Highway robbery Once upon a time, highway robbers were the swashbuckling, handsome rascal types who thrust their demands and hips in front of the stagecoach pointing a flintlock and boldly declared their evil intentions.

Sure, they were desperate, lawbreaking criminals who eventually hanged.

But they had a romantic appeal and some bad boy kudos with the ladies.

Even the ones they robbed.

Fast forward to so-called more civilised times. The bad asses are still here, but don’t have the style or the grace. Or the hips.

These days the Highway Robbers skulk around in Crown limos and insidiously extract hard-earned coin from the highway users by way of stealth and cunning.

There is a complicated system for claiming it back, but the cynical government knows that no private boatie can afford the rigmarole to do so. Any rebates claimed cost more to recover than the savings.

Perversions

The latest daylight robbery on our highways is by the very people who should be protecting our interests, not fleecing us blind. The latest taxes-upon-taxes on fuel is the dirtiest and most unjust piece of government clobbering since Auntie Helen took far too much interest in our bathroom habits, and tried to tell us how to shower.

Perverse.

Also perversely, the road tax robbing has coincided with a brutal cut in road spending in the Bay of Plenty. One might be able to justify it, had more road tax corresponded with huge dollops of cash lavished on our dangerous highway. But quite the opposite is true - the government has cynically canned the programmed spending and desperatelyneeded upgrade of Shite Highway 2 north of Tauranga, at the same time slapping the locals a rude backhander of tax increases.

It’s a double whammy insult to the hardworking taxpayers of this region.

If it wasn’t so serious (it will undoubtedly cost lives), it could make a scene from a Monty Python episode.

Pay more, get less

Meanwhile the government is bleating on about alternatives, such as electric cars.

Great notion, but in reality the electric car option is still far from viable for many.

Charging options are few and far between and the jury is still out on the supposed “green-ness”, with the mining of lithium, disposal of used batteries and dubious power generation sources, such as coal, still providing too many unanswered environmental questions.

The fact that only 500 electric cars are sold annually suggests the electric car market has a long way to go to be a sensibly-viable alternative.

As a business we’ve looked into it, and despite running an electric scooter for a few years, are not convinced the electric market has its act together yet.

I’m still waiting for someone other than the eccentric nutters to enthuse businesses to the point they decide ‘yeah, this is now worth it’.

Duplicity

And if you think its only boaties being unfairly hammered, remember every time you mow the lawn you’re being slugged for some road tax. I don’t see the government making any safety improvements in your backyard. Yet you’re paying more than half the cost of the lawnmower fuel in road tax.

And every time you start a chainsaw, ATV, generator or any other small petrol engine, you’re being slugged by a mean and greedy government ripping road tax off you, for no benefit in return.

Not only is this devastating for the average Kiwi family and their transport costs, but the impact on the economy will be huge.

The cost of everything is affected by rising fuel costs and increased fuel tax. Food, services, deliveries… virtually every corner

If the government was serious about the electric alternative, it would be offering major subsidies to businesses to convert, not throwing obstacles in the way.

Meanwhile, today’s Highway Robbers are getting away with it. The economy, the community and the nation are being looted before our very eyes. Hard working folk are being bled dry through unfair taxes, to fund other priorities - mostly a large amount of inefficiency.

You just can’t expect to get away with the duplicity of taxing for a purpose, then reducing the spend on that.

˜ 3 Vector Group Charitable Trust’s Steve and Tracey Fawcett may have to close the doors on the youth and community centre they set up in Te Puke if they can’t pay their rent this month.

Youth trust under threat A charitable trust working to support Te Puke youth may have to close its doors if it can’t make its rent payment this month.

The Vector Group Charitable Trust, led by Steve and Tracey Fawcett, has been operating in the town since early 2017, and leased the old Te Puke RSA building in November to set up a youth and community centre.

Among the trust’s success stories have been the town’s pop-up school ball shop, film, photography dance and art workshops for young people, the provision of space for other community groups to use and the bringing together of Te Puke social services in a collaborative group.

Steve says the trust has to come up with $13,000 by October 22 to pay the rent.

“If we don’t raise the funds then basically we’re going to shut up shop,” he says. “It’s been a pretty tough few weeks, but if we get over the line now it will be easier next year.”

Steve says while 10 of the trust’s 13 funding applications to various organisations have been approved, fundraising has been difficult because funders want to see results before parting with large sums of money.

“They’ve given us little bits here and there, but they want to see if we will survive long-term,” explains Steve.

“It’s like going to a hardware store and asking for nails - but they won’t give you nails because you need nails.”

Cathy Shaw, a teacher at Te Puke High School’s alternative education unit, says if the trust was to close its doors it would be a “great loss” to the community.

“Steve and Tracey have so much to offer the youth of Te Puke, and they have gone out and done the job when other people in town have talked about it and not done it,” she says.

“They’ve got a heart for people. They’ve tried to do everything they can to help the youth in our town and you won’t see any more loyalty than that. Without them, there is nothing for youth in this town.

“I think it’s about time people in the town got behind them and tried to find out how they can offer assistance and keep it running.”

Ben Wilson, community relationship advisor at Western Bay of Plenty District Council, says the work Steve and Tracey do in the Te Puke community has “terrific value”.

“They’ve batted well above their weight in the types of things they’ve been doing, basically with zero resources or income coming in,” says Ben. “I think they’ve done fantastically well and young people gravitate to them. They’ve got the right sort of approach to supporting young people.”

Ben says it’s important to remember that organisations such as Vector Group are working for the community.

“They’re not a business,” he says. “They’re doing what they’re doing for the benefit of the community.”

Tra˜ c lights set to return

NZTA expects to have the traffic lights at SH29A Barkes Corner back in operation within the next four weeks, following changes to the roundabout metering system.

The green light will be removed from the traffic light, and more sets of traffic lights and signage will be added on Pyes Pa Road and SH29A westbound. The traffic lights will be different to the previous set-up. When the traffic builds on one of the roads, the lights will activate by turning amber, then red. The red lights will stop vehicles for between 30 seconds and one minute.

Success for Tauranga boxers

Three Tauranga boxers have returned home with a national championship crown, a silver medal and an unopposed title.

The boxers, who are members of the Tauranga Boxing Club, took part in the Boxing New Zealand National Championships in Christchurch last week.

Michael Crosa warmed up for a title challenge in the Youth Light-Welterweight division, with a whitewash against Ali Ismatullah in Thursday afternoon’s semi-final. Ariane Adlington made a sterling start to her Women’s Welterweight title chase, while Hannah Walker was awarded an unopposed National title after emerging as the only boxer to make the weight in the Junior Female Lightweight division.

Alpaca mauled

An animal owner at Barkes Corner is mourning the loss of his last alpaca, after discovering the animal mauled to death by dogs.

