Never trust a duck with no pants We’ve warned you before about dodgy characters. First it was Donald Duck, who upset the PC brigade because he apparently runs around without pants.

Predictably, some academics try to make a career of researching it. Nudity in children’s literature has been the topic of some university studies. Like the world needs more studies of comic characters with their gear

off? How often do we gnash our teeth in frustration, hoping that someone would solve the conflicts in the Middle East, patch the hole in the ozone layer, find a cure for haemorrhoids, find a cure for Peter Dunne’s hair and… explain why cartoon animals keep dropping their daks?

Now a bunch of parents are taking another swipe at Disney, not because of the rude duck and his perverted performances, but because they believe some products may be harmful to their children’s health.

Sixty thousand have signed a petition protesting in New York, claiming Disney sells toxic lunch boxes. And that some back-to-school supplies contain vinyl with dangerous levels of toxic plastics. Donald seems to have ducked this one, Princess and Spiderman are in the firing line.

Lunchbox danger lurks

Their issue is with vinyl plastic and chemicals known as phthalates, which have reportedly been linked to serious health problems including asthma, ADHD and diabetes.

They say Phthalates are hazardous at low levels of exposure, disrupt hormones in our bodies, and have been linked to birth defects, infertility, early puberty, asthma, ADHD, obesity, diabetes and cancer.

I’m not surprised they are upset. The early Egyptians didn’t get along with Phthalates, either.

More questions

The RR inbox gets a lot of mail these days from informed and discerning readers, with many pertinent comments to make on the current political climate, the state of the economy and other well-thought-out observations.

Such as: “Dear Mr Rabbits, what is the fastest vegetable in the garden? Answer: the E-type carrot.”

And: “Roger, you’re ugly and your mother dresses you funny.”

Others are a bit more simplistic. And many, we can’t print here.

Lately, there have been those urging this columnist to run for council.

I have a standard response: “I’d rather run for the hills.”

For starters, who in their right mind would stand for council? You only have to look at the ones who made it, to understand this.

They give many hours to sitting in boring council rooms, listening to boring councillors; reading endless boring reports and pretending to understand them, and then pretending to make a smart decision. (The smart ones learn to either fall asleep, or pretend to be asleep.)

They then have to withstand a relentless barrage of criticism from a whole bunch of picky ratepayers, who all think they could do better, and will never be happy with any decision anyway.

Completely nuts

Over many years of covering councils for a variety of publications and news organisations, I’ve probably attended more council meetings than all of the current councillors put together. This vast local government experience makes some people think, that combined with my understanding of the mood of the community, that I would make a good councillor. Granted, that after decades in the media, and 12 years of running the Sun, we do have a pretty clear picture of the wants and needs of this community.

That’s all fine and dandy, but you forget, I’m actually still running for the hills, remember?

Because you’d have to be completely NUTS to run for council. And here, maybe, is the only reason that perhaps, I could weaken around nomination time, and in a moment of insanity, agree to stand.

These days however we are told people are living healthier and longer, so the old measures are a sliding scale.

When I was 10 I used to think anyone over 30 was elderly; anyone over 50 was positively jurassic. I hardly knew anyone over 80 and would probably have labeled them fossilised.

We’re reviewing our use of such terms, as they probably don’t contribute much to the story! Our apologies to anyone out there who we may have prematurely labelled ‘elderly’. A couple of weeks ago, we had a complaint from a boy racer who objected to being called that. His preferred title: Car enthusiast. Whatever, it is often other people’s perceptions we have to live with.

We’re sorry if, over the years, we have wrongfully pigeon-holed you.

Our reader took exception to the term, elderly.

Which got us wondering, at which point does one officially become elderly?

To a young journalist, anyone of pension age is probably viewed as elderly.

But the closer I get to pension age, the qualifying point doesn’t seem so clear cut anymore. The term really doesn’t accurately describe an age group; more a description of state of mind and body.

Pools and Baypark management merge Tauranga City Council is merging its pools and Baypark management organisations, as part of the continuing restructuring of Tauranga City Council.

The merger is brought about through the amalgamation of council-controlled organisations Tauranga City Aquatics Ltd and Tauranga City Venues Ltd. The merger is not expected to result in staff job losses because the merging of the two CCOs is at a governance level, with no transfer of activities or positions.

Staff from the allied council activity of Indoor Space and Active Living are to be offered similar positions with the new CCO, says the council’s announcement.

Indoor space activities, services that are currently contracted to Tauranga Leisure Ltd, will also be transferred to the new CCO.

Non-Baycourt elements of the council’s venues and events activity and the asset and operations functions will also be transferred to the consolidated CCO, but Baycourt itself will remain an in-house activity of Tauranga City Council.

The holding company for TCAL and TCVL is Tauranga City Investments Ltd, which, as ‘parent company’, will set up a transition board to assist with governance documents and service contracts and the amalgamation arrangements and processes.

Tauranga City Aquatics Ltd manages the city’s swimming pool network; Tauranga City Venues Limited manages the TECT Arena and Baypark.

The changes are intended to improve financial sustainability across the leisure and event activity and ultimately reduce the $14 million rates subsidy, says mayor Stuart Crosby.

Income from user fees for the

two CCOs is $9 million, costs are $23 million and the city council rates subsidy that bridges the gap between income and costs is $14 million.

“A big driver for this is improving the value of community assets by maximising their use. We need to make sure our assets are configured and aligned to deliver the best services we can and create opportunities for new business activities,” says Stuart.

The consolidated leisure CCO is expected to employ 140 fulland part-time, 40 casual, and 80 contracted staff, managing ratepayer-owned venues and facilities valued at $140-$160milion.

Director appointments also need to be addressed as part of the merger.

The terms of all five external directors of Tauranga City Venues Limited, and the only external director of Tauranga City Aquatics Limited, are due to expire on March 31, 2013.

Yoda’s attacker to be destroyed The dog that attacked Tauranga Police dog Yoda is to be destroyed, while its owner has been released on a good behaviour bond.

Raupurukamu Ti-Rohia Brown, 26, appeared in Tauranga District Court this afternoon, where he admitted to owning the dog that allegedly attacked Yoda in a confrontation in Gate Pa in July.

Brown admitted his two-year-old crossbred Staffordshire bull terrier Zion attacked Yoda as he and Senior Constable Kayne Cording tracked an offender in the Gate Pa area on July 20.

Suppression for sex charges A Tauranga man accused of paying a 16-year-old girl for sex has been granted name suppression.

The man was granted interim name suppression when he appeared before a registrar in Tauranga District Court this week.

The alleged offender is charged with one count of contract sex with someone under 18- years- old.

He is yet to enter a plea on the charge and is due to reappear in court on December 10.

Armed robber in custody A Tauranga man has admitted to robbing the Colorado Dairy on Cameron Road at knife point. He has been remanded in custody until his sentencing next month.

Bevan Peter Brown, 34, appeared in the Tauranga District Court this week, where he entered a guilty plea on the charges of aggravated robbery, possession of a knife and threatening to kill.

The charges arise from incidents on October 8, where Brown went to the Countdown supermarket on Cameron Road, from which he took a 20cm knife.

The court heard how Brown had the knife concealed in his pocket as he walked around the supermarket.

He then left the supermarket with a few grocery items and headed to the Colorado Dairy, where he waited outside until the shop assistant was alone.

He asked for a packet of cigarettes and a lighter.

Brown then pulled the knife from his pocket and pointed it at the assistant, telling them that there was no money on the card and not to call police or follow him.

Brown was remanded in custody and will appear in court on December 19 for sentencing.

Arson charge in school fire A school student is facing arson charges following a suspicious fire at the Whangamata Area School that caused thousands of dollars of damage last week.

The 17-year-old student appeared in Thames District Court yesterday charged with arson in relation to the fire, which started in the woodwork block on November 14.

Thames-Coromandel CIB Detective Sergeant Martyn Hughes says a joint Police and NZ Fire Service investigation established the cause of the fire at the Whangamata Area School was the reckless use of matches.

Stabbing case adjourned A 35-year-old man accused of stabbing three people during a dispute in Te Puke in June is due to appear in Tauranga District Court on December 6.

The Te Puke man, who was granted name suppression after appearing several times in court, appeared briefly in the High Court at Rotorua this week charged with three counts of wounding with intent.

The alleged offender, who required a translator in court due to his limited command of English, is accused of stabbing three people at a Te Puke address, one of which was

stabbed in the back as they went to the aid of the first victim.

Police were called to a Boucher Avenue address in Te Puke at about 9.45pm on June 27, where they found three men with stab wounds.

All three were taken to Tauranga Hospital.

During his last appearance in the Tauranga District Court, the accused was denied electronic bail due to being deemed a flight risk.

He was then remanded in custody until he appeared in the High Court at Rotorua.

His case has been further adjourned until December 6, where he will appear in Tauranga District Court.

Warning parents on farms Western Bay of Plenty parents and caregivers are being warned to keep an eye on children on farms following the death of toddler who died after a cow stood on his head.

Jack Tatham, two, died from severe brain injuries after he managed to get into a pen with unsettled cows on an Invercargill farm in August, 2011.

A coroner’s report released into the toddler’s death says Jack suffered a head injury after being stood on by a cow.

“When Jack was found, he was unresponsive and clearly suffering from a head injury with swelling to his left eye,” the report

by Coroner David Crerar said.

“Jack had accompanied his parents, Jimmy and Kerry Tatham, to the milking shed to perform routine tasks.”

The report states that Jack had managed to let himself out of the secure room his parents placed him in and got into the pen where the Tathams had placed newly delivered cows to settle, before they were released into the paddocks of the farm.

He says the tragic circumstances of the death do, however, serve as a lesson to all who have custody of vulnerable children.

“A child who is unable to perform his, or her, own risk assessment needs to be constantly supervised by a responsible adult to ensure no harm comes to them.”

Don’t be fooled Warning not to succumb to scams

If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is, is the message from Bay of Plenty Police.

Police are warning people not to fall prey to yet another scam circulating the area after officers have had reports of people succumbing to scams and parting with hard earned money.

Known as ‘upfront payment scams’, police say these begin with victims receiving a message that they are entitled to funds being held overseas and they need to part with a small amount of money to free-up the funds.

Detective senior sergeant Zane Smith says traditionally police have seen these scams associated with countries such as Nigeria but the recent ones appear to originate from Europe and the UK. “They are also not just via the internet; we have seen victims receiving personal letters through the mail.”

