And that’s only the protests against sale of national assets. The real fun starts with Guy Fawkes’ night. At least we’ve got shod of that dreadful Halloween nonsense for another year.

We’re not really sure why we celebrate Halloween here, since it’s essentially an American habit, but it’s probably something to do with our ANZUS alliance and some agreement that when Americans do stuff that involves the security and peaceful co-existence of the Western world, such as carve scary faces in pumpkins and indulge in weird street-trading with confectionary, we also think it’s a good idea. Although not all American traditions have been embraced with the same alacrity here. The whole concept of invading other countries hasn’t grasped Kiwis with the same enthusiasm.

Change ahead Council’s open forum endangered

Tauranga City’s new councillors were officially sworn in this week.

Tauranga City’s newly sworn in councillors could lose their right to ask any question of the council and council staff without notice, due to legal issues.

Mayor Stuart Crosby says the open forum question period at the end of each council meeting is under investigation, ironically by the very law guaranteeing open and transparent government.

Under the Local Government and Official Information Meetings Act council must let the community know what is going to be discussed at a meeting. At the open forum nobody knows, often, what is going to

be discussed, says Stuart.

“There is a strong argument to say that if you have that then people don’t know under the official information act what’s going to be said at a meeting.

“We are just investigating the legality of whether that open forum can proceed or not, because it potentially contravenes the official information and meetings act.”

Stuart says most councils don’t have these forums for that very reason. “We are one of the few Bruce apparently that does.”

“We haven’t decided yet whether we are going to pursue that or not, but on advice we may well need to cancel the open forum.”

Mount Drury tree chop An attempt to reduce the homeless community’s summer migration to Mount Drury will see part of the local landmark receive a vegetation facelift this month.

Teen dies in Katikati crash A Katikati teenager died and three others were injured after a serious car crash during the long Labour weekend.

Sixteen-year-old Ricky Pettigrew died when the Ford Laser he was travelling in with three other teens hit a tree at Tahawai, just north of Katikati about 1am on Monday.

Two other Katikati teenagers, both passengers in the car, were taken to Tauranga Hospital with moderate and minor injuries and later discharged.

Police say the 18-year-old driver of the car initially fled the crash scene and was found wandering down State Highway 2 about 6am.

He was also taken to Tauranga Hospital and discharged.

A funeral for the 16-year-old will be held at Pyes Pa Memorial Park Chapel at 1pm on Saturday.

New councillors take the reigns Tauranga City Council chambers were packed to the brim as family and friends turned out to welcome in the newly elected city councillors on Wednesday.

Each councillor took their turn in declaring the city’s oath while council took its first actions – voting Kelvin Clout in as Deputy Mayor and setting the date of the first meeting.

Tauranga City Council begins the vegetation enhancement and weed control project along the Pacific Avenue boundary of the reserve – which is expected to run through to December.

TCC park coordinator for arboriculture Joshua Trafford says in its current form the vegetation around Mount Drury is enclosed and provides many hiding opportunities, in turn attracting “undesirable activities”.

“In the summertime there is some homeless activity through there and there is a lot of material from sleeping bags, mattresses and drug paraphernalia.

“By increasing the visibility from top to

bottom we are looking to reduce that.”

He concedes council deals with homeless people throughout the city regularly and do not proactively remove them, but the reserve is one place they discourage them – especially with the annual summer influx.

“It’s downtown Mount Maunganui and it’s not a situation that we expect them to be at.”

Schools tackling truancy issues Tauranga schools are turning their attention to finding out why students are being truant in order to address the issue.

Otumoetai College principal Dave Randell says, to stop a student from being truant, people need to get to the cause of why they are avoiding school.

“Some of the comments we get are some struggle with learning,

some have bullying and relationship problems, peer pressure; and another one that really hits us is pressure from parents to look after siblings or do things.

“They key one is the fear of failure.

You have something due and you don’t have it ready, so you start putting your head in the sand and you don’t turn up to school.”

Auckland-based Neil Construction Ltd and Tauranga’s S&L Consultants Ltd each pleaded guilty in Tauranga District Court to damaging an archaeological site in Tauranga without an archaeological authority.

Katikati osteopath jailed A former osteopath from Katikati has been jailed for eight years for sexual offences against female patients.

Richard James Davis, 53, was sentenced in the High Court in Wellington this week after being found guilty of eight charges of sexual violation and seven charges of indecent assault in a jury trial last month.

The sexual violation charges occurred at Davis’ Gisborne practice where a number of female patients allege Davis made them partially undress before touching their genitals and breasts with ungloved hands.

Kaituna jet under threat The Kaituna River jet boat is facing ruin unless it can get a speed restriction exemption for the section of the Kaituna River on which it takes tourists on summer jet boat rides.

The jet boat business has been operating since 2001 under the Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s Navigation and Safety Bylaw, which gave the business a speed limit exemption permitting the jet boats to cruise the narrow mud-banked river at speeds of 70-75kmh.

He says Otumoetai College’s Year 9 students have gone from 90 per cent to up to 93 per cent.

“Our Year 10s have gone from 88 per cent to up to 90 per cent and our Year 11s have jumped up from an 86 per cent to 94 per cent. That was our NCEA level and we really worked hard to increase that rate.

“Attendance is a direct correlation to attainment.

The biggest improvement we have noticed is in the attendance rate of our Maori students.”

Student engagement is a big focus at the college, says Dave.

“It’s about responding purposely for the needs of the students. It’s about trying to find out why a student is being truant, and addressing that issue.

“We have done a lot of work of engaging students in our classrooms. In our school we have what we call ‘behaviour for learning framework’ and we are focusing on the early identification and intervention of those students at risk.”

Dave says a truant is described as an at risk student.

“Some of these children show pretty early signs of disengagement, like missing a period, being late or not handing in work. We have done a lot of work to make sure we identify these students and give them support.

“A lot of cases it is about meeting them, assessing their individual needs, seeing the parents, and getting them to see a counsellor to get them over these issues.”

Dave says if students continue to skip class, they are just going to exacerbate the problem.

Joshua says it’s not a drastic procedure, but one that will promote the area as a pleasant space for families to enjoy during summer.

From partners on the court, to coach, teacher and student – Otumoetai College’s Charles Leota and Daryl Lewis have an ever-changing relationship.

This weekend the beach volleyball pair, who have played together for three months, are hoping their success winning the Hamilton AA Challenger tournament at Labour Weekend will continue on Mount Main Beach when the series returns on Saturday.

Every year Charles, who began teaching PE at Otumoetai College in 2008 after three years competing in the international beach circuit, likes to pair up with a talented player aiming to make a career out of the international game.

This season Charles, who also coaches the top national women’s team, is playing with Year 13 pupil Daryl – who he describes as “currently the best player for his age”.

“I try to help fast-track them; picking up someone

young and try to develop them, to help them along the way,” says Charles, whose a passion for developing talented beach athletes prompted him to develop Android app Volleyball InStats to help coaches make better decisions.

Charles, who has own playing highlights of winning gold at an Oceania tournament and making the Asian series semi-finals, says ultimately success comes down to a player’s own hard work.

Daryl is excited about training with Charles, saying he is learning lots and believes if they keep playing consistently in the challenger series they’ll get a high seeding in January’s pro-tour.

“It’s definitely improving my game skill-wise, he’s teaching me heaps of different strategic things.”

Daryl is aiming to earn a US college volleyball scholarship and ultimately becoming professional, but he knows there is little chance of playing professionally in New Zealand.

Tauranga windsurfer reigns supreme Tauranga Yacht & Power Boat Club’s champion windsurfer Coral Headey has successfully defended her 2012 title, winning the Girls Title at the New Caledonian Techno Nationals.

Towering heights A bustling year representing both city and country on the basketball court is paying dividends for Sam Smith as he prepares to head south with a hefty scholarship in hand.

From next February the 17-year-old, Tauranga Boys’ College student will juggle a first year accounting degree along with his ambitious basketball commitments thanks to a full basketball scholarship to Lincoln University.

The scholarship offers financial support for highgrade players, as well as intensive, sport-specific training through the University’s high performance team and the Canterbury Basketball Association.

