New rules announced for birthday upgrades Birthdays are a great idea and we recommend you consider having one regularly, at least once a year.

This has been topical in our household recently, as a family member who shall remain anonymous is celebrating a major milestone.

We obviously can’t name the person in a newspaper that goes to the homes of 140,000 people and is surveyed as the best read publication in the entire Bay of Plenty, so we’ll keep it just between you and I, so my wife isn’t embarrassed.

That just wouldn’t be right in her 60th decade.

There have been some recent changes in the rules regarding Birthdays. Today we’d like to recap on a few of the alterations, just so you’re all up to speed with the new protocols.

Scoffing cake

Many of you will already be aware of these traditions, and this column may just be a refresher course for you. Others may have taken Birthdays beyond the scope of today’s seminar. Well done you!

Those people can apply to have their birthday behaviour officially ratified and added to the standard rules and regulations. If so, please contact us immediately so we can update the database of Totally Rad Ideas.

Rogers Rabbits is a self-admitted regulator of Birthday Procedures - a sort of Birthday Celebrant - just like a minister of the church, but with a party hat and without the imaginary friend.

As such, there’s a direct responsibility for the continued improvement of the Birthday movement. It might seem simple enough from the outside, but be assured, there’s a lot of work goes on behind the scenes.

It’s not all candles and ribbons at the coalface of Birthday machinations.

Someone has to keep the system rolling smoothly in the background while the rest of you scoff cake and do *The Floss*.

Automatic upgrades

One of the most important improvements to the Birthday Bash System is your right to upgrade (at no cost to you, only your

friends) to more than the standard 24-hours, once you attain the age of 40.

You can automatically be eligible for Birthday Week, if you so choose. Not just a single day, but a whole week of Birth Mirth.

The Birthdayee gains the right to select when the week starts and finishes, usually with the actual day of birth falling within said nominated week.

In some special instances, the Birthday Week option can be bestowed upon those turning 30 if they have reason for special dispensation, for instance, they are a proven, qualified and experienced Party Animal. Photographic evidence may be needed to support this.

Some people, and you know who I’m talking about, have put in so much dedication to the process in their early years that they can attain Party Animal status a decade sooner. They can be fast-tracked. They are living party legends, if still alive.

In these situations, the Birthdayees can obtain Birthday Week status from age 30 for the rest of their lives, or until their knees give out; whichever occurs first.

Birthday Week means the Birthdayee can party like its 1999, even though it is actually 2018 and they were born in 1988.

Quirk of rules

Under the Birthday Week provisions, those assisting with celebrations, the Birthdayors, must lavish love, treats, attention, outings and outrageous but meaningful gifts upon the Birthdayee for the entire nominated week.

Under some circumstances, the Birthday Week, if selected carefully, may contain two weekends, since due to a quirk of the rules, allows for nearby weekends to be co-opted.

So too, can public holidays, in the instance of Labour Weekend, when it would only be right to include the extra Monday public holiday to tack onto the week of celebration and potential debauchery.

In the event of two Birthdayees of close acquaintance discovering that, with the application of their Birthday Weeks

coinciding within a close timeframe, their Birthday Weeks can, under a little known but frequently exploited loophole, amalgamate their Birthday Weeks into a Birthday Fortnight, known as a Megabash.

Another convenient glitch in the matrix allows you to combine your week with the Queen, if your nominated birthday week falls within cooey of Elizabeth’s celebrated day; meaning you score a Birthday Fortnight simply due to your royal connections.

Recently in our family, a Megabash occurred when some members turned 30, 40 and 60 within the timeframe of three weeks.

They are still in recovery mode.

Other acquaintances report a series of amalgamated Birthdays occurred with three old ducks turning 65, 70, and 80, which was dubbed a Triple Granny Whammy.

Perpetual party

It is possible, therefore, for a group of say 50 close friends, to theoretically hold a Megabash for virtually a whole year, taking a couple of weeks off for a breather around Christmas. Let’s not be stupid about this.

Of course, the Christmas/New Year celebrations kick in, which effectively means a non-stop party for the rest of your lives, which may not be that long, if you do party 24/7 for 52 weeks a year; for consecutive years.

That’s enough hearty party for this week.

Athlete wins hearts

Kristie Purton was told to stop competing by swimming and cycling officials worried for her safety at this month’s Australian Transplant Games on the Gold Coast.

But giving up is not part of Kristie’s make-up.

The 35-year-old lung transplant recipient, stroke survivor, Cystic Fibrosis sufferer and mother of three from Tauranga says she just ignored them and got on with it.

And that meant gaining the admiration of everyone at the Transplant Games.

Her courage and never-say-die attitude paid off, as she won eight medals in her age group, including four golds for swimming, triathlon and a 30km bike ride.

She took on a daunting swimming schedule of four Freestyle, Backstroke and Relay events, plus the triathlon, 30km road cycle and 5km run.

Just getting to the Games was a triumph in itself.

She was twice hospitalised for two weeks, leaving just a month to get prepared for the international event. Every minute competing on the Gold Coast was something to cherish, but Kristie has one particular highlight that will stay with her forever.

“The finish of the triathlon was unbelievable for me,” she says. “It went through a retirement village and all the residents were out on the side of the road cheering me on and there was a mass haka for me at the finish.

“It was a brilliant feeling to be honoured like that.”

Greg Cummings, from Liz van Welie Aquatics, played a key part in Kristie getting to the Gold Coast to compete.

He helped raise $4000 for the trip and also coached her through the fine tuning before she left.

Kristie was a swim coach at Liz van Wellie before she had her life changing lung transplant.

Greg was staggered at how determined she was to make the tournament - particularly after being so sick prior to leaving.

“We are all so proud of her, and the way she refused to give in to being sick and the way she trained to the extent of turning blue with oxygen deprivation,” Greg says.

“No matter how sick she gets, she never complains or looks for an easy way out. She is an inspiration to everyone who knows here.”

Kristie and her younger sister Nikki ReynoldsWilson were both born with cystic fibrosis that clogs the lungs and makes breathing difficult. Life expectancy is about 18 without a lung transplant.

Despite their challenges, they wanted to give back to the Tauranga community and raise awareness for cystic fibrosis. The “Cystic Sisters”, as they became known nationally, completed two rounds of 65 days doing good deeds.

They paid parking fees, gave out supermarket vouchers and collected and delivered fruit to charity organisations such as the homeless shelter.

Truly, they are an inspiration to us all.

Greenlight for SH˜ upgrade

Government plans to improve the safety of the State Highway 2 corridor between Waihi and Tauranga are gaining widespread support.

The New Zealand Transport Agency has re-evaluated the transport plans for the corridor, to align with priorities set out in the Government Policy Statement on Land Transport, and has confirmed the need for a new state highway on the current alignment of the Tauranga Northern Link.

The new plans include a two lane route - one lane in each direction - between Te Puna and Tauranga alongside the existing road.

This will mean there are four lanes of capacity on the corridor.

Teens allegedly steal car

Three female teenagers have appeared in court after allegedly crashing a stolen car on Cameron Road in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Police confirmed the three teens were picked up by a man in Greerton at around 1.30am after they “appeared to be distressed”.

A police spokesperson says they were taken to Mount Maunganui, where they allegedly assaulted the driver of the car, who suffered minor injuries.

Two 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old were arrested.

Man plucked from cli°

An elderly man was rescued after falling 30 metres down a cliff in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

Emergency services were called to help the man who had become stuck in bush on the hillside above West End Road in Ohope on Sunday afternoon.

The Tauranga-based TECT Trustpower Rescue helicopter was called and was able to winch the man out from the bush.

He'd fallen around 30 metres through scrub.

MP’s popularity drops

Tauranga MP and leader of the opposition Simon Bridges has taken a hit in the latest political opinion poll.

Simon’s preferred Prime Minister rating was down three points to just seven per cent, while Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was up two points to her highest-ever rating of 42 per cent.

National dropped two points to 43 per cent, while Labour was gifted three points to have 45 per cent of the poll.

Right, left and back again

He can often be found watching the proceedings of the house on TV rather than doing his homework.

But it’s all in good spirit, because Ben Sokimi is paving his future with the power of knowledge.

The 17-year-old from Aquinas College has recently been selected to represent Simon Bridges as Youth MP for 2019.

And this isn’t the first time he has been in close quarters to an MP for the National Party.

At six-years-old, Ben remembers wandering around former Bay of Plenty MP Tony Ryall’s house.