He says the scams are sophisticated and convincing, with official looking paperwork and certificates often being provided to make the arrangement appear authentic.

“The reality is that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

“Under no circumstances should you part with any money or any personal information or bank details when randomly approached in this way; nor should you underestimate the lengths that some criminals will go to make fraud convincing.”

Zane says people who are getting ‘spam’ or ‘junk e-mail’ should not respond to them and delete the items straight away.

He says never click ‘unsubscribe’ on a spam email as it tells spammers that you read the mail and increases the risk of you becoming a repeat target.

“Just delete or throw away messages.

“If you’ve parted with any money, the only way the scam will stop is if you stop paying moment.

It can seem convincing and can be tempting to see it through but there will be no money paid to you at the end, no matter what the correspondence promises.”

Zane says never agree to transfer money to someone you do not know.

Dealing behind bars lands more jail time A Te Puke man has had an extra two and a half years added to his sentence after he was caught dealing drugs while in prison.

Hemiona William Ririnui, 29, was serving a one year jail term after being sentenced on two counts of selling cannabis to an undercover police officer during an operation targeting drug dealers in the Te Puke area in 2010.

In September this year, Ririnui pleaded guilty to one charge of cultivating cannabis, possession of cannabis for supply, conspiring to deal cannabis and participation in an organised criminal group.

He was sentenced in the High Court at Rotorua this week to two years and six months.

The offences came to the attention of prison guards, who had been monitoring Ririnui’s calls.

Developer, council to share road upgrade bill A developer planning a medical centre, cafe, preschool and motel for the vacant lot opposite Tauranga Hospital was also told he would have to pay for a set of traffic lights and for fourlaning Cameron Road.

Developer Paul Spillane, of Mount Maunganui-based SNG Investments, told councillors this week it is unfair to make him pay the full cost when the city council, Tauranga hospital, and the village and Fairway Holdings in 17th Avenue will all benefit from the

road improvements.

He says the $15 million development, to be known as 830 Cameron Road, will provide 103 new jobs when completed, as well as employing 30-40 building trades contractors during construction, which is expected to take at least a year. The development itself also represents a considerably improved rating income for the council over the present unimproved carpark.

Council staff also wanted him to pay for four-laning Cameron Road between 17-18th avenues and traffic lights at 18 Avenue. The cost estimate is $600,000, but that’s excluding relocating the water

main, the recently laid broadband fibre optic cable and other utilities.

Mayor Stuart Crosby agreed the council and community also has a role to play in upgrading that particular part of the Cameron Road corridor, as the wider community will benefit from the work. His suggestion that the council and New Zealand Transport Agency be included in the costs sharing was adopted by the council.

The development is on the block between 18th and 19th Avenues, opposite Tauranga Hospital on land currently being used as a car park. Access will be via the avenues, rather than from Cameron Road. By Andrew Campbell

City Council rates rebate debate Most of the Tauranga City Council’s $3.7 million rates surplus is going to be returned to the people who paid it – the ratepayers.

The surplus arose largely because of lower operational costs and interest savings.

Under existing council policy the first $500,000 is automatically put to debt repayment.

Councillors were presented with three options on what to do with the remaining $3.2 million.

They included placing all or some of the money in the risk management reserve and using it to pay off some of the council debt, which at the end of June was $391 million, and is projected to be more than $400 million by the end of the 2013.14 year.

While $3.2 million doesn’t do much to knock down the debt total, every $1 million of debt reduction reduces interest by about $60,0000. The $3.2 million

could save the council $500,000 in interest payments over the next three years.

David Stewart proposed keeping the money, and using it to smooth over financial fluctuations projected in the long-term plan figures for the next five years. Bill Faulkner said he was aware of the financial advantages of keeping the money, but there was a moral issue.

The money belongs to ratepayers and should be given back, that is, used to reduce next year’s rates.

The $3.2 million is expected to reduce next year’s expected rates demand by 1.4 per cent, but it means a bigger percentage increase in rates the following year to bring the rates back on track with the long-term plan.

In the end Bill’s argument that it wasn’t the council’s money to begin with, won.

“There’s a moral issue here and that’s the one I’m sticking to,” says Bill.

Paper boy looking to walk A daily newspaper deliverer expecting to lose his job in company restructuring in March says he’s unlikely to accept the offer of a $100 bonus for delivering the paper until then.

The offer comes as the Australianowned Bay of Plenty Times plans to lay-off its delivery personnel as it moves from an afternoon to morning delivery.

The delivery person, who is paid $25 for about five hours work weekly and preferred not to be named, leaked a copy of a letter sent

by APN to paper delivery runners detailing the offer.

It read: “Whilst paper delivery runners are not eligible to receive redundancy payment, all existing permanent paper delivery runners who continue to deliver our paper until the change in March 2013 would receive a gross payment of $100”.

The paper boy says he and a friend are not likely to accept the offer.

In an earlier letter to delivery staff dated November 15, The Bay of Plenty Times stated the business was proposing to merge its paper’s delivery with The New Zealand Herald, another APN-owned paper, with delivery being managed jointly

by The New Zealand Herald franchisee on its behalf.

“If this goes ahead we would not employ paper delivery runners after March 2013,” states the letter.

The $100 offer comes while dozens of people are expected to lose their jobs as the Tauranga daily newspaper attempts to cut costs. It’s reported about 60 people are being made redundant from the paper’s Durham Street regional call centre and circulation offices.

Trust celebrates milestone with park extension A Tauranga trust celebrated a milestone achievement today when it hit the $1million donation mark to Tauranga charities and organisations.

To mark the occasion Legacy Trust opened the new extension to Tauranga Park in Pyes Pa. Tauranga MP Simon Bridges attended the event, with wife Natalie and 100 invited guests, including funeral industry representatives and charities from around the Bay. Legacy Trust is the brainchild of Gregory Brownless, who after spending six weeks working with

the bodies of the 3500 victims of the Boxing Day tsunami, decided to give back to the community.

“It made me think about my priorities. I learned a lot about life and death, returning home I felt quite unsettled.”

Two years later in 2007, Gregory decided to donate his funeral business, which he started in 1990, to Tauranga.

Since then, all of the profits from Legacy Funerals have gone to the Trust – which then gives the money to various organisations and charities in Tauranga.

Eggs-ceptional rocket challenge Forget about dreaming of flying rockets.

Six Tauranga Intermediate students are making it happen with the New Zealand Rocketry Challenge.

The school’s team of six is one of about 30 competing in the New Zealand Rocketry Challenge in Auckland this weekend, in a contest aiming to launch the rocket to a height of 150m and then landing a raw number eight egg ‘astronaut’ safely.

Science teacher John Marsh says the Tauranga team has practised landing safely by throwing the landing

craft and parachute from a two-storey building.

“We seem to have that under control – but we haven’t had a chance to launch because it’s been so windy.”

Next year the competition will be expanded to include secondary students and teams will need to build their own rockets, rather than just modifying rocket kits they’ve bought.

John says using the kits was a good way to get involved before building their own rockets.

“The boys have really enjoyed it and I’m expecting a lot more interest next year, with more teams from the school.”

The competition was originally planned for last weekend but was postponed because of wind.

Students surprise teacher with skydive It was supposed to be just another day for Mount Maunganui Intermediate School teacher Nicola Logan before she found herself 10,000 feet above ground.

During the past two months Classic Hits FM Radio station received more than 200 entries into their competition to ‘throw your teacher out of a plane.’ Bay of Plenty students and parents were given the chance to nominate a teacher to complete a tandem skydive whether for reward or revenge.

Year 8 students Colleen Fahy and Hannah Josephs nominated their form teacher as a belated 40th birthday present.

“She told us to. We just really wanted to do it as a late birthday present. We wanted to reward her for all her hard teaching.”

Nicola’s wish was to jump from a plane before she turned 40 in February this year. But she was unable to complete the tandem skydive

due to sickness.

She was teaching in her maths class when Classic Hits presenters Bridget Hastie and Will Johnston arrived to take her and her students in YMCA vans to Tauranga Tandem Skydive. Bridget also completed the jump.

The class of about 30 students had lunch at Classic Flyers after they witnessed their teacher jump from 10,000 feet.

Nicola says the hard part was leaving the plane and thanks her tandem partner Sam Perry for pushing her out.

“After we came down I had to ask what his name was. I put my life in his hands.”

Because this was her first skydive Nicola

says she was unsure of what to expect and had mixed feelings. She says this is not the last jump she will do and has even talked her son into completing one for his Christmas present.

Iconic relay resurrected

It’ll be a belter

A title, as well as professional business reputations, is up for grabs at the Carrus ‘Lord of the Ring’ charity boxing challenge.

Tauranga City Councillor and paralympian Tony Christiansen launched the iconic Relay for Life event this week, inviting Bay of Plenty residents to be involved in the worldwide phenomenon.

The 2013 Relay For Life, remembering those who lost their lives to cancer, will return to Tauranga after a four year break. Participants will run a relay track along Tauranga waterfront from 2pm on Saturday March 23 to midday on Sunday March 24.

Tony was quick to show his support for the event because of the major impact cancer has had on his life, including the loss of some of his family members.

“Cancer affects everybody in some way or another. We deal with it every day.

“I will be doing everything I can to show my support.

It’s all about the awareness. I am quite proud to be part of it, to be honest.

“The ‘feeling good’ part is the participation, knowing that what you are doing is helping everybody in one way or another.”

Waikato Bay of Plenty Cancer Society spokesperson Rachael Mounsey says while fundraising is an important part of relay, there is so much more to it.

“Relay for Life is about encouraging everyone to celebrate with those who have overcome cancer, remember their loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back against a disease which affects one in three New Zealanders by fundraising for the Cancer Society.”

Relay for Life involves teams of 10 or more walking around a track for 22 hours, with the opportunity for participants to fundraise before the event.

Classic Hits FM radio station will broadcast the event as it unfolds.

All funds raised go to the Cancer Society to provide supportive care for cancer patients, their families and friends in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty region.

Tauranga fighter Gunnar Jackson, who boasts both the New Zealand Super Middleweight and Pan Asia Boxing Association Light Heavyweight belts, has been confirmed to fight journeyman Moses Ioelu at TECT Arena on December 8.

Trained by Chris Walker at Tauranga Boxing Club, the hometown fighter has amassed an impressive 14-3-3 record since turning professional in May 2010.

