Here at RR we couldn’t help seeing the irony of the greatest critics of current asset sale plans being the same people clipping the ticket during the last round.

In the same week that a long-lost script for a sequel to the ET movie surfaced, and Airplane! was voted the funniest comedy ever, we’ve seen an interesting sequel unfold in the real world.

That sequel is about to play out here in NZ politics, and some people with selective memories don’t recall the original. And arguably, a comedy. But that’s not important right now.

“Asset Sales Part Two” is not really an original plot

Hot mandates

by the National Party. There were pilot episodes, although hastily produced, by previous administrations.

Minister for State Owned Enterprises, Tony Ryall, points out that asset sales are not a new storyline for this country.

“Remember when Labour sold New Zealand Steel to Equiticorp for $327 million?” asks the Minister. “This 1988 sale was pushed through Parliament under urgency.”

“Remember when Labour sold Petrocorp to Rossport Investments in 1988 for $801 million? Again, rushed through under urgency.

Remember when Labour sold Post Office Bank to ANZ Banking Group in 1989 for $665 million? – again approved under urgency – and no select committee hearings.

Remember when Labour sold off Air New Zealand under urgency for $660 million to Brierley’s (65 per cent), and

overseas airline companies Qantas (19.9 per cent), American Airlines (7.5 per cent) and Japan Airlines (7.5 per cent)?

Remember when – also in 1989 – Labour sold off Shipping Corp to ACT (NZ) Ltd? This $33.5 million sale was again pushed through under urgency – with no select committee process.

And remember – again in1989 – Labour sold Rural Banking Finance to Magneton Holdings for over half a billion dollars?

In just three years, Labour sold over 15 state assets for almost $10 billion to the highest bidders.

Who voted for these asset sales without telling the public about their plans at the previous election?

Here at RR headquarters, we’re a bit perplexed about Labour banging on that National doesn’t have a mandate. It was made pretty clear before the election that Nats were planning a garage sale – and only 49 per cent at that.

Seemed like a pretty clear mandate to me.

The last time Labour had a mandate was when Chris Carter took his boyfriend overseas. And we all paid for that man date. Then there was a succession (careful to read that as one word) of Labour man dates that left us wondering: perhaps if the Labour men had been putting as much thrust into their political duties instead of racking up huge costs of dirty weekends at taxpayer expense, we might have had a better result for the country.

Call for road safety improvements

A project to improve the State Highway 2 and Barretts Road intersection in Whakamarama is in the pipeline, however the project is not deemed high priority as there has been no severe injury or fatal crashes on the stretch of road in the last five years.

Whakamarama Community Inc has been trying for the last five years to get the road improved and has been told the project is not a high priority.

The organisation has written to both NZTA and

Western Bay of Plenty District Council in a bid to have the stretch of highway improved.

Bay of Plenty state highways manager Brett Gliddon says NZTA is aware and acknowledges the concerns raised by the local community.

NZTA has recommended the project be included in the Bay of Plenty regional safety improvement programme.

“However, this project is ranked against all national safety improvement projects and there is limited funding available.

“Sites of high severity crashes are more likely to have priority.”

Ken’s work carries on Tauranga City Council chief executive Ken Paterson died on Sunday, aged 61.

Tauranga City Council is waiting for two weeks before putting wheels in motion to replace the city council chief executive officer Ken Paterson, who died Sunday night.

Ken, aged 61, died in his sleep.

He is survived by his wife Melanie and their children Finley, aged three, and seven month old twins Mackenzie and Elliott.

“What we will do is wait for at least a fortnight, purely out of respect for Ken and his family, before we consider our options,” says mayor Stuart Crosby.

“In the meantime Christine Jones, who is deputy chief executive officer, will be acting CEO.

That was put in place by Ken some time ago.”

A private family service and cremation will be held on Saturday.

“This is a very difficult time and the family appreciates being given the time and space to mourn the devastating loss of Ken,” says Ken’s brother-in-law Malcolm Johns.

Ken came to Tauranga from the Northern Regional Council a year ago. He was hired with a view to restructuring Tauranga City Council.

He undertook similar tasks in Northland, which were acknowledged in the comments from Northland this week on the news of Ken’s death.

“Ken had made a significant difference in efficiencies on the council,” says Northern Regional Council chairman Craig Brown.

“He was a real goer and worked from daylight to dusk. He was a tough man and he didn’t suffer fools gladly.”

Ken refocused the Northern Regional Council away from a somewhat ‘silo mentality’ between its structures to a more inclusive approach throughout, achieving dialogue across the whole organisation, says former Northland Regional Council chairman Mark Farnsworth.

The restructuring process at Tauranga City Council was to begin in earnest on July 1, says Stuart.

“The elected members are still focussed on resetting this organisation for the future. It’s currently set for the past. We are committed to carry on that work.”

Three Tauranga indoor bowls players have put a new cup in the trophy cabinet this week.

Grant l’Ami and Mike and Lorraine Phipps from the South City Club in Tauranga won the triples competition at the 63rd Lion Foundation National Indoor Bowls Championships at the Southland Indoor Bowls Centre Hall, Invercargill last week.

Lorraine and Mike are current North Island representatives who met while competing when Lorraine was a Waikato representative and Mike was a Taranaki representative.

Since relocating to Tauranga 18 months ago from New Plymouth they have continued to compete wearing the Tauranga colours.

Mike, who has been playing competitively since 1984, took up

bowls after an injury from contact sports left his leg permanently damaged.

“I’ve always been fairly competitive. My father and brother played and I found it pretty easy to be honest,” says Mike.

This is Grant’s seventh title, Mike’s sixth and Lorraine’s second.

They are all members of last year’s champion four when Mike won his gold star.

He has the fours 1998, 2002, 2011, triples 1999 and pairs 2002.

Grant won the fours in 1994, 1998, 2002, 2011, the triples in 1999 and the pairs in 2002.

In the final over ten ends they defeated champions Gary, Graham and Jan Low, from the Grasmere

Club, Southland 6-4 in a tense and exciting match.

The score was 4-3 to Grant after six ends which included a drawn end which shows how tight the heads were.

Gary Low scored one shot on the seventh end to level the scores. The eighth end was drawn.

On the ninth end, Gary held four shots when Grant drew the jack with his last bowl to lead 5-4. On the final end Gary held the shot after his first bowl.

Grant again retrieved the situation drawing the jack for the win.

Gary attempted to run the shot bowl out but it did not move the Tauranga team winning a great final 6-4.

Wake up Tauranga! Get involved in helping save our environment before it is too late. This is the cry from Gray Southon and his friends.

Gray, the United Nations Association Tauranga branch president, is encouraging Tauranga residents to make the most of the chance to save the environment by getting involved in the Rio+20 environmental summit taking place in Rio de Janiero.

Together with other members of the branch he staged a protest in the street this week to draw attention to the issue.

Gray says because the environmental challenges are so big, many people do not believe they can make a difference themselves, so give up before trying.

“There needs to be much greater involvement. It’s an enormous opportunity for New Zealand to get involved. There is an enormous amount happening

but by not getting involved we are getting isolated.

“While the task of ensuring a sustainable future is of concern to many people and organisations, New Zealand is missing a crucial opportunity to engage with international developments and to seize commercial opportunities.”

While the issue and conference might seem half a world away, Gray says a lack of action and involvement in addressing these issues will affect the Western Bay directly if people decide against using the Port of Tauranga or buying our avocados or kiwifruit.

Gray encouraged people to follow the summit online and lobby the Government to get involved.

On track for world juniors

From the beach to the track, Papamoa athlete Kodi Harman this weekend aims to take another step towards his goal of competing at the Olympic Games.

Kodi, 18, first came to prominence in the surf lifesaving circuit, before his speed as a beach sprinter prompted him to also take to the track two years ago as a training partner for fellow Papamoa sprinter Joseph Millar.

“I had always been keen to get a coach and really push my sprinting, so I was really keen.”

At the time Joseph was training for the IAAF’s World Junior

Championships, the competition Kodi himself is building up to in Barcelona from July 10.

Kodi wants to set a new personal best at the event, to take another big step towards his goal of running at the Olympics in Rio in 2016.

This week he flew out for four weeks of competition and training in Europe. It is his second major international event – after competing at the Youth Commonwealth Games on the Isle of Man last September. The high standard of competition at the event saw him slash his 100m time from 11.11 to 10.67. Both his 100m and 200m speeds were shaved back again at the national secondary school championships in December, where he took out both titles.

This weekend Kodi and the 15-member New Zealand junior squad will be competing at an event in Mannheim, Germany, before going on to a training camp in France. But it is the junior event, being held only weeks ahead of the Olympics, that he is really focused on.

“I’m sure there will be a lot of excitement and many of the world’s best. I’m hoping it will bring out the best in me with a new PB (personal best).”

Kodi, who won four golds at this year’s national surf lifesavings championships, has no intention of choosing between sand and track – saying he had been favouring sand but since improving on the track enjoyed both equally.

“We’ve always wanted to get signed and get a big recording deal with a major American label.

I know most young bands start off like that but we really want to make it happen and are going to work really hard to do it.”

Six Gun Quota and regional winner Sunday Best, from St Peter’s School in Cambridge, have a month to complete a 15-minute video of themselves performing to compete for eight places at the national finals. The finalists will be chosen from the top two bands at the 24 regional finals.

They will hold a concert in the school hall during the school holidays, which they will video and use as a fundraiser towards

other costs – including releasing its first album ‘Minimum Wage’ in mid-July.

Rockquest founder Glenn Common says the bands will have to work hard and draw on their creativity to make the most of the opportunity the completion offers.

A little exploration gave me a new viewpoint of Maketu Estuary. A very calm evening and the recent full moon provided a nice photo opportunity. I put my D3 on the tripod with a 70-200 mm F2.8 lens. A shutter opening of 47 seconds was achieved by using a small aperture of F18 and a cable release. This gave the moving clouds a nice smooth appearance while everything else in the photo was sharp.

