The life changer During the seven days Tom Scott was in a coma in Rotorua Hospital, his family was twice told to expect him to die from his injuries.

“But as I have found out many times, you can’t kill a weed,” says Tom. He was injured

after the fire truck he was riding in, to a callout near Taupo, flipped and kept flipping, on a corner. It left him a paraplegic. “I’ve had plenty of luck, most of it bad,” he says with a grin.

But this weed has just kept growing stronger,

taller and certainly faster. And this week he was showing off his new wheels – a specially adapted Segway with big fat feet that enables Tom to go anywhere at about 20 km/h.

Considering it was titled the well-being budget, it seems ironically bereft of things likely to make us feel better, booting off with yet another fuel tax kick-in-the-guts.

Besides the fact it was leaked, (more holey than the Pope’s cheese grater) and was the laughing stock of Parliament before it was even delivered – the most entertaining blunder was the use of a stock photograph on the cover. It turned out to be a mother and daughter who’d packed up and run away from New Zealand for a better future in Australia. Clearly they could see more wellbeing across the Tasman.

The government couldn’t have found a less appropriate picture if they’d tried.

It’s given researchers at RR Headquarters the inspiration to advise Government on other potential budget document cover scenes.

Beggars demanding sex acts from an innocent woman in the Tauranga CBD. Passersby being followed to their cars and harassed, people being yelled at and other acts of intimidation and aggression.

These are some of the “horrific incidents” reported to Tauranga MP Simon Bridges by constituents since the recent introduction of a begging by-law, designed to deal with the problem.

“Whether it’s behaviour induced by drugs or alcohol, it’s serious,” says the MP. “Police need to enforce the begging ban bylaw,” says Simon and they haven’t been.

“Look, they will say, it’s not our job. But...”

From his office in the CBD council building, Mayor Greg Brownless has watched what appeared to be drug deals going on downstairs on Willow Street.

“Also people being harassed at ATMs and all sorts of other boorish behaviour – drug or alcohol-affected people generally making life unpleasant for others.”

Of course he calls the police. “When I do they will pop down when they can. Often they will, sometimes they won’t.”

The Weekend Sun put the issue to Western Bay of Plenty area police commander, Inspector Clifford Paxton.

In a brief written response, his office replied by saying the begging bylaw is not enforced by police.

Calls for service relating to begging, absent of any other criminal behaviour, will be referred to council.

Police confirm they will attend when there are clear

offences such as disorderly behaviour, intimidation or threats and urge anyone who experiences such behaviour to contact them.

The police attitude sits uncomfortably with the Mayor – crime and disorder in broad daylight, right under his nose, on his patch.

“The bylaw was our best effort,” he says. But while the council believed it had provided the tools to deal with the beggar problem, no one has picked them up and used them.

“Talk to some of the retailers,” says Mayor Brownless. “Police told them if the council passed a bylaw they could do something. Of course, we did but they can’t.”

Simon says police need “to take ownership of the begging ban.”

And he has the backing of the Mayor. “Horrific, appalling” says the Mayor to the MP’s litany of offending in the CBD. “There should be zero tolerance.”

Simon cites the broken windows programme in New York, in the 1990s, to back his call.

“If you want to get rid of the serious problem then you sweat the small stuff,” says the former crown prosecutor.

Broken windows was a metaphor for cracking down on begging, disorderly behaviour, public drinking, prostitution and unsolicited windscreen washing. And by dealing with the misdemeanours, police reduced felonies, or more serious crime by 40 per cent. And homicides by half.

Simon Bridges says everyone has faith in the police.

“But we need a safe CBD and I am calling on them to enforce the begging ban.”

Warm children

Humbled from the launch and success of ‘Warm Up The Streets’ in 2017, Stoney Creek and Curate Church have partnered again and aim to provide 3000 packs of Stoney Creek fleece clothing to kids in need.

Kids across Tauranga, Whakatane, Opotiki and Te Puke will receive their pack via low decile schools and partner organisations including Open Home Foundation, Ngatai Ranginui Iwi and Tauranga Police.

The hope is that the Bay of Plenty community will get behind the project and contribute what they can, resulting in 3000 fewer Kiwi kids being cold this winter.

Wrong tax code

Inland Revenue says 450,000 people have been paying the wrong rate of tax on their KiwiSaver accounts and other managed funds.

There will be tax bills coming in the post for many, with some running into at least the hundreds of dollars.

Inland Revenue spokeswoman Gay Cavill says an overhaul of the tax system in April meant Inland Revenue was now better able to see what rate of tax people should be paying on their KiwiSaver accounts and other investment savings.

Just over 120,000 letters have gone out so far.

Cruising free as the breeze He’s done it a million excruciating times since Sunday November 19, 1995 – reliving the Taupo fire truck accident that robbed him of the use of his legs and left him a paraplegic.

“Very fast, lots of rolling, lots of noise - bizarre,” remembers 57-year-old former professional firefighter Tom Scott.

“Then there was this instantaneous massive pain – I knew my back was broken.”