“It will be a little bit scary fighting in front of the biggest crowd of my career and I am expecting a tough fight from a boxer who fights principally in Australia,” says Gunnar.

“However I have a good chin and don’t mind mixing it in close, so I am pretty confident that I can showcase my skills to good effect against Ioelu.”

Both belts Gunnar has won have come against opposition who were a step up in class. Pakistan Olympian Kasif Mumtaz was dismissed for the middleweight belt in a unanimous points decision, while the light heavyweight strap came from dropping David Letizia in the eighth round in Perth in April.

Gunnar retained his middleweight belt last month with a majority draw against Australian Contender television series participant Adrian Taiha.

It seems all of Tauranga is lining up to watch real estate agents, grocers, a radio host, financial planner, detective, lawyer, investment adviser and more go toe-to-toe. A total of 110 corporate tables of 10 have been sold. General admission seating tickets are on sale, cost $40.

“We’d been overseas when it was first being organised. We came back and were having dinner with Allan and his partner Sarah and they asked if we were going to the boxing. We said we didn’t know anything about it and they said it was going to be this huge event.

“Apparently one of the organisers had suggested to Allan that he and I should fight in it.

And at that point Allan hadn’t made the decision one way or another, and I said ‘we could do that, couldn’t we’?”

The orthodox fighter is supporting the Ruel Foundation in the Philippines, which he has seen in action first-hand.

It’s a faith-based humanitarian organisation that provides free medical aid to children in developing nations with physical deformities, such as cleft lip and palate.

“It’s one of those charities where a little goes a long way, so if they were to get $1000 from a fight like this they’d be able to do a lot with it.”

Rob admits to a few nerves at the prospect of fighting in front of a crowd approaching 2000 people, but is mitigating that with a training schedule including twice-weekly 90-minute boxing sessions, individual tuition and extra gym work.

Training has so far comprised running, sparring, skipping and pad work, with Rob focusing more on the boxing training than getting countless kilometres under his belt.

He’d begun to find his personal training a touch boring after taking it up late last year, and agreed to the bout because it represented a new challenge.

Loving the language Tēnā anō tātou.

It was a great pleasure to attend the recent National Māori Language Awards hosted this year in Tauranga.

The great thing about these awards is the spread of organisations which are nominated. The eligibility is quite straight-forward and focuses on what organisations do during Māori Language week. So we have district councils, libraries, newspapers, schools, businesses and of course there is an opportunity to acknowledge

those who have been major contributors to the survival and development of the Māori language.

This year, Dr Cathy Dewes of Ngāti Rangitihi and Ngāti Porou was celebrated for her involvement with a number of language initiatives including Te Kōhanga Reo, Kura Kaupapa Māori, Te Ataarangi and Māori broadcasting. In receiving the award, she told us to ‘love our language’.

Even though I am a speaker of te reo Māori, I am still a learner. As a second language learner, you develop skills to get you by when, for example, you do not know a particular word or phrase.

Hearings begin

This Friday the Local Government Commission is hearing verbal submission for appeals and objections against the council’s representation decision. It will be listening to 19 appeals or objections. Apart from one person who agreed with council, all the other 96 written submissions challenged the change from five to three wards, which was to be achieved by amalgamating Te Puke with Maketu and Waihi Beach with Katikati. As there was only one supporter of the council’s decision the community board chairs were asked to speak in support of the council decision. The commission’s role is normally to provide advice for councils, but in these hearings it can make such enquiries as it considers appropriate and may hold other meetings with interested parties to determine their own view.

Super city synergies

Regional councillors have been fortunate to receive a couple of presentations recently from staff at Auckland City Council. There is no doubt that they have their act together and planning is well under way to make Auckland “the most liveable city in the world”. Their Auckland plan is ambitious, but who could argue with the outcomes sought – a place that is fair, safe and healthy; a green Auckland that is beautiful and loved by its people, well connected and accessible, culturally rich and creative, that recognises Maori identity as its point of difference in the world, and which offers prosperity and opportunity. The plan calls for shifts including to: dramatically accelerate prospects of Auckland’s children, quality of urban living and strongly commit to environmental action and green growth.

Tauranga City is finally making the right noises Isn’t it great that one of our local bodies, Tauranga City Council is finally looking at a major restructuring of their organisation?

The reduction of 45 jobs, plus a further 32 by 2014, will be welcomed by ratepayers, if in fact it eventuates. This organisation currently employs 505 staff, so a 45 decrease represents a drop of nine per cent and if the further 32 eventuates that equates to a 15

shave local government costs. I have to say that I’m not that confident, as we saw the regional council conduct per cent drop. Visiting expert to talk about pressure on lakes Global trends indicating increased algae blooms in lakes and rising lake surface temperatures will be explored at Monday’s Café Scientifique in Tauranga.

Challenges of lake management, the value of water globally and options for New Zealand to continue managing its freshwater resources will form the basis of University of Waikato chair in lake restoration professor David Hamilton’s talk titled: ‘Environmental Prosperity: Mapping a pathway for future freshwater management’.

David will talk about the increasing pressure on lakes from greater loads of nutrients entering as a result of land use intensification, and discuss how New Zealand can continue to intensify land use while aspiring to higher water quality.

David was a founding member of the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network, which has grown to have more than 350 members

using high-frequency sensors to monitor lakes around the globe.

The work has provided unique insights into common features, such as lake surface water warming nearly twice as fast as air temperatures, blooms of blue-green algae becoming more frequent and lakes emitting greenhouse gas. David was awarded the New Zealand Freshwater Sciences Society medal in 2010 and the Hamilton City Kudos Award in environmental science in 2012. He is an adjunct professor with the Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology in China and is the current president of the New Zealand Freshwater Sciences Society. He recently received Marsden Grant funding to study toxin production found in blue-green algae in lakes.

Free surfer, weekend warrior, frothing grommet, local charger or professional, most surfers in our region tend to fall into one of these categories.

One of the best things about our sport is the variety of classifications surfers can be described by. Smoothest style, barrel rider, air game, big wave charger or all-rounder, individuals will have their own opinion of who qualifies for which.

To perform at one’s best requires calmness in familiar situations. So the more you do something, the better you will be. Opinions about who is the best surfer are often debated. Analysis of a surf can result in relative unknowns becoming the subject of choice for one mind-blowing wave. The problem is, can that surfer consistently perform at the same level in a number of locations? Eventually the same names normally cross people’s lips, and those names have all dipped their toes or bodies into contest surfing at some stage of their lives.

To improve your surfing to the highest level requires competition. A social touch player may be the best in your team. They may be as slippery as an eel, but put them up against quality players and they are often made to look very ordinary. The same occurs in surfing. A free-surfer who is relaxed can put together an amazing display, but in a coloured vest and under physical and mental pressure, they fall to pieces.

Our best local talent have at some time tested themselves in the competitive arena.

The best have excelled, the others have significantly improved the performance levels.

The best place to start is at club level. Just like every other sport, it is here where you find a network of people keen to help. We are fortunate enough to have one of the most successful boardrider clubs in Aotearoa on our doorstep. The Bay Boardriders Summer Series kicks off this weekend, so get in touch with the club via email: info@bayboardriders.co.nz and they will get you sorted if you are keen to develop your surfing further. Being able to perform at your best under time pressure can produce nerves and doubt.

Successful management of these anxieties is what separates the best from those that could’ve been. So whilst the free-surfer can be applauded for what they do, a surfer who performs at the same level in the intensity of a heat should be celebrated as the finest.

Mount Tongariro erupts Mount Tongaririo erupted on Wednesday afternoon sending an ash cloud three kilometres into the air.

Duty volcanologist Michael Rosenberg says an eruption occurred at Te Maari Craters, at approximately 1.25 pm.

Wednesday’s eruption, which lasted for about five minutes, is

the second eruption at Mount Tongariro this year. It previously erupted in August – the first time in more than 100 years.

Flights in and out of Taupo, Rotorua and Gisborne were cancelled on Thursday morning. It did not affect flights from Tauranga.

Smash delays flyover traffic

A man is lucky not to have been injured when the ute he was driving skidded into the path of a concrete truck on the Mount Maunganui flyover early Thursday.

The light utility truck was travelling towards Hewletts Road around 7.30am when police say it failed to stop for traffic, skidded across the road and hit an oncoming concrete truck.

Acting Sergeant Kane Hunia says the ute bounced off the concrete truck and hit the barrier on the left hand side. The crash blocked both lanes during peak hour but there were no injuries.

Man admits torching ex’s car A Whakamarama painter has admitted to setting fire to his partner’s home and car after attempts to rekindle their relationship failed. Norman Lawrence Gregory, 39, appeared in Tauranga District Court this week where he pleaded guilty to the charge of arson. According to the summary of facts, Gregory and his partner

had been in a relationship for a year when the two split in July.

Around a month later, Gregory attempted to reunite with his former partner, who was in a new relationship. When it failed he went to the victim’s Ohauiti home and set fire to a piece of newspaper outside the woman’s bedroom, before setting fire to the woman’s

car. Gregory was granted bail until a community and home detention report is prepared before his sentencing on December 18.

Children at Fairhaven School had a chance to compete against top athletes recently when a group including Paralympic cyclist Sue Reid visited the school.

The visit, which saw pupils play wheelchair rugby against the members of the Bay of Plenty Steamrollers team, try out Sue Reid’s racing cycle and hear her talk about her experience at the London Paralympic Games, came after the Year 5-6 class won a national competition for supporting the Paralympics.

Deputy principal Sandra Cross says the children had loved the experience and were really inspired by hearing how Sue – who was paralysed from the waist down after a cycling accident in 2003 – had given everything to finish fourth and eighth in her two events at her debut Paralympics.

Sue says she came away from the school inspired that the children knew so much about Paralympics and were focused completely on her achievement, rather than her disability.

On November 30 the pupils will be visited by Olympic bronze medallists Rebecca Scown and Juliette Haigh. Sandra says Fairhaven is known to be a sporty school and the visit has tied in closely with the Olympic theme of aspiring to be the best you can be. “(It will) inspire them to see that actually anybody can reach their goals if they have got that dream to actually be the best they can.”

Cricket world cup showdown Talk in the last week concerning the proposed improvements to Bay Oval in a bid to host some 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup fixtures has the cricket community buzzing.

Yet, the Bay has just seen cricket world cup matches of a different variety.

