World champions of synchronised silliness The whitebait season is underway this week and there’s been feverish activity in the RR camp, sharpening hooks and researching batter recipes.

Meanwhile, officials are warning people to clean their gear thoroughly to avoid the spread of nasties in the water, such as disease, pests and weeds.

Didymo is the big concern. As explained in a previous column, Didymo is a rapper from LA who has been causing a large amount of trouble in the South Island.

It’s a nasty invasive pest that we need to keep out of our clean rivers and lakes.

The answer is simple. The government should pass a law making it illegal to smoke didymo.

It’s worked with some other weeds. Suddenly you’d find that it would become in big demand, and losers nationwide would be clambering the riverbanks to collect it and burn it.

The upside? Some of the organised crime perpetrators would end up falling in, unable to swim in their black jeans and Megadeth hoodies, therefore saving the country in dole and sickness benefits.

A win-win situation.

They’re tricky little buggers to catch, and not only do you need very small hooks, but a light touch on the rod and reel, because the bites are very hard to detect. Still, when you get a big one on, you know all about it. Strap yourself into the game chair and hang on.

I’m looking forward to seeing that TV fishing guy jump out of a helicopter and wrestle one. Anyone can do that

Meanwhile the Olympics games are over and those of us who have been wasting away the small hours under a rug in front of the TV can finally get a proper night’s sleep.

Never before can we remember such a good turnout of athletes from the Bay, or such high success rate. Of course we also claim Mahe along with the Bay contingent, since he was schooled locally and his Mum lives here. Plus Sarah in the BMX and Lisa in the kayak, from the Eastern Bay. Our whitewater lot put up a good performance, with Mike putting up a great effort and let’s not forget Ella paddling for the Cook Islands, who is a Tauranga paddler in disguise.

A fine effort all round, just getting there is a triumph in itself.

The champions of tomorrow eat bread baked today.

It was unfortunate that the RR team did not get to compete in the Olympics. It seems that due to a clerical blunder, the NZ Olympic committee didn’t have us entered.

Which is a great shame, because our synchronised swimming ability is world class.

We would have won outright, because all the rest of the synchronised swimmers are clearly on drugs.

There’s no way you could have those looks on your face without it.

Our synchronised swimming routine was well practised through the winter, when on several occasions the duck punt was swamped or the bung left out, and the lads were truly in sync, with the “sink” part of synchronised well-rehearsed.

Convincing mincing

Same with the walking. Unfortunately our team was left out of the entries. We’d have won that by default also, since the rest all look like they’re cheating. Or taking drugs. No way could you waddle like that, unless you had some concealment in a body cavity.

We do have a message for those in the weirdest ever sport. You are not fooling us.

This is just running slow, with a bit of duck waddle thrown in, to make it look convincing.

You are supposed to keep a foot on the ground at all times – heeling and toeing, I think the commentator called it. However in this age of freeze frame, My-Sky technology, we can analyse every step you take… and guess what? You have been running!

Not only does this sport look silly, but it’s full of cheats. The winners are simply slow runners, pretending to walk.

Munching metal

Finally a message to those who insist on biting their medals.

This stems from an ageold ritual, when those in possession of gold coins used to test the softness of the metal. If their teeth did not make a mark on the coin, it was deemed too hard to be gold, and therefore a fake.

These days, the biting of the gold medal is still customary, with about a quarter of those recipients at London seen biting them.

These days however, the gold medals are not 100 per cent gold, as in the old days.

They apparently only contain about 1 per cent gold, so the metal will not dent. It is purely a quaint old custom.

As for silver and bronze medallists having a chomp: this is a pointless exercise and they clearly do not understand the history. Silver and bronze are both too hard to be impressioned by teeth.

district plan to create transmission line buffer zones.

Independent commissioner David Hill, appointed by council to decide the issue, has said there should be no rules in the council’s district plan in relation to buffer corridors on highvoltage transmission lines.

That’s a decision, in Transpower’s view, which fails to give effect to the National Policy Statement on Electricity Transmission, which, Transpower says, is Parliament’s clear direction on how the Resource Management Act should be applied to this issue.

Chief executive Patrick Strange says: “Without rules around what development can occur under our lines, we put at risk our ability to maintain the grid for New Zealanders.”

Those who objected to Transpower’s bid have hailed the findings as a victory for common-sense. However, the submitters were also aware that decision could be appealed.

Among them Hor-

ticulture New Zealand president Andrew Fenton, who suspects the issue won’t die.

He describes the decision as a win for landowners in the Western Bay. Estimates put the national total for land potentially affected by buffer zones at 48,000 hectares.

“This decision shows that an SOE can’t run rough shod over landowners’ rights and that it needs to be more co-operative and consultative.”

In his decision the commissioner said that proposed rule changes to council’s district plan were “not the most appropriate way of achieving the objective, nor would they be particularly efficient or effective”.

The changes would have required landowners to pay for resource consents to get permission to carry out earthworks or construct buildings or structures within a designation zone either side of the power lines.

Steve Bailey of Bay of Plenty Federated Farmers says he is pleased common-sense has prevailed. Federated Farmers had earlier described the buffer zones as `a land grab’ and said Transpower should negotiate with landowners individually.

“In many ways this was a test case and we would like to see other district councils adopt Western Bay’s stance or better.”

Child abuse big issue in WBOP Child Youth and Family in Tauranga has received 450 notifications of suspected child abuse cases from staff at Tauranga Hospital in the last 12 months.

This represents about 10 per cent of the total number of notifications received by CYF’s Tauranga Office, according to information from Bay of Plenty District Health Board.

“Child abuse and neglect statistics for Tauranga Hospital over the last three

years show we have approximately 10 children admitted each year for child abuse related injuries or neglect,” says Tauranga Hospital community paediatrician Dr David Jones.

There are a number of factors surrounding the circumstance of child abuse and David says one of the major problems is domestic violence.

“For parents and caregivers, we know that domestic violence is a major problem. Where parents live in domestically violent relationships, the risk of physical abuse of children is greatly increased.

“Parents often think that their children don’t know what’s happening; the reality is they do.

“The emotional impact of this can leave physiological scars that may affect their child for life.”

Other risk factors include parents who are socially isolated and have little support. Parents who have been abused as children or come from dysfunctional families unfortunately can be at higher risk of abusing their own children.

“While most abused children do not go on to be abusers as adults, the parenting style they experienced as children may be repeated on their own kids,” says David.

“Other important risk factors include parental mental health problems and parents who are very young. Alcohol and drug use can also be a problem.

“If a parent is struggling to have their own needs met, they may struggle to meet the needs of their child.”

He says poverty and other social stresses on parents, such as poor housing, unemployment and large family size, can also be important risk factors.

“What is important to remember in any discussion about risk factors is that whilst they increase the probability that abuse may occur, they do not mean abuse will occur.

“Breaking the cycle of violence is vital and recognition is a key first step.” - Dr David Jones.

“There are many families I know that live under the most difficult of circumstances, yet do a wonderful job raising their kids.”

As a society, we need to seriously examine the drivers of the risk factors described, says David.

“There is clearly no quick fix.

Diving into the past The Te Puke Fire Brigade is turning the tables on the community by asking for its help in gathering information ahead of its centenary next year.

On October 10, 2013, the brigade will celebrate 100 years in service.

Chief fire officer Glenn Williams says they are planning events to celebrate the occasion and would like information about the brigade’s past.

“We are using a number of media outlets to get the information out to former brigade members and the public to inform them of the weekend’s activities which include, other than the meeting on the Thursday, registration and a get-together at the station on the Friday night, October 11.”

Glenn says they plan to have a parade followed by a farewell on the Sunday of that weekend.

“The brigade has been working on a centenary book for the last few years now to record the brigade’s history.

“We are also asking past members and the public to put forward any old memorabilia or photographs of the brigade’s activities.”

Glenn says the brigade is an integral part of the community and responds to many other emergencies such as disasters, medical emergencies and animal rescues.

He says it would be great if anyone who has information about the brigade’s history could contact them.

