Because you never know when the highly resourced NZ Government will be listening in. The RR team discovered this listening device, we’ll call it a bug, concealed in our spy bunker this week: Bear in mind, the resources of the SIS consist of a briefcase* with a titty magazine and three Maketu pies.

Or perhaps that’s a bit harsh on the excellent Maketu pies.

Maybe they were just Big Ben. Regardless, the discovery of a spy’s briefcase inadvertently lost in the eighties sums up the ineptitude and lack of resources of our security agencies.

To think they have the resources to listen in, hack the communications, of a wide range of ordinary New Zealanders – or that they’d want to, is laughable.

Remember the greatest ever threat to NZ security is not you – the little old reader minding your own business and the worst you’ve ever done is probably park in Spring Street for five minutes without buying a parking ticket. No, the worst threat to our country was the filthy French spies who snuck in with their Zodiac and bombed the bejesus out of the Rainbow Warrior, right under our noses. Our spies had no idea, and not only didn’t detect the plot, but couldn’t catch le basteurds.

Ruthless spy nation?

Worse, our inept government of the time allowed them, even after conviction, to be let go and treated as heroes back in France.

Now I ask you, is this the track record of a ruthless, powerful spy nation? More like the John Keystone Cops.

But, hey, just in case you believe the hype of the panic merchants, here’s a way to fly under the GCSB radar: You will need to develop a code system so you can hatch plots without the GCSB and spies knowing what you are planning.

Just ask Team Emirates NZ about the spying from the American camp. They’ve had to adopt code words for some of their sailing manoeuvres so the dastardly Americans can’t understand the team tactics.

Just this week, yachting commentator Peter Lester revealed the sailing team have a range of phrases which denotes a certain action aboard the boat.

“Frosty Boy” is the code word for a type of turn around a mark.

But please keep that to yourself, we mustn’t let the Americans learn it.

“Meat and Potatoes” which Dean Barker was heard to announce, according to Lester, is a code phrase for a special tactical manoeuvre aboard the Emirates boat which is so top secret, he could only share it with a few trustworthy people – such as the several million television viewers across the world.

Other than that, it remains a top secret instruction between you and I, and the Emirates TNZ camp.

Or maybe, it was Dean Barker letting the catering team know his preference for dinner that night.

You dastardly terrorists

Another code word the RR research team picked during a recent race: “There’s a puff coming”. This translates to: “Rob Waddle, get your togs on.”

“Holy S****!!” is a code phrase for “the bows of our boat are doing 40 knots, 10 feet under the water and Rob Waddle has taken up swimming.”

You at home in Spy Victim Land can lessen the impact of the GCSB laws, by developing your own code. You can then go subversively about your life, planning all sorts of dastardly, terrorist acts against the Government, its enforcement agencies, and generally be a happy little security threat all of your own.

Here are some ideas for your special code, but don’t tell anyone, or it won’t be secret any more. Some of these are adapted from episodes of Get Smart: Class A security = Super-secret case rating that means it can only be discussed under the Cone of Silence.

Driving against disaster A $30,000 trailer equipped to care for up to 50 people in a disaster situation will soon be available to Katikati residents.

The emergency trailer, now under construction in Christchurch, was purchased by Katikati Red Cross following a generous donation from the late Dorothy Barratt.

Dorothy, who died about eight years ago, donated the funds through her estate, with the instruction they be used for the benefit of the wider community.

Red Cross Branch chairman Ian MacErlich says the trailer, expected to arrive in October, will form a key part of the community’s emergency response plan.

“It will have food, stretcher beds, bedding, a generator and lighting that will enable up to 50 people to be looked after for up to 72 hours under emergency conditions.

“Red Cross is now seeking volunteer team members, who after training, will be able to set up the accommodation and care for displaced persons in the event of a Katikati civil emergency. Those interested in this project may include senior college students, those with experience in caring for people and those who are keen to help,” says Ian. Last Friday Katikati Red Cross members viewed another identical trailer brought to the town by Northland’s Red Cross emergency manager Graeme Langford.

wide range of equipment, similar trailers have already been used in Seddon and Wellington following the July earthquakes, he says.

Katikati Red Cross project coordinator Peter MacKay says the trailer is designed to be used for people who have been evacuated from their homes and need to take shelter in community buildings, such as halls or schools, not tents.

The Katikati Four Wheel Drive Club has volunteered to tow the trailer and arrangements are being made to house it near the centre of town.

Home buyers warned to test for P Western Bay of Plenty home buyers are being warned to ask the right questions when viewing properties to avoid hidden dangers.

The number of homes contaminated by methamphetamine is on the rise and is becoming an increasing issue for the real estate industry.

In 2012, police busted seven methamphetamine labs in Tauranga, two in Mount Maunganui, one in Katikati and one in Te Puke.

Real Estate Institute New Zealand chief executive Helen O’Sullivan says potential home buyers should ask about the rental history of a property.

“They should ask if the owner has ever had issues with the police or if the property has, at any stage, been decontaminated for methamphetamine.”

Such homes show no physical signs of contamination, she says, and the only sure way of knowing is by conducting a chemical test (costing about $100).

“There are really very few physical signs,” says Helen.

“If you stumble into a P-lab you will know you are in one – but to tell if P has been smoked or made in a property is really hard to do.”

Helen says the biggest issue is when a home has once housed a P-lab unknown to police.

“Where the police have actually busted a property and a P-lab, then that is brought to the attention of the owner and that generally makes its way onto a council LIM report.

“To get it removed, the owner has to provide proof they have had the property decontaminated and [have been] given

Helen says if people have concerns about a property with a rental history, they should enquire to see a property inspection history.

“If they didn’t have a programme of regular inspections in place and there had been a tenant who has left in a hurry then it would be well worth asking whether or not the owner would consider getting the property tested and make those results known to prospective buyers.”

Helen says legally a real estate agent has to disclose all material information they know about a home and not hold back any information passed onto them from the vendor.

“If purchasers are concerned they can make an offer that is conditional on the home being tested for methamphetamine contamination.”

Western Bay of Plenty area commander Inspector Clifford Paxton encourages people

to report any criminal activity, including if they suspect a home is being used to cook P. He says the key issues are the impact on the occupants of the house at the time the methamphetamine is being manufactured, especially children, and the impact on neighbours.

“The flow on effect is the impact these houses have on unsuspecting occupants’ long term health impacts and the financial impact of cleaning up.

“If you come across a methamphetamine lab, leave the area immediately, do not touch anything, do not smoke or use your cell phone.”

Then people then need to contact police immediately, says Clifford.

He encourages people to report criminal offending to their local police station or anonymously via the Crimestoppers

The decision to prioritise money on escape routes and educating a “resilient community” was made after civil defence advisors, scientists, consultants and engineers convinced

He says people living along the Papamoa coast need 40 minutes to reach safety on foot.

GNS scientist Brad Scott says people must take their cue from the earthquake itself. An earthquake that generates such a tsunami will shake the ground for a minute or more. The ground shaking in the Japan

earthquake lasted more than two minutes.

There was a 96 per cent survival rate of those living on the tsunami inundated area. Many of those who died went back too soon after the first wave.

“It’s critical that people have the awareness that the first wave may come later than estimated and the largest wave may not be the first,” says Brad.

The threat of an up to 14 metre high tsunami being generated by a Southern Kermadec quake is a matter of when, not if, councillors were told.

The estimated return period for such an event is 610 years. But it could be anytime from 350 – 1500 years.

Councillors directed staff to look at future tsunami responses by concentrating on evacuation route planning, identifying evacuation infrastructure needs, public education and resilience planning.

Tauranga City Council has budgeted $995,000 to be spent on tsunami safety during the next two years: $575,000 in 2013/14, and $375,000 in 2014/15.

Brookfield in bloom The blooms are out at Sydenham Botanic Park and supporters of the Brookfield reserve are calling for residents to get involved in its development.

Sydenham Botanic Advisory Group committee member Lisa Adams says the three hectare park in Millers Rd is awash in yellow, thanks to a community planting day in April when more than 500 bulbs that had originated from park founder Frank Sydenham were planted.

Lisa says everyone involved has been inspired by the community support shown at the planting

day and invites people to enjoy the park’s beauty.

“We would love people to come along now and see the daffodils in bloom and the park at its best.”

Ultimately the committee want the park opposite Brookfield Shopping Centre to include park benches, picnic tables and toilets to encourage more community use – along with continued tree plantings.

“We’ve got big plans, but with all the money coming from the community it will be one step at a time.”

The $600 raised at the planting day has been saved for future works, with the group also apply-

ing for trust grants. All work to develop the park needs to be funded from the community following the council’s decision to just provide maintenance.

“We are really relying on the public to help.”

A milestone was reached in June when 10 Cook Island Pines, donated by the Tauranga Tree Company, were planted. They were the first trees to be planted by the new advisory group as part of the park’s original 2005 master plan.