Australians, West Indians, Englishmen and Kiwis – of sorts – fought for cricket superiority as 16 Western Bay of Plenty schools in countries’ colours met at Mount Maunganui’s Blake Park on November 14.

BOP Cricket manager Mark Webb says all participating schools represented

a cricket-playing nation to give the tournament the real flavour of international cricket.

Pillans Point School, in Kenyan colours, defeated a Pakistan-inspired Bethlehem College selection by 21 runs to claim the Western Bay Mini World Cup trophy.

In Rotorua, the Eastern Bay of Plenty tournament equivalent was won by New Zealand in the form of Selwyn School, which knocked over the West Indies/ Ngongotaha Primary selection for 29 before cruising to the target inside seven overs.

The Mini World Cup was initiated by Bay of Plenty Cricket eight years ago to introduce Year 5 and 6 school pupils to the enjoyment of the game.

A kick in the right direction Rotorua is to host its first national women’s league fixture with the announcement of a clash between a combined Waikato/Bay of Plenty football side and Northern Football Federation at Rotorua International Stadium on Sunday, November 25.

Women’s development officer Lucy Mitchell says it’s a breakthrough for women’s football in the region.

“We want to make it a really big deal

and support the best female players in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty region – some of whom are ex or current young/junior Football Ferns.”

The side will host a second fixture against Auckland Football on December 2 at Links Avenue. Both games kick-off at 1pm and admission is free. Game days will be hosted before the kick-offs of both matches, showcasing the most talented female players the region has to offer.

The players from the Federation Talent Centre are likely the future of the WaiBop team, so will be well worth a look.

Young referee ruling the Bay If practice makes perfect then Mount Maunganui College’s Amon Rimene is well on his way to achieving his lofty goal of being the number one rugby whistler on the planet.

While most of his peers are passing and kicking the rugby ball, the affable, chatty 17-year-old has made refereeing his passion and is excelling at an early age, with his achievements and dedication recognised at last week’s Bay of Plenty Sports Awards.

Nominated by Mount college, Amon was a standout winner of the best student contribution to sport, with a list of successes in 2012 so long you almost need a cup of tea and a lie down after reading it.

Amon was Bay of Plenty touch referee of the year, officiating in 100 games, including the Maori nationals. He is off to the national touch champs in Hopuhopu in a couple of weeks and also whistled up a storm at touch’s interprovincial series and the youth nationals in Nelson.

But it’s in the 15-a-side code he is really stamping his mark, with an incredible 70 games of rugby refereed during this winter, including some Saturdays where he would pull on the white official’s jersey several times to help out across several grades.

He ref ’ed 21 games during the AIMS Games, including the final, at the national under-15 championships in Rotorua, the Northern Region Rollers Mills and Bay secondary schools.

When Amon isn’t out in the middle holding a whistle he’s camped out at Baypark Stadium during the ITM Cup, assisting with ground set-up, running errands, ref ’ing curtain-raisers or doubling as the Bay mascot.

“I knew I’d been nominated but to get it was a complete surprise.”

Among the hundreds of touch and rugby games he controlled this year, two stand out – Reporoa College’s Baywide secondary schools division two semi-final win over Katikati College which went into extra-time, and the following weekend’s final between Reporoa and Aquinas College.

“It’s been a pretty big season but those two games were real good because there was a lot on the line. To also get given my first colts (under-21) game to ref was a highlight.”

He uses touch as a way of sharpening his communication skills and has set his sights next year on a feast of colts fixtures and a couple of senior B games.

The big goal, however, is to work his way up the chain in the next decade to become the first New Zealander to referee a World Cup final.

“You’ve got to have big dreams otherwise you’ll never go anywhere. I remember Bryce Lawrence sending me a text saying ‘the harder you work, the luckier you get’ and that’s what I’m trying to do right now.”

Peter gets to repay Paul for once!

In a rare reversal of roles, council will get to repay ratepayers with the majority of this year’s rates surplus. $3.2 million will be factored into reducing next year’s rates requirement

and a further $500,000 will be applied to debt reduction. This $3.7 million surplus was generated by a mix of lower-than-budgeted operating costs, astute financial management generating savings on interest paid and other small factors.

There was a lively debate to arrive at this decision. The first resolution (that was lost) was that “the use of remaining surplus ($3.2 million after the $500,000 debt retirement) be determined by council as part of the consideration of the 2013/14 annual plan, subsequent to receipt of a report on strategic property funding.” The real intent of this was somewhat foggy and would possibly have addressed an issue at Te Tumu. It was then moved that the $3.2 million be sent back to ratepayers via next year’s annual plan, thereby reducing the rate requirement.

Some elected members argued against this, citing what they said were better ways of using the money for the benefit of ratepayers, such as increasing the risk management reserve account and reducing debt more. All of these points have validity. But for those of us supporting sending the money back to ratepayers as proposed the overriding consideration was that it is your money. As mayor Stuart Crosby said, rates are unfair and a ruthless, draconian form of taxation.

That’s true!

First rate

Even though there was a close split vote that finally passed this resolution, all arguments for and against presented sound financial ideas and it was just the acknowledgement that it is your money that carried the day. None of the financial issues facing future councils have gone away and will need to be faced on an annual basis and the ratepayers of those future times will have to pay for them. On the other hand, if council has been facing a deficit this year then next year’s ratepayers would have been called on to make it up so on balance I think this is the fairest solution to an unfair (ruthless and draconian) rating system.

The 2014/15 10-year plan forecast rates requirement is $111,249,000 up from 2013/14 requirement of $102,325,000 so there will need to be some very strong tummy muscles in future councils to continue to apply strong financial constraints on the big money-munching machine. A correction to the report in the daily print media about this. This money is not a ‘rates overcharge’ as they reported, it is a rates surplus as explained above that was not anticipated when the annual plan/budget was publicly consulted on.

Traffic emergencies

Cameron Road traffic problems are being brought to a head around the hospital. A new development is proposed on those vacant sites between 18th and 19th Avenue on Cameron Road opposite the hospital. Once again red tape is holding up the developer who wants to build a combination Medical Centre, Childcare and 20 unit Motel. To handle the traffic the pinchpoint from 17th Avenue southwards on

Cameron Road will need four laning and, joy, traffic lights at 18th Avenue. Of course there is a benefit in this to other developers down the back of the hospital, the hospital itself, the Historic Village and a general public benefit. Estimates for the work range around $600,000 and the task is to arrive at a fair and equitable way to divvy up who pays what. And quickly. The developer has been held up plenty now by the “process.”

Route K is the obvious long term solution to Cameron Road congestion and a clause deleted from the proposed resolution said it all. “Reduce attractiveness of the route (Cameron Road) for longer-distance vehicle trips.” But to make this work Route K needs more on- and off-ramps and the cost of these is huge.

In the next little while expect Cameron Road to be slower and slower as the traffic wizards install more and more traffic lights at intersections the length of Cameron Road. They have budgeted for these in the 10-year plan. I have asked that a more holistic view be taken over the length of Cameron Road in an attempt to get traffic flowing rather than what appears to be a “hopscotch” plan.

Co-governance

A lot of hoo ha over composition of a sub-committee to review the “Coastal Reserves Management Plan 1997”. Staff proposed a small sub-committee comprising three elected members and three iwi.

Terry Molloy and Larry Baldock enthusiastically supported this, saying that pretty soon the government would be legislating “co-governance” and we should get in ahead of this. However others considered that it was important that submitters to the process were considered by elected members only, who always had the final decision to make in any event. And of course there are other parties interest to consider as was pointed out, such as the hundreds of volunteers who turned out to clean up “Rena” oil as a demonstration of their attachment to the beach area.

Council’s organisational review

By the time you read this there should have been a public announcement of council’s review of its Council Controlled Organisations (CCOs) that run Bay Park Stadium, TECT Arena and the Aquatics operation. This is running parallel to a review of council’s organisation itself. It’s a major in anyone’s book. The CCO proposal is to combine TCVL, which runs Bay Park and TECT with TCAL, which runs the aquatics and includes Venues and Events (minus Baycourt). Thinking is more savings with economics of scale, more effective use of amenities and streamlining of operational costs.

Tired of all the work of maintaining a garden of roses – and the patchy results they got - Tom and Heather Slee decided it was time for a garden makeover.

It was out with the prickly roses and in with the easy-care bromeliads.

That was about 10 years ago and Tom says they have never looked back.

Now a card-carrying member of Bay of Plenty Bromeliad Club, Tom is always singing the plant’s praises to any gardeners – green thumbs or not.

Six months since the first work began on the Merivale Community Garden it will be officially opened with a family fun day on December 1.

Garden coordinator Deb McCarthy, who has driven the project since having the idea, says community support for the project is growing.

“It’s only been in the last months that I’ve started to get a lot more (of the) community involved and I’m sure that’s going to keep going.”

Before work began on the site six months ago, the section at the corner of Fraser St and Alverstoke Rd was bare, following the destruction of the state house by fire last year. Every week produce is harvested and delivered to

needy elderly in the area and given to residents attending Merivale Community Centre’s Wednesday budget clinic.

Deb says one of the most satisfying parts of the community garden project has been seeing people go on to set up their own vegetable gardens – including about 10 periodic detention helpers who have worked on the gardens. The 10am opening will include a blessing by a kaumatua and thank everyone involved including the sponsors. Tauranga Woodcrafters Guild project convenor Doug St George leapt at the chance to help out when he was approached by the council to restore the old gate for the Matheson farmhouse.

“I have done a couple of other gates but when I saw the state of the farmgate I knew it was absolutely beyond repair. Almost every piece of wood was hollow with rot, so we have reproduced the gate straight off the original.”

After playing with wood all his life, Doug saw it as a good challenge – and with the help of club member Mike McCarthy has recreated the gate ‘exactly as it was’ using traditional building techniques.

Built out of recycled timber, kindly

donated by a timber merchant, Doug says the trickiest part of the job was lining up holes in the 31 ‘broom handle’ rails to accommodate dowels.

The gate, which will be hung just prior the Levers Rd park’s official opening on December 6, will be joined by two smaller gates the club has restored for the site.

The two hectare Otumoetai Pa Historic Reserve, stretching down to the harbour, includes Maori and European historic elements.

The Otumoetai pa was the principal pa in the Tauranga area and home to 500 in the 1830s.

The Weekend Sun talks to Ngai Tamarawaho iwi about their involvement in the historic park next week.

