Radical retreads feature of summer Kiwi ingenuity is alive and well, RR researchers discovered in the weekend during a routine inspection of thongs on the beach.

Now, before you all jump to smutty conclusions that RR researchers have spent their weekends ogling the scantily clad rear ends of shapely beachgoers – you’re wrong. Some of them are not shapely at all.

No, we’re not talking about bottom attire. The subject is casual footwear thongs, commonly known as jandals.

It was revealed that 52.7 per cent of New Zealanders in our extensive survey, of six people (with a margin of error of three) would rather repair their jandals, than fork out $6 for a new pair. It seems the challenge is more motivation than the cost savings, despite times being tough.

One jandal wearer, who we agreed to not name for fear of ridicule, says he gets so attached to his favourite flip flops and just can’t be bothered buying another pair.

weeks, or at least, as long as a loaf of bread. Then he simply replaces the clip.

Tony, an old hippie from back in the day when you were careful about admitting to wearing a thong, says it was common for their jandals to be repaired with nails or paper clips. That worked fine till the nail pierced the jandal, and often, the foot.

It seems the days of number eight wire have been superseded by this new generation, who prefer to

use cable ties and plastic bread bag clips for their ingenious Kiwi repairs on-the-run.

It got us thinking, that there are many clever do-it-yourself repairs happening every day, and we’d like to share those ideas with readers.

Panelbeaters nationwide will be jumping with glee. In a couple of months, all hell will break loose on local roads when the give way rules change.

From 5am on March 25, 2012, this new rule will require all traffic turning right to give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left. This applies at cross roads, T-intersections and driveways where both vehicles are facing each other with no signs or signals, or the same signs or signals.

Of course, this only applies to those who bother to give way in the first place, which in the Tauranga region, is about five per cent of you.

The rest, I guess, will carry on their merry way, creating intersection mayhem every day they’re on the road.

Others, of course, who thought the new rule was actually the law now, will be pleased that their incorrect interpretation, will, overnight on March 25, suddenly become the lawful way to drive.

The NZTA has launched an excellent publicity campaign, wisely booking with the largest circulating newspaper in the region.

They’ve seen the wisdom of reaching every mailbox in the region, in The Weekend Sun, the best read paper by a country mile – 63,000 copies going to the homes of 140,000 people – so you can’t do better than reaching the mailbox of every driver in the Bay. Still, there will be a small number who don’t understand it, or forget the rule change at the crunch moment.

The first time they are likely to understand the new give way rules is when their panelbeater explains it.

Good luck out there. We’re going to need it.

It might take more than a button or a bread clip to repair the March mishaps.

John Cowie was an England-raised businessman who started a plastics manufacturing business in Hong Kong after the war. His children claim that it was Cowie that started manufacturing a plastic version of the sandals in the late 1940s and that Yock was just a New Zealand importer. The children also say that their father claimed to have invented the name “jandal” from a shortened form of “Japanese Sandal”. John Cowie and his family emigrated to New Zealand in 1959.

Health scare forgotten for sights It was a dramatic entrance for a group of Japanese students travelling to Tauranga for a homestay visit this week when the class became the centre of a health scare at Auckland International Airport.

The 83 students and eight adult chaperones from Hitachi in Japan were detained when their Boeing 777-200 flight from Tokyo touched down in Auckland on Monday following fears students were suffering from flu-like symptoms.

On their way to Tauranga for an eight-night homestay, the students spent three hours being investigated by health authorities before being given the all clear.

A bit shaken, but still excited, the class of 17-year-old boys are now being billeted by Tauranga families as part of the international group homestay programme – Let’s Homestay.

Let’s Homestay director Stuart Cundy says all of the students are in full-health and excited to see what Tauranga has to offer.

“They are all fine, a bit of mild sniffles, but they have just come from winter in Japan.

“I think it was a bit of an overexaggeration.

“They are all excited to be here; they’re looking forward to going fishing this weekend.”

All students are in their second year at the Hitachi Technical School, owned by the Hitachi

Group, a multinational conglomerate and leading industrial machinery, electronics and telecommunications manufacturer.

Each student attends the school to be trained in one of three specialties; welding, machinery and electronics – with the intention of moving into jobs at the Hitachi factory upon graduation. They then move through the ranks into senior roles at the Hitachi Group.

Stuart says the visit to Tauranga is a chance for students to experience another way of life, to see what is outside the boundaries of the school and its boarding houses.

“All of the students are on scholarship to the school. They live in the dormitories there, some of them are from cities away from Hitachi.

“Because they are so schoolfocused, this is a chance for them to broaden their horizons, to experience the world,” says Stuart.

With Hitachi being Tauranga’s sister city, he says students from the school feel a “real bond” between their home and the Bay of Plenty’s largest city.

On Tuesday, students met with Tauranga City Council deputy mayor David Stewart at council chambers, where David welcomed students to Tauranga after the hectic start to their visit.

“It started off a bit shaky, I am glad that all the students managed to get here safely and now get to enjoy their time,” says David.

“The community benefits from having people come here and visit us; it’s a way to exchange culture and values.”

Students from the Hitachi school have been coming to Tauranga through the Greerton-based Let’s Homestay programme for the last nine years and Stuart says this will continue well into the future.

Longboard appeal to the ages HARD, FAST, FREE NEWS

A few years ago, longboarders were shunned as second-rate surfers, but times have changed.

This weekend, Mal Brady and his many longboarding mates from Mount Maunganui and around the country descend on Tay Street for the local heat in the national Hyundai longboarding series.

“There used to be a bit of stigma – like it is now with stand-up. People don’t say that now – there is a bit of fad going on now – it’s getting a lot more popular especially with the softer Mount waves,” says Mal. Mal has a chuckle at himself, saying perhaps it just seems to be getting more popular because it appeals to many surfers his age.

“Is it getting cooler or are we just getting older? I think it’s seriously a mixture.”

He is full of praise for Hyundai and Surfing New Zealand for the series, which he says the US and Australian competitors praise as the best of its kind.

Mal, who began surfing at eight years old, is a typical longboarder who loves the freedom of the waves, enjoying fun with his

mates off the water but giving it his best shot when competing.

He takes part in all the longboard events he can – and while describing his surfing as “pretty ordinary” – he has had a series of successes, including coming second in his initial longboard series five years ago and taking second place in this year’s Raglan event.

Before picking up longboarding, he would still sometimes compete in open events, but says being able to compete in over-40 or over-50 categories makes it more competitive.

“The over-40s and over-50s are very hotly contested – it’s almost as if they are more hotly contested than the other ones.

“It’s like it’s more competitive. It’s the old boys – there is a great camaraderie – but

when they get on the water, they are fiercely competitive.”

Among the other Mount ‘old boys’ he expects to take part are brothers Whare and Ratana Heke, Eric Burgraf, Guy Rencher and former national champ ‘Bongo’ Phil Griffin.

While Owen Barnes and Ant McColl are expected to continue to compete strongly in the open.

Off the water, Mal pours his energy into his other passion; music. Before Christmas, the musical he wrote ‘Colourful Soul’ was staged at the Mount Performing Arts Centre, in what he describes as a satisfying culmination of a few years work. He is now looking at staging the show in Auckland and possibly Canada.

Student O-week comes to town More than 4000 students are set to swarm Bay of Plenty Polytechnic’s campuses when the tertiary academic year kicks off next week.

Students and staff, including those from partnering institutions, University of Waikato and Waiariki Institute of Technology, are to be formally welcomed by Powhiri at both Bongard and Windermere Campuses at the start of the tertiary year on Monday, February 20.

Students then have two weeks before the much anticipated Orientation Week launches them fully into student life on Monday, March 5.

With top beach volleyball talent from around the Pacific competing at Mount Maunganui this weekend, rising star players from the region’s secondary schools will be looking for pointers.

Teams from Bay of Plenty’s secondary schools are preparing for the national secondary schools championships that follow the Oceania Zone Olympic qualifier at the Mount Maunganui Main Beach this Saturday. After a busy summer season, many of Otumoetai Colleges’ players are gearing up for a top contest – with college sports coordinator Jenny Kirk expecting

about 30 teams to take part.

“It’s a very popular sport. It’s a great sport for them to be involved in – it’s active and healthy and they enjoy being at the beach.”

Jenny says some of the school’s top players to look out for are Abbie Meredith and Julia Hartley. Both players are members of the New Zealand under-17 team and are gunning for selection in the under-19 squad after success at a tournament in Vanuatu, where playing in separate pairs they were second (Julia) and third (Abbie).

