Walking can add minutes to your life.

My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60. Now he’s 97 and we have no idea where the hell he is.

I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

The only reason I would take up walking is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.

I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I'm doing...

I joined a health club last year, spent about 250 bucks. Haven’t lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there!

Every time I hear the dirty word ‘exercise’, I wash my mouth out with chocolate.

I do have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.

The advantage of exercising every day is so when you die, they’ll say: ‘Well, he looks good doesn’t he?’.

If you are going to try crosscountry skiing, start with a small country.

I know I got a lot of exercise the last few years…just getting over the hill.

We all get heavier as we get older, because there’s a lot more information in our heads.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

And, every time I start thinking too much about how I look, I just find a pub with a Happy Hour and by the time I leave, I look just fine.

They’re a bunch of tittering, excitable schoolgirls – giggly and gossipy and talking over the top of each other.

Everyone talking, no-one listening and having a great time.

They’re the class of 1945 at Tauranga Primary School.

And on Wednesday – 70 years on – class was in again – and it’s been ‘in’ the same time each year for the last four years.

This hardcore gaggle of 18 from Miss Taylor’s Primer One gathered at a local restaurant to swap anecdotes and memories and pore over stills of the time.

But they were tippling sauvignon blanc instead of half-pints of milk on the turn. No more chalkboards, gingham skirts and cardies, only wonderful memories.

It seems nothing’s changed for these women. Okay – there are some age lines, lots of spectacles, they party at lunchtime now and grey bobs are part of the uniform.

But they still know how to have a good time.

“We all kept in touch through primary school and college and there was the odd birthday card and email,” says Margaret McClymont. “And when I suggested we do a small class lunch every year they were thrilled.”

But not a man in sight – surely there were boys in the class of 1945? They might have been smelly and horrible then, but now? Isn’t this sexist and exclusive?

“Well the girls decided to stick to girls because girls have more fun,” explains Margaret.

That’s half the reason.

“The boys are now either bald, boring or dead…or all three. That’s more to the point,” says Anne McGuinn, who flew in from Sydney for a “yack” and “a bite” with very dear old friends.

Anne’s the extroverted one apparently. “Not really a show-off but she stands out,” I was told. “But she’s lovely” is the quick qualification. We don’t want Anne coming all this way to be offended.

The years have scattered the class of 1945 from Tauranga to Rotorua, Hamilton, Auckland and beyond.

Some are still missing, uncontactable.

But Margaret sifts through Census and electoral rolls and each year throws up a couple of pleasant new surprises. Has anyone in the Class of 1945 achieved fame…perhaps notoriety?

Well Yvonne Sanders runs a flash antique dealership in Epsom in ‘Jafaland’ and is about to publish an equally flash book.

It doesn’t look like something you’d thumb through on the pillow though. Dulcie Artus is a local artist of some renown. Just a name like Dulcie Artus would be enough to make you famous.

And Margaret plays the Wurlitzer at Baycourt. But no notoriety you will note.

Car blaze after crash

An Otumoetai College student received treatment for facial injuries after he escaped from a vehicle along with a friend moments before it burst into flames in Bellevue on Wednesday.

Emergency services responded to reports of a car crashing into a power transformer on Princess Rd in the suburb.

Eyewitness Mere Kawaha-Brears said: “I jumped out of my car to help the boys get out”.

“I definitely think they were speeding but we do get a lot of the college students hooning up and down here.”

Employee jailed for $370K theft

Dionne Guinness, better known as Spotty, was the office lady at Sportcraft Marine for more than nine years, and that was all the time she needed to siphon $372,000 from the company.

She was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in jail when she appeared in Tauranga District Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to 11 counts of fraud.

“We treated her like family,” says Sportcraft Marine owner Jamie Black. “She had worked with us for nine years and had been stealing right off the bat.”

Tree protest set to fail

Attempts by a group of Matua locals to save a Ferguson Park pohutukawa tree have a hit a legal snag.

According to Tauranga City Council, they have no option but to cut down the tree at the request of a Waratah St resident who wants it removed.

A covenant put in place when the sections were originally purchased back in 1961 guaranteed uninterrupted views.

The developers of the Tilby subdivision, as it was then known, also donated the Ferguson Park land to TCC at the same time.

Accused pleads not guilty

The man accused of murdering Ilya Olegovich Kojevnikov earlier this month in an alleged hitand-run incident in Welcome Bay has pleaded not guilty.

Raymond Green, 32, was arrested following a short Police investigation into the death of the Russian national on Monday, February 2.

In Tauranga High Court on Wednesday, Justice Brewer set a trial date for September 28, 2015. A call over hearing of April 22 has also been set.

Ella’s Oceans inspiration For most reaching the pinnacle of junior surf lifesaving four times in a budding career is a feat but for Omanu’s Ella Pollock stepping out for a “lucky” fifth time is extremely special.

Next Thursday 800 of the country’s budding surf lifesavers descend on Mount Maunganui’s Main Beach, battling it out in Oceans 15.

Dubbed the pinnacle of junior surf lifesaving, the annual Under-14 New

Zealand Surf Life Saving Championships sees competitors aged 10-14 from 42 clubs take part in the four-day carnival.

Right in the thick of furious competition will be Pollock, intent on ending her longer than normal Oceans career on a high. A star beach sprinter and all-round athlete, who has medalled in all but one individual event and many team events during her ‘Oceans career’, she aims to compete in whatever she can despite a shoulder injury hampering preparations.

Fruit fly sparks surveillance call

The kiwifruit industry is calling for increased boarder surveillance following the trapping of a single male fruit fly in Auckland on Tuesday.

Kiwifruit Vine Health CEO Barry O’Neil says while one insect doesn’t constitute a risk to the industry, the discovery of a breeding population would.

“The Queensland fruit fly is the number one most unwanted pest for the kiwifruit industry and the trapping of a third insect in 13 months is of concern,” says Barry.

of entering Oceans a fifth competition, which is rare due to a lucky birthday date.

“It’s really cool to be there for five. It’s an amazing event and having a lucky birthday helps,” says the Mount Maunganui College student.

Last month Ella qualified as a lifeguard and is looking forward to stepping up to Seniors and giving back to her sport doing time on patrol.

“It [the left shoulder] just blew out last week. It just started hurting and getting sore and it got to the stage where I couldn’t turn on a light without it hurting.”

But she intends to push through the pain barrier – and hopes her added experience will hold her in good stead at clinching one or two titles one last time.

Looking back fondly on the event Ella says oceans, and the sport of surf lifesaving, is where friendships are formed for life and the pinnacle of the season always brings out the best in the athletes.

“You train hard and never know what the conditions will throw at you, giving it your best is the challenge.” Oceans 15 runs from Thursday, February 26 to Sunday, March 1 at Mount Maunganui’s Main Beach.

“Josh” went back to school last week in rag-tag uniform.

As his mum says it was “scraped together”.

He was still wearing the oversized and tattered shorts he wore last year and the over-sized shirts he also wore last year.

There was no new shoes or schoolbag – but he did have a refill pad, a pen and an over-riding urge to learn. It was the best this proud and determined mum could do.

“I will go without myself before my son’s education is compromised,” says Glenda.

“He will have everything I can possibly provide to make his schooling enjoyable.”

Heartfelt commitment from a struggling mum. But the reality is there won’t be much despite the scrimping and sacrifice.

It’s a simple equation of income versus outgoings and a boy’s

education, which she says is “an endless drain”.

