This week we sadly farewell Jean Rogers, a strong, selfless and exceptional mother, grandmother and friend. As the Rogers family mourn her passing, we’re letting someone else (Cliff Edge) rabbit on this week.

Now that’s what I call a headline. Sadly the story to back it up has yet to reach the office, but we live in hope and will go with it anyway as it has obviously served its purpose and got you this far.

But what do you expect these days from the media? Cynical people that you are, you won’t be surprised when the facts become inconvenient at best, and stories take a life of their own – except here in your favourite weekend read of course.

It’s actually quite fun to do “Labour Promise Free Cake” or “Stan Walker Elected Pope” or “Aussie Cricket Bans Sledging” only need a small shift in the facts to actually be true. You almost heard it here first! Or what about “Dan Carter Scores Heat Pump Sales Job”? Oh no, wait a minute, that is true.

So when my eyes landed on the (apparently award-winning) stuff.co.nz news website headline “Katy Perry accused of ‘horrific cruelty’” (http:// www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/music/9171496/ Katy-Perry-accused-of-horrific-cruelty) my day took a turn for the better. Has the squeaky stateside songstress given up kissing girls and gone for the full sado-masochistic lifestyle, or taken up eating cats? Well, nearly. Well, probably not at all, actually. It turns out that PETA (the fringe animal rights group) have hit out at dear Katy for using exotic animals in her latest hit single ‘Roar’, claiming that animals used for entertainment endure horrific cruelty.

Now I’m not a fan of either performing animals or Katy Perry, and assumed that maybe the poor beasts had had to listen to her sing, but not so. The logic seems to be that some animals endure cruelty in order make them perform tricks in public, which is in some cases probably true, therefore the fact that they were used in Ms Perry’s pop ditty video means she is guilty of ‘horrific cruelty’.

Hang on a minute, aren’t whales still slaughtered in some backward, sorry Japan ‘less developed’, parts of the world, and I took some photos of killer whales the other week and posted them on Facebook. Good grief, I must be a bastard! “Hack has whale of a crime” or “Evil journo is animal exploiter” can only be a matter of a few facts away.

Searching for the real facts of the story in the article being fruitless, and probably pointless, my eyes were drawn to the real news. Second most viewed story of the day apparently is ‘Miley Cyrus un-follows Liam Hemsworth’. Now you might need to read that again depending on your age, and ask a long list of reasonably relevant questions, but that, dear reader is the stuff customers choose.

So perhaps you should ask the real question – who gives a stuff about facts, or real news.

Mum always said she didn’t want too much fuss when she went.

That was how she approached everything in life. Just get on with it, no fuss.

Stay cheerful, always helpful but standing strong when it was important.

So I’ll try not to make too much of a fuss, Mum. Just a few short lines in salute of the best mother, wife, and grandmother ever.

Jean Anne Rogers you are a tower of strength in our family. Always looking on the cheery side, but “firm but fair” when it counted.

Your commitment and love to our family was unwavering and the life lessons you instilled in us and the many people whose lives you touched, immeasurable.

Not only raising a family and giving us every opportunity possible, but later in all your volunteer work, such as Riding for the Disabled, Waipuna Hospice and your enthusiasm for the many group pastimes, such as the Marching Grans, Wacky Walkers and the garden club.

It was great to see your lifelong love of animals, then your horseriding rekindled in later years, taking on many horsetreks on Waka late into your seventies with Dad in support in the motorcaravan.

Your enthusiasm and positive outlook is inspiring and will continue to shine bright as a leading light in our family.

There. Short and Snappy. Just as you like it.

Bayfair re-think Stephen Bird outside the public walkway Bayfair hopes to own.

A resident’s objection to Bayfair expansion plans has Tauranga City Council taking another look at pedestrian traffic flows around the shopping complex.

Farm St couple Stephen Bird and Alison Potter are objecting to the council’s intentions to block off the ends of both Harris and Carter streets and revoke the connecting access way.

Bayfair, Baywave and the Arataki skatebowl are drivers of pedestrian traffic throughout the Arataki area, but nothing has been provided for them, says Stephen.

People crossing Girven Rd from Baywave and the skatebowl go through the fuel station forecourt because it is the safest pedestrian route.

As residents of Farm St with young children the couple regularly use these roads, as they form an important part of the public pedestrian and open space network, says Stephen.

“It seems stupid to drive 100 metres to go to the shop. We tend to walk the area quite a bit.”

There’s limited provision for safe pedestrian and cycle access in the area – and Stephen believes it is not reasonable to further reduce these provisions to

suit the demands of a single adjacent private landowner.

The couple feel it is important a safe network for moving around be maintained, given there are many children and young people in the area, and community facilities nearby.

Currently it is not possible to circumnavigate Bayfair Shopping Centre using public footpaths or public space, says Stephen. “Connections into Bayfair are dangerous for all those not using motor vehicles.”

The current street form of cross-linking roads and access ways in Arataki provides an almost continuous public space from Oceanbeach Rd through to Harris St and Maunganui Rd. Removing them is contrary to strategies the TCC has agreed to implement, he says. The integrated transport strategy, urban design strategy, disability strategy and sustainable living – all these documents state council’s commitment to delivering a city promoting pedestrian use and linkages between neighbourhoods. Stephen wants some of the land, being bought by Bayfair owners AMP Capital, used to create public access routes.

TCC councillors agreed to meet with the objectors and Bayfair to work through the issues.

Serious crash on State Highway 2

Two people were taken to Tauranga Hospital after a serious crash on State Highway 2 near Omokoroa.

The crash involving a ute and tanker truck happened about 50m north of Francis Road about 5.15am on Thursday.

St John Ambulance transported the 46-year-old driver of the ute to hospital with serious leg injuries, while a 41-year-old suffered minor injuries.

At the time of print, a hospital spokesperson says the 46-year-old is stable in the orthopaedic ward.

The 41-year-old Tauranga man was discharged.

Police Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

Tauranga man lands 354kg tuna

A Tauranga man may have broken a world record after reeling in a 354kg tuna in Greymouth.

Kevin Baker was on a fishing charter in the south for the last week and hauled the possible world record breaker in at 4am on Saturday, September 14.

Carcases dumped in Wairoa

Animal carcases have been found dumped in the Wairoa River near Bethlehem, following an illegal dumping along the riverbank last month.

Three deer carcases were reported dumped under the bridge, just upstream from popular whitebaiting areas, reports the Bay of Plenty Regional Council.

About two and a half tonnes of illegally dumped rubbish, including sheep carcases, guts, skins and heads, tyres, batteries, engines, computers and car parts was recovered along a 200metre stretch of the river in mid-August.

Snapper bag limits cut

Snapper bag limits for recreational fishers have been cut from nine to seven per day, the Ministry for Primary Industries announced this week.

Minister Nathan Guy announced on Monday the recreational catch size will also increase from 27-30cm. The changes will come into effect on April 1, 2014.

Campers banned on Marine Parade

In an about move Tauranga City Council has decided to ban freedom camping along Marine Parade.

The last minute decision was made after more than 30 residents attended a council meeting to support Marine Parade residents speaking against the council’s draft freedom camping bylaw.

Councillors bowed to pressure and voted 7 to 2 in favour of a complete ban along Marine Parade.

Murray Guy and Terry Molloy voted against the ban, councillor Tony Christensen was absent, and Mayor Stuart Crosby took no part in the vote due to a conflict of interest with his brother owning the Papamoa Beach Holiday Park.

Horse killed at Te Puna

A horse had to be put down after it was struck by a car on State Highway 2 near Te Puna.

The horse was standing in the middle of the lane when the car struck it about 7.30pm on Tuesday, says Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager, Senior Sergeant Ian Campion.

The 20-year-old driver and sole occupant attempted to avoid a collision, but struck the animal with the front left fender. The driver was uninjured, but the horse suffered critical injuries and was euthanised at the scene, say police.

The 18-year-old deckhand is part of a rare world record double after lending a leading hand in catching two monstrous-sized northern pacific bluefin tuna off the coast of Greymouth.

Onboard Whakatane-based Enchanter Fishing Charter’s Cova Rosa, David first led a 296kg tuna, caught by a woman on September 2, and then just last week helped family-friend Kevin Baker haul in his 354kg tuna – both on 60kg line class.

And despite being pretty green after leaving Aquinas College late last year, he’s happy to shoulder the hefty responsibility towards the ends of the fight.

“I love it. You get the adrenaline rush and you almost get superhuman strength to be honest; I wouldn’t classify myself as a big guy but I’ve broken about five traces this year and the traces we use are over 400 pound traces,” says David.

“My job is to get the fish that last six or seven metres to the boat. There is a lot of pressure on myself – once you grab that trace the angler’s job is done and it’s all down to you.”

Growing up learning the ins and outs of fish-

ing with his family, the career choice is something which excites David on a daily basis – though he admits he is always keen to learn more.

“I grew up recreational fishing with my dad and we started off catching kingfish and tuna and then marlin. Learning always started with my dad and then I have gone in leaps and bounds with Lance [Enchanter Fishing Charter’s owner].

“Being a deckhand is not just about fishing it’s about how to cook and it teaches you life skills and people skills. I didn’t know how to cook before I went

on the boat.”

Looking ahead in his fledgling fishing career David is first planning to study for his Inshore Launch Masters licence in October, which allows him to charter a boat within 12 miles of New Zealand waters before his dream goal.

“Ultimately I would like to get my Offshore Launch Masters, which is about another four years away. I need 18 months in restricted waters and that’s actually quite a big ticket to do and involves four months at the polytechnic.”

Surfing on the family wave Surrounded by surfing from a young age, Mount Maunganui’s Jordan Griffin is aiming to following his father’s waves when he competes at the World Longboard Championship in Peru next week.

