Whatever the reason that possesses people to jump off tall things, with only a parachute between them and a potential terminal velocity impact, it must be a good one.

The RR Team has a policy of staying well away from the edges of things.

We’re seeing in politics now what happens when you get too close to the edge of reason. Some of the brothers have fallen right off it.

The chances of dying in a base jumping ‘accident’, if that is the right term, are better than winning the Lotto.

As one Tauranga man found out this week. He went for a haircut, found the barber was closed, so bought the $27m winning ticket instead. The identity of the winner is the worst kept secret in Tauranga. The story goes that he initially announced the win on his Facebook page, but it seemed few believed it. Then he must have got some advice, and retracted it, claiming someone had hacked his account. Ever heard of that happening? What are the chances?

Anyway, here at the Sun, we are respecting his privacy and as per his wishes, won’t be naming him.

Privacy is something that could become a rare commodity for this chap. There is no doubt that 27 million, plus a few other additions, such as a Lamborghini in the driveway, will change his life forever.

Privacy, as the song says, is one of those things you don’t know what you’ve got, till it’s gone.

Just ask Kate. She should know.

What are the chances of getting yourself snapped by a sneaky paparazzi while you’re sunning your royal norks at a supposedly secluded hideaway? Pretty good, if you happen to have married into the most famous family in the world.

Kate would have had a better chance of keeping the Crown mounds hidden from the eyes of the

world, if she’d come to Nizullin for a holiday, rather than running the gauntlet of the dastardly French in Europe. She could have flopped the appendages out happily in the crisp, fresh New Zealand spring air, while the white people still own some of it.

We have some amazing secluded places here, far away from even the lowest sneaky French paparazzi. You’ve more chance of being hit by a falling base jumper than being snapped in your unawares.

Charles and Camilla know this, that’s why they are coming here. The French press will be stampeding AWAY at a great rate, if they think Camilla might start flashing some frontage. You think the exodus from our shores is bad now, imagine the mass evacuations if Charlie is promenading on New Chums Beach in speedos, trying to rub oil into the shadier regions of Camilla, in a thong.

Actually don’t go there.

Meanwhile in the news this week, a great amount of hand wringing and gnashing of teeth over job losses at Kawerau, the popular belief being that falling newspaper pagings (not happening at the Sun!) and reduced demand for newsprint is behind the cutbacks. However, that may not be the whole story.

A reliable source says the redundancies may not be entirely related to a drop in demand for the product. One print industry source says some companies are using more imported newsprint due to reliability of supply; that industrial action and the threat of disruption of locally sourced newsprint supply could be part of the reason some NZ print companies opted to use Asian product.

No action at indoor sports centre More than 1000 users of the Mount Action Centre have been left with nowhere to play and train after the centre’s doors were closed due to outstanding rent of $90,000.

The owners of the Triton Avenue property closed the centre on Monday morning after they and lease holder Andrew Templer failed to come to an arrangement on the outstanding four months’ rent.

Andrew is disappointed but says he does not blame the landlord, who he says has been more than generous and flexible.

“We had a few investors in the pipeline and things haven’t progressed far enough and I guess this is him making a stand to push for the money, which is fair enough.”

Andrew is however seeking the aid of investors to help get the centre back up and running.

“We have this facility built and all ready to go, but we haven’t been able to generate enough interest to pay our way.”

He says the failure is in part

due to the undercutting of payto-play prices by Tauranga City Council through their contract with Tauranga Leisure to provide ratepayer subsidised sports league facilities at the TECT Arena at Baypark.

“They have a contract with Tauranga Leisure to run social sports leagues at the TECT Arena – so they are not supporting us.”

Council manager of recreation relationships Kiri Pope says some sports activities at TECT Arena are funded by ratepayers, but sports leagues are not.

“The sports leagues that Tauranga Leisure used to run at the Mount Action Centre before relocating to TECT Arena work on a revenue generating basis, they need to generate revenue for the facility.”

Kiri says the sports leagues have been running since 2000 and it was always intended these services would move to the TECT Arena when it opened.

“The fees at the TECT Arena are set to create revenue for the facility and reduce council’s overall ratepayer subsidy to run that venue.”

Kiri says the cost to compete varies depending on the sport, what night it is run and for how long.

Andrew says his problems with TCC started in the beginning after they refused to allow him entry to begin the facility refit after the TCC’s lease ended in November 2011.

Andrew says this, combined with heavy rain in January, delayed the re-fit by four months.

Kiri says council did not feel it was appropriate to allow Andrew into the facility to re-fit it when they were still responsible for the building.

“A lot of our activity had relocated to the TECT Arena at the end of August and early-September, but we did still have some activities happening, particularly inline hockey, which went until earlyNovember.”

The fate of the action centre is unknown, but the adjoining skate park run by the Department of Adventure will reopen today at 3.30pm after its owner Kel Travers signed a separate lease with the

Alleged sexual assault investigated Tauranga Police are investigating a possible sexual assault on a 37-year-old woman.

Detective Dianne Lewis says the incident happened

in the vicinity of No 1 The Strand and Cliff Road between 1.30am and 3.30am on Saturday, September 8.

Anyone with information relevant to the investigation can contact Dianne on 5774300.

Police are now treating the disappearance of Rae Portman, who was sighted in the Bay of Plenty before her disappearance, as a homicide investigation.Detective Inspector Mark Gutry of the Counties Manukau Police says the investigation into the disappearance of the 33-year-old woman is now a homicide.

“The elevation to a homicide is based on information received from the public through the 0800 RaePortman and the Crimestoppers phone numbers. Rae Portman was last seen on Wednesday, June 20.

Police hunt armed robbers

Tauranga Police are continuing to hunt for the armed offenders who robbed the Welcome Bay Foodmarket on August 23.

Two men armed with pistols entered the foodmarket on Welcome Bay Road at 6.30pm on Thursday, August 23, and took an undisclosed amount of money from the till before making off on foot. Police say the offenders are described as males, aged in their late teens or 20’s, wearing hoodies and 3/4 length shorts, with bandana’s covering their faces.

The huntaway-cross weighed only 14.8kg when it was seized on May 25.

Man convicted for neglecting dog Western Bay of Plenty dog owners are being reminded to make sure their animals’ needs are taken care of.

The call comes after a Te Puke man was fined $750 after his huntaway-cross was chained and starved on a rural property during a two year period.

Port of Tauranga worker Phillip Kahotea, 26, pleaded guilty to neglecting his family pet and admitted he only let the dog off the chain a couple of times and feed it sporadically.

The dog was seized by SPCA staff when inspector Jason Blair visited the rural property in Te Puke for the third time and

found the dog in an emaciated condition.

Jason had visited the property on two other occasions, once on April 10 and again on May 23, after receiving complaints from the public about the dog’s condition.

On these occasions, the dog was treated for worms and feed and Jason left a note for Kahotea to contact the SPCA. The offender failed to make contact with the SPCA and the dog was seized on May 25 when Jason returned to the property.

Kahotea was also sentenced to 75 hours community work and has to pay $132.89 in court costs and $153.26 to cover the costs of vet treatments.

BOP police stop location was set up a couple of weeks ago and had more than 1000 followers before it had the plug pulled on it.

There is still one page running, “Rotorua Police Stop Locations”, which had close to 300 people following it last week since it was set up on September 9.

Police say the pages are no different to motorists warning other drivers by flashing their lights but say it is disappointing to see people using Facebook to warn drink drivers.

National spokesperson Noreen Hegarty says people use all manner of means to communicate with each other and police do not have a desire to control the public’s Facebook content.

She says it’s a shame people find it necessary to warn others about police checking for drink drivers rather than warning about the irresponsibility and dangers of drinking and driving.

Mount Maunganui Police investigating a ‘disturbing’ indecent assault on a seven-year-old girl are looking at a list of suspects and reviewing a similar crime which happened in the same area 18 months ago.

Detective sergeant Darryl Brazier says they have a list of 25 people they are looking at after receiving information from members of the public and other police staff.

He says they have eliminated some of the names on the list and are continuing to investigate the incident.

Police say a man entered the girl’s bedroom where she was sleeping with her younger sister and indecently assaulted her overnight on September 4-5.

The man is described as a big person, in his 30s and Maori.

He had hair spiked up in the middle and short everywhere else, with earrings in his left ear.

The man is described as wearing a blue jacket with white stripes and knee high shorts with a Maori design down both sides.

He also had black running shoes.

Police say the girl is bearing up well given what has happened to her.

Darryl says as part of the investigation they are looking into a case which happened in the same area less than two years ago.

“We are looking at a case which happened 18 months ago involving a home invasion and an indecent assault on a teenage girl.”

He says they are looking at this because the crime happened less than 200m away from the Oceanview Road incident.

“It happened in March 2011 and had a similar method of operation.

“We believe someone out there knows who this person is.”

Police believe the offender may be in the same area or live in the wider Western Bay of Plenty.

“Someone must have missed him in the middle of the night or noticed him acting differently when he came home.

“We would like to hear from anyone who has information that can help us solve this crime.”

Rare birds flock together at Otumoetai

Con O’Leary is thrilled with his albatross at the Otumoetai Golf Club.

Eagles, of the golfing variety, are rare scores indeed for the average hacker.

Very few golfers possess the length, skill and precision to make a two under score on any one hole, so birdies - which can also prove elusive – generally suffice for those dreaming of great golfing deeds.

Rarer still is the albatross – a score of three under par on any one hole.

But don’t tell Con O’Leary of Otumoetai Golf Club any of that. He’ll likely smile a knowing smile, then proceed to tell you how he ticked off both fowls within two years and half a kilometre of each other.

The 61-year-old aced the shortened par four second on his home track on September 1 for the first recorded albatross in the club’s history.

The hole played shorter than normal at about 180 metres due to council opening up the drains in the catchment area, but that doesn’t bother Con. “That’s what it’s there for, it’s a catchment area that’s doing its job. People grizzle and moan about it but it is a catchment area for the flooding.

“It was a bit short, they shifted the hole a little bit but it was still a par four.

“Still, it’s never been done before, so I’ll take it.”

The shot was made with a five wood due to a following breeze, and Con says it travelled dead straight before falling into the hole.

At first he thought the ball has gone through the green, but was delighted to find it nestled in the bottom of the cup.

