Bombs, threats and extreme bad taste The world has taken another nasty turn, with bombings, threats of missiles and episodes of extreme bad taste. Such as, lowlifes celebrating the death of a former British Prime Minister.

It’s a weird, weird world out there

No matter how bad anyone thinks a PM could have been, in a democratically elected Government, there is no excuse for the poor taste of celebrating and protesting at someone’s funeral.

It really shows how detached these people must be from any sense of ethics or morals. Maybe it’s the sort of behaviour you’d expect after a dictatorship falls. Maybe it’s how North Koreans might react after they find out how they’ve been kept in the dark and fed propaganda for generations. But it’s not the sort of reasoned thinking to come from a civilised nation were MPs are elected by the majority.

And about that youngster in North Korea with his chubby finger poised over the Big Red Button – as one of our astute letter writers points out this week, that nation is so blinkered from the rest of the world, they have no idea how out of whack their country is.

North Korea is making threats of war against the South, the USA, Japan, The Simpsons, Barney, JR Ewing, the chicken that started the latest avian flu outbreak, and the person Yeah right who left the top off the toothpaste.

Those targets need not be concerned. Anything we’ve seen stamped ‘Made in Korea’ generally underperforms.

The worst that is likely to happen: the missile will fail just after launch, a wing will fall off, the hinges break and the lid will crack, it will blow the fuse box and leave a little stain on the mat.

Of course, in order to read this column in code, you need to assume these positions.

I will give you a few moments now to position yourself, so you can successfully decode the rest of the column.

Going down in history

The gay marriage bill made it into law this week and homosexuals nationwide have been celebating. Sorry, that should read celebrating. Tongues have been wagging on the lesbian social media sites, and in gay men’s circles they’ve been going nuts.

There’s been huge traffic on sites such as Twatter and Sitonmyfacebook.

Smoking hobbits

In other disturbing news, one of the world’s leading anti-tobacco researchers has slammed the New Zealand Government and the Hobbit movies for hypocrisy in sabotaging its stated aim of eliminating smoking by 2025. (We had hobbits for a barbecue and also noticed

Yes there is some climate change. This is nothing new. It never went away. The climate has been changing since the beginning of time, and possibly longer.

It will continue to change.

No amount of taxing naïve inhabitants is going to alter it noticeably.

Walkway issues As debate rages over the proposed Pilot Bay walkway, a secret plan is being hatched in downtown Tauranga for a similar structure.

Unreliable sources tell us the art gallery is plotting to construct its own boardwalk across Willow St and over the top of the council chamber.

Gallery spokesman Rich Palette says the platform will make it easier at funding application time for the gallery proponents to walk all over the councillors.

Creeping racism Finally, we’ve another letter from a reader concerned about the creeping use of Aotearoa New Zealand.

He’s got a point. The name of the country is New Zealand. Not Aotearoa, or Aotearoa NZ. No-one’s given anyone permission to change the name of the nation. This is insidious. It’s also a form of racism. If the name of the country is going to be changed, we should have that debate and make a decision.

Sneaky name changes You don’t just go around trying to sneak it in here and there and hope that no-one notices. There would be hell to pay if we decided to call Tauranga by its translated meaning, ‘The Anchorage’.

Messing with the names of places erodes our sense of national pride and is, arguably, as bad as flag burning. Or flag shooting, if you reside in the east.

We live in New Zealand – that is the name of it. Show some national pride.

Friends of the Library are hoping for good news when the Greerton Library extension plans are discussed on Monday.

Key to their optimism is the reallocation of $1.8 million in development funds originally paid in development contributions for satellite libraries at Welcome Bay and Bethlehem.

“While they [the council] were checking over the public/private partnership, they realised that with no new library branches in the 10 year plan they still have the $1.8 million in development contributions for libraries and nowhere to spend them,” says Friends of the Library president Kate Clark.

The $1.8 million was last mentioned at a Tauranga City Council meeting in November 2011 when it was revealed that the money was unavailable because it had been loaned out.

“Now it’s back,” says Kate. “It’s come out in the annual plan that the cost of this project has increased to $1.8 million, to be funded from already collected development contributions.

“That would take it from 450m2 to about 970m2, quite a good size - and it would get rid of that leaky section down the Plunket-side of the building.

“It will be lovely for Greerton. I mean you look at the size of that library and the number of people.”

It represents a complete turn-around by the council which last year defied the Greerton community’s wishes by deciding on a $520,000 library extension of 200m2.

Annual plan submissions saw the community overwhelmingly support a $1.3 million, 450m2 extension.

A third option, demolishing and rebuilding a 970m2 library with help of a private sector partner was unsuccessfully pursued by a task force including councillors Larry Baldock, Tony Christiansen, Bill Grainger, Terry Molloy.

“To get that $1.8 million ear-marked against Greerton has taken some work,” says Kate. “I imagine it would have taken some legal work because it was originally set for Welcome Bay and Bethlehem in the 10 year plan.

“So that’s why we are excited. We’ve got money out there. My concern is it does get used.”

The Library Task Force will present two options to elected members for Greerton Library extensions.

The presentation is at about 3.15pm and Friends of the Library is hoping Greerton Library supporters will join them.

Same sex marriage bill passes

Same sex couples can now marry in New Zealand after Parliament passed Marriage Amendment Bill this week.

The bill passed 77 votes to 44 in favour making NZ the 13th country in the world to legalise gay marriage. MPs made a conscience vote with no instruction from their parties. The 77-44 vote was the same result as the bill’s second reading.

Most Bay of Plenty based MPs voted against the bill including Tauranga MP Simon Bridges, Independent MP Brendan Horan, Bay of Plenty MP Tony Ryall and Rotorua MP Todd McClay.

Maori Party MP Te Ururoa Flavell voted in favour of the bill.

Truck rolls on SH2

A section of State Highway 2 between Tauranga and Katikati was closed for up to 10 hours this week after a truck and trailer unit carrying hazardous substances rolled.

A truck and trailer unit carrying bottles containing acetylene, LPG, oxygen and nitrogen crashed around 1.27am on Tuesday near Wainui South Road. The driver and passenger escaped without injury while residents of at least one home were evacuated as a precaution.

Bay runners in Boston bombing

Tauranga Boston Marathon runners Stephen Blair and Judith May escaped uninjured when two bombs went off near the finish line of the marathon – killing at least three people and injuring dozens more.

Stephen and Judith, who completed the marathon in 3hr17mins and 3hr24mins respectively, were back in their hotel room about 400 metres from the finish line when the two bombs went off 4.5hrs after the race started.

Truck crash in Otumoetai

Power was cut to parts of Otumoetai this week when a City Care truck crashed into a pole bringing powerlines down onto a house.

The small utility truck crashed into the pole on Vale Street around 9am on Thursday which in turn smashed through roofing and guttering of a brick home.

Emergency services cordoned off the road while power authorities worked on site. No one was injured in the crash.

School burglars caught on camera

Tauranga Police are seeking assistance in identifying the people responsible for a spate of burglaries at Tauranga schools.

The same group of offenders are believed to be responsible for a number of burglaries in March and April, where electronic goods including Apple iMac computers were stolen.

Tauranga animal welfare inspector Jason Blair is outraged people even consider testing legal highs on animals.

“Under the Animal Welfare Act there are certain regulations that need to be followed when taking into account whether testing on animals can occur.

“Certainly, you have to weigh up the benefit to human kind as opposed to the danger and harm it poses to the animals.”

He says the SPCA would oppose testing of any kind, but when its cancer research or any number of things which go to benefit human kind, then of course it is a different story.

Tauranga woman Denese Robinson is backing the petition and knows firsthand the effect testing can do to animals.

She adopted her beagle Myska from a Hastings couple two years ago after they told her she was no use to them anymore.

“I got her from a supposed kennel in Hastings. They said she was two-anda-half-years-old and she had two litters of puppies and they didn’t want her anymore.

“When I got her she was traumatised and I couldn’t do anything with her.

She sat in the corner for three days and didn’t know what grass was. She had been in a pen all her life.”

