Lunatic labelling takes grandiose to new levels Society’s headlong plunge into PC lunacy continues. The signs are all there. Literally.

On the side of the road.

A few years ago, astute Sun readers pointed out the ridiculous “Pavement Rehabilitation” which we think means “road works”. Now the whole country is sliding down the slippery slopes of lunatic labelling.

We don’t have rubbish dumps any more. Not even refuse sites. We instead have a proliferation of fancy named places such as ‘transfer stations’.

Where in the name ‘transfer station’ does it suggest that’s where we dispose of our rubbish? It sounds more like somewhere you drop grandma off after a weekend visit.

Even Tauranga.co.nz even feels the need to explain – to assure residents they’re not taking their rubbish to a bus station.

“What is a Transfer Station?” the website asks.

Sorry, but even Rotovegans can’t escape the fact that rubbish is rubbish. This is a rubbish dump. There is nothing sanitary about that.

Hmm… a far smaller circulation, surveys show it’s poorly read and those who do bother to read it complain to me that its cartoon, simpleton style is demeaning and childish.

Junior jail

And just up the road they’ve come up with a highly impressive new label for the place young bad-asses go: ‘Youth Justice Facility’.

Now we could be wrong here, but isn’t this just a trumped up PC name for Junior Jail?

Te Maioha o Parekarangi, for the record, is a junior jail for just 30 naughty persons, costing $47million to build, $7.3million a year to operate and reportedly 100 staff to run.

It’s a shame we don’t have those sort of resources for the law abiding, tax paying all their life, pensioners.

And that prisoner-to-staff ratio makes a mockery of our teacher-pupil ratio.

Should we not be putting more effort and teacher resources into young children, rather than waiting until they are placed in these preciously-named facilities to shower them with support?

Thanks everyone for the huge response to last week’s column. Here at RR headquarters we have been deluged with suggestions for Tauranga’s proposed new vision statement.

Several people have put forward suggestions, but on the proviso that they don’t want to be eligible for any of the prizes, which as you may recall, involved swanky lunches, travel and the scintillating company of some of Tauranga’s most illustrious leaders.

Your one line side swipe at poor old Aaron Gilmore rests uneasily with me while your paper swamps us with spreads and columns on Brendon Horan as he worms his way back into public affection.

Poor old Aaron was, after all, doing a public service by exposing himself as yet another ******** - pulling $140,000pa courtesy of the long suffering tax payer.

The very least you could have done is publish a wine list showing Aaron’s favourite, that way he would possibly have sniffed another sure source of income as the winemaker’s billboard celebrity and resigned.

Commemoration Gate Pa battle planning under way

When a younger Buddy Mikaere attended the centennial celebrations of the Battle of Gate Pa in 1964, you could have been forgiven for thinking the British won, he told councillors this week.

“In 1964 I got the impression the British won, the way it was promoted,” says Buddy.

The battle at Pukehinahina involved the largest artillery bombardment in the New Zealand wars and resulted in a Maori military victory. It took place where Cameron Rd today swings past St George’s Anglican Church.

The green slope up the hill from Mitre 10 is the battle ground where Maori, armed with muskets, defeated a British military assault of far superior numbers, after a day-long barrage by artillery and

mortars failed to reduce the pa.

Buddy who won the commemoration essay competition in 1964, is co-ordinating the 150th commemorations. Along with the speeches, an essay competition and period dinners, in April 2014, there will be a march from the girls’ college up to the former battle site where the marchers will be challenged by a haka party comprising contingents from all the iwi who fought at Gate Pa, armed with replica carved muskets.

The commemorations will also involve the historic mission house The Elms which will be the scene of a period dinner and a possible vice-regal afternoon tea.

Funding is coming from Lotteries Commission, TECT and other sources. An Armstrong gun, similar to the model used in the artillery barrage, will also be on display for the commemoration.

Father’s drowning a ‘tragedy’ Moses Vahai near where his father drowned.

The death of a Greerton man who drowned in the harbour while out fishing with his son was a tragedy that could have been prevented, according to a Coroner this week.

Dr Wallace Bain says the death of 56-year-old Moses Vahai in September 2011 was an “accident waiting to happen” as the 3metre dinghy the pair were in was 200kg overweight and they were not wearing lifejackets.

Moses drowned when the dinghy he was fishing in with his 20-year-old son Moses Junior became swamped in Rangataua Bay in September 2011.

The pair had gone out net fishing in a three metre aluminium dinghy on September 22 when the boat started to take on water forcing the father and son into the water.

Moses Junior was able to swim back to shore, but Moses senior struggled and eventually drowned, a Coroner’s inquest in Tauranga heard.

Pregnant woman flees fire

A pregnant woman was forced to flee her Mount Maunganui home when it caught fire as she went into labour this week.

The 21-year-old woman had just gone into labour when her and her 27-year-old partner smelled smoke in their Oceanbeach Road house around 3am on Monday.

Firefighters from Mount Maunganui and Tauranga arrived to find the couple, their two and a half-year-old son and midwife at the house.

Tauranga senior station officer Nigel Liddicoat says the couple were “very lucky” they had woken to the fire as there was no working smoke alarm in the house.

The residents were allowed to return to the premises where the woman gave birth to a son later that day.

Man ejected in car crash

A 42-year-old Tauranga man was injured after being thrown from a car that crashed in Te Puna this week.

Emergency services were called to the crash at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Minden Road around 9.30am on Wednesday.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says a passenger of a blue Honda was ejected from the vehicle in the crash.

He was treated at the scene and taken to hospital via St John Ambulance in a serious condition.

Surf lifesaving legend dies

Surf Life Saving New Zealand legend Louis Jordain will be farewelled at Mount Maunganui Surf Club today.

The 81-year-old longtime Mount Surf Club member died last Sunday after suffering with illness for some time.

SLSNZ general manager Mark Weatherall says Louis was a very proud member of the Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service and was a pioneer in the development of the IRB in New Zealand.

“Louis has done a huge amount for surf life saving over the years. He put a huge amount into surf life saving across the country and he will definitely be missed across the board.”

His funeral is at Mount Surf Club 3pm on Friday, May 17.

Fuelled Alcohol is fuelling around 70 per cent of all incidents dealt with by Western Bay Police.

This is particularly true of minors drinking in public places and being unaccompanied by a parent or legal guardian, says alcohol harm reduction and liquor licensing co-ordinator Sergeant Nigel McGlone.

“This is an offence for under 18-year-olds and can result in a $200 instant fine.

“The greatest danger is the unsupervised or uncontrolled drinking by young people. They will experiment and push the limits when not under supervision and this can have serious and sometimes fatal consequences through accidents and medical issues.”

Only a parent or legal guardian may legally supply alcohol to a person under 18.

Nigel warns people should also be responsible for the circumstances under which alcohol is supplied.

“Giving a young person a dozen beers or RTDs and sending them off to a party with other unsupervised young people would not be cool.

“Persons other than a parent or legal guardian who buy or obtain alcohol to supply it to a person under 18 – even their older brothers, sisters, other whanau, friends and relatives – risk a $2000 fine.”

Nigel says if the fine sounds a lot, what price would you put on the well-being and life of a young person you know?

Weather helping to knock down Rena

Rough weather, which has been the bane of the salvors working on the wreck of the Rena, has been enlisted in knocking down the last of the wreck, says Maritime NZ spokesman Reece Golding.

At this week’s projects and monitoring committee meeting, Reece told Tauranga councillors that as salvors have been cutting the remnant down to sea level, they have been cutting pieces to where they almost fall free and leaving the weather to knock them off.

The remainder of the container ship has been whittled down to only a small section that now breaks the surface.

Helicopters have been unable to land for some time, instead choosing to hover, perching on one skid while salvors are being transferred to the remainder of the ship.

“They would put a skid down to allow people onto the forward section,” says Reece. “It is pretty precarious.”

The Resolve Salvage and Fire contract is to reduce the wreckage to one metre below the lowest low tide. There’s about another 200-300 tonne to go. So far there has been 1009 tonne of steel

landed from the wreck-reduction part of the work.

In recent weeks, divers have shifted their focus from clearing the reef to removing the last of the problem containers from the ship’s aft section, which is lying further down the reef.

The concerns are three containers of ferro silicon, two containers of plastic beads and one of copper. An estimated 26 tonne of beads are in containers in No 4 hold at a depth of 19 metre.

It’s labour-intensive work, and divers have been removing bags of beads by hand, when they can.

A floating boom on the surface prevents loose beads from escaping, and they are being scooped up using whitebait nets, says Reece.

Getting to the beads is difficult. They have had to cut through sections of the ship and get past furniture, “hundreds” of trampolines, and tyres.

During the last week, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday were dive days when 135 intact bags were recovered by hand from the re-located container.

Online invites targetted A Western Bay of Plenty Police officer believes “harking back to written invitations” might be a good way to stop uninvited people attending parties.

Alcohol harm reduction and liquor licensing coordinator Sergeant Nigel McGlone says Western Bay of Plenty Police have attended a number of private parties this year where steps have been required to deal with people who have turned up uninvited.

“The issue has not been a great one and on most occasions, communication with the property occupier or responsible person, and the ‘uninvited’ has been sufficient to have any issue dealt with.

Nigel says on occasion, police will visit the address early to let the party organiser know that police are aware of the party, before any trouble might start.

“Parents and caregivers need to make their children, when advertising parties on Facebook and other social media sites, realise the implications of the ‘open invitation’ for themselves, their parent and the community.

“Hosting a party involves responsibility in relation to the security, behaviour and conduct of those attending, and knowing those attending.”

Students and staff at Otumoetai College are creating conversation today by wearing pink t-shirts in an attempt to power up against bullying.

Today is National Pink Shirt Day and some residents of ther egion are donning pink shirts in an effort to dispel bullying and raise awareness. Otumoetai College Year 10 students Reanna Inglis and Jaime Mercer say students have the power to speak out about bullying. “Bullying is a depressing subject which harms students. That’s why we’re trying

to get the message out to support people in need. So they know if they do get bullied they can always speak out”, says Jaime.

“There’s a whole story about it how this guy got bullied wearing a pink shirt at school and the next day all of his friends wore a pink shirt to school to support him,” says Reanna.

Principal Dave Randell says the college was one of the first schools in the country to join in the antibullying campaign about five years ago and has since hosted Pink Shirt Day at the school annually.

“We have the thing called the Otumoetai Way in our school.

What we’re trying to do is have a

bully-free school.

“We’re just trying to say to our students, you should feel safe, you should feel good about coming to school and if you are so called bullied or harassed, the thing to do is seek support.”

Tauranga City Councillor Murray Guy is also donning a pink shirt in support of antibullying today and is encouraging others to do the same.

“There’s no question that intimidation and bullying is almost epidemic. It has increased since I was young. Here’s an opportunity to stand up and be counted and say we give a damn.”

