t tells us there is a definite demand for teenager employment if there was an easy way of connecting that pool of workers with the marketplace. nd that’s what -year-old entrepreneur osh allander seems to have done with his novel een obs website. ore than auranga kids have registered their availability for holiday employment on the ount aunganui ollege student’s website. ike -year-old ooper c ay, who didn’t have a ob for the holidays. ven though he was kind of looking . ow he’s made more than spreading mulch, shoveling sand into the kindy’ sandpit, mowing lawns, weed-eating and planting shrubs. e’s made -plus for ust two hours a day, five days a week, for a month. uite good money which did not e pect to make, says ooper from apamoa. nd he was outside where he loves to be, and earning money. nd he can be grateful to the ingenuity and entrepreneurial skills of a fellow ount aunganui ollege student osh allander for his break. osh couldn’t find a ob. e did a paper run for a year, says mum iona allander. ut he was looking for something different, something better paid to keep himself busy during the school holidays.

Car safety reminder

Police are reminding motorists to keep their vehicles safe this summer.

This comes after Police were called to a scene of a car fire on tableford Drive, in yes a, around 2.20am on Sunday.

A member of the public, who messaged the SunLive Facebook, says they were woken around 2am from a huge explosion that shook their house.“I went out for a look and it was a vehicle that’s always parked on the road, burning out.

Lightning show in Tauranga

Mother Nature put on a show of the electrical kind with a spectacular lightning storm last Friday.

MetService recorded a total 33,218 lightning strikes in the 24 hours from 9am Friday to 9am aturday, a figure raising the eyebrows of even the most senior meteorologist.

More than 80 per cent of the strikes – or 27,087 – took place over land in the North Island. “Friday was a classic case of all the ingredients mixing together for a volatile day of thunderstorms,” says MetService meteorologist Tui McInnes.

She’s known and respected across seven seas – from the Indian and Arctic oceans to the Gulf of Mexico – and loved by dozens of Russians, Scandinavians, Filipinos, Chinese and Indians.

But in her hometown, beyond the security gates of the Port of Tauranga in Hull Rd, Mount Maunganui, she is largely unknown.

Invisible, even.

She’s 87-year-old Mary Wilson – mother figure, protector, and giver to the world’s seafarers for 58 years through the United Seafarers’ Mission. It was a divine calling, and one decided for her.

“When I arrived in Tauranga with my husband John in 1960, a Presbyterian minister decided that because we were childless and didn’t know anyone in town, we wouldn’t have anything to do in the evenings,” says Mary.

As such, they were commandeered to assist at what was then the Seamen’s Centre – a haven for the lonely and needy delivered to Tauranga by the merchant navies of the world.

Nearly six decades later, this wisp of a woman on a cane still drives herself from Bayswater Retirement Village to the Seafarers’ Mission for her volunteer shift each Friday morning – like looking after the seaman from Myanmar who’s just arrived from the ‘Dark Side of the Moon’.

He’s wearing a Pink Floyd t-shirt. Some things transcend all cultures.

He’s in need of some Kiwi currency to buy food and clothes at the local mall, but the Mission throws in an extra helping of smiles and a dollop of international accord.

That’s gratis.

It is service deserving of an honours list, but the humble Mary Wilson would hear none of that. “I don’t think I am that good a person,” she says, “and I am not undervaluing my contribution because there are a lot of Mission volunteers”.

And Mary certainly didn’t want all of this exposure in The Weekend Sun. She doesn’t like the limelight, and we had to ambush her when she arrived for her shift last week. She would only talk if it helped the Mission and produced a few extra volunteers.

Residents in the Lakes Tauranga are being notified of smoke testing to find issues with the city’s wastewater network – set to take place in the area during the next few weeks. moke testing is a way of capturing in ow and infiltration’, says a council spokesperson. t is the best method of finding any leaks in our wastewater network, or incorrect connections. “Domestic houses are connected to our wastewater network, so the smoke itself will be seen at a gully traps and toilet vents.”

The test is being done citywide, and currently TCC is working in The Lakes area.

Two arrested following chase

Two people have been arrested following a Police pursuit across the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

The pursuit led Police from Rotorua to Kawerau and surrounding forestry areas.

A Police media spokesperson says it was initiated following a eeing driver incident near the Okere Falls area on Saturday.

“Police tried to stop a vehicle that was travelling towards Kawerau as the vehicle had no registration plates on it.

“The driver failed to stop and Police followed the vehicle for a time.

adventure – a sweet, innocent Anglican girl out of Sussex, inland from Brighton, in the UK. She got tangled with “a bloke in tweeds and smoking a pipe”. Sounded English, looked English, but he was a Kiwi.

He was with the forest service, checking logs for the Japan trade at the Port of Tauranga. That’s where they got involved with the Mission and Mary’s eyes were opened to the underbelly of life – hard liquor, contraband, drugs and ship girls.

“We would joke about it,” says Mary.

“The girls would stand at the bottom of the gangway with tears in their eyes, waving goodbye to the seamen. At the same time another ship would be sailing over the horizon and into port.”

The tears dried up pretty quickly. To begin with, Mary struggled with the ship girls. “It was just the morality of it. I came from a sheltered background.

“But when I boiled it down, they were just girls who’d gone wrong but were quite decent underneath.”

‘The boys’ would be looking for friendship, for comfort, from the girls who worked the NZ coastal traders.

“The port was growing and seamen needed somewhere to go and things to do.” ships, we couldn’t cold-shoulder them as well.”