Josh and Glenda – we agreed to first names to save face.

It’s not a one-off story about a family locked in the poverty trap – it’s symptomatic according to Tauranga Budgetary Advice Services.

There are literally dozens of Tauranga families struggling just below or just above the poverty line to pay for a “free” education.

The Weekend Sun has learned of families paying off a child’s school bus fare by instalments, a $5 weekly automatic payment to cover school expenses, living off food parcels so school fees can be paid.

Add to this the shame of crying out for help so children can be educated – something that’s a legislated right in NZ rather than a privilege.

“Back to school is always a critical time for any family,” says Tauranga Budgetary Advice Ser-

Tales of hardship flow from the files of an overwhelmed budgetary advice service, where families seeking help have soared 25 per cent this year – from 80 desperate families in 2014 to 102 last month.

A critical time for some families, and breaking point for others. “[I paid] $15 for a pair of school socks, just one pair because that’s all the money I had,” says pennywise Glenda.

Leanne to bring fresh approach to council Leanne Brown always harboured ambitions of running for Tauranga City Council at some point, it was just a matter of when the time was right.

But it was a matter of when she was ready to make the step up.

Even though I’m a Kiwi, people at school go ‘Oh you are Asian, you must be really smart’ like it runs through my blood or something.

But I’m just like anyone else, I have my strengths and weaknesses.

I’ve also learned from my school friends what the norms are for NZ kids and I’ve adapted to and grown from them.

For example, it never crossed my mind to take rice or other Chinese food to school. That’s ‘stay at home food’. Instead we take fruit and sandwiches and stuff from the supermarket.

Today I want to celebrate and share with you that important part of me that is Chinese. That’s the part telling me I should brush my

teeth before I eat breakfast. However, at school camp my friends look at me as though I’m an alien.

So when away from home I have to remember to brush after breakfast, and when at home vice versa.

So I split myself – with friends I’m a Kiwi but with my parents, grandma and family I’m Chinese.

And being Chinese is having New Year in February, which is the point of all this. Spring Festival or Chinese New Year is the most important traditional festival. In China they have eight days off work. But here in Tauranga we just weave it around work and school.

The Kiwi New Year is same time every year – midnight December 31 with lots of parties, drink and fireworks and is over pretty quick.

But Chinese New Year started

yesterday, February 19, and ends on March 5. We know how to party – two weeks is a proper New Year celebration I think.

Now this is the complicated bit.

For me, the Kiwi Alice Lin the year is 2015. But for the Chinese Alice Lin, the year is 4713. I’m not sure how it works out or who is right but it doesn’t matter.

The Chinese New Year is calculated according to the Chinese lunar calendar with each month beginning on the darkest day and ending when the moon is at its brightest.

So New Year is a different date each year but always between January 21 and February 20.

Sculptures connect Artist Regan Gentry with New Zealand Transport Agency senior project manager Wayne Troughton.

Two massive sculptures created by Kiwi artist Regan Gentry will be some of the largest public artworks to be displayed in New Zealand.

These sculptures will be installed at the Papamoa Gateway ahead of the official opening of the Tauranga Eastern Link later this year.

On one side of the road will sit a palisade pa structure measuring nine metres tall and stretching a massive 130m long, while on the other will be an eight metre tall spinifex.

The sculptures will be constructed from street light poles, roadside safety guard rails, and wood repurposed from the Coronation Pier.

Regan says he drew inspiration from the region’s environment, rich history, and even road safety and construction techniques.

“There were a number of obvious connectors for me,” says Regan. “From the numerous historic pa sites in the Papamoa Hills to the beautiful beach, the importance of the Port of Tauranga and the products such as wood that will travel on the TEL there.”

“To me, part of building the TEL was to improve road safety in the area and when you look back at the idea of the pa, that was also to keep the community safe,” says Regan.

“I wanted to unite the natural and manmade environment and help personalise the location so people really connect with it as they are travelling through.”

The $200,000 project is funded by the NZ Transport Agency and Bay of Plenty Regional Council, while Tauranga City Council has donated wooden poles repurposed from the Coronation Pier.

Art lovers and interested locals can also learn more about Regan’s project when, he speaks at the Public Art Talks Tauranga event at Baycourt X Space this Saturday from 11am. Entry is via donation.

Then on Friday, February 27, the Bayleys Tauranga Show Jumping Championships starts 9am daily to Sunday, March 1 – all free to the public.

Sally says the aim of show jumping is to jump a clear round – but there’s no horsing around, as it takes much more effort than just sussing the course.

“There’s a lot of training at home and horses are a 24-hour seven days a week thing – not something you can put in the cupboard when you’re not using.”

“So it’s not just the riding, it’s the care, maintenance and training of the horse.”

Going in the ring, Sally says every show has a different course designer, fences and surroundings “so you can’t practise the actual course you’re going to jump”.

Between Sally and husband Phillip, they take up to 10 horses between them to a show.

“At different ages or stages and their level of preparation each horse jumps in a different class.”

Sally likes show jumping when everything is prepared well, the horses have good ground to jump on and fences and course. “It makes huge difference to the rider. And it’s satisfying when you carry out a plan on the horse and it’s successful.”

With stables and an arena at home, Sally lives and breathes horses while looking after her two children.

“They like the jumping, but don’t like brushing them.” With more than 500 horses and riders nationwide on their way to Tauranga for next week’s events, Sally says onlookers will get to see action-packed, high jumps. “It’s an exciting sport to watch and if you have nothing to do with it, it’s interesting.”

School’s cosy comfort Winter is looking pretty snug and cosy for Maketu Educare and its children as it happily pulls up its newly installed ‘big blankets’ of insulation.

This week Smart Energy Solutions set about installing insulation in the Maketu kohanga reo building as part of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority’s home insulation scheme in the Western Bay of Plenty.

Run since 2006, in conjunction with TECT’s annual $400,000 grant, each year 420 pre-2000 homes are insulated in the district with EECA matching TECT’s figure.

And as a goodwill gesture on Smart Energy Solutions’ part, they insulate a ‘community house’ each year for free – endorsed by TECT that is a home providing a service to the community.

“We are pretty stoked. It will definitely keep the children warmer in winter because it’s an older building,” says Maketu Educare head teacher Kelsi Lawrence.

Dating back to an estimated the early 1900s, the centre’s building within the confines of Maketu Primary School not only wasn’t insulated but in recent times has seen small cracks begin to appear in the walls and floor, posing a problem in colder months.

Maketu Educare is a non-profit community based charitable trust set up to provide pre-school education for young children in the local rural community.

Kelsi, who stepped foot in the building 27 years ago as a child herself, says to combat the winter chill the centre has a heat pump with teachers coming in early to warm up rooms ahead of the children’s arrival, and it

Our children will be nice and cosy.

“We were really stoked because that was one thing we really needed; insulation.

“The kids called them big blankets [of insulation].”

TECT operations and grants manager Paula Hudson says it’s fantastic to be able to

help out the Maketu community and offer some much-needed warmth heading into winter.

In the past Smart Energy Solutions’ goodwill gesture has seen Homes of Hope and the Tauranga Nightshelter insulated.

Exhibition gears up for Gallipoli Following a highly successful first six months, being viewed by more than 5000 people at six locations, Tauranga’s World War I mobile exhibition is now undergoing a major revamp to mark this year’s 100th anniversary of the 1915 Gallipoli landings this April 25, 2015.