Paraplegic woman asked to leave her home A spat, involving allegations of the manufacture of methamphetamine, has broken out between Housing New Zealand and a paraplegic Mount Maunganui woman.

Karla Webster lost the use of her legs in a car accident, in which her friend died, in 1998.

Since, she has spent time in Otara Spinal Unit, Althorpe Private Hospital, with her brother, then at her Patterson Street flat for four years, which was extensively renovated to suit her needs.

She loves the place.

“The house that I’m in, they re-gutted the kitchen for me and put in a kitchen bench on hydraulics that goes up and down and they put in a wall oven and converted the bathroom and toilet for me and put in ramps – they’ve done a good $20,000 worth of work to the house,” she says.

She received a letter in early-April from Housing New Zealand advising her she had three months to vacate her flat.

A Tenancy Tribunal ruling a week ago went against her, and now she must leave the premises by July 10.

“I’m pretty gutted – it’s perfect for me. They haven’t even relocated me – I can apply for another house.

“I lost because like every other landlord apparently, they’ve got every right to give me a 90 day notice – they don’t have to give me a reason if they want the house back.”

Karla doesn’t know what purpose the house will serve once she leaves, and due to a number of complicating factors – including her specially trained dog, her wheelchair and the fact she needs a five year lease on any new flat before ACC will consider modifying it – will be forced to move into a basement apartment.

Tenancy service general manager Kay Read says Housing New Zealand doesn’t tolerate

Fire brigades on the hunt for more volunteers Greerton and Mount Maunganui Volunteer Fire Brigades are searching for more recruits to help with the 200 callouts they deal with every year.

Greerton Volunteer Fire Brigade has 15 firefighters and Mount Maunganui has 13, but both brigades want more, especially for incidents during business hours.

Qualified firefighter Hayley Fletcher says the 200 calls a year they deal with could be anything from false alarms, house fires, scrub fires, weather related incidents, flooding, and assisting the public.

“We train on Tuesday nights 7pm ‘til 9pm and this time is compulsory to retain and improve on our skills and build on teamwork within the brigade.”

She says recruits must pass a medical screening and security check, at

no cost to the recruit, before they take on the job.

“After training with the brigade every week, completing pre-course learning, completing a first aid course, recruits get sent on a seven day course based at the National Training Centre in Rotorua.

“The costs associated with this are met by the fire service.”

She says this covers the cost of uniforms, travel expenses, accommodation and loss of wages.

“The work and training can be a challenge but definitely not impossible. We have a big focus on teamwork. It’s a very rewarding experience.

“There are heaps of opportunities to advance within the brigade for the right people, with job descriptions including driver/pump operator, senior firefighter and officer.”

Hayley says firefighters are often

expected to work at heights, as well as pushing and pulling heavy loads.

“So a good level of fitness is required and also good vision, hearing and balance to cope with extreme conditions.

“If you live or work within a five minute drive of either station, please contact us and we can provide further information about visiting us at the station to meet some of our members and discover if this is the challenge for you.”

We are looking for people with the life skills, who are dedicated, can commit, are not too scared to push themselves, enjoy helping others, are team players and are community minded.

“In this case, the tenant breached her tenancy agreement by using her property for possession and supply of cannabis.”

“Tests carried out by the New Zealand Drug Detection Agency also confirmed a positive result for methamphetamine, at levels indicating the property had been used to manufacture the drug.

“As with any chemically contaminated property, it is not safe for the tenant to remain at the property. Ms Webster has been advised of this both verbally and in writing, but has chosen to remain at the property.”

“We have offered to refer Ms Webster to agencies that can help her find new accommodation, but she has declined.”

Karla says she was convicted on a techniclaity, and that the cannabis found in the flat was for personal supply.

She also denies any knowledge of

methamphetamine production and did not know the tests had even taken place.

There was no mention of methamphetamine production in the Tenancy Tribunal hearing, she says.

Kay says forensic and industrial science specialists will determine whether the property needs to be decontaminated once Karla has left.

Depending on the level of contamination, this can range from industrial cleaning through to having the property demolished.

Between 2006-2011, 26 Housing New Zealand properties, out of a total of 69,000, tested positive for methamphetamine.

In 2009, the corporation won a test case seeking more than $180,000 in damages from tenants who manufactured methamphetamine in a Napier state house. The house was demolished in 2004.

Patchy and uncomfortably cold Despite having over the last ten days some of the best possible conditions, WBOP fishing was mostly patchy at best, and many times uncomfortably cold.

Russ Hawkins (Fat Boy), mid-week last week at the Mayor Knolls landed four average sized bluenose, and five gemfish, plus some tarakihi and snapper at the Ten Mile.

Saturday fishing was very slow, but the three Hawke’s Bay anglers aboard were happy with their better than home 15 tarakihi catch. Sunday again at the Mayor Knolls there was no fish until they struck the BOP recently rare hapuku and landed three – the heaviest around 15kg.

Brett Keller (Manutere) last Thursday was fishing around Motiti Island and picking up a satisfactory amount of tarakihi. Saturday in the same area the tarakihi fishing remained ‘pretty good’.

Garth Le Lievre (Deepstar) mid-week towards Mayor found a fairly plentiful supply of gemfish, tarakihi, and a few snapper. Sunday near Motiti, the

fishing although not good was good enough. All the anglers aboard got fish and one got his limit. The catches were largely tarakihi but with some snapper.

It was not a good week for our regular Papamoa kontiki fisher; his best take being three snapper in one set. Others however did better – one early morning got his snapper limit in one set.

There were some good catches with snapper up to 5kg. At Pukehina one kontki fisher brought in 13 snapper and a john dory in two sets.

Kayak fishers off Papamoa Beach have found it hard going with two to four snapper, kahawai or tarakihi being typical for often many hours fishing.

Tauranga Fish & Dive Club McFarlane Trophy, Heaviest Kahawai Harbour Only Contest, held Sunday. Russell Anderson who caught only one fish won the trophy with his 1.87kg kahawai catch. Other prizes: Average Weight, Jaimie Borrell, 1.31kg; Heaviest Junior Catch, Te Rina Marsh, 1.34kg.

Fourteen fish were weighed in.

Community benefits from plant recycling Bay of Plenty Regional Council has a Community Relations Strategy which aims to position council as an agile, can-do organisation which works collaboratively with its community.

One way council does

this is by working with community groups to help them undertake environmental restoration projects.

Recently, community collaboration delivered a real win-win, benefiting landowners and the environment at little cost.

Fish hooks likely in Regional Policy Statement The Bay of Plenty Regional Council is soon to release its second generation Regional Policy Statement (RPS), after a long process of development, submissions from ratepayers, and review.

The cost of this process is

in the millions (especially once it gets appealed to the Environment Court – my recollection is that the Waikato RPS has cost more than $8m), so you would hope that the final document is robust and adds value.

We’ve cut the company tax rate to 28 per cent, implemented across-the-board personal tax cuts, and reduced ACC levies for farmers. We’ve also been making changes to the Resource Management Act to make it easier to do business.

To ensure we have the most efficient dairy industry in New Zealand, we are introducing changes to the Dairy Industry Restructuring Act. Our bill enables Fonterra to set up the Trading Among Farmers (TAF) scheme, and creates transparency around the setting of farm gate milk prices. This will promote a competitive and innovative dairy industry.

This bill is crucial to ensure the continuing growth of an efficient and innovative New Zealand dairy sector.

National and rural New Zealand share a proud history. We will continue to support and invest in our rural sector, to grow our economy and create jobs.

Celebrate the treaty settlements I recently attended a UN workshop in Geneva addressing post-war recovery issues. Sitting at that table among the 20 international experts were four Kiwis, two of them Maori.

We were all there as independent international experts, and not because of indigenous origins. It was a stunning commentary on the impact of Kiwis on the global stage.

Congratulations to Ngati Ranginui for negotiating a treaty settlement that

addresses issues arising from historical events at Gate Pa and elsewhere.

That settlement, signed ThursBy Ian McLean, day this week, spokesperson for the Green Party acknowledges mana, recognises origins, and perhaps most importantly in terms of the future, delivers economic opportunity.

It was great to go to a large fundraising dinner at the Tauranga Racecourse where about $70,000 was raised for Kidney Kids and the Bethlehem Foundation and its educational purposes. I also enjoyed speaking at the launch of the Sky Hawk fighter jet at Classic Flyers Museum. As I said on the day, I was glad to have played a role in getting it here and its journey to Tauranga is a testament to the persistence shown by the team at Classic Flyers. In my view this museum has become one of the top attractions in our city, both for locals and for tourists.

Of special significance was the signing on Thursday of Ngati Ranganui’s Deed of Settlement of Historical Treaty of Waitangi claims. Ngati Ranginui, along with other Tauranga iwi, suffered some of the worst grievances in New Zealand’s history, so it was good to be part of a day that mended that and allows for a positive future. I am optimistic about the opportunities for economic development in our area that will arise from the Crown’s financial redress to Ngati Ranginui.

Crown apologises, pays millions From front cover

the imposition of land tenure reforms, the failure to ensure that Ngati Ranginui were left with sufficient land for their needs, and the compulsory purchasing of Ngati Ranginui land interests, which were deemed to be uneconomic.

Close to a thousand people gathered at the historic battle ground of Te Ranga in Pyes Pa yesterday to mark the settlement of Treaty of Waitangi grievances between Tauranga iwi Ngati Ranginui and the Crown.

The signing of the Statement of Position and Intent by the Minister of Maori Affairs Pita Sharples, the Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Chris Finlayson and representatives of Ngati Ranginui took place 148 years to the day since the battle of Te Ranga.

Ngati Ranginui is the first Tauranga iwi to settle with the crown and the pan hapu settlement, in which Ngati Ranginui’s eight hapu have come together to settle as one, is a first in New Zealand history.