Meanwhile, the guild is looking for a new home, with its Greerton’s clubrooms scheduled for demolition in 18 months, and wants to hear from anyone with property that could be suitable for a 150-200sqm workshop.

Tiny moves to baby tunes Matthew Strange was watching a Michael Jackson music video when his nine-month-old daughter Caitlyn starting frantically dancing and waving her arms to the music.

His young daughter’s sudden interest in the King of Pop sparked an idea Matthew put into fruition this week.

On Monday morning mothers gathered with their babies at Arataki

Community Centre for the first Baby Music Class - designed by Matthew to develop interaction between babies and their parents/caregivers through dancing, singing and play.

He says the goal was to start a creative group for mothers to share with their babies, after noticing a lack of baby-related classes in the Bay. “There wasn’t much out there for babies, there are a lot of things for toddlers.

“They (the mothers) all wanted to do something like this.”

On Monday, the babies moved and grooved along to a variety of songs, enjoying instruments and equipment including parachutes, bells and slides.

“I’ve been floating in and out and they all seem to be having a good time.”

The class is run by Janine Taylor, who Matthew says is a Tauranga icon for early childhood education.

Mother Karen Iremonger took her nine-month-old son Luca to the class and says it’s great to have something for babies.

“It’s really good, I’m glad to have this opportunity.

“He’s been bobbing out (to music) for a while.”

Sheena Hunter had fun singing and dancing with her 10-month-old son Riley.

“It’s something different – I’d definitely come back.”

Matthew says the ladies all loved the class and will return for round two next week.

The classes, costing $5 each time, will continue on Mondays at 11am until the end of the year.

Arataki kids stereotype busters Jilted adults, wearied and worried by age, belie the basic goodness of modern children at every opportunity.

With over 30 stalls already registered for the market, where stalls are run by kids who are fundraising or earning their Christmas money, there is going to be a great range of stocking fillers and bargains for all ages.”

Making the most of your herb garden Why I let the mint run wild and take over the strawberries and the raspberry patch I never know. I think now it’s time to rip it all out and do something with it besides new potatoes. There are other herbs I had forgotten about growing wildly and making their

presence felt by bursting into life: coriander, flat leaf parsley, and dill are all waiting for their moment in the spotlight to zest up a dull dish.

Some people have herbs in their garden and make little use of them. This week I have a quick way to use that mint, and a pork fillet dish that uses sorrel and mint to impart an interesting flavour.

First, let’s deal with the mint.

Gather up large bunches of it and strip all the leaves off the stalks until you have enough to fill an ice cream container.

Then, in a medium-sized stainless pot put: 1c malt vinegar ¾c brown sugar 1t ground cardamom 2 finely chopped red onions 2 granny smith apples, peeled and finely chopped.

Reduce for 10-15 minutes then add the mint and stir in.

Cook slightly for a few more minutes, then blend in a food

processor. Allow the mixture to cool and keep in a sealed container in the fridge until required. This is great with grilled meats over summer or mixed with Greek yoghurt for a quick dressing on pork kebabs or burgers.

If you chop up ½c each of coriander, mint, parsley and dill, add 2T avocado oil and the juice of one lemon, you’ll have fresh herb dressing that is stunning with a smoked salmon salad.

Rolled pork fillet with minted pineapple and sumac Serves four.

Ingredients 2 large pork fillets 3T honey 2T sumac powder Few small leaves of sorrel and mint Salt and pepper ½ fresh pineapple ½ cup crushed toasted macadamia nuts For the sauce 1c apple juice 2T soya sauce ¼c white vinegar 2 star anise 2 whole cloves 1T maize corn flour

Method Trim the pork fillet and cut lengthwise in butterfly cuts to open out and expand it into a schnitzel-type.

Cut trim into neat rectangles, about 4cmx8cm. Flatten slightly between two sheets of plastic bags. Gather up the trimmings. There should be about 1-2c minceable pork. Add most of the honey and 1½T sumac. Add salt, pepper and blitz in a processor. Spread mixture on to the flattened pork rectangle. Lay a long wedge of pineapple along it, then tear up some mint leaves and lay alongside. Roll the whole thing up, brush with warmed honey and roll in crushed macadamia

nuts. Wrap in tinfoil and chill until required.

For the sauce, crush the star anise and cloves and put everything except the cornflour into a small stainless pot and simmer for 10 minutes.

Strain and thicken with cornflour mixed with a little water. Cook the pork fillet in tinfoil, first in a pan for a few minutes, then in the oven on 180°C for 20 minutes. To serve, unwrap foiled fillet and brown under grill, then slice. Add a few sorrel leaves to the sauce just before serving.

from grapes predominately from the Awatere Valley. The grapes for this wine are all handpicked. Anna Flowerday says they make wines that they like to drink. I have to confess, even though I am not a huge fan of Sauvignon Blanc, I did really enjoy this wine.

The cooler and drier temperatures of the Awatere Valley result in a longer ripening season. The resulting wine has a different range of flavours to those produced from the Wairau Valley. Good citrus characteristics with white current and lemon grass coming through, with great texture, structure and minerality.

Brightening up children’s days Arranging toys and other things for children who have been uplifted from their homes and have nothing but the clothes on their back, is just one of many ways Tauranga woman Suzy Brown helps the younger residents of the community.

Suzy’s efforts have been recognised with a Bay of Plenty District Commander’s certificate of appreciation for her Tedz for the Kidz initiative.

Suzy Brown was presented with a Bay of Plenty Police District Commander’s certificate of appreciation.

The aim of the initiative is to provide toys for children who come under the radar of police and Child Youth and Family.

Suzy was given the award by Bay of Plenty Police district commander Glenn Dunbier, who presented the award on behalf of police, Child, Youth and Family and supporting organisations, at an informal gathering at the Child, Youth and Family office in Tauranga.

During his presentation Glenn says the numbers of crimes involving children stacks up.

“The Bay of Plenty District is one of the busiest places in the country. This is not good.”

Glenn says he is proud of the staff who deal with crimes involving children.

As well as sourcing toys for children, Suzy is a foster parent and also arranges for packages for children who are uplifted from their homes and are brought into care with only the clothes on their backs.

Prickle season is here It is prickle season again, with Onehunga weed (Soliva sessilis) invading our parks and gardens.

There are sprays to control it, but those sprays (pyridine herbicides) are persistent in soil and compost heaps, and can attack vegetables, flowers and trees. They also have health effects for people despite assurances otherwise.

Here are some alternatives.

Mow the grass less often.

Soliva doesn’t like being shaded. Dampness also keeps the prickles soft, which is why there were few prickles in the so-called summer of 2011-12.

You can’t water the lawn every day, but letting it grow longer retains moisture and benefits birds. Tolerance: children wearing shoes ignore prickles. Of

course, dogs don’t wear shoes and children lie on the grass.

However, the prickles are finished by mid-January. There is still lots of summer with no prickles.

Try less lawn!

Have more vegetables and flowers. Your children will eventually thank you for their herbicide-free world.

Close shave for cancer While men have been sprouting beards and moustaches around the Western Bay as part of the Movember prostate cancer fundraiser, Tauranga man Wally Nicoll is going against the trend.

Spurred on by a bet by a friend, he is having his beard shaved off on Friday to

raise funds for prostate cancer support, with the hope of raising $1000.

“Most people around town haven’t seen me without a beard for quite a few years, so it will be a bit of a change.”

Wally says aside from losing his beard briefly earlier in the year, it is four years since his last clean-shaven stint. “The hardest part is keeping the beard off for six months – that’s part of the deal.”

Wally says he will also miss his traditional Christmas fun of dressing up in a Santa

hat as the jolly red man. He says the fundraiser was his way of helping out after losing two friends to prostate cancer and seeing others fight it. Wally is going under the cut-throat razor at Greerton Barbers at 2pm on Friday November 23.

Rallying behind cause Waipuna Hospice is more than $4200 richer following the second Satara Charity Rally, earlier this month.

The rally and accompanying charity auction was born three years ago to raise funds for two Satara staff members who had children suffering from cancer. Sadly, both lost their battles, so the committee voted the proceeds of this year’s event should go to Waipuna Hospice. Plans are underway for a third rally, in Katikati in 2014.

Speedy students rally behind principal Loud chants, last minute vehicle renovations and safety wardens keeping an over-excited audience off the track. It was just like a normal speedway event – except it wasn’t.

In light of the looming SunLive Principals’ Challenge, Tauranga Primary School held its own speedway event this week.

The young fans cheered, chanted and screamed for their classmates as they ran around the school’s ‘mini speedway track’, competing for 30 minutes free time.

Principal representative Doug Maguire is one of 34 principals racing in the SunLive Principals’ Challenge on December 1 and says the support from the children is amazing.

“They’re totally revved up.

My kids have been doing a whole lot of (speedway) learning behind it, they just can’t wait.”

Each classroom created one ‘mini stock car’ made from a cardboard box and held up by shoulder straps.

One boy and one girl from each class were selected to run the two-lap race, with the fastest competitor winning their class the big prize.

Despite a few mechanical repairs, conducted with a long-arm stapler, the event ran smoothly and was enjoyed by all.

During the mini speedway the Baypark pace car, with Santa’s sprint car on the back, was parked in the middle of the field.

“That’s not the car I’m racing,” says Doug. “I’d probably kill myself in it.”

Baypark project manager Leona Smith was there to present the prizes and says it is awesome to see the children getting involved and supporting their racer.

“The kids are right behind Doug, are fully into preparing for the different activities we have going on, and are all very excited about the event.

“It’s wonderful to see the kids so interested.

“Speedway is really for the community to enjoy, we want them to be a part of it.”

She says Tauranga Primary School is the first to conduct their own speedway event, but the response from all the schools is really positive.

“It’s going to be a great night.”

Tauranga men urged to join ribbon ride from men who have rejected violence and want to share their messages of love and respect,” says Rob. “It’s a very powerful combination when delivered by tough looking guys who have served New Zealand, often in dangerous situations as peacekeepers in war zones. Now these men want to bring peace to our own backyard.”

The campaign is concerned with emotional, as well as physical, abuse.

Anyone can join the ride provided they have a license, a warranted bike with a minimum engine size of 250cc

and are willing to make the pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence towards women. Riders can join the ride or escort the riders into and out of Tauranga.

Tauranga anti-violence organisations are calling for men to don leathers and ride with the annual White Ribbon Motorcycle Ride today.