Unfortunately Con, who eagled the club’s sixth hole about two years ago, was playing match play as part of club champs at the time – meaning his miraculous shot was worth just one hole in a match he went on to lose 3-2.

Golfing tradition dictated he ‘put a couple of hundred dollars on the bar’ afterwards, in return for his lucky ball being mounted and presented to him.

Con says Otumoetai is a ‘good little course’ and a friendly club and can’t wait for twilight golf to start, and for the hard fairways of summer to replace the rather lush, slow ones of winter. By Ben Guild

Cooking with Cook – a Captain’s menu trade. The journey ended in his demise in Hawaii after attempting to kidnap a chief in the midst of thousands of warriors, to punish them for the ‘trivial’ matter of a stolen dinghy.

Peter, who has cooked in Michelin star restaurants abroad, will regale crowds at the Tauranga Home & Leisure Expo with stories of Cook’s travels to New Zealand, with an emphasis

on nutrition.

The shows will alternate with the House of Travel seminars on the weekend, but will also be held on Friday, September 21.

The first, at about 10.15am, will focus on Cook’s early life in Yorkshire, where the poor only ate meat once a week after attending compulsory church services.

The second, from 12.15pm, will see Peter make corned beef, a

quick pickled cabbage and a meat broth - in a nod to the salted beef and sauerkraut Cook insist his crew consume to stave off scurvy.

The third show, from about 2.15pm, will feature a kumara salad and snapper dish, while the final show at 3.15pm will show Peter making a fruit tansy, and explaining the brewing techniques of Cook’s men.

You could be forgiven for thinking celebrity chef Peter Blakeway is the modern-day manifestation of one Captain James Cook.

The facts basically speak for themselves. Peter hails from the same small North Yorkshire town of Staithes as the famed adventurer; is a former navigator in the British Navy; has been writing a book about Cook from his tortured wife’s perspective for the last five years; and his grandmother even went to the modern day equivalent of the school Cook attended.

Then there’s the shared interest in food and the fact that Peter has a predilection for dressing up in stockings and wigs – as the front cover of this edition attests.

Speak with Peter though and you soon find his view on the man, who named (or renamed) a third of the world, is something less than complimentary and not in keeping with many

traditional historical accounts.

“He failed at everything he did and was manipulated in basically everything he ever did,” says Peter, before expanding about the missed transit of Venus and Cook’s inability to find the great southern landmass Terra Australis, which British boffins were sure existed as a counter-balance to the great land masses of the northern hemisphere.

Cook was picked for the expedition in the second-rate ex-coal ship Endeavour because he was good at charting maps, but also because the British were at war with Spain and couldn’t afford to lose good, strong men, says Peter, who argues a labourer’s son was considered expendable.

He concedes Cook was the first captain not to ever lose a man to scurvy, but also states the myths constructed around Cook – especially records sourced from the Navy – are inaccurate.

In the end, Peter says Cook was an egotistical, unhinged man, tricked with his own pride into embarking on a third journey, which was motivated for

AIMS growth limits

Accommodation providers and food outlets were the main winners off the field at last week’s NZCT AIMS Games - in what organisers describe as a great tournament.

The week-long intermediate-age sports tournament attracted more than 6000 visitors to the city, but not all businesses won a share of the prized visitor purse.

Motel Association president Gail Fagan says it had been a very busy week with most motels in the Tauranga area full – in what she hopes is the beginning of a better season.

“It’s always good to have your motels full - especially after the poor year most places have had.”

Downtown Tauranga manager Kirby Weis says it was great to see the city buzzing with visitors, but the main beneficiaries were the accommodation and food sectors.

Kirby says AIMS was ‘wonderful for the city’, but with everyone focused on the sports, they were not spending a lot of time shopping.

“We didn’t see a huge increase in spending just because of the AIMS Games – it was a little bit busier than normal, but that could have been partly due to the better weather.”

In Mount Maunganui there had been more people on the street, but Mount Mainstreet manager Leanne Brown has not spoken to enough business owners to know if they were busier.

McDonald’s Mount Maunganui franchise owner John Warder wants to see more events like AIMS Games held in Tauranga to help show off the Western Bay to visitors.

“I’d love to see AIMS continue to grow and more events like this. It’s great for the whole community and shows the visitors what a great place we have here.”

John says his Maunganui restaurant, which was close to a lot of tournament action at Blake Park, had “a nice little spike in business” over the week.

“It was a nice boost right in the middle of the quietest time of year.”

Mr G (aka Graham Hoete) and Honey with the painting of Spartacus.

In April Graham, known as Mr G, confirmed a deal to spray paint a portrait for the American rapper and his wife of their bulldog Spartacus.

He transported the painting with him and will present it to them some time during a twoweek venture to New York.

The Papamoa resident says he has been chipping away at the painting for about three weeks and is looking forward to presenting it to the stars.

“Coco is really looking forward to it.

“It’s going to be cool.”

Mr G, who recently completed a world first in New Zealand – the Dogathon 100, says he completed the project because of his love for dogs and he won’t stop at spray painting 100 dog portraits in one country.

His ultimate goal is to paint a Dogathon of 100 dog portraits in 10 countries in the world.

“It’s something different. I am the only artist in the world that spray paints dogs.”

“I make a living off it as well.

“It just creates a lot of opportunities and possibilities really for myself.

“It’s a passion, it’s what I love to do.”

Mr G says he and his wife have had trouble having a baby of their own, so their pet bulldog Honey is treated as their child.

“She’s our big girl.”

Mr G contacted Ice T through his website and heard back from his manager confirming their interest within an hour.

The portrait of Spartacus is not Mr G’s first portrait for celebrity stars.

He has also painted a portrait for the Dog Whisperer - Caesar Millan – and has continuing ambitions.

“What I am wanting to do is grab some in road to get into the celebrity market.”

Mr G first began his Dogathon journey two years ago, when he decided to spray paint 100 dog portraits throughout New Zealand to raise money for the SPCA. Having completed the New Zealand Dogathon, Mr G started the Australian Dogathon in July and is making progress regardless of his big break in America.

“I am at number two at the moment.”

Mr G will be keeping a web through his Facebook, updating pictures of his journey during the two-week trip.

AIMS medal winners Tauranga Intermediate School dominated the AIMS Games leader board winning more than double the medals of second place school, Heaton Intermediate.

Tauranga’s tally of 61 medals and four cups was given a major boost in the ‘gym sport’ section, where pupils won 36 medals. Second place went to Heaton Intermediate of Christchurch (two cups and 25 medals), while Bucklands Beach Intermediate of Auckland was placed third overall (two cups and 14 medals). Bucklands Beach also won the Teammates Cup as the school that showed excellence in presentation, punctuality, competition and respect, in all its conduct. Other Western Bay schools to win medals were: Otumoetai Intermediate (14 medals), Aquinas College (seven), Bethlehem College (seven), Te Puke Intermediate (seven), Mt Maunganui Intermediate (five), Papamoa College (three), Pongakawa College (three) and Tahatai Coast (one).

AIMS off-field winners

The continuing growth of the NZCT AIMS Games has the organisers of the annual intermediate-age sports competition considering limiting entries in three codes next year.

Tournament director Vicki Semple was “absolutely thrilled” with the success of the ninth tournament, which was held in the city last week, but says limited facilities mean hockey teams will be capped, while swimming and football were also being looked at.

Vicki is expecting numbers to keep growing next year after many schools promised they will be back with more pupils competing: “We’re certainly not expecting the numbers to fall”.

She says “two or three” hockey teams were turned away this year to limit the boys and girls competitions to 24 teams each.

“We are already running the competition between Tauranga Hockey (Blake Park) and Bethlehem College, and we just can’t take any more.”

This year, the event attracted 6000 pupils from 166 schools in what Vicki describes as the biggest and brightest tournament yet, saying the inspiring opening, with Olympians Mahe Drysdale and Sarah Walker, set the tone to push the event “to a whole new level”.

“The spirit at each code venue has been welcoming, positive and competitive, with all 16 sports” superbly organised and run to a very high standard. The talent and sportsmanship blows me away.”

Vicki says major growth in swimming and football numbers meant they were reaching capacity and may need to be restricted. She says plans are already underway for next year’s event with venues booked from September 15-20.

More Australian competitors are expected, with both Australian schools competing for the first time this year promising to bring more pupils.

Pupils from Sydney Jewish school Moriah College will also be competing after teachers attended to assess if pupils could follow cultural practices and eat a kosher diet during the event.

Tournament Chairperson Brian Diver says the committee is “absolutely delighted with the event”.

10 Rena: 1001 containers retrieved from wreck

Rena salvage teams have reached a milestone in the recovery of containers with a total of 1001 containers now recovered from the wreck.

Environmental specialists Braemar Howells and Unimar report the total reached 1001 on Wednesday.

The Rena was carrying 1368 containers when it hit the Astrolabe Reef on October 5 last year.

Braemar also reports a total of 35

tonnes of debris has been collected from the seabed around the Rena wreck in the last week.

Woman fined for Te Puke fatal A Rangiuru woman involved in a fatal head-on collision that killed Te Puke father Shannon Rahiri last year has been fined for her part in the crash.

Bus dog attack charges denied

The Tauranga owner of the dog accused of attacking a school bus supervisor attempting to protect children on a bus in Poike is denying the charge.

Damien Te Manu Oliver, 25, appeared in Tauranga District Court today charged with being the owner of a dog that attacked a person causing injury and for owning an unregistered dog.

It is alleged Oliver’s American pitbull terrier-cross Haze attacked a 61-year-old Bayline coaches supervisor as he attempted to keep the dog off the school bus as it picked up children in Windermere on Monday, August 30.

The supervisor was called to the bus stop following reports of an aggressive dog attempting to get on the bus.

Oliver has been remanded at large and will next appear in court on October 10 for a judicial intervention hearing.

Iwi lose port dredging appeal Dredging in the Port of Tauranga’s shipping channel will go ahead after Ngati Ruahine hapu lost their appeal in the High Court this week.

The hapu’s appeal of the Environment Court’s previous decision to allow the port to deepen and widen its shipping channel was dismissed on Tuesday.

In his decision Judge Priestly stated he was satisfied with the decision reached by the Environment Court: “I discern no errors of law. Nor have counsel been able to point to matters in their submissions which have the status of errors in law.”

The decision paves the way for bigger container ships to access the port. Ships currently using the port can carry up to 4000 TEUs – 20ft equivalent container capacity – while dredging the port will allow ships up to 5500 to access the port. The first stage is set to begin next year.