The door of the fire truck had flown open as the vehicle flipped on a corner on their way to a call-out. Then it slammed closed, trapping him between the door frame. He woke seven days later in Rotorua Hospital to the news he might never walk again.

“I already knew that – it didn’t worry me.”

And then, there he is today like Peter Fonda or Dennis Hopper out of ‘Easyrider’ – blasting down the Kulim Park beach front on his own custom built chopper, a Segway, the big black, expensive, quick and liberating Body Electric Max. And Pippy – a fluff ball with ears flapping readying for takeoff, on his lap.

“It’s not a wheelchair,” Tom insists. So we won’t call it a wheelchair. It’s a cross terrain transporter power chair. “It’s a mobility scooter, a destination vehicle for me, a life changer.”

It’s basically a Segway – but the chair, seat mechanism and electronics were developed by Body Electric in Wellington.

“Lean forward go forward, lean back go back.” And you steer with the tiller.

ACC funded and he reluctantly reveals it cost $30,000. “More than most cars,” he admits. But then, he says, there are $30,000 worth of benefits for a man deprived of many life’s benefits.

Off road, through rougher country, down the beach as fast as someone can run. Swift, tough and light.

“It means I can take my kids and grandkids to the beach.

“Rather than driving to a beach in a car and then organising a conventional chair, dismantling, storing, remantling, the physical demand of doing that and then doing it all again when I get home, I can ride the power chair to my destination, ride on the beach and then ride home again.”

For a man who can’t rely on his legs, he says the liberating effect is priceless. It could easily have been Peter Fonda that uttered this thought, but it’s the blurb for the Max - “No nonsense, get

It also means that while once upon a time he might not be bothered, now he wants to, he just gets up and goes at 20 km/h. “I go out for the sake of enjoying a beautiful day, and I can spend all day doing it.”

It’s become his vehicle of choice – 1,200 kilometres since he got the Max in February. His beloved ute has become redundant. “I have to start it up every couple of weeks just so the battery doesn’t go flat.”

And 1,200 kilometres is two tanks of gas in the ute – there’s money to be saved. “Tell me,” he says.

He also has some new state-of-the-art batteries that means life for Tom Scott extends past the local supermarket and café. “My life has been changed twice – first the Segway and then the new batteries. I have gone from 20 kilometres max’ to 60 kilometres max’.”

He will go to the gym in Hewletts Road – weights and cardio – then come home through Bayfair, Matapihi and the rail bridge. “And I will ride over to Welcome Bay every Saturday to watch my grandson play soccer.”

Easy to ride? Yes, when you are out in open spaces. “However one time I turned it on and ran straight into the till at a restaurant. There were six of those touch pads waiters use and I sent all of them sprawling.“ The waitress was

very understanding.

And then if someone tries to give him a hug, they can pull him forward and off balance. “And that forces me to go forward and over the feet.” So spare the hugs.

One of the most interesting and unexpected advantages is it puts Tom at bar leaner level. “In a conventional chair you are below someone’s eyeline.

“They are looking down at you and you are looking up. It affects communication. With the Max you are just about on eye level. Believe me it makes a difference.”

And people do want to talk to Easy Rider when he’s cruising – either about the Max or the fluff Hunter Wells ball. Or both.

They have a dream - a mega Centre for Ageing Well in Tauranga.

Age Concern Tauranga has a growing constituency and it wants those people to be well looked after.

Chair of the organisation Anna Bones wants to hear from all organisations that serve the needs of older people. She says if 10 organisations combine their resources and their rents, they would be able to create something special, with shared meeting rooms, recreational and conference facilities.

This week Age Concern inducted two new Goodwill Ambassadors – Robyn Paterson and Bill Holland – to further boost their profile.

Anna says a centre would allow agencies to run seminars and events, provide a gymnasium and space for exercise classes and a café for people to interact.

A purpose-built facility could provide smaller rooms for grief counselling and budget advice agencies, while down the hall people could be playing cards.

She wants to see it set up somewhere central, with good access and adjacent to public transport.

High housing costs, transport issues and health are all impacting on the older generation in the Bay of Plenty, says Age Concern manager Tanya Smith.

She says it is a “struggle” for those older people who are renting, with few housing options available.

“You are paying $500 a week and you are only receiving 300 and something.”

She would like to see building firms producing smaller properties, designed for older people.

They also encourage older people to share housing.

“You are sitting down having a meal with someone at the end of the day too.”

“It is a big transition for them to have other people coming into their environment.”

Living alone can have a negative effect on health.

“That’s a lot of energy going into saying I’ve got to cook for myself and you don’t eat well, so your wellbeing declines and you end up in hospital.”

So they would desperately like to create a Centre for Ageing Well. The only catch is they need someone with the resources and skills to drive such a collaborative project.

Tauranga Primary is turning into a Lego wonderland on Saturday.

Students and adults are piecing together a magnificent Lego Show, brick-by-brick.

A lot of organising has gone into the event, says school parent and Lego fan Jesse Ingham.

Last year, about 1600 people come through to check out the Lego creations.

Jesse himself is hard at work constructing pieces. It is enjoyable but very time consuming.

