Horse sense will be the ruination of good television Mr Ed was a talking horse on television in the sixties.

A lot of my age group grew up with programmes like Mr Ed. Some of you apparently still believe that horses can talk. It doesn’t help when we see Ms Bradford interviewed on the news, which perpetuates the myth.

Along with other classics such as Get Smart, Lost in Space and Petticoat Junction, these programmes were pivotal to our early education of what America was really like. It turns out that, bizarre as those programmes and their characters were, the USA in real life is actually worse.

All that aside, I was intrigued to see that in the same news bulletin announcing that inane Shiteland Street had been running for 20 years, another news clip forecast the pending doom of TVNZ7.

Quite ironic that the one TV station offering some intelligent and alternative viewing to the usual tripe pumped out of TVNZ (such as the aforementioned soap) should be on its deathbed, while so many other pieces of complete nonsense are funded by the taxpayer.

It’s a sad indictment of the average IQ of New Zealanders that when a sloppy load of PC-overdosed, poorly acted by tired old goats, OTT tripe such as Shiteland Street could have survived so long. Worse, we are effectively paying for it.

Meanwhile, clever and worthwhile programmes such as some of those on TVNZ7 are facing the axe along with the channel.

I watch a fair bit of Maori TV, enjoying the variety of programming and much of it well produced, thanks to the funding, but also the fresh take and the Kiwi-ness it offers. Along the way the viewer can also pick up bits of the native language, and that’s a good thing for Te Reo, one of the aims of the channel.

But imagine my gobsmacked reaction when I flicked onto Maori TV on Monday night, to find….Mr Ed!

This was no ordinary re-run of an old blackand-white comedy – but a dubbed over in Maori version… with English subtitles.

That’s right. Maori TV have taken an ancient American sitcom, dubbed over the entire soundtrack with Maori, then translated it back into English with the words running along the bottom. There were also some very witty ‘Kiwi-isms’ worked into the script, for local flavour.

Entertaining and quirky as it is, I really struggle with the value here.

Not knocking the very fine Maori TV channel, (which is totally necessary) but it’s interesting to compare the numbers.

Maori TV spends about three times what TVNZ7 did for about the same number of viewers.

I cannot see how a translated version of Mr Ed, with English subtitles, is good value for money, while we’re likely to lose 7, the platform for local content. Back Benches, Media 7, news every hour, excellent documentaries and a handful of other intelligent programmes that attracted an average monthly cumulative audience of 1.1 million last year. In December, it achieved a record 1.47 million viewers.

Okay, so it also runs the awful Shitland Street, but that’s a recap and not typical of the 7 quality. Unfortunately that soap will survive when 7 falls.

Both these great channels are necessary and viewer numbers is not the sole aim of either.

Broadcasting Minister Jonathon Coleman, making less sense than Mr Ed, screwed up the figures earlier in the week saying TVNZ7 only had 200,000 viewers. He was quickly reigned in on that one.

I reckon the talking horse is making more sense than the government on this one.

Maybe Mr Ed should be the Broadcasting Minister. After all, he makes plenty of logical decisions, effectively governs from his stall and is obviously bi-lingual.

Death by dancing

A new sequel to the movie Dirty Dancing is likely, after four women and two men have been sentenced to death in northern Pakistan for singing and dancing at a wedding.

Here at RR we’ve also seen some pretty shocking dancing at weddings that should be punished.

Clerics issued a decree after a phone video showed six enjoying themselves in a remote village in the mountainous district of Kohistan, 176km north of the capital Islamabad. RR researchers say it’s not far from Hesdancingbad.

RR sources say this sequel, Deadly Dancing, may again feature Patrick Swayze, since he’s already dead so is ideal for the lead role, the character of Sheik Yabouti.

The soundtrack is likely to feature disco classics such as “Stayin’ Alive” (not working that well for the Beegees) “You Should (Not) Be Dancing” and the Gloria Gaynor hits, “I Will Survive” and “Never Can Say Goodbye.” James Brown will chime in with “Doing it to Death.”

Donna Summer’s “Last Dance” will play over the credits.

Meanwhile the women involved are rumoured to be auditioning for the Paki version of the classic romantic black comedy, “A Wedding and Four Funerals.”

Here in the West some of us have been trying unsuccessfully for years to have disco dancing declared an offence punishable by death, but with mixed success, although many old disco fanatics these days move like Death Warmed Up. If Mr Minto had a shred of consistency he’d be suggesting we stop playing cricket with Pakistan till they stop executing wedding guests and people who have fun.

It is a strange world out there.

Mobile library stays Tauranga’s mobile library service will continue for another year, but its future remains uncertain.

Councillors deliberating on the Ten Year Plan submissions this week decided to put off a final decision until after the overall review of all the city libraries, which is expected to be completed later next year.

The decision was criticised as a ‘kicking for touch’, but obtained support partly because it provides an answer to aspects of the mobile library service proposal councillors believe the public misunderstood.

They say axing the mobile library is not a cost-cutting measure. The cost of the service would be reallocated within the city libraries’ budget.

The library services review may find that more mobile libraries will be required, says Larry Baldock.

Councillors also have to take note of the kind of overwhelming support shown for the library service in the submissions process, says Larry. Of 180 submissions, 176 are in favour of retaining it.

David Stewart believes the mobile service is no longer required. The mobile library service was established before the Papamoa library was built to service the city’s eastern population. Resthomes now had vans and could take their own people to the library, says David. It may be more effective to provide vans to take people in to the libraries instead of taking books to people.

“We can’t be all things to all people all of the time. We have to

pick who we have working for and what service we are providing for them.” says David.

“Can this money be better spent in the library? Things are changing with electronic books. Is there more we can do there?”

The mobile library costs an estimated $104,000 each year and represents 2.8 per cent of Tauranga City Libraries total business. The mobile library bus was new in 1999 and has a residual value of $58,000 and a remaining working life of 30 years. It needs repainting, the cost of which councillors expressed a hope may be sponsored by someone paying for an advertisement on the back.

The decision is part of the Ten Year Plan deliberations process, which councillors were undertaking this week.

Wild things are coming to Tauranga

The gnashing, rolling and showing of terrible teeth, eyes and claws will be out in force inside Tauranga’s Harisons Art Gallery in June.

The gallery is hosting a ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ tribute exhibition in memory of its creator - acclaimed author and illustrator of children’s books, Maurice Sendak, who passed away last month aged 83.

Gallery art director Gaye Carrothers says Maurice was hailed as the Picasso of children’s books.

“He had the foresight so long ago to pull back on the text in children’s books and allow his art to carry his story. He fully realised that his art had the power to pull a reader into the picture book experience.”

Maurice gained international acclaim as an author and illustrator upon the release of his timeless classic, which straddles the line between nightmares and dreams; reality and fantasy.

The exhibition, like the book, will take people on a journey into the artistic worlds of fantasy and reality, says Gaye.

“Some of the works in the exhibition are beautiful and

dreamy while others, like many aspects of Sendak’s book, are a bit wild and scary.”

The exhibition comprises a group display including artists such as Nick Eggleston, Anthony Warnes, Talitha Brauchli, Mandy Hague, Rebecca Gilmore, Richard Ponder, Ken Hunt, Richard MacDonald, Jannette Blackburn, Elliot Mason and Alexandra Holms.

The showcase is sponsored by Nautilus Restaurant in Tauranga and Wild South Wines by Sacred Hills, and will run from today until June 21.

Youth unemployment yo-yos in city

Young people have fallen as a share of the Western Bay’s unemployed over the past two years, while those aged older than 25 are making up a higher proportion.

But the figures fluctuate.

Youth unemployment in Tauranga peaked as a percentage in March, 2010 at 37.9 per cent, when the total number of unemployed in the city peaked at 879.

This year, youth unemployment makes up 31.7 per cent of a total 836 people unemployed – a far larger share than the 29.4 per cent of the 684 people unemployed at March 2011.

From July 30 a new youth service will be offered across the Bay of Plenty, which Mike says will build on the strong regional focus on helping young people into employment, training or further education through a series of programmes designed to boost young people’s chances of getting a job.

The new youth service will aim to support 16-17 year-olds, who are “disengaged” from education, training and employment.

When it comes to breaking into the job market Phil Hurn is an advocate of the old-fashioned approach of door-knocking and working for free.

Phil, who is an employment consultant for Workbridge Tauranga, knows from experience how effective the approach can be. It helped get his two previous jobs – where

Rena oil spill ‘preventable’ The oil spills that coated Bay of Plenty beaches in heavy fuel oil after the Rena struck Astrolabe Reef could have been prevented, it was claimed in court.

At the sentencing of the captain, Mauro Balomaga, his counsel Paul Mabey QC said the captain and the ship’s engineer had identified the source of the oil leak, but their advice was ignored by the salvors who took over the ship.

The ship struck the reef early on October 5. Soon

afterwards the captain and chief engineer identified the source of oil in one of the Rena’s forward holds as coming from the No. 3 starboard tank via the duct keel.

