Guardians of the night As the light goes down, the incidence of crime in our neighbourhoods goes up – but groups of community-minded volunteers around the Western Bay are helping make a difference with regular night patrols.

The latest area to back plans for a community patrol group is Bethlehem, with hopes patrols will begin early next month.

The groups, which are often called ‘night owls’, patrol the streets from Thursday to Saturday looking out for suspicious

It was one of those “thank you god” moments, when I was concerned that I did not really have a topic for this week’s column, when suddenly, as if from the heavens, the Lord offers me on a plate, a complete nutter.

He certainly looked like Jesus. Or at least the stereotype Jesus we’ve been brought up to expect Jesus to look like; though considerably more deranged than in the brochures. We’ve always been told the real JC is a pretty together sort of dude.

Here I was, minding my own business enjoying the serenity in a kayak down a river, as I do, absorbing the brilliant autumn weather, marvelling at the whitefaced herons daintily strutting about the banks and watching a lazy trout oscillating, or whatever trout do, when they look like they are oscillating.

Guttural screaming pierced the serenity, echoing around the valley.

It sounded like someone was being murdered.

Maybe even crucified.

I considered calling 111 to report a serious assault. But was it?

As I cruised downstream, I realised I was close to a renowned commune on the river and there was a good chance I would find the shouter, probably naked, most likely from Europe, almost guaranteed to be wet and certainly off his tree on some sort of substance.

Imagine my un-surprise when I found a wet, naked, and probably substanceaffected German on the riverbank shouting at the top of his lungs, professing to be Jesus.

This Jesus did not have a cloth covering his private parts. He was starkers. As the song says, only wearing a smile. As the wailing continued unintelligibly, I wanted to ask, “John Banks, is that you?”

But as I got closer, I realised that this guy, though extremely weird, actually knew what he was doing, even if no-one else did.

Besides, he had longer hair and a glimmer of intelligence behind the bloodshot eyes.

That seemed to rule out Banksy.

He looked just like the shroud of Turin, except in 3D and standing on a river bank, howling. A sort of “Ewen Gilmour gone nuts” look.

About now, the real Jesus is probably turning in his shroud.

Because this guy is breaking a fair number of commandments, including do not let thy naked thang hang loose alongside the riverbank... And do not scare the bejeezes out of unsuspecting kayakers. (little

There’s something very therapeutic about drifting along, fishing and hunting and watching the herons and trout doing their thing. I haven’t felt the urge to stand naked, howling at my own echo. Maybe after a few more bourbons.

Tougher penalties for gecko smugglers Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson has welcomed the conviction of an endangered gecko smuggler but says tougher penalties are needed.

German visitor Andreas Hahn was sentenced to a four month jail term in the after taking endangered geckos and attempting to smuggle them in his underpants.

“The actions of this man are appalling and a gross insult to all New Zealanders,” Ms Wilkinson says.

Trans Tasman rowboat launched

Danny Sunkel and his new rowboat.

Danny Sunkel starts a three-day talk fest today, explaining his mission to row both ways across the Tasman Sea, and the unique rowboat in which he plans to accomplish it.

The boat, a self righting 11.8m trimaran, was launched in Tauranga last week at Nautilus, Sulphur Point, just metres away from Pachoud’s were the carbon fibre and foam craft was built.

The launching was a low key affair for family, sponsors and friends before the boat was taken out of the water for its trip to Auckland this week, where it will be one of the stars of the New Zealand Hutchwilco Boatshow.

After a weekend spent talking, Danny will be focussing on pre-

paring the rowboat for sea.

“The main structure of the boat’s all finished, we just need to finish building the rowing set up, because the riggers are critical – if they break, it’s all over,” says Danny.

The rowing station, where Danny will live most of his time on board as he rows across the Tasman and back, is going to be as unconventional as the rest of the boat.

“It’s definitely not conventional, so we need to make sure its engineered right. On Friday I just picked up all the wheels for it. Salt water is not the best environment, and a typical problem on most ocean rowing boats is the wheels seizing.”

In the small world of long distance rowing the Craig Loomes designed trimaran is a unique departure from conventional

rowboats on many points, and Danny’s been cagey about revealing details too soon.

“The guy who holds the Atlantic record is designing a new boat as we speak,” says Danny.

He’s expecting it will be three or four weeks before he gets his first row, as he starts working up to the departure for Australia in the summer of 2013.

The plan is to row from the Hokianga to a landfall somewhere in northern NSW/Gold Coast region. The return journey will be attempted later the same year, when he hopes to pick up the westerlies towards the end of September-October, and set out from southern New South Wales/ northern Victoria with the aim of landing near New Plymouth.

The changing face of our game When folks, behind wistful eyes, wax lyrically about the ‘good ole days’ of New Zealand rugby, they speak of figures like former Western Heights High School coach Dick Gordon.

Indeed, spend some time with Dick and wife Daphne at their Matua home, and the former high school coach of All Blacks greats Wayne ‘Buck’

Shelford, Steve McDowall and Hika Reid might just share the odd yarn himself.

The former combined services physical training instructor, who travelled the world with the Navy for 22 years from 1945 to 1966, could even read aloud from a faded London Times article to illustrate just how different those old days were.

“Bellona’s team limbered up before the start with one of those engaging performances which consist of a combination of conversation, something appropriately like a sea shanty and wild cavortings. This was so much appreciated by some hundreds of school boys that shrill treble variations of it continued all through the game.”

Dick, a number 8 who played rugby for the combined services in Singapore, Vietnam, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Pakistan, England, Wales, Canada, USA, Fiji and Samoa, especially recalls a match played in Karachi.

“I was in Pakistan before the English left and we used to play rugby on the beach when the tide was out. We would mark the lines with a stick and dig great holes to put the posts in.”

But mostly, there are stories about people.

About how it was obvious that Buck was special; how Steve, who would become national judo champion, was able to manipulate scrums at will; how Hika was a freak who dominated athletics meetings across the Bay. How a metal work teacher welded together a custom-made scrum machine; how Buck captained North Harbour in its inaugural fixture against a Waikato side led by fellow WHHS old boy Peter Kawa; how both Stephen and Buck were named in a World XV selection by Sports Alive magazine in 1990; about how the school also produced

former All Blacks Caleb Ralph and John Brake.

Yet Dick, like the purists who talk of men like him, doesn’t have much time for school rugby these days in an age of scholarships, imports and declining player numbers.

“Sad to say, but I’m afraid I don’t know where it’s all going.”

Doco on Moko Moko, the dolphin who stole hearts up and down the North Island’s east coast between 2007 and 2010, is set to hit the silver screen with some help from his friends.

Marine biologist and filmmaker Amy Taylor, who is making the feature-length documentary film which includes some previously unseen footage, is asking for fans of Moko to help finance the film.

The effort is already underway on fundraising website Pledge Me, where people can view the film’s trailer and pledge money to choose rewards, including pre-ordered DVDs, having a company or personal name appear in the credits and two associate producer credits.

Amy intends to have the film, which focuses on why dolphins should be protected from slaughter and captivity, shown at both domestic and international film festivals.

Pink shirts attack cyber-bullying If you see a large number of people wearing pink shirts today, don’t panic; they’re most likely taking part in Pink Shirt Day – a nationwide campaign supporting anti-bullying.

Among those donning a pink shirt is Otumoetai College year 10 student, Kelcy Ballantyne, who says because of Facebook and texting, cyber-bullying is a growing concern for many students.

The danger of cyber-bullying is that students can bully others anonymously and from the safety

of their own homes, she says.

The problem with that is if it’s been done outside of school then teachers have no power to stop it.

“It’s definitely is an issue for people who get bullied a lot.”

Pink Shirt Day coincides with Government efforts to fast-track a Law Commission report looking at ways of reducing the harm caused by cyber-bullying.

The report investigates potential law changes, including introducing a new offence of maliciously impersonating another person on the internet.

It also corresponds with the Ministry of Education’s efforts to give principals the power to confiscate phones, laptops and digital devices.

Tauranga Boys’ College principal Robert Mangan says he is supportive of the proposed law changes and would welcome the extra power to seize student’s digital devices if bullying was suspected.

“I think any tools a school can get to help manage the issue better is a good idea.

“If they’re bringing that technology to school I think that’s a condition they should accept.”

Tauranga Girls’ College principal Pauline Cowens says it would be useful to have the power to check and seize students’ phones but parents also need to take responsibility for their children’s use of the technology.

Dishing out some Machete Justice A Tauranga-based metal band with an interesting name is coming up in the music world.

Machete Justice, comprised of guitarist Mark Wright, singer Tarquin Keys, bassist Jared Dykes and drummer Simon Power, is thrilled that its third single from its first album is receiving

national attention.

The band, whose single ‘The Ballad of Bubba J White” – based on an independent film about a tap dancing Appalachian hillbilly called ‘White Lightning’ - is currently on rotation on C4.

The band takes much of its style from the greatest traditions of metal/rock

Its name sounds like a metal cliché, which it partly is, harkening back to the seemingly non-sensical names of the group’s favoured bands.

But it also references an episode involving a bloody, topless man with a machete wandering around Windemere in December 2009.

“We came up with the name at our third practise,” says Tarquin.

“There was a guy roaming

“The 1980s and 1990s seemed to be the last time, for us anyway, that there was any depth to songwriting. We’re big on the songs, we don’t want to just throw a whole bunch of riffs together.”

The independent band, whose album can be found nationwide in major music chains, plans to head to Melbourne next year where some helpful contacts await.

Tarquin says the rest of this year will be spent promoting singles off the album and playing as many gigs as possible.