It is the second time in the space of a month that animals belonging to Wayne Clayton have been the victim of a dog attack.

A security camera that he placed after the first attack captured the latest footage at 12.20am on Monday. “I’m just furious,” says Wayne.

“I haven’t got the words, but somebody needs to pay and somebody needs to take responsibility for this. The dogs knew what they were doing.

“They’ve been trained by somebody and that person needs to be held responsible.”

Beehive movement

The Department of Conservation is putting immediate restrictions on all beehive movements on Public Conservation Land, in a bid to contain the spread of the fungal disease myrtle rust.

The decision comes after research from Plant and Food indicates that bees may be a vector for the spread of myrtle rust, which can damage and kill some plants in the myrtle family.

They say bad luck runs in threes.

That was certainly the case for Papamoa’s Karen Kemp, with surgery for a hole in her heart followed by a hysterectomy in 2015 and a diagnosis of breast cancer the following year.

“I turned 50 and it all went to custard,” she laughs.

Three years later, she is on the road to recovery and enjoying a well-deserved holiday with her husband, Vince.

Before the pair left for sunnier climes they spoke to The Weekend Sun for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Karen’s breast cancer was diagnosed after a routine mammogram.

“That’s when the journey began,” she says, “and it is a journey with many stops and bumps along the way. Sometimes you have to take a deep breath when you’re on that journey.

“I found a lot of inner strength that I didn’t think I had.

“Once I was told [about the cancer] I thought ‘right, I’m gonna beat this’.”

She has undergone a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation, but the experience has not all been negative, says Karen, because she has made new friends along the way, including volunteers from the Cancer Society and the Breast Cancer Support Services Tauranga Trust.

“It was the hug,” she explains, “and just knowing you could chat and ask things you thought sounded silly. Clinicians are very clinical; they don’t really look at the whole person in terms of emotions. “Going [to breast cancer support] was a real help, and every now and then they would call or email just to touch base.”

Karen and Vince also appreciated the frozen meals delivered to their door for those times when they just didn’t feel up to cooking.

Vince joined the trust’s men’s support group, which gave him the opportunity to talk about how he was feeling and listen to others

going through a similar experience.

He says he felt the pressure of being “everything” all of a sudden breadwinner, cook, cleaner and nurse.

“Some men just can’t do it,” he says, “and I don’t know how some guys manage with a family.

“Our whole life stopped for three-and-a-half years.

“It’s difficult financially, and Karen will never be the same again.

“For a guy that’s hard. Guys need support too.”

Karen agrees that the carers are often forgotten.

“Sometimes we forget about our partners because it’s all focussed on you to get well,” she says.

“They are going through a tough time too.”

The support groups were invaluable for Karen and Vince, who battled through her illness without family support.

They also credit their dogs for helping them cope.

“Lucy helped get me through this,” says Karen. “I had her by my side constantly, even when the nurses came to do procedures.

“She just sat there and watched.”

Karen says having a sense of humour, and making the most of opportunities to have fun, has been important for the couple.

“When I lost my hair it was sad, but we got a bottle of champagne and Vinnie shaved my head and we took shave foam pictures.

“And when I was bald, breast cancer support had a day of henna tattooing and I got my whole head done.”

Despite the laughs along the way, Karen says she became quite depressed at the end of her treatment.

The Breast Cancer Foundation Pink Ribbon Street Appeal is on today and tomorrow, October 12-13. Volunteers will be accepting donations at collection points throughout Tauranga.

‘Shameless’ charity thieves GARDEN CENTRE CENTRE GARDEN

Thieves have targeted Alzheimers Tauranga’s fundraising plant stand for the third time in a year, stealing muchneeded donations.

Manager Julie Sargisson says they don’t know exactly how much was taken from the plant stand, but the thefts are becoming more deliberate each time.

The plant stand, which has been a feature outside the Alzheimers Tauranga office on 13th Avenue for more than 10 years, has had improvements made each time it has been broken into, but it hasn’t been enough to deter the thieves.

“Each time it has been broken into, we have made the lock and money tin stronger,” says Julie, “but they are really targeting our money.

“This time these shameless thieves have made

quite an effort to prise the tin and ended up cutting the padlock. It is sad that someone has gone to such an effort to steal from a charity.

“Our plant stand should be a real win-win for our community. All items are donated.

“We usually have seasonal fruit, a variety of plants, seedlings and worm fertiliser. Because the items are donated, all we ask is a donation in return.

“We rely on donations and fundraising to continue to provide our services to some of our community’s most vulnerable people.

“While it won’t have been a lot of money taken, the plant stand is out of action at the most lucrative time of year when people are getting seedlings for their gardens.”

With the help of volunteers who have come up with a better system to keep the money safe, the plant stand will be back in action as soon as possible.

It’s not really a subject you’d want to bring up at the dinner table, but Diane Cheyne believes it needs to be said.

Tauranga resident Diane is one of around 7500 New Zealanders, and approximately 500 people in the Bay of Plenty, living with an ostomy – a surgical opening that allows people to release waste from their bodies into a small pouch.

Although the recovery process is generally quite seamless, it comes with a lot of worry and embarrassment.

“People don’t like to think that they will poo in a bag for the rest of their life,” says Diane, the president of the WBOP Ostomy Society.

“In fact, some people would rather die than have a bag.

“Having a bag is life changing.

“It can make you feel isolated, and when you look down and see this rose bud sticking out of your tummy, it can be hard to wrap your head around it.

“But it’s not the end of your life.”

Diane was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2010. While undergoing chemo and radiation, the tumour, originally 15cm in size, was reduced and removed and a stoma was put in its place.

The stoma was in situ for nine months, then two years later, the surgery was reversed.

“They like to reverse them because

a lot of people don’t need a bag anymore or choose not to have one,” says Diane.

“But it’s not always an instant fix.

“Some people think when they have a reversal that their bowel will work normally again, but it takes about sixto-nine months of diarrhoea and constantly going to the toilet around 23 times a day before it can come right.”

For Diane this wasn’t the case.

In 2016 she found her bowel still wasn’t functioning correctly, and she asked for ostomy surgery again where a permanent pouch was fitted.

She says it was hard to get a stoma again, but it was something that needed be done.

“I think I coped with it better than others would because I have such a positive attitude,” says Diane.

“My philosophy is if you can get your head around it, your body will follow, and I went into the process with that kind of thinking.”

There’s nothing much that Diane can’t do now. She still dances and gardens and is involved in various activities in the community.

“You can’t do heavy lifting,” she admits, “that’s a bit of a no-no.

“But other than that there’s nothing much else you can’t do.”

Work on Bella Vista continues Tauranga City Council is continuing to work towards a resolution for those affected by the fall-out from the failed Bella Vista Homes development.