It took Denese two years to train Myska not to be afraid and how to act like a normal dog, she says.

“They had been testing on her. She had been tested with hormone treatments. She had a very hard life and she didn’t trust anyone.

“I think it is disgusting people want to test on animals. If they want to take the drugs, then they should try it on them and not the dogs.”

Demolition paves way for future Plans to erase and re-develop the Merivale community’s cramped facilities took an enormous step forward following the demolition of the Hosanna Church this week.

The building, built in 1940 and recently purchased by Tauranga City Council for $330,500 from the Hosanna Fellowship Trust in February, was demolished in an attempt to add valuable space for both the centre and the community.

Merivale Community Services Centre services manager John Fletcher says discussions are underway with council and the public surrounding future plans for a purpose-built community centre, with devoted youth space and purpose-built community rooms.

There is also the option of uplifting the community centre to make way for a larger centre spanning across the two sections.

“They [council] bought it essentially to look at how we could expand our services in Merivale,” says John.

He believes a “multi-use space” for the Merivale community will be beneficial in helping promote what is one of the lowest decile areas in Tauranga.

The Merivale Community Centre is not seeking council funding for its expansion plans.

It is believed this could be a three to five year project. “This is not going to be created without the support of the wider Tauranga community.”

Third CEO starts

Tauranga City Council’s third new CEO in as many years, is expected to make his first public appearance at Monday’s Tauranga City Council meeting.

Former Wellington City Council CEO Garry Poole began work at TCC on Monday, with official greetings and staff briefings.

“Then he went straight into work,” says Mayor Stuart Crosby on Tuesday. “I had a briefing with him and then he met two groups of the staff in the afternoon and another this morning, so basically on his first day and a half, he’s spoken to all his staff.”

Garry met with the Executive Team as a group in the afternoon, and began one-on-one meetings with other elected members and senior management – meetings which continued for the rest of the week.

“His intentions are to get around the city as quick as possible and meet as many stakeholders that we have a relationship with as soon as possible,” says Stuart.

“He has been here already doing interviews because as you know we are undergoing reorganisation.”

Tauranga’s hockey stars are preparing to play their first international match on the city’s new hockey turfs at the Four Nations series this weekend.

Black Sticks Gemma Flynn, Rose Keddell and Sam Charlton will take a whack at defeating Korea and in the last round of the competition at 3pm Blake Park on April 20.

Playoffs will kick off at 1pm and 3.30pm on Sunday.

At the official opening of the new hockey turfs earlier this month, Gemma said the Quad

Series will be a challenge – but one the women are ready to tackle.

“It’s not going to be easy, but I’m looking forward to playing in front of a home crowd and hopefully we can come through and have a win.”

She says Argentina’s team will be the biggest challenge, being the number two team in the world.

“They’re fast and skilful, they’ve got a bit of flair as well – and the world’s best player on their team.”

Gemma is looking forward to playing on the new turfs, which she says are “right up there” with some of the world’s best.

“I had a hit the other weekend

and it felt really good.

“I’m really excited, it’s a big project and the whole community got in behind it and supported it, it’s really awesome to see.

“I’m just really proud, when you’ve played somewhere since you were five years old, and coming back and seeing this all go ahead and seeing the next generation come through is really exciting.”

The four nations tournament is being hosted in New Zealand from April 10-21.

Following this, the Black Sticks will begin preparing for the World League Series in June.

Backing women for 40 years Soroptimists around the world and in Tauranga have been making a difference to women and girls’ lives in New Zealand for 40 years.

“She fits perfectly into our advocacy role for women,” says Tauranga Soroptimist International president Carol Butler.

Soroptimists International work to raise awareness and advocate for human rights.

The organisation also monitors actions in relation to the rights of women and girls.

Volunteers are being sought to aid the Salvation Army in its annual Red Shield Appeal from April 29-May 5.

Last year’s appeal raised less than $20,000 – a sum down on past years due to a low number of volunteers taking part, says Tauranga district’s appeal coordinator Jennifer Reid.

“We were down on normal, simply because we could not man all the sites. People are willing to give, we are a very fortunate charity, and it’s just a matter of having the people to do it.

“It’s a huge task, as you would imagine, within our own little Salvation Army we don’t have a huge number of people to collect.”

Jennifer says everyone is welcome to help out in the charity’s biggest annual fundraiser, collecting donations outside varying supermarkets around the city – with money raised going straight back into the Salvation Army.

“It’s just a matter of giving the minimum of an hour, or more if they can, and just representing the Salvation Army.”

Endurance rider Tim Farmer has himself firmly in the saddle this year as he prepares for a maiden tilt at being crowned World 24-hour Mountain Bike Champion.

The 31-year-old, formerly of Tauranga, will compete in this weekend’s Nduro 24 in Rotorua’s Whakarewarewa Forest as he builds toward the WEMBO World Solo 24-hour Mountain Bike Championships held at Mount Stromlo in Canberra, Australia in October.

After a four year absence on the mountain biking circuit, the Nduro 24 returns as a true test of stamina, endurance and riding abilities in some of the best trails the Bay of Plenty has to offer.

is confident of a podium finish this weekend after slogging it out on the Bay of Plenty hills during summer.

With a large part of the race falling at night, riders will ride continuously with special highpowered lights on both their helmet and bike, while in the pit area a mechanical feeder will be on standby alongside a spare bike if needed.

Making the step up to 24-hour solo racing requires a larger degree of technique and skill compared to 24-hour team riding and six-12 hour solo races, says Tim. “You need to be thinking about looking after yourself because you can start to hallucinate.”

Operas benefitting students

Preparing a battle plan

The call is going out for Western Bay residents to get involved in planning World War One’s 100th anniversary commemorations being launched next Anzac Day. Mount Maunganui RSA general manager Peter Moss, who is leading the plans to organise a four –year calendar of events from next year, wants to hear from anyone with artefacts, letters or stories from the era or suggestions on ways to mark the milestone.

Tauranga WW100 organising committee, says they hope to bring the history alive with a mobile museum that will travel around the region with exhibitions on different campaigns over the four year period.

“There could be exhibitions to commemorate the battlefields – Passchendaele, Mons, Egypt, Palestine, Gallipoli and so forth.

We are very excited about the project.”

Peter says the committee also wanted a major focus on life in Tauranga at the time.

“You hear about the soldiers at the front and the battles themselves but you don’t realise just

what went on back home, just how tough it was back home.”

He says there was strong support for the war effort in Tauranga, with many soldiers from the area and strong support for returning soldiers after the war – “there is a big history here”.

Peter says there is strong support from other partner organisations - including the Hauraki Regimental Association, veterans groups, Tauranga council’s heritage collection and historical society. Peter can be contacted about items to loan or suggestions for commemoration events at the Mount RSA.

Tauranga Opera Forum’s student fundraising initiative is on again next month with two DVD screenings of ‘Manon’ by Jules Massenet.

The recently established organisation aims at encouraging and aiding the enjoyment of opera while donating funds towards two student scholarships for talented Tauranga students.

Running monthly since February, the event has caught the eye of some opera enthusiasts but more people need to know about it, says organiser John Hodgson.

He says the fundraising initiative is focusing on youth and arts, with two scholarships in mind.

“One to provide financial support for one local secondary student who has shown excellence in any particular field of the arts to spend one term at a school in China, attending school as a regular student but additionally to get specialist tuition in their particular field of the arts, and secondly to fund the singing tuition in Tauranga for one year of another student.”

‘Manon’ will screen on May 15 at 1.30pm ($20) and 6pm ($25) at 72 Devonport Rd. Tickets include a complimentary glass of wine, some fine finger food and a ticket in the lucky draw.

“I want to be able to teach the kids 100 different moves so when they come into a game they don’t

freeze. We are trying to produce confident and positive young people.”

Along with promoting a child’s silky skill set or unearthing the next Marco Rojas, Harry is attempting to change the seasonal mentality where football is seen as a two term sport, as opposed to the full benefits of a year-round Coerver program.

“We are looking to increase numbers to 300-400 during the winter months and retaining them throughout summer rather than experiencing a seasonal drop.”

