Funding on a roll

Forget about big jumps or wild tricks, the biggest challenge facing 15-yearold Katikati skater Jared Tinetti is raising $45,000 for a skate park upgrade.

Frustrated with the poor standard of Katikati’s aging skate bowl in Moore Park, Jared is leading a group of young local skaters determined to help redevelop it and make it larger and more challenging. While Jared accepts it may take at least two years to raise the money, he is not being put off by detractors and has already received council support. Read more on page 11.

You’d think the citizens would have more real topics to ponder than what the Johns said at morning tea.

Or whether the conversation should have been secretly recorded by the naughty journalist should reveal all.

While the country is in turmoil over the tea party, a real clanger has gone relatively un-noticed. Apparently John Banks, the Act candidate for Epsom, went on TV (The Nation) and announced that: “If we continue the bankrupt response of just paying young Polynesian, young Maori men, in South Auckland the dole to sit front of TV smoking marijuana and watch pornography and plan more drug offending and more burglaries then we are going to have them coming through our window, regardless if we live in Epsom or anywhere else.”

John, this is a PC country. You can’t say that. (You may be right, but you can’t say that!)

Selling for £5 each the ‘Stable Fragrance’ tins are said to let people take the “original Bavarian stable smell” home with them. The canned cow farts are the brainchild of designer Daniela Dorrer who says they would be good for people who have moved from the countryside to the city. She says the farts are captured by hanging industrial cotton wool in stables to adsorb the smell and this is then packaged in the aluminium containers. While early online interest suggests Dorrer could be onto a winner with this idea, other people say it stinks.

Dredging decision could be by Christmas

A decision on the Port of Tauranga expansion plans may be made before Christmas says the port’s property manager Tony Reynish.

The hearings resumed for two days this week, after a three-week hearing was adjourned in April.

The Environment Court hearing of the appeal against the port’s resource consent for port expansion plans is now completed.

“It’s not appropriate for us to make any comment while the court is contemplating its decision, but the court has indicated that it is possible that it will make its decision before Christmas,” says Tony.

He says the April hearing was adjourned to allow further infor-

mation to be provided on ship size. That information was heard earlier this week.

The Port of Tauranga wants to remove 15 million cubic metres of sand from harbour channels to enable the port to accommodate bigger ships.

The plan is to deepen the channels by up to 3.3 metres enabling the port to accommodate ships up to 14.5m draught at low water and with an overall length of 347m. Typically, these ships can carry up to 7000 TEUs (Twenty foot equivalent container units).

Dredging is expected to be carried out in stages to match market demand.

The challenge to the port expansion plans is from Te Rununga O Ngai Te Rangi Iwi which opposes the port’s plans on two main issues; preservation of

kaimoana and cultural.

The iwi has issues with the Central bank pipi bed, Te Pari Taha, which is part of a Mataitai Reserve and the Tanea Shelf.

The iwi don’t want boulders removed from the shelf, which is a natural marine habitat and is also the focus of the cultural issue.

“We see Mauao as an ancestor of ours and how it’s been described is having the Tanea boulder shelf removed would be like cutting the toes or toenails – whichever way you look at it, off our tipuna, our ancestor,” says an iwi spokesman Reon Tuanau.

This week about 200 iwi supporters walked across the Tauranga harbour bridge and gathered in a noisy protest outside the Armitage Hotel, where the hearing was held.

Courting international success Tauranga tennis talent is getting a boost with the chance to play on international competition standard courts now at Otumoetai Tennis Club.

Club committee member Ken Richards says strong interest is expected from beyond the club – predicting they could possibly attract international-level

players to prepare ahead of January’s ASB Classic or Heineken Open at Auckland’s Stanley St. Ken says as the first club in New Zealand with plexicushion courts – which are exactly the same as those at Stanley St or at the Australian Open – it is the obvious place for players to prepare ahead of tournaments.

“When they are practicing for a tournament the players only want to play on the same surface – so there could be opportunities there.”

Plexicushion is an advanced tennis surface comprising six layers of rubber underlay cushion on top of the base, before being finished with three layers of paint.

Ken says club members have been keen to play on the courts and predicts the primary beneficiaries will be the club’s premier players and juniors who are learning.

“It is a big bonus to have the premium surface available. It’s a big leap forward for the club and it’s great for the premier tennis players as well because it’s the optimum playing surface – the same as the big internationals.”

Club coach Jason Young says he is very excited about teaching on the surface because it’s a great surface for young players to learn on.

The resurfacing of four of the club’s 12 courts with plexicushion cost $230,000 – with $60,000 for the bitumen base and $130,000 for the special surface.

Half the cost was funded by grants from TECT, Lions Foundation, the New Zealand Community Trust and Infinity Foundation, with the rest raised by the club.

The courts are officially opened with a ceremony on Sunday at 3.15pm followed by the first official play between rising junior player Ashleigh Harvey and coach Jason Young.

Nothing diva about charity concert

Despite having just met each other half an hour before the photo shoot, Anna Hawkins and Sharon Cotter are laughing and joking around like old friends.

“We knew who each other was and I saw Anna in Miss Saigon, but we had never been properly introduced,” says Sharon.

The pair is combining their talents to perform for the Waipuna Hospice Christmas fundraiser in ‘Two Divas in Concert’ on December 4 at the Holy Trinity Church.

Although called divas for their high profile performances, there is nothing diva-like in their personalities as they joke around. With

their unique performance styles, Anna and Sharon will perform a fusion of classical, contemporary and musical theatre numbers with a few Christmas carols thrown in.

“We have yet to work out what we will be doing, but there will be a few duets as well as some solo performances of our own styles,” says Anna.

Anna and Sharon are both professional soprano’s who have a wealth of experience performing at high profile events, including concerts, festivals, shows, musicals and television and have enjoyed appearances with many philharmonic and symphony orchestras.

Waipuna Hospice fundraising manager Trish Rae says the concert is a nice way to end the year and as the two ‘divas’ have lent their talents, it guarantees every dollar goes towards the hospice.

An all American day of cars

Mustang owners, hot rodders, restorers and importers are preparing for the Bay of Plenty Mustang Owners’ Club’s biggest show of the year – the Extreme Auto Parts BOP All USA Day. The celebration of all American automobiles will fill the Wharepai Domain on November 20 with American cars of all ages, marques and styles as car enthusiasts show and tell.

Mustang club president Grant Robb is expecting cars from all over the central North Island to attend the popular event.

“That’s what draws a lot of them in,” says Grant.

“There aren’t many shows that cater for everything from the first cars built, to include the likes of commercial vehicles, utes and light trucks.

“We have more prizes than any other non-club specific activity.

There are nine judging events plus people’s choice, sponsor’s choice, best presented club; so there’s 30 prizes that get given out on the day.

“There’s no other show like it in the North Island or South Island that I’m aware of that does anything like it.”

The All American Day is the biggest show of the year for hosts the Bay of Plenty Mustang Owners’ Club.

They are polishing up their vehicles in hope of repeating their success at the National Mustang Convention held in Invercargill during Labour Weekend.

“We did pretty damn well actually, brought home seven awards from the eight cars that went down,” says Grant.

While Grant’s not sure exactly how many cars are entering, the trade spots are filling.

“We have a lot trade sites, a lot more this year.

“I’ve had people ringing me from all over the place wanting to come in.

“We try to give people exclusivity, so whoever’s coming in won’t have competition in whatever they are dealing in.”

They include the Farmer Auto Group which is bringing in some of their new American vehicles and an importer of second hand Mustangs and other classic cars from the US, plus clothing and memorabilia.

“It’s all car related stuff.”

The day starts at 8am and is open to the public from 10am with prizegiving at 2pm. If it rains the show will be in the Spring Street car parking building.

The Mount’s Mr November Mount Maunganui fire-fighter Derryn Davidson has been getting a good ribbing lately.

Mount Maunganui fire-fighter Derryn Davidson says appearing in the calendar helped push him outside his comfort zone.

After-all he has peeled off some of his uniform for the annual fireman’s calendar.