Settlement has been agreed for one of the 21 affected homes, and ongoing work continues to achieve settlement for the remainder.

The Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment has visited Tauranga as part of a technical investigation/review into the policies and procedures surrounding council’s regulatory role, with a view to understanding how and why the Bella

Vista subdivision failed.

This independent review will be conducted by senior MBIE officials and overseen by Paul Hobbs, acting manager (Building System Assurance) at MBIE. Council has also initiated an employment enquiry to understand the roles, responsibility and accountability of staff and management involved in the regulatory function of council.

This work, while employment related, will be independently overseen by recently retired Chief Employment Court Judge Graeme Colgan.

The enquiries are expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Trip to China Tauranga’s Shilo Kino and Jessica Evans have won a trip to China.

A combination of enthusiasm for learning about Chinese culture, creativity and a great attitude towards giving the Chinese language a go has won five young Kiwis an all-expenses paid trip. The winning entries for the New Zealand Chinese Language Week competition, sponsored

by China Southern Airlines, were submitted via video on Instagram, and outlined why the entrants deserved a trip to Southern China’s gateway city of Guangzhou.

“The trust was delighted to see nearly 50 entries to the competition from all over New Zealand,” says New Zealand Chinese Language Week Trust co-chair, Jo Coughlan. “Entries were judged on use of language, interest in Chinese culture and a thirst for knowledge, enthusiasm and sense of humour.”

“Entries were creative, interesting and enjoyable to watch,” says general manager of China Southern Airlines Auckland Office, Lily Wang.

“It was a very difficult decision to pick five winners out of nearly 50. Guangzhou is a wonderful city, and I know the winners will have a fantastic time.”

Shilo and Jessica’s trip, courtesy of China Southern Airlines and Guangzhou Tourism Bureau, will take place in December this year.It includes return flights from Auckland, accommodation for four nights and five days of sightseeing, including Chimelong Safari Park – home to the world’s only giant panda triplets – Nanyue Palace and a Pearl River night cruise.

Boaties urged to check conditions before heading out Western Bay of Plenty Police and Coastguard are urging boaties to be prepared after two boats capsized on the Kaituna Bar last week.

On October 5, a small boat with two people on board capsized on the bar.

As Maketu Coastguard officials were returning from that rescue, they were diverted to Pukehina where four people on a small boat were reportedly in distress.

The following morning, another

boat capsized on the Kaituna Bar with three people on board.

No one involved in any of the incidents was injured.

The Kaituna boat ramp is currently out of commission and boats are launching from the Bell Road boat ramp, where the bar is not visible. It is not until boaties get to the bar they realise conditions are not favourable.

Maketu Coastguard advises the bar crossing can be treacherous three hours either side of low tide.

Police and Coastguard are urging boaties to check the weather and tides before launching.

“Every person on board should be wearing a life jacket before crossing a bar,” says a spokesperson, “and best practice would be to contact the local Coastguard before and after you cross a bar.

“Ensure that if you are carrying a cell phone as one of your means of communication, it is in a snap-lock bag to keep it dry.”

Bus changes to benefit entire community A number of changes to bus routes throughout Tauranga will take effect from December 10.

The changes are the first of their kin since 2008, when Tauranga’s public transport network was last redesigned.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council transport policy manager, Garry Maloney, says not only has the region changed during this time, but so too has the needs of its community and its operating environment.

“The new blueprint looks to address a number of transport challenges that have emerged as a result of that growth,” says Garry, “including associated traffi congestion, increasing demand and expectation for public transport services.

“The need for supporting infrastructure development and an increasing level of investment is required to deliver public transport.”

Last week, The Weekend Sun heard from Deb Turner, who voiced her concerns about the changes, how they would affect her own travel and her concerns for the elderly.

However, Garry expects the changes will benefit not only the elderly population, bu the entire community.

“We expect at least a third of passengers will have shorter journey times as a result of routes being more direct,” he says.

“More frequent bus services will also enable people to travel closer to their desired travel times and there will be

additional ‘total journey time’ savings for bus users.”

He says BOPRC is still in its early stages of announcing the changes.

“New timetables available online only include major stop information, and there are numerous other stops between these time-stamped points,” explains Garry.

“Our goal is to provide users with more and more detailed information leading up to the launch, including the updated Journey Planner tool.

“All of the additional information on the

new routes will be launched in due course and should answer people’s individual questions.”

While the new blueprint may cater to most, he recognises it may not suit all passengers.

“We want to reiterate our commitment to the public and are always happy to speak with individuals,” says Garry.

“We urge those with questions or concerns to get in touch with the team.”

Failing to plan is planning to fail Councillors have been expressing the community’s frustration to NZTA (the government agency responsible for State Highways) regarding several projects recently.

There have been significant difficultie with the Welcome Bay underpass that should have been identified when the $45m project was designed five years ago - not three months after opening.

The nine-day trial which funnelled SH29a traffic onto Welcome Bay Road put travel times from Welcome Bay back to what they were before the underpass.

The dangerous cycle lane, obvious to the public from day one that cuts through the middle of oncoming traffic has resulted in the closure of a lane to cars. However, common sense has finally won, and the cycleway will be removed and rerouted.

There were accidents at the SH29/ Barkes Corner roundabout when the confusing traffic lights were placed too close to the roundabout. The lights

had a green phase, but drivers were still expected to give way, unlike the Maungatapu roundabout!

Councillors have been pleading with NZTA not to let the Bayfair to Baypark project on SH2/Maunganui Road become an aerial carpark as traffic backs up from Hewletts Road.

Adding an express bus lane from Papamoa down the left-hand side, into MacDonald Street, then Hewletts Road would be the best advert for public transport, but to no avail.

The Tauranga Northern Link was supposed to start this month under the previous government, but is on hold with the Labour/New Zealand First government. NZTA have some great staff, but they are only given budgets by governments to build a sow’s ear.

Todd talks current government tax Whilst out and about in our community last week, a gentleman mentioned to me on his doorstep that he believes the government has a tax problem.

While I agreed with him at the time, upon reflection my view has changed ever so slightly.

The reality is that the government doesn’t have a tax problem.

The government has a spending problem, and as a result of that spending problem you and your family are the ones with a tax problem.

This is a government that cancelled National’s $1000 tax cuts for

hardworking New Zealanders on the average wage so that it could spend more.

Between increases in fuel tax, GST on your fuel tax (yes, a tax on a tax) and rates rises, communities are paying tax at eye watering levels.

You are working harder, but getting no further ahead.

The government won’t change their spending priorities, so you need to change yours instead.

We also have a Tax Working Group toiling away behind the scenes looking at how they can surgically extract more of your hard-earned cash from your wallet.