They were working on transferring the oil from the No. 3 tank into the No. 5 starboard tank when the salvors took over the ship.

“For six days they were on the boat and they wouldn’t listen to the captain and engineers who said ‘The oil’s coming out of there, we have identified it. If the weather turns bad, we are going to have problems,” says Paul outside the court.

“The salvors said ‘Na, na, you don’t know what you are talking about, the boat is listing to port’.

“And of course when the weather did hit and the tank broke, it was the No. 3 starboard side tank that let all the oil out. It’s the very tank they identified as the one where all the oil polluted from. The captain was right about that.

“They could have saved nearly all of the pollution, and that’s exactly what it was. The Rena oil spill could have been prevented if Maritime NZ and the salvors had listened to advice from the captain and Rena’s chief engineer.

There might have been 20 tonnes instead of 350 tonnes.”

The Rena’s oil washed ashore along about 60km of coastline from Bowentown Heads to Maketu. Cleaning up the spill involved more than 8000 volunteers who spent more than 19,000 hours cleaning oil from Bay of Plenty beaches.

The continuing salvage of the wreck and cleaning up the cargo and containers that have also washed ashore is costing the owner’s insurers $US 10 million a month.

Budding astronomers are encouraged to make the most of next Wednesday’s Transit of Venus as it will be the last this lifetime.

Tauranga Astronomical Society president Toby Tobias says it will be the last chance to witness Venus pass in front of the sun for 105 years and he is hoping to avoid a repeat of Captain James Cook’s experience watching the transit from the Pacific.

“He came out to Tahiti in 1769

While the weather is beyond his control, society members are hoping to make it easier for the public to experience the transit by displaying it on large TV screens at the Fergusson Park observatory.

“It is extremely dangerous to try and view the transit without protection form the eyes – it will cause instant blindness if you are looking at the sun directly with a telescope or binoculars.”

He says welding goggles offer good eye protection for watching the transit directly or another safe way is to project the image of the sun through a telescope, binoculars, pinhole or reflected pinholes onto a screen.

Toby says the observatory will be open for the full period of the transit, from 10.15am-4.45pm, and encourages anyone interested to watch it via the observatory’s 14 inch Meade telescope.

Children’s entry is free, adult entry costs $2.

Black swan threaten environment and aviation safety Last week’s swan hunt on Tauranga Harbour upset some animal conservationists, but Fish & Game officials says local black swan numbers are out of control and a danger to the community.

An estimated 200 birds were killed in the hunt on Sunday, May 27 – significantly less than the 1000 killed in previous hunts.

Eastern Region manager Rob Pitkethley says swan numbers – which have risen to more than

5000 on the harbour – could threaten seagrass meadows to an extent that they may not fully recover.

He says Tauranga Airport has at times raised concerns regarding the number of swan near the runway.

Tauranga Airport manager Ray Dumble says any wild life in the immediate vicinity of take-off and landing is a concern at an airport.

“Whatever can be done to keep the numbers at a minimum suits us,” says Ray. “We haven’t had an issue with them yet and with the culling happening we seem to think that keeps it under control.”

The 21-year-old stepped up to be a Steamer last year, in what was a milestone season for the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union – their 100th year since inception.

If that wasn’t enough pressure for the young Number 8, the name of every past player was printed on the fabric of their jerseys to commemorate the centenary; including Carl’s father, Steve Axtens.

And this season, the weight of representing the region will only increase as Carl and his teammates carry the future of Bay of Plenty

rugby with them on to the field.

In a New Zealand first, the team will have the names of young rugby fans printed on their jerseys for the 2012 ITM Cup season.

The innovative idea came around as part of the BayProud Kids’ Club; giving 5-12 year olds the opportunity to indelibly mark themselves on the history of Bay of Plenty rugby.

Bay of Plenty Rugby Union CEO Mike Rogers says the exercise will serve to strengthen the connection between the team and the community that supports them.

“They must have taken my messages to heart,” says Graeme, referring to is recent refusal to back down over forecast budget deficits for the gallery.

The decision, as part of the Ten Year Plan deliberations, removes the deficit posted for the gallery’s 2013/14 and 2014/15 years, says Graeme.

The council ceased inflation adjusting the gallery’s grant in July 2010, holding it at $847,400.

All the other city council CCOs continue to have their operating grants inflation adjusted. In spite of the handicap, the art gallery has returned small cash surpluses in recent years against a background of steadily escalating costs.

The city council decision to reinstate the inflation adjustment on the gallery grant is a key element in the gallery

being able to continue to attract exhibitions of the quality of the two opening this weekend, says gallery director Penny Jackson.

Exhibitions like Brian Brake: Lens on the World, would not be seen in Tauranga unless the gallery was able to tick off Te Papa’s requirements regarding lighting, environment control and security, says Penny.

It also means the gallery can continue to run the education programme, which in the last school year meant 10,000 Tauranga area school pupils visited the Tauranga Art Gallery on organised visits.

“Tens of thousands of school children have been through the gallery, and so many of them are coming back...We know this because we overhear them talking to nana or dad saying, ‘this is what the lady was saying’...”

Don’t count your chickens!

There was a stunning example of counting your chickens before they hatch at Full Council as elected members deliberated on submissions to the annual/three year/10 year plan.

The Finance Controller told of a hopedfor rate surplus from this financial year of $2 - $3 million. Some of this he said was from interest rates, presumably both the invested funds and council loans.

Whether this set them off or not is hard to say but some elected members just wanted to give, give, give your money to every well deserving cause that asked. I’m

not being off hand here – they were in the most well-deserving causes but – and it’s a big but – not ratepayers’ business in many instances.

I had reminded my colleagues at the outset that many ratepayers were up against it financially and also that just because people hadn’t submitted then their interests needed to be considered also.

On Monday, Terry Molloy and Larry Baldock were vociferous in their support for almost everything going – except for the Greerton Library. That’s what politics and the way resolutions are presented does and who gets in first to move which option. For instance of course Terry, Larry and Tony Christiansen support the Greerton Library – just not the option the rest of us voted for. So they felt compelled to vote against – the 200 m2 addition option if the Chief Executives proposal for a Private/Public Partnership for a new library on the site is unsuccessful. There is a raft of decisions being made so I’ll cover what I can but it’s by no means a comprehensive list.

The University Tertiary Campus proposal was accepted 7-4 with Rick Curach, Catherine Stewart, Bill Grainger and Murray Guy opposing. $100,000 for promised resource consent funding for a museum passed – I didn’t get to the vote here but Cliff Road is a “preferred site” – not a done deal.

The Waterfront upgrade at the Strand reduced from $20m to around $4.9m and will have small kiosks dotted around. The proposed playground at around $300,000 passed 8-3 with me, Rick and Catherine opposing. This playground could have been delayed while we saw how the project developed.

Personally I question this is a place for a playground but I’m happy to be proved wrong. At $300,000 I hope I am!

Catherine moved $6000 for signage at the Te Ranga Battle site but this was lost 10-1. Terry and Larry then tried for $5000 for battle site maintenance but this failed too. Most of us felt we should have discussion first on a partnership with iwi.

The Mobile Library will remain for another year pending the Library

level of service review due next year.

This proposal was NOT a costcutting exercise but a suggestion that the money could be better spent in the Library. The librarians turned up to deliberations all set to give yet another presentation/submission apparently unaware that this was totally inappropriate. Mayor Stuart Crosby quickly set them right.

On a vote of 6-5 the Art Gallery had its CPI inflation adjustment reinstated from 2013/14. Terry and Wayne Moultrie moved this one.

Terry said that if Tauranga was to attract intelligent people and the right type of people then the huge imbalance between Arts and Sport (funding) needed to be reached.

Tony Christiansen, Larry Baldock, David Stewart, Mayor Stuart Crosby supported also.

Hydroslide

TCAL which operates the Aquatic Network received support for transfer of funding to pay for a new “exciting” hydro-slide in place of a water play feature and a moveable floor pending presentation of yet another business plan. I strongly opposed this. TCAL is costing the ratepayer heaps this year. They were doing okay, in my view, until they dropped the ball over the Mount Hot Pools refurbishment. This cost plenty and the ratepayers will pay their $1.2m deficit along with $1.185m cost of the now defunct Hot Pool redevelopment project – canned by Council. Baypark and TCVL get their $5 million capital injection over three years.

Maori housing

A bid by Terry to provide $15,000 towards a salary for a Maori Housing project failed 6-5 with Terry noting with disgust that it was just a “pittance”. Interestingly this salaried position was Government funded which Government had now ceased. Larry gave us a lecture on what he said was our obligation to help Maori because “they had given up so much for us to live in this beautiful country” and our obligations, as he sees it, consequent to the land confiscations! Another bid for $20,000 for papakainga housing studies (housing on Maori land) also failed 6-5 with Larry, Terry, Bill Grainger and Mayor Stuart Crosby also in favour.

