For a couple of weeks now, we’ve been warning of the dangers that lurk at the coastline and sadly, after our headline last week about sharks circling, the country has witnessed its first fatal shark attack in nearly 40 years.

The frenzy of public attention needs to be tempered with some commonsense here.

Shark attacks are very, very rare.

While Auckland’s western beaches have been closed and a huge media circus has enveloped Muriwai, let’s not lose sight of the fact that this was probably a one off, freak event.

That is little consolation to the swimmer and his family, but we need to put sharks in perspective.

A far greater killer on those beaches is the surf itself.

Hundreds of people die around the coast of New Zealand, not from predation by large animals, but from their own stupidity – plunging into the surf like lemmings and expecting surf lifesavers to haul them out.

You don’t see beaches closed for days every time there’s a drowning.

Nor do we often see beaches closed when there’s a risk of drowning. Yet the risk of drowning is almost constantly present. The priorities are pretty screwed up.

There is a far greater risk on the road. You are far more likely to find your demise on State Highway 2 heading to the beach, than in the water. And far, far, far more likely to die on the roads than be killed by a shark.

You are more at threat from being struck by a falling hot air balloon, or clinging to the remains of a hot air balloon, than you are from being killed by a shark.

The chances are greater of being hit by a stray bullet ricochet from Tuhoe activist gun training exercises, than perishing in a

We don’t see beaches being closed because of too much sun, and therefore the high risk of melanoma. Yet the cancer takes thousands of times more lives of beachgoers every year than shark attacks – or hot air balloons.

The RR approach to avoiding melanoma and shark attacks is to wear a wetsuit but try not to look like a seal. The wetsuits help ward off melanoma, but don’t seem so effective against sharks… due to wetsuits making people look more like seals.

Seals have a lot to answer for. We should all club together and do something about it. They are the primary reason, as we understand it, that people get attacked by sharks.

At all times in the water, try not to look like a seal.

Especially, do not slap your flippers together and bark while balancing a ball on your head.

This could result in an alternate fate. You might end up in Marineland. Or even in public office. We have some lovely examples of performing seals running this town.

Treasured culture

Meanwhile, speaking of performing seals, Tame Iti has finally been released from jail, hopefully to continue his sterling work promoting his treasured culture of bushcraft and firearms.

It is good to see someone putting some effort into promoting the ancient ways with firearms, clearly a little-known or understood Maori tradition.

Milk smash

Other performers have been making a mess in supermarkets.

Streaking and planking have had their day. The latest fad, I’m reliably informed, is milk smash.

Apparently, young people set up a camera then pretend to fall over in supermarkets and grocery stores with a two litre bottle of milk, aiming to film the most dramatic and spectacular event.

I’m not sure who does the judging, but I bet there are some very unhappy store owners out there.

Consider this then, while next on the roads of our region, fearing for your life.

Costly waste Bird droppings costing thousands Tauranga City Council might have to get its hands dirty if it wants to clean up the bird-related cleaning costs in Grey Street, according to one councillor.

After the last group of Queen Palm trees and Illawarra Flame trees were planted two years ago, Grey Street has been pelted with soaring cleaning costs due to an influx of birds.

Councillor Catherine Stewart says when the trees were first planted cleaning costs sat at $3000 annually. They now sit at an estimated $15,000 because of

the extensive bird droppings.

“I was walking around the city with Murray [TCC solid waste operations manager Murray Kliskey] and thought at the time some of the footpaths looked pretty dirty,” she says.

It is understood Grey Street requires one of the highest levels of cleaning in Tauranga, she says.

A Tauranga City Council spokesperson says it currently costs $262 a week to clean up the Grey Street area. During the peak bird season – September through to the end of November – the area is cleaned three times a week at an estimated $10,218 cost for the 13 week period. Catherine believes

the council is now being forced to look into a sensible solution after agreeing to install the trees two years ago.

“It does not seem logical to create the problem and then have to pay for it as well.

“Those trees might not be appropriate in that area with all the birds. We might have to put in some pretty flowers to sort out this problem.”

Murray told The Weekend Sun he is not at liberty to discuss the situation further.

Car fire sparks Welcome Bay blaze

A fire in a car parked in a Welcome Bay field is believed to have caused the blaze that spread through scrub land on Wednesday.

Greerton Fire Brigade was called to a car fire near Ranginui Road just before 1.45pm, which quickly spread to nearby scrub.

At its peak, the scrub fire covered about 2000 square metres and was earlier believed to have been heading towards homes.

Greerton firefighters were the first on the scene followed by further firefighters from Mount Maunganui, Tauranga and Greerton.

Missing without a trace People can go missing every day and nine times out of ten they usually return or are found within hours of their loved ones reporting them missing.

However, there are a handful of people who are never found and are gone without a trace.

This can be said for three Western Bay of Plenty people who have gone missing in the area in the last nine years.

Lindsay John Duff was last seen in his home in Tauranga on June 23, 2003.

Police say he was sighted in Rotorua on June 25, but he has not been seen or heard from since.

Robert Te Paewhenua Roberts is another person who disappeared in the WBOP. He went missing from the Kaimai Ranges on November 30, 2004.

Police says several witnesses saw Robert’s Fulton Hogan van drive off the lookout of the Kaimai Ranges.

The van was located 250m

down the bank but there was no sign of Robert.

Detective inspector Tim Anderson says there is no particular length of time people have to be gone before they are deemed missing.

“It’s all dependant on the circumstances in regards to that individual. It can be anything from one hour for a missing child and upwards from there.

Most missing persons are located by our frontline crews within a matter of hours.

“Once a report is received, police make basic enquiries into the whereabouts and movements of that person. If it’s deemed to be suspicious then police escalate our response in relation to that particular set of circumstances as known to police at that time.”

never able to find ‘Siggy’.

Senior sergeant Rob Glencross was the officer in charge of the case at the time and he says the case is still very much open.

“It will remain open until such time as we are able to determine what happened to Mr Newman.

“My understanding is he has not been declared dead.”

There are a number of ways a missing person can be declared dead, the most common being the Coroner holds an inquest and makes the determination based on the evidence he hears.

However, Rob says parties

such as family members are also able to make applications to the court to have this determination made.

“As far as I am aware this hasn’t been done,” Rob says, talking about Siggy Newman.

“Although I do understand they have applied to the court in regards to his assets to assist in the on-going care of his two boys.”

A fire that broke out in a Welcome Bay home on Monday night is not being treated as suspicious.

The fire started in a single storey property on Waitaha Road around 7.45pm sending black smoke throughout the neighbourhood.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Nicole Bernard said firefighters received a call to a fire in a bedroom at a private property.

Two crews from Greerton and one from Tauranga station were called, as well as St John Ambulance who treated one person for smoke inhalation.

Around 11.30pm on Thursday, February 21, a person or group of people attempted to take a camera from the side of one of the classrooms at the school.

Teacher Ben Brock says the children were devastated to arrive at school the following morning and see the wormcan you put it ons on the ground.

The students’ worm farm had been used as a ladder to reach the mounted camera.

“They emptied all the worms and soil onto the ground and then dragged it round to one of the other classrooms and used it as a ladder up against the wall.

“They climbed on top of it and snipped the cable to the camera. They tried to cut open the metal cage that surrounds the camera and tried to take the camera but they didn’t manage to make the hole big enough, so they just left it as it was.”

The Government’s decision to switch taxi companies used to transport special-needs children to and from school has been labelled “a shambles” and “unprepared” by one Tauranga principal.

At the end of last year the Government decided to change taxi companies in Tauranga, central Auckland, the North Shore, Whangarei and South Auckland through a tender process.

Earlier this week, the Ministry of Education, who pay for taxis to and from school for some specialneeds students, admitted up to 400 special-needs students have been placed at risk following the decision.