Steaming into the season

City projects get $20m boost

Tauranga’s marine harbour precinct and a city university development are receiving a $20million boost from the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, which is expected to create 800 new jobs.

The allocation is part of the $40.5million granted to infrastructure projects by the council, confirmed during a confidential section of Wednesday’s regional council meeting in Rotorua. The money - $5 million for the stalled marine precinct, $15 million for the Durham Street university campus, and a further $18 million for the Opotiki Harbour Transformation Project - is expected to create jobs and education opportunities with no impact on rates in coming years.

Drink driving doctor ‘remorseful’

A former Tauranga doctor, who led police on a high speed chase while drunk, has been sentenced to 130 hours’ community work. Mustafa Sabanli, 30, appeared in Tauranga District Court yesterday for sentencing after earlier pleading guilty to driving with excess breath alcohol, dangerous driving, failing to stop for red and blue lights and failing to remain stopped. Sabanli was arrested on June 17 following a high speed police chase which ended in a crash on Hull Road. Reaching speeds in excess of 130kmh, police say Sabanli failed to negotiate the Totara Street and Hull Road roundabout, crashing into a building and writing off the Audi. Judge Alayne Wills sentenced him to 12 months supervision, nine months disqualification from driving, starting on Thursday, and ordered him to pay reparation of $2807.48.

A fresh faced Bay of Plenty Steamers squad is expecting another battle royale as they face Hawkes Bay in the team’s opening ITM Cup home game this weekend.

Falling short to Otago 32-29 last weekend, the Bay boys will host the Magpies in the annual Battle of the Bays at ASB Baypark on Sunday.

Having not won the clash since 2010, the largely uncapped and youthful side will be out to exact revenge, particularly after having the game snatched from them 42-41 with a last gasp try last year. The Steamers led 38-18 early in the second half.

Ahead of the side’s first match in front

of their faithful fans, Steamers loosie Carl Axtens says there is an electric buzz throughout the squad in what is shaping up to be an exciting season.

“There is not a lot of actual Bay of Plenty caps but a lot of experienced rugby players with players coming from Japan and different unions. We have got a lot of good footy players and exciting ones too.”

But the Steamers have their work cut out after the Magpies comprehensively dismantled Manawatu 45-18 in Napier, and having not experienced a battle of the Bays clash yet, the abrasive Tauranga Sports loosie is expecting a tough and physical hit out.

The Magpies have a solid squad this year scattered with X-factor and pace out wide, including former All Blacks Albie Mathewson and Zac Guildford.

“It’s always a huge game against Hawke’s Bay. They are tough big boys and have a solid forward pack.”

Retaining their place in the Premiership competition, despite a disappointing 2012 season, the Steamers have a tough ask booking a place in the playoffs with perennial powerhouses Canterbury, Auckland, Waikato and Wellington standing in their way.

Carl sees this as part of the challenge, where if they can notch wins against these teams and ensure they do not trip over the Championship sides, they can mount a charge for the title.

“It’s not a bad thing being the underdog and we will take it. It’s going to be good to get the home crowd behind us this weekend and we are looking forward to it.”

The match kicks off at 2.35pm on Sunday at ASB Baypark.

Trans-Tasman Crossfit enthusiasts shed blood, sweat and tears this week in a tribute to Tauranga man Greg Woledge who died when his van plunged off the Maungatapu causeway. In memory of the father, who was a keen athlete and Tauranga Crossfit member, Mount Crossfit owners John Templeton and Luke McGrure put together a gruelling workout honouring the exercises Greg loved on Wednesday.

“We designed a workout focussing around the things he enjoyed doing and we decided to put in the one thing he hated doing for good measure; picking up a weight plate and running 200metres,” says John.

The Te Puke community rallied together to protest a store selling synthetic cannabis in hopes it will also deter residents to boycott a Jellicoe Street dairy owned by the R18 store. About 100 concerned residents turned out for a silent protest on Wednesday afternoon after R18 store Puff 2 Go opened up two weeks ago selling synthetic cannabis.

Tangi for Tauranga teen

A tangi was held in Judea this week to farewell Tauranga teenager Wiremu Rawiri who died suddenly after an asthma attack at a school hostel in the Hawke’s Bay this week. Friends and family are gathered at Huria Marae to farewell the popular Year 12 Te Aute College student – the oldest of three brothers from Tauranga that boarded at the school in Pukehou. The 17-year-old passed away suddenly on Monday morning after suffering a fatal asthma attack. He was able to tell hostel staff that he had an asthma attack and an ambulance was called immediately. Paramedics worked on Wiremu for about 45 minutes but were not able to revive him.

While Paul Burrows might play down his own natural ability – saying that until about six years ago he had only done a bit of running for fitness and played a bit of squash – there is no denying a natural competitive streak which has rubbed off on his family members who are competing in underwater hockey and triathlon events.

In fact it’s a big part of

what keeps them all motivated – with both Paul and daughter Kirsty, 16, going to the World Triathlon Championships in London next month both determined to beat the other if nothing else.

“My big goal is to beat her,” chuckles Paul, who credits Kirsty’s determination to compete in London as motivating him to do the same.

It will be Paul’s second world championship triathlon event, after competing in Perth in 2009 in a standard tri event. He was inspired by his son Patrick, who

in the same year competed in Gold Coast-based sprint triathlon world championship.

This time, Paul has decided to compete in the shorter sprint event, which most under-20 competitors focus on, so he can go head-to-head with Kirsty.

The Tauranga Girls’ College Year 11 student has been a top triathlete since she began competing at primary school, including setting records in the AIMS Games intermediate-age multisport event for two years running. But this is her first foray into the international big time.

“Because it’s my first time my aim is to get experience and just compete well on the world stage,” says Kirsty, who hopes to compete in standard-length

triathlons in the next few years.

Kirsty, who is known in the family for her determined streak, is set on making the ITU World Championship Grand Final in London on September 13.

This week sister Megan, 19, left for the underwater hockey world championships in Hungary with the support of her mum and self-appointed ‘family team manager’ Deidre. Megan, who competed against Australia in last year’s Trans Tasman Underwater Hockey

Championships, is excited about the competition but knows there is a lot of expectation on the team.

“The under 19 team has won the world champs every year, so there is a bit of pressure on us,” says Megan.

While each family member has been putting in long hours training and fundraising for their trips, they wanted to thank the many people, behind the scenes, helping with coaching and training.

Second hand sale for the police Here’s one for the bargain hunters – having successfully moved into the brand new facilities on Monmouth St, Tauranga Police are selling an array of second hand furniture and office items from the old police station in a garage sale tomorrow.

After the removal of the furniture from the Durham St station, Senior Sergeant Ross Bielby says the site has been “completely gutted”.

From 8am tomorrow, at the old Durham St station site, about 100 second hand office chairs, as well as desks, sets of draws, filing cabinets and

general office attire will be up for grabs.

“It is all to do with our leases having expired at the 2nd Ave premises and at the Durham St building, so we need to get things sold and out before the lease is up next month,” says Ross.

The items are available for cash only and money will go to Tauranga Police.

“Depending on what is left after the garage sale there might be some opportunities for some charitable organisations to get some tables and chairs if they need them.”

Mount memorial for legendary surfer Legendary surfer Allan Byrne who died following a motorcycle accident in Bali earlier this month will be honoured at a special memorial at Mount Maunganui Surf Life Saving Club today.

The 62-year-old had close ties with the beachside township living in the Mount in the early 70s before moving to Australia, where he lived with wife Jayne and three boys Jamie, Michael and Matt.

in the Gold Coast where he made boards for world champion Wayne Bartholomew and Gary Elkerton, and later Kelly Slater.

He went on to put NZ on the world stage with a second placing at the 1981 Hawaiian Pipeline Masters. In the 1960s and 1970s Byrne was a four time New Zealand open champion and junior title holder.

While in Bali to compete in the Rip Curl Cup masters, the surfer came off his motorbike and was admitted to hospital with a broken arm. Doctors discovered Allan had a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain. Allan slipped into a coma and fought for five days before passing away on August 8.

Today, good friends John Quellin and Bob Davie from Whangamata have organised a celebration of Allan’s life at the Mount Surf Club from 12-1pm to coincide with his funeral in Broadbeach followed by a paddle-out at the surf club in Tugun where the family lives.

John says for people who knew Allan he was a legend – a humble man who was the quiet achiever of New Zealand surfing.

“Allan pulled in and drove deep and hard through several decades as a contemporary, loved and talented surfer. He was pretty special, honest and fun to be around.

“He was an innovator, a dreamer, a pal, a champ, a surfing legend, an icon, a Legendary traveller, a husband, son surfer Alla n Byrne. and father. He had friends in all sorts of places.”

Calls from the world’s media have taken Tauranga cat-lover Kim Edwards by surprise, after her sevenyear-old cat Rory had its life saved by a transfusion of dog blood.

“I just thought it was a nice feel-good story about the great job Tauranga Vets were doing, but there has been huge interest in it. It really seems to have struck a nerve,” says Kim. Last Friday, she realised her cat was in a bad way when it began howling horribly, and medical tests confirmed he had ingested rat poison.