The settlement includes $38 million in financial compensation as well as a large amount of land in the Western Bay of Plenty.

The day began with a karakia and powhiri welcoming dignitaries including Tauranga MP Simon Bridges, Wairiki MP Te Ururoa Flavell, council representatives and iwi representatives from Ngati Te Rangi and Ngati Pukenga.

Dignitaries were welcomed onto the site with a stirring and emotive haka performed by more than 100 representatives.

The signing of the Deed of Settlement of historical claims took place at about 11.30am.

Tauranga MP Simon Bridges says there “was a really good feeling on the day”.

The Crown and Te Roopu Whakamana o Nga Hapu o Ngati Ranginui (Ngati Ranginui) initialled a Deed y of Settlement on April 6, 2012. It remains subject to ratification and the passage of legislation.

In August 2007, the Crown recognised the mandate of Ngati Ranginui and negotiations on the settlement package began with the

signing of Terms of Negotiation in September 2008.

In the settlement, the Crown apologises to Ngati Ranginui for its actions and omissions, which have breached the Crown’s obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi.

The breaches include the Crown’s ultimate responsibility for the war in Tauranga, the confiscation of Ngati Ranginui land, the failure to actively protect Ngati Ranginui interest in lands at Tauranga - which they y wished to retain - the unreasonable and unnecessary use of force by the Crown during campaigns, the failure to protect Ngati Ranginui tribal structures following

Helping from the heart Volunteers are not paid for the work they do, but any of those recognised in Volunteer Western Bay of Plenty’s annual awards this week will tell you about the ample rewards they earn.

The awards, given out at a ceremony at Tauranga Historic Village on Monday, saw five volunteers receiving major awards while 16 were commended for their efforts. Volunteer of the Year award winner was Luci Carter, for her work with the Royal New Zealand

Foundation for the Blind, while Rob Miller was named runner-up for his work for the Waipuna Hospice. Ivan Sullivan, who volunteers on the IHC one-to-one friendship programme, was highly commended.

Luci described the award as unexpected and unnecessary. “You don’t volunteer for awards or for anything else.

It’s just about helping out where you can.”

Youth Volunteer of the Year was won by Rafael Ortiz, who has helped at the YMCA’s programmes for the past two years – including as a mentor to children in afterschool care and as a volunteer helping on the school holiday programme. Youth award runner-up went to full-time student Lauren van Arendock, who gives her time at Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore to help make a difference for those who need it. Toni-Marie Wickham was commended for her help at Waipuna Hospice.

Other volunteers commended at the awards were Maureen Keen (Cancer Society); Rae Jamieson (Age Concern); Matthew Baxter (Canteen); John Graham (YMCA); Rachel Hohneck (Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore; Jo Edlin (Tauranga Budget Advisory Service); Elizabeth Murphy (Girl Guides); Sandy Coley (Plunket).

This Volunteer Awareness Week, June 17-23, the Waikato/ Bay of Plenty Cancer Society is saying thank you to its team of hundreds of volunteers.

The work of the Cancer Society would not be possible without the efforts of hard working volunteers across the region, says Waikato/BOP Cancer Society chief executive Judy Gould.

“The Cancer Society receives no direct government funding so we are reliant on the efforts of volunteers to provide our many support services in the community.” Volunteers are involved with the Cancer Society on so many levels. Volunteer drivers provide transport to and from treatment and appointments, volunteers help out at the oncology receptions, volunteer support groups in rural communities support those in their local community affected by cancer, and many help out with fundraising activities such as Daffodil Day and Relay For Life.

“Whether it is as little as once a year or as often as people are able – it all makes a huge difference,” says Judy. “Volunteer Week is a wonderful way to say ‘thank you’ to all the people who volunteer their time helping others in the community. It also provides an opportunity to encourage others to get involved as volunteers.”

Walking a winding line for forgotten fathers Some men walk out on their families. Colin Carey is walking to Wellington for his.

Colin Carey feels so frustrated by the family court system that he is walking 35km from Katikati to Tauranga to raise awareness of the problems fathers and grandparents have gaining access to their children and grandchildren.

This is a trial walk as he plans to walk to Wellington in September to present his argument for Family Court reforms.

Colin, who has two daughters from his first marriage and three sons from his second, has not seen his sons since October last year.

“I’m heart broken. I obviously have a very sad, angry ex-wife.”

The split widened in March when Colin was found guilty of assault on a child minor, after he allegedly picked up, and shook, his seven-year-old son.

“Immediately I put in for an appeal and I got the paperwork yesterday.”

The assault conviction, which Colin denies, joins a list of other minor charges since he was 14-years-old, including theft and drunk driving.

Colin says too many of the country’s children are missing out on their parents, who are dragged to their knees financially under the current system.

“Let us put the food in the children’s mouths instead of into the family court system coffers,” says Colin.

“By simply changing the current system our kids will grow prouder and stronger.”

Colin believes that no divorce be finalised until the matrimonial property is settled. He says the WINZ benefit currently known as the DPB should be abolished and replaced with a non-benefit system based on existing welfare criteria.

“Parents seeking separations that involve children should have limited, but fair, options. Who gets custody of the kids should be a simple choice of week about or alternate months. If this one

choice cannot be agreed on then an arbitration system chooses which is more practical for the mum, dad and children.

“If either party moves away from the area that the children’s school is in, that is their problem. They shouldn’t be allowed to drag a child out of the school because that is their sanctuary.

“The main exception is when there are prior convictions for family violence within the union,” says Colin.

The books were delivered to every home and business in the country during the second weekend of June, but the size of the font will mean they are useless to many.

Representatives of Tauranga rest homes, Bethlehem Views and Oakland Lifecare, say the font is too small for their residents to see.

The homes either have someone to assist residents to read the books or do not bother to hand them out.

Yellow Pages representative Maja Lee says the font size decrease is one of a number of changes made to the directory this year in an effort to make the books more user-friendly.

The changes have made the book 10 per cent smaller.

I’ll come when you call Being just a pup makes me a product of the Y generation.

Not the whine generation, but the “why can’t I?” lot.

Except it’s more a case of “why can’t I chew that?” in my family.

And of course my generation is very

techno savvy, which is why I have my own Facebook page, electronic home detention collar, and as soon as Apple invent one, I will have an iBone. It will have a lot of handy apps, includ-

ing linking automatically with the water bowl and, hopefully, will bury itself.

And because of my aptitude for gizmos, I’ve been helping the boss adjust to his newly upgraded cellphone.

He’s not a very progressive thinker, and complains bitterly every time he’s forced to change with the times. If he had his way, there wouldn’t be any cellphones; we’d be stopping the Hillman at phone boxes to put four cents in the slot to make a ‘mobile’ call.

He’d not have an iPod either, but probably a wind up gramophone tied to the handlebars of his bicycle with bailing twine.

So he’s been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century of communications.

I helped him decide on ring tones

for his new phone. The quacking duck really got me going, so he decided to set that up. He made himself a bit unpopular with the woman of the house, by setting her incoming calls to a dog barking. I like it though because it sets off a chain reaction, with me first, then Ady if she’s listening and then we relay the alert to the boss around the section.

It’s a bit like semaphore but without the girl scouts with flags, and a lot noisier.

Still, you can’t beat an old fashioned stick for dog fun. Despite all the fancy gadgets, there’s nothing better than a chunk of wood

thrown into the harbour, pursued hotly by an enthusiastic pooch.

I must text the boss and tell him it’s time to get throwing.

Water heating grants ending

Home-owners only have four months to install energy efficient water heating systems if they want a government grant towards the cost.

The deadline was announced in the recent Budget, with money reprioritised to go to insulation grants for 41,000 homes under the Heat Smart programme.

Grants of $500 or $1000 are only available for homeowners who have solar or heat pump water heating systems installed by the end of October.

To be eligible for grants, systems needed to be bought by June 14, 2012.

Energy and Resources Minister Phil Heatley

says because most New Zealand electricity was generated from renewable resources it was not so important for the Government to financially support renewable power at the household level.

“This is especially relevant now when we need to prioritise Government spending.”

The Budget includes more investment in business energy efficiency, with the aim of cutting greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs.

Instead of providing grants the government is encouraging homeowners to select efficient water heating through extensive information at www.energywise.govt.nz An Energywise spokeswoman says the focus is on providing good information for consumers to help them make energy efficient choices.

Sustainable home heating One of the simplest steps in making your home more sustainable is choosing the right heating system.

The energy efficiency of your home’s heating system will have a major impact on your power bills, with www. consumerpowerswitch.org. nz stating heating accounts for 29 per cent of the average household’s power usage.

Heat pumps lead the pack for energy efficiency, producing 250300 per cent of heat energy for the power they use – well above other forms of heating.

Heating specialist Shane Snowden, who has been installing heat pumps for more than 20 years, says pumps are the most efficient and economical way of heating your home.

Research by Consumer New Zealand shows heat pumps are one of the cheapest heating options to run, but to get the best results need to be selected for your house’s capacity. In contrast, it rates portable heaters as the most expensive form of heating to run.

But if you look beyond electricity efficiency to the sustainability of the fuel source the issue becomes more complex. A report

rates log and wood pellet burners as the most sustainable from the perspective of emissions and fuel renewability because 30 per cent of New Zealand’s electricity comes from fossils (2008).

Home-owners who want to cut their carbon footprint without changing their heating system can take many small steps to reduce their power usage. Sustainability information website www.econation.co.nz recommends making the most of passive solar heating by opening curtains, sealing up gaps in your building where air sneaks in and turning down your thermostat when you leave home.

Superannuation dreams The dream of a retirement bach in the Bay of Plenty has been around for many years.

The dream became a little upmarket in the 80s but, by the 90s, the baches had been replaced with million dollar homes and the real estate market was loaded with unwanted two bedroom units. Retirement homes are the latest version of our sunset dreams and are touted as a major growth industry for the Bay. This solution will not last for long either. Like all dreams, we have to work for them and pay for them.

