Lest we forget… where we stash the cash The reason the country is so indebted: The politicians can’t remember where the money is.

They apparently can’t keep track of their own money. How can we expect them to look after ours?

Just this week, David Shearer joined a long list of politicians who have forgotten to declare stashes of dosh.

Reminds us of the old country song: “I Forgot to Remember to Forget.”

At least 50 grand is a lot to have forgotten about. Some speculate it could be as much as half a million. I’m pretty sure all RR readers would know exactly where

their dollars were stashed, if they had that much sitting around in mysterious accounts somewhere.

We all forget things. It’s only human. I forgot to put the recycling out on Wednesday. Some people forget they should work for a living. President Clinton forgot he had sex with THAT woman. My wife once pulled into school to drop off the kids, but found they weren’t in the back seat; (it was school holidays).

I recently found forgotten change in the

glovebox that was an emergency Route K toll payment. I once forgot my wedding anniversary and have the scar to prove it.

But never, ever would I forget about a five or six figure sum in a bank account.

I am still wracked with anguish every day, trying to find four dollars of bonus bonds that Gran gave me in 1971. I’m not sure where they are, they have never won a prize, but the major difference is, I KNOW that I have them. Unlike Shearer, and the many forgetters he has savaged before him… they’ve forgotten they have it! Not a good look for people trusted with our hard earned taxes.

We don’t take much notice of what John Banks says, but this week I have to agree that Shearer should resign. Banks was lambasted for “forgetting” about his Dotcom campaign donation from the big guy. The howls of outrage from Shearer were unrelenting: Banks should stand down, he insisted.

Now the boot is on the other foot. Shearer has forgotten about his secret stash not once, but four years in a row.

“This is appalling behaviour for someone who claims to have such high ethical standards, let alone from someone who wants to be Prime Minister. If he’s reckless with his own banks accounts, how can he be trusted with taxpayers’ money?” says Banks.

Shearer should apply his own ethical standards to himself and stand down.

They pass it off as “brain fade” but RR believes if you can’t remember how much you’ve got, you’re being paid too much.

Maybe that’s the trouble with Cyprus. It hasn’t really run out of money; the politicians have just forgotten where it is.

A caller to the RR Cashline (a service we have established for people wanting to report the whereabouts of large amounts of money they’ve suddenly

remembered) says those living in the Western Bay shouldn’t be so worried about the state of the Western BOP District Council, considering the plight of Cyprus.

Ratepayers’ pocket

He says Western Bay is in debt between $150m and $190m, (depending on whether you remember the odd $40m borrowed somewhere else) which our caller says is about $7700-$9500 per ratepayer; based on around 20,000 households in the region. There are a tad more ratepayers than that, counting industrial and commercial… which we will forget about for the convenience of keeping the arithmetic simple.

Mr Ratepayer suggests a one off payment from each sucker, er, ratepayer of about eight grand would clear it all up nicely. Sure, we’ll just dip into our bank accounts in the USA which we’d forgotten about until this week.

The situation isn’t much rosier in Tauranga City.

There are 48,000 residential customers and 3000 commercial. The city debt is around $390m (or $460m if you believe the council bashers who say a large whack is forgotten, or creatively unaccounted) so according to my razor sharp Tauranga Primary School level maths, that’s also at least $8000 per household.

Mountains of money

Now if you all took the lead from Mr Shearer or Mr Key or Mr Banks, or the hordes of politicians with buried mountains of forgotten money; and had a good ferret around the dark recesses of the piggy bank, you might just uncover a long lost account or shares worth a few thou or mil, just waiting to be cashed in, so then everyone can bail out the local councils!

Or, a win in Bonus Bonds could sort out your share of the council debt in one lump payment.

Yeah, right.

In the case of Mr Hotchin, formerly of Hanover Finance, there’s the option to sell off the bach at Boatshed Bay on Waiheke Island, reported to be worth about $9.8m and owned by a trust of which he’s the beneficiary. This week the five bedroom mansion on four hectares, with 100m of private beachfront, was back on the market.

Originally bought, no doubt with the proceeds of investments of thousands of Grans who now wish they’d bought Bonus Bonds instead.

‘Slow down’ Call for quick action on busy road

Concerned Cambridge Road residents have convinced Tauranga City Council to act quickly to try to reduce the speed limit on Cambridge Road.

The 80km/h narrow and sometimes winding section from Tauriko to Moffat Road is the scene of frequent near misses and road rage incidents caused by the faster traffic’s inability to pass while locals slow for their driveways.

Cambridge Road residents effectively ‘gate-crashed’ the council’s submissions process on a number of speed limit changes about the city that didn’t include Cambridge Road.

Legally required advertising for submissions on the proposed speed limit changes was posted only in

the limited circulation APN paper on December 12, with submissions closing January 21. A public notice was also published on December 13.

By the closing date on January 21, 44 submissions were received – 40 of them with concerns over traffic speed on Cambridge Road.

From Elder Lane to Cambridge Road, the wider and safer Moffat Road has 46 residences and one school accessing the 60km/h .

Cambridge Road from Moffat Road to Tauriko is 3.1km and has a speed limit of 80km/h. Over the distance there are 328 residences, an early childhood education centre and a garden centre.

Cambridge Road has 2.7 times more vehicles per kilometre accessing it than Moffat Road yet the speed limit is 20km/h higher, says Paul Anselmi in his submission.

The speed makes slowing down for their home turn-off extremely

dangerous because the following traffic has to slow suddenly from 80km/h to a near stand-still. In most places there is nowhere to pass a turning vehicle.

“There is chaos at Plane Tree Lane every morning as school buses stop for children. It is only a matter of time before there is a major accident with one of these school buses loaded with children,” says Paul.

Other submitters say there are no footpaths, cycleways or pedestrian crossings while others spoke of near misses and screaming road rage.

Resident Ian Craig says there have been several accidents on the bend by his property and he is very worried. One of them closed the road for three hours, he says.

Councillors decided the discussion with NZTA over Cambridge Road needs to start soon.

Marine research ramps up From Rena and algal biofuels to marine biodiscovery – the University of Waikato’s current research in and around the Bay of Plenty will be discussed at a free event in Tauranga next week.

Chair of Coastal Science professor Chris Battershill will give an update on diverse areas of research spanning both environmental and human health at Café Scientifique on Monday.

Findings from the latest surveys on kaimoana from around the

Bay and how the environment has responded to Rena will be summarised, as well as new work being launched this year in the area of biodiscovery.

Slow take-off

Aviation enthusiasts Lance Raitt, Bruce Chapman, Bob Anstis and Adam Cruickshank are among the team helping rebuild Classic Flyer’s Aermacchi jet.

Crates of Aermacchi parts are being fastidiously reassembled by a group of aviation enthusiasts at Classic Flyers with hopes that the fighter jet will soon return to the air.

Project coordinator Bruce Chapman, who is overseeing the effort by a dozen aviation enthusiasts, describes it as a slow process with work needing to be approved by Civil Aviation Authority inspectors at key points.

But Bruce, a pilot himself, says they have made reasonable progress since beginning work three weeks ago on the disassembled Aermacchi MB-339 jet which was gifted to the aviation museum by

the RNZAF last year.

“We’ve got the wings on and it’s now sitting on its wheels. Then once the engine’s in and the tail’s on it will start to look like an aeroplane,” says Bruce.

The dozen-strong group of enthusiasts, with members including pilots - like Bruce – and aircraft engineers – meets on Wednesdays and Fridays at the museum to work on the plane.

Most of the guys are retired and worked together on the museum’s earlier Kittyhawk restoration project.

“It’s ready for its first inspection, we really can’t go an further – so we are going to have an engineer to sign off what has been done and then we need an engineer to be here when eh engine goes in.”

Bruce estimates the project could

be completed within about three weeks if the team was working on it fulltime – but says it is more likely to be at least a couple of months before they are ready to start the engine.

Because the aircraft and engine have been kept in “extremely good condition” by the air force he is certain they will be able to get it flying again but is unsure how long it will take: “It could be a year before the first flying, but we would like to think it would be shorter.”

While they group waits for an inspection before continuing work on the jet, they turn their attention to the lower priority restoration of a de Havilland Venom jet which crashed in Masterton two years ago for a static display.

Teaching old dogs new tricks A total of 212 people have been caught drinkdriving in the Western Bay of Plenty since the beginning of the year to March 13.

Police say the only person to blame for the offence is the person who gets behind a wheel drunk.

