Levitating with time wasters If a marmite shortage is Marmageddon, then surely Gareth Morgan’s feline frustrations must be verging on Moggygeddon?

You’d think we’d have more things to worry about. Just stick a bell on Fluffy and get back to the real concerns of the day. Such as whether Facebook should step in to stop unauthorised use of Rachel Smalley’s hijacked photo in a weight loss ad. Or whether White Island is going to spew forth and rain down ash and lumps of smoking tourists upon us.

Apparently not, say officials. There is little concern for the mainland. Now when officials tell us not to worry, that is usually cause for worry.

So it was with some relief that we stopped worrying about volcanic magmageddon this week, when the RR hotline flashed and beeped. We had a caller.

Don’t ya just love it when a telephone canvasser rings, interrupting your busy schedule of worry, to sell you something you don’t need and didn’t know existed?

“No” I hear 130,000 of you Sun readers simultaneously responding.

It’s one of our favourite pastimes, baiting telephone canvassers.

In my view, they have no right to intrude on the privacy of my home, sucking up valuable minutes of my private time, to try to foist something upon me that I don’t need.

If I want a product, I look in the paper to see who is advertising. I call them.

It’s a personal crusade to waste more of the telephone canvassers time than they waste of mine.

I figure that while they are entertaining me, my time is not wasted and I get a free show. We once convinced a caller that my wife was having a baby and she needed to talk us through it.

This week’s victim was a clas-

sic. Natalie, with an incredibly nasal Kiwi accent, was determined to sell me something to do with solar power. I think.

She asked for the householder.

I said he was busy, holding the house. But she was welcome to talk to me, the phone holder.

She was perplexed.

What do you mean, holding the house?

Well he’s the householder, isn’t he? He wouldn’t be much of a householder if he wasn’t.

I arranged that I would therefore go and hold the house, so the householder could take a break and talk on the phone.

There was a great amount of manoeuvring to get the householder to let go, momentarily, while the deputy householder took over, so the primary householder could get to the phone to talk to Natalie.

Putting on my best householder voice, I had a great conversation with her.

It seems that she wanted to sell me some sort of product to go on the roof. I explained we didn’t have a roof. She asked how we kept the rain out.

Pigeons, seagulls

I gave her the short version (about 15 minutes) explanation of our new experimental electro-magnetic moisture repelling system, which uses a forcefield of very, very excited electrons to deflect incoming raindrops away from the house, while maintaining great air circulation and adding immensely to the indoor/outdoor flow.

It doesn’t work for pigeons. It might work for seagulls, though.

I reminded her that it is the tenth anniversary of the space shuttle Columbia exploding while re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere, killing all seven astronauts. So that space flying doesn’t work so well.

She then started casting aspersions on our forcefield roof, doubting its weather shielding properties.

I pointed out, it was usually fine, as long my wife didn’t take the batteries out, to run her personal levitation device.

I took a few minutes aside to swat seagulls that had made it through the forcefield. On returning, Natalie said maybe she should talk to my wife, who might make more sense.

I said she couldn’t, my wife was levitating eight feet off the ground and couldn’t come down unless someone took the batteries out of the levitation machine.

Natalie said she’d had enough of talking to me. She didn’t believe I was married.

No one would be stupid enough to marry someone that made as little sense as me. I reminded her I was The Householder, but that didn’t seem to carry much credibility now.

I said I had to go anyway, the deputy householder was getting cramp and I had to take over again.

Besides, I had to do something about my wife, who was bobbing dangerously close to the ceiling fan.

Natalie hung up.

Katikati man missing in harbour entrance

The search continues for Katikati man Tim Mair who went missing when his boat capsized near Bowentown. The 52-year-old beekeeper was heading out for an evening fish with his 15 year-old-son, 23-year-old daughter, seven-year-old grandson and a 14-year-old family friend when the aluminum runabout capsized around 5.30pm on Monday.

The four young people managed to make it to shore on Matakana Island and flagged down passing boaties who alerted authorities.

Only the seven-year-old was found to be wearing a lifejacket. When The Weekend Sun went to print Tim Mair was still unaccounted for.

Man dies in Pyes Pa crash

A 46-year-old man died when the van he was driving ploughed head-on into a rockface on Pyes Pa Road this week.

The crash happened in the gorge section of State Highway 36 around 1pm on Wednesday.

The man was the sole occupant of the white Mitsubishi van.

Olympic canoe centre?

The Wairoa River has been shortlisted as a candidate for the high performance training centre for Canoe Racing NZ. The local river is competing with Lakes Pupuke in Auckland, Karapiro near Cambridge and the Blue Lake near Rotorua.

News the Wairoa River may become part of the national canoe racing scene, training the next generation of Olympic medallists, came just as the BOP Canoe Club was preparing its own plans for a training facility on the Wairoa.

“The stars aligned,” says club member Terry Newlands, who took the news to the first Tauranga City Council meeting of the year on Tuesday.

“We have been working for a few months getting our proposal together, and this guy comes down and says ‘you have been short listed’,” says Terry.

The Wairoa is sheltered, has good depth

and several straight kilometre long sections suitable for time trial training. The fact the lower river is tidal is also in Tauranga’s favour because it boasts 40 minute windows of still water at each high and low tide.

The BOP Canoe Club began in 2003 and lives out of containers stored at the Waimarino Canoe Centre.

The club has three possible venues for a training facility: land in Taniwha Place just down the road from Waimarino, off Miles Lane or from Parau Farms.

The club’s been looking at a 250m2 facility with storage toilets showers. If the Wairoa gets the nod from High Performance Sport they will be looking at a 450m2 facility, says Terry.

Consultant Peter Day needed the council’s endorsement of the Wairoa possibility to add to the report he’s preparing on the issue.

Canoe Racing NZ’s high performance manager Grant Restall says a final decision is still some time away.

Coastal drop-in survey starts The first in a series of three coastal survey drop-in sessions will be held at Mount Drury tomorrow, Saturday February 2.

City Council parks

staff will host the first of the drop-in sessions as part of their review of coastal management.

Driver swap in fatal Kenya crash

Bethlehem College has launched an investigation into how 18-year-old former student David Fellows ended up driving the mini-van that crashed killing four people in Kenya.

It was revealed on Tuesday that a driver swap had occurred before the crash and David was actually the driver of the mini-van, not Kenyan man Christopher Mmata, who died in the crash, as previously believed.

The crash on January 15 killed Tauranga anesthetist Brian Johnston and his wife Grace along with 19-year-old Caitlin Dickson.

Bethlehem College principal Eoin Crosbie said he was informed of the driver swap Saturday, January 26 . Eoin says David had been told by the college’s Kenyan liaison Calvine Ominde to keep quiet until he returned to New Zealand. Calvine told TV3’s Firstline he denied claims there was any ‘cover-up’.

They want to hear from anyone with an opinion about how Tauranga City Council manages the coast.

The Council has also been running a Coastal Profile survey which not only tells you whether you’re a Salty Nana or a Bronze Goddess, but it also gives you a chance to win an iPad Mini.

The drop in site will be on the coastal side of Mount Drury, Saturday 2 February from 10am - 2pm. The survey and iPad competition can also be entered on the council’s website.

Teacher admits to sex charge

Former Otumoetai College teacher Andrew Loader has admitted to paying to watch two people, one of whom is under 18-years-old, have sex twice.

The 49-year-old appeared in Tauranga District Court this week where he pleaded guilty to a charge under the Prostitution Reform Act 2003.

The previous charge of paying a 16-year-old for sexual services was withdrawn and replaced with one charge of contract sex with a person under the age of 18. The police summary of facts reveals Loader agreed to pay $120 to watch an 18-year-old Tauranga man have sex with his then 16-year-old girlfriend on a bed at his home on two occasions in November.

Loader no longer works at the school and has been stood down by the Teacher’s Council pending a disciplinary hearing.

Fishing victim lived Kiwi life

The father of the Te Puke fisherman whose body was found on Otamarakau Beach says his son lived for fishing and hunting.