Man admits to stealing church cheques and forging signature of vicar An unemployed Tauranga man has admitted to stealing cash and cheques belonging to St John’s Anglican Church and forging the vicar’s signature to cash a cheque.

Gabriel Darren Te Huia, 39, pleaded guilty to one charge of

using a document to obtain a pecuniary advantage and two charges of theft when he appeared in Tauranga District Court.

Te Huia began working as a cleaner at the Otumoetai Church in September 2011. While employed

he stole $1712 in donations and childcare payments, as well as $231 from a cash box and forged and cashed a cheque from the church’s cheque book for $1280. Te Huia is due to reappear for sentencing on October 23.

Friends mourn loving, humble Dame

Tauranga community is mourning the loss of a former principal of Tauranga Girls’ College whose friends describe her as a humble, loving and selfless woman.

Dame Mary Josephine Drayton, also known as Joy, died in Tauranga Hospital on Friday at the age of 96.

Joy was a big part of the Tauranga community since moving to the township in 1959 to begin her role as the principal of Tauranga Girls’ College where she remained until 1981.

In her time as principal, Joy introduced the nation’s

first Maori language studies class and saw the school’s role more than double.

Waterfront with wow

Three out of 27 ain’t bad Aquinas College’s Alice McFall and Nelson teammate Joel MacManus have finished third in the Fedex ITC Asia Pacific Regional final in Singapore.

The pair was the best performed of the three New Zealand hopes, and received a large novelty cheque worth $US2000 for their efforts.

The youngsters were tasked with developing a market entry strategy for promoting a product or service that addresses major environmental issues in India. They chose a business which distributes free portable toilets

to low-income families before paying them for the human waste, which would then be used to manufacture eco-bricks.

A team from Singapore won with their idea to launch three eco-tourism resorts that provide a series of environmental conservation activities in India for tourists and companies.

Second place went to a team from Hong Kong, which proposed launching a paper recycling business that turns waste paper into wood products, such as cricket bats, pencils and furniture.

Luke Thompson, Antony Jeffares and Jo Thompson from Oh Mary will perform at the waterfront development opening on Sunday.

The first stage of work on the Tauranga waterfront is finished and it’s looking fabulous!

To celebrate, Tauranga City Council and Downtown Tauranga are hosting an extravaganza event this weekend, with fun and activities planned for the whole family.

Beginning at 2.30pm on Sunday, the opening ceremony will be followed by an afternoon and evening of activities and entertainment culminating with a fireworks spectacular, sponsored by Downer.

Olympic gold medallists Eric

Murray and Hamish Bond, who won gold at the London 2012 Olympics in the men’s rowing pairs, will be in the ANZ area for the afternoon to meet fans and sign autographs.

“Now we have a spectacular area that can cater for festivals and large and small events and help draw people into the city centre.”

Royalty absent from Hairy Maclary opening One of New Zealand greatest children’s book characters will miss out on having a royal in attendance when a statue of Dame Lynley Dodd’s iconic characters is unveiled later this year.

Creative Tauranga chief executive Tracey RudduckGudsell wrote to the Palace and British Cabinet inviting the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall to attend the opening as part of their 60th Jubilee tour of New Zealand in November.

Unfortunately, the royals are unable to attend the ceremony.

The idea arose after the duchess named ‘Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy’ as the book to pledge to children as a patron of the United Kingdom’s Book Trust organisation that provides books for children living in poverty.

Tracey says despite the royal visit not happening she is getting on with the project and says the unveiling of the Hairy Maclary statue is going to be fantastic for New Zealand.

Tauranga City Basketball director of development Rachel Gwerder, who has previously coached Breakers and Tall Blacks player Thomas Abercrombie in North Harbour, is thrilled with the numbers named to embark on the Basketball New Zealand Koru Tour, which she describes as a pathway through the

age group grades of the sport.

“We were very, very excited about it. It’s due to a lot of hard work from different coaches and players,” says Rachel, who points to the development programmes and coaching community as key reasons behind the youngsters’ success.

TECT Arena, with its ability to hold large tournaments, has been of massive benefit to the sport in the

Western Bay of Plenty, says Rachel.

About 70 miniball teams, comprising more than 500 primary school pupils, are currently registered with the association – a number which Rachel says has remained steady in recent years.

Bike race takes in best of Rotorua countryside Entries are now open for a new event which will take participants on a tour of the Rotorua surrounds.

The inaugural Cyclezone Tour of the Valleys will take place through the Waikite Valley, just south of Rotorua, on Sunday, October 7.

The event, which has been scheduled a month earlier to help cyclists test their fitness before the K2 on the Coromandel Peninsula and the 160km Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge, is being run by Cycling Rotorua Inc. and replaces the Rotorua to Ohope Funride.

Calls for New Zealand to become ‘colourblind’ A controversial race relations campaigner is trying to force a citizen’s initiated referendum on whether New Zealand should be a ‘colourblind state’, with government spending based on need, not race, and one general electoral roll only.

John Ansell, the controversial ad man behind the National Party’s very-nearly-successful ‘Iwi/Kiwi’ billboard campaign of 2005, believes tribal claims for water and wind will be the tipping point for New Zealanders to say ‘enough’ to ‘Griever Maori’.

John’s idea, under the banner ‘Colourblind New Zealand’, is to educate the public with a massive advertising campaign about ‘the twisting of our history’ called ‘Treatygate’, then have a ‘one vote/fix all’ referendum that reverses ‘all the distortions done by a generation of grievers and appeasers’.

“The Treaty grievance industry is like a giant squid. There’s no point having single-issue referenda on getting back the beaches or a Treaty-based constitution. No point lopping off the odd tentacle – you’ve got to kill the whole squid,” says John.

He says local body polls have shown the idea is likely to have about 80 per cent support throughout New Zealand.

“People can see the claims are getting out of hand – the tribal extortionists will be demanding sunlight and heat next,” says John.

“They’ll cite the legend of Maui slowing down the sun as proof that Maori invented daylight saving.

Then the Waitangi Tribunal will insist that Maori be awarded twenty per cent of the nation’s solar power.”

He describes the ‘Griever Maori elite’ as ‘the spoilt teenage brats of New Zealand society – rude, dishonest, intimidatory and with a grossly inflated sense of entitlement based on a totally one-eyed version of history’.

He says iwi leaders ‘aided and abetted by selfish politicians and ideologically-driven academics’ have for forty years been ‘perpetrating a massive historical fraud which has grossly misrepresented our pioneering forebears’.

“They use Hitler’s Big Lie principle – that if you’re going to lie, lie big. Thus you have Taranaki Maori describing Parihaka as a holocaust, when the death toll there was zero. Yet they blithely ignore the actual massacre of thousands in the same province during the intertribal wars of the 1830s, the massacres of numerous settler families in the 1860s, and the genocide committed by Taranaki tribes against the Moriori.”

He says accusations that he is a racist are ‘a trick by actual racists like Hone Harawira and Willie Jackson to stop concerned citizens speaking out’.

“In the US you’re a racist if you put on a white hood and want to lynch Black people. In New Zealand you’re a racist if you want racial equality. New Zealanders need to stand up for their country before it becomes Apartheid Aotearoa.”

Have some respect

Maori were ‘a violently dysfunctional society’ before the British arrived and outlawed cannibalism and slavery, and it’s hardly surprising that aspects of that dysfunctionality still linger, says John.

“It’s a bit rich to blame the British for moral failings that were well entrenched before they got here.”

He says he wants the best for Maori. He believes ‘achiever Maori’ should stand up quickly to the ‘grievers’ and ‘re-establish the respect Maori enjoyed when they had great leaders like Ngata, Pomare, Carroll and Buck – men who told the truth’.

John says the referendum would be timed to coincide with the 2014 election, and says a one-issue political party has also been mooted.

“We’ll do whatever it takes to persuade our prime minister to run our country as a democracy.”

Former Tauranga MP Bob Clarkson, among others who regularly contribute to the letters pages of this publication, raised the prospect of The Weekend Sun running a feature on controversial former Act and National parties associate John Ansell’s campaign to end preferential rights for Maori in New Zealand. Below, basically verbatim, John explains to Sun assistant editor Ben Guild some of the background between himself and Bob. The Sun contacted Labour Party associate spokesperson on Maori Affairs, Nanaia Mahuta, for her thoughts on the campaign, but did not receive a response this week.

Everybody’s last chance Growing the environment now that would be smart I have had a number of phone calls from irate residents angry over their rates bills, but a similar number are still calling over the stormwater issues.

The rates were decided long ago, and the stormwater issues need money which the council doesn’t have.

The third problem, and our last chance to have our say and change the council, is to lodge an appeal or objection to council’s proposed representation review before October 8.

Most believe our problems with council stem from the council’s unwillingness to allow open communication with the ratepayers. This has been common with other districts, but most other councils are now moving away from a centralised control model and are delegating more management functions to local centres or communities of interest. Council’s representation strategy is to avoid this model like a plague. You can read their plan and try to follow their logic in the ‘Review of Representation Arrangements for the 2013 Local Elections’ notice which is available on Council’s home page - www. westernbay.govt.nz Only one person out of 90 approved the original plan; many said, or implied, they didn’t understand what council was suggesting and rejected the initial plan. Others were a little more polite and tried to fill in the major gaps, like which groups in the community might the council be planning for and how

is the new structure supposed work. Council has ignored the rejection and has written the missing parts to suit themselves. Even in the notice, they have had to admit that they still don’t know who they are talking about, or how the new system will accommodate any useful communication links between the council and the public.

Whether you are appealing as a previous submitter or just objecting to the final plan, your message has to be the same. The whole representation process must start again. The people have to understand what council is talking about and have their chance to contribute to the review. If we do nothing, we are voting for business as usual with the council staying behind closed doors, and we won’t get another chance for six years.

The council’s final version of their representation review has been constructed by ignoring the public submissions, and the final structure, which should be allowing local management functions, is nonexistent. SmartGrowth is a planning tool that delivers funding efficiencies, coordination between councils, and infrastructure development. SmartGrowth’s own assessment is that it is failing to deliver effective environmen-

tal management.

The first problem is the name.

SmartGrowth is seen (and used) as a mechanism to promote and manage growth. Calling it SmartPlan would have emphasised clever planning rather than growth as an objective.