The new display naturally focuses on experiences of NZ troops during the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign, where they fought alongside Australians as part of the Australia New Zealand Army Corps, known as the ANZACs. Organised by the Tauranga Heritage Collection in conjunction with

WW100 Tauranga Committee, the free exhibition is housed in two specially modified shipping containers so it can be readily transported to various sites.

Officially opened last August to coincide with the centenary of the start of WWI, it’s so far been located for various lengths of time at Tauranga’s Masonic Park in the central city, at Tauranga Girls’ and Tauranga Boys’ colleges, Mount Maunganui RSA, Tauranga RSA and more recently, the Tauranga A&P Show.

"The updated display will include many fascinating images from Gallipoli, and include material which relates to experiences of soldiers who enlisted locally,” says WW100 Committee secretary Fiona Kean.

“There will be a detailed timeline for the campaign and exhibits that include

both Turkish and New Zealand uniforms and other items of equipment.”

The modified exhibition will be open to the public in downtown Tauranga for two weeks in early April then shift to Mount Maunganui as one element of a free, month-long, expanded WWI display at the Classic Flyers Museum in Jean Batten Drive.

Fiona says it’s planned to take the container exhibition to Te Puke and other locations throughout the Western Bay of Plenty in future.

During the next three years displays will be updated, as appropriate, to highlight New Zealand’s involvement in different phases of the 1914-1918 Great War.

Tauranga Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Lemoto, host of ‘Police Ten-7’, is getting behind Papamoa’s stand against domestic violence.

Family Violence – ‘It’s not ok, and it’s ok to ask for help’ is the message Papamoa will be shouting from the rooftops as the community embarks on its antidomestic violence campaign next month.

The March Against Family Violence Papamoa, Family Violence – It’s not ok and Papamoa – It’s ok to ask for help – is being rolled out in Papamoa on March 1 with a family fun day.

Community Family Violence co-ordinator Heather Beddie says it will be the first area in the Bay of Plenty to become a community where the responsibility of doing something about family violence is owned by the community.

“We have our new MP Todd Muller involved, Mayor Stuart Crosby is involved, the Police are heavily involved alongside many of the community organisations, including sports and services clubs “Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Lemoto, host of ‘Police Ten-7’, is becoming a champion of the cause.”

Heather says the surf club is also involved along with many other sports clubs, Papamoa Plaza and other community organisations and businesses.

People are stepping up and saying: “Actually we can do something about this as a community”.

“We are rolling the campaign out on March 1 with a march in Papamoa and then there will be a family fun day where all the domestic violence agencies will be raising awareness and they will also have family things for families to do,” says Heather.

“Where this has happened in other areas in New Zealand, their domestic violence rates have dropped quite dramatically and this is an attempt from us, in partnership with the ‘It’s Not Ok’, to actually do something about our domestic violence rates.”

Heather says domestic violence rates here are no higher or lower than any other area.

“The only difference is Papamoa is doing something about it. That’s the magic phrase really.”

The march will be on the grass behind McDonalds at Papamoa, beside Papamoa Plaza from 9am-12 noon on March 1.

“We’re also going to have billboards up as you drive into Papamoa with the champions’ faces on it,” adds Heather.

“It’s not me, it’s not any one agency, it’s the community saying we can do something about family violence.”

“Sustainable Backyards provides the perfect opportunity to highlight important issues and ask the public for their input,” says coordinator Tania Bramley.

Envirohub Bay of Plenty has organised two key events during Sustainable Backyards to bring carbon emissions to the forefront.

The off-the-grid event powered by solar electricity – Envirofest – at Mount Maunganui on February 28 launches the 10th anniversary of Sustainable Backyards, with headline

speakers from national organisations Generation Zero and 350.org.

Two workshops on carbon options for Tauranga and divestment from fossil fuels will be held.

Following Envirofest, a film screening and panel discussion on carbon options for Tauranga will be held at the Wesley Centre on March 10 from 7pm.

Organised by local concerned citizens with support from Envirohub, the movie night will present Al Gore’s presentation at the recent Davos World Economic Forum meeting out-

lining the science, the challenges, and the achievements.

This will be followed by two short clips on progress in other cities including Copenhagen, and some of the technologies involved. The panel discussion will include representatives from council, community, business and youth.

Public feedback from both events will form part of a submission to councils to address carbon control.

How to look after the region’s air quality Air is essential for life and poor air quality affects people’s health.

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council is responsible for managing the region’s air quality.

The challenge is to balance the protection of our air quality with the impacts of development.

National Environmental Standards for Air Quality were introduced by the Government in 2004 and it is the regional council’s responsibility to ensure these are met.

It does this through the development and imple-

mentation of a Regional Air Plan. A review of the current Bay of Plenty Regional Air Plan is programmed for this year.

To kick off the process, council will shortly be releasing a recent review of the Regional Air Plan, which contains recommendations on changes which could be made to make it more efficient and effective.

At the same time, staff will begin drafting a new Regional Air Plan, based on results of the review and feedback from stakeholders.

Indications are that substantial change will be required, particularly in the methods for implementation.

Doug’s third cut for child cancer I tell the story often because a very brave 12-year-old made me feel so completely inadequate.

Her name was Sally and she was terribly sick with cancer. Big blue saucers for eyes, a shiny bald nut and cheeky as all hell. She looked up at me from her Starship Hospital bed and hit me with a thunderbolt. “You know, I am not coming out of hospital.”

That was always understood, but

it was never said. I had conveniently blacked out the reality – mortality doesn’t sit comfortably with me. And Sally was a child after all. But Sally was under no illusion.

Awkward moment

Regardless, it was my most awkward moment ever. She delivered the line and fixed me with an expectant stare.

I’m sure she was testing me, searching for an iota of hope perhaps.

I gave Sally the “never say never” routine. “Even really sick people get better” or some equally inane line. Then she smiled and pointed to her chemically-induced bald head. It was her signal she wanted a kiss. I planted that kiss and threw in a lingering bear hug – was it for me or was it for her? Either way it was the least I could do.

Thankfully my Sun Media colleague Doug Britton doesn’t have a ‘Sally’ story...he’s never been touched by cancer.

But he does have three girls, Lyla, seven, Cerys, five, and Sidney, two, and now he shares my respect, love and admiration for another kid called Sally, who taught this adult a life lesson.

A luffa or a loofah?

It’s big, green, long and heavy – and it’s grown organically in a Papamoa garden.

Ranjit Kaur and husband Sulakhan Singh haven’t seen anything in the supermarkets as big as their luffa. It’s a type of tropical and subtropical vine classified in the cucumber family.

How big is it exactly? “It’s like a three-year-old child’s leg,” laughs Ranjit.

Although when it was brought into The Weekend Sun newsroom, everyone agreed it looks more like the size of a grown man’s thigh. It’s heavy too. “About three kilograms,” says Ranjit.

You’d suspect a giant-sized vegetable to have been pumped with steroids – but not this luffa. Ranjit proclaims Sulakhan grows the vegetable organically in their backyard.

“We don’t use any fertiliser.”

This is the ninth giant luffa their garden has produced, along with other large vegetables including capsicum and watermelon. But they’re not as impressive as the luffas.

According to Wikipedia, the vegetable must be harvested at a young stage of development to be edible.

They are not frost-hardy and require as many as 200 warm days to mature.

The fruit section of a fully matured luffa, once processed and dried, is the source of the loofah.

That’s the scrubbing sponge, which is used in the shower or kitchen.