High hopes for walk

Organisers Tui Hambrook and Clare Worden enjoy the view on top of Papamoa Hills.

For the first time, organisers of the Papamoa Hills Walk have opened a second night for the event due to high ticket demand.

Organised by Tauranga women Tui Hambrook and Clare Worden, the event has steadily grown each year – raising more than $2000 in 2012 for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

This year, the May 24 walk has sold out and tickets for the May 25 walk are now available.

Tui is thrilled the event has taken off, and is proud to offer an experience people can really enjoy.

“We can recommend it to people wholeheartedly and not just because we want their money.”

Tui and Clare spend time in the hills every week and say sharing their passion for the area is one of the

Russell Lake was crowned a national 100km champion in Christchurch.

With three titles and more than 250km under his belt, it’s fair to say Russell Lake can give his running shoes a well-deserved rest.

The 43-year-old Tauranga rambler has had a busy past three months clocking up an impressive 252km in racing, with a 100 per cent title strike rate – including a national title.

In his maiden appearance at the 100km championships last weekend, Russell navigated the 2km course in Hagley Park, Christchurch in blistering fashion to claim his first national title in a time of 8.08.52 – nearly 51 minutes ahead of second place David Ryan from Wellington.

Russell entered the race purely for the challenge of running the distance and attempt national champion status.

Forced to chase the race from the beginning, Russell says he clawed his way back to take the lead at the halfway mark after coming to grips with the repetitive circuit.

“Running the race in a 2km circuit was a little daunting to begin with but the circuit allowed for regular hydration which was good.

“They ran away from me at the start and I had to chase pretty hard. They were about 2km ahead of me and it took me 30 kilometres to catch them.”

Pushing his body to the limit, Russell says his body is beginning to feel the strain after claiming the off road based 85km Tarawera Ultramarathon in March, and the 67km Length of the Lake race in Taupo – with a course record of 4.59hours – in February.

“Since there was seven weeks between the Tarawera Ultramarathon [and the 100km] I didn’t have much time to get in some solid training.

“I probably don’t do as much as most people with only 90-100km a week.”

Satisfied with this year’s achievements, he is looking to rediscover his love and excitement for the sport.

“I will have a break and just run because I want to run, not because I have to run.”

Longest bridge almost complete Work on the longest bridge on the Tauranga Eastern Link project is almost complete.

The final pouring of concrete took place this week which forms the deck of the 150 metre length Kaituna River Bridge, lying within the new highway road from Domain Rd to Paengaroa.

Since one of their mobile classrooms was gutted by fire last June, the Life Education Trust Western Bay of Plenty is moving on – with a new high-tech classroom for Harold the Giraffe.

The new mobile classroom will be first among 46 across the country to feature Microsoft Kinect technology – which can replicate a person’s skeleton and organs as they stand in front of a screen.

Meanwhile, trust patron, community magistrate judge Robyn Paterson, has received a life membership award; while the trust won the 2013 Western Bay of Plenty Community Awards’ education and child/youth devel-

opment category.

Trust chair Debbie Given says a new mobile classroom will be built by the year end, to replace a classroom, at Brookfield Primary (worth $225,000) was destroyed by fire.

“Life Education Trust WBOP is going to re-build a replacement this year – it’ll be one of the first in New Zealand to have new generation technology, and a new classroom design.”

The digital software can show a person’s internal organs, and individual views, of the skeleton, nervous system, brain and other body parts – all by remote control.

As children react in the classroom, an “improved reality” of the images become their organs and skeletons.

Last year, two paid educators

delivered the Life Education Trust Programme, via two mobile classrooms, to more than 12,000 Western Bay primary/ intermediate children at 49 schools.

“Our educators are very excited the programme will be advanced by the end of this year.”

The new high-tech programme will be available for schools to download. “The technology will be the most exciting part of the classroom – it’ll be interactive and be such an amazing learning experience.”

The trust is to meet with the community; and wants to speak with local businesses keen to donate time and interior fittings, and have an on-going involvement in the new classroom.

Opinion sought on coastline’s future A draft plan, for managing water quality, natural character, infrastructure and other activities along the Bay of Plenty’s coastline, is now open for public input.

Bay of Plenty regional council staff consulted district and city council staff, Department of Conservation, coastal iwi and hapu, Port of Tauranga, Opotiki Marine Advisory Group, Regional Aquaculture Organisation, Estuary Care Groups and Forest and Bird representatives during development of the draft plan.

Changes to the existing plan include a new integrated management section that updates information on water quality, natural heritage and coastal hazards (where effects cross the land and water), new policies and rules for managing mangroves and aquaculture, updated biodiversity assessments and clearer guidance on how to manage natural heritage.

Public feedback is now being sought until June 28, 2013 before amendments are made and a proposed plan is created by the end of the year.

Construction on the bridge commenced in January 2012 and is expected to be completed next month. When the bridge is finished, its specifications will include 2500m3 of poured concrete, 19,000 nuts and bolts, 1000 tonne of structural steel, 68 piles and three piers.

The Kaituna River bridge will be opened to traffic when the Tauranga Eastern Link project is completed.

This is scheduled for 2016.

Erin has been selected to take part in the Global Young Leaders Conference – a unique leadership development discussion taking place in China, Europe and the United States.

The 17-year-old, with a group of other young scholars from schools throughout New Zealand, will travel from Washington D.C. to New York City in July.

During the 14-day trip, students interact with key leaders holding powerful influences in politics, finance, culture and diplomacy.

Mount Maunganui College head drama teacher Wayne Flanagan is in his 11th year of directing and still keeping the audience on their toes with winning performances.

His scene ‘As You Like It’ won the region’s 15 minute adult-directed scene section in the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare festival held in the school hall on April 10.

Wayne and the involved students head to the nationals in Wellington on Queen’s Birthday weekend at the end of this month.

Wayne, who is also the SGCNZ Bay of Plenty regional representative, says the secret to a good Shakespeare performance is voice.

“Voice is the secret and speaking to the original intention of Shakespeare when he wrote the scripts.

If you stray too far from the original intention then you lose the message and the meaning.

“The most exciting part is the way the students gather an understanding of the nature of Shakespeare and the way it’s performed and that they form their own ideas of how to interpret the script of Shakespeare and put it across to the audience.

The biggest part of that is to find the fun in the script.”

Evening of the rising sun The depth of Japanese culture will be highlighted next week when the Tauranga Regional Multicultural Council holds an evening focussed on the Asian culture.

One year success for group Almost 60 new Bay residents are enjoying friendships and company made through Merge – the social group set up by Tauranga woman Sandra Allan one year ago.

The group, ranging from 30 to 60 year olds, meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month and enjoy a guest speaker once a month.

The evening, a re-enactment of a Japanese festival with stalls offering various activities, is held as part of the council’s Living in Harmony series where members of Tauranga’s diverse culture groups share their traditions.

Regional council president Ewa Fenn is excited to have members of the Japanese community put on their first display of their culture in the six years the series has been running.

“The evening is being put on by members of the Japanese community to let people learn more about their country, their traditions and the culture – it’s for absolutely anyone who is interested in Japanese culture.”

The evening, which includes a presentation about Japan, will offer a chance to get hands-on with the culture by making origami, playing with traditional Japanese toys, trying on a kimono and sampling traditional Japanese food.

“We expect a fantastic evening with traditional music, beautiful costumes and a real immersion in the Japanese culture during this re-enactment of a festival in Japan.”

The Japanese Evening is at the Historic Village Hall, off Tauranga’s 17th Ave, on Wednesday, May 22 from 7pm. Free entry with a plate of food for the potluck dinner. Details: 571 6419.

Residents take action over vehicle thefts Residents in the city’s western suburbs are taking action with police to combat a spate of thefts from vehicles in the last month.

In the last three weeks, there has been a jump in the number of property thefts from vehicles parked on private property in the suburbs of Matua and Otumoetai.

Tauranga community constable Matt Elliott says there is a group of people targeting vehicles in the western suburbs.

“There have been a noticeable number of vehicles targeted in Matua.”

Matt says the culprits are going from property to property checking for unlocked cars that make for easy targets.

“Quite often vehicles are off the street.

Vehicles are not any safer when they parked off the road – wherever your vehicle is parked it needs to be locked.

“In some weeks, the majority of thefts from vehicles reported to Police were from vehicles that were unlocked. They are looking for the easy vehicle, and this is not just in Matua.”

On a number of occasions, items of value have been left visible in the car, increasing the risk of a break-in.

“Mainly items on display in the vehicle are taken – like iPods, cash, cell phones and wallets, left in the car are the popular items.”

Richard Kluit has lived in the suburb for 30 years and says this is the first time he is aware of such an increase in thefts.

“There has been nothing like this before, Matua is usually pretty crime-free compared to the rest of the city. The problem started a number of weeks ago and has grown.

“We are not free of crime, and quite often when it has happened it has been someone in the community.”

He knows friends in Matua and Otumoetai who have had their cars broken into during the last month, with their windows smashed and items removed.

“A lot of the thefts are happening near the end of Matua Peninsula.”

The residents association has decided to take action by erecting signs saying ‘Lock your vehicles’. Signs are situated on Levers Rd near Otumoetai Pa site entrance, and on the corner of Matua Rd. They hope neighbours will take notice of the comings and goings around the neighbourhood and report any suspicious behaviour.

Police are working through a number of leads on these crimes but Matt cannot reiterate enough the importance of locking cars at all times. City councillors spent two hours learning first hand that just because a toilet has a wheelchair sticker, doesn’t mean it can easily be used by the disabled.

For someone in a wheelchair, the pay and display parking machine outside the library is out of reach, councillor Catherine Stewart discovered. Councillor Bill Grainger found that a powered wheelchair cannot use it because the concrete surround is poorly designed. Councillor Larry Baldock discovered the toilet’s air dryer doesn’t work well from a chair.

have impairments. Disability is the process that happens when one group of people create barriers by designing a world for only their way of living – and taking no account of the impairments other people have.

The councillors choked when it came to spending money. Implementing the policy is estimated to cost $100,000, most of which will be spent on staff training.

Councillor Rick Curach pointed out most of the difficulties encountered were design issues created by council contractors, which could be remedied by council staff taking a little more trouble to solve.

The committee approved the policy’s vision and goals and it will be released for public consultation, without the financial costs attached.

City’s charity for the charities Tauranga has many responsible corporate citizens – I related a few columns ago about City Partners.

This week, Trustpower, in association with Tauranga City Council, presented its annual Community Awards to Tauranga City volunteer groups. This initiative, unique to Trustpower, is a corporate responsibility with its sleeves rolled up.

It’s a programme designed to recognise the worth of voluntary groups to their communities – some 25 areas around New Zealand. Unless you are involved with the

various groups or are a participant of their services, then it is likely you would be unaware of the invaluable contribution these selfless people and their organisations make to your community’s wellbeing. There were 72 groups nominated locally, covering a wide spectrum of activities. It is extremely difficult selecting a winner – I mean every entrant makes a great case – and this year the overall winner is the Tauranga Men’s Shed at the Historic Village.