Organised by the Families Commission, the ride forms part of the November White Ribbon campaign to raise awareness of, and support for, anti-violence initiatives, specifically ending violence towards women.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Tauranga men to stand up and show they’re man enough to stop violence towards women,” says Tauranga Safe City’s Mark Mills.

“We want attitudes to change and

our local men to lead this change.”

About 14 women are killed in New Zealand each year, while there are more than 3500 convictions recorded against men each year for assaults against women. Police estimate about 20 per cent of the violence is reported, and say one in three women will experience partner violence at some point in their lives.

The riders are led by the Patriots Defence Force Motorcycle Club (made up of former and current members of the armed services) and Te Ahi Kikoha, (a Maori organisation of anti-violence campaigners).

The ride began in 2009 and now reaches more than 80 communities during November, stretching some

5000km from Bluff to Whangarei.

Additionally, 49 White Ribbon ambassadors, ranging from sporting stars Harry Ngata and Ruben Wiki to politicians Prime Minister John Key and Pita Sharples, are a part of the campaign.

Families Commission White Ribbon campaign manager Rob McCann says taking action can be as simple as men listening and taking seriously stories about violence.

An easy way to do that, and to influence other men, is by making it known that violent behaviour is unacceptable by wearing a white ribbon.

Transport matters Last week I spoke to The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.

While this is a national organisation, it has a very strong presence locally, which is good given the significant role of transport to our region. As I said at the event, it’s fundamentally important that we have groups such as CILT thinking hard about transport issues because as a small geographically isolated country that survives on exporting, our efficiency and productivity in getting goods to distant markets is a matter of economic life and death.

This is why the Government emphasises transport infrastructural investment so heavily and in August announced the largest ever National Land Transport Programme of $12.3 billion over the next three years.

Earlier this week, in Papamoa, I was involved in the launch of the latest ‘KiwiRAP’

road assessment results for New Zealand. Put simply, KiwiRAP is a tool for assessing the safety of our nearly 11,000 kilometres of state highway, identifying highrisk roads to help target safety improvements. The latest results show significant safety gains which are a top priority for me as a Minister particularly on high risk rural highways where there has been a drop of more than 15 per cent in fatal and serious crashes.

Run, run, run

As many will know, I am a keen runner and I’ve been doing a little training for a great annual event that happens this weekend: the Tauranga Trail Run at the TECT All Terrain Park on SH36.

Recess week

Because this week has been a recess week from Parliament, I have been able to spend a lot of time in the community. On Tuesday I had the deputy PM Bill English in town. Among the things we did, he particularly enjoyed meeting student leaders from all our local schools.

Later in the week it was a privilege to open Legacy Funeral’s new crematorium in Pyes Pa. While most of us perhaps don’t like to think about it too much, ensuring appropriate arrangements when loved ones pass away is a very important part of our affairs. This makes what Legacy Funerals does so significant.

Finally, it was great to celebrate some unsung community heroes for the Kiwibank Local Heroes Medal presentation. So many do so much without expectation of reward in our community that to recognise some of these stellar people warms the heart.

Vehicle exhaust emissions rule to be updated The Government has amended the 2007 Vehicle Exhaust Emissions Rule following public consultation, Associate Minister of Transport Simon Bridges has announced.

“It’s important for both people’s health and the safety of vehicles entering the fleet that this rule is updated. In general, the newer the vehicle, the higher the standard of safety features.”

The amended rule lifts standards for new vehicles from November 1, 2013, mirroring those agreed to in Australia (which will be adopting Euro 5, the current European standard that significantly reduces

harmful emissions from vehicles).

The amended rule also introduces more recent standards from the US and Japan, as alternative standards.

“These changes will ensure New Zealand’s new vehicles meet the world’s best exhaust emissions standards.”

For vehicles entering the fleet for the first time, the new rule also clarifies that proof of compliance with emission standards cannot be shown by a simple emissions test.

Compliance with a standard can now only be shown using documentation provided by an approved body. This had been an area of uncertainty for some importers.

The new rule also extends the current standards for used vehicles beyond the end of this year, as they would otherwise have expired.

Improved standards for used vehicles were recently introduced – in early 2012 for petrol vehicles and in 2010 for diesel vehicles – and will be reviewed again in 2014.

“In addition, and in response to comments made in submissions, I have asked my officials to look at what we can do in the lead up to the 2014 review to reduce emissions from vehicles already on our roads.”

The new rule will be in place from 1 January 2013.

Jane says the therapy is good for dogs of all sizes, ages, including puppies and the privacy is good for dogs that are socially challenged.

After the session, Jane showered me and dried me off. It all felt good.

At ease

Then it was Ady’s turn. She looked even more apprehensive than me. Jane did a wonderful job of putting Ady at ease in the pool. Once I saw she was in the pool, I decided to jump back in, despite just being nicely washed and dried – and did I care that Jane usually only has one dog at a time? Not likely.

Being ever so helpful, I leaped and thrashed

around in the pool, without a jacket, while Jane was trying to give Ady some meaningful attention. There were balls and toys to retrieve and I made a complete nuisance of myself until it was time for everyone to get out.

Bomber time

The boss decided my pool time was up when I started doing bombs from the side.

This is a great asset for dog owners of the western Bay and well worth a visit, especially if your dog is recovering from injury or surgery or is an old timer who deserves some special treatment.

Thanks to Jane for having us and putting up with the overenthusiastic ones in the group.

It was great to meet her two massive Leonberger dogs, Rosie and Tawa.

And, just to dispel the rumours, we did not chase Jane’s sheep. We just followed to see where they were running to. Turns out only as far as the big cows with no sense of humour. At which point our curiosity was satisfied and we ran back to the car. Quickly.

Garage sale for child poverty

After living in Dubai for 10 years Mount Maunganui Primary School student Meela Scholmann realised there was something she needed to do to help children living in poverty.

Since meeting her best friend in Dubai, who died at a young age, Meela, 10, decided to help children living in poverty by organising a garage sale.

On December 1 items collected by room 14 at Mount Maunganui Primary School will be on sale at the Trash n’ Treasure Charity Fundraiser.

All money raised will be donated to Tauranga charities supporting child poverty, such as Tauranga Food Bank.

Meela raises money every month at Arataki

Children’s Market and she says with the festive season fast approaching now is the time to help children in need.

“We realise if we help kids like that maybe we could sort of make them happy if we do it around Christmas time.”

Following in her mother’s footsteps and realising how lucky children living in New Zealand are, Meela began helping charities too.

“I thought it was a good way to help people.”

Donation boxes will be available on the day for people to support the cause.

“If they aren’t available on the day, they can drop in to room 14 at Mount Maunganui Primary School and give it to our teacher.”

There will also be face painting and a Talent for Charity show performed by Year Six students. Gates open 8-11am.

Te Puke –business beyond bypass The future of downtown Te Puke is in the town’s hands, says regional business leader Mark Boyle, who is urging everyone interested in planning a vibrant future to get involved.

Mark, the Te Puke Economic Development Group head, is holding a special meeting on Wednesday to begin planning for the town’s future after the Tauranga Eastern Link opens and he wants everyone affected to attend. “All we are doing is getting people together to say we are only about three years out from the Tauranga Eastern Link being completed and we have to be thinking about the future now.”

The meeting will discuss the changes and establish a town centre working group that will gather ideas and drive Te Puke’s response. Key issues to be considered are the form and function wanted for Jellicoe St after the bypass opens, and how to develop the Te Puke business centre into a destination.

Mark expects reasonable volumes to continue on Jellicoe St and wants the community to think about how

they would like the road to work so they can lobby the New Zealand Transport Agency for the right result.

“The second part of it is what is the theme, the product and service offering of Te Puke and … how do we make that something interesting and desirable that makes Te Puke a destination.”

The location of Te Puke so close to Tauranga and a short distance from Rotorua and Whakatane, offers many opportunities to establish the centre as a destination with a unique offering.

Mark says many people are unsure what the bypass will mean for the town, but it is not accurate to describe it as “concern” about the future. Instead he describes it as a great opportunity.

Despite the kiwifruit industry’s hardships he says the town is robust and the chance to redevelop the town centre offers a great opportunity to diversify the economy. The meeting will be held at Te Puke Memorial Hall’s Settlers Lounge on Wednesday from 11am-12pm. Details: 573 6772

Stop blaming, find your solution If the Kohanga Reo initiative had been born of genuine passion, vision and determination, would it have been dropped at the first perceived hurdle ie not enough money?

Shifting blame, as usual, isn’t enough.

We can’t solve every problem with money. It will run out again. It’s like that.

It’s time Tariana Turia showed some Maori pride, put away her begging bowl, took responsibility, and made the effort to consider other possible reasons

for the failure . There will be some maybe even as obvious as the possibility that not all Maori want that dream.

Next, get up and find some creative solutions, ways to raise funds yourselves. Even borrow from other iwi, anything, but get inspired, get started, and DO something to save your dream!

Other people have to do this, so why shouldn’t you ? Read a good book on motivation .... Failing all that, bury the Kohanga Reo and say a karakia.

Mean spirited attack

Maori need assistance

On 2 November you published an article titled “Shared Values Unite Our Cultures” in which local kaumatua Colin Bidois extended the hand of friendship and reconciliation and urged us all to focus on what we share in common rather than on our differences.

It was therefore sad and disappointing to read in your issue of 16 November a mean-spirited attack on Mr. Bidois implying that his comments were not sincere and that he had a totally different agenda.

Those allegations are completely false. Mr Bidois is a man of the highest personal integrity with a lifetime of service to the community. His wisdom and insight and mana are widely respected throughout Tauranga Moana and beyond.

There have been many tragic occurrences in our history between Maori and Pakeha. It is an encouraging sign of our developing maturity as a nation that we are facing up to these challenges and that we are attempting to rectify them.

It is not always an easy road to travel but it is the right road to be on.

So let us focus on the many important values that Mr Bidois reminded us that we share and move forward together in a spirit of mutual goodwill to build a better future for the generations to come.

There is a possible way to run train services without NZ Rail being responsible for providing extra services but providing additional income for them.

I would call it Clip On Rail.

A boutique passenger service not providing all the services expected of a conventional rail. This would be achieved by a stand alone company being responsible for organising passengers, ticketing and on board management on the carriage.

It would be no different than a bus with one employee taking charge. A carriage (or carriages) could be hired from NZ Rail or the private company to provide them to conform to normal standards. In other words from the railways point of view it would be simply another freight job! Like taking someone’s container on board.