Jesse’s interest in Lego sparked when his son Theo was introduced to the plastic block phenomenon.

“There are some amazing creations being built, some of the Star Wars pieces are spectacular and incredible.

“A lot of the time we take up is sorting the Lego, and most of the time I am sorting if my tan Lego is in the right place, which makes the building process easier.”

The Lego show is in the Tauranga Primary school hall and it spills off into the library, where Toyworld Fraser Cove has a Lego store. Oh, and the staff room where the kids’ displays are.

“There will be second hand Lego for sale, from

people who are wanting to cut down,” says Jesse.

Lego show organiser Claire Wilde says the event draws new people into the school community.

“There are people coming from school coming to help and the people who are displaying the big sets don’t have links to the school, but they come together for the show.”

After the success of last year’s inaugural Lego show, Claire says a group of Lego fans formed a group, who will showcase their works on Saturday.

“As a spin-off from the show, a local Lego users’ group was formed, which was a positive from last year.

“That group has been going all year and now they are contributing again.”

As well as the Lego show, Tauranga Primary is hosting the weekly farmers’ market, so there is plenty going on at the school on Saturday.

The show takes place on Saturday, June 8 from 9am to 4pm in the school hall.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door.

Children aged three or under are free.

Raising the hemline Waipuna Hospice is challenging people to brave the cold and bare their legs.

Individuals, groups, schools and businesses can do the Shorts4Hospice fundraiser on June 21.

Waipuna Hospice Board and Senior Leadership Team will also be taking part in the fun, competing with each other to see who can raise the most funds for the cause.

Every dollar raised will result in each team member’s hemlines getting shorter.

The goal is to raise $8000. At every milestone ($4000, $6000 and $8000) the scissors come out and the trousers will get the snip.

The Hospice senior leadership team has a target of $4,000. Their trousers will get the snip at $2000, $3000, and $4000.

Waipuna Hospice director of marketing and fundraising Sasima Pearce says the hospice will care for roughly 1000 patients in 2019.

The organisation has about 820 volunteers working in all facets of hospice services.

Last year nurses made more than 9642 visits and over 19,800 phone calls to patients in the community.

“There are many people who have had the experience of losing a loved one. Shorts4Hospice is a light hearted way to raise the subject of end of life care and community involvement with a fun and easy participation activity.

“Funds raised from this event will go directly towards providing specialist medical care for patients living with a life limiting illness.

“Shorts4Hospice is a great way to see the brighter side and raise funds for the fantastic work that Waipuna Hospice does,” says Sasima.

The asphalt is there 24 hours a day, but traffic isn’t. A couple of weeks ago I wrote about a port congestion charge during rush hour as one way to ‘spread the load’ on the road and pay for upgrades. This week we look at some further ideas.

Better use of the black stuff on Hewletts Rd could be achieved by making the bus lane a ‘T3’ transit lane for vehicles with three or more passengers. Of the 300,000 vehicle movements on Hewletts Rd each week, all but a tiny fraction are single-occupancy

vehicles. T3 would enable a great queue jump during rush hour and encourage more cars off the road.

At present there are only 16 cars with three or more passengers travelling Hewletts Rd during peak hours!

A return by Regional Council to peak-time, point-to-point bus services is needed rather than the new system which requires many users to change buses at an interchange. The need to change buses has been one of the more criticised aspects of the new service. Park-and-ride services to

the suburbs are a must, provided they can be serviced by bus lanes.

For example, carparks on council land in Papamoa and at BayPark would be well served by a citybound bus lane along Maunganui Rd. It could slip into MacDonald St after the golf course and then connect with the Hewlett’s Rd bus lane. From BayPark to the bridge without traffic, now there’s a thought!

Get on your bike The new Paengaroa to Rotoiti cycle trail – a return trip of 62 kilometres – is now officially open. It’s a another important milestone in the national cycleway network and provides cyclists with more links to Bay of Plenty townships.

Completion of the trail provides a safe $180,000 escape from one of the most dangerous stretches of SH33 and gives cyclists the opportunity to take in the scenery of the countryside and coastline. It comprises 17 kilometres of sealed low traffic roads, 900m along SH33 between Maniatutu Road and Okere Road at Okere Falls, 10 kilometres of gravel on local roads and three kilometres of new trail through bush and pine forest. Start your ride at Paengaroa, or Ridge Rd Reserve carpark for a shorter ride.

Tricky time for new Mayor Tauranga City Council’s incumbent mayor Greg Brownless wants to continue with his vision to grow Tauranga under efficient management.

“Obviously I’ve struck quite a difficult time. I believe I’m doing well under the circumstances and things could always be better.”

The last term has been a rough ride with roading issues, the Phoenix car park redevelopment and the Bella Vista homes development to deal with.

“When I was first elected, the Phoenix carpark was forefront in many people’s minds. It was to be paid for from development contributions, but my solution was to purchase an older house in the area, remove the house and turn the property into a park.

“To take the car parks away, in my mind, was not sensible.”

The Bella Vista debacle originated prior to becoming mayor but it became public virtually as soon as he was elected.