The second problem is emphasis.

Economy and infrastructure first, heritage and Treaty second, safe and clean environment last.

The third problem is bias. SmartGrowth consults regularly with Priority One, but has no equivalent consultancy with environmental advocates.

We need smart growth, but not as a smokescreen for business-as-usual.

It’s the putting right that counts It was good to read in Rogers Rabbits editorial last week that the Weekend Sun’s approach to news is as accurate, fair, honest and credible, as they can manage. For this reason, I want to put right some comments made by Councillor Faulkner in his column last week about the Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s Infrastructure Fund.

Of the $200 million Regional Council infrastructure fund created by the issue of the Perpetual Preference shares, over $50 million has been spent or committed to regional infrastructure to date. Some of this has been through direct funding grants to benefit local authorities – including $1.8 million committed to Tauranga City Council for the Judea Link, $2.21 million for the Little Waihi/Maketu sewerage scheme, $1.75 million for eastern Bay State Highway route security, and $1.96 million for the Lake Rotoiti sewerage scheme. A significant portion has been allocated as loan funding to river schemes across the region, and most of the rest has been allocated to qualifying project expenditure and Council infrastructure - including land purchase for the Onekawa regional park.

The current Expression of Interest (EOI) round for the $38 million set aside from the fund in

the Regional Council’s Ten Year Plan is seeking indications of infrastructure proposals for consideration through a contestable process.

Council has indicated it will fund projects through a direct grant, a loan, as part of an equity investment – or a mixture of all three. The EOI is designed to help people understand the fund, support them in developing their applications when the official application process opens in November, and to give the Council some idea of the scope, range and size of the requests for funding coming through.

Nothing is surer; there will be some very hard decisions to make between many worthy projects – but the important thing is the Regional Council wants to use its fund to provide the greatest benefit to the region.

Memories of one of Sir Bob’s earlier visits Tee-time for the Charles Tour’s Carrus Open at the Tauranga Golf Club is less than a week away on a track that has seen its fair share of drama through the years.

Some of that drama occurred at the 1981 NZPGA Championships; involving the man who lends his name to the national tour, who is also New Zealand’s best ever golfer and the first lefthander to ever win a major – Sir Bob Charles.

D.G.S. Mowat’s unpublished history of the tournament, in Tauranga City Library records, says a superb field of

144 – including 47 players from Australia and 22 players from the United States - was drawn to the event due to coinciding with the NZ Open in late-November in Titirangi.

The top prize was $9000 and the field came out firing in the pro-am, with 25 players shooting 68 or better.

New Zealand’s John Reid was seven strokes off the first round pace set by Australian Terry Hulls sevenunder 63, but drove away much the richer in a brand new Honda Civic valued at $13,200 after acing the 14th.

It was the second of a staggering four hole-in-ones during the week, after Barry Vivian recorded the same score on “The Knoll” the previous day, a feat replicated

by Charles to take the lead on the 5th on Saturday, followed in short order, by an ominous Terry Gale bomb on the 9th.

Charles sat one stroke off the pace set by Australian

Ted Ball and Kiwi John Lister at 10 under, then powered ahead on the third day with a 65 to take a three shot lead on Sunday.

Simon Owen, Jack Newton and Wayne Grady, all missed the cut - in a testament to the strength of the field.

A cold putter and tough conditions combined to leave Charles with a two stroke lead, with two holes to play, but successive bogeys on 17 and 18 meant a play-off with Gale, who had surely given up hope in the clubhouse awaiting the big Kiwi’s procession up the final sloped fairway.

Charles then inexplicably three jacked the 16th on the first play-off hole, to hand the title to Gale on a day when only seven players shot under par.

As of late Wednesday, a total of 118 players had registered for the 2012 tournament, including professional Mark Brown and local hopes Jared Pender and Omanu pro Andrew Gurney.

Perfect shot to The Knoll The par four 12th hole, known as ‘The Knoll’, is one of the signature holes at Tauranga Golf Club.

On paper, it appears rather innocuous. At 124 metres it is the shortest par 3 on the course, and is only protected by one small bunker some distance from the front of the green.

But many professionals and amateurs at next week’s Carrus Open, along with juniors, vets and almost everyone in between who’ve come across the short shot to an elevated green - which slopes off in every direction towards what seems like different parts of hell – will attest to its difficulty, especially when the wind is blowing.

The ace, along with four solid rounds of golf in tough conditions, was good enough for third place with a combined score of 319 – six strokes adrift of second place finisher Harry Hillier of Te Puke, and a staggering 24 stokes shy of Chisnallwood Intermediate’s Ryoga Mimura, who finished with rounds of 71, 80, 73 and 71 for a total score of 295.

Mikayla Bell of Bay of Plenty Golf praised the level of play and was thrilled with Harry and Shaun’s play, as well as the fact that Mount Maunganui Intermediate and Tauranga Intermediate came second and third respectively.

The introductory have-a-go day is being held as part of Sport Bay of Plenty’s Play in the Bay programme intended to introduce people to a range of activities and sports. The theme for September is ‘Activate’, with a range of activities offered to encourage people to get active.

Western Bay of Plenty fishing opportunities have remained few but some have seized those rare weather window opportunities and found the fishing then ‘not too bad’ or even ‘pretty good’.

Perhaps the best, longest, most popular, and most productive weather windows recently occurred Thursday and Friday last week.

Garth Le Lievre (Deepstar) found fishing in the Early Middle Ground last Thursday and Friday needed considerable patience and accepting the necessity of poking around. They did, and landed sufficient tarakihi from spots varying from ‘good enough’ to ‘pretty good’.

Brett Keller (Manutere) was fishing round Motiti last Thursday and Friday. They found inside Motiti slow, but outside better. Many anglers got close to their tarakihi limit. They also landed a lot of small fish, a few snapper, and a 16kg kingfish.

Russ Hawkins (Fat Boy) earlier than most was fishing in three different areas round Motiti last Wednesday.

They landed 40 tarakihi, some snapper, and a snake eel. It was very hard work in the 20 knot wind, the boat swinging around, and a barracouta couple attacking.

At Pukehina last Thursday and Friday kontiki fishers were getting some good size and quality snapper.

Fishers in canoes/kayaks/tinnies in close to the Matakana, Papamoa and Pukehina beaches at the end of last week were getting good snapper returns.

Greerton writer forever young For Greerton writer Val Bird there is nothing more satisfying than hearing readers tell her she was writing about them.

“I just love being able to make contact with a child – just to have a child come up to you and tell you that you’ve been writing about their family. That’s when you know you’re in their world.”

The author of the Ozzie Kingsford fivebook series has mastered the art of writing from a child’s perspective – saying it’s crucial to be writing from a ‘child’s view’ to hook them in.

“It’s about looking through your children’s eyes. It’s about keeping [books] light and funny so they are good to read, and never looking down on children.”

Val, who shifted from Whakatane at the start of the year to be closer to family, rates her 10 grandchildren as an important part of her success, saying conversations with them about their parents annoying habits would often have her laughing and inspire another twist in the story.

While she has developed a leading reputation as a children’s author – encouraging a lot of young boys into their first chapter book with her Ozzie books - her first foray into writing 12 years ago resulted in the only adult title she has written - ‘Wednesday’s Child’, about life from her intellectually handicapped brother’s perspective.

“I just had something I had to

do. I had no clue about writing to begin with, but I needed to get his story out.”

Val was unhappy with the way her brother had been treated in ‘the system’ and wanted to share the story.

To her delight the book has been used to teach people who care for the disabled.

Last year Val put out a book on Moko the dolphin, and has just published her fourth book this year with ‘Ghost’ released just this month -a pre-teen book aimed at girls. Ghost follows three children’s E-books through Oceanbooks.co.nz in her new Dusty Hayes series, in a similar vein to her Ozzie series.

Ghost is her first book written from a girl’s perspective and sees 13-year Emma Smallbone, her friend Kitty and cat Swiper, unearthing history in a fun and occasionally scary story, to solve a puzzle set by a ghost she calls The Silver Lady.

Knitting blankets for Eastern Europe

Only weeks after sending off more than 500 hand-knitted blankets to needy families in Eastern Europe the call is going out for more donated wool.

Operation Cover Up coordinator Nelda McCann says the group of keen Tauranga knitters has done a wonderful job, producing 975kg in knitted items which have just been sent off to be distributed by charity Mission Without Borders.

“We’re already knitting for next year’s shipment and would be grateful for any donations of wool people have to spare.”

This year the group, together with knitters from Whakatane, sent off six and a half pressed wool bales of knitted items weighing 1150kg, including more than 500 blankets, 340 jersey, 416 hats, 152 scarves, 270 pairs of socks and 36 pairs of gloves.

Festival blossoms in Greerton The Cherry blossoms are out in Greerton and plans are being finalised for shopping strip’s annual spring festival next Saturday.

Greerton Village Mainstreet manager Victoria Thomas says everything is shaping up for a “fantastic festival”.

The festival is building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, with roaming street performers and a range of carnival rides operating at the Greerton Village.

“It’s going to be much more of a carnival

atmosphere – we’ve got the biggest slide you can get coming and lots of other fun for the kids.”

She says it will feel like the circus has come to Greerton’s streets – with performers ranging from jugglers, clowns, mime artists, and stilt-walkers, to the highly regarded Waihi troupe – which has developed a reputation as leaders in a wide range of street performance.

Greerton Village square will be the centre of a lot of action, with performances by Tauranga Samba and music by Addictive DJs entertaining the public. Tauranga

Samba will also put on a workshop for people wanting to have a play on the drums.

“We want the festival to become a real feature on the local calendar which people look forward to. It’s going to be a really fun day out and we are hoping to attract thousands and thousands of people.

“Aside from the beautiful blazing cherry blossoms there will be lots for the whole family to enjoy.”

Victoria is hoping for a repeat of the “awesome weather” they had for last year’s festival.

Computer clubhouse for Merivale Young people in Merivale will get the opportunity to build their creative computing skills with plans to establish Tauranga’s first computer clubhouse programme in the area.

Merivale Community Centre manager Graham Cameron hopes to have the after-school programme up and running in the next few months, after learning about the benefits of the international programme teaching young people how to express themselves creatively with new technologies.

“It has its own curriculum around challenging kids to extend themselves and learn new skills – with projects like designing a robot or an app, video editing, making their own animations or producing music.