“I was told the scholarship was an option so I applied for it. When I found out I was pretty stoked as I was always looking to go to university and this scholarship just helps out heaps with costs,” says Sam. Towering at 1.89m the point guard/shooting guard has been in impressive form this season donning a number of representative singlets alongside his TBC side; including the Waikato Under 19, Tauranga Under 23 and New Zealand Under 18.

Sam believes playing a diverse range of age groups will aid in making the step up from college ball – and chasing a Junior Tall Blacks Under 19 spot for the world qualifiers in Australia.

“I guess I played pretty well this year and it was one of my better years. I moved this year to Tauranga Boys’ from Mount College and I have gained heaps more exposure and am feeling more confident in my abilities.”

Tourism taster for kiwifruit A campaign to attract Chinese visitors and investment to Te Puke is gaining momentum, with the Te Puke Economic Development Group sending its second trade mission to the East Asian country.

Development group director and Kiwi 360 operator Graeme Crossman left Tuesday for a week-long trip focussed on talking to travel wholesalers in Guangzhou and Shenzhen. The trip follows a promotional trip to Xian and Shanghai by Graeme, and EDG managing director Mark Boyle, in July.

Graeme says there is a huge interest in the great food, which Te Puke’s abundant soil and climate grow, which resonates with many Chinese – and he expects similar strong interest in the ‘Te Puke Goodness Grows Here’ promotion as the previous trip.

He will also be sharing his insights and advice on turning a working farm into a tourism business, like Kiwi 360, as guest speaker at a forum at the giant China Agricultural High Tech Fair in Yangling, Shaanxi. It is China’s largest agricultural show, last year attracting more than 1.6 million visitors.

Mark says the guest invitation reflects the “extraordinary value and intense interest the Chinese have in our unique, natural environment, productivity and abundance”.

The first trip has already translated to bookings from some inbound agents, but it is not going to lead to an immediate tourism boom, says Mark.

“We are not talking about thousands and thousands of visitors, we are talking about gradual growth.”

The push, leveraging off strong linkages with nearby Rotorua, has seen a package developed for visitors from Rotorua – including a trip to Kiwi 360 and Comvita’s expanded visitor centre (opening November 28).

Mark hopes to attract a “few thousand” visitors this summer season, with the aim of growing to 20,000 within two seasons. On top of attracting visitors, Graeme is promoting Te Puke as a good place for Chinese to invest or establish businesses.

The EDG is planning a third trade push to China in March.

Launching junior riders For keen mountain biker Gareth Osmond, it was only a question of time before his son Zavier wanted to follow his trail and chase him along the mountain bike tracks.

Gareth, who also coaches the Tauranga Boys’ College mountain bike team, has been so impressed with the squad’s progress he began thinking about the benefit of getting riders involved at a younger age.

“I went with the college boys to the Waikato-Bay of Plenty champs and we noticed there was a Year 5-6 grade and there were hardly any kids in it,” says Gareth.

With nine-year-old Zavier keen to compete next year, Gareth planned to set up a mountain bike team at his Greenpark School – but decided to expand it to a junior programme through Mountain Bike Tauranga for all interested young riders.

“With the club already having a race night on Mondays, we decided to tag it on to that and open it up to all schools.”

During winter, Gareth has been getting the message out to schools and adjusting a track at Papamoa’s Summerhill Recreation Farm to offer the perfect terrain for the young riders (Year 5 plus), who race for 20 minutes.

“It’s about developing mountain biking as a whole. Just looking at the kids coming through Tauranga Boys’

College, hardly any had any experience; so if we could have them with another four years’ experience, it will get them off to a good start.”

Gareth says the junior summer series, which begins this Monday at 4.30pm, will combine a 16-race series with coaching, in the aim of developing the next generation of riders.

“It’s also a great way for families to have some fun together. You can go along on Monday nights, the kids can race. Then the parents can race after them. It’s a whole family affair.”

Safe start to summer patrol Calm conditions on both the water and beaches provided an incident free yet educational start to the summer patrol season for Bay of Plenty lifeguards.

Clubs along the East Coast were quiet throughout Labour Weekend, with no reported rescues or medical incidents.

The weekend marked the start of the 2013/2014 summer patrol season for lifeguards, who will be out patrolling the beaches until Easter.

Papamoa Surf Club administrator Anita Trappitt says although there

were no rescues, life guards were kept busy educating beachgoers on where to swim, and what risks are involved.

Omanu Surf Club director of surf lifesaving, Mike Swan, says conditions were perfect to ease into the patrol season with the cooler water temperatures keeping most beachgoers on the golden sands.

“We had lovely weather on the beach with our spring carnival on Saturday.

Sunday was a little disappointing with the weather, but Monday we had great numbers on the beach,” says Mike.

Always on the look-out for ways to stretch her writing skills, awardwinning young adult fiction specialist Lee Murray’s interest was piqued when she saw a challenge to write a scary story about children.

Lee, who would hardly call herself a horror fan, was among five Tauranga writers who put pen to paper in the challenge. Last night, the launch of the horror anthology ‘Baby Teeth – Bite-Sized Tales of Terror’ in Greerton was set to coincide with Halloween.

“It’s been pretty amazing to go from an idea to a published

book in six months – if you know anything about publishing that’s a record time, especially when you consider it started off just as a writing exercise with no plans to publish.”

When Lee saw the challenge posted on Facebook, by Wellington writer Dan Rabarts, to write stories inspired by creepy things children say, it got her thinking of when she was a child and she thought the sound of her heart beating in bed was actually a fox waiting to get her. So began one of the three stories she wrote for the book, which she has ended up co-editing.

“It’s been a great project. A lot of people have put a lot of work into it; and there has been tremendous

support from the public, with a crowd funding a campaign on Pledge Me to pay for publication.”

While inspired by children, the “dark and sinister” stories are not suitable for reading to children, but all books sold will raise money for charity Duffy Books in Homes to encourage younger readers.

Other Tauranga writers in the anthology include Alan Lindsay, Piper Mejia and Jan Goldie, who contributed a story that looks at how a family living in an ordinary suburb deals with the extraordinary when invaded by aliens; meanwhile author Celine Murray looks at what happens when creepy children become adults.

The book is part of the Books a Plenty readers festival.

Learning from the best Bay of Plenty’s proven surf lifesaving skills are on show this weekend as the latest wave of surf lifesaving coaches assemble at Omanu Surf Club for an extra coaching edge.

This Saturday and Sunday, 15 senior coaches, aged between 18 and 40 years old, looking to fast track their progress through the coaching ranks will engage in an intensive coaching clinic with New Zealand Surf Life Saving head coach Scott Bartlett.

The annual event, held in the Bay this year, sees level two coaches up-skill themselves with a range of coaching techniques before testing their new skills on Omanu’s young lifeguards.

“On Saturday we will up-skill the 15 lifeguards and then put them in charge of the 60-odd kids with a number of sessions, which will be some good coaching for the kids,” says Scott.

“We only take a certain amount at each time because we try to spend a good amount of quality time with each of them to make them better coaches.”

Scott, also director of Bartlett Swim School, believes New Zealand’s coaching ranks are constantly improving with a smarter and efficient approach to resources and the coaches themselves – particularly in the Bay. “Surf lifesaving in the Bay of Plenty has a great culture and a good family culture so a lot of people want to be involved. In the last five years it’s been like that so we are very fortunate we have a good number of coaches in in the Bay of Plenty for our children.”

QuarryFest returns Entertainment, art and craft stalls, boutique food and drink, plant sales and beautiful gardens to explore – the popular annual QuarryFest is back at Te Puna Quarry Park this Sunday, November 3.

Coordinating organiser Dulcie Artus says there is a full complement of 60 stalls, which include herbbased skin care products, wooden furniture, jewellery, glass pots, baby clothes, hats, a chiropractor and locally-produced food such as smoked garlic products and Distillerie Deinlein’s fruit-based liqueurs.

“We’ve also got a lot of plant stalls this year because a number of people who had stalls at our Spring Fling decided to come and join the QuarryFest as well.”