Since starting playing beach volleyball last year, Abbie’s game has gone from strength to strength. The success in Vanuatu followed a fifth place at the under-19 category in the national age groups competition in

late December. After making third place in the secondary competition last year, Abbie is aiming for another medal.

Otumoetai pair Willis Glen Vile and Daryl Lewis also had success at the Vanuatu competition, where they won gold in the under-17 competition. It’s an achievement Willis is particularly proud of given the 45 degree temperatures they were playing in. Both are playing in different pairs this weekend, but remain a serious threat.

Jenny also rates other players to look out for as top pairs, Charlie Clague and James Gilling, along with Holly Boyle and Katie Wood. They are up against top talent from all other schools in the region.

Hard work sees new target Club members have invested an immeasurable amount of time working through red tape, so the New Zealand Deerstalkers Bay of Plenty branch are welcoming members of the public to view the new ‘international standard’ 300m rifle range this Sunday.

Since the land was purchased for the TECT All Terrain Park in 2005, the Western Bay District Council and Tauranga City Council has worked with local shooting groups, including NZDA, to establish a suitable place to house all the shooting disciplines.

Development of the rifle range area started in December 2010. What began as a bit of tussock-ridden hill, has been transformed into a rifle range which, when completed, will be capable of holding international target shooting events.

For many, this project represents years of hard work and determination. NZDA BOP branch president Dean Maisey says at least 200 volunteer machine hours and in excess of 1200 volunteer labour man hours has been put into the project to date.

“The actual financial outlay so far is about $90,000, but this is expected to increase with further development.”

The NRA/NZDA certified range is located in the southwestern corner of the park at the end of Ngawaro Road.

It has a fixed (covered) firing position and fixed target details at 25m, 50m, 100m, 200m and 300m and is classed as a ‘no-danger-area range’. As such, all shots fired within the cone of fire must be captured by the range construction in such a way that there can be no ricochet induced.

The official opening welcomes members of the public to partake in the event, but the range is controlled by the NZDA BOP Branch predominantly for the use of its more than 300 members.

The open day on Sunday, February 19 runs from 9.30am onwards, with formalities and speeches from 10.30am.

New Zealand golfer’s Canadian connection Like the human equivalents of godwits, Ed Klaasen and his wife Kathryn are among a growing number of Canadians who are choosing to fly to New Zealand for the summer season.

The Klaasen’s experience has been similar to many other Canadians, discovering the appeal of New Zealand while visiting as tourists 12 years ago. They loved the place so much they came back the following Northern winter.

“We just said we really like this and since then we’ve come back every year,” says Ed. “Some of the other folks have been coming for seven or eight years or longer.

“The folks who are coming are all the way from Vancouver Island to Toronto so it’s a vast area of Canada that have discovered the appeal of the Bay of Plenty.”

Ed believes there is a strong commonality between the two nations with their shared British heritage, outdoorsy nature and “we’re not superpowers”.

“I think weather and golf and people are some of the keys that

draw people here to the Bay of Plenty.”

On Monday, February 20, golf takes centre stage when along with 50 other Canadians, “and a few from the US”, Ed competes with Kiwi golf partners at the 11th Canomu Invitational Golf Tournament at the Omanu Golf Course.

The annual golf competition – named for its Canadian-Omanu connection – began as a small fun event for the visitors and is a highlight on the visitor’s calendars.

“It has grown from a small

group and has become quite a popular event for Canadians that people want to be involved with.”

Ed describes the annual event as “just a bit of fun”, where members of the ex-pat community team up with a Kiwi player. Players are matched to create an even field of teams in the

Stableford event – with the top team winning a trophy while everyone else wins a small prize organised by the visitors.

“Everybody loves it. They get to catch up with each other and their many Kiwi friends and have a lot of fun.”

Katikati museum returning to community Plans to preserve the private Katikati Museum by putting it into community ownership have taken a major step forward, with a community trust expected to take over within six weeks.

Katikati Heritage Museum Charitable Trust chairman Alistair Boot says everyone involved in the project is excited about the progress that had been made.

A sales agreement has been signed with the private owners and settlement is expected to take place on the end of March.

He will not reveal the price to protect the owner’s privacy, but says they got the facility and all its collection for a “bargain” at half its value.

“Along with keeping all of the museum’s own collection, we have received a commitment from everyone who has items on loan to the museum (about 12 items) that this will continue. “We’re really happy about that.”

The owners have been trying to sell the museum for

two years. A community campaign to buy the museum was launched after the owners announced plans to sell off artefacts last March.

Western Bay Council has guaranteed the loan to enable the trust to borrow at lower interest rates and save significant interest expense. The trust is currently discussing loan options with banks. The loan will be repaid from grants from charitable trusts and other fundraising events.

Alistair says the museum will probably be closed for about a month to reorganise and tidy the centre, before reopening with a launch event.

Initially, the museum will be staffed by volunteers, but he says many other details are still to be finalised.

Alistair says all the trust members, including Bev Oswald, Bruce McCutcheon, Kevin Taylor, Brendan Gibbs, Thys Polstra and himself, hope everyone in Katikati and Western Bay community feel it is their museum and strongly support it.

Passing it to the girls Girls, are you fast on your feet, good at dodging opponents and inspired by sporting glory? You could be just the talent Bay of Plenty Rugby Union is looking for as future sevens stars.

With women’s rugby sevens becoming an Olympic sport in 2016, the Bay rugby union is starting a new push to attract future stars to the sport.

The new focus on the game at secondary level kicks off on Saturday with the Bay of Plenty Secondary Schoolgirls Sevens tournament at Paengaroa Domain.

Union operations manager Neil Alton says until now, the women’s rugby focus at secondary level had

been on the 15 a-side game, but the admission of the sevens game into the Olympics had changed this.

“We are focused on giving our local women’s players the best chance of representing New Zealand at the 2016 Olympics,” says Neil.

“A schedule of Bay women’s sevens activity is aimed to provide stepping stones for local women players, to learn the sevens game through the development of enhanced skills and knowledge.

“We are hopeful that girls will see this as a new opportunity to develop their ball-skills and go on to gain sporting honours.”

Neil says the union hopes to build the region into a centre of sevens excellence and leverage off the advantage of having acclaimed national coach Gordon Tietjens

based here.

“Gordon Tietjens provides us with a great leadership point to build on sevens in the province and he is very supportive of anything to promote sevens and we’re keen to take advantage of that.”

Former New Zealand Sevens star Chad Tuoro has been appointed to the union’s new development role to help identify talent, then develop them into international standard players, with the aim of establishing a nationally-recognised women’s sevens development programme.

Following this weekend’s regional competition, the Western Bay will host the North Island Secondary Schoolgirls tournament on March 29-30, before holding a talent scouting camp in April.

Grassroots of surf lifesaving on show We’ve just had the glitz and glamour of the Lion Foundation NZ Surf League in Mount Maunganui, but this weekend the grassroots of surf lifesaving is on show.

The proud Pukehina club is hosting the Harris Cup on Saturday, named after club founder Selwyn Harris, which sees some of the smaller clubs around the Bay of Plenty come together to compete. The hosts – who beat Whakatane by a point last year – go up against the likes of Maketu, Whiritoa and Opotiki on the beach in a range of events.

Omanu

It was good to see some great competition at the Surf League and well done to all the Omanu members who represented the club; Jessica Gadsbey, Kane Sefton, Ben Cochrane, Dannielle O Connor, Max Beattie and Dan Hooker.

The seniors have been training hard, with a small number heading to the Northern Region champs at Ruakaka this weekend. Our coaches have been working hard with the athletes, Brad Murdoch – swimming; Thom Yule – ski; and Mark Inglis – board.

Since Christmas, Simon Willis has returned from Auckland and has been assisting our athletes with their Ironman training.

Also, our Masters are starting to sharpen up their training for nationals in Gisborne next month, where they hope to defend their national title.

While our Oceans 12 team are fine tuning their training under the guidance of coach Brooklyn Reardon-Nikara, with competition starting next Thursday at the Mount Main Beach.

This weekend will see the introduction of a new Mule vehicle for our voluntary patrols. It’s a safer option than our quad bike and will allow our guards to be posted at Tay Street and Arataki, while providing better protection from the elements. Thank you to Southern Trust and First Sovereign for their donations towards the new vehicle.

Papamoa

Papamoa athletes Natalie Peat and Kodi Harman shone for the open team at the Surf League, with both 17 year olds stepping up against much older opposition.

Natalie shouldered the Ironwoman burden for the weekend and finished fifth in a class field both days, behind Australians Devon Halligan and Joanna Baxter, and top Kiwis Nikki Cox and Maddie Boon.