Derryn, who lives at the Mount, but commutes to work at the Rotorua station, is not the typical person you would expect to star in the annual beefcake fundraising calendar.

He describes himself as shy, but was keen to step up to the mark when his friends started encouraging him.

“It was a bit of a personal challenge. It was out of my comfort zone.

“It’s probably helped me with my confidence and made me realise I can push myself more.”

Derryn says part of the motivation was to support the fight against child cancer.

“I am definitely getting heaps of stick – it’s just good old-fashioned taking the mickey, exactly what you’d expect.”

For the last 22 years the men’s calendar has raised funds for the Child Cancer Foundation and for the New Zealand Firefighters Sport Foundation to attend the World Firefighter Games.

This year, the first woman firefighters calendar has also been published. Tauranga fire-fighter Shane Baker – who is selling the calendars in the Bay of Plenty region – has been surprised with sales of the new calendar – with one sold for every two men’s copies.

Protesting over beach driving access The Tauranga City Council is going to be policing the use of vehicles on the beach between Papamoa and the Kaituna Cut. Beach fishers who pay $30 a year for the privilege of being able to drive quad bikes along the beach to the fishing grounds near the Kaituna Cut, petitioned the city council this week.

They are complaining about increasing numbers of non registered vehicles driving along the approximate six kilometres of beach.

The fishers complain they are out numbered by illegal beach users and they want the council to do something about it.

They say large four wheel drive utes are driving from the boat ramp to the river mouth. Two wheel bikes are racing through the adjacent sand dunes and only about a quarter of the quad bikes turning up at the river mouth are registered.

ing their bikes have no objections to the fee if it is policed,” say petitioners.

Their concern is that without policing or control there will be a serious accident on the beach, with the law abiding fishermen losing their access privilege as a result.

The council is directing staff to undertake some policing and monitoring of the situation.

A motion to rescind the registration requirement was lost. A suggestion to make beach wardens of some of the fishers was also not taken up.

Designing a way out for Indian sex trade workers Designing t-shirts on the outskirts of Kolkata’s red light district is not what Tauranga student Alanna Watchman had initially planned for the third year of her textile degree.

The 20-year-old AUT fashion and design student, however, is taking a year off her studies to volunteer with the non-profit organisation Freeset in India.

Freeset is a fair trade business based in Sonagacchi, the biggest red light district in the world. It designs and sells organic t-shirts and jute bags, helping to free Indian woman from prostitution by providing them with reliable jobs and education.

While in India, Alanna will be living in an apartment on the edge of Sonagacchi at a cost of $35 a week.

“I will have to be very cautious because of the area I am staying in.”

Alanna needs to raise $10,000 to $12,000 to fund her trip to India. This includes flights, accommodation, visas and food for the entire 12 months of her stay.

“So far I have saved $4000, but it has been really difficult to find work in Tauranga for the summer to raise the rest.

“I am hoping to run some fundraising events during summer to help raise the money.”

The family focus of Christmas and the holiday period can make it a difficult time for those living alone, but there is a course offering help.

Surviving the Holidays programme organiser Kathryn Michel says the period can be “hugely stressful and emotionally depressing” for those who cannot celebrate with family.

Kathryn says the key to avoiding this is planning ahead.

Her two-hour course is aimed at those who are divorced, separated or widowed and goes over some strategies people can take to make the period more enjoyable.

Kathyrn say the most important thing to do is to prepare ahead so they have plans with others – both on Christmas Day and during the holiday period.

“Because they are meeting others in a similar situation quite often some of them organise to do things together.”

Kathyrn says Christmas Day is

particularly stressful because it is a traditional family time, but she says it could also be a difficult time over the general holiday period because normal routines are broken.

“Groups close and all the normal routine goes and often their friends are away on holiday or spending time with their family.”

Registrations sought for musicians Registrations are now open for talented and aspiring musicians in the Bay’s first ‘Spirit of Music’ Christmas Music Festival, taking place Downtown Tauranga during December.

Organiser Sally Cooke says the festival, organised by the Goddards Shopping Centre and Mainstreet Tauranga, in association with The Weekend Sun, provides an opportunity to showcase emerging young performers with some great prizes up for grabs.

“We wanted to stage a music festival to bring the spirit of Christmas to the

streets of Downtown Tauranga and showcase the Bay’s emerging talent,” says Sally.

“There’s no age limit, everyone who takes part will receive a goodie bag and there’ll be the chance for the public to vote for their favourite performers.

“From this voting, we will have a grand final performance in front of a panel of celebrity judges who will award first, second and third place prizes.”

The people’s choice section of the festival takes place on the weekends of December 10 and 11 and 17 and 18 with the winners from the

people’s choice section moving on to the grand final performance on Tuesday, December 20 in the Goddards Shopping Centre.

“We will have one performance site set up in the Goddards Shopping Centre and the other site in Red Square beside the giant Christmas tree.

“Each Saturday and Sunday between 11am and 1pm we invite the public to come along, have a listen and vote for their favourite performers.

“The public are also in to win a fabulous Christmas Hamper, compliments of The Weekend Sun, simply by placing a vote.”

Radio operators wanted by Coastguard Are you interested in helping to look after the boaties on the water?

Tauranga Volunteer Coastguard provides a 24/7, 365 day marine radio watch over the local area, along with the assistance of their colleagues at Auckland Coastguard.

The coastguard is currently looking for some new radio operators to join their team.

The operation is run out of the headquarters at Sulphur Point. It consists of a three shift per day

roster, from 6.30am to 9pm, with the overnight service being coordinated out of the Marine Rescue Centre in Auckland.

Full training and mentoring is given and although previous experience is useful, it is by no means necessary. All that is required is an enthusiasm to learn and be part of a great team of volunteers, giving a few hours per month to suit your own availability.

The Weekend Sun Invited guests and media got a first hand look at the new adventure park.

‘It doesn’t look that hard’, I thought, naively looking up through the ropes, wires and logs that make up the new obstacle course at TECT All Terrain Park.

Adrenalin Forest features six courses (after the summer at least two more are scheduled to be built) of obstacle courses, flying foxes and climbing challenges all suspended between the tress, with the highest heights reaching 18m off the ground.

Managing director Jean Caillabet gave us a brief safety talk, highlighting the dos and don’ts of navigating the course. Key point: Always ensure you are attached to the safety line. At a metre off the ground on the practise course, I was feeling pretty confident that I could dominate this course quickly and easily. Three hours to do it all?

I don’t need all that time.

And then we were left to our own devices, clambering up the ropes, swinging down the flying foxes and somehow making our way between trees. Stage one and two were a great way to prepare. With 12 and 13 challenges in each respectively and reaching a maximum height of 6m, it was good fun without too much of a scare.

One particular challenge I struggled with was lying on my back and sliding through tin barrels suspended by nothing more than a wire. Let’s just say, it got my heart racing.

Another personal highlight (and heart racer) was acting like a fly caught in a web. Throwing yourself across on a rope, you have to swing over and latch onto a rope web and clamber along to the platform. I had a minor panic of ‘mind over matter’, the fear of slipping and falling seeming inevitable – despite being safely secured on the wire.

Stage three was a different story.

Things amped up a notch and I am sure the Adrenalin Forest team (who watch you closely to ensure you are safe) had a good laugh at my girly cries from above the trees.

These obstacles required a lot of arm strength, agility and a bit of balance. A personal favourite was the snowboard (sliding on a snowboard between two trees) and my fear

factor was on the zig-zag – a zig-zag of logs suspended by nothing more than rope, making it very difficult to get across. My arms got a decent work out as I clung on for dear life.

I’ll be honest, after two and a half hours of clambering, shrieking and trying to overcome my fear so I wasn’t officially the first person rescued from the Bay of Plenty Adrenalin Forest, I only made it three obstacles in to stage four. The idea of jumping from platform to platform in mid air was too much for one afternoon, but I can’t wait to come back for more.

Totally safe, absolutely fun and definitely heart-wrenching Adrenalin Forest is the next big adventure attraction in the Bay of Plenty.