The second term of Coerver starts on May 6 running for eight weeks.

Multi-million tank

Towering at 15 metres high and weighing in at 254 tonnes, Terminal NZ’s new multi-million dollar storage tank holds enough fuel to power the average family car for 7400 years.

The multi-million dollar storage tank, freshly painted with a unique energy-themed mural at the Hewletts Road terminal facility was officially opened by Minister of Energy and Resources and Tauranga MP Simon Bridges today – ramping the company’s capacity above 80 million litres.

With its characteristically large proportions, the tank has the same capacity as four Olympic-sized swimming pools of fuel.

Terminal New Zealand general manager Dave Bodger says the

tank takes on-site storage capacity to 88 million litres with six tanks above the 10 million litre mark – the third largest facility of its type in New Zealand. The storage tank sets itself apart with a stunning and enormous piece of street art which has been painted on the Hewletts Road side of the tank by Auckland artists Cut Collective. Painted under cover of darkness, the artwork is a multi-coloured 15 metre high, 30 metre wide stand out feature looking to explore ideas around the company’s use of energy, both in creation and consumption.

Dave says although Hewletts Road is lovely, they wanted something “a wee bit different”.

“We want to do something completely different and unexpected and special for the community with the new tank, and give the newest tank an extreme makeover.”

Not a last minute finish It was a last minute entry in the Tauranga Half Marathon for Tauranga mother Jessica Ruthe and her husband Ben Ruthe – but it was definitely not a last minute finish.

Jessica and Ben registered for the marathon run on Sunday April 14 – the day of the event and they both crossed the finish line as winners.

Jessica has not been running for a while and says their last minute entry was spontaneous.

“I just thought it was a nice day to do it really. It was a nice course.” Out of more than

600 entries Jessica was the first woman to cross the finish line.

She ran the 21.1km half marathon in 1 hour 17 minutes and 3 seconds. Ben was the second man to cross the finish line in a time of 1 hour 11 minutes and 31 seconds.

Jessica says before giving birth to her two children she used to do a lot of track running and has won many national titles.

She says the last time she completed a long distance run was about five years ago when she ran in the Tauranga City2Surf.

Jessica says she is unsure if she will continue to run in any more marathons as she is focusing on being a mum.

Children’s Arataki adventures The spirit of adventure takes hold in Arataki over the next fortnight with a treasure hunt, roller fun and an orienteering challenge on offer as part of Play in the Bay’s Adventure Month.

Arataki Community Centre manager Matthew Strange has thrown his support behind the Sport BOP-organised initiative promotion, saying it’s a great way to encourage children to get active over the school holidays.

Matthew expects strong interest in the events which are being offered as part of the centre’s school holiday programme for five to 12-year-olds – saying similar events organised previously were a hit.

A beach treasure hunt on Tuesday morning will give children a chance to unearth a wide variety of hidden prizes, while next Tuesday (April 30) children can bring along their scooters, skates bikes or skate boards for a ‘roller morning’

with activities in the Arataki skate bowl and courses set up in the area (helmets are compulsory).

“There will be something for all abilities including a few fun childrens’ courses set up for the not so advanced kids who aren’t ready for the skate park.”

An orienteering challenge in the afternoon (April 30) will teach children navigation skills when they set off on missions around the area. All the half-day activities are being run as part of the holiday programme, with each four-hour session costing $21. Registrations are essential on 575 2048.

“It’s about giving parents a chance to do something else – to go out and do whatever they need to do.”

Capturing community stories From teaching children to write stories, Mount Maunganui filmmaker Joanne Rye-McGregor is now helping to share untold stories in our backyard from behind the camera.

After 30 years as a school teacher Joanne decided to change direction six years ago – eventually settling on retraining as a documentary director with a one-year intensive course in Auckland.

“Everybody has a story, they just may not know it,” declares Joanne, who describes her role as a privilege – sometimes hearing stories from her interview subjects before their family members.

From having her first documentary ‘Living Taonga’ accepted into a few highly regarded New Zealand film festivals, she has made a diverse range of pieces – including splat film ‘Ride for Life’ which helped cycle safety programme Kids Can Ride win an award.

Joanne’s talent at capturing interesting personal stories was highlighted with the recent premiere of her film ‘Kiwi As’, the second film in a series of four documentaries, in the ‘Face to Face’ series she is making for

the Tauranga Regional Multicultural Council about our region’s diverse community. The film will be screened by the multicultural council on Wednesday.

‘Kiwi As’ focusses on Omokoroa woman Jan Poole, a granddaughter in the Ah-Chee family – an early Auckland Chinese family with links back to 1877. The film, which was screened at the New Zealand China Friendship Society’s Tauranga branch AGM, intertwines Jan’s story with the background of the poll tax that was imposed on Chinese settlers. Joanne hopes the films encourage people to reexamine their

attitudes, saying statements from her subjects help viewers see life from their perspective.

Among them is Jan’s comment on how many people speak slowly to her – assuming the third-generation Kiwi is a newcomer.

Tauranga sea cadets’ Anzac force Tauranga’s sea cadet unit TS Chatham has proven itself to be among the country’s best after being named runner-up unit at the recent national regatta championships.

Tauranga’s TS Chatham sea cadets were the runners-up at the national championship.

The unit, which just missed out on the top title in a competitive tussle with the eventual winner Nelson’s TS Talisman, will have Anzac Day poppies available at the Tauranga Farmers Market on Saturday as part of the market’s commemorations. The cadets will have a boat on display, with rigging displays at 9am and 10.30am, while the Tauranga Brass Band will be playing nostalgic music. Market manager Trixie Allen says it is always important to honour Anzac Day to recognise the major sacrifice which had

been made to preserve our lifestyle and it is great to be able to support the younger generation.

“With the Sea cadet’s recent success we thought it would be great to get them along.” Training Ship Chatham unit commander Lieutenant Commander Lee White says the cadets did the unit and Tauranga proud after earlier winning the northern region regatta competition. The title involved sailing races, and competitions in first aid, shooting, mast-building, navigation and drill. Lee says Chatham’s eight-strong team only missed winning the national title by 3.5 points. Lee says the title was a great effort for the small 20-strong unit and the perfect way to top off last year’s 50th anniversary celebration. The unit was also named the Top Efficient unit in the Northern region earlier this year and came second in the National Efficiency award.

Country for sale Western Bay of Plenty Council explains debt and rates going cheap Equality is topical today with much of the country focussed on redefining marriage but meanwhile other legislation is slinking through parliament bereft of full scrutiny.

Take Simon Bridges’ amendment to the Crown Minerals Bill.

Simon says it’s about safety, others say its designed to stop well-meaning New Zealanders protesting against mineral, oil and gas exploration at sea.

With the passing of this bill protestors will be more heavily legislated against than miners.

The likes of Lucy Lawless would be jailed for her recent peaceful protest.

However, there are other ramifications within this bill. With

the Rena debacle, locals realise the significance of protecting our ocean. This Government has proved they cannot remove oil from a ship on a rock, let alone leaks 15003000 metre below sea level.

Delving deeper, the proposed law ‘wholesales’ out New Zealand’s mineral wealth by way of mining permits to overseas companies with the added bonus: “ free of pesky protesters or public perusal”.

Does the average Kiwi appreciate the extent of our offshore mineral wealth?

It is huge and has accumulated over millions of years.

The Western Bay of Plenty District Council meeting on the annual plan in the Katikati Memorial Hall last Tuesday was concise, purposeful and informative.

The nine councillors, Western Bay of Plenty Mayor Ross Paterson, Deputy Mayor Paul Thomas, financial and other managers, with their assistants, were available to answer any questions from the public. The questions from the floor were all focused on council debt and rates affordability which is quite

understandable. Ex-councillor Ross Goudie was keen to pursue council debt and the other four attendees were pensioners from the Park Lane Retirement Village who only wanted to talk about rates. The Local Government League Table focused on the same topics so it was of little wonder that the council was prepared for a grilling from the floor.