“I made friends with Tony Ryall’s son,” says Ben, “and slowly I was exposed to the world that Tony operated in.“Eventually I got involved in

campaigning for the 2008 election and 2011 election, and it sort of just escalated from there.”

For this year’s Youth MP Elections, Ben was required to submit an 800-word which asked: ‘Do you think 120 MPs for New Zealand is too many?’

He was then interviewed by Simon’s team, where he made it onto the shortlist along with three others.

Ben says he sees the role as a great opportunity to work with the National Party leader and gain further experience in political matters.

“I’m really pleased and extremely honoured to be Simon’s Youth MP,” he says, “because I understand that there was a lot of applicants.

“To get that position - such a sought after position – is really humbling.”

Debating the debated

She never thought she’d want to get into politics, but with an enthusiasm to have her opinions heard and a natural talent for speaking, Makayla Wadsworth is the perfect pick.

The 17-year-old from Otumoetai College was interviewed by Angie Warren-Clark via telephone on October 12. A week later she was told she had the position as Angie’s Youth MP for 2019.

“As a kid, I thought ‘I’m never going to do that’ because you’d always hear bad things about politicians,” says Makayla.

“But it was once I heard that you could create positive change for young people that I decided to get involved.

“I’m really grateful for the opportunity, and this is something not a lot of people get to experience.”

She says all of the candidates also met at Tauranga City Council, where they were required to give a speech around their concerns facing the youth of New Zealand. Makayla was asked who her favourite MP was and why, as well as how she feels about abortion and whether or not it should be in the crimes act. “I’ve done debating for the Bay of Plenty, so I kind of knew a lot about the issue discussed,” she says.

Communities are a familiar thread that bring people together and support one another through tough times.

Noelene Tewhakaara has always been tightly connected to her whenua, and believes their voices aren’t always being heard.

The 17-year-old from Katikati was selected to represent Jan Tinetti as Youth MP for 2019, after submitting an application with information about her personal interests, what she has done for the community and where she sees herself in the future.

“I believe being part of Youth Parliament is a huge opportunity that will help me to get where I am going,”

Changing the status quo

He’s not afraid to door knock his way up the voting system, and by a very close call, Samuel Taylor has been elected, by public vote, as MP Todd Muller’s Bay of Plenty Youth MP for 2019.

The 16-year-old from Mount Maunganui College has always been eager to take up the position, having sent an application to the Youth MP Election when he was only 13-years-old. However, this year his application wasn’t rejected.

“I sent in an application when the last Youth MP Elections were running

“It wasn’t the politics that interested me, it was more the youth side. I’ve always wanted to help out youth and the people in my community.”

She says her interests are in social justice, youth work, law, and mental health and addictions, which stem around Maori development.

“At a young age I witnessed the rights and the treatment of Maori people being challenged in my community,” says Noelene.

“The majority of Maori that I went to school with have either been expelled or have dropped out, and I used to feel like I was going down the same path.”

“I enjoy door knocking,” says Sam. “I went out with Todd during the election last year and it was good to get back out there again and see a few familiar faces.”

A school library with no books.

Not one. As sad a picture as a classroom with no kids.

It just about broke Jan Tinetti’s heart.

The schoolteacher is still entrenched within the Labour MP, so the experience deeply affected the former Merivale principal. And now she is committed to putting it right.

Jan was with a parliamentary delegation visiting a school in the Solomon Islands. “There was a shed,” she says, “something a backyard do-ityourselfer might throw together.”

The local teacher then explained it was the library - but a library with no books.

It was empty, with not a thing in it.

“The teacher said it was their dream to have books,” says Jan, “but they don’t have any right now.

“They’re desperately trying to get their kids through school, and they’re trying to get their reading up but they don’t have any books or resources.”

There’s no art supplies either – Jan saw children’s art on the back of cardboard boxes.

The only time they have art supplies is when a teacher gives up a meagre wage and buys them for the kids.

“To see them learning, and wanting to learn, but without the resources to assist was heart breaking,” admits Jan. So the MP is planning a cross-party initiative – a book drive in league with National’s Anne Tolley. “She’s also passionate about helping children,” says Jan. “It’s something that’s easily done.

“Here in New Zealand we have lots of books and we don’t know what to do with them all.”

The schoolkids in the Solomons don’t mind ‘secondhand’ – they will take anything because, right now, anything is better than nothing. “I have a room full

of children’s books,” says Jan. “My kids are all grown up and won’t need them.”

Her book drive starts right at home.

“We’re talking fiction, non-fiction, books you would go to the library for, the richness of print.

“The world’s not so open to them.

“Their imaginations can’t go the same places because they don’t have the books to take them there. We are talking about those kids being able to immerse themselves in reading, in the stories.”

The MP says they’re teaching “beautifully” at the Solomon Islands school. “Auckland University has been over there teaching the teachers and they’re thrilled about that,” she says.

“But there’s no books and no art supplies.”

Jan says even the kids at Tauranga’s Merivale School, one of the lowest decile schools in the country, are actually quite privileged because they have access to all of those resources, but the kids in the Solomons don’t.

“I would rather we take them now than they get thrown out.”

Tradition fuses with contemporary Through the lens of a Maori understanding of the world, all things created are the result of three states: te kore, the nothing; te po, the night; and te ao Marama, the natural world.

But for the brainchildren of an upcoming show, which seeks to reimagine traditional Maori culture as it’s known, a number of forces have worked together to bring it to life.

For the first time since it was first performed two years ago, Pango is coming to local stages throughout New Zealand, with one show only planned for Baycourt in Tauranga on October 26.

“The work itself is what I like to call an art installation piece,” says choreographer Moss Patterson. “This is because it fuses lots of different genres together, including physical theatre, conceptual set design and live projection, electric guitar and taonga puoro, or traditional Maori instruments.”

Accompanying all of these aspects are six of New Zealand’s most elite dancers, says Moss.

“This is a live experience, so nothing is prerecorded. The show is very present and it’s made up of a series of moments which have been made collaboratively by myself, the dancers and the musicians.

“We are all invested in these moments together.”

He explains the performance as a group of men working together to create moments of beauty, masculinity and vulnerability.

“The dancers portray movement that is describing the primordial space of te kore which, according to

te ao Maori, is essentially the beginning of time.

The show also explores Atua Maori, the traditional legends of Maori Gods, and includes the narratives of Rangi and Papa along with their children, says Moss.

He says the show has been well-received by international audiences.

“As a nation we like to believe we are vastly different in terms of who we are, but there are so many similarities between our culture and indigenous cultures around the world.

“We are essentially all human, so while what we are presenting conceptualises a Maori understanding of the beginning of time, we are portraying this through traditional and modern movement. This means that even international audiences have been able to connect with us.

“And they have been very much appreciative of the way we fuse tradition with contemporary culture.” Moss says it’s these international shows which made New Zealand presenters pay attention. “We basically haven’t performed this show since those international shows in 2016, but we were invited to pitch it this year and New Zealand presenters said ‘we’ve got to have that’.

“I hope people will appreciate how much all of the performers put into their work, their honesty and courage.

“What you are seeing on stage is the dancer’s individual responses to the movement: they’re investing themselves into it, the same with the musicians and the design team.

Plea to fast-track developments

Te Puke is becoming an increasingly desirable place to live and work.

Approvals for new housing developments in Paengaroa, Pongakawa and Pukehina Beach need to be fast-tracked to meet worker demand in the kiwifruit industry and the planned Rangiuru Business Park.

That was the message to come out of a public meeting in Te Puke last week to discuss the SmartGrowth Future Development Strategy, which addresses growth across the Western Bay of Plenty district and Tauranga City. The proposed strategy is open for submissions until November 5.

Te Puke Economic Development Group managing director Mark Boyle says about 50 people attended the meeting from a broad cross section of the community, including developers, business people and community groups.

“One of the key messages was we want fast-tracking of approvals for housing in those areas,” says Mark.

“The developers are ready to go and they’ll pay the financial contributions for infrastructure.

“It’s all on the back of kiwifruit growth and the planned Rangiuru Business Park.

“We want to get stuff going - we have a very Mark serious proposal Boyle on the books to build 300 houses in Paengaroa, a serious proposal to build 139 houses in Pukehina and a third in Pongakawa.”

Mark says with developers ready to contribute to the infrastructure in the area, it’s not going to be an additional burden to ratepayers.