Jail time for armed offender

The Tauranga man who sparked an armed offenders call out in Te Puna will spend the next 21 months in jail. Vaughn Wilson, 28, pleaded guilty to numerous charges including possession of a sawn-off shotgun, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of cannabis during a previous court appearance.

Wilson appeared in the Tauranga District Court this week, where Judge Thomas Ingram sentenced him to 21 months in prison.

Wilson was the subject of an Armed Offenders Squad callout in Te Puna on June 18 after he failed to appear in court on unrelated firearms charges.

Stern warning for teen

A Te Puke teenager has narrowly avoided going to jail after his mother convinced the judge she could keep him in line at home.

Rhys Malossi, 17, appeared in the Tauranga District Court this week for sentencing on two counts of assault and possession of a weapon.

The charges stem from an incident earlier in the year where Malossi brandished a knife at a person while attempting to steal a car. Police say the teen also stole a car in Te Puke and led police on a joyride through the town, ending in a crash in Welcome Bay. Malossi pleaded guilty to the charges during a separate court appearance. Judge Thomas Ingram says the teen has a prolific history of offending and first started coming before the court in 2001.

Judge Ingram sentenced Malossi to 18 months home detention and 200 hours community work.

Candy striped party suits designed for the Wellington Sevens rugby tournament are this week lending their flashing lights and bells to highlight Kiwi Rail’s Rail Safety Week.

The Rail Safety Week campaign is aimed at reducing the amount of trespassing and improving pedestrian safety around the rail network, with the slogan “Use your brain – tracks are for trains”.

Since January, nine people have died while trespassing on railway lines, including a man who died on the tracks near Ngatai Road, Tauranga on August 2.

The actors and the costumes add light relief to a serious message.

People have been killed on the railway tracks in Tauranga at both sites the actors and the costumes showed up at on Tuesday – at Matapihi, and on The Strand.

“Our message is to use your brains, focus on what you are doing,” says Jenni Austin from KiwiRail.

“The train drivers can’t stop. By the time they see someone step out in front of the train, it’s too late to do anything except hit the horn and lean on the brakes.”

It takes a fully laden train moving at speed about 1km to stop, says Jenni. Trains can’t swerve, and they are travelling faster than they look.

“Use your heads, take care of yourself at the crossings.

“The other message for the young ones is, don’t be distracted.

Turn off the MP3 players, turn the hoodies back, take the time to have a good look and focus on what they are doing.”

Trespassing on rail tracks is the leading cause of railway related deaths in New Zealand. Since 2000, 147 pedestrians have died on railway tracks, of which 126 were classified as trespass.

Trespassing includes taking short cuts down or across tracks; using tracks as a footpath between stations; loitering around railway property; and committing acts of vandalism in the rail corridor. It is illegal and punishable by a fine of up to $10,000.

Rail Safety Week runs from August 13 to 19 and is coordinated by KiwiRail and the Chris Cairns Foundation.

Zoe Mayhew and Brittany Peagran will shave their heads in September to help fundraise for child cancer.

Students shave heads for cancer Losing their hair will be a small sacrifice for Otumoetai College students Zoe Mayhew and Brittany Peagran, who are shaving their hair in September to help fundraise for CanTeen.

Both girls didn’t hesitate to show their support for the cause because of the major impact the disease has had on them and their families.

Zoe, 17, became a member of CanTeen four years ago after she lost her two-year-old brother Archie Notman to cancer.

Brittany, 18, volunteered as a CanTeen member when cancer claimed the life of her grandfather.

Zoe, last year elected president of CanTeen Tauranga, started fundraising in May this year, and advises people to appreciate life.

“I tell people not to complain about their lives because quite often there is someone worse off then them.”

She says if you lose a loved one to cancer, they don’t grow back like your hair will. The girls have organised a school concert during lunchtime on September 28, which students can watch while the pair have their heads shaved by Brittany’s hairdresser.

Zoe’s goal is to fundraise $5000, with Brittany hoping to collect $2500 before the lunchtime event.

CanTeen believes the best people to support young people living with cancer are cancer survivors or those going through similar experiences.

Diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma in October 2009, former Mount Maunganui College student Haley Thomas, 20, says although everyone goes through their own journey, holding your family and friends close is important.

“It’s having that support system behind you.

“Make sure you advocate for yourself and stay positive. Positivity is amazing.”

Rena Mercedes auction for kids’ benefit From front cover The wreck of the Rena has delivered a second bounty for the Child Cancer Foundation - a 2003 Mercedes C200 Kompressor car salvaged from a container taken off the wrecked ship.

In May, the CCF auctioned one of the ship’s lifeboats, donated to the foundation by the owners and salvors.

Like the Rena lifeboat, the car will be auctioned on TradeMe with the auction opening today.

The car is on view at Safeway Auto Auctions on Totara Street, which has provided a location for the Mercedes to be viewed leading up to, and during, the auction.

The auction will run for two weeks.

The organisation is overwhelmed by the generosity of those who have helped make the auction possible, says CCF fundraising and business development manager, Delwynne Hahunga.

“The Rena disaster had a huge effect on the Bay of Plenty, threatening wildlife and fishing waters as well as the local economy. We are so thankful for the enthusiasm and willingness of local businesses who want the car to go to a good cause, particularly Vero Marine Insurance which donated the car for auction.

“As you’d expect, the Mercedes did suffer some damage from the incident but Mount Maunganui Collision Repairs kindly took care of panel work on each side of the car. Ingham-Sears, the

Mercedes-Benz specialists at the Mount, did some other minor repairs and along with Tauranga Vehicle Certifiers, ensured that the car meets New Zealand road standards.”

The car has been insured until the point of sale by Bay Insurance Brokers, which arranged cover with New Zealand Insurance.

The car was being exported to Sri Lanka when the Rena struck Astrolabe Reef on October 5, 2011. It remained high and dry in a container load of personal effects. The car, now valued at $15,000, was insured, but the personal possessions in the same container weren’t.

The insurers paid out on the car, and the salvors were able to return the other property.

Striking design Adorning a fluorescent dress made entirely from Perspex and strutting to the tune of Jesse J’s Laser Light may intimidate some people, but one Papamoa teenager can’t wait to hit the catwalk.

Papamoa College student Krystal Mitschak is heading to Rotorua this week to compete in the Wearable Creationz competition, the only Tauranga entrant and youngest in her category in the national show.

Using materials sourced from her stepfather’s Papamoa business CTS Plastics, the 15-year-old, with help from her mother and nana, has created a Charleston-style dress she hopes will attain her a winning spot in the corporate division.

“In the corporate division, everything has to be made out of the products the company produces. I wanted something bright; the dress is basically a mirror and the train is pink and yellow.”

“The way the lasers hit the Perspex is striking.”

Krystal has spent the last eight months creating the cocktail dress with neckpiece and off-the-shoulder strap, made entirely from Perspex.

“We started drawing things and playing around with different designs in February.

“Because it is made out of Perspex, we couldn’t really shape it, so we made an underdress. Then each individual piece was cut, sanded and glued on.”

This is not Krystal’s first trip to the Wearable Arts awards.

Last year she competed in the youth section and enjoyed it so much she was again inspired to enter the 2012 awards.

“I competed last year in the youth category and there were some amazing garments, and on the way home from that down the runaway during the show, which runs from August 16-18. show we discussed entering in the corporate division and we “I’m quite excited and nervous. Backstage has a great atmosphere, everywanted to make it out of Perspex.” one’s really excited getting ready.”

Lighting up the stage with colour Arts and culture come alive at Otumoetai Intermediate next week with the school’s annual showcase production at Baycourt theatre.

The show, staged on Wednesday and Thursday, will include performances by the school’s choir, bands, kapa haka group, dancers and talent quest participants.

Event organiser Morgan Lewis says it is a showcase of the best of the school’s artistic and cultural group performances.

“It’s a great way to show off the great work being done in the school’s arts academies and provides the opportunity for children to participate in a production at Baycourt with all the bells and whistles.”