The Men’s Shed is an extremely well equipped workshop – all machinery is donated by community members who no longer have use for it. It’s for men over 65 who want to contribute back to their community.

No one gets paid – I mean no one – it has no administration costs – and the work they do is building, repairing and maintenance for all manner of other charities. The workshop has been turned from an un-used storage shed into a spotless workplace. Their commercial rent, insurances, phone, electricity, and water, for example, are paid by donations. The camaraderie among the 20 or so volunteers is key to productivity and success. Volunteers are welcome, so if you are kicking your heels in retirement and looking for something meaningful and worthwhile to do, pop down and have a look at the set up. Dave Harper will be only too happy to show you around.

Projects and monitoring

At the Projects and Monitoring committee, elected members heard one side of an unfortunate spat between tenants of the Cargo Shed down, in Dive Crescent, and Creative Tauranga. Council leases the Cargo Shed to Creative Tauranga who sub-lease to individual stall holders. I’m not getting into the details as it’s really none of our business and the stall holders are asking for their leases to be continued directly with council when their Creative Tauranga -lease expires on June 30. Heaven sent for the daily media, chairman David Stewart said public spats like this do no one

any good and elected members requested staff facilitate a meeting between the combatants.

Another presentation was received from Buddy Mikaere who is setting up the Battle of Gate Pa 150 year commemoration next year. At annual plan submission, they asked for about $160,000 which will be considered at deliberations next month. Buddy told us of one problem he had in getting one of the cannons into a bank for display. They aren’t keen on firearms apparently.

Security concern

Security is apparently a concern for a cannon that weighs a couple of tonnes, Buddy told us.

In a lighter moment, Terry Molloy noted that it might only be a problem if like – a council meeting – it fired smoke and mirrors.

There was another upfront informative update of progress on the Rena wreck. Maritime NZ said it had cost insurers and owners about $300 million so far. It’s a mess, would be my take on it, with the likelihood that the large stern section and associated container wreckage probably will be left on the side of Astrolabe reef. Clearly insurers and owners want to put a limit on their liability and responsibility, leaving it for future generations.

It’s interesting how the openness of their disclosures takes all the heat out of the situation – you can almost sympathise with them. I said almost!

There’s more on submissions to the annual plan. Former Baycourt manager Dale Henderson came along with Baycourt user group representatives to submit on what Dale speculated might be happening at Baycourt in regard to usage, availability and fees. Nothing has been discussed at council so it’s all speculation but Mayor Stuart Crosby did tell the submitter that any problems had been exacerbated because council’s policy on community usage may not have been strictly implemented in the past.

Omanu Golf Club is seeking an upgrade of the storm water drain running through the middle of their course. They aren’t allowed to

do it themselves because of spraying restrictions. Remember the good old days when you were allowed to help yourself?

A smaller representation of nay sayers presented this year. While I’m the first to agree that council isn’t perfect, and is wanting in various areas, I also note that it’s a vast improvement from yester-year. It was surprising that one of these people was unaware of some basic facts which Mayor Stuart Crosby alerted him to. For instance, loan repayments.

Council repays loans – mostly over 25 years – and collect these repayments into a “sinking fund” which forms part of council’s internal cash bank.

There is more heartbreak from people suffering from repeated flooding and threat of flooding. I have people phoning when it’s threatening rain now. I can only imagine what it must be like watching the weather forecasts. With insurance companies upping your excess to make flooding cover irrelevant. A theme from those flood victims is that elected members should re-prioritise expenditure – a theme I agree with. However, once the funds are allocated it takes time to get the work done.

Some elected members, including myself, experienced first-hand using a wheelchair in a disability/wheelchair exercise as a prelude to a City Disability Strategy. Just a slight sideways slope on the footpath becomes an obstacle to a wheelchair. Spring loaded rams on toilet doors make them difficult to open. Uneven concrete aprons mean that both wheels can’t touch the ground. ATM machines that are too high mean you can’t see the screen. Counters at Baycourt are too high to see over. And I never knew Wharf St was so steep. I got about halfway up under my own steam. Council will form a disability group forum like the Elders Forum to develop a sensible, practical way forward.

Rock and roll dreaming Aspiring rockstars across the Western Bay take to Baycourt’s stage this Sunday with dreams of adding their name to a list including Bic Runga, Evermore and Kimbra.

Among the 18 bands and solo acts competing for a top place at the annual Smokefree Rockquest is Mount Maunganui College group Rhythms of the Restless – entering for the first time. Drummer Jordan Kell says the band’s three members put all their spare time into rehearsing the past three weeks.

“We’ve been working hard on our song so we can give it our best,” says Jordan, 17, who along with guitarist Eli Gordon, 16, and guitarist/lead vocalist Saskia van der Heide, 16, will be departing from the band’s normal punkcore style for the more “mellow acoustic” sound of their chosen song.

“It’s a good song and with the chance to do only one song in the heats it made sense,” says Jordan.

Town meets country at Bethlehem Primary School next weekend when the traditional Gala Day and Cow Dump fundraiser returns.

But this year may call for a fresh strategy when picking the winning dump spot. PTA chairwoman Jo West says Cameo, the cow that has traditionally served at the annual cow dump, has been replaced by a younger cow so it might add to the challenge.

“It will be the cow’s first year so who knows, it could make quite a difference,” says Jo. But she is certain the event, which is fundraising to pay for swimming pool heating, will make a “huge” difference to the pool’s comfort for learner swimmers.

The winner who correctly picks where the cow is going to dump wins $2000.

The event on Sunday, May 25 from 11am-2pm will offer standard gala attractions including silent auctions, white elephant, food stalls and carnival rides.

AIMing for new record of registrations Record numbers are expected at the NZCT AIMS Games in September, with registrations (closing on Wednesday) – well up on last year.

No Cameo appearance

Tournament director Vicki Semple says the national intermediate age sports competition had 73 schools registered on Wednesday this week, compared with 43 a week ahead of closing last year. He is expecting a last minute flurry.

“That includes 22 new schools including a lot more from the South Island. We don’t know exactly how many we will have until registrations close, buts I’d definitely say that we will have another record.”

Last year the Western Bay tournament attracted more than 6000 students from 166 schools.

Vicki is also excited about a growing international interest, with five Australian schools confirmed. Last year two schools from Melbourne took part in the first year of international competition.

Vicki says a promotional trip to Japan and Taiwan had attracted strong interest in the tournament, but he isn’t expecting any Asian schools this year.

The same 16 sports codes are being offered this year as in 2012, with limited field capacity restricting teams that can play in the hockey and football competitions.

Vicki says an upper limit had not been set on numbers, and accommodation was being boosted with some schools billeting students and extra caravans brought into the Mount Maunganui Camp ground. The tenth tournament will run

Tauranga Eastern Link TEL on track thanks to great weather Due to a long and dry summer the TEL 2012/2013 construction season has been a success, enabling the project to meet a number of significant milestones. Progress to date includes:

There are seven bridges on the TEL and construction is underway on six.

Three bridges are set to be completed by the end of 2013, they are:

Rail bridge At the Paengaroa end of the project, construction of the rail bridge started in April 2012. The next milestone will be in June as the first beams are lifted into place. The rail bridge is the widest bridge on the project at 84 metres. It is due to be finished prior to Christmas.

Maketu Road bridge Construction started back in April 2012 with a finish date of October 2013. The piling is now completed and construction of the abutments underway. The next milestone will be in July when the beams will be lifted into place.

Changes ahead for drivers By the end of winter 2013 traffic switches will have taken place at Te Maunga and the Domain Road roundabout to allow construction in these areas to progress.

Domain Road To allow for ground preparation work to take place on the existing highway the northbound slip lane (which was closed to traffic in July 2011) will reopen. Traffic will also be moved onto a temporary roundabout which is being built at the SH2/Domain Road intersection.

Complete upgrade powering population growth A two-year project to upgrade Transpower’s Kaitimako substation has just been completed, increasing the Welcome Bay facility’s network capacity by 66 per cent.

Transpower spokeswoman Rebecca Wilson says the upgrade was not prompted by any problems but is to future proof the network

for population growth.

Rebecca says with the Western Bay’s population expected to grow by more than 30 per cent in the next 20 years, the upgrade should support electricity needs “well into the 2020s”.

the project was delivered ahead of schedule and under budget.

He says this is a tribute to those involved.

Growing business opportunities in the Bay Priority One’s campaign to attract businesses and jobs to Tauranga has just achieved another success, with Australian-based manufacturer FSP holdings setting up in Tauriko.

CEO Andrew Coker says FSP’s plan, to set up a plant to manufacture plastic lockers and cabinets for export, was the latest success in its Tauranga Business Case campaign – which 18 months after launching is exceeding expectations.

Creating jobs

FSP’s announcement follows a decision by international labelling company Jenkins Group to transfer its manufacturing from Auckland to a purpose-built 2000m2 factory in Tauriko, which will create 40 new jobs.

Twenty new jobs will be created when FSP launches in four months, and Andrew says potentially another 190 jobs will be created at the 25 businesses that

are setting up or expanding operations in the Western Bay. "This includes manufacturing operations establishing here, and others expanding on existing domestic or international business.

“It adds up to about 250 jobs across all those businesses potentially.”

Above average

In the aftermath of job losses from Psa in the kiwifruit sector, and the global financial crisis, he says the jobs being created by attracting business to the region is one of the most important aspects of the campaign.

The Regional Economic Activity report released last week shows the Bay of Plenty’s unemployment rate of 7.5 per cent is above the 6.9 per cent national average.

Andrew says businesses are being targeted in New Zealand and Australia’s eastern seaboard, including two Australian businesses they are in discussions with – a fish-based food processing operation and a manufacturing and design-based

business. He says it is too early to say how likely these discussions are to proceed, but stresses Tauranga’s competitive advantage with the port, competitive industrial land prices, wage rates, skilled staff and access to the Australian market through CER are attracting interest.

“Essentially what we are doing is communicating the advantages that have been delivered by massive investments by our councils and by the business community, the port for example, with their expansions and commitment to the future.

Innovating business culture Beyond logs, kiwifruit and fertilizer – a group of Western Bay businesspeople have plans to add innovation to the region’s reputation.

Jo has been blown away by the diversity and determination of fellow local entrepreneurs since joining Ignition last year, and she says there are world-class ideas being created all around us.

The group, of self-employed professionals, has launched a survey to learn what city businesses believe is needed to foster innovation in the region.

“The Bay of Plenty Innovation Survey aims to collect data about the level of ambition and entrepreneurial activity of people here in the Bay. It’s a way to reach out to entrepreneurs and find out what they need to develop their business ideas.”