NZ Rail might even set up the company themselves.

No obligation to provide any services either end is the key for NZ Rail, exactly like a bus.

Roger Bailey is right when he says grass roots Maori need assistance right now and well into the future. Only when they become better parented without abuse, respectful and self disciplined and taught social skills, are better educated, and informed and taught jobs skills before leaving school will many of them lift themselves up from the low level they are now at.

Maori rate highly in our statistics for unemployed and goal numbers.

The lives of many unemployed consist of drinking, taking drugs, parties, sex and violence along with criminality.

Often young Maori men form relationships with young solo mother’s of the same ethnicity who also live dysfunctional lives. Research shows of the 10 small children murdered in New Zealand each year the majority are committed by young Maori male partners with limited education often from abusive homes with no biological connection and emotional attachment to the children they murder.

The mother has often started having children at an early age which are not loved and cherished.

She also often comes from an abusive background and is poorly educated.

It is time Maori leaders stood up and said “it is time we took responsibility for these problems instead of leaving them to the Government to deal with and the taxpayers of New Zealand to keep doing the paying”.

Tit for tat, lack of logic In the opening sentence of his letter Robin Bell displays a lack of logic by saying “I’m not going to get into a tit for tat...” and then proceeds to do exactly that. His muddled thinking is propounded by equating the circumstances in India, North America and Africa with those conditions existing in New Zealand and comparing the activities of British forces with those of the U.S. Government against their native people. His observation of the effects of ignoring history is scarcely original.

He fails to acknowledge that Britain’s initial involvement in the country was at the behest of the Northern Tribes who saw Britain’s intervention as preferable to that of the French, the increasing lawlessness in the north and the tribal conflicts threatening the very survival of the race.

Finally I believe that the Lancashire children would have preferred ‘crawling under looms’ than to being killed and eaten as their fate may have been in New Zealand.

Put Novopay problem where it belongs the ministry advised they would not be paying for the extra hours expended by staff attempted to resolve the problem. Read ‘oops we never even considered there would be problems and didn’t even factor such a contingency into the contract and guess what we really don’t give a toss.’

As for the banks there will be Christmas bonuses all round profits will be through the roof with bank fees for insufficient funds, stopped cheques and thousands of automatic payments and direct debits defaulting.

The ongoing effect will impact everybody’s credit rating as much of the banks processes are software driven - have you given that some thought your credit standing destroyed overnight.

My solution: class action for liquidated damages against the ministry that will focus their attention. Consider this, why the employee should be inconvenienced for the department’s incompetence put the problem and onus where it belongs. Find a QC, spread the word. I’m completely serious.

The novopay debacle has astounded me on a number of levels, one that the employees continue to put up with it and the incompetence of the ministry in dealing with it.

If there is one thing that gets people angry, it’s when you have issues around money especially when it is no fault of your own, money is the energy our lives run on, lack of it impacts across so many facets of our day to day lives.

Typical of government departments they lack the nous to survive in the real world and believe everything they are told.

At the first hint of trouble the minister should have stepped up to the plate, advised talent 2 to pay all employees an average of their last three pays and continue to do so until all else resolved 100% right 100% of the time. Thus the supplier faces the hit, the inconvenience the penalties and the problems not the poor long suffering teachers.

But what beggars belief is the fact that

R.McGuiness claims (November 9) that the English Treaty is a false document.

The original document is in the National Archives in Wellington complete with Hobson’s signature, his official seal and 39 Maori signatures. It is clearly not false.

R.Paterson claims that part-Maori should get part-payments from Treaty settlements.

Treaty payments go to tribes not individuals. If tribes choose to treat all descendants equally, good for them. The taxpayer pays nothing extra, and the compensation is less than 10% anyway.

Dr Graham Cliff claims that privileges for Maori is deliberate inequity, but accepts much greater privileges for Pakeha. For example Pakeha students have the privilege of being taught mostly by Pakeha teachers.

It is hypocritical of people to protest about privileges for Maori and ignore the much greater privileges enjoyed by Pakeha in a Pakeha dominated society.

Some recent letters (November 16) deserve comment.

Mike von Lande claims that all Treaty settlements have been achieved through quasi-legal fraud. He has no evidence for this.

Roger Bailey claims that grass roots Maori are not getting the assistance from Treaty settlements that they should be getting. He has no evidence for this.

Cedric Sutherland claims that the Maori elite are creaming the taxpayer. He has no evidence for this. Maori leaders are leaders because they are the best available.

Richard Prince leaves out important points in his comments on the Battle at Rangiaowhia. According to James Cowan (page 355) Maori at Rangiaowhia were trapped in a whare karakia (Michael King) and shot when they tried to escape unarmed.

The whare was set on fire by a Pakeha soldier and all inside perished. Richard Prince is quibbling over details.

Critical failure In Faulkner’s Corner, (16 Nov) he confirms that the only person our elected councillors employ, the CEO has the sole responsibility of not only how the organisation is run, but also in developing the draft of proposed reorganisation to do this, after consultation with staff members who may have relevant contributions to make covering items that may not have been thought of.

I am concerned that in a democracy, the representatives that citizens of Tauranga have elected, and more importantly citizens themselves, apparently have no part to contribute to this planning regarding the manner in which the requirements of the Act are to be applied to them, nor being able to evaluate past strengths and weaknesses.

This seems to indicate a critical failure in the governance by our elected councillors, as citizens do not know if they are seen by our elected leaders as just passive beneficiaries, or as actual contributors to our city.

Restructure at last Weekend Sun 16 November “Council Cuts”.

At last the plunge has been taken to carry out a restructure of TCC staff. Numerous ratepayers have been requesting this for years. Interim CEO Leigh Auton should be congratulated.

Mayor Crosby supports the restructure, but is on record saying in the past that TCC was not overstaffed so restructuring was unnecessary ! I note that council-owned organisations are included in the review. Does this include ratepayer subsidised Priority One, Smart Growth, Tourism Bay of Plenty and Art Gallery ? TCC may find that some staff leave of their own accord because - 1. They know they will be found out and have been collecting their salary but grossly underperforming. 2. Are diligent, productive but are not prepared to face the hassle of restructuring.

This major restructure will be tough on all staff. If from now on carried out every three years will be far less traumatic.

45 fulltime staff to go is hard but a good start.

Private companies, corporations have been restructuring regularly for years to keep salary expense down, so why not local councils ?

Local artists heating up in time for summer It’s always a good day when new local albums arrive; I picked up a couple of interesting ones yesterday from the hallowed offices at No.1 The Strand.

One I’ve been hearing about for a while now as, like just about any album round here made on a budget, it has been in the works for more than a year. It’s the debut from the Shirleybyrds and is being launched next week.

I haven’t really had a chance for a good listen yet - it was only yesterday when I grabbed the CDs - but the

cursory blast in the car as I was returning to the calming lawns of the Watusi Country Club (now with added animal shelter) was enough for me to put next Tuesday’s launch firmly on my calendar.

The Shirleybyrds is an outfit you might have seen playing somewhere around town as a duo, though the album is a full band outing. It is Shirley Ryder and Graeme Hardaker, both of whom, in the duo at least, play guitar and sing (with some added bongo drums). Shirley also writes and has accumulated quite an impressive bag of songs over the past few years. The duo has been on local radio and you can find one of its sessions on recording studio Soundtree’s internet TV channel (just follow the links from the Soundtree website).

Graeme, of course, is a multiple offender on the Tauranga music scene, having been around since the early days of punk when he was part of local bad boy band the Red Light Nuns. Since then he has sung and played with more bands than most of us have had vodka martinis, including even a stint drumming with Dr Jazz. But he’s a rocker at heart, a man with a tremendous voice – the Bay’s Eric Burdon perhaps – and has a fine way with a guitar.

I’ll be reviewing the self-titled CD next week but don’t let that stop you heading down to Drivers Bar (in the 11 Ave Plaza) next Tuesday (November 27) at 7.30pm, when the Shirleybyrds’ll be joined by drummer Paul Higgins (Hard To Handle), keyboard player Neil Pepper (Elton John) and bassist Wayne Melville (Torch Songs),

Bob McNeill, folk album winner. a fine collection of musicians if ever there was one. They will be playing a selection of the album’s bright 60s poppy songs. It should be fun and, to make it even more fun, there’s no admission charge.

And there’s another gig on next week, which should be a winner for anyone of a folky persuasion, with yet another tripleTui Award winner coming to town. Funny, when Tami Neilson played in Katikati a couple of weeks back I thought “It’s not too often you get people playing in Tauranga who’ve won three Tui Awards” (for best country album in her case). Now, with a concert from Penman/McNeill, we have another one in the shape of Bob McNeill, who has won three NZ Music Awards, all for best folk album.

McNeill’s musical and songwriting style is a hybrid of the Celtic music of his native Scotland and the American new folk and Americana styles. The Dominion Post compared him to Jackson Brown, James Taylor, Luka Bloom and Doug MacLean; New Zealand Musician compared his songwriting to Bruce Springsteen and Mark

Also of interest if you fancy a drive out to Waihi is the ongoing Waihi Beach Battle of the Bands, which has been attracting some seriously good bands from Tauranga and the Mount. Last week saw The Elements and Ant Wars Underground competing (unsuccessfully, unless they win the online public vote) while on November 29 Enercia and Nine Mile Stone will be hitting the stage.

I haven’t heard of any of the five bands playing on 22, though the Twisted Daisies and Captain Corrupt both sound like fun. The fifth and final heat is on December 6, each night starting at 8pm with a $5 cover charge.

Kiwi star returns for home tour It’s been 20 years since Greg Johnson made his mark on the New Zealand music scene with his breakthrough single ‘Isabelle’.

Since then, the Kiwi singer has continued his success with a number of triumphs, including two TUI NZ music awards, eight top-20 albums and a long line of hit singles such as ‘Don’t Wait Another Day’, ‘Liberty’, ‘Save Yourself ’, ‘I Got Opinions’ and more.

Now, to celebrate two decades of music and the release of his 10th studio album ‘Exits’, Greg is returning from his home in Los Angeles and hitting the road with a full electric band to perform his trademark melodic and comedic shows this month – arriving in Tauranga on November 23.

Greg says he’s looking forward to returning to New Zealand to tour.

“I’ve never been more amped about getting on the road and being back among my whanau again.