Pin Up Pet of the Week

Bay voices UK bound Naomi Ludlow and Morgan McAneny are heading to London to sing this year.

Two talented young Bay of Plenty vocalists have their sights set on the bright lights of London.

Former Bethlehem College student Naomi Ludlow will travel with friend and former Otumoetai College student Morgan McAneny to the English city in September, to take their places at the prestigious Institute of Contemporary Music Performance.

There, they will work towards the high diploma and degree in vocal studies, which is likely to take about five years.

The girls are thrilled at the pros-

pect of their looming departure.

“We are very excited for this massive change as we have grown up in Tauranga and spent all our schooling years here,” says Naomi, who caught the singing bug while attending church at the tender age of just five-years-old.

Naomi, who has been part of various bands, choirs and ensembles, has an acoustic indie-pop sound and prefers to write her own music, while Morgan, who regularly performs in town and at community events, has a contemporary, soulful sound.

performing arts in Los Angeles in 2010 and was part of a band last year which won Battle of the Bands in Tauranga, while Naomi has won the Voice For Life songwriting competition.

They plan on working part-time in London, playing gigs and busking to help them through their studies.

A fundraising concert has been arranged to help the pair on their way and is on June 1 at Bethlehem College Performing Arts Centre, which seats more than 500 people.

Tickets for the concert, which will feature the pair and more than 10 other vocalists, cost $5. Doors to open at 6pm for a 7pm start.

Waterfront taskforce oversteps mark The waterfront taskforce charged with supervising the city’s water front development has exceeded its authority by spending money without committee or council approval, is was learned this week.

Making a call on $32,000 of waterfront project spending resulted in the city’s waterfront taskforce being criticised at Monday’s council projects and monitoring committee meeting for exceeding its authority.

In reply to questions, taskforce member Larry Baldock told the council Projects and Monitoring Committee the taskforce brought forward money from next year’s budget to pay for underground services.

It was work that was going to be done and it made better sense to do it now. One lot of services involved $15,000 and another $17,000, says Larry.

The budget in the report shows year-to-date actual spending is $459,000 against $360,000 budget. The dif-

ference is $99,000. Total spending this year is expected to be $826,000.

Mayor Stuart Crosby directed all future waterfront figures go to the committee, not the taskforce.

Committee chairman Bill Falkner says the taskforce’s action raises the question of who would be liable for any cost overruns should the taskforce’s decisions result in the project going over its budget.

The waterfront taskforce includes Larry Baldock, Tony Christiansen, Bill Grainger, Terry Molloy, CEO Ken Paterson, strategic planner Adele Hadfield, and Duarne Lankshear from Priority One. Work began on the waterfront development in February, with the first stage being completed before Easter.

Construction of the next stage began immediately after Easter and is expected to be completed by July.

Tauranga students are going to get creative More than 60 of Tauranga’s best young minds will test their ingenuity today at the annual Tauranga Primary BP Challenge at Tauranga Intermediate.

Primary school students from 12 schools in the Tauranga area will be given several mystery challenges to work on, with only the simple materials of paper, sticky tape, string and a pair of scissors to make their devices.

A time limit of 20 minutes will be

enforced, so the pressure will be on.

Organiser and Tauranga Intermediate teacher John Marsh says he is constantly amazed at the abilities of children.

“It never ceases to amaze me the many wonderful and imaginative ideas that the students come up with and they all have a lot of fun on the day.”

A week of recovery sees some success for anglers Last week there was a recovery from the marked fish drop off the week before and the ‘no fish’ in most of the inshore, middle area, and local fishers’ spots.

However last week, put off by the ‘no fish’ stories of a fortnight ago, there was a considerable drop off in the number of anglers going fishing. But most of those who gave it a go had some success.

Harbour fishing became apparent when the angler fishing the Otumoetai Channel one day last week landed seven good sized snapper.

Off the ocean beaches from Papamoa to Matata surfcasters and longliners were bringing in sufficient snapper and the odd gurnard.

Saturday our veteran kontiki operator brought in his limit of

good snapper up to 3kg and a few gurnard in two sets off Papamoa Beach.

The Western Bay Surfcasting Club April Club Fish contest was at Papamoa East on Saturday. Five snapper and one gurnard were weighed in. The heaviest fish was a 1.94kg snapper weighed in by Grant Dodunski.

tarakihi and gurnard. Out wide there were still good catches of tarakihi, snapper, bluenose, gemfish, and kingfish.

Brett Keller (Manutere): out last weekend both days was fishing around Motiti and getting a good variety of fish although the main group remained snapper, red snapper,and tarakihi.

Garth Le Lievre (Deepstar): out at Mayor during the weekend found the tarakihi still good, but the bluenose not so abundant.

Let us look into the future

Local government is under pressure to limit rate rises; that is no surprise and absolutely what is needed.

But at the same time, we the council have been listening to you the public, the six territorial councils in the Bay of Plenty, groups such as Forest and Bird, Federated Farmers, business and land developers, community boards, and Maori trusts – i.e. almost every sector of our Bay-wide community making up the 176-plus submissions to our Annual Plan.

Our council has been listening but realistically we cannot deliver what is requested without increasing rates and that is not a realistic option within the tight economic framework of the country as a whole.

Have they listened?

This has been the week of submission hearings for the Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s Long Term Plan.

Very few ratepayers have been able to read the 415 page document but 600 submitters have filed more than 2000 pages of submissions for the councillors to read over the weekend and listen to this week.

I have scanned the documents looking for any common themes and also called representatives from around the wards to get an idea of local concerns.

Finance, or lack of it, is common to all.

Concern over the large Council debt and the plans to raise rates spectacularly over the next few years to finance the growing debt mountain are common in all wards. All wards have recognised that the rate burden for the elderly is unsustainable and will be getting worse.

Council won’t reduce rates

Reading through the submissions to our regional council Ten Year Plan I have been disappointed at the negativity to high rate increases without any suggestions for solutions.

For me if the regional council doesn’t address its over-staffing issues (back office planners and paper shufflers) then it just can’t hope to contain rate rises to the cost of inflation.

A few weeks ago I wrote about staff numbers, believing they currently employ around 275 staff. I have now been given the numbers from council staff and find that the figure has risen to 288 (and this doesn’t include some consultants that seem to be permanently employed by the regional council).

When local government was last restructured and the regional council established in 1989, this organisation employed less than 160 staff!

Providing extra eyes and ears Every weekend groups of community-minded people around the Western Bay of Plenty set out at night to help make neighbourhoods safer.

While it is hard to say what difference the community patrol groups make in preventing crime, those involved have no doubt about their benefit.

Tauranga community constable Jennie Wright is among those singing the praises for the volunteers who patrol the streets until late looking for suspicious activity.

“They act as a great deterrent for offending and they are our eyes and ears out there. They have the ability to report offences.”

Night patrols for Bethlehem

She says community patrols are important ways for members of the community to actively help police.

But like anything, she says the success comes down to the numbers involved.

Tauranga South Community Patrols stalwart Keith Carter is adamant about the important deterrent role of the group nicknamed Greerton Night Owls, quoting a story he was told by a member of Greerton police.

“When they picked up this guy who had been a major player in the area they asked him why they didn’t see him around as much as they had and he said ‘You never know when those night owls are going to pop up’.”

Community night patrols could begin in Bethlehem as early as next month following strong support for the idea at a recent public meeting.

Community Patrols Bay of Plenty district representative Graeme Mills says there was good interest in setting up a Bethlehem Night Owls group, but they are still looking for more volunteers and will begin training and patrols after a committee is set up.

“There was strong support for night patrols, but it will all come down to the committee and the number of volunteers they can get for their roster.”

Graeme, who called the meeting to float the idea to help improve overall safety, says most of the 25 people at the meeting were surprised to learn about the extent of crime in the suburb in detailed crime statistics reported to the meeting.

“There isn’t a lot of major crime but they were surprised by just how many minor incidents are going on around them.”

Once the committee is established, volunteers will be trained in patrol procedures and working with the police before the first patrols began. Initial night patrols are likely to be on Fridays and Saturdays, and will be extended to Thursdays if there are sufficient volunteers.

“It’s not that this is the only time crime happens, but it’s when there seems to be the most activity, so they are the days most groups focus on.”

The Bethlehem group will join community patrol groups already operating in Greerton, Tauranga, Matua, Te Puke, Papamoa and Mount Maunganui.

May an exciting time to be a young retriever It’s an exciting time to be a retriever, when the shooting season starts and we get a chance to answer our calling.

Bred to fetch, I can chase and fetch all day. I’ve been practising with sticks and balls and things and chasing live birds at every opportunity. I get so excited when the guns come out of the safe and I get a whiff of that gun oil and hear the snap of the polished metal-on-metal action.

I heard of one keen Labrador who got so carried away when his boss got the gun out for cleaning before the hunting season, she took off into the bush for a few days and started without him. Well I’m not that fanatical, and try not to let the boss from my sight. I might miss something!

The other day the boss loaded me and Ady and my favourite uncle and mates into the duck boat – the one that looks like it was parked too close to the paint factory explosion – and off we went for my first opening day. It was all a bit wide-eyed and overwhelming for a young pup, but I was itching to get out there and have a go. I kept an eye on the trees, because sometimes when the gun comes out, possums fall from the branches. Not today though.

From the first gunshots I figured out the critters fall from the sky. I was eagerly looking for the downed bird and when the boss said “go” I keenly swam out to it.

“Yep, there it is boss.” And I swam back. “It’s a bird alright.”

That was fun. Shoot the gun again.

It was at this point that the boss pointed out that I was meant to actually pick up the bird and swim back with it, like Ady does.