Skating ahead for park revamp Problems with Katikati’s aging skate park have prompted a fundraising campaign by the area’s youth to replace the park with an improved area to skate in Moore Park.

Leading the charge is 15-year-old Jared Tinetti, whose efforts helped score a recent major milestone with a Western Bay of Plenty Council pledge to cover half of the $100,000 budget if the group can raise the other $50,000.

Jared says the news was a boost to the campaign and follows a $5000 grant from the community board – leaving them with less than $45,000 to raise.

He says there is often a queue of 20 skaters waiting to use the park because the design and size means only one person can use it at a time. Jared believes a redesign will allow many more to use it and make it more interesting to skate.

“It is in a very worn out condition and outdated. It’s not good enough to be learning on.”

Jared, who uses the skate park every weekend and

some days after school, wants the new park to be in “street style” with ledges, hand rails and stair steps for learning tricks to make it more challenging and interesting for the skaters.

He estimates it will take two-three years to raise the money, with members meeting weekly to plan fundraising activities. Currently they are selling tickets for a grocery hamper – on display at Village Hairdressers – and are planning a sausage sizzle at the next skate competition on December 3.

Jared has been getting adult support for the project from his mother Linda Tinetti and Katkati’s Surf, Skate, Snow shop owner Peter Till, who has been helping with advice and providing the grocery hamper to raffle. Peter is also encouraging them to seek funding from other community grants.

‘The graduate’: new friends and new skills Wednesday was graduation for my puppy class and my happy little classmates at Cherrywood.

Despite me being absent the previous week (if a dog skips school, is he wagging?) I still managed to cram (the tucker that is) and pass.

Puppy class is the only time that the excuse “the dog ate my homework” is allowable.

The best thing about puppy class is the free time to maraud with the other puppies for a bit of socialising.

For Charlie, the little hairy guy, that meant climbing on board and practising things that puppies shouldn’t know about yet. Charlie also won the prize for best tricks. Not only could he sit, stay, lie down and roll over, but also spun a few very cool donuts. He can do so many tricks, I wouldn’t be surprised if after the class he changed the car tyre, drove his owners home and made them a cup of tea.

George the yorkie was all about business and managed to beat me to

checking the food bowls on the shop shelf, just in case they contained anything edible apart from the barcode.

We had a chat early on about his pink collar, a penchant for cross dressing, but some guys are man enough to wear anything.

Molly was the good-time girl of the class and always up for a bit of rough and tumble. An older woman, this girl knows how to party.

The little French bulldog Phoebe was the darling of the class. We didn’t talk much about the rugby though. We missed Zeba on the last night, but hope she’s doing well.

That girl sure has some energy.

Made me even feel tired. But that’s puppy enthusiasm for you.

Our thanks to Katharine for teaching everyone, pups and owners, so much in a few weeks. Thanks especially for her treats. She knows the way to a young pup’s heart and mind. - Flo.

Creating ‘Green jobs’ by investing in conservation Every election, there is much talk about jobs. After the election, the talk and promises seem to fade away.

Well, I give the politicians the benefit of the doubt – I have no doubt both that they mean to deliver and that they do try. After all, what better way to ensure re-election than to succeed on job creation.

But somehow, economic realities always get in the way.

The Green Party has identified a new

approach to the problem of job creation. It talks of ‘Green jobs’. In general terms, these are jobs that re-direct our spending away from consumerism and resource exploitation and towards investment in conservation and

resilience. Specifically, for the next few years, the Greens propose that we invest in renewable energy.

The benefits go far beyond job creation, as they also address issues such as global warming, protecting our ‘clean and green’ brand and keeping our environment healthy.

Here is the rub. If we simply re-direct spending, then job losses could match job gains, resulting in a neutral job balance sheet. This point frequently comes up when Green policy is under attack.

Taking a looking at SmartGrowth: the growth strategy

Reading my papers for an upcoming SmartGrowth meeting, I reflected what a critical piece of work this is for us here in the Western Bay of Plenty.

SmartGrowth is a long-term growth management strategy which integrates planning for population growth with land use and transport planning. It was developed collaboratively through a partnership between Tauranga City Council, Western Bay District Council, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council and tangata whenua. While it has had its challenges, it has delivered huge dividends since it was first developed in 2004.

Its value has been recognised by central government and now this planning process

– renamed spatial planning – has been made mandatory for Auckland and may be rolled out across the country on a regional basis.

A lot has changed in the Western Bay since SmartGrowth was developed.

There have been many positives, for example, our transport infrastructure has been greatly enhanced.

But we are facing significant headwinds.

The fun of the fair returns Community is being celebrated in Katikati next weekend with the return of the annual St Peter’s Anglican Church Fair.

St Peter’s Vicar Brendan Gibbs says the fair is an important Katikati tradition that he estimates has been running for more

than 100 years. He says the fair continues to be a popular community event offering something for everyone.

Brendan says the church welcomes donations of goods for the fair and encourages people to drop them off at the church.

“The white elephant is always very popular – with lots of bargains to be had.

“We always have a big queue waiting before the fair opens keen to get in first.”

Normally the fair raises about $10,000 for church projects and operating costs. The funds are not earmarked for any specific projects this year. The fair is on Saturday, November 19 from 8.30am till noon.

A new all-in-one centre is now open in Omokoroa, marking a four year project to bring services and facilities closer to residents.

The new Omokoroa Medical Centre features the new clinic, the Omokoroa Pharmacy, Vetcare Omokoroa, Omokoroa Dental Practice and The Omokoroa Market – creating a mini retail and services hub right in the heart of Omokoroa.

Building of the $2 million centre began in August last year. The 4700Sqm block of land was purchased after a lengthy process to find the perfect location to service Omokoroa residents.

The medical centre features a large parking space, new spacious rooms and waiting area, extended consultation and treatment rooms for both doctors and nurses.

Existing GP Alistair Raiman says the feedback since the centre’s grand opening at the start of November has been “very positive”.

“Everyone is saying it is a wonderful new building.”

Alistair, originally from the United Kingdom, has been with the practice for two and half years. He is joined by fellow GP Murray Smith who has been practicing in Omokoroa for nearly 16 years.

Both have a focus in general practices and family medicine, with Alistair’s special interest in sports medicine and acupuncture and Murray has an interest in paediatrics. GP’s Sarah Chapple and Virginia McGowan round out the four experienced doctors at the centre, as well as two practice nurses, two reception staff and a practice manager.

The new centre is now open at 170 Omokoroa Road, opposite Omokoroa hot pools.

Beach riding, it’s the wild west out there At projects and monitoring committee this week elected members received a petition from quad bike drivers (ATV) registered to drive on Papamoa Beach.

The beach is legally a public road so any vehicle using it should also have a WOF and rego. Good luck!

Prior to the council beach registration system many considered the beach like the wild west.

Since beach registration of ATV users ($30 fee to council), numbers reduced significantly.

But since council’s policy of enforcement-only-uponcomplaint began, non-registered ATV use has increased again resulting in this petition seeking enforcement.

Police do not include enforcement of beach traffic as part of their normal duties and by the time a council officer reacts to a complaint, the perpetrator is gone.

Staff will liaise with police and do a ‘sting’ at random.

Once again, it’s a case of some ruining it for others.

Inevitably there will be a serious incident resulting in all users being banned. Motorbikes are also a concern.

Council doesn’t want to be a kill joy (no pun intended) here, but it seems that as population increases, former freedoms are slowly and sadly inevitably curtailed thanks to the activities of an irresponsible minority.

Murray Guy tried to have the $30 fee removed and allow open slather back on the beach and failed 8-3.

Mayor Stuart Crosby commented that ‘as a poacher turned gamekeeper’ from his younger days, a suggestion that beach wardens be empowered wouldn’t work.

There is just too much aggro around these days.

Road projects in the works

In open forum, Murray Guy raised issues of timeliness of staff responses to elected members queries. I have noticed tardiness in recent months too.