Visual arts teacher Karen Patten says the colourful wearable art costumes, which had been designed around the theme ‘Light up the stage’, would be among the show’s many highlights.

Paddling upstream Forget about a serene paddle along a quiet creek, when Tauranga Boys’ College kayaker Cole O’ConnorStratton had his first taste of the sport, it was straight into white water.

Talk to the Year 13 student now about those first experiences four years ago and you can hear the excitement in his voice.

“It was pretty fun even though I was getting pretty smashed up going down the river. I guess it was the mixture of the nerves and the excitement, the adrenaline of kayaking that I really loved.”

It is this passion that has taken him a long way in a short time. He recalls starting off at the college as a Year 9 student and training a lot, quickly mastering the basics and continuing to push himself to tackle harder stretches of white water.

In January he is bound for the Youth Olympics in Penrith, where the competition is held on the man-made Sydney Olympic Games white water course.

After closely following Mike Dawson, Luuka Jones and Ella Nicholas in their canoe slalom at the Olympic Games, the highly driven 17-year-old is even more determined to paddle to the top of the sport.

A year after he started kayaking Cole made the national development team, which included an annual training camp and racing at Australian national competition.

Cole raced at the World Junior Championships in Wisconsin last month where he finished 15th in a highly competitive field of 49 in the junior K1 class.

“I just missed out on doing a lot better because I hit a gate. It was just one tiny mistake.”

Combining the extra time it cost him to manoeuvre out of the gate and the penalty, this small mistake cost him four seconds. Cole says he

was ‘pretty gutted’ at the time, but looking back at the footage realised he was actually ahead of the winner on time when it happened.

“That’s pretty encouraging. It’s just made me even hungrier to win.”

Similar to Mike Dawson he combines his slalom racing with a love for extreme kayaking. Whenever it pours heavily he heads off with friends for the thrill of kayaking flood-swollen rivers and down roaring waterfalls (his personal record is a 20m waterfall). Every other day he trains for three hours on and off the water to help him prepare for Sydney’s Youth Olympics.

Buoyed on by Burling Buoyed on by the success of Peter Burling winning a silver medal in sailing’s 49er class in Weymouth, England, Tauranga’s Alex Hart is aiming for the top boardsailing across the channel in the youth world championships.

Sixteen-year-old Alex, current under 17 male national champion, is determined to continue the success he had placing fourth at the New Caledonia Youth Nationals last year. It was a major improvement from his 53rd placing at the world championships in San Francisco last year.

While the field was smaller, Alex puts much of his success down to intensive training during the winter period, which helped him improve dramatically.

He has taken a similar approach going into the Bic Techno 293 world championships in the Netherlands, which started earlier this week, maintaining a high training schedule to with four sessions on the water most weeks.

Along with training around Tauranga’s waters he has also been going to Auckland regularly for coaching by former champion Bruce Kendall.

“I stayed with him in the holidays when I spent a lot of time preparing for this competition.”

The Mount Maunganui College Year 11 student admits to falling off a few times since he began boardsailing but says it is all part of the learning process.

While Alex won’t be able to compete in boardsailing at the Olympics, after the recent decision to drop the sport, he got a taste of the excitement at

prospects in the huge fleet of top board sailors, which includes 150 in his under 17 category, saying he hopes to be competitive and is determined to do better than last year, learn ‘heaps’ and have a good time.

Perfect stable mate for Skyhawk The Royal New Zealand Air Force A4K Skyhawk which takes pride of place in Classic Flyers’ aviation museum is about to get some company.

An Aermacchi MB-339, gifted to the museum by the RNZAF, will arrive from Ohakea on Friday, October 24, ahead of its grand unveiling on October 28. Classic Flyers NZ management board chairman David Love says the aircraft will still be flyable, but will require reassembly under strict Civil Aviation Authority standards. The Aermacchi is the aircraft on which Skyhawk pilots’ were trained before graduating to the operational aircraft and, as such, the two planes should be seen as stable mates.

David says a spares package will be acquired to enable future flight, but that getting the aircraft in the air remains a long term project.

“For now we are happy to get the aircraft to start up to taxi standard and produce a fitting display to complement the current build of the A4 Skyhawk diorama,” says David.

As a charitable trust, Classic Flyers will require additional funds to assist in the overall costs of acquiring, rebuilding and displaying the aircraft and the museum is appealing to the community and businesses to assist.

“People who donate to the project will have appropriate privileges in viewing the aircraft and as friends of Classic Flyers.”

Whilst the Royal New Zealand Air Force has gifted the aircraft, there is a charge of $10,000 plus GST to prepare the aircraft for the move. The Taurangabased Legacy Foundation has come forward with $10,000 for the base cost to enable the acquisition and to honour the gift, the main hanger housing the aircraft will be renamed the Legacy Jet Centre.

“Classic Flyers and the Legacy Trust, in their very different ways, are dedicated to increasing the attractiveness of the Bay as a place to work and play,” says David.

“Since Greg Brownless gifted his funeral business to the people of Tauranga with the formation of The Legacy Foundation the amount of donations to organisations has been extraordinary and has enabled the provision of a vast array of amenities and facilities for the city and environs that otherwise would not have come to fruition. We feel honoured the foundation should feel we are worth the major grant that has been donated.”

David says the Aermacchi will make a fine addition alongside the Skyhawk and Hawker Hunter – which is the fastest aeroplane operating in New Zealand and the only one capable of breaking the sound barrier.

“With the Hunter, the Skyhawk and now the Aermacchi all in one hanger together with our other exhibits, we feel the title of The Legacy Jet Centre is truly appropriate and look forward to a continued relationship with The Legacy Trust and its parent organisation, the Acorn Foundation, which also does so much for the city.”

A total of 18 Aermacchi MB-339s were bought by the Government as advanced flying trainers in the early 1990s to replace the BAC Strikemaster fleet which had been purchased in the early ’70s.

and stick. They are equipped with seven weapon station hardpoints to provide the capability to handle air-to-ground training munitions and integration with the latest targeting pods.

David says in 2001 the New Zealand Government removed the RNZAF air combat capability by cancelling the purchase of 28 F16 aircraft and disbanding the Number 2 and 75 squadrons. This meant the Number 14 Aermacchi squadron was shut down.

In 2008, the Defence Minister expressed the desire to return to service the 17 remaining Aermacchi trainers to supplement army and navy operations, but any decision was put on hold pending the planes’ potential sale.

American company Draken International has since successfully bid for nine Aermacchi, with eight others allocated to New Zealand museums.

Protected tree relief at last For those ratepayers who have been confounded by council’s tree bylaws, relief is now at hand.

Some nine or 10 years ago staff drove around town selecting significant trees for council protection, regardless of who owned them.

They then placed some 1800 or 1900 trees on a protection register.

Of course it was all done legally but there were many ratepayers who missed these legal niceties and the first they knew

about this ‘protection’ was when they tried to do anything with their tree and were denied.

You could of course cough up $750 deposit for a resource consent application to trim or cut it down.

Your own tree! This is the stuff of dictatorship. So some of us set about dismantling this anarchy and it’s taken some five years.

There are still about 300 trees on the register and most of them are council owned. In my opinion, if a privately owned tree is protected for public benefit then the onus and cost of tree management

should lie with those doing the protection. In this case that means ratepayers/council. Costs should be allocated to this activity and ratepayers can then judge the worth of this protection. It’s certainly not the tree owner’s responsibility to be dictated to by council.

Historically tree protection was a wheelbarrow being pushed by tree huggers and those with socialist leanings. This led to intrusion into people’s rights and caused significant grief and expense. So if you are one of those awaiting protected tree relief, phone city hall’s James Danby for advice.

Leigh Auton is now officially Tauranga’s new CEO. Leigh’s salary is a complete package of $340,000. That is, no add-ons, like car, super, etc.

That can be considered either an investment or cost.

Leigh says the tasks we have set for him (Key Performance Indicators or KPIs in techno-speak) should take 8-12 months.