A report released by auditor-general Phillipa Smith, says drink-driving and speed are the two leading causes of serious road crashes in New Zealand.

Acting senior sergeant Wayne Hunter believes the report is entirely correct in respect to rural drinkdriving.

“The big question is how do we change the culture of the rural community into realising drink-driving is no longer acceptable?

“That is what we are working on now.”

Wayne says people who are caught drink-driving only have one person to blame – themselves.

“There are always alternatives to driving following drinking and the old adage ‘I won’t get caught’ is no longer the case and in reality now, if you drink and drive, sooner or later you will be caught.

“To the ones who think it will never happen to them, consider this: no licence may jeopardise your work and will inconvenience your family/friends, who may have to drive you around for a minimum of six months.”

People also run the risk of having their car impounded and forfeiting it to the crown.

“All for the sake of not wanting to pay a taxi fare or having a sober driver.”

Council boob banning bylaw passed Tauranga City Council’s special bylaw aimed The changes to Tauranga’s Street Use and Public Places were called for after promoter Steve Crow rode at banning topless women riding through Bylaw rough shod over it when he brought the Boobs on Bikes town on motorbikes was passed this week. parade to Tauranga in August 2011.

Councillors tried to stop it by denying a parade permit, but were unable to. Under the old bylaw a parade could only be dealt with as a traffic management issue.

Claims that the parade is offensive are ineffectual because the New Zealand High Court has ruled that it is not an offence for a woman to bare her breasts in public.

The revamped section 19 of the bylaw still has offensive as a reason to ban a parade, but it has gone a step further and given as a reason for banning parades an activity that may give rise to some public disorder – for example, whether viewed objectively, it may have a reasonable likelihood of dissuading others from enjoying their right to use the public place by entering or remaining in it.

In other words, if the council staff think some people might want to stay away from town while the Boobs on Bikes parade goes past, or because of any other assembly in town, then that is a reason to ban it. A parade can also be banned now if council reasonably believes the activity will unreasonably impede pedestrian or vehicular traffic access to or along any public place or to any shops or premises.

“We will probably end up in court anyway, but we will have some grounds,” says corporate solicitor Joanne Gread.

Nipper numbers Years of having one of the country’s largest groups of Nippers is paying off for Omanu Surf Life Saving Club.

Sunday mornings with hundreds of parents on Omanu Beach encouraging children to do their best in the Nippers fun water skills programme for under-14-year-olds has built up a solid base of talented youth in the club.

The club’s success at the recent nationals at Mount Maunganui – where Omanu was the fourth ranked club on medals – is a sign of a rising force in the Bay. While the club’s score of 53 points was less than half its Western Bay rivals of Mount Maunganui (136) and Papamoa (122), Omanu Club captain Sue Cochrane says it was a great to see the club finish so well.

“I’m sure we haven’t made it that high in the tables before, it’s a great boost.”

While the club has been a major force in the master’s grade in recent years, she says there had

been a bit of a gap with a lack of younger competitive members leaving the club weaker in the main competition in recent years.

“I think it’s just that our numbers are coming up through the ranks. We’ve got some great talent coming up. It’s just developing the athletes through.”

Next month the club is sending its largest team for many years to the Australian championships, with five young athletes and coach Simon Wills heading to the Gold Coast to represent the club.

Papamoa and Mount Maunganui clubs are also sending teams.

“It’s going to be a learning experience for everyone. Compared to the competitions here it’s on another scale entirely.”

While she says the recent nationals at the Mount attracted about 1700 competitors, she says the Australian event will attract about 8000.

“It’s obviously going to make it extremely tough, even for our top athletes,” says Sue.

An elderly couple are in Tauranga Hospital after the car they were in flipped in a Welcome Bay carpark.

Emergency services were called to the carpark behind Caltex Service station on Welcome Bay Road just after 12pm on Monday where an 89-year-old man and 88-year-old woman were trapped in a Honda Jazz on its roof.

Firefighters used the jaws of life to free the pair from the upside down car before they were treated by St John Ambulance.

Man dies after truck rolls Pukehina truck driver Darren Hockly died after being crushed by a fertiliser truck that rolled on a Te Matai Road dairy farm this week.

Emergency services were called to the farm about 20km from Te Puke near Te Ranga School around midday on Tuesday.

They arrived to find the 40-year-old pinned beneath the Spreadmaster Transport truck which had rolled 8metres down a bank.

Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and police Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit is investigating.

Shock roadside fatal shooting Police are hunting for a gunman who shot dead roadworker George Taiaroa in the Kinleith Forest. The 67-year-old was shot on a rural stretch of Tram Road near Atiamuri about 3.20pm on Tuesday.

Police say George was at the northern end of a one-lane bridge when he signalled for a vehicle to stop to allow a logging truck to cross.

As the logging truck cleared the bridge the vehicle then crossed the bridge heading towards Tirohanga Road.

George was found shot on the ground. More than 30 police officers are hunting for the gunman.

Kenya: survivors kept quiet

Emails from the board chair of Bethlehem College revealed two students who survived the fatal crash in Kenya withheld information from African police about who was driving.

TV3’s Campbell Live revealed new information showing two students knew fellow 18-year-old student David Fellows was driving when the van crashed. It was initially thought Kenyan man Christopher Mmata was driving.

An email from chairman of the board of trustees Greg Hollister-Jones dated January 28, obtained by Campbell Live under the Official Information Act, states two survivors of the crash who did not lose consciousness knew David was the driver.

Greg told SunLive Campbell Live failed to put the information in context as the two students were in a “distressing” environment.

A Tauranga business is paying for repairs to Welcome Bay Plunket rooms after a vandalism attack.

Todd Gower Funeral Services is offering to pay to have the wall of the Welcome Bay Plunket rooms fixed after the cladding on the outside of the building was kicked in.

Volunteers arrived at work last week and were devastated to see someone had kicked holes in the wall.

Committee member Cath Waller’s heart sunk when she thought the money they had been busy fundraising would have to go to fixing more vandalism.

The latest attack is one in a series on Welcome Bay Plunket’s premises.

“We had just finished paying for our heat pumps, which were vandalised in November.”

Cath thought the money they had been fundraising to fill their coffers back up would have to go towards fixing the damage but Tauranga’s Todd Gower Funeral Services has stepped in and offered

to pay for the damage.

“It’s one way we can give back to the community,” says funeral director and Welcome Bay resident Paula Williamson.

“My oldest child is 22 now and I have used Welcome Bay Plunket.”

Both Paula and Cath agree it is all about giving back to the community.

“People think we don’t do this sort of thing because we are funeral directors, but we are real people just like everyone else and love to be able to give something back to the community.”

Sentence closure The sentencing of her former partner for sexual crimes against their children has brought closure to one chapter of a Bay of Plenty woman’s life.

The man, who has name suppression, was sentenced to 17 years in jail with a minimum non-parole period of 10 years by Judge Louis Bidois in Tauranga District Court. The man was charged with four counts of unlawful sexual connection with a male under 12-years-old, two counts of unlawful sexual connection of a female under 12-years-old and two counts of ill-treating a child, among other charges.

The children’s mother, who can’t be named, says she can now move on with her life. She had her children taken from her six years ago when the sexual offending came to light. “I have known him for 16 years and it hasn’t been a good 16 years.”

During their time together, he threatened her on numerous occasions, often with a gun.

“There would be times when I would have to leave the children behind and run to a neighbour’s house.

“I had no idea what he was doing to the children.”

She says now he is behind bars for a long time, she can move forward with her life.

Paddlers prep for challenge ahead Tauranga Harbour will boil with paddlers’ strokes on Saturday when up to 400 outrigger canoe added motivation – to have to go to training to meet the needs of a team paddlers from as far as Australia take to the water in the Tauranga Harbour Challenge races.

Among those giving the event her best will be Tauranga waka ama icon Corrina Gage, who has competed internationally for more than 20 years, as well as becoming a sought-after coach and leader of the sport.

Corrina was initially attracted to the sport for the advantages of training in a team after competing internationally in the solo pursuit of kayaking.

Handing on baton of hope

More than 400 Western Bay of Plenty residents will take to the paths around Tauranga’s waterfront to take a stand against cancer in the Relay for Life on Saturday.

The fundraising relay, which will see 36 teams of at least 10 members race around a 500m track on the waterfront for almost 24 hours, is returning to Tauranga for the first time in five years.

The event will be lead off by Tauranga councillor Tony Christiansen, the event’s patron, and Mayor Stuart Crosby, when the relay starts at 2pm on Saturday.