Bennett Williams James White died while fishing at Rogers Beach between Pukehina and Otamarakau on January 27.

The 26-year-old left a group of friends on the beach to check on his longlines but he failed to return.

Friends went looking for the experienced fisher around 8.30pm and found his bike in the sand partially submerged. His body was located further down the beach around 11.30pm.

Total fire ban District lockdown

A total fire ban in the Tauranga Moana Rural Fire District was declared this week by principal rural fire officer Barry Low. “We have suspended the issue of fire permits, which means that we should not be seeing any authorised burns,” says Barry.

“We urge people to take all possible care when using tools or machinery which could generate a spark. Ride-on mowers, chainsaws, trail-bikes, grinders, these are all capable of starting a fire under the current dry conditions. We also ask smokers to take care with cigarette butts.”

The fire ban includes the Western Bay of Plenty District, rural areas of Tauranga City, Dept of Conservation lands within the Western Bay of Plenty, and Mayor and Motiti Islands.

DOC conservation lands include the KaimaiMamaku Forest Park, which is also under a total fire ban, says Barry.

“Visitors may use gas cookers and gas barbecues, but no one should light a campfire. There have been two wild-fires on Western Bay Conservation lands in the past few days, both of which were deliberately lit.”

People lighting fires will be held responsible for the consequences, for the costs of any damage caused by the fire, and for the costs of controlling and extinguishing it. The fire ban in effect until further notice.

What lies beneath Tauranga SubAqua Club founder Chris Isherwood dives for rubbish with club member Darren Foulston.

A human skull is not what Chris Isherwood expected to find during a clean-up mission on Mayor Island.

Among the usual suspects – plastics, polystyrene and a lot of jandals – the skull remains the strangest item he has come across while cleaning up Bay of Plenty waters.

“We contacted the police obviously, a pathologist came out and they did their thing. It was extremely old.

Apparently, the vertebrae were intact down to about the waist.”

Chris is the founder of Tauranga SubAqua Club – a group consisting mostly of divers, who have been regularly undertaking clean-up dives across the Bay since 2003.

“A bunch of us were keen to start a club, we had identified there was a lot of rubbish in the harbour, we used to do our training in Pilot Bay, and it just got worse and worse. We thought we could provide a valuable service because we’re qualified divers.

“Having said that, diving clubs have done an excellent job over the years on environmental days.”

While the skull was located during a trip in 2007, the club’s recent excursion to Mayor Island on January 19 still rendered a four metre boat filled with rubbish from the island’s foreshore.

“Weather conditions were not good for landing the club’s RIB on some of the beaches, however the team was able to land at Western Bay and Honeymoon Bay and remove rubbish.

“We were horrified the first time we went out there.

This time was really cool to see there was a lot less.”

Chris says the team is passionate about keeping the Bay’s oceans in pristine condition.

“We’ve got a great environment here, there is plenty of incentive to maintain it.”

The club’s next project is scheduled at Lake Okareka in March. They credit Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s Environment Enhancement Fund for making the cleanup possible.

6 Papamoa man hooks biggest fish

Papamoa man Alec Bonner hooked the biggest prize at the Rotorua Fishing and Casting Club’s surf fishing bonanza at Matata last weekend.

Alec snatched up a cash prize of $6000 for his big catch – a snapper weighing 2.23kg, the heaviest fish of the competition.

A total of 800 rods were registered for the fishing bonanza, the biggest turn out in a while says club president Dave Brown.

Entrants included 50 juniors under the age of 11 and 100 women.

Fresh from winning the national under-23 beach volleyball age group, Tauranga pair Holly Boyle and Beniece Douch, are preparing for another beach battle this weekend.

Competing in the big league during the past fortnight, the pair – who have just finished high school – will be playing in front of a home crowd in the final of the National Beach Tour NZ Open series.

Holly says it was great to be in the age group title at the Mount three weeks ago, and is hoping the hometown advantage will boost their chances again this weekend.

Tournament organiser Tim Cleaver says the pair is among the Bay of Plenty talent competing against top international talent at the competition being held near Commons Ave on the Mount Main Beach.

“They are up against two-time Olympian Tamsin Hinchley, who will pair up with New Zealander Micah Lindsay-Brown, who took silver last weekend.

“The other team to watch is the so far undefeated German women’s pairing of Chanelle Labourer and Julia Sude who have won the two other international tour stops.” In the men’s tournament, brothers Ben and Edwin O’Dea will be competing against brother

Sam and his partner Brendon Heath for their first NZ Open title, but standing in their way are some top US and Fijian pairings.

Tim urges anyone interested to come along and watch the top international competition from the free grandstands, and thanks businesses for their sponsorship that makes it possible. He says support is critical to keep the event here in Tauranga.

Holly and Beniece, who have only recently joined forces, are downplaying the age-group achievement saying the real test had been during the past two weeks against the open teams including some international visitors.

After making third place in the first round the pair fell to ninth place in Hamilton last weekend, but Beniece says they are determined to finish fourth this weekend.

For Holly the series will be one of her last beach volleyball events for a while, with her shifting to Otago to study soon. Beniece will be continuing to play and coach as she waits for confirmation of a US College scholarship.

On Saturday there will be pool play from 9am.

Quarter finals will be held on Sunday from 9am, with semifinals at 11am, followed by the finals (women’s around 3pm, men’s 4pm).

Bullying no comedy They might look like cute and cuddly soft toys, but Tauranga puppeteer Dan Martin knows the power hidden within his puppets.

In the 45 years since he first picked up a puppet, Dan has been amazed at the impact they can have on children.

Now he wants his puppets into schools to tackle the serious issue of bullying – but he needs help.

“It’s a terrible issue and can even prompt students to attempt suicide – but the feedback to the show has been great.”

Dan was delighted to hear from teachers at Kawerau Intermediate about the impact his ‘Ban the Bully’ show had when he

performed it, but says he needs sponsorship to roll the show out.

“The teachers were watching the kids they knew were bullies when they were watching the show and they were hanging their heads in shame because of the impact of the message that was coming through to them.”

Teachers told him they subsequently noticed a “marked reduction” in bullying at the school – something Dan would love to be able to help achieve at other schools.

“Children always seem to be more affected by, and respond to, the puppet show than anything else. It can have a more profound effect. I think it’s because they can go through the experience without actually suffering the consequences.

Dan came up with the concept three years ago when he was a Tauranga Intermediate School chaplain but has been unable to attract the sponsorship to get it into schools. Frustrated by being unable to satisfy a strong demand at schools he told The Weekend Sun about his mission.

“There is more and more awareness about the problem in schools and it would be great to get this into schools to help.”

Underarm bowling?

We all love to give it to the Aussies and this weekend members of Bowls Mount Maunganui are aiming to do just that.

In a first for the club they have been challenged to a competition with a group of visiting bowlers who are visiting on the cruise ship, Sun Princess, which docks in Tauranga tomorrow.

Club secretary Garrick Hamlyn says everyone is excited about the challenge from the group of touring Queensland bowlers, and they will be doing their best to represent the club and country. “I’m certain they will be giving it their best to win alright.”

Garrick says the serious competition will be focussed on the top mixed four who will be playing the Queenslanders best four, while the other 43 visiting bowlers will mix up with the Mount bowlers for a social competition.

Club member Don Shand says there was a lot of interest in playing against the visitors, with some serious competition this week to be picked for the mixed four. “We’re pretty serious about our bowls at the club, but when this sort of thing happens it also lots of fun.”

The match against the nations will take place at Bowls Mount Maunganui tomorrow.

Cultural celebration It will be an early start on Wednesday for a group of children from Te Kura o Matapihi, including Heremaia Walker, 11, and Te Haana Gear, 9, pictured here.

The school’s top kapa haka group will be rising to perform at the special Waitangi Day dawn service on Mount Drury (Hopukiore) as part of the annual commemorations of the Treaty of Waitangi’s signing.

School principal Leonie Walker says 12 of the school’s best performers will take part in the Waitangi service, which is a first for the school.

are excited about performing even though some did not understand the significance of Waitangi Day. “They are always excited about performing, so that won’t be any different.”