Apparently luffas are best eaten when small – less than 12cm – and green. Perhaps Ranjit and Salukhan’s gigantic luffa should stay in the garden and not on the plate?

Ranjit disagrees. “Peel it, fry it up with onion or slice it thin and steam it,” she says.

One is enough to feed their entire family, so Ranjit shared one with The Weekend Sun and plans to gift the others to her friends.

Beans, beans and more beans Green beans. They grow faster than we can eat them. So what do we do with the leftover beans? How do we store them until we’re ready to eat them?

Store unwashed fresh bean pods in a plastic bag kept in the refrigerator.

Whole beans stored this way should keep for about seven days.

Many people wonder about freezing the beans. This is a good idea, but it’s important to remember the longer the freezer time – the lesser the nutrients. It’s suggested to limit the freezer storage to about three months.

Freeze preparation

Rinse your green beans in cool water and drain. Cut the ends of the beans off and cut the beans to whatever length you prefer.

Put the beans into boiling water, cover the pot and boil them for three minutes.

Remove the green beans from the boiling water and immediately plunge them into a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking. Keep them in the ice water for three minutes. Drain well.

Put the green beans into a reusable airtight freezer containers or zip lock freezer bags. Make sure you get as much air out of the container or zip lock bag as possible, to help prevent freezer burn.

Digging beneath the soil When it comes to gardening, Bay of Plenty growers Gordon and Sue Boyd of Little River Organic Farm say there’s a life beneath the soil.

Instead of focusing on what’s on top – Sue and Gordon encourage growers to dig deeper under the surface and look after their soil first.

“Good healthy soil will produce good healthy plants,” says Sue.

Certified organic growers, Sue and Gordon grow vegetables naturally in their garden nestled against the Kaimai Forest Park up Woodlands Rd, 10km south of Waihi.

They grow off-the-grid, with a micro-hydro system.

“It was a dream to be self-sustainable,” says Sue. “We try and grow things that are different and colourful and catch people’s eye – or old fashion vegetables we think will still taste really yummy and people should try.”

They’ve been growing organically for about four years. It’s their livelihood and now their main source of income.

“I firmly believe that we’ve got to get away from the sprays and chemical fertiliser. It’s not necessary. We can grow good quality produce without all that input.”

They’re efforts have awarded them overall winners of the Summer Producers section in the Farmers Market New Zealand 2015 Awards.

They also won an overall prize in the organic section for their five varieties of heritage potatoes and runnerup for their golden beetroot.

Kowiniwini, urenika, whataroa, koryo and pink fir were the winning potatoes – but Sue believes the judge’s pick of the crop was the urenika.

“The urenika is that lovely blue one that looks pretty spectacular in a plate of mashed potatoes or in a roasted vege mix.”

They also entered the biggest, fattest, golden beetroot they could find.

“It’s really sweet and it doesn’t bleed into salads,” says Sue. “You have them raw and they’re slightly softer when they cook up but they’re just as nice as the red I think.”

Off to market

Sue and Gordon venture from their farm to the Tauranga Farmers Market every Saturday.

“We wake up our cows to move them and throw the chooks some food in the dark and off we go,” says Sue. Celebrity chefs will judge the winter producers and value-added producers from throughout New Zealand’s farmers markets in Tauranga on June 20, with final awards presented at the FMNZ Awards at Classic Flyers on July 17.

Fire permits suspension reinstated Another dose of hot, dry weather has forced the Western Bay Moana Rural Fire Authority to once again place a suspension on all open air fire permits.

Principal Rural Fire Officer Alan Pearce says despite some rain current conditions have made it too dangerous to light open air fires.

The Drought Code index has increased rapidly and has reached a point where burning is unsafe, says Alan.

The authority is now actively considering imposing a total fire ban, as part of its safety strategy if conditions don’t improve within the week.

“We need a good quantity of rain to alleviate the fire danger.”

As result, all open air fire permits are suspended in the Western Bay of Plenty District and Tauranga City.

Alan is also asking current permit holders to refrain from

open air burning when possible.

He also wishes to remind people any fire is the responsibility of the person causing it, and they can be liable for the often very costly efforts to suppress uncontrolled wild fire.

Topping up Troy’s bucket list Imagine planning a bucket list at age 19. Tauranga’s Troy McVeigh is writing his. He has a rare muscle cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma and it’s incurable.

His 24-year-old sister Jessica McVeigh wants to raise $10,000 for her “baby brother” to tick off some of his wishlist before she has to say goodbye.

“I just want him to be able to do the few things that make him happy,” says Jessica. “It’s what we all want.”

He’s been on a glider

flight and has been able to purchase his dream car – an RX7 – with the funds raised so far. Rotary specialists Green Brothers Racing Ltd built him one for cheap.

“It’s a bit expensive to run and of course he wants a bigger engine for it,” says Jessica. So that’s what she’ll aim to get him.

Troy was feeling ill about a week before the cancer was confirmed at a medical centre in Te Puke on July 9 last year, when a CT scan showed lumps in his groin, pelvis and lower back.

After months of chemotherapy, the cancer has begun progressing after six weeks of finishing treatment.

Maori health scheme open

Applications are now being taken for the Maori Health Development Scheme 2015/2016, with Health Minister Jonathan Coleman saying it works to increase capacity and capability of Maori health and disability providers.

“The scheme is allocated $8.89 million each year, which is spread over two programme areas – Maori health and disability provider development, and Hauora Maori Scholarships.”

Maori health and disability providers have used the funding to improve infrastructure, achieve service integration, improve the quality of services and develop workforce skills.

The Hauora Maori Scholarships assists a minimum of 535 people annually, who study in a range of fields such as nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, physiotherapy and social work.

In 2014 the medical category alone awarded 147 Maori medical students scholarships – an increase of 50 per cent since 2009.

A portion of the 2015/2016 funding is committed in multi-year contracting agreements signed in 2013/2014. Information and applications forms are at www.health.govt.nz.

Feet healing fraternity bound in red tape Feet are notoriously the most neglected part of the human body –now they’re causing a professional stink all the way from Tauranga to the corridors of power in Wellington.

But “the application must meet the threshold for demonstrating public safety and the benefits to clients”.

“It’s the same old story,” says Stefan. “They just say ‘Yes, yes, yes. It’s very important and we need to put it in review and audit’. But it’s all happened, it’s all been done, there is nothing left to do!”

Podiatrists, the foot doctors, are demanding the right to prescribe antibiotics to us, the patients, to save us time, inconvenience, stress and above all money, lots of money. Tauranga podiatric surgeon Stefan Edwards says “being nice and gentlemanly about it has passed and it’s time to shout. It’s time to cut through the redtape bull****”.

Strong talk, strong language from the traditionally reserved medical profession. And Stefan is shouting about what he calls: “This bit of nonsense, this bit of hypocrisy”.

Antibiotics

When we go to the podiatrist with our corns, calluses, ingrown toenails and fungal infections they can perform an initial procedure, do an x-ray and give a local anaesthetic – but they cannot prescribe antibiotics, which are crucial to the treatment process.

Then, says Stefan: “We have to bundle you down the road where the GP clicks the ticket – prescribes antibiotics we have already recommended and then charges you $40 or $60 for the privilege”.

And he claims patients just might get to see a GP “who’s had as much experience with foot surgery as I have servicing the space shuttle”.

The “nonsense” continues.

“The patient returns to the podiatrist for the surgery and then quite possibly back to the GP for a further course of antibiotics – and, of course, another fee.”