“Why wouldn’t you do it?” he asks. “It’s positive and it is much-needed growth. There are more and more people coming to live and work in the area and we’re talking about a mix of housing to suit the economy generally.” Mark says at the moment, there is simply not enough housing available in the district to cope with the influx.

Supporting rugby’s VIPs When Tauranga’s Dion Seeling broke his neck playing rugby as a teenager, the local rugby ‘family’ rallied around him.

So too did the New Zealand Rugby Foundation, which was set up in 1986 to support “rugby in need” but now exclusively supports players with catastrophic injuries, otherwise known as rugby’s VIPs (Very Injured Players).

A talented young flanker, Dion broke his neck playing a club game for Tauranga Sports in 1995, just days before trialling for the New Zealand under-19 team.

His accident left him in a wheelchair, but not out of rugby altogether.

He coached the Judea senior rugby team for seven years and is a keen supporter of New Zealand rugby, having travelled to Auckland, Wellington and Sydney this year to watch the All Blacks.

Now in his early 40s, Dion has lent a hand to the organisation that has given him so much help over the years by contributing a recipe to the NZ Rugby Foundation’s new fundraising cookbook, NZ Rugby Stars Cookbook: Cooking from the Heart.

His Broccoli and Bacon Salad, “tweaked” from a family recipe, is something he and wife Merle make regularly at home (and which this reporter has eaten and can say, hand on heart, is delicious).

In fact, all of the recipes in the book are family favourites contributed by current and ex-All Blacks, Black Ferns, sevens

players and injured players such as Dion.

He says the rugby foundation has given him both financial and emotional support over the years.

“They help cover the little things that ACC doesn’t pick up,” says Dion.

“I don’t call on [the financial support] so much now, but when you’re first injured you need a lot of help. It’s crazy how much your life is turned upside down.”

The foundation also supports its VIPs with tickets to representative games and an annual fundraising gala dinner at Eden Park. Out of the 155,000 registered rugby players in New Zealand, one or two players each year end up with spinal cord injuries such as Dion’s – far fewer than there used to be.

Greerton parking workshop cancelled A scheduled workshop session for Greerton retailers regarding the Tauranga Parking Strategy, previously reported to be happening on Tuesday, October 30, has been cancelled.

According to principal strategic advisor for Tauranga City Council, Mathew Stewart, he will be meeting with interested Greerton retailers individually to discuss parking strategies for the shopping area.

Halloween here to stay Halloween trivia is as rich and fascinating as the history of the festival itself.

Did you know, for example, that a quarter of all lollies sold annually in the United States are purchased for Halloween? That’s a whole heap of candy – some 40,000,000 kilograms of chocolate alone during Halloween week.

Apparently, Halloween is the second-highest grossing commercial holiday after Christmas, and the Halloween parade through New York includes 50,000 participants and two millions spectators.

Te Puke’s second Halloween trick or treat trail is dwarfed by those numbers, but is gaining traction.

“It’s still excitingly big – a little bit big,” says Rebecca Larsen of Epic Te Puke’s events and promotions group.

Fifteen hundred people took part in the town’s Halloween trail last year. “It was buzzing, and the costumes were amazing,” says Rebecca. “It’s simply a fun community event.” A measure of its success was that it caused traffic jams in the town, and a couple of Tauranga suburbs have also picked up on the idea.

Te Puke is certainly a town that has embraced Halloween – a festival dating back 2000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain – pronounced ‘sow-in’.

The day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter – a time of year often associated with death.

People would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off the ghosts.

When the Irish fled the potato famine for the United States, they took their Halloween traditions with them. Irish immigrants would pull naughty tricks on their neighbours, and the neighbours would bribe them with treats to stop them.

It evolved into today’s trick or treating.

Rebecca questions the Halloween naysayers.

“I don’t think some people understand it,” she says.

She lived in Toronto for eight years and has seen firsthand what it’s all about.

“It’s so much fun, with all the neighbours getting out and about and meeting each other in silly costumes. It’s all about having fun, and I think people

Finding solutions for Northern Link issues

The region’s growing population has seen pressure on our roads increase dramatically. There have been many deaths on the Northern Link corridor, which has resulted in locals expressing their concern over the lack of government action on trying to solve the problem.

With the lack of investment over the past 10 years, increasing heavy traffic and a spike in population growth, the corridor has reached a stage where there is no easy fix. The New Zealand Transport Agency, together with local and central government, are looking at addressing the issues in stages, with some much needed short-term as

well as long-term solutions.

Short term solutions include the implementation of median barriers, wide centrelines in designated areas of the highway and speed management along the whole stretch from Waihi to Tauranga to help manage the traffic flow.

Other improvements will include traffic lights at SH2/Beach Road and SH2/Marshall Road in Katikati, investigating options for the Omokoroa intersection improvements, developing a peak/event operation plan, enhancing public transport options and carpooling.

In the long term, the coalition

government supports a multi-modal transport system that will encourage the public to use enhanced, builtfor-purpose public transport systems where possible, rather than single occupancy transport.

This may not be the immediate solution the public is after.

However, care and time must be taken to implement the best possible transport solutions that will deliver the maximum impact on road safety.

Emily was diagnosed with breast cancer on July 14, 2016 – some four days before her son’s third birthday.

“There were five locations that it had spread to in my boob, even though I had only felt one lump and it had spread to my lymph nodes,” says Emily.

She underwent 16 rounds of chemo, a bilateral mastectomy with node clearance, breast reconstruction and five weeks’ worth of radiation.

After all her treatment, she struggled to come to terms with the changes to her body.

“Everyone says you should be grateful that the cancer has gone,” she says, “but you’re left with this misshapen body that you don’t recognise.

“It doesn’t just end. Everyone doesn’t just high five you on the last day of radiation, and that period after the treatment ends is actually often one of the hardest times for people to readjust to the risk of the cancer coming back and the side effects of all the mediation.”

To deal with these changes, Emily’s phycologist recommended writing a letter to herself, and this was where the idea of a self-power book called Dear Boobs was born.

“I wrote the Dear Boobs letter a week before my surgery,” she says “I wrote it by hand in a note book then put it away.

“It wasn’t until after my surgery that I realised it probably helped more than I thought it had at the time.”

While talking to a friend of hers, who also wrote a Dear Boobs letter, she realised how beneficial these letters could be for women. From there she launched a Facebook page encouraging people to write letters of their own.

“I thought nothing of it - just that maybe I’d get a couple of letters - but within 30 days I had 30 letters and they were from all over the world.”

She says at the time she was still recovering from the treatment, so she didn’t check them regularly.

When she did, she found the letters were flying in.

“I was a bit overwhelmed, but every person that

wrote a letter told me how helpful it had been for them, so I couldn’t not honour all those letters in the book.”

While her book was forming, Emily also found out she was a carrier of a BRCA2 genetic mutation, which means she had a significantly greater chance of developing breast and ovarian cancer at a younger age.

“It’s a big decision getting the test, because you’ve got to know what you’re going to do with that information and if it’s useful to you,” she says.

“I decided to find out because it would help me decide whether I’d get just the one breast done or both.”

She also recently chose to have an oophorectomy, which is the removal of her ovaries.

“For me, knowledge is power and

it gave me choices,” says Emily.

“I believe from there I was able to make all my own choices during treatment.

“However, it did have a knock-on impact, as my family needed to decide if they wanted to know.”

Her sister Amy chose to take the test and found she was also a carrier of the gene.

At the same time as Emily was going through Chemo, Amy decided to have a mastectomy.

“We weren’t really surprised, because my sister and I have always had similarities,” says Emily.

“And even though it wasn’t my fault, I felt guilty sometimes.”

Amy says she decided to have the procedure because she had seen what her sister had been through and didn’t want to put her family through the same trauma.

“I struggled with it in the

beginning, because if I had a child again I wouldn’t be able to breast feed them, so it took a while to work through those feelings,” says Amy. She says her sister helped her in many ways, from being there when she woke up to going bra shopping with her after surgery.

Emily also chose to write about her own experience presurgery, which is the 100th letter in the book.

“I knew it was something I wanted to do, and it has helped me understand my own thoughts better,” she says.

“I’m just really proud of my sister for what she’s been through and she’s been able to come out with something so positive for other women,” says Amy. “I’m not at all surprised by the impact she’s made.

I have conquered you and I am doing everything in my power to not let you back into my life again.