“It’s huge for a 17 year old, especially after getting pulled up late into the Ironwoman,” says Bay of Plenty and Papamoa coach Kurt Wilson.

“I’m looking forward to the future with

Jess Miller and Natalie doing those swims together – Jess is still only 16, but they got second in the surf teams race yesterday which was huge.

“Kodi was dominant on the track and then got fourth in the flags – stuff like that is really cool.”

Papamoa athletes also helped the under19 and under-14 teams finish second, while the all-conquering under-16s were brilliant as they beat the other seven provinces in New Zealand.

Yachtsman search off

Emergency services are no longer searching for missing yachtsman Richard Rusbatch after an extensive search over the last two days failed to find him.

The 56-year-old charter boat operator from Russell went missing after setting sail on the 38 foot yacht

Honfleur from Tauranga Bridge Marina on Sunday.

Honfleur was found unmanned circling with the motor running and anchor dragging about 20km east of Mayor Island on Tuesday morning.

RCCNZ Search and Rescue mission coordinator Dave Wilson says at this stage too much time has passed to reasonably believe Richard is still alive.

The unmanned yacht he was travelling on was found by Whanagamata skipper Kevin Prout, travelling on his fishing boat Vanamara from Mayor Island to White Island.

The Honfleur was sailed back to Sulphur Point Marina on Tuesday afternoon.

Dave says the search could resume if any new information comes to light.

The future planners of the Western Bay of Plenty now have a helpful resource when planning for the development of the region with the launch of the new ‘Managing Growth – SmartGrowth’ kit.

The new teaching resource aimed at providing high school students with tools to effectively manage growth in the Bay of Plenty was launched at a special breakfast.

Featuring a giant map and floor game, PowerPoint slide shows, role play cards, worksheets and information sheets, the resource kit provides a fun and effective way for students to learn about community planning.

The teaching resource is available on BOP Regional Council’s website www.boprc. govt.nz/smartgrowth and will be used in schools this year.

Assault case to air on Police Ten-7

Police hope the screening of a sexual assault case on the television show Police Ten-7 will help them locate the offender involved in the attack on a 15-year-old girl.

The girl was attacked while walking through Kuirau Park in Rotorua at about 7pm on January 8 this year.

Police have been investigating the incident and are hoping the screening on TV2 at 7.30pm tonight will help them locate the offender.

Detective Jeff Alpe says the girl was trying to return a pair of glasses she found at the park when she was attacked.

People with information about the assault are being asked to contact Rotorua Police Station or alternatively they can provide information anonymously via the independent Crime Stoppers line on 0800 555 111.

Sunken container operation underway

Salvors are removing containers and cargo from the sunken stern section of the Rena wreck on the Astrolabe Reef.

Svitzer salvors have used wire ropes to secure the Smit Borneo crane barge to the port quarter of the wreck.

There are still containers on the bow section of the wreck and salvors are continuing to cut and grind them, with assistance from helicopters to remove debris.

Container salvage contractor Braemar Howells has received a total of 491 containers from the Rena, and recovered another 70 from the sea/beaches. A further 17 have been located which are still to be recovered.

This brings the total either recovered or located to 578 out of the original 1368 onboard when the Rena ran aground at the reef on October 5.

Rebuilding shattered and shaken lives In a moment of absolute crisis and panic, it becomes the little things that stick in your mind.

For Darni Tonge, she remembers heading back home so her partner could rescue his Xbox and computer, before departing the earthquake-torn city of Christchurch forever.

A year on and Darni, 23, remembers the day like it was yesterday. Her state of mind seriously affected, it is clearly upsetting, even now, to recount the feeling of panic she experienced.

Darni was seven months pregnant during the September 2010 earthquake. On January 25, she gave birth early through emergency C-section to her daughter Nevaya, 13 months.

With another little one at home, Keiara, two at the time, Darni says it was pure luck she managed to avoid the CBD on the day of the February quake in 2011.

“We were due to go to Births, Deaths and Marriages to register Nevaya at 11am. I was feeling sick so mum told me to sleep in.

“We were literally out the door when it hit.

I was putting Keiara in her car seat, and it just happened.

“We lived in a block of five brick units in St Albans and a lot of the bricks had come down, the back wall had bowed, you could see where it had cracked all the way up. It was really bad, everything inside was demolished.”

In a state of shock, Darni wasn’t hit by the full force of what had happened until she saw people emerging through the dust from the CBD, recalling horror stories as people had seen buildings crush pedestrians, the centre in total chaos.

Unable to reach her partner Marc Blacker for five hours, she feared the worst. Despite working around the corner, it took him that long to get home.

On February 24, Darni and Marc left Christchurch to begin a new life in Tauranga.

“Home wasn’t safe for me anymore,” says Darni.

“When we went, we went back to my place to get our cat and pick up pieces we could find. I sat to the side because I couldn’t bring myself to go back into the house.”

Initially, Darni was unable to live on her own without flatmates to comfort her during the hours Marc would be at work.

The two have now been living alone for five months, but Darni says she is still in a state of mind of constant unease.

“We get some people going fast down the driveway and it begins to rumble. Marc and I go into meerkat mode – big noises we are not good with.

“Keiara is the same, she really freaks out when she hears the rumbles she runs screaming every time.”

Rise Up Tauranga organiser Rosalie Crawford says the project has been instrumental in bringing relocated Cantabrians together.

“All the way, we used www.webhealth.co.nz.

We saw traumatised children linked with counsellors from Relationship Services and Family Works, people who had never had to go to WINZ before assisted through that process, and rental companies like Bay Home Rentals got alongside families and provide extra help while they found their feet.”

Rise Up Tauranga is hosting an event on the anniversary of the February earthquake for Cantabrians and supporters to meet and watch the televised memorial ceremony in Christchurch.

Noisy fun right at home Originally dubbed ‘noisy boys’ park, the TECT All Terrain Park is a permanent home for activities no longer suitable amongst our increasingly urbanised community.

The 1700ha park title carries warnings for anyone purchasing neighbouring property to expect activities that create noise and involve what some might call ‘dangerous sport’.

It has taken longer than anticipated to get activities underway, but a councillor visit last week confirmed that user groups are actively moving in.

Tauranga Model Aircraft is putting in runways. This involves significant earthworks as model aircraft are no longer the toys of yesteryear and now require a mini airport.

Construction of a claybird shooting range is underway with huge earthworks being done.

Deerstalkers have a 300 metre range nearing completion after carving it out of a valley.

The shooting venues will be fenced and regulated to provide a safety first area.

Mountain bike trails are established along with horse riding and equestrian activities.

Motorsport have the forest roads to run events on and radio-controlled off-roaders also have their own track.

There are four-wheel drive tracks and motorbike tracks for learner, intermediate and accomplished riders.

The facilities are maintained by club members volunteering their considerable talents.

TECT has provided significant funding and the initiative is the result of a successful partnership between Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council.

Even if you aren’t actively

involved, it’s worth a stop at the visitor information centre, just off the main road at the top of Pyes Pa Road.

There is participation from Rotorua residents, but so far their district council has not helped with park development funding.

We made submissions to them, so far unsuccessfully, but hope springs eternal.

Another quality park is McLaren Falls Park and at the opening of its new visitor information centre last week I read a brochure that said it is Tauranga’s best kept secret. It is.

Up the Kaimais, just off the main highway, this park has an excellent rustic cafe and with the trees and a lake this is a serene and picturesque place for a family to visit.

An oldie, but a goodie

On Saturday, I attended the Otumoetai Golf Club season opening.

Again, a self-help group of enthusiastic members have organised this valley into a great amenity.

They lease the land off council, which retains it as a flood plain.

The two parks and this golf course have much in common.

The council facilitates the base amenity, such as land, and people take over and organise and fund their own activity. It’s the way of yesteryear and it’s the way of the future – council helping people help themselves.

Rates change first

Local Government Minister Nick Smith has signalled ‘reform’ is needed.

He may well be right, but – and it’s a big ‘but’ – there are bigger things to ‘reform’ rather than rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic; for instance, the rating system.

He has a 2007 report outlining some 92 issues identified by the Shand Report as requiring attention. It says the rating system is unsustainable into the future.

He should consider Auckland Mayor Len Brown’s dissertations this week on Auckland’s rating woes on how to fund his city into the future.

With amalgamation of eight local authorities he has proposed what could be described as raging socialism by decreeing that no-one will get more than a 10 per cent rate increase, nor more than a 5.6 per cent rate decrease; never mind what service you get, nor your ability to pay, and that’s just for the next three years.

In the fourth year, 25,000 houses will be faced with a more than 10 per cent increase.