In response, elected members were told staff resourcing of the Rena incident was the reason for these delays.

Plans taking up time

Three year/Ten Year Plan meetings occupied three full days this week.

Before we got into this, Mayor Stuart Crosby made presentations to city planner Andy Ralph acknowledging his recent receipt of an award from his profession.

The three year/Ten Year Plan discussion is underway and council CEO Ken Paterson opened it with this insight: New Zealanders were spending $1.14 for every $1 earned before the economic downturn, he said. Now it was 99c for every $1.

Proposed capital expenditure, which drives council’s borrowing, was down $36 million as a consequence of elected member initiatives from the current three year/ Ten Year Plan. Route K debt is still included in the mix.

Interest charges on city debt are $20.3 million a year resulting in 14c in the dollar going on debt servicing.

Council/ratepayers had an ongoing exposure to the risk of rising interest rates he told us.

(I note that for the next three years there was no such increase proposed in the budgets.)

With debt to revenue ratios sitting at around 244 per cent of a 250 per cent limit, set by credit rating agency Standard and Poors (yes, the same company that erroneously released a downgrade of France’s credit rating), Tauranga only had a buffer of around $9 million for an unforeseen disaster.

At this meeting, all the right noises were made by every elected member; restraint, control, no extra spending, sell assets, repay debt. Great!

Music to my ears, in fact Bill Grainger commented we were all singing from the same song sheet.

Whether or not we will all remain in tune remains to be seen as individual wheelbarrows and minority interest pressures impact on individual elected members.

For the next year proposed indications are for an around 5.7 per cent gross rate increase and allowing for growth of one per cent and inflation at 2.3 per cent seems, at first glance a target to aim to cut down considering the 10.1 per cent increase ratepayers experienced this year.

In a presentation on Tauranga roading from NZTA, they reported 16 fatalities in the year to date on the roads, down from 37 in the same period last year.

They also stated how work is progressing on Bayfair/ Girven Road roundabout solutions.

It’s not as simple as ‘grade separation’ (flyovers) we were told because of implications and complications at Te Maunga roundabout.

In March next year there is a public information/consultation day on proposals; likewise for Elizabeth Street/ Takitimu Drive roundabout holdups.

The Northern Arterial motorway, now known as Northern Link, designed to bypass Bethlehem and join State Highway 2 at Te Puna, is under investigation.

Don’t hold your breath for this one, there is no funding on the horizon so it is unlikely to materialise in the next 20 years, but four-laning Bethlehem to Route J is likely.

No details, but I would surmise that some of the changes he would be seeking would be different to mine!

Recognition also to John Payne, who runs the environmental compliance section.

His work around animal services and dog control is nationally recognised.

John has done sterling work in bringing this activity into the 21st century.

I couldn’t believe the barbarity of dog control when I first got on council and I tried hard to get things changed.

Some of it was so inhumane and gross I won’t record what went on, but it’s all changed now and thanks to John for his significant contribution.

For Greerton butcher David Pinkerton, producing the best small goods is all about following tradition without any shortcuts.

After following a tried and true recipe for his black pudding for the last five years, David has built up a top reputation that has been confirmed with a gold medal at the national sausage competition.

The success follows a bronze two years ago.

Greerton Quality Meats

To get the top honours this year, the owner of Greerton Quality Meat says “we tweaked it a little bit”.

When word got around about his win at the Devro New Zealand Sausage Competition, he quickly sold out of black pudding so he is making more this week.

He already sends his black pudding to customers beyond the Western Bay of Plenty.

“We make it properly – using only the best ingredients. It’s got to be made right and cooked right. It makes a huge difference with the finished product.

“Because it’s black, a lot of people think you can put all sorts of rubbish in it and disguise it, but if you put rubbish in it goes mushy in the middle.”

As a traditional butcher David is proud to say he makes or processes 90 per cent of the meat products in his shop – including various other sausages.

Since getting involved in the competition three years ago, he has only entered his black pudding, but plans to enter more next year.

Brookfield New World also did well in the annual sausage awards, winning two gold medals and two bronzes.

Supporting community from the rubble Rise Up Tauranga coordinator Rosalie Crawford is expecting a surge in new arrivals from Christchurch next month.

This week, she farewells Rachelle McKeown.

After laying the welcome mat to Christchurch ‘expat’ residents following the February earthquake, Greerton is saying goodbye to top visitor Rachelle McKeown who is returning south.

Rise Up Tauranga coordinator Rosalie Crawford, who has overseen the programme, says Greerton has been particularly welcoming to the newcomers – thanks to its close-knit community, support from Mainstreet Greerton and the many agencies in the area.

“The area has been very welcoming, but sadly we have lost one of the greatest assets with Rachelle leaving. She’s been a blessing to many,” says Rosalie.

“She had really appreciated all the help she had received and gone out of her way to help others from Christchurch when they arrived.”

Rachelle says the people of Greerton where very welcoming

and she thrived on giving back to others in need.

“It’s just that I can help others so I do. It’s paying forward – but I don’t even think of it like that, it’s always good to help others.”

Rosalie estimates 1000 people had come to Tauranga following the earthquake, but is unsure how many still remained.

She says it is heartening to see many of the newcomers settle in.

“Of course some of them are planning to return, but we are expecting quite a few more to shift up in November and December.”

Please allow room for these buses.

Children using bikes or scooters must wear protective helmets and need to push them when both on the school grounds and down Lumsden St between the pedestrian crossing and the school.

Pedestrians – please use the crossing before and after school.

Particularly if you are walking down Cameron Rd and crossing at Argyll Rd. A few parents and children have been seen running the gauntlet at this intersection.

The example has to be set by all families for the safety of everyone.

The staff car park is for staff only.

Not usually the type, Canadian Tracy Pepper “reluctantly” set up a profile to meet new people in the area. It was through this the 37-year-old met Allan Matthews, a new resident from Wales.

“I wasn’t looking for anything and I had been happily single. It took the pressure off that we were both just looking to meet people.

“We met for coffee and I acted as his tour guide. He was so lovely.”

After love at first sight and a month of courtship, Allan asked Tracy to marry him.

“It just felt so right. Neither of us are that sort of people to fall in love so easily, but it was like a fairytale. It pays to wait until you find the right one to marry.”

Tracy says their families are both very supportive, although she thinks it hasn’t sunk in yet.

“I think they are still finding it really hard to digest. My family is the ‘wait and see’ type and they haven’t been able to fully grasp the situation living so far away.

They are really sad they can’t be there.”

True to their lucky meeting, the couple married on 11.11.11 – the internationally recognised ‘lucky day’.

With just close friends attending and wearing a simply classic embroidered dress, Tracy says everything was kept “simple, elegant and beautiful”.

The couple are now embarking on 11 honeymoons in 11 months, keeping with the 11.11.11 theme. The first is a trip to Whitianga and also a trip to Wales in July.

A spin on silverbeet Fresh Fish

Last week I explained how the mint had taken over the strawberry patch, this week I wanted to mention the ever present silverbeet in the garden.

It seems to have gone ballistic – even the chickens are chomping at the beak to eat them when I have to toss them out cause they have gone to seed.

This humble vegetable has been pretty much a Kiwi staple for many years. When we are all trying to stretch our budget, silverbeet usually remains consistently a low cost item or a must have for many vegetable gardens.

High in vitamin A, K and C, it is also rich in minerals, dietary fibre and protein. So what can you do that’s a bit different with this popular vegetable?

There are many pie combinations on the internet using silverbeet, with the various forms of cheeses; ricotta, feta, Swiss cheese. I have tried a few, but my partners silverbeet pie tastes the best. Her secret is parmigiana cheese.

I have since used this idea as a crusting mix, a sort of a blanket which wraps itself onto chunks of fresh hapuka, sealing in the moisture and complimenting the flavour very well.