The fascination grew when he was given responsibility for looking after the fernery at the Greenmeadows seminary in Hawke’s Bay while training to be a Marist priest, and later when he returned to his hometown of Whanganui and learned about the medicinal uses of plants from local kaumatua.

After retiring from the priesthood, he devoted the next 25 years to ensuring matauranga Maori (traditional Maori knowledge) in conservation management, and in particular ensuring the preservation of indigenous trees used for rongoa Maori, or traditional Maori medicine.

This work has seen Rob named the 2018 winner of the esteemed Loder Cup, awarded since 1926 to acknowledge individuals and groups who make an outstanding contribution to conserving New Zealand’s native plants.

He describes the win as “quite wonderful”.

The first three of Tauranga’s 109 crosses have been put in place in a dawn ceremony on the waterfront as part of the city’s Armistice commemorations.

The crosses represent Raymond Baker, Frederick H. Dodson and Ronald T. Matheson - Tauranga men who fell in April 1915.

Baker and Dodson were killed during the Anzac Cove landings on 25 April, 1915.

The months that the First World War lasted have been carefully translated into a period of 28 days,

to represent the time when the soldiers from Tauranga died.

The community is invited to come together at dawn between now and November 8 to join the installation of the respective crosses by cadets from the Western Bay of Plenty Cadet Unit.

After all the crosses are installed, they will be re-located to Memorial Park - the location for the city’s official Armistice Centenary Service on November 11.

Rob says rongoa is less about healing and more about keeping well. He makes a decoction, or tea, from the karamu plant to help people with diabetes and uses the tataramoa, or ‘bush lawyer’ plant to make a decoction to help ease tension and aid sleep.

Rongoa is not a miracle cure, however, and people with conditions such as diabetes still need to follow the rules of good diet, plenty of fluids and regular exercise, he says. In regards to conservation management, Rob says we should always ask the question ‘does it hurt the earth or heal it’?

“If the answer is no, it doesn’t heal it, you don’t do it,” he says. “We are the guardians of the next generation’s well-being. We don’t own things; we hold them in trust for those who follow us.

“That doesn’t just include people; it includes animals, plants and microbes. We don’t have the right to deprive other living creatures of their future.”

It won’t be a meeting where you sit around in a circle and share your problems.

Tauranga’s new Insight Endometriosis volunteer, Katie Bear, is aiming to nurture a fun and informative space for women to feel heard.

Katie says she knows all too well what it’s like dealing with regular chronic pain like Endometriosis and not feeling like anyone understands.

Recently, she was told by her doctors that there might be a chance that she has Endometriosis, but she will have to go through a laparoscopy to identify and diagnose the source. She has also suffered from chronic back pain caused by a herniated disk for many years.

“I may have Endo,” says Katie. “My doctor has said that she thinks I do, but it hasn’t been confirmed.

“For me it’s really painful. I get a lot of pain before and after, but it will be going down my legs and everything.”

The 32-year-old says she’s usually quite good at dealing with pain, but the combination of her back issues and Endo symptoms can make some days a struggle. Because of this, she understand what many other women are going through.

“It’s not affecting my life too badly, even though I do have a chronic back condition,” says Katie. “I don’t think it’s a severe case though because I have a child, and with severe ones you can’t get pregnant.”

Katie recently graduated, with an honours degree in psychological science, and has done volunteering work in Australia. She plans to do further studies in clinical when her daughter gets a bit older.

She says she was looking at doing volunteering work and found Insight was advertising for a position in Tauranga.

“The meetings aren’t just for women who have been diagnosed with Endo, but people who think they may have it or support people,” she explains.

“I want to cover different topics each time, like mindfulness and nourishment, and in the next meeting I’ll ask what sort of support and information people want and outsource from there.”

A health nutrition consultant, Pauline Thomas will also be helping Katie during the meetings.

“So many women are undiagnosed with it and, like in my case, are brushed off when they go to the doctor,” says Katie. “I want people to get what they want out of the meetings and feel heard.”

The Tauranga Insight Endometriosis meetings will be held on the last Tuesday of every month.

This month’s meeting will be on Tuesday, October 30 at 7pm at the Sports BOP meeting room at 406 Devonport Road.

Break out the bromeliads

Coromandel fishers hit with $4000 fine Recreational fishers around the Coromandel Peninsula have been stung with a $4000 fine for various offences, including gathering crayfish carrying eggs over Labour Weekend.

MPI fishery officers uncovered the offending while out on patrol on land and at sea on both the west and east coast of the peninsula.

Spokesman Jason Howat says around 400 recreational fishers were subject to inspections, and some paid the price

for committing a range of offences.

“In general, compliance with fisheries regulations was high,” says Jason, “with fishers playing their part in protecting the fishery by sticking to the rules.

“However, 14 infringements were issued for offences ranging from undersized fish, excess and undersized paua, undersized scallops, undersized crayfish and taking crayfish that were carrying eggs.”

And the subtropical plants will get a lot of attention and love back when the Tauranga Bromeliad Club holds its annual display and sale next month.

It’s a good opportunity for enthusiasts to acquire plants from local growers, and for people who want to begin a collection of these special subtropical plants.

Experienced growers will share their expertise and offer advice, and there’ll be at least 10 sale tables at Matua Hall, on the corner of Levers and Hall Roads, on Saturday, November 10 between 8am and midday, with prices starting from as low as $3.

Bromeliads all originate from South America or Central America, and they have become very popular in local gardens. They complement subtropical plantings of palms, ferns and other plants with lush green foliage.

They grow as epiphytes in the wild, attaching

themselves to trees or driftwood.

Bromeliads do very well attached to punga stumps, and this can offer a unique vista of clumps of small plants at varying heights in a garden setting.

The foliage of vrieseas in particular can be dramatic and last throughout the year, so the grower does not need to wait for flowering for these plants to perform well. Others bromeliads have spectacular flower forms which emerge and develop over time.

Bromeliad plants are undemanding, tolerant plants for gardeners.

Their major need is good drainage, and there are plants suitable for sun, shade and in between.

They do not require fertilising and don’t need a lot of water. Furthermore, they reproduce by growing on young plants known as pups, so growers can accumulate a collection after starting with a few plants.

The club meets at the Yacht Club, Sulphur Point on the second Wednesday of each month from 12.30-2.30pm. Visitors are welcome.

Hole in one for golf tournament partnership Bluehaven Management, the principal developers of the Golden Sands area, have agreed to become the main sponsor of the Papamoa Rotary Golf Tournament for the next three years.

The Bluehaven Charity Golf Tournament is to be held at Mount Maunganui Golf Course on Sunday, April 14, 2019 and will be the seventh time the event has taken place.

Over the past six years, Papamoa Rotary, with PowerCo as the previous main sponsor, have donated more than $73,000 to organisations and

groups in Papamoa and Tauranga.

The Tauranga Energy Consumers Trust has just announced an $800,000 contribution to both the Mount Maunganui and Papamoa surf clubs for their respective building projects, just as the new patrol season starts.

Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service’s new landmark building is in the final stages of construction, and should be fully operational

by February.

With $300,000 coming in this latest announcement, it takes the total TECT contribution to $700,000, making the energy trust the largest single funder of the $3 million project.

The $500,000 for the Papamoa Surf Lifesaving Club virtually assures the club will be able to start its own replacement building in April, ready for the 2019/20 patrol season. TECT’s contribution will be $900,000 of the $5.1million facility, which will service an exploding local population in the eastern suburbs of Tauranga.

“TECT’s announcement couldn’t have come

at a better time for us, as we kick into a major community fundraising drive before Christmas,” Papamoa Rescue Base Trust chairman Jim Pearson says.

“TECT’s amazing community work and ongoing support means we’re right on track.”

The Papamoa club is now sitting at around 70 per cent of the total budget needed, with aims of getting to 90 per cent by Christmas.

Mount Maunganui started its build with around 65 per cent raised, and were conscious of the need to get it started and mostly complete before this coming summer. A major fundraising drive over winter has left the club with just $200,000 to find.

Papamoa’s original 1990 building was designed for 100 members, but the club now has over 800.

The 89-year-old Mount Maunganui club’s last building dated from 1978, and both structures suffered from the incredibly harsh ocean environment.

Sailors gear up for Tornado worlds These days, there’s a bit of an edge every time Tauranga’s Winston Ordish-Benner and crew Elly Warren go sailing on his Tornado multihull, Arriba.

That’s because they’re working towards something special. In January, for just the third time ever, the world championships in the class are here in our own back yard, at Auckland’s Takapuna Beach.