He wants to take money off ratepayers getting big rate decreases and use it to limit ‘hefty’ increases.

This is madness and grossly unfair and just one example of the effects of amalgamation. So if there is to be change it should be to the rating system as well.

In simple terms, the general rate could be levied as a percentage of income – just like an ACC Levy.

And Mr Smith has experience there as former ACC Minister.

The 1989 amalgamation of Tauranga, Mount and Papamoa did not provide savings as promised.

In much the same way as Len Brown outlines, all that happened was that some subsidised others, and in my opinion, the more established areas paid for the less established areas to be brought up to speed – regardless of the individual ratepayer ability (or desire) to pay.

Downtown retail challenges More businesses closing down in downtown Ward believes the downtown area has suffered due to a lack of strong leaderTauranga are sparking Tauranga Mainstreet ship from the council or Tauranga to look closely at the issue of high rents.

Mainstreet manager Kirby Weis says many businesses want help with the issue after already cutting all the costs they can, but he is unable to say how the board will consider helping at its meeting on Tuesday.

Long-term Tauranga fashion stores Laurie Young Menswear, Maison Monique and Mackenzie Country are about to close, while Aristocrat Adult Shop is shifting to Greerton for half-price rent. Other recent closures include Living and Giving and Barkers Menswear.

Aristocrat owner John McCoy says the business was losing money on its Cameron Road premises and believes downtown rentals need to come down to a more “realistic” level.

John says the rate is $180/Sqm; he was paying $4000/month plus GST and expenses.

Maison Monique owner Ward Reid says rentals should be reduced in the central city to reflect lower retail sales levels – which he estimates have fallen 30 per cent for most downtown businesses during the last five years.

“But everything else keeps going up – insurance and all your fixed costs. It’s all about income and expense – if you haven’t got the income you can’t spend it,” says Ward.

McMahon Commercial owner Denis McMahon argues it is too simplistic to blame rental prices for any problems or argue for all rents to be dropped because of the slowdown.

“It definitely has been a tenant’s market – a lot of landlords have been doing deals to attract tenants or keep them.”

He says arguing rents should be dropped because of the slowdown, is the same as saying tenants should have given the landlords a share of the “boom-time” sales from 2003-2008. He says landlords had to cover increasing costs.

Both Denis and Kirby argue it probably appears a lot of places are shutting due to the closure of some long-time iconic retailers, including Laurie Young and Maison Monique, and because leases often expired at this time of year.

Brighter future

Kirby says while businesses are continuing to find it tough, the downtown area has attracted 20 new stores in the last six months and there is a lot to be excited about, including the redevelopment of the waterfront and the tertiary education campus.

Traders spoken to also complained metered parking, competition from satellite shopping centres and a lack of leadership to drive downtown growth were also problems.

Mainstreet manager Kirby Weis accepts there has been a lack of strong leadership in the past, but a focus on greater collaboration between the Tauranga City Council, Mainstreet, Priority One and other central city stakeholders has prompted them to work more closely together to promote the area.

Status Clothing managing director Keith Livingstone says the fall-off in downtown foot traffic and difficulties competing with the free-parking offered by satellite shopping centres had prompted the decision to prepare to close its Mackenzie Country store in Grey Street. Keith believes the only way for downtown businesses to compete was to cover the cost of free-parking in their annual Mainstreet subs, but Kirby rejected this as an unneccesary extra expense.

Back to the Beehive Parliament has now been going for a fortnight and I have enjoyed being back in Wellington where I have a new role as chairman of the Finance and Expenditure Select Committee.

This committee occupies a significant place within Parliament as it takes a lead in the legislature’s role of approving all governmental taxation and spending and also in examining all government department spending plans and previous performance.

A central part of its job is to hold the gov-

ernment accountable for its public finance decisions.

In addition, we hold public inquiries and hearings on reports by Treasury and the Reserve Bank so issues in regard to New Zealand’s financial and economic system get publically aired.

Back at home in Tauranga, it has also been eventful. A particular highlight was attending the Korean Grace Orchestra Concert last Saturday at Holy Trinity Tauranga. The orchestra was visiting from South Korea and performed a wide range of popular classical pieces by such renowned composers as Mozart and Beethoven. The event was hosted by Tauranga’s Korean community, which is growing in number and is a valued part of our city’s fabric.

Mixed ownership

There has been a lot in the news recently about the government’s mixed ownership model, so I thought I would set out our position on it all. National is working hard to lift national savings, give New Zealanders more investment opportunities, keep government debt under control and get a better mix of assets to deliver public services and help grow the economy.

That’s why we’re extending the mixed-ownership model – under which Air New Zealand currently operates – to four state-owned energy companies, while keeping a majority stake in each business.

Mixed ownership is a win-win for New Zealand.

New Zealanders get to invest in big Kiwi companies.

We would rather pay dividends to mum and dad investors than interest on higher debt to foreigners.

The Honkie meets the honker Our big outing of the week was down to the lakes to chase rabbits. Not surprising, with the way these two-leggers shoot, that we came back with geese.

Is this some kind of a joke? The bosses go “rabbit” hunting and come back with these.

I didn’t know rabbits could fly?

So they nailed the odd rabbit and several wayward possums, but just as well I didn’t have my rabbit recipes at the ready. You have to wonder about their sense of direction when the rabbits are running along the ground and the geese are flying overhead.

The action started when we arrived at Uncle Keith’s hideaway. I was out of the truck in a flash, as usual, heading for Auntie Chris’s chook run, to check out…

I guess the moral of the story is, when rabbit hunting, don’t count your chickens before a wild goose chase.

well, the chooks! Me thinks Chris was given a little warning I was turning up this time though, as they were not free range – a little disappointing, but I can only work with what is in front of me.

Flo was more interested in the new addition to our little pack, namely another canine pup Jess, who being the same age as Flo, is going to be fun whenever we get together.

Uncle was busy getting on the water with kayak and shotgun, and heading off into the distance before the lads could rip the top off a “woody”.

We were left to get dinner together before darkness and prepare ourselves, not only for the return of uncle, but for our venture into the undergrowth in search of any fair game (did not even have to be fair).

A kayak appeared on the beach, with geese and uncle, a successful mission to be sure, but as soon as the honkers hit the grass, Flo was nowhere to be seen.

Neither could I, because I was covered in feathers, but Flo was in a state of shock and did not want to know about the feathered beasts. No worries Flo, it is all a steep learning curve; do what you have to and I will cover your back.

After another sumptuous dinner provided by Chris and Keith – the best hosts and mates you could find – we were off into the undergrowth in the pitch dark searching for rabbits.

But apparently us charging around in the dark is not the way to hunt rabbits. So after 30 minutes of heated verbal exchanges, Flo, Jess, and I were sent back to the house to keep Chris company (and the chooks), while the boys continued their search.

All I can say from the sounds of laughter, shouting and guns going off, the area was going to be minus a few rodents. A great evening was had by all, and two tired dogs and their owners piled into the transport for a late night trip home.

The annual WBOP Scouts Mudslide Day is fun for the whole family.

Children of all ages are invited to get down and dirty on an energetic obstacle course using lots of water and mud at the annual Mudslide Day on February 26.

Based on a military style training course, but toned down for youth – and adults – Mudslide Day is open to the community as a family day to share the adventures of scouts.

“We have secured the perfect site at a large dairy farm owned by the Bruning family on Omokoroa Road, off State Highway 2,” says event manager Andy Goodall from Te Puna Scout Group.

“It has excellent access, high visibility and most importantly, an awesome 60 metre hill and lots of swampy areas to create our slide and muddy obstacles.”

Activities on the day will showcase the fun and adventure scouting has to offer.

There is a large 80m slide with a sloppy mud pool at the bottom, a 10m low crawl under cargo nets, a swing bridge and lots of other obstacles for people to

take part in.

Entry into the Mudslide is $10.

The WBOP Scouts Mudslide Day at Bruning Farm, Omokoroa Road is February 21 from 9.30am to 3pm. Everyone is welcome.

On your bike Katikati Bike fever is hitting Katikati with a series of events happening as part of Bikewise Month.

Katch Katikati promotions manager Jacqui Knight says there has been a lot of interest in the events, including a fun family bike ride this Sunday and preschooler event ‘Tykes on Trikes’ on Thursday.

“We are hoping a lot of people will turn up for these events and join in the fun,” says Jacqui.

She says the family bike ride has been designed for safety, going mainly through parks and on tracks – with the few

road crossings monitored by members of the volunteer fire brigade.

The bike ride starts from outside the Dave Hume Pool at 3pm on Sunday, where all cyclists who finish the 15-30 minute ride earn a free swim.