Goodness Highway plans to be formalised Plans for a tourism highway, to boost visitors to coastal Bay of Plenty, are expected to be formalised this month.

The Goodness Highway, which is being pushed by the Te Puke Economic Development Group, aims to attract more free and independent travellers to the region on the route from Waihi to Whakatane.

The Whakatane meeting on Tuesday, May 21 aims to establish a management structure to run the tourism

cluster, involving businesses in the Waihi Beach, Katikati, Te Puke and Whakatane areas. The meeting will also cover the business plan, how it will be funded; and sales and marketing strategies.

Te Puke group general manager Mark Boyle says the Goodness Highway will offer an interesting alternative coastal route between Auckland and Rotorua.

He hopes it will attract more visitors to the region

by August when the route from Waihi to Whakatane should be rebranded.

He said a meeting last month had shown good support from businesses and tourism operators across the length of the route. It has been named the Goodness Highway to recognise the area as a centre that offers top quality, healthy produce.

The meeting is at Mataatua Te Manuka Tutahi, 105 Murawai Drive, Whakatane, at 5pm on May 21.

Screen printer named year’s top talent Despite leaving school at 15 years old, screen printer Regan Quaife has taken out the print industry’s top training award – Apprentice of the Year.

The 25-year-old was named the 2012 print industry Apprentice of the Year at the prestigious Pride In Print Awards at ASB Arena on May 3.

“If only my third form teacher could see me now,” says Regan.

The awards, sponsored by ICON Digital Printing Papers, celebrate the best print work in New Zealand and the industry’s top apprentices.

After leaving school early, Regan completed an auto services course where his tutor noticed his artistic skills and helped him land his first job as a t-shirt printer and sign writer.

“The apprenticeship has benefited me hugely, from my work ethic and skills, right through to my reading, writing and spelling skills. I am a lot more confident in my work and I’ve taken charge of the printing area in my workplace, which has resulted in me being promoted to production manager.”

Regan completed his screen printing apprenticeship at Commercial Signs Print and Promotions in Tauranga last year. He was one of five finalists from a range of businesses vying for the top training award.

While a lot of Kiwis have traditionally toughed it out over winter, the Government-run Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority is reminding people that a chilly home puts you at a greater risk of colds, flu and asthma when temperatures fall below 16 C. EECA senior technical advisor Christian Hoerning says people often keep heaters off to save money, but warming your home did not need to cost a lot.

“Warming up your house may be easier than you think. There are simple, low-cost changes that will make a difference, as well as investments to give you long-term benefits.”

Insulation slows heat loss from, making it easier to warm your home by helping hold heat for longer.

Installing ceiling and underfloor insulation is usually straightforward and very effective. If your house is not insulated, or has old insulation that is probably not performing well, good quality, well-installed underfloor and ceiling insulation could halve your house’s heat loss.

National plan to tackle vine disease welcomed A national management plan for dealing with kiwifruit vine disease Psa-V – announced this week by the Government – is being welcomed by New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers Incorporated.

Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy announced today the National Psa-V Pest Management Plan has been formally approved by the Government.

The plan includes introducing a levy rate on exported kiwifruit to help cover disease management, monitoring, plant material movement and dealing with unmanaged and abandoned orchards.

The levy - voted on by growers - will have a shortfall until yields return to pre-Psa levels. As result, Cabinet has agreed that $3.5million, remaining from initial Government funding for Psa-V of $25million, will be passed to Kiwifruit Vine Health (KVH) to implement the plan.

“This plan means that the primary responsibility for managing Psa-V is now moving to the industry themselves, as they are best placed to co-ordinate and lead the response,” says the Minister.

“As part of this, the Government has approved a levy rate on exported kiwifruit equating to one cent per tray for green fruit and two cents a tray for gold fruit.”

NZKGI president Neil Trebilco says the NPMP is a vital tool for the industry to help reduce the

impacts of Psa-V and manage orchards in a Psa-V environment.

“As an industry, we have had to accept that Psa-V is here to stay.

As a result, we have had to change the way we manage our orchards and for most growers, this has meant extra work on the orchard and extra financial challenges,” says Neil.

“The NPMP is a key component to the on-going survival of kiwifruit orchards and the kiwifruit industry. We need to work together to keep inoculum levels low.

“An important part of achieving this is to effectively manage abandoned and unmanaged orchards.

“These are a real concern for some growers, causing unnecessary risks to successfully producing orchards.”

Neil says until now, the success of managing Psa-V, and keeping inoculum levels low, has relied on growers and the industry voluntarily applying best practice activities, with varied degrees of success.

“Kiwifruit Vine Health can now deliver a very high standard of Psa-V control and management.

“It also means as an industry, we can continue to upgrade our focus on other biosecurity risks facing the

kiwifruit industry,” says Neil.

Minister Guy says the levy to be introduced has been voted on by growers and with the shortfall predicted – the $3.5 million, remaining from the Government’s initial $25 million funding pool, it will help to introduce the new plan.

“Since the discovery of Psa-V in Te Puke in late 2010 there has been a very effective partnership between the Government and the industry on disease management.

“The Government has provided $25million, matched dollar for dollar by industry, to help fight the disease. The industry body charged with managing Psa-V, Kiwifruit Vine Health (KVH), has done a great job in consulting with growers throughout New Zealand and developing the proposal for this plan.

“It has been pleasing to see a high-level of support from growers to establishing the plan,” says the Minister.

He says despite moving the management of Psa-V to industry, the Government still has a strong interest in the recovery of the kiwifruit industry.

Autumn’s best kept secret The stunning vista and fantastic autumn colours at McLarens Falls Park are what make the area such a popular destination in the weekend.

The Tauranga disc golf association have been playing an annual tournament ‘The Extreme’ up near the equestrian centre for the past 15 years. Having only recently returned to McLarens Falls Park last weekend after a six year absence, I noticed a lot of changes, updated amenities and a vast number of visitors enjoying the bush walks and various picnic

spots. The last time I played, I can recall gathering a large bag of quinces from a tree on the course.

Because the park is so popular these days, the course has changed to avoid parked cars and picnic spots but I still managed to track down the same old gnarly tree – on the verge of losing its precious fruit.

Other hunter gatherers were foraging nearby for some fascinating fungi, but I let them have their own investigative mycology

as I was happy with my haul of beautiful ripe quince.

That was because I wanted to create the wonderful membrillo, which is itself the colour of autumn.

The reduced pulp of the stewed fruit is astonishing with any cheese and keeps really well.

Hats off to the Tauranga District Council for the wonderful and popular McLaren Falls Park: a true paradise. Oh…and thanks for the quince!

Caution for multi-purpose ladders The Commerce Commission has urged consumers and tradespeople to exercise caution when using two models of ‘Transforma’ multi-purpose ladder, sold nationwide by Brand Developers Limited between 2007 and March 2013.

The Commission is investigating potential breaches of the Fair Trading Act involving claims made about the load rating of Transforma TR24 and TR33(35) ladders and their compli-

ance with compulsory safety standards.

The Commission says approximately 16,000 of these multi-purpose ladders have been sold, mainly through TV infomercials and trade suppliers.

The Commission had so far only tested one of each model of ladder, both ladders had failed the independent safety test and the test failures were of sufficient concern for the Commission to warn people to take care in using them.

JAMS PRESERVES AND SPREADS

Membrillo Ingredients 3kg ripe quince: washed, peeled, cored and chopped 1 split vanilla pod Rind of two lemons ¼ cup lemon juice 4 cups white sugar: the exact amount will be determined during cooking Method Place the quinces in a large sauce pan and cover with water.

Add vanilla pod and lemon peel and bring to the boil.

Reduce to a simmer, cover and cook for about 30 minutes until the quinces are soft. Strain the water, remove the vanilla pod and blend to a pulp. Measure out the pulp if you have four cups, then add four cups of sugar to whatever you end up with, use equal amounts of sugar. Return to pot and stir

until the sugar is dissolved then simmer for about 1.5hours, taking care to avoid mud pool-like splashes when giving the mixture an occasional stir.

The mixture will thicken and change colour like the leaves in autumn to a brown, gold, dark orange.

If you find the mixture hasn’t changed colour try microwaving some in a dish.

If you get a darker colour without burning, microwave the rest in small bursts for

about 20 minutes total. when you purchase Transfer the paste while it’s with QCard* still hot to a baking tray lined with buttered, greaseproof paper. Spread out the paste on tray and bake at 125 degrees Celsius for an hour.

Allow to cool then cut and store in containers in the fridge for up to a year.

Tauranga Men’s Shed is supreme at community awards Knocking off 71 groups vying for the title – Tauranga Men’s Shed has won the TrustPower Tauranga Community supreme award for keeping our older male population from staying idle.

Announced Monday night at ASB Arena Baypark, the men’s shed receives $1500 prize money, a framed certificate – and an opportunity to represent Tauranga City at 2013’s TrustPower National Community Awards at Invercargill in March.

With the city having the country’s highest proportion of men aged 60-plus, the men’s shed offers a solution for a growing Tauranga problem – what to do with retired men.

Based at the Historic Village, the shed is run by 26 volunteers who collectively work more than 400 each week to provide a place where men of all abilities can get involved. It opens Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm and most Saturdays.

TrustPower spokesperson Teresa Partridge says many men have moved to Tauranga in retirement, leaving behind their sheds and home workshops.

Dave Holder chasing Northland exposure After surprising a lot of people as a rookie driver at the Whangarei Rally last year, Dave Holder hopes he and his rookie co-driver Josh Theobald will do the same again this weekend.

Reece’s wish for weekend prime conditions

After difficult, slippery conditions at last weekend’s Waimiha round of the Yamaha Enduro Championships, Tauranga long distance dirt rider Reece Burgess expects conditions to suit him better in Tokoroa this weekend.

While Reece said the fivehour long Enduro in the King Country wasn’t a lot of fun to ride – with a wet, narrow track requiring focussed riding – he was reasonably happy with his result. Reece rose to second place in his over-300cc four-stroke class at the half-way point in the eight stage series and placed Tauranga’s Reece Burgess (KTM fourth overall.

Reece expects the open-riding format of the two-hour Dirt Guide Cross-country Series event at Tar Hill in Tokoroa this weekend will suit him a lot better. He is aiming to move up the podium from the third place, he achieved at the first event in the three-round series held at Ohakuri in April.

“I should be able to get second after this weekend – but anything can happen, I could end up buried – but I don’t plan on doing too badly.”

The seasoned rider describes his riding strategy as similar to a tortoise, taking minimal risks with a steady pace.

“I can go faster but I know what happens when you do, so I choose not to – even if the option is there you need to weigh up what it’s worth to you and your body.”

He says the “authority” of the 450cc KTM 450EXC, with its extra weight and power “teaches you a lesson pretty fast if you’re reckless”.