Interesting times ahead

I had a meeting with Leigh and there are some interesting times ahead as he presents options to the council to take Tauranga forward. Council has discussed more sharing of service with Western Bay. The prospect of developing on the success of bulk buying through the BOP Local Authority Shared Services (BOPLASS) into policy and regulatory matters is an obvious step forward. Amalgamation of many services whilst leaving the political wings alone is a sensible proposition to begin with. We didn’t get the savings that were promised in the last political amalgamation between Tauranga, Mount and Papamoa and Auckland’s Super City, contrary to Mayor Len Brown’s claims, has solved few problems and created many more in my view.

From my experience, shifting an urban politician onto rural matters can be counter-productive and, yes, yes, vice versa of course. Smaller numbers sitting around the political table is more effective too. Our council is more effective with 11 elected members than it ever was with 15 elected members.

An interesting workshop on how to approach a review of Library Services - where ideas can be discussed in a non-threatening environment.

I noted the daily print media managed to get along, no doubt sniffing blood on the carpet. Staff will coordinate the discussion points and bring back some

An interesting presentation from Harry Wilson of NZ Transport Agency (NZTA). Government provides just under $3 billion a year to run the land transport system - more than just roads. For example, they pay the police $300 million. I was delighted to learn a new techno-speak word: hypothecation, which means that money can only be spent on what it is collected for.

At full council we saw reports from ratepayer funded organisation. Export NZ receives $48,896 for handling our sister city connection. This arrangement was shifted from a cultural and educational base to a business-oriented association about five years ago.

Contrary to urban myth there are no ratepayer funded junkets for councillors. Only the Mayor has his air fare paid.

Visitor information is now handled by Tourism BOP and receives $285,399 of their total budget. This is down from $404,064 in 2004/05 when council provided the service. Leigh Auton, new CEO, requested some $60,000 in resourcing for his reorganisation review.

A new secure boat park is going ahead at Sulphur Point. There are 76 spaces available at an annual rental of around $1650. This is a self-funding operation.

Ring council’s property division if you would like to book a space. It is timed to open pre-Christmas and demand will be high once it’s able to be seen. As they say – beat the rush.

Get out there for the best fishing yet!

Western Bay of Plenty recreational fishers should get motivated and get out there.

blasted by flotillas of barracouta had reasonable success. The two anglers landed eight tarakihi, six snapper, one cod, and one John Dory.

Our Papamoa kontiki veteran brought in eight snapper in one set at the change of light. All the baits were successful, but the best of all was slimy mackerel, and the best distance out was between 1700 metres to 1900 metres offshore.

The Pukehina Beach contact got three snapper with his first set, and two sharks and a stingray on his second.

The next best day was Saturday when, Brett Keller (Manutere) in the Middle Ground despite a decline in the weather, found it was still a decent day’s fishing with some getting their tarakihi limit, and others near.

Pukehina kayakers out about 2 kilometres in 20 metre depth water were getting good snapper up to around 5-6kg, and good tarakihi.

The first to discover the abundance and availability of tarakihi was Arch McTainsh (Enterprise) early last week in the Middle Ground, when all the anglers had their tarakihi limit by 10.30am.

Biting back IN THE BAY

The tarakihi have moved in, and there are more than plenty of them available.

There are still some good sized snapper around too.

Most of the very best fishing was last Friday, including: Russ Hawkins (Fat Boy) found a Middle Ground spot where the fishing was absolutely ‘fantastic, full-on, unbelievable!’. Within an hour the five anglers, all with different baits, had 100 tarakihi, a few snapper, and trevally.

Garth Le Lievre (Deepstar) also in the Middle Ground found there were tarakihi to burn - just heaps of tarakihi.

Transport potpourri Of my day-to-day responsibilities in Government, being Associate Minister of Transport keeps me busiest.

In the past week that has been particularly true as I’ve announced the imminent commencement of alcohol interlocks for vehicles, been involved in Rail Safety Week and presented the first commercial jet boat licences ever in New Zealand.

An alcohol interlock is a device similar to a breathalyser that is connected to a vehicle’s starting system. Before the vehicle can be started, the driver must provide a breath sample. If the analysed result is higher than the pre-programmed breath-alcohol level, the vehicle will not start. Interlocks in New Zealand are starting from 10 September and will be effectively set for a zero limit.

District Council looks very likely to meet the same fate.

The submission process was always going to be a farce. The single plan with a single option of ‘like it or lump it’ could never be the voice of 30,000 people. To add insult to injury, they then asked why. This question is well known to every parent held to ransom by their five year old.

There were more than 90 replies with only two clear cut approval responses.

Judges will, from that date, be able to require serious or repeat drinkdrivers to have alcohol interlock devices fitted to their vehicles.

Following a mandatory three month disqualification (during which no driving is allowed), offenders given an interlock disqualification will be able to apply for an alcohol interlock licence, which will restrict them to driving a vehicle with an interlock device fitted. Offenders will bear the cost of fitting and monitoring the interlocks.

In addition, from 10 September a ‘zero alcohol’ licence sanction will also be available, which will require drivers to maintain a zero alcohol limit for a fixed period of three years.

The zero alcohol licences will be issued to drivers given a ‘zero alcohol’ disqualification by the courts, as well as to those who have served an alcohol interlock disqualification and have been approved to exit the interlock programme.

These measures are part of a concerted effort to tackle the serious harm caused by drink-driving, which includes a zero blood alcohol limit for all drivers under the age of 20 and a doubled maximum penalty

for drink or drugged driving causing death.

The reckless actions of those who drink too much and get behind the wheel remain a cause of many road deaths and injuries.

The alcohol interlocks disqualification will help stop them from re-offending and make the roads safer for everyone.

Off track

When I launched Rail Safety Week on Monday I made it clear that this year’s focus is on raising pedestrian awareness about the dangers around rail tracks and crossings.

Indeed, trespassing on rail tracks is the biggest cause of railway related deaths in our country. In the last decade 97 pedestrians have died while trespassing instead of using the proper walkways and crossings.

Frankly, if you are not on a proper walkway, crossing or at a station, what you are doing at rail tracks is almost certainly illegal and, more importantly, very dangerous.

The experts tell me trains are quieter and faster than most of us realise. In addition, while they are efficient and safe, they cannot stop readily. As the slogan for the week says, “use your brain, tracks are for trains”.

Managing risk

My final transport task for the week was to hand over some commercial jet boat licences to operators in Queenstown under a scheme I announced last month. The licences and ongoing competency checks are designed to improve compliance and safety, as well as safeguard the reputation of one of New Zealand’s most iconic outdoor adventure activities.

While the inherent risks of jet boating provide the ‘thrill’ factor that attracts passengers from all over the world, the introduction of the jet boat driver licence and competency checks gives passengers and the wider public added assurance that these risks are being managed appropriately.

Blaze destroys Ohauiti crime pad Police are investigating a suspicious fire that ripped through an Ohauiti house on Wednesday morning.

Firefighters were called to the two-storey home in a rural area of Ohauiti Road at about 5.15am on Wednesday where they found the house ablaze.

The fire continued to burn until about 9am, almost completely destroying the property.

Although the exact cause of the fire is not yet known police are treating the blaze as a suspected arson.

The house has been on the police radar since it was involved in a drug

raid in 2010.

The house was subject to a courtordered restraining order under the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act and was under the control of the Official Assignee.

Detective Logan Nicholas says the asset was obtained through criminal activity.

Police would like to speak with anyone who has seen any suspicious behaviour in the area in the last few days. Anyone with information about the fire can call Tauranga Police on 07 577 4300 or anonymously on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Car smashes into Salvation Army store A slip of the foot ended with a car crashing through the window of the Salvation Army family store in Greerton Road on Wednesday.

There were seven adults and six children in the charity store when a four-door sedan crashed through the double window, sending glass flying through the shop after the driver’s foot slipped and hit the accelerator instead of the brake pedal.

No one was injured in the incident but people in the store did get a fright.

Matua slip assessed as safe Residents of Rewarewa Place in Matua, who evacuated after a slip threatened the safety of their property this week, have been allowed to return home.