Preschoolers are encouraged to decorate their bikes for the tricycle event at 10am Thursday, February 23, when they can race around a track at Moore Park and over fun obstacles.

Spot prizes of puncture repair kits and other cycling equipment are up for grabs and everyone taking part goes in the draw to win a bike.

Last week we discussed ‘fun’ – what it is and how we should establish for our children that fun is the result of hard work and achieving goals, rather than vacantly watching TV, playing video games or uncontrollable hyper destructive play.

The other bit of education we must work on with our children is our use of language and how we program them for successful thinking.

If you think you can or you can’t you’re right – our language not only determines who we are, but pre-programs our children’s expectations of their own outcomes. I love working with parents on how they speak with their kids and seeing profound change as children rewrite their own internal dialogue.

In the last week I have heard; “Don’t worry, I was hopeless at maths”; “Don’t worry, I never had

We all can fall into these language

traps and confidence knockers instructing subliminally our child’s responses and reinforcing our own. Simple changes are usually profound; “I know what it’s like to have to work hard at maths, but we know you can do anything you make your mind up about so let’s make a decision to get on top of maths this year”.

The other component for our Mile High Karate students is an instructor, mentor, role model reinforcing that they can do and be anything they want as long as they work at it and celebrating every little success along the way.

A cucumber for your thoughts No summer seems complete without the sweet watery crunch of the telegraph cucumber.

However, as a self-confessed brown thumb when it comes to gourd growing, I have no option but to procure friendships with those more garden able…or buy.

And therein lies the dilemma; my stomach says yes, but my plastic-

adverse heart at the vege counter screams no!

The answer lies, as usual, in understanding and compromise.

The plastic prolongs shelf life; unwrapped, they last 72 hours before moisture transpires through the skin and leaves the cucumber all soft; wrapped gives them 10 to 14 days.

The short ones have different skin so do not need the wrap and in Australia, the smaller Lebanese

cucumbers, which have a similar skin to the telegraph, are none the less au natural due to the high turnover.

So for me, it is the shorties that I buy and if my mother – who is of the opinion that world obesity could be easily cured if people only ate the skin of all fruit and vegetables – is not within a 200km radius, I peel them. Then eat them.

Yum. Actually, I have also discovered

that by far, the best car food is a lunch box of cut up cucumber, capsicum and celery; not too sweet, just the right crunch and is stops you getting thirsty, with no crumbs and no packets! Perfect.

So enjoy these salad days and remem-

ber a cucumis sativus by any other name will taste as sweet – if you peel it.

Method Cut tomatoes thinly, cut Mozzarella balls into circles. Place a piece on each of the toasted Bruschetta, season with salt and pepper. Before serving, place a fresh basil leaf on each one, drizzle with olive oil and Balsamic cream.

The flavours of summer During summer, the accelerated growth from the garden often brings an abundant array of flavours to our attention.

My favourite February flavours, such as tomatoes and capsicums, hang from the plant and seem to scream at you to eat them. There is nothing quite like slicing into a fresh capsicum or tomato for your sandwich or salad. Both vegetables are also fantastic slowly baked with a rice filling and copious amounts of olive oil.

This week’s authentic Greek recipe is a great antipasto dish, often eaten warm or cold. The slow cooking concentrates the flavour and even the colours seem brighter. It’s a true taste of the Mediterranean.

Stuffed Tomatoes and Capsicums Ingredients 6 firm ripe tomatoes 6 large green peppers 2 onions, finely chopped 1 cup of tomato juice Small bunch parsley, finely chopped 1.5 cups Arborio rice 1.5 cups olive oil 2 tsp sugar Method Wash the tomatoes and peppers very well. From one end of each tomato, cut a slice, but do not detach completely as it must act

as a lid. Then with a spoon, empty the tomato of all the pulp and reserve. Do the same with the peppers, dispose of any seeds, arrange peppers and hollowed out tomatoes in a baking tray.

Place the onion and 3/4 cup of olive oil in a frying pan before the onion has quite softened, add the rice and fry till transparent. Chop up the pulp of the tomatoes; add this and half the juice to the rice.

Add salt and pepper and the finely chopped parsley, add half a cup of vegetable stock or water and allow the ingredients to cook until most of the water has been absorbed, about 15-18 minutes.

Sprinkle a little sugar into each tomato and pepper, then spoon the rice filling until a bit more than half way up to allow for swelling of the rice. Add on a spoon of water and another sprinkle of sugar and close the lids. Pour in rest of tomato juice and olive oil and bake uncovered in a moderate oven, 150-170 degrees, for about one hour. Water fight to break records

Helping disadvantaged children has never been more fun or rewarding than taking part in an attempt to set a new world for the biggest water fight.

The record attempt taking place on March 6 at Tauranga Racecourse is a fundraising and promotional event for Variety – The Children’s Charity.

Thomas is organising the event with Tauranga Variety team ‘Every Little Boys Dream’.

She says there is a great response from everyone she had spoken to.

“Everyone is saying they really love the idea of getting involved in a world record, especially for the largest water fight,” says Victoria.

The idea for the record attempt came from the Every Little Boys Dream group – which takes part in the annual Variety Tour Bash fundraising for disadvantaged children.

Team member Mark Hellyer believes the people of Tauranga can break the record of 2671 people in a water fight and is encouraging everyone to get involved.

Mark, who has been supporting Variety for 10 years, says nothing beats the satisfaction of seeing “a lot of smiles and a lot of tears” from those benefitting from Variety’s fundraising. He expects the event to raise at least $6000.

Together with friends and their vintage 1965 fire engine, Mark set up Every Little Boys Dream group six years ago. The team, which includes members Geoff Butler, Steve Morgan, Mark Passey, Paul Thomas, Paul Sykes and John Preston, has raised about $130,000 for Variety and Bay of Plenty initiatives for disadvantaged children.

Animal advice on tour Tauranga SPCA is looking to help animals in your neighbourhood, with a series of regular visits to community centres in the Western Bay of Plenty.

The first visit is to Te Puke Community Centre on Wednesday, February 22 from 9am until 12pm.

Community liaison and education

officer Nicole Fensom is leading the visits, which provide free advice on pet care and dog behaviour, as well as give residents a chance to voice any concerns they have regarding their pet.

The visit can also provide some treatments such as worm treatment and microchipping for a small payment.

There is also the opportunity for residents to make donations or discuss adoption opportunities.

Growing minds A school garden project at Greenpark School has been declared a resounding success, with teacher Ben Brock encouraging other schools to do the same.

A working bee in August converted a disused section behind a Greerton office into a garden for the primary school. The project has been largely funded by the Tauranga Rotary Club.

“It’s been a really fantastic little project for everyone,” says Ben. He says all the pupils have learnt so much from managing and growing a garden.

“I would definitely recommend it to other schools – it’s been such a great experience for the children and we’ve had lots of great feedback from people walking by.”

Along with enjoying their own produce, Ben says pupils have learnt about nature’s cycles – including the importance of bees for pollination.

Ben says the garden is overflowing with vegetables after the summer growth and students are thinking about giving some produce to the Tauranga Food Bank.

“The teachers are growing their own coffee bush – in the hope of getting a good supply of beans for the staff room, so it will be interesting to see how that goes.”

Cardboard coffins proving popular Traditional coffins with a cardboard coffin inner are becoming increasingly popular says Hope Family Funerals director Tony Hope.

In an ocean that had always been part of his world, on a beach he had grown to know well throughout his lifetime, Peter Apaapa became a tragic drowning victim after a swift rip carried him out from Te Puna beach to Tauranga Harbour.

Real shock

Peter’s older brother Nick Apaapa, 63, says it is still “a real shock” for the family, friends and neighbours that knew Peter well because he had grown up in the area.

“We were all brought up on the sea, living just one mile from it. That’s how we did most of our living. As soon as we could walk, we were collecting pipis; it was just our way of life.

“A lot of us are shocked how this has happened, because Peter knew the area and all the sandbanks so well. He was out in this exact same spot just two weeks ago, collecting pipis by himself.”

The 54 year old father and new grandfather disappeared on Friday afternoon near Te Puna beach after failing to return from retrieving his son, Peter, and nephew Cotton Tai from the water where they had been collecting pipis. His body was later found a kilometre down the channel towards the direction of Mount Maunganui.

Nick was only miles away from the beach where Peter went missing, but it was not until he had arrived at the beach that he learned of the heart-breaking news.

“It was quite sad. His wife (Kahui) had a lot of confidence he was alright, and it wasn’t until they found him that she started feeling it. She is still quite upset but everyone has

come together now.”