Mary held out her hand. Those were the days when the ports were open and booze, drugs and ship girls were commodities.

After 9/11, America decreed that if NZ wanted a container trade, its ports need to be fenced and secure. That also took care of the ship girls, the contraband and the drugs.

Those were the days when Mary and John would take work home. “Ships would be in town for two or three weeks,”says Mary. “So we would take the seamen to visit farms, as many had never been to the countryside.

“We’d also take them home to stay. We had pets and we would borrow the neighbours’ kids because they loved kids. They were nice people and lonely people, because they missed their families.

“It was a different relationship then – they became our long-term friends.” But don’t mention politics – especially to the Russian seamen during the Cold War. Never talk politics! “It was good because they would show us family photos and suddenly they weren’t Reds under the bed,” says Mary. “They were normal human beings, just like us.”

Her service to the Seafarers’ began with the Seamen’s Centre – an initiative of combined churches, Rotary and businessmen.

“The port was growing and seamen needed somewhere to go and things to do.”

There were several incarnations of the Seamen’s Centre over the years. First in rented rooms on Totara St, surrounded by sand and scrub.

The British Sailors’ Society then demanded the port find room for a facility onsite, where the number one coolstore now stands.

Then came another centre, right on the wharf and, later, a site just outside the gates on Hull Rd.

The facilities got bigger, better and brighter – a bar to stop the seamen getting into trouble at the old Mount Maunganui Hotel, as well as basketball courts and a kitchen.

“Lots of hamburgers and breakfast fry-ups, which the seamen liked after their onboard menu. he wharfies also got a sniff of the fry-ups. By 2008, there was the Seamen’s Centre operating just outside the port security gates and Ken and Joy Camp’s Seafarers’ Mission inside.

They decided to rationalise their services, so Mary and John negotiated with the Tauranga Harbour Board to repurchase their building.

They set up the Seafarers’ Trust, with the proceeds of 40 years’ trading, and it now assists the day-to-day operation of the United Seafarers’ Mission.

More poignantly, and perhaps more tellingly, it’s John Wilson’s legacy. He died unexpectedly just days after playing his part in establishing the trust to safeguard the money for seafarers.

However, the ships are still coming in for Mary, and she will never tire of her work. “I can never have enough,” she says. “New Zealand wouldn’t have trade if we didn’t have ships, and there would be no ships without seafarers. It’s important.”

The MetService is urging Kiwis to re-think their sun exposure with the risk of damaging ultra-violet radiation climbing rapidly at this time of year.

To keep Kiwis safe – including those enjoying the sun in the Bay of Plenty – MetService is once again showing UV forecasts on its website and app.

MetService meteorologist James Millward says UV radiation isn’t just a summertime concern.

“Many people incorrectly believe that UV levels are related to temperature, which is a myth.

“It has no relationship with temperature.

“At this time of year, UV radiation rates are increasing and Kiwi families and outdoor workers can, and do, get caught out.

“You cannot see or feel UV radiation, so people don’t notice the damage until after it has happened.”

MetService, the Health Promotion Agency and NIWA work closely together to produce the Sun Protection Alert, appearing below every urban forecast on metservice.com in the months between spring and autumn.

The Sun Protection Alert states the times of the day when protection is required, and this can often include cloudy days.

Tooth-conscious mokopuna have battled it out to be named the Western Bay of Plenty’s best for healthy mouths.

With seafood comes precautions

ut if shellfish have also been harvested for the Christmas Day table, then these tips from the Ministry for Primary Industries should come in handy. ooking after shellfish properly means they stay fresher for longer, reducing the risk of illness from bacteria. nly take shellfish from areas with clean water. efrigerate shellfish within four hours after gathering, and if transporting shellfish in a chilly bin, store them on ice but wrap the ice in a towel, as free ing will kill them.

Do not eat broken shellfish or those that have died during storage. repare shellfish carefully, and wash your hands to avoid cross contamination with other foods or utensils. eep shellfish in the shade during the gathering collecting process to keep them moist and cool. Cover live shellfish with a clean wet towel and store in the fridge – don’t use airtight containers or bags.

Bacteria and viruses, chemicals or biotoxins aren’t removed if shellfish are eaten raw or lightly steamed. hellfish are best cooked thoroughly for three-to-five minutes after the shells open, but cooking doesn’t remove bioto ins like paralytic shellfish poisoning.

Colour-coded bins popping up More recycling and rubbish bins will be installed around the country in time for summer, with the accepted standard colour codes.

The bins will be installed in Whakatane, as well as Clutha, Dunedin, Mackenzie District and New Plymouth.

This follows the successful implementation of the technology in Tauranga, Rotorua, Marlborough, Queenstown Lakes and Wellington this year as part of a campaign to encourage Kiwis to ‘put litter in its place’.

The campaign has been developed by The Packaging Forum, which promotes recycling under the government’s Love NZ brand, and The Auckland Litter Prevention Steering Group, which manages the Be a Tidy Kiwi brand.

It is also supported by many councils around the country, plus New Zealand Transport Agency and KiwiRail.

“In the past, bins have been designed to be part of the streetscape and blend in, when what we have needed are eye-catching bins that use the recycling and waste colours which have been agreed nationally,”

says Richard Leckinger, Program Manager for Be a Tidy Kiwi.

“As well as introducing standard colours, pilot regions have also chosen signage including Chinese, Korean, Hindi and Japanese as well as English and te reo. ur technology partner fi has further enhanced the smart units which provide an alert system to the collector so that they are emptied on demand not on a schedule. e’re very e cited by the potential for this technology.”