Kaka Street Special School principal Barrie Wickens says the school has been faced with on-going concerns since the changeover at the beginning of the school term which he says the school was not informed about.

Sexual assault, stabbing in Merivale

Tauranga detectives are investigating two serious incidents in the Tauranga suburb of Merivale on Saturday night. The first is the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl in or around the Merivale School grounds. Detective Sergeant Ryan Yardley says a female made a complaint to police about an alleged assault on Saturday night.

The second is the stabbing of a 20-year-old man in Mansels Road late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Police say the man was allegedly stabbed in the side by another offender during a party at a private residence on the street.

St John Ambulance paramedics were called to the scene and transported the man to hospital.

Deadly dog virus outbreak

Tauranga dog owners are being warned as a fatal dog virus outbreak hits the Bay. The number of dogs suffering from parvovirus in three Tauranga suburbs is on the rise and veterinarians are asking dog owners to immunise their pets.

The virus, which can infect both dogs and puppies, attacks the intestines of the canine causing the dog to develop severe vomiting and dysentery. It also causes respiratory and cardiovascular failure in young puppies.

Greenpark School students are devastated that people attempted to steal a camera from their school, vandalising their worm farm in the process.

This morning when I got to school everyone was crowded around Room 11’s worms. The worms were panicking.

I could tell this because they were going crazy. The worm farm had been used for an attempted burglary. Someone wanted to steal the security camera from outside Room 14. They used the worm farm to stand on. They emptied the worms onto the ground. I felt very angry. I hope they survive. The people who did this are criminals. I hope they get punished.

Census collectors are charting new territory in the Western Bay as they head off the beaten path to count each and every one of us.

Rob says an example is Golden Sands School and the surrounding streets in Papamoa East which collectors are drawing maps of to plan for the next collection.

Visiting vessels at the port, or newly arrived yachts that are overnighting at the marina, are on the census hit list, but Rob is pleased no cruise ships are in port on the day.

“I was taken aback the council hadn’t put up notices. All they had to do was put up a paper notice on the Mount side and the Pilot Bay side that there were rabbit shootings.”

Mauao park ranger Mark Ray says they don’t tend to notify the public on the whereabouts of the contractor to ensure he is not followed.

“The pest control contractor rings police minutes before he enters and minutes after he leaves, as well as contacting myself and the camping ground.”

This was the contractor’s first of three monthly shoots following a reduction in visitor numbers during the summer period. The contractor wears a high visibility jacket while he is working.

After ringing police about the incident, it was explained to Mark the council has registered the shootings by a pest control contractor as part of their culling process.

“I guess it depends on one’s view of the public. If one’s view is of voyeurs then yes, they are right. However, if you’re more concerned about the public perception of safety, then they are 180 degrees wrong.”

Acroboaties putting on a show for Tauranga A pair of world-travelling French acroboaties make their second visit to Tauranga this weekend, with shows at the bridge marina beach from Friday until Sunday.

The show is named La Loupiote, after the 11m yacht that is both the stage and home of the performers, Franck Rabilier and Delphine Lechifflart.

The shows are suitable for audiences of all ages and last 20 minutes each. They are free, but

Community push needed for cycle trail

Tauranga’s cycling community is being urged to try and get the city’s failed cycle trail back on the beaten track of New Zealand’s iconic cycle trail.

After a failed proposal in 2009 when the New Zealand Cycle Trail project was first established, Tauranga was left out of the trail and Tauranga resident Jan Booysen says nobody has been willing to undertake the project since.

Jan, 52, says the 23 tracks throughout the country appear to be joint ventures between community groups and the Department of Conservation and Tauranga cyclists need to show initiative instead of putting the issue in the “too hard basket” – leaving a gaping hole in the New Zealand Cycle Trail.

“All we need are some people who have been involved in the process so far, and other interested parties, to see what can be salvaged from the situation. Even if we get half done, it’s a start.”

The proposed Tauranga route was to span 75 kilometres from Waihi to Tauranga, along the harbour side of Matakana Island. It would link into the national cycle trails designed to generate lasting economic, social and environmental benefits.

Since 2009, $50 million was approved by the government, along with an additional $30 million of co-funding, for the construction of the 23 premier trails.

agreed a meeting of interested parties is needed to discuss the options in moving forward.

“I’m absolutely certain it will be great for Tauranga. It’s just one of these things that needs a bit of marketing,” says Jan. “They have the motor trail on the other side of Opotiki and I think it would be a nice goal to meet up with that and link it all up with Waihi.”

Bruce agrees a big community push is needed to get the proposal back off the ground.

“We are thinking now to get to Omokoroa from Tauranga and from

But even without taking the gifts into account, the gallery is still in the black for the first six months, Tauranga City Council’s Projects and Monitoring Committee was told this week.

“We were given several gifts; some were very valuable,” says gallery manager Penny Jackson.

The gallery was gifted more than 40 works, including 39 by Nigel Brown and his partner Susan McLaughlin, which comprised woodcuts, silkscreen, lithographs, paintings and pencil drawings.

One-off artwork donations and loan forgiveness amounts to $195,442, plus a single $20,000

cash donation for artworks purchase boosted the gallery’s operational surplus for the six months to $250,127. The ‘normalised’ surplus for the six months is $34,685. It’s still above budget.

Revenue is $43,000, the budget estimate is $25,000.

But spending for the first six months was below budget because the $45,000 gallery repaint is now taking place in the second half of the financial year. Full year building expenses are likely to exceed budget.

Gallery trust audit committee chairman Gerald Gibbard says the surplus is a very credible result in the current economic environment, including coping with no inflation adjustment to the gallery’s operating grant, which remains at 2010 levels. He’s hoping the result for the full year is better than the $32,000 deficit that is forecast.

The only council numbers we seem to understand are our rates but by the time the notice arrives in our letterbox it is usually too late to do anything about it. The Western Bay of Plenty District Council is contemplating changes in our rates now, so what can we do about it now? This is the time to ask questions, listen to the answers and act. This is election year.

What do we know already? Last year our cost of living went up just under 2 per cent, the local government cost index went up 4 per cent and Western Bay gave itself another 4 per cent, a limit imposed on them by the government. The rate rise of over 9 per cent was shared unequally between urban and rural ratepayers, with some urban rates increasing over 16 per cent.

This year any increase will carry the same loading on urban ratepayers. Remember the mayor insisted that this was only a real rate rise of 1 per cent but, if it turns out to be the same amount again this year, some ratepayers will be paying over 30 per cent more on their rates than two years ago.

What do the figures look like? The cost of living again is just under 2 per cent. The local government cost index will still be about 4 per cent and it is up to the council to set an extra rate within the 4 per cent

cap they are allowed. I am sure that if they cut this extra payment down to 2 per cent the mayor will be claiming a real rate reduction of 2 per cent though your rates would have gone up an average of about 17 per cent in the two years.

But wait. There is more. Unfortunately there are extra pressures on council coffers this year. The Government has just given councils warning that they have to reduce their charges for financial contributions on new houses because these charges have been a significant barrier to affordable housing. The councils will have to turn to rates for more money.

This is at a time when so many councils would like to increase growth, which means more debt, more debt repayment and even more on the rates.

This is not good news for the Bay. One university professor forecasted no growth; another suggested limited growth and the headlines this week celebrate 19.5 per cent growth in the Bay in the next 10 years, which is very strange. This is the rate of growth we had in the boom times and we are certainly not there at the moment. Even worse, in the same article it was suggested that councils should be able to cover some of the increased ‘growth’ debt with intergenerational funding but gave a warning that places like Dunedin and Tauranga would not be wise to use this approach because of their already high debt position.