With no time to lose, Tauranga vet Kate Heller suggested to Kim the best option could be to give Rory a transfusion of dog blood.

“I thought ‘Let’s see if it can work’.” Kim’s friend Michelle brought her Labrador Macie to Tauranga Vets to donate the blood, which was immediately given to Rory.

Within 90 minutes Rory was up

Macie the Labrador. and purring, wanting to be fed in what vet Kate describes as an ‘Amazing recovery’.

“We didn’t have any option but

to watch him die or try something and hope it worked – and it worked, really quickly.

“It was something that no text book would ever tell you to do.”

The idea came to Kate through Companion Animal Blood Bank manager Neil Marshall in Palmerston North, who suggests the option about twice a year.

For Kim the risk was well worth taking and the jokes have already begun.

“So many people said to us you’ve got a part Labrador cat – is he going to start fetching the paper now, or has he started barking - you get all these jokes.”

But despite her cat being saved

by Macie, the two pets have hardly become best friends.

“They haven’t grasped the scientific detail of what’s happened,” says Kim. “Nature takes over when they see each other.”

Remembering the Maori legend of Mauao The Weekend Sun is profiling some of Tauranga’s historic places dotted around the city. This week reporter Zoe Hunter looks at the iconic Mauao.

New Zealand Historic Places Trust Lower Northern area manager Fiona Lowe says the highly valued mountain is a prominent ancestral

landmark naturally connected to the iwi of Tauranga Moana.

It stands at the western end of Mount Maunganui’s main beach and the southern entrance to the Tauranga Harbour.

Fiona says Maunganui, the big mountain, is usually called Mauao, which means “caught by the light”.

Maori legend says Mauao (the small hill) was a slave to Otanewainuku (thought of as a chiefly mountain), and once stood in the Kaimai Ranges between Otanewainuku and Puwhenua (regarded as a beautiful hill).

Mauao was seen as unimportant and

was consequently nameless. He loved the beautiful Puwhenua. However, she loved the great Otanewainuku.

According to the legend, the small hill was so upset he drowned himself in the ocean.

He called on the patupaiarehe (fairy people) to drag him towards the ocean.

But it was sun rise before he reached the deep water, and the patupaiarehe flew away to hide from the light of the sun.

The little mountain was left alone at the entrance to the harbour and has since been known as Mauao – the much loved symbol of Tauranga Moana.

Today, the natural landscape of Mauao has been highly modified to include four wheel drive and walking tracks and it is open to public access as a recreation and historic reserve.

On 14 May, 2008, three iwi of Tauranga Moana; Ngaiterangi, Ngati Ranginui and Ngati Pukenga, took ownership of Mauao.

Waitaha iwi are also acknowledged as having a close ancestral connection to Mauao.

Covering up after five years in the business Hundreds of orphan children in Europe will be covered up from the winter cold when they receive knitted goods which Tauranga women have been busy making.

Hundreds of blankets, clothes and accessories have been knitted through Operation Cover Up for orphans and poor families living in Eastern Europe. This year’s total

spans 385 blankets, 238 jerseys, 428 socks and slippers, and 131 scarves, along with cartons full of clothing, slippers and toys.

Omokoroa resident and district co-ordinator Nelda McCann, who has been knitting for six years, is pleased with this year’s efforts.

“At the end of the day we’re trying to help the deprived.”

Each year the knitted goods are shipped to orphanages and families in countries

including Romania, Ukraine and Moldova.

Nelda has been running the operation for five years but this is her last year as district co-ordinator. Although she will continue to look after Omokoroa and Katikati areas, Nelda is looking for two people to help lesson her workload by covering areas closer to town. “There were so many great presentations I really didn’t think we had a chance,” says the Year 13 student, who after surprising herself by being selected for the six-member national team, has been competed against students from seven countries in the FedEx/JA International Trade Challenge in Hong Kong last week.

Judged by some of the country’s top business leaders, 80 students – who were all competing in the Young Enterprise Scheme – were recently paired up (Loren’s partner was Westlake Boys’ High School

teammate James Rankin), and given the challenge of creating a compelling market entry strategy for a not-so-usual product.

Loren and James were given snowboards – not a subject she knew a lot about. “I don’t know anything about snowboarding. But obviously I knew enough about business for them to pick me. I couldn’t believe it, there were so many fantastic, really talented people at the event.”

Only 10 minutes after being given their challenge topic they had to give a two-minute presentation to the judges and answer questions – in what she describes as a “quite daunting” experience.

Loren is still weighing up her career direction, but expected the trip would confirm her passion for business.

Competition regional coordinator Anne Pankhurst says the trade fair day offers a good chance to find out about the different products or services the teams of Year 12 and 13 students are selling. “They have come up with some really

interesting products from cup-holder skins to candles, and T-shirts and chocolates. There’s even one group that is selling tickets to an event they are putting on.” The competition challenges students to go from developing a business plan to successfully launching a product and generating sales. The winner of the regional competition will compete against 20 regional winners in the national finals in December.

Western Bay’s Hare Krishna followers are offering anyone interested a chance to learn more about the religion on Thursday when they put on a celebration festival for the birthday of Krishna, their deity.

The celebration, which will include dancing, discussion about the religion and a catered Hare Krishna vegetarian feast, is being put on as a public event for the first time in Tauranga. The event is being held at the Historic Village, as part of the Tauranga Regional Multicultural Council’s monthly ‘Living in Harmony’ series which introduces the public to various cultures.

Tauranga Regional Multicultural Council president Ewa Fenn says it is important to include events about various faiths as part of the series to give everybody a chance to learn and better understand their beliefs and culture.

The Janmasthami Festival, the birthday of Lord Krishna, has been marked for thousands of years in India, in what is described as a celebration of colour, music and feasting. The event has been organised by the Western Bay Hare Krishna community, which includes more than a dozen families.

Entry to the event is by donation to cover food costs, with registration of attendance required by August 25 for catering.

Erin Cartwright is coordinating a group of parents on the peninsula to work with local authorities to establish a new skate, scooter and BMX park for Omokoroa youngsters.And the plan is not a pipe dream – with Western Bay of Plenty District Council and Omokoroa Community Board already guiding Erin in finding a suitable location.

“Katikati has certainly inspired us,” says Erin.

She says while Omokoroa youngsters enjoy a beachfront park, natural spaces and Western Ave’s sports grounds, they have nowhere to practise other hobbies.

“Scooters are such a big part of their lives, as well as BMX-ing and skateboarding. “Omokoroa offers limited areas for these activities, so really it’s to give the kids something else to focus on. And with a growing number of families moving to Omokoroa and surrounding areas we can do more to support positive development, social and physical, of our young community members.” The group initially approached Omokoroa Community Board in mid-2012 about the possibility of a skatepark.

“They were happy to go further with it and [Council’s parks and reserves manager) Peter Watson offered to help step us through the process, so we visited possible sites.” The group has now discounted two possible sites including Omokoroa Domain and Cooney’s Reserve – but is not yet publicising their preferred site, instead first seeking agreement from the Council and community board. They envisage the skatepark being a facility in an open, safe environment for children of all ages. “We do not see the park as a big concrete blob eyesore in the community but rather a family friendly space for everyone to be proud of.”

Erin is looking for more people to join the initial ‘skatepark group’ to coordinate and drive planning.

Tramway to history

The central role of Kauri milling in Katikati’s history is being recognised with a permanent memorial of a tramline and bogie for transporting timber at the Katikati Heritage Museum.

During the last few months a team of volunteers has brought back to the life the era, dating back more than 100 years, when the township boasted thriving kauri milling operations.

Volunteers have spent their weekend and free time rebuilding a section of tramline and bogie at the museum, which originally took timber to Diggelmann’s Wharf. Museum manager Paula Gaelic says with milling being such an important part of the region’s history, and the original tram rail line crossing the museum site, she was keen to build a replica “so we could appreciate what these men achieved”.

Paula says the reconstruction of a replica Kauri logging tram rail system at the museum gate is a major project which is already being praised as an authentic replica of the original “engineer’s masterpiece”. Hours of planning has taken place and on a zero budget and trying to source gear that has been out of use for 80 odd years was more than challenging.” The biggest challenge was sourcing four sets of the right bogie wheels, but after calling all over the country, they finally sourced some at the New Zealand Timber Museum near Putaruru.

Paula says the Wharawhara mill was the southernmost Kauri mill in the world, and a major business in the area up until the early 1900s, with the tram rail line playing a key role in operations transporting timber from the mill, under the power of gravity.

It’s not the only cat in the news this week – Dean Barker’s needed a buoyancy transfusion, after it nosedived under the water instead of rising up over it. You get that, when you put the bows on upside down.