Ingredients for blanket mix Four chunks of fresh hapuka fillets, about 150g each 2 large or 4 med heads of finely chopped silverbeet 1/2 cup shredded parmigiana cheese Juice of 1 lemon 3 eggs Salt and pepper Corn flour or fine polenta for dusting fish 300mls cream 1/2 glass white wine Zest and juice from 1 lemon 1 Tbsp chopped parsley 2 Tbsp of capers 30g butter (optional) Method Whisk up lemon juice and eggs, add chopped silverbeet and parmigiana, dust fish chunks in corn flour then in mix, wrapping around some of the silverbeet mix. In a non stick pan heated to a medium heat, carefully place coated fish allowing each piece to seal in pan on each side, sometimes it helps to add a little oil. Place whole pan if possible or transfer to oven dish in medium oven about 200 degrees for approximately 10-15 minutes. This is of course determined by the size of fish, give it a poke – it should be firm.

For the sauce, reduce the wine with the zest until almost gone, add capers and cream. Reduce again till thick then add the lemon juice, while off the heat whisk in softened butter for those who need to give the sauce extra lift. Serve with the tender chunks of fish and micro greens or salad.

Penning wine for a lifetime While his fellow university friends were drinking beer, Michael Cooper found his love of wine – a passion which has lead him through a successful career as one of New Zealand’s top wine writers.

It began as a chain of events at university, when his passion inspired him to focus on wine in his Masters, somehow turning wine into a study of politics and the impact of New Zealand wine industry on the government.

“The New Zealand wine industry had to struggle to get ahead with New Zealand’s love hate relationship with alcohol,” says Michael.

“The industry realised if they wanted to bring a period of prosperity, they had to get parliament on side about the potential of the wine industry and become an effective political

lobby group.”

While he tried and failed to get his thesis published, Michael was encouraged to

write a “meaty book” on New Zealand wine in the 1970s.

As it happens, the book hit the market at the right time and sold with a “hiss and a roar”. Michael has since published 35 books reviewing and exploring New Zealand wines.

He says the key difference with New Zealand wine is our grapes, reflecting a “geological reality”.

“New Zealand soil comes through in flavour of the wine. We are a cool country by world standard for growing grapes.

“Our wines tend to be aromatic and have crisp natural acidity – the two hallmarks of New Zealand white wine.”

According to Michael, the key to a good wine is two things: Depth of flavour, a “richness that doesn’t dilute the flavour” and also a balance; “a harmony between flavours, alcohol, acidity to hit the nail on the head”.

Reviewing more than 5000 wines a year, one might wonder how Michael doesn’t turn to another brew, but he says this is just the “hobby that became a career”.

“The great thing about wine is everyone is different. That is the key part of my fascination with wine, it is unpredictable.”

The home-based early childhood education provider is the only Western Bay of Plenty organisation in the running for the JRA Best Workplaces Award, with high hopes they will win the small-medium workplace category they placed fourth in last year.

Marketing manager Stacey Blumenthal says everyone in the organisation – which includes 16 in the Tauranga office and 50 trained early childhood teachers around the county – believed it is a great workplace because of the ways staff are looked after.

Course tutor Pip Charlton says the scope of the skills taught means students are able to perform effective relaxation massage to become self-employed or work in a range of settings, including health spas and cruise ships.

“The range of techniques we teach help alleviate stress and discomfort, as well as overall health management.”

A range of relaxation techniques are taught, including on-site chair massage, Indian head massage and reflexology.

Originating in Asia, reflexology is when pressure is applied to points on the body on hands, feet or ears as they relate to the function of organs on the body, meaning a deep relaxation throughout the whole body. “At the Polytechnic, we have a dedicated massage clinic for the students to train in, providing invaluable real life experience,” says Pip. Members of the public can indulge in a $10 massage at the clinic, which both helps clients relieve stress at a fraction of the normal cost, while the students gain necessary confidence and experience to put what they’ve learnt into practise before going out into the workforce.

Is there a good daily multi?

The vast majority of multi type products are sold as ‘one a day’ dose products. It sounds so tempting to ‘get everything you need’ with a single dose.

But here is the problem. It is not possible to make a comprehensive multi product that covers all the micronutrients at meaningful levels. Typically, multi type products will have the full compliment of vitamins. With the notable exception of high grade natural vitamin E, vitamins are relatively inexpensive and take up little room in the tablet or capsule.

The challenge is that all ‘one a day’ products make serious compromises with nutrients that are either expensive and will make a more expensive product or take up a lot of room and cannot fit in the single dose.

An example of the cost factor is the avoidance of the highest grade botanical antioxidants. For example the best solvent-free OPC from grape seeds are very expensive and is usually omitted as it would make the product expensive.

Another problem is the space taken up by high grade chelated minerals when used at correct amounts. The chelates themselves are very bulky and you need about twice the weight and volume to get an active mineral amount. In my multi product the chelated minerals take up about 60 per cent of each capsule.

One solution is to pack the ingredients in hard tablets, but you then face another challenge of digestive systems not able to break down the tablets to get at the active ingredients. I much prefer capsules. These are more expensive, but breakdown within seconds, making the active ingredients immediately available for absorption and of course not needing to add a whole lot of inactive fillers, binders and colours.

Faced with these dilemma, there are really only two options: Create a ‘one a day’ product and make serious compromises in the range, quantities and with minerals, the quality of ingredients or just accept the fact that to make a good multi will mean doses of at least two capsules daily and will be comparatively more expensive at $1 to $2 a day.

My multi has an adult maintenance dose of two daily with a maximum dose – which I take every day – of four capsules daily. I see no point in taking any supplement that cannot do the job for which it was intended.

Community garden support grows

The Welcome Bay Primary School kapa haka group puts on a show at the community gala and garden open day at Selwyn Park.

Natural health starts with eating naturally, and plans for a Welcome Bay community garden is designed to support this venture.

The development has taken another step closer to become a reality with resident’s general support for the idea. Welcome Bay Community Garden Project coordinator Anna Larsen says a community gala and open day on the proposal held last weekend at Selwyn Park was “very encouraging”.

“It was really successful. We had a lot of support and have eased some concerns.”

To illustrate the scale of the garden on the group’s preferred site at Selwyn Park, an allotment was marked out on the ground and plans of the park were displayed with the Otumoetai Community Garden overlaid.

She says residents’ main concern is field space will be lost, but the “vast majority” of the area will be untouched and at most the area’s would only be separated by some shade cloth to stop balls hitting the gardens.

Residents were given diagrams of the proposed layout and given the chance to suggest changes to improve it.

The garden will be comprised of a series of allotments to be leased.

Anna says they need to do further consultation with Selwyn Park’s immediate neighbours and finalising meas-

ures such as signage to minimise theft and vandalism.

The group aims to have a formal application to lease the finalised garden site to the council by Christmas, with hopes that work could begin in autumn. Funds will also need to be raised to cover an estimated $20,000 in setup costs – based on the Otumoetai Community Garden it is being modelled on.

Anna says the garden will comprise a series of allotments, which will boost the community connection by bringing together residents from a wide range of ages and backgrounds.

Coffee break for a cause Having a coffee and muffin for a good cause has never been easier than with the Alzheimers Society’s recent annual ‘Cuppa for a Cause’ fundraiser.

Alzheimers Tauranga manager Jane Moore thanks everyone who supported the local fundraiser for its third year.

Inspired by an idea from senior home care service provider Home Instead, Alzheimers Tauranga has been encouraging business staff to order a fundraising coffee and muffin combo for $10 with half the price donated for dementia care.

Jane and Home Instead Tauranga relationship manager Moira Lomas – who came up with the original idea – run the programme together, delivering the coffee and muffin orders themselves. “It is always a struggle to raise funds, but we believe this is a great idea because people are given something for their money,” says Jane.

“But we would love more people to get behind it. Unfortunately, the money we’ve raised in the last two years has fallen because of the economic situation.”

Jane thanked the cafes involved – Rexa Cafe in Tauranga and Soul Shack in Mount

Maunganui – for supporting the cause by cutting the price for the organisers to help with fundraising.

Money raised is going to programmes to help people with dementia.

Now, there are home blood glucose monitoring sets and people with experience to help you monitor your levels and keep informed about diabetes.”

