Don’t shoot the messengers It can be tough to type in cuffs. They jangle - which is annoying - and can even bruise.

See, there is a difference between what we write and what we see. The truth as you receive it is filtered, more than once, apparently for your benefit, whether you, or us, like it or not. Nanny State knows best, apparently.

Rex Leverett John Prole stood, crouched, gesticulated and gestured in Tauranga District Court on Monday – accused of murder.

The 64-year-old builder was there because he was charged with causing the death of his wife, 57-year-old Robyn Prole, also known as Robyn Phipps, who was found stabbed to death in the driveway of a Bell Street property on July 20.

We were there, in the form of a first year journalism graduate and a photographer, whose presence had been permitted due to significant “public interest”.

Our chief reporter asked that journalist to send a report about what she saw that day.

It went: “Prole’s lawyer debated with the judge about why we shouldn’t be allowed to take photos because his mental health is still in question, but the judge allowed it due to heightened public interest in the case.

“As soon as we’re given the ‘yes’, Bruce and another media photographer started snapping immediately. As soon as Prole realised what was going on he crouched down and hid behind the dock. The judge told him he had to stand up, but he was refusing.

“And yet, if we print something that is untrue we get the court coming down on us like a ton of bricks. Paint enough of a picture?”

Prole’s lawyer stated he was not satisfied with the current psychiatric report, saying it failed to ascertain whether Prole is fit to enter a plea or stand trial.

In that day’s end, the judge agreed to a second psychiatric assessment for Prole due to the serious nature of the charge.

Prole was remanded in custody to reappear on September 3.

Make up your own mind about

whether we should have taken that photograph – or whether we should have been allowed to.

We’re faced with those calls hourly.

From matters, such as style and grammar, to making sure never to express a two-car collision, in which blame is yet to be asserted, in terms of one car colliding with another.

Kick-off should only used in a literal context; it is impossible to have something “at the weekend.” Then there’s the deeper issues, like should we really print photos after a murder in which neighbours are seen talking to police?

And then there’s Phil Rudd’s (closed) restaurant, which we have being trying to touch, but have failed, so will not.

All the time, the dwindling group in an emptying building across town is rewriting our stories and peddling them as their own wares.

Which, if you’re counting at home, equates to replicating information, giving it away for free online, then trying to get people to buy it for $1.40 the following day.

How long can that last?

Our guess, as long as there’s a few folk out there silly enough to pay for old news that they could get free, sooner, from SunLive.

Huge job cuts in the major Australian-owned media companies that dot this land are testimony to the fact that paying for information is done, unless, you know, you’re bribing someone, or paying someone to tape another person’s private conversation. Then it’s fine.

Then there’s the stories we’d like to write but can’t for many reasons. Perhaps the strangest part is when we only report part of what we see and know.

Never is that so true than when we report on suicides. Which basically, we can’t. Check out the media’s standard practice in reporting suicides in next week’s Rogers Rabbits.

The entire atmosphere was super-awkward and uncomfortable and we were made to feel like the bad guy while the person up for murder looks like he’s the one being taken advantage of.

“While all this was going on, I was desperately trying to scribble down everything that was happening in my inadequate shorthand because we can’t take a recorder into court.

Bus bite dog awaiting fate A pit bull-cross dog that hospitalised a bus supervisor may have to wait some time for its eventual fate to be determined.

A 61-year-old Bayline Coaches supervisor was bitten while trying to protect children on a school bus in Windermere on Monday.

The bus was picking up students from a bus stop on Windermere Drive when the dog approached the bus and attempted to get on with the school children.

The bus driver phoned his supervisor for help, who was attempting to lead the dog away from the bus when he was bitten on his right leg below the knee.

He spent two days in hospital.

“We have the dog in the pound and have located and contacted the dog’s owner,” says council animal services team leader Brent Lincoln.

Officials were waiting to speak to the person who was bitten before deciding the dog’s fate.

“There are only three conditions where we can put it down. One is where the owner surrenders the

dog to us, the other is where we can prosecute and the court makes a destruction order, and thirdly if nobody claims a dog after seven days the dog can be put down.”

The only time officials are empowered to act is if they are present at the time of the attack and for the purposes of stopping the attack.

Once it’s in the pound, the council is bound by the Dog Control Act. It’s the second time a bus has been approached by a dog at Windermere, says Bayline Coaches manager Jeanette Proctor.

A dog jumped onto the bus a couple of weeks ago when the driver opened the door to let the children on. It was aggressive, but was coaxed off the bus with food.

A witness told SunLive that at another time the dog jumped into a car parked near the bus stop when the driver didn’t open the bus door. The woman driver got the children out of her car, shut it in and called animal control.

Murder investigation Police are calling for information from the public to help them solve the 1976 murder of Bay of Plenty man Howard Percy.

A team of investigators are continuing to comb through old evidence to try and identify Howard’s killer.

The security guard was shot dead during a bank robbery 36 years ago.

He had just purchased a farm in Bethlehem before he died.

Howard, 65, was shot twice while attempting to stop an armed man during the robbery of the ANZ bank on Old Taupo Road in Rotorua in 1976.

The offender was never caught.

Police re-opened the case last month with hope new scientific methods will help locate the gunman.

“It’s great. The police have never given up on this case.

“It happened on Guy Fawkes so every Guy Fawkes it’s brought to the surface again. It hurts.”

Ross had the following to say to the person who killed his father.

“Keep looking over your shoulder; the police are coming to get you.”

Ross says his father owned a successful engineering business in Hastings before selling up and moving to Bethlehem, where he purchased a farm.

He was also a very active sportsman and took the security job because he was bored and wanted something to do, says Ross.

Email scam warning Bay of Plenty residents are warned about another email scam circulating the internet.

The New Zealand Bankers’ Association is urging people to be on guard against an email scam which asks people to verify their account.

The association says the email appears to come from a New Zealand Bankers’ Association email address: nzba@ nzba.org.nz A release issued by the association says the scam emails include a subject line: “We are necessitat-

ing a verification process on all account(s).”

People who receive such an email or anything similar are being advised to delete it immediately and not to click on any links within the email or disclose personal information.

“This scam was relatively easy to spot because the Bankers’ Association is not a bank, and would never ask people about their bank accounts,” says New Zealand Bankers’ chief executive Kirk Hope.

“People are reminded to safeguard information relating to their bank accounts, and never to disclose their PIN numbers or account passwords to anyone. I would like to emphasise that the New Zealand Bankers’ Association, and its member banks, will never ask a customer to disclose their PIN number or account password.”

Police Safety Orders are proving a valuable tool with the number issued in the Western Bay of Plenty staying steady and the number breached remaining low.

In June, police issued 35 safety orders, compared to 23 in January.

The number of orders issued did spike in February, with 48 being handed out.

A total of 35 were issued in March, 25 in April and 35 in May. Western Bay of Plenty area commander, inspector Clifford Paxton, says since July 2010 police have been able to issue Police Safety Orders.

“The orders are an option for police attending family violence incidents where there is insufficient evidence of an offence but action is necessary to ensure the safety of the people.

“Police are able to order a person out of the premises, effective immediately, for a period of up to five days.”

While the number of orders issued may seem high, the average number of breaches is much lower, with one breach in January and March, two in April and May and three in June.

Five of the 48 orders issued in February were breached the same month.

“The orders are a tool available to police to help ensure the safety of family violence victims through removal of the other party where there is insufficient evidence of an offence being committed,” says Clifford.

“Removal of the other party ensures a cooling off period and enables victims time to make future decisions and gain further assistance where necessary.”

Passing on hockey genes

Despite being a former hockey Olympian, even Sue Furmage has had to face the humbling moment of defeat by her children.

After a long-standing threat she will give up the game if ever beaten by her four daughters, Sue had to eat humble pie recently when her Mount Maunganui Club ‘Striker’s’ team was beaten by her daughters’ Bethlehem College 1st XI team.

Next week she will have a chance to even the score.

“Fortunately they didn’t make it too hard on me. I used to say I would have to give up the game

when they beat me – but they haven’t made me.”

It is a good thing too. Sue, who played at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, is a champion of hockey in the Bay – encouraging and supporting many young players to go on to success on the field, including her daughters. Along with promoting the game at schools for Tauranga Hockey and helping run the small sticks programme for Year 1-2 players, she is also the college’s assistant coach.

“I don’t think I’ve coerced them too much. They all really enjoy it.”

First introduced to a hockey stick at age four, the girls have all gone on to play for Tauranga age group teams.

They and their teammates are train-

ing hard for the Marie Fry Trophy tournament in Whangarei from September 3 where they will compete against second-tier secondary school teams for the first time.

Sue says the girls have also been motivated by following the Black Sticks play in London at the Olympic Games.

“It’s definitely very encouraging for everyone in hockey and it was a bit more special for me after my involvement with national coaching.”