“I had to face up to it and I did.

“Unfortunately Council signed a number of inspections off.

“With the new pragmatic CEO I feel we’ve got it pretty much sorted.”

The council’s new chief executive Marty Grenfell stepped into the role in September 2018 and initiated a re-evaluation of the Greerton roading, Kulim Park, Phoenix Park and the Mount Surf Club project.

Choosing Marty as the new CEO was a decision Greg is pleased with.

Other highlights of his term included opening the new waterfront area and seeing

the southern pipeline connected up across the harbour.

“This council has continued progress on the provision of wastewater and water infrastructure.”

Greg has a strong sense of financial prudence. “Some people think I’m a bit tight with council money.”

He’s in discussions with Government about much-needed roading projects.

“The only way Tauranga is going to get the roading and transport solutions is by working together. I’m strong on the fact that without transport, new housing areas can’t go ahead.”

Getting this right will lead to continued economic growth.

“We have the most efficient port in the country and we need a huge investment in the road and rail that supports it.”

He has a difference of opinion with some of the councillors over the 11 Mission St

property and rates increases.

“I prefer that council provide that land to The Elms Trust, the purpose for which the property was acquired in the first place.

“I think you need to look at efficiencies and the way council is run before simply looking to rates increases that are significant year-on-year.”

He believes that being mayor requires being an all-rounder. “To me the community is about more than business.

You can’t be totally devoid of business sense.

“There is plenty of room here still to run a more efficient and even more importantly helpful council organisation,” says Greg.

“The changes started half way through my term and I want to keep that going.

“We’re about a third of the way through the changes we’ve needed to make. If that can be kept up through the next term, then that would be great.”

Little ‘uns the winners

And the winner is… Hilary Price from Homes of Hope and Classic Builders’ Nathan Watkins.

Put a ring around number 25. It means Karyn Bradford is a winner.

So too are the kids at the child care centre she runs and the Homes of Hope which is an organisation providing protection, compassionate care and therapeutic support for children who have experienced trauma due to abuse and neglect.

So a whole bunch of little people stand to gain from the pint-sized Classic Builders charity project.

The building company recently down-sized its vision, building an ultimate kids’ playhouse to raffle off for charity. And, when the winner was drawn number 25 - it was revealed that many, not just one family of children, would get to enjoy the playhouse.

Early childhood teacher Karyn Bradford was the winner and the playhouse will be a star attraction at the child care centre she runs from home.

The Classic Builders charity project netted $4,000 for Homes of Hope.

Chief executive Hilary Price is delighted.

The dollars are much needed, she says, especially as Homes of Hope is renovating two homes.

“These resources will go to helping create homes that are beautiful, warm, family environments.”

Classic Builders’ Peter Cooney says having a hand in helping grow the Tauranga community brings a lot of pleasure.

“It’s always been a pillar of our business to give back to local charities and support and invest in local initiatives.”

Homes of Hope was “most certainly” a charity worthy of continued support, he says. The local charity works to provide safe, loving homes where brothers and sisters in care together can stay together.

It strives to place children in safe, strong families, in responsive communities, free from abuse, neglect and offending.

“All Kiwis deserve to feel the warmth, security and peace that home brings,” Peter says.

Cane and Kane vital to success Kiwi sports fans are hoping for a rare triple crown of World Cup titles in 2019 with the cricket, netball and rugby tournaments to be decided over the next few months.

The fortunes of our two men’s teams may very well depend on Black Caps captain and leading batsman Kane Williamson and All Blacks openside flanker Sam Cane.

They are so important to their teams’ chances of winning it is almost tempting fate to talk about it publicly.

Kane and Sam are local Bay of Plenty boys who have never forgotten where they come from. It’s as if the outstanding song Don’t Forget Your Roots by Dunedin band Six60 was all about them.

It is evident in every media interview they give. Just try getting Kane to talk up being rated the second best batsman in the world or Sam to admit he is the next Richie McCaw. I know as I have done it several times. What you get is not quite an icy stare but definitely

a look and then a shrug of the shoulders that says they are not comfortable talking about themselves.

Next question please.

It is all about the team and their contribution as part of a bigger picture.

That’s what they love talking about.

It is such a refreshing difference to the brashness and at times obvious arrogance that comes out of the Australian cricket camp.

Of the traits that Kane and Sam share there is another that defines the very good athletes from the great ones. Their work ethic is legendary. First to practise and last to finish doing extras, preferring to spend time at the gym or training one-on-one with a skills coach instead of playing golf is their norm.

Sometimes the best way to notice how important a player is in any given team is when they are not there.

Take the Chiefs without Sam. There is absolutely no coincidence that his return to contact at training has ushered in a change in attitude in defence. The pride or mana of the Chiefs has been built over several years on the

fierce mental toughness of the great loose forwards Liam Messam, Tanerau Latimer and Sam. It is not so much how hard they hit, attacking ball runners head-on that made the difference, although their hits would always feature in any ‘Smashed Em Bro’ sequence on the Crowd Goes Wild, but how quickly they get up to make the next tackle.