Shona Purves and her team are going to offer Devonshire teas with scones baked fresh on-site and there will also be home-baking stands, a coffee cart, and Samosaz vegetarian food from Katikati.

Te Puna Scouts are running abseiling for the adventurous, while there will be a rolling programme of entertainment at the amphitheatre, including the popular Wai Taiko drummers from Hamilton, this year’s North Island Jump Jam champions from St Mary’s School in Tauranga, the Melotones women’s singing group, and pipe band music.

Entertainment for smaller children includes face painting, dress-up clothes, alpacas to pet and the butterfly garden to visit.

And for anyone looking for a bargain there is the giant garage sale, run by quarry park volunteers, which has a focus on plants and garden-related items such as tools and pots, as well as some household goods.

The QuarryFest is 10am-4pm Sunday, November 3, at Te Puna Quarry Park. Entry is gold coin donation.

Taking a fresh approach Thrilling and humbling relief – these are a few of the emotions I have experienced since discovering the community elected me to Tauranga City Council.

I’m thrilled to be working alongside Tauranga’s best and brightest, as voted by you. I’m humbled at Tauranga’s support for a fresh change to the council. And, I’m relieved my six-months of public exposure has worked out well for both of us.

I am thrilled to be able to write to you each week.

I was a regular reader of former Tauranga City councillor Bill Falkner’s column. So, I intend to provide you with similar insights into what is happening at council, while also adding my own flavour.

Firstly, I want to sincerely thank everyone who put their hand up to be elected. It takes a lot of guts to expose one’s vision, values, and personality

so publicly. They each made many sacrifices during many months – all for the love of their community.

It seems like an age has passed since I was told about the election result. But it was only three weeks ago. Our councillor inboxes have been humbly bombarded with invitations, including speaking engagements, opinions, and questionnaires, from the community wanting to get to know us.

Tauranga City councillors’ first gathering at a two-day retreat was a fascinating experience.

Finding common ground with people, who were your competition only two weeks ago, could have been an anxious time.

But we realised we want to achieve similar positive outcomes for Tauranga. We just have different approaches to achieve it. This is a very healthy position for a new council to have.

Anyone who says local

body politics is dead is wrong in my opinion. Yes, the low voter turnout needs to be addressed.

But many people have been invigorated by the changes voters have made to council.

People who usually ignore local politics have approached us, speaking passionately about their new-found hope for Tauranga’s positive future.

The community’s new-found passion has inspired this council to do things differently from the previous one. We want to address the issues, rather than applying stickingplaster solutions.

We want to have thorough, constructive debate about issues, not about personalities.

We want to lead a culture that empowers staff to go the extra mile for the community.

My personal motto for approaching life is: ‘Be in. Be real. Be bold’.

This will be an important reminder as the new council tackles the big issues during the next three years.

Big calendar event Fairhaven School’s Fireworks Gala is being labelled one of the “biggest events on the Te Puke calendar”.

From 5pm on November 2, a selection of family games, and raffles with big prizes, will be on offer – including paintball, coin rolls, live music, and – of course – fireworks.

Bay of Plenty foster groups have joined forces, with the support of sponsors, to celebrate the effort of foster parents with a fun event for children this Sunday at Ten Pin Tauranga. Among foster families taking part will be Suzy Brown and her three foster children siblings. Early childhood teacher Suzy has seen first-hand the major impact fostering can have on vulnerable children. Through her work, Suzy says her eyes were opened to the importance of fostering when an older woman caring for her granddaughter was overcome with worry about what would happen if she died, so the child was put into a foster family.

“I would definitely encourage others to get into fostering.

Fostering comes with challenges, but is also comes with huge rewards – just being able to see the expressions on the kids’ faces, being able to give them new experiences, or just reading books,” says Suzy.

“One little girl just couldn’t believe I was playing with her, running through the sprinkler on a hot day – it creates huge memories for them.

The news a couple of weeks ago that part of the $13 million Katikati Town Centre Plan was going ahead is not well-received by residents. The local newspapers included a mock-up of the northern parking area, which on first glance suggests the whole plan is going ahead without any further public consultation. When the original plan was discussed five years ago there was some consternation the town would be paying through targeted rates and then residents had more questions than answers.

Auckland City has had a turbulent start to the new triennium, with revelations about Mayor Len Brown overshadowing the important task of building a new council. Then we have John Banks, a former Auckland Mayor, resigning from being a government Minister because of the Auckland District Court decision to send him to trial over a claim he falsified his official return on election donations. Is it any wonder, I ask myself, that politicians rank 46th on the list of New Zealand’s most trusted professions for 2013?

There has been much reporting, and some celebration, of the 11 per cent of population growth during seven years in Tauranga.

Clearly, growth is linked to more people, more houses and a bigger economy.

If growth is on the fringes of the city, it also means loss of productive farmland and more costly roads and pipes.

If the growth is inside the city, it means more pressure on existing infrastructure; as we are currently seeing with stormwater management in Tauranga.

I hope you enjoyed a good long weekend with friends and family, or you got to those jobs around the home you’ve been putting off. I took the opportunity to have a family weekend and spend some time with my parents.

But I was straight back into it on Tuesday though, with cabinet meetings in Wellington before heading to Auckland on Wednesday for the opening of a new substation, and the Site Safe NZ Graduation and Construction Health and Safety Awards.

Celebrating Arataki School’s 50 year milestone Ebba Te Tua enjoys the view from her Kaumatua home, at Ngatuahine Place.

A former Arataki School teacher, who was influential in developing Maori education at the school, is returning to celebrate another milestone.

Starting as a teacher at the school’s opening in 1963 – and establishing the first bilingual unit at Arataki School – Ebba Te Tua is looking forward to celebrating her 44 years at the school on its 50th birthday today.

The bilingual unit – which opened in 1990 – is the first in Mount Maunganui set up at the request of the community. And Ebba was one of the two teachers initially staffing it.

The 78-year-old calls the bilingual unit a milestone for her and the school.

Because learning resources “weren’t avail-

able” for Maori education, Ebba made them herself.

“We made simple Maori books – anything that was necessary to help us with our work,” says Ebba. “It was a big job, but I loved it.”

The school’s name means “to lead and to guide”, but Ebba says it has not always been called Arataki.

The school got its name from one of the many ships to sail into Tauranga.

“It was Omanu Number Two School at first. When we moved in 1963, the locals of that time called it Arataki after that ship.”

Ebba “enjoyed all of my years at Arataki” and feels honoured to be officially opening the school’s centennial festivities with a special powhiri at 2pm today.

Celebrations continue tomorrow, with cutting of a 50th birthday cake and jubilee dinner.

New beginnings, new look council, and all kinds of art This is my first of a weekly blog for The Weekend Sun and Sunlive.

These are my opinions and views based on the meetings, events and people I meet in my role as a Otumoetai/Pyes Pa Ward councillor for Tauranga City Council and also from what I observe while out and about in the city.

Last Wednesday was the inaugural Tauranga City Council meeting for the new triennium. I am chair of the Historic Village Advisory Group, and I look forward to working with this group, and Friends of the Historic Village, to enhance the Historic Village for locals and visitors alike.

Last Saturday, I spent the day on the Arts Bus. Our tour departed from the Incubator at the Historic Village and visited many local art studios and galleries.

We called in to some of the ‘pop up’ events occurring around the CBD and Mount, and were entertained by colourful street performers. One of the highlights was visiting Owen Dippie’s studio – a very gifted young artist, whose art work can be seen around the city.

For example, Owen’s portrait of A Girl with a Pearl Earring at 219 Cameron Rd. During the long weekend, beautiful weather drew thousands of people to the city and the Mount, where hundreds of hot rod cars were on display.

The pride of the owners was reflected in the immaculate presentation of their cars.

Going digital excuse to be neighbourly With just a few weeks until television goes digital, Going Digital national manager Greg Harford is urging people to check on friends, family and neighbours to make sure they know what to do.

“Nine out of 10 people are already sorted, but those who don’t yet have Freeview, Igloo, or Sky, will face the prospect of no television from December 1, if they don’t act now,” says Greg.