The time, effort, inconvenience – and particularly the expense – is unnecessary according to Stefan.

The Ministry says the podiatrists should apply via their responsible authority under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act, which in this case is the Podiatrists Board of New Zealand.

It’s watchdog organisation looking after the interests of podiatry patients. And the Ministry would consider the podiatrists’ case if and when they receive an application.

But Stefan again says the submissions, work and evidence in support of the podiatrists has been undertaken and completed. It even has the backing of the pharmacologists. “In my opinion the current Podiatrists Board is, at best, unable to complete what is essentially a ‘lick the stamp and resend’ task.”

Somehow, somewhere Stefan says the podiatrists’ case is in the system, waiting to be actioned. And it’s costing his patients. Stefan’s colleagues in Australia and England have the right to prescribe. “My international colleagues look at me and say ‘Come on guys, sort it out’.”

Stefan’s Tauranga practice gives $67,500 worth of trade a year to local GPs. “They’re delighted with the legislation as it is. They’d rather have patients rock up and pay $45 for a prescription.

They don’t want us

prescribing. They wouldn’t want to lose my business.” Stefan says he’s even helps GP’s with their work. “I pick up the phone and tell a GP my patient has an infection and they’ll ask what antibiotic I recommend. They will say : ‘Okay, I will send you a prescription’.”

Successive Governments have agreed to sort it, says Stefan. But not one has.

Tauranga’s girl racer consistently surprises Less than two years since graduating to the top national drift racing competition, Jodie Verhulst is continuing to surprise with her consistent form.

While the Tauranga driver, who goes by the nickname ‘Ms Drift’, is used to upsetting a few in the male-dominated motorsport, her eighth place ranking has come as a personal surprise.

“It’s a little bit unexpected because I haven’t made it to the top four or eight,” says Jodie.

“I’m sure it’s because of my consistent driving,

which helped me qualify quite high at ASB Baypark.”

While Jodie knows she’s seen as a role model for other women competing in male-dominated areas, she’s not letting her ranking – up from 18th last season – go to her head.

“I’ve still got so much to learn, but now that I’m up there I’m determined to do everything I can to make sure that I finish the season in the top 10.”

Jodie will return to the track at Hampton Downs for round four of the six-round season this weekend in her Toyota Supra which, with a new V8 engine and improved chassis, is more competitive this season.

Blues brothers’ bash “It was a no-brainer,” says Tauranga aluminium fabricator Glenn Wilson, about the decision to join the annual Variety Bash charity rally next month.

“We had so much fun. It was great to see all the kids’ smiles and to really make a difference,” says Glenn, who received his introduction to Variety’s

Together with Opotiki mate Hori Lack he collected an aging ex-rental car in Christchurch, which they drove to Hokitika and Greymouth, then back on a three-day trip stopping at communities along the way to shake donation buckets, hand out cheques and get stuck into hands-on projects.

“We have a working bee project when we get to Tauranga so it will be great to help make a difference here,” says Glenn, who’ll be joined by three friends in the Blues Brothers team in their old Ford stretch limousine which has been repainted as an NYPD police car.

The team’s fundraising quest is underlined with signwriting on the car clarifying the NYPD stands for ‘Need Your Precious Donation’.

“We’ve got flashing flights and a siren under the bonnet. It really looks the part,” says Glenn, who with team mates will dress up in NYPD police shirts, hats, board shorts and jandals.

The Blues Brothers, along with fellow Tauranga teams Every Little Boys Dream and Kidicorp (formerly `The 8th Tribe’), will begin the Variety Bash at New Plymouth on March 6.

The teams will cover about 1000km on the 25th anniversary bash, wending their way around the North Island, through Wellington and Tauranga, before finishing in Warkworth eight days later.

Glenn says the Tauranga teams support each other, but still have a little cheeky rivalry “to make it fun”.

Among the other teams is Glenn’s 19-year-old son Mark, who is part of the Every Little Boys Dream team.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on display this Easter The original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car from the 1968 movie ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ will be exclusively loaned from owner Sir Peter Jackson to go on display at Warbirds & Wheels Wanaka this Easter.

The fantastic flying and driving machine will only be on display at

Warbirds & Wheels at Wanaka Airport from April 1-30, coinciding with Easter school holidays and offering affordable fun for all the family during the break.

This will be the first time the car has been on display for such a period of time, having only been seen in public a couple of times at key air shows and on Wellington streets with Sir Peter behind the wheel.

“We’re incredibly excited to have Chitty here with us for the month,”

says Warbirds & Wheels director Robert Duncan.

“The movie and car are a fond childhood memory for many of us and to have her on display in the attraction is a dream come true.”

Robert says it’s incredibly generous of Sir Peter Jackson to loan Chitty, with his love of the car well documented.

“Not only will people be able to see Chitty and read about this great car, it will enable us to raise funds for local charity Upper Clutha Children’s Medical Trust, which is a cause very close to our hearts.”

“There were several Chitty Chitty Bang Bang cars made for the film, but only one that actually worked. This is that car – known as GEN11.”

‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ was a musical movie legend played in homes worldwide for more than 50 years.

“We only

have Chitty for one month so we encourage people to make the most of this great opportunity to get up close with her,” says Robert.

Designed by Ken Adam and built by the Ford Racing Team, it’s powered by a Ford three-litre V6 engine and has a dashboard plate from a British World War I fighter plane.

Chitty was completed in 1967 and registered with the number plate GEN 11, given to her by Ian Fleming, who wrote the novel the film was based on.

The registration spells the Latin word ‘genii’, meaning magical person or being.

GEN 11 was owned by Pierre Picton of the UK and bought by Sir Peter Jackson in 2011 and shipped to New Zealand.

Robert says there will be lots of exciting and interactive ways for

locals and visitors to get up close with Chitty during the month, including an artist in residence week, movie showings, dress-up ‘cars over coffee’ day, a children’s colouring competition as well as movie memorabilia for sale, diner specials and much more.

“It really is a unique and oncein-a-lifetime opportunity,” says Robert.

Another highlight of the car collection is the 1934 Duesenberg Model J car previously owned by Hollywood actress Carol Lombard, who was married to Clark Gable, as well as the best restored collection of Packards in the country.

Luke’s big pitch for a job I don’t want your sympathy, I want your understanding.

I don’t want your money, I want the benefit of your wisdom. I don’t want hand-outs, I do want a hand up – I want you to help me help myself.

That’s how Luke Bright’s CV would probably read, that would be his pitch to a prospective employer should he luck an interview.

They are the words of a man who desperately wants a job…or job experience.

And Luke hopes with all the upbeat talk about the job market in Bay of Plenty, there might be a slot for him; an opportunity with an employer who recognises his potential and will take a chance.

There’s a “but”… and in Luke’s case it’s a big “but”.

He’s epileptic. He suffers ‘electrical storms’ in the brain. It’s a curse for Luke, but a manageable curse.

For the uninitiated, a ‘grand mal’ or ‘tonic-clonic’ seizure can be “scary”. Luke, for example, can lose consciousness and suffer violent muscle contractions.

Sometimes he recovers immediately, other times he needs bed and rest.

“But it does not mean I am incapable, incompetent or an idiot. It does not mean I cannot work.”

And there’s payback, some incentives for the wouldbe employer.

“I will work for nothing. And I will work as long and as hard as I need to learn some skills to make myself productive.”

Luke is on a $300 a week benefit – but he doesn’t want to be on hand-outs and he doesn’t like talking about it. He wants to be useful and pay his own way.