The rates discussion came to an end when the council maintained the necessity of starting their rate projection calculations with the four per cent Local Government Cost Index figure, which they saw as their ‘cost of living increase’, while

acknowledging that pensioners would be lucky to get a two per cent increase in income.

The accumulating shortfall every year is disastrous for pensioners despite rate reduction offers from council.

For many the reduction has already been swallowed up by their rate increases during the last two years. Busy out and about in the Bay As Tauranga MP and Minister of Energy and Resources today I am opening a new terminal for Gull Petroleum’s fuel facility on Hewletts Rd. Gull serves its North Island market from its Tauranga fuel storage terminals and its capacity with the additional terminal rises from 78 million litre to 88 million litre. Not bad from the Bay of Plenty! I’m really looking forward to watching some world class hockey at the newly turfed Tauranga Hockey Centre at the Mount on the weekend. At 3pm

Saturday the Black Sticks women’s team will take on number eight in the world, Korea. If you come a little earlier you can see Argentina playing the USA. Last week, the Social Security (Benefit Categories and Work Focus) Amendment Bill passed into law.

Changing our welfare system is central to our plan of building better public services. We campaigned on it – and we are now delivering it.

The current welfare system isn’t working. Twelve per cent of our working age population receive a benefit, and 220,000 children are growing up in benefit-dependent homes. Too many people are being trapped in a life of limited choices, poverty and poor health. It’s also costing taxpayers too much. That’s why getting people off welfare and into work means a better life, better opportunities, and a brighter

future for people and their families. The bill requires job seekers to be drug-free and ready to work. We are also stopping benefits for those on the run from police with an outstanding warrant for arrest; and introducing health, education and social obligations for beneficiaries with children – so their kids get the support and services they need. This means we’re clamping down on welfare fraud and tackling longterm benefit dependence.

The changes we are making now build on some of the achievements we’ve already made for New Zealanders.

We implemented Future Focus in 2010, and now 171,000 people have moved off benefits – that’s 165 people leaving a benefit every week, on average.

The mirage of outsourcing Government announced last week that hospital meals throughout the country will be outsourced, at a cost of an estimated 1300 jobs.

In the same week, Queenstown Council announced that outsourced services will be brought back under council management. Job losses were expected.

These lost jobs are hardly consistent with the Government’s claimed efforts at job creation.

Queenstown was the king of outsourcing, and it did not work. As the central problems, it cites cost blowouts, poor service quality, lack of communication among service providers and slow turnaround by contractors.

Hospital food will now be made in Auckland or Christchurch, frozen, and shipped throughout the country at a significant carbon cost. The provider is an international company, meaning profits, if there are any, will be shipped overseas.

Outsourcing can look cheap when only the bottom line is considered. In Queenstown’s case, the cost savings were illusory and services declined. Do we really need to repeat the same experiment in hospitals?

One challenge is that the council is a distributed organisation spread over five sites (Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, Rotorua, Edgecumbe and Whakatane).

The regional council still has its official headquarters in Whakatane, but it spreads its meetings across the region, alternating regular meetings in Tauranga, Whakatane and Rotorua This means that there is quite a bit of travel involved for both staff and elected officials. However, the council uses technology where it can to reduce the need to travel and to increase productivity. Where possible, council’s video conferencing facilities are used to enable staff and councillors to participate in internal meetings without travelling long distances.

VILLAGE

I find this works very well and it saves huge amounts of time and petrol. However, one area where this doesn’t work is for formal council and committee meetings where the Local Government Act prevents a councillor from voting if they are not physically present. During the years, Local Government New Zealand has sought changes to this legislation to enable remote participation in meetings by elected officials, but to no avail. With today’s technology, this is very short-sighted.

Every year Peter attends both ANZAC Day services to remember those who failed to return from Gallipoli and other conflicts during the last 99 years.

He says this year is no different.

“Once again it’s that time of year to remember the dawn landing at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915.

“I think it’s just really special.

It’s one day of the year that everybody can remember.”

Two services are held at the Mount Maunganui Cenotaph on Marine Parade every year.

Each year veterans, RSA members, including current serving defence force members, cadets, police and many other organisations assemble at Mount Drury Reserve at 5.45am for the dawn service and again for the civic service at 9.15am.

Lunch is served at midday followed by dinner at 6pm. There is entertainment all day long, says Peter.

Peter says about 500 former World War II veterans are registered RSA members and attend the services when they are able to.

“It’s lovely to see. It’s quite moving in that respect.”

Mount RSA president Paul Franks will preside and reverend Marie Gilpin will officiate both services.

Mayor Stuart Crosby will be addressing the civic parade. Royal New Zealand Navy retired commodore John Peddie is the guest speaker at the 9.15am service.

Tauranga band celebrates anniversary

Tauranga band Punktuation is celebrating their one year anniversary with the Rose and Thistle Tavern in Papamoa this weekend. It has been one year since the band last played at the tavern.

To celebrate the band is performing a mix of covers from The Ramones, The Clash, Motorhead, Green Day, The Police and Weezer at the Papamoa pub on Saturday.

Punktuation was formed about 16 months ago and band member Peter Cook says the group now has its strongest line-up.

Target reached for Tauranga preschools As the number of children attending preschool continues to rise, statistics show Tauranga has already met the Government’s future

Data from 2012 shows 98.1 per cent of Tauranga children who started school during 2012 had participated in early childhood education – just more than the Government’s national target for 2016 of 98 per cent. Tauranga MP Simon Bridges this week praised the news Tauranga is fully involved in the preschool scene – saying he hopes the rest of the nation will follow suit.

“We want all children to get the best possible start to their education, and early childhood education helps children become confident, ready to engage, and eager to learn.”

The Government is investing $1.4 billion in ECE, which includes 20 hours’ ECE funding for all families.

In the last Budget an additional $48 million in equity funding which supports priority learners, vulnerable children and communities who would otherwise find it more difficult to access ECE, was invested. The Weekend Sun found some Tauranga preschools are so busy they now have waiting lists.

Living out life’s challenges a good example Hello everyone, this week I’m going to chat about challenges.

Why? Because I’ve just been on the most extreme challenge of my life. Having visited the Great New Zealand Trek website and viewing beautiful photos of New Zealand atop of mountains, this seemed like me – and a mountain bike was my preferred option.

Going through the paddock gate on day one, the only place to look, or go, was up. That was it for most of the trip: unformed tracks, ruts, rocky rivers and holes to boot.

At the end of each day, I found a poop-free spot for the tent and erected it.

I likened the experience to completing a degree in mental toughness. The first two or three days were really about mind over matter. I found myself at the back of the group, not enjoying myself.

By day three, I had a re-think and found myself up with the front group. I quickly realised it was easier up there. The front group of people were positive thinkers, and encouraging.

What’s more, we were into camp hours earlier, had the first showers, and had our tents up enjoying drinks and nibbles sooner.

By making this mindshift, I felt better, gained a sense of achievement and reshaped my calf and thigh muscles to boot.

How is this relevant to captivating children?

If children grow up in a positive, stimulating and challenging environment they will develop and grow into wholesome, complete adults.

They will achieve this through having positive, successful role models. Dwell on the positive and move forward rather than allowing negative thinking to take over.

This is especially important because children under six months cannot get influenza vaccinations themselves and are at high risk of getting influenza. Influenza immu-

nisation is free for pregnant women until July 31, 2013.

The World Health Organisation’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts recently recommended that pregnant women should be the highest priority in seasonal influenza vaccination programmes.

Pregnant women are at particularly high risk of severe complications and death from influenza because of a range of changes that occur during

pregnancy including changes to lung function, increased heart output and oxygen consumption, and changes to immunity.

Influenza infection in young infants can result in hospitalisation and can lead to pneumonia or middle ear infection.

Infants of immunised mothers are nearly 50 per cent less likely to be admitted to hospital with influenza than those of unimmunised mothers.

Better heart care for central North Island Waiting times for heart tests have been slashed and the length of hospital stays reduced for patients with severe chest pain in the central North Island, says Health Minister Tony Ryall.