Field of Remembrance White crosses will start appearing on Tauranga waterfront from next week as a Field of Remembrance is installed to mark the lives of the region’s soldiers who did not return from World War I.

A total of 109 crosses will be installed at dawn on various days from October 17 in the lead-up to Armistice Day on November 11.

They will be put in place by cadets from the Western Bay of Plenty Cadet Unit and later re-located to Memorial Park for the city’s official Armistice Day commemoration service.

This year marks 100 years since the armistice that ended World War I. On November 11, New Zealanders across the country will remember the service and sacrifices endured by those who fought, and those who stayed behind.

“The First World War had an impact on almost every family at that time,” says Tauranga Mayor Greg Brownless. “It is important that we remember this significant day in our history.

As well as the Field of Remembrance cross installation, there will be an exhibition exploring the experiences of local soldiers returning home.

Homecomings: From Tauranga to the Trenches will run from October 12-November 8 on Tauranga waterfront, and from November 10 at Memorial Park, from 9.30am-3.30pm each day.

The price of petrol

Creating Mauao guardians

There has been a lot of talk about the price of petrol recently. It’s clear to see that Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is right when she says that New Zealanders are being fleeced by the petrol companies, and it is outrageous that we are paying some of the highest petrol prices in the OECD. Just look at the facts when it comes to the price increase. In less than a year petrol prices jumped up 39 cents, and only seven cents of that is from the fuel excise, so 32 cents are importer’s margins and costs. It is unfortunate to see Simon Bridges be so hypocritical over the cost of petrol, as when he

was in government, he oversaw a rapid increase in petrol companies’ profit margins and did nothing, while increasing excise by 17 cents at the same time. This government is taking action. Given the concerns about anti-competitive behaviour in the fuel market, we are passing a law which will tool up the Commerce Commission to investigate the petrol market, including giving them the powers to force the petrol companies to hand over records and comply with an investigation.

A team of Mauao kaitiaki (guardians) will offer free training to help keep a damaging fungus off the Mount Maunganui landmark.

Pohutukawa trees that encircle the beachside mountain are susceptible to myrtle rust, as are resident manuka and kanuka. The fungal disease can affect flowers, shoots and leaves, maiming and sometimes killing the plant itself. On October 20, from 10am-midday, Tauranga Moana iwi and other conservationists will help show the public what to look for and what to do if they find infected plants.

The Manaaki Mauao event is part of a week-long series of biosecurity-related activities, co-ordinated by a new Tauranga-based biosecurity group.

Tauranga Moana Biosecurity Capital (TMBC), which launches on October 16, brings together local and national government, iwi, businesses and other organisations to tackle biosecurity threats in the region.

It is the first group of its kind in New Zealand.

Kaitiaki Kia Maia Ellis, who is co-ordinating the two-

hour myrtle rust education event at Labour Weekend, became involved after realising what could potentially happen to her beloved mountain.

“Some of those big pohutukawa on Mauao are hundreds of years old,” she says. “Without those trees, there would be erosion issues causing land slips, and that would lead to sedimentation of the harbour.

“It would damage archaeology, not to mention the danger to the public and the aesthetics – we all love to see our maunga covered in crimson blooms each summer.” Kia Maia is determined to build awareness of myrtle rust, to help stop its spread on Mauao as well as in parks, forest and back yards, on everything from manuka plants to feijoa trees. But her focus is largely on the Mount Maunganui icon, which she says is rich in history and tradition.

Community Magistrates appointed Five new Community Magistrates have been appointed for the Tauranga, Hamilton, Auckland and Christchurch regions.

Those appointed are Shaun Cole of Tauranga, Terence Bourke of Auckland, who will also sit in Hamilton, Lucy Daniels Whineray of Auckland and Simon Heale and Sally O’Brien of Christchurch.

Associate Justice and Courts Minister Aupito William Sio says the additional Community Magistrates will help assist in reducing court waiting times and provide judicial judgments on the lower end of criminal offending.

“The appointment of Community Magistrates increases the judicial resource available to the courts,” says Aupito. “As Magistrates tackle offending at the lower end of the spectrum, District Court Judges become free to provide their expertise on more serious and complicated cases.” Community Magistrates are judicial officers who deal with a wide-ranging body of work. They can impose sentences on persons who have been found guilty or plead guilty to certain minor, imprisonable offences, and can conduct defended hearings for a range of non-imprisonable offences.

Competitive cooking Like most contestants, they lounged on their sofa watching My Kitchen Rules NZ and thought to themselves: “This looks easy, sign us up!”

Couple Sindy Coetzee, 35, and Roger Smith, 42, who have been penned the lovebirds of Papamoa, met through work three years ago and, following some flirting at the coffee machine, became inseparable.

They are one of six teams on this year’s TVNZ 2 cooking show, with Whakatane cousins Pat Salmon, 31, and Wilz Ross, 29, also eyeing up the $100,000 prize money.

Roger says being on MKR has been a huge learning curve for them, and has helped them improve their cooking skills, presentation and the speed that their dishes need to be made.

“We have always loved to cook,” says Roger. “We’re always cooking food for family and bringing around food to our neighbour.

“But now, since the show, we cook more three course meals.”

Sindy says they decided to sign up on a whim, and before she finished the

application, MKR were calling her up saying they wanted them on the show.

“We were watching MKR one day,” she says, “and, at the time, we were like ‘these people can’t even cook, why would they let them on the show?’

“But we really didn’t know what we were getting ourselves into. Before I had even finished the application, they were calling me up asking me to finish it off, so there was obviously something in there that they liked.”

When you watch MKR on Saturday nights, you might see the word AfroKiwi tossed around.

“It’s basically just a mix between African and Kiwi,” says Roger.

“It has nothing to do with afros.

“Sindy is African, and I’m part Maori, so we wanted something that reflected both of our cultures.”

Roger says what’s benefited them the most throughout the competition is how well the pair work together, both in the kitchen and in business.

"We complement each other in everything we do,” he says, “and we know each other’s strengths. We are also very competitive, which is great for the show.”

Electric vehicles to test drive Café Scientifique Tauranga’s next monthly meeting will feature a talk on electric vehicles, providing an opportunity for the public to drive a variety of EVs and talk to their owners.

The meeting takes place on Monday, October 15, at the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club.

Flip the Fleet is a “citizen science” coalition of EV owners who submit data to a communal database each month to measure the constraints and benefits of electric vehicles in New Zealand conditions.

Monday evening’s talk will highlight opportunities for EVs to revolutionise transport and the economy.

It will then examine the strengths and weaknesses of citizen science as a research, education and

Wastewater testing to be rolled out nationally Wastewater testing is set to be rolled out across New Zealand, with the expansion of Police and Institute of Environmental Science and Research’s pilot programme. Testing will be rolled out to 38 sites across the 12 police districts this month and will capture 80 per cent of New Zealand’s population.