Winston and Elly are one of half-a-dozen Tauranga crews taking the rare chance to go for it, and they want to give it their best shot. It’s a level neither of them have competed at before, and they’re not entirely sure what to expect.

“We're just going to be doing the best we can, and seeing how high up we can get,” says Elly, a youth national champion in the Lazer Radial class.

“Ideally, we’d like to get in the top-half of the fleet, which would be pretty good with the sailors that are coming from overseas.

“We've never really come across them before.”

They don’t race the Tornado at the Olympic Games anymore - they’ve been replaced by the younger and sexier Nacra class - so there’s no chance of New Zealand ever repeating its golden moment in the spectacular multihulls at the 1984 Los Angeles games, courtesy of Rex Sellars and Chris Timms.

It’s still a highly popular international class though, with its well-attended annual world championships.

Most years they’re staged in one exotic-sounding European location or another, meaning only the

most well-healed Kiwi competitors can make it.

They only leave Europe once every four years, and when they come down-under, that generally means Australia. They first made it to our waters in 1980, then in 2008. So next year’s event means that finally, a chance rolls around again for a good number of Kiwi Tornado adherents to be able to say they’ve been to the worlds.

Winston, who runs Tauranga’s ProMarine Electrical, started out in Hobiecats, then moved up to the larger Tornado, because, quite simply, they’re bigger and faster. “Certainly the speed is exhilarating,” he says, “and it means when you’re going around a course the next mark is coming up quickly. You’ve got to think quicker and keep planning - like you do on a keeler, but on a keeler you get a lot more time to think about it.”

After finishing Tauranga Girls’ College last year, Elly moved on to study environmental science at Toi Ohomai. It’s a subject that fits very well with her ambitions as a sailor, which has been her thing since around the age of six.

Over that time she’s gained plenty of experience at national championship level.

“Ellie is a very accomplished Lazer Radial sailor,” says Winston.

“So basically, I nabbed her for the worlds.”

Could you have mites growing in your eyelashes?

As we get older, our immune system becomes less able to keep control of microorganisms such as bacteria.

A chronic overgrowth of these critters in the eyelid margin is called anterior blepharitis, which can be seen clinically as crusty debris that builds up at the base of your eyelashes.

These microscopic creatures release toxins which triggers inflammation, and this gives rise to symptoms such as irritated, red or itchy eyes and eyelids.

The condition can also increase the risk of styes and corneal ulcers.

Historically, diluted baby shampoo has been used to treat bacterial blepharitis, but recent studies have shown that this is not as effective as modern blepharitis treatments.

These include daily lid hygiene, with eyelid scrubs such as Sterilid.

Many people with advanced blepharitis can also benefit from an optometrist treatment that uses a rotating micro-sponge to remove stubborn debris and organisms along the eyelid margin.

One organism that can

also cause blepharitis is Demodex - small mites that live on our skin and hair follicles.

“Demodex mites are more common as we get older,” says Bay Eye Care optometrist Alex Petty.

“You are almost guaranteed to have some on your body at age 70.”

“Examination of the eyelashes under a special light microscope is often needed to visualise the mites.

“These little beasties can be resilient to conventional therapies. A more specific approach is required, often involving tea-tree oil treatments specially designed to kill mites.

“As this condition is chronic, blepharitis symptoms will return if treatments are stopped, so ongoing routine management at home is advised.”

Make sure to visit to your optometrist to make sure your eyelids are not harbouring unwanted squatters.

Focusing on the ‘can’, not the ‘cannot’ “Worry often gives a small thing a great shadow,” Swedish proverb.

In the past, the number of times I’ve worried and worked myself up over a situation are too many to count.

The more time I spent worrying over something, the bigger it seemed to grow as I added new scenarios, possibilities and ‘what ifs’ to it.

In more recent times I have taken a more proactive approach, and looked at what I can and can’t do. I have focused on the ‘cans’ and let go of the ‘cannots’.

This is not an easy exercise, but one that will become easier with practice.

Ruling out heart attacks A preliminary study of a new, quick bedside blood test performed in Emergency Departments could help reduce the time it takes to rule out heart attacks.

The study findings have been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The study is a collaborative effort between Canterbury District Health Board and the Christchurch Heart Institute, which is run out of the University of Otago.

Co-lead author, Associate Professor John Pickering of the University of Otago, says this development can greatly reduce the time and resource required to assess if somebody is at risk of having a possible heart attack.

An implementation study across 10 district health boards in New Zealand is planned for next year.

Selling cars is in the blood It’s a business that’s been in the family for years, and they plan to keep it that way.

Kiwis driving further and more than ever before More than 48 billion kilometres were driven on New Zealand roads over 2017 – a record high.

The record is a six per cent increase on 2016 and a 17 per cent increase over a decade. “As well as driving more, New Zealanders

are buying more cars,” says Kirstie Hewlett from the Ministry of Transport. “The light vehicle fleet grew by more than four per cent from 2016 to 2017. This compares to a two per cent growth in the population.” For every 1000 New

The science behind food While most students are neck-deep in essays, Wade Harrison is currently going through the process of making flavoured-milk.

The second-year Bachelor of Food Technology student says studying the subject means a lot of chemistry, engineering and processes, but when he tells people what he’s studying, he often gets the same reaction.

“Most of them say ‘oh, so you’re going

to be a chef’, but it’s more to do with mathematics, processes and how you make things,” says Wade.

“A lot of the time I say it’s more like chemical engineering, which allows people to associate it more with science.”

So, how does a kid from the Bay of Plenty who loved science, physics and mathematics at Otumoetai College, end up in Palmerston North?

“Mum and dad were a bit shocked because I hadn’t known what I wanted to do,” he says, “and suddenly I was off to Palmerston North.

“I went to see the school’s careers advisor. I told her what I was good at and she was really keen to show me food technology at Massey.

“It did stand out to me, so I thought ‘yeah, that’s me’.

“I knew I wanted to do engineering in some way. I’ve always liked problem solving and that’s really what engineering is.”

He says the first year has been good, with only a little step up from high school.

Second-year, however, has been a little more challenging.

“It’s certainly more report based and you really have to apply

yourself a lot more,” says Wade.

“But that comes with interesting projects and other things, so it’s good in a way as well.

“I quite like the physics and mathematics side of food technology; not so much the creative side, but that’s just me.”

As part of second year, students go through various stages of product development.

Wade’s project is looking at a Kiwi favourite - pies - more specifically, the stuff within pies.

“We are looking at everything from the ingredients to how it is sold in the supermarket,” he says.

“From an engineering perspective, working in a group is exactly what you do when you

get out of university into the workforce, so it’s quite good to start doing it now.” They have most recently been working on a flavoured milk project. It’s not like we are trying to make the next Lewis Road Creamery product,” says Wade. “We are learning about the processes involved.

“Homogenising the milk, making its shelf life stable, and all of the processes that go into making a product like that.”

This work will come in handy when Wade begins a summer internship over the road from Massey at Fonterra’s Research and Development facility.

Bringing the taste of Belgian beer to the Bay After enjoying such great weather, it feels as if summer is not too far away, and as a beer lover my thoughts turn to refreshing, flavourful brews served well chilled.

Sour beers are very much in vogue at the moment, so today we take a look at the world famous Lindemans Kriek from Belgium.

This traditional Lambic Ale, with the addition of sour cherries, is absolutely delicious and an excellent introduction to the world of sours.

Belgium is the home of traditional beer styles and Lindemans have been brewing since 1822, specialising in the Iambic style.

Their Kriek has won a huge amount of awards, including World Champion Beer in 2001, with the late Michael Jackson (iconic beer writer) declaring Lindemans Kriek as one of the five best beers of the world.

Lambic beers hail from the Zenne valley, southwest of Brussels, and have been made since the 12th Century, making them the oldest style of beer still available today.

It is famously fermented by opening the vats to the elements and allowing unique local microflora - in particular Brettanomyces Lambicus - to spontaneously ferment and create the sour flavour profile in the

finished product.

The beer is then aged in oak barrels for up to three years before having whole sour cherries added to macerate prior to bottling.

So, with great excitement, I open a bottle of this delicious cherry-infused nectar.

It pours leaving a thick head of foam. The liquid is an amazing deep red colour with a touch of cloudiness from the high percentage of wheat used.

The aroma is gorgeous, with cherries jumping through hints of marzipan and almond coming from the cherry stones.