It will be the second world event the 17-year-old has surfed at during the last 18 months, after competing well at the International Surfing Association world junior championships in Panama last April. Back then Jordan was “pretty amped” with his performance, finishing 31st out of a field of about 100 – now believing the top level competition experience will help him in Peru.

“I understand what the judges want and how to prepare for hard heats. Preparation was definitely something I really value learning from my trip to Panama.”

The Tauranga Boys’ College Year 12 student joins former Mount local Ant McColl, now based in Taranaki, Piha’s Zen Wallis and Belinda Goodwin from Raglan, in the four-member New Zealand team competing in the week-long

September 22-28 event.

Jordan, who is competing in the under 18 competition, says he’s “pretty pumped” to have been selected for the worlds after winning the under 18 Strongbow Longboard Tour last season.

It was a good season for him, as he also took out the longboard championships in Australia – a title he is defending this summer.

“After coming first in the Australian open for longboarding it was a big eyeopener for me. I want to get back over there and defend my title.”

Jordan laughs about longboarding’s reputation as an old man’s pursuit, saying the fierce standards on the waves make it “way harder than an old man’s sport, that’s for sure”.

Alternating between short and longboarding for many years Jordan says mixing it up keeps it interesting. Despite the jokes about longboarding, Jordan says he loves the more relaxed atmosphere with longboarding.

Jordan’s father Philip Griffin at his peak was ranked third-best longboarder in the world.

Hawaiian odyssey Some people visit Hawaii for the surf, sun and sand – but not 22-year-old Hannah Wells.

After placing first in the Under 24 section of the Xterra National Championships earlier this year, the Tauranga athlete will represent New Zealand at the Xterra World Championships in Hawaii next month.

Xterra is an international multisport event, comprising of swimming, mountain biking and running – an event Hannah, who as a child always enjoyed team sports, picked up last year.

“A few years ago I started mountain biking just for fun, and I’ve always like running. I then injured myself running so I started swimming – and someone said to me, ‘Why don’t you do all three’.”

The national Xterra event in April was Hannah’s first off-road multisport event. After winning her division and qualifying for the world championship, she decided to “give it a good go” and has been training 18-20 hours a week to prepare.

This month she also took out the Monty’s Revenge 55km multisport event at Ohope – a win she hopes to replicate next month.

Growing up involved in team sports, such as netball and volleyball, Hannah says the transition to individual sport was refreshing, and an escape from the politics of team sports.

She still trains with a group, which encourages her to push herself, but with such an immense love for triathlons, staying motivated isn’t an issue.

“I found it to be a great way to stay fit, push myself, and take my mind of the stresses of studying.”

Hannah studies in Auckland during the week, and returns home every second weekend. She wishes to thank her local sponsors Lysaght Consultants, Smith Sports Shoes, Oceanblue health club and Cycle Obsession for their on-going support.

The NZ Transport Agency has changed its funding focus which is now focused on funding peak commuter hours. So the majority of NZTA’s funding will go to where congestion is greatest – ie: Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

This means there will be more pressure on government funding.

The Port of Tauranga is New Zealand’s most efficient export port with 54.9% owned by the regional council through Quayside Holdings Ltd.

The Papamoa Park is a fantastic regional park – 135 hectares providing walks through pure native bush and grassland. Green space is precious.

The government’s new rules for managing fresh water in NZ will mean changes to how we manage allocation and quality.

I support investment in good evaluation of water quality and quantity so decisions around how we manage water in the future can be evidence based and fair.

Are you a ratepayer?

The regional council is focused on an internal cost efficiency programme with a total target of saving $750,000 in business operation costs by 2014.

I also believe in the shared services model.

I endorse the “doing business better” programme and believe we need to exercise efficiency measures wherever they can be identified.

This model of public asset ownership is a very good one and whilst the regional council receives the dividend for the benefit of the region, it remains at arm’s length from the day to day management of the shareholding.

I support the current model of the cornerstone shareholding of the Port of Tauranga Ltd.

Why should we plan?

I want to work with a range of parties to look at ways we can achieve more green space and protect our biodiversity.

Do you think we need good investment in infrastructure?

The regional council is helping develop a BOP spatial plan which will provide a clear development vision and investment blueprint for the BOP.

The council has established a regional infrastructure fund and set aside $38 million for external infrastructure projects in its 10-year plan.

I fully endorse the need to develop a BOP spatial and investment plan.

I fully support the Council’s position but would like to see more progress on best use of “public wealth” as part of the regional investment strategy.

Do we need economic development?

The BOP has high rates of unemployment and an aging population.

We must find sustainable economic growth solutions that provide job opportunities.

I support initiatives that promote sustainable employment opportunities whilst leveraging our fantastic lifestyle.

Should we protect our harbour?

The Tauranga Harbour is what defines us. It is a place of peaceful reflection or active recreation. It is our sanctuary and our playground. It is magnificent ecology and it must have our absolute protection and enhancement. In 201314 the regional council is committing over $4 million to work in the Tauranga Harbour.

I am committed to seeing the whole of Harbour plan in place that secures our magnificent Harbour against further damage. I want to see investment in research and science that provides the best long term solutions for the whole catchment.

I believe the Tauranga and Western BOP sub-region can create an amazing network of parks, green spaces, walkways and cycleways.

There are over 2000 volunteers involved in regional council related activities and the council wants to provide more support to these “nuggets of gold” groups like CoastCare, LandCare, EstuaryCare, Harbour Wardens and Enviroschools.

Volunteers are the heart of our communities. They need to be respected, valued, supported and enabled.

I support working with a range of organisations to create a unique network of walkways and cycleways.

I want to work to see volunteers and their amazing work and commitment honoured and enabled.

Team’s thriller cycling ride A surge in mountain biking popularity is seeing Tauranga Boys’ College students getting on their bikes and clocking up the kilometres in search of future success.

What started two years ago with three riders gearing up for competitions is fast developing into a cycling stronghold at the school – with about 17 riders now tackling the rugged terrain sport in a determined fashion.

Earlier this month, the college’s squad entered three teams and one solo rider in Taupo’s annual Jamis Day-Night Thriller, which returned with a number of medals following the energy-sapping experience.

The annual event sees individuals and teams complete a 7km, 30 minute specifically-designed circuit which includes fast, open park grounds, and downhill, pine needle-covered forest tracks.

In the three-hour solo, Tristan Haycock claimed silver after finishing one lap behind eventual winner Carl Van Den Heuvel on 14 laps.

Along with Tristan, the college’s junior team finished second; and the senior team claimed third overall in the 12-hour team race. Year 9 Jack Wilson and Year 11 Damien Haupt won gold in the six-hour team race as part of an external team.

Community confidence Trust and confidence in police continues to increase according to the latest Citizens’ Satisfaction Survey.

According to the survey overall trust and confidence is at 79 per cent, up two per cent from last year.

The independently-run survey asks people their views about Police, feelings of safety and what their service experience was like if they recently had contact with police.

Close to 10,000 people throughout the country took part in the research.

Western Bay of Police area commander Inspector Clifford Paxton says his staff work hard to provide a service for the Western Bay community, ensuring public trust and confidence is retained.

“We police with the mandate of our communities and rely heavily on their

support and assistance.

“That support is never taken for granted and is something our members work hard to maintain. We are fortunate that we have a large number of partners and community members working with us to achieve a safer Western Bay of Plenty.”

Clifford says the safety of community members is extremely important to police and through their assistance and support Western Bay officers are better able to respond and prevent circumstances arising.

“We appreciate that continued support and assistance and I am grateful for the work our communities, partners and members do to make the Western Bay of Plenty a safer place.”

Bylaw adoptions

In addition to the high profile about-turn on aspects of the Freedom Camping Bylaw this week, Tauranga City Council’s adopted several other bylaws with much less fan-fare.

They include adoption of the Coastal Reserves Management Plan 2013 and the Liquor Free and Vehicle Free Zones in Public Places Bylaw, which creates new liquor free zones in Greerton, Papamoa and Brookfield.

Iwi/hapu management plans

Tauranga City Council has approved funding for three iwi/hapu management plans this week. Tapuika Iwi Authority is granted $5000, Ngati Tapu hapu and Ngai Tukairangi Hapu’s application for $8390 is approved and the Ngat Kapu hapu’s request for $20,000 is knocked back to $5850.

The funding is from $30,000 which council approved to support development of the iwi/hapu management plans.

Cyclists permitted

Cyclists are going to return to the Harbour Drive footpath after they were kicked off a few months ago for alleged bad behaviour.

TCC transport manager Martin Parkes says it’s not the narrowness, it’s the path’s legal status as a footpath, which means cyclists have to keep off. TCC can change the footpath’s legal status by amending the Traffic/Parking Bylaw, which is what it plans to do.

Fling for spring

Residents with green fingers can seek springtime inspiration from garden centres and nurseries from Bethlehem to Katikati at Te Puna Quarry Park’s inaugural Spring Fling this month.

Te Puna Quarry Park committee member Jo Dawkins hopes the event will inspire residents to create their own beautiful gardens as well as raise awareness of the park.

The orchids are in bloom and the clivias are radiant at the 32-hectare park, but the flower-filled wonderland would be nothing without the tireless commitment of a group of volunteers, who create, fund and maintain the park on a weekly basis, says Jo. Started about 15 years ago by Te Puna resident Shirley Sparks, the park has been developed from a unused quarry into walks, displays, and gardens for the community to enjoy. About 35 committee members volunteer their time every Tuesday morning to plant, weed and develop the park – as well as using their own money to buy plants.

“Some are donated and some volunteers have to buy,” says Jo. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s just so enjoyable. It’s so nice up there.”

