an excellent article in Friday 17ths publication.

The first action needed is for the council to give the CBD free three hour monitored parking seven days a week.

The council has done every other thing imaginable since the early eighties to try and stop the decline of customers to the CBD but have never tried free parking as is available elsewhere. How many times has the City centre been reinvented, how many times has the Waterfront been updated? How much money has been spent on marketing?

All to bring in more customers to the city, but to no avail. How much money has been wasted? The new waterfront upgrade is all about having areas to run markets and shops in competition to the existing businesses in the city. Is this going to stop closures? Of course not, it will just divide the same number of dollars into more business’s, and speed up the process. It appears the council doesn’t expect any increase in custom-

ers because they are removing the best parking from the City and not replacing it. The Council has to stop spending millions on the waterfront and start spending it on the very tired appearance of the CBD. A little paint would help at very little cost.

We always understood that Mainstreet was an independent organisation from Council but we have found out the hard way this is not the case. They take directions from Priority One which is another council controlled organisation so the businesses have no say in how the CBD should be run.

The second area where the CBD can help it self is by every business involved in retail to open seven days a week. This and the free parking will put us all on a level playing field and the rest is up to the business’s to give their customers a reason to come back to the CBD. If the Council feels that these comments are untrue no doubt they will respond with the facts as they see them.

Hairy hero in league with Humpty When we were kids growing up in Tauranga Moana our hikoi down to Memorial Park to play with Humpty Dumpty was a highlight.

Sometimes as a special treat we would drive down there on a Friday night in our trusty rusty Mark 1, hands clasped around an Adams Bruce ice-cream, and watch the pretty fountain change colours. It was magic.

How cool that today’s tamariki will be able to do the same down on the

Strand when the Hairy Hounds come to town. Lynley Dodds from Tauranga has created a library of legends and they are ours as locals to celebrate.

The council is to be commended on such an innovative toanga for our tamariki - both big and small to enjoy. It will be an instant attraction just as Humpty Dumpty was for us many moons ago.

Cool on warming theory I could develop a theory that the world is cooling.

If my theory includes evidence of the record lows recorded in parts of the world and adds that this will also lead to record highs in some areas then no matter what happens my ‘cooling world’ theory has been proved. Such are the tactics of the ‘Global Warming’ brigade.

There is little doubt that the world is warming, but to claim that 98% of scientists believe this is due to increased CO2 is untrue. The world has had periods with massively higher CO2 levels than today but with lower, similar and higher temperatures. Less than 1000 years ago it was warmer with much lower CO2. It is clear that current CO2 levels are increasing but no one really understands where this will lead.

Given that even the most rabid Warmers acknowledge that the overwhelming majority of CO2 production is natural, the real issue appears to be the loss of the earth’s ability to reabsorb it. The most likely reason is the destruction of forests. The UN carbon credit scheme will do nothing to genuinely create greater CO2 absorption. It is a rort by an alliance of corporates and socialists. I would suggest this is what most people are concerned about.

Any one who can read will have already seen the admission by the warmists that in fact there has been no increase in temperatures as predicted by these sooth sayers - the seas have not risen and flooded huge areas of land - the ice has not receded as promised in fact the latest peer review study shows that the ice on hitherto thought balding mountains has in fact thickened despite their dire predictions - Peter if you can come up with just one bit of proof that mankind is warming our planet then and only then should you go into print or even open your mouth!

The completed set of statues will certainly be an attraction just like “Mountie� the surfer, on the deck of the Mainstreet Office Downtown the Mount. He has become one of the most photographed images at the Mount.

The Mount could have had another six statues featuring attractions of the Mount (promoted by Mount Rotary to recognise 100 years of Rotary) if the hurdles put by council, such as “they would be a distraction to traffic�’ “not permitted on reserve land�, and the killer blow, “nothing in the District Plan that allows statues�, could have been jumped. Only through the persistence of Mount Mainstreet did “Mountie� eventually become a reality.

The seven statues were to be created by Donald Paterson, once referred to by Creative Tauranga as a “rent-a-sculptor�, even though his creation of “Barry� in Katikati, and the child statues in Waihi are icons in their own right.