The dawn service at Mount Drury (Hopukiore) starts at 6.30am with a karakia (blessing) by tangata whenua followed by a community service and open forum giving anyone the chance to have a say about Waitangi Day. Those taking part are encouraged to gather from 6am.

The service has been organised by iwi with the support of community churches, to commemorate the signing of the treaty. They encourage anyone interested to attend.

The sixth generation New Zealander of EnglishWelsh and Scandinavian descent admits it’s the first dawn service he will attend, but is excited about sharing his views on the importance of the Treaty of Waitangi.

“To me it (being non-Maori) doesn’t matter because I’m a New Zealander and that’s what is important about the treaty.”

Joe says it was a surprise and a privileged to be asked by the organisers to offer a young non-Maori perspective on the treaty.

“What the treaty means to me is it makes me a New Zealander – it makes me part of the country. It means I have the right to live here, to be part of the land and have been invited into the culture of what New Zealand is.”

Joe, an active member of Changepoint Church, describes himself as a passionate New Zealander, fuelled with a desire for New Zealand to fulfil its potential. He believes this is why he was chosen by community church groups to speak.

Housing the homeless Welcome Bay resident Kellie Kioa and business partner Cherelle Veatupu are enlisting the help of the Tauranga community to give homeless families somewhere to live.

After living in emergency housing herself, and homing a family of 10 with her, Kellie decided to start a not-for-profit organisation providing homes for Tauranga families - Te Tawharau o te Ora. “We know that it’s a much needed facility here in Tauranga. There are lots of families that get declined from Housing New Zealand or private rentals.

“Whatever situation they got into that predicament is not for us to judge but we will work with them and then hopefully we will be able to offer lifestyle programmes where we can get them re-established back into the community.”

A total of eight families are registered with the

organisation since the business launched in July 2012 but Kellie and Cherelle are funding the organisation out of their own pockets and cannot afford to home the families themselves.

“It depresses me when I get a phone call from somebody and I can’t offer them a home straight away.

Even though we can’t offer them an actual place to live, we are advocating for them.”

The pair hopes to open a motel facility where families can be housed in units.

A Polynesian themed charity ball at Tauranga Racecourse on July 6 will help raise money for the organisation. Gate Pa New World has donated gift baskets for a silent auction at the ball.

Ask Te Puna author Tommy Kapai and he will say there’s an art to storytelling and a place for it in the future.

Thanks to a New Zealand-first course fronted by Tommy, Tauranga residents can learn the tools and techniques of storytelling too.

Tommy is supported by a handful of the region’s best storytellers, including Joe Harawira, Awanui Black and Oceanbooks editor in chief Jenny Argante and is encouraging people of all ages and backgrounds to give the four-day course a go.

He says there is demand for storytelling in Tauranga and a place for it in the corporate world.

“It dawned on me, the art of storytelling is becoming more fashionable. There are jobs in storytelling.

People come here from all around the world and they want to know the story of Mauao.”

Tommy has developed four stories featuring Tauranga Harbour, Mauao, the Battle of Gate Pa,

and Te Puna, which will be taught to the class, including a lesson aboard a boat on the Tauranga Harbour. “I don’t want to just get students, there are probably older people out in Matua who were teachers and can tell great stories.

“There are Maori fellas that might have a few teeth missing but they’re great story tellers, those are the people I believe are great ambassadors.

“For me, I have my teaching tools, I can hold any class for an hour – I use what I call ‘edutainment’.

“I teach with humour and fun, other people use drama. You don’t want to give them 1000 facts, what we are not is historians, we’re storytellers.”

The course is in conjunction with Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and begins in March, with 160 places available and going fast.

long. City Hall is in the process of a major reorganisation including all department head jobs being advertised. Obviously a new CEO would need to have an input into who the management team is for a new structure. So this has dragged on when it had been anticipated a CEO appointment would be made before Christmas. I supported the restructure, in fact I had anticipated the restructure to commence July 2011, and take around three months. But circumstances dictated otherwise and now we’re in a not too happy position.

A slow start

A new CEO is unlikely to be able to start within three months so the annual plan is unlikely to receive much influence or impact from the new appointee. Then there is the silly season leading up to the Council election in October and this has already started.

There are reasons how we got to this position which I may be able to elaborate on in the future, some of which I’m unhappy about.

A belated acknowledgement to Trevor Wright – who retired at Christmas time from Council after 30 or so years’ service. Trevor is one of those unsung heroes working at the coal face so to speak, who ensure you can live a clean and healthy life with Tauranga’s pristine water supply. Trevor was plant operator at our water processing plants. Trevor was also part of the so-called (by the Bay Times) Famous Five who in 1996 tripped around the world inspecting some 20-30 different water processing and treatment systems. I’ve noted before that this project came in 20 per cent under budget, on time and has continuously delivered high quality water with, so far, no problems. It even kept up when we got ash from the Ruapehu eruption. Trevor’s function on the trip was to get out the back and find out what the actual operators thought of their particular technology as opposed to what the politicians and engineers thought was happening. Despite what, in my opinion, was a sometimes vitriolic and unbalanced reporting regime from local media we made the right decision which has resulted in Tauranga enjoying leading edge water process technology at minimal cost – with, so far, no water restrictions. Thanks for your part in this Trevor – you helped make a difference. Tauranga’s water supply could be under threat, along with the rest of NZ’s, of a move by Central Government to privatise all water supplies. In your best interests of course. Just like electricity reforms.

A shining example

Tauranga is a shining example of how to run an extremely cost effective water supply – with about eight staff – no director’s fees, no profits, no tax. No dividends to overseas investment hawks. Don’t be

conned if and when this privatisation bid starts. Our water supply should be sacrosanct and I for one will be staging strong resistance if need be.

Olympic news

More good news with the Wairoa River being chosen as one of the two sites for a high performance canoe training centre.

Government will fund $1 million for facilities to enhance canoeing prospects at Olympic Games level. This will a great asset combining with the cycling centre being built near Cambridge, so elected members were informed by the local canoe club who are coordinating the project.

Lengthy discussions

More lengthy discussions in confidential on Council’s part in the appeal by Progressive Enterprises against the Independent Commissioner’s decision to decline their application to build a supermarket on the Otumoetai Trust Hotel site.

This is a judicial procedure matter – hence confidentiality – and intensely legal. Read expense all round. Council is inextricably intertwined whether it likes it or not.

A three month option has been granted to a preferred developer to explore prospects for a 150 room hotel on the TV3 site at 21 Durham Street. With parking requirements being significantly reduced, along with easing on commercial development restrictions, this is yet another chapter in a long drawn out saga going back to the 80s. In my view anyone building such a hotel will be on a winner and once it’s up and running everyone will wonder why it took so long.

It may be that had Councils throughout the years relaxed the requirements then it would be there now, but it’s been evolution, not revolution that has taken us to where we are now.

More great news for our city. ASB Bank have agreed to sponsor TECT Arena/Baypark Stadium to the tune of $750,000 which they have paid up front.

Whilst it’s great mileage, hopefully, for them it’s also a wonderful gesture to our community.

Deliberations continue

Annual Plan deliberations continued and I’ll bring you comments and views on the details next week.

The good news is that the rates revenue requirement is not altering significantly from last year due in no small part to Council’s efforts to cut expenditure without cutting levels of service. At time of writing it looked like a 1-2 per cent rise but there’s still a long way to go – including your input – before a final decision.

We have had ample warning. It is pleasing that the Chamber of Commerce has taken this initiative but the Western Bay needs people to stand up in the next few months and make themselves heard.

You must have your say. Give them a piece of your mind. Let them know who’s boss. Give them both barrels.

Stand up, speak up or shut up. Your opinion is as important as anyone else’s.

It is strange that in this communication age individual voices are being lost. Civilisation developed around our ability as individuals and groups to communicate.

John Donne recognised that no man is an island and to be no part of any body is to be nothing. If we lose our right to speak up effectively in our society, we are nothing and our whole society will suffer.