It’s a commendable work ethic but one which employers haven’t embraced…not yet.

Luke has a forceful PR team on his case – Mum Jo gave up her job eight months ago to help Luke in his search for a job.

“I’ve been knocking on doors all over town but those

doors just slam shut.” For example, she went to the Salvation Army – no, they only take schoolleavers.

She went to The Men’s Shed – no, they only take men 65-plus.

It’s so frustrating,” says Jo. But a career in marketing has served her well – she’s leaping into print, advertising for an unpaid training opportunity for Luke.

“Help me to help you,” the ad goes.

Luke suffered encephalitis, inflammation of the brain, as an 11-year-old and that’s when the seizures started.

Today, 20 years later, Luke is a tall, lean, proud and handsome young man – but life dealt him a cruel blow and he’s still a bit stunned and against the ropes. The head drops.

“I get annoyed and depressed because no-one’s taking me seriously, no-one’s taking me on. I have so much time to sit around and worry about myself.

“That’s a sure fire recipe for another seizure.”

Financial literacy for youth and beyond Financial Literacy is becoming a hot topic – not only on the agenda for the Government and Ministry of Education but more importantly for the average consumer.

And let’s not forget the future generation of consumers.

Growth, legacy, and doing business better Tauranga City Council’s draft rates and debt forecasts for the next 10 years were released on Monday. Let’s see what are triggering costs.

There are three issues I believe are driving council’s focus for the next 10 years.

They are successfully managing growth, addressing legacy issues, and a focus on doing business better.

Firstly, council is being inundated with building consents applications.

These levels are approaching the peaks experienced during the property boom in 2007. This is before the first house has been built under Tauranga’s new Special Housing Accords. Council has long had a philosophy that growth pays for growth, as people moving here should

pay for the extra infrastructure they will directly benefit from via development contributions.

But Council has to fund the depreciation and maintenance as soon as the assets are installed.

These, and other growth-related costs, will add about 2.5 per cent onto rates next year alone.

There are also legacy issues council is dealing with. These include our ICT, stormwater issues, and finally resolving Council’s leaky building. I want to stop creating more legacy issues for future generations to address.

I fully support council’s focus on doing business better. We’re following other industries by encouraging more people to conveniently interact with council online, so there’s fewer queues when you need to pop into council’s reception.

Lotti out of luck

Warning signs up at waterhole access Trustpower has delivered on its promise.

New warning signs have been thrown up around the access way to the enormously popular Poripori Rd waterhole at the foot of the Kaimai Range.

The signs warn visitors of irregular and potentially dangerous waterflows, particularly on Sundays, when Trustpower releases water for the whitewater rafters and kayakers.

The river can rise from a trickle to a torrent in 20 minutes.

One woman from Hamilton was swept downstream.

Her family lost everything in the rising water water, including their car keys.

The new warning signs are bigger, bolder, doublesided and are situated so everyone has to walk past them. They tell visitors: “Water levels will rise rapidly on Sundays from 10am September through to May”.

She was found with her foot crunched in a gin trap and she’s lost a couple of toes.

But she’s running around “like a mad thing” now, thanks to the caring animal-loving heart of Tauranga’s Andi Faulkner.

Andi was camping with her brother Bill and other family members at Lottin Point, East Cape, when her daughter Morgane found a grey tabby kitten hanging by its back leg from a gin trap at a deserted home in the bushes.

“It was pretty awful,” says Andi, who kept the 14-week-old kitten at their camping spot overnight. She’s named the kitten Lotti after Lottin Point.

Lotti seemed fine in the morning but Andi didn’t want to leave her alone.

“I was scared she wasn’t going to do well.”

So she drove two hours to the nearest vet in Opotiki, where Lotti stayed for a week and had toes amputated.

On their way home to Tauranga, Andi paid $250 for the vet’s troubles

Call her efforts kind and Andi bashfully declines. “No, no you’ve just got to do it don’t you”.

The trouble is, Andi already has a cat.

A very elderly cat with diabetes. His name is Max. Max and Lotti don’t get along.

“He’s just beside himself. He’s had a few stressful moments but I’ve just got to keep them separated.”

Now, Andi is looking for a new home for Lotti. She’s contacted the Animal Rescue Rehabilitation Centre and SPCA but understands neither can help.

“It’s a busy time for homeless kittens at the moment.”

Andi is offering to have the kitten spayed before it’s re-homed. If worse comes to worse, Andi will keep Lotti.

“But I’d really like to find her a loving home where there’s no stress for it. She’s had an awful start.”

As for the gin trap, that’s been disposed of.

SOUP Tzatziki soup Ingredients 1kg waxy potatoes, peeled and diced 1 cup dill, chopped ½ cup chopped mint 1 medium white onion, chopped 2 small garlic gloves, crushed 50g butter 1 large telegraph cucumber, sliced and de-seeded and cut into half-moon shapes Cracked black pepper and sea salt flakes 500ml chicken stock 200ml plain Greek yoghurt Method Place the potatoes, crushed garlic, chopped onion, chicken stock, mint and dill stalks in a pot and bring up to a simmer.

Cook for about 20 minutes until the potatoes are soft enough for mashing. Set pot aside to cool.

Whiz up the yoghurt and herbs and process until smooth and slightly green then set aside in fridge until later, leaving a little mix in the food processor.

Add potato mix to the processor with a slotted spoon, add butter and process until smooth scraping down the bowl as you go.

With the stock left in the pan, heat and add cucumber slices heat in the stock and discard any twiggy bits of herb.

Cook for just two minutes so the cucumber is still crisp.

Remove from the heat and stir in the potato mix and allow to cool. Add the yoghurt and season with cracked fresh black pepper and sea salt and chill well for three-four hours.

Serve with sprigs of fresh dill and sliced cucumber – it’s delicious with crusty-style breads.

You can easily transform the simple vegetable into something quite sublime by adding dill, garlic, mint and yoghurt to shredded well-drained cucumber.

You can make the addictive Tzatziki dip. Or you could try combining thinly-sliced cucumber, dill seeds, finely sliced onion and a small amount of rice vinegar and oil and cracked pepper to make a tasty salad.

For this week dish I’ll use potato and chicken stock as a base for a delicious chilled soup flavoured with loads of dill, mint and cucumber, then finished with yoghurt.

And what is it about cold soups? They’ve never really gained much of a following at restaurants, which seems a pity because at this time of the year sometimes it’s nice to pull a soup straight from the

Mural festival competitions open Budding artists, sculptors and photographers are being called upon to show their interest in entering Katikati Open-Air Art’s 2015 New Zealand Mural & Arts Festival’s competitions.

“What got us going is one of the murals – Primal Aotearoa, which was painted at the festival in 1996 by Bodhi Vincent – is in bad need of repair or replacement. “So we thought as an incentive – not only will contestants get to draw and enter their mural in the competition but the winning mural will also be painted to replace Primal Aotearoa on the side of the town’s butchery building.”

Other prizes for the mural contest winner include $5000 cash, the June Carlton Memorial Trophy; and the chance to win people’s choice award worth $1700.

“Contestants can interpret the theme any way they choose – natural taonga can be anything from insects to birds to animals to scenery such as coastlines to mountains – anything.”

“And it doesn’t have to be locally themed – it can be whatever the artist’s interpretation of natural treasure within NZ.” The deadline for mural contest submissions is July 31, 2015, but Steve says early entries are preferable.

Entrants are whittled down to six artists, who compete by painting their murals during the festival week in locations around the township amid being watched by festival-goers.