The $2.4 million project has received $1.72 million funding from the government’s Waste Minimisation Fund, with a national advertising and consumer awareness campaign.

From packing to wrapping While Santa and his eight reindeers are arriving in town, the elves are often wiping the sweat off their foreheads and looking towards the next year.

Elf Dave Thunderclap, 35, who has been an elf for almost 10 years, says people often don’t realise how much of a taxing job being an elf is.

The Tauranga-born elf says he works 12 hours a day in the workshop, while some other Christmas elves stock keep, look after the reindeers or do maintenance around the grounds.

“Each day I make around 700 toys, sometimes more, ranging from soccer balls to the latest toys on the market, like L.O.L

Dolls and Nerf Guns,” says Dave. “Some toys are more complicated than others, but generally they have the same mechanisms, so they’re not too bad.”

Before becoming an elf, Dave was a manager at his local supermarket on Cameron Rd. “It was a pretty mundane life – just working nine ‘til five, si days a week, he says.

“It wasn’t until I turned 24 that I thought to myself: ‘Is this really something that I want to be doing for the rest of my life?’”

Dave saw an advertisement in The Weekend Sun – a position for someone who has superior expertise in crafting and mechanics. He knew it was his ticket out.

“The ad said something like: ‘If you’re wanting something a bit more magical in your life and you have skills in designing and creating the latest toys on the market, join the team at the biggest toy manufacturers in New Zealand’.”

The biggest toy manufacturers in New Zealand actually turned out to be the biggest in the world – Santa’s workshop in the North Pole.

“Of course, they wouldn’t let loose all their secrets.

“Everything was very hush hush.

“They can’t let out that the big man wants more staff, but through a series of interviews I was able to sneak my way through.”

Dave always dreamed of becoming one of Santa’s elves while experiencing a true snowy Christmas.

He says during his downtime he would make little trinkets to sell at local markets on the weekend and he almost felt like a Santa himself.

“They were pretty basic trinkets – there’s nothing special about them – but I still remember handing the toys over to the kids and their faces lighting up with joy,” says Dave. “That’s the thing that sticks in my mind, even after all these years.”

Dave says he hasn’t met Santa in person yet, but hopes someday he will get picked out from the crowd.

“He’s a busy guy you know, and there’s a lot of us in the workshop, so I’m not too surprised I haven’t shaken hands with him yet.

Happy sustainable Christmas

Road safety improvements on the way The Bay of Plenty is in line for the Government’s $1.4 billion Safe Network Programme.

The three-year programme to make New Zealand’s highest risk roads safer will first be rolled out in Waikato, Auckland and Canterbury – and Bay of Plenty will follow after 2020.

The Safe Network Programme will make 870km of high volume, high-risk state highways safer by 2021 with improvements like median and side barriers, rumble strips, and shoulder widening.

The programme will target an estimated $600 million to $700m to state highway safety improvements and $700m-$800m to local road safety improvements.

Transport Minister Phil Twyford says the Safe Network Programme will build urgent safety improvements on our roads at scale and pace during the next three years to save lives.

“Drivers will inevitably make mistakes and the Government’s job is to stop those mistakes turning into tragedies.

“This year, far too many New Zealanders have lost their lives or been seriously injured in crashes that could have been prevented by road safety upgrades.”

Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter says the Government believes it’s unacceptable for anyone to be killed or seriously injured on NZ roads.

“Annual road deaths in NZ

increased from 253 just a few years ago in 2013, to 378 last year. The number of serious injuries increased from 2020 to 2836 per year during the same period.

“Local councils will be offered a higher level of central government funding to fi high-risk, local and regional roads. More than half of all fatal crashes happen on local roads and we recognise central government funding will help make these roads safer sooner.”

A programme of local road safety projects is already under development with the first pro ects expected to begin next year.

The NZ Transport Agency will also speed up the time it takes to deliver safety projects by fasttracking the approval process for standard, proven safety improvements.

Santa’s bringing brisket this year Hold the ham, thanks. Roast brined turkey with gravy and cranberry relish? No thank you! The gingercured salmon gravlax is a ‘no’ as well.

This a personal and all-encompassing rejection of traditional Christmas table fare, and the fattened porker hasn’t even been to the abattoir yet – that happy Christmas place where short curly tails that wallow in mud and snort transmogrify into glazed Christmas hams.

Decision made – I am not going to suffer another ham and turkey hangover again this Christmas. There will be ham on the bone on Christmas Day, followed by a procession of ham salads, ham sandwiches, barbecued ham and eggs for breakfast, ham and cheese brunch bake, antipasto grilled ham and cheese, ham and asparagus bundles, et-bloody-cetera.

In other words, days and weeks until poor old Hermione Hamhock’s $100 sugar-cured offside hind leg has been reduced to just bone and

binned. Until the ham has been used up.

But what could be Hermione’s good luck will be some cattle beast’s bad luck. Because on Christmas day I plan to hook into the cheapest cut of meat, the toughest cut of meat but perhaps the most avoursome cut of meat.

Brisket.

Okay – there’s a bit of research to be done before my brisket is transformed from the consistency of a four ply tyre. It’s taken from around the animal’s breastbone – basically the chest or pectoral muscle.

The characteristically thick, coarse-grained meat needs a lot of time and low-temperature cooking to break down and tenderise. It’s also moderately fatty, but this can work to your advantage because it moisturises and avours.