There are so many ways to speak out now but so few ways where anyone is

listening. Voicing an opinion is absolutely bad form if you are challenging your network of friends and might make them uncomfortable with ideas for which they have absolutely no interest. If your friends don’t care, they are not much use anyway. You have to have a public voice.

We need strident calls for change from soap boxes in the park. We need them now. We need loud arguments in the pub over which politician is telling lies. We need face-to-face debates on television. The guts have been taken out of dissent and individuals are wrapping blankets around themselves and hiding. Facebook is a wimpy form of communication. It is a little like leaving the blinds to your front room open for all the world to see and leaving the door to the bathroom open for your special friends. Twitter of course is just an equivalent to signed graffiti and is definitely not a complete communication system. Make a stand now. Bring on the bumper stickers.

Of course you will have to know what you are talking about and there is a challenge to the media to keep the public up-to-date but the responsibility is still on the individuals to monitor and control change in our society.

There is going to be plenty of political fluff this year with it being an election year but this cannot be allowed to be divert us from addressing the more important changes on how we will be governed that have started already.

This year is an election year for local government and that means all sorts of interesting debates and discussions are taking place up and down the country.

A big focus is how we keep delivering services, and delivering them better, at the least cost. This is not limited to councils… the economic climate dictates that all businesses, including public services, drive down their costs while delivering their ‘product’.

We all want our region, the Bay of Plenty, to grow and prosper, but we’re compelled to do this on low or no funding increases. So Bay of Plenty Regional Council is doing what most businesses are doing. They’re looking at how they can be fully effective and efficient, while still delivering the wide range of services required by a variety of laws and agreements and demanded by their communities.

In fact the chief executive Mary-Ann MacLeod has been instructed by council to have a close look at all spending and how the council can deliver to higher

effectiveness at least costs. She has a strong commitment to this and great staff who every day do the best they can with the ratepayers’ dollars.

We are seeing progress already. I’ve already seen how the executive leadership team has been streamlined while also being more accountable for what is delivered.

I’ve been impressed with how the regional council has shared services such as human resources, communications, IT and geospatial services with other councils in the Bay. By sharing services all councils have saved money and worked better together. It’s exciting to know staff and managers are looking for more ways to share services and gain more efficiencies. More will be delivered this year under the council’s programme banner of ‘doing business better’. It’s a big year for managers and staff as they’ve promised to achieve greater efficiency and effectiveness in everyday work through a rolling programme of efficiency reviews.

The beach, food and wine, and reading are among the top things Kiwis enjoy at summertime in the Bay of Plenty, research has revealed.

A survey, conducted

by Tourism Bay of Plenty, asked 1033 New Zealanders what they most enjoy about summer, with the beach coming out on top.

A total of 34 per cent of respondents say the beach, including swimming and sunbathing, is their summer favourite.

Women led this sentiment, with 38 per cent saying the beach is their favourite, compared to 29 per cent of men.

Enjoying food and wine also rated highly at 21 per cent, while reading and ‘doing nothing’ tied for third place at 12 per cent each. Men are more interested in water sports than women, with 14 per cent compared to five per cent,

while women preferred reading, with 16 per cent compared to eight per cent for men.

Tourism Bay of Plenty general manager Rhys Arrowsmith says he isn’t surprised by the findings. “Of course we love the beach – New Zealand has a proud beach holiday culture and most Kiwis still value that.

“In the coastal Bay of Plenty we see thousands of holiday-makers coming to the region to experience an authentic Kiwi summer at our beaches. Plus, we have the most sunshine hours in the North Island so they’re more likely to get great weather here than anywhere else.” When asked about their favourite summer smell, 32 per cent say they prefer the beach/sea air. The smell of a barbecue came in close second at 30 per cent, with freshly cut grass third at 10 per cent.

Seeking young technological entrepreneurs Tauranga’s young technological entrepreneurs are being sought for TrustPower’s annual Mashup competition.

Bay of Plenty college students are being invited to showcase their best computer, marketing and business skills at the competition in April.

A Mashup is a webpage that uses and combines data, presentation or functionality from two or more sources, according to the Mashup website.

Students are encouraged to create a webpage useful for Bay of Plenty residents and to successfully outline, implement and market their business plan.

Trustpower’s general manager of business solutions and technology, Simon Clarke, says it’s important to encourage young students in technological areas.

“Mashup provides us with a wonderful opportunity to build on our existing connections with the education sector, and help with the development of up-and-coming technology talent… the young people

who will go on to become the Bay of Plenty’s technology brains and innovators of the future,” Simon says.

Mashup coordinator Bruce Fraser agrees and says the competition gives the students an opportunity not just to build their technological skills, but also to think logistically about long-term business plans.

“We’re really keen to push-on and get the kids thinking about commercialising their products,” Bruce says.

Last year a home-schooled team from Katikati won first place with a students’ portal they created for Bay of Plenty Polytechnic which included information about bus routes and accommodation for potential students.

This year’s competition is during the weekend of April 13-14 at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic’s Bongard Centre, where the polytechnic provides computers and broadband connections.

Tauranga IT and business mentors will be on hand to provide support and guidance to the teams, which have been invited from all of the Bay of Plenty’s 24

secondary colleges. Bruce invites any IT or business professionals wishing to volunteer their time to mentoring the teams to phone him, 021 687 533.

Up to 400 of the North Island’s top horse men and women are putting their mounts through their paces at the Bayleys New Zealand World Cup final show jumping events at the Tauranga Race Course this weekend.

The event began on Thursday evening at Mills Reef Winery, transferring to the racecourse on Friday morning where competition continues until Sunday.

Some of the country’s most experienced and successful riders will take part, as will up and coming younger riders and one of the organisers Sally Steiner says events such as this are the training ground for future national, international and even Olympic champions. “The competition is a great opportunity for the public to see show

jumping by beautiful horses and well turned-out riders from pony club age to our oldest competitors who are in their 70s,” says Sally. She has co-ordinated the event with husband Phillip and Marie and Dave King.

All are members of Tauranga Showjumping.

Most competitors will stay on site at the racecourse with their horses and Sally says the event, which brings so many people into the city, represents an important economic benefit to the Tauranga region.

A line up of international qualified judges will be awarding ribbons and trophies to those who complete the best rounds in each event.

The race course venues are open from 8.30pm to 5pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There is no admission charge at either venue.

Back for another year, the Mount Beach Bald event is challenging residents to “shave your lid for a brave kid”.

Debuting last year, more than 50 people shaved their heads to raise money for children with cancer, including token Tauranga residents Dame Susan Devoy and Port of Tauranga CEO Mark Cairns. Mark managed to raise more than $60,000.

In light of this, 2013’s event is targeting the region’s corporate leaders with the ‘Big Boss Challenge’.

“We’re challenging all big bosses to register to shave their lids because giving starts at the top,” says Child Cancer Foundation fundraising manager Delwynne Hahunga.

“Big Bosses can be CEOs, general managers, coaches, parents, team captains, etc.

Ballistic garden leads to delicious Gazpacho This year the garden has gone ballistic and recently after an absence of 3 days, neglect had led to an over-abundance of very ripe tomatoes.

There were some shiny green capsicums along with the basil pumping its pungent aroma as I picked ripe tomatoes from the ground were they had fallen.

The temperature was soaring, the cicadas singing a constant song. Yes this is summer!

Away from the heat in the cool of the kitchen the tomatoes are washed, a few cloves of garlic peeled capsicums diced and a

few scrapes of bread are soaked.

Nothing beats the flavour of your own tomatoes and when you have heaps and it’s a sticky hot day, a cooling gazpacho soup is quick and easy to make and has to be good for you.

Gazpacho has ancient roots and is a variant of a middle eastern soup made with bread, olive oil, water and garlic.

Once in Spain it became a part of the cuisine with the addition of tomatoes.

Most variations of Gazpacho use soaked bread which acts as an emulsifier when either pounded or blended with the garlic and olive oil, believe me I have tried without the bread as a gluten free version but the soup lacks all-important creaminess and texture.