A 73 minute debate over what to do with future road resurfacing. NZTA subsidy for city roads and streets is 43%. This has been guaranteed for another three years and is worth around $35m. There is a backlog of programmed maintenance for 85km of work and one option was to redo every street with fine chip seal on the straight parts of streets. Intersection and cul de sac heads would still be hot mix where needed. Staff assured us your roading dollar is not wasted and a lot of work was done to repair UV damage and water damage that may not be apparent to a layman.

Matapihi footbridge will be refurbished at an estimated cost $770,000 paid out of depreciation account – not this year’s rates!

A consultant’s report ($44,000) showed that it’s not so good but single file pedestrian use only will be alright until its fixed. A move by Mayor Stuart Crosby to close it in the interim failed 7-4. The majority were concerned that a closure would see people once again walking along the railway line – the reason the footbridge was built in 1959.

Completely nuts

There were at least 14 deaths on the rail bridge until the footbridge was opened and we don’t want to repeat that.

There is a risk with what was decided but there are warning signs up and people have to take some responsibility for themselves. But no, as The Weekend Sun goes to press the CEO has ‘taken advice’ from health and safety officers and he has had safety security officers installed on the foot bridge, 24 hours a day, apparently at 10 metre intervals to ensure you all walk in single file ‘for your health and safety’ at your ratepayer expense! This is OSH gone completely nuts.

We’re midway through deliberations as I write this and I’ll update the rest next week.

Veteran meets Cretan Despite the gloom inside the celebrations at the Mount Maunganui RSA for the 71st anniversary of the Battle of Crete, the old man’s eyes saw something they recognised, and twinkled.

“You’re one of them,’’ he said to Terry Koumakis, who had been born in Tauranga to Cretan parents.

With another moment to think, the man, who moved from Christchurch to Rotorua due to the earthquakes which still rock the Garden City, rephrased his greeting and shot out his hand: “No, you’re one of us.’’

The Weekend Sun caught up with 96-year-old Battle of Crete veteran Roy Tucker at Mount Maunganui RSA

on May 20, but due to complicating factors were unable to get much of his story at that time.

The following was written with the help of Dot Forbes and concludes with a poem written by Roy after moving to Rotorua from Christchurch’s Sumner.

Roy was born on June 21, 1915, as the Gallipoli campaign raged.

His father was a royal marine who relocated to New Zealand for his health after being invalidated out of the navy due to sea-sickness.

Roy would later train as an artillery signaller in the army and rise to the rank of sergeant as one the country’s top exponents of Morse code, the radio and telegraph.

He was posted to 20th battalion, served as the headquarters radio

operator for Lieutenant Colonel Kippenburger and in Greece, the Middle East and Crete, teaching men in tanks, including Keith Elliot VC, Morse code while hiding from the nightmare of low-swooping German planes.

Adaption offers manic chaos and hilarity

Mark Brown and running from June 6-23, is night Phileas Fogg will be played by Alan Baker, Passepaan adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic novel. rtout by Frazer Smith and Detective Fix and other It follows the story of Phileas Fogg of London and his newly employed French valet Passepartout as they attempt to circumnavigate the world in 80 days on a £20,000 wager set by his friend at the Reform Club.

Director Ben Hambling describes the play, with its plethora of characters and settings, as consisting of “manic chaos, a small headache for the director, a huge amount of hilarity, a variety of accents”.

“What you end up with is a fast-paced piece of theatre with a lot of laughs and a great deal of entertainment,” Ben says.

“The script itself is a relatively new adaptation, so audiences won’t have seen it before in Tauranga. And also, there’s an elephant!”

The play is Ben’s fifth production, and his fourth for the 16th Avenue Theatre, with the most recent being the well-received ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’.

The cast have been rehearsing since mid-April and Ben says they have taken to their multiple characters like ducks to water.

“The show is very dialogue heavy and the cast have had an enormous amount of lines to learn, however

characters by Liam Hagan. Barry Brett will be Sir Francis and Alexandra Mostyn will play Aouda.

The 16th Avenue Theatre seats 150, and tickets are available from Baycourt Ticket Direct.

Security guards man Matapihi bridge

Security guards are stationed on Matapihi footbridge today acting as safety advisors while Tauranga City Council tries to keep the bridge open despite a report deeming it unsafe.

Earlier this week councillors voted to keep the footbridge despite a engineer report declaring the bridge unsafe. The decision to keep it open was made on the basis that closing it would see people taking the even more dangerous path of using the railway track.

Missing students return to camp

The group of 10 girls who went missing in the lower Kaimais last night have returned with their fellow classmates to the Ngamuwahine Lodge campsite today.

The Tauranga Intermediate students aged 11 and 12-years-old went missing in the bush while undertaking a fauna exercise as part of a school camp on Tuesday. A search and rescue effort was mounted when the group failed to return around lunchtime.

Tauranga’s talent to be judged

Hundreds turned out for the Tauranga auditions of New Zealand’s Got Talent at Baycourt Community and Arts Centre today. Line producer Loretta Jacobs says the impressive turn-out began to build at about 2pm.

“We’ll be looking at 300 plus I think.

“I think the word is now that it’s not just a singing competition - it’s a talent show. So novelty act, comedians, variety acts, jugglers and things like that - we are getting those acts as well. The bulk is singing and dancing.”

The New Zealand’s Got Talent team have been scouring the country for talented Kiwis since April and will finish in Auckland on June 9.

Time to take Rio seriously

Out of the twilight zone When I first analysed Western Bay District Plans I was most impressed with their strong adherence to sound management principles and the consideration given for the needs of the stakeholders.

Encouraged by their words, I searched further but was dismayed to find that the stakeholders were missing in action. People were angry, dissatisfied, despairing and many were leaving town. Businesses were dying, crops were failing and people were being chased off their land. I soon realised I had stumbled into the twilight zone of council politics. The ratepayers should be the obvious stakeholders in any council organisation but all seemed struck down and powerless. They have been accused in council documents of being apathetic and disinterested. Any vampirologist will confirm that he or she who wields a stake made of oak, ash or hawthorn, has absolute power. What has gone wrong?

Easier access to Forest Park Right on our doorstep in the Western Bay is the 37,000 hectare Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park - a living museum of natural and human history.

The park marks the northern limit of kamahi, red and silver beech, and the southern limit of big kauri. It has quite a few historic mining and kauri logging sites within its boundaries and has a number of popular tramping tracks. The park can be accessed at various points along SH2 (between Tauranga and Katikati) or SH 29, 20km from Tauranga.

This week, the upgrade of one of the closest entrances to the forest park for Tauranga residents was unveiled.

Community spirit the silver lining With the sentencing of the Master and Second Officer of the Rena last week we are again reminded of the significant impact this event has had on our community and our environment. It’s been a devastating ordeal for everyone during these past seven months, but I’m confident there has been a silver lining. I have been amazed by the way our community banded together and got stuck in to clear oil off our beaches.

There was, and still is, a brilliant community spirit shown. The people of Tauranga and particularly iwi were prepared to get together and do what needed to be done to get our beaches clean again.

Fishing good, but spotty

Regular fishers, although complaining, have still found fish at good spots old or new, but very little outside them.

Our regular kontiki fisher on Friday at Papamoa, out a fair distance, got his snapper limit. But at the weekend going far he got just two, while a neighbouring kontiki in close brought in seven good size snapper.

Russell Anderson (Bugger): with four others had a good day’s fishing at a good spot between Matakana and Karewa late last week. They landed 31 snapper, four kahawai, and two gurnard.

Russ Hawkins (Fat Boy): last week at the Mayor Knolls landed seven gemfish. At the weekend fishing the Penguins, they went home early with 39 snapper.

Garth Le Lievre (Deepstar): last week northwest of Motiti found plenty of tarakihi and a fair sprinkling of snapper, John Dory, and kingfish. At the weekend the same area was not so good, but they got sufficient.

United Travel at Bethlehem

Brett Keller (Manutere): last week at Mayor they got some snapper and tarakihi, but no hapuku.

Around Karewa there was some good snapper. Saturday outside Motiti they got good snapper, tarakihi, and red snapper. Sunday in the same area the conditions were painful, but the fishing was still not too bad.

Washing the dog a walk in the park There are three words every dog knows: walk, bone and bath.

Unfortunately, they’re not usually too happy to hear that last one.

Washing the dog is just one of those things you can’t avoid – even though none of the parties involved really enjoy the process.

Happy digger’s daydream I met my match this week.

I thought I was the champion digger of holes in the lawn. That was till I met Chris the plumber, who came to fix the leaky pipe in the backyard.

This guy would make a family of gophers redundant. Just as well we had a professional digger this week, since I’d injured myself yet again, and been patched up by the kind folk at Mount Mobile Vets. In recovery mode, I watched in awe as Chris

burrowed his way deeper than a Labrador on a mission.

The helpful guys from Steve’s Plumbing & Gas have been battling with dodgy pipes in the yard, and this week Chris sorted the problem once and for all – but he had to move enough dirt to bury about 50 bones. I was on hand, just in case my predecessors had left any.

Alas, we only found clay and the odd remnant of previous pipe fixing attempts. Never mind, it was inspiring to see a

quality tradesman at work, especially down at my level. I showed my appreciation by giving his ears a lick.

