Life, work and chicken doodoo Welfare reforms kicked in this week and there are some well overdue requirements for those out of work, to actively seek it – and some expectations for sole parents and their children.

Fluoride bubbling up

The fluoride debate is rising up like a giant deja vu moment.

At the risk of sounding like an old fart, I remember when, as editor of the good old Bay Sun back in the eighties, the ‘fluoride in our water’ bunfight raged.

It has smouldered away in the background and never been snuffed out.

It’s a great concept. The supposed downsides, not proven, are outweighed by enormous advantages – especially for those least capable of making good choices for their offspring.

Yet I feel a little uneasy with the idea of mass medication.

Here’s an idea: install optional fluoride-additive water fountains at pre-schools and primary schools so

children, the main targets of this concept, can opt for either fluoride-enhanced water, or rotten teeth.

High standards

One of the useless pieces of information sent from my darling wife’s web meanderings, was this headline: “Snake hiding in toilet bites man’s penis.”

How exactly my beloved thought this would make any item of interest in this column is beyond me. We have standards here at RR. There are two specific words that, for the sake of decency and class, we avoid at all costs: ‘snake’ and ‘bites’.

I know you thought ‘toilet’ and ‘penis’ would be a problem. But obviously, in the case of a snake hiding in a toilet and biting a penis, those words are perfectly acceptable.

Not funny

Snakes are the only things worse than the alternative, the Act Party. Sorry, just a joke, you know we meant the Greens (or was that the Pakeha Party?)

We normally also avoid all toilet humour and also anything involving a penis. In fact I think this is the first time in 13 years this column has used the P-word.

I could be wrong, to the best of our knowledge penis has never arisen, so to speak, in this column.

Parting thought

There’s been a lot of discussion about the pending arrival of the royal baby and speculation about the sex.

We can reveal here today, in a world first, the answer: Yes, it was definitely the result of sex.

Boaties behaving Patrol crews are yet to report any bad behaviour by boaties in the region this winter, says Western Bay of Plenty harbour master Jennifer Roberts.

The season’s so far golden record follows a summer with fewer problems of any sort on the water and a general increase in water safety during the last five years.

“Over the winter we have had the patrol boat out intermittently, which we haven’t tried before. The patrol crew haven’t reported any bad behaviour by boaties.”

Jennifer believes boaties’ improved behaviour is due to an increased patrol presence and more education by volunteer harbour wardens – such as Frank and Pat Bullen.

The husband and wife combined have almost 80 years’ experience as harbour wardens under their belts, and agree with Jennifer that water safety has never looked so good in the Western Bay. “We’ve seen many people come and go during our time as wardens, and can happily say we think there has been a significant increase in the level of awareness around water safety, especially in the last five years or so.”

The Bullens have seen big changes in their time promoting water safety. “There are a lot more families

out on the water now,” says Pat. “You used to just see men going out to catch some fish to feed their family, but it’s about a lot more than that now.

“More people have access to boats and more often than not it is families we see going out.”

Frank especially credits families for their increased use of life jackets.

“They’re really getting into the life jackets, in particular where a whole family goes out, you see all the kids with their life jackets on, you even see dogs with life jackets on.”

While Frank believes there are no stand-out safety issues remaining, Jennifer still wishes to push the message about obeying the five knot rule.

“Boaties need to remember not to exceed five knots when within 50 metres of another boat or person in the water; or when within 200 metres of the shore or a boat flying the dive flag.”

Greenpeace’s hot Bridges billboard As a boy from Tauranga, MP Simon Bridges has always wanted his name up in lights – and now he has his wish.

The Energy Minister is the subject of Greenpeace’s new 300sqm billboard on the corner of Manners and Cuba Street in Wellington featuring the slogan “Simon Bridges Pants on Fire”.

It is accusing the minister of misleading Parliament over a meeting he had with oil company Shell about a controversial Crown Minerals Bill amendment covering deep-sea oil protests.

Greenpeace says Simon denied in Parliament having contact with oil companies over the bill amendment that was rushed through Parliament without public consultation. But it then emerged that he had met Shell just weeks before announcing the amendment, say Greenpeace.

Wanted lawyer skips country

A former Tauranga lawyer with a warrant for her arrest on drink driving charges has skipped the country to Australia, say police.

Michaela Milner, 32, failed to appear in court on Monday to face charges of drink driving, dangerous driving and failing to provide a blood specimen to police.

Sergeant Wayne Hunter says enquiries have revealed she left New Zealand on July 5, headed for Australia.

According to police, Milner, who resigned her position with Tauranga law firm Lyon, O’Neale and Arnold last week, was arrested on May 29 after being spotted driving erratically at speeds of around 90km/h down Cameron Rd.

Swan killing accused named

The man accused of running down black swans on Tauranga Harbour on Boxing Day can be named for the first time.

Carl Williams, from Katikati, was due to appear in Tauranga District Court on Tuesday charged with ill-treatment/cruelty to an animal, being black swans, under the Animal Welfare Act. He was granted interim name suppression by Community Magistrate Sue Howell during a court appearance on June 20. That suppression lapsed this week.

Williams was charged after a joint investigation by the SPCA and Fish & Game New Zealand into the alleged slaughter of black swans on the harbour caught on video.

Couple gift farm to nation

An extensive dry stock and forestry farm in the Papamoa Hills is in the process of being gifted to the nation by its owners to ensure it remains a green belt on the city fringes.

David and Cloie Blackley couldn’t bear the thought of their 180ha Summerhill Farm being subdivided for lifestyle blocks or housing, so they are arranging to gift it to the people of New Zealand.

Dog seized after 4-year-old bitten

The dog that attacked a four-year-old boy leaving the child with facial injuries has been seized following an investigation.

Around midday last Friday the boy was allegedly bitten by a bull mastiff dog while at the Merivale home of the dog’s owners.

The pre-schooler was taken to Tauranga Hospital and later flown to Waikato Hospital by the TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter around 3.30pm, where he received specialist care.

Tauranga City Council animal services team leader, Brent Lincoln, says the dog has been impounded and further inquiries are being made.

Every day John goes to work unsure whether he will be called a faggot or told to get a real job. They are two of the most common insults he is given as a parking officer.

“You get used to them,” says John (not his real name) about the insults. “It’s the ones that you’re not expecting that get you.

If you take it to heart it’s not the job for you.”

Following Hamilton City Council’s decision that parking officers should wear shoulder-mounted cameras, and changes to parking rules in Tauranga CBD, The Weekend Sun took to the street with one of the council’s six parking officers to see how they fare here.

John, who has been working as a parking officer for two years, expected a certain

amount of abuse when he started but was surprised by just how vitriolic it is.

“It did shock me to start with. I knew it would be a challenging job but I didn’t expect it be as bad as it was.”

These days he is more immune to the verbal abuse, and while he has been worried about his own safety about five times, he has never been assaulted.

“I’ve only had handful of times when I have been really concerned for my safety with people threatening violence. Whenever it feels like it could get out of hand I just walk away,” Council parking team leader Kevin Nally says a record of minor incidents against parking officers – such as being shouted at, spat at, sworn at and insulted – is not kept.

“Unfortunately, this is often an everyday reality for parking officers,” says Kevin.

He says the council see how Hamilton

There have been five physical assaults on officers during the last six years, two of which have resulted in criminal convictions.

John says the frequency of abuse varies – sometimes going weeks without any issues – then having a handful of verbal attacks within a week.

From what he’s heard, John believes the incidence of abuse is lower than Auckland or Hamilton – something he puts down to the more relaxed feel and greater proportion of old people here.

John is unsure whether Tauranga should follow Hamilton and approve officers to wear cameras to deter abuse and attacks.

While he believes it will deter some people from abusing officers, he questions if the extent of the problem warranted it here.

Tickets winning over fines Exceeding time limits remain Tauranga City Council’s biggest earner when it comes to parking fines, a breakdown of the figures reveals.

During the 2012-13 financial year the city issued 17,255 parking tickets, against 10,072

for traffic offences, which included 8121 for no registration, and 1951 for no current Warrant of Fitness.