Speeding past Bay schools A campaign designed to reduce speed around schools has seen 777 drivers caught speeding in school zones.

A police operation held in the Western Bay of Plenty area from January 31 to February 10

resulted in 711 speed camera and 66 other speeding infringements.

The highest speed recorded in a 50km/h school zone was 67km/h. Senior Sergeant and officer in charge of road policing Ian Campion says this is way too fast.

At that speed, it will take an alert driver 51 metres to stop and leaves little chance for a child to survive if struck by a vehicle says Ian. The highest speed recorded in a 40km/h zone was 63km/h. Ian says you can’t miss 40km/h signs when they are illuminated so there is no excuse for speeding in these areas.

Ian says the most common factor for why drivers continue to speed in these areas is driver distraction.

Ian urges drivers to keep their speed down and take extreme care around schools to ensure children get to and from school safely.

Parents delivering and picking up children also need to do their bit by being considerate, ensuring seat belts or child restraints are used correctly and they park legally to reduce risk.

“They need to be aware of parking and ensure they are not parking illegally. For example, the other day in the rain, parents were parking on yellow lines to get their children close enough without getting wet, but this action is illegal.”

Ian says it is up to the parents to set a good example for the future generations of drivers sitting in the back seat, and ensure their survival by obeying the road rules.

The key risk times are between 7.30am to 9am and 2.30pm to 4pm week days.

The most vulnerable age group are aged five and nine years, with more than 90 per cent of pedestrian casualties occurring on urban roads with a speed limit of 70km/h or less.

Putting changes in gear The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) says a multi-media public awareness campaign will kick off next month to ensure that drivers are aware of changes to New Zealand's give way rules.

NZTA Chief Executive Geoff Dangerfield says publicity around the rule changes, which change over at 5am on Sunday March 25, was being carefully timed in order to ensure maximum awareness of the changes.

“In the long run the new rules will help to reduce confusion and reduce crashes by making decision-making easier for drivers at intersections, but there are obvious safety risks if some people start following the new rules too early.”

On March 25, there are two changes. The first change is the left-turn versus right turn rule where all traffic turning right to give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left.

This applies at cross roads, T-intersections and driveways where both vehicles are facing each other with no signs or signals, or the same signs or signals.

The second change is at uncontrolled T-intersections (‘uncontrolled’ means when there are no signs or signals to tell you what to do) where all traffic from a terminating

road (bottom of the T) will have to give way to all traffic on a continuing road (top of the T). This will bring it into line with T-intersections where there are Stop or Give Way signs on the terminating road. No changes will take place to roundabouts.

Geoff says a $1.2 million nationwide advertising campaign promoting awareness of the rule changes would begin on March 15, ten days prior to the ‘go-live’ date, and would continue through until April 1.

The campaign will include TV, radio, online and print advertising, along with a leaflet door drop to 1.73 million homes. The ads will focus on highlighting the date of the change, and will provide a simple overview of the new rules.

The advertising campaign will be preceded by a major update to the official website for information on the new rules - www.giveway.govt.nz on February 29.

At the same time half a million leaflets detailing the rule changes will be distributed via councils, Police, the NZTA and driver licensing agents.

Changing the give way rules is one of the first actions being implemented as part of the Government’s Safer Journeys road safety strategy, aimed at significantly reducing death and injury on New Zealand’s roads by 2020.

Bikers and drivers are encouraged to be road safe this summer in a new campaign highlighting the dangers behind ‘car versus motorbike’ accidents.

The ACC campaign is in collaboration with Tauranga Western BOP Joint Road Safety Group.

The campaign, ‘Look out for motorbikes’, targets drivers of both vehicles and motorcycles, to encourage them to drive and ride safely.

The aim is to reduce the high percentage of serious injuries and fatalities in Tauranga and Western BOP.

ACC injury prevention consultant Carole Fleming says ACC wants drivers to pay more attention to motorcycle riders and, in return, wants motorcyclists to be ‘seen’.

“We want to encourage drivers to use their rear view and wing mirrors more regularly and check their blind spots,” says Carole.

“We simultaneously want riders to ‘be seen’, wearing high visibility vests or brightly coloured stripes over their dark coloured jackets.

“Light coloured helmets are much easier to see than dark ones.”

In Tauranga alone, 50 per cent of motorcycle crashes involve another vehicle. Between July 2010 and June 2011, there were 38 incidents involving motorcycles which resulted in moderate to severe

injuries to the riders.

In January 2012 alone, 11 motorcycle riders have been injured in Tauranga.

The main risk has been identified around intersections, where 40 per cent of crashes occur.

“Motorcycle riders, even when wearing recommended protective gear, are much more vulnerable than car drivers. When a crash happens, the motorcycle rider is likely to receive serious injuries such as broken limbs, head and spinal injuries, which can often take a long time to heal, and for some, can result in permanent damage.”

The campaign runs for three months, during which ACC hopes to see a reduction in crashes.

Treasured art search begins The call is going out for art lovers wanting to sell pieces in Tauranga Sunrise Rotary Club’s annual charity art fundraiser.

The Treasured Art exhibition organiser Sally Morrison wants to hear from anyone with quality works by well-known professional artists for the club’s fundraiser sale.

Proceeds from the May sale go to Tauranga youth development programme Kiwi Can, which provides a life skills and values programme for five to 12-year-olds at primary and intermediate schools.

The organisers are aiming to raise $20,000 for the charity, the sum donated from each of the last two auctions.

Tauranga artist Peter Wallers is the exhibition’s feature artist – with about 10 of his personal collection of paintings

expected to go under the hammer for charity.

Peter, who paints mainly in oils, has been working as a professional artist for 40 years and regularly supports community fundraisers with his art. “It’s a great way to give back to the community,” says Peter.

Sally wants to hear from people with other Peter Wallers works for the sale.

“We are also looking for works by professional artists and also encourage anyone with quality art by known artists that is shifting homes to review their collection for works to sell.”

About 50 works are expected to be selected for sale in the three day exhibition.

“If you are changing homes or downsizing you might find you simply don’t have space for some of your work or people might just want to refresh their collection,” says Sally.

The artworks are sold on a 50 per cent commission or people may choose to donate their art.

The function will launch with a gala invitation opening at Ingham Sears Mercedes Benz in Mount Maunganui on May 24 and will open to the public for the following two days.

KiwiSaver is not a bank account I continue to be amazed that many people believe KiwiSaver is some type of bank account.

That many people still view this as being the case, is evidence our education system needs to include more about financial matters as soon as possible.

Let me clarify: KiwiSaver is not a bank account, it is a retirement investment.

To be fair, more often than not, people will refer to KiwiSaver as an account. The use of the word account has bank connotations, hence some misunderstanding. Financial education would help remove this misconception.

I think promoting the idea of saving through primary school banking, which still happens in some areas, is still a great idea. The children get used to saving and they get to watch their account balance increase over time. At intermediate and secondary school, you can extend this concept.

Cash flow management sometimes called budgeting should be compulsory in some form or another. From here, you can start to discuss investment and retirement.

Investing and saving are positive for our community and our young people, so why not spend some time on these areas. That way, we can avoid misunderstandings like people thinking KiwiSaver is a bank account of some description.

‘Students loans’ for orchardists?

Te Puke orchardists hit by the Psa crisis may be able to get a loan from the government under one option being considered by KVH. Kiwifruit Vine Health general manager John Burke says a key challenge facing growers is the cost of orchard recovery.

KVH is estimating ongoing costs to be $50,000-$60,000 per hectare (excluding interest on debt) for growers to re-graft vines and get back to a positive cash flow in the next three years.

As part of ongoing work to establish a clear recovery pathway for orchardists with Psa-infected Gold vines, KVH has appointed Lincoln University’s economics department to analyse Psa’s impact and any barriers to a recovery.

“We have been looking at the impediments for growers to get back on track and one of the biggest hurdles they face is raising the money,” says John.

He says this expense will be a struggle for some growers to cover – and could delay any recovery or lead to a loss of industry intellectual capital by forcing orchardists out.

“So it’s looking at how growers may get hold of that cash.”

John says one option KVH may ask the government, is to consider offering loans to help orchardists.

He says there could be a business case for some government assistance if KVH can show there will be significant attrition and delay in the recovery if orchardists cannot access this money.

“It would need to be something that would be repaid like a student loan – but if it provides this leg-up and if there is a really strong business case, we will certainly be talking to the government about this.”

John says Lincoln’s economic analysis is looking at this and where the $700m in debt among kiwifruit growers lies so they have a clear idea on the number of growers likely to face difficulties.