Sam has said to me on many occasions that tackling is all about heart, to get up time and time again to defend your line when your lungs are burning.

His defensive performance in the second half against the Crusaders in Suva last Saturday was staggering for his third game back from a broken neck.

Mountain of literary talent rises from the Bay Several local authors and illustrators have been shortlisted for the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults.

° e awards celebrate the contribution that children’s authors and illustrators make to ‘build national identity and cultural heritage’.

A total of 164 entries were received for the awards this year, with 29 books making the shortlist.

Ko Mauao te Maunga: Legend of Mauao, written by Debbie McCauley

and illustrated by Debbie Tipuna is shortlisted for the Elsie Lock Award for Non-Fiction. Slice of Heaven, written

by Des O’ Leary is shortlisted for Best First Book.

Ko Mauao te Maunga retells the traditional legend of Mauao and the bilingual book is suitable for people of all ages.

Debbie says she is over the moon with the book being shortlisted for the non-ÿ ction category.

“It’s wonderful to have a uniquely Tauranga story in the awards.

“It’s the heart of things here so it is lovely to see it so warmly received.”

She thinks the book was shortlisted because it ÿ lls a gap in the market through sharing Tauranga legends.

“Tauranga does not have many of its stories out there for children and we deserve our own stories.”

“If children who live here have a book about something they can walk on and take care of, that is so much more relevant for them than books set overseas.”

Slice of Heaven is a young adult novel which tells the story of a group of teenagers who attend a multi-cultural high school in South Auckland.

Des says he was inspired to write the novel after his experience teaching at Aorere College in South Auckland.

Unhealthy home brings greater rate of illness Poor quality housing, particularly cold and damp houses, is a signiÿ cant driver of hospitalisation among children.

° e diseases that poor quality housing have been linked to include asthma, respiratory infections, rheumatic fever, cardiovascular disease and respiratory illnesses and infections, including asthma, bronchiolitis, pneumonia,

bronchiectasis, tuberculosis.

Doctors report that illnesses related to poor quality housing are increasing in number and severity, with serious long-term consequences and disability. w° e rate of bronchiectasis in children, which is an wTh irreversible, life-threatening lung disease usually only seen in adults or in developing countries, has tripled in 15 years.

Sub-standard, high-cost housing at least doubles the risk of admittance to hospital for pneumonia, and is the most important risk factor for rheumatic fever and meningococcal disease.

M˛ori and Paciÿ Māori Pacific children are at signifi signiÿ cantly greater risk of hospitalisation and death from preventable housing related disease. Rates of hospitalisation for Māori M˛ori aged 15-29 with bronchiectasis were 14.5 times higher than for nonM˛ori, Paciÿ c, and Asian peoples.

Poverty is one of the most signiÿ cant determinants of poor health outcomes, and poor housing is a key component of poverty.

Solutions for ensuring all New Zealanders have access to healthy homes involve increasing supply,

building to high standards, increasing the social housing stock, as well as improving the built quality of existing dwellings, particularly rental properties. ° e Healthy Homes Standards which includes new requirements for insulation, will take e˝ ect from July 1 2021 onwards. Landlords must ensure that their rental properties have the right ceiling and under˙ oor insulation by July 1 2019.

These factors define a healthy home Housing is one of the key modifiable determinants of health. Inadequate housing can have farreaching consequences for health outcomes.

A healthy home is a core foundation for positive health and wellbeing.

A healthy home can be defined as one that is of good quality and habitable; well insulated, ventilated and fitted with good, reliable heating; not overcrowded; pest and contaminant free; safe - where

potential hazards are minimised, isolated and eliminated; clean and maintained.

Unhealthy homes are often cold, damp and mouldy due to inadequate insulation, heating and ventilation.

People who live in unhealthy homes have increased risk of contracting a range of serious and avoidable illnesses such as meningitis, rheumatic fever and pneumonia.

Unhealthy homes also heighten the risk of physical injury and can lead to depression and other forms of mental illness.

These health risks are often exacerbated by the fact that people who live in unhealthy homes are more likely to have to made trade-offs between housing costs and decent food, heating, health services and other necessities of life.

Those who are affected, including children, are often hospitalised and treated but they return home to the same conditions that caused the illness. The most vulnerable people, particularly children and older people, are among those who experience the worst effects of inadequate housing.

“Some people can save hundreds of dollars a year just by changing their electricity plan. Simple steps like turning o° a second fridge or putting draught stoppers around windows can cut electricity bills and make houses much warmer.

“Electricity in New Zealand is actually relatively cheap - the 11th cheapest in the developed world. But poor housing and a lack of insulation means we use a lot, resulting in high bills for some families over winter.

“EnergyMate is about helping families make the most of the money they spend on electricity.”

EnergyMate will initially be trialled across 150 families in South Auckland, Rotorua and Porirua.

Electricity retailers, lines companies, community organisations and the Government have partnered to launch EnergyMate, a free, in-home coaching service helping families at highest risk of energy hardship to reduce electricity costs and live in a warmer home, Electricity Retailers’ Association chief executive Cameron Burrows says.