Garden areas include irises, cacti and succulents, an Australian area, a native arboretum, a bonsai corner, a South African area and a butterfly garden.

The volunteers come up with ideas for new creations and develop them together.

“It is a community development in the environmental arts.” Without secure funding, the committee relies on donations from the public of money (in the donation box at the park entrance) and of plants.

Jo says they are always looking for new volunteers too. “It’s an exciting project to be involved in, and so rewarding.”

This month’s Spring Fling on Sunday, September 29, from 10am-4pm, includes model gardens, abseiling, guided walks, plant sales, floral art displays and more.

Jo says it’s a chance for the community to enjoy and explore the park, as well as seek inspiration and ideas.

Thirst for water quality Hiking 3000 kilometres might be a thirsty task for some but not for one Mount Maunganui man who holds a primary focus on inspecting New Zealand’s water quality.

For the next five months, high school relief English teacher Lance Talstra is swapping whiteboard markers and literary novels for hiking boots, research and scenic landscapes.

Starting on October 1, Lance will be walking the Te Araroa track from Cape Reinga to Bluff, and is predicted to finish early March – in an attempt to highlight what he describes as a “disappointing” state of the country’s waterways.

What started out as a bad water-related incident in the Waikato River nearly 20 years ago has grown into a passionate obsession for the 37-year-old; and he feels the time is right to promote the issue. It is expected he will need to cover 20km per day to make it by March.

“I used to swim in the river quite a bit until a day when a number of us got sick and we never went in again. Looking back I thought ‘gee that’s a real shame’ we can’t use a good reserve like that as a recreational resource,” says Lance.

“Since then it’s been in the news quite a bit and I think the latest figures show 60 per cent of our waterways are unfit for recreational use, which I think is an alarming figure really.”

Along the way Lance will be looking to interview experts including NIWA and the Department of Conservation along with ordinary Kiwis to find out what can be done to turn this polluted problem around.

In a tightly packed itinerary, Lance will also be regularly updating a blog and keeping his Facebook followers up to date – all while covering an estimated 20km per day to reach his March deadline.

“Hopefully I can get some people interested to take some time out of their day to have a chat briefly while I’m on the trail. I have been researching and looking at some places and obviously the Waikato River is one place to stop.

“I want to see who is making a difference to improve our water quality and who needs to clean up their act.”

Trialling live It is hoped a trial introducing live monitoring of CCTV cameras in three Western Bay towns will enhance proactive prevention of crime and help keep the communities safe.

The Western Bay of Plenty District Council is funding the trial to monitor 22 CCTV cameras, including Te Puke’s 10 cameras, and six installed in both Maketu and Katikati.

WBOPDC community development officer Ben Wilson says previously the cameras (installed by each town’s community board) have been recording footage but were not monitored in real time.

“It means we can have a lot of real time response to any potential criminal activity or events that require an appropriate response.”

The cameras have motion detectors and sound an alarm when motion is detected.

Local company Tarnix Security will monitor the cameras, an operator will react to alarms and check cameras to ascertain if an event is happening and decide whether it requires a response, including police assistance.

“It’s a natural evolution, CCTV is more effective when it’s monitored live – and it’s proactive rather than reactive,” says Ben. Ben hopes the live monitoring may curb anti-social or criminal behaviour.

“Usually, it doesn’t take long for those in the criminal fraternity, or disposed to be a bit of nuisance, to know they that are being monitored in public spaces – that in itself is a very powerful tool.”

But Ben says expectations must be realistic – “they are not the silver bullet to solving crime in communities”.

The trial, beginning this week, is being undertaken

Tomorrow the Ricki Herbert Football Academy under 16 squad departs on a two-week trip to Europe to test themselves against some of the most fluent footballers in the world.

Among this next generation of future All Whites is Jack – Bay of Plenty and Waikato’s sole representative. Hailing from the Tauranga United Club, the 15-year-old striker confirmed his place last December after an impressive tournament in Melbourne for the club’s under 19 side where he caught the eye of Herbert’s son Kale – coach of the under 16 side. “I was surprised and ecstatic, to be named, both at the same time because I didn’t really expect to be picked in it,� says Jack.

Spending seven days in Barcelona, Spain and five days in London, Jack is hopeful they will fit as much football in as humanly possible to reap the benefits of the international exchange.

The trip also lends itself as a chance to briefly catch up with family in London after moving from the UK to Papamoa with his family in 2006. But Jack, on a recent goal scoring spree for his Tauranga United under 17 team, says his primary focus is testing himself against some European sides in what is a prime opportunity to put New Zealand further on the footballing map. “I am definitely looking forward to the trip and looking forward to experiencing some different playing styles. “They will be big guys over there and it will be physical, but I’m more than capable of matching them over there.�

A born-and-bred Everton fan, he is aware this is the perfect opportunity to grab with both hands and push for higher honours maybe not now but further down the track of a sporting career. “If I play well hopefully it will open up some doors for more over there or with the Wellington Phoenix.�

Girls show golden talent Tauranga Girls’ College music students have truly experienced a golden week – recently winning top prizes in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Bands and Orchestra Festival.

The girls’ Big Band and Guitar Group received a gold award at the festival held in Hamilton at WEL Academy on September 6.

A gold award and a merit endorse-

ment were also presented to the school’s Symphonic Band, while the Sax Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble gained Silver awards.

The college also achieved a gold award from the NZ Concert Bands Association competitions.

Principal Pauline Cowens says this award is particularly significant because the girls’ are a non-auditioned, all-comers group. This means the majority of students have been learning their instruments for less than five years.

Ask most 13 year-old boys what they are going to do when they leave school and you’ll usually just get a shrug.

But for Year 8 Otumoetai Intermediate School pupil Caleb Woodbine there is no question – he has his heart firmly set on a musical career.

It is clear Caleb is a teen on a mission – in the last six months he’s released four albums of his own compositions on the internet under the artist name ‘Prowlerforce’.

“I’ve always been interested in music since I was little,” says Caleb. “It’s just something I really love.”

Ever since Caleb began learning piano four years ago he has been playing around with his own music. These days Caleb is more likely to be making his music on

his iPod than on a piano keyboard, and is regularly releasing the best tracks he records online.

Caleb describes it as “alternative, electronic and experimental” – producing instrumental compositions which are part concert hall recital, part nightclub dance track. As a composer Caleb says his inspiration often comes when he least expects, sometimes making it frustrating when chords play out in his mind that he is unable to capture.

“It happens all the time when songs pop into you head – but it’s annoying when it’s in class and I don’t have a chance to write it down.”

Rena-inspired creativity Standing one metre tall, reaching one metre wide – this piece of artwork has been precisely plotted, planned and produced since last December.

It was an attempt by members of Creative Fibre Mount Maunganui to attain the coveted Wairoa Trophy – the prize for the best piece at the national Creative Fibre festival in Rotorua.

Each club was given a brief to create art embodying ‘explosions of fibre’ and the Mount club chose to design their piece around the Rena wreck of October 2011.

Member Jan Wild says the Rena was the obvious choice for their creation, which includes spinning, weaving and embellishing.

The piece didn’t win, but Jan says they’re hoping to either sell it, or display it in public.

Reverend Lorna turns 102 Lorna Aberley jokes that her secret to reaching 102 years old is never getting married. But, in fact, it’s a life dedicated to serving others that Lorna remembers, and attributes to her long and healthy life.

Lorna turned 102 on Wednesday, celebrating with friends and relatives at Radius Matua rest home, accepting a glimpse of the spotlight in what has been a selfless life.

“It’s just another birthday. You don’t think about it, and another year just goes by.”

It’s not surprising the years have flown by – Lorna has packed a lot into her years.

Born in Christchurch in 1911, she recalls her mother talking about WW1 at just three years old.

She started work in 1928, entering the world of nursing, which ultimately led her across the world – working in an Indian hospital and training facility for 22 years.

It was there she also unofficially adopted a young orphan girl, who she looked after before handing her to friends in New Zealand.

Her work in India also earned Lorna a Queen’s Service Medal in 1977.

“It’s a funny feeling. You get the letter for the Governor General and I remember taking it and my knees wobbled.

“The year I got it the Queen came to New Zealand, so she conducted the investiture.”

Later in life Lorna also became an ordained minister, and now goes by the name Reverend Aberley at the rest home. At 102, Lorna is in good health – so much so, that when she applied for rest home care at age 100 in Hamilton, the Waikato District Health Board turned her down because she was too fit.

That decision led her to Matua, where she can be close to her niece.

Celebrating community This Sunday there are even more reasons to love Arataki than normal, says community centre manager Matthew Strange.

After the success of last year’s inaugural Arataki Festival, Matthew is expecting an even bigger turnout this year.

“It’s going to be a great event for the whole community with lots of fun things happening for everyone at Arataki Park.”

From live performances, by music and dance groups on an outside stage, to food stalls and carnival rides, Matthew says the event showcases the many great things the Arataki community offers during the festival from 11am-2pm. Demonstrations and mini competitions for

skateboard, scooter and BMX riders have been organised by Dialled Indoor to run throughout the event at the Arataki skate park. Softball Bay of Plenty are holding an open day so people can visit and have a go at softball or tee-ball, while Arataki Rugby Club is also running an open day.

“This year we’ve gone bigger.

We’ve got more attractions and more community displays by groups, like Neighbourhood Support.”

Organisers are expecting to higher numbers smash last year’s debut crowd of about 2000.

“Families can come along and listen to the live music in the park and enjoy some rides then head over to Baywave for a swim – so it’s a real family day for all ages with something for everyone.”

Matakana Island’s historic school house The Weekend Sun is profiling some of Tauranga’s historic places dotted around the city.

This week reporter Zoe Hunter looks at one of a few surviving pre-1900 native school houses in the country.