Oh ... by the way, the total cost of the Rotary project was $250,000 with no Council funding. The cost of “Mountie� to Mainstreet the Mount was $35,000.

How inflation has impacted. $800,000 for Hairy Maclary and his mates? Yeah Right! Hope a plentiful supply of pooper scoopers are included in the cost.

Re an item on TV this morning about serious incident in Hospitals one has to ask why is it OK for a DHB to have an accidental death yet let’s say a builder or engineering company has an accidental death, they are ripped apart by Health and Safely and fined horrendous amounts of money and can face imprisonment yet a DHB death seems to be OK. This is not a criticism it is simply me wondering what the difference is.

Roll out the tatty red carpet It’s Oscar time again! And all I can say this year is that the Oscars are rubbish.

I dunno what it is about the Academy. Every year they try and retool the event to attract bigger viewing numbers for the ceremony, and every year they make it worse and worse.

A couple of years ago they increased the number of films nominated. That came after a year when a whole lot of ‘smaller’ and British films were finalists. One even had subtitles.

Since (apparently) Americans don’t go and see such films it was assumed this so-called ‘elitism’ was wrecking the awards – people simply hadn’t heard of the films so they didn’t watch.

And they changed the format.

Now there are a whole pile of films so that there will be some ‘popular’ ones that ‘everyone’ has heard of.

And now – like some hapless reality show – presenters stand and embarrassingly recount to acting nominees just what wonderful people they are.

It was pretty awful when Anne Hathaway and a (quite possibly stoned) James Franco did it last year. The numbers went down again.

This year even the presenter bailed. The guy producing the show, estimable film director Brett Ratner, got fired for alleged gay slurs.

So this year it’s back to the future – Billy Crystal has been disinterred: everybody party like it’s 1999.

Usually I spend the column before the Oscars – which, by the way, are live on telly on Monday afternoon – predicting who will walk away with the little gold fellas, but this year I have few sensible predictions. The Artist, The Descendants, Hugo or Moneyball should win best picture. Because, of the nine films, they’re the only ones that should have been nominated and I don’t think even Hugo or The Artist are Best Picture material, despite the fact that I enjoyed them both immensely.

But the big money was spent promoting The Artist and it will probably take the award along with that for Best Actor, which is kinda criminal. Best Actor?

Pitt and Clooney are both superb in their respective films (as is Gary Oldman in his supremely controlled turn in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy). But where is Michael

Fassbender for Shame? I’ve seen a host of other performances in ‘small’ movies that stand alongside those and weren’t considered.

For that matter, why aren’t TTSS and Shame up for the best film award when you have such mediocrity as War Horse, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and The Help? Even Woody Allen’s latest, Midnight In Paris, frothy fun though it is, is hardly Oscar material. Like Scorsese’s Hugo it would barely count in the director’s top five films.

In the women’s category, it’s hardly worth predicting since everyone is likely to be disappointed if their name isn’t Meryl. Another great performance in another tragically average film. Nice to see Rooney Mara nominated for her brave transformation in Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (but why was that not a Best Picture nominee?). The great Tilda Swinton was robbed, with no nomination for her role in We Have To Talk About Kevin.

There is silliness and inequity pretty much wherever you look.

What the hell happened to the animated films? Tintin didn’t get an Oscar nod? Cars 2 didn’t

get a nod? But Kung Fu Panda 2 and Puss in Boots did?

Has the Academy gone completely crazy?

In the documentary category there is no Senna, no Cave of Forgotten Dreams. But there’s Undefeated, a cringe-worthy hagiography made to praise and flatter Sarah Palin. Is it just there so attendees have something to laugh about on the night (Billy Crystal notwithstanding)?

And the songs… There are only two songs nominated.

Since one is by Bret McKenzie that’s good news for the New Zealand contingent. But seriously… two songs? It seems voters give the entrants a score of one to 10. To get a nomination you need to score an average of 8.5.

If only one song gets 8.5 then the next highest gets in as well. So they thought there was only one (or possibly two) songs good enough in the whole year? A pity that logic wasn’t applied to the ‘best’ films.