Tony welcomed the chance to get

involved in the event as patron and he is determined to cover as many laps as possible.

“We are all affected by cancer in some way or other, whether we have it had ourselves or know somebody who has. It doesn’t discriminate, so it’s great to be able to support the Cancer Society for everything they do.”

He encouraged people to get involved in the relay, or just by supporting the cause and the stalls at the event.

Waikato-Bay of Plenty Cancer Society communications assistant Sarah Fitzpatrick says they are

hoping the event will raise $60,000 from team fundraising and stall sales on the weekend, which would make it the second biggest fundraiser behind Daffidol Day. The event is returning after a call from Tauranga people. Sarah says all money raised would be spent on support services in the Waikato Bay of Plenty area.

Sarah says teams range from families to groups of friends or businesses, in the relay which has people running through the night which “represents cancer never sleeps”.

The relay is being held at the Tauranga waterfront carpark.

Outrigger canoeing’s long-distance ocean racing events also suited her.

She has had a long series of successes following her first race in 1991 and continues to race in top international events, with events coming up in Australia and Hawaii this year.

This weekend she is paddling as part of the six-member Tauranga Moana Outrigger Canoe Club women’s crew she has been training. Corrina loves the satisfaction of fostering the sport

and helping paddlers develop just as much as she enjoys competing herself.

“We are aiming to finish top five – that would be a great outcome if all the good crews turn up. We will be using it to step towards winning in the future.

They want to develop their long-distance racing to compete overseas.”

Sixty years of contribution The volunteers of Mount Maunganui RSA Women’s Section cater for many functions, but this weekend it is their turn to be waited on as members celebrate their 60th birthday.

On Sunday March 24 Mount Maunganui RSA Women’s Section members will celebrate 60 years of contribution to the community.

Hundreds of volunteers help to collect donations for charities including the RSA’s Poppy Day, Cancer Society, Guide Dog Association and TrustPower rescue helicopter.

Brenda Smith says with approximately 700 members, they are the largest women’s section in the country.

“It’s wonderful to think we’ve been there and we’re still going strong. We have to consider the amount of work that’s gone on over the last 60 years.”

Brenda is expecting 300 Mount Maunganui members to attend the birthday celebrations, including the district president and national women’s president attending from Northland.

The Women’s Section, formed in 1953, has catered for many functions including birthdays, weddings, funerals, sports club Christmas parties, and award ceremonies for members.

A meeting is held every last Wednesday of the month followed by an afternoon tea catered for by the members themselves.

“Normally our ladies do all the catering but we are having a day off that day,” says Brenda.

Elaine Cook has been a member for nearly a year and says she loves being a part of the Women’s Section.

“Going to the meetings and mixing with the ladies has just been a real joy for me to volunteer my services.

“I just love being with the ladies and giving something back to the community that we all do caringly and lovingly and we’re looking forward to the 60th birthday.”

Mount Maunganui indoor bowls on the move Club Mount Maunganui is moving its indoor bowls from Tuesday nights to Sunday afternoons.

The plan is to retain current members and attract a younger

crowd, says organiser Allen Robinson.

The club’s membership numbers have been dwindling in recent winters because many members don’t like coming out

on cold nights. “Also, we hope more young people will join us for a roll up.”

The first afternoon session is on Sunday, April 7 at 1pm.

Connected community Brinkley Road residents are getting to know their neighbours this weekend in support of Neighbours Day Aotearoa 2013.

Approximately 75 per cent of the people living in the 48 houses on Brinkley Road, Otumoetai, are members of the Brinkley Road and Hunter Way Neighbourhood Support Group.

On Sunday March 24 group members are getting together to celebrate Neighbours Day Aotearoa with a barbecue and social get-together.

Supported nationally by community-focused organisations including Lifewise, Inspiring Communities, Neighbourhood Support and the Mental Health Foundation, Neighbours Day Aotearoa encourages New Zealanders to go one step further in getting to know their neighbours on

one day, or weekend, of the year.

Neighbourhood Support provides support for all neighbourhood and rural support groups throughout New Zealand.

For almost one year the Brinkley Road and Hunter Way Neighbourhood Support Group has been making homes, streets, neighbourhoods and communities a safer place to live.

Group co-ordinator David Capes says getting together with your neighbours benefits the community.

“We’ve got quite a good street and it sort of helps people get together in a social atmosphere. We have a caring street whereby neighbours are caring for each other and looking out for each other and generally want to talk, which is difficult in this day in age.”

Bay champs head to Auckland Bay of Plenty dance group Urban Dance has qualified for the National Street Dance Championship in Auckland next month.

The group defeated 10 crews from across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty at a regional competition in Hamilton last weekend to come the region’s 2013 champions.

Of the group’s 21 dancers, who train up to 15 hours each week, 10 took to

the stage for the first time – pouring their hearts onto the stage.

They return to training now, with the hopes of success at the nationals on April 25-27 where more than 60 crews from around New Zealand will compete.

Urban Dance is fundraising for the $600 needed to cover transport and accommodation costs, with Easter raffles, performances and garage sales.

Solo sailing mission EASTERSPECIAL From front cover

Two different sailing companions in the space of 12 months has, at least for now, firmed up one thing in Trent Rippey’s mind – his immediate future on the water lies in single-handed yachting.

Trent, one of the new crop of rising stars on the national sailing scene, is back training and racing in a Laser Radial after a three year hiatus, finishing third (youth) in a recent training regatta in Auckland after campaigning a 29er high-powered skiff for a couple of years around the globe.

The 16-year-old Tauranga Boys’ College student spent the bulk of last year teamed with Auckland’s Alex Munro, with the pair bagging the national 29er title before taking their talents offshore, claiming seventh at the British youth nationals and second at the Irish youths before a meritorious seventh at the youth world championships in Dublin Bay, Ireland.

Trent and Alex parted ways when they got back to New Zealand, with the talented Tauranga teen jumping in a boat with his brother Cole, three years his junior but in charge of steering the boat.

Logistically it was a dream combo – no more three hour car rides to Auckland to spend the weekend out on the water. But in practical terms it was a struggle as the brothers battled each other to get heard.

“It’s been good and bad sailing with my brother. We hadn’t spent a lot of time in the boat together so practicing out on the harbour was as easy as chucking the boat on the trailer rather than driving all the way to Auckland.

“But there were a few arguments and we didn’t always agree on the right strategy.”

It didn’t help that 13-yearold Cole was skipper but the junior partner in terms of age.

“We probably had a 50/50 say out on the water but we’ve come to the conclusion it’s better if I sail by myself now, or with someone who’s not my brother. We get on real well as brothers but all that changed when we got on the water together.”

Single-handed success, should it come in a Laser Radial, would be nothing new for Trent. As a 14-year-old he was the talk of junior yachting as he dismantled a 59-strong P class fleet to bag a boot-load of silverware.

Trent is targeting next year’s youth world champs in a Laser Radial and possibly the open worlds, with a strong Tauranga Boys’ College team also aiming for success in the secondary schools nationals and the inter-dominions.

Mondayising a good step for everyone Initially I thought I might not support the bill Mondayising Anzac and Waitangi day as before I entered Parliament I part-owned and operated three retail outlets where I hired 15 employees and I was doing the mental sums in my head of the wages that I would have to meet.

However on fully investigating and reflecting on the issue, I changed my stance. I saw that in the next six years public holidays would be Mondayised just twice—Anzac Day in 2015 and Waitangi Day in February 2016.

We have had a golden summer in Tauranga and Mount Maunganui and our area has benefited with record numbers of visitors. For areas of great tourist potential such as the Bay, the prospect of an extra-long weekend reaps huge financial rewards for many businesses. In the case of Tauranga, recovering from the disastrous effects of the Rena and facing the ongoing financial shortfalls to the region caused by PSA (yes, another National Government biosecurity blunder) then the opportunity of additional commerce because of the long weekend will benefit so many in the area, including hoteliers, restaurateurs, tourist guides, and tourist operators.

It will be a bonus as well that Anzac Day 2015 will be the 100th anniversary of the fateful landings at Gallipoli, it is fitting and proper that the sacrifice of our Anzacs will be remembered in a way that includes a full public holiday so that we can fully respect and celebrate the sacrifice the original ANZACs made.