The slip, about 20 metres high and up to 40 metres wide, has been deemed safe by Tauranga City Council engineers and independent GeoNet engineers.

City development manager Paul Baunton says loose soil may be washed away with the predicted rainfall for the next 10-15 days, but there is no lingering threat to people

or property.

The slip was reported to police on Tuesday. It is believed to have formed during heavy rain earlier in the week.

With the establishment of the Auckland Super City, New Zealand now has more than 50 per cent of its population with a unitary structure for local governance.

Despite the naysayers, the sky has not fallen in, and in fact there is strong evidence that serious savings in bureaucratic expenditure has resulted, and it is time that it happened in the Western Bay of Plenty.

District Council to run separate administrations, and the amalgamation needs to include the Western end of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council too.

Some will argue that we need a Baywide Coastal Unitary Council (from Waihi Beach to east of Opotiki), but this is just a distraction, and not realistic. The Western Bay already has a population of more than 160,000 and this will continue to grow – projected to reach 198,000 by 2021 and 284,000 by 2051. Regional council staff numbers currently top 288, and with 58.3 per cent of the population residing in Western Bay, we can assume 168 of them work on Western Bay regional issues. Add the 505 Tauranga City staff, plus 162 from Western Bay, and we can easily see rationalisation reducing total staff by at least one third (maybe by half ) including two of the three CEOs (total current salaries of the CEOs alone is around $950,000) – so what is the downside? I don’t think there is any.

The rise, and fall, of a champion The water jump was my downfall, and so like Valerie, I went from tears of pain, to grins of joy.

There were drugs involved as well. Really, where is the problem? Miss/Mr Upchuck was only abiding by the theory that they would not make them unless they were good for you.

But I digress. The boss had to make a visit with me to Joerg the Mobile Vet, as I fell at the last hurdle. The bloody water jump did me in again.

It all started with the boss putting me through my paces Saturday morning.

His training regime is Eastern European! All was going swimmingly until we reached the last obstacle, a huge lake.

Seeing two black swans on the water, the event changed from the dogathlon to my main event, swan chasing!

I get so engrossed chasing these pests, time has no meaning, so when I started to realise that the noise and abuse, coupled with hand signals, from the old bald headed dude in the second row, was actually the boss wanting me to get out of the water, I was rather exhausted. So getting me back to the kennel and being dried was a cool option, but after an hour,

my second best leg joint began to swell (like a certain athlete’s trousers) and a further few hours later I could not walk. It was a hoot though having the boss carry me out in the pouring rain to go to the toilet.

Sunday morning enough was enough, so a call was placed to Joerg, the Mobile Vet in Totara Street the Mount. He is the man!

The day progressed like this: examination, injection, sleep, and apparently pictures were taken, wake up, wobbly still on my pins, and then discover a green bandage where my leg used to be. Oh joy. But all is good now, Flo is under control (yeah, right) and the green skin comes off Wednesday morning, sweet!

Now a verdict has not been reached on what actually occurred, but Joerg reckons my leg had been used by a stinging thingy as a dart board. Could have been a hornet, could have been a whitetail spider. Who knows, but it sure hurt, so I am with ya, Val! Now I have to mention the way I was treated by Joerg and his crew at the Mobile Vet Centre, simply superb, so many thanks team from the bossman and me, and if any of you canines out there need to visit a hospital, Mount Mobile Vets is the place to be.

White gold even harder to get The whitebait season got underway this week with plenty of Bay OF Plenty whitebaiters braving less than ideal conditions in pursuit of the New Zealand delicacy.

The season began on Wednesday, August 15 and will run until November 30.

The Department of Conservation manages the fishery and is promoting measures to sustain whitebait populations.

The department has produced a guide for whitebaiters,

explaining the legal regulations, which is available from DOC in Tauranga or online at www.doc.govt.nz/whitebait Biodiversity ranger Dan Rapson says whitebait are juvenile fish which leave the oceans to swim upstream.

“Unfortunately we are losing more every year,” says Dan. “Four out of five major whitebait species are now classified as in decline, including inanga, the most commonly caught species.”

The decline in whitebait species is attributed to a lack of clean healthy rivers and wetlands for adult native fish,

so planting and fencing stream edges can improve their habitat.

“We’d encourage keen whitebaiters to assist with habitat protection to help maintain healthy fish populations, so the Kiwi tradition of whitebaiting can be enjoyed into the future,” says Dan. “There are plenty of local projects you can join which are protecting stream habitats or wetlands.”

We’ll visit some wonderful attractions including Entally House, Pearns Steamworld, Woolmers Estate and National Rose Garden.

From there we’ll travel down the central highway to Campbell Town to visit the Heritage Highway Museum and on to the historic town of Ross, with its four corners in the centre – temptation, recreation, salvation and damnation. Ross is also home to the Tasmanian Wool Centre.

We’ll spend a night at the fishing village of Bicheno before moving on to historic Richmond to spend time soaking up the history. This town still has more than 50 buildings from the 19th century.

Then we head south on the Huon Valley Trail to Geevestown to experience the life and times of the forest industry, before travelling on to the

Tahune Air Walk and Visitor Centre.

The Tahune Air Walk is 597 metres in length and is 48 metres above the ground – a unique way to experience Tasmania’s beautiful environment.

From here we will travel to Hobart, the second-oldest capital city in Australia, for three nights, where we will tour the Cadbury Factory, take a cruise by luxury catamaran through sheltered waterways and visit island bird sanctuaries and an Atlantic salmon farm.

There will also be the Salamanca Market – one of Australia’s best markets with more than 300 stalls.

From here we will enjoy a delightful Gordon River Cruise before departing Queenstown and travelling through the old mining towns of Rosebery and Tullah to a picnic lunch at Dove Lake at Cradle Mountain.

As we slowly make our way back to Devonport, we’ll visit many interesting towns and attractions on the way.

Arriving in Melbourne on October 24, we’ll bid farewell to our Aussie friends, and fly back to New Zealand where guests will be returned to their homes.

Snap-happy trip for Te Puna scouts Two Te Puna scouts have returned from Wellington after an intensive week of tuition from a team of skilled volunteer tutors.

Katrina Williamson, 13, and Rhianne Overell, 15, were among 20 scouts nationwide – and one from Australia – who learnt how to capture images and movement with different effects and adapt them using computer software techniques.

Te Puna group leader Charlene Overell says scouts is a great organisation for both boys and girls to learn new skills they otherwise would be unable to try.

However, a recent publication called ‘New Zealand’s Position in the Green Race’ noted that our environmental performance as a country is slipping. In 2006 we ranked first out of 124 in Yale University’s Environmental Performance Index. As of 2012, we have slipped to 14th, overtaken by countries like Slovakia and Costa Rica. This is a huge concern because we pride ourselves on our clean green image and use this to brand ourselves internationally for tourism and exports.

So why are we falling behind?

• While our freshwater water quality is pretty good, in many catchments across the country water quality is deteriorating and there are increasing water shortages in some areas.

• The percentage of energy supply from renewable sources is decreasing – in 1975, 90 per cent of our electricity came from renewable sources and in 2012 this had dropped to 76 per cent. Overall, approximately 60 per cent of our total energy supply comes from fossil fuels like oil, coal and gas.

• New Zealand’s emissions per capita are the fifth highest out of all the OECD countries, and our emissions have increased 23 per cent since 1990.

Our agricultural emissions have grown one per cent a year since 1990 and now make up 95 per cent of our total methane emissions.

• Our total transport emissions increased 64 per cent between 1990 and 2006. We have the third highest rate of car ownership in the OECD and our transport sector uses 45 per cent of our total consumer energy. This is reflected by our low usage of public transport.

• While we have large areas of New Zealand in our conservation estate, intensification of land use in many areas is negatively affecting water quality.

Erosion, nutrient leaching and loss of biodiversity have all been linked to changes in land use.