That’s where I will be venturing this hristmas ame, wood, smoke and avour, a relatively new to-New Zealand, Americanstyle low-and-slow barbecue that demands oodles of time and patience. t’s not your typical ick and switch iwi

barbecue. It will require research about the best barbecue, the right fuel, the right type of wood, the rub, the temperature and timing – and the investment.

No-one said it would be cheap or easy. But it will be a worthwhile way of destressing Christmas Day in a lazy, blokey kind of way – food, beer and blather.

It seems I won’t be alone. The Facebook group New Zealand Barbecue Pitmasters has a following of 9000.

There are also competitions like Meatstock, with more than 30 teams competing. Then there’s the Jack Daniels BBQ Championship.

People are getting serious about brisket, and I’m getting serious about brisket.

There’s momentum here. There’s even a real merican barbecue oint in uckland’s ash restaurant strip of Ponsonby Rd now.

But this do-it-yourselfer will be seeking out his own Christmas present – a long and low

American barbecue – and sourcing a butcher who knows a good rib from just another rib and something called a “full” brisket.

Let the slavering start.

And if it’s not too late, the glazed Christmas ham would still look better holding up one Jim Bunny corner of the pig.

The festival buses will run regularly from four convenient locations in Tauranga CBD, Mount Maunganui, Papamoa and Windermere. Free parking will also be available at Mount Maunganui, Papamoa and Windermere.

Ticket holders can log into their Ticket Fairy account before the festival and purchase a bus ticket for $10. Road closures will also be in place around Trustpower Baypark Stadium.

What goes into a Christmas pudding?

I loved the rigmarole. It would start in October, when Mary Winifred – her Christian names – or Nana, bless her, started squirreling fruit and nuts for her Christmas pudding. A bag of raisins here, a bag of candied orange and lemon peel there, sultanas and glacé cherries.

And the nuts - toasted hazelnuts, pecans and almonds.

Then, after several tram trips

from the Andy Bay terminus to the Four Square store, she had all the components for another memorable Christmas scoff.

And you knew the fat man in the red suit was definitely en route when ary Winifred pulled all the ingredients from her pantry. They were lined up, weighed and weighed again. Then there were eggs, butter, our, mi ed spice, golden syrup, suet – a recipe done from memory and by instinct.

Of course, there was the brandy decanter. It sat in the pantry from one hristmas to the ne t. nd ana

would take a sly sip straight from the decanter before adding a slug, or two, to the fruit.

And Cointreau – don’t forget the Cointreau.

“Of course you don’t need the brandy or Cointreau, but then you don’t need any of the best things in life,” she’d say, before taking another sip. he would fuss and fidget and, eventually, all the fruit would end up in a muslin cloth, suspended by a string from a wooden spoon straddling a basin.

We never understood why, but it all added to the mystique. s kids, we loved the une plained.

Some days later, all of the ingredients would end up in ana’s ceramic mi ing bowl. t was huge, and could have doubled as a full immersion baptism font. To continue the ritual, we all lined up and had a turn at working Mary Winifred’s wooden spoon through the mi .

Something about good luck, she said.

There was another nod to good fortune when we kids had to scrub 18 thruppeny bits, or pre-decimal currency three pence coins, for the pud. They had to be scrubbed because Nana said they could have been in a greengrocer’s ear.

Why would the greengrocer put money in his ear?

The coins were then blended into the batter.

So when batter became pudding, when the holly sprig sat atop the blanket of custard (did you know the holly represents Christ’s crown of thorns?), four boys went open cast mining for coins.

Because threepence had good buying power in those days. One year I recovered ten coins – half a crown’s worth, two shillings and si pence or cents worth.

That would buy the biggest block of Cadburys, a week’s bus concession ticket, three pieces of fish and more chips than a casino, or a pack of atinee fags.

Before threepences, a dried pea or bean was baked in the

cake, and whoever got it was king or queen for the night. It dates back to dward in the earlys. eas and beans didn’t become thruppences until after World War I. Originally, Christmas pudding was called frumenty – a 14th Century pottage and a thick-boiled grain dish made interesting with beef and mutton, raisins, currants, prunes, wines and spices. y , frumenty was slowly changing into a plum pudding, having been thickened with eggs, breadcrumbs, dried fruit and given more avour with the addition of beer and spirits. It became the customary hristmas dessert around .

Christmas pudding comes with lashings of custard and equal amounts of superstition. One superstition is that puddings should be made with 13 ingredients to represent Jesus and His Disciples. And every member of the family should stir the pudding with a wooden spoon in honour of the Wise Men. So there you go – there’s the answer. Mary Winifred knew what to do, she just didn’t know why she did it..

Fountain’s tertiary study off to a flying start Tauranga’s new University of Waikato campus opens next year but is already helping to retain the city’s top talent.

Bae Fountain, 17, the youngest goalkeeper to make the New Zealand men’s water polo side, will study for a Bachelor of Science majoring in Environmental Science and Aquaculture at the downtown campus from early-2019.

And his university career is already off to a ying start. ae was awarded

a University of Waikato Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship at the recent Mount Maunganui College graduation ceremony. The scholarship is worth up to $10,000 a year and offers personalised academic support, and access to leading sports coaches.

Bae’s thrilled to stay in his hometown while pursuing his tertiary and sporting goals – and says he’s “super grateful” for the financial support the scholarship will provide.

“It was quite an honour to receive the certificate in front of all my peers. t will help me to be more financially

stable while competing and getting an education.

“There really isn’t funding available for my discipline and the cost of competing is significant. ae is proud to be part of the first year’s intake at the new Tauranga campus.