“It’s amazing and the kids are really excited about it.”

The clubhouse programme focusses on teaching those aged 10-18, from low income communities, to develop their computing skills by working on projects based on their own interests with the support of adult mentors.

Since the first clubhouse began in Boston in 1993, programmes have been set up in more than 200 loca-

tions, including at centres in Manukau, Hamilton, Whakatane, Wanganui and Wellington.

“I’m really excited about it because it’s going to create great opportunities for the kids.”

Merivale School principal Jan Tinetti is excited to host the programme and says it’s a great way to help the pupils extend themselves. She believes lots of children will want to get involved.

“I can see them really loving it. The pupils absolutely love the creative side of IT.” Graham is keen to hear from adults who can help as mentors on the programme, teaching various creative computer technologies. Numbers are limited to less than 15 pupils initially, but may be increased in the future, he says.

Keep off the grass Flo and I are country girls at heart, but we spend a lot of our time together at the office while the bosses are pretending to work. But every day we get out to romp in the green, green grass.

The days have their highs and lows.

One particular day this week, was a very special ‘high’ for Flo.

The best part of the day is going out for runs. Every day, uncle takes us out for an hour or so, to charge around in the wilds. Then in the afternoons we have another outing, sometimes to Sulphur Point for a run and swim in the harbour or maybe for a short burst around the redoubt and the rose gardens.

There’s often a few derelict citizens hanging around up there, usually partaking of a variety of substances and refreshments.

This week Flo and I were fetching sticks and things when a particular picnic ‘on the grass’ (speaking figuratively here) caught her attention.

Being a typical Labrador, she helped herself to a tasty little cookie that had been left in a handy position. “Hey man, your mutt has munched my hash cake,� said a voice from the haze.

The cookie had some special herbal medicinal properties and there was one very unhappy stoner missing a special part of his afternoon picnic on the grass.

We made a discreet exit from the park, leaving the customer in a dazed state of agitation.

Back in our yard, I was quite concerned about the episode but Flo was looking more relaxed by the minute. There were some moments of paranoia. “Ady, did you hear that?

Sounded like a cat. Maybe a whole gang of cats. A whole gang of angry cats who want their dope back.�

That passed. Within half an hour she was getting quite vocal, singing a drawling

kind of happy howl. Dog talk doesn’t make much sense at the best of times, but this carry on was something special. Her back legs seemed to have a separate agenda to her front half.

There was a fair bit of aimless loping going on, and I ignored her attempts to have a game with the rope, which she called ‘chasing the hemp’.

The boss was quite concerned and googled a few subjects to check the danger to dogs of substance abuse. Which, if you believe the stories on the net, are quite major. It seems the effect of weed on dogs is much more severe than it is on humans.

By this stage Flo was having bladder control issues, at which time the boss was considering calling the Mobile Vet. The Labrador appetite however was not diminished and she demanded an early dinner.

After a good feed, Flo seemed to settle and eventually fell into a very sound sleep in the bean bag, listening to some vintage Bob Marley.

She woke occasionally during

I got stoned and I missed it. the evening, notably during “Border Control� and the programme when Ted, the drug sniffer, was doing his thing on TV1.

She was pretty unsettled all night and made quite a few trips to the lawn. She seems to have recovered fully by the morning, but we’re keeping a close eye on her, especially in the park.

We figured the amounts ingested were small, unlike the stories on the interweb about dogs eating entire stashes. That could be quite tragic.

45 years in the fire service

When Tauranga firefighter Garry Houlahan began his career in the New Zealand fire service he never imagined that he would still be putting out fires when he turned 50-years-old – but this week he celebrated 45 years in the service.

Garry, 66, started at the Rotorua fire service on September 12, 1967, where he was on duty every second night working 84 hour shifts. “I lived on that fire station,” says Garry. “It was 24 on, 24 off, 24 on and 24 off. I was keen as mustard in those days.”

While Garry has plans to retire next year, he says the job has been very rewarding.

“I get a lot of job satisfaction out of it.”

Garry clearly remembers the night of the February 1973 Parnell fumes incident - known to the fire service as the ‘Parnell Fumes’ emergency.

About 6000 residents of the Auckland suburb were evacuated from their homes after a number of leaking steel drums, containing Merphon organophosphate cotton defoliant, were found.

During the emergency a total of 41 fire-

fighters were taken to Auckland hospital after inhaling fumes and suffering burns from the caustic soda that is used to neutralise the defoliant.

Throughout the years, Garry was offered a higher position but he declined saying he was happy where he was.

He says he has had a very enjoyable and rewarding career. “The fire service is just a big family. This is my other family.”

Community heart transplant: Oropi Hall Plans for a major $1.8 million redevelopment of the 59-year old Oropi Memorial Hall will be another step closer within the next week when a resource consent application is lodged.

Hall committee chairman Mark Dean says the hall has reached its use-by date.

Work began 18 months ago looking into redeveloping it to cater for the growing community’s needs.

“It is being used to its capacity already, and with the ongoing growth in the district

we see a real opportunity to enhance what we’ve got, and make it a real centre of the community.” The hall is currently used for a playgroup and hosts regular recreation groups, but limited space means it can only host one activity at a time.

After consultation with the community and school, and discussions with Western Bay District councillors, the hall committee has settled on a plan to incorporate most of the current hall into an enlarged centre, making the hall more user-friendly by reducing the space between the stage and seating. The hall will be able to accommodate larger numbers by opening bi-folding doors into an adjoining supper room.

Other major changes proposed include: establishing two squash courts alongside, which users could access from 6am-10pm, a fitness gym – which could double as a multipurpose space for fitness classes, additions to the playgroup space, a meeting space, and covered exterior decking. Parking space would also be expanded.

Oropi School plans to use the hall for school meetings. The upgrade proposal also anticipates improvements to road safety, with a 250m footpath from the school to the hall.

Rail trail brings economic boost Riding the Hauraki Rail Trail is not only providing a fitness boost for cyclists but also a shot in the arm for the communities the trail passes through.

“We will need at least another 250 more beds in the districts in the

next three years to meet demand for accommodation and that will include everything from back packer and homestays through to top end accommodation,” says Hauraki District Council mayor John Tregidga.

“The number of cyclists on the trail during winter has been more than we expected and we anticipate even bigger numbers during the summer.”

So far 74 kilometres of the trail, including 54 bridges, have been constructed from Kopu to Waikino with a further section to be formed from Thames to Kopu.

It was Mark Barnett of Queenstown who carried out the economic feasibility study on the trail and he was so impressed with its potential, he tendered for and gained the contract for its management.

“I could see from the start what the potential was. Around 50 per cent of New Zealand’s population lives with a two hour drive of the cycle trail. The majority of people who ride the Otago Rail Trail are from the North Island, so there is obviously an appetite for it.

“Already this winter businesses along the route are reporting increases in turnover of up to 70

per cent in some cases. This will only grow in summer. We already have advance bookings for October, November and December.”

He predicts the majority of riders will be New Zealanders, with around 20 per cent overseas tourists. Cycling holidays are a worldwide trend and New Zealand is lagging behind other countries in making provision for them.

“Biking is a lifestyle thing. It’s about health and family and friends and doing something enjoyable in the outdoors.”

Once the Thames section is complete, the trail will be a three-

day, two-night experience along a grade 1 route which is ideal for bikers of all ages and levels of fitness, plus walkers, wheelchairs and pushchairs. However, as access to the trail has been designed to prevent horses and motorbikes using it, special arrangements need to be made for wheelchairs and recumbent bikes to gain access.

There’s no charge for using the trail but it is possible to book guided tours, hire bikes and arrange to be dropped off and picked up at any point along the route.

Green fingers’ group turns 65 When a small group of housewives in rural Papamoa began meeting to discuss their potted flowers and home vegetables, they never imagined nearly 100 people would be carrying on the tradition 65 years later.

The Papamoa Garden Circle celebrated its 65th birthday with a luncheon at the Papamoa Community Centre on Wednesday.

Secretary Carol Lobb, 68, joined the Circle a year ago and says it has come a long way from when it first began.

Now 91 members strong, Carol says it started off with “just a few wives in the area meeting at each other’s houses”.

“Those ladies were obviously more farmers wives, it was up the Papamoa area and of course it would have been mostly farm land at the time.”

Today, the Circle meets once

a month to discuss gardening and listen to guest speakers who talk on different aspects of gardening, from soils and pots to plants and design.

“Once a year we go on a bus trip to see gardens in other areas.”

The group is mostly made up of women, including two original members.

“I’d love to get the older members together myself and have a talk with them, I think it’d be quite interesting,” says Carol.

Psa anxiety, help on the way A series of discussion groups to help men cope with the anxiety and depression caused by the impact of the kiwifruit vine disease Psa-V on orchards and businesses will be held in the coming weeks.

Mike Chapman, CEO of Kiwifruit Vine Health says the Psa-V Men’s Discussion Groups, aim to show men how to help their families, friends and workers and how to help themselves.

The groups are being run by Simon Lowe, a registered social worker and trained counsellor with nearly 30 years’ experience.

Mike says Simon will run the sessions on an ‘open group’ basis. Meaning anyone can join at any point by just dropping in. Topics will include coping strategies, support mechanisms, what to look out for and how to deal with anxiety and depression.

Many growers with orchards infected with the vine disease, and those whose incomes rely on kiwifruit may be experiencing what famous psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross called the seven stages of grief, says Mike.

Recognising that’s what is happening is important but not everyone may experience the stages in the same order or intensity.

“The first stage is shock and denial where you deny the reality of what has happened to your orchard, your job, your income and your future.

“The second is pain and guilt as the shock wears off.

You may have guilty feelings or remorse over things you did or didn’t do. Life feels chaotic and scary during this phase.

“The third stage is anger and bargaining -where frustration gives way to anger. “Why me?” You may also try to bargain in vain with the powers that be for a way out of your despair.

“The fourth stage is depression, reflection and loneliness -where a long period of sad reflection will likely overtake you. During this time, you finally realize the true magnitude of your loss, and it depresses you. You may isolate yourself on purpose, reflect on things you did and focus on memories of the past. You may sense feelings of emptiness or despair.”

The Men’s Discussion Groups aim to help men understand the issues arising during those four stages. Then give them the tools to manage and work through the last three stages of grief says Mike.