The guys from TecSystems came the same day, but a bit harder to keep up with – they headed up the ladder, out of dog slobber range, to sort out the TV aerials; which wasn’t nearly as exciting for a bored pooch. But Graeme and the team did a brilliant job of fixing our signal. Now the boss and I can watch Dogs with Jobs and Animal Planet in glorious HD – which the boss says stands for “Happy Dog” – and maybe 3D if I can get those silly glasses to stay on my head.

Later in the day I had real work to do – test driving the dog wash at Palmer’s carpark.

That was very necessary after my backyard antics with Chris the Plumber and all that clay.

At first I thought we were visiting Dr Who in the Tardis, till I realised it was actually a giant canine jacuzzi. Check out the story above, on this cool service.

Ugandan children performing free concerts in the Bay next week.

Each of the Watoto Children’s Choir’s 24 children, aged between 7-14, are either orphans, have been abandoned or made vulnerable.

The Ugandan group will perform four free concerts next week in Tauranga, Katikati and Te Puke.

TEAR Fund, an International Aid and Development agency, is hosting the choir and organising the venues for the concerts.

The choir has won global acclaim from royalty, presidents and ministers for its contemporary gospel and traditional African rhythms. They have been travelling internationally since 1994 as representatives of the millions of children in Africa orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS, war and poverty.

The Watoto Ministry is based out of Kampala, Uganda and currently cares for more than 2500 orphaned and

vulnerable children across three villages within the country.

The choir tour, entitled ‘Beautiful Africa: A New Generation’, began in the US in September 2011 and has travelled through Canada, UK and Australia with its final stop being the North Island of New Zealand. This tour features vibrant African music, dance routines and the life changing stories of the Watoto children. “[The children] carry with them the stories of Africa’s rescued orphans and their incredible message of transformation. We encourage all New Zealanders to come to the free concert and hear their story,” says TEAR Fund event organiser, Megan Claxton.

A new market in Tauranga aims to give families a bargain-filled fun day out.

Starting June 10 and to be held on selected Sundays, The Kids Market in Tauranga is a one-stop shopping experience aimed at expectant or existing families with children up to 10 years old living in the Bay of Plenty.

The new market is held at Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre, next to Memorial Park, which has a host of other attractions – including mini golf, $1 miniature train rides and a skate ramp - guaranteed to appeal to families following a browse around the stalls.

The free, indoor market features 50 stallholders specialising in baby and kids’ products and services, all with many great promotional offers. There is also an $800 hamper up for grabs for customers who sign up to The Kids Market/stallholder database. Informative seminars will run at each market.

Organisers Caroline and Anna say the new market aims to meet the demand of families wanting to save money on buying quality new baby and kids gear, along with maternity essentials. The Bay of Plenty has an increasing number of younger families and just under 4000 babies were born in the region in 2011 alone.

It also aims to give local businesses a way to sell directly to customers and, as Anna says, to build their brand’s products and services by having an avenue to get in front of their target markets and showcase what they have to offer. Future ballet star awarded scholarship A young Bay of Plenty ballerina is headed for the city where stars are born.

Fourteen-year-old Alice Beedie has been offered a full scholarship to attend the Los Angeles Ballet Academy after impressing judges at the Waitakere Performing Arts Festival, and will be enrolled in their month-long summer intensive training programme during July.

The programme covers various forms of ballet and dance, with guest

tutors from the Bolshoi Ballet Russia, Joffrey Ballet Chicago and Royal Ballet Company of London.

The impressive achievement comes as no surprise to Alice’s teacher, Dance Education Centre director Debbie Gooch.

Alice Beedie is a dedicated dancer with her sights on a career in ballet.

“Alice is a wonderful student; very dedicated and disciplined. The opportunity is there for her now, and this scholarship will just help to open doors for her future in dance.”

Dancing since the age of four, Alice has always been focused on her goal of being part of a professional ballet dance company.

“I always wanted to dance, and I was inspired by Delia Matthews and Katherine Grange, seeing them dance here, and they’ve both gone on to dance with ballet companies.”

In addition to ballet, Alice also does tap, jazz and contemporary dance, with practice every day after school and competitions on the weekends. During the programme in LA, she will be training from 9am-4pm five days a week with other young dancers from around the world.

“I’m really excited for the trip – I’ve never been overseas for dance before, and this is a great opportunity.”

Alice is now looking to raise funds for her flights and expenses during the trip.

Old boys invited to converge on Blake Park Through the years, men such as Hika Reid, Brad Fleming, Colin Bourke and Mike Delany and thousands more have raced up and down the touchlines of Blake Park.

The Mount Maunganui Rugby Club hopes many of them will return to pace the other side of those white lines on June 9, when the resurgence of old boys day will see the Mount Maunganui field awash with green and gold.

is encouraging anyone who has ever been associated with the club to turn up on the day.

The day will begin with registration from 11.30am-12pm, followed by a light sit-down lunch until the day’s first games kick-off at 1pm.

The main clash – the premier battle of the bridge contest between Mount Maunganui and Tauranga Sports - will begin at 2.45pm.

The club, formed in 1923, played at Coronation Park until a move

to Blake Park in 1959. It has produced eight All Blacks: Peter Johns, Ian Utley, Bruce Smith, Frank Shelford, Jason Goldsmith, Scott Robertson, Kevin Senio and Mike Delany, and can boast to a number of notable players and coaches, such as Gordon Tietjens.

The day is being held as a precursor to the club’s 90th anniversary celebrations, to be held next year.

Community gardens grow The first beds have been laid and vegetables planted in the new Merivale Community Garden, but coordinator Deb McCarthy says it is just the beginning.

“We’ve got a lot more planned – this is just the start, and now that we’ve made some progress I’m expecting a lot more people will get involved.”

Deb says top priorities are putting up a professional sign in the next week, then painting perimeter fences at the garden on a bare section at the corner of Fraser St and Alverstoke Rd. “It takes my breath away the generosity of people. All businesses I’ve asked to help have said yes. It just restores your faith in humankind.”

Roses ready for holiday weekend We’ve had a busy week receiving roses ready for the Queen’s Birthday weekend.

Shortest day

This is the traditional time for the new season rose bushes, freshly lifted from the growers’ fields.

The sooner they are planted, the better the roots get going before next season’s display or beautiful blooms.

As they have just been lifted from the fields, they do not have many fibrous roots.

The roots are just trimmed to fit into a pot then filled with potting mix. If the plant stays in the pot for awhile it will make new root over winter, but if they are planted

Strawberries are also great planted in containers or hanging baskets as this helps to keep the fruit clean and easy to pick.

Winter is here - strawberry planting time Garden centres in most areas now have new seasons strawberry plants available for gardeners.

You may find a range of types , one of which is the Pajaro. The NZ Berry Growers website describes them as short day, consistently very large, with bright red skin and light red flesh.

They are also exceptionally firm, have excellent flavour when picked fully ripe, but

can be insipid when picked under-ripe. Early crops if not deflowered. Average yields, but exceptional quality results in high export grade out.

It is interesting to note that about 80% of the commercial strawberries grown are Pajaro. Pajaro is only one variety that I have planted along with Baby Pink, Temptation, Sundae and Supreme.

These are fairly new types and its good value to have a few plants of each type.

I also have the original alpine (white strawberries) which I find are delicious when fully ripe even though the berries are a bit small. The alpine produce just about all year long and the Pajaro crops about November, with pickings through to about March if the weather is not too hot and another flush in late summer early autumn.

The Alpine strawberries are likely to be found in with herb displays. You only need one or two plants to start with as they self seed easily and pop up all over. A nice ornamental plant also for under trees and

Extra layer of insulation More than 1400 Western Bay of Plenty homes are expected to benefit from a boost in funding for the Government’s insulation programme announced in the Budget.

Funding to insulate an extra 41,000 homes announced by Energy and Resources Minister Phil Heatley comes on top of 150,000 homes already upgraded and a previous pledge for another 39,000 homes.

The extra homes will be paid for from savings made from the programme, which is administered by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).

Phil says by helping provide warmer and drier homes it offers real health benefits, particularly for those with respiratory illnesses.

“Insulated homes are easier and cheaper to heat to healthy temperatures. Warmer homes mean fewer visits to the doctor, and greater productivity with less need to take time off work or school.”

The estimated 1475 homes in the Tauranga and Western Bay council areas expected to be insulated from the new funding is based on uptake rates to date.

In less than three years 5400 Western Bay of Plenty homes have been insulated as part of the Government’s ‘Warm Up New Zealand: Heat Smart’ scheme. A total of 4250 houses have been insulated under the scheme in the Tauranga council area and 1150 in the Western Bay district, out of a total of 150,000 homes insulated nationwide.

The programme’s grants, which cover a third of the cost of installing insulation up to $1300, are only available to homes built before 2000. For more information, visit www.energywise.govt.nz

It is for this reason the charity runs an annual Pyjama Drive, in which it aims to collect 1000 pairs of pyjamas from branches in Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington and Christchurch to give to foster children and adolescents.