• Our native biodiversity has been in decline, and while some improvements have been made, 77 per cent of our threatened species lack targeted recovery programmes and will continue to decline in numbers.

We cannot afford to continue slipping backwards on environmental performance. Turning this around will require concerted effort from all levels of government and our community. As a country we have many natural advantages, and we need to use these to strengthen our economic performance while protecting our clean green image.

The phrase ‘green growth’ has been used to describe economic development which is based on minimising waste and the inefficient use of energy, reducing pollution and emissions, enhancing natural resources and biodiversity. This is the way we must go to ensure sustainable wealth and protect our international competitive position for future generations.

Celebrating community service Community is at the heart for Greerton’s Joyce and Ian Crawford.

The couple, who have been active in the communities over the years, recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Talk to Joyce about her community work and she quickly deflects the praise, saying there is always a team of unsung volunteer heroes doing most of the work behind the scenes.

Joyce and Ian’s shared interest in Christian service goes back to when they met on missionary service in Israel – where Joyce was working for a mission orphan school in Nazareth (for six years from age 21), while Ian taught for a mission school in Jaffa.

After completing their missions to Israel they returned briefly to Scotland,

before deciding to migrate around the world.

“Having lived in the Middle East for six years it was a bit cold in Scotland and we liked what we had heard about New Zealand.”

The couple with their two sons and daughter originally lived in Hastings, where Ian taught maths and science at Hastings Boys’ High School. Joyce, who stated training as a vicar when her eldest two children were at secondary school before being ordained in 1983, took up her first vicar post for St George’s Anglican Church in Gate Pa from 1987-1995.

“All my life I was involved in the church, from school right on. Going on to train was just a continuation of this.”

Stone the crows – gardening in Greerton Green thumbs and straw scarecrows will bring out Greerton’s growing spirit for the upcoming Garden and Arts Festival.

Greerton Village Mainstreet manager Victoria Thomas says the area is getting behind the bi-annual festival with its school scarecrow competition and plant boot sale.

“I wanted to get involved in the festival because it’s a great way to get the community engaged and promote the area at the same time. It’s a fun competition that we think the schools and public will get right behind.”

Scarecrows should reflect the nature of the business that sponsors it and will be displayed in the sponsor’s shopfront to attract votes from the public, with the winners taking the sponsorship money. Schools will also be paid whatever price the scarecrow sells for at the plant boot sale auction on November 8.

Victoria says there has been strong interest from schools in the competition and in raising seedlings to sell at the plant sale, with Greerton Village School incorporating the plant-raising project into its curriculum. Mainstreet is looking for more businesses to sponsor scarecrows ($75).

Mainstreet is also putting together a visitor’s guide to promote the area as a shopping destination.

Brochures from an initial print run of 6000 copies will this month be distributed at hotels, motels and conference venues across the Bay of Plenty and I-sites in Tauranga, the Mount, Matamata and Cambridge. Details: 07 571 6347

The 2012 Olympic flame burnt on a little longer for children at one Tauranga early childcare centre this week.

While the 2012 London Olympics closed on Sunday (UK time), about 30 two-four year-olds at ABC Kidicorp ran, cycled, threw and jumped the house down on Monday as South Africans, Fijians, Japanese and Canadians in front of an adoring crowd comprising parents and the odd celebrity.

The action began in epic fashion with a race to the end of the driveway to the instrumental theme of Chariots of Fire, then progressed with high jump, long jump, a potato and spoon race, archery, shot put, javelin, bike racing, relay race and tug of war.

Each child was presented with a gold medal and a certificate after competing.

Be wise, immunise; on time, every time Why is it important to immunise my child?

Immunisation helps prevent many serious childhood infections and diseases.

These diseases can seriously harm them. When a child is immunised, their body’s immune system is stimulated to protect against the diseases represented in the vaccine.

Are the diseases that vaccines protect against serious?

Each disease carries its own set of risks.

Some are more serious at certain ages; whooping cough for example is most dangerous in very young babies. Some diseases are rare but very serious for most people that get them, where as other diseases, such as measles, are very contagious although not everyone who gets it will be seriously ill.

What diseases are children immunised against?

Diptheria, Haemophilus Influenza Type

B (HIB), Hepatitis B, Measles, Meningococcal B, Mumps, Pertussis (whooping cough), Polio, Rubella and Tetanus.

Why immunise on time?

Delaying or missing immunisations increases the risk of getting a disease and reduces the protection when it’s needed most. Starting immunisation at six weeks means babies are protected when they are most vulnerable.

Vaccinations are timed to provide protection when your child is at most risk from these diseases – six weeks, three months, five months, 15 months and four years of age.

In-home childcare and early education provider footsteps, has become the first organisation in New Zealand to gain a certification by leading child protection training organisation, Child Matters, qualifying it to train its own staff in child protection – by teaching them to recognise the signs of child abuse.

“We as an organisation decided that we are serious, and that means not just saying but doing” says CEO and founder Kevin Christie.

“We made a decision that everyone in our organisation will be trained to recognise the signs of child abuse.”

Kevin says all 65 staff, including 50 in-home early childhood teachers are now trained to recognise the signs and respond accordingly.

“Child abuse prevention is all our responsibility.

Unless you do something about, it’s just words without action.”

All footsteps staff have undertaken a base course in child protection and then early childhood teachers interacting with children in the home receive a further five days training.

Going one step further, director Marina Jury has completed a one-year diploma in Child Protection Studies, so footsteps is able to train its own staff. Marina says it has been a two to three year process but well worth it.

“We do it because we care about children – we believe we can’t provide a quality learning programme or care if children aren’t in a safe place.”

Footsteps was established in 2001 to provide home based care and education for pre-school children and their caregivers from a qualified ECE teacher. The organisation has in-home caregivers available in the Tauranga area and is always on the lookout for new caregivers as well as providing access to its free educational programme.

Kindy kids welcome birthday A group of Welcome Bay parents frustrated by the lack of kindergarten care in the area rolled up their sleeves to fix the problem.

The rest, as they say, is history.

In September it is 20 years since the doors for Welcome Bay Kindergarten opened for its first class of seven and birthday and celebrations are being planned. Members of the founding team are planning a reunion while teachers are putting together a commemorative recipe book.

President of the founding building committee Liz Mason says it was a huge effort that brought the whole community together, with fundraising for the community’s $92,000 taking 18 months, while a major working bee saw the kindergarten’s Welcome Bay Kindergarten founding committee president Liz Mason and teacher kitset building put up in Portland St during Sharon Jackson with Hannah Delo, 4, bake a weekend.

so forth, and we rolled our sleeves up and got stuck in. Within two days we had the building finished – it was an amazing effort by everyone.”

Ongoing fundraising and ‘scrounging’ donations of goods and services helped them establish a kindergarten despite the Government’s decision not to build any for 10 years.

“At the time Welcome Bay kids couldn’t go to kindy or they could only have three months before they could start school.”

Since opening the roll has grown 10-fold with a total of 70 pre-schoolers now attending.

Our country loves to celebrate greatness.

One only has to get a glimpse of the news after a New Zealand’s athlete won gold at the London Olympics to see the full extent of our joy and gratitude.

The combined rumble of more than 20 classic muscle cars’ V8 engines will be music to autophile ears this month when Turners Auctions Tauranga sells some of the most beautiful beasts ever to roll out of Detroit.

Classic muscle cars are not just motor vehicles.

They are fine works of art wrapped up with chrome bows and leather ribbons.

Anyone who has ever drooled over a ’56 Buick Century, fantasised about a road trip in a ’55 Chevy Coup or considered cruising in a ’66 Impala should be at the auction on August 25 from 12pm.

Daniel Peet from Turners says they are often thought of as a place to buy an everyday car, but these machines are more likely to appeal to car enthusiasts looking for either a show piece or a weekend touring car.

A lot of the cars have been supplied by a Bay of Plenty car enthusiast who loves American muscle.

Due to the amount of interest many other local enthusiasts have booked their cars into this exciting auction.

As well as the classics their will also be a selection of late model muscle machines, including a 2006 Ford Falcon XR6 to be auctioned with no reserve.