Sue, who played for the Black Sticks from 1986-1993, personally knew nearly all the London team after a total five years coaching the national age group teams.

Batteries charge young minds A school unit dealing with reducing waste has spurred Matua School pupils into charging ahead with a campaign to increase the awareness around the recycling of batteries.

Room 10, comprised of Year 3/4 pupils, greeted Kim Edwards from Zero Waste Education recently, and learnt batteries that go into general rubbish end up in landfills, where they eventually leak their dangerous acid.

That acid, in turn, can burn through the plastic lining of the landfill and contaminate soil.

The class wondered how many batteries its members collectively had at home, then dispatched those members to find out.

The average was a startling 66 per household, which equates to about 1700 per class and more than 32,000 for the entire school, not counting replacements.

The children, wondering if batteries could be recycled, then begun a series of phone calls.

and sent them to Auckland.

The children found the batteries then get sent overseas to be recycled; the lead melted down to be reused, the plastic recycled and the acid neutralised.

The pupils then created posters and slideshows to educate the school’s other children and two of their number also wrote

to Tauranga City Council and Environment Green Bins to ask if stickers could be added to wheelie bins and a notice put in the paper to let people know about their options.

The school now has a collection point for batteries in its hall foyer, which is delivered to CMA Recycling whenever it’s full.

The 2003 Mercedes-Benz E200 Kompressor salvaged from the Rena wreck looks like a million dollars but charity auction organiser Delwynne Hahunga says they will accept a lot less.

The car, now worth $15,000, is being auctioned to raise money for Child Cancer, went live on TradeMe last Friday and at the time The Weekend Sun went to print had a top bid of $11,700.

in the BOP Delwynne Hahunga says they are hoping to get at least $15,000 for the car as that is what similar models sell for on TradeMe. The car has been generously gifted to the Child Cancer Foundation by Vero Marine Insurance and environmental specialists Braemar Howells.

The car was in a container on route to Sri Lanka when the ship struck the reef on October 5 last year. It remained high and dry on the bow of the ship.

It has been completely checked out by Tauranga Vehicle Certifiers and meets New Zealand Safety Standards.

There was minor body damage to the car, which has been repaired by Mount Maunganui Collision Repairs Ltd. Ingham-Sears, the Bay of Plenty’s Mercedes specialists, has provided replacement parts including the Mercedes hood and boot ornaments, and professionally groomed the car for sale.

The TradeMe auction had attracted 15 bids since it went live, with one of the salvors commenting on the auction.

“It’s great to see this car again. I was a member of the Kiwi rigging crew who removed this car from the ship.

“I can vouch for the fact it was not damaged, and that it never came into contact with any seawater. The container was sound when we cracked it open, and we lifted it out of the hold without a scratch using the chopper.

The only scratches on it were from the cardboard boxes of belongings that were packed all around it…”

The car can be inspected and taken for a test drive at Safeway Auto Auctions on Totara Street, Mount Maunganui.

The auction closes on Friday, August 31.

“The games are a good way to get people with disabilities into the sport. I play all the time at the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Hall on Wednesday and Friday nights and sometimes at the Matua hall on Tuesday and Thursday,” says Victor.

“The guy I beat in New Caledonia was the guy who beat me in Fiji. He was in an accident and lost use of one arm, so he serves and bats with the one hand. Besides that he is all good. He comes from New Caledonia, so I thought he might have had an advantage.

“My style is awkward, defensive, slow and choppy. All the young guys like to lop and slam the ball and my style doesn’t give them a chance. It really mucks them up.”

Victor now has his sights set on the Arafura Games for abled and disabled players in Darwin next May and then he plans to defend his medals at the Oceania Regional Para Table Tennis Champs in Canberra in November 2013.

The people have spoken on award Creative thinker Tauranga Girls’ College student Melanie Duff has picked up the People’s Choice Award for her innovative self-heating cup – the second honour in the 2012 Young Innovator Awards.

Melanie’s latest award comes after her product design got the most votes from the public from 19 entries displayed at Bayfair Shopping Centre during the past fortnight. Melanie, 16, won $600 in Bayfair

vouchers for the People’s Choice Award – which was offered for the first time this year.

Earlier this month Melanie received the senior supreme award, while Mount Maunganui College Year 10 student Aidan Winch won the junior supreme award. Aidan had designed an asthma inhaler which records use on a memory card.

The awards are an initiative of Priority One’s Instep programme and aim to encourage young people to develop skills which will enable them to think outside the square to become true creative innovators.

Helping migrants settle in NZ

Steamers unite against bullying

Free clinics assisting new migrants with assimilating into New Zealand society will continue throughout the outer reaches of the Western Bay of Plenty in the coming months.

The Omokoroa clinics will be held at the Omokoroa Library and Service Centre from 1.30-3pm on September 5 and 19, and October 3, 17, 31.

The Katikati clinics will run from

10.30am-12.30pm at the Katikati Resource Centre on September 5 and 19, and October 3, 17, 31.

Te Puke Community Centre will host Te Puke’s clinics from 10.30-12.30pm on August 29, September 12 and 26, and October 10 and 24. Papamoa’s clinics will be held at the Papamoa Community Centre from 1.30-3pm on September 12 and October 17.

Hundreds of primary and intermediate students from 11 different Western Bay of Plenty schools scored the opportunity to get an inside look at the life of a Steamer at this week’s open day at Baypark.

International award for Maketu photographer

A Bay of Plenty photographer has won second place overall in the 2012 Creative Asia Travel Photographer of the Year Awards held in Hong Kong.

Andy Belcher, who loyal Weekend Sun readers will know contributes regularly to this publication, beat out all but one of the 438 photographers from 47 countries who entered a total of 1730 images for judging.

His image was taken near Lake Okataina in the Rotorua Lakes area, from a motorcycle following model Charlotte Bickley of Mount Maunganui.

He was not aware of his win until notified by the editor of New Zealand’s D-Photo magazine last week, and picks up some ‘very nice camera equipment’ for his efforts.

Andy has won more than 100 photographic awards nationwide - including the Australian Underwater Photographer of the Year competition twice and the British Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, since purchasing his first underwater camera in 1984 as a qualified scuba diving instructor.

He became a professional freelance photographer and photojournalist in 1993, also does weddings and portraits, and holds photographic workshops at his Maketu home.

In August, 2013 he will lead a group of photographers to Vava’u in Tonga to swim with and photograph humpback whales.

Fisheries: three, environment: zero Fishing has been in the news lately.

1) Shameful employment practices on chartered fishing vessels.

2) The decision by government to allow increased fishing pressure on squid, and therefore on the endangered Hookers sea lion (68 ‘allowable’ deaths per year).

3) The arrival in the Tasman Sea of the FV Margiris, a super trawler capable of catastrophic mining of our fisheries.

“We can’t stop the Margiris if it has quota,” say our fisheries officials. Well, they banned it from West Africa, and it contributed to the destruction of the

North Atlantic cod fishery.

Decisions that increase the risk for an endangered species, the mere existence of ships such as the MarBy Ian McLean, spokesperson for the giris, and fisheries Green Party companies that put profit before people. This industry consistently puts short-term gain ahead of sustainable resource use.

Like all of our other fine sporting achievements, when we have wins in the Olympics the whole country gets a huge psychological lift!

I’m just old enough to remember the night in 1964 when Peter Snell brought home double Olympic gold from Japan. Every child relived the glory at school the next day, imagining what a victory like that would be like. Nearly 50 years later, Olympic pride is just as strong, whether it be for the gutsy Kawerau girl, Sarah Walker, fighting the fear and winning silver on her BMX; or the many spectacular efforts of our teams

on the water – rowing, kayak, sailing.

Fortunately we are a nation lucky to experience that winning feeling on a regular basis – the most recent being the big All Blacks versus Wallabies or Waikato Magic versus Melbourne Vixens game.

So a big thanks to all of our athletes who keep the Kiwi sporting spirit alive. We are a nation punching way above our weight and so our successes outweigh our losses. Here’s hoping that trend continues!

Museum trust revving up Accused in court The reconfirmation of the city council’s museum resolutions this week is seen as the necessary step to start seeking funding for the Tauranga museum.

The resolutions confirm the use of council land at Cliff Road, an agreement in principle for the Tauranga Moana Museum Trust to have access to the council-owned Tauranga Heritage Collection to display in the museum – and $100,000 for the resource consent costs associated with the Cliff Road site.

The resolutions assist the trust in approaching potential funders, which is the next stage of the project.

Council will facilitate a workshop in the next two months between the Tauranga Moana Museum Trust, the Elms Foundation and Tangata Whenua to identify commonalities between projects that each organisation is involved in.

The trust will apply for funding for the museum from the Bay of Plenty Regional Council Infrastructure Fund.