Katrina says she finds it hard to imagine the plight of so many poor young New Zealanders.

“I can’t imagine spending a winter’s night without the benefit of a warm pair of pyjamas to snuggle in

2010 in Auckland to provide children going into foster care with basics such as clothing, underwear, nappies, toothpaste and shampoo.

Foster Hope chairperson Louise Allnut says many foster children arrive with no belongings due to the speed with which they leave their homes, with those with belongings often bringing them in rubbish sacks.

“We set up Foster Hope because we want these children to know that someone cares. No child should be made to feel like their belongings are rubbish and caregivers should be able to focus on the emotional needs of a child, rather than having to run around doing last minute shopping.”

CEO Hilary Price says offering children a warm, comfortable environment is an important element of the foster care programme, which is committed to keeping siblings together.

Just as important is its ability to initiate healing when our body is damaged by disease or trauma.

Your immune system has two main divisions. The first is your built-in defences, which include physical barriers such as skin and mucous membranes, the creation of fevers to make invading bugs uncomfortable and attack cells to kill invaders. These defences include the inflammatory processes to start healing from trauma and disease. The second part is our

adaptive defences and includes a variety of cells such as B and T cells that learn to recognise and attack specific threats such as individual viruses.

Like all body systems our immune responses are largely influenced by nutrition. Immune cells need B vitamins as co-enzymes, they need the trace minerals as enzyme co-factors and they need the antioxidant nutrients. Vitamin C is found in high levels in immune (white

blood) cells and these require greater amounts when actively fighting an infection. You should aim for 500-1000mg of vitamin C when well and increase this to 1000mg twice daily if unwell.

The trace mineral zinc is essential for our both killer T cell and natural killer cell production. Zinc is involved with more enzymes than any other mineral and helps with immune (antibody) response and may even help to limit bacterial and viral growth. Your daily multi should have 15mg of chelated zinc plus all the other trace minerals.

Vitamin D is one of the most important immune system nutrients because it helps to make the immune system more responsive and additionally helps protect against autoimmune disease and cancer cell formation. Unfortunately our national levels of vitamin D are very low contributing greatly to many disease processes. I take 1000IU daily from spring through autumn and an additional 1000IU during winter.

If you are using supplements to help your immunity, make sure that you cover all the vitamin, mineral and antioxidant groups before you add specific nutrients. While there are some notable exceptions, such as vitamins C and D, for most people their daily multi-nutritional complex should provide all the minerals (major, trace and ultra-trace), all the vitamins and all the main antioxidant groups.

New float for para-equestrian More than one year after Tauranga para-equestrian Jodie Thorne began competing in para-dressage events she has been gifted a customised, brand new horse float.

The $14,500 float was given to Jodie by Eleos Home Trust, a Bay of Plenty charity helping people with disabilities, and JC Trailers.

Jodie, who was diagnosed with FSH Muscular Dystrophy at 12 years old – a degenerative muscle condition which affects her strength and balance – says Eleos and JC Trailers have provided her with tremendous support.

Along with her horse Tech, Jodie competes in para-equestrian events around the country – a feat made much easier with the addition of a float.

Jodie says when she heard about

“I don’t think I could speak, which isn’t usual for me.”

“He needs to be exposed to as many different situations as possible.”

Jenny Utting from Eleos says she feels so blessed to be helping Jodie achieve her dreams.

Founded in 2004, Eleos Trust has so far given away $1.4m to people like Jodie.

“We’re just in the business of giving away money – which is very nice,” says Jenny.

Jodie’s ultimate goal is to get to the Paralympics in 2016.

“I think we can do it; it’s just a case of working really hard.”

Grabbing life for Papamoa 50s Plus It’s not normal for an older woman to be smiling from ear to ear while sliding down a slide made for children.

But a Papamoa-based group is trying to change all that. Papamoa Support Centre’s 50s Plus Group, established in 1998, consciously subverts stereotypes around aging and encourages and helps its members in a variety of ways. Recent trips have included a visit to the Classic Flyers Aviation Museum and a surprise outing to see John Trinder – who has a collection of more than 54,000 pens.

Senior support worker Rose Fairweather, who runs the group, says those involved also receive support through home visits, phone calls and from people advocating on their behalf with organisations as diverse as IRD and WINZ. It is difficult to promote the centre as it operates as a charity and, as such, is prevented from placing signage on Papamoa Beach Road to outline the free services, Rose Lee Pahi enjoying the says.

Tauranga resident Suzy King couldn’t believe how sick she became when she caught influenza and is encouraging others to get the influenza vaccine.

“I had difficulty breathing, was coughing all the time and I was so tired I couldn’t stay awake for more than an hour at a time,” says Suzy. “My daughter asked me to lunch one weekend and she said ‘Surely you can sit in a cafe?’ I replied I had difficulty just staying awake - it was so debilitating.

“I’d definitely recommend getting the vaccination.

Becoming so sick is awful.”

Before getting the flu Suzy hadn’t

had a sick day from work for five years.

“I would walk the dog every morning, go to the beach every weekend and walk around five kilometres. I had to give all that up for ages.”

Suzy had two weeks off work with the flu and says it was more than two months before she started to feel normal again.

“All I did between doctor’s visits was sleep. Even when I was back at work I left an hour or so early and went straight home to bed.”

Suzy has already had the influenza vaccination this year.

Shakers’ support group A support group is being set up to help Western Bay of Plenty sufferers of essential tremor condition.

The condition – which mostly affects the hands and head, causing a rhythmic shaking – affects about two per cent of people and is often misdiagnosed as Parkinson’s Disease, despite being more prevalent.

New Zealand Essential Tremor Support Group national coordinator Susan Yoffe says the condition makes everyday tasks tedious, if not extremely difficult, with sufferers’ tremors prompted by action, while Parkinson sufferers experience tremors at rest.

“Sometimes known as benign tremor because it is not life threatening, it is certainly lifestyle altering. Eating, writing, even using the telephone become difficult tasks with the constant shaking.”

Otumoetai sufferer Shirley Jones is setting up a Tauranga support group for sufferers and their partners to share experiences, hints and tips.

The first step to find out is to talk to your doctor who may organise some tests.

What is it? Gluten intolerance is a permanent intestinal intolerance to dietary gluten, which causes damage to the cells of the small bowel.

How does it affect your health?

If undiagnosed the condition can cause long term poor health and other less common effects such as osteoporosis due to reduced calcium absorption, infertility, miscarriages, depression, dental enamel defects and increased risk of gastrointestinal cancers.

What are the causes?

How can I have a gluten-free diet?

All foods containing ingredients with gluten must be avoided if you are gluten intolerant. This diet rules out all ordinary breads, pastas, and many convenience foods.

Several grains and starch sources are acceptable for a gluten-free diet including maize, potatoes, rice, and tapioca (from cassava).

Diagnoses

Lauren says part of the problem in diagnosing the condition is that, aside from a tummy ache, everyone has different symptoms such as wind, heartburn, bloating, fatigue, dermatitis and neurological problems.

“If you have any of the above symptoms then you need to get a blood test through your GP, however you need to listen to your body and if the symptoms continue try a gluten-free diet.”

She stresses while many think coeliac disease is “ho-hum” it can be very serious and have life-threatening complications if untreated, including

leading to other autoimmune diseases such as diabetes or osteoporosis.

She says the disease is also linked with MS and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Feast on Chinese downtown If you are after an excellent Chinese meal, head to 88 Devonport Road.

As well as their large takeaway selection, they have now opened an adjoining sit down restaurant. You can dine in very comfortable

surroundings and feast on a wide selection of dishes at 88. We chose to try the dim sum menu, perfect for lunch. These are delightful, mouth-watering Chinese snacks served in steaming bamboo baskets and eaten with lots of delicious Chinese tea. We sampled several dishes off the menu including the steamed pork buns, shrimp dumplings, prawn dumplings, and many more. I have to say I love this form of eating, where you get to try lots of different dishes.

The sizzling squid in black bean sauce was meltingly tender and delicious. I am keen to try some of the dishes cooked in claypots – not too sure about the stewed trotter with peanut, but hey keen to give anything a try. Other dishes that caught my eye were the deep fried squid tentacle, and the pan fried lotus root cake. The roast duck dish served to the table next to us certainly looked excellent and got the nod of approval.

There are many vegetarian options, plus all your favourites.

All the dishes were excellent, just the right saltiness and spices. The food and the service were excellent, and offered real value for money. We felt very comfortable and welcome. We will definitely be back for lunch and dinners.

Warming soup for winter Lentil Soup

Serves six

Ingredients 1 cup of dry brown lentils or 2 x canned lentils 1 celery stick, diced 1/2 onion, diced 1 tablespoon dry chicken stock 3 garlic gloves, crushed 1 carrot, diced 2 tablespoons of parsley, finely chopped 6 cups of water 1 large potato, peeled and diced 1 teaspoon salt and pepper 2 fresh tomatoes diced (or 1 cup of canned tomatoes) 1 cup cooked pasta – set aside (risoni or rice) Grated Parmesan to serve Method When using dry lentils you need to soak them either overnight or in the morning before you head out the door. Allow for approximately 8 hours soaking. You will notice that they will increase in size. To soak, cover your one cup of lentils with water. Before you use for this dish drain and set aside. If using canned lentils drain the brine, set aside.