Entries are also open for the Arts of The Lens photograph competition.

And sculptors can enter the Katikati Bird-Walk Sculpture Contest with the theme ‘birds’.

Gearing up for a Magic season

Kia Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic is gearing up for a busy ANZ Championship, with the 2015 season featuring six matches on home turf.

Starting February 28, the 2015 season will feature two games at Tauranga’s ASB Stadium, three at Claudelands Arena in Hamilton and one at the Energy Events Centre in Rotorua, where the girls’ will no doubt receive warm receptions.

“Our membership has more than tripled this year, which we’re very excited about,” says coach Julie Fitzgerald.

Led by on court captain Leana de Bruin, the Magic team will be without inspirational leader Casey Kopua, who suffered a serious knee injury during a Constellation Cup test match against Australia last October.

“Casey is working extremely hard but it will be a very long process,” says Julie. “We don’t know when she’ll be back yet, we just hope that she’s able to lead New Zealand at the world champs.”

Stepping on court with a particularly young team, Julie is expecting an unpredictable season, with players including Samantha Sinclair, Jamie-lee Price and Malia Paseka returning for their second championship season – and first-time players at championship level: Aisha Bower and Kristiana Manu’a.

“It’s often difficult to get consistency out of a young team. But I’m very, very hopeful that we will continue to improve throughout the season.

“I think you’ll see some really future players developing at a great rate.”

The Magic team is the most successful New Zealand side in the ANZ Championship after making the elusive Finals Series every year since the league’s inception in 2008.

Julie and the girls have their eye on another championship win this season. “That’s what we’re aiming for, but definitely one game at a time”.

New councillor, creativity and Bikewise month Congratulations to Leanne Brown, the new Mount/Papamoa Ward councillor.

We now have four female elected members and a good mix of ages and backgrounds.

Meanwhile, the City Delivery Committee has received reports and updates from the City Centre Action Group, Creative Tauranga, Sport Bay of Plenty, Mainstreet Greerton, Mount Mainstreet and Downtown Tauranga.

I attended a Creative New Zealand workshop this week in Tauranga and gleaned information on what type of

funding is available and who can apply.

Attendees came from all parts of the Bay of Plenty. This provided a good opportunity to hear what the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and perceived threats are for their towns and cities. It was the first time in my seven years of being a councillor that elected members agreed to looking at the LTP budget again, prior to auditors.

Footing Mount’s footpath greed When is a footpath not a footpath? When it is a footpath in downtown Mount Maunganui?

The footpath in the downtown the Mount is littered with tables, chairs and now walls.

When did we lose our footpaths to greedy café owners? Can they not make any money without shifting their customers out on to the street, blocking pedestrians getting out of cars and other shops?

They can’t hold the blame totally, as the council holds most of the responsibility for this mess.

There are little rules to govern this usage of the footpath for tables and chairs and now walls are seen outside the one cafe.

When did a café have permission to build a wall on the footpath?

It’s time we reclaimed our footpaths.

Tauranga City Council’s team leader of bylaws and parking Stuart Goodman, who’s council department governs the table and chairs on the footpath, admits it’s out of control and all they have left is to prosecute offenders.

And how many have they prosecuted? None.

They just sit back and let the takeover continue.

It’s time we took back out footpaths. I mean they are for walking on - without obstacles.

Shark cage use concerns us all How would the Bay of Plenty region feel if a shark cage was placed four nautical miles off the coast of the Mount for cage diving?

Four nautical miles – or 7.4km – the distance from Tauranga to Mount Maunganui.

This is the issue I faced first-hand when two-thirds of the Stewart Island population showed up at three extended meetings to discuss it.

The turnout – concerned over the tourism drawcard – is the equivalent of about 80,000 people showing up in Tauranga.

It’s unlikely Tauranga would allow this – the city’s size and protests would put a halt to it.

Stewart Islanders did voice their concerns

over the act and made submissions to Parliament. However, they say none of them were taken up.

Island residents have seen a noticeable change in shark’s behaviour since the act has been allowed.

Previously, sharks were aloof and shy – they’re now bold, without fear, showing up around recreational fishers, divers and boaties with multiple reports of close encounters.

New Zealand First is asking for the Government to show a little common sense and undertake a comprehensive study at Stewart Island, taking into consideration the safety and impact on Stewart Islanders – starting with a two-year moratorium solely on Stewart Island.

According to scientists, the sharks’ behaviour off Stewart Island is different from other parts of the world.

dropped to 5.7 per cent from 6.6 per cent in the previous quarter.

In 2014 the Bay contributed 15,600 more jobs to the national economy, behind Auckland with 22,300 jobs, Waikato with 17,400 jobs, and Canterbury with 15,800. Factoring in the smaller Bay population size, we have the strongest increase in employment of these areas with a six per cent gain in jobs.

Our region is also set to benefit from increasing housing developments as Housing Minister Nick Smith signed the Housing Accord with the Tauranga City Council.

Omokoroa and Papamoa are among those areas where building consents will be fast-tracked, meaning more homes and construction jobs for the Bay.

Helping Kiwis get ahead I spent a great day at the recent Katikati A&P Show. There was much talk about our growing economy and what it means for us all.

Politicians can quote all the numbers and statistics they like, but most people are really only interested in what the numbers mean for themselves, their family and their local community.

A strong indication about the strength of our economy is that here in the Western Bay of Plenty the Government’s plan to build a more competitive and productive economy is working.

How can we tell? Well, because there are more new jobs, less unemployment, fewer people living on welfare and local businesses are reporting high levels of confidence.

A recent NZ Institute of Research survey reports hiring intentions are very strong, and Seek reported a 10 per cent increase in new job ads during 2014 compared with 2013.

That’s 20,000 more job ads than the previous year.

When people have jobs they can pay their bills and invest in their families futures.

School pools key to swim skills It’s tragic to think the closure of school pools, which means requiring expensive lessons at council pools, are costing our children’s lives because of the simple fact that all are not learning to swim.

It’s almost unbelievable schools have ‘removed’ or bulldozed their pools to save running costs.

The reality is school finances have had to be redirected into drastic remedial programmes in an endeavour to turn around the abysmal standard of reading and writing, which were once highly ranked.

To back up the ‘required loss’ of their pool, principals are making excuses that chilly school pools mean pupils can only utilise the pool for a short number of days per year. Twaddle!

Every previous generation coped and drownings in New Zealand happen in cold, chilling waters - be it open sea beaches, rivers or lakes. Most of these public playgrounds are not warm, tepid waters.

This was commonly called the swimming section. There, pupils were taught to swim, improve existing swimming abilities and to work towards a swimming skills certificate.

The discontinuance of the very successful Government Education Department swimming programme in all primary schools was a tragedy.

All our children should have free access to swimming pools and lessons. Our school pools were admirable and gave all children that opportunity and a better chance to survive in a life threatening situation.

Te Puke’s highway - the What special privileges? status quo should stay Re: Funding and speed limits on Te Puke highway. I would also like to endorse what both Frank Cammock and Joan Dugmore stated in the Te Puke newspaper.

The Te Puke highway must continue to be funded by the New Zealand Transport Agency and not by Western Bay of Plenty ratepayers as there is no alternative statefunded highway provided to the toll road.

I’m of the view that the Tauranga City Council must retain the amenity of the Begonia House, either on its present site or replace it with another, in full working order on another city park or reserve.