“As well as helping out friends, families and neighbours, it’s also worth thinking about any other TVs in your house, and recorders, because all TV equipment needs to go digital if you want to keep using it.”

The community training network SeniorNet has been making sure its members are ready for the change from analogue to digital, running master classes on setting up your own set top box in its 90 learning

centres throughout the country.

SeniorNet’s executive officer Grant Sidaway says spreading information peer to peer is second nature to its members, and helping each other to go digital has been no exception.

Neighbourhood Support also believes neighbourliness is part of Kiwis’ makeup.

CEO Roger Eynon says helping your neighbours to go digital is the type of neighbourly act it likes to encourage.

“For many people, a television service is a main link to the outside world,” says Roger.

“Generally, the service is taken for granted and we all push the button; and on it comes. If you can help someone to overcome the possibility of them losing their television reception, simply ask if you can help.”

A spicy secret hides in Papamoa If you want a real taste of Indian cuisine, I suggest dining at Great Spice Tandoori Indian Restaurant and Bar in Papamoa.

I love Indian food – so when visiting the restaurant at Palm Beach Plaza Shopping Centre with my partner I had high expectations.

Traditional and new

The food there is divine. And with a wide range of dishes, from the traditional butter chicken, lamb rogan josh, and beef or chicken kormas, and vindaloos – to the less common goat curry – you are spoilt for choice.

For those of you who eat a no-meat diet, there are 14 vegetarian dishes; and for the little ones, smaller dishes are available.

For a starter, my partner and I shared a mixed platter offering a combination of all seven entree choices, including two vegetable samosas, onion bhaji, two pieces of chicken tikka, and two seekh kebabs.

It was a tasty starter to lead us into our mains. I chose a personal favourite – chicken korma. But my partner (being more adventurous than me), chose something from the new menu – chicken manchurian, which is deep friend and marinated boneless chicken tossed with corn flour-based ginger and garlic, and garnished with herbs.

In my opinion – no Indian dish is complete without a serving of naan bread – so we chose cheese and garlic, and garlic, naans to dip into the delicious sauces.

I am pleased to say my anticipations were fulfilled with a wonderful meal and at an affordable price too – with most mains costing about $17.

The restaurant’s name – Great Spice – comes from the special blend of spices chef Bishnu creates and uses in some of the dishes on the menu.

I believe this food place is Papamoa’s little secret – but I am willing to share it with you. And for those who live closer to town – I have just heard a Great Spice is now open in Omanu.

Katikati’s Zachary Coley is an active 11-year-old despite having a visual impairment.

Born 15 weeks premature and weighing 600g, Zach was on a ventilator in an incubator when he received too much oxygen, causing retinopathy of prematurity (his retinas detached from the back of his eyes).

At 40 weeks, Zach received an eye laser procedure which has given him partial sight – his mother Sandy Coley says with glasses on, the Year 6 Katikati Primary School student can see up to three metres.

Without them he can only see 20cm ahead.

He also has astigmatism, rapid progressing myopia, and was recently diagnosed with dyspraxia – affecting his movement, coordination, memory and other cognitive skills.

But Zach doesn’t let his conditions hold him back – and the RNZBF has provided an orientation officer to teach him road safety and awareness and how to use his ears to hear danger.

Sandy has always allowed Zach to experience outdoor activities – this year he gained his bicycle licence, borrowing a tandem bike from the RNZBF. Zach does school work on a laptop with Windows 8, and receives resources, including electronic books, from the Blind and Low Vision Education Network via Ministry of Education and RNZBF funding.

Next year he begins at Katikati College. Sandy says this will be a big step into the unknown.

“He’ll receive more teacher aide hours and an RNZBF orientation and mobility officer will help him transition to the college, ensuring he gets used to the school.”

Zach wants to be an inventor and is enthusiastic about his new educational adventure.

“I’m going to invent a machine that goes round your house and mows lawns electronically.”

Sandy says the RNZBF is a really good cause.

“People never know when they may need help from them – at any time or age you can lose your sight.”

Achieving important kidney health Rarely, do we get any nutritional advice for the benefit of our kidneys.

Your kidneys are the most important organ for controlling your fluid balance. If you had no kidneys, all the fluid you drink would accumulate in your blood and around your body cells. And all the waste products, normally excreted by the kidney, would stay inside you and poison you.

Kidney stress during many years can lead to a constant reduction of their ability to siphon excess fluid out of your body. All of the blood

in your body passes through your kidneys about 20 times an hour. The kidney main tasks are maintaining water balance; excreting toxins and waste products; regulating the levels of chemical substances, such as sodium, potassium and chloride; and adjusting the body’s acidalkaline balance.

In Eastern philosophy, they talk about the kidneys holding the chi (energy) of the body, so they believe keeping the organ strong and functioning optimally

is the key to maintaining great energy levels.

Some year-round care of the kidneys include chopped parsley in plentiful amounts; raw, or made as a tea; sliced root ginger, in cooking, or as a hot beverage; and ensuring regular water intake.

Former Otumoetai power lifter Graeme Gibson says it took him a while to adjust to his diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease.

With November 1-7 marking Parkinson’s Awareness Week, Graeme is sharing his personal battle.

Graeme’s journey began five years ago, when he and wife Kathryn went to Australia to live. Graeme worked as a builder – and first noticed “something was wrong” when he couldn’t hammer a nail.

“I couldn’t hit it, because I was shaking so much – that was the first real physical sign.”

There were other signs too – including the way he walked, which the couple say they initially didn’t associate with Parkinson’s disease. The 65-year-old says it took about a year for the doctor to confirm the diagnosis – and for the last four years he’s been learning to living with the disease.

“It wasn’t until I lost mobility in some of my fingers that the doctor and neurologist confirmed [it is] Parkinson’s,” says Graeme. “It was a bit of a shock. I think it’s taken me two years to adjust.”

For 10 years Graeme was a power lifter before moving to Australia in 2008. His accolades include being a number one power lifter – in his master one age group – in New Zealand and Oceania. Graeme stopped working as a builder in February to retire at the end of July.

Despite having Parkinson’s, Graeme still lifts weights at the gym and does “odd projects” around the house to keep occupied. The couple attend the under-65’s support meetings - organised by The Parkinson’s Society Tauranga - held every two months.

As result, Graeme and Kathryn encourage others to contact the society “because it takes away the unknown” of Parkinson’s disease, which is a progressive neurodegenerative condition. For information on what’s happening during awareness week email

Exercise’s crucial role in losing weight I want to explore with you the role of exercise in weight loss.

Dieting without exercise can result in losing up to 25 per cent of your weight loss in lean muscle mass – a key driver of your metabolic rate.

Exercise increases the body’s thermostat which results in an elevated metabolic rate of up to 2.5 times above its normal, for two-three hours post activity, which certainly helps in burning off those extra calories. Making exercise an essential part of any long-term weight loss plan doesn’t necessi-

tate donning the lycra and joining the gym, because the real key is to find an exercise form that both suits you and motivates you for long term compliance. Contrary to previous beliefs that exercise has to be continuous and aerobic, recent research tells us that a couple of informal 10min bursts during the day can be equally effective. To be clinical about this requires an assessment of

your current fitness level, along with a diet recall to establish some baseline data from which to formulate a plan.

“We have five new gardens to show people, we have two we haven’t used for a number of years; and we’ve a few favourites returning as well,” says Katikati Rotarian Murray Steward.

Showcasing gardens worked on by their owners for 20-odd years, to those taken over by newcomers, Murray says the ramble is a perfect opportunity for people to view gardens they otherwise may not see. “It’s your chance to do ‘the nosey’ – a Rotarian will be at each garden and we have refreshments available at Garden 13.”

Garden One is owned by Janefrey Lovie and Paul Goldfinch, newcomers to the district.

“They’ve just taken over their

garden and are putting their own stamp on it.” Garden 12, “a huge acreage of woodland”, owned by Elaine and George Van Dyke, will feature in the ramble for the first time. And Garden Seven, owned

by Mike Philo, lovingly showcases the gardening of his beloved wife Marie, who died this year. “Marie was a great gardener of heritage roses, which she transported to Ongare Point from Taranaki,” says Murray. “Mike is carrying on where she left off.”