Huh? I’ve been trained all year to chase sticks and balls. I don’t think my job description covers dead things? I’ve been eyeing up these flying contraptions every day that uncle takes me for a run at The Lakes with Ady. But finally getting up close with the feathery flappers was a bit daunting, to start with. In the meantime, I will just watch the veterans while I pluck up courage.

Still, the day was so exciting that I could hardly sit still in the maimai.

At one point, during a quiet patch, I heard gunfire from another party of shooters a few hundred metres along the shore. I started running there straight away, in case they needed help! The boss called me back and explained it wasn’t the done thing, to run madly between whichever maimai was producing the action.

They’ll call if they need my help.

Bugger, I just have to wait then.

Eventually the boss shoots a couple of geese. They thudded into the water like an Airbus in the Hudson River. I went out for a look at those, too, but man, have you seen the size of those suckers? A dog would need a barge the size of Smit Borneo to get one of those ashore.

I swam a couple of victory laps around it and then left it for him to pick up in a kayak.

At least he couldn’t pick it up without waking me! In the meantime I’m just hanging out for another day in the funny little boat and a chance to hear those

booming guns again. It stirs something deep in my ancestral psyche.

Gotta run now, I think I just heard the rattle of the boatshed door.

If the weather hadn’t been so nice and the ducks were flying lower and his dodgy shoulder wasn’t playing up... (translation: if the boss had been a better shot) I’d have had more practice and a chance to figure out how Ady does it. Never mind, plenty of season left and by next year, I’ll be bigger and wiser and duck-savvy.

After a couple of exciting days, early mornings and a whole lot of running around, I was dog-tired.

I fell asleep in the boat, my weary whiskers on his gun case, exhausted.

Remembering Crete

of Crete Association secretary, returned to the battlefield a year ago to commemorate the70th anniversary of the German invasion of Crete on May 20. He was visiting the island with his brother – whose wife’s grandfather was Major Humphrey Dyer of D Company in the 28th Maori Battalion.

Major Dyer played a key role in the counterattack at Maleme, before taking part in the rear-guard action when the island was evacuated.

“This relationship (with the Kiwis) was forged during the relatively brief period of

“They are very welcoming of Kiwis. They have a huge respect for each other from the time the villagers sheltered the soldiers and got to know them. They soon discovered they had a lot in common – a few New Zealanders actually married villagers.”

On this original visit Colin helped his brother lay a plaque on a river bank for Major Dyer, to honour one of his soldiers who died there at the major’s side.

Lots to see in May skies During the month of May, Venus is brilliant in the early evening, appearing low in the northwest soon after sunset.

As the sky darkens, Sirius appears in the west with Orion below it.

Crux, the Southern Cross, and the Pointers are southeast of overhead. Below Sirius are Rigel and Betelgeuse, the brightest stars in Orion. Between them is a line of three stars: Orion’s belt. Midway up the north sky is orange Mars.

To its left is Regulus, the brightest star in Leo. High in the northeast sky is Saturn, making a close pairing with Spica, the brightest star in Virgo. A small telescope will show Saturn’s rings and its largest and brightest moon, Titan, which orbits about four ring-diameters from the planet.

Debris in space is becoming an increasing danger faced by astronauts, with every mission in space adding to the 20,000+ known pieces of space junk. Last month, the six astronauts on board the

International Space Station took refuge as a precautionary measure when a piece of junk came within 25 kilometres of the station. The ISS has had a few close calls before, the closest of which was last June when a piece of debris came within 335m of it.

The two biggest debris-generating events were: in 2007 when China used a missile to destroy one of its own satellites, and in 2009 when a Russian and American satellite collided. Often such debris can be travelling at speeds in excess of 10,000 kilometres per hour and ranges in size from paperclips to discarded rocket fuel tanks.

Currently efforts are being made to set in place an international accord to identify and limit such debris in the future.

“Lace is coming back in thanks to Kate, as well as the long sleeves, and a more vintage look. There’s also a move toward fullness in the skirt, with lots of tulle, and ‘50s style dresses are popular, with shorter hemlines and little cap sleeves.”

Last week’s column was written during the submissions and remainder of the submissions covered equally wide ranging views. In fact 180 degree views. One apparently well-to-do submitter answered my question that if council were to agree to their submission, Tauranga would be utopia and how would that be paid for? The curt response was “by ratepayers”.

I continued by asking how some 30-40% of ratepayers who were below the average income would pay the significant rate increase that would be required. They would pay, somehow, possibly by downgrading their house, came the response.

That’s one point of view. Another submission was that council stop everything other than the proverbial ‘roads, rates and rubbish’ services.

What core services are depends on the eye of the beholder. And their income too!

Hockey turf mooted

More well thought out views on the draft plan, some supporting and others not supporting. The one submission that really shone out was from Jo Tisch, representing Tauranga Hockey Association.

A thoroughly professional, well researched proposal, requesting $200,000 from ratepayers to ensure that a tagged TECT grant would be picked up. TECT have offered $800,000 towards a new synthetic turf provided hockey can raise the balance. They also requested some $55,000 from ratepayers annually towards maintenance and depreciation. Jo said that a comment I wrote last year after they came to ratepayers asking for replacement of the synthetic turf at a cost of around $1.5 million had stung the hockey people but then galvanised them into action. I don’t recall it but apparently the comment was that hockey was in a field of dreams.

Back in the ‘90s when the synthetic turf went down, council was assured by hockey administration, that hockey would not be back to ratepayers and those of us who are still around remember that. But that was never recorded. Hockey aren’t the only ones that used that line in the past, so we’ll move along.

There will be a whole lot that needs to be done at the end of the ratepayers’ ability to pay. Or maybe that should read most ratepayers?

There will need to be discussion on how much light is needed and who would fund it. Council’s thrust here is making more effective use of existing facilities.

Local rugby icon and mayoral candidate Terry (Hori) Leaming gave an impassioned plea for a stadium at the domain. But he was deflated to learn it had been a rugby administration decision to head to Baypark instead, when a stadium proposal for the domain had been floated in 2002.

And those who don’t want to have to move to Whangamomona where, figuratively speaking, rates are imagined to be cheap.

Standards should not slip

My take on the majority thrust of submissions, including my take on the views of most of those who didn’t submit, is best summarised from a submission that ends: “Try hard to trim costs wherever you can, but please don’t resort to lowering the standards the city currently enjoys.” That’s Page 2025 of the submissions from Rob and Trish Parkes. I think that’s probably the feeling of most elected members and the hard bit is how that is achieved.

There will have to be some unpopular decisions and some upset people to achieve this.

Some controversial issues will require strong tummy muscles from elected members. Pilot Bay Walkway being one. Do we do it at all?

If so, where? What surface? Many differing views on this. How will it be paid for?

An interesting presentation from Glenn Meikle regarding Soper Reserve in Newton Street. A lot of records were lost when the former Mount Maunganui Borough Council was burned down. It seems that Mr Soper donated the land in memorium of two people who were killed on the railway line that runs alongside the land. It was apparently a camping ground back then.

Council officers will try and trace the actual history of how this all happened. If you can shed light on this, please phone Yvonne, 07 577 7093. Meanwhile I’ll be brave and say that Soper Reserve will remain.

From here all submissions are collated for officer comment and research and elected members will deliberate from Monday, May 28.

Deliberations are all open meetings and you are most welcome. Daily print media coverage of the submissions was spasmodic, the reporter came and went, seemingly only being present for selected submissions. Disappointing, because many individual submitters had positive points of view that would have been of interest to the community.

Some interesting reports on Sunlive helped cover though.

At Projects and Monitoring Committee treasury staff told elected members that interest on council’s borrowings are expected to hold at around 6% for a while longer. Gross external council debt was $406.6 million at April 30 – net external debt was $379.8 million. Rates revenue funded debt was $271.9 million. This all means that there is little room for any more borrowing lest council exceed its debt/revenue ratio set by the credit rating agency.

Some years ago Greg Brownless and I set up a voluntary rates account so that those people demanding extra amenities and services from council/ratepayers could actually contribute themselves to help pay for their wants/needs/ deserves. Sadly this fund languishes at only $3570, with no contributions for a long time. Living proof that some of the people making excessive demands for extras on ratepayers are selfish and uncaring for a significant part of our community who simply cannot afford to pay extra, and in some cases simply can’t afford to pay at all.

The emphasis has turned to two new strands of business – contract industrial design work for New Zealand businesses and Multifid’s own projects.

“It’s almost impossible for us to compete for the lowend consumer products with other countries because our costs here are high so we focus on the high-end, high tech – the difficult stuff.”

In particular he is focusing on workplace safety – having developed a product that helps industry to monitor, record and alert them to safety hazards and map issues so that risks can be cut.

“It can be used wherever there is machinery and people – it allows the operator to be warned whenever someone comes within a set proximity of the machinery. They will also know exactly where the person is, how far away they are.”

James envisages the product – which combines sensors, software and logging systems all in one – being used in all sorts of situations, including in warehouses, factories or with trucking firms.

With the team’s five electronics engineers focussed on design, James works with contractors to build the product or provide services, such as marketing, which are not their strengths.

James believes Tauranga has the potential to become a major high tech centre by attracting other specialist businesses that can work together and create a hub to be ‘the silicon valley of New Zealand’. By Hamish Carter

Keeping up with e-book demand Worldwide issues over publishers supplying e-books to libraries are affecting Tauranga City library and its ability to supply enough e-book titles to retain customers’ interest.

The city library has a catalogue of about 1400 e-book titles. There have been 218 titles purchases for the year to date and there will be about 400 by the end of the financial year “The worldwide market is very much in transition,” says Tauranga City Libraries collections and information manager Smita Biswas.