Drift driver turns winning sights to China A season of mixed results for Tauranga drift driver Cole Armstrong is now a distant memory as he turns his focus to competing in China this weekend.

Cole, who only two months ago pulled out of the Easter meeting in

Christchurch after he’d fallen out of contention with poor results, flew out on Tuesday for round one of the World Drift Series in Tanjin.

The 26-year-old’s selection for the New Zealand team follows his impressive debut at the World Series event in China and Japan last year – and his temporary shift to Perth two months ago for a wellpaid engineering job to fund car improvements.

Cole is driving by himself in China, with his two team mates’ cars hit by mechanical failures.

But they will join him in the next round of the series in China in September, before the finals in October-November. The team is also awaiting confirmation to compete at the Formula Drift Asian Series in Kuala Lumpur (June 29) and Jakarta (November 16).

he was “very excited about returning” to compete against top professional drivers, after having an eye-opening and inspiring experience at the event last year, rubbing shoulders with top international drifters.

Destroyed classrooms replaced Classrooms to replace those destroyed by fire at Kaka Street Special School last month arrived at Tauranga Intermediate School this week.

Kaka Street Special School principal Barrie Wickens welcomed the replacement classrooms on Monday afternoon and says they will house 11 students with special needs and six staff.

“It’s a classroom and an office block and they are going to be joined together in an L-shape.”

The old detachable

double classroom suffered extensive fire, smoke and water damage due to a fire believed to be caused by an electrical fault in a fan on April 14.

About $60,000 of teaching resources was also destroyed.

The students have been learning in Tauranga Intermediate’s staffroom and a nearby house.

“We split them into two groups and they have been there for a fortnight,” says Barrie.

Barrie is unsure of the classrooms’ cost as the contract was put out to tender by the Ministry of Education, which is picking up the bill for the rooms.

Sugar-free treats are still ‘oh so sweet’ Today’s children are faced with a cocktail of allergies and viruses. Surely in this day and age one would think they would have the ability to fight these little monsters.

As result, making sure things are clean and sterilised for toddlers is one of the steps taken at Kidiwise once a week. This, however, does not get to the root of the problem.

The problem, or challenge, is to build up children’s immunity.

Before we had big factories manufacturing a multitude of sugary sweet treats and preservative-rich packaged food, our children were fed fresh meat, vegetables and fruit.

Father’s striking success on the international stage Taekwondo specialist Jason Whitcombe will have his dream turn into reality as he takes centre stage at the WTF World Para Taekwondo Championships next month.

What began as a father and son exercise is blossoming into a techniquebased skill for the 42-year-old as he prepares for the day-long championships in Lausanne, Switzerland on June 8.

But what is most inspiring is Jason, training at the Western Bay Olympic

Taekwondo Club, has climbed the ranks within the sport to currently hold a red belt – one below black belt – all with one arm.

Losing his right arm in a motorbike accident 25 years ago, Jason says this is a dream come true for him as he becomes the first Kiwi to compete at the annual event.

“For me this is as big as it gets. This is the highest level you can go as the sport is not at the Paralympics. It’s going to be a great experience for me.

“This is the first tournament where everyone is disabled.”

Trying his hand at the sport two years

ago, along with his son Joshua, 15, Jason says he set his sights on reaching the championships after instructor Garry Carpenter alerted him.

“I began when my son started to live with me during the week. I wanted something we could do together during the week because he spent the weekends with his mum.

“I had been coming along for about six months when Garry said they have a world champs for disabled athletes.”

The championship, open to red and black belts, sees Jason competing in the A5-A6 category – one arm amputated above the elbow or two arms amputated above the elbow – heavy weight division (over 80kg).

“It’s not a big category and there will probably be six to eight of us.

“I’ve got a good chance. If I have a good day I have a chance of coming home with a medal.”

The day-long event will test competitors in an “intense” environment with two preliminary heats ahead of a final bout to find the world champion.

“There are three one-minute rounds with a one-minute break in between. These minute rounds can be quite intense – you need good sharp fitness and recovery, and excellent technique to score on the electronic vests.”

Jason Whitcombe is the first New Zealander to compete at the fourth annual WTF World Para Taekwondo Championships next month.

Greenpark’s cultural taster Greerton will offer a window into the world this Sunday, with tastes and cultural performances from around the globe served up at the Greenpark School’s international gala.

Greenpark School international manager Lynne Mossop, who is organising the event, says it is becoming a highlight on the school calendar with the range of tasty food offered always popular.

“It’s a very family friendly event with something offered for everyone – the food was a major hit last year.”

All money raised at the gala, which runs from 12.30pm -5pm on Sunday, will help senior students take part in an exchange with

its Korean sister school in Seoul.

The gala will include stalls and performances by groups ranging from kapa haka to zumba and Scottish dancing groups, through to choral singers and Brazilian musicians, and school aerobic and cheerleading demonstrations.

International food will range from Mexican to Korean, Indian, American and Italian.

Money raised will help to pay for activities and expenses for 21 Year 5-6 pupils on the exchange with Greenpark’s sister school Hansen Elementary.

Lynne says the exchange, which is the eighth since principal Graeme Lind

established the sister school relationship, on a visit to Korea, taught pupils about cultural diversity.

“They come back with an appreciation of how other people live.

We live in a globalised environment nowadays and it is important that the students have an understanding of how other people live.”

As part of the sister school relationship Greenpark hosts a two-month visit from Hansin school groups every year, and sends a group of Year 5-6 students back once a year.

Art installations sought

The call is going out for light art installation proposals for this year’s IlluminArt festival in July, as part of plans to develop the Greerton event into one of the best light shows.

Greerton Mainstreet manager Victoria Thomas wants to hear from anyone with ideas for illuminated art installations, saying creations by community members will help encourage more community ownership of the event, held for the third time on July 19.

“The more the community gets behind it, the more it becomes their event. We want to hear from anyone who wants to get involved, not just artists.”

Victoria says this year’s event will be the biggest yet, with more art, more fire and more magic than ever before.

“From 6pm on Friday the 19th of July the Greerton Village Square will be transformed into a vibrant display of light forms, celebrating the artistic talents in and around the local community,” she says.

The light festival will include

a “spectacular display of light showcasing the best of fire dance, shadow puppets, lanterns, UV lights and more”.

Victoria says art proposals need to be submitted by July 1, to ensure the best 10 entries are displayed in the limited space available. Successful entries will be announced on July 5, and the winner – who will earn a $1000 prize - will be announced at the free family festival.

Programme prepping students for law

Mother-of-two Ancy Morris is one step closer to realising her dream to become a Police Officer in the NZ Police.

Ancy has just completed her Certificate in Preparation for Law Enforcement with Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and is simply beaming with anticipation.

“I can’t wait to put in my application to Police College,” says Ancy.

While joining the Police may seem like an unusual career choice for a mother of two young children, Ancy says her children are part of her motivation.

“Since having children my priorities have changed

and I’d like to do something to contribute to society.

Also, I don’t like bullies. I have a strong sense of social justice and I would like to do something positive about it.”

Originally from Dubai, Ancy would love to see different ethnicities represented in the Police Force.

“I was born and raised in Dubai, but am of Indian ethnicity. It’d be great to see these ethnicities represented in the Police.”

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic programme coordinator Sam Honey says that the timing couldn’t be better for Ancy with the Police actively recruiting for people of Asian and Polynesian descent.

“New Zealand’s growing diversity has seen the face of policing change – and they’re looking for applicants with an understanding of different languages and cultures,” explains Sam. “Our course is aimed at anyone seriously thinking about joining the Police or other areas of law enforcement.”

Parents deliberately infecting children Infecting children with the chicken pox virus on purpose is not a good idea, says medical officer of health Dr Phil Shoemack.

He says some children can have underlying medical conditions and exposing a child on purpose could lead to serious consequences.

Chicken pox is a viral illness caused by one of the herpes viruses called herpes zoster.

“Virtually every child gets infected with chicken pox in New Zealand one way or another.

“By the time we get to adulthood more than 95 per cent of people have been infected, even if they didn’t know they had been.”

He says while vaccines are not pushed to protect people against the virus, there are N NN N

some exceptional cases.

“If a family member, particularly a child, has some significant immunity issue, for instance a child with leukaemia who is receiving chemotherapy, it is important anyone in the household doesn’t pass on chicken pox.

“Therefore, in order to protect the child with the other illness, other members of the household are normally recommended to be tested for chicken pox and if they don’t have immunity then they should be vaccinated.”

Phil says chicken pox, or any viruses, can be unpredictable.

“Imagine how you would feel if you intentionally exposed your child to an illness,” he says.

“And they got really quite unwell because it does happen.”

Judy’s not quite sure where Expozay fits in the mix now, having just seen swimsuits marketed under the brand in the Ezibuy mail order catalogue; and she does not much care. She’s moved on.

When her two sons were students at university and into snowboarding, she designed clothing for them under a label she named Expo J and got a following among students looking for something innovative. She also designed some ‘celebrity’ tour outfits. She is now focused on redecorating her new Tauranga home.

More than just a gym for women For the women at Curves Tauranga, a visit to the gym is more than a workout.

It’s an opportunity to socialise with like-minded women, to chat with one another about how Curves has changed their bodies and their lives, and to increase their self-esteem.

The gym on Devonport Rd is in a state of change, under the new ownership by long-time member Jennifer Glausiuss – who purchased the gym with the desire to provide a place where women can work out and feel secure.

Hand washing holds the key to prevention Bay of Plenty health officials are urging parents and day cares to step up children’s personal hygiene following an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease in the North Island.

In the past month Tauranga Hospital has treated about 20 children, aged between two and five, suffering from dehydration as a result of the contagious virus.

Media are also reporting Auckland’s Starship Hospital’s emergency department has been treating up to 15 children each week for the past month.

The disease, a contagious virus based in the intestine, is not the same as the

veterinary disease, foot and mouth and is characterised by fluid-like blisters appearing on the hands, feet and inside of the mouth.

It is not considered serious but many children can become dehydrated because the blisters make it painful to drink water.

Bay of Plenty District Health Board paediatrician Doctor Hugh Lees says it contagious, but is considered relatively mild.

“We only see the children who are having difficulty with getting fluids.

“Most children will probably be being seen by a GP.” Health officials are advising children should only be sent home if they are feeling unwell, not because red spots are visible.

HFMD most commonly affects children under the age of 10, particularly preschoolers with outbreaks often occurring in chid-care centres and schools, says Hugh.

The disease is transmitted from person to person by direct contact with the blisters’ fluid or direct contact from secretions from the child’s nose or throat.

Bay of Plenty medical officer of health Doctor Phil Shoemack says with any contagious or viral disease it is important not to let personal hygiene slip.

“It just can’t be over-emphasised the importance of good every good personal hygiene and one of the key things is hand washing.”

Meet the busiest gluten free bakery in town

Providing Katikati residents with a large range of delicious gluten free products is one of the reasons The Busy Baker and Café may be the busiest bakery in town.