There were 2879 tickets issued for illegal parking: such as parking on broken yellow lines, or footpaths.

The bulk of the city’s $1,414,542 income came from parking fines.

The income from traffic offences counts for a smaller percentage, with the government taking the major proportion.

The figure compares with $1,343,305 collected in parking fines for the financial year that ended on 30 June 2012, and with $1,422,871 collected for the financial year that ended on 30 June 2011.

Most of the parking tickets and infringement notices were issued in CBD (18,549). There were 2925 in the Downtown Mount and 1041 in Greerton Village. A further 7691 were issued across the rest of the city.

Pushing to the limit

Roll back the clock to 2009 and Papamoa endurance athlete Luana Mason would not have believed she would be competing at the Ironman World Champs within four years.

Luana, who now trains 25 hours a week between cycling, running and swimming sessions, laughs now remembering her first event – the introductory Bendon Woman’s Triathlon in 2009 with its 3km run, 10km cycle and 400m swim.

The occupational therapy assistant soon had the bug and was stepping up to bigger and longer events. Within two years she had qualified for the ITU World long-distance championships in Nevada, where she finished 13th.

“I was really happy. It was my first overseas race. It was pretty scary initially but I loved the whole experience representing my country, wearing the silver fern – that was a real buzz for me,” says Luana.

“I’d heard about the Ironman world champs in Kona.

It’s pretty much the holy grail of endurance racing and triathlon, so I thought wouldn’t that be great to go.”

Luana recently finished second for her age group at the Cairns Ironman, qualifying her for the world’s event in Hawaii in October.

Looking back to the Cairns event, which she finished in 10 hours 53 minutes, she says she was determined to make the cut for the world champs in Kailua Kona, Hawaii, and dug deep to give it everything.

Luana says training for an endurance event makes you want to spring out of bed at 5am “It’s all about that sense of self-satisfaction you have when you cross the finish line knowing that you have achieved something huge. It’s overcoming the odds over that long day, especially when that long day goes well for you.

With so many variables anything can go wrong, but if things go right it’s something that’s quite indescribable.”

Cotters’ long love Mavis Cotter had always said she would never marry a farmer or a Catholic.

Brian Cotter looks at his wedding photo from July 25, 1953.

I’ve watched our kids grow up and be successful. We were determined our family would have a good education, and they thrived.”

Poor health saw Mavis move permanently into Malyon House rest home in January, while Brian still resides in their home at Mount Maunganui.

He says they’ve fought as much as any other couple, and stuck to the traditional gender roles of that era, but were always supportive of one another.

“Mavis has always backed me in everything that I’ve done. We had differences of opinion, on the political scale mostly.

“I was the hunter and gatherer, and she’d always done the cooking and housework, I helped out, as much as men did – but that was the era.”

The couple will celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary, and Mavis’ birthday, with friends and family at Bayswater Village on Saturday, July 27 from 2-5pm.

But on July 25, 1953, she donned a white dress, walked down the aisle and said ‘I do’ to Brian Cotter – a farmer and a Catholic.

And according to Brian, now 83, it’s the small things, such as putting the toilet lid down, that helped the pair reach 60 years of marriage – which they will celebrate with family next weekend.

His 86-year-old wife’s self-proclaimed toy boy, Brian first locked eyes with Mavis on the softball field in early 1952.

“It took me about three months to ask for a date.”

After a short dating period, Brian organised a secluded evening visit to Fred Hall the jeweler, where a ring was purchased and preparations for a typical “farming date” wedding began.

Sixty years, five children, 10 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and hundreds of bacon and egg breakfasts later, Brian and Mavis are still in love.

“It’s a long time; I’ve enjoyed it a lot.

Katikati scissor hands The theft of Katikati Heritage Museum’s ride-on lawnmower has its management team calling on community to help with a donation of a replacement.

Paula says it was frustrating that the ride-on was, in their minds, in a secure place – out of sight in a shed behind a six foot wooden fence and gate, with on-premise security. But the claim was rejected because the shed was not padlocked.

“If anyone has a spare ride-on mower and are kind enough to offer it to us we would be very appreciative. At the moment we are relying on people lending us mowers.”

Meanwhile, the café at the communityowned museum has been revamped and is working closely with local suppliers to promote their gourmet produce with a Katikati cuisine platter. By Hamish Carter

Katikati Heritage Museum manager Paula Gaelic wants to hear from anyone with a spare mower, saying after their insurance claim was denied they did not want to have to resort to trimming the lawns with scissors.

“We have struggled to make ends meet and we simply can’t afford to buy a rideon. It’s just really disappointing that they won’t pay the claim. It’s just not fair.”

History visited as station opens As a single man in 1957, Gordon Woodcock was transferred to Tauranga from Auckland one year into his time with the New Zealand Police Force.

He lived in one of the cells, at the original station on Monmouth St, which was converted into a bedroom with a bed, wardrobe, a zip hot water heater and an oven – next to the three other cells which housed criminals.

“Back then, a single man was required to live on station in Tauranga to answer any calls that came in overnight.”

Hotel project developments The long struggle to find a developer prepared to build a hotel on the carpark building opposite Baycourt could soon be over.

Tainui Group Holdings took its thoughts on a joint venture Tauranga hotel development to its board on Tuesday, but any decision will not be made public immediately, says chief executive Mike Pohio.

“This is something that is a major development, and it requires due care attention and integrity in terms of process,’ says Mike.

“We are accountable to our board and we are accountable to the relationship we have with Tauranga City Council, so on that basis there’s no comment we can, or will, make without having that necessary exchange directly with the council.”

It is the second time TGH has been involved in TCC’s efforts to build a central city hotel on the Durham St

site. The global financial crisis put a stop to the first look five years ago.

TGH again became involved after council called for expressions of interest from hotel-linked developers after ending a relationship with another prospective developer.

TGH won preferred status to progress to a feasibility study for the development last year.

The proposal has reached the point of detailed design, but shareholdings and ownership of the land have yet to be finalised. The proposal under consideration is whether TGH develop a $40million 4.5/five star rated hotel in Durham St under the Novotel brand in association with the Accor hotel group and Tauranga City Council.

TGH has interests in Hamilton central city hotels Novotel Tainui and Ibis Tainui, and Novotel Tainui at Auckland Airport.

If the Tauranga hotel on the carpark site goes ahead, it could be completed by the end of 2015.

In an effort to boost dwindling volunteer firefighter numbers the Tauranga and Mount Maunganui volunteer crews are giving people a chance to don the uniform and get a taste for volunteering on the frontline.

Feel your heart race as you rescue your 97kg casualty in the challenge’s dummy run. Put your fitness to the test in the sledgehammer hit test, take on the hose reel challenge or race 50m with a 20 litre drum.

Tauranga Senior firefighter Jeff Francis says poor results from previous recruitment drives giving out pamphlets about the volunteer service has prompted them to take a more active approach.

“This time around we have come up with something different to convince them to get a feel for it.

It’s a physical thing to get them involved and have a bit of fun, have a crack at it and see if they enjoy it, and then we can take it further.”

Jeff says the Tauranga crew is supposed to have at least 22 members on its books, but numbers have fallen to 16. While they have a strong core with at least six years’ experience, they are struggling to attract and retain newcomers.

The volunteer crews play a critical role in the Western Bay, backing up the paid firefighters stationed in Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Greerton.

After 13 year Jeff still loves the chance it offers to give back to the community, the new skills he has learned and great friends he’s made. But don’t take his word for it – try it out for size.

Iris’ speedy recovery takes to the road After many years contributing to the community, Tauranga identities Bruce Trask and Iris Thomas are taking a well-earned rest hitting the road for a relaxing tour of New Zealand in a house bus.

While Bruce is well-known for his zero waste school education programmes, Iris is the founder of awardwinning bike safety programme ‘Kids Can Ride’ and has organised many breast cancer walks in Tauranga.

On May 1 Iris suffered a brain aneurysm and after spending weeks in hospital she was discharged back to her home in Judea where Bruce cared for her 24 hours a day.