Garden Four shows Mary-Anne’s oozing passion for gardening; and Rod’s keenness, as a Rotarian, to raise money for Katikati youth.

“All the money goes to youth and community projects in the Katikati area,” says Murray. “The event is not to be missed – it will go ahead “rain, hail or shine”.

Taking care when helping birds People are being asked to be careful when choosing whether or not to intervene if they come across baby birds that appear to be alone.

ARRC director Liza Schneider says spring and summer sees the wildlife centre inundated with baby birds brought in by caring people – but often the birds are better left alone.

nant cancers. They are less common in cats, but 85 per cent are the type that spread. Desexing dogs and cats before puberty markedly reduces the risk, which is one of the reasons we encourage speying female dogs and cats by six months of age.

In rats, mammary cancer is secondary to a tiny tumour in the brain, so desexing is not helpful.

Problems that develop with male dog‘s reproductive organs include cancers in the testicles, prostate and anus, and hernias. In entire (un-neutered) male dogs, the prostate enlarges during time, and can develop painful cysts and infections. As it swells, it can push up into the colon, or down onto the urethra, and make it difficult for the dog to toilet.

The good news is most of these problems can be prevented in pets. We recommend having your dog or cat desexed, unless you have a rock-solid breeding plan for your purebred. Have your pet checked out if you find any suspicious lumps, or if your male dog is having difficulty going to the toilet. In Ohauiti an enthusiastic bitzer named Wagmore is in trouble for chewing a rugby ball. He just wants to be an All Bark.

Len Brown’s dog is depressed and reported to be in counselling. She overheard a conversation in which Mrs Brown said: “If I catch you out with that bitch again, there’ll be big trouble...”

Help offered for Baxta Baxta the barking dog could soon find himself with a newly-approved family as Tauranga City Council sort through the numerous calls from people offering to take over care of the dog.

Last month, Maungatapu resident Kathryn Edwards was given a 30-day deadline to find a new home for Baxta, or she’d have to put down the labrador retriever boxer cross following the council receiving 14 noise complaints from neighbours.

Since then, the council has received six enquires looking to take the dog off Kathryn’s hands, after hearing about her predicament.

“They are all pretty much rural or small town areas, so they are all options. They are from Katikati right through to Te Puke basically,” says TCC animal services team leader Brent Lincoln.

Council staff are presenting the six options to Kathryn, who must make a decision before TCC’s 30-day period ends.

How to tame a passionate chewer Q: My dog has turned one, and suddenly taken it upon himself to chew things – such as destroying his bed. He doesn’t chew anything and then will suddenly attack his bed, or the hose pipe.

Why is this? And what can I do about it?

A: Young dogs love to play and they can make a game out of just about anything, such as chewing a leaf, a tissue, or your new shoes. This is part of what being a dog is all about, and it’s what we love about them.

Young dogs will sometimes incorporate such things as surprise attacks on objects and other predatory behaviour into their play. As long as these displays are just games and aren’t aggressive then you will just need to keep the play structured and safe.

To encourage this,

ensure you are engaging in daily play activities with your dog using toys.

This will show your dog what he can chew; and it also encourages him to seek out play with you, rather than finding something to destroy on his own.

For each play session, give him instructions at the beginning and end using commands reserved only for these play sessions. Such as “playtime” and “all done”. Without these daily play sessions, your dog will find something that does guarantee your attention. Such as retrieving your socks, or destroying his bed.

When your dog is engaging in destructive behaviour, don’t laugh even if it is amusing, and simply redirect his attention onto one of the chew toys used in the play sessions.

Show him these are more fun than the destructive behaviour. Remember, if you’re not fun he will find something that is, and don’t encourage high intensity play, as this can teach rough play.

Things like the garden hose are not toys, so don’t ever use them in that way with your dog, and this includes squirting him with it.

Wheels turning on iconic event Organisers of the Wheels on Mainstreet classic motoring show are already starting to plan next year’s Labour Weekend event following a hugely successful display on Saturday.

The event, organised jointly by the National Street Rod Association Tauranga Area and Mount Mainstreet, is believed to

have attracted more than 10,000 people to the Mount and 300 vehicles.

NSRA Tauranga delegate Straw Lye says he was still tallying up the total rods, custom and classic cars, trucks and bikes when The Weekend Sun went to print and signals he’s very optimistic in continuing to grow it to become an iconic event.

“Everyone has been telling me how great it was, which is fantastic, and even though numbers were boosted with the national NSRA event [attracting 60 extra cars], I’m sure we’ll at least hold the numbers next year, as the reputation grows.”

The event, which attracted 163 cars at its debut last year, was held in conjunction with the NSRA’s annual national convention this year, but will return to being run just as a Tauranga showcase in 2014.

Straw is delighted with feedback from the Whangamata Beach Hop organisers, who told him the Mount event is “a must see”.

Mount Mainstreet manager Leanne Brown is looking forward to coming up with exciting ideas to expand the event, saying it’s a great way to promote the area.

She is also pleased the following days were very busy for retailers.

Speedway fans were also treated to a great opening night to the summer season on Saturday. ASB Baypark speedway manager Roger Bailey is thrilled with the opening night’s successful turnout.

New child restraint law starts today

Top sprint car driver Rodney Wood with Perry Keyte QSM following a spin at the speedway season’s opening night on Saturday.

Sprinting ahead at speedway Welcome Bay stalwart Perry Keyte surprised a few people when he traded his wheelchair for a souped-up sprint car at Baypark Speedway on Saturday.

After years of tireless work giving to his community, Perry was recently awarded the Queen’s Service Medal. But the man, best known for his efforts setting up and running the Welcome Bay Community Centre, showed he is also a petrol-head at heart on opening night of the speedway season when he took to the track in a sprint car.

“I used to race stock cars and I had always wanted to drive a sprint car. It was always about going fast,” says Perry, who was given a chance to tick it off his bucket list when he recently met Baypark Speedway ambassador Peter Harford.

Peter organised for Perry to race

in the speedway’s two-seater sprint car, but while it didn’t go entirely to plan, breaking down after a few laps, Perry says it was still a great buzz.

“He [top sprint driver Rodney Wood] didn’t really get it up and whistling along.

They don’t have a speedo in there, so I’m not sure how fast it was, but it was getting up there,” says Perry, who is excited about having another ride when it’s fixed.

Perry got a taste for speedway as a Cambridge mechanic in the 1970s, when he was given a chance to drive an old Dodge. He soon had his own car competing at Hamil-

ton’s old Forest Lake track, but its closure prompted him to shift to Tauranga to race at the old Baypark speedway.

“That was the only reason I shifted over here. Speedway – once you get hooked on it – it’s quite addictive.”

An accident paralysing Perry ended his racing – but saw him to pour his energy into the Spinal Cord Society, then the Welcome Bay community. Describing himself as a bad speedway spectator, “I get too frustrated”, Perry expects to return to ASB Baypark regularly “now I’ve got the adrenaline going”.

From today, the mandatory age for children required to use an approved child restraint increases from five to seven years old. Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says police will be focussing on checking child restraints in the next few weeks, following the change.

“We’ll obviously be providing a small window of grace, but after a week or two we will be issuing infringment notices. In this day and age there is no excuse for not having a child restraint.

Mini riders chasing dirt glory After a busy season of competitions, Tauranga’s top young dirt riders are heading north to compete in the mini motocross nationals in Waitoki, north of Auckland.

Tauranga Motorcycle Club treasurer Nicki Meredith says its mini riders (aged four to 11) have had a good season competing at many events; and there are

high hopes for this weekend’s KTM NZ Mini Motocross Nationals.

For many of the riders, it will be their second time at the nationals, after the club sent its first contingent last year in what Nicki says was a good debut.

This weekend’s national competition, hosted by the North Harbour Mini Motocross Club, will test seven of the Bay’s top riders in deciding the country’s top young riders.

Two of the riders who are picked to

do well are Shelby Cately and Wade Meredith, both of whom Nicki is labelling as “serious contenders”.