The Matakana Island community is rightly proud of Te Kotukutuku School House. New Zealand Historic Places Trust lower northern manager Fiona Low says the 116-year-old school house is the first formal education facility on the island.

Officially opened on November 10, 1897, the school house served more than 50 years as the main educational facility for Maori children on the island, ranging from new entrant level through to what was then Form Two. The school house represents the philosophies of the Native School System – established in 1867 to 1969 – focusing on European colonisation and the employment of education as a means of civilisation.

Under the Native School Code only married European couples could be employed. Maori was not to be spoken when instructing senior classes but could be used in junior classes for the purpose of familiarising children with the meanings of English words.

Fiona says the school house reflects the aspirations of community elders who petitioned the Minister of Education for a native school in 1896.

Now, no longer operating as a school house, the Matakana Island community wants to see the building used to display archives and history about the school house, the community, and Matakana Island itself.

Sticky paws missing Young tabbies ready for homes But Oska is no ordinary thief – he’s a cat. The chocolate-spotted ocicat has made a criminal name for himself, taking neighbourhood children’s socks, slippers, people’s underwear and kiwifruit pickers’ gloves.

Oska’s owner Leslie Wallace says it began with a small pile of children’s clothes and grew over the next seven months to more than Leslie Wallace with a poster of her missing cat Oska.

Once Oska had collected about 80 items, Leslie put streets if they were his clothes that she found Oska’s flyers up around the neighbourhood to try and return victims. About 90 per cent of the clothes he had the ‘stolen goods’. taken were from one family, she says.

She had no response from her flyers, and it wasn’t “The owners were totally unaware that their clothes until she asked a young boy who was wandering the were going missing,” says Leslie. “Thankfully, they saw the funny side of it all.”

But this week Oska’s story took a not-so-funny turn. Leslie recently moved house to The Lakes, and Oska has since disappeared.

The pedigree cat has not been seen since last Thursday and Leslie is desperate to find her feline friend.

She has placed flyers around the area but at the time of print, had not received any good news.

“There is a large dog behind my house which may have scared him off.”

A picture perfect plan A phenomenal response to his photography project depicting the daily thrills of Tauranga’s elderly has prompted Ross Brown to share the images with the city.

Last November Ross, Sun Media’s general manager, was approached by members of the Age Friendly Strategy

group asking him to take some photographs of elderly residents for their campaign.

“Initially it was only going a small photo shoot in support of the strategy and although the project had no funding for photography, I wanted it to be special and done right.”

Almost a year, and hundreds of photographs, later Ross’ photos are being exhibited at Tauranga Art Gallery for

Thirty photos were selected for the exhibition, and feature the city’s elderly enjoying the theatre, out in the community, getting an ice cream, playing Bridge – and much more.

The collection includes Ross’ favourite: a woman hanging out the washing.

Funnily enough, it’s the one image that was not staged.

“I just saw the opportunity, popped up from the clothes line and grabbed her.

And it’s become the one everyone seems to be really relating with.

“People’s reactions have been so delightful and rewarding,” says Ross. “We thought wouldn’t it be great if we could share these with the wider public.”

Tauranga City Council project manager Rochelle Friend says the photo collection is a valuable asset and “we are extremely grateful to Ross for the time and effort he put in to provide this valuable resource”.

At Thursday’s Strategy and Policy Committee it was noted discussions have been held with Tauranga Moana Iwi Collective and Matakana Island representatives about future ownership of the land – and their clear preference is the council should resolve in this decision to transfer the land to Ngai Te Rangi entity two years after a reserve management plan is adopted.

Council staff are seeking direction and approval for preparation of a draft plan.

Western Bay of Plenty District Councillors set about adopting the council’s 2013 Annual Report this week, showing the organisation’s financial results and progress made against its Long Term Plan.

The Annual Report, including draft financial statements, cost of service statements and non-financial performance reports for each of council’s activities and the draft Summary Annual Report 2012/2013 was presented for approval on Thursday.

Psychoactive substances policy

A Local Approved Products policy for the Western Bay, to influence where premises selling psychoactive substances can be located, could be developed during the next year.

On Thursday, Western Bay of Plenty District councillors were given the option to vote for or against development of a Local Psychoactive Substances Policy in council’s 2013/2014 work programme.

If you think exercise is not for you then you obviously haven’t discovered social table tennis.

This week, as part of Sport Bay of Plenty’s Play in the Bay promotion, there are two chances to discover the appeal of social table tennis with groups at the Mount and in Tauranga.

Mount Social Table Tennis joint coordinator Karen Yeager says most people don’t appreciate how much exercise you get from social table tennis.

“It’s only after they’ve stopped playing that people realise how active they’ve been.” Every Tuesday keen players from the Mount Maunganui and Bayfair area head to the Arataki Community Centre for a hit-out (7.30pm-9.30pm, $4, details: Matt 07 575 2048), playing a mix of 15-minute singles and doubles games.

“It’s completely social so we don’t keep track of scores, but we do have

some very good players.”

Tauranga residents can save themselves the trip over the bridge with weekly social table tennis sessions run at Memorial Hall on Wednesdays 1pm-3pm.

Spring festival’s quirky new guests Creative, interesting and “almost edible” scarecrows are being prepped and perfected ahead of Tauranga Farmers Market’s annual Spring Festival this Saturday.

Straying from their traditional use, these scarecrows are the creations of the market’s stallholders, who each year design a scarecrow representing their business and enter it in the Spring Festival competition.

Market manager Trixie Allen is expecting about 10 weird and wonderful creations, and if last year’s entries are anything to go by – visitors are in for a treat.

“We get some very, very interesting creatures coming up, last year’s winners were classic. We get a lot of laughs out of the scarecrows, it’s a great way for stallholders to have some fun too.”

Tauranga celebrity chefs Attila Kovac, from Mills Reef Restaurant, and David Hunt, from Comida, will judge the scarecrows from 8am9am and announce the winners at 9am.

“All the scarecrows will be on display for everyone to see. And the winning ones will wear their rosettes. And if people want to stop and have a chat and meet the judges, they’ll be in their chef uniforms.”

Saturday’s festival also features a live, springthemed cooking display with celebrity chef Peter Blakeway, which will be filmed for the New Zealand programme ‘Taste From Our Land’.

All the market’s usual stalls will be there too, selling delicious products from across the Bay. Saturday’s market, on rain or shine, is at Tauranga Primary from 7.45am to 12pm.

Wood-fired pizza tantalises tastebuds Confession: I can be a bit of a food snob when it comes to eating out. Restaurants should never be about greasy or average food – that’s what takeaways are for.

So when offered the chance to review Ajo’s Cafe & Restaurant – a Mediterranean pizza/pasta eatery in Mount Maunganui – I went in with stringent expectations and a hungry tum.

Entering Ajo’s, I was immediately taken with the snug surroundings. For 7.30pm on a Tuesday, the restaurant was bustling, and my partner and I were seated at a table amid the action.

Open for more than 17 years, Ajo’s’ claim to fame is its gourmet wood-fired pizzas, and everyone I spoke to beforehand agreed. These are made on light dough bases, made on-site using traditional methods, and then handcrafted to order. Diners can even watch, and smell

(yum), their pizzas cooking in the open oven.

Naturally, we had to try these, so we picked out two delicious-sounding options and ordered a half-andhalf large pizza. We also chose a pasta dish for good measure.

About 20 minutes later our food arrived. The pizza was huge and presented on a wooden board. Option one was the Chicken Sunrise, which owner Wendy says is the most popular dish. This has cranberry sauce, pesto, chicken, brie, capsicum, mozzarella and avocado sauce.

One word: Yum. It was a plateful of herby, sweet, chicken goodness – and definitely both our favourite for the night. Option two was Lambaada, which had Napoli sauce, lamb,

caramelised onion, capsicum, feta, wood-fired potatoes, pumpkin, mozzarella and tzatziki sauce.

The toppings on this one were piled high (they don’t hold back) and the potatoes were a scrumptious surprise.

The pasta, a Mediterranean Spinach Fettuccine with mushrooms, spinach, red onion, feta, courgettes in Napoli sauce, looked inviting in a big white bowl.

There were huge chunks of feta and courgette, and it felt pretty healthy for restaurant pasta – a good thing in my book.

Wendy came over and had a chat to us. She took over Ajo’s three years ago and she loves it. She’s doing a great job too, we left thoroughly satisfied and I wouldn’t shy away from going again. Try Ajo’s for yourself, there are different specials all week long.

Although similar in appearance to dill it has a distinct anise flavour. Fennel contains its own unique combination of phytonutrients and flavournoids, promoting strong antioxidant activity. The most interesting research done links it with anethole (an organic compound), which prevents activation of a potentially strong gene-altering and inflammation-triggering molecule.

This has shown to help reduce inflammation and the re-occurrence of cancers. Fennel is also an excellent source of vitamin C, fibre, folate and potassium.

The love or hate anise flavour of fennel is softened a lot by cooking, so after tasting an awesome mussel and fennel sausage a while ago, I decided to try my hand at this interesting combination by way of a fritter.

These days there are mussel fritters and then there are pathetic excuses for mussel fritters – these large, stodgy and possibly dodgy things have mussel flavour but little else going for them. So it’s time to rethink my old recipe and try a new approach.

With fresh, shucked mussels now available why not use them and save all the fuss?

Gala bigger and brighter

Tauriko School’s Spring Gala next weekend is set to be bigger and brighter than ever before, by combining with the finals day of The Lakes Classic Hole in One competition.

PTA chairperson Terri Ewart hopes combining with the Hole in One event will see this year’s school gala the biggest one yet. The top 60 people to land their ball within a circle around the pin will have a shot at big prizes at the finals, during the gala day.