“Some whānau wh˜nau can struggle to pay their power bills or keep their home warm because of poorly insulated housing, low incomes and a lack of energy literacy.

“We want all Kiwis to live in warm, dry homes with aff a° ordable energy costs.”

Toasty toes for adventures Winter doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors. There are plenty of great adventures to be had in winter, but make sure you dress accordingly.

Keeping your feet and toes warm is a priority if you plan on adventuring this winter.

But as long as you wear a good sock your toes should stay toasty no matter what you’re doing.

Look for socks that have thermal properties to keep your feet warm without wanting to scratch them due to itchy materials. The material also needs to be high quality and retain heat without retaining moisture.

Wet socks – even from sweating – will lead to cold, sore feet.

Most winter socks are a mix of synthetic materials and merino.

The synthetics are typically nylon and elastic to help the sock conform to your foot, and merino keeps your foot warm.

Avoid cotton socks at all costs – cotton absorbs huge amounts of moisture which is exactly what you don’t want in cold weather. Cotton also retains moisture for a longer period of time, which can lead to frostbite and hypothermia.

Many winter socks have extra padding on the feet, shins, ankles and top of the socks.

This helps with comfort and durability as winter socks are often used for winter sports.

It’s important to get socks that are the right height – there’s nothing worse than a gap for the cold air to sneak into. Consider what you will be wearing with your socks and buy socks with the right height.

As animals age, their ability to maintain health and vitality becomes limited and growing old gracefully can be a challenge!

Reunions due to moggy microchips If a missing cat is microchipped, this greatly increases the chance that they will be reunited with their family. All vet clinics and the SPCA will have microchip scanners and access to the New Zealand Companion Animal Registry database.

The microchips are very small, about the size of a grain of rice. They are inserted under the skin, between the cat’s shoulders.

Once in place, the chip can be scanned to detect its unique code, which is recorded on the national NZCAR database and links the cat to its owner’s contact details. Cats are often microchipped at the same time they are desexed, or when they have their final

kitten vaccination.

What about cats that are always kept indoors, or are elderly and do not leave the property?

They should definitely still be microchipped. Animal shelters often have well-meaning members of the public bringing in old cats that were found on the street. Usually these cats are owned, and often they are picked up from right outside their homes! If these cats aren’t microchipped, then finding the owners can be difficult, which is stressful for both cat and owner.

Indoor only cats may escape, so having them microchipped is still very important.

Getting your cat microchipped is quick, easy, and affordable.

If your cat is not microchipped, we recommend you contact your vet to arrange an appointment to get this done.

Pets get cold too It’s not just humans that feel winter’s chill.

Our furry and feathered friends also feel a chilly bite when the cooler weather sets in.

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to make sure your pets stay warm through winter.

One of the first things you might want to sort out is a warm bed. Cats love a warm spot to snooze, and a box lined with blankets will do the trick just fine. As a special treat, you can add a heat pad. Because of their tendency to find a warm spot, check things like tumble dryers and under cars before using them.

Outside dogs will benefit greatly from a warm, dry kennel in winter. A bed of straw or a heat pad is a great way to keep your outdoor dog cosy. Old or sick dogs would be best sleeping inside on a soft bed of blankets or a supported dog bed.

Smaller pets like birds, mice, guinea pigs and rabbits really feel the cold and depend on you to keep them toasty. plenty of fresh hay to snuggle in to.

Event organiser Delwyn Dyson says all funds raised at the event will go back to the Pyes Pa/ Tauriko Community.

The club invites all dog owners to bring their pets along to the event, encouraging them to use agility equipment provided by the Tauranga Dog Training Club.

Puppy farms can produce the wrong results The New Zealand Veterinary Association has issued advice to prospective dog owners in light of recent news media coverage highlighting animal health and welfare concerns regarding puppy farming.

This practice involves large numbers of puppies being bred in sub-standard facilities. Puppies

bred in this way may have significant and ongoing health issues, including behavioural issues that may arise from inadequate or inappropriate socialisation, not immediately obvious to prospective owners.

The NZVA recommends the public does not purchase animals sourced from puppy farms, and has developed some guidance to help the public avoid these animals, which are sometimes sold in pet stores and online.

“By choosing not to buy these animals the public can help to reduce market demand, which we hope will mean fewer puppies are bred in this way,” says NZVA chief veterinary officer Dr Helen Beattie.

Prospective pet owners can improve animal welfare standards by purchasing puppies from an ethical source. Buying animals from puppy farms helps to sustain this unethical business model.

More detail needed on mental health The Association of Counsellors is very keen to find out how the Budget’s $455 million for mental health workers, to service those with low-to-mid-level mental health problems, will be spent.

“At the moment we don’t know and neither does anyone else,” says president, Bev Weber.

“While the concept sounds fine, the devil’s in the detail.”

Bev is concerned the Budget spending on new mental health initiatives will see, by far, the lion’s share going towards the establishment of new frontline services “whatever they are,” she says.

The smallest percentage, by a long shot, goes towards strengthening existing services.