ELITE SQUAD: THE ENEMY WITHIN Dir: Jose Padilha. Starring: Wagner Moura, Irandhir Santos, Andre Ramiro Nascimento, initially head of BOPA, the ‘elite squad’ of the title. But a prison riot goes dangerously out of control on his watch and he finds himself shunted sideways up the chain of command, behind a desk and in charge of surveillance. From this position he begins to see how the entire system, from politicians down to the militias and gangs, is entwined and corrupted. His attempts to combat this are – predictably – unpopular.

This is great stuff – exciting, tense, colourful, and smart, made with cool style and intelligence. There aren’t many sequels that surpass the original but Elite Squad: The Enemy Within is a rare exception.

After his ground-breaking documentary Bus 174, director Padilha made Elite Squad, a rough violent Rio-set actioner that exposed corruption within the police fighting gangs and drugs in the favellas. This time he takes on the entire system and the results are riveting.

It doesn’t matter that this is a sequel – you don’t need to have seen the first film first, but I’d recommend it, because Elite Squad was fast, flashy and furious, the best slice of Brazilian action since City of God. This is even better: the characters are deeper and more resonant, the plot more complex and layered, and the filmmaking even more confident.

Ed Harris the atheist writer who debates him, and Greg Kinnear the newly-converted deadhead who witnesses an accidental crime and finds himself on the run from church henchmen. The film is intermittently smart and funny, but too loose and inconsistent to really hit home, too often playing things safe. And while Jennifer Connolly gets a nice turn, it wastes Marisa Tomei, which is just criminal.

The new ‘super-star makeover party’ has seen pre-teens lining up for their photo shoot having had hair, make-up and styling attended to – delivering on another big fantasy for most girls – to be a model, if only for a few hours.

Frustrated at limited party options available for her boys, Sammy is also expanding to include boy’s events for 3-13 year olds.

“It’s all about fulfilling fantasies here at the Fairy House, so starting this month you can also let your mini-men loose on the army obstacle course, water slides or the ‘Fear Factor’ stunts.”

Acoustic music feast Aspiring and established musicians from across the Western Bay get a taste of the big-time tomorrow when they play alongside international acts at the Tauranga-Katikati Acoustic Music Festival.

The festival is being run for its second year at a farm in Aongatete. It features a range of the region’s musical talent, from blues and jazz influenced groups, through to folk, classical and a little pop.

The day begins with a blackboard concert from 10am when the first musicians to get their name on a blackboard get a chance to perform up to three songs to the assembling crowd.

Festival co-organiser Sheryl Bond says the blackboard concert was a great way for upcoming musicians to play to a bigger crowd.

Following the blackboard concert, there is a series of performances by local acts, including Paul and Penny, Waterford, Fitch and Ramus, Picking Daisies, Peter and Jacquie, SparX Unplugged, Paul Lethbridge and violinist Rebecca Whalley.

“It promises to be a great event,” says Sheryl.

“We’ve got a top line up of acts and if it rains it will be held in the Katikati Memorial Hall.”

Among the local musicians involved is

Katikati College Year 13 student and accomplished violinist Rebecca Whalley, who is performing a series of classical pieces on her traditional violin, then a pop repertoire on an electric violin.

Rebecca, 17, has been playing violin since she was six and is a member of the Bay of Plenty Symphonia Orchestra. Last year she won the Bay of Plenty Registered Music Teachers Scholarship.

Rebecca describes herself as passionate about music and would love to become a professional musician, but has a back-up plan of combining music with law when she goes to university next year.

International headline acts are Emily Smith with Jamie MacLennan and acoustic trio Sanders Alley Khan – Jon Sanders, Dave Alley and Dave Khan. The concert is expected to attract an audience of 400. For more details visit www.taurangaacousticmusic.com

heart of God. We were once known as a land of milk and honey so great was the Father’s love to New Zealand. As we lay our head upon His breast we will hear His voice calling us to examine our hearts and ponder our past. Questions such as, what is our Kiwi DNA? Our destiny and why we exist as a nation? What is our birth right?