Getting plenty of action on Tauranga Harbour On 7 March, Bay of Plenty Regional Council, the University of Waikato and Priority One are hosting a one day public symposium to share information on the latest research on Tauranga Harbour and the range of work underway by various agencies and community groups to improve the harbour and its catchment.

There is a lot happening in this space and much of it is happening under the radar.

As part of a work programme

to address sedimentation of Tauranga Harbour, regional council staff have completed catchment action plans for all of the sub-catchments which flow into Tauranga Harbour. This process identified that many landowners lacked understanding and information about land management issues and how they can impact on the harbour.

As a result, the regional council

has launched the Futureproof Your Land campaign, targeting rural landowners in Tauranga Harbour catchments. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the need for landowners to sustainably manage their land and their responsibility to protect the waterways that flow through their properties.

About 700 informative packs

are being sent to high priority properties identified in the catchment action plans. These packs give information on a range of Future Proof toolkits available to help landowners address erosion, weather impacts, pollution proofing, soil health, pest management and protection of our natural habitat.

Tackling the smelly issue of sea lettuce in Tauranga beaches There are understandable concerns about what causes the brown, red and green seaweed which has been washing up on ocean beaches in some quantities.

The Regional Council has a role in the assessment of this seaweed. The recent ‘influx’ was assessed as a result of very strong sea swells and currents which dislodged these seaweeds from their rocky substrates offshore and bought them ashore.

Stranding of brown and red seaweed is not uncommon along Tauranga City beaches after big swells. The growth of

seaweeds on rocky substrates is, I am told, “totally natural” and is not in a ‘bloom state’ like we get with sea lettuce within the harbour in favourable conditions. Sea lettuce is the result of a nutrient rich sea environment and those nutrients come from many sources, including run off from land via streams, erosion and in the ocean itself. Nutrient run off into our harbour from land use is a key land management matter that the Regional Council is working hard with appropriate landowners on.

It has to be recognised that there are some causes, such as coastal erosion and the existing deep ocean nutrient load, that are difficult to curb.

Aid in risky situations New police alarms have proved their worth during summer, bringing urgent assistance to staff in a variety of circumstances.

In November and December, a total of 1500 officer safety alarms were distributed to seven districts that aren’t on the digital radio network.

Worn on the duty belt or body armour, the alarms have built-in GPS technology so when officers push the button, communications centre dispatchers can see their location and send immediate assistance.

The alarms have been activated more than 300 times since their introduction – mostly by officers wanting to test how they work – but they’ve also been successfully used in earnest.

“Officers tell us that vibrations given off by the alarm were very reassuring,” says superintendent Dave Trappitt. “We’re really pleased with the extra protection.”

Student shoots for the stars Having missed her shot a year ago at travelling across the ditch with the New Zealand girls’ basketball team following a freak injury playing rugby sevens, it was going to take more than a smashed head to keep Makayla Daysh off the boards last week.

Makayla’s national aspirations were put on ice a year ago when, captaining the Tauranga Girls’ sevens rugby team, she was caught awkwardly in a tackle, tearing the medial ligament on her left knee and ruling her out of the national under-18 basketball side heading to Perth.

Sevens remains on the radar this season but it’s the imprint she’s leaving under the hoop that is likely to determine her future sporting direction.

After several months in a brace Makayla suited up for the junior Tall Ferns last September, pushing the Australian team close in a three-test series in Porirua.

She’s turning out for the Rotorua senior women’s team gunning for the nationals and the Waikato under-19s (Tauranga don’t have a team) for their national tournament, where her sizeable presence at both ends of the court has been welcomed.

The Tauranga Girls’ College star was playing big forward for the New Zealand team at the Australia state under-20 championships in Launceston, Tasmania, when she was double-teamed on defence by a couple of tough West Australian With Kelly Exelby of Eves Realty Ltd bruisers and sent crashing to the floor.

It was payback, she suspects, for out-hustling one of their teammates at the offensive end.

“I’d blocked one of their girls a couple of times and her big teammates did a tag team on me down the other end. I whacked my head pretty hard on the floor but got straight up and tried to carry on but I think I got up too fast and felt pretty light-headed there for a while, although the 37 degree heat might have been a factor too.”

The 17-year-old was taken by team management to Launceston Hospital with suspected concussion but after waiting several hours to be seen by medics without joy, Makayla pronounced herself fit again to lace up her high-tops and get back on court.

Supporting success satisfies More than 20 years since setting up the Owens Charitable Trust, Joy Owens continues to get great satisfaction from helping many of the region’s talented school leavers.

“I get a lot out of it,” says Joy, who is now personally benefitting since changing doctors to a GP who had been a recipient at medical school.

Celebrating Joy’s 88th birthday at a quiet family gathering last week, daughter Robin Owens said it was great to continue the relationship when choosing a new GP when she shifted to Bethlehem last year.

“We used to have the kids over for afternoon tea and we would all have a chat and keep in touch,” recalls Joy, who was among the original trustees.

Tauranga’s former mayoress Joy Owens continues to thrive on supporting the community.

Now living in the Bethlehem retirement home named after her husband, the former Tauranga and Mount Maunganui mayoress shrugged off the name, saying she was used to the high profile after he was active in civic and business

affairs for many years.

“It’s a lovely place with lots of lovely people,” says Joy, who was recently a typical proud grandmother when her grandson Mahe Drysdale and Olympic rower Juliette Haigh showed off their medals to residents.

Sir Bob Owens set up the Owen Group transport company and was made a member of the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame in 1996. The trust was set up in 1990 by Joy and Bob, with scholarships initially only given to Tauranga Girls’ and Boys’ College students. It has since grown to include Mount Maunganui, Otumoetai, Te Puke, Bethlehem and Aquinas secondary schools.

The trust has given out more than $500,000 in scholarships – with 21 current recipients, including Olympian Peter Burling, getting $4000 a year for three years.

Laying out Welcome Bay’s welcome mat The welcome mat is being laid out for Welcome Bay families this Sunday, with a special community day at Light House church.

The event, which is open to anyone, will include a free hangi lunch, entertainment, music, face painting, a puppet show and op shop clothes giveaways.

Light House minister Rev. Mike Uttley is putting on the event to encourage people to get to know their neighbours and find out about support programmes and groups in the area. Agencies including Enliven, YMCA and Family Works will provide information on community support they offer.

Mike says Welcome Bay’s lack of facilities – such as a library, swimming pool or supermarket – contributed to a sense of isolation in the community.

“We feel like we are a bit of a poor cousin. But this is about coming together and having fun. It’s our ‘love our community’ day.”

Mike says the event builds on the success of a similar day last year which aimed to foster pride in the community and awareness of agencies working in the area to help. Last year’s event followed a spate of burglaries, and while Mike says crime had subsided, welfare groups in the area want to keep up the moment and promote their

The staff at Z Energy are shaving for a cure this month and have so far raised nearly $10,000 in support of people living with cancer.

On Friday, March 8 more than 10 Z Energy Hewletts Road staff will shave their heads in support of Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand – Shave for a Cure.

The team have called themselves the ‘Gillies Heroes’ and are taking donations from customers at any of the 12 Z Energy sites around the Bay of Plenty licensed under Dave and

Lynette Gillies.

The head shaves will take place at Z Energy Hewletts Road on Saturday March 8 from 10am.

A number of Tauranga residents will also lose their hair at the Mount Beach Bald event, in support of child cancer on March 2.

Among them will be Zespri CEO Lain Jager and his son. More than 10 students from Te Puna School who are also ‘Shaving their Lid for a Brave Kid’ at the annual event tomorrow.

More than 50 people shaved their heads to raise money for children living with cancer when the event debuted last year.

“It’d be so much better if we could focus on the library activities rather than worrying about the rent.”

New Zealand Toy Library Federation president Irene Mosley says toy libraries are important, as they encourage play without being expensive for parents.