Eleven-year-old Shelby, Tauranga’s top young female rider, will be racing in the trail 7-11 year class – is a “pocket rocket who doesn’t shy away from the competition,” says Nicki. Her reputation was confirmed earlier this year when she

became ‘Queen of the North’ winning the all-girls race at the King of the North event – then again last weekend when she convincingly won all three races in the trail 7-11 year class at Taupo’s Huka Honda Labour Weekend Extravaganza.

Another rider with good chances at the nationals is Wade Meredith, who finished second in the MX 50cc 6-8 year class at Taupo.

Wade’s win followed a close duel with Invercargill rider Jack Symon – with the final places based on lap times after both finished with a first, second and third placing.

Wade’s podium finish follows a successful season with the eightyear-old finishing top in the class in the Taupo, Rotorua and Whakatane club race series.

Unchained passion – hire a hobbyist Saw doctor by day, sculptor by night.

Aside from the sharp edged tools there is little that connects Raymond Schroder’s two interests – but research suggests his passion for hobbies could be making him a more valuable employee.

In the year since Raymond joined the Tauranga Gem and Mineral Club, he has learned about all sorts of rocks and gems, mastered cutting techniques, and recently completed his first sculpture – an impressive large chain of greenstone.

Aside from using his creativity, and completing

Raymond’s boss Graeme Steel, from Supersaws, is so impressed by Raymond’s carving he called The Weekend Sun to let us know about his talent.

Graeme agreed with the research, saying it is clear Raymond’s passion for making has benefitted his work, developing Raymond some fine-hand skills and a dogged determination to complete challenging projects.

“I think it goes both ways – his carving benefits from his work and his saw doctoring benefits from his hobbies.

Employment coach Joyce Russell encourages everyone to make time for a hobby, saying along with relieving stress, hobbies can boost work performance if they improve decision-making skills, creativity and confidence.

After previous passions for cars, then model aircraft, Raymond got involved in gems, minerals and lapidary when he felt he’d achieved everything with his previous interests.

“I had built them, burned them, broken them – felt I had pretty much done everything with model aircraft.”

Raymond plans to enter the chain in next year’s National Gem, Fossil and Mineral Show in Tauranga.

Asked what he loves about actively pursuing a hobby, Raymond says it’s great to be learning something new “and it’s also a good social outlet”.

Voters don’t have Green pedestal Dr Ian McLean, an unsuccessful candidate in the local body elections, asks why neither himself, or the other Green candidate, was successful in being elected to the Tauranga ward seat of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council.

Your sub editor for The Weekend Sun has actually provided Dr McLean with the answer. Dr McLean’s letter (Friday, October 25), has the headline ‘Put our environment first’.

It is largely this attitude that guarantees Dr McLean a position in the ‘also-rans’.

Voters will never place ‘the environment’ on the pedestal that Dr McLean and his Green colleagues continue to demand. Voters will never bow to Green overstatement and Green fear tactics first.

Voters worldwide are now seeing the established Green positions on

the state of the planet have been wildly oversold.

For example, the Green position on global warming/ climate change and readers’ attitudes to it have been widely discussed on these pages.

The Green position on nuclear energy should also be scrutinised.For many decades, Green propaganda presented nuclear power stations as ticking nuclear bombs, ignoring the fact electricity generation by all other means, including hydo and certainly coal mining, killed thousands of people every year.

The contortions and difficulties faced by the Greens over nuclear energy led Mark Lynas, writing for the UK Daily Mail, to say: “You mustn’t believe Green zealots - I was one”. He also added: “Greenpeace routinely inflates the death toll for the 1986 Chernobyl disaster by a factor of 1000 (the true total is likely to have been less than

50), in order to stoke fears about atomic energy.”

His colleague George Monbiot - a Green activist writing for the UK Guardian then confessed: “Over the last fortnight I’ve made a deeply troubling discovery. The anti-nuclear movement, to which I once belonged, has misled the world about the impacts of radiation on human health. The claims we have made are ungrounded in science, unsupportable when challenged, and wildly wrong. We have done other people, and ourselves, a terrible disservice”.

Rather than express dismay and puzzlement over his non-election, Dr McLean should work within his political organisations to restore public trust and Green credibility Over the top hyperbole and blatant fear tactics have proved to be an impediment for the Green political cause; and Green credibility has plummeted. The once-powerful Green wave continues to recede very rapidly towards irrelevancy.

Reward for Motiti helpers small to none I read with amazement the R Prince’s letter ‘Rena fund: Not everyone’s rewarded’ (Weekend Sun, October 18).

If only he knew ? Well, this is what I know for sure’. The $1 million Mediterranean Shipping Company’s Rena Recovery Fund gifted the Motiti Island $366,000.

This was divided between three areas, the three sets of owners on Motiti Island - the south-end avocado block, the Wills’ middle block and the north-end Maori block.

As there are so many owners, 4000-plus, on this block their

payout remains in a trust on the mainland – no-one benefits.

Should any of this group, apply for the money, it will take time plus the expenses.Maybe they, the Maori block recipients, will get $10 each – wow what a reward.

These amazing 27 people that R Prince talks about, which is actually a group of 25, worked their butts off during the days, weeks and months following the Rena disaster to assist in all ways.

They cooked, they rescued, they cleaned up, they offered hospitality to all who arrived on their island,

from dignitaries downwards.

Maritime New Zealand paid fortnightly visits to Motiti Island’s Maori-end to give updates on the disaster situation for 18 months.

The New Zealand Government paid Maritime New Zealand experts great salaries and housing, but did not see fit to tell these island folk they were entitled to disaster insurance copensation.

Wow - what an oversight.

Mayoral Powers: Blissfully wasting ratepayer dosh Playing puppetry By way of an analogy, the Hundred Days wars, circa 1815, saw Napoleon exiled, so isn’t a little bit ominous for our incumbent Tauranga City Mayor with his 100 days’ Tauranga identity search?

Whatever view you take, Stuart Crosby is a minority Mayor, who should, having regard to past performances, confine himself solely to ceremonial duties like cutting gala ribbons, public speaking, or opening new facilities and so forth.

Tauranga voters have overwhelmingly spelt out to Mr Crosby that he no longer has any real mandate to determine Tauranga City Council’s fiscal policy.

Invoking the recently-increased Local Government Mayoral Powers, to appoint TCC committee members (seemingly without inclusive consultation involving all current councillors), looks like a forlorn attempt to play the puppetmaster and retain control of the ailing Tauranga council circus.

The sooner Tauranga gets Local Government Commissioners appointed to run Tauranga’s affairs and sidelines Mr Crosby, and the manipulative TCC bureaucracy, the better for all Tauranga residents who voted overwhelmingly for a change - not more of the same old garbage.

For the avoidance of any doubt, Mr. Crosby received only 10,590 votes from the 84,672 enrolled electors being 12.50 percent support. And only 10,590 out of the 32,033 votes actually received, representsonly 33 per cent of the votes cast.

Even the doubters should be able to work that little disparity out.

I think newly-elected Western Bay of Plenty District councillor Graeme Crossman’s resignation due to business commitments shows he has a care factor of zero when it comes to wasting ratepayers’ money.

His resignation, just 10 days after being elected, has forced a by-election in the Western Bay council’s Maketu-Te Puke ward at a cost to ratepayers of a reported $28,700 plus GST - or $2.10 plus GST per elector.

While I’m glad Western Bay Mayor Ross Paterson and his

council has had the sense to combine this byelection with that of filling the last seat on the Waihi Beach Community Board, Mr Crossman has still cost the district an unnecessary expense.

Now it’s been announced he’s heading to China this month to be a guest speaker at an Agricultural Fair.

Surely, he’d have known he’d possibly be going on this overseas jaunt before the local body elections closed?

Plus, other options do exist for councillors who need to take care

of their own business or family interests – Graeme could have taken a six-month leave of absence.

He’s also reported saying he was “Blissfully unaware” of a 25-day councillor induction until after the election.

Well, this shows his willingness to learn about his new job.