“It’s been almost two years since I toured NZ and that was an acoustic band, so this time we’re kicking it up to a five piece with drums and the full noise.

“I’ll be playing a number of tunes we’ve never done live before and of course the highlights from 20 years’ worth of albums as well.”

The band members on tour with Greg are Ted Brown, Wayne Bell, Ben King and Mark Hughes.

So why watch it? Well, it’s the animation (and a few laughs and a couple of nifty characterisations, particularly Julie Walters’ batty witch). But mainly it’s the animation. The landscapes, the camera moves (it must look great in 3D!), Princess Merida’s hair, the animals, all are astonishing; a new benchmark for the craft. Kids’ll probably dig it too.

the bright side, the film is nicely made: it looks good and makes efficient use of its shocks. And the alien itself – only infrequently seen before the finale – is surprisingly effective. Nonetheless, the unremittingly derivative (and entirely predictable) nature of just about everything does tend to detract.

Sleepless Night (Nuit Blanche) eluded me when it came out a couple of months ago but it’s well worth checking out. It centres – as so many French policiers do – on a dirty cop, Vincent, whom we meet as he and his partner violently boost a big bag of cocaine. This proves, in retrospect, to be a mistake. Vincent is recognised and the mob kidnaps his daughter to encourage the coke’s return, which is somewhat trickier than expected as it turns out that everyone wants the bag. It’s a tense, exciting action thriller, a continuous series of ever-more-complex chases around a single huge nightclub. Very impressive.

Ted is a rather weird, very sweary comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and a talking bear. It is the brainchild of Seth MacFarlane (of TV’s Family Guy fame) who also voices the titular teddy.

Set-up is that a childhood Christmas wish made the bear talk and they both became instant celebrities. But now, 30 years later, no one cares. It’s basically a film about growing up, something that Wahlberg has to face before he loses hot squeeze Mila Kunis. It goes pretty much by the numbers, ace in the hole being the foulmouthed and totally inappropriate Ted and some fine underplaying from Wahlberg. If this tickles your funny-bone (people I spoke to had mixed views) you’ll love it. , which had a brief Good For Nothing cinema run here, is truly a unique thing: a genuine Kiwi western. A “Pavlova” western, as writer director Mike Wallis modestly calls it, giving due homage to Sergio Leone and other Italian spaghetti western directors. Echoes of those films are apparent but shot through with a laidback deadpan Kiwi sensibility, which initially takes a little adjusting to, as do the sometimes dodgy accents. But after a while you settle into the unhurried rhythm and the story of a young Englishwoman (Inge Rademeyer) heading west, only to be kidnapped during a bank robbery by a taciturn cowboy (Cohen Holloway). He just wants to “poke her good” but has impotence issues. It certainly looks the bizzo, all sweeping open landscapes and big skies, though the pacing may frustrate some.

of Pixar sequels, seemed only to confirm sad subjugation by the House of Mouse.

And so it proves. The slide towards cheap sentimentality and tweenie pandering so rampant on the Disney Channel - most obviously heard here in the ghastly aspirational songs - signals we are a long way from Toy Story (or even Up).

Mark Brookfield gala in your diary Preparations are underway for Brookfield Primary School’s Summer-Fest Twilight Gala, to be held next door to the school in Sydenham Botanic Park on December 14.

Event organiser Lisa Adams says the gala will have plenty to offer, including entertainment provided by the students, professional artists, a traditional hangi, candy floss, barbecue food, face painting, spot prizes and assorted rides, including a merry-go-round and horizontal bungy.

A raffle, with prizes including fuel and power vouchers, a fishing trip, a chance to swim with dolphins, a free WOF, massages and beauty baskets, will be drawn on the night.

Raffle tickets will be for sale at the school office and from outside Brookfield New World from November 26-30. The gala will run from 5-8pm.

Janneke has brought challenges and a new vitality to the choir, introducing jazz into its repertoire, as well as a Jewish love song and traditional Christmas numbers.

Janneke graduated with a Bachelor of Music majoring in composition from Waikato University. She has shown an enthusiasm for singing from a young age and loves directing the choir – made up of singers of all ages.

‘Brave New World’ will be a must-attend for all lovers of superbly played piano, especially when accompanied by fifty five dedicated musicians, including eight students, which together make up the Bay’s regional community orchestra, Bay of Plenty Symphonia.

Justus Rozemond, an accomplished performer of the violin and clarinet, specialising in bass and contrabass clarinet, was engaged as the orchestra’s music director in the first quarter of this year.

Prior to that, he conducted the Taranaki Youth Orchestra and was active as a conductor in the Wellington area where he performed with his own AHEM! ensemble. He is a regular guest conductor with the Kapiti Concert Orchestra, while every year he conducts the NZ Composers’ Association workshop in Nelson. As the conductor of contem-

porary music groups Gate Seven and the SMP ensemble, he has premiered numerous premieres of NZ works.

During the 2007 Asia-Pacific Arts Festival he conducted the Contemporary Music Ensemble Korea with the premier of Dylan Lardelli’s ‘Sent into Silence.’

The symphonia has evolved from humble beginnings as a night school class, becoming Tauranga Concert Orchestra in 1975 and in May 2005, the name was changed to Bay of Plenty Symphonia indicative of the fact that the orchestra was drawing players by this time from Katikati to Whakatane.

Invite to view Bay’s largest cruise liner The largest cruise liner to visit Tauranga’s shores this summer will arrive this month.

Residents are being offered the chance to view the Voyager of the Seas up close during its first visit to the Port, as part

of a fundraiser for Waipuna Hospice.

Staff from local House of Travel branches are inviting people to get a close up view of the cruise liner from the upstairs lounge at Mount Ocean Sports Club, and farewell it as it leaves the Bay.

Paddling full steam ahead Sport Bay of Plenty’s series of fun introductions to water sports continues next week with a handful of activities suitable for all ages and abilities.

On Saturday anyone wanting to experience the fun and exhilaration of paddling your heart out with waka ama can try their hand at outrigger canoe paddling with members of Hoe Aroha Waka Ama Club at Waikorire, Pilot Bay, from 10am-12pm. Play in the Bay’s water theme continues on Sunday with a blind sailing have-a-go experience with Elements Water Sports at Kulim Park, from 1-4pm. It offers the

Striking the right waves this weekend It will be a case of paddle power on Tauranga’s inner harbour this weekend as waka and stand-up enthusiasts take to the water for a fun family day out.

The final event of the five-race Kotahi Ki Te Hoe – Tauranga Moana

Harbour and Ocean Series is on this Saturday, featuring three different forms of paddle racing. Starting from 10am participants can enter the 14km waka and surf ski, the 8km stand-up paddle race or the 4 x 200m stand-up relay.

Organiser Hiria Rolleston, from East Coast Paddlers, says the event caters to all individuals and club teams wanting to get out on the water.

“It’s to showcase what we have available here for paddlers in the Bay – to get people coming here to paddle.”

“It’s a winter series to keep people paddling through the winter and get them ready for summer.”

Hiria says this is the first time all the paddling disciplines have come together for an event of this type in Tauranga, with clubs from Auckland, Raglan, Whakatane and Rotorua coming to Tauranga to compete.

“Mount Surf Club has been representing very well and are currently in the lead for club participa-

tion. This is a great competition for clubs with some fantastic prizes.”

A healthy way to have fun with friends and family, stand-up paddle boarding works the core and trunk of the body, increasing muscle power and stability.

Hiria says the 200m paddle board relay is a fun way for family members to get active together on the water.

“Stand-ups are easy to manage and you can get the whole family out there.

“People just getting into it can get involved – it’s been going off.”

More than 120 entrants are expected to participate in the event, which starts with registration at Tauranga Yacht Club at 10am. The stand-up paddle board race starts at Banks Avenue at 11am.

The event will be rounded off with a hangi and prizegiving, followed by an after-party at Cornerstone Pub.

Saturday’s family day out will showcase what’s available for paddlers in the Bay.

Can the Bible be trusted?

Can the Bible be trusted? This is an important question.

foundation for any doubt that the Scriptures have come down to us substantially as they were written has now been removed. Both the authenticity and the general integrity of the books of the New Testament may be regarded as finally established.”

Then why do people still raise doubt? Could it be that it’s more a question of what people want to believe than of the evidence? Some don’t believe in miracles – so obviously they see the Bible as unreliable.

Some don’t want to believe in Jesus – so they will try to ‘rewrite’ the way we view the Bible. But if we look at the evidences, there’s a surprising amount going for this book!

So, what does it mean? Be comforted that faith matters! You really can trust God in hard times! He will never abandon you, and He does hear your prayers! Why not talk to Him now?

Is our faith just a myth, or is it in something real?

Many who study the Bible’s reliability get a bit of a shock. For example, in ‘The New Testament Document: Are They Reliable?’ F.F. Bruce points out that “…we have about 9 or 10 good copies of Caesar’s Gallic War, 20 copies of Livy’s Roman History...”.

The second most documented ancient work is Homer’s Iliad (643 manuscript copies). Who killed Jesus?

We know from Scripture it was the Roman soldiers who physically crucified Jesus, the Lamb of God, on a Roman cross.

But who was responsible for the fact that He was crucified?

Firstly, you and I are responsible for Christ’s death because God sent His Son to die in our place, as the propitiation for our sin, because as Paul says in Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”.

God who is love is also the God who is holy and just and righteous.

In His holiness and justice He must judge sin and He must punish sin, otherwise He would not be holy and just.

The punishment for mankind’s sin is death and only a holy sacrifice could be offered for sin. Because mankind could not redeem themselves, God sent His only begotten Son to die in our place, to pay the price for our sin, to ransom us and to

redeem us. In that sense, His death is a consequence of our sin.

Secondly, God the Father was responsible for the death of His Son. John says in 1 John 4:10 that “God loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins”.

Isaiah 53:6 tells us that God has laid on Christ the iniquity of us all.

He says in verse 10 of Isaiah 53 that it was “the will of the Lord to crush Him; He has put Him to grief; when His soul makes an offering for guilt”.

Thirdly, Jesus was responsible for His own death.

He declares in John 10:18 about His life that “no one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of My own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again”.

So, who was responsible for the death of Jesus? Certainly not the Jews – to suggest that is antiSemitic nonsense. Definitely you and me. Christ’s death was not the consequence of mob rule, but part of God’s plan of redemption, pre-figured in the Old Testament sacrifices, offerings and feasts.