Iris wants to thank Bruce for his support and to show her appreciation the couple are planning to tour the country in a house bus – starting with the North Island. “You re-evaluate your life when you come so near to losing it and you decide perhaps after the continual grind of working, working, working, maybe it’s time to have a break and rest,� says Iris. “We’re not going to go away until it gets a bit warmer but we’ll try the odd weekend away to see how it all works.�

Iris was initially told she would not be able to work for at least a year but she is so far making good recovery.

Despite not being allowed to drive, work or run, Iris is back to living life to its fullest – except at a slower pace. “Surprisingly I’ve taken it better than I ever thought I would because it’s completely the opposite lifestyle to what I’m used to, having to move so slowly and having so many restrictions. In conjunction with the campus, which hosts several Christian educational institutions, turning 25 Tauranga author Jeanette Knudsen has written ‘Great Futures – 25 Years of Christian Education in Bethlehem’.

The book, launched at birthday celebrations on July 6, holds 416 pages of memories – from the school first opening as a “run down dairy farm” to a campus encompassing several Christian educational institutions.

“There’s quite an emphasis on the early years because they’re what I call ‘the miracle years’,” says Jeanette.

“In those days, it [the campus] seemed as if it was way out of the city. But of course, 25 years later the city is at our door step.”

Jeanette began working at Bethlehem College in 1989 as the promotional officer – a role she held for more than 20 years – building up an archive of events now recorded in her book.

Jeanette began writing after retiring in 2010.

Designed by Tauranga printing company ‘Think Marketing’, the book features black and white photographs of the first day at school and up-to-date pictures of the campus today – including the newly renovated chapel.

“It’s a good keepsake of the years at the campus.”

The book costs $25 and is available from the campus. Jeanette hopes it will soon be available in book stores.

Happy Hairy birthday Bay of Plenty children’s literature association Bookrapt celebrates its 30th birthday this month and, to honour the occasion, Dame Lynley Dodd is the guest speaker at this year’s annual seminar.

Lynley was one of Bookrapt’s founding members in 1983 and spoke at the first meeting. Since then, the annual seminars have become increasingly popular, selling out each year.

Past speakers include nationally and internationally acclaimed authors Sherryl Jordan, Susan Brocker, Brian Falkner, Gavin Bishop, and Ken Catran.

This year Lynley is joined by Maria Gill and Chris Gurney.

By Wednesday this week, Tauranga City Council had received 22 applications but staff expect more before today’s 5pm deadline.

The fund, set up by the Rena charterers, aims to help Bay of Plenty residents cover costs incurred in dealing with the shipwreck on the Astrolabe Reef on October 5, 2011.

The fund will also assist with cleaning up Bay waters and coastlines to reduce the negative effects of the grounding, including the spilling of oil and debris from the vessel.

It’s also available for local iwi who suffered as a result of the pollution of the coastline and, at their own expense, fed and housed many of the clean-up and wildlife care volunteers, as well as local tourism-related businesses and affected volunteers.

The fund is shared equally between Western Bay of Plenty District Council and Tauranga City Council and is managed by a distribution committee chaired by Sir Peter Trapski, who would not comment on applications made prior to the deadline. Committee members include TCC Mayor Stuart Crosby, Western Bay of Plenty Mayor Ross Patterson, Bay of Plenty Regional Council chairman John Cronin and iwi representative Te Awanui Black. Rachel’s striking success proves enough Rachel Yardley has been selected for the New Zealand Senior Women’s Volleyball Team.

After a four year wait one can forgive Rachel Yardley for pinching herself after breaking through into the elite ranks of New Zealand women’s volleyball.

The 21-year-old, recently returning to Tauranga following her studies, has been named in the New Zealand Senior Women’s Volleyball Team travelling to the World Championships Qualification Tournament in China this September. And it still came as a shock.

“It was something I always wanted to do and I didn’t know if it was going to happen.”

In what is a dream come true, the former Otumoetai College player joins two other Bay of Plenty players in the team – team mates Lisa Claasens and Whakatane’s Kim Wiersma. A former NZ under-19 representative, Rachel has waited patiently for four years to earn her stripes in the senior side.

“I got a taste of international competition in Melbourne in 2009, but it is a huge thrill to be selected for the world champs qualifiers,” says Rachel.

At present it is the off-season in New Zealand while the side’s Northern Hemisphere opponents

are mid-season, something which could be seen as a disadvantage for the Kiwis.

“We’ll be competing against fully professional players. We are not expecting any miracles, as it will be more a good experience to go to these things.

“We’ll get a few training camps in Auckland before heading to China, and there is a week of training scheduled there before the one-week tournament starts.”

Rachel admits to not having much of a life outside of volleyball and her work at Tauranga Vets on 9th Ave/Cameron Rd. She graduated from Otago Polytechnic with a Certificate in Veterinary Nursing and is now studying for a diploma.

Following her sister Nicole into the sport at Otumoetai College, she credits her achievements to her initial coach Stu Henderson, who still coaches her at her Tauranga club.

“I’m not tall at 1.68m, but Stu has helped me become a specialist libero defender. Playing for New Zealand is a dream come true.”

The host city and dates for the championships have yet to be confirmed by the Asian Volleyball

Student whips up record batch of success From helping her mum plait bread as a girl, trainee chef Caroline Ruggle has proven she’s come a long way with her record breaking win at the Waikato Culinary Fare. After training as a cook for less than five months, the 18-yearold Bay of Plenty Polytechnic student surprised herself when she scooped the pool at the recent fare – claiming two gold medals and winning the overall award after setting a record score of 96 out 100 for her inspired dessert.

“It was my first competition so I certainly wasn’t expecting to win it overall. I thought I might have a shot at silver or a bronze (for

It was a complete surprise.” Caroline says he has learned “a few things” from her mother and grandmother, but her success winning gold medals for her cold dessert and trio of salmon entrée (salmon tartar, smoked salmon and beetroot and vodka

cured salmon) is a major boost.

The dessert was a chocolate panna cotta with black berry jellies, chocolate and sable biscuit crumb on a blackberry coulis garnished with spun sugar and popping candy. The ideas came from blending concepts she’s seen in magazines and Caroline’s delighted they worked so well.

Caroline dreams of becoming a top chef and cook in restaurants around the world. She is among a team of eight from the polytechnic who returned from the Hamilton event with four golds, four silvers and a bronze.

Canines sticking together for the better Don’t you just love a happy ending?

These Newshounds sure do, and this week we had some tail-wagging good news about my poodle-pal Lulu.

On Wednesday last week we received a concerning call from detective senior sergeant Greg Turner, who informed us of Lulu’s disappearance from her Valley Road home on Sunday, July 7.

Owned by the lovely Leona Smith, who does awesome work for the Tauranga Police CIB Charity Trust, Lulu had been spotted on Maunganui Rd on Monday, but hadn’t been seen since.

We got our SunLive reporters on the case and a story was online in a jiffy.

This week we learned Lulu had been found, safe and sound, all thanks to our article.

Greg gave us a call and gladly announced they were able to return Lulu to Leona after the awesome folk at Barkes Corner Vets saw her on SunLive.

In other news, while perusing Facebone last week, we noticed some concerning trends

emerging in the art scene.

Former Tauranga resident Caelyn, a successful artist now living in Colorado, is perfecting her style of dog drawing. This is not like Mr G’s famous portraits.

Caelyn’s special art technique involves actually drawing ON dogs.

As the photos show, her dog Milo is the first to have been creatively decorated.

We’re keeping an eye out for other sorts of four-legged pet art and expect Dalmations will be the next target, to become victims of ‘join the dots’ games.

Around the outside of the artwork we need a frame drawn, this is a great job for Border collies.

Jason Blair says National appears to have shown disregard to animal welfare on this matter.

“At a time when other countries around the world, including the United Kingdom, are taking action to ban testing on animals for cosmetics and the like, New Zealand passes legislation to allow testing on animals to test the safety of a recreational substance.”