“That’s super cool. I would be more than happy to promote that and be a big part of that scene.

“I’m really happy to not have to move away from home. A lot of my sporting friends do move away because they sort of have to.

“My home is where my family is and I don’t want to move away just yet. So to be able to stay here and do my sport and get educated is pretty perfect.”

Bae has an impressive sporting CV that includes national volleyball selection.

First selected to represent NZ at water polo aged just 15, Bae played for the youth men’s water polo team and represented NZ Schools at volleyball.

Last year, aged 16, he became the youngest goalkeeper selected for the NZ open men’s water polo team and was a member of the NZ junior men’s volleyball team.

At 1.95m Bae is an imposing physical presence in goal. But he says being a young goalkeeper at senior international level has been challenging.

“I’ve had to increase my intelligence to play against them and use my physical attributes to work against theirs. I have to communicate with my players on defence; helping them out, giving them the position of the ball, because half of the players will be underwater. don’t swim as much as the field players do but have to stay out of the water much higher than they do, so I rely on my legs more than them.”

In 2019 he wants to represent the NZ men’s team again and also compete at the World University Games in Italy in July.

Lochlainn looking ahead You don’t get a lot of time for resting on your laurels when you’re a driven man, like Tauranga’s Lochlainn O’Connor.

He’s fresh from scoring three gold medals and a silver in individual events in the junior division of November’s Lifesaving World Championships in Adelaide, as well as a host of other medals in team events – not to mention propelling his Junior Black Fins side to the world championship team title. nd his reward whole five days off.

“Swimmers don’t really get breaks,” says Lochlainn, who has somehow managed to complete Year 13 at Aquinas College in amongst his punishing training schedules, as well as competing in Adelaide and at August’s Junior an acific swimming champs in i i.

“One or two weeks a year is sort of it,” says Lochlainn. had five days off after got back from the competition, and ’ve been back in the pool ever since.

“That’s how I’m going at the moment.”

It was an extraordinary series of achievements for Lochlainn at the lifesaving worlds, picking up a total of seven medals – way beyond his wildest expectations, and a great way to announce himself as a top prospect in the sport. oing into it, was looking at top five maybe a couple of medals here and there – and that would have been exceptional for me.”

His efforts were crucial in taking the Junior Black Fins to the world title, but he’s quick to de ect the credit.

“It was an awesome team effort from not just the athletes, but all of the management and the coaching staff. We were lucky with two great coaches – John ‘Spindles’ Bryant and Matt Cairns – and our management staff.

“They helped make the team what it was, and we got an awesome result because of it. t was huge for us the first time that the title has ever come away from ustralia and the first time that we’ve ever won the junior title, so that’s awesome.” And especially satisfying, he says, because of some of the tactics the Aussies adopted, notably in the tough manikin carry events he excelled in.

“It was really good to get that one up on them. The mind games started coming in – I can remember a couple of Tauranga’s Lochlainn O’Connor Aussies telling me that my hands were feeling slippery and with his seven medals from Adelaide’s I was going to drop my manikin, all of that sort of stuff.”

Christmas is approaching and with it there can be times of joy and times of tension as families get together. My little thought for this week might help to shift some of those tensions and create a more relaxed and harmonious atmosphere. When I find am edgy or uncomfortable with another person it helps me examine what, in me, is reacting negatively to that person. Create your own crackers this festive season Christmas crackers are always a bit of fun around the dinner table on the big day, but you’re often left feeling sorely disappointed with the contents.

There’s the bad jokes, crappy bits of plastic junk and the inevitable paper hat that no one wants to wear.

And they’re expensive.

Home-made Christmas crackers are far more satisfying, and it gives the kids something to do in the days leading up to December 25.

All you need are some cardboard tubes – empty toilet paper rolls are a good option – cracker snaps purchased from a craft store – wrapping paper, ribbon or string and double-sided tape.

Cut the paper into lengths and wrap around the rolls with a 4cm overhang at each end to hide the cracker snaps. Secure with double-sided tape and secure one end with ribbon or string.

Another option is to use three rolls per cracker, securing the ends of the middle roll only if you want them to look more uniform.

Place a cracker snap through each cracker and fill with your own hristmas okes, lollies or chocolates, confetti and other small trinkets before securing the other end.

Re: ‘Lots of love for our cycleways’ The eekend un, ovember . was abbergasted to read in this newspaper of M Murray Benges’ statement that she and fellow WBOPDC councillors were eagerly awaiting the swift completion of the cycleway/walkway for the tourist industry. That statement clearly indicates that tourists are rated higher than residents.

The accidents that have occurred locally are partly due to the inadequacy of State Highway 2 and the poor decision-making of the authorities.

They must share some of the blame.

In this article Plunket chief nurse Jane O’Malley says she hopes Police would take a lighthearted approach, as people from lower-income households, who are more likely to smoke may not be able to afford a fine. ello ow much is a packet of cigarettes these days If they are from a lower-income household how can they even afford to buy cigarettes in the first place Surely that should be the last thing they should be buying if they are on a low income and using the money for food instead As for the beggars, one proudly states he travels in to Greerton every day, and can earn anything between $100-$150 a day just by begging. Are they declaring this income to D think not.

Is this supplementary to their unemployment benefits think so.

There is a local distribution company desperate to employ people to deliver yers all over auranga but cannot seem to get enough people to do this.

Why aren’t they making these sorts of people do this simple work in their own areas and getting some legal pay for it ot having transport is not an excuse there as they can all walk, I presume.