KVH has been having ongoing discussions with the banks to keep them fully informed on the situation.

David and Cloie Blackley, along with the farm staff, wish to give city-based youth a taste of what it’s like to work in the outdoors on their mixed beef, lamb and forestry farm in the Papamoa hills.

The livestock on the farm are high quality ex-stud Romney sheep, pure angus beef and fattening wagyu.

The students get hands-on experience with mustering, lambing, docking, sheering, stock movements, fencing, forest and pasture management.

The students are encouraged to attend the Summerhill A1 Youth Academy along with other students.

This course covers a huge range of topics and runs from March 11 to August 26 on a Sunday 9.30am to 2.30pm.

Most of the hands-on rural work is in the weekends and holidays, but there may be occasions where a day of regular school is required.

Improving the future of avocado crops

Avocado Industry Council chief executive Jen Scoular says it has been a “really tough season”.

“This was a year that growers were anticipating making some money; a lot of growers haven’t been getting a great return on their investment and this should have been a year when that return should have been very positive.

“Growers are saying we didn’t plan well enough; we should have been doing more new market development.

“At the moment people are saying ‘it’s broken – we need more sustainable returns’.”

Jen says the industry had anticipated the high record volume of fruit this season, which “we believed we’d planned for”.

The Australian forecast was down and exporters had planned for the Australian market to absorb the extra fruit from New Zealand.

“But the forecasters at the Australian end were inaccurate, so there was a lot of Australian fruit still in the market when New Zealand fruit arrived,” says Jen. “So we had an oversupply right from the beginning.

“In hindsight, we overestimated the amount of volume we thought the Australian market could take.”

Growers are looking at a return of about $10 a tray this season, compared with about $20 a tray last season – “albeit with twice as much volume” says Jen. The AIC is forecasting even bigger crops in the future and Jen says growers should be questioning whether exporters are going to develop new markets to take the avocados.

“And that’s a lot of new markets to find for our fruit.”

Developing new markets is hampered by the problem of irregular cropping.

‘Avocados: Boom or Bust’

is being presented by Avocado Industry Council technical manager Dr Henry Pak at Tauranga’s first Café Scientifique for 2012.

Henry will outline some of the issues facing the avocado industry and the research in progress, including

irregular cropping – where trees do not produce a viable crop every year – is one of the industry’s most problematic challenges.

Supported by the University of Waikato, Cafe Scientifique is a forum for debating science issues, where for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology.

Attention baby boomers – part two Last week we saw our 50s are a critical time where we start to see the effects of our previous health choices, but more importantly, set the scene for our health outcomes in the later part of our lives.

Once we hit middle age, we can no longer rely on the resilience of youth. We need to make the decisions that will determine the health of our later life.

One of my concerns is that health has become too symptom-focussed and we tend to view health as a collection of body parts or systems parts, rather than as a whole. I prefer a cellular biochemical view on health.

By that, I mean that people whose cell chemistry functions well, will have good health. Healthy cell function is entirely dependent on optimum intake of both essential nutrients, such as the 21 known essential minerals and all the vitamins, to a huge range of biologically active phytonutrients that protect our cells against free radicals.

One of the consequences of inadequate intakes or nutrient imbalances are the 70-plus diseases that are either caused by or supported by over production of inflammation.

Our immune system is responsible for turning on inflammation when we need to heal, but over production can actually create disease. People are

Residents invited to remember Bay of Plenty residents who have lost a loved one in the last 12 months are being invited to attend the Waipuna Hospice Remembrance Day.

Manager Trish Rae says every year in February they hold the day to remember those who have passed away. She says people who have lost loved ones in the last 12 months are invited, along with others who choose to continue to come along.

“As part of the service, all the little messages from the Christmas Tree remembrance appeal are popped into a little flax kete, blessed and buried on site.”

The day is being held on February 22, 7pm, at the Waipuna Hospice site in Te Puna.

CEO salaries comparisons There is a lot of controversy re the CEO of Christchurch city CEO receiving a $75,000 increase in salary.

In NZ councillors and the like are grossly overpaid for what they do.

In England elected officials carry out as many duties in many cases as a paid employee. My sister is a councillor in England and she works for the council every day, at times working from 9am till 10pm attending meetings and carrying out duties.

Now let’s look at a comparison of two councils one in England and Christchurch as an example here.

Please don’t dash about doing conversions here from pound to dollar that doesn’t work in these cases what they are paid in England stays in England.

A coffee here cost $4, in England it costs four pounds.

Christchurch has a population of 348,400. (Source: Statistics New Zealand Jan 2012) . I understand the CEO is paid $500 075.00 per annum.

Now let’s look for example at Buckingham which has a population of 500,000 and is grossly more complex than Christchurch hundreds of villages and small towns thousands of miles of road and a massive infrastructure. Here are the salaries for comparison and remember most of these people carry the duties of elected officials five days a week working anything from 8 to 12 hours per day.

The chief executive of Bucks County Council - that is the head of the paid service - earns £240,000 per annum plus £46,000 towards his pension.

The Leader of the Council, i.e. the head of the party in power, gets

£25,000 pa and nothing more this post is similar to a Mayor in NZ. The Chairman, a ceremonial role, gets £25,000 per annum. He does not get a chauffeur driven car unlike the District Chairman.

The chief of the District gets £137,000.

The leader gets £15,000 plus £5,000 as a member of the council.

The Chairman gets £10,000 extra on top of his basic members allowance of £5,000. The chairman also gets the use of a chauffeur driven car for ceremonial events plus £5,000 dress allowance.

I tend not to dwell on the past too much; or even remember it too well.

I wrote my first column here back in 2003 and I have no idea what it was about; probably some declaration of principles and a quick joke.

It’s lost as the hard drive it was on got hit by lightning.

Since then I’ve put down roughly – sometimes very roughly – 315,000 words, mostly about music, particularly that of a local variety; some about movies, books, grammatical quirks, or whichever tangential back-road happened to look interesting on the map that week. Spontaneity cannot be overrated. (I should know – I’ve practiced it enough…)

And I’d like to thank you both for reading.

Ha. Little joke there. I have absolutely no idea how many people read this column.

Someone does, and I assume more than two, otherwise I’d have long ago been quietly left propped in the corner of some dank drinking hole, another old newspaper hack lost to the rum.

I know folk read this because I get emails and I absolutely sincerely thank you for that.

The little corrections sent in to point out yet another possibly hangover-inspired brain-freeze on my part, or the many correspondents who email with information about upcoming events and interesting titbits from Tauranga’s entertainment world, really keep this column going (along with a sharp-eyed editor and several highly-paid lawyers).

Seriously though, I would like to remind everyone that anything you send to watusi@thesun.co.nz gets read and, nearly always, replied to.

Not everything gets into a column – there just isn’t that much space – but, as I say to bands if they ask advice about promotion: whenever you’re doing anything even

vaguely newsworthy send out information about it to everyone you can.

You may get nowhere at first, but at least your name will begin to be recognised, and sooner or later there’ll be a blank page and you’ll be there to fill it.

By the way – bands – simply posting a gig on your Facebook page isn’t enough.

Media folks will not trawl through social networking pages to find you.

You need to make contact with them, and you should.

I am happy for this column to be a shameless promotional resource for local bands and gigs because they deserve the space and readers want to know what’s happening.

Recently dormant gypsy jazz group Bonjour Swing, comprising Robbie Laven, Marion Arts, and their son Oscar Laven, have just finished recording an album along with young upright bass player Milan Wilshier.

The Flame, a collection of 15 songs and instrumentals by Marion and one petite waltz by Robbie, is yet to get a release date, but expect it sometime around Easter.

And, in case I forget next week, the Tauranga & Katikati Acoustic Music Festival takes place on Saturday, February 25 at 156 Works Road, from 10am until 9pm.

Heading the bill is Scottish duo Emily Smith and Jamie McLennan.

With that in mind, let me just throw out another comment to bands: make sure you’ve got some promo material ready in case you need it.

If you’re out playing gigs or recording you should already have a ‘one-sheet’.

That’s a short promo kit which lists the band members, says a little bit about each of them, and has a paragraph or two about the band’s history.

That’s all you need (plus a photo, which I can’t believe is even vaguely a problem in these days of hi-def cell phone cameras).

Don’t be lazy – chance favours the prepared mind.

Okay, enough of that.

Here’s a couple of snippets for the week.

Mixing her own and traditional material, Emily has been called ‘a Scottish Joni Mitchell’ and was named ‘Scots Singer of the Year’ at the Scots Trad Music Awards.