The school’s Year 5 and 6 students will also be testing their entrepreneurial skills at the gala, running businesses created for the Young Enterprise scheme, including a gumboot throw and face painting stall.

The gala is on at The Lakes, outside the Carrus office on Sunday, September 29 from 10am-2pm.

Scottish Society turns 100

Tauranga Scottish Society celebrates 100 years this month with a birthday party on Saturday, September 28.

It was in January of 1913 a meeting was held for residents interested in the formation of a Scottish society; and on September 11, the first dance of the Bay of Plenty’s Scottish Society was held in Coronation Hall.

The name was changed to Tauranga Scottish Society in 1951 and monthly dances are now held on the last Saturday of the month 7.30pm-11pm

Final bout for skaters

Mount Militia’s Dangerous Curves are set to soar at their final home bout this month, as they tackle a three-team race against Taranaki and Wellington.

Tauranga’s home team of fierce female skaters will battle in the second War of the Wheels event at Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre on Saturday, September 28. Doors opens 4.30pm with skating kicking off 5pm. Tickets: adults $10, and under 12s $5.

Queen status for new Guides

Four Mount Maunganui girls have reached the ultimate goal in Girl Guides after achieving their Queen’s Guide Award.

Lucy Maltby, Kezia Tubbs, Mikayla Lawrence and Caitlin Hagberg will personally receive their certificates from the New Zealand Governor General later this year.

The Queen’s Guide Award is the highest youth award achievable in Girl Guides. Individuals who achieve the award have completed four years of hard work towards developing their leadership, communication, teamwork and life skills through guiding.

6-8 serves 2 dozen freshly shucked mussels (chopped and drained) 1 cup of finely sliced fennel bulb 3 medium size lemon’s zest and juice 2 Tbsp fresh chopped dill 1 Tbsp turmeric powder 1 Tbsp freshly cracked pepper ¾ cup glutinous rice flour 1 cup fine polenta 1 tsp of baking soda 3 beaten eggs Method Marinate the mussels in the lemon zest and juice, turmeric, chopped dill, fennel, pepper and cover with cling film for about two to three hours.

Drain the mussels and use the juice to make a batter with the two flours and baking soda. Add the beaten eggs and a little water if necessary. Add the wet mussel mix and fold altogether. Fry in small spoonfuls in a hot pan with a little oil until crisp (about two minutes) then turn and cook for a few minutes. Drain on kitchen paper and serve with a squeeze of lemon juice or tartar sauce.

We need to focus on providing reliable and affordable public transport, more green space and walkways and cycleways, getting certainty for finishing road and rail projects and providing support for investment in regional infrastructure and facilities.

I also believe in the shared services model to increase business efficiency, drive increased cost savings and add value.

Canadian man - who owns Kiwi Timber Slab Corporation in Canada– that was the beginning of a big development for the company.

The man’s purchase – a slab of wood for a home project – started the relationship between the two companies. Now, 50 different units ranging from tables, bar stools, and rocking chairs have been shipped to the Lakes District in Canada.

Owner Richard Knaggs says this is just the beginning of their working partnership. There is talk of the Canadian company wanting a shipment of 300 units per month, he says.

“This is not bad for a two-and-a-half-year-old business. Hopefully it will be the first of many.”

Since its success, the business has taken on six extra permanent employees.

Whatever you decide to wear on your big day, Corina says it’s all about working a style to suit body shape.

Most styles will suit everyone, but Corina says your height is governed by the fabric and where the fabric starts on the body – so be careful when choosing strapless or halter neck dresses.

The wedding day is about the bride, says Corina. “So her bridesmaids must not wear bright colours.”

An alternative is to wear deeply-coloured dresses that don’t compliment the bride’s ensemble, says Corina.

“It’s come down to dollars and cents and practicality, and possibly wearability [of the dress] afterwards.”

Bridal charity A Gatsby-theme event, raising funds to send a group of children living with cancer on a fun weekend retreat, is on this month.

The event, at Trinity Wharf will include a bridal/fashion show, a charity auction, and high tea nibbles, on Saturday, September 29.

Organiser Cassie Snow, who grew up within the bridal industry, is using her connections to put on the best event she can.

“I spent a lot of time in hospitals when I was a child. I know what it’s like to be all cooped up and just want to get out, so this is something I can give back.”

She hopes to send between five and 10 children, with their parents, on an overnight trip to Rotorua which will include a wildlife park visit and rides on the luge.

Businesses are donating items for the auction, and three young girls will be chopping off their long locks for CanTeen’s Beautiful Length on the day too.

Trans-continental Kia has arrived

For Ron Chamberlain there are few things as good as cruising on a motorcycle.

He’s had the bug since his teens, when back in his native Scotland he got his first bike – a 350cc Royal Enfield – at 17 years old.

“It weighed a tonne and it was terribly had to start,” recalls Ron, who despite these frustrations still had a great time on the bike.

These days you are most likely to see him riding his 1800cc Suzuki Boulevard trike, quite often dressed up in Red Cross branding to promote the medical support organisation.

As Red Cross Bay of Plenty council chairman he loves getting the bright red trike out to promote fundraising events. It will make its next appearance at Tauranga Red Rose Day fundraiser next month.

“I use it for any cause that will promote Red Cross. Many people find the trike fascinating.

Big and small kids, I have even had a few grannies on it as well.

“We will have it all over the place covered in roses to help raise funds.

It always creates a lot of attention, which is great,” says Ron, who got the trike made in 2008 to help him keep riding for years to come, with it standing up by itself.

“As you get a bit older it is hard, at times, to hold the big motorbikes upright. Some weigh in excess of 350kg.

“As a senior born-again bikie, it puts me back in my boyhood.”

While it does create a lot of attention, Ron jokes about discovering the trike has another advantage.

“I call it my trainer wheels. When you get a bit older it can be good to have your trainer wheels.”

As Ron’s first trike he says it takes a little to get used to: “When you go around corners you’ve got to remember it’s there”.

After an earlier near-miss riding his BMW GS 650 with a “huge

adult two-seater sidecar”, it’s a lesson he almost learned the hard way.

“We had a few adventures. The first time I jumped on it I nearly smashed into a lamp post because I wasn’t used to the side car. It jumped the sidewalk.

There was a bit of an art to the corners, but after that it was alright.”

Back in his early biking days in Britain Ron remembers one day breaking down on his 200cc Tiger Cub on the motorway, when some guys stopped to help him.

“They tried to put the bike in the bus. That was interesting. It couldn’t quite make it – it couldn’t quite squeeze in the door, the handle bars were just too wide,” he chuckles. Ron’s passion for bikes followed him to New Zealand where he has owned a series of bikes including a Honda V twin, which he has toured all over

Kia Motors New Zealand are already saying the award-winning 2.0 litre SUV is unlikely to be the last model to be imported from its Slovakia factory, with the company looking at other models available.

While the Sportage Euro is largely the same as the model previously produced in Korea, there are some

notable changes and additions including a factory-supplied SatNav for the first time in any new Kia sold in New Zealand.

The availability of SatNav also means buyers of models equipped with this feature will also come with the SUNA Live Traffic Update technology, which provides real-time traffic information on roads for drivers in the Auckland region – ideal for Bay drivers wanting to avoid traffic snarls when they visit the big smoke.

Mark Beeton’s Rove head-turner wh r 3500s was a erever it went.

‘Pimped out’ Rover the talk of the town Growing up in Sussex, Mark Beeton and his ‘pimped out’ Rover were the talk of the town.

Mark, who immigrated to New Zealand eight years ago, laughs as he recalls the fun times he had with the car back during the late 1980s in the South East England county.

“I was basically famous. Even now you could ask someone about the jacked-up rover back then [and] people remember it. I would get stopped constantly by the police to

see if it was legal.”

Mark was about 20 when he modified the 1976 Rover 3500s by adding a Jaguar rear axle and huge wheels, after being inspired by a car in the film ‘Thunderbolt and Lightfoot’.

“Talk about head turner,” elates Mark. “And the side pipes sounded great too.”

Mark used the car everyday in his hometown of East Grinstead, as well as regularly taking it on road trips where it always drew lots of attention.

“I would get stopped constantly by the

police to see if it was legal, even once having to take it to Sussex police traffic centre for an inspection.”

“The first time I went to the Chelsea cruise (a monthly cruise over Chelsea Bridge and surrounding roads) I was pulled over by the police.

“The car handled well, except when it hit a puddle and was sent aquaplaning: “It could be a bit of a problem.”

Antioxidant vitamins essential for health Free radicals are produced as a by-product of energy conversion in our cell engines, our amazing mitochondria.

If left unchecked they wreak havoc with our cells and body structures. Antioxidants are compounds that can donate electrons to free radicals so they become stable and not cause damage. Our antioxidant defences are multi-layered. These include the antioxidant vitamins C and E, some antioxidant enzymes we produce ourselves, other compounds we produce such as coenzyme Q10, and a vast range of phytonutrients we get from food.

Vitamin C is important in maintaining structures

Most of our vitamin C needs are readily obtained from fruit and vegetables. The main reason people should supplement though is to maintain the health of your blood vessels and skin. I recommend most people to supplement with 250-500mg but twice this with John Arts dose for those with circulatory problems and hypertension. Your daily multi should have about 200mg.

Vitamin E is the universal fat soluble antioxidant and is founds in nuts, seeds and plant oils such as sunflower, almonds and olives. Its main role is to protect the fat-based structures and compounds such as preventing cholesterol oxidation – the first step in coronary artery plaque formation. I recommend at least 100IU from a daily supplement and 200400IU for those with common heart problems, or high cholesterol. A good multi-vitamin should have these levels of vitamin E. Vitamin C is generally easy to get from diet but getting enough vitamin E, without overloading dietary fats is more of a challenge. Supplementation, of course, makes getting sufficient doses very easy, but as always everything starts with a good diet. Give me a call if you need more information. Festival for healthy living A festival informing people about different holistic healing methods and treatments is coming to Mount Maunganui next weekend.