The ban was voted down earlier this month, with Associate Health Minister Todd McClay saying a degree of animal testing would be required to guarantee party pills and synthetic cannabis were low risk.

The minister introduced amendments to the Psychoactive Substances Bill which would prevent drug makers experimenting on animals if there were alternatives that would prove the drugs could be approved for sale.

Jason says the Psychoactive Substances Bill is one of the first in the world to deal with control and regulation of synthetic cannabis.

“The acceptance of Mojo Mather’s amendment could have had a positive outcome for laboratory animals worldwide.

“The Animal Welfare Act offers some limited protection for laboratory test animals but there is no doubt Parliament’s voting will directly result in more animals suffering severe pain and distress.”

He says this is a significant backward step for a country which prides itself on animal welfare standards.

Helping hands in the Pacific Pacific Island schools are being given a technology boost thanks to a long-standing tradition from the Katikati Rotary Club and Ballance Agri-Nutrients.

Since 2007, Katikati Rotarians have been refurbishing and delivering the computers to primary and secondary schools throughout Samoa, Vanuatu, Tonga and the Cook Islands as part of their ‘Computers for the Pacific’.

In conjunction with Rotary, Ballance Agri-Nutrients has jumped on-board supplying the initiative with older model laptops, helping assist students with their learning.

As Ballance employees are handed upgraded computers, better equipping them to assist farmers around the country, their used laptops are being put to good use across the Pacific.

So far three of the laptops donated by Ballance have been loaded with Windows 7 and sent to Araura College on Aitutaki Island in the Cook Islands, with four more delivered to Ekonak Central School in Vanuatu.

Katikati Rotary representative John Buchanan explains the concept was established after Mount Maunganui Rotary Club built a special needs classroom at Tutaga Primary School in Savai’i Island, Samoa, in 2006.

“It was then we discovered none of the local schools had computers, so Katikati Rotary took up the challenge of co-ordinating the donation and refurbishing of the laptops – and ‘Computers for the Pacific Islands’ was born.”

With the support of Ballance, Rotary is getting close to reaching their goal of delivering 150 computers this year.

Wobbly but loveable Delightful little Liquorice is a ‘special needs kitten’, brought into ARRC as a three-week-old starving stray.

Sadly, within a week of his rescue he became ill with the deadly disease panleukopenia, or cat parvo-virus.

Amazingly, Liquorice survived the disease but has been left a little handicapped, with wobbly hind legs.

Mallets out for mid-winter Traditionally a summer sport, Tauranga Croquet Club is going against the grain and holding a mid-winter tournament this weekend.

The Tauranga Festival of Performing Arts got off to a great start at Baycourt this week. More than 600 competitors from around the North Island are strutting their stuff.

Forget about cucumber sandwiches, glasses of Pimm’s and good-old-fashioned standard croquet association rules, the Tauranga club has thrown its support behind a new generation of the game – croquet golf – which members are backing as the new tradition.

The tournament is attracting singles and pairs from throughout the Bay of Plenty and as far as Auckland and Whangamata, for what president Dave Andrews is picking will be some exciting games for players and spectators.

The festival will culminate in a “best of the best” concert at Baycourt on Sunday from 3pm.

Katikati’s Steptoe steps into future Katikati Lions’ annual Steptoe Auction is spicing it up this month with a monster garage sale to speed things up and minimise the long wait for items to come up for sale.

Organiser Don Moffat says a crowded cross-section of Katikati’s community traditionally wait for hours for a favourite item to come up for auction – but this year sales will be quick.

“We’re doing things a little differently. Traditionally, we’ve auctioned everything which

Imagine seeing your children for the first time after being blind for 23 years. It sounds like a miracle, but for the Taurangabased Marine Reach medical mission it has become almost commonplace while serving the Pacific Islands Medical outreach national director Michael Mears, who runs the operation in Tauranga, saw the impact the medical support makes on remote Pacific islands when he worked on-board the M/V Pacific Link with his wife Jeannie for five years.

“You have some pretty dramatic stories about people who have been blind for 25 years and then they get their sight back when we remove their cataracts. It’s pretty amazing,” says Michael.

On Saturday, Marine Reach’s latest humanitarian aid ship the M/V Pacific Hope, which replaces the

M/V Pacific Link, will arrive at Mount Maunganui’s Rata St wharf on its maiden voyage.

A formal welcome ceremony by Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby and kaumatua is scheduled for 10am, then the ship will be open for free public tours from 11am-1.30pm, 2-4pm and on Sunday from 1-3pm.

Marine Reach was founded by Tauranga Christian missionaries David and Linda Cowie in 1990, after seeing the need for medical support in the Pacific’s remote islands. The mission now runs three ships providing free dental, medical and opthalmology services.

“The benefit to the remote islands is huge. Most of the people wouldn’t be able to afford these medical services if they could get to them.”

Medical staff and crew from around the world volunteer their time on short tours of duty to provide the care.

Hysteria heads to world stage

A group of Bay of Plenty dancers are enlisting the public’s help to get them onto the world stage next month.

Tauranga’s Urban Dance crew ‘Hysteria’, consisting of seven dancers aged 10-13, will be the first junior crew from the region to perform on the biggest stage in Las Vegas when they represent New Zealand at the World Championship Hip Hop Dance Championships in August.

Presented by Hip Hop International, which coproduces the hit American dance series America’s Best Dance Crew with American Idol judge Randy Jackson, the World Hip Hop Dance battles brings together more than 1000 competitors from 40 countries.

Hysteria was crowned national champions for the junior age division in April, earning a place on the world stage.

Ethan Hika, 12, says the opportunity is a dream come true. “It’s something I hoped would happen…one day.”

Urban Dance director and choreographer Sarah Martin has been taking the crew for regular trainings and says the children are ‘beasts’ in the studio.

“The kids are obviously very excited but they are very focused and understand the hard work needed to achieve their goal of medalling at this competition.”

On Saturday Hysteria is hosting a fundraising concert at The Orchard Church in Te Puke to fundraise for the trip.

Doors open 6pm and the show begins 6.30pm. Tickets, available at the door, cost $12 or $40 for a family.

Prepping programme proving successful Sam Wenborn gives it 100 per cent when climbing a six foot wall in her Police Physical competency test.

Fancy a career in law enforcement? Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is running a programme designed to prepare students and equip them with the skills to enter the industry.

The Certificate in Preparation for Law Enforcement is a full-time programme running for 12 weeks, three times a year and is supported by New Zealand Police.

In its 13th year, the programme has successfully prepared hundreds of students for work in the police force, army and navy, and security industry.

There are still some places left on the next course beginning September 2.

Programme coordinator Sam Honey teaches the course and says it’s a great way for interested students to try out the industry, see if they have what it takes and if it’s really what they want to commit themselves to.

The last chance for free flu immunisation People eligible for the free flu vaccination are urged to get it as soon as possible and before the campaign ends on July 31.

“We’ve had a record-breaking season with around 1.24 million people already vaccinated this year,” says Dr Lance Jennings, a virologist and spokesperson for the National Influenza Specialist Group.

“Many vulnerable people are, however, still unprotected, and this is a concern as we head into flu season.

Influenza cases traditionally begin to

rise sharply at this time of year and it can take up to two weeks to develop protection after vaccination.”

Influenza vaccinations are free from a doctor or nurse for New Zealanders until the end of July if you are: aged 65 and over; under 65 (including children) with a long-term health condition such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease (including asthma), kidney disease and most cancers; pregnant; children aged six months to five years who have been hospitalised for respiratory illness or have a history of significant respiratory illness.

As a nutritional medicine practitioner I regularly give advice to people with osteoarthritis on the diet, lifestyle and supplements to help improve mobility and reduce pain.

It may surprise you that there are many foods in our typical diets that worsen osteoarthritis (OA). Likewise there are many foods and supplements that really help.

The key is to implement as many of these as possible to get the best results.

We start by removing foods that can cause inflammation of the joint, with John Arts especially saturated fats and vegetable oils high in omega 6.