At the risk of pointing out the obvious to Grant Dalton, we can see why the boat is tending to nose dive. They’ve put the front bits on the wrong way around. I know this sounds like a lecture from Boat Design 101 but the idea of the bow is to have some overhang, so when it drives into waves, the bow will tend to rise up, NOT be driven deeper.

up to the front of the Ark which tended to dip the bows a little lower into the water. He wasn’t concerned about hobby-horsing. In fact he invited two on board. Now all you yacht racing aficionados out there will be tuttutting, saying “reverse wave piercing bows are to improve aerodynamics, reduce hull resistance through waves and reduce pitching motion”.

Well that’s all very nice, but it’s not a lot of use when your catamaran is cartwheeling down San Francisco Bay, scaring the whitebait. Speaking of whitebait, stocks are dwindling as the season got underway this week.

Riverbank rumours include matching catch limit to the snapper proposal – three fish each.

Which would make a fritter about the size of a teaspoon. Better option: Ban the amateur sale of whitebait. Only take what you intend to consume. It is crazy this is the only fish that can be caught in bulk and hocked for tax-free cash.

Gate Pa bakery turns five Max and Beate Sommer at Bakers Delight are celebrating the company’s fifth birthday this month.

The couple have been the proud owners of Bakers Delight in Gate Pa since August 2008.

Free fruit in Katikati’s food highway A highway of free fruit, which the entire community can benefit from, is the aim of Katikati families who have been mucking in at a public reserve for nearly a year.

Volunteers of KatiKaiWay donned gumboots and armed themselves with spades, wheelbarrows and gloves to plant trees in Gilfillan Reserve this month – an act which will eventually see them receive free fruit in return.

The August 17 planting day was the project’s second volunteer gathering to get the food highway growing, says Jizzy Green, who came up with the idea when walking the barren reserve with husband Mike. Most of the beds had to be hand dug, adding more work to an already busy planting

and mulching schedule – “but many hands make light work”.

Those ‘many hands’ – with their community – in future will be able to pick the fruit.

Jizzy says the vision is to ensure a free fruit supply for local families and “a place of plenty and beauty in the Bay”.

“The name KatiKaiWay – a play on words with highway and food – came parents and interested parties.” Jizzy says her workplace, Katikati Kindergarten (an EnviroSchool) spearheaded the idea, getting pupils and the

community on-board and gaining project approval from Western Bay of Plenty District Council.

Physical efforts to create the edible fruit walkway began October 2012 with 45 people planting feijoa and plum trees – this month persimmon, fig, almonds, feijoas, citrus and nashi pears varieties were added. KatiKaiWay is now managed by volunteers, who seek grants to cover its costs.

Time to plant your fruit trees now August is a great time for planting fruit trees.

Rainfall and temperatures are reliable and the soil is soft for digging, so your fruit trees get the best start before they begin shooting and fruiting.

The best time to plant fruit trees is in winter, when they are dormant.

The best place to plant is in an open, sunny position, sheltered from strong winds. Fruit trees will grow in a wide range of soil types as long as there is good drainage. When planting, mix some compost with good soil in the base of the hole, and add slow release fertiliser, we recommend NovaTec. For the first one to two years it is best to remove the fruit from the tree when they form. This allows the tree to concentrate all its resources into establishing a strong root network.

Every home needs a Meyer lemon tree in the yard.

These are well-suited to cold temperatures and easy to grow. My tree fruits nearly all year round and the convenience of having fresh lemon juice for pancakes and fish fillets is superb. Fruiting mandarin and lime trees on patios look fantastic and are handy for cooking. The winter sale means everything is discounted by at least 10 per cent, this may exclude specials and multi buys. Now is the time to give peach and nectarine trees a couple of sprays with one of the copper preparations available. This is essential as a disinfectant against the over-wintering spores of curly leaf disease. Using the same copper preparation as a general fungicide, for other fruit trees now, is a good idea too. Families try a taste of sailing

Tauranga Yacht Club members are making their keelboats, catamarans and skippering skills available for families to get a fun taste of sailing on Fathers’ Day on September 1.

Everyone will be invited to get actively involved in the sailing or just enjoy the ride, and there is the option for the very young and those less agile, to take the comfortable, motorised option aboard the cruise boat Luv Boat II. Commodore Gary Smith says the event, between 12.30-4pm, comes right in the middle of the America’s Cup build-up, with the challenger finals finishing the day before, and the youth racing starting the next day.

“Starring in the youth team are local sailors Jason Saunders, Sam Meech, and Peter Burling – great role models for the next generation of kids. What better time to try this cool sport for yourself?”

While it is a fundraiser for the yacht club’s coaching programme, mainly it’s just a friendly welcome to all who would like to check out what the sport is all about. And it’s by no means expensive at $15 for adults, $5 for under-17s, and free for under-5s.

“Fathers’ Day means different things to different people, but whether its dad looking for a chance to relax, mum wanting to arrange some father/child bonding time, or the kids wanting to give dad something more than a cup of tea in bed, this fits the bill,” says Gary.

Also happening on the day will be a club open day with displays and information on the junior ‘learn to sail’ courses which are about to start, the fast and exciting multihulls, the hugely successful Women on Water, and the other club divisions. There’ll be a lolly scramble, complimentary food, and the restaurant and bar will be available afterwards. Because the places on yachts are limited, bookings are essential.

“We are putting out the word to other clubs – to the one-car [brand] clubs, like the Jaguar and the MG clubs – so we hoping some of them will join in.”

Bryce, who himself has a 1966 Daimler, is hoping the event will attract about 40 cars for a display near Phoenix carpark from 8.30am to noon.

Meanwhile, Mount Maunganui Mainstreet manager Leanne Brown says plans for the upcoming ‘Wheels on Mainstreet’ event at Labour Weekend were progressing well, with initial indications suggesting up to 300 hot rodders could take part, with it being run to coincide with the National Street Rod Association AGM. “We are expecting double the numbers we got last year with the pilot event. It was such a success – both for the participant and onlookers – that they were determined to come back again and hold the AGM at the same time.”

Leanne says the event will be a treat for all hot rod lovers with rods of all ages, makes and styles on display and driving around the area during the long weekend. Increased car numbers will mean the car display is split between Maunganui Rd and Coronation Park.

being expanded to make it easier for older drivers around the wider Western Bay to have their car checked to see how well their vehicles “fit” them and if changes are needed to make for maximum safety, visibility and comfort.

Travel Safe coordinator Karen Smith says the programme, which up until now has only been run in Tauranga, is being expanded to have volunteers running six-monthly check-up days in Katikati, Te Puke, Otumoetai, Greerton and the Mount-Papamoa areas.

“A lot of the elderly don’t drive their cars very far, so just running the pro-

gramme in Tauranga meant it was too far for many to travel,” says Karen.

Adjustments, which could range from seat position for easy access to pedals or mirrors, are suggested from volunteers watching the driver complete a short circuit.

CarFit technicians must be licensed drivers, with a sound knowledge of driving terms and vehicle safety features; and with good physical fitness.

Volunteer technicians will be put through a day’s training on September 13.

Bequests for strong foundation

Strong support for a new $3.6m day centre announced for Waipuna Hospice has prompted a reminder from CEO Richard Thurlow about the benefits of leaving a bequest to Waipuna to safeguard the centre’s future and meet the ongoing needs of our community.

The Waipuna Hospice Foundation’s $1.8m contribution to the centre, which was matched by a $1.8m TECT donation, had drained much of the foundation’s available resources – prompting his reminder of the need for more support.

“The new wing will be a real legacy for generations to come, thanks to the generosity of benefactors to the Waipuna Foundation in previous years,” says Richard.

“This is the first time we have used funds

from the foundation for a building project and it’s really nice to be able to do that and put some really long-term building plans into the area and show the trust is doing what it was designed to do.”

The foundation, which was launched in 2003, aims to build up a fund that one day will generate income from interest, reducing the ongoing fundraising burden on the community and giving the hospice “real longevity”.

“Unfortunately with the building project we have needed to draw on these funds, however we hope that future bequests will rebuild and grow this fund.”

The new wing will contain clinic and medical procedure rooms, lounge and family areas, as well as providing more space for counselling (including sessions for children and young people), bereavement support groups, massage therapy and education. It will cater for newly referred and more active patients, relieving pressure off

the Hospice at Home Service which looks after patients who are more unwell.

The new wing will also include an expanded training room. Accommodating up to 100 people it will enable us to provide palliative care education to other health care providers.

This week work began on raising the carpark by 50cm to flood-proof the area, while the first work on the day centre is expected to begin in November with the aim of having the project completed by October.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council and Tauranga City Council have been working together to develop a draft Local Alcohol Policy. As a part of this, we asked the public at the start of the year to complete a survey about their views regarding licensed premises.

We received 805 responses which have contributed to the development of the draft Local Alcohol Policy.

WHY?

Since the passing of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act on 18 December 2012 councils are now able to develop a Local Alcohol Policy to guide decisions on the number and location of new licensed premises, opening hours and other licensing conditions of both existing and new licensed premises.

The Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty District Local Alcohol Policy can cover rules for both ‘Off’ and ‘On’ licensed premises, club licences and special licences.