The council resolutions are subject to the outcomes of the workshop, council satisfaction with the business case and funding plan, consultation by the museum trust with Cliff Road residents and a suitable lease arrangement for the Cliff Road site.

The man accused of stabbing three people in Te Puke has been remanded in custody following a brief appearance in Tauranga District Court on Monday.

Gurcharan Singh, 35, is facing three counts of wounding with reckless disregard after police found three men with stab wounds at a residential address in Te Puke last month.

The 35-year-old fruit picker was found at another address shortly after and was arrested by police.

Singh was previously denied bail as the judge cited concerns he posed a flight risk.

Singh’s lawyer Olivia Brittain sought to have her client remanded until a pre-committal hearing could take place.

Judge Paul Geoghegan remanded Singh in custody to reappear in Tauranga District Court on September 24.

Defending democracy one vote at a time When you think of defenders of democracy, stoic and often larger than life figures immediately come to mind.

The spectre of Winston Churchill and humble diggers are likely conjured up in the thinking of the historically-minded, while figures like Captain America no doubt take pride of place in the younger generation’s thinking.

The truth is, though, that the real administers of democracy walk among us virtually unknown.

Warwick Lampp, chief returning officer for electionz.com, which is looking after the TECT elections, is one such example.

His company now handles more than 100 public and private elections in New Zealand annually, ranging from local government organisations to member organisations such as Fonterra.

likely handle about 120 elections this year - considerably more than the 80 and 56 respectively undertaken in the past two years.

Warwick puts the increase down to word-of-mouth and online voting, which he believes has the capacity to change the way elections are conducted.

Member elections, such as TECT, already offer online voting as an option as, in theory, they have access to trustworthy databases of email addresses with which to reach voters.

Any member organisations whose elections are run by electionz.com only have a handful of members who do not have access to the internet.

In such cases, members are sent their voting papers in the post.

before local and central government elections follow suit on the internet - possibly as early as 2016.

The legislation to do so currently exists, but the Department of Internal Affairs is yet to fully regulate.

Warwick had already been an in-house returning officer for Papakura and the Central Hawke’s Bay District Councils prior to joining electionz.com.

This was at the time when councils were looking to the market to contract out election services in 2001.

Online voting and high speed scanning of voting papers was developed in 2000 and the business has grown substantially from there, with Kiwis, who Warwick believes aren’t risk adverse, quickly adapting to the new opportunities.

The result is that Australia is about 10 years behind New Zealand in terms of online and postal elections, and contracting out by councils.

Warwick says his company is totally transparent with its vote processing systems audited by Deloitte before each round of council elections.

“In New Zealand we are proven to be a trusted authority in running elections – that’s often not the case elsewhere in the world.”

He raised the United States – where voters in 50 frag-

mented states register their political affiliations before voting – as the opposite example.

“The States are a mess as far as elections – their process is complex with more opportunity for doubt.”

In New Zealand, as shown last in 2011, publicity has the power to influence results, as it did with Winston Peters’ remarkable late run last year.

Warwick says council elections are a slightly different matter due to candidate expenditure limits.

He says the TECT elections, in which Bill Holland, Bruce Cronin and Ken Collings were elected, progressed well, with 15,750 votes cast – a voter return percentage of just below 30%.

The voter database had been meticulously checked following the earlier postponement of the vote due to incorrect details being supplied by TrustPower.

Warwick likes his gig in which “iwi space”, including settlement ratifications and the administering of trusts, makes up about 20% of business.

“It’s an interesting job. What I like is the variety of the people I deal with.

“You never know what’s going to happen next. Unusual and interesting things happen all the time.”

Bell Street murder accused in court A second psychiatric assessment will be carried out to determine the health of the 64-year-old Tauranga builder accused of the murder of his wife in Judea last month.

Rex Leverett John Prole appeared in Tauranga District Court this week where Judge Paul Geoghegan remanded him in custody pending the results of a psychiatric assessment.

Prole is charged with the murder of 57-year-old Robyn Prole, also

known as Robyn Phipps, whose body was found lying on the driveway of a Bell Street property on July 20. A post-mortem result showed Robyn died of stab wounds.

Prole’s lawyer Glenn Dixon opposed a media request to take an in-court photograph of his client, arguing Prole’s mental health was still in question, but the request was granted due to public interest.

City celebrates Bay Olympians Bay of Plenty Olympians were the centre of attention as hundreds of fans lined Devonport Road to celebrate the athletes’ efforts at the London 2012 Olympics this week. Silver medallists Peter Burling, Blair Tuke and Luuka Jones led the parade down Devonport Road perched on the back seat of a red Mustang convertible supplied by the Mustang Club. Jason Saunders, Kurt Pickard and Andrew Murdoch also attended – smiling and waving at fans.

The parade culminated at Edgewater Fan at 12pm on Wednesday where Mayor Stuart Crosby introduced the athletes to the waiting crowd.

Second suspicious house fire Tauranga Police are investigating a second suspicious house fire that destroyed an empty house in Tauriko. The fire destroyed the house in The Lakes subdivision near the intersection of Kennedy Road and the Pyes Pa bypass.

An 88-year-old man was injured when the car he was driving flipped onto its roof on State Highway 2 near Katikati this week. Emergency services were called to the crash just after 11.30am outside

Prison guard to drug smuggler Former Te Puke prison officer Kokiri Kihirini Junior Ronaki has been sentenced to two and a half years in jail for supplying Waikeria Prison inmates with drugs. The 43-year-old was sentenced in the Hamilton District Court on Tuesday after earlier pleading guilty to the charges of possession of methamphetamine for supply, possession of cannabis for sale and possession of a glass pipe at his trial in June.

Ronaki was searched by his former colleagues when he turned up for work at Waikeria Prison on July 13 last year.

He was found with enough methamphetamine in his bag to make 13 point bags and the equivalent of four “tinnies” of cannabis, and a glass pipe.

Police believe the cause of the fire is suspicious. Last week another suspicious fire ripped through a two-storey house in the rural area of Ohauiti Road, completely destroying the house.

After two years playing for Tauranga City in the national women’s third division league, she got the call-up at the start of the season in July to join the Rotorua Lady Volcanoes team for its debut season in the top competition.

This week Makayla, 16 and captain of Tauranga Girls’ College Senior A team, is determined to go further still. On Wednesday she joined her Rotorua teammates to fly to the WBC finals tournament in Dunedin. Also on the plane was her girls’ college coach and personal supporter Mel Bennett – who flew down to the champs to coach the Otago team.

Mel, who has also coached Makayla over the years in various age-group rep teams, is picking she will go on to the big time.

“I have huge belief in her. I think she will be in States and she will have a career in basketball. For a 16-yearold I think she has been absolutely amazing.”

Mel has been leading a group of Tauranga basketball coaches and officials who have thrown their energy into helping Makayla achieve her potential, including Tane Bennett who has been helping her with her guard skills and Rachel Gwerder who ‘ripped her shooting technique apart’.

Along with the WBC finals, where the Volcanoes are among the five teams playing for the ‘plate’, Makayla’s other focus in Dunedin is a three day trial camp for the Junior Tall Ferns from Sunday.

“I want to give all my dedication to the tournament, then I will pull some more out of the tank for the trial,” says Makayla.

“It’s been really good playing for the Volcanoes. They are really awesome and supportive.”

Her talent has shown through since picking up miniball in Year Six at Tauranga Primary School. Three years later she was in the girls’ college senior A team, and has gone on since to make the U18 development squad last year then the national U18 team this year.

Gay marriage bill reveals divides Tauranga resident Jaime Attenborough supports the gay marriage bill recently pulled from the ballot in Parliament, but Tauranga MP Simon Bridges remains undecided.

Labour MP Louisa Wall’s bill re-defining marriage is expected to pass its first reading before being assigned to a select committee, where members of the public will be able to make submissions.

Members of parliament will be allowed to vote according to their conscience instead of along party lines. Already the bill is proving divisive, with some Labour Party members describing it as potentially damaging, immoral and offensive.

Father’s day on the water Tauranga Yacht Club members are making their keelboats and their skippering skills available for dads, mums and kids to get a taste of sailing on Father’s Day on September 2.

Everyone is invited to get actively involved in the sailing or just enjoy the ride, and there is the option for the very young and those less agile, to take the comfortable, motorised option aboard the cruise boat “Luv Boat II”.

“We think that’s pretty good value for a fun afternoon on a yacht on our beautiful harbour, which is arguably the jewel in Tauranga’s crown,” says commodore Gary Smith.

“In fact I think many people will be surprised at how inexpensive sailing can be in Tauranga, compared to many other sports.

“Father’s Day means different things to different people, but whether it’s dad looking for a chance to relax, mum wanting to arrange some father/child bonding time, or the kids wanting to give dad something more than a cup of tea in bed, this fits the bill.”

Learning the art of karate Since being introduced to Japan about 100 years ago, karate has spread across the world as a means of improving and maintaining good health.