Some foods cause irritation to joints, including acidic fruits and vegetables such as citrus and tomatoes.

I would start with a one month citrus elimination, including all citrus based juices.

If this does not help I would then try an elimination of the nightshade group including tomatoes, peppers and potatoes. These foods contain alkaloids that can interfere with cartilage formation and repair.

The best diet for OA is lots of vegetables, some low acid fruit, moderate wholegrain carbohydrates, good fats and lots of fish.

For example, use wholegrain oats for porridge and limit fruit to 1 or 2 pieces daily.

Pears, apples, stone fruit, berries and kiwifruit are generally tolerated.

Supplements are very important to help optimise joint repair and function and to lower inflammation.

The list I use is extensive but will always include the antioxidant minerals selenium, zinc, copper and manganese as part of a multi- formula.

Noisy bird makes ravishing rooster curry As I have mentioned before, it’s sometimes hard to create a winter dish when the sun is shining and you are encased in its warmth as you sit on the deck.

The chooks are out and I’m plotting the departure of the latest chick who decided to wake the neighbour at 6.45 this morning. After the last rumble in the chook house when the feathers were flying, you would think that any 16 week old chick that was thinking about its gender would book in for a sex change operation.

The unnamed rooster would make a good curry or could end up under the Wairoa bridge with all the other bachelors from town.

There are many types of curry I could use for my rooster. A favourite of mine is a Nonyan one from Penang. The method is simple, but some of the ingredients can only be bought from an Asian supermarket – always worth a visit.

This recipe is adapted so it is quicker to make and easier to eat as the original recipe calls for whole chicken cut into pieces and a stock made.

CURRY

Nonyan style rooster curry Serves 4 Ingredients 1.5kg boneless chicken thighs 2 large onions sliced 3 cloves of garlic 6 dried red chillies soaked in warm water 6-8 candle nuts (substitute macadamia) 1 tsp fish sauce 1 tsp ground turmeric 1 tsp ground cardamom 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp galangal powder 3 kafir lime leaf, shredded 2 tablespoons of tamarind concentrate 2 tablespoons of dark soya sauce 500ml to 1 litre real chicken stock 2 discs (approximately 120g) palm sugar Salt for seasoning Method Cut chicken into pieces and marinade for 20 minutes in tamarind mixed with ½ cup of water, the dark soya sauce and the shredded lime leaf.

In a food processor mix the candle nuts, one of the onions, the garlic, drained chillies and all of the spices. Blitz to a paste.

Heat a little oil in a wok or heavy based pan and cook the remaining onion until brown. Add the drained chicken pieces and cook with the curry paste. Stirring constantly, add some of the reserved chicken marinade a little at a time. Add some stock and continue cooking, adding liquid to reach the desired consistency. Splash in the fish sauce and grate in the palm sugar and season with a little salt. Serve with rice.

Hive thefts in focus

GPS technology is among options being considered by beekeepers to protect against the growing trend of hive thefts.

National Beekeeper’s Association Bay of Plenty branch president Dennis Crowley says an informal group of beekeepers in the Waikato are looking at options to safeguard their hives – such as installing cameras or using GPS tracking to help trace them.

“They are looking at what they can do with regards to using technology to protect the hives because it’s becoming an increasing frustration.”

Dennis’ comments follow the theft of eight hives in Opotiki earlier this month –

in what appears to have been a professional job by someone with beekeeping knowledge and equipment. He estimates the hives themselves were worth $300 each, and would have had little honey in them.

The latest theft follows 22 stolen hives from Omanawa in March, and a growing spate of hive thefts around the country.

Dennis says the increase could be motivated by people wanting hives for crop pollination or wanting to get into beekeeping because of manuka honey’s high price.

He says it is almost impossible to track stolen hives because the bees on the frames within the hive would probably be transferred into other hives and not easily recognised.

Elected members visit marae Elected members met with tangata whenua collective members on Waikari Marae at Matapihi last Friday.

This was an informal forum, which means it doesn’t rank as an official meeting, so no decisions can be made. Even so, you get a black mark and get marked down as truant if you don’t turn up! Can’t figure that one. Nonetheless, a lot can be achieved with discussion and dialogue.

The presentation from iwi centred around Treaty of Waitangi settlements and how they saw Council’s inevitable association and involvement.

The settlements are Government business. But Council is inevitably being dragged into the vortex as I have alluded to previously. One focus this time was on Mauao Recreation Reserve and iwi asked for title back to this land at the base of the Mount, containing the hot pools and holiday camp. They told us they had no commercial interest in the activities and wanted to enshrine them as they are. Iwi wanted to assist in management of all lands with cultural significance to achieve better outcomes and better management.

If Council wanted to sell any such lands, iwi asked them to consider giving iwi first right of refusal.

Elected members heard again about local Treaty of Waitangi grievances.

There seems little doubt British colonial rule and policy was very naughty to say the least. It might be appropriate from what we have been told for the British Government to step up to the mark with their taxpayers’ cheque book to help pay reparations instead of leaving it all to NZ taxpayers.

It was a relief to hear tangata whenua committee chairman Huikakahu Kawe say that these settlements would be “totally end of the grievance”.

For everyone’s sake that needs to happen in my view.

But another iwi speaker spoke of the settlements being only 1 per cent of what was taken and that the media won’t promote or publicise this fact.

Except Sun Media and this column. I’ve noted this before to highlight my concern that these settlements might be a catalyst for future generations of dissidents who might see an open cheque book. Full and final settlements have to mean just that.

At this forum meeting new CEO Gerry Poole was welcomed onto the marae and in his brief address he informed those present of the way he saw things for

Tauranga going forward and he hoped to confirm this week a new four and a half star 180 room hotel on the TV3 site in Durham Street opposite Baycourt.

This was news to some of us who are not on the subcommittee negotiating. It is good news and an indication of our economy moving out of the downturn.

Mayoral considerations

Nominations for council election open today. I will be standing again for Council at large. I’m keeping my options open as to whether I’ll nominate for Mayoralty. There are a number of factors to consider with that one. First, it’s relatively difficult to unseat a sitting mayor. Not impossible, but difficult! But it’s important for there to be a viable option candidate in the event of something untoward happening in the three months’ run up to the election. Say, for example, a complete twit runs against the Mayor of Auckland. And if there were only the two candidates and the current Mayor was incapacitated then the twit gets to be the Mayor.

And this election Government has handed far more power to the Mayor.

In my opinion to be effective any Mayor must have prior Council experience.

Another hoary old chestnut issue is raising its head again: the dreaded F word. Yes fluoride in the water supply gets raised nationally at election time by supporters mainly through the public health sector. I’m not speaking for or against this. Previously Council ran a referendum and fluoride was rejected. Many years ago when the debate was raging the Mayor of the day wrote to the Government seeking total indemnity from Government for Council in the event of any legal consequences Council might be open to with fluoridation.

As I recall it, the reply was a brief curt rejection.

Rena movements

I got cut off at the knees last week and my report on the Rena presentation had to be left out due to pressure on space. Rena owner and insurance representatives have really upped their game and are now regularly attending the Projects and Monitoring committee to keep everyone up to date with what’s going on out at Astrolabe Reef.

The wreck is now not visible above water.

They are bringing a heavy lift barge from Singapore to lift the bridge/ accommodation structure off the hull wreck. The bridge will be cut off in two sections of 375 tonnes each using huge three inch studded link chain used in a chainsaw like motion. Twelve tonnes pull one way and four tonnes the other for those interested in the technical details. Each cut will only take about 12 hours. We were informed the owners and insurers are considering options for the rest of the wreck including applying for resource consent to leave the wreck there.

That would be a great pity for the once pristine Astrolabe Reef. Someone asked if it was

proposed to put a light on the reef and the presenter replied that it wasn’t and that “everyone knew where Astrolabe was”.

Everyone except the Navigation Officer and Master of Rena. A light wouldn’t survive one good easterly blow out there.