You can enjoy this soup before the long lazy barbecue with some grilled pita or flat bread, garnish with chopped fresh herbs such as parsley, chives and of torn pieces of basil and drops of olive oil.

Garden Gazpacho Serves six

Ingredients 1.5kg tomatoes diced 150 grams slightly stale crusty bread diced soaked in ½ cup water for 20 minutes 1red and 1green de-seeded capsicums 2 cloves fresh garlic 1 short cucumber peeled de seeded diced 150 ml virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon of tomato paste 2-3 tablespoons red wine or sherry vinegar salt and pepper to taste a few basil leaves a few parsley sprigs 1cup ice water

Method Drain off the bread and place in food processor with almost all of the remaining ingredients.

Reserve some for garnishing finished soup. Blitz most of the ingredients together until a fine purée, then stain though a sieve pulse remaining ingredients and add without straining to texturise the soup and finally add the

Search continues for best scarecrow Scarecrows were traditionally strawfilled figures wearing a farmer’s own old clothing and used to scare crows away from grain crops.

But organisers of the Bay’s Best Scarecrow competition this month are expecting much more interesting characters.

The contest is part of the Bethlehem Town Centre’s Vintage Fair on February 23 and 24, and centre manager David Hamilton says the scarecrow contest fits well with the fair’s old-school community theme.

Entries are open for children and adults and all are invited to use their imagination to create scarecrows to wow the judges and the public.

David says the entries can be thoroughly traditional or completely “off the wall” in their design and clothing.

The contest is part of the Bay’s Biggest

Pumpkin contest, which is also a feature of the fair, and both events are sponsored by Bethlehem Town Centre, Kings Seeds, Media Works and SunMedia.

The fair promises to be colourful and entertaining. “The town centre shops will be dressed in colourful bunting and many will have market stalls.

There will be music, entertainment and older-style rides for children, all within the outdoor environment of the village centre.”

While entries for the pumpkin contest have closed there is still time to enter the scarecrow competitions.

The categories for the scarecrow contest are: best scarecrow – adult; best design and finish; best scarecrow – child and best effort and imagination.

Child country star makes TV debut Just like country singer Dolly Parton, Tauranga singing sensation Georgia BakerTrebilco could be working ‘nine to five’ as she composes a song for her television debut.

Georgia is set to make her television debut in May.

The 12-year-old will feature in country music television show ‘My Country Song’ where she will perform two songs – one of which she has composed.

The youngster has written a couple of songs before and says at first writing songs was tricky – now she finds her inspiration from those around her.

“At my age it’s kind of hard because you don’t really know what to write about. You can’t just write about love because you’re not at that stage yet.

“But then I started writing love songs about other people in their relationships. What I see from my point of view. It’s really fun.”

Georgia started singing when she was eight years old and has won numerous competitions, including the New Zealand Country Music Awards Entertainer of the year 2012.

This year will mark the first time Georgia has performed on television.

Maori television junior publicist Brooke Hawe says the show is not a competition.

“It’s more a celebration of the singer and the songs and the mentoring that takes place.”

My Country Song is a 13-part show where Maori Television crews travel throughout New Zealand searching for talent. “Basically it’s like a grassroots country talent show. It features emerging song writing and singing talents around small town New Zealand.”

A great music and dance programme for pre-schoolers, which has been holding parties in various summery locations in recent weeks, is resuming its sessions at Chipmunks, in Chapel Street, next week.

Tiny Boppers’ Chipmunks sessions begin February 8, and run every Wednesday and Friday from 9.30am during school term time.

Plunge pool saves fish Banned from the fishpond, the boss has devised a clever plan to keep me and my friends cool during the summer – without beating up on the long suffering goldfish.

He got us a dog pool. Not just a muddy hole in the ground, but a tough plastic container from our good friends at Payless Plastics.

They’ve sold a good number to the owners of dogs, looking for a cooling dip on hot summer days.

Under the shady pohutukawa, the dog pool is filled with water and when we come home panting from our big runs, we jump straight in. The boss changes the water every week, using it to water Mrs Boss’ vege garden. By then, it’s got a few added nutrients from muddy, sandy mutts

Thanks boss. Now could you just consider a waterslide, bumper boats and maybe a wind-up plastic duck?

Carpal tunnel syndrome can be cause by inflamed flexor tendons which cause swelling in the wrist, which compresses the median nerve. I was once an inflammatory right-arm train-wreck with bursitis in my elbow, right hand carpal tunnel and severe inflammation of right hand tendons. At one stage my right hand was so swollen and painful that it probably would have been more comfortable to be without it. Fortunately these have all resolved and it is wonderful to have my hand back.

The key to nutritional therapy is to make sure you ‘starve’ inflammation from your diet by avoiding high omega 6 plant oils while maximising omega 3 rich fish, fish oil and some seeds. The one exception to the omega 6 rule is evening primrose oil that, while high in omega 6, is very anti-inflammatory because its gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) restricts immune system generated inflammation. My favourite anti-inflammatory nutrients are OPCs, resveratrol, curcumin (turmeric extracts) and, of course, omega 3 fish oils.

The lymphatic system and breast health Breast health has started to become a focus for so many women due to the increase of breast cancer statistics.

The lymphatic system is often underestimated in its role in assisting with breast health. Part of the lymphatic system’s role is draining lymphatic fluid from the vessels within the breast tissue. The gorgeous summer weather the Bay is having makes it the perfect time to rediscover the joys of cycling, says Sport BOP recreation advisor Nicki Scott.

Nicki is encouraging everyone to make the most of the balmy days and get involved in Play in the Bay’s Bike Month this month.

“We have a great programme with something for everyone with a range of fun and competitive events.”

The month kicks off with a basic bike workshop that will teach information needed to take care of your bike, from changing a tyre to your recommended regular maintenance routine.

The workshop will be held at AvantiPlus Mount Maunganui, 2 Owens Place, on Monday, February 4 from 6-7pm.

On Wednesday, you can discover Tauranga’s many bike pathways with the first in a series of four weekly tours that cover different areas across the city.

Bruce Galloway from Tauranga City Council (Ph 577 7000) will show you paths that link parks and reserves in the south Tauranga area, starting from Cambridge Rd Park in Bethlehem (5.45pm) through to Greerton.

Also on Wednesday, BMX beginners and learners can have a go at riding on the Cambridge Rd track in an introductory session ideal for under 10-year-olds.

Preserving plants against the dry Well, I guess it has to be all about preserving water at the moment. There’s not much rain in the forecast either and the ground is getting really dry.

The best plan is to get some mulch around your plants to conserve the moisture in the ground. This could be anything that sits on the surface and is loose, to cut down the evaporation from the surface.

Straw, bark chips and shredded garden waste are all good mulches. If your ground is not mulched and is compacted on the surface, the moisture will always rise to the surface from the capillary action in the soil and then be evaporated into the air. If this is the case and you don’t have any mulch, it is best to make sure you hoe the ground to loosen the surface.

This breaks the capillaries –

that is the fine tubes that lift moisture up to the surface – leaving loose soil on the top.

Although this will soon look really dry on the surface, it is keeping moisture down where you need it.

Also when you are hoeing the weeds up, leave them on the surface. It may not look tidy but is also helping to conserve the moisture.

If you do water the garden while you are able, the evening is the best time, and don’t just give a light water as this is soon evaporated and a waste of water.

Give the ground a good soak so that the water sinks well into the ground.

This will do far more good and will last much longer before the need to water again.

You can purchase a special soaker hose made out of recycled rubber where the water seeps through the pipe walls.

If this is buried into the ground it keeps the moisture where you need it, down by the roots and off the foliage.

The soaker hose can be purchased by the metre, and so is very economic to buy and can then be attached to your tap with a piece of normal hose pipe.

Let’s hope we get some rain soon to freshen up the gardens.

Tauranga artist Jenny Coker is inviting people to do just this by attending her High Tea fundraiser for Waipuna Hospice on February 24.