“The biggest problem for the entire library industry is the number of publishers that have come on board with the e-book industry, because there is such a lot of competition.

“We would love to offer our customers a lot more but it’s just at this stage there is a limited amount available.”

There are also issues with some publishers withdrawing their collections from the e-books market, because they are not sure whether people can misuse the e-book.

The fight is partly over readers. Amazon, the world’s largest online seller, allows its e-books to only be read on a proprietary e-book reader known as Kindle.

None of the libraries anywhere in the world use Kindle. They use everything else; other brand readers, ipads, laptops, desktops, and links to free downloadable reader applications.

“It’s going well. At this stage we are just starting to record the statistics. Last month there were about 166 bought - not a bad percentage from 400 items.”

The free classics are also proving popular, thought to be because people downloading to their new readers start out on the free classics and out of copyright collection.

The Tauranga libraries are also running a lot of free drop-in classes for people to bring in their readers, as some people are not confident with technology.

“We can’t offer a service without teaching people how to use it,” says Smita.

“A lot of people have received their readers for Christmas. Some didn’t know their Cobol needed to be recharged. We have staff trained in answering queries at the branches and main libraries.”

Bay launch dates revealed for fibre Western Bay of Plenty residents can now find out exactly when they will have access to ultra-fast broadband thanks to awardwinning wireless internet provider EOL. The locally-owned company has just added a new function to its website, which allows people to search their home or business address to discover when ultrafast broadband will be accessible in their area.

An underground network of fibre optic cables is now being laid in Tauranga as part of the Government’s commitment to invest NZ$1.3 billion to deliver ultra-fast broadband to 75 per cent of the population by the end of 2019.

Plans to leverage interactive learning experiences offered by exhibits and displays at Classic Flyers aviation museum through the new Young Flyers homework programme, are taking off.

The Young Flyers NZ homework programme was initiated by Classic Flyers NZ education coordinator Margit Barreras, who saw the museum’s facilities as a great way to help parents and teachers by enriching learning. Only a few months on from charting this course, the programme is cleared for take-off.

“The world of aviation is rich in maths, science and language concepts and tying the excitement of this world in with homework and learning has been seen to increase student interactivity and productivity across the globe.”

Young Flyers is gaining altitude, with the latest development being a purpose-built Mac computing and teaching lab set up with the help of James Johnston at The Technology Centre.

This week Young Flyers welcomed YMCA afterschool programme students along to an orientation afternoon. YMCA Tauranga’s OSCAR coordinator Valdina Camille-Dawson says it offers a wonderful and exciting opportunity for children to learn in a unique way.

“Our goal at Young Flyers is to create a homework programme that encourages discovery, exploration and imagination through the world of aviation,” says Margit.

The Young Flyers Homework Programme will initially run Monday and Tuesdays from 3.30- 5.30pm for pupils aged over eight years, including pupils from some of the YMCA Tauranga’s afterschool care programme centres. Young Flyers is also introducing Study Boot Camp to help high school students with their study ahead of mid-year and end of year exams. This will run on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-3pm.

Fundraising takes on a worldly flavour at Greenpark School this Saturday with an International Gala to raise money to help senior students take part in a Korean exchange.

The gala, which is the first of its kind to be held at the school, will offer food and performances from around the world, along with standard fair attractions and amusements.

Tauranga RSA in pretty in pink fundraiser In a departure from its traditional focus on supporting returned servicemen, Tauranga RSA has thrown itself behind a women’s fundraising event next week.

The Pink Ribbon Breakfast next Friday aims to raise at least $500 for the Breast Cancer Foundation, in what functions manager Christine Kroll hopes will be a fun event for all women.

“A group of us decided it would be great to put on something special to raise money for breast cancer to show there is a lot more to the RSA than a lot of people think. We wanted to show we’re a part of the community.”

Christine says the breakfast, which includes a fashion parade put on by some Greerton shops, will make a fun event for all.

She thanked the restaurant’s suppliers for sponsorship that enables them to donate $10 to the cause from every $20 ticket.

Christine was optimistic of getting at least 50 people to the event, having already sold more than 20 tickets.

“Everybody knows someone who has been affected by cancer, whether its family or friends, so we thought it was a great event to get behind.”

Keeping a lid on heating costs Tauranga Energy Services insulation installer James Mace in the ceiling – the area of the house that loses the most heat without insulation.

Home-owners who have their house insulated can expect at least a 20 per cent saving in winter power bills.

This is the experience of Air Con Tauranga salesman Owen Teague, who has been promoting the Government’s Heat Smart insulation subsidy scheme for almost two years.

“There is a bit of a misunderstanding among many that it will

literally heat the house itself, but by helping retain any heat in the house it saves homeowners a lot on heating.”

He says insulation cuts power bills by at least 20 per cent or 30 per cent or more, especially if there was nothing in the ceiling, because that’s where so much heat escapes.

Owen says the Heat Smart scheme is helping make insulation a lot more affordable for many,

with the owners of a 100sqm home saving at least $1000 on the typical $30004000 cost.

The subsidy of a third of the cost up to $1300 is available for all homes built before 2000 and is not based on an income test.

Insulation scheme popular in Bay In less than three years 5400 Western Bay of Plenty homes have been insulated as part of the Government’s ‘Warm Up New Zealand: Heat Smart’ scheme.

The coloured areas show parts of the Bay of Plenty where there has been a strong uptake in the Government’s insulation scheme.

Warm homes are healthy homes Keep warm, keep healthy – this is the message coming out of research on the benefits of a warm and insulated home.

The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority are promoting the wide-ranging health benefits provided by warm housing in its push to get more houses insulated under the Warm Up New Zealand: Heat Smart scheme which is subsidising insulation on older homes.

Research by He Kainga Oranga, Otago University’s Wellington School of Medicine and Health Sciences’ Housing and Health Research programme, has repeatedly shown associations between poor housing and ill health.

Meanwhile, another major study into the impact of conditions in the home environment on the development of wheezing among children is being conducted by a team of New Zealand housing and health researchers.

The programme, which covers a third of the cost of installing insulation up to $1300, has been running for almost three years.

On Wednesday Energy Minister Phil Heatley trumpeted the programme’s success after it reached the milestone of 150,000 homes insulated nationwide.

The scheme aims to retrofit a total of at least 188,500 New Zealand homes over four years.

The grants are only available to homes built before 2000.

“Each of those 150,000 homes now insulated represents an average of between two and three

New Zealanders, so we can be confident that around 450,000 New Zealanders are now better off.

“Insulated homes are easier and cheaper to heat to healthy temperatures. Warmer homes mean fewer visits to the doctor, and greater productivity with less need to take time off work or school.”

On top of the 5400 homes insulated, 1200 of these properties have also had grants of up to $500 each towards the cost of installing a clean, effective heater. A total of 4250 houses have been insulated under the scheme in the Tauranga

council area and 1150 in the Western Bay district area.

Revaluations mean rate increase halved There has been a lot of concern from the Western Bay district about the forecast increase in the Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s general rates for the district as signaled in the draft Regional Council’s Ten Year Plan.

In the draft plan for 2012/13, the total general rates payable for a property in the Western Bay district with an average property value were forecast to be $173 per year, an increase of $29 from last year.

This increase is now forecast to be halved to an increase of about $14.50 for an average property because of the property value equalisation process that the regional

council has just undertaken. This process looks at changes in property values across the region and spreads the general rate burden according to property value relativities.

Property values in the Western Bay have dropped substantially during the past year – due to the impacts of Psa and the global financial downturn.

The ‘average’ land value has dropped $50,000 to $265,000. Since average values in Tauranga and the eastern part of the region haven’t changed overall, adjustments have been made to spread the general rate burden accordingly. This has meant that the total general rates forecast

for an ‘average’ property in Rotorua have increased for next year from the draft plan, while Western Bay’s total general rates forecast increase has dropped from that in the plan out for consultation.

This week, the regional council will be hearing from submitters on the Ten Year Plan who will no doubt be concerned about rates increases. I also was very concerned about what the plan meant for residents of the Western Bay, who will undoubtedly be finding the going tough financially.

The drop in property values has produced a tiny silver lining – but I am looking forward to deliberations on submissions, so we can see if we can pare off some other costs in the plan.

A soprano, a violinist and a rare organ Concert-goers are in for a treat in more ways than one when Bay of Plenty Symphonia presents its Ryman Healthcare Showtime concert series at Baycourt on Saturday May 26 at 7.30pm and Sunday 27 at 2pm.

Square pegs Do you know a square peg?

No two children are exactly the same but the difference between some children and their peers can be so pronounced that the child finds it difficult to learn in the class and socialise in the playground.

Some children just seem to ‘fit in’ wherever they are or whatever they are doing, while other children often feel like a square peg trying to fit into a round hole.

Mixed abilities

Many of these children can be well above average in areas such as imagination, spoken vocabulary, memory, or interest in often complicated topics but they may, at the same time, struggle to meet the National Standard for handwriting, have difficulty paying attention in class, or interacting socially.

This mix of abilities can often be confusing for the parents or caregivers and teachers of the child and of course the child themselves.

Research has shown that a number of children exhibiting these characteristics are in fact ‘twice exceptional’.

Twice exceptional is the term given to

gifted learners of high intellectual ability who have learning disabilities. A twice exceptional diagnosis can be difficult for non-experts to make as these traits are often hidden from view with the high abilities masking the child’s learning disabilities, which in turn depress their true potential.

The Tauranga Explorers Club, the Tauranga Branch of New Zealand Association for Gifted Children, is hosting a talk

by Lynn Berresford of Indigo Assessment and Counselling which they hope will help to shed light on the issue of having a twice exceptional child.