We are currently being bombarded with opinions on when we should retire, how much pension we will get and, of course, how much we won’t get unless we provide for ourselves. The real problem, never mentioned in all these debates is how old you will be when you are too old and have lost the opportunity to provide for yourself and your hangers on.

With less than 40% of the workforce in any work at all, you are working to provide superannuation for yourself and one and a half extra people. How old will you be when you decide to retire?

Cost of a free lunch?

The young lad on TV last week saw nothing strange in expecting a free lunch. His life policy seemed to be that he’s happy to join the one and a halfers expecting support for the rest of their lives.

The politicians’ current debate is caught up in the detail of superannuation. Mr Key knows that the opposition will have a field day if he goes back on his promise of leaving the age for pensions at 65. Winston Peters is enjoying singing counterpoint behind him. Already resentment is rising over the freeloaders. We are now warned that we will have to save 10% of our income for our old age and may not expect to get anything until we are 75. Let’s forget about retirement for a moment and look at the life that this planning is defining for us and our children.

A school leaver, who starts work at 16 and retires at 70, will have worked for 54 years.

He won’t have been responsible officially for a family until he is 30. The old chestnut of life beginning at 40 will have to shift on a bit. Forty used to be seen as an age for new beginnings. This was the time when the kids were basically off your hands and it was time to branch out and rejoin the human race. How does the idea of life beginning at 50 sound?

Mid-life dilemma

This mid-life crisis is evident already and featured in the news this week. A 50-yearold reported on his difficulties in finding a job at his age. If the figures are right he should expect to contribute to his super for the next 20 years.

They can play with the numbers, but if there’s no chance of being employed for 54 years, the planning and promises are rubbish and only political grandstanding.

An even more important problem is emerging in the Bay. New Zealand has been warned that seven per cent of our population is over 65 and this will rise to 10 per cent by 2020. Katikati already has 37 per cent of its population over 65.

The Productivity Commission warned of the need to address this aging population problem and I invited them to come to Katikati and study at firsthand the problem they were trying to solve for 2050. No-one has taken me up on my offer. It looks like Katikati will have to solve its own problems.

The town has been recognised already by the Ministry of Science and Innovation for having more innovative ideas than any other equivalent town in New Zealand. We were recognised but no-one has come to find out why. There are many highly qualified and experienced semi-retirees around town. They are probably baby boomers and are now being given the opportunity to lead our society in new ways of releasing their potential and finding new ways of allowing people to live fulfilling lives, from 15 all the way to 70. If a Katikati solution can be developed, only then will the discussion in the papers on retirement age and sunset dreams be relevant.

Housing trends going green The latest environment summit Rio+20 is a reminder of the increasing focus on sustainability, but with your house being most people’s biggest investment, what can home-buyers do to be more sustainable?

This is the theme of the inaugural Sustainable Housing Summit being held in Auckland on June 27, which will update designers and builders on the latest thinking on green homes.

The summit has been organised by industry group New Zealand Green Building Council which is dedicated to accelerating the development and adoption of market-based green building practices.

Council chief executive Alex Cutler says New Zealand is facing some substantial challenges in the residential building area and the summit aims to get the industry considering how the best ideas can be translated into sustainable building systems and practices.

She says the summit aims to inspire designers and builders to help “deliver healthy, efficient, affordable and sustainable homes for New Zealanders”.

Leading international sustainable architect Bill Dunster, from UK’s ZEDfactory which specialises in zero energy developments, is the summit’s keynote speaker. Other topics include urban intensifi-

cation and renovating homes to add sustainable value.

A report released last month estimated that green homes accounted for 17 per cent of the building market in the US in 2011 and is forecast to rise to 29-38 per cent by 2016.

The McGraw-Hill Construction report ‘New and Remodelled Green Homes’ says market growth is being driven by the fact that green homes are seen as being of higher quality and having the ability to save consumers money.

Food store grants couple dream holiday When Morris and Marie Dunn purchased chips for their bar in Mount Maunganui they never thought it would lead to a dream holiday of their choice.

The couple are the lucky winners from Tauranga Gilmours’ annual Birthday Bash competition.

Gilmours Tauranga is a locally owned and operated wholesale food and beverage business supporting the Western Bay of Plenty and Coromandel Peninsula.

In celebration of its 47th birthday, Gilmours ran a competition which put customers who purchased specific items in a draw for a $10,000 prize.

Owner/operator Bryan Guilford says Gilmours’ birthday bash celebration, which ran from May 14-27, was a great two weeks.

“It was a fantastic promotion with a great lift in sales which I put down to the tremendous support we get from our customers.”

Morris and Marie, who own Mt Turf and Sports Bar, say they purchased Eta chips for

their bar, and were very excited to learn they had won.

The couple could choose what their $10,000 went towards, with options ranging from a holiday, kitchen renovations, furniture or credit. They chose the Ultimate Dream Holiday provided by House of Travel.

“It was very exciting; nothing like that has happened before.”

Marie says they have not yet decided where they will travel to.

“We might wait a year or so, we’re looking at later next year.”

The secret behind weight loss Why do you do what you do, when you know what you know?

That was the question posed by Dr. Libby – one of Australia’s leading nutrition specialists – in a speaking engagement at Hotel Armitage on Monday night.

The trained dietician, who holds a PhD in biochemistry and now lives in Auckland, was continuing her northward journey on a nationwide speaking tour.

New Zealand has the second highest rate of obesity in the world for a myriad of reasons, she says.

Misinformation is one of those.

“Right now you could walk into a book shop and pick up a book that says eat bucket loads of carbohydrates because they’re good for energy and then right beside there will be a book that says don’t eat carbs because they make you fat and tired. So, it can be really hard for people to make sense of conflicting information, so my seminars really help people make sense of what is going to work for them.”

She stresses the need for people to avoid heavily processed foods, believes many people have a good baseline of knowledge and hopes critical mass will be gained on

the nutritional front when people collectively realise the complexity of the issue.

“My seminars really help them see that what you eat versus how much you move is not the entire picture when it comes to body shape and size.”

She says time-poor people are increasingly being locked into cycles that force the nervous system to burn glucose instead of stored fat.

Stress hormones influence moods, cravings and food intake and people should aim to have nutrition in each bite they take, she says.

She describes shows like The Biggest Loser as ‘very intense’, and believes they have both good and bad points.

“My worry is that they communicate to people that the only way to weight lose is to not eat very much and work yourself into the ground with exercise until you can’t function.

“I think what’s inspiring for people to see is that very overweight people can lose weight and get an outcome, but what I care about very much is the sustainability of that. I know this

is a pretty rich statement coming from a nutritionist expert but it’s usually not about the food.

“I believe that for someone to lose weight and to keep it off then a much bigger shift has happened inside them on an emotional level.”

Eating healthily and keeping active is an important focus at the Children’s Garden childcare centre in Welcome Bay – and next week their efforts pay off with receipt of a Healthy Heart Gold Award.

Head teacher Nicole Van Den Berg is pleased to get the award’s recognition but says the big reward from emphasising nutrition is helping children develop good attitudes to healthy food.

“The parents love knowing the children are having healthy morning and afternoon teas, and it’s great for the children to learn about food and where it comes from.”

Regular children’s activities include helping in the centre’s garden, taking part in weekly swimming and gymnastic sessions, along with helping prepare a vegetable soup every week.

Heart Foundation’s Tauranga health promotion coordinator Briar Macken says it is great to see childcare centres getting involved and has just given silver awards to Top Kids Ngatai Rd and 4Woods (Te Puke).

“There are so many creative and exciting ways of encouraging healthy lifestyles from a young age. It is so important for this age group to be aware of the importance of good nutrition and active movement so they can make healthy choices as they get older.”

Volunteers the heart of organisation This week is Volunteer Awareness Week, a week which gives people a chance to acknowledge

Kick-starting promising IT careers It might be half-way through the academic year but it is the perfect time to take your first step towards a well-paid career in the fast-growing IT and computing sector.

Places are fast filling up for Bay of Plenty Polytechnic’s entry level course the Diploma in Applied Computing Level 5, which starts a new intake in semester two from mid-July. Polytechnic IT group leader Ray Scott says the mid-year intake means students can get a ‘jump-start’ on training, instead of delaying study plans until next year.

“It is a great course for anyone interested in pursuing a career in the field – with the opportunity to exit with qualifications after a year or two, or just carry on for another year and complete a BSc in Applied Computing through Waikato University.”

Ray says the Diploma in Applied Computing covered a wide variety of areas, compared to other courses which are more narrowly-focused, opening up a range of career opportunities. “It will open the door to entry level positions as a software engineer, or a network engineer or helpdesk or junior programmer – particularly if students go on and complete the degree.”

Ray says the Level 5 course provides students with a working knowledge of the IT needs of small to medium enterprises, including IT infrastructure, networking and programming.

Hundreds of people attended the event created by the Bay of Plenty Wedding Guide Network - a collective of wedding professionals - at Mills Reef Winery on Sunday, June 17.

Bay Bridal Suite director Raye Drake says the day went ‘really, really, well’.

“It was a most enjoyable day.”

Raye says the group has received fantastic feedback from the public regarding the event, including comments such as: ‘What a won-

derful day to be a part of ’ and ‘Very well put together’.

The fashion parade was the big hit of the day.

“It was incredible; it was one of those things, I believe, where we under-promised but overdelivered.”

The fashion show displayed bridal-wear from the Bay’s main bridal houses: Corina Snow Bridal Couture, Bay Bridal Suite and Vanilla Bridal, menswear from Sir Couture and lingerie from Temptations.

“I think the fashion show did bring people in.”

Raye also says the venue was spectacular.

“When you walked in it just

looked like a fairy tale.”

The event was designed to offer expert advice to the entire wedding party and help couples create some of the Bay’s most talked about weddings.