The society holds bimonthly meets as well as providing phone support.

The totally voluntary society is devoted to the needs of those with diabetes or those with an interest in the matter. The meetings often feature noted speakers or people who have themselves experienced diabetes.

Have waka, will paddle (and paddle) Forget about holidaying on the beach. Nine women from the Tauranga Moana Outrigger Canoe Club are heading to Rarotonga with a strictly competitive focus.

They are among 700 paddlers from around the world chasing glory in the annual Vaka Eiva 36km open ocean waka ama ‘changeover’ race – in a personal challenge to compete strongly on the international stage.

most have been paddling for about 10 years, but got their first taste of changeover racing as a group when they placed fourth in the open women’s section of the highly competitive 42km Takapuna Cup race in February.

“After the Takapuna Cup, we set a goal to do an international race and we’re aiming to finish in the top third of the changeover race. That’s where we are pitching.”

With some of the sport’s top paddlers competing – including teams from Tahiti and Hawaii where waka ama is a major sport – the crew has been training hard both in the canoe and practicing crew changeovers.

Under changeover racing, the nine-member team rotates the crew in the six-person canoe, with three members swapping over from a support boat every 15 minutes.

“It keeps the level of intensity high. It’s sort of like doing little sprints then having a little recovery.”

safely, but says the crew has so far avoided any catastrophes.

Along with the changeover race – which the crew aims to complete in three and a half hours – they are also competing in sprint and 18km non-changeover races.

The team is also getting involved

in the local community during its visit, sponsorsing a school with classroom stationery supplies and reading material. They will be visiting the school and taking the students out for a paddle.

Janine says one of the consequences of dehydration is that you basically loose everything in your stomach.“So not only was I collecting water at every aid station, but I was making frequent visits to the portaloos on every lap.

“Apparently I was slow and looked like a wreck on the first lap, but improved significantly for the second, third and fourth laps, coming in with even splits despite the CUSTOMER: portaloo visits.

“So all things considered, I guess that a top 10 finish was probably a very good result in the end. At the moment I’m not doing too badly.

I’m in good spirits and am taking in a lot of water.”

Are all insurance policies the same?

This is a question we often get asked and, in short, the answer is no.

In many ways it comes back to the old theory, ‘you get what you pay for’. Whilst generally this is true, in the life insurance world this is not always the case.

We have seen many policies sold to unsuspecting people that are what we would consider ‘substandard’ yet are the same premium amount or higher than other far superior life insurance policies.

For example, a recent client had life insurance in place. After reviewing his cover we found out it was accidental death cover only, so if he had of died by an illness, there would be no cover for him and his young family.

After quoting him on full life cover we found that the premium was almost identical. You can guess where his insurance is now.

Another big issue is with Trauma or Living Assurance type policies, where the wordings can make a huge difference at claim time. For example, as professional insurance advisers, we utilise up to date research* rating

the various Trauma insurance policies in the New Zealand market.

It is really interesting to note some of the big variances in the policy wordings.

For example, two of the three lowest rated policies are bank products and the third is a policy from a company advertising heavily with a famous ex sports star.

The difference from a ‘D’ rated product to an ‘A+’ rated product is quite substantial and interestingly the amount of the premiums are not that different.

My recommendation is if you are serious about ensuring that claim time for you is as stress free as possible, it would pay to have a review done on your policies. Also, if you did not receive advice from an adviser I would suggest to also do this to ensure that you have the right mix of products and amounts to ensure you are actually covered for what you wish to have happen should disaster strike you or your family.

Profiling ‘About Us’ When it comes time to prepare the content for your website, the trick is to go back to the analysis you’ve done of the target audience and |to work your way forward from there.

Rates increases likely Included in the rating estimates is a debt retirement charge of $3.9m, which has been reduced from $6.4m in the 2012 year.

In past years the council’s capital expenditure programme exceeded $95m per year, which has been reduced to below $65m for 2013, allowing a lower rates figure due to the lowering debt level. The council’s Ten Year Plan planning process continues on Thursday and Friday.

Tauranga City Councillors began their second pass at the Ten Year Plan this week learning their efforts so far haven’t managed to head off more rates increases.

The first cut of the 2012-22 Ten Year Plan shows a rate increase of 6.7 per cent in 2013 and 5.8 per cent in 2014, inclusive of both growth and inflation.

Mayor Stuart Crosby says there is a total consensus among the elected members of Tauranga City Council to reduce our debt.

Rena cargo salvage begins

Three containers were removed on Wednesday from the stern of the containership Rena aground on Astrolabe Reef.

The empty containers were lifted by crane from Rena’s stern onto the onto the barge Sea Tow 60.

Calm weather at the reef means the operation will continue today, says Martime New Zealand spokesperson Ross Henderson.

There have been no fresh reports of oiling on beaches overnight, and operations will continue in other areas today Teams of spill responders remain on standby and ready to swing into action should any more oil come ashore.

Retired jets boost Classic Flyers

Tauranga’s Classic Flyers is cementing its place as a premier New Zealand aviation museum with the allocation to it of two mothballed air force jet planes.

The museum is expecting to take delivery of a Royal New Zealand Air Force Skyhawk in February and a RNZAF Aermacchi at Easter.

Minister of Defence Wayne Mapp has announced American company JDI Holdings has purchased eight Skyhawks for $7.9 million with the rest of the mothballed aircraft being allocated to museums.

He also announced that Aermacchis and Strikemasters no longer needed by the RNZAF will go to aviation museums around New Zealand.

Bay of Plenty Classic Aircraft Trust chairman David Love says having one of each of these aircraft would be a significant boost for Classic Flyers and one that is appropriate for the museum.

On Winston’s watch Speaking to many local people I am surprised at the number who fail to show interest in the NZ Political scene at this important time when their future and that of the country is at stake. They have either chosen to forget or are simply unaware of all that we owe to Winston Peters. During his “watch” discussions were taking place concerning the upgrading of Tauranga Hospital, and until his intervention it was destined to be situated in Whakatane.

We can all imagine the problems that would have arisen had this been allowed to happen.

He also ensured the future of our aerodrome so vital to the economy of this city; free medical treatment for the under sixes and the toll free bridge must never be forgotten. If more space allowed I could mention more improvements that have made this city what it is today.

Let us consider the gap his departure has left. We need him now more than ever. If the Press were to print the release of his excellent policies there would be fewer “don’t knows”.

Remember the bridge

Since the first Tauranga harbour bridge became toll free local families have saved thousands of dollars each thanks to the persistent drive of the now retired Tolls Action Group.

When the second harbour bridge plans were agreed upon tolls were seen as a fait accompli, two dollars each way was mentioned if I remember correctly. Then, New Zealand First leader Winston Peters negotiated a toll free harbour bridge as part of his deal with Labour; once again those same families, many of whom I would guess are not well paid, have saved even more dollars.

Winston served our community well; he did not have to do what he did as no one probably thought it was possible. But, as our then member of parliament, Winston worked magnanimously on our behalf.

The harbour bridges have been a God send to the overall traffic flow of our entire community, being without them is unthinkable and they are toll free, thanks TAG, thanks Winston. From the above perspective, I suggest that New Zealand First, with Winston as its leader, is at least a creditable party vote.

Fudging the issue Of course the National Party wants a return to the First Past the Post (FPP) electoral system, but instead of a referendum to tackle the question head on, they fudge the issue with a promise of another vote later.

FPP guaranties the main parties time in government to ram through whatever legislation they may wish.

But who would want to return to previous times where, since Social Credit entered the fray in 1954, we have had “majority” government with less than 50% of the vote?

Who would want to see National in power but with less votes than Labour, because some Labour “safe” seats had huge majorities?

Who would want to see all the votes in any safe seats wasted...the outcome was never in doubt but we had to go through the process anyway?

And who would want to see a few hundred “super voters” in marginal seats deciding the next government?

A perfect system it may not be, but a vote for MMP at this referendum at least opens the way to see a review of any points of contention.

With MMP we can at least vote for something.