Common indicators

Lynn Berresford is a registered psychologist based in Auckland with a M. Ed (Hons) and more than 30 years experience working with gifted children and individuals who learn differently.

Lynn says there is no clear-cut profile of a twice exceptional child because the nature and causes of twice exceptionality are so varied. One example of a twice exceptional child may be doing extremely well in

As a result, the list of what defines a twice exceptional child is long and can be confusing but a couple of characteristics that may be more common include not doing well on timed tests, not responding consistently to auditory instructions, failure to complete or hand in work, and being disruptive in class.

Kea and Cub scouts dib dobbing at Omanu Omanu/Arataki Scouts could be seen all over the Mount for more than 30 years before the numbers began to fall and the pack ceased to be some years ago.

But now they’re back; with the parents of two Omanu families – the McCahills and Duncans – steeping up to get a new pack running.

A total of 32 children are now involved in the programme, with a waiting list comprising 12 more children waiting for additional adult leaders to come forward to lead both Kea and Cubs groups.

The good news doesn’t stop there for the resurgent bunch – Aquinas College students Connor Bourne, Jacob Jones, Zak Fitzgerald and head boy Joe Kirtley spent Tuesday lending a hand with the much-needed revamp of the group’s scout hall, at the bequest of their school.

The programme, which teaches Christian values and promotes self-worth to 4500 young people at 18 schools across the Tauranga region, is supported by fundraising activities like this Chipmunks Fun Friday event, held twice a year.

Cool Bananas Youthwork Trust youth worker Garth Collings says the event is always a huge success, combining free time on the playland equipment with organised activities.

The Cool Bananas programme aims to inspire children to excel through a focus on combining learning with fun and adventure.

The programme has been designed to fit into the school curriculum and is taught by a team of experienced youth workers. It uses activities such as games, story-telling, lessons from the bible and multimedia presentations.

Talented writer Young author Celine Murray thinks it is a bit of a laugh she has sold more copies of her book than her mother.

In fact the Year 13 Otumoetai College student has sold more copies of her book than all 30 Bay of Plenty writers involved in the Oceanbooks publishing project.

“It’s just because it’s the cheapest book,” says Celine, whose short story collection Seven to Seventeen includes 10 short stories written during the past 10 years since she was seven.

Celine, 17, says she enjoys writing but is modest about her ability, which has seen seven of the 10 stories in the collection receive awards in literary competitions.

“I had seen a competition for young writers so I encouraged her to write a story to enter it – and she ended up winning a cheque for $100.

“So you can imagine how excited she was by that and she was soon entering more competitions – I think most of the money she has accumulated in her bank account has come from her prize money.”

Following Celine’s success selling her first print run of 30 books, she has had another run of books made up and last week shared her writing tips with Katikati College creative writing students.

The jolts rocked her glass-filled sanctuary, smashing it to pieces and leaving it in ruins.

She will find out if the studio and South Brighton home are salvageable in the coming weeks, but that hasn’t stopped her from picking up the pieces, of glass, and moving on.

The talented artist will bring those pieces, in a variety of mosaic constructions, to the Dunkley’s Great New Zealand Craft Show when it returns to Tauranga on the last weekend of May after a two year hiatus.

Her Quake Art comprises no hand cut Christchurch glass artist Jasmine Keir will visit Tauranga this month with ‘Quake Art’ pieces, with every piece included exactly constructed from glass that smashed in her how it was found on her studio floor.

“I just put the pieces together, like a giant Heathcote Valley studio.

“I’ve got so much broken glass - it’ll last me for years.’’

Attendees of the show will have the choice of buying ready-made crafts or the supplies with which to make them, with workshops offered on a number of different pursuits.

The show is at TECT Arena, Baypark, 10am-5pm, May 25-27. Tickets cost $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and students and $5 for school children. Admittance is free for children younger than five.

Night time golf for Tauranga greens Stars on Pars bring athletes together.

The unique nine hole fundraising event, at the Mount Maunganui Golf Club on May 30, aims to bring together athletes and their families as they embark on a fun night of golf.

Teams will consist of four players and four supporters, who are allowed to help players find their balls in the during the night-time tournament.

Each team begins on a different tee, with an Ambrose format used based on the team’s combined handicap.

Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre sport leagues coordinator Steven Dickson is expecting the league to be a hit with its mix of popular codes – basketball, netball, soccer, turbo touch and ultimate frisbee.

“The league is a great way to keep active and have a bit of fun over winter and the Business House competition caters for everyone – from social teams through to those that compete really hard.”

The Business House league has not been offered at QEYC for 12 months, but has been confirmed for the rest of this year, so Steven expects to see the competition build as teams settle in.

The first 10-week league starts on Thursday May 24, with 35-minute games held from 6-9pm.

However if you would prefer to play indoor netball every week, you may still have a chance to join the league which started last week. Both leagues are for mixed teams, with a maximum of three males playing at a time.

“If there is enough interest, we might be able to add some teams. Both leagues are always very popular and are a great way to keep active – so if people are thinking about getting involved, they really need to do it now while there are still spaces left.”

This year’s Treasured Art Exhibition by the Rotary Club of Tauranga Sunrise will have a twist, with organisers adding a silent auction to the third annual event.

Last year’s auction at Ingham-Sears Mercedes Benz on Totara Street, Mount Maunganui, sold $55,000 worth of art.

Organisers are hoping to match that figure this year, with money raised from the event going towards the youth development programme Kiwi Can. The charity provides life skills and values programmes for 5 to 12-year-olds at primary and intermediate schools.

Project co-convenor Ross Brown says they have an array of art works from professional artists, and art

collectors, with some of the works being donated.

Ross says an invitation-only gala night will be held on Thursday May 24, with the exhibition open to the public from 10am-3pm on the following Friday and Saturday.

“We have added another part to the event and that’s a silent auction. So it will be an art exhibition, sale and silent auction.”

The feature artist for this year’s event is international artist Peter Wallers, who is providing art from his personal collection and his latest works for auction.

More than 80 works will be displayed with 29 being auctioned on the gala evening.

The auction will also include a two metre Maori portrait by aerosol artist Owen Dippie.

“Give contest a go” – young fruit grower For Tauranga’s Campbell Wood the last 12 months have been exceptional, thanks largely to his kiwifruit career.

Not only did he win the 2011 Bay of Plenty Young Fruit Grower of the Year title, but he was also awarded the Zespri-funded Bruce Stowell Scholarship for three months in Italy.

“It’s been fantastic. I’ve learned so much about myself and the industry and even now I don’t think I fully realise how much I’ve gained,” says Campbell, who returned from Italy in late April.

The 22-year-old is vine manager for organic and conventional kiwifruit orchards owned by Kathy and Dave Goodwin of Pyes Pa. They encouraged him to enter the young grower competition and now Campbell is urging other young fruit growers to give it a go too.

“You gain so much from the experience. It helps you to grow as a person and you also meet others in the industry you might not otherwise,” says Campbell, who represented the region at the national Young Grower of the Year contest in Rotorua last year.

During his three months in Latina Italy, Campbell saw the devastation the bacterial disease Psa-V has caused to kiwifruit vines there. Despite that, Campbell has every confidence in the future of his chosen industry.

“It has made me more eager to be part of it and I have every confidence in the long term future of the New Zealand kiwifruit industry.”

Part of that future relies on bright young people like Campbell and it is for this reason the industry holds the young fruit grower competitions, which are open to anyone under the age of 30 who

“Customers love it – I think it’s because of the special hollandaise sauce we make ourselves.”

The cafe has also earned a great reputation as a venue for after-hours functions with its ability to put on a special menu to suit different budgets and tastes. The venue can cater for up to 60 and has become popular for club dinner meetings.

Soup’s up as winter approaches While researching the logistics of soup delivery, I found a company called Soupcycle and was somewhat surprised that there are soup cyclers in the UK, delivering chilled soup by bicycle to homes and offices.

So it means I’m not that crazy after all and if they can do it, so can I. Except I’ll try for the hot soup

Thai Pumpkin and Peanut Soup Serves six Ingredients 1 large pumpkin, peeled and diced 2 red onion, peeled and diced 2cm piece of ginger 3-4 garlic cloves 5-6 birds eye chillis (or more – it’s up to you) 1 teaspoon dried cumin 1 disc of palm sugar 2 large dessertspoons peanut butter

200mls coconut cream 1 large bunch of coriander, finely chopped Sea salt and freshly ground pepper Water or vege stock to cover

Method Cut all the vegetables small.

Sweat all the vegetables, chilli and garlic together slowly in a large pot with a little oil. Add the stock or water and simmer for about half an hour then add the peanut butter, coriander, palm sugar, seasoning and coconut cream. Blend the whole mix in a blender then return to the pot and reduce to desired thickness.

This soup will taste better the next day, so make as much as you can and enjoy.

And now with winter winds biting us with their chill, I thought it appropriate that I can share some secrets of how to whip up a decent soup for these colder months that are now upon us.

There are plenty of good pouch and canned soups available at the supermarket but check the label and often you will find additives and lots of salt. So how can you make tasty a soup without adding some high sodium booster? You can make your own stock of course, or you can try my secret

of vegetable soup preparation as explained in this week’s recipe.

Basically, use good quality vegetables cut small and cook well, add fresh herbs, small amounts of sea salt and pepper, blend well and serve the next day. This allows the soup to develop flavour.

Scotch fillet with the taste of Italy It’s time to spice it up with a bit of Italian this week.

This is one of my signature dishes, one I am sure you will enjoy and this one I made on GMTV, which you can see on TVNZ On Demand. Enjoy with a class of red wine, of course!