Bay of Plenty Karate Association trainer Rangi Smith uses a three step method when teaching his students.

“Becoming a good karate person is possible when one tries to improve their attitude and character. Having an open mind when training you can learn well from

your sensei, but if you are full of your own opinions your learning will be limited.”

To start, students learn movement such as how to block, punch and kick, and other skills including coordination and body conditioning and footwork.

“Always try to practice correct form. If you practice incorrect or bad form over time you will get good at having bad form.”

With good training students will get better at these movements and develop technique, says Rangi.

“Once you have a number of good techniques, your self-defence skills are greatly improved.

Having good focus and concentration also is very important.”

After a few years of regular training, Rangi says students will be able to use these techniques efficiently and effectively, and will learn to use their instincts to fight.

“You can have the best punch or kick technique in the world, but if you cannot use them they are no use to you.

“Practicing with a partner is very important to be able to learn the many different ways of usefulness of techniques. Two or three partners is also important for self-defence.”

How to desert the sinking ship?

There is still discontent amongst some elected members over the proposed selection of tsunami warning sirens.

On one hand, it’s often not a good idea acting on a layman’s perception from a sometimes oxygen deprived atmosphere in the Council Chamber.

On the other hand, a dose of reality from laymen with feet planted firmly on the ground can introduce practical prag-

matic solutions. Process such as council is going through over tsunami sirens can be self-defeating along the lines of – well, we followed due process and therefore this must be the correct outcome. In my view the outcome is all important and process is a distant second. After all, the

process is written by someone and errors and omissions do occur. I’m not saying that’s happened here but it could be that there are more cost-effective solutions.

The reason I’m raising this issue again is twofold. First, there is every likelihood ratepayers won’t have to pay for this.

Council’s involvement is hopefully only to ensure continuity up and down the coast. But, more importantly, the actual function of tsunami warnings.

Last weekend the traffic shambles that occurred at the Wairoa River Bridge with the closure of SH29 over the Kaimais at Ruahihi gives an indication of what might happen in the event of a mass evacuation at short notice.

All the traffic management plans in the world and tsunami warning sirens won’t overcome the fact that there are very few routes to sufficiently high ground to cope with our population in the event of a moderate tsunami.

A tsunami about five metres high went 10km inland in the 1500s, apparently.

A related issue is the Maunganui/Girven Rd intersection. NZTA is budgeting $60 million over three years to fix this problem. It’s intertwined with Te Maunga, in that you need to address both intersections because fixing one just shifts the problem. So evacuating the coastal strip would be a major logistical event requiring many hours of lead time, which might indicate that a tsunami event close enough to warrant immediate warning by sirens would be over almost before it started.

Other items at full council included council agreeing in principle the use of council land at Cliff Road for a (non ratepayer funded) museum. An amendment was moved “or other site options” and passed and $100,000 has also been confirmed for resource consent costs contribution. whenua “to identify commonalities” is to happen shortly. Plus council satisfaction with the business case and funding plan. We don’t want this proposal to fail part-way through and then have ratepayers pick it up. This would/could be a back door funding mechanism and variations have happened – sometimes unintentionally. A potential funding source identified by the Museum Trust is the Bay of Plenty Regional Council Infrastructure Fund. Good luck with that one!

The Tauranga Community Housing Trust has completed its purchase of the Clarke Street pensioner flats from council. Purchase price is $850,000. This is a community initiative to make better use of housing amenities and is self-supporting. If successful, this model could be a way forward for all council pensioner flats. Council is only involved by an accident of history when Central Government tried to devolve its responsibilities to councils in these and other matters by offering cheap loans. Once locked in, Government soon hiked up interest rates so ratepayers were then compelled to subsidise pensioner housing. Most unfair when you consider many homeowners are struggling to pay their own high interest mortgages to house themselves. We got this back on an even keel eventually and rents now make this activity self-supporting but it is an activity better suited to the likes of the Community Housing Trust.

Council accepted a Relationship Agreement with the Tauranga Environment Centre Charitable Trust. The stated purpose is to describe the way TCC and TEC will work together to provide environmental services to the communities of our city. TEC chairperson, ex-councillor Mary Dillon, presented the draft agreement. One clause in it reads interalia “TCC will do its best to understand and respond to the constrained resources of TEC…” Catherine Stewart successfully moved a contra clause stating that TEC would do the same for TCC. In another part it outlines “In relation to the environment TCC plays multiple roles including that of Funder.” No thanks, and I moved an amendment stating no ratepayer funding for administration or operations. This set Larry Baldock off and he said it was a waste of time and the only purpose I had in moving this amendment was “to generate a headline for my next column” amongst other incorrect assumptions. I’ve heard soothing assurances before when questions are answered verbally and learned the hard way that all that counts is what is written down. In the end the amendment succeeded 7-3 with Larry, Terry Molly, Mayor Stuart Crosby opposing and Tony Christiansen absent.

Terry Molloy will be council’s representative for the TEC. Council does contract some service work to TEC and that will continue. With council’s stated intention of cutting costs, it’s important not to set future councils/ ratepayers up for ongoing expenditure. TEC are already getting funding from the regional council.

Four section lots for marine-related commercial purposes were approved adjacent to the recently approved boat park on Keith Allen Drive, Sulphur Point. This may go some way to relocate small business dislocated from the private complex across the road when their leases were not renewed some years ago.

Elim Christian Centre and The Weekend Sun want to celebrate champion dads in the Bay; those who have braved the elements and gone the distance for their family.

This year’s competition is seeking courageous fathers. A lot of courage is needed to lead a family, to be a man of strength and integrity. Even the little things take courage, like providing for a family when there isn’t much

work, or making an ethical decision.

In 75 words or less, describe a time when your dad showed great courage and he could be named 2012 Dad of the Year.

Then bring them along for a Fathers’ Day celebration at Bethlehem College where there will be donuts and gifts for dads, a bouncy castle, big boys’ toys and spot prizes.

Having witnessed the national celebrations when New Zealand athletes won gold at the London Olympics, it’s clear we love to celebrate champions. Dads are often the unseen champions – braving the blood, sweat, tears and nappies – but seldom is there a victory dais for them to stand on.

Let’s recognise dads and all their efforts this Fathers’ Day, Sunday September 2.

Bellyful seeks help to fill bellies Tauranga mother-of-one Alaina Parkinson has taken it upon herself to start a local charity offering free meals to families with newborn babies and she needs help to get the ball rolling.

Bellyful is a nationwide, not-for-profit organisation currently operating from 12 branches throughout New Zealand.

Founded in Auckland in 2009, Bellyful helps families with babies under three-months-old by providing simple but nutritious meals, regardless of the families’ incomes.

Alaina was inspired to start a Tauranga branch after seeing Bellyful founder Jacqui Ritchie on TVNZ’s Good Sorts.

“I heard of it and I thought ‘oh that would be a really cool thing to get involved with’.

“I looked into it and found there wasn’t one in Tauranga; apparently a lot of people have asked about it.” Alaina decided she would take on the role of area coordinator for Tauranga and help to get a local branch up and running.

Alaina says while she received a lot of help from her husband and mother when her first daughter was born, she can imagine how difficult it could be for mothers with multiple children or less help.

“I know that so many women don’t have that support. “I know that there are a lot of mums out there that are having a second child. It would just be so difficult. “It’s not only about the meals; it’s about bringing the community together.”

Bellyful also helps out families struggling to cope with parent or child illness. Before the Tauranga branch can take off, Alaina needs to find volunteers to help with fundraising and cooking meals.

Bellyful branches work from Bellyful recipes with specific ingredients and have cook-a-thons once a month where volunteers get together and make the food.

An information evening is being held next month for those interested in helping out.

Mount toy haven seeks help Despite operating in the Bay for more than 15 years, the Mount Maunganui Toy Library is a toy haven still unknown to many.

The not-for-profit organisation provides endless entertainment for children at a minimum cost – operating similarly to a standard library but instead of books, it rents out a huge range of children’s toys to its 200-odd members.

The library, on Macdonald Street in Mount Maunganui, stocks hundreds of toys for children aged from birth to six years old which can be rented for two weeks for between $1–$5 each.

There is also a big selection of larger toys, including ride-on toys, water tables, slides, bikes and dolls’ houses. A bouncy castle and bubble machine also prove popular for parties.

Treasurer Teresa Snell says it is fulfilling to provide children with continuous entertainment in a time when toys can be so expensive to purchase.

“This is a great way to give children a wide range of toys or, if you’re considering a larger purchase, to see if your child likes a certain toy.

“Especially with the bigger toys, people don’t want to purchase or store them long-term.”

She says they offer deals for grandparents, who often find renting a stroller, high chair or games very helpful. Teresa says the library is in constant need of funding to pay rent and purchase new toys.