It has brought much pleasure to visitors, particularly older residents of Tauranga during the years.

Council has failed to provide detailed cost figures or what’s involved in maintaining the facility and needs to be more receptive to the comments and input of its ratepayers. I support the retention or provision of a Begonia House.

This weekend is the Nashi Festival. Which I’m quite excited about. Mainly because it takes place not far from the welcoming gates of the Watusi Country Club.

Close enough for one of the cats to be my sober driver. The little buggers jump in the car every time I leave the door open anyway, so I figure it’s about time they started pulling their weight.

Not that the Nashi Festival looks like a drinking event. It’s much weirder than that...

Actually, as we all know, weird is in the eye of the beholder (duking it out with beauty).

A much better word would probably be “unusual”.

The Nashi Fest, held at the Arty House, 372 Wairoa Rd, Te Puna, is I think what one might call a “new age” festival.

They have music, they have storytelling, they have workshops, they have four stages’ they have stuff for kids to do.

Sharing their abundance the following weekend on February 27-28) are the good people of the Tauranga Acoustic Music Club and the Katikati Folk Club, who combine annually for a bash at an orchard on Works Rd just south of Katikati. This year they’ve renamed it the Aongatete Festival.

The Friday night consists of a blackboard concert by members of the clubs. Then it’s all on for a full day of music on Saturday, a mix of informal concerts and spots by the festivals two guest acts.

One is local quartet the Wild Clovers, a band with all the necessary components of a folk act: an acoustic guitar, a bodhran, an accordion, and Robbie Laven.

As usual, he’ll be playing everything else (fiddle, mandolin, penny whistle etc...).

The other outfit on the bill don’t much resemble a folk act but seem very popular: Wizard and Oz, the piano and guitar duo who boast fine vocals, virtuoso piano playing and a bag of 1000 cover songs to suit all occasions.

Females to tri out in force It’s all about the ladies this weekend as women of all ages come out in force for the 2015 Generation Homes Women’s Triathlon.

Close to 500 women will complete the femaleonly triathlon on February 22, with one Tauranga gal completing the 400m swim, 10km cycle and 4km run or walk from Pilot Bay to surprise her husband.

It’s a surprise, so we won’t name her. What we can say, is she’s been secretly training for the triathlon since before Christmas to sign up last month.

She’s been attending the free Tri Chicks Novice Triathlete training sessions every Tuesday night, on top of weekly visits to the gym.

The anonymous athlete chose 2015 as her year of taking better care of her health and wellbeing, so she set herself the goal of completing her first triathlon.

“I just thought I’d share it with my husband with a little surprise,” she says. “He’s very supportive in every-

thing I do.”

Her husband hasn’t any idea she’s been training for the triathlon – but she knows he’ll be both surprised and proud.

She encourages all women to “get out there and give it a go” – and wishes everyone the best of luck for the event.

Road closures are in place from 5.30am to midday on Sunday, February 22, along The Mall, Adams Ave and Marine Parade.

Women can register for the 2015 Generation Homes Women’s Triathlon as individuals, in a team, as mother and daughter, or a threegeneration entry by heading along to Pilot Bay on Saturday, February 21, between 1pm and 5pm.

One Tauranga woman is surprising her husband by entering the 2015 Generation Homes women’s Triathlon this Sunday at Pilot Bay.

Cheese, beer and barbecues Monteiths and Mainland cheese have teamed up to put a spin on the old tasting tray by providing samples of cheeses with six tasting glasses of craft beers.

The smoked cheddar and southern pale ale match is an amazing combination, which would finish off an afternoon barbecue with friends rather nicely.

Some fresh Kingfish steaks grilled rare with a horseradish, chilli and tomato rum salsa, barbecued fresh corn cobs with tequila and lime butter – and a hot creamy kumara, pumpkin and kamokamo pasta salad – would also be a great lead-in to this beer and cheese combination.

We’ve been approached about getting a Monteiths low alcohol tap-beer into The Phoenix so we’ve forwarded the question to Monteiths’ head brewer Tony, to see what his response will be. I hear Brew Bar has already a fantastic low-alcohol tap-beer available so thumbs up to them for looking after their patrons.

Speaking of low-alcohol beer – a wacky little titbit. A few weeks ago I saw an ad for 100 per cent alcohol-free beer for – wait for it – dogs!

Tenancy tips to get the bond back When it comes to checking your rental property at the end of the tenancy agreement – it seems landlords develop better microscopic vision than Superman.

They can spot things that may have never been mentioned before.

But there are ways to improve your chances of getting your bond back.

Check your contract. Dig it out, dust it off and give it another read.

Then make sure everything is asked of you is completed.

Patch up any damage. Don’t just cover up a hole in the wall with a picture – fix it properly.

Ensure nothing’s missing or broken.

Check everything is left as it should be.

Take photographs as proof you’ve left it in good order.

This could be useful evidence later on.

Give the place a proper deep clean.

Ask a friend or family member to check you haven’t missed anything and remove all rubbish.

If the tenancy agreement states the property must be professionally cleaned – remember to provide receipts as proof.

ness. As God intended, even when different interests are involved, a core agreement on truth and values binds us together.

In Psalm 133:1 King David acknowledged: “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity”.

David understood that unity builds peace, security, a realisation of being loved – and of course, joy with happiness. Friendships flourish when unity is practised.

Unity is not accidental. Rather, God designed Christians to live and function best when we: “have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5).

Through God’s Word the Lord Jesus Christ engages believers in constructing unified relationships.

As the apostle Peter instructed: “All of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind” (1 Peter 3:8).

Adorned in matching outfits, 14 teams of women, aged 30 to 50-plus, showed off their carefully choreographed steps at the Pacific Guards leisure marching display in Mount Maunganui last weekend.

Well, you can’t just sit there Not many people remember Larry Walters. A few years ago he was responsible for disrupting the Air Traffic in and out of Los Angeles’ airport.

Larry dreamed of flying but he couldn’t afford lessons, so he tied 48 helium weather balloons to his old aluminium deck chair.

He used milk bottles for ballast and took a BB gun to pop some balloons so he could land.

Unfortunately, he dropped the BB gun and floated up to 15,000 feet into the path of aircraft flying in and out of LA’s airport.

When they finally got him down (that’s another story) he was interviewed by a media frenzy.

“Were you scared?” they asked. “Darn right

I was,” said Larry.

“Why did you do it?” they queried.

“Well you can’t just sit there,” Larry replied.

You can’t just sit there. Now that is a phrase for the beginning of the year.

In fact Jesus said the same thing to the disciples after they worshiped him on the mountain after the resurrection. It’s recorded in Matthew 28.18:20: “Go”, Jesus said, “And make disciples of all Nations…”

The temptation the disciples faced, and we also face, is to sit down and become complacent or cowered into silence. But Jesus in effect said: ‘You can’t just sit there, for the Love of God – Go!’ Why not make 2015 the year you invite someone to church. “You can’t just sit there!”

Unconditional promises and Israel In Genesis 12:1-3, God makes an unconditional covenant with Abram. In this unconditional covenant, known as the Abrahamic Covenant, God makes three unconditional promises to Abram and to his descendants throughout all generations.

Firstly, there is the promise of land (verse one); secondly, the promise of descendants (verse two) and thirdly, the promise of blessing and redemption (verse three).

In giving these three unconditional promises to Abram and his descendants – for all generations – God declares profoundly in verse three: “I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonours you I will curse”. The HCSB version states: “I will curse those who treat you with contempt”.