Ensuring that in every year these two important commemorations are marked with a full public holiday for all people is a good step for our nation. People who do not normally work on the day on which Waitangi Day and Anzac Day falls will get the holiday on the Monday, and those who work on the Saturday on Sunday will get that day as a public holiday. Most important, the commemorations at Waitangi and at dawn parades all around our beautiful country will still be observed on 6 February and 25 April.

Exploring sculpture culture with a twist A sculpture exhibition with a difference opened at the Cargo Shed on Tauranga’s Dive Crescent on Thursday.

Ever since I first set eyes on the Cargo Shed I’ve thought it would be a great venue to stage large art exhibitions to complement and enhance the good work that already goes on there.

Included in the exhibition are well-known sculptors, Peter Cramond, Thomas Hansen, Nic Clegg, Ashley Grant, Vivian Keenan, Trevor Clist and Debbie Allen.

The reason for the word “creations” in the headline is that every stall holder at the Cargo Shed has created something for the exhibition.

Cargo Shed manager Kathy Sass has asked that ‘everyone go out on a limb for this one’ and allow their creative juices to flow within their own genres.

There is also a “door” category where artists are invited to create an exciting work of art on a door.

Artists Nick Eggleston, Kevin Butcher and Heike De La Rey, amongst others, are exhibiting in this area.

The exhibition is an initiative to attract more local visitors to the Dive Crescent shed, says Kathy.

“Many of Tauranga’s residents have not seen the new revamped Cargo Shed and how amazing it is. If they come to view exhibi-

tions like this they’ll discover beautiful artistic wares made by our local artists.

“The exhibition is even more unusual when you consider the variety of artistic talent involved.”

The Cargo Shed displays bone carvings, greenstone, women’s knitwear and weaving, art, jewellery, vinyl photo art and ceramics.

Some of the exhibition sculptures are very contemporary, while others are decorative, and involve assembling a variety of objects. The Cargo Shed sculpture exhibition will run until April 7.

‘Grass roots’ estuary care The regional council’s environmental work ranges from projects of national significance like Rotorua lakes to our ‘grass roots’ work with communities to enhance their environment and everyday quality of life.

Tauranga Harbour is an excellent example of how council supports community-driven projects.

Ten estuary care groups give their time and energy to protecting and restoring the harbour. One of their priorities is dealing with the mangroves that can block access to the harbour and its kaimoana.

Mangrove areas are increasing in Tauranga Harbour, mostly due to increased sedimentation. Coun-

cil has directed over $200,000 in the Ten Year Plan to support three new strands of work to control the coverage.

The work includes on-going maintenance of seedlings over expansive areas of the estuary, re-cutting of stumps now becoming exposed in areas where mangroves have been removed, and 13ha additional mature mangrove removal in specific locations.

All of this work requires resource consent, so the council is now working hard to get through this process, helping to find solutions that work for all partners and stakeholders.

The stump re-cutting work will

now be processed for resource consent as Department of Conservation has this week given its support for this to go ahead.

I am really pleased to see how this piece of work is progressing and how it continues to support and address the needs of the community.

This is just one small part of our extensive work to protect and restore the beautiful Tauranga Harbour in partnership with all the amazing groups involved.

Two weekends ago I attended my 14th Bluegreens annual forum at Tatum Park, Levin.

You may well ask – what is the Bluegreens? Well the Bluegreens is the Environmental Policy Advisory Group for the National Party. And what makes it special is that we have always invited the likes of the Environmental Defence Society, Greenpeace, Forest & Bird, WWF and other recognised environmental activists to take an active part in all of our forums. I have to say that we have never been disappointed in their active participation in our environmental policy discussions.

Our annual forums have always been successful, in not only consist-

ently getting over 100 participants to attend, but also getting great media participation. I don’t think any of this year’s participants were disappointed, with excellent panel discussions ranging from the latest ‘RMA Reform’ discussion paper and ‘Freshwater Management’, to ‘Our National Cycleways’ and ‘A Pest Free New Zealand’.

Recently I stepped down after chairing the Bluegreens nationally for over seven years, but I am still actively involved, and chaired a forum session on the RMA reforms with both Minister Amy Adams and Minister Dr Nick Smith in attendance.

While the team remains largely settled from last season, apart from the departure of Sonny Bill Williams, Sona Taumalolo and Kane Thompson, some new additions to the Chiefs family have taken the early stages of the competition by storm.

Newly appointed fullback and super boot Gareth Anscombe currently leads the points table with 70 points and is making every post a winner since arriving at the Chiefs after being unwanted by the Blues this season.

Not for the faint hearted, the gruelling event sees competitors run a 17km course from Wairere Falls to Aongatete Lodge in the Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park.

Victory Events director Jason Cameron says 450 nationwide competitors will line up for the 10am start in what is fast becoming one of the adventure sports of New Zealand.

“Trail running is really one of the growth sports in New Zealand as it breaks down those traditional barriers of elitism in some of the more competitive road running, where everyone can get out on to the line with a variety of competitors.”

The event has been 18 months in the making after

organisers began looking for a place in the North Island to start a new goat race.

“The Kaimais sort of appealed because it’s quite an expansive sort of park and a technical course. It’s very goat-like, rugged, natural beauty that we have got over here and we want to develop it.”

Jason admits just like the original Tongariro event, competitors cannot just turn up on the day and run the event, but is expecting the competitive athletes to complete the course in just over an hour and a half.

Promoted as a running event, the race has an added dimension of altitude running, with athletes w, approximately 1km in vertical climbing.

“We think that it’s actually probably more technical than the Tongariro Goat and that’s saying something because the Tongariro Goat is revered as one of the most technical tracks in New Zealand.

“But at the end of the day I think people will think they have had a hard day out. It’s not just a run in the park.”

Search for exo-planets and other life forms All things astronomical will be discussed next week as Tauranga Astronomical Society hosts one of New Zealand’s leading figures in astronomy.

Held at the observatory in Ferguson Park, Matua, next Tuesday, Doctor Grant Christie will give a presentation on exo-planets and whether there are life forms on these planets. Tauranga Astronomical Society president Toby Tobias says Grant is one of the foremost astronomers in the country and

is currently heading a research programme on exo-planets at the Auckland Stardome.

Grant is also Auckland Astronomical Society president and Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand vice president.

“He can also be heard on RadioLive at 12.15pm each Saturday morning discussing matters astronomical.”

Discussing boardwalks, Rena numbers and appointed directors misinformation and horror stories conjured up as some people imagine all sorts of things that aren’t going to be. The walkway, not yet fully decided in fine details, would ‘meander’ along Pilot Bay varying in width from 2-3 metres wide. The artist’s impression on public display shows ample room for picnic areas, plenty of grassed area and pretty much business (or more properly recreation) as usual.

Great enthusiasm

At the gathering there was a wide range of views from high emotion against to great enthusiasm in support of. People I spoke to were in favour about 75 per cent for the project. A ‘have your say’ indicator poll reflected this with about two thirds in favour. And of the one third recording dissatisfaction some were only commenting on specifics. For instance, too many pedestrian crossings along The Mall.

I floated the idea of removing the waka ama gear storage shed near the public toilets and replacing it with storage facilities along the front of the toilets. The waka ama representative was receptive to this idea as were others. The shed adds little to the Pilot Bay environment. Pilot Bay is big enough for all waterfront users with careful planning but it’s not standing up well to the sheer volume of people wanting to use the grass verge.

Something has to be done to make it usable on an on-going basis for large numbers of people and it is certainly no longer an “open space” as some seem to think it should be.

High expectations

Council appointed new directors for the new Council Controlled Organisation that will run ASB Baypark Stadium and the aquatics operations: Peter Farmer will be chairman, Shirley Baker (present chair of TCAL), Graeme Elvin (present chair of TCVL), Murray Gutry (from Perry Foundation), John Laughlin (past chair of Zespri) and Keith Tempest (past CEO of Trustpower).

There is some good horsepower here and expectations are high that these appointments will iron out problems from the past, minimise ratepayer exposure to risk, remove political influence from sound business practice and minimise and reduce ratepayer contribution – at least for operational subsidy.

Peter Farmer will be paid $55,000 as chair and the other directors $30,000 each – per year.

Michael Smith is appointed chair of the Holding Company. Michael is currently chair of Quayside, the company that holds the Regional Council shares in Port of Tauranga.

The holding company is comprised Michael, Mayor Stuart Crosby and deputy chief executive Christine Jones. Michael will receive $25,000 per year as chair.

Apparently a ‘protest’ meeting on Sunday promising 400 or more drew about 30 people, some of my colleagues reported. One thing is agreed by most and that is Pilot Bay’s grass verge can’t be left as it is at present.