In a crock pot or large pot add all the ingredients. Stir and simmer on low for 30-45 minutes until reduced and lentils have become soft. Before serving add one cup of cooked pasta. If using a crock pot, allow this to cook on low all day. Before serving add pasta or rice.

Serve with grated Parmesan cheese.

Preparation time: 15 minutes. Cooking time: 30-45 minutes. Cost: $15

Besotted by bacon

The list the doctor gave me of foods to avoid because of my elevated cholesterol reads like a menu, and near the top of it is bacon.

The smell of bacon cooking at the Tauranga Farmers Market wafted in my direction enticing my tastebuds. As Brian from Pirongia bacon, one of the new marketeers, cooks up samples of his traditionally cured bacon, the many recipes using bacon race through my mind.

Bacon almost goes with anything, and remembering that fat is the vehicle of flavour, and flavour is what it’s all about, I’ll admit to many bland dishes

being rescued with the addition of bacon.

Some quick research brought up dishes like bacon flavoured popcorn, chocolate covered bacon,

chicken fried bacon, even bacon infused vodka.

Wendys have a Baconator, with six strips of bacon (!) and the Norwegians have hot dogs wrapped in bacon called ‘polse’ and sell them everywhere, like we have pies here. There is evidence of six ingredient types of umami which elicits an addictive neurochemical response. So it’s no wonder bacon breaks with our best intentions to stay healthy, so like most things, moderation is the key.

And the key to good bacon naturally begins with happy free range pigs, a dry curing process and a natural wood smoke process.

Pirongia bacon has these attributes and certainly tastes like old fashioned butcher-made bacon to me.

Bacon Wrapped Chicken and Halloumi Bites Serves four

Ingredients

6 boneless skinless chicken thighs 12 strips of streaky bacon 150g halloumi 1 clove garlic 1teaspoon smoked paprika 1teaspoon dried oregano 1 tablespoon chopped parsley salt and freshly ground black pepper ¼ cup lemon juice 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil

Method

Make a marinade for the chicken thighs by chopping the garlic into thin slices and mixing with the lemon juice, oil, paprika, oregano, parsley, salt and pepper.

Cut each thigh in half and score with deep cuts.

Marinate in a plastic bag or a covered bowl for at least four hours.

Slice the halloumi into battens about 1cm thick.

Place in the centre of inside chicken thigh and roll up, then wrap with half a strip of bacon around each thigh and squeeze tightly with your hand.

Place on baking tray and bake in oven for around

20 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius.

Serve hot as a starter with some salad or micro greens or allow to cool and have as a cold snack.

Even the kids love them as a lunch box treat.

Trauma insurance: why it is so valuable?

Over the many years I have been in this industry I have come to realise why trauma insurance is so valuable and should be in everyone’s insurance portfolio.

It is sometimes viewed as a kind of lottery product – if you get a disease on the list your covered, if it isn’t on the list, you aren’t.

Insurance is about predicting financial outcomes, no matter what the crisis.

Trauma insurance creates choices and that is where it is so valuable. Because trauma insurance provides a cash payment based on diagnosis, it makes no stipulation as to how

the proceeds should be spent.

For example, in the case of a cancer for instance, a controversial treatment that may normally not be funded through medical insurance or the public health system because it is outside the realms of mainstream medical opinion can be funded using the trauma cover proceeds. It allows the freedom to pursue every treatment approach, even one that may not recommended by your GP or specialist. The provision of money also means you could approach a health care provider because of their reputation, location or simply because you prefer them.

The other major advantage of trauma insurance is the

piece of mind it offers. This has never been more apparent and brought so close to home as when my wife was recently diagnosed with a malignant cancer. Apart from the major turmoil this news brings and the chaos it throws into family life, it has allowed me the luxury of spending some time away from work to be with my wife as she is having treatment, without the financial stress and worry that would normally occur.

The cost of recovery from an illness like cancer or a heart attack can have a huge impact on finances.

Add to that damp conditions for rugby and soccer and it can begin to start to look like things are stacking up against you. Just to finish it all off, after two minutes you can hear maybe up to five different voices telling you to do five different things.

I tell you right now, it is not a way to promote excellence in skill execution.

If this does not work for you, put yourself in your work life and imagine yourself having five different bosses with five different thoughts as to what you should do. If that does not confuse you, nothing will.

The reality is often there is a lot of conjecture around refereeing which causes parent angst.

The problem these days is the ref is a volunteer often not equipped to do the job but just a parent that was the last person asked and so could not say no.

So if the person in charge is not qualified to make decisions, how do you expect the game to flow the right way?

The same could be said of the leaders of various countries – if they are not equipped to the job well, what chance do the rest of us have? The people will revolt taking things into their own hands.

Let’s hope there are some leaders in Europe and across the world that will stand up quickly.

A duty to die?

John Wightman’s push for euthanasia lacks much in the way of rational argument. Firstly it is not the Church as such that condemns this practice, rather it is Christian teachings.

His attacks against people in the Church for all manner of unrelated issues both real and imagined are irrelevant to the matters of euthanasia. Secondly, to claim that the Dutch experience of euthanasia is OK because a couple of mates who visit Holland now and again reckon so, is hardly grounds for an endorsement.

Mr Wightman seems unaware of the Remmelink report - a survey of Dutch doctors that was undertaken with the assurance of immunity from prosecution as a means to enable a candid and accurate assessment of compliance with the Dutch law on euthanasia. It showed that during the period of the report, 400 people were killed through doctors providing them with the means to kill themselves (permitted under law). 2300 were killed by doctors acting on the patients explicit request (also permitted). 1040 patients were killed by doctors without the patients knowledge or consent (not permitted) and 4941 patients were killed by lethal Morphine overdose without the patients explicit consent (also not permitted).

Of the 8681 people killed, only 1440 died by their own hand or with their knowledge and consent. This should be of serious concern.

What the report also does not and cannot measure is how many of the 1440 ‘legally killed’ requested death only because they had become despondent and depressed at feeling they were a physical and/or financial burden upon their families.

It is common knowledge in the aged care industry that a substantial number of people in their care would be encouraged by their descendants to die and many would feel a duty to do so if euthanasia were made legal.

I go to the Pools several times a week, my observation is patron numbers are low and that is also the report I have from other regular users. Too many council cars With the revelation that the Tauranga City Councils fleet of vehicles comprises of 51 cars and that 47 of these are taken home by staff daily that seems to indicate that vehicles are basically a part of the job description and this should not be the case.

However the Mayor has recently decided, for some reason or another, that he will forego his ratepayer provided vehicle and the stated saving are said to be $14k pa, accordingly working on this figure, if the Council was to forego 35 vehicles the potential savings could be $490k pa being 35 times $14,000.

I have always wondered as to why the Council requires such a large number of vehicles in its fleet as surely 20 should suffice with all being in a pool system and ordered by staff as required.

The statement that by taking them home saves overnight parking costs is in my view just a red herring as I understand that the majority of the vehicles are parked during the day in the garage areas of the Kingsview Towers and I also wonder at what cost?

The majority of current Councillors seem to be oblivious of the increasing costs that ratepayers face and seem so reluctant to make any hard decisions.

Cutting services is a disaster waiting to happen.

Government Meat Inspectors are being dispensed with and responsibility entrusted to the freezing works and meat packing plants to do their own meat inspection.

The boning-out staff would not know what to look for in their innocence and pass contaminated products.

As a retired meat inspector responsible for passing sheep meat free of caseous-lymphadenitis and lymph nodes and hydatids. Cattle and pigs with TB. For export it was essential to know and understand what to look for.

In the long history of Government meat inspections in New Zealand there has never been a complaint.

That ensured a high standard protecting the farm and valuable markets.

Bio-security has been severely pruned back. An example, the Kiwifruit industry brought to its knees with PSA. The Queensland fruit-fly now costing millions to eradicate. The Varroa Bee Mite causing heavy losses in that industry.

The danger of Foot and Mouth has been further exposed by reducing staff at Bio-Security. If this got into New Zealand immeasurable damage would occur.

The fore-going examples of cost cutting would eventually be detrimental to New Zealand.

Can’t our ‘boofheaded’ bureaucrats and politicians idiots look beyond their baubles of office and prestige of power?

Appoint our own head of state In celebrating the Queen’s Birthday this weekend, it may surprise some to discover that in the Commonwealth of Nations, only 16 of the 52 members recognise Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State. Most of the Commonwealth members are self determining in some form.

Nevertheless most would wish to recognise sixty years of faithful service to Britain and the Commonwealth. given by the Queen, not to mention the respect won by a fine human being.

But the question won’t go away....when will New Zealand /Aotearoa, in all our cultural richness and diversity, embrace full democracy and self determination? When will we appoint one of our own as Head of State ?