A long-time loyal supporter of the charity, Jenny is planning a luxury afternoon situated in her gorgeous gardens, with stunning views across Tauranga Harbour.

Jenny has been donating her artwork to the charity for many years, and says it is a delight to support the community in such a way – an effort that has recently benefitted her personally.

“With my husband in poor health, we never know when we’re going to need these things, but the full circle is coming around again.

“With the garden looking so gorgeous, I thought this is the perfect venue to do something, bring people here to enjoy my garden and raise funds for the hospice – it’s a simple as that.”

While Jenny is organising and hosting the event, her niece Vicki, who has excelled in culinary classes, is responsible for the menu.

Vicki is pursuing a career as a pastry chef and will be creating dainty morsels and treats, including salmon and cucumber sandwiches, mini scones, tiny tarts and flans, macaroons, mini chocolate eclairs and truffles.

A variety of teas will also be available on offer, with a complimentary glass of bubbles too.

Observatory reveals Jupiter shining brightest in night sky Jupiter shining in the northwest is the brightest object in the night sky, aside from our moon.

The orange cast star, just above and to the right of it, is Aldebaran ‘the Eye of the Bull’.

To the left and down of Jupiter is a cluster of stars known by various names including: the Pleiades, Matariki, the Seven Sisters, and Subaru.

North of the zenith is Sirius ‘the Dog Star’; it’s the brightest true star in the night sky.

South of overhead is Canopus, the second brightest star.

Lying between Jupiter and Sirius is the constellation of Orion; the distinctive line of three stars makes up Orion’s Belt. The bright blue star above the belt is Rigel, and the reddish star below the belt is Betelgeuse.

Crux, the Southern Cross, is in the southeast. Below it are Beta and Alpha Centauri, often called ‘The Pointers’.

Alpha Centauri is the closest naked-eye star, 4.3 light years away.

The planet Saturn rises in the east around midnight at the end of the month. It is below and left of Spica, a star a little fainter than Saturn.

The TAS Observatory is located at the clubrooms in Fergusson Park, Matua.

Sideswiping councillors

In The Sun last week, Andrew van Dadelszen broadsided the current CEO of the BoP Regional Council (Mary-Anne MacLeod) and sideswiped the current councillor team along the way.

In politics, a personal attack is political. To suggest that the issues faced by almost every local government in the country are in any way special to a particular CEO at a particular time is nonsense.

Lambasting Local Government (LG) for struggling with its broad array of tasks is neither reasonable, nor fair. Beating up LG for failing to be efficient is pure rubbish, as the failing Auckland amalgamation experiment shows.

Removing some of those responsibilities should reduce costs (= lost jobs), but they need to be taken up elsewhere, and central government has

failed to explain how that will happen and be paid for. Worst case scenario is that yet another cost will be delegated to the environment for absorption.

Most importantly, regional councils have responsibility to maintain clean water, ensure that ecosystems continue functioning, save kai moana for the table, and give us forests and lakes to enjoy. If “efficiency” really means a reduced ability to achieve those outcomes, then we need to consider the future very carefully indeed before walking that path.

The BoP needs visionary leadership from a regional council aiming to deliver a healthy environment to future generations in the context of a sustainable economy now. What it does not need is aggressive politicking designed to alienate the very people employed to implement that vision.

Von Dadelszen comments shock I was shocked to read the comments you published, from Mr Von Dadelszen but I will let Regional Council management defend their excellent record, if they can be bothered. In short Von Dadelszen’s comments could be no further from the truth and has slandered Council management and its elected members.

The BOPRC is a top organisation and its Councillors have respect for each other, work well together and have achieved much, over the past two years.

Mr Von Dadelszen’s misrepresentation of the financial facts speaks volumes about his own abilities and his track record. I can only assume that Mr Von Dadelszen is either losing his mind or

worse, he is trying to undermine this effective organisation, to serve the aims and objectives of the National Party.

Make no mistake, the National Party’s intent is to do away with Regional Councils, They will asset strip them Nationally and ultimately degrade the environment further, to suit development, not the people. Our Community interest is doomed under the Key Government. However, I think even Key would be disturbed by Von Dadelszen’s vicious and inaccurate diatribe, as Government know that the BOPRC, is number one in local Government and the model for New Zealand. Andrew, this is not the way to get re-elected!

Wild driving in Matua

In St.John the Evangelist’s gospel Jesus kicks off his public ministry by first being baptised in the River Jordan by his cousin John the Baptist then attending the wedding feast at Cana. Both these events are the basis of the two immutable church sacraments, Baptism and Marriage.

Mainstream Christianity does not, as is now claimed by some more liberal pro-gay church ministers, see these two sacraments as being just legal adaptable formalities.

It is my opinion that a substantial majority of New Zealanders don’t think gay-marriage is okay and if this is the case a referendum is needed.The pro-gay marriage lobby, in my opinion, represent a substantial minority and the last thing they want is a referendum. Rather they are working on the now infamous Simon Bridges, Tony Ryall, National, Labour, Greens and Maori Party’s “Broad Cross Party Agreement” scam. This way gay marriage will become law just as Sue Bradford’s wildly unpopular anti-smacking bill did.

As NZ First list MP, Andrew Williams, formerly mayor of Auckland’s North Shore states in Wednesday NZ Herald: “The whole party felt that 121 MPs should not be making this decision of behalf of the whole country. NZ First thinks there should be a referendum and let the people decide.”

I base my assumption on the evidence as viewed on the streets of the above areas where thick black tyre marks in various shapes and circles have suddenly appeared over the past few weeks. Rogue reporting on tragedy There has been mention in some news outlets of a “rogue wave” causing the unfortunate tragedy at the northern harbour entrance this week.

I see that the intelligent media has not fallen into the trap, and services such as SunLive have not used the term. The “rogue” wave phrase is bandied around all too often.

Harbour entrances and bars, such as Bowentown, are treacherous places in the wrong conditions. At the time of this disaster, such conditions were obvious.

Large waves rising up out of seemingly nowhere; confused sea, near to low tide, meaning the sea swells would be rising and breaking randomly over the shallows at times.

Make all referendums that 90% of the public have asked for, binding on the Government of the day, e.g if 90% of the people want the death penalty for 1st degree murder or rape of women and children brought in, so be it. The Government must obey the will of the people. After all we elected you and part of your mandate should be to do our bidding.

2. Bring back compulsory military training for 18 year olds and allow the army to discipline as they used to.

No business bailing out TCC on Route K

If Transit ridiculed the Route K project at $32m, why would NZTA now provide the $60m take out having regard to the current circumstances and background?

NZTA must not go with this TCC strategy as ratepayers and taxpayers do not want the matter resolved in this way. NZTA must uphold National’s political pledge to complete Turret Road /15th Avenue four-laning/ Hairini Bridge/Welcome Bay underpass link-up.

Mailing cheque warning goes out to Bay of Plenty residents People who use gate-mail pick-up are being warned not to use the system to mail cheques.

Police are warning of a group allegedly targeting rural letterboxes with the flag up.

So far the alleged offenders are targeting letterboxes in the Thames area but a police spokesperson say they could move to other regions, including the Bay of Plenty.

“They simply look for letters addressed to entities such as IRD, which obviously contain cheques.

“They then ‘wash’ the cheque and make it out to cash or a ‘mule’ account.”

Police say the cheque is then presented to a bank.

“Recently, thousands of dollars has been defrauded

from letterboxes in the Eastern Waikato area. “Electronic banking may be a safer way to pay your bills.”

Bank staff are also being warned to call police immediately on 111 if they suspect anyone presenting a large value

cheque of having stolen it. “Keep the original cheque for fingerprinting purposes.

Try to avoid excess handling of the cheque by placing it in a bag as soon as possible.”

Mount man killed in Thailand

A Mount Maunganui yachtsman was killed in Thailand trying to avoid a collision with another vessel. Richard Spraggs, 59, hit his head when he fell off his yacht La Zingara in Chalong Bay, Phuket, on Friday, January 25.