A workshop on Central Government’s proposed reforms of Resource Management Act told elected members that the RMA will be altered significantly in short time. Whether it will be for the better remains to be seen. The Government officials doing the presentation were just doing their masters bidding and telling us how it will be. Some salient points were that courts would now have to have it proved that Council decisions were wrong, rather than reiterating the case and Maori perspective and input would be increased. There would have to be a one stop shop where all the region’s plans could be accessed at one time – rather than going from council to council as at present.

Hopefully this will ‘encourage’ plans to be similar.

At Full Council we had a 330 page agenda consisting principally of administrative matters. The boring bits to you out there in ratepayer land but which can have great impact if they affect you individually. More parking restrictions around the city – delegated authority to our new CEO Garry Poole (due to start April 15). Counting oil Cricket team seeks third national title

They protest my information that 300 tonnes of oil remain on Rena is incorrect, according to a message relayed to me via the Sun Live newsroom. They say there is “only” two tonnes left on board. Maritime NZ figures apparently show there were 1712 tonnes on Rena when she hit Astrolabe Reef. Of this 1300 tonnes were removed, 350 tonnes floated away – some onto our beaches – and that leaves 72 tonnes by my reckoning. You can see the point in keeping this in the public domain so that facts remain facts and don’t get clouded with opinion and confusion nor lost in the mists of time.

An unfortunate item in the Bay Times headlined “Secret payout to widow” featuring a photo of our past CEO, the late Ken Paterson.

In my view publishing this is grossly unfair. As Mayor Stuart Crosby is quoted as saying “The man is not here to defend himself ”. Whoever leaked this to the Bay Times is reprehensible and totally irresponsible – probably for some perceived self- aggrandisement and/or gain.

It is obvious the CEO position is a high pressure position and occupation. Mr Paterson’s death came as a real shock to elected members and it was equally surprising to learn after the event that he had undergone heart surgery before taking up his earlier job as Northland Regional Council chief executive. The “secret” payment was a “without prejudice” payment for some outstanding negotiated considerations – not a golden handshake – and was not a unanimous decision. The sum was not significant in terms of Council finances.

Tauranga Intermediate School’s cricket team has been crowned Primary School New Zealand Cricket Cup champions two years in a row – now it is seeking a third national title.

The team trains throughout the week, practising during lunchtimes and after school, with a main focus on bowling and fielding – two key aspects which helped the team stay defending champions, says Aubrey.

“We put a lot of emphasis on our fielding skills and our bowling skills. We do touch on our batting but the emphasis is more on our bowling and our fielding.”

Having already won against Bethlehem, Whakatane and St John Paul colleges, Aubrey says the team deserve another win.

“I’ve got a mixture of boys with good ability and good skills. We’ve got a bunch of energetic boys that I think love their cricket.”

The vice-captain scored 115 not out in the first game, which Aubrey says is quite an achievement.

The team will meet with Te Puke Intermediate on Monday March 27 in a final battle to determine if it will be crowned national champion for the third consecutive year.

The 14-strong squad started the season as defending champions after winning back-toback titles in 2011 and 2012 and defeating the competition in all three scheduled games already.

Coach Aubrey Jeftha says the team is the only one to win the cup two years in a row.

Aubrey says he is happy with the team’s preparation so far but adds they are always looking to improve.

“I think the boys started okay. There are a lot of things that we still need to work on but I think this year we started positively and I think we stand a good chance to go far in defending of this year too.”

Organic milk a first for farmers market

Amazing Amaranth While researching the benefits of a new micro green selection I am trying out, I discovered that amaranth contains higher amounts of goodies including proteins, calcium, iron, than many other grains.

The Myans might have been wrong with their calendar, but the Aztecs were probably right when they literally worshiped amaranth.

Many ceremonies and religious practices involved the grain, which was first domesticated 7000 years ago.

They say that good things come in small packages. The amazing amaranth is a tiny grain which can grow according to the Guinness Book of Records to an astonishing 27 feet.

It’s the only grain documented to contain vitamin c, and the bio-active lunasinlike peptides in amaranths protein are widely thought to have cancer preventing benefits, as well as blocking inflammation that accompanies several conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.

Trixie says it is a very unique opportunity for the market to have milk and associated dairy products available.

Amaranth Fritters

Makes 10 large or 20 party snack size Ingredients 1 C amaranth 2 C water ½ diced onion 4-5 tbsp olive oil 3 cloves garlic, fine chopped 1 tsp lemon zest 1 tbsp fennel seeds 1 tbsp coriander seeds 2 tbsp cumin seeds 1 tsp turmeric powder ½ tsp sea salt ½ tsp black pepper 2 eggs 2 C gluten-free panko breadcrumbs 1 C fine shredded Parmesan cheese ½ C flat leaf parsley

Method Bring two cups of water to the boil and gradually add the amaranth in a steady stream. Reduce the heat, cover and allow to simmer for 20-25 minutes. Meanwhile, in a small pan cook the seeds on a low heat until toasted then grind in a mortar and pestle.

Cook the diced onion and garlic in a little olive oil until fragrant and soft then add the lemon zest and the crushed seeds and turmeric. When nearly all the liquid has evaporated, stir in the spice mix and add one beaten egg. Season well with salt and pepper and allow to cool but not set completely.

Mix the chopped parsley and the Parmesan with the panko crumbs. Measure out small handfuls of the mix with dry hands and crumb each one into a pattie shape. Chill in the fridge until set then re-crumb using the other egg well beaten with a splash of water. Pan fry in olive oil until golden brown and crispy on the outside – about one minute – then turn and repeat. Drain on kitchen paper then serve at once with lemon wedges and some aioli. The texture of plain cooked amaranth is crunchy but also soft and this fritter has the same interesting textures, with a hint of curry spice without the heat, to enjoy knowing that it is good for you.

Before the winter sets in, here are a few tips for healthy additions to a meaty barbecue!

Vegetable kebabs: Line long bamboo skewers with colourful veggies and tofu.

Pre-roasted vegetables: Slice up pre-roasted pumpkin, kumera,

potato and beetroot and grill. Marinated tofu: Use on sticks or as steak-sized chunks – marinate with honey, ginger soy and sesame seeds.

Large portabello mushrooms with a drizzle of olive oil and herbs are delicious too.

Student wins chopper ride

When Papamoa Primary School student Kiwa Ross handed in his colouring competition entry at the TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter open day last week he didn’t think he would be flown to school as a result.

On Sunday March 17 the seven-year-old submitted his entry at the TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter Open Day with his mother Lisa Gardiner.

At first Lisa was dreading having to brave the wet weather and go along to the open day to submit her son’s entry. Lisa, now a TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter ‘friend,’ says she is glad they went.

“We didn’t think at all that he would win. I was actually thinking ‘oh my goodness, we’ve got to go and take it along to this open day’.

They drew the names out of a hat and he ended up winning.

“He just looked at me in shock. I said to him ‘Kiwa you’ve won.’ He couldn’t believe it.”

“We’re just absolutely rapt and really grateful. I think it’s a really cool prize.”

If not, we’ll look at the park down the road and, if all else fails, a flight over the city instead.”

Children get hands-on with water More than 200 children from across the Bay are learning about water issues as part of a two- day expo in Paengaroa.

Yesterday and today, children from 17 schools are working together at the hands-on expo, designed to raise awareness of water issues and teach children practical skills they can use in their communities.

The event coincides with World Water Day, and Sustainable Backyards month in the region.

Regional council environmental management general manager Eddie Grogan says they want to involve children in meaningful activities to help them to look after their own waterways.

“It also gives them an opportunity to meet the different water-related agencies so they know where to go to ask about water issues.

“Particularly in view of our

recent drought, it’s important that children understand how we manage water.” The various activities explored include water quality, allocation, stormwater, catchment protection, cultural health and native fish. The event is hosted by Bay of Plenty Regional Council, with support from the Enviroschools Foundation, Tauranga City Council, Rotorua District Council, Western Bay of Plenty District Council, Landcare and Department of Conservation.

Medal-winning birthday for proud father of three The results were good, but it was really all about the challenge, says Randy Piceno.

The St Mary’s School teacher is talking about his family’s success competing at the Mount Ocean Swim event last Saturday, where he and his three children all walked away medallists. “It was my birthday, so I convinced them to do it,” says Randy, who finished second in his age group.

“I wanted to do it as a birthday challenge.”