“These are the upward turn where you start to adjust your life and it becomes a little calmer and more organised.

“Reconstruction and working through is where you become more functional, your mind starts working

again, and you will find yourself seeking realistic solutions to problems. Acceptance and hope is where you learn to accept and deal with the reality of your situation.”

When we come back, is it to ‘the same old, same old’ or do we now have new eyes to appreciate what we have here in our own country? I was away from New Zealand, on and off, for about 15 years and I have now been back for 10 years. I realise that, since I returned, I have never lost that feeling of gratitude I experience every day for this land – I gained ‘new eyes’ of deep appreciation for my country, its beauty, its culture and its people. I found I could now see it without the veil of familiarity or sometimes even disdain that can sometimes grow within us.

More-ish, money saving mussels In this country we are surrounded by water and mussels cling to the rocks all along the coastline.

This harvest from the sea is one of New Zealand’s favourite affordable seafoods available year round. You can get some at the supermarket for a few dollars. Or better still wait ‘til low tide and gather some yourself for free. Steam open on a beach fire or in a pot on the stove, add some garlic, fresh herbs, wine and cook until open - that’s about the stage when we usually eat them all.

New Zealand green lipped mussels are rich in omega 3 and its extract is known to relieve arthritis significantly and so is internationally known as a super-food and one of the two most eco-friendly seafoods

in the world.

When buying mussels, make sure there are no broken shells and discard any that don’t open properly when cooked. Also be aware of toxic algal blooms that sometimes prevent the gathering of shellfish.

The New Zealand mussel farming industry sets high standards and has grown 800 per cent since beginning in the 1970s. The whole industry is reliant on the wild spat gathered from seaweed from Ninety Mile Beach. The spat are distributed around the country to various mussel farms, where they are attached to ropes hung from rafts.

Seasonal variations in weather patterns

have meant some fluctuations in wild spat recovery from Ninety Mile Beach, but is generally more cost-effective and efficient than spawning mussels in a hatchery, and so the harvesting of wild spat is still crucial to the industry.

With efficient monitoring, and checks on bio-toxins New Zealand has become a world leader in mussel farming, so paying a few dollars for a feed of mussels is relatively risk-free. This week’s dish is a little harder than just eating the mussels once they are opened but once you taste the sauce with the texture of the mussels, it will make it all worthwhile.

Cheese stuffed crumbed mussels with saffron sauce Ingredients 2kg fresh mussels 2 glasses of white wine (sauvignon blanc or pinot gris) Two-three garlic gloves 100g ricotta 50g Parmesan shavings Chopped parsley Squeeze of lime juice Cracked black pepper Fine polenta/maize cornflour for dusting Medium size pinch of saffron threads 2 eggs ½ glass of milk 200g fresh breadcrumbs (grated frozen bread works well) 300ml fresh cream Method Soak the saffron threads in a splash or two of the wine, then have a taste yourself so as to get in harmony with the dish. Wash and clean the mussels. Remove any loose hairy bits then heat a heavy bottomed saucepan large enough to easily contain all the mussels .When pot is hot put all the mussels in then whatever is left of the white wine, the garlic, and a little water. Cover and shake a few times.

Steam the mussels until open and remove each one by one into a bowl of chilled water. Discard any that don’t open after 3-4 minutes cooking.

Keep reducing the liquid left in the pot. Add a little water so you have a total of half a litre. Add soaked saffron and reduce. Meanwhile, in a bowl combine the two cheeses, the parsley and the pepper. Add lime splash. Stir and the mix will thicken with the extra acid. Drain the mussels.

Remove any hard lip-like appendages or crabs from inside the mussel and fill with the cheese mixture. Seal closed into little pods. Dust with the cornflour or fine polenta and refrigerate.

Now check the sauce. It will be salty from the mussels, so add more water if required to balance out then reduce in the cream until thick.

Once the mussels have set in the fridge about half an hour, dip in beaten eggs and milk then in the freshly made breadcrumbs. Allow to set again until required. To serve, pan fry mussels until golden brown in a little oil and butter for flavour. Drain and serve on a little of the strong favoured mussel saffron sauce and balance with some wilted spinach - absolutely delicious.

Spring is at the markets The Tauranga Farmers’ Market’s Spring Festival is a stunning and seasonal occasion not to be missed this weekend.

Back for another spectacular year, Saturday’s festival is packed with activities and events celebrating the spring season, as well as high-standard, fresh and seasonal produce.

Local chef Stephen Wilson will share his passion for local, seasonal food with the audience through live cooking demonstrations, starting at 9am. With 26 years’ experience cooking in Paris, viewers will be in for a real treat as they taste Stephen’s creations, prepared right before their eyes. “These cooking demonstrations will be revolving throughout the morning so no-one misses out in regard to what time they come into the market,” says Tauranga Farmers’ Market manager Trixie Allen.

Stall holders will also mark the occasion with a spring-

time Scarecrow competition, where each stall holder will bring a scarecrow and two celebrity judges will decide which creation takes the top spot. Results will be out by 9.30am so viewers can check out the winners. “Rumour has it there’ll also be a few live scarecrows making an appearance,” says Trixie.

Singing sensations No License will serenade market-goers throughout the morning, with their busking music style suiting the market environment perfectly.

And if that wasn’t enough, a delicious range of spring foods will be on offer, including new season potatoes, beetroots, a selection of greens and fruits and more.

“As per usual, we have wonderful ready-made spring food creations coming in from our passionate chef stall holders.”

Community garden gets approval A new community garden will be created at Banks Hall Reserve in Mount Maunganui following approval by Tauranga City Council on Monday.

Claire Gourley’s online cooking classes are coming back for the school holidays.

Tauranga teenager Claire Gourley is to again front an online, school holiday cooking programme which has won acclaim from celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

The It’s My Turn to Cook Tonight Bosch School Holiday Programme, launch during the Easter holidays, was such a success it will run from October 2 to 4, says Claire’s Mum, food educator Glenda Gourley.

Inspiring children

“We had 130 families up and down the country taking part in April and the feedback we received was fantastic.

We have refined the programme and are looking forward to again inspiring children and their families to have fun cooking and learn valuable life skills,” says Glenda.

The Jamie Oliver Foundation has recognised, praised and blogged about the programme on its website and recently Claire and Glenda spoke about it at the Potatoes South Africa Conference.

Children who learn to be food savvy and cook for themselves are less likely to make consistently poor food choices and the best place to begin that process is at home, says Glenda.

Claire’s experiences in the kitchen have been part of the inspiration behind the online programme. The 18-year-old former Bethlehem College student who is studying law and

economics at university in Auckland, says she’s not a foodie but loves great tasting, simple to prepare, healthy food and that’s what the programme teaches children to make.

Children who register for the programme learn to cook at home while they hang out with other kids online.

It’s not just cooking, they slip in all sorts of other foodie things – like making food choices, reading labels, kitchen safety, plus they gain confidence both in the kitchen and on the computer. Activities and competitions encourage the children to share, contribute, be creative, create an occasion to eat together and do something nice for other people.

Bay tsunamis: Get going quickly Tsunamis are back on Council’s radar screen this week as elected members were presented with a draft version of “How to escape a tsunami” at a workshop.

As the facts get sorted from the fiction, it becomes apparent how vulnerable low-lying parts of Tauranga and the Mount really are, and it doesn’t need an earthquake or volcano to set off a tidal wave.

A landslide in the Kermadec Trench to the north east of the Bay of Plenty could set off a tsunami that would reach our coast in 50 minutes. As it takes the tsunami warning system around 60 minutes to assess the risk and issue an official warning, which would result in tsunami sirens being activated, it would be too late.

Estimates for an evacuation from the coastal strip are that it would take six hours.

There are only three ways out from the Mount/Papamoa and two of those rely on tsunami vulnerable bridges. We were shown a video of the Japan tsunami and cars were being washed away by the force of the water just up to the door sills.

Along the coastal strips, roads and sports fields are designed lower than surrounding

houses to act as storage ponds for stormwater, but of course, even a relatively low tidal wave would flood them, rendering escape and rescue routes unusable after the event.

Tall buildings are ‘safer’ than staying on the street, obviously, but not guaranteed. Sirens, of which there are 60 planned, may make the community feel good, but the reality is they will only form a small part of a ‘tsunami escape’ package.

Here’s a summary of an action plan in the event of a tsunami. Get going to high ground at the first indication of trouble. This could be natural indications – don’t wait for official warnings. Plan in advance where to go and how. Once you get to high ground stay there. Take a transistor radio and a survival grab bag. You should rely on yourself and not official instructions. In the Japan tsunami video you can see the people in the streets watching in disbelief as the debris laden wave rushes towards them sweeping all in its path.

A horror show

After the last big tsunami that hit our coast in the mid 1500’s the Maori who survived moved up into the hills as there is no evidence of them permanently living on

the lowlands after that date according to the archaeologists. So the advice on tsunami survival is being refined by the advisory group and will be communicated to you. Possibly the detail will be online, and meantime Council will pass a resolution banning all tsunami’s – just kidding.

A major celebration

This event could turn into a major celebration event for our city if handled correctly, and involvement from all three local councils is anticipated.

It’s a great war story involving ethics, great tactics on Maori side – the first recorded true guerrilla tactics apparently – compassion, morality and to top it off, the minority Maori defenders whumped the cream of British troops.

Unfortunately, the British didn’t reciprocate the code of conduct and returned en masse a few months later and slaughtered the Maori encamped at Te Ranga.

Council approved a community garden being established on the May Street reserve at the Mount. It will be for a term of three years. It was made clear that this is not necessarily a permanent arrangement as the future use of this valuable reserve unfolds. The ‘Let’s get growing’ community garden, down by the bridge to Matua by the railway line, is a big success, and May Street is to be run on similar lines.

Deliberations on the Freedom Camping Act rapidly ground to a halt as elected members got the other side of the story. Submitters had told us that the Freedom Camping Act allowed them to camp their motor homes almost anywhere unless specifically prohibited, whereas at the moment they were only allowed on specified places.

The Local Government Act, we were told, has an answer to the apparently poorly thought out Freedom Camping Act, so we left the issue to “lie on the table” while staff sort out the conflicting Acts. Don’t hold your breath on this one.

Most unfortunate outbursts

Tauranga Community Housing Trust, who is buying the Clark Street pensioner flats for $850,000, came along seeking a waiver on Development Contributions and consent fees.