There’s been a lot of interest in the auction as not many places run these type of auctions anymore.

If anyone has ever thought of getting themselves a muscle car this is the time to do it.

“We’ll exhaust every avenue to help someone who loves these cars get behind the wheel of one on the day,” says Daniel.

Tauranga gets first e-bikes for posties Tauranga posties have a new fleet of electric-assisted push bikes.

Approximately 66 bikes with electric motors built into the front hub have been specifically built for the posties by a New Zealand bike manufacturer.

The bikes weigh around 35kg and can comfortably carry up to 45kg in the clip on trailer and 7kg in each pannier, meaning they can comfortably carry almost 60kg of mail.

Philippa King has been a postie for 11 years and loves her new e-bike.

“It takes me between four and five hours to complete my run and it is quicker on the new bike,” says Philippa.

“The bikes take a bit of the stress off my joints.”

The bikes are programmed to do about 17kph, but on footpaths the bikes will only do a maximum speed of 10kph while delivering mail.

Lithium ion batteries are mounted behind the saddle and will last a hole run and a half. The batteries are charged every night and take between four to five hours to charge and have an expected life-span of five years.

Philippa’s run is just shy of 21km, with the average run being between 20-25km long. Phillipa says she gets about a run and a half from a single charge.

The distance that can be ridden on an e-bike on a single charge is variable and very much dependant on weight being carried, hills and speeds cyclists ride at.

The bikes themselves do not look too dissimilar

on July 23. Tauranga is the first city because it is the first centre to integrate services between Courier Post and NZ Post. “As you start pedalling the engine engages. You still have to pedal and the bikes can be ridden manually if preferred,” says Paul.

“From my understanding we went for e-bikes because it is a greener option than petrol and reduces the workload

of posties when we are trying to introduce greater delivery options.”

When the rider stops pedalling, the motor disengages.

The bikes do not require registering or a warrant of fitness but NZ Post employs its own cycle mechanics who provide regular three monthly servicing to ensure safety standards are maintained.

Inflammation: is your body on fire? (Finale) Most chronic diseases have an inflammatory component.

In some cases inflammation is the cause of the problem and in others it is part of the problem.

For example, autoimmune arthritis is caused by the immune system starting to attack joint tissues. With the more common rheumatoid arthritis the attack is against the membranes that contain

synovial fluid. The body then tries to remedy the autoimmune attack by initiating an inflammatory response.

Unfortunately, the problem is one that cannot be repaired and this leads to a permanent state of elevated inflammation.

This prolonged inflammatory attack then causes cocktails of oxygen and nitrogen free radicals and the combination of these, plus destructive inflammatory chemicals called prostaglandins with John Arts and cytokines cause joint tissue

destruction. The outcome is a progressive loss of joint function with pain, stiffness, swelling and disfiguration.

Types of tissue

There are about 70 autoimmune diseases and these typically attack specific types of tissue. In arthritis, the joint is attacked while lupus attacks connective tissue. Some like polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) attack muscles; in others, including psoriasis and vitiligo, it is the skin that is attacked. Chronic fatigue syndrome is a bizarre disease where the attack is launched against cell energy structures, especially the mitochondria which produce energy. In every case, the inflammation is an attempt of the body to heal the problem it actually caused, resulting in more destruction, swelling and pain.

Nutritional therapy to lower inflammation is usually very complementary alongside medical treatment.

When I create anti-inflammatory programmes I target food compounds that can lower cytokine levels and generally reduce immune system generated inflam-

mation. Many of these are also potent antioxidants which appear to directly lower cytokine levels and additionally mop up the excess free radicals these produce.

Key extracts

Most antioxidants exert some anti-inflammatory function but the most important are the OPCs, usually extracted from grape seeds, resveratrol, compounds from acai berries, most dark berries and spices especially turmeric. The key is to use the most potent extracts at the right levels.

For example, with PMR I target about 400mg of pure OPC, 100mg of resveratrol and 50-100mg of turmeric extracts. There are many plant foods that are anti-inflammatory including tropical fruit especially pineapples and papaya, pomegranate (as juice) and ginger.

ing him so badly that the team were unsure whether he could be saved. Sue and ARRC director and vet Dr Liza Schnieder washed and monitored Diesel during a 10 day period, during which he couldn’t eat.

Sue says that one day the tough feline began eating ravenously, and while he lost much of his hair in the ensuing weeks, his health began to improve.

He is now healthy and the proud new owner of a shiny new coat, awaiting a caring owner aware of the correct food and veterinary care he needs for his mild skin issues.

Beeswax and balderdash – Comvita founder Claude Stratford has seen his share of both, but he credits his longevity to a regular dose of bee pollen and manuka honey.

On Saturday, August 18, he turns 102, just a month after the company he founded in 1974 reached $102 million in annual sales.

Little did he know when he got his first beehive at the age of 11 that it was the beginning of a life-long association with beekeeping and belief in honey’s health-giving properties that would grow to a global exporting business.

Convinced of the health benefits of bee pollen, he has taken a tablespoon every day since the age of 26. At the age of 64 he went on to set up Comvita, making and selling a unique range of health products from the basement in his home in Paengaroa.

The dumplings were deep fried to crisp up the noodles that poked out, adding a new dimension to a recipe I have tinkered with for years.

These dumplings are best eaten as an entrée or party food with some beautiful chutney or homemade relish. There is plenty to choose from at the Tauranga Farmers’ Market.

MOTOR INN

Crispy Pork & Prawn Noodle Dumplings (Gluten free)

Ingredients 300g pork mince 300g raw de-veined prawns, drained well ½ small red onion, chopped fine 1 spring onion, sliced fine 1teaspoon crushed red chilli 1 tablespoon of dark fermented fish paste 2-3 cloves chopped garlic 3-4 tablespoons lime juice Small bunch chopped coriander Sea salt and fresh cracked pepper 100g Korean rice noodles, cooked and chopped Maize cornflour for dusting Method Place the minced pork, garlic, lime juice, onions and chilli in a bowl and marinate for several hours.

Chop up half the prawns so they are chunky and set aside. Blend the rest in a food processor into the now drained pork mince and the dark fish paste, which you may have to warm to help mix in. Add the chopped noodles, coriander, chopped prawns, salt and pepper.

Roll into a soft ball. If too wet, dust in a little cornflour, then deep fry in hot oil until golden brown and puffy.

This recipe can also be steamed for those who don’t like fried foods. Adjust seasoning as desired. I often add more chilli and garlic.

You cannot taste just prawn or just pork and to some they taste like chicken, but they disappear very rapidly, so make heaps!

Cupcake day for SPCA FATHERS DAY BRUNCH

Most of us have a sweet tooth, even our pets – so Tauranga SPCA is hosting a cupcake day in Red Square on August 27.

Between 11am-2.30pm SPCA Tauranga will be selling cupcakes to raise money for its new animal shelter.

SPCA Tauranga’s fundraising and marketing manager Dorothy Forbes says she would like to see the SPCA raise up to $10,000.

The public can purchase a pack of six cupcakes for $9 each or a four pack for $6.50, as well as SPCA merchandise including tea towels and key rings.

Dorothy says the Bakeshack has donated the majority of cupcakes, both vanilla and chocolate, each decorated with cat and dog pictures.

Tauranga SPCA is currently building a new animal shelter to achieve a park-like

area for the public to view animals up close. Dorothy says with the growth of Tauranga, there has been more pressure on the SPCA to home animals in the old shelter.

“We see over 1600 animals a year, it’s huge.”

Many local businesses have shown support, such as Tauranga City Council and staff at the Tauranga Police Station.

Dorothy says she would love to see the public get behind the SPCA as well.

“The more donations and support we get, the better it would be.”

Creatures, creation ‘Racist crap’, week after week is ‘slander against Maori’ The day two creatures of the same gender can reproduce their own kind is the day I will support same sex ‘marriage’. The day the mouse and the mole of the opposite sex can produce an elephant is the day I’ll support evolution.