The challenge comes as part of Toy Library Awareness week from March 3-10 – a week dedicated this year to showing the importance of play in building the pathways of the brain, developing social skills Teresa and understanding problem-solving.

“Years ago we thought there was probably a physiological effect from soaking in the word of God, but now science has proven this to be so.

“I am really looking forward to coming to New Zealand and talking to you about this new field of scientific exploration; and the importance of being known, as opposed to just knowing stuff.”

Magical day dedicated to children

More than 5000 children and family members are expected to descend on the Historic Village this Sunday for the annual Children’s Day festivities.

With a great line-up of entertainment and activities, council event organiser Nathalie Massa is expecting the day to be a huge hit for primary and pre-school age children.

Quality time

“Children’s Day is all about reminding parents and caregivers about the importance of having quality time with children – and with no charge on anything at the day except food, it makes it accessible for everyone.”

Children are encouraged to dress up as ‘magical animals’ to get into the spirit of day, with the best dressed creatures in line for prizes.

Nathalie suggests children just use clothes they have at home, or add a little paint or wings to create their magical creatures.

“They might want to make up a name for the creature and a little bit about it so they can tell us about

it if they win.”

The free event, which is put on by Tauranga City Council to encourage parents and caregivers to spend quality time with their children, is designed as a fun day for the whole family with activities from arts and crafts and pony rides to a treasure hunt, face painting and a bouncy castle.

There will be continuous entertainment on the stage, including puppet and magic shows, gymnastics and karate demonstrations, while boys will love the chance to get up close to some fire engines and big trucks.

Inspiring Tauranga women with a recipe for success A fundraising breakfast for International Women’s Day next Friday, March 8, promises to inspire guests with former MasterChef New Zealand competitor Jax Hamilton the event’s guest speaker.

With zucchinis and tomatoes set to offer an on-going harvest for the next two months, the Weekend Sun has come up with a great recipe to help keep your family coming back for seconds.

Tomato Zucchini skillet Ready in 20 minutes, serves 8-10.

Ingredients: 1/2 cup sliced green onion; 1 clove garlic, minced; 1 tsp vegetable oil; 1 tsp sugar; 1 bay leaf; 1 tsp salt; 1/8 tsp pepper; 1kg zucchini, unpeeled, sliced 1cm thick; 3 tomatoes, peeled and cut in eighths.

Directions: Cook onion and garlic in oil until onion is tender.

Add sugar, bay leaf, salt, pepper, and zucchini. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add tomatoes; heat through. Remove bay leaf before serving.

Dealing to your ballistic pumpkin patch Every year it’s the same story: I never intend to plant pumpkins, they just come up.

Pumpkin and Pistachio Preserve Ingredients 2.5kg pumpkin flesh, grated or chopped fine 4.5 litres cold water 4 tbs lime powder (source from Asian supermarket) 1700g sugar 3 litres water 3 cinnamon stick 3 star anise 6 cloves 2 vanilla pods split 300g sugar ¼ C lemon juice 1 C pistachio nuts, chopped

Method Soak the grated pumpkin flesh overnight in the 4.5 litres of water mixed with the lime powder. The next day, drain into a colander and then rinse very thoroughly under cold running water to remove all traces of the lime, drain thoroughly. In a large pan bring the sugar and water to the boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves.

A shady walk for support The annual March around the Mount is on this weekend, raising money for Bay of Plenty residents affected by melanoma.

Organised by Tauranga’s Melanoma Friends Group, the event on Sunday will see residents gather to walk around Mount Maunganui’s base track together decked in sun safe gear.

Each participant offers a gold coin donation, with last year’s inaugural walk raising $400 for the Melanoma Foundation of NZ. Organiser Ellen Orr says residents can bring along a gold coin donation and support the cause by having a fun afternoon.

Last year’s walk attracted 100 people and Ellen hopes for an even bigger turnout this Sunday.

“We’re hoping to get more people this year and we have lots of spot prizes, including two nights in Rotorua with adventure passes.

Ellen suffered from melanoma four years ago, and began the Tauranga’s Melanoma Friends Group when she discovered a lack of support in the area.

“We’re just a little group of people who have gone or are going through melanoma. Last year someone suggested we do a walk and we thought that was a good idea.”

She says it’s crucial people are aware of the cancer and get regular check-ups, especially as they age.

“A lot of people don’t realise how serious melanoma is. They think it’s something that gets chopped out and they walk away. And if you get it detected early that’s often what happens, but if it grows then you’re in trouble.

Did you know that two out of three New Zealanders will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of 70? Did you know that each year, New Zealanders are four times more likely to develop a skin cancer than any other form of cancer? Yet skin cancer is the most preventable of all cancers. These are the hard facts on skin cancer.

The month of March marks

the ‘March against Melanoma’ campaign, which aims to create awareness and promote the importance of early detection/ prevention against skin cancer and melanoma. This event also provides a supportive network for all those affected by either skin cancer or melanoma.

Melanoma is a serious skin cancer which is due to uncontrolled growth of the pigment cells called melanocytes. Whilst there are many risk factors for melanoma, if you have fair skin and live in New Zealand; you are at exceptionally high risk.

The first sign of a melanoma is usually an unusual appearing freckle or mole. Melanomas can arise in either a preexisting mole or it can be a new mole. If diagnosed at an early stage, excision of the melanoma is curative. Prevention is your best treatment as more than 90 per cent of melanomas are related to sun exposure – so “Slip, Slop, Slap”. Regular skin checks by a dermatologist can greatly assist in detecting melanoma at an early stage.

Raising lymphoedema awareness March is Lymphoedema Awareness Month.

Lymphoedema is often not detected or diagnosed in its early stages and therefore can go on to have a major effect on someone’s quality of life due to the permanent swelling and heaviness this condition can cause. Lymphoedema is the accumulation of excessive amounts of protein-rich fluid resulting in swelling of one or more regions of the body and often affects limb(s), although it may also involve the trunk, breast, head and neck or genital area.

Lymphoedema usually arises because the lymphatic vessels or nodes have been damaged, (secondary lymphoedema) or were not formed correctly (primary lymphoedema). Secondary lymphoedema is the most common and the damage may occur as a result of some cancer treatments, including the removal of lymph nodes, radiotherapy to lymph node groups or with the progression of malignant disease. Lymphoedema usually develops slowly and can appear months or years after cancer treatment.

What are the early stages of lymphoedema?

Early stages may include transient swelling of a limb or other region/s of the body.

Other symptoms may include aching, heaviness, stiffness, limitation of movement, tightness or temperature changes.

Things such as clothing, jewellery or shoes may feel tighter.

Some of these early signs may come and go but if you have any of the changes above that remain consistent, you should not ignore these but seek help.

The earlier the intervention, education and management plan is implemented, the less likely lymphoedema will go on to have a major effect on your quality of life.

Te Puke seminar for diabetes treatment change Diabetes patients in Te Puke are encouraged to attend a meeting providing information and training on new blood glucose meters this month.

On Wednesday, March 13, a 45-minute presentation at Te Puke Memorial Hall will help people change over to the new fully-funded meters and testing strips from the CareSens range.

Pharmac began funding the meters and test strips from the CareSens range in September last year for those people entitled to the subsidy. From today this range is fully funded in New Zealand, meaning a change in meter for most users.

Chief executive Steffan Crausaz says during the lengthy phase-in period, information and support is being provided to meter users and health professionals to help the transition.

“It is really important that people have their new meters and new test strips, and are confident about using them before their old test strips run out,” says Steffan.

Meet Your Meter seminars are running throughout the country, with the Te Puke session from 5.308pm.

“If people with diabetes can’t make one of our Meet the Meter events, there are lots of other places they can get information – over the phone, online, or from their doctor, practice nurse or pharmacist.”