“We have got tried and true existing services that are doing a very good job, but they are terribly underfunded and under-resourced, and have been for years,” says Bev. “With appropriate funding and resourcing they could do the job they were set up to do in the first place and we wouldn’t need to reinvent the wheel.

“I’d hate to think this government is going to spend money that is desperately needed by existing services on the front line, right now, on setting up a whole new infrastructure and a bureaucracy to service it.

“That’s totally unnecessary; it will waste time and effort, and will divert much-needed funds away from the people who really need support now.

“New Zealanders with mental health and emotional wellness issues will continue to suffer in the meantime.”

Tips and advice on how to reduce levels of pain I have just got off the phone speaking with a client in his 70s. He had damaged his knees playing rugby and now has fairly advanced osteoarthritis in his knees.

We started him on a programme for his knees early in the year.

This involved reducing inflammation with some diet changes and adding my high chondroitin joint formula initially at a double dose delivering 1600mg of chondroitin, the same of glucosamine and 400mg of a 95 per cent Curcumin (from turmeric) extract.

High levels of chondroitin are important as this helps to stimulate cartilage production from specialised cells called chondrocytes.

He has been genuinely surprised by how much more comfortable he has been. The degeneration is still there but reducing joint inflammation and helping to improve remaining cartilage function can translate to real improvements.

When starting a joint programme I encourage people to regularly assess how they are progressing. A simple way is to do a regular assessment every couple of weeks by rating the pain and mobility out of 10.

Someone with an 8/10 rating may have a three-month goal to get to 5/10. Another good way to monitor is the amount of (any) pain relief/anti-inflammatory medication being used. Whatever system of assessment what we

are looking for is a reduction in pain and corresponding improvement in mobility.

While diet and supplements can make a huge difference the most important factor is time.

Today I created a programme for someone with serious degeneration in both wrists with one so severe that a specialist has recommended surgery. I stressed to her that the critical time period is not so much the first weeks but the 6-12 week time frame when I am sure she will notice a difference. We can base that judgement on another’s appearance, their actions, their words or even what they don’t say. Some of the reasons that we may judge… in order to feel safe, to feel that we belong, perhaps to unconsciously raise ourselves above others so we feel better about ourselves. A lot of our judgements are

subconscious. In order to move from that place of judgement ask yourself ‘what is it in me that makes it necessary to apply this judgement?’ Allow yourself to be curious rather than judgemental.

From this perspective we can look at the other person and their needs, and see things more through their eyes than our own judgemental ones.

Slow ‘em down

It is with interest to note several roundabouts were put in the Te Puke town centre not so long ago.

These, in most cases, have slowed down the traffic and made us more aware of pedestrians and other road users.

However the danger spot I see frequently is the Number 1 Road and Te Puke intersection. A traffic island was installed for right turning traffic and left turning traffic.

While this looks very

neat and tidy a roundabout needs to be installed in that spot.

Accidents occur because the intersection is on the brow of a hill and traffic on the Te Puke Highway does not slow down coming into the town from the south.

Roundabouts do slow down traffic and while some residents complain about them it does help with the flow of traffic.

In the May 31 edition of The Weekend Sun you published two articles about cycling in Tauranga. Both with a photo of a cyclist in dark clothes!

We all know cycling on public roads in New Zealand is very dangerous. Cycle paths are just an afterthought and not designed properly for cyclists, like they do in the Netherlands where cycle paths are completely separated from road users.

Wearing high visibility vests is recommended for cyclists, so they can be seen.

It would help if in future you publish images of cyclists with high visibility vests to educate cyclists. These vests are available from only $7.

Packhouse politics In reply to Richard Stewart, man are you a breath of fresh air. At last someone has told us how it is.

No infrastructure first, no, just utter greed. The same is happening in the kiwifruit industry. No thought for the guy doing the hard yakka under the vines. Packhouse politics as to who can or cannot pick. Rain and wet fruit. High fuel prices and tax rates. What can’t they see and how do they sleep at night? Solution: 30 hour minimum wage contracts and 10 per cent seasonal tax.

Zebra crossings Reading the article last week regards older drivers not being very good had me put pen to paper as they say for the first time.

Not sure what age the writer was, but I still drive and now walk a bit more and find ‘zebra crossings’ a real danger.

As a pensioner myself I find some young drivers just as bad.

The rules state: is it Illegal to drive over a zebra crossing?...

Putting things as simply as possible, if a pedestrian is waiting at the crossing they have right of way and the driver is obligated to stop. Failure to stop is a traffic violation and can result in a fine and/or points being put on the motorist’s licence.

The times I have seen drivers just drive pass without stopping.

I sometimes see the driver looking down and assume they are ‘texting’ on their phones!

Not looking at the crossing or anybody wishing to cross the road.

Obviously these ‘young’ drivers don’t know or don’t care about this rule.

Maybe one day they may get to a pension age (if they don’t die in a car accident first) and remember some of the basic road rules.