The bakery’s owners pride themselves on offering quality products and listening to the wants and needs of their customers.

After months of requests for gluten free food, owner Yvonne Anderson says the bakery is now offering an extensive collection of sweet and savoury gluten free products – including cakes, slices, pies, sausage rolls and now pizza bases.

The bakery also prides itself making all of its products in-house –

something Yvonne says guarantees customers are getting top quality food.

Yvonne’s husband Bruce makes the pastry in store “from scratch”.

“It’s important for us to intricately know what we are selling, this way we can make the best products we can,” says Yvonne.

“We make everything that we sell.”

Customers can also enjoy their gluten free products in the bakery’s cafe or take home an order of frozen bread ready to enjoy later.

Botanic park recipient for market’s 10th birthday The Tauranga Farmers Market is turning 10 and to celebrate they are raffling off eight Main Birthday Market Hampers in support of Sydenham Botanic Park.

Advisory group committee member Lisa Adams says the proceeds will go towards further development of the park.

Frank Sydenham, Massey University’s first horticulture graduate, used the park to teach students how to grow plants.

He left the park to the community in the early 1970s under the condition it was used as a sub-tropical botanic park.

Otumoetai College and Tauranga Boys’ College utilised the property but by 2003, the land was not being used for educational purposes.

In 2006, Tauranga City Council took over and has an agreement with the NZ Guardian Trust that council is responsible for developing the site into a botanic park.

It was resolved community groups or trusts would fund capital development and council would supply the operating costs. Sydenham Botanic Advisory group members have since been working to raise money to make improvements to the park.

Lisa says the public wish to see park benches, picnic tables, more planting, car parking and toilets eventuate, while still keeping some wide open space.

The park boasts what is believed to be the biggest collection of Kauri species in the world.

Raffle tickets cost $2 and are available at the farmers’ market on May 18 and 25. The winner is drawn at the market’s 10th birthday on May 25, at 10.15am.

Sharing furry friends’ fun during newshound recovery Flo is progressing well after another round of surgery, thanks to the excellent care at Mount Vet Hospital.

Jorg and the team at 0800 VETCALL have done a wonderful job of patching up our girl, after she ruptured saliva ducts in her throat, we suspect in a high-speed collision with an immovable object during her bush whacking adventures.

The well-equipped vet ambulance has been quick on the scene to administer first class treatment. I’ve been watching from a safe distance (in case they try any

of those surgery moves on me) and I have to report this is a fantastic service that can treat animals right at your own home.

So the newshounds have been pretty much confined to barracks in recent weeks, while Flo recovers.

Don’t tell her, but I’ve had a few sneaky sessions out with the boss. It isn’t the same without my partner, but hey, someone has to keep the wildlife in check.

Oak grove opens today as foundation turns 10 Today marks the official opening of a commemorative oak grove in Cambridge Park with 20 trees being planted.

Tauranga City Council has designated a portion of Cambridge Park for the oak grove in celebration of the Acorn Foundation’s 10th birthday in the Bay. Foundation operations manager Margot McCool says in the first

10 years they have distributed more than $1.6 million in grants to a wide range of community groups and charities. The official opening is at 11am with family members of the first 20 Acorn Foundation donors planting the trees.

An anniversary lunch at Mills Reed today, attended by MP Simon Bridges and Deputy Mayor David Stewart, will acknowledge the donors who have helped make the foundation possible.

Welcome Bay man behind bars

A Welcome Bay man facing drug charges will remain behind bars until his next court appearance on June 10.

Derek Vince Gibson, 30, is charged with offering to supply the Class A drug methamphetamine and seven counts of the Class C drug cannabis.

Gibson’s alleged offending relates to incidents between February 4 and 6 this year.

Following an investigation into the allegations, police executed a search warrant on Gibson’s Welcome Bay home on March 6.

Brother found guilty

A Tauranga man’s brother has been found guilty of importing pseudoephedrine – the chemical used to manufacture methamphetamine.

Taukau man Brian Read was found guilty by jury on 15 counts of importing the drug, used to make methamphetamine, from Thailand, and participating in an organised criminal group, in the High Court at Rotorua last Wednesday.

His brother, Gary Read, pleaded guilty on Tuesday, May 7, to importing pseudoephedrine and methamphetamine for supply, unlawful possession of a pistol and being part of an organised criminal group.

Brian will be sentenced in the High Court at Auckland on June 17.

Parole denied for Little Willy

A Tauranga man convicted of murdering sex worker Jo-Anne Van Duyvebooden had his parole denied this week.

Former Filthy Few president James Henry Wilson, also known as Little Willy, had his second bid for parole denied in the Parole Board in Wellington yesterday.

The 41-year-old is serving a life sentence after being found guilty in 2000 of murdering his ex-girlfriend. The 32-year-old woman was found shot dead in a stream near her Welcome Bay home in 1999.

Runaway millionaire to appeal

A Bay of Plenty man, dubbed the ‘runaway millionaire’ after he fled the country with millions of dollars, is appealing his sentence at the Court of Appeal in Auckland.

Former Rotorua petrol station owner Leo Gao was sentenced to four years and seven months’ jail after pleading guilty to seven charges of theft in June, 2012.

The 32-year-old fled the country with $6.7million after Westpac Bank mistakenly loaded a $10million overdraft into his account in 2009.

Coroner condemns bed sharing

A Bay of Plenty Coroner is urging parents to stop sleeping with babies in their beds following the death of a Tauranga two-month-old.

Dr Wallace Bain made the plea in Tauranga on Tuesday during an inquest into the death of the child, who likely suffocated after slipping from a pillow.

The inquest heard how the child was placed in the bed with the parents despite being able to sleep alone.

The cause of death was ruled as asphyxia, which may have happened when the child slipped from its pillow and its face ended up covered by soft bedding.

Team wins national champs

Tauranga Police dog Turk and his handler Senior Constable Derek Orchard are the national police patrol dog champions.

The pair won the Frank Riley Cup at the New Zealand Police Patrol and Detector Dog Championships in Trentham on Wednesday.

Both Derek and Turk have many years of experience behind them but have only been working together as a team for the past 12 months.

Derek says he is well aware of the necessity for dog and handler to build unique bond of trust and skill.

Elderly driver left shaken

An elderly Tauranga driver was left shaken following a two car crash on 17th Avenue on Thursday morning.

Emergency services were called to the crash at the intersection of Devonport Road around 8.50am where an 85-year-old Tauranga woman, driving a Toyota, was hit by a Honda Torneo.

Tauranga Police say it is a simple case of the Honda failing to give way.

St John checked the women for injuries but no one was taken to Tauranga Hospital.

Dear Bill English: About this GST Letter to The Hon Bill English, Minister of Finance: Dear Bill, I want to raise an issue with you which I think is worthy of research.

We are a Western Democratic Society here in New Zealand; and also have a property owning philosophy as a nation, where the majority of us want to own our own homes. I find it unacceptable that as government complains about Local Government holding costs, it is in the same breathe passing on greater costs from which we have no alternative but to accept. Nowhere is this more relevant and glaring than in GST on Rates. As the GST is now a 15% tax on the total rate bill, it can be a significant amount of money.

Please explain to me and the general public as to why this is allowed. I know successive governments have just accepted the rule, but I repeat at 15%, it is a considerable amount of money for absolutely no benefit to the ratepayer home owner.

Worse still, the people on superannuation, wage and salary earners pay income taxes, and they do not pay GST on that income tax, so why should they have to pay a further tax to government on their property rates, with their after taxed income. Businesses and farmers

can tax deduct their rates and it seems to me there must be an answer. The government takes the money, and lets Local government take the flack, when your GST is just a tax with no details as to where the money goes and what special services will be received for that payment, which is what local government has to do. It seems to me it is not a level playing field, and Central government should be accountable to.

I do implore you to do some research on this subject because I for one am looking for answers, and as we in Local government try to hold our costs, Government must play its part also. I admit I am no taxation expert, but it just does not make sense to me.

Great response from the council

On Friday 10 May my neighbour across the road informed me that some dick head had tagged our new brick fence the previous night, which is more than 20ft across our lawn from the footpath, with a Nazi Swastika, just as well I’m not Jewish. I called Tauranga City Council, within the hour a chap arrived with solvents and water, dealt with the offending logo, he was unable to remove it altogether but with a phone call to an associate with a water blaster which finished the job. ell done and thank you Ari @ TCC for your prompt and efficient response in restoring our patio wall to its pristine condition, you and your men where excellent to deal with.

The Cargo Shed Here we go again. Tracey has a whim and we are all supposed to jump!

I think this is the fourth time we have had to shift out.

Creative Tauranga had a meeting in January and we the quay holders got a letter on April 20th to say we must vacate the Cargo Shed on May 31 with no reason why.

On Friday May 3 a board member told us Tracey wanted to revamp the Shed.

It had already been revamped after the two ends of the building were removed and we moved back in September 2012.

Now Tracey wants designer clothes and shoes to take our place.

We have worked so hard to get the Cargo Shed up and running and the tour buses to stop with cruise ship passengers. This past year has been a good one.

Can you imagine middle aged cruise ship passengers wanting designer shoes and garments? I don’t think so.

We all made sure each quay holders wares were all made here in Tauranga and our visitor book shows some very nice remarks and congratulating our Council for giving us a wonderful shed.

Licence to abort

Family Planning has a licence for its Tauranga branch to conduct abortions using the French drug mifepristone (also called RU486). This drug, together with a prostaglandin (PG), prevents adherence to the womb lining, starves the tiny human being to death, and triggers a chemically-induced abortion - if all goes well.

This drug is subject to heavy warnings, and at last worldwide count has caused the death of 25 women, 9 in the United States and 16 in other countries including one in Australia. (See “AbortionPillRisks.org”) Dr. Renate Klein is pro-abortion, but an outspoken opponent of RU486. She co-authored “RU486: Myths and Morals” and believes the abortion pills too dangerous to women, particularly in rural areas, distant from hospitals and doctors. She says that using RU486/ PG “..women undergo a long and cruel punishment for their decision to terminate their babies, often with severe bleeding, nausea and acute pain.”

Australian figures for 2012 revealed that since restricted approval in 2006 for RU486/PG, 599 women required surgeries to remove poisoned embryos after incomplete miscarriages, and 832 reported “adverse events” resulting in hospitalisation or further treatment.

Do we really need this industry and its casualty rate growing bigger here in Tauranga?

Lacking procreative potential The term ‘marriage’, which always had a clear meaning, has now a double meaning. Since April 17 we have two kinds of marriage.

Same sex marriages enjoy the same legal status as traditional marriages. In actual reality, however, the difference could not be greater.

I have thought of suitable terms which accurately convey the true nature of the difference.

Traditional marriages could be called ppp marriages, and same sex marriages lpp marriages – ppp denoting: possessing procreative potential, and lpp: lacking procreative potential. Or p and l marriages for short.