An Off-licence is a licence for premises where the licensee can sell alcohol for consumption somewhere else. Bottle stores and supermarkets are examples of off-licenced premises.

An On-licence is a licence for premises where the licensee can sell alcohol for consumption on the premises. Bars, taverns, hotels and night clubs are examples of on-licenced premises.

A Club Licence is a licence for a range of clubs, for example RSAs and sports clubs.

A Special Licence allows for selling and supplying alcohol at events or to allow a licensee to extend their operating hours to allow for the sale and supply of alcohol at an event.

Under the draft Policy the following rules and restrictions are being proposed and it’s these matters that the councils want your views on.

Trio riding for a cure A Tauranga trio will attempt the cycle of their lives in an effort to save others when they ride to conquer cancer later this year.

Abundant Health Tauranga trio Tash Thompson, Zara Crick and Karen Connell are tackling The Ride to Conquer Cancer in November.

In November Karen Connell, Zara Crick and Tash Thompson will cycle about 200km as part of The Ride to Conquer Cancer in Auckland.

Starting out as strangers, the women have come together through a shared love for biking and a determination to find a cure for cancer. After a few emails, the trio met up in Tauranga and started training together. Putting their bums on bikes seemed a small sacrifice following the major impact cancer has had on their lives.

“I just thought it would be a good challenge for me personally, and also just to raise funds for a really damn good cause. It’s a win, win situation,” says Karen.

“It’d be nice to have something I can give to my kids (if they ever got cancer) if they do come up with a cure.”

Tash says it was watching her grandmother and a close family friend fight the disease that made her more determined to find a cure.

“It’s always been something that’s close to my heart.

It’s something that needs to be out there.”

After working in oncology for seven years, Zara is starting a new job – no longer chemotherapy orientated. To continue her strong support for finding a cure she entered the event.

Together they aim to raise $6000, or $2000 each.

Karen is nearly at her target while Tash and Zara need to raise more to reach their goals.

Disease is about damaged cells There are apparently more than 14,000 diseases that can affect human beings.

We develop chronic illnesses because various tissues and body systems have become dysfunctional. It is worth remembering that failing body systems are just accumulated damage to the cells that make up tissue, such as cartilage in our joints.

As an example, we now know that the main driver of osteoarthritis is the gradual destruction of the specialised cells (chondrocytes) that secrete and maintain joint cartilage. Research

by K Yudoh (2005) demonstrated that free radical damage to chon-

drocytes resulted in a reduced ability to maintain cartilage matrix. Over time, these cells die and this results in loss of cartilage.

This leads to cartilage malfunction and then disease.

Central to nutritional therapy with OA is to significantly increase dietary antioxidants that are known to protect damaged joint cells. This same pattern of cells being damaged, leading to tissue damage, is really how most chronic diseases start. Nutritional therapy is designed to help restore cells back to normal function. Swapping ladders for leathers Greerton volunteer firefighter David Yeo will swap his flame retardant firefighting uniform for motorbike leathers as he prepares to hit the open road to raise money for the New Zealand Cancer Society.

David will join other firefighters riding

from Auckland on November 20 to the Burt Munro Challenge in Invercargill on November 28 – a distance of 3822kms one way. The ride is the brainchild of Auckland firefighter Rob Appleton who came up with the fundraising venture after attending a third funeral service in the space of a year for a colleague who died of cancer. “I decided there had to be something I could do to contribute to fighting cancer and its devastating effects on our communities,” says Rob. Rob contacted the Cancer Society of New Zealand asking if they’d like to be the benefactor. The ride was created in memory of firefight-

ers and New Zealanders lost or effected by the disease. “There’s not a single person in New Zealand that hasn’t been touched by cancer in some way, either personally, or through family, friends, work colleagues.”

David, who has been a volunteer firefighter for 12 months, joined the ride in honour of family members he has lost to cancer. He will be accompanied by fellow volunteers John Burkett and Andy Collins on the ride.

Ageing a balancing act for many residents Is walking backwards a challenge?

What about standing on one leg?

If so, you are not alone.

As we age, our balance, strength and co-ordination suffer, which increases the chances of having a serious fall.

Latest ACC figures show Tauranga City is ranked seventh in New Zealand for the number of fallrelated ACC claims from elderly household injuries.

Tauranga has 4529 claims per 10,000 people, with household falls contributing 56.2 per cent of claims

lodged in 2011/2012 – streaks ahead of sport and recreation with 22 per cent, and the commercial sector with 7.9 per cent.

The costs of these claims were $18.3m, $11.3m and $9.03m respectively.

As a result, Age Concern Tauranga is looking at ways to keep the elderly community firmly on two feet with the latest initiative ‘Steady As You Go’ working closely with ACC. Age Concern Tauranga chairperson Angela Scott says they have got some initial funding from the Midland Health Promotion Fund to get the programme off the ground, but it is still a work in progress.

“It’s in the initial stages and we have secured funding to start it off. But we probably won’t actually get it going until January or February.”

Tauranga will become the second age concern organisation to implement the programme, following on from Otago’s successful template in recent years.

The classes include standing exercises, such as standing on one leg (using a chair for extra balance), and walking exercises, such as marching, side-steps or walking backwards.

“These are going to be low impact exercises. They are for balance and it’s very important because the statistics in this area for falls are very high. At the moment, 18.2 per cent of adults over 65 in the Tauranga area have had falls,” says Angela.

Nationwide, falls are ACC’s biggest single source of injury claims – with the claim rate highest for older people. In the home alone category, there are about 450,000 claims per year with falls registering more than 600,000.

These reactions are due to para-phenylenediamine, a hair dye used to darken the colour of the tattoos. Reactions usually develop 10-14 days after application and present as a red, itchy rash overlying the tattoo. Some patients develop blistering, occasionally resulting in permanent scarring. Unfortunately, an allergy to PPD is for life and once sensitised you need to avoid most hair dyes. You never know, the ‘silver surfer’ look might become fashionable again.

Marine funding good news for ratepayers As we went to press I received a heads-up phone call in my capacity as chair of the Marine Precinct Haulout Project that Regional Council was to approve a $5million grant to kick start a development at Sulphur Point.

No details yet, and there will be tags but we will work through these and at long last put in place a replacement facility for the 600 ton slipway that was demolished to make way for the second harbour bridge.

Further grants

At the same time the Regional Council have announced a $15 million grant towards a university project. I’ll cover the details from our Marine Precinct Committee perspective next week but for committee members Terry Molloy, Tony Christiansen, Larry Baldock and me, it’s been a long slog to get to this point. Hopefully now all elected members will swing in behind it. In my opinion the City Council’s contribution can be funded through the Strategic Property account and not be a call on ratepayer revenue.

Another good news story is that there is a $4.2 million surplus at the end of the financial year. Staff told us it was mainly the result of a management of interest rates that contributed. From where I sit it is also about the financial culture created by this Council where the spending priority focus has shifted to spending restraint while keeping the city functioning.

Focus on core infrastructure combined with a flexible forward 10 year plan is a refreshing change from yesteryear. Council now reacts to financial pressure and priorities as situations change.

What to do with the surplus is a nice problem to have. Policy dictates the first $500,000 goes in debt reduction. In the past I’ve advocated that any surplus is ratepayers’ money and should be returned via a rates reduction next financial year. Others say by putting the surplus forward into planned projects achieves the same thing. It will be a robust discussion.

CEO Garry Poole told us he was reviewing how the City’s Civil Defence Plan is delivered.

Presently ratepayers stump up about $200,000 for a shared service with Western Bay Council. Coming from Wellington, Garry is more acutely aware of natural disaster planning.

Local Government is required by Central Government to have an effective response plan in the event of earthquakes, floods, tsunamis and the like. It doesn’t define how to do it – it’s up to individual councils.

Garry said in Wellington, City Council staff had ‘grab bags’ under their desks with a survival kit that included running shoes for women who would find it hard to run in high heels. A good idea, but I had a quiet chuckle as I imagined the building rocking around in an earthquake with female staff hiding under desks

pulling on running shoes ready for a big sprint once the shaking stopped.

At last there was some qualified sense and balance injected into the great tsunami siren debate. A group of experts addressed a Council workshop this week.

Of particular interest was volcanologist Brad Scott.

He presented in down-to-earth terms – no pun intended – the reality of the situation Tauranga faces in the event of a tsunami. You can read the detail of the workshop on page 4, or on SunLive, but the bit that really struck home is the real danger is from an earthquake/ collapse of the Kermadec Trench.

When it happens – not if but when – an up to 14 metre wave will hit us about 40 minutes later. He told us it takes longer than that to analyse seismic data. So sirens would be irrelevant in that case.

Afterwards he said in the Design plans for the Indonesian earthquake the Tauranga Harbour Central Marine Precinct. ocean floor rose 30 metres – this displaced a huge amount of water upwards creating a tsunami.