This change will free up $10 million in funding each year for Pharmac to invest in other medicines for New Zealanders.

New dentist in town joins popular practice Dentist Joy Tahere is the newest addition to the team at Taylor Burley Kleiman Dental and already “feels at home” in the well-established villa on Willow Street.

After living in the South Island for the past eight years, which included two years working at the Invercargill hospital in the dental maxillofacial unit, Joy has returned to Tauranga with her family.

She is looking forward to catching up with old friends, making new connections and establishing her business in the community.

Joy joined TBK Dental as it’s a well-established family practice delivering dentistry for real people and says the practice aligns with her dental philosophy.

Medical Council doctor investigation continues The Medical Council is continuing its investigation into a doctor accused of having an affair with a man who was facing charges in relation to a stabbing in Katikati.

The Bay of Plenty doctor resigned from Bay of Plenty District Health Board last year over the allegations.

Katikati man Lee Aholima was found not guilty by reason of insanity in relation to the attack in 2012.

It’s alleged the assessment carried out by the accused doctor a month before Aholima allegedly stabbed Ramandeep Singh, is markedly different from that done by another medical colleague.

A doctor resigned from Bay of Plenty District Health Board amidst allegations she was having an affair with a patient.

Ramandeep, 21, was stabbed more than six times in the neck, lung, arm, shoulder and back during the incident on March 16.

There are reports the accused doctor left Bay of Plenty District Health Board in August and the Medical Council is investigation allegations of a sexual relationship between her and Lee. A Bay of Plenty District Health Board

spokesperson says it would be inappropriate for them to comment on the matter as it is before the Medical Council. A Medical Council spokesperson also says it is not able to comment on the matter until an investigation is complete. A decision on the outcome of the investigation is expected to be reached around the middle of March.

Support service calls for help to aid adolescents Despite Bay of Plenty Sexual Assault Support Service seeing about 150 victims in one year, Green Party MP Jan Logie was told Tauranga did not have a support service for sexual abuse victims.

The MP released a statement this week stating Tauranga was one of three cities in New

Zealand which did not have such a service, but BOPSASS nurse manager Robyn Christensen says Jan couldn’t be more wrong.

In one year the service has seen 150 victims and says the majority are children and adolescence, says Robyn.

“They just accept that that’s what happens. It’s a really nasty cycle.

“Sometimes there are several generations of abuse within the family. It’s very hard on victims

because often it’s very difficult to get a conviction.”

BOPSASS is a team of registered doctors, paediatricians, nurses, social workers and councillors and is the only service to offer support for sexual abuse victims and perpetrators who have been victims themselves.

The service has been operating in Tauranga for more than a year and works closely with Child, Youth and Family and the police.

Contracted by Bay of Plenty District Health Board to provide medical assistance, BOPSASS provides a 24-hour service for children, adolescents and adults recently affected by sexual assault or abuse.

Contracts are funded by the Ministry of Health, ACC and police. Robyn understands the need for a support service in Tauranga and says the more young people affected who receive a consultation, the better the future they will choose.

“One of our problems is getting registered ACC counsellors.”

The Weekend Sun, Jan withdrew her comment about there being no service in Tauranga and plans to tour the country to meet with support groups. BOPSASS is one of the groups Jan will visit.

Having worked in the sexual abuse sector, Jan understands the need for support services.

“I’ve seen what dealing with the abuse can mean. It can mean nightmares. It can mean complete lack of sleep. It can really destroy people’s trust in other people.

“It’s not something you can really get to the heart of without specialist trained support. It’s critical that we’ve got the right services for people in every part of the country.”

It was announced earlier this week Social Development Minister Paula Bennett has taken ministerial leadership of the sexual violence sector for New Zealand. Paula says it is a significant step in reflecting the importance of service providers that support people affected by sexual violence and the difficulties faced.

Home & Plant your bulbs now for great spring colour Even with the very dry ground, now is the time to get spring flower bulbs planted for the promise of a very colourful garden in the spring.

The size and quality of your bulbs will determine the success of your blooms. Choose only larger grade bulbs that will give you best results and also tend to be more disease resistant.

Bulbs can be planted from the end of January through to April, depending on the climate.

If you stagger the planting throughout this period, you will be rewarded with a continuous floral display right through spring and into November. Bulbs generally like a semi-shade to full sun position with well drained soil. Before planting your bulbs, prepare the soil by loosening it up and digging in some compost and

a little Tui Bulb Food. If planting in pots, choose a container that is at least 10-12cm deep with good drainage holes – waterlogged soil won’t produce stunning blooms.

Slugs and snails are the main pests to control, especially when the leaves are just emerging from the ground.

Use a sprinkle of Quash slug and snail bait to control this problem.

Some bulbs will produce better

blooms by chilling them in the fridge for four to six weeks, which will encourage them to flower.

Using a paper bag

for chilling is really important as it allows the bulbs to breathe properly; plastic bags can sweat and rot may develop.

Keep the bulbs to the side of the fridge, not at the back where they may ice up and get damaged.

A general rule for planting depth is to plant at the same depth as the bulb is tall. If planting in containers, smaller bulbs can be planted above the larger bulbs

and will give prolonged colour.

For most types plant the bulbs with the point to the top, although even if the bulbs are planted upside down, they will still come up and flower. Consider the following varieties for a great display – anemones, ranunculus, freesia, hyacinth, daffodils, Dutch iris or tulips, plus many more types of spring flower bulbs that are available now at Palmers, Bethlehem.

Tauranga sprinters racing ahead

Tauranga sprinters are looking well placed for wins at the Bay of Plenty Secondary School Athletics Championships held at the Wharepai Domain next Tuesday.

Sprint coach Todd Blyth’s students Molly Florence, Abby Goldie and Amy Robinson took first, second, and third in the 100 metres at the NZ secondary schools championships in Dunedin in December.

Abby won the women’s under-18 100 and 200 metres sprint double at last weekend’s Waikato Bay of Plenty Athletics Championships held at Hamilton.

She was ahead of team mates Amy and Brooke Somerfield in the 100 metres. Brooke was third in the 200 metres. Amy also had wins in the women’s under18 100 and 300 metre hurdles.

At the same meeting, Jonathon O’Donnell came second in the 100 and 200 metres sprints, and won the under-18 long jump.

Callum Taylor won the mens under-18 110 metre hurdles, and came second in the 400m.

The sprinters’ successes were highlighted at this week’s Strategy and Policy Committee by club member Malcolm Taylor, who with Ruth Tuiraviravi, are seeking more storage at Wharepai Domain for the athletics clubs using the all-weather track and facilities.

They coach girls and boys of all shapes, sizes, ages and ability levels, and their teams all train hard to compete at New Zealand’s largest cheerleading competitions.

The cheerleaders perform choreographed dances, cheers and stunt routines to compete at national and international events. The

Xtreme Cheerleaders are in teams that compete in all levels and do extremely well, placing and coming home with medals.

In June 2012, their senior Level 2 team competed in Australia at Aussie Gold Cheer and Dance Championships Competition for the Waikato.

The team was together for nine months, worked hard and came home with a gold medal.

“It was an amazing effort to represent their gym and New Zealand in an international competition.”

Classes offer more than simple obedience Dog trainer Tennile Guerra-ortiz doesn’t believe in sticking to the simple obedience tasks like sit, stay, fetch.

Instead, she aims to achieve a healthy relationship between owner and dog by training dogs for their owners’ individual lifestyles.

As she prepares to repeat her successful group training series, this time in Tauranga, Papamoa and Te Puke, Tennile is encouraging families to join in and get the most enjoyment from their pet.

Her training classes vary from others in that many aspects are completed off-leash, allowing owners to build confidence and dogs to have fun.