Police commissioner Mike Bush says wastewater testing is crucial to their understanding of drug consumption in our communities. “Expanding the programme to regional New Zealand and

advocacy tool to encourage sustainability transitions and innovation.

Government crackdown on loan sharks The government is introducing tough new measures to protect people from loan sharks and truck shops, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Kris Faafoi have announced.

You don’t have to be an art expert to appreciate the work artists put into each stroke.

Te Puke Art Society’s annual exhibition is on once again, showing off a range of art from the locals of the town.

“We work towards this event every year, and it’s just one of the many ways we can say Te Puke is here, come join us and see what we have to offer,” says Te Puke Art Society member Adrienne Cleaver.

Adrienne’s philosophy is that there is something for everyone to enjoy.

The exhibition will showcase work covering the whole spectrum of acrylic, oils, clay, ink and pottery.

“Our art varies,” says Adrienne. “There will be some art from regular artists as well as new artists.

“Pieces range from $30 to $200 – very reasonable prices – and some of that work is by semiprofessional artists. “We are also losing one our artists, Steven Clark, who is autistic. He’s moving to Taupo, so this is going to be the last time his work is going to be displayed in Te Puke.”

The exhibition will again have the support of Tokoroa Potters. “Their work is always very popular,” says Adrienne, “because it’s extremely quirky. Not just bowls and things. They sell a lot of work.”

Te Puke’s annual art exhibition will run from October 19-22, from 10am-3pm, at the Constables Gallery on Commerce Lane, one street off Jellicoe Street and just down from New World supermarket.

There will be signs placed around Te Puke township to direct visitors to the location.

Event backing school One of Papamoa’s favourite community events is returning for another year, promising an even bigger and better day for the whole family.

Event director Lesley Park says the event is even bigger than last year, with hundreds of spot prizes and generous race packs on offer - many of which have been donated by local businesses.

Community back glass recycling, says TCC A week into Tauranga’s new ratesfunded glass recycling collection, and the community has shown their support for the initiative, says Tauranga City Council. During the first week, more than 50 per cent of households in the collection areas had placed their blue glass recycling crate out to be collected.

“Of the crates put out in the first week of the new service, approximately 98 per cent were emptied,” says Tauranga City Council environment committee

chair Steve Morris. “I think we should all be very proud of that number, which shows the community understands how the service works, and is very keen to do the right thing and recycle their glass.”

Alix will be joining Dr Johan Louw as a second dentist at the practice and is excited to be part of a team who genuinely love dentistry, interacting with patients and making a difference in the way they look and feel about their smile.

Get spotted on Go Spotty Day Each year, more than 4000 Kiwis are diagnosed with melanoma in New Zealand - that’s around 13 people every day.

To support those affected and help raise awareness, Melanoma Awareness Week is proud to present Go Spotty Day. The nationwide event fittingly kicks off on Friday October 19 as we head into Labour Weekend - a line in the sand that we Kiwis often use to mark the start of summer.

Just like birthdays, Go Spotty Day will make the most of its time in the sun and take place for an entire week, running through until Friday October 26.

New app to learn te reo Maori through sport A new Maori sports app has been launched to help increase the use of te reo Maori in everyday family activities.

Puni Reo Ki-o-Rahi was designed to bring a traditional Maori game that has been handed down over the centuries into the digital world, making using te reo Maori on the sports field easy fun and accessible.

Te Puni Kokiri senior advisor, Eruera Lee-Morgan, says: “This app can help whanau use te reo Maori while participating in traditional and contemporary sports, with the support of the latest technology.

“It activates the use of Maori language in the sports domain where so many of our

people participate.”

Ki-o-Rahi is a ball sport played with a small round ball called a ki. It is a fast-paced game incorporating skills similar to rugby union, netball and touch.

The app follows on from a Maori language app for netball, Puni Reo Poitarawhiti, launched earlier in the year.

“We have purposefully targeted sports with high whanau involvement,” says Eruera. “According to statistics, there has been a decline in the number of Maori language speakers, so tools like this have the potential to help reverse that trend.”

The app is available for both Android and iOS users.

Tauranga Boys’ principal Robert Mangan says it was an easy decision to award the two high achievers the dual award.

“Traditionally, we have had an Old Boy of the Year and we wanted to do something special to recognise those old boys who have been most significant over the last decade,” says Robert.

“The two of them were both here in 2008 and I think their achievements on the world stage are unmatched by any other New Zealanders over that period of time.

“As a college, we should recognise those achievements.”

Mangan, who is approaching 30 years teaching at the school, says there was no question of trying to separate the two. “They are outstanding men,” he says, “role modelling what we want for old boys of Tauranga Boys’ College not only in terms of achievement, but in every facet of their personality, their performance and their response to media.

“I think Tauranga Boys’ College should have them recorded in their history. In the decades ahead, I think it is unlikely we are going to have old boys as significant as those two have been on the world stage.”

Both Williamson and Burling will attend the key note dinner next Saturday, with Jay Reeves set to MC the night. Teacher in charge of the old boys’ association Rob Leslie, who began teaching at Tauranga Boys’ College in 1979, says they would like to have honoured Williamson and Burling earlier, but it has always been

difficult to get them together.

“We have had a reasonable amount of activities over the last decade with the re-introduction of the old boys’ association,” says Rob. “The profile in a number of different ways has been reasonably high, and I guess we are trying to build on the momentum we have gained through that decade.”

The arts will also be under the spotlight next weekend with former Midnight Youth vocalist Jeremy Redmore and Elijah Taula, who performed at Christmas in the Park, among the musicians performing on Sunday morning. Tauranga Girls’ College will also celebrate 60 years since the split from the original Tauranga College in 1958 over Labour weekend.

The theme for the jubilee weekend is Wahine Toa: Aspirational agents of change, and is in keeping with this year’s Suffrage 125 milestone.

Several high-profile, former Tauranga Girls’ College students will be speaking at the event, including former mayor of Hamilton Julie Hardaker, Tarnished Frocks and Divas’ Denny Spee, Nurses’ Organisation advocate Carol Beaumont, former Trilogy CEO Angela Buglass, Repertoire’s Meghan Maher, Beewrapt’s Trudy Kendall and One News sports journalist Michelle Prendiville, who will also MC the event.

Captain Christie loving rugby at head of Volcanix Domain, ahead of the Steamers’ Mitre 10 Cup season swansong against Northland.

Any other result would defy the sense of destiny about the team, which echoes Christie’s own arrival in the game she loves.

Since moving from her home town of Hamilton to Papamoa, and through her student days at Mount Maunganui College, netball had been her game, but she always had other plans in the back of her mind.