The terms are matter of fact, to the point, completely rainbow-free.

Dishonest climate argument Don Barnes, in his letter [Sun May 10] critising Rogers Rabbit’s article on climate change, is a classic example of arguing from a position of professed superiority. This is essentially dishonest. Furthermore, nowhere in Don Barnes’ letter does he present any specific facts rebutting Roger’s claims.

Perhaps Don Barnes failed to notice in his many folders on climate change, the page with information on the ability of specific atmospheric gases to absorb and re-emit specific wave-bands of electromagnetic radiation. Or the page relating to the short time since we have had temperature scales, and particularly the very short time since we had instruments that can measure temperatures to one tenth of a degree Celsius to an accuracy of five hundredths of a degree.

Nothing in Treaty confers special rights As a co-author of “Twisting the Treaty”, I reply to Aaron Authier’s letter to you. If he has read the book, his misunderstanding is grotesque.

It is he and his like, not ourselves, who are the neo-Nazis in this country with their claims of special racist rights, lies about the Treaty of Waitangi and suchlike – big lies in the true Nazi style.

We stand for equality for all citizens, regardless of race, and taxpayer support on the basis of need, not greed – true democracy.

It was not Hone Heke, as he says, who said in signing the Treaty at Waitangi “We are one people now” but Hobson, who said it to every chief as he signed.

It is nonsense to pretend that this implies Crown/Maori “partnership”, a fantasy initiated by that learned but foolish judge, Robin Cooke, who exceeded his brief in doing so. There is nothing, simply

There is no doubt that the British shot themselves and their descendants in the foot when they proposed and entered a treaty with the Maori people. Under every just law known to mankind, that can never be changed. Maori are being compensated for the unlawful confiscation of their land and property, end of story.

How ironic it is that the people complaining today are the descendants of those who so callously denied Maori their just rights so long ago. With no thought of the misery they caused. Ah! Sweet irony.

Meanwhile blaming the Government for “making me?” So tell us in plain English Mayor Crosby, what are TCC obligations under current statutory requirements to appease and pander to local Maori interests?

As a starting point, perhaps Mayor Crosby might like to give us the reasons and authority for the following recent accommodations with iwi in the past year: • Representative on TCC General Managers’ staff selection vetting panel.

• Committee Representatives(50%) to determine TCC Coastal Reserves Policy • Otumoetai Pa site purchase price $1.8m and development costs around $180,000 effectively converted into a Maori reserve.

• Tauranga Moana relocating Wharewaka onto new Tauranga Harbour pier costing around $1m, and $60,000 handout for management fees 2012/13 • Disproportionate representation on Tauranga Moana Museum(Cliff Road) Trust.

• IWI involvement with proposed new Tauranga University.

• CBD Hotel Conference Centre - special deals offered to Maori interests.

• Mount Cultural Centre support for this opportunistic concept.

Things to divert voters’ attention Another year looking at the TCC Draft Annual Plan and submissions they certainly have highs and lows, the high being that everyone can have everything they want this year as there was a $3.2m surplus and as all good Pollies do in election year they spend it.

In past years elected councillors had a propensity to be able to place something on the table to divert attention of the voters off the real issues and send them all off sideways somewhere else, In 2007 the “Museum on the Water” likely to cost $60m was well and truly sunk at the polls that year, some ex Councillors possibly regret the stance and correctly remain in exile, 2010 saw the Libraries hit the front page and created a bit of emotion around the place.

So what will it be in 2013?, looks set to be boring, bland and dull ... but a glow on the horizon appears, a NEW “five word branding of Tauranga” contest by Brian@the sun. I think the winner was printed last week “Okay now Hayden has gone” but I prefer “Tell the Mayor, Hayden’s back!” has a lot more interesting connotations to it.

Certainly far more interesting for voters and there will be no salaries to pay.

The rebuild of the Hospital in recent years is something to be proud of except for one sow’s ear - the Pathlab Building. In particular its “Super Six” white asbestos roof - what an embarrassment!

Now some will say that if asbestos is undisturbed it is safe, except this is a hospital that will have treated patients for asbestosis - not a good look! The questions are: Is this roof that is exposed to the elements undisturbed? In the equinox gusts that can be 70kph plus, what is the effect of high salt laden and grit winds having on the asbestos containing roof? Is there a sandblast type effect? Does anyone know? Has there ever been air samples taken above the roof on gusty days? Has a micronometre measurement been taken of the crumbly substrate to assess if the material has thinned over time during its 50 odd year history?

As the term of the current Health Board is nearing an end, what plans have they initiated during their tenure for this roof to be replaced?

I’d like to hear from the Chair and please don’t tell us it’s safe if there is no regular monitoring and reporting system in place for this identifiable hazard risk. Would the Medical Officer of Health be happy to have a white asbestos roof on his home roof? - For a roof at a hospital in 2013 that fronts a street, this is disgraceful.

Wildlife centre’s appeal to fishermen

ARRC Wildlife Centre co-ordinator Sue Mackey releases a healed shag.

ARRC Wildlife Centre is appealing to Western Bay fishermen to take responsible care of their fishing gear.

The centre sees many birds and animals severely injured by fishing tackle that need to be euthanased.

Shags with leg and wing injuries, or poisoning, are also common.

tunately ARRC often has to provide medical care for these beautiful birds when they have fishing line wrapped around their wings, occasionally with heavy sinkers attached and hooks that are either embedded in their flesh or have been swallowed.

“ARRC would like to appeal to all fishermen to please look after their fishing gear making sure that they do not leave it unattended and dispose of unwanted fishing tackle responsibly.”

The change of seasons has seen things quieten down a bit. Last week was ok, but no bookings, until the weekend when we had to cancel due a strong S.E that blew in Friday night. It was gone a bit quicker than forecast, and by Sunday afternoon was good. It’s been a bit frustrating as the forecasting seems to have taken a nosedive over the last few months, in particular the extended (four day) forecast, whether good or bad, being well out when the time comes around. Frankly, no forecast is better than bad ones. Doubly annoying when it’s one thing at night, quite different the next morning.

Nowcasts we can get by looking out the window, so hopefully it’s just a temporary glitch in the Metservice radar.

He is most likely suffering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is the Master, the head of a Scientology-like sect. They meet and are oddly drawn to each other, two sides of a coin, one seemingly intellectual and controlled, the other rough and wild.

The film loosely follows their relationship over subsequent years, a series of vignettes

Jack Reacher is a wellmade thriller but your enjoyment of it will depend on one thing – what you think of Tom Cruise. Most specifically, if you are a reader of Lee Child’s series of books, what you think of Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, the famously tall and tough moral man of mystery. And, much as I enjoyed the film, I couldn’t shake the feeling – despite never having read the books – that Cruise was totally miscast. He tries to be so butch and serious but never really stops being Little Tom. Meanwhile, Werner Herzog is excellent but underused as the villain.

Dreams of a Life is a documentary, and a sad story it is too. It takes its start from the death of a woman in London, 38-year-old Joyce Vincent. Unbelievably her body lay in her depressing bedsit in front of the still-playing television for three years before anyone found her. The director gathers what friends of Joyce she can find and talks to them about this vibrant beautiful girl who seems to have one day just fallen off the radar. It’s very moving but also frustratingly short on key information and wider context, its runtime padded with unhelpful “recreations”.

Extracted is a little indie thriller that fell through the cracks and, well-assembled though it is, it’s not hard to see why. In it a guy invents a device that allows him to enter other people’s subconscious minds.

He wants to use it for medical assistance but a funding shortfall finds him coerced into crime-fighting inside the mind of a killer. Where he gets lost for four years. Low budget but smart, there are worse ways to spend your time despite echoes of The Cell and a well-known blockbuster which was presumably the reason this had its name changed from “Extraction”.

Phoenix’s Freddy Quell is almost unique in films, seemingly a representation of pure id.

His one skill is in creating brain-shredding alcoholic concoctions from almost anything on hand. His first big meltdown – while working as a department store photographer – seems triggered by a baby’s incessant crying. Or perhaps not.

On one level this is a parable of America adjusting to life after WW2, but it is also so much more. I already want to watch it again.

Robert Grindle is the clown equivalent of Bad Santa. Calling himself Stitches he quickly gets his comeuppance courtesy of a rotten show, some uppity kids and an unfortunately placed kitchen knife. The film’s bizarre leap is that clowns are members of a supernatural order - “a clown that doesn’t finish a party can never rest in peace” - so at another party a few years later the now-teenage kids are visited by a vengeful resurrected Stitches. It’s a gory Irish comedy horror that doesn’t take itself too seriously while delivering squirmingly twisted killings.

relying less on plot than slowly cumulative connections: scenes are brilliant in themselves but always seem to hint at a deeper meaning and symbolic resonance lurking elusively beneath the surface. This makes for either a fascinating and frustrating experience. Or both.

It is certainly an exceedingly good-looking film and the cast are exceptional – Amy Adams is positively frightening as the Master’s Lady Macbeth-like wife - but the deliberate pacing, oblique story and lack of

Witnessing musical democracy in action?

I finally bought a copy of Beck’s new album; now I’m trying to work out what to do with it.

Yes, I’m an old-fashioned sort of guy.

I buy albums. Despite ever dwindling space in the music room there’s something in me that still responds to having a physical product in my hands.

And there are some people whose albums I always buy. Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen obviously.

Jack White, Elvis Costello, Nick

Cave, Billy Bragg, Benji Hughes, The Low Anthem, Bill Callahan, Gillian Welsh... actually, it’s getting easier to see why the music room is becoming so crammed.

There are more too, and high up on the list is Beck. I first discovered Beck with his brilliant Odelay album. He’d had a big hit with the slacker anthem “Loser” but I’d kinda ignored it as a novelty song. How wrong I was.

Odelay, with now-seminal songs in the form of “Two Turntables and a Micro-

phone”, “Devil’s Haircut” and more, bore the stamp of greatness. He followed it with Mutations, a brave and complete change of direction, moving from the Dust Brothers cut-up hip-hop Odelay production to a live band. I still love it.

Radical reinvention

And from then on everything Beck has done has been a radical reinvention of whatever came before, be it modern funk on Midnight Vultures, Vultures the slow sad Sea Change or the percussive experiexperi ments of The Information (an CD that came with a blank front and a pack of do-it-yourself stickers so that “no two albums would look the same”).

But nothing has been quite as radical a departure as the new album Song Reader. It arrived by mail, a handsome package the size of an A4 book, its contents held between two solid blue hardback covers bearing the inscription “Twenty New Songs By Beck”. And the contents are... twenty beautifully illustrated and printed sheaths of sheet music. Twenty two in fact, as there is also an “introduction” and a “preface by Beck Hansen”.

I show it to friends who visit and, after a brief flick through the song sheets, they generally say “and where’s the CD?” There isn’t one.