Not with FPP...we just vote the present lot out! Try the other lot for a change.

Council property and the debacles In respect to the proposal (Faulkner’s corner 11 Nov) to consider the sale of some of the 280 ratepayer owned properties within the City, I believe that it will require considerably more than “big tummy muscles’ from some of our elected members in order to proceed past go with this proposal as their past performance does not bode well.

I am neither supporting or opposing the current proposal but the now vacant May Street reserve at the Mount and the debacle over the ongoing funding for the Sydenham reserve, in Otumoetai, does not give me any faith that the councillors have the fortitude or desire to make some really hard decisions regarding the debt levels and costs facing this city.

The May Street reserve was going to be sold to assist in part funding of the cost of the Mount Greens project but public pressure and weak tummy muscles precluded this from happening and now the reserve is just a vacant piece of land costing ratepayers money to maintain.

The current councillors and if not them future Councils, must now make some tough decisions on our behalf or we will continue to face rate increases significantly higher than inflationary pressures.

Mr Bridges’ priorities Where do Mr Bridges priorities lie? It was recently reported that he was too busy to attend ‘meet-the-candidate’ meetings. However, they are where the average voter expects to be able to meet all candidates, to hear their views and ask questions.

Two of his priorities should be the growing issue with the Maori led race based movement of ‘dual nationhood’ (i.e. separatism) – publicly supported by MP Flavell; and people’s well-being.

Last election, National promised to do away with the Maori seats, and to not raise GST. The governmental electoral commission recommended the former, together with having only one electoral role for all voters. As Phil Goff has said, the latter was to fund tax cuts that gave him a several hundred dollar a week increase.

As an aside, the immediate disassembling of the Waitangi Tribunal gravy train would also ensure we were all better off, including non-corporate Maori, without selling assets!

Fortunately, being a floating voter I am not bound to ‘toe any particular party’s line’. However, it is interesting to note that the only party, whose founding principle was to have a united country with one rule for all, is NZ First. And while in opposition 2002/2005, they ‘worked’ with Labour to have the seabed and foreshore - together with the several trillion dollars of iron sands contained therein - vested in the Crown (where it rightfully belongs) for the benefit of all New Zealanders.

Double standards in secret taping

Election time acting up I always make a beeline for the “rogers rabbits” page but this week I think you have surpassed yourself. The Scenarios and Answers were delightful.

I especially liked the last one concerning the “star” of a bogan-themed Westie television series” who is now trying to tell the Government how to run this country.

No prizes for guessing the “star” was Robyn Malcolm and her uncalled for quite vicious attack on John Key. Perhaps she is still smarting from the fact that when she fronted the Actors Equity union’s industrial action resulting in an international boycott and our nearly losing The Hobbit movie overseas, John Key stepped in and altered the tax breaks and negotiated with Warner Bros. to keep the making of the movie here.

This saved hundreds of New Zealand jobs but Hell Hath No Fury Like a Woman Scorned!

How is it right or just that John Key can feel that the police can have the right to secretly video/tape criminals, yet when a journalist in a cafe is trying to keep the public informed is charged with ‘secretly taping’ John Key in a public area?

If he had wanted to keep the details of what he said secret, then he should have taken the person to his office or another ‘private’ area!

I refuse to vote for a person with double standards.

If you do not vote, you have no right to grumble about what Government or even your local council does. Use your vote to voice your opinion!

Whether one is a rabid nationalist, or a minority minnow leaner, we should all be taking notice of Phil Goff.

He is a man in one of the toughest jobs in the world. The leader of the opposition party which is extremely low in the polls, and seemingly staying there.

And yet, even knowing his predicament, he comes out every day, as gutsy and determined as ever.

Unlike smiling Plastic John, who freely admits that he will walk way from politics if he loses. Goff ’s committed himself totally to the job, and we should be thankful we are having such integrity being shown in a politician.

Manipulating the vote

John Key shows his contempt for this country’s democratic system of electing our representatives.

His latest stunt in Epsom to manipulate the vote must leave a nasty taste in the mouth of even some of the National supporters.

For months now the New Zealand Herald has pursued a policy that virtually deifies him and publishes, almost, a daily photo opportunity of him.

Is it any wonder that he believes he can get away with any deceit, any evasion, and in his mind an outright lie is just a manipulation of the truth.

Kiss’ airing of silent treatment I’ve written previously about the demise of the Mount’s Kiss-FM. But what was the full story?

This week we get the real oil directly from Max Christoffersen, who founded Contact 89FM at Waikato University in 1986.

listened to a radio station that was born from little else but the drive to share music and a love of the coast. Kiss-FM was born.

Sure it was a low power station, with only enough legal power to cover the Mount. But I knew the future for commercial radio was about to hit a wall.

Everyone in the business knew it. Radio was dying. And there was no way the commercial radio license fees that were due

by April 2011 could be paid by Australian company Ironbridge Capital to keep their unsustainable Kiwi radio stations afloat.

Something had to give. It could mean a radical resizing of the radio sector which had to mean spare frequencies and the right to broadcast with enough power to reach music lovers in Tauranga, Papamoa and Mount Maunganui. And there was also a non-commercial broadcast license, offered here in 2008 and then withdrawn at the last minute. Two aces up my sleeve.

It was worth a shot.

Fast forward to October 2011. After almost three years Kiss-FM had the highest rating of any of the radio stations I had launched in the two decades previously. It enjoyed growing media support and the local music community valued the airtime for their music. More than 4000 online requests for the Music-on-Demand service were being received each month; the station had achieved more than I thought possible.

Then I turned it off. It was October 25 10.30am. What had gone wrong?

‘Government’ is the one word answer.

While posturing as a free market operator PM John Key had decided to pay the FM radio license fees for Australian-owned radio in New Zealand: The Rock, More FM and The Breeze – thereby protecting the stations from ‘market forces’. Against the advice of Treasury, the Government had become a radio bank.

The hypocrisy of the decision is obvious.

Australian-owned local radio stations have a $43m cash loan from you and me, the taxpayer, and five years to pay it off. In

paying their broadcast fees for them, Government ignored their own free-market ethos, making up the rules as they went along. When it’s free-market the user pays; when it doesn’t suit to stick to the script, we pay.

Still, there was that ‘non-commercial license’ waiting in the wings for Bay broadcasters.

I had to take the second and final shot at making a musical contribution to my community.

Two months after making the application, the answer came back on October 25.

Kiss-FM had been declined with no reasons given by The Ministry for Culture and Heritage.

Within minutes of getting the Ministry’s decision Kiss-FM was off-air; the Mount’s local radio story was over.

Government had locked up the frequencies and paid for them with taxpayer’s money while the Ministry charged with encouraging culture and heritage and local identity had decided that silence on-air in the Bay was better than hearing Brilleaux, Hard To Handle, Grant Haua, Enercia, Hannah Fryett, Kokomo and a wealth of other world class Bay of Plenty musicians.

The 106.2 frequency along with six other frequencies today remain vacant, unallocated and silent.

All we need from our politicians is sound decision-making.

When it comes to broadcasting and the encouragement of our own space, our own place and our own identity in the Bay, government decision-making has been fueled with hypocrisy and petty bureaucracy.

Kiss-FM stood up for our place and for our voice. It fought the law – but the law won.

The Last Circus is a strange and rather brilliant Spanish film that showed earlier in the year at the Auckland Film Festival and won prizes at Venice. Set in a slightly surreal circus world it centres on ‘sad’ clown Javier, first exploring childhood experiences during

locations. Michael Caine is a fine cast addition as Finn MacMissile, a souped-up James Bond supercar that also runs on and underwater, while Eddie Izzard has less to work with but is fun as a Branson-style eco-tycoon.

Pixar have always said that they only make sequels if they have a new story to tell and this is ample proof.

It zips along with such panache that it certainly requires a second viewing to pick up the plethora of subtle moments and details that pass in the blink of Lightning McQueen’s headlights.

Better than the first one? It may just be.