TECT had tagged their promised $200,000 grant towards the purchase with a requirement that Council/ ratepayers subsidise these fees by 50per cent - about $45,000 worth. Murray Guy launched forth with a tirade against TECT, which Mayor Stuart Crosby labelled unprofessional.

It was a most unfortunate outburst from Murray and in my view uncalled for. Council will talk to TECT about these tags – Council has also done the same to organisations seeking Council and TECT financial support. We need to work together for the benefit of our community – not scrap!

My belief is that Council/elected members and TECT have a good working relationship. We made a grant of $45,000, rather than a waiver of fees, to avoid a precedent and to keep things transparent.

Negotiations continue

Route K negotiations continue. It’s a complex matter not being made easier because the road is actually there.

I noted that Wilson Parking that collects the tolls, have been paid $1.248million, which staff told me is for two years fee collection and administration.

A confidential workshop was held on the future of Council Controlled Organisations, including the aquatics network, the stadium/TECT Arena, and others.

Scouts visit Lost World A group of 12 Te Puna Scouts and their minders joined eight others from Auckland’s Beach Haven troop for an exhilarating weekend of adventure at Waitomo.

The main focus of the trip, organised with the cooperation of Waitomo Adventures Ltd, was to abseil into Lost World, a 100 metre ‘tomo’ near Waitomo, then to ascend back up the abseil rope.

That challenge is unique – only the two Scouts groups involved and one school in New Zealand are permitted to perform the ascension back up at Lost World.

Every one of the Scouts accomplished the task in good time, with the first female Scout back from the Te Puna group, Rhianne Overell, remarking: “It was an amazing experience and well worth all the training that was involved.”

Scout leader Andy Goodall was thrilled with the performances of everyone involved.

“The intention was that Scouts built personal confidence and endurance in a supportive team environment. The whole exercise was a great success, where the results speak for themselves.

The Scouts will always look back with pride at what they have achieved.”

Bay firm marks 75 years with community A Tauranga law firm is celebrating 75 years in the Bay by helping a small community group in Maketu create wetlands of international significance.

To mark their 75th birthday, Holland Beckett Lawyers wanted to give something back to the community which has supported them throughout the years.

On September 5, 10 volunteers from the resource management and environmental law team at Holland Beckett

paired with Julian Fitter, chairperson of the Maketu Ongatoro Wetlands Society, and Chris Ward from Coast Care, to establish the estimated 450 plantings they donated, sourced from Mangatawa nursery.

The Wetland Society’s vision is to establish a Ramsar Site on the lower Kaituna River, Maketu and Little Waihi harbours.

Law firm partner Lara Burkhardt says the Wetland Society was chosen because of its success in the 2011 Trust Power community awards.

Holland Beckett’s is pleased to be supporting the society’s ecological restoration work.

As a first step, the society is working on the ecological restoration of Maketu spit – a 3.5km sand spit protecting Maketu Harbour.

Their work has already discovered five new species of invertebrate and involves the protection and monitoring of the threatened New Zealand Dotterel colony nesting at the end of the spit.

Work has also begun clearing pampas and other invasive pest plants from Ford Road and Maketu

Road recently, in cooperation with Regional and District councils, and DOC. The work opened up a channel to allow the Maketu Wildlife Reserve to become tidal again and link up with the rest of Maketu Harbour after being enclosed for 30 years.

Julian says of Holland Beckett’s planting efforts, “We really appreciate help from commercial organisations like Holland Beckett.

Life insurance and wills crucial As September is wills month I thought I would explain why it is important to have a will and how it fits in with life insurance.

Your will is your instruction about what you want done with your assets - property, money - when you die and how you want your dependants to be looked after.

Otumoetai design a winner Tauranga Breast Cancer Support Service’s annual t-shirt design competition has closed and the winner is Barbara Baveystock of Otumoetai.

The design this year is all about strength, courage and, importantly, support as that is what Tauranga Breast Cancer Support Service is all about – supporting those diagnosed with breast cancer in the Bay through the rollercoaster ride of emotions, appointments, surgery and treatments.

“I just thought it was a nice way to say all the things that you think of when you hear about breast cancer,” says Barbara, mother of two.

The Proudly Pink Fashion Show launches Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the t-shirts will be available for $20 at the show on September 29.

Alternatively the t-shirts will be sold during other TBCSS events during October, like the Ocean Blue Beach Walk at Papamoa on October 14 and the ASB Fun Winner Barbara Baveystock shows off her winning design with Breast Cancer Support Service Tauranga coordinator Lea Lehndorf.

September cervical screening awareness month Women in the Bay of Plenty are being urged to use September as a reminder to have a cervical smear test.

Bay of Plenty regional co-ordinator Anneliese Luthard says investing a small amount of time in having regular cervical smears can reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer by 90 per cent.

She says cell changes to the cervix that can lead to cervical cancer are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) which is very common.

Anneliese says although changes in the cervix as a result of HPV occur very slowly and may clear spontaneously, sometimes the changes can progress to cancer.

“So having regular smears, every three years, means it is very likely abnormal cells will be found and treated long before they ever become cancer.”

Some women may now be offered an HPV test when they have their cervical smear.

The HPV test is usually taken at the same time as the cervical smear test, using the same sample of cells, so there is no need to have a second test.

The HPV test helps identify abnormalities in the cells of the cervix that may need to be followed up with a specialist.

A negative test result indicates the risk of developing cervical cancer in the next three to five years is extremely unlikely.

This can reduce the need for repeat smears for women whose smear tests have shown mild changes or who have had previous treatment.

A positive test result means a high-risk type of HPV has been found.

This means your nurse will discuss follow up options, so any cell changes can be treated early.

It’s important for women who have had the HPV vaccine to remember to have regular cervical smears.

The HPV vaccine does not protect against all the types of HPV that cause cervical cancer, so women who have been immunised must still have smears every three years.

Regular cervical smear tests are recommended from the age of 20 to 70 for women who have ever been sexually active.

“I hope all our local women book in for a smear if it’s due or overdue, and join the National Cervical Screening Programme if they haven’t already,” says Anneliese.

Pilot Bay boardwalk a wonderful opportunity I whole heartedly support the Pilot Bay Boardwalk project.

The Mauao base track and summit walks area are amongst the top short walks in New Zealand, and used by close to a million people per year. This is more than most of our national parks. However, as it stands access to Mauao via Pilot Bay requires navigating roadways, car parks and scruffy grass verge. Walkers must cross congested roads at their peril.

If we ever hope to manage congestion at Mauao and improve user experiences it will be through initiatives like this that improve access and encourage people to enjoy the Mauao experience from farther afield.

When it was first constructed the Main Beach Boardwalk (3m wide) was an instant success. The more recent link to the base track in front of the camp ground has

been a spectacular improvement.

Such improvements cater to people wanting to be “lead” through their Mauao experience and will not be to all people’s liking. In my opinion, the boardwalk theme could/ should eventually be extended to link Mauao (Mt Maunganui), Main Beach, Moturiki (Leisure Island), Hopukiore (Mt Drury) and Pilot Bay. It could even link through the Main Street to help the retailers.

The Pilot Bay Reserve is a

spectacular place to view Tauranga harbour, the shipping, harbour activities and for young families to play in safe waters. It gets huge usage but is worn and in constant need of upgrade. Cars dominate the foreshore at Salisbury wharf and around the boat ramp.

A boardwalk along Pilot Bay will provide an enduring solution to a number of problems (cars, maintenance, conflict) that are likely to continue to grow. In my opinion, is will dramatically improve the Mauao experience for visitors and locals alike. The capital investment, in light of the huge numbers using Mauao, is modest.

Although some residents on the Mall may have a different point of view I ask that they consider the wider public interest and not seek to scuttle a wonderful opportunity. (abridged) Richard Hart, Mount Mauganui..

Crime repayments

Recently a person was found guilty of a $17,000 benefit theft. At the conclusion of the court case this person was sentenced to 300 hours community work, and had begun repayments of the debt at $20 per week.

I have no intention of detailing here the research I have been engaged in.

However, I ask that the public take into consideration the enormous time that it will take to repay the amount stolen, the effect of interest, which should be taken into account, and the correlation of the hourly rate which this punishment applies to the community work sentence.

Wish I could receive an income for unskilled work hours at this rate. I wonder if you will reach the same conclusion as I have?

In respect to R Paterson’s letter (Sun 14 Sept) could I remind the correspondent that Mr Town was employed as the CEO, prior to my election to Council and that his remuneration package would have been agreed to at the time of his employment. Also KPI’s would also have been set along with the ability to review his performance, on a regular basis, with each councillor only having one vote out of 11.

Mr Paterson, I have written letters to the papers for over 20 years and contrary to what you may say or think I have no motive or agenda other than a keen desire to make sure that issues are actually discussed.

The reason why I am in particular concerned over the appointment of an interim, and also part-time CEO, is that the former CEO commenced a review of Council that requires to be completed as it could result in considerable saving to ratepayers.

What the albums also share is the remarkable range of talent that Dave charms onto them. That includes guitarists Mike Kirk, Derrin Richards, Trevor Braunias, Derek Jacombs, Harry Prastiti and Dave Berry. But there’s also Marion Arts, Robbie Laven (mandolin, fiddle, sometimes sax), Oscar Laven (sax, bassoon), bass players Nigel Masters and Dave Porter, John Michaelz, four-piece Ukulele group the Kokoladies, Grant Bullot’s harp, Sonia Bullot’s trumpet, and Ian Gilpin usually on drums. And that’s just on the latest four. It’s quite astounding really...

Having now listened to so much of Dave’s music I turn this week’s reviewing duties over to a fresh set of ears.

Oceania Storm, originally formed in 2006 as a church youth-group fundraiser, will be performing songs from their latest album – Sweet Music on Saturday September 22.

The album features one of the band’s three lead vocalists, 22-year-old Ripeka Murray’s debut single Nga Motu E Toru.

Originally a poem written by Ripeka’s mother,

Nga Motu E Toru is dedicated to the three islands in Tauranga.

“It speaks about me singing to our young generation.

“Don’t forget about where you come from.”

Ripeka wants to thank her whanau on Matakana Island for their support through her journey.

Playing together for about six years, the band has quietly developed their own brand of reggae sounds that highlight a combination of brass and live strings.