Right now, the organisation is looking for committee members to help run the library, including a grants officer and toy purchasers.

King to speak in Hamilton One of New Zealand’s top criminal defence lawyers, Greg King, will discuss the controversial Scott Guy murder trial with an invite-only audience in Hamilton on August 31.

King, who defended Ewen Macdonald, is a guest speaker at the next Waikato Institute of Technology’s Press Club event at Hamilton’s Ferrybank Conference and Convention Centre.

He will speak about the infamous case to an audience of about 100 guests including journalism students, politicians and well-known media personalities.

King’s clients include Clayton Weatherston, who was charged with the murder of Sophie Elliot, and the oldest man to be charged with murder in New Zealand at 90years-old.

King accepted the invitation to the media lunch from Wintec editor in residence Steve Braunias, who organised the event.

Earlier this year, the press club, formally known as Media Bites, hosted a talk by New Zealand First leader Winston Peters, who spoke about the state of the nation’s news and political reporting.

Past speakers have included Paul Holmes, Te Radar, John Campbell and Michael Laws.

Sir Colin Meads, politicians David Shearer and Simon Bridges, TV3 political editor Patrick Gower and numerous newspaper editors have also previously been on guest lists.

Remembering the early years, sales manager Kathy Andrews, who joined the “family team” three months after the first issue came out, says the office was so cramped that the nine staff were “pretty much sitting on top of each other”.

I watched a very upset property owner in Rotorua, plunging a three metre rod down into the soil on his property to illustrate how the local council was to blame for giving consent for a residential development to be built on such an inappropriate land structure.

We have all been warned but there are many examples of dubious land development in the Bay of Plenty. Farmers are even more aware of the problems with our soils as they are often accused of bad farm management by not controlling run-off from their farms, by allowing stock to graze on stream banks and by developing roading and structures on their land that threaten our ‘versatile soils’. It seems that the gentleman believes that council or perhaps both councils could be the problem with inadequate understanding control of development and in particular control of stormwater in all parts of the district Omokoroa can absorb a certain amount of rain and release it through the soil without too many problems but as roads and

houses appear, the run-off is concentrated in water courses that become significantly more saturated than the soil. It is unbelievable that the council believed they could put another 6000 houses with the associated roading on the peninsula and not expect an increased problem with stormwater and land slumping. Councillor Webber has revealed that the council has spent over $50m already on stormwater control to protect the current Omokoroa development alone. The slumping with damaged homes in Matua recently and the Vale Street collapse a few years ago are more examples of the same inherent instability in our soils.

The recent protection of versatile soils for agriculture has seen more residential development on flood plains. In the last District Plan WBOPDC provided maps of what they considered might be flood prone areas. One project at proposed at that time included a 40 house development on the McKinney Stream estuary. The project was successfully challenged with local informa-

tion of actual flood pattern information available in the local area. This exercise also revealed that the council had no guidelines for residential development on flood prone areas and the engineering practice of top loading land to compact the soils is useless when the soil becomes saturated. A builder’s report I saw on a property recognised a house splitting in two because, in one part the soils was ‘so saturated it lost its load bearing capacity’. The local phrase is that it had ‘turned to porridge’ but the proper term is liquefaction.

Maybe we will need an earthquake before the council will admit that their approved residential developments are disasters waiting to happen and admit that farmers might know more about the land than they think. The recent increase in storm bombs has revealed the need for a better understanding that the rich versatile soils are a problem for every one in the Bay and that council’s responsibility has to start long before demanding site engineering reports and charging ever-increasing consent fees.

getting strong inquiries from first home buyers, along with some interest from investors and higher bracket buyers.

Craig says with strong buyer interest limited by property listings, it was a good time for people who had been thinking about listing “because the buyers are there”.

But he stressed it is important for vendors to ensure the property is prepared for sale - both on the property itself and with paperwork addressing issues including any outstanding consents.

Figures from QV.co.nz show prices in Tauranga city have gone up 1.6 per cent over the year to a median of $401,678, a rise well below the national average of 4.6 per cent. The national average has been pushed up by a strong growth trend in most main cities (Auckland 6.3 per cent, Christchurch 5.8 per cent, Dunedin 3.8 per cent and Hamilton 3.5 per cent), while other main centres and provincial centres have lagged behind.

QV.co.nz research director Jonno Ingerson says Tauranga values have been flat for most of the last year, with most of the 1.6 per cent increase over that time occurring in the last quarter. But he says these rises may be short lived with the latest month showing values flattening again.

If you want to achieve something, you do need to put in the hours, you do need to sacrifice for the greater reward; you also need to accept that sometimes you won’t achieve it when you thought you would, and to

make the decision to persevere because it is also in the present play of the moment that you begin to become the winner – in whatever field you are working.

In some cases it is not possible to restore back to how things were. Some problems, especially chronic diseases, cause permanent change and damage. With these our goal is to slow the rate of damage and to restore original function as much as possible.

If you have a health problem, it is important to test the ability of your body to heal itself by adding the nutrients that can bring change to damaged tissue. Unfortunately most people never give themselves the chance to do so. Everything starts with diet and some foods tend to help while others hinder. The role of well formulated supplements is critical as these can target specific amounts of nutrients. The best part of my role is to see the delight when

people get real improvements from long term problems by making what are often small adjustments.

As an example, our bodies need to be able to make sufficient antioxidant enzymes to neutralise the free radicals that are part of most disease processes.

To make these enzymes, your body needs sufficient selenium, zinc, copper and manganese.

Without these your body cannot defend itself or heal when damaged. People who are unwell should ensure their daily multi-supplement has 75-150mcg of selenium, 7.5-15mg of zinc, 1-2 mg of copper (zinc and copper are closely interrelated) and 1-2mg of manganese ideally as amino acid chelates.

If your knee or other joint cartilage has eroded from arthritis, realistically the damage has been done. What

we can do is to slow further damage and to take the inflammation from joint tissue. In the case of arthritis we want to put the handbrake on the free radical damage to cartilage cells, to reduce joint tissue inflammation then to provide the building blocks of cartilage.

This will not turn back the clock but it may well slow further damage and to make things much more comfortable. with John Arts Over the next few weeks we will look at how nutritional therapy can be introduced alongside conventional medical treatment for some common problems. ‘Tough’ cat’s mates need homes too The Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre had such a good response to last week’s article about their black cat Diesel that they have decided to appeal to the public for homes for other unfortunate felines in their care.

Rena, another black cat, was found by a member of the public who had seen two children dumping it. The cat, likely between 1-2 years old, kept hanging around looking for food, and was transferred to ARRC thanks to a referral from a vet clinic. “She is sweet and affectionate and must have been someone’s little darling previously,” says ARRC Wildlife Trust coordinator Sue Mackey.

A second cat – this time a ginger boy aged about four – was also brought in by a member

of the public who found him roaming homeless near their home. They took pity on him, fed him and had him desexed in preparation for rehoming, before handing him to ARRC on the advice of vets. Sue says he is a kind and gentle boy who likes to sit on a lap but would rather not be picked up. The team at ARRC also have plenty of other furry friends looking for a home.

Skin checks Who, what, when, how?

New Zealand has one of the highest rate of skin cancers in the world.

What is involved in a skin check? A skin check is more than just looking. It involves a full history of skin cancer risk, skin care advice, addressing spots of concern and a systematic exam of all body parts with particular attention to sun-exposed sites. Your dermatologist may elect to use dermatoscopy, which is a skin surface microscopy to further enhance diagnostic accuracy. If there is suspicion of a skin cancer, a biopsy (removal of a small piece of skin) may be performed and sent to the laboratory for further analysis.

Early detection of skin cancer improves outcomes.

Two out of three New Zealanders will be diagnosed with a skin cancer by the age of 70. In spite of these statistics, dermatology teaching in medical schools is under-represented and highly variable. One tonne Te Puke scouts 1930s era Te Puke scouts stand tall.

Planning is underway for the Te Puke Scout group’s centenary to be celebrated on the final weekend of October.

The troop has been running since 1912, apart from periods during the two world wars due to a lack of youth numbers and leaders.

Organisers are looking for an indication of the number of people interested in attending before committing to the scale of the celebrations, with registration forms to be sent to those who express interest. Many areas around Te Puke have had strong connections with the pursuit, with membership in the

district reaching approximately 200 cubs and scouts in the mid-1950s.

In 1963 the present Te Puke Scout Hall was built in Stock Rd after a significant effort was put into raising funds.

Currently, there are no scouts groups in Maketu, Paengaroa, Pukehina or Pongakawa, with children from those areas travelling to Te Puke for activities.

Lions rally to bring Christmas fare The Otumoetai Lions are planning to rally behind the needy in December by launching a new Christmas tradition benefitting the Tauranga Food Bank.

Rain or shine, the charitable organisation will run the Lions Tin Can Rally at Baypark on Sunday, November 9 from 1-3pm.