“This is a real improvement in the quality of care patients receive,” he says.

North Island patients were receiving an angiogram within 72 hours of presenting with serious chest pain – one of the lowest intervention rates in the country. Now, more than 70 per cent regularly receive an angiogram within 72 hours.

“This is exactly the approach we need to work towards in our public health services. We are now considering how these achievements can best be replicated in other areas.”

Dr Gerry Devlin says chest pain is a key indicator of a pending heart attack and prompt diagnosis can make all the difference in stopping this serious medical event.

“One of the challenges in reducing the delay is between being admitted to a local hospital and receiving specialist care. The delay can be especially significant when a transfer between hospitals is required.”

increased across the period, showing a recovery from the severe drought of 2008. “Throughout this period, labour inputs have shown little change, resulting in rising labour productivity for the industry.” Finance and insurance services industries also made a significant contribution to labour productivity – up 2.7 per cent each – while information media and telecommunications were up 4.3 per cent. Labour productivity measures the quantity of goods and services produced for each hour of labour.

Adlam’s hopes for home advantage After a frustrating start to the karting season Papamoa’s Josh Adlam is hoping this weekend’s hometown advantage will help him return to form in the Rotax Max Junior Challenge.

Josh, 14, developed an interest in karting after watching his uncle Greg Ablom compete on the track – and his first blast around the track in a friend’s kart, aged nine, had him keen to get into the motorsport. “I loved it. It was exciting. As soon as I came into the pits I said to dad I want one.”

Both his father Todd and Josh soon had their own karts, but a year after starting Todd gave racing away to put his focus into supporting Josh who was racing competitively.

Last year was his first in the Rotax Max Junior series, where top racers aged 12-17 compete in a six part series around the North Island, racing in karts powered by 125cc Rotax Max engines which reach speeds of up to 125 km/h on the straights. It was a fair debut finishing the series eighth out of about 30, but he would have finished about sixth if he had not broken his chain at last year’s Te Puke meet.

“We were running fifth (in the Te Puke race) then on the last corner my chain came off and so I ended up being last. It cost me a couple of points in the series.”

Josh is determined to make sure there is no repeat next weekend when Kartsport BOP host the third round of the six-round series at Fagans Valley Raceway track off Alley Rd, Te Puke. After a mixed start to the season – due in part to his new European kart chassis which has required a complete change in driving style – Josh is focussed on finishing near the top in the next four rounds to help achieve his goal of a top five series finish this year.

“Some karts you need to drive aggressively to get around the corners like my old kart but this new kart its European you have to drive smoothly – so I’ve had to learn to drive pretty smoothly.”

first round in Palmerston North, he inched ahead to 11th in last month’s Rotorua round – held back by a poor starting position and being caught in a crash.

“I’ve had some bad luck in the first few rounds but hopefully if we go well in the next four rounds I could be up there.”

Fellow Tauranga karter Blake Harris, who is racing for his first season in the Rotax Max Junior series, is also hoping the local advantage will help him after a mixed start. Josh has three years left racing in the junior leagues, with the clear goal of winning the series so he can compete at the World Rotax Max Challenge

against two karters from around the world.

“That’s the goal for the rest of my karting career,” says Josh, who is also focussed on getting fit and losing some weight to help achieve good speeds “I want to get fit and get a bit skinnier so I can keep racing longer. I’m a little bit overweight and it tends to slow down the kart.”

Over Easter Josh was among Bay of Plenty karters competing at the nationals in Wellington, where he finished mid-field in his first junior class race with a Yamaha engine.

Little boy - large talent

Preening praying mantis Armed with a Nikon 60mm macro lens – and lots of patience – I captured this image in my garden last weekend.

After five minutes of gentle persuasion, this praying mantis stopped in bright sunlight and preened its formidable armoury.

At very close range, the lens was shooting at 1:1 and consequently allowed minimal depth of field.

Very careful focusing techniques were essential.

The young soccer, athletics and now swimming star’s talent is apparent in the large collection of medals and trophies lining his

bedroom – won through numerous sporting achievements since the ripe age of four.

Proud grandmother Margaret says Andre has been rivalling the Greerton Athletics Club’s 15-yearold members.

“He’s not just been beating the records; he’s absolutely been annihilating the records.

Margaret says Andre has won Athlete of the Year at the athletics club, a scholarship to a soccer camp and he ‘cleaned up’ at the recent prize giving.

Having only started the sport two years ago, Margaret can’t wait to see where Andre’s talent will take him in the future.

Women’s refuge changing faces After overseeing domestic violence programmes from afar for 10 years, the new manager at Tauranga Women’s Refuge is excited to help at the front line.

Now based at the refuge’s Greerton office, Angela Warren-Clark took up the role four weeks ago motivated to help on the ground after frustrations at not being able to see her direct impact in her regional Ministry of Justice role.

“This is my community that I particularly care about,” says Angela, who has been surprised by just how busy the refuge’s safe house has been, sheltering families since starting.

“I expected it would be busy, but not like

this. It’s been quite an eye-opener.” The refuge will soon begin running programmes to help children from families of domestic violence, after having its contract to run the programme confirmed this week.

A feijoa frenzy The flavour and fragrance of feijoa is unforgettable, and in this country the South American native has adapted well, and has many fans.

The complex flavour-notes and short season means that enthusiasts, who usually have a tree of their own, make jams, chutneys and relishes as fast as they drop off the tree as the fruit only lasts for a short time. The fruit is prolific and it seems such a pity to waste. I usually receive a bag of whop-

pers from the lady who parks her car on the front lawn – let’s hope she reads this before the season ends – because I don’t have a tree. New Zealand manufacturers are producing breakfast cereals, wine, beer, cider, vodka, confectionery and ice cream all in an attempt to satisfy demand for the feijoa flavour. But there is nothing quite the same as scooping the translucent flesh out of a freshly picked feijoa with a teaspoon.

There is a way to preserve the flavour of the fruit whole and that is to prepare a syrup and poach it slightly then bottle.

This week I have a simple syrup that you can make to keep your feijoa for those times when you need that flavour, whether in your winter crumbles or with your porridge.

Preserved feijoa Ingredients 2 kg feijoa 3 cups water 400g palm sugar 3 Tbsp clover honey ½ lemon zest 1 lime zest 2 tsp minced ginger 3 kaffir lime leaves ½ cup limoncello Method Prepare the feijoas by peeling them as thinly as possible.

Bring all the ingredients, except the limoncello, to the boil for five minutes. Slice feioa into thick slices.

Add the sliced fruit and the limoncello, and simmer for two to three minutes.

Carefully transfer the sliced feijoas to sterilised preserving jars with a slotted spoon.

Top up jars with the strained hot poaching liquid until overflowing and screw down while still hot.

When cold, test the seal by turning the jar upside down.

Wipe any excess syrup from the jars and store in pantry until required.

The flavour will develop with time but should taste awesome in a month.

No better time for Anzac biscuits Baking was always an exciting venture as a child.

I have many memories of ‘helping’ Mum make biscuits, cakes and slice.

Admittedly, my motives for helping were largely driven by the

reward of licking out the mixing bowl at the end - but I still think there is nothing quite like a traditional holiday recipe to make a special occasion - Christmas, Easter, Anzac Day - all the better.

With Anzac Day arriving next week there is no time like the present to whip up a batch of deli-

cious Anzac cookies.

Here’s a healthy-ish recipe to get you started - but remember, there are plenty of options out there, and you are free to dress these up or down as you like.

I like adding raisins for a bit of chewiness. Happy baking and eating!

Healthy Anzac treats Ingredients 1 cup oats 1 cup plain wholemeal flour 1 cup desiccated coconut 1/2 cup sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda 4 Tbsp golden syrup 1/2 cup canola oil 1 egg, lightly beaten Method Mix oats, flour, coconut and sugar in a large bowl and set aside.

In a separate bowl add baking soda, golden syrup, oil and the egg and whisk to combine.

Add this mix to the dry ingredients and stir together well.

Roll about a teaspoon-full of the mixture into 3cm balls.