“Everything was covered; everybody was there, from the wedding planner to a honeymoon destination.

“Because there is only four of us in the network, people weren’t inundated with the same thing all the time.”

Based on the feedback she has received, Raye says the BOP Wedding Guide will plan another event for next year.

Award for Ford’s new engine Ford Motor Company’s new 1.0litre EcoBoost engine has been named 2012 “International Engine of the Year” based on votes cast by 76 journalists from 35 countries around the world.

The small, high-tech three-cylinder engine also hauled in two other awards

– “Best New Engine” and “Best Engine Under 1.0-litre.” The awards were presented by Engine Technology International magazine.

This marks the first time Ford has won “International Engine of the Year” in the 13-year history of the awards. Moreover, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost garnered the highest score in the history of the awards.

Joe Bakaj, Ford vice president, Global Powertrain says the company set the bar incredibly high when it set out to design this engine.

“We wanted to deliver eye-popping fuel economy, surprising performance, quietness and refinement – and all from a very small, three-cylinder engine,” says Joe. “The team responded to this seemingly impossible challenge with some really exciting innovation,” added Joe. “The result is a game-changer for petrol engines globally.”

Dean Slavnich, chairman of the “International Engine of the Year” awards and editor of Engine Technology International says this is a fitting victory for a truly remarkable engine.

The engine – small enough to fit on an A4 sheet of paper – was designed at Ford’s technical centres in Dunton, UK, and Merkenich, Germany.

The engine is built in Ford’s plants in Craiova, Romania, and Cologne, Germany.

The 1.0-litre EcoBoost uses low-inertia turbos to deliver power quickly when the throttle is opened from low RPM and deliver high power at speeds of up to 248,000 RPM. Further 1.0-litre EcoBoost innovations include an exhaust

manifold, cast into the cylinder head that lowers the temperature of exhaust gases to enable the optimum fuel-to-air ratio across a wider rev band.

Ford has also built a unique cast iron block, which warms the engine more quickly than a conventional aluminium block to cut by 50 percent the amount of “warm-up” energy required, and cut fuel consumption.

Two main engine drive belts are immersed in oil to deliver a quieter, more efficient engine.

Offsetting the engine configuration by deliberately “unbalancing” the flywheel and pulley instead of adding energy-draining balancer shafts is another clever innovation designed by Ford.

You don’t know what’s around the corner You never know what’s around the corner writing a column, week by week, especially the unexpected.

It is therefore sad to record the passing away, unexpectedly, of Tauranga City Council chief executive Ken Paterson last Sunday night. Ken was an ebullient Scotsman with a delightful Scots accent and turn of phrase.

He had been CEO for just under one year.

This council is looking to meet with the changing financial environment NZ and the world is experiencing and this was Ken’s mission upon his employment. Things don’t change quickly in local (or central) government but the first steps are underway and will continue, in my opinion, because they have to. I had spoken to Ken, one-on-one, just the week before about the change required and how important it was to consider all options and whether council/ ratepayers needed to be paying or involved for this and that. Coming from the private sector he had similar ideas and a few leftfield ideas that would have been interesting.

Deepest sympathy to Ken’s family on this sad loss.

Meetings postponed

Consequently Monday’s and Tuesday’s meetings were cancelled as the organisation reels and regroups. The organisation revolves around the office of the CEO. Council has a strong management executive and deputy chief executive Christine Jones will step up in the interim as council considers the way forward.

Matters postponed include proposed make up of the advisory group for the Historic Village, which is to include two elected members, (recommendation Crs Murray Guy and Catherine Stewart), two community representatives (recommended Pauline Cowens and Karen Wallace), two village tenant representatives to be selected by tenants. A chairman will be appointed from within the Advisory Group. This is an advisory board to council staff, who will still run the village. As I understand it, this group has an advisory role not an administrative role and council staff will still be ultimately responsible to council for the village.

Dinghies on Pilot Bay beach are on the

agenda again. The way I see it is that they are not causing a problem and add to the waterfront scene.

Most are for mooring owners and a few are derelict. The proposed boardwalk/walkway placement will need to be part of the consideration. At this time a proposed registration system (and no doubt associated fee which isn’t mention in the report) won’t get my support. Staff say there are 68 dinghies and if you are prepared to leave your dinghy there and take the associated risks, then that is the fee.

More of a problem to public access are the outrigger canoes and the storage shed that was once the Mount Yacht Club starting box.

The big issue coming up is whether or not the new TECT Arena at Baypark should be owned by TCVL – the council CCO that administers the arena. This will be an interesting debate considering council’s recent experience with TCAL, which owns and operates the aquatics network, and the unfortunate consequences of the Mount Hot Pools renovations.

On Thursday as The Weekend Sun went to press council was to attend the signing of the first local Treaty of Waitangi Settlement of Historic Claims at the Te Ranga battle site.

There are three other claims to be settled.

Like it or dislike it, agree or disagree, the settlements are a reality and have the potential to be a new financial influence in the future of our city. Re-reading the history of both the Battle of Gate Pa and Te Ranga is a telling commentary on British Colonial policy and the way things were in those days. It also depends from whose point of view the relative history was written. At school we learned about the Maori Wars. Today it’s the Land Wars. As has been noted before this is not the first full and final settlement of Maori grievances pertaining to the colonial era but this one must be, in my opinion.

On Wednesday there is an ‘elected members only’ meeting between all three councils – city, regional and Western Bay district.

Someone described it as a ‘group hug’. By comparison we are told by central government we are an example of good cross boundary relationships.

Breaking down borders

The Smartgrowth concept has played a part in this. And in past years with explosive, bordering on out of control, growth there is in hindsight a positive, if expensive, role for Smartgrowth. Now it should be reconsidered

to consolidate the growth and plan how to stand still and maintain the status quo. You could rename it Con-growth or Stillgrowth.

Smartgrowth has around $6-$8 million in direct costs by my estimate and more in indirect costs. It’s also gained some and certainly the ‘JOG’ money of around $175 million from central government for regional roads over 10 years was a direct result of the Smartgrowth concept.

TECT award

In other news, TECT Arena at Baypark has won a merit award from the Property Council. NZTA has advised funding for 2012-13 is up 3.8% for local roads from that anticipated. The K Valley Rotary Centennial Trust has been granted $180,000 by the Ministry for the Environment for 40,000 native trees on the ‘island’ area off Faulkner Street. The Southern Pipeline construction from Maleme Street to Memorial Park is now operational. Investigations and options for the crossing of the harbour to Matapihi are ongoing.

Hairy Maclary

Hairy Maclary waterfront site has now been determined and Government has granted $180,000. Contrary to opinion in some quarters, council/ratepayers are not funding the $800,000 or so for this project. Creative Tauranga are co-ordinating collection of this money, which also includes an amount, in cash, for council to hold that will pay for ongoing maintenance.

Baycourt will cost ratepayers $1.699 million this year. Add this to Creative Tauranga grant and Tauranga Art Gallery grant, museum collection costs and the Arts and Heritage contribution starts to add up – around $3 million.

TECT election is underway to elect three of the six seats on the trust board. This fund has a great effect on our city’s well being.

Voting numbers are traditionally low and for this reason it is extremely important that if you value the contribution TECT makes to the community, you carefully research the candidates you vote for. A split vote outcome, where too many candidates reduce the number of votes required to get a seat, can allow unsuitable candidates to succeed.

Unfortunately, like all democracy, it can be a name recognition contest, not an ability contest. Careful study of candidate’s profiles will show clearly what I mean.

Superannuation age should rise - experts The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has released a report suggesting the age of retirement should rise and that private pension coverage should be expanded.

According to the report, the New Zealand Government needs to raise retirement ages gradually to address increasing life expectancy in order to ensure that our national pension system is both affordable and adequate.

Dorothy Seymour from Coastal Districts BOP Grey Power believes it is a necessity to increase the age of retirement.

“It depends on people’s health and finances really. People are living longer but are they living a quality life? Another point to consider is that with all the people moving to Australia, people like us will be leaving our children’s inheritance to people living in Australia.

That will be a lot of money leaving the country too,” says Dorothy.

Western Bay of Plenty Grey Power president Warren Townsend believes people should be asked

what they want.

“We can’t speak for everyone, but my suggestion is to conduct a paper survey on this question.

Personally, I think there is a suggestion that previous Governments have misappropriated money that was set aside for superannuates.

But this does not address the problem of not having enough money to please all the people.”

Over the next 50 years, life expectancy at birth is expected to increase by more than 7 years in developed economies. The long-term retirement age in half of OECD countries will be 65, and in 14 countries it will be between 67 and 69. The Pensions Outlook 2012 says that increases in retirement ages are

underway or planned in 28 out of the 34 OECD countries.

These increases, however, are expected to keep pace with improved life expectancy in only six countries for men and in 10 countries for women.

The report recommends governments consider formally linking retirement ages to life expectancy, as in Denmark and Italy, and make greater efforts to promote private pensions.

Obesity is a huge problem and there is a flow on effect to families.

“We give the competitors healthy food education and nutritional information. This is not a short term solution. A lot of people actually already know what they should do but not really why.”

Jen says they have also set a males only meeting, if preferred, and although they don’t specifically have a women only meeting, there are some that have worked out that way.

The challenge is open to anyone and current members range in age from 20 years old to over 70 years old.

Nutrients to reduce heart disease risk When it comes to heart-health, the objectives are to support your body’s natural processes that help promote cardiovascular health.

The first step is to maintain high levels of a wide range of dietary antioxidants. These help prevent oxidation of cholesterol and remember from last week that it is trapped oxidised cholesterol that is the problem, not the relatively benign cholesterol circulating in our blood.