It’s a wild bit of ocean in rough conditions. Much better to do your navigation properly, including not relying on electronic devices. Before radar and GPS no ship hit this underwater reef since D’urmont D’urville hit it in the French navy ship Astrolabe on February 16 1827.

He had no charts and no way of knowing it was there.

I read in the media about young people up to their necks in dept buying a house, how much of that is due to land agents who get, not earn $200,000 to $500,000 per year. If that is incorrect can we see their income for the last five years? Why do the public tolerate this situation when in the South Island they charge 1%? and one company sold 60 properties in one month and are very happy with that. Any takers?

Countdown culprits behind bars

Accident compensation inequality In about 1974 NZ was hailed as a world leader in bringing in an accident compensation scheme that gave immediate income related benefits, together with the costs of injuries incurred whether at work or at home. Before that there was a small income related compensation scheme but injured people had to sue their employers or other parties in order to get recompense. This often took years, heavy legal fees, and in the end was only successful if the “offender” had sufficient wealth. The new scheme was “no fault” and suing was prohibited.

Now we are returning to the old ways, but even worse there is now double dipping. Courts are awarding lump sums to victims under employment safety laws and

Councillor Bill Faulkner (Sun, 5 July) sounds very reasonable when he criticises the Regional Council’s Coastal Environment Plan and says “They draw lines over land that would mean owners losing rights on their land - all with no compensation.”

This is hugely ironic because this same Councillor was part of the Tauranga City Council which decided some years ago that all estuaryside freeholders in Tauranga should have setback restrictions placed on their properties, and worse, that it was all right to do this without their knowledge!

Of course many affected freeholders, having belatedly found out about this confiscation of their property rights, have rejected this setback and have taken the issue to the Ombudsman.

Indications are that Councillor Faulkner, like Mayor Crosby and Deputy Mayor Stewart, the new CEO and the planners, couldn’t care less about other people’s property rights.

The only Councillors who have shown any concern have been Councillors Guy, Curach and C Stewart.

I would certainly encourage coastal residents to fight against any moves to confiscate their property rights.

Councillor Faulkner has the right message but given his record, his motivation must be questioned.

My strong objection to this is that it becomes a lottery. The injured will only succeed against those who have the wherewithal and deep pockets. Others, including self employed, will miss out.

These two brothers may well be deserving of further benefits.

However instead of the Defence Minister looking to authorise ex gratia payments, he should be putting his efforts into the Government determining what’s wrong with the present Accident Compensation System and then ensuring that all such injured are treated fairly.

Injured people are still far better off than those disabled by illness.

Drugs hinder jobs Regarding comments by Martin Wilson: For many years I felt the same way as M Wilson’s comments about immigrants and our high unemployment rate.

Now I have seen the other side of the coin.

I taught Agriculture at Waiariki for six years and these comments are first hand. Of the 15 students I had ranging from 16 to 44 years old, 13 of them were dependant on drugs.

To ask them to attend a course by 8.30 am was in the same bracket as the government trying to lower our deficit, nearly impossible.

For weeks it was spelt out to them there is NO employment unless you are reliable and drug free but we were talking to the walls of the Institute.

I took them to a class room full of Indian students one day to try to motivate them to stop the drugs, by explaining that one day in the future you could be working for them. They swore and said “they are stealing our jobs” I had to therefore explain they were “not stealing your jobs. All you have to do is turn up for work and be drug free and you could have that job.”

You are off the mark Martin blaming the government when they should have had their morals instilled into them by their parents.

Good sorts expanding model railway complex There are some real good sorts in our city and I was privileged to meet with some of them recently.

I took my grandson to Memorial Park for the first time and was attracted to the site of the model railway complex. The trains were running and families were having rides. Everyone was having a wonderful time and one two-year-old grandson is now a train fan.

Johnson is also facing charges of failing to stop for red and blue lights, driving in a dangerous manner and failing to stop to ascertain injury.

They appeared Tauranga District Court on Tuesday where they were remanded in custody.

A Bay of Plenty man who hit two girls while reversing out of an Ohope driveway drunk has been sentenced to nine months’ home detention.

Ohope man Ramon Lee Hussey, 43, was also disqualified from driving for three years when he was sentenced by Judge Thomas Ingram in Whakatane District Court on Wednesday.

Hussey earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of drink driving causing injury to the young girls, who were aged four and seven years old at the time. He was ordered to pay his four-year-old victim $1000 emotional harm reparation and a further $750 to the young seven-year-old child.

At the site I noticed new track constructions and made enquiries of the members regarding these.

P-lab accused appears

A Mount Maunganui man facing drug charges in relation to the explosion of a P-lab on Oceanbeach Road had his case adjourned.

Michael Frederick Bonne, 57, appeared in Tauranga District Court on Tuesday charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of precursor substances, possession of precursor equipment and possession of precursor material, arson and cultivating cannabis.

His lawyer Tony Balme requested his client’s case be further remanded for a judicial intervention conference.

Judge Robert Wolff granted the appeal and remanded Bonne on bail until August 14.

Arson accused head to trial

Two Tauranga men accused of arson and kidnapping following a daylight carjacking last August will defend the charges at trial next month.

Daytona Byron Witeri Ranui, 22, of Judea and Tane Ringatu Richard Hill-Ormsby, 22, of Te Puna, are charged with robbery, kidnapping and arson in relation to an incident on August 14, 2012.

The pair are due to appear on August 16.

Under the boardwalk The ‘amended’ plan has stealthfully deviated from promoted pathway and fair enough Crs. Catherine Stewart and Murray Guy are justifiably miffed.

The Pilot Bay Boardwalk will be environmentally unfriendly for the grassed area users plus it will seriously affect the number of available road parking spaces. To top it off, this boardwalk is quite unnecessary and along with most other current titivations around Tauranga, it is really only being undertaken because Election time looms. Cost of $400k will rapidly become $800k when the dust settles and the price overruns will probably be met out of roading, parking or other accounts to disguise what has happened. A small concrete path from the wakas to the Mount boat ramp was justified but that’s all.

Present mess resembles zig zag crazy paving and ground all has to be reinstated.

As for the so called relic midden, there is no way this is ancient because its so near the surface of foreshore land reclaimed over the past 50 years, - more PC garbage, koha and archaeological surveillance costs here no doubt. A check of the site shows shells located around 30cm below the surface which is in pure topsoil.

Mounties, bear in mind the Boardwalk Sub-Committee comprises Mayor Crosby, Mount Ward, Crs. Moultrie and Stewart and last but not least, the main driver of this overkill expensive venture is Cr. Tony Christiansen.

Oily political fingerprints in hush-up

Historic classroom I am almost as ‘historic’ as this wonderful cute little building for which I have so many memories.

Otumoetai Primary School, was a two roomed building. I turned up as a 5 year old in 1948. The then teacher Miss Edna Galbowly taught 5 - 8 year olds and then we progressed to the senior class-room, 9 - 12 years under the superb guidance of Miss June Thorpe.

A total of 27 pupils.

However by the time I left end of 1954 and was sent to boarding school, Otumoetai Primary School had extended its buildings to 7 classrooms and boasted a total of 120 pupils. The 1950’s - a population explosion.

I have the answer to save ‘this building’.... it could be placed just down the road at ‘Maungawhare Reserve’.

Historic Grounds open to the Public.

What could be better? The Homestead ‘Maungawhare’ (built 1878) is registered as a ‘Tauranga Historic Place’. All the ‘children’ from the families who lived at Maugawhare went to the Otumoetai Primary School.

A 115 years ago - (1898) and onwards this building was the centre of the community. The past Otumoetai families held family days here - such as calf days Spring picnic competition days - Guy Fawkes exciting bonfire nights - community evenings plus many school concerts.

Please do not destroy this precious slice of Otumoetai History. Recall what the City Of Tauranga did to its iconic ‘Town Hall’ in the 1980s...... We cannot put back, that which we chose ‘ one day’ to eradicate - then later regret.

We are expected to believe that the recent oil spill by the Liloa in the harbour was news to the Regional Council chairman when contacted by the media - yeah right! We are also expected to believe that the decision that it should be kept hush unless someone asked about, didn’t have political fingerprints all over it - yeah right!