I feel its time to write about the so called Hot Pools, we should rename them Tepid Pools, as to call them hot is a joke, when you tell them the water isn’t hot they blame the wind or the rain, I have been going to the pools for over two years, when I first came the water was hot, so are we to believe that two years ago we didn’t have any wind or rain, come on, surely we can get hot water to come out of the pipes.

The Gravy Train? Maori not the first to inhabit NZ Where’s my ticket?

In reply to Mary Brooks: Serial Maori basher is at it again, its very sad when people have to resort to lies and false statements.

When people say “it’s a fact” there are no pure maori in NZ. My father and his five siblings are, they trace their whakapapa back before colonisation on both sides, their birth certificates state “Maori of Pure Blood”, and further proved to myself when I registered with the local Iwi, we have to confirm our Whakapapa, all recorded. It’s true Full blood Maori are very rare but not extinct.

Let’s face it when a maori says “Cher your fulas holdens tu meke”, you see him as a Maori and not part European. Payouts to Iwi are about 1B and not 35B, and this is usually less than 10% of what is claimed, compared to SCF and Hubbard investors who will be paid out about 1.5B, without us blinking.

The AA credit rating was fraudulently obtained and guaranteed by the old boys club, so therefore it should be void. Iwi settlements were obtained through legal process, every New Zealander’s right.

I am sure I am not the only person totally disenchanted with the Treaty of Waitangi.

Not only do we appear to have several treaties, all open to differing interpretations, but a grievance industry has grown from it that threatens to destroy New Zealand.

While other countries plan for the future, we are still locked in the past, and our once great country slides further and further into chaos.

Cannot we become one race of different cultural beliefs, the Kiwis. After all, we all came here in different ships, but are in the same boat now, let’s start steering it in a forward direction before we sink!

Conflicting responses I am completely disenchanted with repair/demolition responses to the Canterbury/Christchurch earthquakes.

Seems to be an almost daily litany of uninformed decisions, reversals, thoughtlessness etc. Recently, the debacles surrounding the Cathedral; a reversal of the assessment of an elderly couple’s home scheduled for destruction; and (17 May) a report of an assessment of the swimming pool complex which was considered in need of demolition, but a rebuild appearing possible, according to other assessments. And at a lesser cost.

Seems to me there is too much conflict of supposed expertise and decision making.

Maori were not the first people to inhabit New Zealand. There is evidence that has been suppressed, that there were people here as far back as the Greeks and Celts.

Has Mr. Dey made liars of his ancestors who told of their history orally, and described peoples with red hair and freckles here in NZ, has he forgotten that there were the peace loving Moriori here when they arrived, which the warlike Maori proceeded to kill and eat, and that their oral history speaks of “other people” when they first arrived here, supposedly by canoes?

Maybe he hasn’t studied his background too carefully. How many Maori can honestly say they are pure blooded without their bloodline being diluted by intermarriage with Europeans, or any other culture? Bloodline is important if we wish to prove the purity of our race.

So the hand outs we are so generously giving to the Maori should be worked out on the amount of Maori blood in each one. Impossible isn’t it?

So how come we are being pillaged by a section of New Zealanders of which a portion or even half their bloodline have no alleged “Grievance claims”. Which bloodline are they following? The one that gives the most benefits?

The important question is, how many of the Maori people have benefitted in a positive way and do the ones who have benefitted had a fair share, or do the “elders” or whoever received the money, keep most of it to fatten their own bank accounts?

It would be great if we could have a poll to see how well the poorer families have fared in the Billions of dollars handed out in their name.

It wasn’t long ago that they were begging for donations to send a child to Europe for treatment, why didn’t the Maori just take it from the monies that we have given them?

I have fine Maori friends who are just as angry that they have recieved nothing from the billions that are swelling the bank accounts of the few.

Treaty settlements less than 1% of spending Treasury states that Total Crown expenses for 2011 were $100 billion and Treaty settlements were $0.5 billion. This is less than 1 per cent of Government spending. Mike Kuipers von Lande claims that defending Treaty settlements is discredited thinking. Treasury figures say he is wrong. Treaty settlements are not a burden to the taxpayer.

Treaty settlements have totalled $1 billion over the past 17 years (Office of Treaty Settlements), not $35 billion as claimed by Mary Brooks.

In this community we have Maori pre-schools, primary schools, a secondary school, tertiary institutes, culture groups, sports clubs, and 22 marae. It is obvious that Maori wish to keep their language and culture alive.

Treaty settlements are not handouts or privileges.

They are compensation for land stolen. They go to tribes not individuals. If Maori tribes wish to use settlement money firstly for the survival of their language and culture that is their right.

Individual Maori do not get handouts from Treaty settlements. They get the opportunity to take part in tribal activities. The fact that their ancestry is less than 100 per cent Maori is irrelevant.

He iwi tahi tatou e rua nga tikanga. We are one people two cultures.

My take on the jazz fiasco The 2010 Jazz Festival on The Strand.

OK. It’s time I talked about the Jazz Festival.

Now that the dust is settling and everyone has been paid for their services (which happened almost immediately but got no coverage) I’d like to look into the

future of the currently troubled festival.

This year’s model was, as I’m sure ninety per cent of people attending would agree, a fantastic event. There was, if you searched through the programme, an extraordinary amount of remarkable music, much of it cheaply or freely available downtown and at the village.

But having an impressive programme is not the only measure of a festival. Importantly, the headline concerts, both at the domain and Baycourt, were once again unsuccessful at attracting audiences, leaving the Tauranga Jazz Society in dubious financial waters.

It is hard not to conclude from this that the organisers spectacularly misjudged the Tauranga audience - either in the choice of acts and/or the pricing of concerts - or were simply unable to properly promote the booked acts. The similar lack of attendance at the previous year’s headline shows by Trombone Shorty suggests that lessons were not learned.

But the approach seemed to be to aim for the stars, even if there was no indication that the paying public wanted that.

The directors appear to have lost sight of two important things: that expansion in a festival of this sort needs to be demand driven; and that the festival is happening in Tauranga.

(There is also the broader issue of whether this year’s approach was the appropriate way to celebrate the prestigious 50th year.

Taking on the second part first, I just repeat – this is Tauranga. It’s not Auckland or Wellington, places with far bigger populations and far bigger jazz-educated audiences. And far more people with disposable income.

Lead the way

Bearing that in mind, it means that audiences here need to be gently led towards shows and that artists need to be heavily promoted. The idea that people will pay $80 to go to an overseas artist they’ve never heard of was comprehensively disproved by the Trombone Shorty shows. No-one had heard of him, no-one wanted to pay to see a trombone player they’d never heard of, and the directors signally failed to show local audiences why he was worth the money (and he was!).

Exactly the same thing happened this year for concerts by Kurt Elling and Klaus Doldinger.

Actually, I thought promotion this year was not just poor, it was at times actively destructive. Talking to audience members during the festival it became immediately clear that many of them thought the Big Birthday Bash cost $165. There had been such a fuss made about the expensive “gold ticket” allocation that significant numbers never realised there were cheaper options.

Strange but depressingly true.

Most worryingly, given the incredibly poor attendance of locals at the big outdoor concert – only 1100 people from a disap-

pointing 4500 - it would appear that the Jazz Festival is losing the special relationship it used to have with the general population of Tauranga.

Suggestions

To regain this and restore the mana of the festival I would suggest that three things need to happen.

Firstly, Arne Herman and Liam Ryan need to step down as directors of the festival. I’m surprised that they didn’t publicly do so almost immediately. Alternatively the jazz society needs to terminate their contracts.

Secondly, the society should arrange a time payment plan to return the $90,000 loan from council that underwrote the Earth Wind & Fire concert. This could be over five years or even more, but some element of trust needs to be restored and responsibility needs to be taken.

Finally, a new structure and direction needs to be announced for the next festival.

All these things are possible and I have no real fears for the future: new jazz society president Darryl Haigh is a man of smarts and integrity and is actively working to get things back on track. I hope he gets the support and encouragement that he deserves.

It’s very easy to be negative about an event of this sort, especially in hard times. There are bound to be blips on a 50 year path, but it would be a shame to forget all that is so good about Tauranga’s National Jazz Festival.

Fantastic Not bad at all Dreadful

Dir: Tomas Alfredson - Starring: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, John Hurt

This film might not be for everyone. It’s a dense tense thriller in which exactly two people die and there are absolutely no explosions or car chases.

And it’s fantastic.

Many people may know the story by now, either from reading John Le Carre’s novel or from the famous old BBC adaptation starring Alec Guinness. Here Gary Oldman takes on the iconic central role of George Smiley and is hypnotically still and restrained.

The plot sees Control (Hurt) and

Smiley dismissed from MI6 after a disastrous operation. A year later Smiley is approached to find a mole in the service.

To do this he talks to a lot of people, digs through the evidence and slowly works his way to the centre of the betrayal.

Some may find all this talking tedious.