“She’s instrumental,” he says. “She’s a natural leader of this group. Every single person within the group respects Christie, with the way she goes about her work and the way she handles herself on-and-off the field.

“She’s a top lady and she deserves all

the accolades she gets. To get captains that can draw everybody in and get the best out of people - it’s pretty challenging at times - but she’s one of those people that can actually do that, so a lot of credit needs to go to her.”

Netball and rugby

“I was lucky enough to do a lot of volunteer stuff as well as playing and coaching,” she explains, “and got an award from Netball New Zealand for my contribution to netball, so that was quite cool.

“Then I went off to university and re ally let loose on the rugby career.

“I always wanted to play rugby, but my parents didn’t want me to get injured.

“It was funny because I played numerous different sports and I got injured in all of them, including netball, so I just turned Bay of Plenty around in my last year of school and said Volcanix ‘well, I’m getting injured in everything else, skipper Christie why not let me have a go at rugby?’, and Yule. that was it really.

“I really enjoy netball and still have a passion for it, but my overall love was always rugby and once I got amongst that environment it was hard to split my time between the two Whether or not they hang on in the Farah sports and university, so I just stuck with rugby.

“I guess it’s starting to pay off for us now, and I think we’ve bonded a lot more as a team and that’s starting to show on the field.

“Success breeds success. We didn’t necessarily come into the season thinking this would be the year for Auckland, but we’ve been showing over the previous seasons that we’ve been closing the gap, and I think we just had the right people in the right places and we had the right intentions.

“One thing lead to another and we managed to get over the line for that one.”

Tamarillo growing a family affair at Pongakawa Despite the Bay of Plenty’s nippy, wet winter conditions, one of New Zealand’s biggest commercial tamarillo crops is tucked away at Pongakawa.

And it’s become a family affair, with Andy and Rachel Fowler’s three young sons – Tom, 11, Mac, 9, and Hugh, 7 – all playing a part

in the business.

Only 10 years ago Andy and Rachel bought 8ha of bare land, which was grazing drystock, with no plans for tamarillos.

Today, they have 3000 trees producing roughly 50 tonnes per season, making it one of the largest producers of the fruit for the domestic retail market.

“I just did a bit of a trial with one

block about eight years ago and wondered how it would go,” says Andy.

“It went quite well, so I put in another block and another block … next thing I knew we’d got everything we had in tamarillos.”

But he’s the first to admit tamarillos are a hard crop to grow. “Mainly this is due to pests, diseases, wind and frosts.”

Last year oldest son Tom wanted to buy a new motorbike, so Andy suggested he could pick up tamarillos off the orchard floor and sell them at Tauranga Farmers’ Market.

Now Tom has instigated paper bags for his fruit sales to be environmentally-friendly, and younger brothers Mac and Hugh are also getting involved.

Mac spent the last school holidays picking up reject fruit to sell to a lady making chutney, while Hugh is supplying tamarillos to Depot – celebrity chef Al Brown’s restaurant in Auckland.

Finally, you could go into the ballot for a Kiwibuild house.

Kiwi passport ranked eighth in the world The latest Henley Passport Index, which measures how many countries each passport allows visa-free entry to, has been revealed this week, with New Zealand currently in joint-eighth place.

According to the list, Kiwi passport holders can currently travel to 182 countries without the need for a visa – a number they share with the Czech Republic.

The Japanese passport is ranked as the most powerful in the world, allowing visa-free access to 190 countries across the globe.

They are just ahead of previous table-toppers Singapore (189), joint-third nations Germany, France and South Korea (188) and joint-fourth European countries Denmark, Finland, Italy, Sweden and Spain (187).

Among the passports in joint-fifth place, allowing access to 186 countries, are the UK and America.

At the other end of the list, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to just 30 countries, are Iraq and Afghanistan.

Study warns of complacency among Kiwi homeowners New Zealanders are still too laid-back about having written contracts and guarantees for building work, and most are not asking for seismic work when undertaking a build or renovation.

A NZ Certified Builders survey has found 50 per cent of homeowners who used a builder to renovate or build a home in the past 10 years did not

have a written contract.

Of the work done without a written contract, 23 per cent was for work valued at more than $30,000.

NZCB chief executive Grant Florence says this complacency is consistent with the NZCB’s 2016 survey, and is worrying given that legislative change in 2015 made written contracts mandatory for building work over $30,000.

“For our part, NZCB provides our member builders with template contracts to help ensure they adhere to the highest professional standards,” says Grant.

“But it’s also really important for homeowners to be proactive in asking whatever builder they choose for a written contract, ideally for any job regardless of the size and cost.”

The survey also revealed only 44 per cent of homeowners had a building guarantee in place for their last build or renovation in the past 10 years.

“While the majority of respondents believe their builder should have responsibility for addressing any problems with their building work, without a written contract and a robust building guarantee when undertaking building work, homeowners are exposing

themselves to significant risk, as are builders,” says Grant.

The survey also indicates homeowners could be more proactive about managing potential seismic risks.

Less than one in five respondents that had undertaken building work in the past 10 years said they had seismic work actively included in their last build or renovation.

“The data suggests that, although there were small increases in people actively specifying seismic work as part of a building project immediately following the 2011 and 2016 major quakes, this tends to taper off and be less ‘front of mind’ for Kiwis as time goes on,” adds Grant.

Home gardening tips for spring planting With the weather warming up, and trees, bushes and flowers beginning to sprout, now’s a popular time to rediscover your garden ahead of the spring season.

As you start planning your garden, consider what chemicals you plan to use and how you plan to manage the risks from those chemicals around your home.

“When you first get out into the garden at the start of spring, it’s a good time to take a stocktake of the existing chemicals around your home,” says Lizzie Wilson, spokesperson for the Environmental Protection Authority’s (EPA) Safer Homes Programme.

“A common home gardening myth is that natural, organic and environmentally friendly products are safer to use,” says Lizzie. “These substances can still be hazardous and the same precautions need to be taken, like wearing gloves.”

Weed killers, pest sprays, fertilisers and other gardening products are considered hazardous substances. Take extra care when using these to protect yourself, others and the environment.

If you are spraying near edible plants, check the label to see how long you need to wait before the plant can be harvested. Consider wearing gloves, and check the label to see if you need other protection, like a

facemask or safety glasses.

Keep products away from your eyes and face and off your skin.

Focus on housing and urban development A new Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has been established in an attempt to help build New Zealand out of the national housing crisis.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford says the new ministry will aim to restore the basic

right to healthy, affordable housing for all New Zealanders.

“Housing and urban development is too important to New Zealand, and too complex an area to remain split across government agencies,” says Phil.

“We need one single, strong organisation to lead across agencies and across the housing and urban development system.

“We need to focus government efforts because the housing shortage is hurting New Zealanders.