Upon first taste, the sourness jumps at you like a scalded cat before delicious plump cherry flavours burst around your tongue like a sour cherry sherbet.

Finally, crushed almonds pull the flavour together in the swallow. It finishes very cleanly and at only 3.5 per cent, packs huge flavours.

Wow! What an extraordinary experience. I doubt there would be many who would not enjoy quaffing this in the sun as an alternative to cider or bubbles.

Matched with a fresh salad and soft goat’s cheese, this will make you very happy indeed.

Fishing and boat show promises feast It will encompass everything in, on and under the water.

It’s the first new Tauranga Fishing and Boat Show at Baypark Arena, running for three days from Friday, November 2.

“Boats and fishing are hugely important to Tauranga,” says show director Lawrence Daly. “If you don’t own a boat, you will most probably know someone who does. At the moment, I still prefer to fish from my kayak.”

Tauranga is rapidly becoming a marine center. To reflect, showcase and celebrate that status, the Tauranga Fishing and Boat Show will feature anything and everything to do with fishing and boating.

Companies which sell and service boats and yachts will be exhibiting, alongside marine electronics, boat builders and painters and trailer parts, amongst many others.

There will be new products, fishing tackle, entertainment, fishing simulators and talks on conservation, fish stocks and safety, with Coastguard and lifeguards in attendance.

“The paddle boarders will be there along with Kawasaki and Yamaha jet skis, which are huge at the moment,” says Lawrence.

Even the knife man from Christchurch is on

his way to the TFABS. “He specialises in filleting fish, runs training courses for the fishing industry and will be selling his own range of filleting knives. There is nothing he doesn’t know about filleting a fish,” says Lawrence.

Emerging businesses will also be there.

“The latest is the Bay of Plenty Boat Hire company. You can hire a boat along with all the tackle and head out for a day’s fishing.”

There’s something for everyone to suit every budget.

Brain trust behind Fishing and Boat Show Lawrence Daly is a fanatical fisherman.

He owns a boat and is an ideas man - an entrepreneur who, above all else, was looking for something to do. And so the 2018 Tauranga Fishing and Boat Show was born.

Lawrence is the one-man brains trust behind the show. “I was working at Baypark in the business development events team and watching all the shows coming through,” he says. “I thought I could run a fishing and boat show. Teens and employment – what you need to know With businesses already advertising for summer staff, it’s the perfect opportunity for teenagers to earn a bit of extra pocket money over the holidays, or even pick up a part-time job to fit in around their schooling.

But it’s important to note that slightly different laws apply to employees under the age of 18.

There is no minimum working age in New Zealand, but there are age restrictions on where and when young people can work.

Employment must not prevent or interfere with attending school, so those under the age of 16 cannot work during school hours, or after 10pm or before 6am on school days.

There are also restrictions on places of work.

For instance, an under-14-year-old can’t work as a babysitter, an under-15-year-old can’t work on a logging or construction site and an under-18-year-old can’t work in a licensed premises.

Literature students deepened their knowledge of JD Salinger’s classic novel The Catcher in the Rye, as they walked in the footsteps of main character Holden Caulfield.

“He’s a very flawed character,” says English teacher Sue Wood. “Students are always divided about whether they want to save him or tell him to get a grip!

“It provoked some excellent discussion.”

The feast of culture provided an insight into how the arts, including literature, visual arts and drama, sit in a global context.

“It pushed the students’ boundaries and knowledge and helped them develop confidence and resilience,”

said Art teacher Leana Buxton.

Closer to home in the Bay of Plenty, students in Years 3 and 4 are using technology as their window to the world.

Classes on opposite sides of the world connect through ‘Mystery Skype’, asking yes or no questions to guess each other’s location, and learn about geography, culture and other children’s lives in the process.

“We believe strongly in providing a holistic education,” said Principal Thea Kilian. “Our students are engaged, connected young people, and for us as their educators, it’s about a lot more than the pursuit of academic excellence.

Budget delivers cheaper doctor visits The cost of visiting a doctor will reduce for people with a Community Services Card under changes announced in the 2018 Budget.

This will give up to 540,000 people access to lowcost GP visits - making it around $20 to $30 cheaper.

Seniors who have either a combined SuperGold and Community Services Card, or a Community Services Card, should also see a reduction in the cost of visiting their GP by December 1 this year.

General practices can choose whether or not to

provide the new low-cost visits, so please check with your doctor later this year to see whether they have chosen to opt in.

People receiving the Accommodation Supplement or living in public housing will also get a Community Services Card, giving them access to cheaper doctors’ visits.

Treatment shown to reduce fractures in older women A treatment known to reduce fractures in women with osteoporosis is equally effective in reducing fractures in women over the age of 65 who have only mild bone loss, according to a new study from the University of Auckland.

Distinguished Professor Ian Reid, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, believes it is “a highly significant finding”, which he believes will have a substantial impact on how widely osteoporosis drugs are used for fracture prevention amongst older women worldwide.

Fractures are a major problem for older people, with half of all women having a fracture between menopause and the time they die.

The majority of women over the age of 65 are osteopenic, which means they have a lowered bone density, but not the profoundly low density which is defined as osteoporotic.

The study tracked 2000 women over 65 in a randomised trial to look at the effectiveness of a treatment called zoledronate in preventing fractures in women over 65 who are osteopenic.

“The treatment was shown to be just as effective in this context as it is when administered once a year to those with osteoporosis,” says Professor Reid.

Exercises to reduce the prominence of ‘bat wings’ Some people refer to excess fat in the upper arms as “bat wings”.

They are more common in older adults and people who are overweight. As the body ages, muscle tone diminishes, but many exercises can restore this tone.

Different people carry weight in different areas. Bat wings can result from excess fat and low muscle tone in the upper arms, and a person may notice the skin in this area starting to wobble or droop.

Targeted exercises can help to reduce weight in this area - though a person is likely to experience more satisfying results from a fullbody workout.

The main muscles in the upper arm are the triceps and biceps. The biceps are at the front of the arm, and the triceps are at the back.

The triceps are often the weaker of the two because the body does not use them as directly in lifting or carrying.

Strengthening the triceps can reduce the appearance of bat wings.

Exercises should always begin with a 10-20 minute warm-up to

prevent muscle strain, and could include marching in place and stretching the arms above the head.

To begin a simple exercise to help strengthen the arms, fill two water bottles. Holding the bottles, stand with feet hip-depth apart and raise the arms in front of the body with

the bottles at shoulder height.

Then lower. Extend the arms to the sides so that the body forms a t-shape, then lower.

To make a lasting difference, add other exercises and consider making broader changes to the exercise routine and diet.

“We now have a treatment that can be used across the older population in those we believe have a significant risk of fracture, independently of what their bone density happens to be.”

Professor Kath McPherson, chief executive of the Health Research Council of New Zealand, which provided funding for the research,

says its findings are of enormous significance for the health of women everywhere.

“It's not only New Zealand women who stand to gain from this current study,” says Professor McPherson, “and we should be enormously proud that New Zealand researchers are at the forefront of health research internationally.”

A bill, proposed by New Zealand First MP Mark Patterson, aims to raise the minimum residency requirements to get New Zealand superannuation from 10 years to 20 years after the age of 20.

Currently, a migrant of 10 years’ residency in New Zealand is entitled to full NZ super without any requirement to contribute to the economy.

Mark says the proposal contributes to the sustainability of NZ Super – it is expected to save $4.4 billion over 10 years – and gives a fair go to hard-working Kiwis. But Auckland Action Against Poverty spokesperson Kathleen Paraha says costs saved by restricting access to superannuation would be passed on to other government departments.

“Depriving elderly of income would just increase the cost of healthcare, and other forms of assistance from Work and Income in the longer run,” says Kathleen.

“In the past five years, hardship grants for over 65s have increased by 50 per cent, with many struggling to meet the basic costs of living.

“New Zealand First’s bill would harm some of our most vulnerable. It is irresponsible to want to cut superannuation without proposing other means of support for seniors.

“Everyone deserves to age with dignity in New Zealand. Providing enough income to our elderly ensures they can remain active participants in their communities.”

Looking at the needs of older Maori for the future With one in eight Maori expected to be over 65 by the year 2021, a new report around the needs of kaumatua has been released.

Te Pou Matakana – the North Island’s Whanau Ora commissioning agency – has released new research that highlights the increasing urgency to address Maori ageing.