That’s pretty impressive stuff. Check her out at www.emilysmith.org Also worth seeing will be Sanders Alley Khan, a folk, roots and world music band.

With influences from Celtic, jazz, folk and blues traditions, the trio was a big hit at last year’s Auckland Folk Festival and should be a blast live.

There are also, of course, many locals playing.

Psychedelic soul music in town

Last September, Little Bushman and Electric Wire Hustle teamed up for two sell-out nights of vibrant psychedelic and soul music, with both bands and audiences enjoying it so much they decided to take it on tour.

These shows mark the final performances in New Zealand for Electric Wire Hustle this summer before they head onto Europe for six months, via a stop off in Australia and the USA. Little Bushman and EWH are playing at Brewer’s Bar on February 24. Tickets from www.cosmicticketing.co.nz

First of all, an apology. Last week’s ‘Pick of the Week’ – Texas Killing Fields – accidentally ended up with five stars. It should have been four. I liked it, but not quite that much. And I like this week’s pick a lot. It’s not a film with a plot particularly, or any action to speak of, but it has a rambling charm that makes for a very pleasant couple of hours.

The set-up is simplicity itself. Steve Coogan is invited by The Guardian newspaper to go on a restaurant tour of the North of England. He invites fellow comedian Rob Brydon along for company. Over the course of a week they go to six restaurants, look at the scenery, chat and Mercifully avoiding more Middle Eastern villains, The Double reignites the cold war when a Soviet assassin – long thought dead – appears to re-emerge and kill a Washington senator. CIA man Richard Gere reluctantly comes out of retirement and partners with young FBI expert Topher Grace. Ramping up the cleverness, the plot reveals a major twist after only half an hour, but there are more; an escalating circle of deception which, much like the ‘inner intensity’ of Gere’s mannered acting style, require a major suspension of disbelief to swallow. If you avoid thinking about the increasingly gaping plot holes it’s quite fun.

Damn fine Dubious

Stemming from the many improvisations between the two actors that occurred when they made Winterbottom’s Tristram Shandy, this is a delight. Who would have thought that two people talking could be such fun, but as they swap impersonations (Al Pacino, Michael Caine, Hugh Grant, Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins et al) and playfully bicker it’s just a pleasure to be along for the ride.

This was condensed from six half-hour television shows and the generous extras include pretty much everything that got cut along the way. Fantastic.

The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec opens in 1911 Paris where a wild yarn is about to unfold. Adele herself is an indomitable adventure writer, sort of a laconic cross between Tintin and Indiana Jones. We first meet her ‘borrowing’ a mummy from an Egyptian pyramid and planning to bring it back from the dead. As you do. Meanwhile a pterodactyl has hatched in the Paris museum and is causing chaos around town.

Directed by Luc Besson – his most rounded and enjoyable romp since The Fifth Element – this has a particular French charm and humour that brings to mind the likes of Amelie.

Kill List is a rather remarkable and very English film. Following Down Terrace, a kitchen sink gangster shocker, director Ben Wheatley goes to altogether stranger places. It opens with the same social realism as we find ex-soldier Jay struggling to adapt to home life. Fellow soldier Gal gets them both work as contract killers. But there are slowly-building hints – a growing sense of menace – that more is at play here and the film slowly morphs into a thriller and then something resembling The Wicker Man’s horror. It’s a very impressive piece of filmmaking, unsettling and original.

The Rose & Thistle Tavern Friday 24 –Keel

The war for a woman’s heart Chris Pine is his usual self, fast-talking, brash and excessively charming. Both of them embodying bits and pieces of the perfect Hollywood man, but who will she choose?

Directed by McG of Charlie’s Angels 2000’s reboot fame, the film’s action scenes are fast paced and explosionheavy, mixed with hilarious dialogue as Lauren struggles to make her choice, unaware these two men know each other. A must for rom-com lovers.

Laurie got his start in menswear at Hamilton’s department store at the bottom of Devonport Road after shifting over from Morrinsville at age 22. When the store closed, he moved on to Bay Outfitters in The Strand where worked for 15 years, climbing the ladder to become manager of the 14-member team.

Bay of Plenty area and it was a great place to work,” says Laurie.

When Bay Outfitters was sold to Warnock’s, he decided to move on and set up his own store in 1987.

With the help of his wife Colleen and son Tony, the Willow Street store has been a true family store.

Laurie’s decision to close follows tough trading during the last three years, compounded by many of kiwifruit orchardists cutting spending in more recent times. He will miss his many loyal customers, but is looking forward to more fishing.

For the third year, the competition is looking for anglers to bring in their catch of the day from Tauranga Harbour on February 19.

Starting from 6am, fishers have all day to get their best fish and bring them to be weighed between 3pm and 4pm, prize giving at 4.30pm.

There are three main categories; heaviest fish, average weight and mystery weight.

The maximum number of

fish to be weighed in is one per species. There is more than $4000 worth of prizes to be won, including great fishing gear sets from Kilwell, bikes from Rocket bikes and kayaks from Canoe and Kayak.

Best band in the land It’s not every day that you get to be entertained by the Popsicle Band, the coolest band in the land.

The band features some of New Zealand’s best loved musicians, including Slusher Cup on bass guitar, Sporty Ice on drums, Choc MC on vocals and Mini on guitar.

The good news for families, is the Popsicle Band is playing live at Baywave TECT Aquatic and Leisure Centre tomorrow – Friday, February 17 – from 10.30am to 4pm.

Student focus for new bus service A new bus service starts from the BOP Polytechnic’s Windermere campus next week as part of a number of timetable changes being introduced on February 13.

The Route 2 service now starts at Windermere, runs through Greerton and into town, creating a direct link between the Windermere Polytechnic site, the CBD and the Mount/Bayfair area. This provides better access to the polytechnic for students living in the Mount Maunganui and Papamoa areas.

With more than 3500 students expected at the Polytechnic’s Windermere campus on Monday, February 20, the new services will help ease traffic congestion and make it a lot easier for those living further afield to get to Polytechnic quickly says the polytechnic’s media

liaison Meg Jones.

“The Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is pleased to have worked in partnership with the council to provide a more efficient and expansive service to our staff and students,” says Meg. In other changes, the Maungatapu No 45 service, which includes stops in Te Hono Street, will cease.

Maungatapu passengers will in future have to rely on route 36, which passes through Maungatapu via Maungatapu Road on its way to and from Papamoa East via Bayfair and Palm Beach Plaza.

The Lakes Route 2 diversion and the Maungatapu bus are being withdrawn due to continued low use,” says Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s public transport sub-committee chair Councillor Doug Owens.

“For most users, either new or alternative routes are available.”

The changes arise from the annual performance review of bayhopper services and changing community needs.

“We review services each year with the aim of making the network more efficient and better accommodating our community’s needs,” says Doug. “Some new services are being added, others extended and some routes removed.”

As a result of strong use, the weekday frequency of route 60 from the CBD to St Andrew’s Drive via Cambridge Road, Brookfield, Bellevue, will double from every 60 minutes to every 30 minutes.

Remembrance of Grace for Aotearoa In an intimate setting of relationship, Jesus Christ took bread.

He broke it and gave thanks. Then gave it to those who were in close relationship with him. He said, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me”.

Remember also those that have gone before us that embraced the rich promises of God.

Do we want revival?

Do we need revival in NZ? Sadly today, the word ‘revival’ has been so misused, misapplied and misrepresented, that there is real confusion about what it actually means according to Scripture.

In many places, the word ‘revival’ has been used in place of ‘mission’ or ‘campaign’ – creating an understanding that revival is something that the Church arranges or organises and that God may or may not bless. There is also the understanding that revival simply refers to a great in-gathering of souls into the kingdom of God. So, what is revival?

James Buchanan, a Church Historian, defines revival as “the imparting of life to those who are dead and the imparting of health to those who are dying”.

Dr Edwin Orr defines revival as “a movement of the Holy Spirit bringing about a revival of New Testament Christianity in the Church of Christ and its related community”.

Brian Edwards, a student of revivals says “a true, Holy Spirit revival is a

The Father in heaven wants His sons and daughters to be revealed so our nation can say, “Let the weak say, I am strong. Let the poor say, I am rich because of what the Lord has done for me!”

As we remember and embrace this hour, I pray the heavenly Father will reveal His glory and cause a rising of passion to your heart.

state, relates to a move of God that revives the Church to a place of fervent love for Jesus, away from complacency and from careless Christianity, away from careless living that tolerates sin, into a place of holiness and reverence.

At the same time, the glory of the Lord that has departed the Church is restored and the presence and power of God is manifested, treasured and carefully guarded and God Himself comes and makes His habitation again amongst His people.