Cholesterol, like any body lipid (fat) is highly susceptible to oxidation. When LDL is assembled in liver cells, the fat soluble antioxidants vitamin E and CoQ10 are packaged with the LDL. This is to protect the LDL against oxidation, which is the first step to formation of plaques. The problem is that most people do not get anywhere near enough vitamin E from diets and routinely prescribed statin cholesterol lowering drugs can reduce levels of both critical antioxidants (Colquhoun DM, et al. 2005).

For heart health, I firstly make sure that diet and supplements cover all the major antioxidant groups but specifically grape seed flavanols are around 200mg, vitamin E at 200-400IU and vitamin C at least 1000mg. To this I often add other cardioprotective antioxidants including CoQ10, lipoic acid, resveratrol, acai, green tea, bilberry and goji extracts.

Any person taking statin drugs should be working to a specific heart health plan and on top of a good multi antioxidant/ vitamin/mineral and Omega 3 should take 100mg of high grade Co Q10 daily.

To conclude, preventing heart disease is a lot more than reducing cholesterol.

32 Sheer lunacy: While the present location of Mount Information Centre may not be perfect from a visual aspect, from a practical aspect it is about as good as it gets. At the entry to the Mount, near the cruise ships and adjoins the Police Station.

It is sheer lunacy to think of moving it to the Mount Camping Ground offices which is at the end of a limb at the base of the Mount, has no visual presence, no parking and would be difficult to get access to. A possible option is to combine Information offices at Salisbury

Avenue with Mount Mainstreet offices.

Tourism BOP comes up with inane schemes and not long ago, as I recall, it was chasing around $800,000 from Council. It has a prime position in Tauranga CBD yet is an underwhelming achiever, funded almost entirely from targeted rates. With this sort of nonsense and a propensity to protect its own existence, the only conclusion is close Tourism BOP down before it causes real harm. TCC could contract out the services currently provided and probably receive money in doing so.

Good samaritans

A few weeks ago we were on our way back from our bach at Tairua and towing a trailer when we got ominous car problems. We had taken a short cut to Katikati bypassing Waihi and were desperate to make it to the T junction at Old Tauranga Rd onto the highway, before the car gave up altogether!

We did get there and the car did give up, giving off lots of steam as it did so. Luckily for us, two vehicles stopped within 10 minutes. The first was a car carrying a couple who were keen to help, but didn’t think they could tow both car and trailer.

While we were pondering that, the second vehicle stopped. It was a pickup carrying two returning fishermen and towing a small boat. We all stood about in the rapidly darkening gloom, trying to think what to do since all agreed that the engine could not be started.

Finally,it was decided that the car would tow the boat and the pickup would tow our car and trailer and we would all meet up at Katikati.

Bear in mind that no one knew each other or their names! After quite a stressful tow to Katikati, we all got out and had a chat and found that both of our good samaritans were on their way to Mt Maunganui and were going past the bottom of our drive, insisting that it was no trouble to drop us off there.

Again we set off and in no time we arrived at Pahoia, where we were unhooked and the boat was transferred back to the pickup. After we had given our extremely grateful thanks and goodbyes had been said, everyone went their separate ways. Our wonderful helpers would not accept anything for their very kind and totally unselfish efforts, without which we could have been left on the road for several hours! We should be proud that New Zealand has such people.

Misinterpreting reality Mr Key seems to be misinterpreting reality as so many highly placed New Zealanders do at times. The rebarabative comment he keeps making that “We have a mandate to sell assets, see the election results.

It was part of our portfolio that we would sell assets.

If the electorate didn’t want us to sell they wouldn’t have voted for us.” Here we have the leader of the country who misinterprets realty on a continual basis to what negative outcomes one has to wonder. People didn’t vote national so they could sell assets they voted national to get rid of Labour. The way Mr Key and his cohorts are behaving people will be voting him out at the next election for the same reason, to get rid of him.

I doubt if many New Zealanders vote for any other reason than to just get rid of those currently holding the treasury benches and making their life miserable which sadly every party in NZ is really good at.

Carrying on VE debate Whenever the topic of voluntary euthanasia arises, the opposition reaches for the figures on abortion.

Seems likely that most of us would like to see that total heavily reduced. But what to do? Easy, ban it. Been there, done that, doesn’t work. As has been pointed out by serious students of the issues, women will always make the decisions and, whether it is legal or illegal, will seek and obtain abortions.

Sarcastic dismissal of opponent’s arguments? Not really a convincing way of carrying on a debate.

Eyeing the election candidates As a good friend of mine, John, remarked recently, elections bring out the very best and the very worst in people.

We both agreed that we are seeing that locally right now.

I said the good things about elections are the fact that they give people an opportunity to have a say, and make a choice. They also give the people standing an opportunity to put their credentials on the table, and stand up and be counted.

Many of those eligible to vote simply don’t do so. And some of those standing choose to bag and belittle other candidates, or those already in office, often to distract from deficiencies in their own credentials, and instead of offering constructive ideas and telling us why they believe they can do a better job than anybody else.

Those candidates know that confusion usually results in low voter turnout, and split votes, which means some of the less

worthy manage to slip into office.

Not because they would be any good at the job, but because some of the perennially unhappy people of this world, who often make up a large percentage of voters in a low voter turnout, seem to like to rattle some cages – dangerous as that rattling may be.

I told John that he needs to encourage everybody he knows that is eligible to vote, particularly those with a positive outlook on life, to

do so, and that in my view, “the eyes have it”.

“You mean the ayes have it, surely?” asked John.

“No I really did mean the eyes,” I replied. “I reckon voters need to whittle down the list of candidates to those they believe have the knowledge and experience to run a billion dollar operation that the community depends upon. Make the effort to talk to those candidates if you can, and look them straight in the eye. Ask them about their credentials, and whether they can work constructively with others for everybody’s benefit. And also ask them for an assurance they won’t be standing for the council elections next year, which if they were successful, would mean they couldn’t be able to see out their full term if elected this time. Watch their eyes closely, and if they blink excessively, or can’t keep eye contact, just remember that the eyes really do have it.”

Change needed at trustee level I fully support TECT as a concept and agree that we consumers should receive all the benefit both directly by way of the dividend payments and indirectly through the community grants which make our community a better place to live in.

TECT’s ability to give back to this community is determined by the decision making of the trustees and by the cohesiveness of the Board. I have been frustrated for some time now at what I see as some very negative and disruptive behaviour at trustee level in TECT. While TECT “ain’t broke” and does not need fixing, a change is needed at trustee level. I am therefore joining the 22 other candidates in the forth-

coming trustee elections.

Change can only occur if people are motivated to vote.

Three years ago the voice of the people was heard clearly with high voter turnout over TECT community grants.

The consumers need to “speak” again. I urge all consumers to vote and to vote carefully.

For the record, I declare that my law firm acts for TECT. If elected I will of course take all steps necessary to ensure there is no conflict of interest.

I make this statement to pre-empt any conspiracy accusations.

It is this type of accusation and negativity which has led me to stand.

Strange notions from a previous election Transparency need not mean stupidity?

I noticed in a couple of recent issues of The Weekend Sun, letters written by TECT hopeful Mark Groos and his team. If I remember rightly he came up with several strange notions at a previous election which were completely demolished by a record number of voters at a special (and costly) referendum he forced onto TECT voters at that time.

It seems like we are on the same path yet again.

This time he suggests the TECT Board acts in a secretive manner with important decisions being

made in private, without public participation or scrutiny. He specifically appears to target a lack of “transparency”. I find this notion rather strange.

If Mr Groos is suggesting that the actual Board deliberations, where they discuss the merits or suitability of the many applications they receive; be open to the public, this would make a complete mockery of the process and totally inhibit any meaningful discussion re the results of the close scrutiny each application must receive.

For over 30 years I have had a close involvement with most funding agencies both locally and

at a national level. I can tell him that they are all envious with the substance and the utterly professional manner in which TECT has been constituted; and continues to operate. I am not aware of any other agency that communicates to, and with, their ‘public’ to the same extent as TECT. While at a meeting in Wellington two weeks ago with other funding providers, including the Charities Commission, they had great difficulty following this notion. They are not aware of a funding agency anywhere that subscribes to Mr Groos’s view.

Open Letter to TECT Consumers from Ken Collings Let’s celebrate TECT, past winner of NZ’s Premier Trust Award and a Trust that makes Tauranga a better place for us all. A trustee for eight years, I see the evidence of this almost daily.

Each November, TECT has sent a cheque to all TECT Consumers and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. This year will be the best yet.

We’ve supported volunteers in this community who have made big things happen with their TECT grants. Whether it be in education, sports, arts and culture, or for flagship events like the Airshow, the Arts Festival and the Aims Games, the TECT name is ever present.

TECT has also contributed to the lifestyles we lead and the choices we have in the Bay. We have the TECT All Terrain Park which is being shaped into an outstanding resource for this region; the TECT Arena is up and pumping, and Baywave TECT Aquatic & Leisure Centre remains a jewel in the crown for the city’s aquatic network.

So, when it comes time to vote, please consider who you want to look after TECT (which is one of this region’s most significant financial assets) so that it may continue to flourish and provide. If you believe TECT needs someone with proven experience and strong financial and commercial skills, someone who can work successfully alongside the other five TECT trustees, then please cast a vote for me.

Kaipara rate hikes are coming to Tauranga Reports on Sunlive about Kaipara Council recently highlight the huge financial consequences are at an advanced stages of coming home to roost!

The project in Kaipara Sewerage Project was based on the same growth assumptions and not enough reality.

The consequence for Tauranga is most likely the same The misfortune for the previously content citizens of Kaipara has been rocked to the foundations then they received notice of the next years likely rate increases, some as much as 1300% (i.e. $6,400 to $85,000pa).

The project in Kaipara ($80m cost, $35m over budget) is significantly smaller than Tauranga’s Southern Pipeline & Te Maunga Plant upgrade plans which have already increased from $19m in 2004 to close to $300m in 2011.

This will all be funded by debt and the plan to date is that subdivision and building fees will pay it all off, yeah right!