Braciole Serves 4

Ingredients 6 x 1cm-thick slices beef scotch fillet or topside steak, trimmed 2 tbs finely chopped flat-leaf parsley 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tbs finely grated parmesan cheese 2 tbs toasted pine nuts 2 tbs olive oil 1/2 cup (125ml) dry red wine 2 cans chopped tomato 1/4 cup sliced basil leaves, shredded Method 1. Combine the parsley, garlic, parmesan and pine nuts in a small bowl and season with sea salt and black pepper.

2. Lay the mixture over each steak and scatter with parsley mixture. Roll up to enclose and secure with toothpicks.

3 Heat the olive oil in a large frypan over medium-high heat and cook the rolls for 3-4 minutes, turning, until browned all over. Transfer to a plate and cover loosely with foil.

4. Add wine to hot pan and boil until reduced by half. Add the canned tomatoes and bring to the boil, then simmer over low heat for 5 minutes or until thickened.

Season to taste with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Return rolls and any juices to pan, then scatter with basil and cook for 3 minutes or until heated through.

Slice rolls in half and serve with soft polenta, if desired.

The Good Food Trading Co. owner Jamie Blennerhassett says while the original deal was a loss leader, and as such required some strict criteria around it, the new one comes with no strings attached.

Jamie says the new deal will mean there will be no limit on how many bottles a customer can buy and no deal around accompanying purchases.

“Clearly the big players are making quite a nice little profit from these everyday staples when we as very small players can come along and come up with a formula that has ourselves, the suppliers and ultimately the consumer all winning.”

The standard milk will sell under the Nosh Essentials brand while the organic milk will be sold under the Green Valley Organic label.

“There was definitely some real risk involved with our initial offering as we were losing close to $1 per bottle.

We therefore did not know how sustainable it was likely to be. The move however resulted in a fantastic response from the public which told us they wanted cheaper milk and from it we’ve been able to go away and come up with this great new deal that will be truly sustainable for all involved.”

AIMS Games set new record Registrations for this year’s AIMS Games have overwhelmed organisers.

More surgeries at Tauranga Hospital More patients at Tauranga Hospital will get their operations sooner as a result of a $7 million investment by the Government.

Health Minister Tony Ryall says the funding will expand productivity programmes led by surgeons, anaesthetists, theatre nurses and other health professionals to improve quality and reduce delays for patients having operations.

Extra funding has been awarded to 11 district health boards (DHBs), including the Bay of Plenty District Health Board, to implement 21 projects which cover all aspects of surgery, from a patient’s first specialist appointment, to their surgery, recovery and follow up appointments.

Projects being implemented include: • The Productive Operating Theatre (TPOT) programme, which improves the way operating theatres are run. For example, keeping equipment in set places so theatre time isn’t wasted trying to find equipment.

Twelve DHBs are now implementing TPOT in 43 operating theatres with South Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, Taranaki and Northland DHBs being funded this year.

• Improving pre-admission procedures to reduce the number of surgeries cancelled or delayed. The way patients are prepared for surgery is being redesigned at Nelson, Marlborough and Taranaki DHBs this year.

• The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programme, which will help people recover more quickly and safely after their operation, so they have fewer complications and get home to their families sooner.

BOPDHB is being funded for an ERAS project this year for patients who have had colon surgery, which will then be rolled out to Waikato, Taranaki, Lakes District and Tairawhiti DHBs. “DHBs are reporting significant improvements since the productivity programmes were launched in 2010,” says Tony.

“Tauranga Hospital has reduced the number of patients being cancelled on the day of surgery by 70 per cent through changing their pre-admission process.

“A nurse now phones patients before their surgery to identify patients too unwell for surgery so they can be rescheduled and another patient booked in. This means fewer empty spots on operating theatre schedules.”

With a 25 per cent jump to a new record of 5800 intermediate–aged pupils confirmed for the September tournament in Tauranga.

Tournament director Vicki Semple was “blown away” by the jump in registration numbers for the New Zealand Community Trust AIMS Games which have just closed. She says organisers are now working hard to ensure they can cope with the increase on last year’s 4600 competitors.

The rise in numbers has come from more schools taking part (151 from 121 last year) and returning schools sending more teams.

After a push to make it an international event, two Australian schools will be competing this year, while observers from another school will check out the event with a view to taking part in 2013.

accommodation and are looking at having an audio-visual broadcast of the opening ceremony to players unable to be seated in TECT Arena, because of limited capacity.

Available sports grounds should cope with the added numbers, with the only challenge being the number of hockey teams, which has risen from 39 to 49. A meeting will be held this week to see if the extra teams can be catered for.

“We just don’t know how we can do it. Logistically it’s already a huge challenge for schools.”

Standing by the point History’s double standards over airport ‘subsidy’ Airport versus gallery.

My original statement that the airport is in effect one of the most heavily subsidised activities of council still stands despite Cr Faulkner introducing and airport versus gallery matter into the story. This was never about the airport and the gallery; both are proper activities of council as are libraries, swimming pools, parks and reserves etc.

All are important activities of a vibrant and growing city. The point I was making is that the airport, rightly or wrongly is not user pays but is ratepayer funded by virtue of the rentals it receives from the industrial land leases nearby. In the 2011/12 financial year budgeted airport operating expenses of $2.6million are funded by aeronautical revenue of $1.6million a shortfall of $1million that is met by industrial land rentals of $2.5million.

There would be few activities of council that would not meet Cr Faulkner’s definition of being “self funding “and “user pays” i.e. non ratepayer funded were they to enjoy the luxury of such levels of non-core income. I am not saying this is wrong I am just asking for Cr Faulkner to be fair and transparent in his writing on council matters.

The writer of the letter in the Weekend Sun (11 May 2012) agrees that the Maori were “badly treated by the British.”

However, and in no way intended as a justification, wasn’t that the inevitable and tragic accompaniment to such historical invasions, all over the world?

History shows this. Some were more barbaric events than others, and left terrible consequences.

Nor could the Maori be portrayed as benevolent invaders, or kindly claimants of the land they “appropriated”, at great cost to the rightful owners, let alone merciful to their victims - often their own kind. Nor was it necessarily a justifiable occurrence, but proof of their proud warrior status, or simple greed for someone else’s land. More land. Or other justifications. The sporting events of the time? So it appears.

But why was it acceptable in the context of their own traditional life, to endure all the horrors involved in such events, as a fact of life, but not from the Colonists ?

The knives cut as deeply, whoever

wielded them, and the cruelty and wounds were as devastating, whoever the victims were, or which side. Why the double standards, and why are some always kept “in our faces”, as heinous crimes, while the other side is not acknowledged for what it was. A nasty, criminal fact of life.

Perhaps one day we will all face our own legacy in these things, and come to terms with each other’s.

Car drivers as bad as smokers?

Re: your diatribe in Rogers Rabbits you have again targeted smokers. I didn’t reply to your first outburst on this subject but reply this time. I must as I feel it’s a personal insult to myself and other smokers.

I have been smoking longer than you have walked this earth and I do respect non-smokers as when visiting such people’s homes or flats I abstain from smoking and I don’t go outside to partake in smoking. I don’t smoke until I leave their company.

Another statement that you make is that we will be a drain on the health budget. In actual fact we won’t because we pay taxes on our earnings and we pay a high tax on the tobacco products, so in reality we are paying three times the tax that non smokers pay therefore we have prepaid for any health problems we may incur on ourselves.

I had six sons and their mother and I were both smokers and yet only one smoked and it wasn’t smoking that killed him, it was a truck smashing into his car killing both he and his lady. So who is right, you or me? I’m prepared to defend my smoking, how about you and your car usage?

Cossie Club ‘theatricals’ Maurice Kelly, whose Cosmopolitan Club sold the $6 million lemon to TCC, is now bleating unbelievably about pedestrian danger, yet the new Clubrooms are built on land that should have been used for overflow parking. At present anyone can use the vacant 5,000m2 grounds to park vehicles on and what on earth makes Mr Kelly think pedestrians don’t have to cross the street to get to Blake Park if the multi-million ex- Clubrooms are ever demolished and they should not be.

While not a Museum supporter I could, along with many Tauranga people support the modest Museum concept. Interestingly, I recently saw what looks like a serious proposal to locate a Tauranga City Museum at the now ‘unoccupied’ ex-Mount Cosmopolitan Club building at Blake Park. From reading and checking out some of the information for myself, I came to the conclusion it looked like a good plan.

Only some of the current 100 odd parking spaces would be required for a Museum.

Why wouldn’t the Tauranga Museum Trust want to go down this path? The premises are ideal, almost to the point of being purpose-built and could be leased long-term. Costs other than refurbishment (if any) would be virtually nil and if genuine, dedicated Museum people are involved then the Community Funding and volunteers could handle that cost.

One huge plus is the TCC saving of $1 million p.a. in artefact storage fees.

Looks like all Councillors have received this information so why has there been no public feedback?

I think that the Tauranga public should hear from the Tauranga Museum Trust with its views on what seems to be something sensible for a change.

Tsunami warning idea G’Day Brian, I think that the Tsunami-Warning suggestion put forward by MD in Letters, 4 May (plane towing warning sign) is a brilliant idea, one of the best I’ve heard, of course it needs some fine tuning.

It would need to be sent up in other languages such as Maori, Pinyin, Braille for the hard of hearing, and an extra large version towed by a 747 in case any Aussies are in town.

And just think of the side benefits, like the exercise one would get tearing outside with your survival gear every-time an aircraft flies over.