Predictions show the number of people 85 and older will more than triple in the next 30 years.

“With the unprecedented growth in our kaumatua numbers, we are listening to our elders to understand what they need and what their concerns are to inform our approach to future services,” says Te Pou Matakana chair Merepeka Raukawa-Tait.

She wants to see multi-sectoral strategies and planning from the ground up, and believes that to be

adequately prepared, discussions should begin now.

“Everything is interlinked and interdependent,” she says. “Government departments still believe it’s a ‘one size fits all’ approach to ageing. Our elders should not be overlooked at this stage of their lives – their voices are rarely heard.”

The report shows that kaumatua vulnerabilities are diverse and include housing, transport, using technology, navigating and accessing services, as well as managing daily health needs, including mental health and loneliness.

Key findings of the report also show that grandparents raising grandchildren without support is a significant issue, and that talking about ageing and planning for it needs to be normalised within whanau.

It also provides insight into the types of services used by kaumatua within Whanau Ora

provisions and highlights the gaps within current services.

Physical activity reduces depression New research from Sport New Zealand shows that physically active Kiwis are more likely to have good mental health.

The research shows that people who do at least two-and-a-half hours of moderate to vigorousintensity physical activity a week are 51 per cent more likely to have healthy mental wellbeing.

A review of international literature submitted to the New Zealand Government Inquiry into Mental Health showed that physical activity reduces the chance of experiencing depression by 10 per cent in children (5-18

years), 22 per cent in adults (18-64 years) and 21 per cent in older adults (65-plus years).

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Grant Roberston, says there has previously been very little work done on physical activity from a mental health perspective.

Scammers hard at work Scammers were hard at work over the long Labour Weekend, and while New Zealanders were out enjoying the three day break, CERT NZ received a significant spike in reports of webcam blackmail scams.

“Scams where attackers claim to have access to people’s webcams tend to go through spikes, and that’s what we’re experiencing at present,” says CERT NZ manager operations Declan Ingram.

“Over Labour Weekend, CERT NZ received as many reports of webcam blackmail scams in three days as we received in the previous month – the largest spike we’ve seen since CERT NZ was launched in April 2017.”

In the reports received by CERT NZ, the blackmail email includes a password that the victim has used in the past and may still be using.

The email also claims that the person visited an adult website.

The scammer claims to have turned on the victim’s webcam while the victim was on the adult website and recorded what was happening.

People can report confidentially to CERT NZ to get help to recover, either at: www.cert.govt.nz or by calling: 0800 CERT NZ (0800 2378 69).

“Traditionally, we have looked at the physical benefits of being active,” says Grant, “but this is one of the first analyses to really explore different qualities of physical activity when considering mental wellbeing, and it’s shown that it deserves more attention.”

Domestic solar panels jumping up in size Solar panels installed in homes across New Zealand are getting bigger and generating more power, says the Electricity Authority.

Solar installation capacity is now averaging just over 1kW higher, says Authority

chief executive James Stevenson-Wallace.

“Around 300 New Zealand households are installing solar panels each month,” he says.

“New statistics show solar panels installed on residential properties in the past three months averaged 4.5kW in capacity, compared to the previous long-term average of 3.4kW.” In total, 19,497 New Zealand residential connections now have solar panels – some 3840 more than the same time last year. Their combined capacity is now 67.6MW, which is 14.7MW more than a year ago.

This is equivalent to the energy use of just under 12,000 New Zealand households in a year.

“It looks like the change could be because customers can get more value from installing a bigger solar

system with a battery to store and then use the power,” says James.

Nelson is the region with the highest proportion of residential solar

installations, at 487 or 2.2 per cent.

The region with the largest number is Auckland, with solar on 4204 residential properties.

Study reveals mental health concerns

The figures highlight the extreme end of a wider problem.

The 2017 attitudes survey carried out by WorkSafe NZ found that last year alone, 11 per cent, or more than one in ten workers, reported a stress-related or mental illness caused by work.

Those working in small

businesses with six to 19 workers were even more likely to have had a stress-related or mental health issue.

Health and safety legislation define health as being both physical and mental, meaning employers need to have systems in place for protecting both the physical and mental health of their workers. Psychosocial risks – such as peer pressure, bullying and stress – are a work risk in the same way physical risks are, and employers are encouraged to be equally focused on managing them.

It is not just a compliance issue, and there are economic benefits to good mental health

and wellbeing. Research from the United Kingdom found that a small company with 50 workers will typically face costs of around $100,000 a year because of mental health problems among its workers.

Research into mental health in New Zealand construction is scarce. As the largest membership organisation focused on health and safety in the sector, Site Safe in partnership with BRANZ, is playing its part to shed light on the issue by undertaking a study of almost 340 cases of construction suicides. Results from this research are expected next March.

Kiwis would rather insure car or house than themselves Kiwis are more focused on insuring their car, home and contents than covering themselves, according to a recent Trade Me survey.

The research found that almost half of New Zealanders don’t have life insurance cover.

Trade Me’s head of insurance, Jaime Monaghan, says 1000 people aged 18-65 took part in a survey last month, which sought to better understand Kiwi attitudes towards insurance.

“We found that 88 per cent of respondents have vehicle insurance, 74 per cent have home and contents, but just 51 per cent have life insurance,” says Jamie.

“When we look at health insurance it’s even lower, at just 41 per cent."

Jaime says it comes down to the good old ‘she’ll be right’ attitude.

“It seems this Kiwi mantra is still alive and well.

“We ran a similar survey in 2014

and very little has changed in the last four years.

“Twenty per cent of our survey respondents said life insurance isn’t important to them, and that compares to just four per cent for vehicle insurance and five per cent for home and contents.

“While it’s definitely important to have insurance for your large assets, we’d argue the greatest asset you have is you and your ability to earn money for you and your family.

“These aren’t conversations or things we want to think about, but we’re concerned that too many New Zealanders simply don’t want to think about the ‘what ifs’.

If something unexpected happened to your partner or loved one, would you have enough money to get by?”

Couples with children had greater rates of life insurance (66.5 per cent) but still far below vehicle (91 per cent) and home and contents (84 per cent).

Ultimately, renovating a home is less about the structure of a house and more about seeing a homeowner’s dreams come true.

“The ability to turn thoughts and dreams into something that will actually transform a homeowner’s life is really exciting,” says Cameron.

From ‘paw-ternity’ leave, time off to attend school concerts and care for elderly parents, New Zealand employers are pulling out all the stops to attract and retain staff.

According to the results of a recent survey by agency Frog Recruitment, employers are using new and creative ways to entice and hang on to staff in their businesses.

The Frog World of Work Survey questioned senior managers of nearly 61,000 employees from New Zealand organisations, from sectors including insurance, education, retail, manufacturing and not-for-profit.

After business growth, the biggest

priority for employers today is attracting and retaining staff, with 83 per cent of managers surveyed saying this is a challenge.

Despite their concerns, only a third had put initiatives in place to address the situation. It shows that while a workplace plan might sound good in theory, translating this to an efficient, talent-focussed and practical solution is missing for most organisations.

Among the initiatives reported were better pay, flexible hours, remote working situations and increased sick leave, with one company extending that leave entitlement to include looking after sick pets (paw-ternity) and elderly parents.

All too often, peace is the one thing missing as we approach Christmas. What can we do about this?

What do we mean by peace? Commonly, peace is believed to be about having a paced, quiet and safe life with little or no conflict. This kind of peace is dependent on our environment and dependent on factors outside of our control.

The birth of Jesus is what Christmas is all about, and one of his names is the Prince of Peace. What sort of peace did Jesus bring?

The Bible teaches that through Jesus we can have “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding” (Philippians 4:7).

This is a peace that is not dependent on the environment around us.

In short, God allows these things to happen to us so that we will come to know Him better. It’s through the tough times that we see more clearly our need for God. Often, we are too proud or just too busy to sense our real needs and to ask anyone for help.

But when tragedy strikes, it has a habit of knocking us off our self-assured perch.

Trials and tribulations help us to take stock and see reality for a change, and it is at these moments that we are more likely to call upon God for help.

The mother of a brain-injured child wrote: “We would have called this the greatest tragedy of our lives were it not for the fact that, because of her condition, we have come to know God better.”