Place these 4cm apart on two lined baking trays and flatten gently with a fork.

Bake the biscuits in a 160 degree Celsius over for 15 minutes, until golden.

Allow to cool on the trays

then store in an airtight container.

This recipe is dairy free, takes about 30 minutes on total and makes about 22 biscuits.

The most important meal

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day – that’s how the saying goes.

Fueling up on a good breakfast will kickstart your metabolism, give you energy and brain power through to lunch time, feed your body nutrients and render you less likely to snack on chocolate or morning tea treats.

Here are some healthy breakfast ideas: A good muesli with fresh fruit – avoid ones high in fat and added sugar.

Porridge – oats have many health benefits including improving immune system and reducing the risk of Type 2 diabetes. Just add fresh fruit and nuts rather than brown sugar and cream.

Birchur muesli: combine oats, grated apple, dried fruit, seeds, nuts, milk and yoghurt the night before and eat the next morning.

Try a fruity breakfast smoothie: make a smoothie and add some grains like quinoa or oats for more energy.

If you’re in a mad rush - grab a few pieces of fresh fruit and eat on the run.

Pets of the week

Looking a gift horse in the mouth Sometimes, the effects of negative publicity can have a consequence far beyond the weight that the opinion of the person generating that negativity deserves.

Not all strays have a happy ending – but thanks to the fast-thinking, caring actions of a Transfer Station staff member, these five kittens are alive and well.

Born to a stray mother in the dump, the now 12-week-old kittens were about to be crushed by a rubbish crusher when a staff member saw them and snatched them to safety.

Unfortunately, their mother may not have been so fortunate.

These gorgeous kittens are now in adoptive foster awaiting a safe and loving home.

Recently, former Councillor Greg Brownless has been the subject of public criticism

by Councillor Murray Guy. Greg and I have stayed in touch since he left council at the end of last term and in my opinion Greg was a worthy contributor to civic affairs.

Always pragmatic and applying common sense to the multitude of issues of the day, Greg was/is also an enormous benefactor to our community through his Legacy Trust arrangements. From where I sit, one reason Greg didn’t seek re-election was the behaviour of some of last term’s councillors. There were other reasons, no doubt, but I know the ongoing carping of a handful of councillors was very wearying. Tauranga City Council needed Greg more than Greg needed these people, so Greg moved on leaving the benefits of his Legacy Trust to continue Greg’s ongoing contribution to Tauranga.

The effect of criticism on benefactors without countering their comments can mean the loss of much-needed help. I’m not saying that this is the case here – in fact Greg will probably be mortified when he reads this – but something needs to be said to alert the vast majority of you out there in ratepayer land of the potential damage that can be done.

Loose-knit organisation

Take City Partners as another example of looking a gift horse in the mouth. Formed about nine years ago it’s a loose-knit organisation of firms, companies and individuals who do business with council. These people wish to put something back into the community and the good they do is wide, varied and rarely do they receive recognition beyond the effect on the beneficiary of their contribution. A few vocal naysayers have it that

these companies get preferential treatment in return from council. This is patent nonsense.

Even if council officers were of a mind to do so, the in-built audit and accounting mechanisms would catch them out very quickly. City Partners networking among themselves no doubt provides plenty of business opportunities and there is also the satisfaction of actually putting something worthwhile back into their community.

Disparaging comments that rear their ugly heads from time to time probably reflect more on those making the comments and their attitudes to our community. Some people can never get their heads around the fact that there are people who do things for other people with no expectation of return or reward.

TECT Park tour

This week some elected members from Rotorua, Tauranga and Western Bay had an extensive tour of TECT Park and the activities going on up there. Sited at the top of Pyes Pa Rd (to Rotorua) there is about 1700 ha of consented land for all sorts of noisy, dirty and outdoor activity ranging from walking to 4WD courses to model airplanes.

A joint council funded activity – TECT also provided capital – the basic land is leased to the various clubs and organisations for them to develop at their expense.

It is another unheralded success and what the clubs have done in the last year is credible. Reports from these organisations are that their memberships are growing quickly. If you have an interest in model aircraft, pistol shooting, rifle range shooting (deerstalkers), clay target shooting, climbing around in trees (Adrenalin Forest), equestrian, mountain biking, motocross, motor sport, and 4WD then TECT Park is where it’s at. TECT is also making ongoing contributions to park infrastructure and club amenities; and we

are encouraging Rotorua District Council to come on board and further assist in building up the park.

I attended graduation ceremonies at the University of Waikato this week. (No, no – only as a spectator!) Any doubts anyone has as to the benefits of such an institution to its community would be quickly annulled once you see what really happens. Tauranga’s offer to the university, of land in Durham St on favourable terms, will prove to be a significant boost to Tauranga in the years to come.

So, the future is looking positive for our city, despite the disproportionate amount of negative comment generated by a few in some media. Yes, we still need media scrutiny – and council’s rate-funded activities need to be continuously challenged but if rates are to be contained and controlled we have to be positive and stop looking gift horses in the mouth.

New CEO Garry Poole has started work at City Hall on Monday. We are pinning great hopes that Garry can get the new organisational structure up and running quickly.

To the staff ’s credit, they have managed to keep the organisation functioning despite the insecurity and un-sure nature created by the long drawn-out process.

Unfortunately, we have lost some staff we didn’t need to lose and that is to be regretted. I suspect that there will need to be some ongoing tweaking but, as noted last week, all staffing and organisational matters are the sole domain of the chief executive with absolutely no input from elected members.

Wasting money on non-core services Was I the only one that could see the Tauranga city council just continue to waste our money on non-core services and that they have built up debt of more than $400 million out of a rate base of 100,000 people. all council debt should be self funding and I think the mayor and most of the councilors would have no understanding of what this means.

A lot of people in Tauranga will buy shares in Mighty River Power, I ask these people would you buy shares in Tauranga council.

The answer would be ‘no’ but you all still vote these same people back in every three years.

We need a new council that focuses on what the people need and what the majority want!

like our city views and our phone number.

No one wants to ring them anyway. Twice as many people working for them as six years ago. Empire building and money wasting.

If this city got back to basics we could be the number one city in New Zealand.

Building a footpath at Pilot Bay will not bring any more people toTauranga where as investing in and working with the business people of this wonderful place could turn the CBD into a vibrant thriving area instead of the morgue that the council has created.

Mount Hot Pools: I have been trying to get the income and expenditure for the hot pools but have been advised that it is commercially sensitive. This is ratepayers and public money?

Apart from the millions spent last financial, I asked how do the appointment of CEO and managers get appointed? I would think that ideally jobs would be advertised and get the appropriate and suitably qualified people, not unqualified as of now.

The pools are still having problems.

It appears that your Council seems to create CEO’s and managers at every whim. This seems to attract great pay packages surely the local Tauranga City Council has the infrastructure to take care of. Now board members, chairman etc have been appointed to TCAL at a cost.

The pool is a marvelous facility strangled by overheads of which we ratepayers eventually have to pay.

I have been approached by several people professional who should know, to stand for your council. So watch this space. No more borrowing and no more rates increases.

Council’s fantasyland public-funded graffiti Recently reported is a proposal to paint the external walls of some CBD public buildings and if possible maybe some privately owned buildings well, the plan means that some buildings will be painted with images up to 15m high! The cost will be considerable for this including OSH compliance and most likely costly scaffolding, perhaps tens of thousands for each.

It’s said that it these buildings around the CBD is a “joint partnership” between Tauranga Chamber of Commerce, PriorityOne, Tourism BOP, Mainstreet, Creative Tauranga, the BOP Property Council, BOP Tertiary Partnership and TCC. Looking at this group all are funded one way or another

by TCC(rates) anyway so looking past all the

“smoke and Mirrors” about where the money is really coming from to pay for this extravagance is obvious isn’t it, TCC ratepayers.

Meanwhile a current Sunlive website Poll asks viewers ”What do you think should be a priority for Council funds?” Not spending and reducing TCC debt @48%, Roading and Infrastructure @27% and of the six options City Art is sixth (the lowest) @ barely 1%, so no guessing which one Councillors voted for.