He said the highest tsunami recorded on this coast was at a point on Slipper Island and Opotiki where evidence of a huge tsunami was up to 30 metres above sea level. On the other hand these large waves don’t occur often. On the likelihood scale, it’s a 350 year – 1500 year occurrence. Volcanic ash, floods, storms etc. rank well ahead in regular disaster terms we were told.

The purpose of these experts was that the $1 million or so cost estimate of tsunami sirens would be better spent on a suite of warning systems for all disaster warning.

Advice summary

Here is a summary of their advice: If an earthquake is longer than a minute or you can’t stand up while it’s shaking don’t hang around waiting for advice or help or a siren. Get going to high ground. Have a plan of where that is and how you are going to get there. Take a transistor radio.

Don’t rely on your car, the roads will be jammed.

Staff also told us they were bound to put a note on your property file if your property is in the tsunami danger zone. Some of us railed against this, and were told we had no say. In the event I suppose it’s common sense that you would know if you live on the coastal strip there is an issue – but we don’t know when or how big it would be.

I ran out of space last week to let you know there is no legal restraint on the man who feeds seagulls in the Avenues.

Some of his neighbours had appealed to Council to stop what they said was a big nuisance.

Council staff took this complaint seriously and obtained a legal opinion – there’s no point in pursuing a prosecution if it’s going to be tossed out of court.

Rick Curach helpfully pointed to a website that provided a seagull scaring noise on his smartphone.

Imagine piping that through a stereo!

Oh well – even with issues of cycling/pedestrians on walkways, trees, dogs and seagulls we don’t do too badly at living together in our city.

We do have a lot to be thankful for.

In the boring to most of you department, full Council approved the City/Districts Plan.

Mayor Stuart Crosby described the plan as a task of theatrical proportions – taking five years and a huge amount of money.

But it’s a never ending story as almost everything planned continues to change and get interpreted, litigated and altered.

The changing face of education Is New Zealand’s system keeping up?

As the owner of a childcare centre, I am constantly trying to find ways to improve the level of education we give our children.

To be able to learn, children must have a thirst for learning and be able to focus/ concentrate. Without these – learning will not happen.

How do we develop a thirst for learning and encourage children to concentrate?

A thirst for learning is developed by children having a stimulating

environment which makes them want to learn. We do this by providing a large range of activities and resources: activity tables, exercise books, reading, bush adventures, mud slides, rope climbing, bike riding, ball skills, a sandpit, gardening – the list goes on.

Children learn many skills from having this wide variety of resources and activities to choose from. We are always thinking of new things to help extend children’s creativity. While extending their creative skills, children are also learning about numbers,

colours, organisation, and sharing and socialisation with their peers.

Having the ability to concentrate and focus on topics is an excellent attribute.

If instilled in children at a young age, it becomes a natural part of their persona.

We do this by having regular mat times, organised bush activities and regular fun events. These are things you can try to improve your child’s concentration.

The importance of having these two fundamentals: a thirst for learning and being able to focus cannot be overemphasised. If these skills are developed at an early age, children will excel in whatever they are interested in.

“It’s like everything in life, there has to be a balance.”

She says the children’s yoga is fun, relaxed and teaches children how to move their bodies, focus, learn skills for stress management and handle mood changes more effectively.

Mel has been practising yoga for about 10 years and says the benefits are endless – “plus the best part is, you don’t have to be flexible to do it”.

She invites people to begin balancing out the stress in their lives with Yoga Ananda classes at Historic Village.

Classes are small to ensure people receive a more personal experience, allowing teachers to be more focused on students.

‘chess at speed’ Starting as a fun way to impress his young son, who loved anyone wielding a sword, Anthony Mair has become a huge fan of the sport of fencing since picking up his first foil eight years ago.

“I just fell in love with it,” says Anthony, who last July formed the En Garde Fencing club, which has since

been teaching foil for anyone interested, aged 11 or over, in what he believes is the first fencing club in the area for more than 40 years.

“It’s a great sport. The thing I love about it myself is not so much the competition, but the chance to test your mettle against yourself.”

Anthony has recently shifted the En Garde Fencing Club from Papamoa College to run its Wednesday and Sunday training sessions at Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre.

While the shift has forced some members to drop off, he hopes the training venue’s central location will encour-

age more to get involved.

While from the outside it may seem dangerous, Anthony teaches people to fence safely, with all members also getting use of full protective kit as part of the club fees.

“It’s like brain gym. It’s great for coordination but it’s also good just as a general form of exercise.”

Anthony says the sport is like “chess at speed” because you need to plan your tactics ahead and says it is also good for helping develop fine motor skills.

He encourages those interested in watching the fencers in action to call ahead to ensure there is a spare kit for a trial.

Last week was another one spent travelling the length of the country.

On Tuesday, I was in Whangarei for a series of meetings with iwi and business leaders regarding mineral exploration potential in the area. This was followed by a site visit to the Marsden Point Oil Refinery. Marsden Point produces 70 per cent of New Zealand’s refined oil needs, and directly employs more than 300 people. On Wednesday, I was in Auckland for the Deloitte Energy Excellence Awards. Congratulations to Transpower, which won the premier Overall Energy Company of the Year award, and to all other winners and finalists.

On Friday, I was down in the Otago region with my fellow National MP Michael Woodhouse for a site visit to Macraes gold mine, the largest in New Zealand.

Last column I reported that the most common complaint that constituents bring into our office is with ACC. Positive feedback from that article has encouraged me to share some additional issues that we manage on behalf of constituents.

This will enable a better appreciation and understanding as to how an MP can work for you and the issues we manage on behalf of constituents. I am very fortunate to have highly qualified and skilled personnel that can assist with most matters.

While I work at a national level in Parliament I will this week focus on my work locally and in a later article share with you some of the questions I ask in the house on behalf of Tauranga.

My first story is about reported institutional bullying from the collections department at the local court. In short: an eight and a half months pregnant woman resented at our office reporting significant distress given the treatment she received from a court staff member.

Perfect time for announcement What perfect timing, just before an election the Tauranga council announces what they overcharged us rates last year but also generously announced that they will use the overpayment to endeavour to keep next year’s rates down, within the self-imposed rates cap.

Whilst, of course, it is pleasing to see that the council did not spend everything that it collected from us (rates charged last

year totalled $103.7 million), it is also unrealistic to expect us to dance in the streets when they will be taking the overpayment, of over four per cent, into account when striking next year’s rates. This means that if an increase of say 3.5 per cent is struck

Big step up to councillor?

So Mike Baker is a candidate for Tauranga Mayor and Tauranga City Council - again.

For the past two years he has continually criticised, via letters to the papers, the performance of the current Tauranga City Council.

In the Weekend Sun, August 16, he again puts the boot into Mayor Crosby. Collectively, they may have not performed very well over the past three years. But when Mr Baker was a member of the previous council, did he

perform any better? No, otherwise he would have been voted back in again.

In many cases he sided with the Mayor’s team for big, costly nice-to-have projects. Unfortunately for him, ratepayers have very long memories. So, if he intends to continue his election campaign in the same vitriolic vein, he will not win many friends let alone votes.

Being chairman of the Foodbank is a massive step up to becoming a councillor or Mayor.

Burnt pot sparks callout A burnt out pot on a stove top prompted Tauranga Fire Brigade to remind people to keep looking while cooking.

Firefighters were called to a home in Kings Avenue about 7.10pm on Tuesday to find a smoke logged house. Tauranga senior station officer Mark Keller says a householder went out and left a pot on the stove. It’s the third call of its type in the last month.

Man sentenced for leg stabbing An unemployed Tauranga man will spend the next nine months on home detention for stabbing another man during an altercation last October.

Dylan James Tate, 20, pleaded guilty to a charge of wounding with intent at an earlier court appearance and was sentenced on Tuesday.

Unenviable finances

Aware of Tauranga city’s unenviable finances, I was aghast to read of a local political reporter’s favourable ratings of our present Tauranga City councillors. It prompted me to do some research.

In 2004, our city debt was $70 million rising to $170 million by 2007. Then ballooning to $340 million in 2010 and now stands at around a staggering $500 million in 2013. Wake up Tauranga.

This is insanity. We just cannot afford to continue re-electing these fiscally-incompetent councillors and perpetuating this increasing massive debt. Let’s dump the whole 11 for a fresh start and replace them with people who have at least some financial acumen and accountability. Tony Fellingham, Tauranga South.

Regular reports to voters needed Same-sex marriages: a private matter

I have been following, with interest, the re-emergence of the councillors and Mayor of Tauranga, and hearing about what they have planned for the next term of office. It amuses me that we don’t seem to hear about their plans during their term, but nearing Voting time, it all comes out of the woodwork.

I really think that it might be a good idea, when the new Councillors and Mayor are voted in, that they are required to “ report back “ every six months, by means of written comments

in the local newspapers, giving the loyal voters, all those ratepayers who contribute towards their salaries, feedback on what has been done, within the ambit of their proposed plans, and what is still to be done ... just to keep us all in the picture so to speak.