Dangerous cellphones In response to L Sorenson’s letter regarding older drivers [The Weekend Sun, May 31], I am a lady driver coming up to the age referred to [over 65]. I have yet to observe drivers in the older age category using their phones while driving but I do observe many young people and drivers up to the age referred to by him using their phones while driving. My experience on the roads in Tauranga, and I have lived here for 40-odd years, is that often drivers under the older age group referred to can be aggressive, drive too fast for our crowded conditions and bully other drivers by riding on their back bumper.

I have often made note that in crowded carparks such as supermarkets

and shopping centres younger drivers, often with children in their cars, drive far too fast.

I understand that older drivers may experience some nervousness driving on our roads due to the increase of traffic and the aggression that I have referred to, over the past few years. I believe, that distraction by cell phones is one of the greatest causes of accidents by young people that are very often fatal. I do agree that an annual test could be implemented for people over the age of 80 years.

Hold on ‘buddy’ Double standard L Sorenson may have a point but that point equally and probably more so applies to younger drivers who drive around Tauranga like lunatics.

Have a look at the road while you are driving round Bethlehem instead of looking for bad behaviour and you will notice a more than average number of black tyre marks on the road surface from wheelies. These are not made by older drivers.

Many times I have had close calls at the Moffatt Road roundabout and every case it has been a truck driver or a younger person steaming straight through the roundabout.

Further, drivers over a certain age do have a mini test when they apply for the licence renewal every two years. Doctors will ask questions regarding road signs etcetera and if one fails, a doctor has the right to apply to the police to have a patient’s licence uplifted.

To finish, buddy, you will reach the age you suggest sooner than you think.

Cr Murray-Benge has again criticised government ministers for poor performance [The Weekend Sunday, May 24]. Surely she is also guilty of a similar fault in not following up on the dangerous situation of pedestrians walking from the railway bridge to Kotuku Domain, following a petition to council several years ago.

Our local ladies group won’t be voting for her in the coming election because the dangers have markedly increased.

Not divisive I take issue with your report [page 10, May 31] regarding the Murray-Benge mayoralty candidacy.

The author makes reference to Don Brash being the founder of ‘divisive’ lobby group Hobson’s Choice.

Please explain to me how one can be ‘divisive’ when they’re endeavouring to achieve exactly the opposite, to bring harmony to all New Zealanders by treating everyone equally regardless of ethnicity or race.

So surely the apt description would be ‘inclusive’ and not ‘divisive’.

Too often media have unfairly lambasted Brash as racist. To the contrary, he’s a true patriot who’s undertaken the noble but thankless task of ensuring all Kiwis are treated fairly and equally, and like the majority of New Zealanders, believes all support mechanisms should be based on need and not race or ethnic grouping.

And then, let me remind you that the Creator and sustainer of all that exists has been revealed to us in story – which is the story that provides the tapestry from which our own individual stories and threads are made. It holds us.

It’s the fabric. It’s the backdrop. It’s the weave.

So, let’s remember that with each telling of our story (and our stories) and with each time we look ahead, we have the overwhelming privilege (and joy) of being able to tell and to show, what is the much greater story that we are from – including all its different colours and textures and complexity. And though in many different places it may be worn, it may

He went to his horrid death without making a fuss.

He died with an understanding and loving attitude toward those grievously wronging him, exclaiming “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do”. He died in stupendous agony, but instead of turning inward and letting this divert him from his loved one’s needs, he took thought for the welfare of his mother saying to his disciple “Behold your mother!” It is written this disciple indeed took her to his home.

Although in his suffering he cried out to God in anguish (and perhaps for help) “My God… why have

you forsaken me?”, he nevertheless kept faith in God to the end as his only source of comfort and help saying: “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit”. He also died at his post.

His last words included “it is finished”, not because his mortal life was over, but because he’d just completed his world-saving mission.

Finally, Jesus modelled dying with dignity by taking on the punishment he didn’t deserve for the sake of others. Like a person who confesses to a capital crime they didn’t commit so another can go free, he unselfishly took on himself the punishment for our sins, so the faithful can be set free from the wages of sin – death and have honour and dignity forever.

Rural Kiwi craziness My Husband’s Nuts, Detour Theatre’s latest show, is a fast-paced, unashamedly Kiwi, madcap comic romp.

Jack, Barbara’s husband and local farming legend, is missing on the family farm. When Jack finally returns home he is a paranoid nervous wreck and will not leave the house. He is convinced that he is a Japanese soldier holding out on an island after World War II. Barbara’s husband is nuts. With Jack due to give the opening speech at the local A and P Show this weekend, Barbara has to rely on three unlikely candidates to restore Jack’s mind: Charlie, her dimwitted daughter; Terry, the local alarm installer with aspirations for the secret service; and Jo, the veterinary doctor who is new in town and looking for her first client. What could possibly go wrong?

A quieter week, with strong W/SW winds for most of the week. They’d eased enough to get Sunday in, still with a residual slop from the SW though just enough to make the fishing tougher. They were there and feeding, just hard to catch, so the more experienced fishers had an advantage. Tarakihi can be a very subtle fish when feeding, snapper not so much, but if they’re not that hungry, they’re all tricky to catch.