Is this the behaviour of prudent and responsible leadership and governance for this city? Very likely not and shows again why changes in October-2013 are needed desperately.

Bail for child assault accused

A high-profile Tauranga businessman accused of seriously injuring a child has been remanded on bail. The man, who has name suppression, appeared in the Tauranga District Court on Wednesday for a case hearing.

He was further remanded on bail to reappear on May 30, but a court spokesperson says the date is subject to change.

The alleged offender is accused of assaulting an 11-year-old child at a Mount Maunganui property in November, 2012.

His lawyer Paul Mabey QC says his client denies the allegations and will defend the charges.

Court date for murder accused

Bay of Plenty man Thomas Edward Ray, 31, will appear in the High Court at Rotorua charged with murder.

Ray is accused of stabbing Gareth Lardell Kaipara in the neck during a fight earlier this year.

Detective Inspector Tim Anderson says police arrived at the Kawerau home around 8pm on January 10 to find Gareth fatally stabbed.

Ray appeared in the Whakatane District Court on Wednesday where he was remanded in custody until his callover date in the High Court at Rotorua on June 6.

Woman jailed in pitbull attack

A Rotorua woman is facing four months behind bars after her pitbull attacked a toddler ripping skin from the 18-month-old’s forehead.

Philomena Marcelle Matthews, 37, appeared in Rotorua District Court this week where she was sentenced to four months in jail by Judge James Weir.

The woman previously pleaded guilty to being the owner of a pitbull that attacked a toddler causing serious injuries to the child’s face, hands and chest.

Judge Weir sentenced Matthews to four months’ imprisonment and disqualified her from owning a dog for the next three years. Judge Weir also ordered for the pitbull to be destroyed.

Home detention for benefit fraud A Gate Pa woman convicted of benefit fraud after she stole more than $70,000 has been sentenced to five months’ home detention and 150 hours’ community work.

Kalolaine Feofa’aki Funaki, 24, appeared in Tauranga District Court for sentencing last week after pleading guilty to one charge of obtaining by deception using a document and seven counts of dishonestly using a document.

During sentencing, Judge Peter Spiller said stealing from the community was a serious incident.

The court heard how she lied about her marital status in order to receive the money.

Two people are dead following three serious crashes in the Bay of Plenty this week.

State Highway 2, between Katikati and Tauranga, near Apata, closed after a truck carrying bottles containing acetylene, LPG, oxygen and nitrogen crashed about 1.30am on Tuesday.

Emergency services dealt with the truck crash which closed the road for around six hours, says Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion.

In a separate incident, a woman in her 70s was killed following a crash between a moped and car at the intersection of Amohau Street and Ranolf Street in Rotorua about 6.30am.

Police are also investigating a crash which killed one person on State Highway 1, Putaruru.

Police say a car travelling south away from Putaruru crashed with a truck travelling north.

Public consultation to change NZ names?

Changing NZ names of everything?

The NZ Geographic Board have trumpeted a plan to change NZ names including the main islands of NZ: “North Island”(Te Ika-a-Maui), “South Island”(Te Waipounamu) these are really “userfriendly” names for locals and tourists?

The NZGB say the current names have not been “approved”? So now there is to be public consultation to change it all?

But the members of the committee (same types as the ‘Independent’ Constitutional Committee) present no reason to have any faith that there’s really to be any meaningful “consultation” before finalised.

NZ real history is a lot different, in 1840 a Royal Charter declared that the commonly called ‘Northern Island’, ‘Middle Island’ and ‘Stewart’s Island’, were officially designated to be known as: ‘New Ulster’, ‘New Munster’, and ‘New Leinster’”.

A further Royal Charter in 1846 stated that NZ was to be divided into two provinces: New Ulster and New Munster, the latter is everything south of the Patea River mouth including Stewart Island. The two

Rogers ‘deluded’ by Monckton Whilst usually enjoying reading Rogers Rabbits column it seemed to me that the paper’s editor was deluded by a visiting British peer (The Weekend Sun April 12).

Monckton can have his beliefs just like those who still believe that this world was created in a week about 6,000 years ago, but there’s an old saying “ugly facts can ruin a beautiful theory”.

Climate change is not a political issue and is not even a debate. It is science and Rabbit might learn a few scientific facts by watching next Sunday’s National Geographic program at 9.30PM on Sky TV or the online film to be released on Earth Day later this month (see www.thiniceclimate.org).

However, he could also ponder as to how the Peruvian Quelcaya icecap at 5670 metres above sea level and the largest tropical glacier in the world, has shrunk to the smallest it’s been for 6000 years with 1600 years of ice having

melted over the past 25 years and lakes appearing with “fresh” plants that must have been frozen for over 5000 years (Science April 4). The huge Himalayan glaciers feeding the Ganges are melting at an accelerating rate according to monitoring photos over the past 50 years with concerns that the Ganges could even cease to provide water for vast areas of the Indian subcontinent.

The well-monitored Alaskan and northern Canadian glaciers are now disappearing at an increasing rate. Even the Franz Josef glacier has retreated by 1 km according to photographic evidence.

The planet is doing something it hasn’t done for 12,000 years. The political issue may be what percentage of man’s polluting is causal and thus potentially remedial, but our grandchildren will experience the consequences. Unfortunately but predictably, the petrodollar buys a lot of political leverage.

Open letter to John Key Dear Prime Minister: I and many others, want an explanation as to your apparently official new name of our country as Aotearoa New Zealand.

History versus farce Well Alys Wicksteed, the local apostle for Maori MP’s Sharples and Tiria, have I got some bad news for you – Yes Maori were mostly not literate but Henry Williams was an expert in the Maori language certainly having the best interests of Maori at heart.

You seem to have conveniently overlooked the Littlewood draft treaty document that being Hobson’s final draft of the Treaty when translated into Maori and then if you correctly translate it back to English, it equates almost word for word with the Littlewood draft. Viola! They are in fact the same.

There is only one legitimate Treaty, the Maori version. Not some fanciful, subsequently ‘created’, after the event flowery Freeman interpretation that inexplicably found its way into the 1975 Waitangi Act and subsequent statutes Perhaps you should ponder this – Governor Hobson read out his final draft in English (Littewood), to the assembled chiefs followed by Henry Williams who read out the Maori translation version to them.

After considerable debate in which Williams assisted Maori the chiefs accepted the treaty terms and, the Maori version was signed at Waitangi.

The Maori chiefs knew exactly what they were signing. All the postulation since otherwise has no merit at all.

Littlewood’s a goneburger R.Paterson (April12) and Bruce Moon claim that the ‘official’ English version of the Treaty of Waitangi is false.

R.Paterson seems unaware that Bruce Moon is an unqualified amateur historian who has ignored inconvenient facts. Professional historian Claudia Orange quotes one of these inconvenient facts on page 260 of her book ‘The Treaty of Waitangi’.

She records that a copy of the ‘official’ English version of the Treaty was sent by Governor Hobson to his superior, Governor Gipps, in Sydney on 5-6 February 1840.

This ‘official’ English version was also signed by Governor Hobson and 45 Waikato chiefs and is now in the National Archives in Wellington. It is the ‘official’ English version used by the Waitangi Tribunal.

Bruce Moon has never disputed these facts but they completely destroy his claim that the ‘official’ English version is false.

The problem that R.Paterson and Bruce Moon have is that Governor Hobson himself chose to have two ‘official’ versions of the Treaty, Maori and English, that do not translate exactly.

Arguing about the Littlewood Treaty changes nothing. We are stuck with the two ‘official’ Treaties authorised by Governor Hobson in 1840.

Can we regain our democracy?

The anti-smacking bill, the proposed spy-catching legislation that invades our privacy, the bank bill that gives trading banks, and the government, the right to confiscate our savings; are all examples of the rushed legislation of the past couple of decades, which are destroying our normal democracy.

If we do not wake out of our sleep we will find ourselves and our children living in a dictatorship.