Roading improvements fail Voters will decide Bridges’ fate Who is responsible for roading improvements in Tauranga? Despite all the promises of traffic congestion relief, endless road works and tens of millions of dollars later, the ‘improvements’ have actually made things worse. Welcome Bay, Hairini, and Maungatapu roundabout - fail. Barkes Corner roundabout – fail. Greerton roundabout – fail.

Would the decision-makers please find someone that knows what they are doing? How much have we paid the roading brains trust for these failures?

Simon Bridges has backed himself into a very dark corner. Had he handled the leak of his travel tour expenses more astutely from the outset he would not now find himself in the insidious position he is in.

Caucus may be still backing him, but a recent poll clearly shows that the people do not.

Ultimately, it is the voters in his electorate who will decide his fate at the next election – if his political career lasts the distance.

He has never appealed to the wider voters of New Zealand because of his bad diction, inability to speak clearly and directly to viewers on TV, and his uncompromising views on almost every suggestion made to him outside of the party.

The letters to and fro on the SH2 issue have really gone on long enough. The simple facts are that the previous government scheduled for the highway to be upgraded (at great expense), and the present government has parked the idea for now. Nothing we can say is going to change that, at least in the short term, so whinging about it is a total waste of time.

However, the present government has scheduled safety upgrades through to Katikati, much as I have previously suggested. They are quick and economic measures that can be completed with minimum delay and are now being actively considered by the Ministry of Transport. My position is wellknown that the major problem with SH2 is not the road but how people drive on it. Let the safety upgrades be done and the accident statistics carefully monitored to show their effectiveness.

We might be surprised. Please, can we now just park the ridiculous wrangling over history and move on to the present in a positive frame of mind?

Harassment doesn’t help It started out as a simple driving manoeuvre and escalated into a vile, running harassment down two or three blocks of Cameron Road. I emerged from 1st Avenue after giving way to a car. I noticed a cyclist between 75 and 100m back up the road. I thought I had ample time to make a safe turn onto Cameron Road.

When I stopped at the next traffic lights, there he was. Wall-to-wall lycra, red-faced and drooling vitriol.

The full loud, rude, aggrieved and self-entitled cyclist, gesturing, abusing and generally unpleasant.

I certainly didn’t think I had driven within cooee of him – an accident was never a likelihood.

So I drive on and at the next set of lights, he’s there again to have another crack. “See I can ride at 50 to 60km down Cameron Road and you’re driving a big heap of metal.” More nodding, more arm waving, more ‘bloody idiot’ impressions.

This guy didn’t do the cause of cyclists any good.

And for that matter, cycle down Cameron Road at 60km right on peak time at your own peril my friend.

It’s not hard to see and hear from women these days. If they are not everywhere, then it seems like it. Women today are more confident and able than they’ve ever been.

As they rise up in the corporate world, become builders, engineers and firefighters, it’s true, girls can do anything. Sadly, something has been neglected in the rush. Motherhood.

When I was a kid, there was no one higher in the food chain than mum. As a man, I rate good mums as the single biggest missing ingredient in our culture.

The day-cares are full to overflowing, such are the expectations of ourselves and each other. Working’s good. But so is being a great mum. Perhaps that’s why we’re all a bit grumpy these days?

Not enough love from the mums.

I still can’t work out why women want to be like men. There’s nothing that great about being a bloke. We’re just worker bees that fart a lot.

Why on earth would you want to come down to our level for?

All the women with any brains send their men out to make a living. They’re far too busy and important to have to go to work. Mums rock.

Bay rugby prognosis

Bay of Plenty Rugby pre-season trumpet-blowing over recent years has had all the hallmarks of spin-doctoring, but with unpalatable results in the postseason analysis. One bright star on the horizon is that the Bay under-19 team won the National Under-19 Champs – well done.

History shows that in 2003, Bay Rugby was hellbent on moving HQ from Rotorua’s excellent rugby stadium (creating some angst) to Baypark, which lasted only a few years. Then selfish souls morphed across to Tauranga Domain and started bleating about building a $50 million stadium on the constrained and geotechchallenged site, enlisting support from Councillors Mason and Clout.

All this hype for a pre-season Super15 and NPC home games with pitiful crowds. Tauranga would get four games and Rotorua/Whakatane three games.

The Domain’s main stand and temporary tiered seating accommodating good-sized crowds is fine.

Should Bay Rugby want more, then go back to Baypark Stadium, seating 20,000 with floodlights and 3000 carparks.

Purchased by Mayor Crosby and CEO Town (2007), this white elephant cost ratepayers tens of millions of dollars. Simply limit speedway to October-February, protect the grassed infield and get on with it. Stop bleating, sponging and gravy-training. Elitism and indulgences have no place in Tauranga city.

Great facilities for kids and families As a mother of young children I would like to say well done to Tauranga City Council and Bay Venues for some of the wonderful facilities for young people and their families in this city.

We attended the opening of the outdoor Memorial Pool on Saturday and the kids spent hours running backwards and forwards across the inflatable obstacle course and enjoying a free sausage on the barbecue. There’s a water fight event coming up next month so we’ll be back for sure.

There are also some beautiful parks and playgrounds, including the

one on The Strand with the Hairy Maclary statues, Memorial Park and the new one at Yatton Park on Fraser Street.

And then there’s our beautiful natural ‘playgrounds’ such as Johnson Reserve in Welcome Bay, Mauao, Papamoa Hills and the Daisy Hardwick walkway that council looks after.

Great walking tracks and generally kept really tidy.

And not just great for our kids. I’m sure the older members of our community, the dog walkers, the fitness freaks and the nature lovers among us love it too.

If I had to take a guess (always a good journalistic practice), I'd say we’re talking sometime in the late 1980s - 87 maybe through until the turn of the century at least.

Well that's what my mouldering memory tells me.

Now I better get onto some gigs this weekend because – damn! – there are a lot of them.

There are three shows on this Saturday night (October 27), so take your pick.

Music to remember the Great War

The Tauranga Civic Choir will provide the voices behind ‘100 years: A Kiwi Armistice’ at Holy Trinity Church on November 11.

An event to remember the sights, sounds and songs of the Great War will be held on Armistice Day in Tauranga, with all proceeds going to Waipuna Hospice.

‘100 years: A Kiwi Armistice’ will feature aspects of those difficult war years, including the involvement of women, the use of horses, those left behind and medical, as well as military elements.

The music ranges from Edwardian pomposity to music hall songs, to hymns, to soldiers’ ditties and marching songs, to gritty songs that reveal the awfulness of war, to songs of hope for a brighter future.

It will finish with Sir Harry Lauder’s ‘Keep Right On to the End of

the Road’, written after his son had been killed in action.

Musical director Nigel Williams leads the 70-strong Tauranga Civic Choir and Tauranga City Brass, with Philip Smith on organ, Leon Gray on piano, the Tauranga City Silver Band, Jeremy Thompson on trumpet and Elaine Wogan (soprano).

Tom Bradley and Elizabeth Price provide narration, with a montage of still shots covering pre-war New Zealand, soldiers leaving for war, wartime scenes and action, hospitals, recreation and volunteer work.

‘100 years: A Kiwi Armistice’ will be held at Holy Trinity Church, Devonport Road, Tauranga at 7.15pm on Sunday, November 11.

Tickets are $35 with all proceeds going to Waipuna Hospice.

From the potter’s hand The annual Bethlehem Pottery Club exhibition is an opportunity for members to showcase and sell their selected pieces. The range of ceramic work eligible for entry is broad, including sculpture and functional ceramics.

“Club kilns have been busy,” says Bethlehem Pottery Club’s Lynda Powell, “with members getting their work ready for selection day at the end of October.”

Local potter Maureen Ball is this year’s selector and judge, while this year’s guest potter is Petra Meyboden from the Coromandel.

Petra will have her wood-fired and salt-glazed work on display and available to purchase.

All pieces will be exhibited in the Exhibition Hall at Baycourt, and this is a great opportunity to purchase quality pottery made in the Bay of Plenty.

Make sure you get to Baycourt, from November 9-11, to have a look.

The exhibition is open from 10am-4pm on Friday, 10am-4pm and 6.30-7.30pm on Saturday, and 10am-3pm Sunday.

Public Health Nurse, Debbie Trenberth, has been handing out the resources as part of the B4 School Check, and says they help to generate healthy conversations with whanau and drive home the simple 5210 message.

“The resources remind families that we need to eat five vegetables and fruit a day, cut down kids’ screen time to less than two hours, be active for an hour or more each day and have zero sugary drinks, drinking water or milk instead,” says Debbie.