Healthy hopes for kindergartens In three days’ time – two Western Bay kindergartens will know if they’re the ultimate New Zealand school in educating their pupils about healthy food.

Bay beauty awaiting her fate Tauranga’s Kylie Tan is settling back into her usual routine after returning this month from a whirlwind week-long trip to Thailand as a Miss Universe New Zealand finalist.

But the early childhood teacher, who describes the surprise trip to Thailand as “amazing”, is still waiting to find out her fate in the competition – to be announced next month.

Kylee, 23, flew to Thailand with 19 other finalists after an unexpected announcement made live on TV One’s Breakfast programme.

“We were told to meet in Auckland on the Monday, where we were then told the next morning live on Breakfast we would be flying to Thailand later that day.

“It was pretty surreal,” says Kylee.

The busy eight-day trip was jam-packed with interviews, photo-shoots and opportunities to bond with the locals.

“We had long days, up at 6.30am, in bed late, but everyone was so welcoming.”

Kylee says her fellow finalists are all really down to earth and not your stereotypical pageant contestants.

“We all had a 15kg bag limit, so there wasn’t room for loads of clothes and beauty products,” says Kylee.

This is the first year Kylee has competed in Miss Universe New Zealand but says she has had plenty of experience both with pageants and modelling.

“Last year I won Miss Hamilton, and was second runner up for Queen of the World.”

Kylee is unsure what the future holds once Miss Universe is over, but isn’t worried.

“At the moment I'm just going to see how it goes.”

The winner of Miss Universe New Zealand will be announced at a red carpet gala event at Auckland’s Sky City on October 5.

Miss Universe New Zealand will travel to Moscow to take part in Miss Universe, with the pageant to be screened live on Juice TV for the first time in 21 years.

Fairylicious supporting Cure Kids Tauranga mum Jodi Nicols and friend Stacey Prescott are on a fairylicious fundraising mission for Cure Kids.

The two women have entered the $10 Queenstown Challenge with the hope of raising a minimum of $7000 for the cause.

“We took part in the challenge last year as the ‘Super Mums’ and we raised $8500. But this year as ‘Fairylicious’ we’d like to raise $10,000, as the more money we can raise, the more research can be done to save more kids,” says Jodi.

The two mothers are taking on the fundraising challenge because Cure Kids is an organisation close to their hearts. Stacey says October 29, 2011, is a day she will never forget as it was the day her two-year-old son was diagnosed with Fragile X syndrome.

“Fragile X is a genetic mental retardation which can be tested for

if you know you are a carrier, but I wasn’t aware that I was.

The older he gets, the worse it will become,” says Jodi.

“There is no cure for Fragile X.” Jodi’s identical twin girls developed a rare form of twin-to-twin transfusion when they were still in her womb.

“As a result, when they were born five weeks early Zoe was bordering on anaemic and Mia was the opposite and diagnosed with polycythemia [overproduction of red blood cells] and had to have blood removed.”

Mia was also diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism (a condition of thyroid hormone deficiency present at birth).

“After extensive testing they [doctors] discovered a bleed and two clots in her brain, which fortunately weren’t neurological and didn’t require surgery to insert a shunt, as over time the blood reabsorbed.”

“We are fortunate enough to have healthy children, but there are many children living in New Zealand who aren’t, so we want to raise as much money as we can to support Cure Kids.”

The duo has a whole range of events underway to raise money, including TradeMe auctions selling donated products from businesses and monetary donations.

As well as competing in the Queenstown Challenge, the pair is hosting a fundraiser at the Shed Bar in Taupo on September 26.

Checks do change our lives Everybody has heard that heart checks save lives – but like many health warnings actually booking yourself in for a check is easy to put off until tomorrow.

It’s often only when you hear of a personal story that the message really hits home. Tauranga woman Pauline offers just that proof of heart checks saving, or at least changing, lives.

Pauline’s doctor shocked her into taking action when telling her there was a high chance she would have a heart attack or a stroke in about five years if she did not do something.

The warning came after the

results of Pauline’s blood tests were showing she had high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and was prediabetic.

Pauline had gone to her doctor when feeling tired and frustrated about her weight. The doctor suggested she walk every day and make changes to her diet, giving her a green prescription for support in making the changes.

The ultimate importance of breakfast You’ve been told that ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ and of course it is true.

A recent study performed at Harvard School of Public Health shows those who skip breakfast have a higher risk of heart disease.

The study found men who skipped breakfast had a 27 per cent higher risk of developing heart disease compared with men who ate breakfast.

Younger men (45-60 years) were most at risk. Preliminary findings suggest the same situation for women. So why is breakfast so important? There are many reasons but basically when you eat breakfast you are ‘breaking your fast’ of the night, filling up the tank for the day. It is stressful for the body to maintain ‘the fast’ longer than it should – and as we know, stress is a factor in heart disease.

If you do not fuel yourself well at the beginning of the day you become low in energy later and the tendency to eat easily accessible, usually sugar-loaded, food ensues.

A regular intake of these types of foods can lead to weight gain and diabetes, both risk factors for heart disease. I could go on…

Eating breakfast is an easy step to take to keep your heart healthy. Try a bircher muesli of wholegrain oats, shredded coconut, dried cranberries, cinnamon, sunflower seeds and ground almonds. Soak overnight in milk or orange juice. Add yoghurt and fresh berries in the morning. Eggs on grain toast is another option.

Wean yourself onto breakfast, have a small portion and then slowly increase that portion over time.

Why is it important to get a heart check?

One New Zealander dies every 90 minutes from heart disease, our country’s single biggest killer.

Marie, 46, had a heart attack with no obvious warning signs. Bruce was 52 when a heart check showed he was at risk of a heart attack. He changed his diet, became more active and has reduced his cholesterol, his weight – and his risk.

Heart Foundation in Tauranga heart health advocate Sandy Ritchie says heart disease is affecting people at a younger age and she urges people to get a heart check.

“Many early deaths from heart disease are preventable; a simple heart check could save your life.” ‘Get a heart and diabetes check’ is the message going out to all New Zealanders in a campaign aimed at reducing these two major health issues which affect thousands of New Zealanders.

Diabetes (mainly type 2) affects 225,000 New Zealanders, and people with Type 2 diabetes are at a higher risk of heart disease.

To get your heart check your doctor or nurse will ask about risk factors such as smoking, exercise and diet and whether there is any family history of heart attack, stroke or diabetes.

Taken together with results from blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose level tests, they will advise you what your risk of heart disease or diabetes is

and what action you should take to cut it.

“Don’t just get your own heart checked,” says Sandy.

“Encourage family members, workmates and friends to do the same.”

September is the Heart Foundation’s ‘Go Red for Women’ month aimed at raising women’s awareness that they too are at risk of heart disease.

Often there are no obvious signs of heart disease in women – so it’s important they get a check.

Men often don’t make time for health checks and may need a gentle push from family.

Sandy says spread the word about heart checks.

“If every male in the Tauranga area had a heart and diabetes check and encouraged one work-mate or family member to do the same it could change the health of our community for the better.”

Raising awareness of heart health September is the Heart Foundation NZ’s ‘Go Red for Women’ month, raising awareness of heart health for women.

Statistics show about seven women each week die of heart disease, many of which have premature or preventable symptoms – so it’s important to realise we only have one chance at life. Hypertension is one of the main culprits causing heart disease with one in seven New Zealanders reportedly taking medication for high blood pressure.

Many of us indulge in a high salt diet and it

is very easy for us to exceed our daily recommended intake. Foods from tins and packets, processed meats and takeaways all contribute to excess sodium which in turn contributes to blood pressure increases.

Small changes such as eating more green leafy vegetables, fruit, wholegrain foods and low fat proteins while engaging in exercise can do much to reduce blood pressure naturally. Another culprit is saturated fat which is converted to cholesterol that builds up in our arteries, increasing our risk of heart disease.

Saturated fat is mainly from animal sources such as the fat on meat, in dairy and egg yolks.

Though, we do need some saturated fat in our diet, most of us need to significantly reduce the amounts we eat and replace it with unsaturated fats found in fish and plants such as walnuts, avocado and olive oil.

Just because food needs to be made healthy by reducing the fat, sugar and salt it does not need to be boring. Simply by adding flavours in the form of spices and herbs – or strong tasting vegetables such as garlic, ginger or chilli – we can make our food exciting

Alpaca-a-plenty in world conference Alpacas and their owners from all corners of the world will flock to Hamilton this weekend for the Alpaca 2013 World Conference and Expo.

To be held in New Zealand for the first time, and hosted by Alpaca Association New Zealand, the prestigious event is at Claudelands Conference and Exhibition Centre.

It will feature 500 alpacas – from spotted appaloosa to pristine white, fabulous blacks, beautiful browns and all shades in between.

AANZ member Sue Richards says the three-day event is an alpaca-lover’s dream and a thrill for the Kiwi association to host.

A highlight will be the International Fleece Show – when 400 lustrous, silky soft fleeces from across the globe will be judged to find the Supreme Fleece.

“They’re bred for their fleece.

Their fibre is just fantastic; it’s up there with cashmere.

It’s really soft, and luxurious and very sought after in the world market.”

There will also be a festival of stalls, from New Zealand and Australia, exhibiting and selling clothing, accessories, furnishings and curios made from the exotic animals’ fleece.

Animal lovers are encouraged to come along, meet and greet alpacas and their owners and enjoy the festival, open 9am-4pm today and tomorrow, and 9am-2pm on Sunday.