Registration for the event, to be

held at The Strand car park off Wharf St from 9-11.30am, will be a good time for the public to view the bikes.

Registration, costing $15 and at least two cans of food, includes a souvenir rally pin, a special gift and a raffle ticket, with more tickets given to those who bring additional cans of food.

Prizes include two $250 Bayride gift certificates, two $250 Motocity gift certificates, high tea and

buffet vouchers from Trinity Wharf Hotel and a Discover Scuba package for two people from Earth2Ocean Tauranga.

Fascinating field fungi for all One of the oldest foraged foods are mushrooms.

On the outskirts of Milan I’ve seen the locals foraging for mushrooms and collecting them in wicker baskets as they have done for centuries.

The most prized specimens fetch good prices at the local market.

Years ago on the outskirts of Christchurch, in the foot hills around Banks Peninsula, I remember

gathering large flat field mushrooms from the paddocks.

These days however because of pesticide over-use field mushrooms seem harder to find and some people hunt out a particular type of mushroom that contains psilocybin, well known for its hallucinogenic properties.

Cultivated mushrooms are the safer option as there are a few dangerous and deadly ones; fungi given names like death cap and amanita muscaria

– bright red with white patches of Strychnine.

Over the past few springs there has been a hexagonal lace-like fungus which sprouts from a puffball-like pod under trees by the Waikareao express way.

The children enjoyed poking them with sticks to watch them unfold and expand like something from another world.

The mushrooms these days are

Method: In a large flat baking dish, place mushrooms stalk up.

Heat vinegar and sugar until dissolved, and pour over mushrooms. Sprinkle with thyme, garlic, sea salt and cracked pepper. Place in pre-heated oven at 130 degrees Celsius for one hour.

Remove from the oven after an hour, turn them over and allow to cool. Crumble goat feta over mushroom gills, drizzle over avocado oil and place under a hot grill until golden, about 5-8 minutes. Serve on fresh micro greens, available from Another Green World at the Tauranga Farmers’ Market, and splash with balsamic and avocado oil.

After more than five years serving Asian meals, Tauranga’s favourite Chinese restaurant is introducing a new a la carte menu.

Eastern Ocean Restaurant in Grey Street, already popular for its bustling Yum Cha experience, will now be offering freshly cooked dishes at unrivalled prices.

I had the opportunity to meet restaurateur Benson Qin and sample dishes from his new menu.

It’s difficult not to relax as we settle into the comfortable dining chairs and drink the jasmine tea we are offered on arrival. The surroundings are just as warm, with decorative gold wallpapers and red carpet creating an authentic and tasteful ambience.

The menu is simple and authentic, and includes the mainstays of Chinese cuisine as well as an extensive new range of flavours.

For entree we are offered dumplings from the Yum Cha menu, served in traditional steam baskets. The Pan Fried Pork dumpling and the Steamed Pork and Spinach dumpling are perfectly cooked - the flavours are fresh and combine wonderfully. With three dumplings on each plate, you may be fighting over the last one.

Method Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees Celsius.

Line a sponge roll tin with baking paper or spray with oil.

In a large pot, melt butter. Add cocoa and stir for 30 seconds. Remove from stove. Stir in sugar followed by the rest of the ingredients apart from chocolate. Poor into sponge roll tin and sprinkle chocolate drops over the top before you place in the oven. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Allow to cool sprinkle a little icing sugar over the top.

Reading and hearing all about the water rights is driving many of us insane. Rain comes from the sky, clouds, heavens, whatever you like to call what is above us on earth.

It comes down, of course in many forms; sleet, snow, rain, hail; and brings tourists to the mountains but can cause havoc for the farmers and to those who wish to climb mountains, perhaps, lose their lives. Hail and rain brings trouble at times as well. Damage causes floods and loss of life and livelihood as well.

So do we put a claim to the Maori, Iwi, Treaty of Waitangi, whatever they call themselves to pay insurance companies for the damage it’s caused? Oh no!

The greedy citizens just want, and keep wanting – power, drinking water and all the mod-cons that other nations have brought into this country for all of us. It’s true they are trying to make a mockery of the Treaty of Waitangi and form their own selfish, greedy group and then run the country.

Like Fiji, under their cruel leader, or will they fight among themselves and kill each other like back in history to find a leader? I wonder which tribe will win?

Licence to blame In response to an article written by Letitia Atkinson ( The Sun Fri Aug 17) quoting Dr David Jones, “that poor housing, unemployment and large family size are risk factors” In my childhood (two generations ago) we were often brought up in old draughty houses, no insulation whatsoever or double glazing, and a family of three or four children the norm. We didn’t have the aggression we see now. I appreciate that finding employment is quite difficult at present but there has always been a situation when some people have had to take a job that was not their choice and they certainly were expected to turn up on time, alcohol and drug free!

A PC (politically correct) attitude to life gives a licence to always blame someone or something else.

It’s time we took responsibility for ourselves and taught our children likewise. Greed and selfishness can never be overcome by legislation.

One gender parenting My Oxford Universal dictionary does not define a family as having to include people of both genders.

The word family embraces various definitions. Come on Ursula McGrath, do unto others and give those who form one gender parented families the right to chose to be married or not. Teenage breeding scheme in fifth decade The extremely successful teenage breeding programme being run by the New Zealand Government looks set to continue into its fifth decade.

With teenage birth rates in some sectors now so high, we’re getting enquiries from overseas countries wishing to up their birth rates.

When it began in the 1970’s everyone thought it was a huge joke. Lying around all day doing nothing except misbehaving and fornicating and getting paid for it.

In hindsight the cost is high. Not only for the whole country but for the individuals involved who become addicted to being rewarded for failing.

The NZ welfare state is anything but well. It’s failing our people, it’s failing our nation but most of all, it’s insidiously undermining our relationships with one another.

What seemed like a good idea in the 1930’s has underwritten a 21st Century nightmare. Our high and overflowing court and jail rates are testimony to this.

We desperately need new ideas and new ways to succeed in today’s unforgiving world and I would suggest giving benefits to young people to fail and breed isn’t one of them.

So come on NZ Government, let’s get real here.

Stop sponsoring uneducated teenagers from breeding another lost generation.

We’ve got enough thieves, thugs and thickheads out there already.

Unacceptable Rena cost With regard to reports that the Rena debacle could cost New Zealanders as much as $50 million.

This has to be completely unacceptable. We did not put the Rena on the reef. The responsibility for this and subsequent results lie completely with the owners and insurers. End of story.

When the Golden Master was beached on Matakana Island after striking the same, or a nearby reef many years ago I do not recall any demands being made on New Zealand taxpayers to foot any of the resulting recovery, or any other costs.

Fine line between Maori: Get beyond grievance mode freedom of speech and xenophobia I am writing to support the letter written by Tasha Tukaokao, August 17. I am also appalled at the ‘racist crap’ constantly spewed across the letters page of The Sun. These opinions are short on logic and long on xenophobia. Greedy Maori seems to be a constant favourite theme. It seems strange that trying to recover stolen possessions is considered greedy. Would your correspondents be so generous if the govt turned up and took their land, compensated for that ‘acquisition’ with $12.50, but only after 150 years of bureaucratic denial? In regards to your note about freedom of speech, I think that is a little disingenuous.

It reminds me of the ‘we were only following orders’ claims of SS officers at the Nuremburg trials. They also had something to do with racism I believe. With respect Brian, you do edit letters, sometimes abridging them. And freedom of speech is not a carte blanche invitation to hate speech. There are limitations to free speech. I appreciate it is difficult for you.

You have to walk a fine line indeed! Other newspapers often don’t print letters, simply publishing a reply that the letter wasn’t printed as ‘these issues have already been thoroughly canvassed’.

We are entitled to our opinion, but xenophobia is not an opinion, it is a psychological dysfunction (insanity) caused by the ego attaching itself to a belief. And a belief is not a truth.

If people have something to say they should carefully consider their ‘belief ’ and ask themselves; ‘can I really know this to be true?’ And not in some silly superficial way, but really try to consider things from a neutral perspective. Maybe they could then offer a solution.

Breach of natural justice For your information and for that of your readers.

The BOP Regional Councillors they voted for, have decreed after months of contemplation that claims of Significant Maori Areas are not required to be supported by real evidence of their existence, nor are claimants required to consult with affected landowners.

This lop-sided breach of natural justice has often occured, and by this decree will continue to occur. It is unjustifiable and must halt. Be aware and check your property title. If you believe there is a councillor who will listen, raise the issue.

Turning a blind eye in disbelief has been convenient.

But it is not turning the tide on groundless claims.

Let’s hold a referendum. Is this a fair go? Or is it not?

In reply to Tasha Tukaokao, you wrote an energetic and passionate letter about “racist crap”.