The band has had the privilege of playing alongside some of New Zealand’s well known bands and artists including, Katchafire, Stan Walker, Smashproof, P Money/ PNC, Tiki

Taane and Sweet Irie.

Oceania Storm co-manager Roberta Cooper says Sweet Music gives Aotearoa a breath of fresh reggae sounds to listen to.

“If you are looking for something different, something new, something sweet, this show is for you!”

Oceania Storm will be sharing the stage with Tauranga band 6TD and Hamilton band Soulfej.

There are, in my admittedly anecdotal calculations, three obvious contenders. Of the bands, Kokomo probably edge out Brilleaux through the sheer fact that they’ve been around longer, though Brilleaux’s ever-rising number of live albums means they’re catching fast. Kokomo are just about in double figures, more if you add in albums by the individual members.

Then there’s Marion Arts, who started recording well before either of those bands and, what with current outfit Bonjour Swing and forays into classical-style instrumentals, must have a dozen titles or so to her name.

But, I suspect topping the list would be someone who has never even made claims to being a professional musician, although he is a widelyrecognised local visual artist. I speak, of course, of Dave Roy. who for the past several years has been recording and releasing albums on an average of twice a year. I do believe there have been years when he’s made three.

They’re easy to spot. They always come to in asolve slim-line case, each has How inventive Dave-created cover art, and Sudoku! each is released under a different name.

- At a Certain Moment Dave Roy – talented and well respected Tauranga artist/sculptor, and also musician.

Nek Minnit – in essence the Kokomo line-up with a number of (very talented) ringers, being Mike Kirk (electric and slide guitars), Grahame Smith (pedalsteel) and Oscar Laven (bassoon and saxophone).

Mix together, stir vigorously, throw it all into the Boatshed production oven, and you’ve got yourself one hell of a tasty musical morsel.

At a Certain Moment, musically, is an exceptionally accomplished piece of work. It draws from a diverse range of genres (Brit folk to Hillbilly/Rockabilly, Country to Cabaret, spacious late night jazz to Gypsy Polka, and even a bit of music hall for a good old, just for laughs, knees up), but to my ear, is underpinned and tied together by that smooth Tex-Mex, Chicken Skin sound, most obviously aired on track 3 - surprise, surprise - ‘Ry Cooder Mood’. Each of the musicians brings individually, skill and expertise second to none, but not a prima donna to be found. They play as a group and as such create a magnificent whole, much greater than the sum of the parts.

The songs are penned and sung by Dave Roy. They strike me as being very personal (sometimes rueful, sometimes wry, but always honest), reminiscences and observations of a life lived thus far. They are stories (excepting track 2’s homage to the city and people of Christchurch), that though personal to Mr. Roy, are sympathetic and relevant to all of us (or at least all of us who have managed finally to come to the realisation that ‘well no, perhaps I’m not bulletproof after all’). I just wish that the intent and sentiment of the vignettes offered here had not been dulled at times by occasional instances of awkward and clichéd lyrics.

That aside, if you have an eclectic open-minded appetite for ‘grown up’, exceedingly well played and produced music, that has a quiet chuckle at itself, along with the listener, then At a Certain Moment will not fail to please.

MEN IN BLACK 3 Dir: Barry Sonnenfeld - Starring: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin Now I think about it, four suns seem a lot for this film. It’s really a three-sun film but gets the extra one simply for Jermaine Clement’s wonderful villain who, while not quite pipping Vincent D’Onofrio’s bugged-out turn in the original, brings a welcome spark to this late franchise reboot.

The second film fell into the void of lazy pointless sequels by opting to simply rerun the same plot for a second time – at least here the story, as Will Smith heads back in time to stop the death of a younger Tommy Lee Jones is new.

In case last month’s The Ledge didn’t inspire enough vertigo, we now have big budget thriller Man On A Ledge wherein Aussie action hunk Sam Worthington takes time off from battling Titans to hang out, well, guess where?

Since it’s revealed in the trailer I don’t think it’s giving too much away to say that he’s actually a diversion so his brother (Jamie Bell) can get some good old robbing done. Yes, it’s a heist thriller of sorts, similar in tone to Spike Lee’s Inside Man but, even if you thought that had some plot holes, little will prepare you for how absolutely illogically unbelievable this is. It looks good but you really – really - need to turn your brain off.

Lovers of England’s sixties and seventies horror phenomenon Hammer Films will no doubt be chuffed to see their full return with The Woman in Black . It also marks the first big postHarry Potter lead role for Daniel

That means that Tommy Lee is sadly relegated to the sidelines but some pitch perfect mimicry from Brolin as his younger self almost compensates, though his dynamic with Smith doesn’t quite have the same frisson. In fact that is where things almost come unstuck. Smith’s wise-guy persona seemed fresh and funky fifteen years ago but now often comes across as a rather contrived caricature.

That said, this does exactly what it says on the tin, and has laughs and bang up CGI effects. Which will do for this week.

Radcliffe. He plays a widowed lawyer sent to evaluate an old estate only to find obstructive locals and the sort of ominous warnings that only appear in Gothic horror flicks. It seems that the area’s children have been dying and villagers blame the titular woman or, at least, her ghost. The period setting (1910?) adds to the gloom and Radcliffe acquits himself well in a ghost story that revels in creepy atmospherics, disguising the slim nature of the plot.

Danny Trejo’s ex-Vietnam vet has lived an anonymous existence for forty years when an internet video of him beating up two punks on a bus brings celebrity status as Bad Ass . Then his best friend is murdered, and with the LA police disinterested, he leaps into the investigative fray. What with Trejo’s presence - and the title – this brings to mind the exploitation thrills of Machete but it’s actually a much straighter affair. By night, Dudley Coppard is just like any one of us, tinkering on projects and enjoying quiet times with family and friends.

But by day, this mild-mannered man transforms into Prickleman and wages war against uncomfortable lawns and grass verges throughout the Bay of Plenty.

Like Batman, he fashions his own gadgets. His specialised prickle eradicating equipment, built out of the parts of a mobility scooter, is quiet, runs on wheels instead of being carried on his back, can fit through a standard tennis court gate and allows him

to do more lawns per day than his competition.

Dudley, who has also invented ‘The Bandit’ dartboards, has been in the business for 25 years and guarantees his work which puts paid to all manner of weeds, including Onehunga weed, daises, broad leaved weeds and dandelions.

His chemicals are non-toxic to pets and people and he is the only person in the area specialising in prickle management alone – most likely due to the fact that he invented his own equipment.

A ¾ acre section takes him about 45 minutes at a cost of between $120-150, with extra rates for every half acre after that, while he will also spray smaller sections of any size.

Dudley says now is the perfect time to get your lawn sprayed as waiting until November will likely be too late to ensure a prickle-free environment for summer sport and barbecues.

Platinum selling country legend in town New Zealand country music legend Dennis Marsh will be in Tauranga on Sunday September 23 at Central Baptist Church.

The performance is part of Sunday Night @ Central, a monthly event at Central Baptist Church. Producer pastor Tom Frew says Dennis has been at the forefront of New Zealand’s country music scene for many years.

His albums have won gold and platinum status, not just in New Zealand but overseas.

He has performed in Australia, Norfolk

Island, the Phillippines, Singapore and Nashville. He is also the former New Zealand Country Music Awards Entertainer of the Year. He has just returned from a period of successful entertaining on international cruise lines. Dennis has previously appeared to capacity crowds at Sunday Night @ Central and several New Zealand tours.

Sunday Night @ Central has become the showcase for many of New Zealand’s upand-coming talents and has helped launch the careers of several overseas artists, with New Zealand and Australian promoters and talent scouts making it their opportunity

to see artists in live performances. Organist Len Hockly, who has appeared with Dennis before, will be part of the programme and many people enjoy singing along with his incredible music before the show, so it is good for people to attend early. Pastor Tom expects a full house, so people need to arrive early if they want a seat. Admission is free but an offering will be taken up to help defray expenses. Feasts of the Lord are all about timing

In Leviticus 23:1–2 the Lord instructs Moses to speak to the people of Israel about the appointed feasts of the Lord they were to observe as holy convocations.

The word ‘feast’ translated means ‘times’ in Hebrew – so God was setting in place ‘appointed times’ referring to appointments in history when God was foretelling His intervention. These were fixed times or seasons that God specifically set that His people are to be aware of, even as a bridal couple know the appointed time of their wedding.

The word that is translated ‘convocations’ in Hebrew means ‘rehearsal’.

Therefore, in setting aside these appointed times in the Hebrew calendar, God was setting in place rehearsals to be undertaken every year, at these set times. The purpose of the rehearsal was to prepare them for the day when God would come to fulfill what they were rehearsing!

It was only in doing the specific things, on the specific days as God instructed that they would know the real thing when God came to fulfill what He had specifically promised.

These dress rehearsals that continue today are the Feasts of the Lord celebrated in the spring feasts of Passover, Unleavened Bread, First Fruits and Pentecost and in the fall feasts of Trumpets,

the Day of Atonement and Tabernacles.

What’s important is that the spring feasts, which had been rehearsed for more than 1500 years in Israel, were fulfilled in the first coming of Jesus, as the Lamb of God, in perfect fulfillment of every detail that had been part of the spring feasts and on the exact days of these feasts.

He was the spotless Lamb slain on Passover, He was buried on Unleavened Bread and He rose again on the third day; on the day of First Fruits as the One who was the First Fruits.

And fifty days later, on the exact day that Pentecost had been rehearsed for 1500 years, the Holy Spirit was poured out in perfect fulfillment of all that had been rehearsed.

The fall feasts relate to the second coming of Christ and they will be fulfilled exactly as has been rehearsed and the events will occur on the exact days these feasts were set by God. We know the days, but not the years. We are in the time of these fall feasts now.

Willy Wonka, witches and a giant peach came to life at St Mary’s School on Friday when children and staff dressed in character for Roald Dahl Day.

Right: Bethlehem College’s concert band is the new proud owner of two timpani drums, which were made and shipped over from Japan. The 35 member concert band recently won silver at the National Concert Band Festival and the band is growing each year. They are performing with Redlands College, Brisbane on Tuesday at 6.30pm.

Left: Bob and Betty Bissett celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday. They met at a local dance in Glasgow, Scotland where he asked her to dance. Betty says that “he was a much better dancer than me” and that Scotsmen on the whole are not very romantic. Bob is always thoughtful though, she says.