“Too many people are homeless, in poor quality housing or locked out of home ownership.”

The new ministry unites a range of previously fragmented housing policy, funding and regulatory functions from the Ministry of

Business, Innovation and Employment – including Kiwibuild – the Ministry of Social Development and the treasury.

The Ministry of Social Development will continue to be the go-to place for those that are homeless, urgently in need a place to stay or in need access to public housing and other types of support.

Buying a second home: Should you sell first or buy first?

When it comes to upsizing or downsizing a property, homeowners are faced with a big decision – is it better to sell the existing home first, or buy the new place first?

Real Estate Authority Chief Executive Kevin Lampen-Smith says there’s no right way to tackle it, but it’s important for homeowners to think carefully about their appetite for risk. Both options come with pros and cons and their own unique set of challenges and pressures.

“Buying first provides the luxury of time, meaning it’s possible to hunt for homes without a settlement date looming on the horizon,” says Kevin.

“A buyer is able to consider as many houses as they like, move at their own pace and keep searching until they find the property that’s right for them and their family.”

While time might be on your side, your finances might not be. To secure the new home, buyers will need to come up with the funds for a deposit, which might be tricky if equity is tied up in the existing property.

Buying first means there are suddenly double the bills to pay, including home insurance, rates and utility bills as well as absorbing the cost of bridge financing in order to pay two mortgages.

“The extra financial strain can sometimes mean sellers pressure themselves into setting a modest listing price for their existing house or New Zealand’s Quietest Heat Pumps

accepting a lower offer, just to seal the deal quickly,” says Kevin.

On the flip side, selling first can give homeowners a much clearer picture of their financial situation.

Once the existing home is sold, you’ll know exactly how much cash you have to play with and what you can afford to buy.

“However, once an offer has been accepted on the current home, the clock starts ticking towards settlement day,” adds Kevin “Some buyers then feel added pressure to make an offer on a home that doesn’t exactly fit their needs or wish list, because they’re so focused on finding a new place to move into.”

To avoid this, Kevin suggests negotiating a long settlement period on the existing home, to allow enough time to find a new property.

However, this isn’t always possible, so homeowners should consider what their plan B will be.

In a tight rental market, it can be very challenging to find short-term accommodation, which is why many turn to friends or family.

It’s also important to consider the added costs of moving household belongings twice and paying for a storage unit.

There are pros and cons to both approaches, but homeowners can lighten the load by ensuring all their ducks are in a row.

“Speak to your bank or a mortgage advisor to get your finances in order and then build your support crew,” says Kevin.

“For example, you’re going to need legal advice, a licensed real estate agent to sell your property, an insurer and a building inspector.”

However, as your home is likely to be your biggest asset, it’s important to prepare for some hiccups along the way and have time or extra funds set aside to deal with these.

Building a strong support crew of qualified professionals will ensure you have the advice and guidance you need at each stage of the process.

How much for your eyes?

There’s been a very clever optician advert recently that asks people how much they’d be willing to sell their eyes for. Even those being offered millions say no!

The catch of the advert is that if your eyes are so important to you, then you should look after them and go to the opticians. It’s a fair question about what you put value on, and if you’d rather have a healthy bank balance or healthy eyes.

But what about your soul? Jesus asked the question: “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” (Matthew 16v26).

The answer is clear. There’s nothing that you can give in exchange for your soul, therefore look after it. How can you look after it?

The answer lies in Jesus’ words of the previous verse: “Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.”

It’s in giving up your own ambitions and plans, and embracing what it means to be a follower of Jesus, that you find life, life in all its fullness and life eternal.

In the words of the Christian Martyr Jim Elliot: “He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.”

The study of habits – those things we do regularly and ‘almost involuntarily’ – is fascinating, in that it reveals so much. Habits, I suspect, have more of an influence on our well-being and productivity than we appreciate.

Habits are powerful things. They reveal, ruin and rebuild your life.

Habits can make or break us. I’m sure there are those we know of whose lives have been ruined by bad habits.

Conversely, there are those we admire for their success and good fortune and how well they’ve done in life, which they would say are simply the result of their habits.

Of course, there are the daily habits we have grown up to follow. But there are other habits that we do or don’t do that can have a huge impact upon our life.

American author James Clear says: “The way to become something is to do that – write to be a writer, run to be a runner. Our identity emerges out of the habits that we have. If you can change your habits you can change your life.”

Jesus lived by a number of habits, and one is recorded in Luke 22:39: “Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him,” (NKJV).

It’s true. Habits can reveal, ruin and rebuild your life. Good habits put us in a position to succeed in life and receive the fruit of invested finance, time and talents.

Don’t let anything or anyone corrupt your good habits!

Reading from the same page P Burrell of Katikati is wrong that there is no mention of what the values espoused by New Zealand First should be (The Weekend Sun, October 5). They were very clearly defined at the convention but, as always, the media chose selective reporting.

Mechanisms are needed to keep New Zealand respected by those who come here to live. Many come from countries where women are treated as second-class citizens, and violence, and only one form of religion is tolerated.

New Zealand has laws that don’t allow this. We have gender equality, laws against violence, and religious freedom.

Immigrants need to understand their religion and culture will be respected here, but they must respect ours and obey the laws of the land.

They should not try to change the way we do things.

It’s not racist, simply respect for the way we live here. It’s

What the heck is going on? Capital gains madness Among the often excessive bashing of Tauranga City Council there’s some issues that TCC deserves to be criticised and questioned over. A lack of information and response to troubling matters affecting ratepayers is a general one. A couple of ‘what the heck is going on?’ issues they’ve failed to adequately talk about follow.

Why has the infamous Bella Vista homes scandal failed to get sorted?

Is it a case of being silenced by lawyers and insurance companies? Multiple levels of failure

by TCC have enabled a debacle. As easy as it is to be wise after the event, when I saw the sites a few months ago I wondered how permits to build could have been signed off without remediation works being first carried out to make the land

suitable for high density housing, if at all.

In my opinion the innocent, if somewhat naïve property owners should have been absolutely recompensed for council’s failure – a blot on the organisation.

The Willow Street ‘container park’ may be funky to some people but I’m not amused.

Come on council, get your act together.

This is an eyesore and not what a city heart needs. Show some leadership or step down.

Tauranga needs rail system Re ‘Decent transport system needed’ (The Weekend Sun, September 28).

The writer stated “By golly, do I have to point it out? All of those who choose to live outside the city but want to work in it should have a decent rail system with the appropriate amount of stations and car parks.” I have, for a long time, sat in all the traffic gazing at all the rail lines sitting idle, thinking ‘why, oh why, don’t the council look at rail?’

We need an alternative transport system, like all cities that grow. Rail comes into the city from Te Puke,

It’s not about equity. This all following an election in 2017 full of promises, including no new taxes.