None of it is directed at Maori as a people, it is purely about money and is nothing to do with the people or the culture. It is one hundred percent about the deeds of the few in the cabal who are claiming ongoing squillions in cash and assets through what is being seen as the Treaty Gravy Train and which sadly does not appear to reach those further down the food-chain. No-one is complaining about compensation for genuine claims.

I recently quoted Maori academic Dr Brian McDonnell who warned in essence that “The Waitangi Express should apply

the brakes to slow the rush into a divisive future.” He also said that Maori “must put the distant past behind them, clear up genuine grievances, get beyond grievance mode and take personal responsibility to improve their lives.” The fact that he mentions “divisive future” and “genuine grievances” shows his concern about the direction of the treaty claims of his people.

So Tasha, you and the rest of middle New Zealand who just go about their lives, are not the subject of the continuing discussion.

Many thanks to Brian for having a forum where all, including Tasha, can voice an opinion about a fraught subject which is heading in a very dangerous direction.

One ‘chosen’ race singled out for privileges It seems that Tasha Tukaokao (17-8-12) is very much against racism in the form of singling out one race of people from another.

That may seem fine, until one listens to the greedy racist claims that demand one ‘race’ of people to be singled out from the others for very special race based privileges. This ‘chosen’ race ( seemingly that of Ms Tukaokao) demand water rights, exclusive seafood quotas and allowances, their very own rugby team, and claims for just about anything you can think of from the air waves to the DNA of native plants, all of which racially

discriminate against me and all other non maori New Zealanders. So who are the racists? This group demanding these race based privileges or the group opposing these racist privileges? Seems obvious to me as I do not want to be a second class citizen in my own country. Until a Govt has the backbone to stop this racist corruption of our democracy, we are on the way to becoming an apartheid. It seems Ms Tukaokao would like that because she is amongst the favoured race.

Stealing resources from universal ownership I have some questions for Tasha Tukaokao.

Why does she find it acceptable that: Many Maori claims are now up to their fourth ‘full and final’ settlements? That Maori have submitted false and fraudulent testimony and evidence in support of claims to the Waitangi Tribunal for over 30 years?

That the Tribunal does not allow contrary evidence from genuine historical records that proves many claims to be based on fraud? That this fraud has been used to steal resources from the universal ownership of all citizens and provide it to Maori for their sole use?

When will these resources be returned to the ownership of all citizens and compensa-

tion paid to them by Maori for the pain and suffering caused by this loss? Maori leaders created this fraud and tribal members have shared in the theft it has brought about.

Maori and the manipulation In response to Tasha Tukaokao’s rant against Brian of the Sun for publishing letters which state reader’s views on the disgraceful way Maori are manipulating the Government and people of New Zealand, in order to gain control of this land. As for Tukaokao’s claim Maori are not interested in wealth, then why are they continually making false claims on New Zealand’s resources such as Fisheries, Forestry, Foreshore and Seabed and now Water and a share in the Asset sales which they claim they are against?

Too long we have had Government Ministers inventing Treaty principles out of thin air; forging unnecessary alliances with Maori separatists and surrendering our beaches so they can be handed to iwi in secret by their very own tame minister.

We have had corrupt Waitangi Tribunal refusing to pay researchers whose findings do not support their racist fantasy, and a Race Relations Commissioner who instructs councils to create special seats for one race only.

We have activist judges pretending that the 1840 sovereignty-for-protection deal was an equal partnership between the world’s then greatest empire and dozens of warring stone-age tribes that the British had saved from cannibalism, slavery and extinction. We have battalions of lawyers making fortunes from bogus claims and at least one major newspaper refusing to publish anything which criticises Maori.

We should be proud to have an Editor who has the guts to publish the true feelings of the population!

Sunshine and good times ahead What a pleasure to be writing this and looking out to a clear blue sky.

It seems to have been raining for ever. Not that I mind the rain. I grew up reading Philip Larkin and rain in his poems always symbolised fertility and all sorts of good stuff. I try to remind myself of that during these soggy times.

But the rain has – at least temporarily – stopped, sunlight is peaking through, next weekend marks the ‘official’ start of spring, and before we know it daylight saving will be upon us and it’ll all be lazy and hazy.

I could remind you of the songs: “1905”, “Soviet Snow”, “Neutral and Nuclear Free” (I don’t know if everyone knows she wrote that one – it seems more like a song that just ‘exists’), and of course that ditty about the fortunate, unfortunate American political dynasty. They would be good enough reason to check out the gig. But there’s also the fact that, although she seldom plays live these days, Shona is a dynamite performer.

Seeing her on a good night you really get it: these people aren’t called Kiwi icons just because of luck or longevity – it’s because they really are that good. She has a hypnotic charisma on stage, a poise, a control, whatever it is, that just shines through.

I don’t know exactly what she’ll be playing this time around, perhaps material from her 2007 album Pass The Whisper, a beautiful piece of work that was recorded right here at Whakamarama’s Boatshed Studio and delved musically into both Celtic and Maori roots.

She’s not short of a song or two.

Tickets for the Historic Village are $15 on the door.

the launch of the debut album from Shejus Greedy. Some of you might have caught the band’s regular slot at the Welcome Bay Tavern and if you haven’t there are many treats in store for lovers of high voltage funky blues.

The four-piece are made up of the singing frontline of Delayne Ututaonga and Grant Haua. Grant also provides his trademark guitar, while the not-at-all-shabby rhythm section comprises drummer Micky Ututaonga and Rob Paterson, a pair of musical legends in the Bay, where they have been laying down immaculate grooves since their time in Rotorua band Cairo in the eighties.

I’ve got a copy of Shejus Greedy’s new album, Natural World, and will be reviewing it shortly. In the meantime you can check them out live on Friday 31. As I write this there is a little confusion on Facebook as the gig has been listed for both 30 and 31 in various places. It’s on 31, though there are no details yet of which support bands are likely to be included on the bill.

Dir: Joseph Kahn - Starring: Josh Hutcherson, Shanley Caswell, Dane Cook I had never heard of Detention before it arrived at the DVD store so I was doubly delighted to discover its hyperactive charms.

Detention is a high-school comedy romp complete with a serial killer and sci-fi time travel. Mix Scream with Back to the Future and Scott Pilgrim Vs the World and you’re getting close.

The plot is deliberately and insanely complex and pushed along at such a speed that repeat viewing to catch all the background gags and details is almost obligatory. At it’s

most basic it’s about some teens about to go to prom, who are menaced (and some killed) by the delightfully named Cinderhella (who’s, in the Scream manner, also had films made about him).

But that’s not really central. It’s mainly a film about young geek Riley who wants to be popular but keeps ending up in embarrassing situations as her crush Clapton (Hutcherson) falls for the wrong girl and is beaten up by the school bully.

But that’s not it either. The main delight

Mysteries of Lisbon , the final film from veteran Chilean director Raoul Ruiz has had the term “masterpiece” thrown at it. But it’s not a film for everyone. It’s a four and a half hour costume drama in Portuguese and tells a complex series of interconnected stories in a manner so strange that it creates something of a dreamlike state.

At first it seems surprisingly crude: the staging is minimal and the camera placement ugly.

But then scenes of remarkable sophistication arise to prove it all a work of deliberate oddness.

Characters’ actions and reactions are similarly askew and unpredictable, and theatrical flourishes abound.

The plot? Well, it centres round an orphan and a priest, gradually filling with details of theirs and several other lives. After struggling initially I was mesmerized.

Luke Wilson’s everyman is having a bad day. He’s lost his real estate job, his wife is giving him a hard time and now Samuel L Jackson has knocked on his door.

Given that the film is called Meeting Evil it’s easy to assume that Sam is even worse than his alarming personality suggests. And so it proves as a murderous car ride ensues and the sad-sack loser is forced to man-up and fight back. This is pure pulp territory: Jackson is “testing” Wilson, or so goes his excuse for keeping him around while slaughtering half the neighbourhood. It’s tense and efficient, rarely letting up from the opening minutes.

Sometimes films exceed expectations. Mind you, Battleship starts from a fairly low base, being an adaptation of a board game with no noticeable filmic qualities (story, characters, etc). But it’s actually a whole bunch of fun. It’s an alien invasion flick, an absurd but enjoyable story, pitting the US navy (led

by Liam Neeson and Taylor Kitch) against 10 foot aliens with a mass of cool giant sci-fi hardware. Spectacular destruction unfolds. For a film – like the Transformers franchise – intended mainly to sell Hasboro merchandise, this is surprisingly good.

here is in the sheer mass of silly and imaginative stuff that the filmmakers continually throw at the screen, a barrage of sensory overload which would be tedious if it weren’t so smart, funny and inspired.

Wanderlust is the latest in a run of likeable rom-coms starring the immensely likeable Paul Rudd.