Phuket News reported Richard was re-anchoring his boat around 5am after an overnight storm, which had pushed another boat too close to his.

He was trying to push the boats apart when he fell overboard and struck his head on the other boat. The alarm was raised by a friend from New Zealand who was on board the yacht.

Once police were notified, a search got underway and Richard’s body was found 30 minutes later. Phuket News says ambulance staff tried to resuscitate Richard, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Woman’s body found

Police are not treating as suspicious the death of a 77-year-old woman, whose body was found in Bowentown on Tuesday. The woman’s body was found at Anzac Bay about 2.20pm.

It’s reported the woman may have drowned but police were still investigating the cause of her death. St John Paramedics attempted CPR at the scene but all attempts were unsuccessful.

The matter has been referred to the coroner.

Rider’s death ‘not suspicious’

Police are not treating as suspicious the death of Anthony Paul Navin, who was killed while riding on Thompson’s Track on Monday.

The 32-year-old Waitoa dairy farmer’s body was found by family members lying next to his trail bike on the track in the Kaimai Range about 12km from Te Aroha around 1pm.

Road policing manager, Inspector Marcus Lynam, says it is now up to the Coroner to determine the cause of death.

“A post-mortem examination has indicated Mr Navin’s death was not suspicious and is not considered a road fatality.”

Cyclist and truck collide

A cyclist was injured when he was knocked off his bike by a truck near the flyover in Mount Maunganui on Tuesday.

The cyclist was riding along Maunganui Road when he and the truck collided about 400metres east of the flyover around 8.30am.

A reporter at the scene says St John Paramedics treated the injured man at the scene before taking him to Tauranga Hospital.

The driver of the truck involved in the accident, who did not want to be named, says the cyclist pulled out onto the road to move around a parked car.

“He pulled right into the path of the truck hitting the front left-hand corner of the truck.”

Boy recovers from crash

A 15-year-old Whakatane boy is recovering from a hip dislocation in the orthopaedic ward in Tauranga Hospital after he fell down a five metre high bank near Opotiki in the weekend.

The teenager dislocated his hip and had to be airlifted from the scene by the TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter around 1pm on Saturday.

Pilot Liam Brettkelly says because of the patient’s location it was thought the teen may have needed to be winched out, but the helicopter was able to land at the scene.

Car strike, head injuries

In a separate incident in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, a 12-year-old boy suffered head injuries after being hit by a car in Murupara on Saturday night.

He was airlifted to Waikato Hospital by the BayTrust Rescue Helicopter around 5.30pm.

Pilot Art Kowalski says he was treated by St John Paramedics at the scene before being flown to Waikato Hospital.

He remains in a stable condition in the Waikids ward at Waikato Hospital.

65) Reading about Broooooooce! It’s been a couple of good years to read musical biographies, what with Keith’s Life, and Phillip Norman’s slightly less interesting book on Mick. Now Peter Ames Carlin has released the first “authorised” biography of Springsteen in 25 years, simply entitled Bruce. That’s “authorised” as in the Boss consented to interviews and told his mates it was OK to talk.

It’s fascinating stuff, showing the absolutely driven nature of the man. And ruthlessness (there are still raw feelings about his breaking up the E Street Band). If you can’t afford to go to Sydney in March to catch the show, this is the next best thing.

66) The Coen brothers return to music! The last time cinematic mavericks the Coen brothers made a movie with a musical theme it started a worldwide bluegrass and Americana revival. Oh Brother Where Art Thou? kicked off a musical wave which brought, amongst others, Gillian Welch and Alison Krauss to the attention of music lovers everywhere. Krauss’s higher profile probably led Robert Plant to record the Grammy-winning (and really quite wonderful) Raising Sand album with her while Welch just continued to release occasional albums of complete brilliance.

Now the Coens are returning to music with Inside Llewyn Davis, a film set in the very early sixties (possibly late fifties) in New York’s Greenwich Village, birthplace of the folk revival which spawned many a singer songwriter including the now quite well known Bob Dylan. It’s based on the biography of Dave Van Ronk, The Mayor of MacDougal Street.

Like Oh Brother, the music has been produced by T Bone Burnett, this time in collaboration with Marcus Mumford of Mumford And Sons.

etc. So Chinese yum cha lunches are one of my favourites. It’s kinda the Eastern equivalent of tapas, with little dumplings and other treats – called dim sum - on offer for between $5 and $10 a plate. And the New Hong Kong Restaurant on Devonport Rd is now doing a rocking yum cha!

Even the most common of dim sum, the famous pork siu mai dumplings, have an added subtle smokiness (from the addition of umami-rich mushrooms I’m guessing) and they make a very good job of the very difficult xiao long bao - also called Shanghai steamed buns or pork and ginger dumplings, or any combination of those words! - often not seen on yum cha menus since they originate in Shanghai. They’re a very cool dumpling filled with a mixture of ginger pork and delicious liquid which if eaten incorrectly will either shoot everywhere or scald your mouth.

They are undoubtedly one of the world’s great foods and these renditions ain’t half bad.

68) The Jazz Festival à go-go! The programme for the 51 National Jazz Festival was launched last Friday. And, yes, there will be bands downtown, bands at the Historic Village, and the regularly fantastic Youth Band Competition. But the thing to check out is the Baycourt Concert Series. It’s all on-line now and there are programmes in shops and at Baycourt. All tickets are under $50 – remarkably good value for the quality of acts coming – and the full details can be found at www.jazz.org.nz.

69) All my favourite bands are reforming! Another day, another band from the seventies or eighties announces a reunion... This week it was the Boomtown Rats, Bob Geldof ’s old muckers, who will be getting together to play the Isle of Wight festival later this year.

But the best reunion of all for me is that of Graham Parker and The Rumour, who are doing it properly, not just for nostalgia. Their new album, Three Chords Good (after more than 25 years apart) is a collection of brand new songs and brilliant it is too, taking up where the boys left off, a little gentler and wiser but still burning with life. As Parker once wrote “Passion is no ordinary word”.

Fantastic

Dir: Rian Johnson - Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt Looper is a time travel movie, and like all clever time travel movies the less you know the more fun it is. And it really is fun. It’s that rare special beast – a sci-fi action thriller, smart, tough, and with real emotional weight.

The set-up goes something like this: Joe (Gordon-Levitt) is a “looper”. It is 2044. 30 years further into the future time travel exists and is illegal, though is used by the mob to send hit victims back to 2044 to be killed and disposed of by loopers. It’s a neat, if coldblooded, arrangement for Joe until his next target is his older self from the future (Willis).

Complications occur and spend the rest of the film multiplying.

Gordon-Levitt had an early movie lead in writer/director Johnson’s striking debut, Brick, and with a few prosthetic enhancements makes a good young Willis, and there are strong turns from Blunt and Jeff Daniels.

It really is a pleasure watching a film like this, so confident and accomplished. Like all time travel flicks it doesn’t pay to think too closely about the dynamics, but this is so well (and knowingly) done you won’t even care.

Grindhouse is still alive and well in the shape of The Baytown Outlaws a gleeful romp through a violent world of redneck killers, corrupt sheriffs, crazy bikers and psychotic drug dealers. From the lurid colour palette to the extravagant shoot-outs and clear revelling in eccentricities, this – surprisingly – doesn’t involve Tarantino, Rodriguez or Roth, but the influences are obvious. Not that it’s a bad thing, as the film’s concentration on retro confederate culture stands it apart as lacking in any social value – uncompromising B-movie silliness.

And it’s been a week of sequels for me, film franchises that stagger along, after all but ardent fans have lost interest and well after everyone’s lost track of how many have come and gone.

Despite the return of the series original stars, I was less than excited by the prospect of Universal Soldier: Day of . So far the innumerReckoning able forgettable sequels have only been dead ends. Things open brutally as a man (Scott Adkins) watches his wife and daughter killed in a home invasion – by none other than the Muscles from Brussels, Jean Claude Van Damme! So the guy wants revenge, has amnesia, and is attacked by a Super Soldier from a secret army led by Dolph Lundgren. But nothing is as it seems... It’s an impressively vicious thriller, different in tone from previous entries and perhaps even absurd enough to be destined for cult status, though Dolph and Jean Claude’s contributions are brief.

also sees a return, this Resident Evil Retribution time from original director Paul W S Anderson (or was he back last time as well? I forget). It’s more of exactly the same – extravagant visuals, zombies all over the place and a plot as confusing as it is simplistic. Milla Jovovich still fits the tight black leather and does the wire work with determination.