We all know that proposed plans and projects don’t always run to their schedules, but it would be comforting to read about where they are at, and what they are doing about it. So what do you think?

Christchurch needs a venue for all Of all the monstrosities, that A-frame, ambiguous building in Christchurch heads the list. It keeps certain folk to go back for more than 2000 years in their minds.

Instead, the governing body should have decided to build a large building with a few sports areas which everyone could enjoy, instead of a few folk.

That A-frame is very vulnerable to flames, someone could easily set fire to it. And if that happened, I would not weep. I cannot understand why in this

age of sophisticated technology that people bow to a non-existent deity.

Something is definitely missing from between their ears and they have been fighting wars for more than two centuries, and at this very moment, are still fighting. So long as there are those thousands of religious cults there will never be peace. The main culprits are Middle Eastern Arabs; most of the males are armed. We humans are supposed to be the intelligent ones.

Dairy robber adjournment A Bethlehem man who stole $5000 worth of synthetic cannabis using an imitation pistol from a Lenz Superette on Cameron Road had his sentencing adjourned.

Brett Robert Heginbotham, 28, appeared in Tauranga District Court on Tuesday charged with aggravated robbery after earlier pleading guilty. He was remanded on bail until October 3.

next year, in reality it is actually closer to 8 per cent when taking into account what they have admitted that they overcharged us this year. Sleight of hand is what I would call it.

But I also question whether they have included possible future higher borrowing costs or the transfer of the Route K debt (currently capitalised) to ratepayers, which will both significantly financially impact on ratepayers throughout the city.

The recent windfall for Maori is the gift of $22.1 million and 10 acre block recreation reserve to Nga Maunga Whakahi o Kaipara tribe, plus apology. What are we apologising for? NonMaori present-day NZers are not responsible for what happened 173 years ago. When Maori broke their agreement and rose against the Crown, land was forfeited, which Maori understood. Much was returned.

We’re the only country in the world to give over $39 billion to settle unproven claims by a race which signed a Treaty, vowing allegiance to the Queen of England, and who were given equal rights under English laws.

Two Tauranga estuaries not 100% pure The Sun’s August 16 editorial raises the issue of New Zealand’s ‘100% pure’ brand. If you live beside a Tauranga estuary, you will have difficulty accepting this label.

For more than 30 years, waterfront residents have struggled to prevent the Welcome Bay estuary from being completely overwhelmed by rubbish, debris, siltation and mangroves.

I have more than 1000 photos (one shown here), as a record of the degradation of the Welcome Bay estuary, yet Tauranga Mayor

Crosby, a senior planner and the new CEO, are all still in denial.

Each one of them are refusing to discuss the

effectiveness of the Tauranga City Council policies and objectives in providing environmental care for our estuaries.

By contrast, in recent months, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, some TCC staff and some TCC councillors, such as Rick Curach and Murray Guy, have been responsive to our concerns and we are very grateful for this.

To be clear, my community’s concerns relate to the Welcome Bay and Waimapu estuaries and I accept that the other Tauranga estuaries may well be ‘100% pure’.

Attitudes more powerful than safety legislation National’s Minister of Labour Tauranga MP Simon Bridges has acted on recommendations on Health and Safety reforms welcomed by business and unions.

As New Zealand is twice as dangerous than Australia and four times more dangerous than the UK to work in, these reforms are positive signs Kiwis are sick of our high death rate and serious harm accidents in the workplace.

Reforms introduce stronger penalties, the maximum is now $500,000 or two years imprisonment, and will increase to $600,000 or five years. As the penalty stands now, it has never improved our statistics, and the added $100,000 will probably make little difference.

I agree with Mr Bridges, we owe these

reforms to the families of 75 people killed each year in NZ workplaces, with two in the last week. The word ‘family’ rarely enters our thinking when we arrive at work. Until we can get into the heads of every worker that safety is ultimately our own responsibility, every act is our own choice, then accidents will continue.

How many of us have ever thought ‘I wonder what it would be like for my partner and children if I did not come home from work tonight’ or ‘I wonder how my family would manage for the rest of their lives if I never ever made it home from work again’.

How long will farce continue?

At an August 9, 2013, Medical Women’s International Association conference in Seoul, South Korea, an unsaid officer shutdown a workshop on ‘abortion complications’ just before eminent Doctors were to speak.

Shut down it was, but not before Dr Martha Shuping, a psychiatrist, spoke of researchers on both sides of the abortion issue agreeing that “some women”, such as those “pressured into abortion: lacking social and emotional support; and adolescents”, have “increased risk of post-abortion mental problems”.

Quite an admission after years of the abortion industry talking down the abortion-mental health connection.

In its context, Shuping’s “some women” at risk of subsequent mental problems could be a low figure like 10

per cent of all abortions. Astonishing then that in NZ “some women” account for 98 per cent of all abortions, all authorised on the grounds of “risk to the mental health of the patient”.

NZ abortion figures in 2012 were 14,745, of which, according to the above, only 2 per cent, or less than 300, apparently had no risk to their mental health.

Meanwhile, the 98 per cent, the “some women” group, must have been either of predictable mental instability, or prepared to have their certifying consultants lie for them.

How long must this farce, killing nearly 15,000 of our children each year, continue?

Legislation does nothing to put thoughts into our minds of how accidents affect our families - attitudes do.

The greatest protection we have from being injured is our own attitude.

Congratulations to the young lady who managed to drive more than 300km to visit us in Tauranga while ‘dead to the world’ and without incident.

thank the gentleman who assisted my mum and aunty at Chinatown restaurant in Fraser Cove by assisting and administering CPR on my aunty until an ambulance arrived. I would also like to thank staff and management of Chinatown for their assistance and clean up after the event. Economics overshadow risk Momentarily, I was heartened by the headline ‘Recognising responsibility to community’ (Weekend Sun, August 16). But as I read on I realised what I was reading was not recognition but whitewash written for an unsuspecting urban population.

Mr Chapman failed to mention that hi-cane has been detected in air 70 kilometres from the spray site, how safe does that make anyone feel in the Bay of Plenty area.

I provided a submission for the ERMA review in 2006 and attended the meeting. The report

provided, as a result of many submissions, did not (from memory) state that the risks were very low,. It stated there were risks but they were overshadowed by the economic advantages provided by hi-cane. So, for the sake of a wealthy few, we are all exposed to this substance similar to the defoliant Agent Orange.

In the 2006 report it was also noted that there would be another review in five years. We have never been notified about another review and I would like Mr Chapman to

identify why this review has never happened.

This current hi-cane season we have yet again been affected by hi-cane overspray with a healthy two-year-old hedge losing its leaves just days after a hi-cane spray by one of our neighbours. What is interesting is that the hotline noted

by Mr Chapman is it is more interested in the notification process of intented spraying than the actual damage done to our property. It always comes back to the victim having to prove that it was hi-cane, rather like a rape victim having to prove who the rapist was. In reality, it is the whole Bay of Plenty that is the victim with the continued use of this spray.

Scientific testing needed Fifty short years ago, doctors were fronting promotions of cigarette smoking, saying it was a great way to relax and there was no proof that it was a health risk to human beings.

We now know the truth about the cancer causing effects of inhaling poisonous chemicals. Class action law suits have followed.

Could the same be said about the inhalation of other poisonous chemicals such as hi-cane?

I guess time will tell and the sooner

we the innocent public, who are passive inhalers of this pirau poison, are told the truth via scientific studies, the sooner we can stop hi-cane.

Surely, our Bay of Plenty Regional Council, who once carried the name Environment BOP should be doing just that and protecting our environment by scientifically testing hi-cane and its effects. I will be voting for the candidate who promises to do just that.

Kiwifruit industry: we don’t approve the use of chemical The kiwifruit industry does not approve the use of chemicals. Government has set up a two-stage regulatory approval process with the Environmental Protection Authority (formerly ERMA) assessing any risks to public health and the environment, with the Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Group at the Ministry for Primary Industries setting conditions of use. Hydrogen cyanamide or Hicane was approved for use in 2006 by ERMA. So independent assessment has been conducted.

The 2006 Environmental Risk Management Agency (ERMA) review of this product found the risks and costs to society and the community are very low.

It concluded hydrogen cyanamide provides massive benefits for the economy and poses only negligible to medium risks to the environment and human health and safety – risks which are adequately managed by existing rules and industry initiatives. I note that Hi-cane is in no way similar to Agent Orange.

NZKGI is committed to safe spraying and we take complaints very seriously.

94) Big Gigs – the Boss is back! Being in the crowd waiting for the start of a Bruce Springsteen concert is a disorienting experience. A noise emanates from the stands and it’s the sound of thousands of people all shouting “Bruuuuuuuce”. The problem is that when that many people shout “Bruuuuuuce” it sounds for all the world like “Booooooooo”. First time you hear it, it’s a bit alarming.