Let us not be like Esau the first born of Isaac, twin of Jacob. He sold Jacob his birth right and lost his blessing.

One pot of stew and he released the promises from his life and for the generations to come.

Genesis 25v32: “What good is the birth right to me?” Esau said. He made ungodly alignments and his descendants were eventually obliterated. Esau despised his birth right.

In so doing he proved himself to be

“godless” (Hebrews 12v16 ), since at the heart of the birth right were the covenant promises that Isaac had inherited from Abraham .

Let the clear clarion sound of the Heavenly Father’s voice be echoed over Aotearoa.

“Come away with me. It’s never too late as I have a plan for you. It’s going to be wild and it’s going be great because it’s going be full of me. Just open your heart and let me in.”

In doing so, you will hear the voice of the one who gave His one and only son to die for you on a cross and shed His blood for our nation to be free.

The Father’s arms are waiting for a nation to turn back to His embrace and take a hold of His promises once again. To gaze at the beauty of the Lord and proclaim, “God defend our free land”.

The blessing of God’s love In today’s modern society, we have a false impression of what love really is. It comes in many shades and intensities.

There’s the love of a mother for her child. There’s the love of a friend.

There’s the love of possessions. There’s love between a man and a woman, which has been so misinterpreted that nobody now seems to know what it means any more.

We have been so indoctrinated by the ‘Hollywood’ culture that many divorces are motivated by the disappointment that both men and women feel when they discover that the Hollywood-type of love is a myth. There is one type of love that is no myth, however and that’s the love of God. This is a love which transcends all other types of love. It’s the most unconditional love that we can ever find.

It’s a universal love, in that, no one is excluded. God may not love what we do or how we live our lives, but He still loves us.

One of the most remembered verses in the bible is John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only son, that whoever believes in Him and places their trust in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life”. God sent His son to die an excruciating death on a cross to pay the penalty for our sin, and mankind had never experienced a greater love than that.

How do we experience this awesome love? By confessing our sin and accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. It’s as simple as that!

It’s only then that, somewhere deep within us, we come to realise that we are loved. It’s a supernatural feeling which is hard to explain to someone who has rejected the Christian faith, and yet, when one accepts it by faith, there comes a deep assurance of its reality. Once we experience that love, all other forms of love become much more understandable and real. Brotherly love, a mother’s love and the love for one’s wife or husband takes on a new meaning. Mixed with the love we experience from God, we forgive more easily. We are much more tolerant of each other’s failings and our love becomes influenced by the same kind of love with which God loves us.

A little fishy in my dishy The Swamp Thing: Vicki looks on while the scourge of the fish pond strikes again.

Well Flo, what can I say – your pond manners are suspect to say the least, as the rather restrained “oh no” comment from the pond lady will attest to as she arrived at No.1 The Strand, to find a six-month-old Labrador rearranging her pond-scaping.

I would have used far stronger vernacular, but an act of discretion on my part was more advisable, and so I kept well clear of the carnage that was about to ensue.

Vicki Kazim has been trying for several months now to clean up the big water bowl in the courtyard and has been establishing the pond plants, so it looks like a wonderfully laid out pond.

But upon her arrival this week, she was greeted by a “swamp thing” in her pond, which was now totally bereft of plants and any sort of order – and had some pretty traumatised fish.

The poor swimming things are so shocked after being relentlessly pursued by Flo, that a session on a fish shrink’s water bed must be on the agenda, or an option of union intervention, after the demand of hard hats.

Vicki is no match for an enthusiastic

Labrador, who in the heat, insists on laying in the water bowl, chasing the fish and uprooting anything less than a boulder.

Intervention is required and I do not know if uncle will be ringing the new TCC pool directors or getting an electric fence installed – possibly not a good idea around water – but either way, Flo is in for a shock, so to speak.

As for me, well I am keeping a low profile and leaving the troublemaking to the youngster. My concentration is firmly focussed on birds, not fish, and with the shooting season fast approaching, the boss, uncle, myself and the ‘swamp thing’ have been doing a little pre-planning, with boats, guns, decoys, all being cleaned and prepared.