This willy nilly wasting of ratepayers’ money has to stop – especially by those elected to protect funds and spend them wisely on behalf of us all.

Maybe a law should be passed to fine candidates who pointlessly waste ratepayers and taxpayers’ money when it comes to elections?

I’m sure if their finances were threatened they make twice twice about wasting the collective’s cash.

Skills ignored?

On Tauranga City Council appointments.

Councillor Rick Curach has 12 years’ experience, while councillors Bill Grainger and Catherine Stewart both have six years’ know-how. But they’re all given menial tasks by re-elected Tauranga City Mayor Stuart Crosby.

Instead, he gives some of the seven new councillors - all with a collective zero local government political experience - plum committee chairmanships.

Return democracy

In response to RE Stephens’ ‘Cutbacks should be for all’ in last week’s Weekend Sun, he is absolutely correct.

The reason being we don’t have a democratic government that cares for the general welfare of all the NZ people anymore. NZ’s government is just a company; and therefore has to produce a profit/loss each year.

Look at our traffic police. For example, their goal is revenue collecting. Our councils are running up debt; and none of these acts are by consent of NZ people.

These entities in our country are controlled from overseas. One entity is the United Nations, which wants disharmony in all our countries.

Every country in the world has a civil war going on (either ethnic or religious), which is easy to incite.

While these civil wars carry on it keeps everyone distracted, while decreasing the world’s population.

The One World government can get on with their other agendas. The UN Agenda 21 is one already in progress in our country. Check out all the smart growth, smart card, and other unitary plans.

Maori do not see they’re being used and manipulated while on their own crusade against 85 per cent of New Zealanders, wanting un-ending Treaty claims and selfrule - creating division and disharmony.

The UN has encouraged them; allowed them to sign the Declaration on Indigenous Rights in 2010, with no mandate from our government or people, which says they have the right to autonomy or self-government.

Folks you need to put your hand up and stop the apathy that’s allowing this to happen in NZ. Somehow, we have to claim back our democracy. A binding referendum would be a start.

An inexpensive, natural solution is to eat two Brazil nuts a day.

Brazil nuts come from South America and have high selenium levels. Selenium is a trace element at very low levels in New Zealand soils. After about two months, peoples’ blood levels rise to a healthy level, which is 1.6-2.0 micromol/lt. Two women I know well, and I have discussed this matter with, both have assured me even after some years of good selenium levels they continue to keep their levels up.

They do this for “good hair” and the range of health benefits an adequate level ensures.

Rental cars offer rough ride Copper spray not answer In reply to W Paiuker’s letter ‘Friendly service with a yes’ in last week’s Weekend Sun, my experience has been 100 per cent the opposite.

My wife and I have travelled many times through Britain using rental cars from Avis, Hertz and Budget.

Every time we’ve had excellent service and have been upgraded. We travel with a debit card with pound sterling and a visa. The visa card is needed for car rental in case you’re unable to return the car with a full tank.

This year, for the first time we used Europcar. We booked early in New Zealand via our travel agent and paid for two fully-insured one-way rentals from Manchester

Airport and Newcastle upon Tyne, both with two drivers.

Arriving at Manchester they wouldn’t supply a car unless we reinsured it, paid the one-way rental and second driver supplement for a second time. We decided this was cheaper than walking away.

We finally agreed; then had to stand for 1.5 hours with no cars available in the class booked, but the car yard was full.

We were told it could be hours before a car was available. We found none were returning that day, in that class.

I suggested an upgrade but was told it is company policy not to give upgrades. The assitant got a sister

company’s cars switched over to Europcar to get us away.

The second rental again caused grief, and after a heated discussion we had to again forgo two drivers and a one-way rental supplement.

Back in New Zealand we found Europcar UK had withdrawn more money from our account.

The matter was taken up by our travel agent and the Europcar UK company again withdrew money out of our account rather than credit us, as requested. It is now six months and we’re still owed more than $1000 by Europcar UK. My recommendation to anyone travelling to the UK, is sidestep the Europcar.

Recently, I visited an old mate who happened to live on a kiwifruit orchard. I asked him about what they were spraying to combat the Psa-V virus that has almost wiped out their orchard.

When he told me it was Cupric Sulphate (CuS04) alarm bells started ringing off in my head, because I have a scientific background specialising in chemical compounds.

If the kiwifruit industry believes copper-based sprays are harmless to human beings, and to the land they live on, then you have been badly misled.

Even in small amounts the chemical builds up over time in the body and in the land.

Would I let my children play in an orchard sprayed with the copper-based sprays being applied in staggering amounts on orchards all across Tauranga? Never ever.

Selectively hiding things John?

In regard to The Weekend Sun’s last Rogers Rabbits column ‘Spies, pies, spines and whines’, I'm just thinking about the line “If you've got nothing to hide...”

It’s an interesting question. Mr Key certainly believed he had something to hide a few years ago, didn’t he? Mr Key and Mr Banks.

It’s obvious, isn’t it, that he believed talking with Mr Banks, in the Tea Tape Scandal, was a criminal offence. Otherwise, he would’ve welcomed the publication of the full discussion.

We know about West Auckland cop Peter Pakau’s adventures with selective enforcement of the law, after being accused of in May of making methamphetamine and collecting debt on behalf of gang members.

What chance is there that the GCSB klutzes will be any better?

The tribal elite have a list of demands and if refused, the ‘racist’ card is pulled out of the hat.

To our detriment, the ‘R’ word immediately shuts down dialogue.

Tommy Kapai wrote a wonderful article in 2009 about a white American actor who asked: “Why is it that only whites can be racist?”

Mr. Kapai turned it around to a New Zealand scenario. To make a precis his article, “You pass me on the street and sneer, you call me pakeha, honky, white boy and that’s okay. But when I call you hori, nigger or curry muncher you call me a racist.

You have Maori Television but if we had White Entertainment Television, or any organisation for whites’ only to “advance” our lives, we’d be racists.

You rob us, rape us and shoot at us, but if a Pakeha police officer shoots a black gang member, or drug runner posing a threat to society, you call him a racist.

You have sports awards and tertiary scholarships exclusive to Maori. But if there was a college that gave money to whites’ only, we would be called racists.

I have kept this memorable article for a long time now.

Mr Kapai ended with some very astute thoughts - “For my two bob’s worth, whatever colour we were born with, racism has no respect for religious freedom or the colour of a man's skin. It exists because we allow it to exist”.

MAN OF STEEL Starring: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe - Dir: Zack Snyder Everybody has their own verdict on the latest Superman reboot. I have very mixed feelings.

But it is Superman, so I guess you gotta take a look.

Once again this is an origin story, one which realises how familiar the basic building blocks are by now. So it tries to do it from a different perspective, giving a little more backstory about Krypton and a different motivation for Shannon’s General Zod to eventually seek revenge. Poor Russ - as Supe’s real daddy - is saddled with a pile of exposition and generally crap dialogue (he gets to emote wildly on lines such as “But Zod – this is madness!”), while Kevin Costner, who doesn’t appear to age at all in the film, is stern but loving earth dad and Diane Lane is earth mum. (Elsewhere

Lawrence Fishburne is Perry White and Adams a completely undeveloped Lois Lane. Jimmy Olsen is thankfully absent.)

There are some fun set-pieces of Supes being super and a lot of guff as the military struggle to trust him after Zod and his minions arrive for the big dust-up. Said final barney is actually the movie’s low-point as vast swathes of Metropolis are destroyed at boring length causing such a massive casualty toll that nobody thinks to mention it afterwards.

Dunno. It could have done with a little humour. I counted one joke. Batman earned its seriousness. This thinks seriousness equals importance. Wrong. You just want to slap it and say “lighten up.”

Sometimes smart execution can get the most out of an initially dodgy-seeming premise. The Purge postulates a world in which there is no crime. Except for one night of the year. On that night you can commit any crime you want with impunity. This, supposedly, allows people an outlet for their apparently unstoppable natural aggression. OK. Silly idea. But, as Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey lock their family into their fortified suburban mansion for the night, the filmmakers find sufficient complexity and moral interest, as well as general nerve-tingling tension to sustain events, as urban siege escalates into violent home invasion.