A privilege to be there The hospitality shown to all who attended the Anglican church apology ceremony was truly remarkable.

Although biscuits and sausage rolls would have met expectations, it more akin to a wedding banquet, with beautifully set tables and a fabulous meal for 300-400 people, despite not knowing in advance how many would turn up.

The outstanding hospitality re ected the significance of the event.

The apology – over land the early missionaries ceded to the Government

but should have offered back to local Maori – was an important event for the city. Well done to everyone who made it happen: the Otamataha Trust, the Anglican church, the Maori wardens, and especially Te Kohinga, the little local group doing big things for justice and reconciliation. As rain and high winds battered the giant marquees, two peoples came together: one to say sorry for past wrongs, the other to extend forgiveness, and for both to forge a way forward. A sticky mess

Resealing on State ighway between Kauri Point and Woodland roads last Sunday, December 11, caused a big headache for a lot of travellers. Time delays, cracked windscreens, stone chips, stones lodged in brake pads and stuck in wheel arches are just some of the many complaints that have been posted on Katikati Facebook pages. I understand heat helps to seal the stones to the road better, and wet weather causes pot holes to emerge, but on such a super hot day was it necessary r are these companies frantically trying to spend their budget before they lose it nd why stop/start just before all the obvious pot holes that are already there aybe the contractors should use their own hefty rollers to compress the new seal instead of using us to do their job! owever, on a positive note, understand is being very helpful to anyone who calls and lets them know what damage has been done to their vehicle.

Be patient, be safe, remember it’s better to be late than not get there at all. I hope everyone has a happy holiday season.

Enjoy a festive drink without the booze Summer has arrived, and as the festive season draws nearer, social gatherings are the order of the day.

While having a great time is the goal, being safe and responsible is paramount. Whether you are hosting a party or attending one, planning how you or your guests get home should be

at the forefront of your thinking.

Thankfully, there are now some very tasty zero alcohol or low alcohol craft beverage alternatives that still provide that feel good factor while keeping you or your guests safe at the same time.

Kombucha is made from fermented green tea, and has the added bonus of being really good for you. vailable in different avours and varying levels of sweetness, the overall avour profile is similar to a dryish cider without the alcohol.

I recommend Good Buzz Kombucha as it is locally made, not watered down and has no added sugar.

Rotorua’s Croucher Low Rider is a multi awardwinning beer and, at just 2.5 per cent abv, packs a lot of avour - as does ount-based Rocky Knob’s Undies Pale Ale. It’s big on hops and only 2.5 per cent abv, making it the perfect beer to have a couple after work and still

get home safely.

If you are a real hop head like me, you will love Garage Project’s Fugazi. Packed full of Nelson Sauvin and Simcoe hops, at 2.2 per cent it really tastes like a much bigger beer but won’t have you dancing on the table or singing The Gambler (or at least if you do you will remember it!).

As we wrap up the year, spare a thought for all of the lovely hospitality staff whose job it is to look after you. A bit of patience and courtesy goes a long way in helping them do their job.

Look after your friends. It is no fun being asked to leave an establishment because someone in the group has over indulged. ost importantly, get home safe. All bars will arrange transport for you. wish you all a very erry Christmas and happy holidays.

Keeping the kilos at bay this silly season Christmas – a time for excesses, for overindulgence. But while eating, drinking and being merry, we should also be wary.

The silly season is a major contributor to becoming overweight, with many people gaining an average .5kg by the end of December, according to some research.

That’s because many of us let go all dietary restraints and there are more opportunities to overeat and over-drink as part of the party celebration mood.

Christmas is hardly a time to be trying to shed kilograms.

But a more realistic, more achievable goal is to keep weight stable during the festive season and simply not put on any more kilograms.

Play host to Santa but don’t end up looking like him.

Limit the pig outs.

Keep wildly over-indulgent days

to a maximum of three – the day you finish up at work, hristmas Day and New Year’s Eve. One or two day’s overeating, when your stomach feels fit to burst, won’t be bad compared to a month of festive feeding.

Excess weight is gained slowly, not just from one overindulgence. Just eat sparingly the next day.

Be selective – survey the starters, breads, side dishes, hams, turkeys, pavlova and Christmas pudding and decide what is an absolute must-have, and what can be left out. Don’t use the occasion as an excuse to eat as much as you can.

Avoid too much alcohol – it’s packed with kilojoules and slackens the will to turn away from the party pies or fried onion rings. Dilute wine and spirits with ice and mineral water, order light beer instead of full-strength, or take a

juice or sparkling mineral water between regular alcoholic drinks.

Don’t forget the non-alcoholic options – sparkling mineral water, non-alcoholic punch, lime and soda, and iced tea.

And have something to eat before drinking to slow the absorption of alcohol into your system.

And keep moving.

Keep up exercise to counter the food. Visit the gym, which is usually half-empty at this time of year, take up swimming or go for a brisk walk after dinner in the cool of the evening. Walk the dog. Play cricket in the backyard.

And try to get enough sleep.

Don’t eat your way through two big meals a day unless you are an iron man in training – it’s a sure way to pile on the weight. If you have to attend two functions, eat lightly or skip a course.

The Old Testament prophet Micah prophesied more than 700 years Before Christ that God’s Messiah would come from a small town called Bethlehem.

Micah 5:2 says: “But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days”.

Micah prophesied that a new hope for Israel, and indeed for the whole world, would come by means of a new David. King David was born in Bethlehem.