This will please fans of the video games since it runs, even more than previous efforts, exactly like a video game, with various “levels”, each with a different look and a “boss” to defeat. A very guilty pleasure, if that.

Hellraiser: Revelations , however, makes both of those efforts look good.

Since the first two films this franchise has been sinking with each instalment. This is the ninth and does nothing to redeem things. Even, Doug Bradley, famous for playing chief villain Pinhead, declined to return. Word is that the film was rushed through so The Weinstein Company wouldn’t lose the series rights. It involves a couple of miscreants who disappeared in Mexico (messing with things they shouldn’t have) then suddenly return to their family with the horrendous Cenobites and much death and destruction in their wake. Not a good situation, not a good film.

Audrey Hepburn painting earns Papamoa couple $1500 It seems the transition from painting animals to people has paid off for Papamoa artists Jos and Hilly Coufreur after Jos’s portrait of British actress Audrey Hepburn was chosen for a prominent art exhibition.

Jos’s painting was accepted to go on show at the Molly Morpeth Canaday art exhibition in Whakatane. The exhibition opened on January 26 and Jos’s painting has already sold for $1500.

The award offers a $10,000 cash prize to the winner and gives the chance for artists to showcase their works in a nine-week exhibition in Whakatane. The award is named after Molly Morpeth whose artworks are known to embrace expressionism.

Hilly says having Jos’s artwork chosen for the exhibition is quite a prestigious prize in itself.

“You send them (your paintings) up and then you don’t know if you’re even going to get shown. It’s the luck of the draw.”

Jos’s artwork was among those from 13 other Bay of Plenty artists, chosen from 74, accepted into the exhibition. More than 300 artists registered their work for the award.

Jos has been painting for 40 years and started off painting horse and dog portraits.

“Recently he’s been doing people portraits as well.

Then in October he completely changed his style and went really bright and bold.

“It’s quite a unique style and it seems to work with the classic sort of portraits like Audrey Hepburn.”

Jos placed second in the professional section of the Great Summer Art Exhibition at Snells Beach when the art exhibition first began, and has since entered an art piece every year.

Hilly, who has been painting for only a year, also won a merit award and has sold four of her pieces at the exhibition.

Selected works for the Molly Morpeth Canaday award will be on show until Sunday March 31 at the Te ko putu a te whanga a Toi Whakata ne Library and Exhibition Centre.

Crowds to watch out for Dyer on the straights Gavin Dyer is at the top of his game.

The local driver who is currently racing a Super Saloon is expected to draw from his experience at the South Pacific Super Saloon Championship at ASB Baypark this weekend. Gavin, a speedway driver for many years in various classes, has found himself winning a number of races in his “Pro-Ex” corvette and hopes Saturday’s race will be no different.

He is racing one of four locally built brands of chassis, engineered in a shop producing top speedway super saloon and saloon

cars for the New Zealand market. Following a disappointing result in his last race, Gavin says they have worked on his car and hope to welcome some high-flying results this weekend.

Speedway manager Roger Bailey says “Tauranga is boxing above its weight, with four saloon and super saloon chassis manufacturers in town”. The South Pacific Super Saloon Championship dates back to the old Baypark Speedway, which

Bay cadets training for the future Bay of Plenty Cadet Force cadets were out in force at the recent Tauranga A&P Show to prepare for their Canadian invasion.

They are the type of outdoors activities the cadet forces regularly get involved with. Other activities include leadership training, citizenship training, drill, first aid, power flying and gliding, firearms training and target shooting, adventure training and more.

Coastguard Waihi Beach president Murray Whitehead is still revelling over the coastguard’s new purpose-built rescue vessel, purchased through many fundraising endeavours.

Worth close to $700,000, the new vessel has a faster response capability and enhances crew comfort, which is important for strenuous rescue conditions, says Murray. “It’s got more of the latest technology and has better crew stations, which means we can carry more equipment on board. It’s just a lot safer.” He says the boat was proving itself particularly useful in a busy summer season which has seen 24 rescues since July. The 9.5 metre Naiad coastguard rescue vessel was built

by Alloy Cats in Mount Maunganui and replaces a Rayglass Protector which faithfully served the community for 15 years. Coastguard Waihi Beach is currently manned by 46 volunteers who dedicate more than 7000 hours annually to keeping the community safe on the water.

God’s Word – the measure of truth The apostle Paul writes in Romans 15:5-6 about God’s people living in such harmony with one another “that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ”.

Today we have many voices claiming to be the voice of the Church and claiming to be the Christian voice.

The reality is that not everyone in Christendom (the term covering everyone who claims to be Christian), is Christian and not every person claiming to speak on behalf of the Church, is a Christian. Jesus says in Matthew 7:21-23 that “not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven”.

For there to be so many confusing voices and so many contradictory positions on matters of life and faith,

the Bible has to be ignored, trivialised or ‘made-to-fit’! The Bible says of itself in 2 Timothy 3:16 that “all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness”. This means that all of Scripture is truth, that all of Scripture is inspired and that God’s Word stands today as His blueprint for life and living.

To take another position is to deny the authority of Scripture. To take a position that God’s Word is not relevant for today and that “we” need to rewrite Scripture to fit the twenty-first century is to place our knowledge and our wisdom in a place that is greater than the wisdom and knowledge of God, when God says in Isaiah 55:9 that “as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts”. God has perfect knowledge and perfect wisdom concerning all things – past, present and future. To

The Slow Bible movement: Part one of three

You might have heard of Slow Food or The Slow Food Movement.

It advocates for regional produce, organically grown food, food prepared with care and nutritious food.

It’s a contrast to fast food such as takeaways and microwave meals; meals which are obviously not always the healthiest option. In a culture often obsessed with fast (food),ultrafast (broadband), and even instant (noodles); slow goes against the grain. We even seem to be obsessed with speed when it comes to reading the Bible.

Bible-in-a-year plans encourage us that in just 3.2 chapters a day we can read our way through the whole Bible in 365 days.

That’s a pretty quick when you consider you’re attempting to read, contextualize, comprehend, and apply to 21st Century life an historic document that is 2000 + years old and originally written in Hebrew and Greek.

Notwithstanding if you get a couple of days or weeks behind you’re going to be reading like crazy to catch up!

I’d encourage you to embrace ‘slow’ Bible reading, especially when we remember that the goal is ‘Bible living’ not simply ‘Bible reading’.

The Bible contains the big story of God at work in our world. In this big story it is possible to make sense of humanity’s story, of this mysterious and beautiful world we live in, and of our own individual stories and experiences. The Bible, as God’s Word invites, inspires and challenges us to re-orientate the whole way we live.

It frees us from our own small worlds and the ruts we get ourselves into. It invites us to be lost and found in God’s great love story.

Viewed like this, reading

the Bible is an enticing proposition and potentially life changing experience.

It’s not always an easy book however.

Filled with genealogies, enigmatic poetry, quirky stories and letters written to particular people in a particular time and context far removed from our own 21st Century postmodern world; it’s a grand-narrative to be worked through slowly rather than in a fast, great rush.

A qualitative reading of comprehension and application will be a hands down healthier approach than a quantitative reading of a quickly consumed daily word count.

God’s Word and His Word alone is truth. His Word is forever settled in heaven. His Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Be certain then to measure all things against the standard that is God’s Word!

Happy birthday Honey A new mural is gracing the streets of Papamoa marking the birthday of a local’s beloved dog.

Aerosol artist Graham Hoete, otherwise known as Mr G, has created his latest work of public art in the Western Bay of Plenty with a portrait of his dog Honey, as a gift on her second birthday.