The piano’s workout

So the piano’s been getting a bit of a workout as I vainly struggle with what a kinder person would call sight reading, trying to find out what the songs sound like. They’re not simple. Beck has always had a quirky way with melody and it hasn’t deserted him here. The songs with ukulele chords were a bit easier.

I’m still wondering about contacting the Tauranga Big Band to see what the song with a horn chart sounds like...

I did search out whatever looked easiest, just so’s I could at least try and get a handle on one song.

“The Wolf is on the Hill”, I can report, is a rather lovely folk tune. Quite old-timey. I could sing you a couple of verses.

But, of course, it’s only a folk song if you play it that way. Tag on a couple of electric guitars, a bass ‘n’ drum groove, or that big band and you’d get something quite different. And that’s pretty much the point.

You won’t hear Beck’s versions of these, even if you scour the internet. He has never recorded them. He doesn’t want to impose his vision of the songs over yours.

It’s a “do with them as you will” collection.

To that end he says “Don’t feel beholden to what’s notated. Use any instrument you want to. Change the chords; rephrase the melodies.

Keep only the lyrics, if desired. Play it fast or slow, swung or straight.

Take a song and make it an instrumental or an a cappella. Play it for friends, or only for yourself.”

Not bad advice for anyone wanting to cover oth any song, Beck’s or otherwise.

Anyone can upload videos or audio they’ve made of the songs. There are quite a few there and some of them pretty good.

It’s a way to hear the songs.

Strangely pleasing

Or at least versions of the songs, as any two can be shockingly different.

And, with no ‘original’ to compare to, every take is equally valid.

In fact, if there’s no ‘original’ is your version even a ‘cover version’? I find something funny and weird and strangely pleasing about that.

Perhaps this is musical democracy in action.

Hundreds of people gathered to watch reggae band Three Houses Down on Saturday night.

G2 Bar and Events Centre in Maleme St is a renovated reincarnation of former bar The Pub. The opening night far exceeded the expectations of all staff including group directors Carla Vaetoe, Gee Huirama and TEN4 promotional managers Tony Paekau and Pat Spellman.

Pat Spellman says they were cautiously optimistic, but everything went smoothly.

The event was headlined by international reggae band Three Houses Down, who played a mixture of old favourites and new tracks from an as-yet unreleased EP. The band was supported by local favourites Sweet Echo, The Kougar Sistas and G2 resident DJ Tiny.

“Our local acts stole the show,” says Pat.

Artists’ pastel pieces on full display The workshop, held by master pastelist Maxine Thompson, taught members to create complete portraits using pastels.

Her association with the Te Puke Art Society dates back to her mother, Mavis Jensen, who was a founding member of the Society.

Completed art pieces are on display for free at Constables Gallery on Saturday, May 25 from 10am to 1pm.

Wait, one more: Brilliant!

That’s how I’m choosing to describe Tauranga Repertory Society’s latest production ‘Bullshot Crummond’ which opened Wednesday night at 16th Avenue Theatre.

I went along with my theatre-loving sister – and I can honestly say – neither of us had giggled so much in ages.

Director Liam Hagan describes the show as a parody of the 1930s’ B-grade movie detective stories. In his sales pitch, Liam promises the talented cast will have the audience in fits of laughter.

Boy is he right! The small cast of five works extremely well together to create perfect comical timing, bouncing off one another with ease.

Being a small cast, a couple of members had the job of portraying more than one character. This would usually put me off, but it was done so cleverly that it became one of the production’s greatest attributes. At one stage, Alan Baker – who plays the evil German super-villain Count Otto – jumps between two characters every 30 seconds, speedily changing costumes behind a screen. The audience was in hysterics – in fact there was one lady behind us whose shrieks could probably be heard out in Te Puke. Or Hamilton.

My hat has to come off to Gavin Kerr – who debuts his Tauranga acting career as Bullshot Crummond – a hapless detective hired to track down and rescue a kidnapped professor from Count Otto.

Gavin is amazing – he absolutely stole the show with his incredible portrayal of an absolute idiot, who somehow manages to save the day despite making every mistake in the book. His ridiculous accent, magnificent body movements and facial expressions made our night.

A special mention goes to Jaden McLeod, whose scenes with Gavin were perhaps the best.

With absolute honesty, I recommend this show to anyone who fancies a good laugh and great night out. Bring some cash too – the cake at half time looked amazing!

Follow Jesus – because He’s the real deal Living in 2013, a time when it seems fashionable to have religious identification yet little conviction that would actually cause change in motive, purpose and behaviour, can appear confusing and result in disillusionment.

Into a remarkably similar environment, Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would

come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24). Here, in a single sentence, Jesus provides a comprehensive means of evaluating the authenticity of our spiritual beliefs.

Identifying with Jesus expresses itself through simple self-denial. Any possible negative consequences resulting from following Jesus Christ as Master will take preference.

The apostle Paul expressed his preference by admitting that: “I have been crucified

with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20).

Accepting Jesus’ love by faith is to relinquish our personal appetites in preference to obediently following Jesus.

Importance of changing the heart A letter to the editor

As I approach 25 years as a pastor, I have come to the conclusion if there is not a radical change in the way some Christians carry on, the world won’t see that we have something they should want.

Jesus said “I have come not to condemn the world but to save its occupants”.

Did you know Jesus was accused of being a friend of sinners? Wow, with the selfrighteous, pious, judgemental, religious behaviour we are not going to win people to Christ.

A classic example is all the protesting over ‘Boobs on Bikes’. The promoter thanked all the protesters for promoting his parade for free in the media.

Answer: pray for the promoters’ salvation until he gets saved.

Some say I am standing for righteousness – interesting as righteousness is a free gift from God. Jesus said to the woman caught in adultery, “I do not condemn you. Go and sin no more”.

The empowerment to sin no more

came from knowing she was forgiven, not condemned.

Unless you change the heart of a person on any issue (abortion) you are wasting your time and effort. It’s like constantly removing the cobweb but not getting the spider. Why do we quote the Bible to people who don’t believe it?

Has the present way of protesting worked? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results.

Prayer is the number one way to change a nation, and then getting the message out of the Good News of what Jesus has done and is doing for people – such as healing the sick, ministering to the broken hearted, giving the peace so desperately needed. Jesus healed the unsaved to show His love for them, so they would come to Him. Jesus is the only one that can change a heart, not judgement.

Sir, A statement was made recently in the Weekend Sun April 26 issue by Joseph McCauley, pastor of St Lukes church. He said: “...don’t point the finger and judge. Don’t fire off bible verses as if they somehow have sway in a secular context”.

In all my years as a bible teacher and street preacher that is one of the most carnal and unscriptural statements by a pastor I have heard.

It says in Tim 4:2: “Preach the word. Be instant in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine”.

What does he do with that? Make it apply only to Christians?

In Acts 17:2, it says the Apostle Paul “reasoned with them out of the scriptures”, and that was to unsaved Jews.

In 1 Cor.9:16, Paul also said: “woe unto me if I preach not the gospel”.

In Romans 10:17, the Bible also says “faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God”.

That remark by Joseph McCauley is that of one who is afraid to get in the firing line for the Lord Jesus Christ, and cares nothing of not telling a lost world of God’s amazing grace through faith in the finished work and shed blood of Christ. Shame!

Community work saddles up spirit award For five years, Thea James has volunteered at Tauranga Riding for the Disabled.

Each Saturday for five hours she cleans troughs, sweeps yards, weeds paddocks and helps clients ride horses.

But this isn’t the only reason the Aquinas College student was awarded 2013’s TrustPower Tauranga Youth Community Spirit Award.

Thea supports a number of projects.

At school, Thea has been a peer mentor, Senior Young Vinnies member, on the SADD Committee, Environment Committee and Special Character Committee. She’s also helped organise an art competition to promote responsible drinking.

TrustPower spokesperson Teresa Partridge says each school holidays, Thea gives volunteers three days at ‘Own Your Own Pony’ childrens’ holiday pro-

gramme. “You wouldn’t believe she has time – but Thea loves giving so much that every Saturday afternoon she also volunteers at Trinity Valley Farms. It also has a holiday programme that Thea helps with.”

Thea promotes Tauranga RDA at Rotary meetings and Lions Club dinners too. “Thea is an outstanding young woman who truly knows the value of community spirit,” says Teresa.

Thea receives $500 prize money, with $250 gifted to a community group of her choice - Tauranga RDA. Spirit award finalists were: Dylan Donne (Tauranga Boys’ College) for contributing to school life and volunteering at church; Kristen Vanderschantz (Tauranga Girls’ College) for being a strong leader in community and school, and a St John cadet; Carinda Reyneke (Bethlehem College) for a dedicated passion to volunteering at school and at church. Mount Maunganui women Tania Spiers and Dene Aitken are encouraging men to find out more about prostate cancer.

On Saturday, the pair hosted a fundraising dinner at Dui’s Thai restaurant in Mount Maunganui to raise money for Prostate Cancer New Zealand. A total of $3285 was raised.

Because the night was such a success Tania wants to make the dinner an on-going event in an attempt to raise the awareness of prostate cancer.

“We chose the charity because we thought it would be great for men. Men need a little bit of a hurry along [when it comes to going to the doctor],” says Tania.

More than 40 people attended Saturday night’s dinner.

On the night, a $400 voucher for a Taupo bar was auctioned off and sold for $1200.

Tania is grateful for the support she and Dene received. She says Hardy’s Health Stores donated 30 bottles of prostate care tablets valued at $30 per bottle. Men who attended the dinner each received a bottle.

MASTER Bedroom 4pc The Chiefs’ regular All Blacks will resume their national duties this weekend after being announced as part of the All Blacks wider training camps held at Mount Maunganui.

Chiefs squad members Ben Afeaki, Sam Cane, Aaron Cruden, Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Liam Messam and Brodie Retallick are in the 38-strong squad assembling in the Bay on Sunday for the first of two three-day camps.

The camps are in Mount Maunganui this Sunday to Tuesday and the second from May 26-28 ahead of the three tests against France in June.

The six Chiefs players are joined by eight Blues, nine Hurricanes and Crusaders for the first camp before the six Highlanders return for the second camp following their South African matches.

The only uncapped player from the Chiefs is towering prop Afeaki – a player on the rise hoping to regain his destructive form after an ankle injury hindered his impressive start to the season.

All Blacks head coach Steve Hansen says the two camps will give management a valuable head start in its early on-field preparations for the three Steinlager Series Tests against France next month.

“The camps will give us the opportunity to prepare a foundation on which we can grow our game throughout the Steinlager Series. As did last year, it will also give us a small window of opportunity to introduce some young players into the ways of the All Blacks and allow both these players and All Blacks management to get to know each other a little better.”

Steve says while the bulk of the squad to face France will come from the 38 players attending the camps, it does not rule out players who were not selected.