I was gripped throughout. The writing is strong and concise, the cast (also including Kathy Bates, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy, Toby Jones and Mark Strong) are all top Brit thesp’s and Swedish director Alfredson (previously of the superb vampire flick Let The Right One In) brilliantly evokes a sense of grim decay in the seventies setting.

A certain amount of detail (primarily the suspects’ backstories) has been lost in condensing what took the BBC several hours to dramatise, but few will complain given the manifold pleasures on display.

It’s fascinating and layered, and I can’t wait to watch it again.

Starting in the sort of England that only exists in the minds of American film directors, War Horse showcases Steven Spielberg’s most sentimental and traditional leanings. As the story of a boy and his little pony canters interminably along not a chance is missed for whimsical cliché or overblown emotional manipulation. About an hour or so in Joey the horse heads of to WWI where many more lives are touched by the miraculous nag. It looks ravishing of course and some will be in equine heaven; other may find the two and a half hour running time an eternity.

Based on a book by the real people, The Bang Bang Club is set during the death throes of apartheid South Africa.

The titular group were four photojournalists who banded together and competed to cover the vividly depicted violence between the ANC and the governmentbacked Zulu Inkarta party. Ryan Philippe and Taylor Kitch play two of these adrenalin junkies, happily putting themselves in insanely dangerous situations. But the action is deftly balanced with the underlying politics, building moral complexities as the bloodshed also takes its mental toll and the country moves towards becoming a new nation.

The Bluelight Anti Drink and Drug Driving Expo returns next month to deliver a challenging, hard-hitting message to young drivers.

The event, at Classic Flyers Museum June 5-8, is designed to highlight the consequences of driving while impaired. This is the fourth year the event has been held.

There are 1000 young people killed or injured on New Zealand roads annually. The Bay of Plenty features nationally as a community at risk and local agencies are determined to drive these figures down.

“By attending this expo, young people and their parents will be better equipped to contribute to shaping attitudes and behaviours to reduce drink driving in our community,” says Tauranga Police tactical co-ordinator, inspector Karl Wright-St Clair.

Recent media attention has highlighted the declining

numbers of youth drink drivers caught on NZ roads.

The expo has contributed significantly to this reduction in Tauranga/Western Bay of Plenty region, says WBOP Bluelight project manager Wendy Nicholls.

“When we started this event in 2009, 15 to 19 year olds made up 27.2 per cent of all drink drivers caught in the Western Bay of Plenty. After our first presentation this dropped to 23.6 per cent, and then 20.4 per cent, which is fantastic. Then last year, with the added assistance of the Legends advertising campaign and the zero youth alcohol limit, this has dropped further, to 17.8 per cent.

“We are hoping to get it below 10 per cent and to start to see a flow-on effect in the 20 to 24 age group.”

Popular Fawlty Towers show is back Detour Theatre’s successful sell-out production of Fawlty Towers last year has led to a sequel.

The outrageous antics of Basil Fawlty, his long-suffering wife Sybil, hapless Spanish waiter Manuel, bemused house staff Polly and a new collection of wacky hotel guests all add up to Fawlty Towers 2 - another side-splitting British comedy at its funniest.

Director Kim Williamson of Detour Theatre says the success of last year’s show demanded a follow-up.

“We were thrilled with the success of last year’s show and have had fans literally demanding another show this year.

“It will include three new hilarious episodes as they appeared on television, so once again the

audience won’t be short-changed on the script.”

Last year’s main actors are back on board and Kim is no doubt the audience is in for one of the funniest shows they will see all year.

Stuart Gunn is looking forward to again taking on the iconic role of Basil.

“It’s utterly exhausting, totally demanding, and one of the best parts you could ever wish to play.”

Matt Simmons will play the zany Manuel, Jo Parkes the eversensible Polly and Lisa Thorne says she will relish the chance to play Sybil Fawlty.

“Basil lives in total fear and trepidation of Sybil and I’m relishing my role as Basil’s tormentor.”

The three new episodes on stage

for Fawlty Towers 2 are: Gourmet Night, where Basil attempts to attract a higher class of guests to hilarious results; Waldorf Salad, in which an American guest gets the better of the Fawltys; and Basil the Rat, where Manuel’s new pet causes chaos with a visit from the hotel health inspector.

The show opens at the Historic Village’s Detour Theatre on June 13 and runs to June 30, with show nights running from Tuesday to Saturday after the opening week.

A group of young Tauranga musicians got a taste of the life of rock musicians this week when they were flown down to perform in Christchurch.

Irlen Syndrome, a visual perceptual difficulty that makes words appear to move or distort on the page, is a piece of the puzzle of dyslexia.

The causes of reading difficulties involve auditory, visual and motor

functions. Cellfield is a world-first plasticity-based intervention directly addressing the inefficient wiring underlying dyslexia.

It integrates the part of the brain required for efficient reading.

Brain imaging research shows poor readers have fewer reading brain circuits, which makes reading too slow for good comprehension. Cellfield enables reading to become more automatic, increasing both fluency and comprehension.

The Cellfield Intervention is operating from the Tauranga Kip McGrath Education Centre.

Girls to talk shop at ladies night Women with a passion for motorcycles are being invited to a Ladies Expo at Bayride Motorcycles on June 7.

The expo will give women the opportunity to find out what machine is best suited for them and how to look after and maintain their bikes.

people to register prior the event, so they can cater for the night.

“It’s really just a lot of tips that ladies don’t really know, like how to choose the right bike for you and motorcycle maintenance that you can do without getting too technical.”

Chrissy says there will be spot prizes, giveaways and, of course, wine and cheese on the night.

“It’s just a big socialising night for the ladies to come out and find out stuff about their motorbikes and riding.

“We start off with a bit of introduction, and have four different information areas.”

Depending on how many people register for the night, they will be broken into four groups and start each group off at a different information area.

“We will have someone there talking about various motorcycle things, whether it be maintenance on your bike or how to kit yourself out with the latest riding gear.

“We also have a special guest who will talk about her motorcycle career, and is the only lady rider who has won a GP Road Racing Championship.”

What is the meaning of life?

Monty Python’s movie ‘The Meaning of Life’ includes a song about the universe.

The song ends, “…And pray that there’s intelligent life somewhere up in space, because there’s [nothing much] down here on earth.”

The woman listening then says, “Makes you feel sort of insignificant doesn’t it?”

After which John Cleese (a Doctor) asks, “Can we have your liver then?”

There are more than 100 billion stars in our galaxy, and they are believed to be more than 100 billion galaxies. We really are so small. One could feel overwhelmed by our seeming insignificance. But that is all changed when we realise the universe is here just for us! From a Christian perspective the vastness of the universe reflects God’s vastness, but this little planet is the focus of his love!

And what is our purpose here? God made us to (1) know His love, and then

(2) to show His love. While our gifts and abilities can be used to bring us pleasure, possessions and power, His purpose is that we use these to help others. So our significance is in what we give rather than what we get. And our giving is filled with meaning through the belief that God sees!

You see, while things on earth are far from equal, the great hope of Christian faith is that eternity exists. Why? Because this perspective alone can bring fairness and meaning to all human life and experience! For example, rewards will not be given to those

who were the best, but to those who made the best of what they had – and for others (this makes the capable rich person and the poor sick person equal)! And our ultimate success will not be in our achievements, but in our moral (selfless) choices and – importantly - our faith!

Could it be that God actually is watching? Might faith and love echo in eternity? Such a belief can bring a huge amount of purpose to your life!

“I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve” (Jeremiah 17:10).

In Ephesians 5:1, Paul encourages believers to “imitate God as beloved children” and although what he means about imitating God is significant and important, let me focus on what Paul says here about ‘beloved children’, referring to all who have been genuinely born again.

Paul is not speaking here of the fact that we are God’s children in the sense of some relationship we have earned or some relationship that is in name only, but he is speaking about the redeemed being deeply loved by God. The term “beloved” that Paul uses of us is the same term that God used in speaking of Jesus in Matthew 3:17 where God spoke in a voice from heaven and said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Although we don’t feel sometimes that God loves us like that when we are going through testing times, the truth is and the facts are that we are the beloved children of the God of heaven and earth. Even the hairs on each of our heads are numbered – not counted, but numbered!

Sometimes we feel like Isaiah must have felt in Isaiah 49 when He says to God in verse 14, “The Lord has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me.” And God says then to Isaiah and He says to you and I today from verses 15 and 16: “Can a woman forget her

nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb?

Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of My hands.”

God loves each of us who truly know Him and who truly follow Jesus as Saviour and as Lord. His love towards us is unceasing, unconditional and unfailing.

When you are feeling you need a fresh touch of the arms of the One who calls you His beloved, spend some time in the first eighteen verses of Psalm 139.

You will find great encouragement in these verses, which speak of the heart of God towards you and of His unceasing care for you.

Hear these words from Romans 8:38 and 38. “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

And finally, my sincere prayer echoes this prayer of Paul in Ephesians 3:16– 19: “that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith— that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” Visit us at www.jesusfirst.org.nz and see you on Sunday.