Despite wayward left-wing political agendas, a capital gains tax on shares, property and all other gains seems

fair. Provided personal tax rates were dropped so as overall it’s tax neutral.

Like that will happen!

The justification superficially is to restore fairness overall (mythical socialism), however there’s no fairness if those paying too much now don’t benefit from the change.

The reality is, less tax collections and less bureaucrat spending is best for the economy. The less thinking, considering or planning by bureaucracy about spending eliminates the need for new taxes.

The less citizens are taxed for working, achieving and succeeding legitimately, the more an economy will grow, benefiting all.

Omokoroa, Otumoetai, the Matapihi rail bridge, and Maungatapu. With stations and parking in those areas people could park cars and head into the city, travel back, pick up their cars and drive home as I, and many Wellingtonians, have done for years.

Re the article ‘Class of ‘57’ (page 6, The Weekend Sun, October 5).

Tauranga District High School did not exist in 1957. In 1946, pupils from the Tauranga District High School, part of the primary school complex on Cameron Road between Arundel Street and 5th Avenue, moved to the newly-built Tauranga College at the Hillsdene location on Cameron Road, near 13th Avenue. Tauranga District High School then ceased to exist.

Tauranga College was a co-educational college from 1946 to 1957. In 1958 that Hillsdene site became Tauranga Boys’ College. There was a transition year for the girls in 1957: in 1958 Tauranga Girls’ College was officially opened. The ex-pupils of Tauranga College still hold an annual reunion for those who attended the co-ed college from 1946 to 1957.

Battling it out to be a country star Somewhere in New Zealand Tonight is what Kiwi-born entertainer Glen Moffatt will be singing at the 42nd annual New Zealand Country Music Star Awards held over this coming Labour weekend.

The NZCM Star Awards will be playing host to more than 140 contestants from all over the country at Bethlehem Performing Arts Centre on October 20-21.

They’ll be battling it out for a share of the $6500 prize pool, which includes a record package, and one lucky intermediate or senior winner will be given the chance to represent New Zealand at the Trans-Tasman Entertainer of the Year event held at the 2019 Norfolk Island Country Music Festival.

The entrants will put their best voice forward for Saturday’s auditions in front of six prestigious judges, including the New Zealand Country Music Association patron Dennis August and Scottish country music icon Adrienne Toner.

The auditions will run from approximately 8.30am through until 4.30pm.

From the 140 entrants, the top scoring two from each section will then go through

to the premier finals show, to be held at 1pm on the Sunday.

Competing artists will then battle it out for the overall prize in junior, intermediate, senior, veteran and songwriter categories, which will gain them entry into the 2019 New Zealand Country Music Entertainer of the Year.

Guest artist, New Zealand-born Glen Moffatt, who has performed alongside Gray Bartlett, Brendan Dugan and Ritchie Pickett, now resides in Australia but says he is looking forward to flying home for this annual event.

As well as a chance to experience island culture and customs, the 12km walk will take in stunning views via interesting and varied terrain, including farmland, hills, road and estuary.

The walk will leave at 10am from the wharf at Matakana Island to Te Ahipuhipuhi and over the hills.

Participants will need to meet at the Omokoroa Road Jetty at 8.30am on Sunday, October 21 with a packed lunch, drinks and snacks to catch the scheduled ferry departure at 9am.

Sturdy walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing is also advised Ferry cost is $10 adult return and $5 child return, payable in cash direct to the ferry.

Return barges operate throughout the afternoon.

Tickets for the walk cost $20 per adult, $10 per child (aged 12 and under) and $50 per family (two adults and two children or one adult and three children).

If weather is poor, the postponement date will be Sunday, October 28.

Ivories of Baycourt’s Steinway piano Following massive public demand, Friends of Baycourt is bringing its popular Steinway Open Day back to Baycourt Community and Arts Centre this Labour Weekend.

For the second time this year, Friends of Baycourt is hosting its popular Steinway Open Day in the Baycourt Community & Arts Centre Addison Theatre on Sunday, October 21.

For the second time this year, keen musicians can play Baycourt’s magnificent Steinway D-274 grand concert piano at the open day on Sunday, October 21, from 10am.

Friends of Baycourt chairperson Anna Finlayson-Smith says if you missed out in March, then get in quick because she expects the timeslots will be snapped up swiftly.

“Those who took part in the open day in March were amazed by the Steinway,” says Anna, “and loved the opportunity to play what many called the ‘best piano in the world’.

“It was also a real pleasure for us to see many young people who took part in 2017’s open day return in March, and show us the progress they’d made over the past 12 months.”

The open day is for people of all ages and abilities, and there is no charge to play the Steinway. But you must book a timeslot before Saturday, October 20.

“You can play any music and are most welcome to bring an audience,” adds Anna. “In fact, we encourage you to do so.

“The open day is also perfect for music teachers who want to bring their pupils.”

The Steinway Open Day is at Baycourt Community and Arts Centre, Durham Street, Tauranga, on Sunday October 21, from 10am. Entry is free but bookings are essential.

Earthquake and tsunami drill to ‘get gone’ Would you consider yourself ready if a quake hit at any time?

At 9.30am on October 18, New Zealand will be taking part in ShakeOut, an international earthquake drill and tsunami hikoi (walk).

It’s important that you, your family and your friends know what to do in the event of an earthquake or tsunami, so this is the perfect opportunity to prepare.

If you practice these drills twice a year you have a significantly lower chance of being injured in one of these events. So what do you need to do?

Local artists win APRA Silver Scroll Award Ria Hall and Tiki Taane.

Bay of Plenty artists Ria Hall and Tiki Taane, along with co-writer Te Ori Paki, have received the Maioha Award at the 2018 APRA Silver Scroll Awards for the ballad ‘Te Ahi Kai Po’.

The APRA Maioha Award recognises exceptional waiata featuring te reo Maori.

The song is from Ria’s new album The Rules of Engagement, and follows on from her Best Female Artist award at the 11th annual Waiata Maori Music Awards last month.

Te Ahi Kai Po (the fire burning in the darkness) is about finding resolution in tragic circumstances, and healing after the tragedy of war. It also raises awareness of inter-generational cultural disenfranchisement and draws on Ria’s own family history.

Thousands rocked up to turn Tauranga’s streets pink for the annual Hot Pink Walk on Wednesday.

The aim of the event is to raise money and awareness of breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Support Service Tauranga Trust provides support, advocacy and education for women and men who have or are experiencing breast cancer, as well as their families and the wider community.

The Hot Pink Walk is one of several fundraising events the trust holds each year, attracting around 3000 people to the CBD who raided their wardrobes, hit the op shops and got their hands on anything and everything pink to support the cause.