Danny and the Big Man may be no longer with him (or us) but with Bruce hauling a big band – around a dozen by all reports – with him, this should be one for the ages. It isn’t just an accident that since the mid-seventies people have been calling him the best live act on the planet. Tickets for the only Auckland show go on sale on Monday 26 from Ticketmaster though the actual concert isn’t until March 1 2014.

The festival also sees the return of the fabulous Tattletale Saints, another show from local rock band Nine Mile Stone, more local content in the form of Carol Storey and her band Timara, who will be performing original waiata in Maori and English, daft punk from Die Roten Punkte (The Red Dots), the uncrowned and possibly fictitious comedic royalty of the Berlin underground indie rock scene, Canada’s Shuffle Demons, Christchurch’s The Eastern (with Lyndon Puffin) and much much more...

At last, you’re thinking, something useful... Here are five very different musical things happening in town this weekend: Reggae band Cornerstone Roots are playing at Brewer’s Bar in Mount Maunganui on Saturday 24. It’s an R18 show and tickets are $15. They should still be available on the door.

On Sunday Too Many Chiefs are coming to the Te Puna Memorial Hall.

They comprise Wayne Mason (writer of “Nature”), Andrew London (Hot Club Sandwich), Rob Joass (Hobnail Boots) and Laura Collins (The Back Porch Blues Band). Doors open at 7pm, concert at 7.30pm. Admission is $20.

And some not-one-off events: Santi Rebagliati and Derrin Richards are playing at Mexica (once Der Bier Haus) on Saturday night, 9.00pm; soul/samba/funk/blues/jazz band U4RIA are playing at the Mount’s Ivory Premium Urban Lounge from 4.00 to 7.00pm as they do every Sunday afternoon; and the Uke Club of New Zealand has it’s regular last Sunday of each month club gathering at the RSA. Starring: Aaron Eckhart, Liana Liberato, Olga Kurylenko - Dir: Philipp Stolzl The Expatriate – known as Erased in America – isn’t really anything special. Its plot, satisfyingly complex though it is, isn’t anything you haven’t seen before and there are no new wiz-bang effects. But it shows the difference between so much of the recycled dross around and what a film looks like when it is done well.

Aaron Eckhart plays a security-testing guy working in Belgium, living with his rather grumpy teenage daughter. Without warning he finds the company he has been working for has disappeared along with all record of his having worked for it. Oh, and everyone who worked with him seems to be dead. The pair are soon

on the run with assassins around every corner trying to kill them for reasons unknown.

Fortunately Aaron’s character used to be a CIA black ops agent so can do some ass-kicking in return when the men (and women) behind the international conspiracy are revealed.

So, like I said, nothing really new. This sort of thing seems to happen to Liam Neeson all the time. Director Stolzl is well-regarded for both his thriller North Face and love story Goethe and brings both elements to bear here, keeping the action moving along while never losing sight of the human element and relationship between father and daughter.

Olympus Has Fallen is a really really bad film. It is, however, a whole bunch of fun, if your tastes run towards the very silly. It’s one of the two (yes, Hollywood, good work again on that!) current films about sieges of the White House and this time it’s those naughty North Koreans (apparently changed at the last minute from Chinese after Kim Jong-un became the new “Great Satan”) who destroy some of Washington’s finest monuments before holding the Prez and his advisers hostage.

Only Gerard Butler can save the day. Yes, it’s Die Hard In The White House!

There are so many quality animated features around these days that people are getting a lot more discerning about them. It’s no longer enough to have eye-popping visuals, which is a shame for Escape From Planet Earth , which boasts exactly that but falls short in almost every other area, presenting a story that is predictable and messageheavy. The plot has a couple of cute blue aliens trying to do exactly what the title says after being stranded on what they call “the dark planet”. Actually, one (the brash hero) is stranded, his brother (the heroic nerd) is trying to save him. Possibly good for under-eights.

It’s a slow journey through the weirdly unsettling 9 backroads 4 of 1 off-the-map America, with flashes of quick 9 7 editing suggesting Bad Things in store. Sure enough it gets increasingly hallucinatory before going the full Lynch in the nightmare final third. Strong strange stuff.

Not being an historian I had blithely assumed that Hitler (Adolf, “the most despised man of the 20th century”, etc) had died in a Berlin bunker in 1945. Not so claims Grey Wolf , which postulates an escape via U-boat (with Eva at his side) to Argentina and eventually a lonely death in hiding in 1962. It’s based on a book so it must be true. Who knows? I won’t evaluate how reliable the “testimonies” are, given that they are read by actors and presented with no background or verification.

But I can say that the recreations are laughable and the storytelling incredibly slow and mostly boring.

Royal NZ Navy Band to blow up a storm

Members of the Royal New Zealand Navy Band playing at the end of the month.

The Royal New Zealand Navy Band is presenting a “not to be missed” concert in Tauranga at the end of August.

The band is featuring as guests during the New Zealand Concert Band Festival at Bethlehem College; and is using the opportunity to perform what will be a highly-varied and entertaining public concert on Friday, August 30.

Under the baton of new director of music, Lieutenant commander Owen Clarke, the Navy in Concert will showcase the multifaceted Navy Band, featuring its soloists and drummers as well as the talented brass and woodwind players. Music played will range from classics to jazz, Tchaikovsky to Glenn Miller.

The Navy Band is regarded as one of the coun-

try’s finest military bands. A recent tour of the North Island has encouraged the band to present more public events out of Auckland, so the trip to Tauranga is the beginning of this new approach.

Owen is excited about the band presenting more public concerts.

“The Navy Band is a fantastic ensemble and performing to the public is what we are about. The band thrives on it. This concert will be entertaining, fun and with music to suit all tastes,” says Owen.

“The concert is suitable for children and we encourage the audience, and kids, to get involved; conducting the band or singing along.”

The concert is at Bethlehem Arts Centre on Friday, August 30 from 7.30pm. Tickets cost $15 for adults, $5 for children and students or NZCBA members.

Cellist’s extraordinary talent Cellist Dominic Lee is a finalist in Bay of Plenty Symphonia’s Rising Stars Concerto Competition. He is one of four contestants who will play a chosen movement from a standard concerto, accompanied by the orchestra.

Dominic has had an extraordinary year to date, winning several competitions both in New Zealand and internationally. His top achievements on the international scene are overall winner of the Viotti Valsesia International Music Competition in Italy; and his performance in the winners’ concert saw him win the Monterosa Kawai Prize. He is also overall winner at the Seoul National Music Competition in South Korea. This competition included woodwind, strings and singing.

Dominic recently took part in the Tauranga Performing

Arts Competitions where he won the Major Programme class.

For the last three years, Dominic has been studying with cellist Edith Salzmann, a professor at Canterbury University, as a scholarship recipient at the National Academy of Music. This year he was awarded the Special Programme double scholarship which enabled him to compete internationally.

Dominic is in his final year at Bethlehem College and next year will head to university to continue his dream of becoming a world-class cellist.

He plays the third movement of Saint Saëns ‘Concerto No.1’ in A minor and says: “I believe the third movement of this work is very dramatic and passionate. It makes me one with the cello and makes the audience connect with the music.

It makes me feel what real beauty is”.

Dominic Lee’s talent with the cello sees him compete internationally.

Forgiven – so forgive in like measure Ephesians 4:32 says we are to "forgive one another, as God in Christ forgave you".

Literally, forgive one another just as, even as, or in like manner, as God in Christ forgave you.

Our reason or motive for forgiving others is we are recipients of forgiveness. We have been forgiven much, not because of anything of our own merit, but because Christ was the perfect sacrifice for sin. As recipients of forgiveness, who have been forgiven much, we have no right whatsoever to withhold forgiveness from those who have offended or hurt us.

The text above says "as God in Christ forgave you" which is past tense because God has already forgiven us in Christ – if we have been genuinely born again through genuine repentance and faith in Christ.

Colossians 2:13–14 says "And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by cancelling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands.

This He set aside, nailing it to the cross".

If we come to salvation in Christ through genuine repentance, we are forgiven every sin that we committed before we were born again.

Even though our sin was

red as scarlet, Jesus paid the price and in Him we are made white as snow.

The blood of Jesus doesn’t cover our sin – it washes it away. God removes that sin as far as the east is from the west and He calls it to remembrance no more.

Therefore, we are to forgive and forget, because we are to "forgive one another, as God in Christ forgave you".

Isaiah 53:5–6 says of Jesus: "But He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all".

That’s how we are forgiven. God Himself took our sin and placed it on His Son. Our sin was punished in Christ so in Christ we might be forgiven.

If God has done that for us, how can we choose to refuse forgiveness towards anyone else?

We have no right to do so.

It is comparatively easy for buyers to fall into the trap of non-committal. Especially if they inspect a wide range of property types and locations. You may become scared of signing on the dotted line. Fearful that the next house may be better than the one you just saw that seemed perfect, but was it? Funny how rooms shrink and decor deteriorates in the deep of the night.

My suggestion is to make a list of those things that are a must for you. For example, number one on a family’s list perhaps it is a particular school zone.