This time he’s hooked up with Jennifer Anniston and the unhappy couple flee Manhattan only to end up living in a hippy community. There they encounter about every hippy cliché going (Justine Theroux’s commune leader is a hoot) but, fortunately, the gags flow freely and there is an affectionate undercurrent to proceedings which make for a painlessly humorous hour and a half.

Family history – are you interested in yours?

The New Zealand Society of Genealogists is the foremost family history organisation in the country, with local branches and groups meeting at Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, Papamoa, Te Puke, Omokoroa, Katikati and Waihi.

The society celebrates Family History Month during August and the Tauranga Branch has members Heather and Billie offering advice and help in Tauranga Library’s New Zealand Room on Friday afternoons during the month, from 1.304pm. Call in and talk to them.

Disaster kits at discount This week’s earthquake and the rumblings of White Island are timely reminders of the importance of having an emergency survival kit.

The Bay of Plenty is not immune to disaster and as the Scout motto reminds us ‘be prepared’.

This week Tauranga residents can purchase a disaster survival kit with everything other than food recommended

by Civil Defence from the Te Puna Scout Troop at less than cost.

The kits are $125 with more than $160 worth of items. The payment is classed as a donation and $5 from every kit goes to the Canterbury relief fund

via Meridian Energy.

“We are helping people out for less than they could buy them for and helping people to be prepared, a winwin-win situation,” says troop leader Andy Goodall.

Play hits a comedy bull’s eye Tickets are now available for the 16th Avenue Theatre’s latest production, Playing Away, by Janet Shaw and directed by Michele McAnulty-Smith.

Rivertones flow our way The Waikato Rivertones will hit Tauranga with its Broadway tunes in early-September.

Master director Barbara Smith says the group, which has five Tauranga members, wanted to perform for Bay of Plenty audiences before competing in the world harmony championships in late-October.

The group contains more than 80 women, from teenagers to those older than 70, from throughout the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, King Country, Auckland and Taupo areas.

Broadway Bound is at Bethlehem College’s Performing Arts Centre on Sunday, September 2 at 2pm.

The title refers to the Broadway package the group is performing on the Denver stage, and is also the title of the group’s latest CD. The group’s music ranges from standards, big ballads and classic well-known songs to more modern music by artists such as Queen and Billy Joel, all sung in a cappella (unaccompanied) harmony.

The chorus includes Tauranga members Jackie Napier (bass), Gael McKimm (lead), Linda Thompson (baritone), Vee Turton (baritone) and Margaret Pringle (bass). They travel weekly for rehearsals across the Kaimais, and often spend weekends in Hamilton working with visiting American coaches.

Going for gold commitment and sacrifice

Well the sports fest is over and I can get some sleep.

No doubt like me, you have enjoyed watching the Olympics. The amazing achievements of the athletes, their feats of courage, endurance, skill and commitment make for gripping television. We have seen athletes bask in the glory of a gold medal and others deeply disappointed by failing to get gold.

I have been struck by the common expressions of thanks by the victors. They have thanked those who helped and encouraged them. They have said the hard work, sacrifice and commitment has been worth it. Each talked of getting up early, of rigorous gruelling training schedules, of sacrifices of time and leisure over many years, all to attain the goal of winning the prize.

In the Bible I’m reminded of how the Apostle Paul likened the Christian Life to a race. He says in Philippians 3:12 - “Not that I

have already obtained all this... But I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me… I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called my heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Like the Olympic athletes, Paul was prepared to make sacrifices for his faith and maintain a rigorous training schedule. The Apostle Peter tells us our faith is more precious than gold.

Sadly, too many Christians avoid or neglect the hard work and commitment required to maintain the basic disciplines of the Christian life. Things like prayer and Bible reading and regular worship.

Anyone would think the Christian life was a relaxing trip on a cruise ship! It’s not, it is a race and we don’t have to win, we just finish the race by being faithful. May the dedication of the Olympians inspire us in our commitment to Christ.

If my people, called by my name As those who are God’s people and part of the Church of Jesus Christ, we will face increasing opposition in this last hour against the truth of God’s word and against God’s standard of holiness and righteousness.

Religious and moral tolerance and unity in diversity will be the catch-cries that overshadow what will eventually lead to the compromises of truth that will bring about the false One World Church, detailed in the Book of Revelations.

The Church is the vessel of the Kingdom of God and the carrier of the life-changing message of hope of the true gospel of Christ, which is the power of God unto salvation. Our hope is in Christ and in the victory of the Cross of Christ and in salvation that changes hearts and lives.

The Apostle Paul says in Ephesians 6:12: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” He says further in 2 Corinthians 10:3-5: “For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God.” Only the Church has delegated authority for that realm of conflict.

Those who have come to genuine salvation in Christ are called to stand in

the place of delegated spiritual authority because we contend with spiritual enemies, not fleshly ones. The Church takes the spiritual high ground, not the moral high ground.

Our nation needs a praying, interceding Church – like the people God speaks about in 2 Chronicles 7:14: “if My people who are called by My name humble themselves, and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land”. The battle for truth and holiness, and for our nation, will only be won in the spiritual realm through prayer, repentance, confession and intercession.

Proverbs 14:34 declares “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people”. Righteousness comes from transformed hearts by the work of the Spirit of God in lives that have been redeemed through repentance and faith in the Son of God. Transformed hearts is our nation’s need, not changed laws.

New Zealand is in need of a move of God! Unless God steps in, our nation will continue down an ever-increasing slope of unrighteousness! Our nation at it’s worst, needs the Church as it’s best and as Dr. Andrew Murray wrote: a revived Church is the only hope for a dying world.

Regional art exhibition heading for Te Puke Art enthusiasts will be treated to a display of top paintings from throughout the Bay of Plenty and Waikato next weekend when Te Puke Art Society hosts a regional exhibition.

Society president Annette Webber expects about 200 pieces displayed from members of seven amateur art societies throughout the region, along with work by guest artist Steven Clark of Te Puke.

“There should be a good range of work on display and it’s great to have a local Te Puke painter as guest artist.”

The exhibition runs at Te Puke’s Memorial Hall on Saturday and Sunday September 1-2 from 10am-4pm, with work from members of art societies in Te Puke, Tokoroa, Rotorua, Te Aroha, Whakatane, Kawarau and Opotiki.

Shona Laing to perform one-off show New Zealand’s most commercially successful female artist will perform a one-off concert in Tauranga next week.

Shona Laing, who was one of New Zealand’s musical icons of the 1970-80s, will perform at Tauranga Historic Village Hall from 7.30pm on Friday, August 31.

Her hit “(Glad I’m) Not a Kennedy” charted internationally despite being banned in the United States.

Shona has toured extensively through Australia and the USA and was also a vocalist for Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. Tickets cost $15 at the door.

An unhappy chapter of Waihi’s past, the 1912 miners’ strike, is the theme for a special category in this year’s ARTWaikino competition.

It was during the unrest that Frederick George Evans, a striking miner, was killed by a policeman’s truncheon.

Artists can submit a piece in any medium and the committee is expecting some unique pieces of work. There will be one prize of $250 and the judge is Waihi identity Doreen McLeod This will be the twelfth annual art exhibition held at the Victoria Hall on SH2 at Waikino and ARTWaikino has been well supported over the years by artists and art lovers. It is the major fundraiser for the upkeep of the historic community hall.

There will also be a category for mosaics again this year, as well as painting, craft and photography. The overall

winner of all the categories will win the supreme award with prize money of $500 sponsored by Newmont Waihi Gold.

The committee has organised Bob Kerr from Wellington to judge the painting and craft section of the competition. Bob is holding his own exhibition of paintings depicting the miners’ strike at the Waihi Art Centre and Museum in November.

ARTWaikino is on at Labour Weekend and is open to the public from Saturday October 20 to Monday 22 from 10am to 4pm. Entry is by gold coin donation.

The Tauranga Embroiderer’s Guild 30th Anniversary Exhibition will open next week at Baycourt Exhibition Hall.

A range of exhibits will be on display, from traditional hardanger embroidery to modern contemporary pieces.

Particular items will be for sale and demonstrations and challenges will take place throughout the exhibition.

Member Jo Ann Ingram recently took

away three awards from the National Association of Embroiderer’s Guild conference in Christchurch. Her winning piece will be on display at the exhibition.

Jo Ann, who joined the guild in 1989, says anyone is welcome to attend the exhibition and check out the beautiful work from August 29-September 2 from 9.30am-4.30pm.

Delight for Te Puke audience Hamilton’s United Youth Orchestra will make its third visit to Te Puke in its ten year history on Sunday.

The orchestra, comprising about 30 members aged 13-21, was formed on February 12, 2003.

Music director Yoshi Tatsumi says the group’s goals include enjoying and appreciating classical, orchestral and chamber music, helping young people reach their potential and uniting young people from different cultures.

Entry to the event, beginning at Orchard Church, Te Puke on August 26 at 3pm, is by way of a donation.