But with the drop in growth (ratepayers paid $8m+ to Smart Growth and it is all proved to be horribly wrong) and building activity. TCC have even reduced these fees recently (trying to stimulate the payment of more fees?) the chances of it being repaid as planned will likely fail, especially that more houses will need to be built to get the same building fee income to pay off an increasing debt.

The only outcome here is that the debt will fall upon ratepayers and rates will have to increase significantly sooner or later I Stevenson, Tauranga.

Prime Minister, John Key, and Tauranga MP, Simon Bridges, have said that they do not agree with the proposed winter period (only) power discount for SuperGold cardholders. Why? Because the Government will have to borrow some $30 odd million from overseas to fund it.

What arrant nonsense! Currently, the Crown (all of us) owns the power generating companies. It is easy to trace from which of them the retailers source their power, and in what proportion. Accordingly, the rebated discounts can then be charged back to them on that basis. The $30 odd million (if that’s what it would amount to) spread over the generating companies would be infinitesimal relative to their total profits.

And in the event of a partial sale of these entities, a condition of sale could easily be included that the ‘discount charge back provision’ be kept in place. The rebated discounts could either be a charge against each company’s total profits); or charged against the Crown’s share of the profits. Either way, there is no substance to the claim that the Government would need to borrow from overseas to pay for the rebated discounts.

The proposal could be further streamlined by giving the discount to only those cardholders who also have a Community Services Card, which is noted on the rear of each SuperGold card. That would identify the group most in need.

A further point that Key and Bridges have overlooked is that this proposal will directly benefit those many impoverished Maori that they, and the Maori Party, express so much concern about. All qualifying cardholders regardless of background would share the benefits of this scheme.

Dey ‘makes liars Captain: ‘We could of his ancestors’ have salvaged Rena’ Peter Dey is taking Maori history from a few books written by persons who are just as in the dark as he is about who the first inhabitants of New Zealand were.

These books are only the opinions of the writers, based on what they interpret as fact. There has been a great cover up of the truth, for reasons known only to the Govt when proofs of pre-Maori are discovered they are being hidden. There is plenty of evidence if you look a little deeper.

Mr Dey is calling his ancestors liars if he persists with this fantasy that Maori were here first. The Maori handed down their history orally and spoke of landing here in canoes (Wakas) and found there were people here before them. If the Maori found this country in flimsy wakas crossing dangerous oceans not knowing where they were going to end up, what makes him believe that others did not do the same centuries before? Mr. Dey has the audacity to say Europeans stole land from Maori, when Maori stole it from the peoples here before them (it’s in their oral history, or is that a fabrication?) Well boo hoo, it’s happened to every nation all through history, get over it. Maori are compensated with all the technology, civilisation and benefits provided for them. They now have $37 billion in assets how much more are they going to bleed honest working men and women for?

It’s time they got real and understood that they were conquered and at the same time got protection through the Treaty, which they begged for.

Maori did not compensate Moriori for killing and eating their families and stealing land they lived on.

Some Moriori survived the Maori holocaust.

Why should even 1% (as Mr Dey claims) be taken off the hard working NZ citizen to give to a greedy sector of NZ and at the same time Key and local councils are borrowing to keep us afloat and plunging us into eternal debt.

I am reliably informed by one member of Maritime New Zealand that they intend to remove two halves of Rena off the reef. This will cost the taxpayer, you and me, an estimated 300 to 400 million dollars, and all this when we’re in a recession. The only people to benefit from this are the salvors, Swizter part of Smits of Rotterdam.

Myself and another man, once the head of the dry dock in Wellington reckoned that we could have salvaged the Rena.

Some facts – TCC engaged Opus to provide a report at a cost of $50,000. Tauranga City Council knee-jerked and then got in Nutech security guards at huge cost while deciding $800,000 needs to be spent up on the walkway. How ridiculous is that!!

I took the time to fully inspect the Matapihi Bridge last Saturday mid-morning and noted no security guards were posted, virtually no one on or near the walkway. Currently TCC have put in place expensive crowd-control type fencing on the open side and expensive zinc piping on the inside rail, a complete overkill and it has to be seen to be believed! Cost is no object, obviously. The fault with the walkway is not safety but the complete lack of regular maintenance and you just need to check out the Karangahake Gorge bridges and see the difference.

Conclusion reached after due enquiry is that repair costs should not exceed $100,000 which would make the walkway very safe although it would not provide $1 million gold-plated, upmarket version some of the spendthrifts are baying for.

Welfare isn’t working

It started in the early 70’s when Britain joined the EEC and the first petrol price shock hit.

It was even ‘cool’ to be on the dole, if I can remember back that far. I spent time in New Zealand & Australia collecting money for being unemployed, about a month or two in each case. It didn’t make me a better person. These days we have large sectors of our society using welfare to continue to fail, and into the next generation & beyond. We, in effect, pay them for failing.

They are monetarily rewarded for doing nothing.

This large, and getting larger, bottom end is dragging New Zealand to its knees. Over 300,000 working aged people are either useless or sick. Struth, there’s only 2 million of us that work for money to start with.

Single parent and multi-partner households that can’t seem to do much without getting into trouble are costing us all our future. It’s time to think up a new strategy. Welfare isn’t working!

In the UK we towed a 23,000 battleship upside down only kept afloat by compressed air. During this trip of eight days 15 men lived aboard keeping the compressors going. Later we towed a tanker from Spain with only half a bottom in her. She was supported by compressed air. The problem was what do you do with the Rena then. You keep towing a hundred miles or so to deepwater and sink her.

A little country hoedown I often think that country music gets a kinda raw deal in New Zealand.

Along with the blues, it seems to be a genre that is both remarkably popular and largely overlooked by mainstream radio, television and pretty much any other outlet for music.

Actually country music does a little better than blues, but it’s mainly through the perseverance of fans, which is yet another indication of its grassroots level popularity: there are country clubs in most towns, there are the annual Country Music Awards in Gore, and there is an annual Tui Award for Best Country album. There are also – pretty much everywhere you go – country music jam sessions, the most popular in Tauranga happening every Wednesday night at the Crown and Badger on The Strand.

Country history

We also have a rich heritage of country music stretching back to Tex Morton and beyond and taking in bands like the Warratahs, still going strong, touring and releasing great music.

And a veritable legend of the country scene is coming to Tauranga’s Mills Reef in a couple of weeks so, if you’re a fan, get ready for a hoedown!

One of the prime New Zealand country bands was the Hamilton County Bluegrass Band. Once upon a time, before TV programmers eliminated such things, there used to be what was called ‘light entertainment’ on television, programmes where bands and singers presented their tunes each week. This was of course in the days before all such pleasures were replaced by fatuous rigged music competitions promising instant stardom and multiple revenue streams for the producers.

But not long ago New Zealand had a show called

That’s Country. DVDs of the series have been released over the past couple of years to considerable success. However, the pioneers in that field were the Hamilton County Bluegrass Band.

Big time fiddler

In the late sixties these guys were the biggest thing around. They had their own TV show called Country Touch.

And the focal point of the band was their extraordinary fiddler, Colleen Trenwith.

Back in those days she played everywhere with the band, toured Australia with country icon Slim Dusty, and even travelled to Nashville to play at the Grand Ole Opry, which is about the equivalent of a jazz musician playing at the New Orleans festival – pretty high cotton, whoever you are.

And Colleen’s been getting to know Nashville and Tennessee a lot better in recent times.

In 2008 she took up an opportunity to study music at The University of East Tennessee, and two years later she was enlisted as a full-time tutor. It’s not often that a Kiwi gets taken seriously in the American country music industry, let alone gets invited to teach university courses in the home of country music.

If any confirmation of Colleen’s talents was needed, then this is a good one.

But Colleen is briefly back in New Zealand and has gotten together with

some old buddies for a short tour. Prior to heading over to the US of A, she spent several years on the Kapiti Coast, collaborating with acts including country rock duo Legal Tender, and swing trio Hot Club Sandwich.

Teaming up talent

Now Legal Tender’s Ian Campbell (guitar) and Moira Howard (bass guitar) have teamed up with Hot Club’s Andrew London (guitar, banjo, piano and mandola) to join Trenwith in a show called Tales of Tennessee, in which she presents a selection of stories and music accumulated over a 40 year career on the stage, focussing on her most recent experiences in and around Tennessee. The repertoire will range from country, western swing and bluegrass tunes popularised by artists such as Guy Clark, Gillian Welch and Alison Krauss to original songs by London, wellknown for his humorous and satirical slant on Kiwi culture.

The quartet is coming to town on Thursday July 12, playing one show at Mills Reef Winery. It’ll be a dinner show with tables ‘n’ all rather than theatre seating, so if you harbour a soft spot for a little fiddling, or a little Hot Club humour, or just want an excuse to wear a cowboy hat in public, grab a ticket before they go. They’re $30 from the winery (phone 576 8800) and are expected to sell out.

THE IDES OF MARCH Dir: George Clooney - Starring: Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, Evan Rachel Wood I’ve always had a soft spot for a US political drama, and this compelling effort comes on something like a more serious take on the Clintonesque dramedy Primary Colours.

As in that film, we follow a relatively young political consultant (Gosling), this time trying to help elect a potential democratic presidential nominee (Clooney). Backroom shenanigans and moral complexities quickly multiply, what with Paul Giamatti and Philip Seymour Hoffman playing rival campaign managers and Wood a seductive and possibly compromising intern. As pressure mounts on him, will Gosling’s idealist turn to the dark side?

With striking blue eyes, Sam Shepard could easily be an older version of Paul Newman’s Butch Cassidy. That’s who he plays in Blackthorn a beautifully shot if somewhat low-key Western which finds the former outlaw living in Bolivia, planning to return to America. Along the way he accidentally teams up with a young thief (Edward Noriega) and meets a Pinkerton detective from his younger days (Stephen Rea). The lack of action thrills is compensated for by a fine control of mood and the resultant meditation on loss, aging and the passing of time makes good use of the stunning locations and charismatic lead.