Dr Russell Ballard, independent chairman of the Plant Market Council of New Zealand, says research has shown that exports worth $23.3 billion when they leave this country sell for between $140billion and $200 billion.

He told the New Zealand and Australian Avocado Growers Conference in Tauranga this month that it’s a six fold value, which mostly goes to others and does not flow back to New Zealand producers.

“New Zealand must find the capital to get involved in the supply chain (off shore).”

“If doing so captured just 25 per cent extra in earnings that would equate to an additional return of around $60 billion,” he says.

The avocado industry is doing well with its growth but still faces issues, including the number of exporters competing with each other in markets. The Avanza brand model of co-operation between exporters in Asia is a positive step, he says.

Tsunami sirens:Left in limbo?

Do some Tauranga City councillors really believe tsunami and other disaster risks rank only 7th on the council’s priority list? Actually it is 3rd, do they also believe and that warning sirens and resident emergency exits out of Papamoa can be left in limbo?

While it is accepted the huge capital debt created and run up by Mayor Stuart Crosby and his team during the last six years is ratepayers and residents’ ‘number one’

concern, yet the current bunch have done nothing to address it.

The TCC staff audit fiasco has been canned, at a huge cost, with more staff added and would you believe even more to come?

Second on the hit list is drainage and stormwater remedial infrastructure works over the whole Tauranga area, estimated at $46m plus a further $24m to fix the Mount industrial area.

Although essential infrastructure, nothing has been done for more than 10 years.

And $70m is bad enough but wait for it – TCC councillor Bill Faulkner tells us that in the space of a few weeks the estimated cost has sprouted wings and shot up to $100m.

Frankly, existing councillors and council administration look incapable of getting anything right but Tauranga voters have a chance to correct that position now in upcoming October local body elections!

Having recently read an article by Brendon Horan on CEO salaries, I was staggered to see that the Western Bay Council CEO has a salary package of $385,000, including seven weeks holidays.

This is outrageous.

Too many of us in Katikati are burdened by heavy rates and there is no relief in sight. How on earth can Mayor Paterson justify paying a salary of these proportions?

Foreign help for Syria: not for ‘human rights’ US president Barack Obama and his Secretary of State John Kerry must privately be cussing over having been cornered by Russian President Vladimir Putin into accepting the agreement that has been hammered out regarding the destruction of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s chemical weapons.

Do a bit of research beyond the mainstream Western press and you will discover there is just as much likelihood, and indeed evidence, that it was the rebels (partly composed of the Syrian El Qaeda faction known as El Nusra), who employed the offending weapons.

The US has a long term goal of a disestabilised Middle East and is slowly and surely picking off the smaller fry before it tackles the big fish, Iran.

It has little to do with human rights and democracy.

The Western form of democracy won’t work in the Middle East because of all the tribal and religious differences within each country.

How are the people of Libya and Iraq

better off today than before the so called ‘Arab Spring’ swept through their countries with more than a little assistance from the West?

These countries are in tatters with sectarian violence running out of control; and more recently Egypt where a democratically-elected president is overthrown.

I believe the recent agreement regarding Syria is likely only a temporary set back for the West.

The foreign policy goals of the US remain, so don’t be surprised if there is a major engineered, for example ‘False Flag’, event that will give cause for direct Western alliance involvement.

An example could be in the form of an attack on Israel by the rebels, but of course engineered for the blame to fall on the so-called regime.

I’m no Assad sympathiser, just a truth seeker, but with news coming from a tightly-controlled foreign press, truth is an elusive quarry.

Voters must elect new faces

As an ex-Hamiltonian I have attended most meetings about our forthcoming local body elections and I am amazed at the lack of attendees, which explains why Tauranga has such a status quo mentality.

If it wasn’t for The Weekend Sun’s ‘Faulkner’s Corner’ column most Tauranga residents wouldn’t have a clue as to what is happening in our region.

Time for a change has never been more obviously identified than Mayor Crosby, and his councillors Moultrie, Baldock and Molloy, signing a memorandum of understanding for the $800,000 management of our sacred mountain Mauao in the death throes of this Tauranga City Council administration.

At a meeting of candidates this week, when asked what their

greatest achievement was while representing their city, one councillor couldn’t remember but referred us to their previous campaign brochure, typifying the lack of vision.

Come on Tauranga wake up to the need to elect new people with vision plus proven business skills to manage and control debt of our large local body business.

Perhaps Tauranga, led by Kelvin Clout and at least eight new councillors will make Tauranga the most liveable and progressive city in New Zealand.

Moaners vote or stop complaining Week after week and month after month we see letters to the local papers complaining about Tauranga City Council - the rates, the debt, the lack of this and that, etc. etc. Yet when the local body elections come round people can’t be bothered to go to the Candidates’ Meetings and become more informed on who to vote for.

Consequently, we seem to get many of ‘the same old lot’ back every time. And some of them have been there far too long.It

must be so disappointing for the candidates who make such efforts to attend and speak at these meetings only to find themselves facing a mere handful of people.

I was at the Mayoral forum at Holy Trinity - a venue that seats about 800, but with only 160 or so there. It was an informative well-run meeting and it was clear that each candidate wanted the very best for our city.

I was left with a more informed assessment of what skills each

would bring to the Mayoralty - which is important when deciding who to vote for, and I look forward to getting to hear the would-be councillors next.

If you can’t be bothered to see and hear the candidates maybe you don’t bother to vote either.

Well, don’t complain if there aren’t many fresh faces at City Hall for the next three years, and don’t grizzle when you get the outcomes you deserve.

Recognition is deserved for our volunteers

It has to be asked, what would one do without them? We love to hate them at times, but when you witness them at work the reporter, and the photographer, they really earn your respect, which must at times be a very trying occupation.

The public and the many organisations out there rely on them for communication. We have a raft of volunteers in our community, many do not get the recognition they deserve, time is the most valuable resource in life,

and this is given by so many people willingly, to make society a better place. It does not help when vital emergency services like St John are underfunded, which places an even heavier role on the volunteer, perhaps what is needed is volunteer MPs? The caring caller is but one free service that is offered by St John to anyone who feels lonely, which can be shattering for many people. To hear a happy voice can be wonderful.

They say the shortest distance between two people is a smile, and hey it costs nothing but it means the world. St John and the Red Cross have a Health Shuttle service to take people to medical appointments, which is also manned by volunteers.

This type of information shows once again, how important, the media is, and to the many thousands of volunteers out there well done.

We really want clear answers

I emailed all Mayoral, At Large and Otumoetai/Pyes Pa candidates and asked the question: ‘Would you please advise me whether you are for or against the transfer of the land at the Mount, where the hot pools and camping grounds are, to the local Maori?’

I sent 24 emails and got 14 replies.

One was for the idea and seven were against, with the rest neutral.

Only one was unequivocal, with the rest waffling on about needing more

information and other obfuscating reasons. The only clear conclusion I could draw was they would not give a clear answer.

And then they wonder why there is a low turnout at the elections.

I really would have thought that my question was a simple one. But I suppose for politicians that is asking too much. If they want my vote then they will have to do better than that.

As I prepare to vote in the local body elections I am asking myself should national-level party politics have a place in local politics? And secondly, should, like our nation’s court judges (who must retire at age 70), there be a retirement age for politicians local and national?

Local body politics in my view should be community-centred, focused on community needs. I agree with like-minded candidates uniting forces. They are not driven by party policies from a national caucus; they generally unite in the concern for community betterment. When receiving my voting papers I will be considering community issues as I vote and not candidates supporting a party line. Too often I see decisions made at national level that are driven by party politics rather than the people’s view. The vitalisation of an organisation is about the energy of the leadership team. Change sustains and vitalises organisational initiative and momentum.

Watching the America’s Cup has reminded me that Kiwis are constantly punching above our weight on the global stage. Sometimes we can be guilty of taking this for granted and not fully appreciating some of these remarkable achievements.

The marketer of kiwifruit recently won the Marketing Campaign of the Year award for the quality of its marketing programmes across Asia at the annual Asia Fruit Logistica & Asiafruit Congress event. This event is the leading trade exhibition for Asian fresh produce business and is attended by about 6000 top-level buyers and trade visitors from more than 60 countries.

Kiwifruit growers have faced unprecedented challenges during the last couple of years, and it is great to see the industry doing so well.

This achievement is not only a testament to the company, but also to all their growers and processors.

Boring upcoming election?

Dear Rapiti, The low turn out to the Meet the Candidates events is an indication of what can only be described as a ‘mimi pohara’ boring up-coming election.

More folks show up at an AA meeting than a meeting to choose who is going to look after the future of our children.

Perhaps The Weekend Sun can run a sweepstake. Whoever guesses the most correct candidates gets a

year’s free subscription and a free feed of Bobby Palmer’s fish n chips.

It’s a sad indictment on society when a catchy billboard can get you reelected onto city council and an ex-crooning news reading voice gets you back on regional council.

Both of these councilors are about as effective as a concrete keel on an America’s Cup yacht.

The only spark of excitement is the fresh faces standing for the Maori seats, on both local and regional council.

Maori should not fall into the trap of choosing a candidate

because he has a prominent history but has never stepped foot on many of the Marae here in Tauranga Moana.

How can he or she possibly know what our needs are?

Vote for your whanau sure, but only if they have been walking the talk for tangata whenua of Tauranga Moana and the wider Bay of Plenty region at a flax roots Marae level.

If you haven’t seen them in the last three years then don’t vote for them. Same goes for all candidates with or without flash billboards and fame from 40 years ago.

Lobby your candidates for shipping lanes Do we want a repeat of a Rena-type shipping disaster in our Bay of Plenty waters? No, we don’t.