“It’s getting dog owners to have an understanding about the relationship with their dog.

“We cover the basics, but we do socialising, how to stop chewing, barking, digging – all what I call ‘house training’, but what a lot of people find annoying in their dog.

“A lot of people label them as ‘annoying habits’.

It’s that you haven’t really trained your dog right for your lifestyle.”

She says teaching these things makes owners and dogs more comfortable and relaxed.

“It’s like ‘okay, let’s be realistic’.

You want to take your dog off leash on the beach.

Instead of worrying about it, let’s show you how to do it.”

The training series is for dogs of all ages, and Tennile says it’s never too late to train a dog.

“If you do it when they’re a puppy, yes, it’s a lot easier; you’re just preventing unwanted behaviour.

But okay, you might have a few issues; you can still retrain your dog to do the things you want.

“Generally it’s easier and more fun than you think.

The problem with cats marking their territory Does yours or a neighbour’s cat spray on things around your property?

Cats will spray urine to mark their territory, which is different from urinating to eliminate waste from the body. They will back up to an object, hold their tail high and quivering, and tip-toe from side to side while spraying urine and leaving their scent for all who pass by.

Un-neutered male cats (or those that had their surgery after six months old) are the biggest offenders, however neutered pets that are stressed by something will also show this behaviour. For some cats, it’s because of changes in the household, like new furniture or carpet. For others it’s something that is going on next door, like the arrival of a new cat, that has your kitty upset.

If your cat has just started this behaviour, you notice blood in the urine, or they seem unwell in other ways, it is worth having a veterinary check to ensure there is not an underlying medical problem causing bladder irritation.

Anti-anxiety drugs may help, as can cleaning sprayed areas thoroughly, using a urine-odour neutralising spray, and covering the area with foil. Cats dislike anything involving foil, especially the sound of urine hitting it. Don’t yell at your cat if you catch them in the act, this will make them more insecure and more likely to mark.

Undercover canines keeping cool in the heat This summer is a cracker and it looks like the pooches of the region have been pretty creative in their methods of keeping cool.

Our friends at the Mount Vet and Mobile Vets have some good advice this week for surviving the swelter.

Avoiding heat stroke and sunburn is important.

Pale coated dogs and cats can suffer from sunburn, especially on areas where coat hair is thin – such as ear tips, noses and tummies.

Like humans this can develop into skin cancer. Use pet safe sunblock on these areas as much as possible and try to keep pets in the shade during the hottest times of the day.

Please try and keep your pets cool by avoiding excessive excitement and exercise in the heat of the day.

Bear in mind they are wearing a fur coat and remember they can only cool off by panting.

Make sure they have a shady spot to retreat to and plenty of fresh water available.

Just like a fairytale, nearly 40 animals from Tauranga SPCA are living out their own happy endings following The Weekend Sun’s adopt-a-thon last month.

Tauranga SPCA manager Margaret Rawiri says staff at the shelter are thrilled with the results of the first 2013 adopt-a-thon, which saw a stream of families come through the doors for a furry friend.

“We are really, really happy. We did lots of adoptions over the actual weekend: 20 kittens, four puppies and two adult cats. But between the time the paper came out and Wednesday last week we were still doing adoptions.

“Out of what was in the paper we have probably adopted 11 adult cats.”

Margaret says in 2012’s adopt-athon they had more people adopting throughout the dedicated weekend, but the weeks either side were slow.

“This year we had a steady adoption rate right through, which was really wonderful. It gave us an opportunity to get animals that were holding up cages and bring in some more that were out in foster.”

Tauranga SPCA also received $500 as a result of the adopt-a-thon, which Margaret says will go towards general care of the animals.

Despite the success, the cages are once again full, and the message to de-sex pets is still being pleaded.

“There are a lot of kittens; I think we still have about 80 in foster. We’re seeing a lot of newborn kittens around.”

Margaret thanks everyone involved in the adopt-a-thon and the families who welcomed a pet into their home.

Growth in Lions scholarships fostering young talent Otumoetai Lions has doubled the annual scholarships it normally gives out, thanks to a record number of high calibre applicants.

Lion’s club member and Taiwan Education Trust secretary Trevor Carr says the high standard of applicants made it a pretty onerous task to select

the winners, but donations from the trust’s founders enabled the club to offer six $1000 scholarships instead of the normal three awarded.

“We had a record number with 22 applicants and they were all quite deserving and bright students. We could have easily given out another four, if not more.”

Liao who, together with her friend Pih Shu Shih, both gave the club $20,000 to establish the Taiwan Education Trust to provide annual scholarships 14 years ago. The founders donated another $1000 each to the trust this year, which was matched by the club, to enable the trust to pay out six scholarships last week.

More shuffling of Who wants to be mayor of Tauranga?

Titanic deckchairs Moving ahead, let’s just look at some aspects of staffing issues at Council generally and more particularly with the problem with the Council CCOs, namely: CCO Staffing, 130 at Tauranga City Aquatics, 48 at Tauranga City Venues when they should be closer to one third of those numbers, i.e. 45 and 16 staff respectively. Currently both CEOs receive around $180,000 p.a. each for doing exactly what?

The same people who control Council administration control these CCOs. Temporary CEO Auton had responsibility for what has turned out to be a complete non-event on Council staff and systems audits, resulting in a paltry 5% reduction in Council staffing and with no CCO job losses envisaged.

All this effort and cost to achieve virtually zilch! Mr Auton’s brief was to do the job properly and efficiently and it is fair to ask what exactly did he manage to come up with as he looks to have failed miserably.

Who wants the 2013 Mayoral chains for Tauranga?

First off the rank the incumbent Mr Crosby with a zero success record, only a couple of underachieving cash-draining monumental white elephants, with more in the ‘pipeline’.

Profligacy has taken Tauranga from a 2004 capital debt level of around $80m to $460m in 2012 and likely to balloon out to $650m in 2016 representing a 390% debt/rates ratio.

Council wages total $37.5 million p.a. plus the usual add-ons (for operating whole TCC Empire) yet total CCOs wages for TCAL &TCVL total about $8 million p.a. ‘to run’ only a Speedway, Conference/Sports Centre, 3 main swimming pools and 2 gymnasium facilities.

There are no savings to be made here in merging these losers, the reverse in fact and it is again going to cost TCC Ratepayers dearly.

Premature mortality can be brought

about by drinking ten litres of water a day, so how about a warning label on the bottled water that is in the shops today, along with every other liquid ingestible.

Drinking large amounts of water of such a large amount as ten litres a day used to be and may still be the most common form of suicide in China.

On the other hand drinking a litre half an hour before breakfast is very good practice it will flush out and at times make one very fast on ones feet.

A Taupo dairy farmer accused of purposely pushing a cyclist off his bike in a road rage incident on Broadlands Road this week is on bail.

Joseph Arthur Frederick Roberts, 21, appeared in the Taupo District Court charged with injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was earlier charged with assault but the charge was upgraded.

Roberts appeared in court where he was remanded on bail without plea until March 13.

Alasdair Slade suffered a broken collarbone and fractured pelvis.

Your tale of the Mako reminded me of a (thankfully far less exciting) incident two summers ago.

I had ferried my family and my in laws family over to Matakana Island and had taken the kids donutting from the ski lane near the jetty, opposite the TYPBC. I was standing on the beach talking with my brother in law when he noticed ‘something large’ jump out of the water about 200 metres out in the channel near the 2W buoy.

There was a red Kestrel trailer yacht anchored fishing there and when I looked there was a seriously large disturbance about 30 metres in front of it. As I looked the animal jumped again, more of a kind of half breach than a full jump.

I could not tell what it was but saw 2 distinct colours, a greeny blue which changed along a line to creamy white.