A concert for cancer Tauranga man David Shannon is hosting a show on November 2 at Brewers Bar in an effort to raise money for cancer research.

David was living in Melbourne for eight years when he met his friend Nicko Lunardi. When he was 11 years old Nicko’s 15-year-old sister was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma.

Now his sister is clear of cancer – Nicko, 26, is riding in the Ride to Conquer Cancer on November 16-17 in an effort to raise funds for cancer research in Australia and New Zealand. Nicko asked David if he could host a show to help raise funds also.

Spring seasonal exhibition

Visitors browse artists’ works at last year’s Spring Seasonal Exhibition.

This weekend, the Tauranga Society of Artists Inc is holding its annual Spring Seasonal Exhibition 9.30am-5pm Saturday, November 2, and 9.30am-4pm Sunday, November 3.

The event’s venue is once again the Tauranga Contract Bridge Club, on Cherrywood’s Ngatai Rd. The location is central, near the busy Ngatai and Otumoetai roads roundabout, and offers plenty of free parking around the building.

Exhibiting artists include well-known creators to those just starting out in their artistic careers. No matter what their experience, they’re all talented members of the Tauranga Society of Artists, who have been working towards the Spring Seasonal Exhibition, by painting and lovingly creating new works.

Last year, 46 artists exhibited 137 artworks for sale, and the society is con-

fident this year’s numbers will be similar.

This means once again there will be an amazing array of colour to choose from, for that special piece to hang in your home, office, or showroom. There will be a wide variety of works exhibited of different types and styles in oils, water colours, acrylic, pastel and mixed media.

Entry is by gold coin donation, EFTPOS will be available, and pieces will cover a wide range of prices.

You are encouraged to take advantage of viewing this year’s wonderful exhibition and to enjoy the creativity and experience of it all. Come along and colour your day.

Scottish sounds singing out Direct from triumphant Asian and Chinese performances, mother and daughter duo Mo Ghra, made up of Celine and Samantha Toner, will be performing songs from their debut album ‘Alba to Aotearoa’ at Tauranga’s Holy Trinity Church later this month.’

Celine has travelled the world performing her haunting take on Scottish and Celtic classics, gracing such stages as the Grand Ole Opry, the Melbourne concert hall, the Sydney Opera House and the Bob Hope Community Center in the US. Meanwhile her daughter Samantha, in her short career, has had the priviledge to support both

Rod Stewart and Sting at New Zealand’s iconic Mission Concert, as well as performances in London.

For their performances, Celine and Samantha are joined by excellent musicianship of guitarist Scottish vocalist Peter Skandera and multi-instrumentalist Dave Maybee.

Melbourne Cup action Back for another round of Melbourne Cup action – Greer’s Gastro Bar annual Melbourne Cup celebration is set to be a crowd pleaser.

The event next week boasts fun, food and all-round racing action – with the race playing live on the big screen at 5pm.

Owner Nancy Hogg invites residents to mark their diary and join them for the Cup celebrations on Tuesday, November 5.

Opening early for the occasion, from 11.30am people can join the event – where $6 Heinekens will

be on tap all day, along with $6 glasses of bubble and complimentary nibbles from 4pm.

People can dress up in Melbourne Cup style, with prizes for the best dressed.

Nancy says people make a great effort with their outfits, and always enjoy the festivities.

Outward Bound opportunities Every year, the Acorn Foundation, through the generosity of its donors, offers scholarships to enable young people from the Western Bay of Plenty to benefit from Outward Bound.

Applicants can choose to apply for a three-week Mind Body Soul course (16-18 years), or the Classic course (18-26 years).

Leanne Smith, who received a scholarship from the Acorn Foundation Bob Granger Fund to assist her, says the course is life changing. “Those three weeks brought motivation, satisfaction, respect and an open mind to the world we live in. I still remember to take a minute each day to reflect on all the great things that I have achieved and will continue to achieve. I find this helpful in keeping a positive attitude when things get a little tough.”

Outward Bound assists thousands of New Zealanders to discover their potential with courses based on learning through experience. The courses push young people’s limits, through physical activities where there are real consequences – including sailing, kayaking, rock climbing, high ropes, tramping, solo experience and more.

Members of the Bay Association of Sea Kayakers recently experienced a very successful kayaking forum at the Tauranga Coastguard Sulphur Point headquarters.

Currently, BASK has 85 members and nearly 30 per cent attended – covering subjects such as trip planning, navigation, weather, surf and hypothermia.

The event ties in with a BASK rescue session, which was held earlier this year at the Otumoetai Pools, and complements planned surf sessions and novice days set for January and February next year.

The association provides all of these activities free to its members, giving good value for the membership fee of only $25 for singles and $40 for doubles.

Currently, BASK has a trip on offer every weekend; and during the last three months members have enjoyed trips on the Kaituna, Mokau and Waihou rivers, trips to Whanarua, Raglan, Lake Taupo, Slipper Island – as well as many trips on the Tauranga Harbour.

Agatha Christie’s on-stage classic intrigues Detour Theatre’s latest production ‘Appointment with Death’ comes from the pen of the world’s favourite murder mystery writer – Agatha Christie.

“Christie’s plays are tremendous fun for audience and actors alike,” says director Kim Williamson. “Filled with intrigue, romance, revenge, vivid characters, and of course murder, this has all the qualities of Agatha Christie murder mysteries that we all love. Add to this the exotic Middle Eastern location – and it’s a real treat.”

It’s 1945 and Jerusalem’s King Solomon Hotel has seen some strange travellers in its time, but none so strange as those who are now visiting.

Among them is an elderly American invalid and her stepchildren. To the casual onlooker they are models of devotion, but the reality is very different, and one of them has an appointment with death. Filled with colourful characters and intriguing mystery this show represents Agatha Christie at her riveting best.

“A surprising facet to the play is that it has a different murderer. Agatha

Christie made sure that audience members, who had read her book of the same name, would still be in for a surprise at the theatre. What a wonderfully wicked woman she was,” laughs Kim. In Detour Theatre’s production, 17 actors take to the stage, playing an assortment of eccentric characters including a charming French psychiatrist (Chris Parnell), a disturbed American family (Jaden McLeod, Diana Corrigan, Katherine Knight, Sam Dowdall, Gin Mabey), a Jordanian police colonel (Geoff Herd) and his Bedouin tracker (Bob Hewat), various eccentric hotel guests (Jamie Parkes, Kate Akers, Philippa Powell, Devon Williamson, Jane McKenna, Daniel McKenna), Arab tour guides (Michael Morris and Flynn Harris) and a charming young doctor (Sarah Oemcke).

The Detour Theatre is a delightful 75-seat theatre located in a lovingly renovated 100-year-old church at the Historic Village. The show runs from November 13-10.

The key to understanding the signs of the times Jesus rebuked the religious leaders of His time, because they could interpret the signs in the skies relating to the weather, yet they could not discern or interpret the signs of the times happening around them with regards to God’s promises concerning the first advent of the Messiah.

In fact, Jesus called them hypocrites (play actors), because of their blindness to the signs of the times (Luke 12:56).

We will, likewise, be blind to the signs of the times relating to the events preceding the rapture of the Church and the second-coming of Christ, if we do not understand the place of

Israel in God’s prophetic timetable. Israel has been called God’s end-time clock (and Jerusalem, the clock’s second hand).

This is because biblical prophecy relating to the end-times requires restoration of Israel as a nation; and restoration of Israel to the land God promised to them, by way of an everlasting covenant.

The miracle of the establishment of Israel, as a nation in their own land on May 14, 1948, in fulfilment of biblical prophecy, set things in motion for the outworking of end-time events.

For example, the end-

time events of Ezekiel 38 and 39, including the alignment of specific nations against Israel in the last days, requires a restored Israel back in their own land.

A biblical understanding of Israel, with regards to God’s end-time purposes, also confronts the spirit of anti-Semitism – which is prevalent in the nations, and sadly, in areas of the Church.

Be encouraged to search the Scriptures for yourself, and to ask God for understanding about the signs of the times; especially that which relates to Israel.