The swim followed on from a running race they competed in as a family last year, where the children each came first in their age groups and he was second.

“It’s nice to do these family challenges and we’ll continue to do them when they come along.”

“I was really happy with them all, especially my eldest Lucas, who was eighth out of about 120.”

TECHNOLOGY & GADGETS Technology increases business optimism A survey of more than 1000 New Zealand businesses found many small and medium sized companies feel more positive about their future if they embrace new technology.

The research, commissioned by The Warehouse and The Warehouse Stationary, shows the most popular items of technology are desktop computers, with 65 per cent usage, laptops, 57 per cent, desk phones, 57 per cent and smartphones, 46 per cent – while computers, tablets and smart-

phones are items people would most like to upgrade.

Businesspeople who use tablets regularly were more optimistic about their businesses growing than those who don’t – but the survey showed many Bay of Plenty businesses aren’t yet using such technology.

Northland businesses are the highest users of tablets, at 35 per cent, possibly because location and distance

require them to be mobile and connected. They’re followed by Auckland, at 29 per cent and Manawatu/Wanganui at 25 per cent. The Bay Of Plenty was the second lowest for tablet use at 15 per cent, just in front of Canterbury at 12 per cent.

Half the businesses surveyed say they felt their business would be held back in some way if they didn’t upgrade their technology in 2013.

Mount i-Site might go seasonal A Mount Maunganui i-Site may return from summer to summer, says Tourism BOP manager Rhys Arrowsmith.

In the council funded organisation’s six monthly report to Tauranga City Council this week Rhys says the Mount i-Site, which was closed last June, may be revived to cope with seasonal demand.

But any decision will depend on re-examining the whole relationship between tourism and information centres.

“What we have got to do is workshop all the ideas, put them all out on the table, talk them out and see what the best solutions are for providing information

services both in Tauranga and at the Mount,” says Rhys, after the meeting.

The way people are getting their information these days has changed a lot. While people might obtain information from the i-Site or visitor centre, they often now take the information home and make the booking on line.

The Mount i-Site closed because of declining foot traffic. There is an i-Site visitor information centre in Tauranga. Tourism BOP also operates an information centre on the port for cruise ship visitors.

The information centre at Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park is not part of the Tourism BOP operation.

Back to the future...

Sideline Sid thought he was going back to the 1980s when he was asked to review a Mitsubishi Mirage – however his mission turned out to be the all new Mirage from Bay City Mitsubishi in the centre of Tauranga city.

Cooper riding ahead in motocross Mount Maunganui’s Cody Cooper is leading the MX1 series after a cleansweep winning all three races at Pukekohe in round three.

Moto City Suzuki motocross team manager Andrew Hardisty says while everyone in the team believes Cody will win, neither he nor the team were getting ahead of themselves.

“He is the last guy in the world to get cocky, and is always the last one out there signing autographs.”

Andrew believes Cody’s riding has benefitted from a new level of professionalism and by surrounding himself with experts – including a nutritionist, fitness trainer and mental coach

– to ensure he is the best condition for races. Cody finished third in last year’s series – behind winner and fellow Mount rider Ben Townley and Motueka rider Josh Coppins.

While an injury ruled Ben out for New Zealand’s team at the Motocross of Nations competition in September, Cody rode in what he told Bay Driver was a disappointing experience after the team was penalised by a failed muffler test.

The final round is on March 31.

On top of avoiding caffeine, smoking, alcohol, pesticides, shellfish, microwaves and x-rays; expectant mothers need to be extra careful with driving, after a recent study revealed car crashes were a leading cause of foetal deaths.

The University of Otago study of foetal deaths caused by maternal injury between 1997 and 2008 shows vehicle crashes were responsible for more than half (21 of the 41 deaths). The rate of foetal death from such crashes is about double the rate of infant crash-related deaths in New Zealand. The university’s Injury Prevention Research Unit director Professor Hank Weiss is calling for more attention to be paid to reporting and preventing maternal injuries.

them. When I speak at events, I get comments along the lines of: “I’ll book in for a checkup and bring my husband/wife/partner with me”. However, the interested person usually turns up, minus their significant other.

To book in for a cardiac assessment, in fact any type of assessment that looks at you and how you function, requires you to be accepting that if something isn’t right, you’ll have to face it and do something to change it. If you’re not in a place where you want to make a change, face up to something about yourself or be critiqued, then you’re not going to even book in for such as assessment in the first place.

I get this situation in workplaces too. Staff are offered the opportunity to visit me for an assessment and those that take up the offer are usually those who need it least. The staff that really need the information for the betterment of their health are most often the ones I do not see. What is it that makes people tell themselves that they don’t want to, or don’t need to, know?

Possibly it’s because they already know there is an issue but they’re not yet ready to admit it or face it. Or it could be because they are fearful of finding something wrong when, at this point in time, they can say they

are in good health and therefore there is no need for change or self-improvement. Is it possible that some people simply do not want to know?

I reckon “I don’t want to know” is a weak argument and in fact a pretty selfish one on the whole. Our health has an impact on all the people around us. If we have little people in our life, the way we live our life influences the ideals that they create about living theirs. Our family members are most significantly impacted by our health position as it affects our mood, motivation and ability to participate in family live.

Our health also has an impact on our work colleagues and working relationships because if we are well we are usually productive; when we are unwell we are usually not. When we are sick, we all pay for our treatment through our taxes – if we all looked after ourselves better there would be a whole heap more public money to spend on other things.

Are you a horse that won’t drink the water? If you are, then your family and friends are probably nagging you to do something positive for yourself. The nagging is annoying, isn’t it? I have some advice to get them to stop nagging you…

For many women the problems caused by their monthly cycle have a significant impact on the quality of their lives, their relationships and general wellbeing.

The most common are the group of disorders classified as PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) and dysmenorrhoea (period pain). A Te Puna rugby player who admitted to knocking out Bay of Plenty Steamers’ player Simon Chisholm during a rugby game last year will complete community work as part of his sentence.

Uenuku Pieta, 22, was sentenced to 200 hours community service in Tauranga District Court on Tuesday and ordered to pay $500 reparation harm money to the victim.

Speed and alcohol factors in crash

Police believe speed and alcohol were factors in a crash which critically injured a 21-year-old Tauranga man.Emergency services were called to a crash involving a moving vehicle and a parked car on Birch Ave last weekend.

The driver was critically injured but is now reported to be in a stable condition.

Arrest in Bay rape case

A 48-year-old man has been arrested charged with the rape of a 22-year-old Bay of Plenty woman.

Police arrested the man after the incident was reported to staff in the Opotiki area last weekend.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen says the woman was allegedly attacked near the Coastguard building at the wharf off Grey Street at night.

The truth is, that the water quality on our beaches, in our harbour and estuaries and rives that discharge into it, is the worse that it has been for perhaps 50 years. And this situation will probably deteriorate further, before it improves.

The problems facing the clean-up of our catchment area are enormous and will take decades to rectify. Now is not the time for trumpeting about the benefits

Regional Council and road safety Councillor Nees in respect to road safety reports that there has been a lot of conversation and indeed resolutions confirming strategic and collaborative intent, further she reports that options are being investigated and reported on.

I was until recently a member on all three regional Road Safety Action committees for six years attending all meetings; I have yet to meet councillor Nees. Is this what is referred to a regional leadership? From where I sit Mr Horans article is on the money.

The Marriage Bill debacle It is with profound sadness that I have learned that the Same Sex Marriage Bill has been passed with significant majority.

Those MP’s how voted for it have demonstrated a callous disregard for the long held institution of marriage between men and women. I was not surprised at some of those MP’s, particularly where they were List ones. A number for whom I held a lot of respect have now gone way down in my estimation.

The passing of the Bill demonstrates a continuation of a lack of leadership in terms of society’s ideals, and the insidious degeneration in the standards of our society through trying to be all things to all people.

Sadly it is the young people who have to suffer the consequences of such failures.

Whilst I have to accept the decision for NZ, in the meantime, I believe that the Same Sex Marriage Bill will be repealed one day in a more enlightened era.

West misses out on fair share Five sixths of a six pack I am writing to explain a misquote attributed to me in a local publication re leadership in Katikati.

I have lived in Katikati all my life (Fifth generation) and love the place.

My role in all sorts of organisations has shown me what a terrific place it is for volunteers and community spirit and people contributing time and effort in their particular field of expertise.

I referred to the recent Te Puke example where a dynamic and skilled leader with good people behind him had pulled many diverse groups together, which has given them even greater strength and impetus than they had as individual groups, with amazing results.