Now some people may think this system would not work at night, no worries, every one would be issued with a powerful torch and binoculars and maybe the odd searchlight set up downtown, that should do the trick. I reckon an idea like that is worth free membership of the Tauranga AFI Club any day, I think we should spend a few $M on the idea, we could put it on the rates, the people of Tauranga won’t mind, they’re used to it being done by AFI members on the council… Oh by the way, in case of false-alarms, we would need half a dozen SAMs. (Surface to Air Missiles) Push it, it’s a great idea.

The madmen and women of the Matamata council want to charge by the toilet, the madness is spreading. As usual a lefty action against the richer among us apart from schools of course.

If they want to charge for toilets a fairer way would be to simply look at the water used rather than how many dunnies.

Many houses have two to three toilets and not always by choice they are simply there when one buys the property.

There may only be two people living in the house it would be crazy mad to charge two people with three toilets the same rates as say a house with one toilet and 10 people doing their business in the one toilet.

Come on councils of New Zealand get you silly caps off and don your thinking caps. New Zealanders have had enough of the stupidity, arrogance and the rapacious activities of our councils. Please ratepayers vote these ingrates out at the next election.

Te Puke post box removal Opposing euthanasia The postbox, properly called a “Post receiver” has been removed from the site near the intersection of Cameron Road and Queen Street in Te Puke. When my Mum, a regular user of the box, phoned NZ Post to ask what the story was, she was told that it had been vandalised, and that the fire damage was too great for it to be repaired. NZ Post does not intend to replace the box and may in fact remove others also in Te Puke.

Apparently vandalism of these boxes is rife around the WBOP at the moment.

It seems that there is a sector of our communities who believe that they have the right to do whatever they like, but who cares how that affects the rights of others.

When my Mum remonstrated with the NZ Post person about the lack of a box in the area mentioned above, and pointed out there are a lot of elderly people living in the area who post their mail there, she was told that they must go to get their groceries every week so they can post their mail then. Having become cynical in recent years I wonder if this is another way of NZ Post cutting their costs, after all if we are only to receive mail three times a week and only post mail once a week, NZ Post is surely going to save on wages, because many of us will stop using NZ Post and use other mail services.

Removing my cynical hat and getting back to the problem today, this is a service which is needed by many in the community... I intend to contact our MP, and NZ Post to try to get the box

replaced. If other people do the same we might get the message to NZ Post that this is a service which should not be removed. John Wightman of the avenues (Voluntary euthanasia, Friday 11 May) asks if is significant that most opposing euthanasia belong to a certain unnamed, foreign-owned church.

The significance for me is that if Christ did establish an ongoing church two millennia ago then surely it would be absolutely pro-life, Moreover John calls us pro-lifers, gullible. Rather, those who believe Ms Street’s proposed safeguards will control and limit euthanasia, are, I believe, the gullible ones.

We contend, as in Holland, the euphemistic word “voluntary” soon becomes “compulsory”.

John’s use of the word “corrupt” is also, I feel a bit strong.

Unemployment progress:

On TV3’s The Nation last weekend, there was a report on the Mayor and Council in Otorohanga.

They have turned around the problem of unemployed youth in town, by working in close co-operation with all the aspects of the problem and together with employers in the town and their college, they have reached a stage where the bureaucrats have now withdrawn some funding, because of the success of the scheme. (Typical dumb logic of course.)

My question: Otorohanga is not that far away. It must have been known about before this, so why have we not explored it, with a view to starting the same scheme in some way or another, here? R McGuinness, Tauranga.

More controls on young drivers The AA quotes NZ as having the highest rate of road deaths per 100,000 population in 2011. 6.4%. Australia being the closest with 5.7% and Britain with only 3.1%.

There has been a lot of talk regarding road safety but I have yet to see anyone taking action with regard to the basic cause of traffic misbehaviour.

We must start with a more stringent control on youthful drivers, who like anyone else have to stretch their muscles to see just how far they can push the envelope. It is at this stage that enforcement must show the limits.

Unfortunately one only has to drive down any road to see the younger generation in action, speeding, ignoring Give Way and Stop signs and acting like idiots trying to prove that they are able to drive better than anyone else. This behaviour having been largely ignored because of the lack of local enforcement then spreads onto the main highway.

I have been trying for the past five years to get some traffic enforcement in Papamoa, Mt Maunganui areas. I have made contact with both local and Government authorities and apart from meaningless replies and a visit from a patrol car for a matter of two hours in 2008 little seems to have been done to reduce offending in this area.

The then Minister of Police, Mr Joyce, suggested that if speeding continued I should contact my local Police Station.

The reply from the lady on the other end of the telephone at the station told me that they only had one patrol vehicle and they can’t be everywhere, in other words “Suck it up”. I still see vehicles ignoring the Stop sign in Central Parade and Dee Street.

If there was more action with the basic areas I am sure it would benefit elsewhere.

Give it a try and save more lives.

The English version of the Treaty of Waitangi used by the Waitangi Tribunal is not a lie or political manipulation as claimed by R.McGuinness (letters 11 May). It is the version signed by Governor Hobson in 1840 with his official seal.

It was signed by Waikato chiefs. It was not an exact translation of the Waitangi Maori version, but Governor Hobson chose to put his seal on it and make it official.

It was his treaty. It has been the official English version from that day to this.

It’s undoubtedly as good an album as I can remember coming out of the Bay in the past 25 years but every time I get ready to write about it, something with a more pressing time constraint comes up. And so it is this week, as I’m going to delay it again by a couple more paragraphs.

Because there’s a concert on at Baycourt next Friday and if I don’t mention it now then next week’s Sun may be too late. And it’s a concert that many of you may be interested in.

Pauline Scanlon, the lovely Irish singer who was such a stand-out at the last Tauranga Arts Festival, is returning to town, and this time she’s in the company of three other top Irish women folksingers.

Calling themselves the Celtic Divas, the quartet – Noriana Kennedy, Nicola Joyce and Eilis Kennedy are the other three – represent a remarkable cross-section of the best contemporary Irish ‘new traditionalists’ and arrive here with an impressive-looking backing band. She’s currently, as well as playing the gypsy jazz of Bonjour Swing, exploring South American rhythms with various Brazilian percussionists. When I first met her many years ago she was flitting between serious folk music and singing 1930s jazz with one of Auckland’s most respectable ensembles.

In the meantime she has had a jump swing mini-big band called The Glamorous Mrs B, written and recorded an epic album of songs based around The Lord of the Rings, released a double CD retrospective of music made with her husband Robbie Laven, and, more recently, made an album of classicallythemed guitar and clarinet music.

As you can see, her skills and tastes span a world of music. (She also gives ukulele lessons, but let’s not go there…)

Many of these ventures have been with Robbie and so it is with the new album Flame, which opens with a flourish and is largely driven by his impressive gypsy jazz guitar. Having been to France to the annual Django Reinhardt festival, he is well-versed in the style and his guitar playing is remarkable.

The album kicks off with an instrumental, ‘Samois Swing’, a fine introduction to the ensemble, Robbie and Marion on acoustics, the very able Milan Wilshier on upright bass and the Arts’ son Oscar Laven on clarinet. Oscar’s playing throughout is one of the album’s highlights, be it the clarinet,

saxes in three sizes, or trumpet. It is hard not to imagine a big musical future for him.

The album mixes instrumentals and songs of Marion’s (and one little waltz from Robbie). She is a very distinctive songwriter, not opting for easy obvious melodies or structures but instead creating complex unusual tunes along with thought-provoking lyrics. The second song, ‘The Stranger Inside’, is a perfect example, with a curious introduction giving way to a catchy chorus, flailing acoustic guitar and an evocative muted trumpet.

Further on, songs skip through various gypsy jazz styles, some more obviously French - Marion writes and sings fluently in the language - some leaning towards Middle Eastern sounds (‘The Flame Once High’), some, like the eponymous ‘Bonjour Swing’, just a celebration of life and music. There is an enjoyably relaxed live vibe throughout.

This doesn’t do any justice– I haven’t even mentioned how good Marion’s singing is - to a CD that has had a constant place in my listening for the past few weeks. I like it more each time and have been playing it constantly for friends, all of whom are equally impressed.

Fantastic Not bad at all Dreadful

HUGO Dir: Martin Scorsese - Starring: Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Moretz, Ben Kingsley Hugo is a lovely little film, superbly controlled by Martin Scorsese, which will bring a warm glow to the heart of anyone with a love of early cinema. But that love just adds a cherry on the cake – this is terrific stuff from any perspective.

The story centres round the eponymous boy, living as an orphan in the nooks and crannies of Paris’ magnificent 1930s railway station. He makes sure the clock is wound and tries to repair a strange mechanical figure left with him by his father. A meeting with Moretz, a plucky young girl, sets him off on a quest to find the origins of the automaton, a mystery that leads to the heart of the birth of film. Saying much more is a bit of

a spoiler.

This rightly won several technical Oscars and the whole design and look of the film is stunning. The young leads are likeable without being too cutesy and there are delightful cameos from the likes of Sacha Baron Cohen as the love-lorn station guard in constant conflict with Hugo.

I’m not sure this is exactly a kids’ film, however.

It is certainly remarkably unpatronising towards younger viewers, and the wonders revealed in the second half will probably appeal more to adults, in the same way that magic is often more appreciated by grown-ups. But, whatever the audience, it’s a wonderful film.

The always-watchable Willem Defoe heads Downunder in The Hunter , searching for the last surviving Tasmanian tiger. He’s been hired by a military bio-tech company and it’s very hush-hush. But staying with a young family – still suffering after the husband’s mysterious disappearance – he finds himself drawn to them and into the conflict between loggers and conservationists, while his employers become increasingly threatening.