The reality is that CEOs of political organisations are required to keep their political masters informed of any incident that could be a media story.

In an election year, directives are issued that there be “no surprises” that could embarrass the chair and the board.

Last week the Council was also embarrassed about the possible downgrading of the Astrolabe Reef from ‘Outstanding Natural Character’, because of the Rena which the council had the power

to pre-empt and had done nothing.

A downgrading could mean that the insurer would not be required to totally remove the Rena.

So now, together with this embarrassment about the silence of an oil spill in the harbour, what on earth is going on at the Bay of Plenty Regional Council?

I’m not talking about the very fine hardworking staff, but the Board Governance. Following Rena, I would have thought there would have been protocols put in place for future events, no matter how small. What representations has the board been making to the Minister for Maritime about “Dedicated Shipping Lanes” to New Zealand’s busiest port. Come on Mr Chair, let’s end this shroud of secrecy, the public expect answers and openess.

Additional burden falls on ratepayers According to Cr Faulkner TCC has been informed by the Office of Treaty Settlements that compulsory co-governance boards on all district/ regional councils are to be set up to “implement Treaty settlements”, a committee (amazingly called the Tauranga Moana Group) comprising elected councillors and iwi appointed members for the co-governance of government requirements, will be set up, for which a pitiful amount has been set aside for the WBRC to fund.

Cr Faulkner was understandably unable to say under what legislative authority the Government is abrogating its role in Treaty settlements and transferring taxpayers’ expenses to ratepayers’ expenses.

The Consititution Review Panel is currently taking submissions on exactly

this intervention whereby one is allowed to object to entrenching of the Treaty into every Statute. Yet the Government has pre-empted this procedure and setting up a situation the interpretation of which could well presage exactly what NZers are protesting against.

In the context of [Local Government Act 2002] legislation there is provision for Maori to contribute to the decision making process.

In the context of this Government’s abrogation of its responsibilities local governments do not have the time or funds or experience to engage in further prolonged Treaty debate nor, under its own legislative duties, should their responsibilities to ratepayers be subjected to multiple time-out on this additional burden.

Time for the debate Even though the Mayor of Tauranga has admitted that the Council is assembling, under urgency, a massive document of information spanning the entire Bay of Plenty, he still states that it is not being driven by the prospect of any possible future Local Government amalgamation.

However other mayors seem to disagree, so who is being the most factual or are we just being mislead, by our local elected officials, into a possible false sense of security?

Besides the financial cost of creating this massive document it is also a fact that the community has not been involved in the debate in any way whatsoever even though a Tauranga City councillor recently stated that it was time for the community to be included.

After the election will be too late as the new council may then believe that they already have the mandate to proceed but in reality the people who are going to be affected the most, by any future amalgamations, have not yet had any opportunity to make comment and in my view this is entirely inappropriate and unacceptable.

Future amalgamations should only ever be considered if it is a win win for all residents involved and certainly Auckland citizens would not be accepting that this is what necessarily occurred to them during the forced amalgamations under Rodney Hyde.

Be very afraid, be very wary and I would recommend voting carefully this coming election.

Dish up Govt some of its own recipe With the Government’s proposal to outsource hospital meals, putting hundreds more employees out of work, it seems to me shortsightedness in election year.

However, the members of parliament should set an example.

Close Bellamy’s, the Beehive restaurant, and have them supplied with the outsourced meals. Instead of catering staff, a microwave oven should suffice.

At the same time the bar could be open for short periods of time as it appears to me when laws are passed insufficient detail is taken resulting in loopholes in the law which require expensive legislation, at the taxpayer’s expense, to close, due to overindulgence in refreshment.

Dignitaries would be overjoyed at having a defrosted meal as much as the hospital patients.

The chefs and catering staff would be reemployed at suitable rest homes or retirement villas.

Beautiful city I reply to your correspondents M Walmsley 5/7/13 And Maureen Guy 12/7/13. I feel they are both being very negative. M Walmsley says Tauranga is a depressing looking city to arrive in. Goodness gracious, Tauranga is one of the most beautiful cities in New Zealand with its harbour and lovely beaches.

People come here by the thousands to holiday. Cruise boats call into our great port bringing millions into our economy. I’m sorry M. Walmsley driving into Tauranga is more attractive than Rotorua or Hamilton. Just think of those two cities and the industrial areas you have you drive through to enter most ways.

When entering our city we have from the West the greenery of the Tauranga Golf Club and racecourse, from the north the picturesque Wairoa river and Bethlehem, the south lovely Pyes Pa and from the east the beach front or harbourside through Te Maunga to Maungatapu. Fancy comparing Hamilton Lake to all our lovely parks around our harbour and inner city. If you want to see ducks, swans, Canada geese and even eels go down to our Gordon Carmichael Reserve or do you not know where it is?

Yes the CBD has a problem but it is mainly a parking one. I’m sure it will be sorted and I commend the retailers and restaurateurs of downtown, they have great shops and cafe bar scene. And to Maureen Guy, yes we probably do need more Christmas attractions.

Possibly a connection could be made with the Lions or Rotary Clubs and they may be able to help. Keep positive, we live in a beautiful city and country.

People do some pretty stupid things in politics, but Labour’s idea of reserving seats for women, so as to achieve 50% gender equality, has got to be about the stupidest. To say that you have to have one womb for every two testicles is tomfoolery at its wackiest.

I would vote for a woman for any position in private enterprise or government – but not any woman.

Certainly it’s great to see women get along but if, as people, they deserve it.

If people have the necessary talent , drive and qualifications then they deserve achievement. If you start appointing people simply because of their possession (or lack) of testicles or wombs at the expense of capable people then things are not going to work out as well.

Equality used to be just that. Equality. Treating everyone equally, alike. These days it is not that at all.

Equality now means discrimination disguised as ideals; it means preferential treatment for special interest groups, including women.

The promoters of this Labour idea are not interested in equality, but rather recognition of inequality. No person should be disadvantaged for having the wrong reproductive organs, nor should any person be advantaged for the same reason.

Tauranga teacher’s new album exciting It’s official – four out of five people like Matt Bodman* I don’t personally know the man so I couldn’t say but I’ve long admired his music. His debut CD from a couple of years back is one of my favourite local releases so I was most excited earlier this month when I got an email to say that his new album is ready.

That’s good news since Matt’s been keeping it fairly quiet on the live front this year. Fair enough too. He’s been the musical director for the Tauranga Musical Theatre production of Grease, has a just-recently-arrived baby, and is a full-time music teacher at Otumoetai College.

But, in amongst that, he’s spent the last several months working on a new album, Hallelujah Circus, and an extraordinary piece of work it is.

Promising future

Matt’s debut was a lovely collection of poppy piano-based songs that reminded me of Greg Johnson. There were smart lyrics and good tunes and it promised a lot for the future. Hallelujah Circus, made with his band the Valentine Grind, takes things to a far more ambitious place.

There are eight songs and, at just 35 minutes, it’s not a long album. But this is so concentrated and focused that it never seems short. To my ears it’s an album of two halves.

The first half – this is just my theory – is a musical suite showing noticeable prog-rock elements. The songs are about the difficulties of forming new relationships on top of the baggage of old, and eventual healing through the redemptive power of nature.

“New Love, Old Pain” is the slow build-up, taking almost two minutes before the vocal starts and setting up two characters talking in the dark of night. This flows into “We Begin”, showcasing Matt’s remarkable voice

Beatles (or perhaps Nilsson) nods. Then there’s the wrap-up “Let’s Stay Indoors” with more of Matt’s superb banked harmonies and a coruscating guitar solo (Kelly McNamara, I think).

The fantastic production here is the work Nathan Sowter of La Petit Maison. Nathan has a studio at the Mount and is doing stunning work. The sheer complexity of what is going on here is astounding. All the musicians deserve huge kudos too.

Matt Bodman’s latest CD Hallelujah Circus out now. and ease of slipping into falsetto. The melody is catchy and unusual, building to a repeated questioning refrain.