We have one ray of hope. It lies in our own “Joan of Arc” whose name is not Joan but Amy. Amy Brooke of Nelson, is fighting to bring in that form of democracy

that has operated in Switzerland for some considerable time, and which retains the absolute rights of the majority of Swiss citizens.

Amy’s book “100 days” relates how the 100 days system works.

In brief, legislation cannot come into effect for 100 days during which time, if sufficient citizens demand it, a binding referendum must be held.

This certainly would cause our politicians to pause and consider their actions. At present we have selfish, aggressive, minorities running the country for their own selfish ends, and certainly not fotr the good of the country.

So Kiwis, find out about “100 days” and get into action to save your country. There is also a website www.100 days.co.nz John Mills, Mt. Maunganui.

Do everything in our power to keep it that way The power-crazy kid in charge of the oligarchy of North Korea is threatening to nuke parts of the USA as punishment for the sanctions imposed by them.

I guess that his neighbour China is big and bossy enough to keep the kid in line but his threats do not make comfortable reading.

It appears that there are 24 embassies in Pyongyang and it has been suggested that the diplomats leave rather promptly. I guess those diplomats could tell us stories that would keep us awake at night. I am surprised that they even have embassies in a place like that

as it is certainly not a holiday destination.

The power of Kim Jong Un lies in the fact that his people know nothing of the rest of the world.

Thank heavens we live in a democracy, government by the people and for the people, free speech, the right to protest, government in which supreme power is invested in the people, and we must do everything in our power to keep it that way.

I cannot imagine a life as that lived by those unfortunate enough to live in North Korea!

Gun-shy reader shock

Friends of the Libraries are excited about the Council meeting on 22 April when the Library Task Force will be presenting two options to the elected members for Greerton Library extensions. With the Draft Annual Plan advising the already collected $1.8million development contributions will be spent on Greerton Library it appears that at last Greerton will get a library of a workable size.

Friends are looking forward to a library that opens out onto the Village Square and gets rid of the unwelcoming toilets by the current entrance.

Hopefully there will be a meeting room and spaces more suitable for use by book groups and the like plus the provision of all the services the three users of other branches enjoy. The leaky part of the building, currently housing the children’s and young people’s collections, must surely be being replaced.

Currently the Greerton Library is to be discussed at 3.15pm on Monday 22/04/2013 and Friends of the Libraries will be there.

We do hope that Greerton Library users and supporters will join us to show their support.

I was a bit shocked last week to find, falling out of my friendly local newspaper, a catalogue with over half its pages dedicated to the purchase of guns.

We are told that the staff cuts relate to middle management. The reality is that most middle managers spend half their time in the field frontline, this was very evident during the Rena crisis when these personnell came from around NZ to help us out locally.

So if there is to be cut backs, more alternative self funding sources have to

be considered. There is definitely real return on fallen giant rimu that are 500 - 700 yrs old which are 15 - 20 metres to the first branch x 2 metre diameter.

I am advised that If 50% of these giants are salvagable at $4,000 cubic metre there would be $50,000 wholesale value after costs.

It is good if the total log isn’t salvageable (usually stump end fungi rot) because more is left to biodegrade. If a policy was developed with strict controls, then tendering a pilot area to evaluate what the market thinks, without committment, is needed knowlege as a first step.

Tauranga’s regular talents keep city’s musical flame burning Whilst big gigs might steal the limelight it’s the regular activities of organisations like music clubs and societies that keep the musical flame burning on a week to week basis.

Acoustic Music Club recognised this. They used to be called the Tauranga Folk Club but the fact that many people turning up were playing acoustic instruments but not necessarily folk music led to them broadening their approach.

In Rotorua there are regular concerts and jam nights organised by the Bay of Plenty Blues Club. They were experiencing similar difficulties: many of the people turning up to jam were less interested in the blues per se than just having a jam. So Stevie Ray Vaughan tunes become Hendrix tunes, which become Credence tunes which become any rock tunes with a bluesy influence which become any rock tunes at all.

Muddy combo

They came up with a novel solution which other clubs could benefit from emulating. Instead of adding more rules to the jam session (“you Must play blues... etc”) they organised a competition with a few small prizes donated by local music shops. At jam night you could win a prize if you played a Muddy Waters song. If you played three Muddy Waters songs (three songs is the limit for jam nights)

Muddy Waters tunes in their repertoire which they will continue to play at other gigs thus spreading the music far and wide. Their plan is to repeat this with other famous blues artists. Good call.

(And we can be proud that the grand prize for the best take on a Muddy tune during the night went to Tauranga’s B-Side Band for a spirited rendition of “Tiger In My Tank”.)

One club here in town that has continually see-sawed between wild popularity and empty seats is the Jazz Club, which until recently held monthly meetings with two bands each time at the RSA in Greerton. After some months of poor attendance it has been decided to wind it up for the time being and, hopefully, relaunch it in a different format They’re having a special meeting this Sunday (April 21, 2.00pm) at the Bureta Park Motor Inn to discuss options for starting again. They have a good possible venue in Bureta Park itself but all those tricky bits like “do you stick with just jazz or broaden the musical base?” will need to be thrashed out.

I hope they get it sorted; the city needs its jazz club. Everyone is welcome on Sunday so this might be a perfect chance to meet a few new people and get involved.

Which is a shame because I was completely blown away by its gleeful mix of sex, violence and kitsch Kiwi culture.

It arrives with the same unselfconscious confidence and no-holds-barred attitude

Compliance comes across as a strange real-life variation of the famous Stanford prison experiment (also referenced on film as The Wave, The Experiment and others). Based on several true incidents, it takes place in a fast food outlet where the down-to-earth manager gets a call from someone claiming to be a police officer. She, as instructed, detains a young female staff member accused of theft. Then, on further command, the employee is searched, then stripsearched and subjected to increasing levels of humiliation. It makes for an extremely uncomfortable and alarming dissection of people’s natural subservience to authority. Played tensely and naturalistically it is disturbingly plausible.

With the Hispanic population of America on a continual rise and a significant number of the country now Spanish speakers, Ferrell has made a film in Spanish, a very funny deadpan parody of modern Mexican drug westerns, complete with phony sets, an on-screen apology from the second assistant director and Gael Garcia Bernal hamming it up as the drug kingpin Ferrell must battle to save the family ranch. A bizarre experiment, clearly destined for cult status.

Turns out that the pair are film-makers looking to expose the cult, which is paranoid, secretive and possibly, it is hinted, about to commit mass suicide. What follows is a tense drama, very well made, as they are slowly drawn into the mindset of the cult while evidence on either side piles up ambiguously as to whether this woman is real or a dangerous crazy.

Devilskin are coming to rock Brewers Hamilton metal band Devilskin will be rocking Brewers Bar on May 4 as they bring their New Zealand tour to Tauranga.

The band has been together for two and a half years and consists of 17-year-old Nic Martin playing on drums alongside his dad Paul Martin on bass, ‘The Nail’ on guitar and Jennie Skulander on vocals.

“We have explosive shows and Jennie is one of the hottest female vocalists in New Zealand,” says Paul.

The band has raised money for a

number of charities including the Ngaruawahia St John ambulance.

Devilskin is enjoying recent success of its songs ‘Little Pills’ and ‘Never Seen The Light’.

‘Little Pills’ charted at number 12 on the New Zealand singles chart and ‘Never Seen The Light’ (written about a friend’s suicide) charted at 17.

“The band wants the positive message of the song and video to help people cope with depression and suicide.”

Devilskin is coming to Tauranga on the back of sell-out shows in Hamilton, Napier and Christchurch.

Consider what is prayed here and that God hears every prayer!

Firstly, our nation’s leaders acknowledge their need of God’s guidance in all things.

Secondly, their declared intention is to conduct the affairs of parliament to the glory of God’s holy name. Thirdly, all of this they state is through Jesus Christ, who is referred to as ‘our Lord’.

If this is their avowed intention, how can they then

ignore God and His Word, which is truth? If they genuinely desire to conduct business on the basis of glorifying God’s holy name, how can they then even consider passing laws that blatantly ignore God’s Word and that stand in direct opposition to the things that God declares holy?