A 14-year-old Rotorua boy who suffered multiple serious injuries in a fatal crash which killed his mother remains in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital.

Dianne Royce Rickerby, 33, died after her vehicle crashed on State Highway 2, near Te Puke, around 4.15pm on Sunday, February 17.

Dianne’s 14-year-old son was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a critical condition before being transferred to Waikato Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says no charges will be laid as Dianne was at fault.

Dianne was driving her Honda Integra from Papamoa when police say she crossed the centreline and collided head-on with another van travelling towards Papamoa.

Tame Iti released from prison

Maori activist Tame Iti is out of prison after being released this week.

The controversial Maori activist served a third of his two and a half year sentence for his involvement in the alleged military camps in Ruatoki.

Iti was released from Waikeria Prison around 5.30am on Wednesday after being granted parole on February 14.

Iti and co-offender Te Rangikaiwhiria Kemara were found guilty in a trial last year of firearms offences stemming from the 2007 police raids in the Te Ureweras.

Urs Signer and Emily Bailey were also sentenced to nine months’ home detention each after they were found guilty of unlawful possession of firearms.

In its decision to release Iti, the parole board stated Iti was an “exemplary” prisoner.

Shot man stable

A 20-year-old man shot in Matamata last week remains in the serious but stable condition in Waikato Hospital’s high dependency unit.

The man was shot twice in the head and abdomen around 11.15pm on Thursday, February 21.

Another man is dead following a shooting at a separate address in the Matamata township.

Detective Inspector Karl Thornton says emergency services were called to Mowbray Road in Waharoa shortly after 11pm.

At about 3.20am officers found another man dead at a Tower Road Matamata address.

“The 21-year-old had suffered a gunshot wound and police do not believe his death is suspicious.”

As education costs will be substantial, perhaps Mr Morgan would be prepared to spend some of his $millions on the solutions to eradicate wild and feral cats and fund SPCA to deal with the other viable options instead of wasting money and time on his failing soccer team especially as the footy fans seem to be now in same basket as cats.

I was really interested to read in last week’s Weekend Sun re the bridge being built over the Kaituna River at the end of Bell Road, Papamoa. When I was growing up I lived right down at the end of that road with my mother and father. We lived in the last house on that road.

My father always said to me that one day a road would go right to Te Puke. Even said a bridge would go over the Kaituna. I wonder what he would think now if he could see how right he was. I would have been 10 years old or younger, but I have never forgotten his words. He was a First World War man.

Tales of mako harbour antics I assumed it was a common dolphin as my wife and I had been fishing in the same spot a week earlier and seen a common dolphin leap high into the air behind our boat. My BIL shook his head and said he thought it was a shark.

Somewhat dubious I was watching the spot when it breached once more.

This time I saw a very heavy barrel like front half, a blunt triangle snout and a large triangle pectoral fin. I saw again the same 2 distinct colours.

It was most definitely a shark and with the heavy shape and 2 tone colours I am pretty certain it was a Great White. It wasn’t all that large, certainly not as big as yours but I estimate between 8 - 12 feet long. The people in the Kestrel never stirred from the cockpit.

No one was very keen on further watersports!.

Council’s incestuous relationship I concur with your editorial ire on the unseemly incestuous relationship between Tauranga City Council and the BOP Times. That paper is not ‘local’ it does not reach every household and it is controlled by a conglomerate who couldn’t care less about the people who live in this region.

Top Gear hoons set bad example Those three ‘actors’ in TV’s Top Gear do not set an example to all motorists and viewers as they sometimes destroy caravans, wrecks cars by dropping them from a great height from a crane; perform slide or drifting acts with powerful vehicles, causing large clouds of poisonous gases and generally wasting fuel in most episodes.

The episode on Prime TV 10 February was disgraceful, pitting three powerful cars around a race track against a propeller aircraft began spewing a dense cloud of white poisonous smoke – another faux pas (bad example).

The program should be setting an example by cutting back on CO2 emissions, not encouraging greenhouse gases! And those three guys always break the speed limits wherever they drive, setting more bad examples!

Those guys should test drive vehicles, up to the speed limit only. Anything above the limit is breaking the law!

Now how come, if the figures are correct that the TCC is in debt for $800 million there is not talk of a Govt bailout or intervention or threatened job losses for all (I wish). Is there anyone out there who can explain the difference between Solid Energy a producing company stocked with a hard working staff who are under such serious pressure for a mere $389 million, when a group of non producers in Tauranga have built up a debt of $800 million, all is fine and dandy, let’s go out and party while the spending is good.

Down with the pirates If anyone wonders at the rise in commodities, especially those shipped down to New Zealand, wonder no longer.

Every time a shipping company pays out to pirates no doubt they put it on the freight bill.

Piracy could have been stopped at the outset, if governments had ignored the rules of the sea, and instead of shipping captured pirates all the way to Holland, jailing them, all at great expense, piracy was a war, and on the first month they should have sunk and drowned them and it would have been all over in that month.

One pirate jailed, said he’d never been so well of in his life in a Dutch jail. No work and three meals a day.

Looking out the window at the brown expanse that once used to be the proud lawn of the Watusi Country Club I can’t say I’d be sorry if we had a few days of refreshing rain. As to the events... bring ‘em on! I’ll try and cover a few of the upcoming happenings this week and, as usual, can I offer apologies to those that I inadvertently forget.

And I will forget something because it’s an insanely busy time. Things on the list this week are as diverse as a film festival, an album launch, a touring show of women guitarists, and the Classic Hits Winery Tour.

So, yes, this is going to be another “What’s On” column, no wild flights of fancy, no baffling diversions into ephemera, just the facts guv.

First up, and it’s a quickie as the show is tonight (Friday, March 1), the aforementioned Winery Tour is down at the Wharapei Domain. And, just like last year, it should be a doozy. Gates open at 5.00pm; New Zealand’s Got Talent winner Clara Van Wel starts at 5.30pm; The Adults (Jon Toogood from Shihad, Julia Dean and others) start at 6.00pm; Anika Moa, Boh Runga and Hollie Smith are on at 7.10pm; and Fat Freddy’s Drop hit the stage at 8.30pm. I think we can all agree that it’s a very fine line-up of music. And you can bring your own picnic and bottled water. Sounds good to me. Girls with guitars Joanne Shaw Taylor, Samantha Fish and Daniel Schnebelen. started last night (28 February). It runs through till next Sunday (March 10) and includes no fewer than fifteen films as well as a collection of animated shorts. One could be all grumpy and point out that what’s on display is the somewhat lighter side of French cinema (despite making some of the best thrillers in the world, none are represented here) but there’s still a lot to enjoy, from a film about Renoir to the latest from legendary 90-year-old experimental maestro Alain Resnais, You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet. Check out the Rialto website or pick up a programme from the cinema for more details.

OK. On to the album launch.

It’s the B-Side Band who are on the launch pad and they’ll be sending their new offering into the world next Thursday (March 7) down on the Strand at the newly-renovated and extremely popular Phoenix Bar and Restaurant.

The B-Side Band have been together now since 2006, a trio comprising Paul Parkhouse on harps and sax, Simon Elton on guitar and Carl Winter on drums. Paul and Simon split the singing. The band play a mix of rockabilly, blues and country and have previously released an EP and two albums mostly focusing on their original songs rather than the obscure ‘50s and ‘60s “b-sides” that they took their name from.

The new release is a six-track CDEP,

the first since they added a fourth member to the line-up, not – as you might assume – a bass player, but guitarist Mike Kirk, often seen with Kokomo or the dozen other outfits he contributes to. The band will be playing at the Phoenix from 9.00pm, songs from the CD (which they’ll give away a couple of copies of ) and more. This is part of the Phoenix’s regular first-Thursday-of-eachmonth Blues Brews and BBQs evenings which have featured B-Side, Swamp Thing and others.