The unlikely choice of David as king foreshadowed the unlikely choice of Bethlehem as the hometown of the greater David, the Messiah. Matthew 2:6, which quotes Micah 5:2, shows Jewish scholars of Jesus’ day read this as a prediction of the Messiah’s birthplace – and they were right!

Bethlehem means “house of bread”. here were lots of barley and wheat fields around Bethlehem.

Luke’s gospel records the fact that there were shepherds nearby Bethlehem, keeping watch over their ocks by night. n angel of od appeared and said to them: “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord”. Then a whole host of angels from heaven appeared, singing: “Glory to God in the highest…”

During His ministry Jesus taught: “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst (John 6:35)”.

Christmas is a clear picture of God’s grace.

Were it not for God sending Jesus as the bread of life, we would still be hungering and thirsting after God. However, through Christ you and can find peace with od, ust like Jesus taught in Matthew 5:6: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied .

The indescribable gift Christmas, a time of giving and getting.

A time of family reunions and long-distance phone calls. A time of street parades, decorations and lights. A time of Christmas cards, Christmas trees, Christmas cheer and Christmas food. But if most were to boil Christmas down to one word, I dare say it would be ‘presents’.

The giving and receiving of presents at Christmas time is a good thing – it underscores the love and appreciation we have for those closest to us.

Yet if that is all Christmas is to us, then our Christmas is far too shallow and will soon become completely devoid of meaning.

The Bible reminds us that there is one gift, given to everybody but recognised, received and appreciated only by a few. One gift of immeasurable value. One gift that is absolutely guaranteed never to prove inadequate, never to fail, never to need replacing. One gift that can and will change your life forever, for the better. What is this gift? I’ll let the Bible tell you in its own words.

It’s right that we celebrate His birth

This time of year, churches, businesses, families and individuals everywhere are celebrating something. It’s so universal that society and normal life almost grinds to a halt.

The event we’re celebrating is the birth of Christ. It’s amazing. One solitary life who has impacted the world like no other.

Born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He grew up in another village, where He worked in a carpenter’s shop until He was 30. For the next three years He was an itinerant preacher. He never wrote a book, never held an office, never had a family, owned a house, or went to university.

He never travelled more than 200 miles from the place where He was born.

The beginning of His earthly life begins the story of our rescue. His birth and life are celebrated the world over, because no one else has ever been born with such a clear redemptive purpose. He was born to live, die, and rise again. Why? So that you and me, and people the world over, might know and enjoy the love of God forever.

It’s right that we celebrate His birth. It’s right that His birth, life, death and resurrection be remembered and celebrated the world over, by people of every colour, culture and creed.

Christmas reminds me I am loved by God; that in believing, I might live forever with Him. That is worth celebrating!

A wise man once said: ‘The blues is like a plain glass’ – I tend to agree.

The idea is that the basic structure and building blocks of the blues are so simple, so transparent, that there is nothing to disguise the contents, so all you get is substance without being distracted by style.

It’s a fair call. Blues is one of the most essentially simple music styles. Its harmonics and structures are possibly the most “limited” of any genre. But to an extent that’s like saying a bass guitar is simpler to play than a guitar, since it has four strings as opposed to six.

It’s that glass thing. The number of strings or the musical chord progressions in the blues are the vessel. It's not about that.

It’s about what you put in the vessel, and when you’re looking at a plain glass there’s nowhere to hide – only one thing matters and that's what you put in the glass.

Now, after a hundred years or more of the blues existing, there are certain dilemmas facing blues bands.

The big one is, do you mess with the vessel, or do you simply fill that plain glass with the best contents you can?

Flaming Mudcats

Auckland band The Flaming Mudcats have just released a new album ‘Cut oose’. t’s their third and the first since the arrival of American bass player Johnny Yu. It makes no attempt to reinvent the wheel. It does not break the glass and start again with a new vessel.

It’s an absolutely straight-ahead blues album that could probably have been made 50 years ago.

And it’s absolutely brilliant.

The Mudcats are actually coming to town before the end of the year. On Saturday, December 29, they’re playing at The Barrel Room – and a wild and wonderful night it will surely be. And it’s free.

The band has been together now for 10 years and the most remarkable thing they’ve done is to take their blues back to its source, in America.

The Flaming Mudcats have now played twice at the Crossroads Blues Festival in Illinois, where they were the only international blues act invited to perform, alongside the likes of Lil Ed and The Blues Imperials and Tad Robinson.

These shows were supported by a series of gigs in Chicago and in Austin, Texas, including at two of Chicago’s oldest and most iconic clubs, Kingston Mines and B.L.U.E.S. in Chicago’s North Halsted.

This is the real deal. When I was in Chicago a few years back, I stayed just down the road and spent every night at those clubs. This is the pure beating heart of Chicago blues and The Mudcats were there.

Cut Loose

So back to ‘Cut Loose’, an album that comes after the loss of the band’s main songwriter. Bass player Sean McCarthy wrote nine of the 14 songs on 2014’s ‘Mistress’ album and good they were too. But singer and great harmonica player Craig Bracken, whose voice has gained extra authority in the interim, has stepped up and ‘Cut Loose’ contains 10 new Bracken songs, two of them co-writes with the new bass player.

And the band has extended their range. s well as patented e as shuf es there’s a taste of New Orleans on ‘Cut Loose’ and Chicago grooves on ‘Getaway’. Subtle use of horns and some great piano add musical variety while the rock solid rhythm section has an authenticity and classic style very different from more rock-oriented modern blues bands, possibly due to the legendary Ian Thompson on drums.