The world economy, the huge PSA effect, and rate rises are impacting heavily on our people (including me) and we need to find innovative ways to increase our economic drivers and options, without touching

ratepayers pockets any further.

Our council contributes thousands of dollars to organisations to promote economic planning and growth.

I have often complained that well over one third of our council’s population, and an even greater percent of rates lay west of the Omokoroa turnoff, in Katikati and Waihi Beach, but in my opinion our area gets a very minimal benefit from this money and this has to change.

But if we could get a dynamic leader, such as Te Puke has got, with the appropriate skills and a small group of local people behind him and win back our fair share of the currently available funds, we could see real progress here.

The options for progress are too numerous to list here. Think on it!

Mayor Crosby is at it again and here are just a few gaffes to conjure up with before TCC Elections in October.

- He doesn’t seem to know the difference between a fully owned local community paper, employing staff and providing employment to Tauranga and the APN Australian publication that is no longer local and has recently cut staff. His predilection with the ‘City Partners’ scheme is probably the reason for this brainfade.

- Says that $1/2 million spent on consultants for staff reviews and CCO’s amalgamation is well spent and will save money, yet produces no tangible evidence to support this absurd claim.

Pilot Bay boardwalk turnaround is a fiasco and should have spoken to locals first before launching into a three metre track costing $1m cutting a swathe through the grassed foreshore area.

-Tsunami Alarms rethink spending a fortune on Meerkat assessments and now looks like he accepts Papamoa residents were right on Tactool Alarms at $200,000 versus $1.2m electronic option preferred by him.

-Supported payment of the $90,000 loan and $40,000 grant to the 2012 Jazz Festival breaking Council’s criteria, resulting in $130,000 loss to TCC ratepayers.

These are only some examples, the tip of the iceberg – you might say. Mayor Crosby’s success rate in the last 20 years zilch, zero, zippo – take your pick. His promises lemons would not cost TCC ratepayers has proved hollow and wrong each time. Is Mr Crosby someone you would vote for in October 2013? We only hear his views, what about Councillors, don’t they ever get to speak?

Mutual admiration society There has been plenty of flak recently on the very, very contentious City Partners issue. It’s about time someone got to the bottom of the TCC City Partners Scheme which should be renamed TCC Mutual Admiration Society. In theory it could possibly work but having regard to human nature it doesn’t – it’s a one-way conduit and that never really benefits TCC ratepayers at all.

The figures are ludicrous, most of the inflow coming via TECT Bay Trust Perry Foundation and other similar charitable outfits; Secrecy is rife; Suspicions aroused and public distrust evident; Shuts down criticism both ways, TCC/City Partners.

Current Council stratagem is to demand ridiculously high payments for information (even to media) and TCC thinks that will diffuse public criticism. Wrong, think again! TCC demand for $78 per hour to provide LGOIMA details is obstructive and heads should roll including the City Partners facilitator who cannot readily access financial details.

Strangely, nearly all Councillors it seems support the misconception of so-called ‘benefits’ accruing.

Teach, learn, grow, succeed Finally, it looks as if things are heating out there in the beautiful Bay. Consents are up, the builders are busy and subbies can’t find enough qualified help to hire. Already.

Sounds like typical 21st Century economics to me, all or nothing.

But jobs are the key to everything that you’d want from your home region.

Jobs means more jobs, which also means the downstream niceties such as sponsorships and philanthropy will benefit as well. There’s certainly no shortage of charities to support out there.

Matching the right people skills to the right jobs is another critical factor in succeeding in business, and today’s job market is no different here either.

This relates back directly to our educational success both as teachers and learners, who both have a responsibility to each other to teach, learn, grow & succeed.

Because such artists like to be paid in American dollars it means that promoters here, collecting dosh in Kiwi dollars, can more easily afford them.

71) Byron Bay Bluesfest!

So it’s in Australia but the Byron Bay Bluesfest is on again at Easter and – along with the previously mentioned Kiwi dollar – is the other reason so many great touring acts are currently visiting. It’s much easier to make the trip if you’re already going to Australia.

And the Byron Bay festival really is extraordinary. 73) Tuis is Tauranga! So Tauranga is the home of the Tuis, not the avian variety but the Tui Award for Best Jazz Album of the Year. For the past three years the National Jazz Festival has had the honour of presenting the Jazz Tui at a concert during the festival.

This year there’s an exceptional line-up of finalists includes Whirimako Black, for her album Late Night Plays, Nathan Haines for The Poet’s Embrace and new-comer Jennifer Zea for The Latin Soul. I imagine this will be one of the stand-out shows of the festival. All three Aaron Saxon. finalist will perform, supported by the Phil Broadhurst Quartet.

Expect world-class jazz. It’s on Sunday 31 March, 1pm, at Baycourt’s Jazz Café.

So the likelihood of gay marriage moves ever closer in New Zealand – and England and America Nathan Haines.

– and some unlikely bedfellows (excuse my choice of words) have been thrown together. Leaders of conservative parties here and the UK are for it. Even a senator who ran for the republican nomination at the last US election (Rob Portman) is for it.

In the opposite camp: two local MPs, Simon Bridges and Tony Ryall (is this the first time Mr Bridges has ever disagreed with John Key?), the new Pope and – kinda surprisingly – singer Michelle Shocked who stunned fans at a recent San Francisco concert by saying “When they... force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilisation, and Jesus will come back.” She wasn’t being ironic either.

Shocked is a born-again Christian, though her opinion to me seems muddled at best (isn’t Jesus coming back meant to be a good thing?).

GAME OF THRONES SERIES 2 Starring: Peter Dinklage, Charles Dance, Maisie Williams - Dir: various OKAY, so it’s not a film. But, with the imminent arrival of series 3 (kicking off on Sky’s Soho channel at the beginning of April, a mere 24 hours behind the US) anyone not yet in thrall of this magnificent fantasy epic should climb on board. Take the week off and work your way through series 2, now handily out on DVD. There have been a number of such outings on TV recently – Pillars of the Earth, Camelot,

et al – but this leaves the others in its muddy wake, mixing top class production values with a seriously complex story, vividly-drawn characters, grown-up dialogue, generous lashings of sex and violence, and twists and turns that continually surprise (less so I imagine if you’ve read the series of books by George R Martin).

After killing off the central character at the end of the first series it looked like things

Karl Urban continues to climb the stardom ladder – after support roles in The Chronicles of Riddick, LOTR, Doom and Star Trek – with the lead . It won’t help in Dredd much, though it’s a perfectly decent little film. The role is actually rather thankless, given he keeps his helmet on throughout and doesn’t have a lot to say. That’s just how Judge Dredd rolls. The film also has exactly the same plot as last year’s (superior) The Raid. Dredd and partner must battle their way up through a tower block to defeat an evil drug dealer on the top floor. Lots of fighting and some fun special effects. That’s about it really.

The Twilight franchise limps to a close with Breaking Dawn Part 2 , as bad a film as the series has yet produced. Earlier efforts could be criticized for the obvious passive women subtext, tedious romance, absurd plotting and simply being a bit boring.

This time it’s bad because it’s just plain bad, the sort of stuff that wouldn’t even cut it as a halfassed TV series. It actually just about works as a comedy, but that’s probably unintentional. Fans, however, should be happy: Kirsten Stewart pouts frequently, Taylor Lautner takes off his shirt, and R-Pat is reliably blank – at least Michael Sheen seems to be having fun.

might go downhill, but a renewed focus on the story’s smartest character, the diminutive Tyrion Lannister (Dinklage) brought even greater heights.

But no one character carries it: this is a huge ensemble piece and to try and attempt a plot summary would be hopeless. It’s like a medieval Mafia saga with the five families all at war. If you’re not already hooked you’re missing out – fantastic stuff!

You have to feel for Liam Neeson.

Here was a respectable, high class actor, a man with gravitas, and now he’s an over-sixty action hero, grunting inanities in films like The Grey and Taken while body doubles fight off bad guys (and wolves). Now, unsurprisingly, there’s Taken 2 . Turns out the several dozen Eastern European nasties he slaughtered while saving his daughter in part one are out for revenge. Next thing you know Liam and his ex-wife have been kidnapped by said forces of darkness and reluctantly must turn to the daughter for help. Violence ensues.

Like Neeson’s central turn, it’s solid, efficient, and tries to pretend it’s not just going through the motions.

is an unusual The Good Doctor film. It stars Orlando Bloom as a young doctor, clearly insecure and uncertain of himself, and lonely at being away from his family.