Cars was never considered one of Pixar’s great films when compared to the likes of Toy Story or Finding Nemo. And the good news is that Cars 2 does the bizzo on all counts. It looks – predictably, I guess – ravishing, is furiously fast-paced and funny, and tells a whole different story. It opens up the potential for satire with an espionage conspiracy plot and a flurry of international

Helping the elderly stay independent Dementia is becoming a major problem for many in New Zealand. Most of us know of someone who is suffering from this illness in one form or another.

Some experience short or long-term memory loss, while others become confused and, as the illness progresses, fail to recognise members of their family and eventually become unable to care for themselves.

That’s just one of the situations where ‘Enliven’ comes in to help. Enliven Positive Ageing services give older New Zealanders the option to stay as independent as they want to be in their own homes and to feel great about it.

Enliven is not about “helping” people or doing things for them. Their services are

designed to help people thrive, not just to survive and to build resilience in day-to-day living. They do everything they can to find the right solution for older people at the right time in their lives, in partnership with them and their families.

The Enliven programme does not simply instruct people what to do. Their services are flexible, based on the goals the older person sets for themselves, taking into consideration the emotional and social needs as well as the practical day-to-day requirements.

Their aim is to build on strengths in a way that preserves the older person’s dignity and promotes overall wellbeing.

For the last five years, Pastor Tom Frew, the Senior Minister at Central Baptist Church,

has included in his church programme, free, monthly ‘Community Service Seminars’.

These seminars are designed to help the community to become aware of the many government and community based services available to the people of Tauranga and particularly for the older population.

The seminar on November 23 at 2.30pm is conducted by Enliven training and quality manager Cherie Saunders.

Pastor Frew believes this is one of the most important seminars in their series, as Tauranga has an ever increasing ageing population and the majority of these people in the second half of life want to retain their independence as long as possible. The seminar is free and is followed by afternoon tea.

Pets picnic with the Mad Hatter

Follow the white rabbit down to Tauranga Vets this weekend to treat your pet to a tea party with a quirky twist.

Tauranga Vets is holding a Mad Hatters Pets Picnic to encourage socialising between both pets and pet owners.

The event features specials and samples for the pets to try and dine on, as well as lots of specials on products in store.

For the dogs, there will be games such as musical mats (where the last dog not sitting on their mat is out) and a Puppy Ratzi (a dog walk where dogs can show off their best outfits).

Pets are encouraged to dress up, with some fantastic prizes to give away. There are also prizes for the smallest pet, the largest, the most unusual and even the hairiest.

The Mad Hatter is attending to host the tea party, as any good hatter would and is going to be MC. The Edge radio station is also attending with a free sausage to feed the pet owners (not the pets).

Women on-song for Fantasia show Tapping feet and tinkling the ivories – music runs through all 40 members of the women’s choir group Inachord.

Group conductor Cathy Hayes says the musical talents of the four-part harmony group members comes into its own when they put on one of the group’s rare performances.

“It’s just fantastic. I just love it,” says Cathy.

“I just love bringing the different parts together – hearing the melody and bringing the different parts together and filling it out.”

As conductor of the acapella singers, she guides the members through the songs without any

musical accompaniment.

Age concern seminar series continues The fourth seminar in the 2011 Age Concern Seminar Series is on Tuesday, November 29 from 10.30am to 12pm at Bureta Park Motor Inn. This seminar will cover a number of different topics, all related to how best to manage money.

The elderly are concerned to ensure their money is safe and that it provides them with the ability to maintain their standard of living

without worrying about the security of that money or their ability in the future to pay their bills.

The seminar has speakers from a bank who will deal with the best way to manage bank accounts, the police who will talk about scams and other rip offs that target the elderly, a financial advisor who will deal with the management of investments and a lawyer who will cover family trusts and other ways in which money and

investments can be owned and passed onto children, relatives and charities.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions and to talk to the presenters after the seminar.

Filling in the business gaps from home A new expo focused on home-based businesses is exploring the ways to keep business in the suburbs as well as showcase the concept of visiting a store outside of a retail centre.

The Mini Women’s Expo is an intimate showcase of businesses run from home by women in the Papamoa area.

Business owner Hannah Ward and her business partner Vanita Henry thought up the idea over coffee when they discovered a number of women were in similar positions as they were – stay at home mothers running a business out of their own property.

Vanita started her business V J Quality Women’s Wear four weeks ago. She sells pre-loved high-end designer women’s wear and is selling through parties and group gatherings.

Hannah started her business Little Years Boutique six weeks ago. She sells pre-loved kids label clothing.

Having some business experience previously, she says this helped her build her business and the response so far has been really good.

“We found these fantastic businesses. We really need our own community to help expo the businesses these women run.

“I think initially, when you start a home-based business, it takes a while for people to feel comfortable coming to a home. So this expo is

searched out local women. They also had businesses referred to them through friends and word of mouth to find the most unique businesses in Papamoa.

“This expo shows the community together,” says Hannah.

“Using our own resources, you don’t feel you have to travel to go to the main stores. It highlights the truly local business.”

The expo has signed on close to 40 exhibitors from the area and

Put together the missing pieces As a new dawn arises in Aotearoa, many hearts are heavy laden with grief.

At times, loud tears of anguish not able to be suppressed have over taken the lonely heart often in the midnight hour. A Father is missing, a mother or a brother. A seeking and a searching for something, sometimes unknown, but to our spirit a missing piece. A missing link.

A part of our lives not complete. In the midst of a crowd unconsciously looking out for that someone. Someone and something is missing. Wherever there has been a loss of relationship there will always be a grief no matter how we try and move on. Anger, anxiety, fear and

depression gradually overtake. A loss with no sense of belonging.

We are all made in the image of God. So we are created to be like Him to have His heart of compassion and gentle kindness. We have the DNA of God the Father. We are His children and the DNA attaches us to each other. So it is with your own family. You immediately connect. There is a likeness, a drawing and longing to be close because of DNA. Unfortunately, many family connections have been savagely sabotaged and connections frayed.

It can be hard to find a way to reconnect. Pride can stand in the way and keep us bound, but love can over take. No situation is impossible to a loving God.

In the case of a son in Luke 15 v 20 who had left home and gone his own way, when he finally realised what he was missing and returned with a forgiving heart, his father gave him a royal welcome and embraced him. Maybe this is what God has in his heart for you to do.

But maybe you have never knew your father and this has left a huge hole in your heart.

The heavenly Father says, He will be a Father to the Fatherless and He sets the lonely in families. In love He predestined you to be adopted as His son or daughter through Jesus Christ. You will be automatically included in Christ when you hear the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation.

The Father's love overflowing from His vast heart of grace is there for you to embrace.

His arms are always open with unconditional love and acceptance. He will never reject, abandoned or forsake you.

You carry His DNA and He welcomes you into His family.

He wants to be your father and fill in the missing piece in your heart. Let the residue of these words go deep into your soul. I pray and bless you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Father's House welcomes you home to find the Father heart of God where a royal embrace welcomes you.

The times of the signs In Luke 12:54–56, Jesus says to the crowds gathered around Him, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, at once you say, It is going to rain! And so it does.

And when (you see that) a south wind is blowing, you say, There will be severe heat! And it occurs. You playactors (hypocrites)! You know how (intelligently) to discern and interpret and prove the looks of the earth and sky; but how is it that you do not know how to discern and interpret and apply the proof to this present time?”

Jesus rebukes the religious leaders of the time, calling them playactors and hypocrites because they did not interpret the clear and evident signs around them that were providing the keys to the decisive time in which they lived. The great consequence for many in that day, was that they missed the hour of their visitation, when Jesus came and dwelt among them.

Both the Scriptures and world events that are the clear fulfilment of Bible prophecy, make it clear that we are living in the Times of the Signs – the times when the signs of the end-times are being fulfilled. If we are not discerning and interpreting the signs of these times in this hour, we will be like the five foolish virgins that Jesus speaks about in Matthew 25 – asleep spiritually, without “oil in our lamps” and unprepared for the coming of Jesus as the Bridegroom.