Meanwhile, Doug Bygraves guitar playing The Flaming Mudcats and is a thing of beauty, combining the incisive their new album ‘Cut Loose’. attack of a Jimmy Vaughan with the tricksy

style of Magic Sam and other Westside Chicago players. He knows how to make each solo a minicomposition with maximum impact, each tailored to the specific song.

All in all, it’s my favourite blues album of the year.

Highly recommended!

Swimmers to go bananas at Mount Maunganui A lovely ‘bunch’ of bananas will head to beaches around the country this summer thanks to one of New Zealand’s largest and oldest fresh produce companies.

T&G Global, formerly Turners and Growers, is supporting the aptlynamed Banana Boat New Zealand Ocean Swim Series again, which runs from now until April 2019.

Heading into its 12th summer of nationwide ocean swims, the Banana Boat New Zealand Ocean Swim Series attracts around 8000 swimmers and more than 20,000 supporters annually.

Swim events are scheduled for Mount Maunganui, Rotorua, the Bay of Islands, Omaha, Auckland Harbour, Wellington and Nelson, with every swimmer receiving a fresh banana after they cross the finish line thanks to T&G.

Banana Boat New Zealand Ocean Swim Series founder and event director Scott Rice says having T&G on board once more as a partner is a natural fit for a recreational activity that relies heavily on replenishing with hydration and nutrition after each event.

“Our swimmers are from all walks of life, ages and abilities,” says Scott. “But one thing is for certain – they are all very hungry after their swim, so it’s absolutely awesome to be able to give each person a banana.”

Pets, just like people, can get dehydrated, sunburnt and eat bad food during summer months. Although summer is an enjoyable time for pets, with longer days, warmer evenings and their owners being around more, extra care is needed.

“Kiwis have the second-highest rate of pet ownership in the world, with 64 per cent of households home to at least one animal companion,” says Southern Cross Pet Insurance general manager Anthony McPhail. “So we clearly have a soft spot for our furry friends.

“But we need to make sure we look after them during a season that can be surprisingly dangerous compared to others.”

Also, never leave your pet in a parked car. Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly to dangerous levels, causing organ damage and even death.

On a day when it’s 24 degrees Celsius outside, the temperature inside a car can rise to 34 degrees Celsius within 10 minutes and to 40 degrees Celsius in 40 minutes. Leaving the windows down makes little to no difference.

Skin cancer is also common in dogs and cats. Although their fur provides some protection from the sun, exposed skin is still vulnerable.

Apply pet-friendly sunscreen to their least hairy spots every three to four hours.

Don’t share your barbecue food.

Corn on the cob can lodge in a dog’s intestines, while Christmas treats like chocolate and fruit mince pies are toxic to pets.

We’re dreaming of a clean, green festive season The festive season is a wonderful time of celebrating, feasting and giving. But the season is also the most wasteful time of the year.

Tauranga’s transfer stations receive an extra 10 per cent of waste from households in December and January each year, that’s about one-and-a-half shipping containers full of extra waste every day.

In order to help reduce the amount of waste created during the Christmas period, Tauranga City Council manager of sustainability and waste, Rebecca Maiden, encourages everyone to consider waste before buying gifts and supplies.

“This means trying to reduce the amount of waste we produce in the first place, re-using items when we can, and recycling when we can’t. Disposal to landfill should be our last resort.

“As consumers, we have real power to reduce waste. If we make sustainable choices, and think about where things will eventually end up before making purchases, this ‘most wonderful time of the year’ won’t end up being the most wasteful time too.”

She recommends a number of easy ways to reduce waste.

One is rather than buying ‘things’, consider buying experiences or making treats that won’t end up in landfill.

Think movie vouchers, trampoline park sessions, or get creative and do some baking, says Rebecca.

“A charity gift is another great way to reduce unnecessary consumerism, and do some good at the same time.

“The giver will feel happy about helping someone in need, and the receiver will feel pretty happy too.

“There are a huge number of charitable organisations offering Christmas gifts/donation options to choose from, give it a google.”

Food is another big item that ends up wasted. Kiwi food waste doubles the week after Christmas, says Rebecca.

“The best way to reduce food waste is to plan ahead and try not to over-cater.

Find recipes to use up leftovers and other food waste tips on the Love Food Hate Waste website.

“If you still have food waste, compost what you can, as food waste in landfills creates toxic gases and liquids that are bad news for our environment.”

There’s also wrapping and decoration to factor in.

While it may look great, it may not be making leaving much of a pretty impact on the environment.

“Shiny wrapping foil and paper are not great options as they may contain glitter, plastics and other non-paper additives that can’t be recycled.

“Choose recyclable wrapping paper or consider wrapping in nice fabrics and ribbons that can be re-used,” says Rebecca.

“And instead of buying plastic tinsel, baubles and decorations, buy or make decorations from cardboard or other recyclable materials. Glittery decorations aren’t good for the environment so try to avoid them.”

Plus, real always trumps fake when it comes to the tree.

“Get a real tree and either plant it or recycle it via the green waste area at the transfer station afterwards. Or, if choosing an artificial tree, invest in a good quality one that will last many years.”

Rebecca also suggests re-gifting or selling unwanted gifts.

“Take them to your local charity store to help raise money for someone in need. “ Or sell them online or at a garage sale so they’re not wasted.”

Plus don’t forget your re-usable bags.

“Take them with you while Christmas shopping and say ‘no’ to plastic carrier bags and unnecessary store packaging.

“At the supermarket take your own re-usable bags for fruit and vegetables. Select products with minimal and/or recyclable packaging whenever you can.”