There seems to be something off about him.

And indeed there is, as we discover when his success in treating an 18-year-old patient becomes obsessional. What’s odd about the film is the way it’s shot, in a resolutely unflashy style that makes its low-key rhythms seem even more low-key. Bloom is actually very good at exhibiting subtle creepiness and there is naturalistic support from Rob Morrow, Michael Pena and Riley Keough.

The movies will be shown across six nights from April 30 – May 5 at ASB Baypark.

Headlining the festival will be a fully themed screening of Grease on opening night, while the remaining line-up will be announced shortly – including an opportunity for the public to vote on the film they would most like to see featured for the closing night.

Walking the Easter story It’s been in hiatus for two years, but when it last appeared more than 8000 people came from near and far to view it.

The long-awaited return of Bethlehem Baptist Church’s Easter Journey nears, as hundreds of volunteers work to put the multi-sensory, walk-through display depicting the Easter story together.

From March 28-April 1 the popular event is expected to attract some 10,000 people as the Easter story comes to life in the 45-minute walk-through – with men taking turns to portray Jesus on a real-life cross.

Running in the newly built auditorium, creative direction Yvonne Barnes says the walk-through will be bigger and more impacting than ever.

Back in 2000, a small group put together a display in the church – something simple

and personal to allow members to sit back and reflect on the story of Easter.

Throughout the years, the concept has grown little by little to become a muchloved, high impact display capturing the true meaning of Easter.

“The following year we decided we would build on it a little, using some props. A few years later, it got to the point where we started telling the story of Easter, and from hundreds of visitors it sort of blew out to a few thousand.”

Yvonne says the reality of seeing someone on a cross has been very impacting for audiences. “It’s something that really reinforces Christ’s sacrifice for us.”

As well as a surprise aspect to the event, Puppet Vision will be running scheduled shows for primary aged children.

“It’s a really fun presentation about the fourth wise man, with a small craft activity at the end.”

Rare, old and exotic items go on display More than 500 square metres of antiques are expected to grace Bethlehem Town Centre this weekend as the centre’s Antiques & Collectables Fair begins.

Beginning today, the fair hosted by Otumoetai Rotary, will run for three days. Entry costs $2 at the door and all proceeds will be donated to charity.

Centre manager David Hamilton says this is the first time this event has been held at Bethlehem Town Centre and hundreds of rare, old and exotic items are expected to be on display.

“We are hoping for a great turn-out and to give the community something unique.

“Otumoetai Rotary is working hard to

bring new life to this event and create something interesting with a community focus.”

The fair is one of a few community projects at the town centre this month, with the popular FASH event (fabric, abandoned stitchery and haberdashery) returning on Easter Sunday.

Traders will bring hoarded fabrics, unfinished projects and all manner of craft to sell. Again, entry is by gold coin donation and funds will go towards Te Puna Quarry Summer Trust.

“This has become an annual fixture at Bethlehem Town Centre and seems to have developed a following throughout the creative community,” says David.

The lead role of the daughter in-law is played with great hilarity, passion and aplomb by Tauranga drama teacher Susi Jansen. Susi is onstage for all but a couple of minutes of the play, and is obviously relishing the role as she deftly plays the rollercoaster rider of emotion.

“As outrageous as the story is, the audience has to believe that it is really happening to this poor woman. Susi is a real pro, she really brings this to life,” says Devon.

This is the premiere season of Devon’s new play, running from April 4-20. In May it will be released for production by other theatres. Bookings and information are available at Baycourt Ticketdirect.

Fun and furry education at open day Children worry immensely when their beloved pet has to stay behind at the vets and often give the vet a mistrusting look.

This weekend Mount Vets is offering children the chance to learn about what happens behind the scenes as part of the clinic’s Family Fun Open Day. From 11am-2pm on Sunday, children and adults alike can visit the popular clinic for a range of fun and educational activities, including face painting, a bouncy castle, surgery tours and dress-ups.

Practice manager Julia Stanton-Jones says “For children, their pets disappear out the back and they don’t really know what’s going on”.

“Our Open Day will be very educational, you can look under the microscope at parasites, ask questions and do a cool quiz, see where the animals hang out, and dress up as a surgeon with the gloves, coats and glasses on.

“For adults, it’s a chance to learn about the vet’s services, pick up some of the fantastic open day specials and liaise with staff about the best treatments for their pets.”

Having an open day also fits in with the wider ethos of the clinic, she says.

“We want to be part of the community. It’s interesting for people to come along and they can have a look around, ask questions and see the different services and options we offer and it gives us a chance

to show them that we go the extra mile to care for their pets.”

A big part of what Mount Vets is trying to achieve is education and helping people keep pets healthy so they can live long and happy lives.

“We don’t want to be just the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff when things go wrong.

“It is going to be a fantastic day and who knows, the Easter Bunny might even come and visit.”

Market day to support Omanawa hall Tucked away in the countryside is the Omanawa Community Hall.

To the average passer-by it may not look like much, but to those close by it’s a hub of activity providing a place for weddings, Christmas parties, family fun days, community bowling and more.

To help maintain and fund the hall, the Omanawa community is holding a market day at the hall this weekend – offering stalls, pony rides, and family fun from 12pm on Sunday.

Committee member Carol Gunn says the market day will hopefully be held three times a year to support the upkeep of the hall and offer city residents a chance to visit the country.

She says Omanawa Hall is the central point to the vibrant Omanawa and Lower Kaimai community and is situated about 15 minutes’ drive from Greerton.

Carol is bringing some of her own animals to entertain children at the market day.

The club is currently living out of containers at Waimarino Kayak Tours Adventure Park and cannot grow until it has its own space.

It approached Tauranga City Council in January looking for help finding a site beside the river for a 250 square metre clubrooms with flat water access, where it can store canoes; house showers, toilets and changing rooms; and have car parking.

The club’s approach to council coincided with Canoe Racing New Zealand and High Performance Sport New Zealand including the Wairoa River on the short list of locations for the development of a canoe racing High Performance Centre.

The outcome of that process is pending. If the Wairoa is selected then the canoe club’s required building size is expected to double, but the cost will be paid for by the government.

Club member Terry Newlands told councillors the NZ Olympic Canoe squad has visited and trained on the river for four days since the January meeting. The CEO and board members of Canoe New Zealand have also looked at it.

“It’s still in the mix as far as we know,” says Terry.

The canoe club focusses on flat water sprinting as opposed to slalom kayaking. The club formed in 2006 and was on the river with no base for six months before renting storage from Eastern Bay Rowing Club on the west bank. As the rowing club grew, the canoe club was squeezed out. It moved to Memorial Park and paddled on Tauranga Harbour before returning to the Wairoa in 2009, where it is still leasing containers at Waimarino for storage.

Waimarino is also growing and this time when the canoe club moves it wants to be into its own space.

Council planners have tacked the canoe club proposal onto Parau Farms where, with the neighbouring Bethlehem College, there is a possibility of growing a watersports hub.

The city council approved the recommendation, and also resolved to engage with Bethlehem College to look at road access down by the riverside where the council land adjoins the college.

Construction of the Parau Farms playing fields is expected to begin 2015/16.

Seek something special now

Many years ago, I heard the story of some Englishmen who rescued stranded men off the coastline of France in the Second World War. These men had been fighting in the armed services, and had been driven back to the coastline where they were stranded. So near, yet so far from home. A call went out to rescue these men. Most of the journeys were made at night in perilous conditions.

Many people who had a boat and knew the sea went, praying “Oh God let us get these men back home”, and somehow miraculously they did.

Over 2000 years ago we had a direct representation of God on the earth.

It’s a historical fact just like the story of the men who were rescued in the armed forces. There is a record of time being described, BC - AD, and somehow miraculously men and women all over the globe ‘believed’ in The Lord Jesus Christ.

One thing most of us accept was His model prayer: Our Father who art in Heaven. His opening words alluding to a relationship that we are familiar with, that of a family connection.

Encouragement to pray, not only to God, but to a Heavenly Father.

This Easter we celebrate a “Risen Saviour”. What

does that mean? Well, in a nutshell, it means that the same Lord Jesus Christ who walked this earth over 2000 years ago, suffered, died and rose again from the dead, so that we could be rescued from facing never, ever being able to go home again. He gave His life to be the boat that rescued us, to be the pathway through the unknown, back to

The Father we came from. And one day we will all have to make that journey.