And, back to this weekend, if you want a shot of blues, the Brewers Bar is hosting the Girls With Guitars New Zealand Tour 2013. This certainly wins the “Truth in Advertising” award.

Samantha Fish and Joanne Shaw Taylor play guitars and Daniel Schnebelen plays bass. And they are really, really good. Fish’s debut album Runaway won the Best New Artist Debut Award at the 2012 Memphis Blues Awards. Schnebelen (also from Kansas) was nominated for the bass award.

The list of people she’s played with – from Koko Taylor to Kenny Wayne Shepherd is astonishing. Taylor is English, living in Texas. She recently played guitar for Annie Lennox at the Queen’s diamond jubilee concert. Pretty high cotton. Check them out on-line - this will be an incredible night. Saturday March 2. Fantastic Not bad at all Dreadful

ARGO Starring: Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston - Dir: Ben Affleck Argo has recently won the Best Film award at the Golden Globes, The SAGs, the BAFTAs, and the Oscars. So the big question is: is it any good?

The answer, thankfully, is yes! It’s not perfect and takes liberties with the actual historical truth (including one that impugns poor li’l New Zealand!) but if you’re after a smart, tense and funny thriller that sheds light on what really was a rather extraordinary true-life hostage rescue then look no further.

Argo tells the story of a small group of Americans who were hidden in Iran after Coming in the wake of impressive but largely overlooked The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford Andrew Dominic’s new film Killing Them Softly does all that it can to confound expectations. Life-changing experiences An information seminar for students interested in completing a 12-month Rotary International Youth Exchange in 2014 is at Classic Flyers on Sunday, March 10.

District outbound coordinator Jerry Cowper says the exchange programme suits many different people – and is always life-changing.

“Some of the students are really outgoing, and others are quiet. When the quiet ones come back, you can’t stop them talking.

“It’s a really growing experience. We often say you send away a child and a young adult returns.”

Hundreds of students, aged 16-18, have successfully completed the exchange, returning full of positive encounters and stories from their travels.

Jerry says anyone interested in living in another country, learning a new language and living in a different culture should attend the seminar and learn more about what’s involved.

“It’s purely an information-giving event – come and see what it’s all about.”

Countries involved include Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and USA.

Inaugural picnic in the park heads to Mount Coronation Park in Mount Maunganui will be filled with musicians from around the Bay of Plenty when the Rotary Club’s Picnic in the Park takes place for the first time on Saturday March 9.

Support group growing great men Tauranga men who have faced adversity and turned their lives around are featuring in a video aiming to cut suicide rates.

Less than four months since Mates Men Network set up a Tauranga support group to help men in crisis, organisation founder Kerry Babbage returned to Tauranga with cameraman Anand Rose to interview men with success stories.

Kerry says the video, which combines interviews with details of the organisation, will be used to promote

They are also putting together a series of 12 interviews with Kiwi men hoped to screen on TV. “We started in Tauranga last year and we’ve had guys who came through who were suicidal who are now shining in the community. It’s just wonderful,” says Kerry.

“We had these guys who came to the mates group and they might be in crisis. But it’s a temporary thing, once they reach out it doesn’t take long with the support they get…because they’ve been down and they just need that direction to get back up.”

Kerry says relationship breakdowns are the most common problem behind severe male upsets – an issue he says often follows from when men are not being true to themselves or others.

“The majority of people out there are hiding behind masks. A lot of the time the guys fall into trouble because they are being nice and trying to please everybody.”

Ten commandments hard to keep

The priority of true worship When Jesus was tempted and tested by the devil in the wilderness, one of the temptations placed before Him was the promise of the kingdoms of the world and their glory, if Jesus would bow down and worship the devil.

In reply, Jesus says “It is written ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve’.

If the Son of God Himself understood worship was a command to obey and a sacred duty for the believer, then we must understand true worship as a priority in our lives.

In John 4:23–24, Jesus says: “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Firstly, we need to see that the Father is seeking true worshipers. There is no record in Scripture of Him seeking after any other group of people, including pastors, teachers, evangelists, and miracle workers – just true worshipers.

Secondly, true worshipers must wor-

ship Him in spirit and in truth, which means that although we are instructed to worship, that worship must come from sincere hearts and be truthful in its desire and intention to glorify God. Thirdly, we need to see that this true worship is “in (the) spirit” – that is, it is not soulish and fleshly, touching our senses and our feelings because of a beat or a rhythm.

Fourthly, we need to see that the object of worship is God and the purpose of worship is to exalt and glorify Him in our adoration and thanksgiving. The object or purpose of worship is never what we get from worship but rather the offering we bring to God. The contrast to worship that is in spirit and in truth is seen in Matthew 15:8-9: “This people honours Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me; in vain do they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.”

Friends, God is looking for true believers who will worship Him with inflamed hearts and informed minds – with hearts that are alive to God and filled with love for Him and with minds that are filled with knowing Him for ourselves.

In response to Peter Whitcombe’s article on the Church page last Friday, I agree that the world would be a much better place if we could keep the ten commandments. But although most of us can keep a few of them, such as not killing or stealing, other commandments are humanly speaking impossible because of our flawed nature.

Especially the first commandment, to love God with all our heart mind and strength. Some of the others can be tough going too. E.g. Not to covet, and to honour our parents.

But Christianity has an answer to this problem: i.e. forgiveness of past sins through belief in Jesus Christ as the sin bearing Saviour, and by making him Lord of our lives.

When these two steps are followed, the accompanying change in our nature, through the indwelling Holy Spirit, enables us to live happy lives which are able, as never before, to love God and worship him Don Campbell, Gate Pa. and obey him.

In New Zealand there will be around 250 services organised by local interdominational groups – you are warmly invited.

‘No’ is time management key Saying no and making appointments with yourself are two of the keys to improving efficiency according to ‘time queen’ Robyn Pearce.

Robyn, who operates a time management and consultancy business, told a breakfast meeting in Tauranga last Friday that people should question if what they are being asked to do is their responsibility and if not, say no.

“Don’t say ‘no’ in a way which might limit your career prospects but delegate the task or suggest an alternative. If it is your responsibility then ask yourself ‘when is the best time to do the task?’”

People who say ‘yes’ to everything end up overloaded and letting down the people they have said yes to, she said.

“It is also vital to understand what is urgent and what is important, to avoid becoming bogged down in what appears urgent, at the expense of what is really important.”

Robyn also advised spending time at the end of one week planning for the next, writing down appointments and meeting with other people, and making appointments with yourself not only for work related tasks but also time for family, community and self.

“Learn to schedule sanity gaps, and how to leave undone those things which don’t really need to be done, so you can achieve balance and satisfaction in your life.”

Robyn said time management was actually about energy management, because managing time efficiently resulted in a better use

of an individual’s energy and created less stress.

When it came to the time of the day during which an individual was most efficient, it was important to recognise whether they were ‘a fowl or an owl’.

Fowls are morning people who function best early in the day while owls are at their best late in the day and into the night.

Distractions, said Robyn, were time-stealers.

“It’s estimated that it takes 10 to 20 times the length of the distraction to get back on task again, if you ever do.”

Distractions took many forms, from conversations with fellow staff members to phone calls to emails.

it. “Being in real estate taught me I had to learn better time management skills – or sink. To start with I was kicked out of meetings because I was late.

Plus I burnt out numerous times from overwork and poor time habits.

“Frustrated with complaints about my lack of time management skills, a wise friend pointed me in the direction of a decent diary and a few key time management principles.

“Since then, through much study, trial and error, my once great weakness has transmuted into a major strength and an international business.

I reckon I’ve had the best possible background for running a time management business because I really do understand how it feels to be out of control.”