Never again.

There is a solution and that is ‘Dedicated Shipping Lanes’ - demand candidates lobby for this.

As a candidate, I’ve been lobbying for this for several months. The jurisdiction of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council extends up to 50km offshore. So how do Dedicated Shipping Lanes help?

They mean careless captains cannot chart their

own route along our coast. It creates Shipping Traffic Control and a prescribed seaway, slso slowing ships - a small compromise.

Very successful Port of Tauranga is only going to increase in ship visits.

We need councillors that really care. This issue of Dedicated Shipping Lanes is one that we cannot afford to dilly-dally over - there is too much at risk for business and the environment.

Vote this election to stop history repeating I’ve attended virtually every organised Meet the Candidates forum held for Tauranga area’s local body elections for 2013.

Sadly the turnout by members of the community has been very poor with candidates out-numbering the public at most meetings.

I’m however hopeful the poor public turnout is actually due to the voters having already made up their minds who they’ll vote for.

It would be great to get a better turnout of voters than the low 43 per cent achieved in 2010 elections.

Regardless who you are planning

to vote for I do encourage you to vote. If you don’t we will only have more of the same we have experienced during the last three years.

This community has enormous financial issues it will have to address by a capable council.

Congregations are finding ways locally to nurture the lives of children and young people; and becoming involved in various schemes to tackle these complex social issues. As result, socks have been knitted for primary school children in Johnsonville, community outreach funds were gifted

to local children’s support groups, and Wesley College students have led a chapel service on the theme ‘Collusion not collision’ between the generations.

We know we are not alone, so to all who share this concern for the wellbeing of children and young people, let’s find ways to help end child abuse, poverty and youth suicide and ‘Let the Children Live’.

On the other hand, if you fancy some bluegrass-country-swing with a side order of gypsy jazz then make your way to the Te Puna Memorial Hall where you will find The Remarkables. They comprise three Auckland players, bluesman Neil Finlay, who sings and plays guitar, banjo player Bryan Christianson and double bass player Garry Trotman, augmented by Tauranga multi-instrumentalist Robbie Laven. The band had a great reception at this year’s Auckland Folk Festival, and Robbie says their sound has evolved a little since then.

“Since I started playing along they have fallen under the magic spell of gypsy jazz, excitingly fusing the commonalities of western swing, bluegrass and gypsy jazz.

The Remarkables are also off to the Whare Flat folk festival in Dunedin in December/ January and this concert will be a great dress rehearsal.”

Terry Pratchett’s comic adaptation of Macbeth created laughs and frights on the opening night of ‘The Wyrd Sisters’ at 16th Avenue Theatre on Monday night.

Three witches at home around their cauldron were delivered a baby from the Kingdom, who needed a new home far away where he wouldn’t be found.

A nervous Duke, with unruly staff and a pushy wife, became increasingly nervous as he discovered the child was hidden by the witches. What he really wanted was the crown of his late brother, the King. The witches were respected in the country and the Duke and

Margs Burt and Adam Fotherby play the witch Magrat Garlick and the fool in the Wyrd Sisters. his wife set out to tarnish their good name. Nanny Ogg, a lovely old witch, was kidnapped and about to be tortured when the two other witches came to her rescue. Soon realising they needed to stop the Duke, the witches decided the only way was to bring the boy back using strong magic – propelling him 15 years in the future to take his throne as the new King.

The audience really warmed to the witches – they had the theatre in stitches throughout the play. The King too was a very funny character. I couldn’t keep my eyes off the costumes – they were amazing and obviously tailored individually for each character. The pyrotechnics were unexpected even though we were warned of them – they created a fantastic and realistic atmosphere. Friendly theatre staff made us all very welcome and I look forward to my next visit.

STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS Starring: Christopher Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana - Dir: JJ Abrams Worst Star Trek Film Eva! That was the verdict of sad internet Trekkers (or Trekkies), showing either hysterical mob stupidity or collective mass amnesia. Can they really have forgotten Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier, starring and directed by the Fat Shat? Or, gulp, Star Trek: Insurrection?

Amongst the various pleasures on offer here are a classic liberal Gene Roddenberry argument against vigilante justice for terrorists, a spat about following the prime directive, and various philosophical positions as to how best to react to a potentially hostile foreign threat. Timely stuff.

There’re also playful and clever reinventions of Star Trek lore (allowed by the previous film’s alternative time-line set-up), plenty of Bones/

Scotty banter, and a real examination of the emerging Kirk/Spock friendship and what that whole emotionless logic thing is about for Spock.

It also looks absolutely fantastic, showing, in its earth-set scenes, a previously unseen side of Star Trek. And it has Benedict Cumberbatch on villain duties. Bruce Greenwood and Peter Weller provide cast gravitas. And Kirk fights Klingons!

Not enough – apparently – for internet Trekkies (or Trekkers), who dismissed it as just an action film. Oh yes, it also has great action, though too much for them, obviously. Yes, it does get a bit fighty from time to time, but this is sterling stuff, about as good a follow-up as anyone could have wished for. And Kirk fights Klingons!

Spring Breakers caused ripples of disapproval and shock in America, the same witless outrage as provoked

by Miley Cyrus's recent “scandals”. What do expect in a country where a nipple being almost visible at the Superbowl causes mass hysteria. The reason for the “shock” is that here a number of Disney princess types get their freak on and go topless and shoot people along with other earth-shatteringly antisocial behaviour. Basically the badass babes rob some money to party it up during spring break, before getting involved with James Franco's entertainingly hammy drug dealer. A splashy, vacuous, day-glo adventure, but you know it'll end in tears.

French director (and ex-cop) Olivier Marchal makes tough crime thrillers, his cops and crims skating blurred - Les moral lines. A Gang Story Lyonnais in France – is the (supposedly) true story of retired crim Momon of the infamous Lyon Gang. His quiet family life is rocked when childhood friend and fellow armed robber Serge (unretired) is arrested and he feels obliged to help. It’s great stuff, the tense modern day manoeuvrings play out against deft flashbacks showing the men’s friendship and criminal past.

Beautifully detailed, it’s as rich in character as the Godfather films with an added lashing of Gallic cool.

The Suspicion of Mr turns Whicher out to be an English television production. Which I thought might be a good thing since it stars the brilliant Paddy Considine and the equally brilliant new Dr Who Peter Capaldi. This was based on an apparently best-selling book and you can see how it might be better in that format. It’s a period piece in which the titular detective is sent to investigate a murder but, unable to convict his prime suspect is ruined both mentally and by the establishment. The pacing is near catatonic and the cast seem somnambulant.

Considine appears constantly depressed and Capaldi is barely in it. Yawn.

I had just about sworn off zombie films (yet again!) when a hip young thing recommended Warm Bodies , an – apparently – fresh take on the genre. So, once more unto the breach... And, I have to say, it was much better than yer usual undead fare, thanks to a self-aware and self-deprecating voice over from our zombie protagonist R (an excellent Nicolas Hoult). Unexpectedly he falls for a human girl and a sorta half-sweet romance follows. Things lag in the middle but with the welcome appearance of John Malkovich it picks up for an unusual and entertaining final stretch.

Hanging out with Ringo Starr would be a dream for every Beatles fan – but for Otumoetai resident Craig Wilson it’s ‘all in a day’s work’.

Okay, so it’s not every day Craig gets to hang out with a celebrity of such calibre, but promoting the annual ‘Mills Reef Stars Under The Stars’ concert has put many a ‘star’ in the 50-year-old’s path.

To name a few Graig has brushed shoulders with famous bands Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Hollies, singer Glenn Shorrock and tribute artists for Cher, Rod Stewart and Elton John.

It’s a bizarre array of career choices that has led to his current position, including work in television, radio, marketing, and the police force.

“They were all very different, but somehow together they combined to bring me here.”

Craig has been growing Mills Reef Winery’s Stars Under The Stars since 2003 – from its small beginnings it has transformed into two nights of sell-out events, gathering 6000 people.

This week Craig announced the line-up for 2014, featuring a 1980’s Kiwi classic theme including The Narcs, Andrew Fagan, Sharon O’Neill, Shona Laing, Margaret Urlich, Annie Crummer and Debbie Harwood.

“For me this is probably the best we’ve had yet.”

Outside of the Stars event, Craig works as the CEO for Bolton Promotions, organising tours for various artists, including Santana and Paul Simon’s South Island shows, Bonnie Raitt – and Craig’s personal career highlight – Ringo’s recent visit to New Zealand.

“I feel quite humble about it. There I am driving one of the Beatles around in my car, taking him to food stores in Auckland.

“He’s such a cool guy to talk to. He’s a really good guy.” During tours, Craig travels the country, organising everything from flights and accommodation, to food and music gear.

Outside of this, he works from home, enjoying the company of his wife and two young children – and revelling in the fact that for Craig, work isn’t really work at all.

“I just sort of think, how the hell did I get here?”

Unique, historical aircraft to visit Tauranga Replica aircraft of the WW1 era are expected at Tauranga City Airport for the Classics of the Sky – Tauranga City Airshow 2014 – on Auckland Anniversary weekend.

One of these aircraft, the Sopwith Camel, was immortalised by cartoonist Charles Schultz in his cartoon ‘Peanuts’ where Snoopy the dog sees himself as a WW1 flying ace and battles one of the best known fighter pilots of all times, Baron Manfred von Richthofen.

The list of WW1 replica aircraft possibly participating includes a

Sopwith Tri-plane, up to three Fokker Tri Planes, a Fokker D.VII, a Bristol Fighter, a Phalz D.II, a Sopwith Camel and a Nieuport II. As with all aircraft listed for the airshow, participation depends on weather and Crowds marvel at replica aircraft of availability. the WW1 era.