The remarkable story of America’s (and possibly the world’s) greatest chess player is grippingly explored in Bobby Fischer Against The World Fischer became American Chess Champion in 1958 at the age of 15 and subsequently held the world in thrall during the 1972 World Chess Championship in Iceland, where the cold war was symbolically re-enacted with Russian Boris Spassky. Then long-standing mental problems seemed to overcome him and the rest of his life was a tragic descent into paranoia and antiSemitism. It’s a strange, fascinating story, examining the fine line between genius and madness with sympathy and intelligence.

And if that exemplifies one sort of documentary, taking a specific subject and making it interesting and accessible for everyone, Brian Eno 1971-1977 The Man Who Fell to Earth is another kind.

This is an unauthorised fan-led project and, if you are interested in Eno’s seventies work – Roxy Music, his solo albums and collaborations with Robert Fripp, German band Cluster, and David Bowie - it will prove fascinating. There are few mainstream names interviewed (and the man himself is only briefly on screen) but there are generous contributions from minimalist composers and other obscure notables. And at two and a half hours, there’s an undeniable level of detail.

As with previous directorial outing, Good Night and Good Luck, George Clooney plays things straight, giving space to his excellent cast and trusting the intelligence of his audience. He is also perfect as the candidate, suave and charismatic with just a hint of darkness.

This may struggle to hold its own against the finest of such efforts – The Candidate, All The King’s Men (the original) – but it’s possibly because the malfeasance on display seems relatively small by contemporary standards. After all, any believable fiction will have a hard time matching the sleazy revelations in the recent corruption trial of 2008 candidate John Edwards. But it’s still classy stuff.

Elvis Costello’s musical interview show Spectacle – since it showed at late stupid random times on TV - will be pleased to hear it is now out on DVD. Talking to Steven from Brookfield VideoEzy we both agree this is about the best show if its kind we’ve seen. The interviews are informative, the music is great, the balance between the two perfect. Guests include Elton John, Lou Reed, Jakob Dylan, Norah Jones, Kris Kristofferson, Diana Krall, Smokey Robinson, Herbie Hancock, Rosanna Cash, Tony Bennett and many more.

Talk of astronomical proportions Attention, star-gazers.

Tauranga Astronomical Society is inviting the public to hear a guest speaker who was the world’s first amateur astronomer to image a new solar system in the initial stages of development.

Rolf Olsen found and captured an image of the young star Beta Pictoris from his backyard with a homebuilt 10’’ telescope last year.

Astonishing find

The finding was considered a milestone and sent amateur and professional astronomy circles into a collective sense of astonishment as news of the discovery spread around the world.

Beta Pictoris is 63 light years away and 12 million years old – our solar system is 4.5 billion years old.

Rolf says his talk will detail the image of Beta Pictoris, how it was captured and how it was processed.

He will also show, in a Powerpoint presentation, some photos of his equipment and observatory, as well as other images taken with a modified webcam.

“I have been interested in astronomy as long as I can remember,” says Rolf.

“I grew up in Denmark but immigrated to New Zealand in 2003. I was

attracted by the scenery and lifestyle, and the beautiful southern sky is just amazing. I work as a computer programmer so my familiarity with computers also helps in capturing and processing images of the night sky.

“I’d like to encourage other amateurs to go off the beaten path every now and then and try to photograph some of the more unusual things. There are many exotic targets like quasars, gravitational lenses, distant galaxy clusters etc. that are imaged a lot less often than the more traditional nebulae and Messier objects. And these often have a very interesting story to tell.”

Police launch charity auction Tauranga police have launched their annual CIB charity luncheon fundraiser drive and are calling for the public’s help in donation actionable goods and services.

Local charities are also being invited to send in applications, documenting who they are, what they do and why they need funds.

Detective sergeant Pete Blackwell says they are keen to hear from local charities to be considered as benefactors of the event.

Applications can be sent to Peter Blackwell, Tauranga Police Station, PO Box 144, Tauranga.

Pete says the master of ceremonies for this year’s event is Kerri Woodham, its first female guest speaker.

He says former Australian cricketer Merv Hughes will also be a guest speaker for the October 12 charity luncheon.

Since the launch of the first luncheon in 1995 as a police social club fundraiser, the event has grown to become

one of New Zealand’s top fundraising events with more than one million dollars being raised for charitable trusts across New Zealand.

Pete says the event sells out each year, so they have given people plenty of notice before the luncheon takes place this year in October.

“We have already sold half of the tables, so people wanting to come on the night need to get in fast.”

So far, organisers of the auction have managed to score two signed guitars, one signed by the Little River Band and the other by the Doobie Brothers, which will be part of the auction.

Pete says they also have a 10 per cent share in a racehorse, which has been a popular item every year it has been auctioned off.

Other items of interest include sporting memorabilia, an All Blacks jersey signed by the 1987 Rugby World Cup winning team and a jersey signed by the 2011 winning World Cup team.

Old friends welcomed for concert Friends of the Bay of Plenty Symphonia are holding a concert at the Wesley Church Centre on Sunday, June 24.

The programme will feature former Tauranga soprano Kararaina Walker, who was one of the guest artists to

appear at the first concert presented in 2004.

Since then, she has graduated with a Bachelor of Music, with honours in voice performance, from the University of Waikato, as a Sir Edmund Hillary Scholar.

She has also recently taken a position as vocal specialist at the Waiariki Institue of Technology’s Academy of Singing and Music.

Other guest artists appearing at this year’s concert are flautists Debbie Prince, young violinist Yubin Kang, pianist Phoebe Cho and a Chamber Music Trio, 239 Strings, from Bethlehem College.

The concert begins at 2pm. Admission costs $9 with children under 10 years of age admitted free.

Julia (nee McCarthy) is well-known to New Zealand audiences. In 2008, she graduated from Guildhall in London with a Masters degree with distinc-

tion in both violin and viola. She was awarded a fellowship in 2009 and maintains a busy musical career playing in a number of orchestras and ensembles.

Kristen is one of the country’s most exciting upcoming operatic talents. She has performed regularly with NBR New Zealand Opera, most recently as Olga in Eugene Onegin.

She graduated from the Royal Academy’s Opera Course and was selected as the Dame Malvina Major Young Artist for 2009.

Kirsten studied with Diedre Irons at the University of Canterbury and then went on to the Royal College of Music, where she graduated in both solo and collaborative piano.

Garage sales are a well-known New Zealand tradition in which the thrifty among us trawl through a stranger’s unwanted ‘treasures’.

Deirdre Walker, of Arataki, was beset by heaps of those people on a recent Saturday after advertising her garage sale in The Weekend Sun. In about five hours on a cold morning, Deirdre turned costume jewellery, plates, clothes, linen, ornaments, tools and bits and pieces into $185.

“We didn’t do too badly out of it in the end,” she says.

“We are very happy with it. We put the signs up early and some people came because of the signs and the rest because of the advert they read in The Weekend Sun. Deirdre paid just $19 for the listing in The Weekend Sun, which is delivered to more than 63,430 readers every weekend.

She also received two large, colourful free signs to help direct people to her garage sale.

Church puts lessons to practical use Otumoetai Church of Christ parishioners are going out into the community on Sunday, July 1, to serve in whatever way they can.

This is the third year the church has taken its normal worship time on a few select Sunday mornings to go into the community for what they call ‘Go

Sunday’. Andrew Gearhart, a minister at the church and organiser of Go Sunday, says it is a time for the church to serve as Jesus did. It is important for members to serve the community rather than simply sitting in a building talking about it, says Andrew. The church is making a list of projects for Go Sunday and Andrew says there are a number of spots still open. In the past, the church has completed 10 to

15 projects, such as cleaning up rubbish, baking for neighbours, gardening and singing in rest homes. Go Sunday is a church-wide event in which every member participates.

Christianity going strong despite Lennon’s claims To quote John Lennon, in his song ‘Imagine’ he shared his dream: “Imagine there’s no countries, it isn’t hard to do.

Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too. Imagine all the people, living life in peace…”

Like others, he felt religion was a problem. But humans aren’t quite so simple – we need something to believe in!

It was the French mathemati-

cian, philosopher and physicist Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) who said “There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator, made known through Jesus”.

Whatever it is that we fill that gap with, we humans are spiritual beings! For example, as fewer of us went to church,

more of us started believing in psychics. I don’t know the New Zealand statistics, but in England today, about 67% believe in the power of psychics, according to the Evangelical Alliance in the UK. We humans do have a spiritual part to us, and scientific theories (or even good music) can’t fill it!

The immeasurable greatness of His power The Apostle Paul speaks of praying for the saints in the churches in Asia Minor and he makes these amazing statements that apply to us today if we are genuine disciples of Christ.

Paul prays in Ephesians 1:17-21 to “the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation (of insight into mysteries and secrets) in the (deep and intimate) knowledge of Him, by having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know and understand the hope to which He has called you, and how rich is His glorious inheritance in the saints, and (so that you can know and understand) what is the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His power in and for us who believe, as demonstrated in the working of His mighty strength, which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His (own) right hand in the heavenly (places), far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named (above every title that can

be conferred), not only in this age and in this world, but also in the age and the world which are to come.”

In the midst of these amazing statements about knowing and understanding by insight and revelation about who we are in God and who God is in us, Paul speaks about “the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His power in and for us who believe” which Paul goes on to say is the same power that raised Jesus from the dead.

Can you comprehend that, brothers and sisters in Christ? The same

power that raised Jesus from the dead is both in us and is at work for us!

Paul speaks again of this again in Ephesians 3:20: “Now to Him Who, by the (action of His) power that is at work within us, is able to (carry out His purpose and) do superabundantly, far over and above all that we (dare) ask or think (infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams).”