Beautifully shot in the vast Tassie bush this is a very well-made film, a slowburning wilderness drama that gradually ramps up the tension, with great work from Dafoe, a suspicious Sam Neill and Frances O’Connor (AI).

The Muppets totally won me over with its old-school charm. And it really is old school. An evil oil magnate wants to demolish the dilapidated Muppet Studio and Kermit – with the help of three fans – has to get the gang together again and put on one more show to raise money to save the studio. It’s a deft juggle of characters and jokes. Bret McKenzie’s songs are fine but it’s the old favourites that bring a tear to the eye and somehow Kermit – clearly a green sock with pingpong balls – is still more likeable and expressive than the likes of a motion-captured Tintin.

In The Perfect Age of Rock n Roll rundown reclusive star Spyder gives his first interview in 20 years. It centres on his memories of a 1991 road trip along Route 66, his band, their manager, a legendary old driver and the childhood friend he hopes will save his career. Amidst the drugs and old grievances they search for inspiration and the resultant road movie is smartly written with an involving story. It helps that the young cast (and Peter Fonda) create vivid sympathetic characters and also that the music – particularly at a pivotal juke joint where Pinetop Perkins and Hubert Sumlin are playing – is pretty good.

Three year glitch explained Does it bug you when your spouse leaves their toe nail clippings on the side of the bed, doesn’t flush the toilet or put the seat down, snores or belches at the dinner table?

A study commissioned by Warner Brothers to promote the release of the 2011 comedy ‘Hall Pass’ confirmed that some of these passion-killers have led to a swifter decline in relationships in the fast-paced 21st century. Celtic Divas comprises of four of Ireland’s most prominent folk singers, and they’re headed to New Zealand to share their unique sound; traditional Irish song, with modern Irish and American influences.

The group includes Pauline Scanlon, Eilis Kennedy, Nicola Joyce and Noriana Kennedy, and they’re backed by some of the finest folk musicians in the world.

Attendees can expect to be transported to Ireland for the evening.

Aviation lovers are in for a treat next week, with a chance to watch a Skyhawk fighter jet being reassembled to display at Classic Flyers aviation museum.

Bay of Plenty Classic Aircraft Trust chairman David Love says it is exciting to finally be taking delivery of the mothballed aircraft after repeated delays.

The trust, which owns the museum, had initially arranged for the jet to arrive in August 2011 but it will now arrive late Monday afternoon. On Tuesday morning a crane will shift the retired RNZAF Douglas A-4 Skyhawk into Classic Flyers hangar where it will be reassembled to display standard.

David says the team of RNZAF aircraft engineers are expected to take until Thursday to get the Skyhawk back to its prime, ready for display.

A raised area of seating will be set up on a stage alongside the Skyhawk for anyone interested to watch the jet’s fuselage and wings reassembled. For those unable to watch the plane’s reconstruction onsite it will be

captured with time-lapse photography, to be shown online. David says almost $30,000 had been raised for the Skyhawk through a community fundraising campaign, but he says they have just learnt GST will be charged on top, so they need to raise another $4500.

A special event to launch the Skyhawk will be held at the museum on June 10. Everyone who has donated to the campaign will be invited.

Rest home questions answered People struggling with the decision to move a loved one into a rest home are being invited to a series of seminars in Tauranga designed to answer questions people may have about rest home care.

Bay of Plenty Aged Care Facility manager Sharon Owen is holding the first of four seminars on May 22. She says a large proportion of people find themselves in a position of making a decision when they are feeling quite fragile, either following the decline of a parent’s health or a death of a loved one who was the main caregiver.

“It is not surprising then, that many of the feelings people experience about rest home care are perceived as being negative.

“Often this response is the normal ‘outworking’ of grief associated with these

losses and after a period of time most people feel far more positive.”

Sharon says the following are typical of a range of feelings people feel when faced with the decision of whether or not to put someone in a rest home: • Bewilderment/confusion, a sense of being overwhelmed e.g. by the process leading up to the event.

Waitawheta Angus tops in steaks Waihi Angus breeders Alistair and Patricia Sharpe, who produce some of the country’s tastiest steaks, were finalists in this week’s national Steak of Origin Producer of the Decade competition.

Alistair and Pat were Meat and Wool New Zealand Steak of Origin Grand Champions in 2008 with a sirloin steak which beat off 300 other entries.

The couple, who have bred Angus cattle on their Waitawheta stud since 1981, competed against nine others for the new award to mark the contest’s tenth anniversary.

“We didn’t win but it was an honour to be a finalist,” says Pat. Winners were Chris and Karren Biddles of Northland and Don Buchanan of Taumarunui was runnerup.

The yearling heifer the Sharpes entered in the Queen of Hearts Competition, run in conjunction with the steak event, came sixth out of 23 and sold for $4000 at the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Beef

Waitawheta Angus is among the smaller of the studs to enter, having just 160 breeding cows, grazing on 121 hectares in the foothills of the Kaimai Ranges near Waihi.

Distinction – one of the breeding bulls at Waitawheta Angus Stud, which has made the finals of the national Steak of Origin Producer of the Decade competition.

Pat says the decision to breed Angus cattle came about almost by accident.

“We bought the farm at the time of the 1981 floods which went right through this area and took out houses in Waikino. We had only three paddocks which weren’t flooded and the cows had to get up into the bush margins.

When we finally brought them down again it was the black ones which had survived the best, so we decided to concentrate on them.”

Thirty-one years on they are still happy with their decision.

“Angus have a great nature and are easy to handle. They are excellent mothers and great foragers.”

Mini tornado hits Papamoa homes A mini tornado ripped through Papamoa on Monday night destroying house roofs during a wild storm.

Firefighters were called to Longview Drive at about 8.30pm as residents

Class sizes set to increase Class sizes in Bay of Plenty schools are set to increase after the Government’s pre-Budget education changes announced on Wednesday. I still remember Mary, she was one of my Sunday School teachers and she fitted the stereotype!

She was a single, older lady, she could be frightening if she caught you climbing along the catwalks above our stage, and she knew what she wanted to teach us. I can thank Mary for teaching me the Apostles Creed; but I also have some very warm memories of Mary.

She cared for us. She didn’t need to teach Sunday School,

but she prepared well and invested her time in me and my mates.

When I think of women who have been a ‘spiritual mother’ to me, I always think of Mary.

As we celebrated Mothers’ Day at St Peter’s on Sunday, we honoured biological mothers, adoptive mothers and spiritual mothers and we talked about what the Bible means by honouring your mother. Ephesians 6.2 “Honour your father and mother.”

I think there are three things that we should do post Mothers’ Day to honour our mums.

1. Speak well of our mums.

It seems obvious but actually a lot of people subtly put their

mums down. What would you want to say in honour of your mum? What do you usually say about your mum? What is the tone of voice you assume when you talk about your mum?

2. Expect good things of your mum. Our expectations create a platform for each other to succeed on. My mum’s a lovely woman, but she’s recently been widowed and it would be easy for us to assume that she won’t manage so well now. Obviously there’s a lot of adjusting and grief to go through, but I’ve been encouraged to see my mum still keeping up many of the ways she helps others. We can help our mums age well by having positive as well as real-

istic expectations. I expect that my mum will still have words of wisdom to sow into my life.

3. We can overlook a few faults. My mum was always good at picking her battles and knowing what mattered and what didn’t, let’s keep extending that grace to our mums.

Let’s be careful not to make too much of an occasional unusual choice our mum’s make.

I think that these are very important biblical principles, that if we apply in our lives we can turn Mothers’ Day from a commercial excuse into a way of life that honours our Whaea.

Scripture declares in Proverbs 14:34 that “righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people”.

The Amplified Bible enlarges the meaning of the words: “uprightness and right standing with God (moral and spiritual rectitude in every area and relation) elevate a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people”.

Therefore, righteousness and sin are not relative terms based on whatever criteria we choose to measure sin and righteousness by. Righteousness that elevates, builds up or lifts up a nation or sin which is a reproach or a shame to any people are not measured by our own standards or society’s standards.

Rather, it is righteousness before a just and holy God - it is uprightness and right standing with the God of heaven and earth that exalts a nation. Likewise, it is sin that is self-seeking rebellion and unrighteousness before a holy God, that is a reproach to any nation and which ultimately will bring God’s just judgment on a nation.

God is love but God is holy and He cannot express His love and deny His holiness - nor can He express His holiness and deny His love. In His great love, He gives nations every opportunity to respond to His love and kindness that leads to repentance, that leads to a turning away from self-seeking rebellion and opposition to God and that results in a nation turning to God. But a time

comes when God’s justice and judgment must be outworked otherwise He would not be a holy and just God. Former Prime Minister Helen Clarke declared that New Zealand was no longer a Christian nation and that we are in fact now a secular nation. Laws passed in our nation that are contrary to righteousness and right standing with God and leadership in the nation that flouts God’s Word and His holiness, leaves us as a nation who are in sin and are thus a reproach to God. The writer to the Hebrew Church says in Hebrews 10:26-27, “For if we go on deliberately and willingly sinning after once acquiring the knowledge of the Truth, there is no longer any sacrifice left to atone for (our) sins (no further offering to which to look forward).

(There is nothing left for us then) but a kind of awful and fearful prospect and expectation of divine judgment and the fury of burning wrath and indignation which will consume those who put themselves in opposition (to God)”.

Biblical righteousness needs to be restored to our nation but it will take a move of God that begins with revival in the Church for that to happen. Dr Andrew Murray who wrote much on prayer stated that “a revived Church is the only hope for a dying world”. We need to be praying for such a revival.