That leads into the title track, the most prog-rocky of the set, a frantic dash with distinct hints of early Brian Eno, and on to “Finally”, where dawn is breaking and the music becomes warm and welcoming.

It’s an epic journey, alternately tender and bombastic, filled with complicated and, at times, challenging music.

And that is followed by four pop songs, which abandon the previous prog-rock leanings and show a distinctive Beatles influence. Or maybe it’s the influence of bands that sound like The Beatles. It’s there in the chord changes, the harmonies, and the odd musical touch such as the “Penny Lane” trumpet that pops up at the end of “New Quixote”. The exception is “Wenn ich älter bin (When I Am Older)” which MEDIUM name-checks Harry Nilsson in the intro and is a delightfully creepy ballad, the piano accompaniment slowly decaying into queasy dissonance.

And, seriously, check it out. This is remarkable stuff. *Before writing about people I do what all good journalists do: Google them. And, Googling Matt, aside from his Facebook page and many musical sites, I came across Ratemyteachers.com.

It’s a site that allows pupils to do exactly what the name implies and Matt gets a rating of four out of five stars. To be more precise, four people rate him at five stars (“Real nice guy and is so funny! He is awesome to be around!” is a typical comment).

Just weeks after his second most recent film arrived on DVD, here’s Woody Allen’s one before that. London-set You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger is the kind of stuff Allen seems to do effortlessly, a relaxed story of a couple of couples, with Josh Brolin’s blocked writer being tempted away from wife Naomi Watts by a sexy neighbour and Anthony Hopkins leaving his marriage for a fling with a gauche young prostitute. There’s nothing you haven’t seen before in other Woody movies and the various lightly-sketched moral dilemmas are never really resolved, but the cast are expert, making for a pleasant journey.

THE IMPOSTER Dir: Bart Layton - Starring: Adam O’Brian, Anna Ruben, Cathy Dresbach In 1994 13-year-old Texas teen Nicolas Barclay went missing. After three years the search for him had been almost abandoned with no clues of his whereabouts. Then he reappeared... in Linares, Spain. His family were ecstatic and welcomed him back with open arms but, in the meantime, he had changed.

He had a French accent. And his blue eyes were now brown.

It turns out that the boy they had welcomed back into their home was Frederic Bourdin, a 22-year-old French-Algerian grifter. It took a curious private eye to uncover the deception after Frederic had apparently fooled the family, the federal authorities, the US Embassy

and pretty much everyone else he met.

This is one of those stories that is so jawdroppingly strange that you have to keep reminding yourself that it is actually true.

Using a combination of interviews and recreations director Layton teases out the tale, giving it the tension and twists of a good thriller. And there are certainly a lot of twists.

To say more would be to reveal too much. The obvious conundrum of how the family could have so easily accepted this stranger raises more questions than answers in the ever-escalating maze of deception.

It makes for enthralling stuff - certainly one of the best documentaries I’ve seen this year.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone should really have had Will Ferrell in it. It’s exactly the type of Ferrell comedy we’ve grown used to, usually set in the world of minor sports. Here it’s magicians instead, Steve Carell the titular egotist and Steve Buscemi his put-upon partner. They are forced to rekindle their friendship and love of magic when their long-running Vegas show is threatened by the popularity of Jim Carrey’s outrageous street magician. And Carrey is far and away the best thing here, obviously modelling his outrageous character on Criss Angel and bringing a much-needed jolt of hilarious energy.

I Give it a Year is an upmarket English rom-com from Working Title, specialists in upmarket English rom-coms (Love Actually, Notting Hill, etc). It’s smart and funny and relatively unsentimental by rom-com standards. The story follows Josh (Rafe Spall) and Nat (Rose Byrne) through the rocky first year of their impulsive marriage. He’s a laid-back writer, she’s a tightly-wound advertising exec; they are not a natural match. Complications arise in the form of Simon Baker (for her) and Anna Faris (for him). The usual gang of eccentric friends (Stephen Merchant, Minnie Driver, Jason Flemyng) are underused but nonetheless entertaining.

Upside Down is one of the strangest love stories in quite a while. I guess it’s a fairy tale for grown ups. Here’s the set-up: in a galaxy far far away there are two planets just like earth which, through a quirk of gravity, are right next to each other. So close in fact that you can see people (upside down) just several metres away on the other world. One planet is rich, the other poor. And a boy from the poor planet (Jim Sturges) falls in love with a girl from the rich planet (Kirsten Dunst).

A bit syrupy for my taste but the visuals are impressive.

Letter to the editor In the June 14 issue, Peter Whitcombe of Jesus First Church wrote of being ‘filled with the Spirit (Eph.5:18) but didn’t explain ‘how to’.

I don’t know if he was approaching it from a Pentecostal viewpoint – I hope not, as the Pentecostal/Charismatic angle is built around verses out of context, from Israel’s programme mixing them with Paul’s epistles. I speak as an ex-Pentecostal who did just that. Yes, he’s right. Its’ a daily command, but Christians need to know how to accomplish it.

Believers are meant to let verse interpret verse, not private interpretations. Eph.5:19 says ‘speaking to yourselves in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord’.

In Colossians, verse 16b says ‘teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.’

Now, in Eph.5:18 it reads ‘and be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit’.

Lining up Ephesians and Colossians, we see scripture interpreting itself. How to be filled with the Spirit? By letting the word of Christ dwell in you richly, by good old-fashioned reading and bible study. mon. The biggest blunder in the church the last 1900 years has been starting the body of Christ in Acts 2 instead of Acts 9.

The battle for truth in these last days on Earth

A number of times in recent years, Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has referred to the issues and the conflict that surrounds Israel and the Jewish people as a battle for truth - not a battle for land or for peace or for justice or for Jewish rights - but a battle for truth.

This battle for truth is the over-arching point of contention in our world today, including in the Church. It is a battle that began in the Garden of Eden and that will continue through until the end of this present age.

However, it is a battle that is intensifying in these last days. In all ways, it is a battle for truth between the God of Truth who has revealed Himself to us in His Word, which is truth (Psalm 119:160) and the god of this world, Satan, who is the father of lies and in whom there is no truth (John 8:44).

For most people today, it seems that truth is fluid, depending on what side of the fence you are on and depending upon who you are listening to.

Rather than being absolute, truth to most people is relative to individual perspectives and circumstances. It is more important to have an opinion

than it is to hold to truth.

Being tolerant of divergent opinions and viewpoints and being all-inclusive are postulated as desirable attitudes whereas holding to biblical truth is seen as narrowminded and judgmental. As Isaiah 49:14 & 15(a) states: “justice is turned back, and righteousness stands far away; for truth has stumbled in the street, and uprightness cannot enter. Yes, truth is lacking.”

God has chosen the Church to be the bastion and the arena of truth.

Paul says in 1 Timothy 3:15 that "the church of the living God, (is) the pillar and ground of the truth."

Jude verse 3 exhorts us to "earnestly contend for the faith, once for all, delivered to the Saints", referring to

God's Word, the Scriptures, and the sound doctrine that is the revelation of God committed to us. We are to earnestly fight and to consistently contend for that faith, because it is the battle for truth and truth is one of the most powerful weapons God has set before His people.

"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth." (2 Timothy 3:16). Find a local Church that is Christ-centred and that adheres to God's Word as the truth.

Rolex and Vintage Watches Wanted

These brands can command large prices depending on the condition, what they are made of etc.

Many of the other brands are only required for parts. “In any event we will buy any mechanical watch, even if its only a few dollars for parts” said Tony Grant, buyer for the company. Huge Demand for Military Medals

urrently, throughout the world there is a very big demand by collectors for Military Medals. These cover all wars right through from the New Zealand Land Wars and the Boer War, to the First and Second World Wars and the later Korea and Vietnam conflicts. New Zealand Servicemen and Women first served overseas in the Boer War in South Africa around 1900 and the Military Medals awarded for this service are needed by the buyers, as are any other Medals from early New Zealand and the New Zealand Wars.