Christ, the author of Christianity showed it by His teaching and example. Because most of His followers miss the mark doesn’t deny or condemn His teaching. If we followed the Christ as He lived and taught can you just imagine what a wonderful place this world would be!

He and his Father created it for us to live in. I sorrow for those of the same sex who haven’t found a mate of the opposite sex. God says it is not good for man to live alone, so he created Eve, a woman to live with Adam to complete him and procreate.

He didn’t create Adam and Steve. God doesn’t support just living together what we used to call ‘shacking up’ or with a ceremony Civil Union. Incidentally He doesn’t support divorce either; to Him it’s an abomination. Doesn’t the Bible teach we are to love and forgive one another even our enemies?

There’s nothing wrong with two men sharing the same house, they can be good company, but they can’t marry. It’s certainly not the ideal environment in which to bring up a child, in spite of there being some unhappy marriages.

Can anybody tell me why the Roman and Greek empires collapsed? It looks as if our nation and culture is heading the same way.

How would you like me to start pointing out the very real problems of Te Ao Pakeha? That’s right…you wouldn’t.

If people want to protect the rights of Water use for the benefits of all and future generations then let them because that is all its really about, Maori are not capitalists unlike pakeha which is why your readers are having a difficult time understanding the motive behind such a request. The whanau responsible for the claim are not trying to profit for themselves.

How would Maori possibly support a Marae if we were simply out for ourselves? Well we just couldn’t.

Interestingly there are no letters about the four pakeha men at the head of a large financial corporation that misappropriated over $7 million of public

money, nor are there any disgruntled writers disturbed about the $500 million AMI Insurance tax payer bail out, note: AMI Insurance is a privately owned company. Seems to me there are worse things happening in our country and the energy these writers are summoning needs to be directed to more worthy causes.

Either that or they need to go outside, meet some people and get a life!

Unnecessary friction Weekend Sun 10 August. Peter Dey has his rose coloured glasses on again looking into a long tunnel. He castigates Mary Brooks over her “fictional” story of Taine Mhor arriving in NZ in 1120AD. However he himself does not advance any evidence to support his earlier claim that no other people inhabited NZ before the arrival of Maori. I am interested in both sides of the argument as I would like to know the true facts.

There has been far too much evidence put forward (and found) indicating that there were various peoples living in NZ before the arrival of Maori (including stories passed down by Maori elders through the generations) for it to be dismissed out of hand as Peter Dey wants to do.

D Holm in the same issue refers to the writings of Associate Professor Elizabeth Rata of Auckland University (a brilliant writer) writing about the “corruption of the settlement process” and the ”Massive rort on the NZ public”. A friend pointed out recently that the Treaty

Settlement machinations have become a major industry employing thousands of people and costing the claimants and the country hundreds of millions of unnecessary dollars annually.This is one major reason the Government does not put a stop to the claims.

The longer all this unnecessary anger and friction continues the deeper the mess NZ is going to find itself in and the harder it will be to get out of. There is no way a written version of the NZ constitution is going to solve this mess.

Wonderful, but further on, we were told that the man involved had to sell his Bugatti motorcycle to provide this deposit, keeping his other motorcycle, which also appeared to be quite an expensive model. And there was another expensive looking car on camera at the entrance of his garage.

Why should people like this draw prime slots on New Zealand television highlighting their purported personal financial difficulties? The alt-country trail that starts in Pukehina The new album from Redwood Trail is so good that people don’t know what to make of it.

If that sounds strange, let me explain…

Every so often a local CD comes in that completely blows me away, something that – if it’s not a patronising term – is of absolutely international quality. Earlier this year it was The Flame by gypsy jazzers Bonjour Swing; before that it was last year’s debut from blues rock duo Swamp Thing.

Opinions aplenty

For my own amusement, whenever this happens, I make sure I play the album for as many people as I can who happen to wander through the entrance hall of the Watusi Country Club, giving them no information whatsoever about the music and waiting for their opinions. People who come up here tend not to be shy about offering opinions.

And everyone, just as I was, is baffled by Redwood Trail’s October Sessions.

I ask them where they think it’s from. Most opt

for somewhere in America’s mid-west, though a couple of enterprising folk thought it might be Canadian.

You can just about hear the sound of jaws hitting the floor when I tell them that the album was recorded in Pukehina.

Unlikely hotbed of alternative

Now normally this would factor in as some sort of cultural cringe, the idea that if anything is really good it probably comes from overseas. Even calling it “international quality” suggests something of the sort. But, by the same token, there is something improbable in the fact that this collection of absolutely self-assured alt-country tunes should come from somewhere as unlikely as Pukehina, not a place exactly known as a hotbed of alternative (or any other) music.

wood Trail is really the baby of Brad Taylor.

He has assembled a group of friends to play his songs, has recorded them himself, and has created a thing of absolute beauty, a fully formed whole of an album, from the packaging to the sound to the material itself. He cites Neil Young, Iron & Wine, Jolie Holland, and Ray Lamontagne as influences but the sound is both distinctive and original.

What makes it most extraordinary is the confidence and maturity on display, a confidence that allows the six musicians to each play with absolute simplicity to match the stripped-down minimalist nature of the songs.

Brad is a man who writes songs with few wasted words – these are like little tone poems and it says a lot for the backing that you never once question the skill of the players, despite the fact that they never do anything elaborate enough to allow you to work out how good they are. Unlike most albums where how well someone solos is a point of interest, here it simply doesn’t come up: there is a perfection about the backing and sound that make such considerations irrelevant.

Strong and consistent vision

So, a little history: Redwood (pre-Trail) released an eponymous album five years ago.

It was really good. Brad (vocals, guitar, harp) was accompanied by Dene Thurston on drums and Daniel Wadsworth on bass.

On this album they are joined by electric guitarist Glen Brown (ex-Bare Bones and Cabaret), violinist Tristan Carter (taking the place of the previous harmonica) and harmony singer Alana Bevan. And that’s the sound: a strumming acoustic, subtle atmospheric arpeggios on electric, soft twin voices and a mournful fiddle weaving through it all.

It’s not often that someone has as strong and consistent vision as Brad: five years apart and both albums are clearly chips off the same block, the new one simply more refined, more distilled and even better recorded (Brad went to Auckland’s School of Audio Engineering, which helps explain the beautiful sound). Even the evocative covers are almost a diptych.

Astonishing recording

Most astonishingly, pretty much the entire album was recorded over the course of one long day.

The songs themselves are beautiful. Each is a tiny meditation, sometimes just a thought or idea that is allowed to grow and whose subtle melody burrows its way a little more into your brain with each listening.

Occasionally, and usually accompanied by some spectacular fighting, films can break the Curse Of The Subtitle. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon did it, and Thai film OngBak. Now The Raid arrives from Indonesia, a jaw-dropping spectacle of wildly extravagant violence. The set-up is simplicity itself: a group of elite police raid a drug dealer’s safe house in Jakarta: they fight their way in and they fight their way out. It’s bone-crunchingly visceral, wildly exciting and completely over the top. You’ll be hard pressed to find a purer, bloodier action flick this year. Stunning stuff.

There’s a surprising undercurrent of melancholy behind American Pie: Reunion , the fourth in the series. What happens to horny teens once jobs, marriage and the real life intrude? Apparently a lot of sex jokes and trying to relive the past – only this time with the obligatory frontal male nudity – as the class of ’99 re-gather (everyone important is present and correct) to learn a few more life lessons. Or not. And for all the recycled bits it’s still a lot of crude fun, the characters generating genuine affection, with the warmth created in the quieter moments nicely balancing the gross-out gags.

Ghost Rider must have actually made money, thus we have Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance , more a reboot than a sequel, with only Nicolas Cage returning and a prologue providing the briefest of origin stories. The simplistic plot has the GR lured back from self-imposed exile by a church order and tasked with saving a special boy from Eastern European gangsters, while a new version of the devil (Ciaran Hinds) lurks in the shadows. Directorial team Neveldine and Taylor (Crank) may be a perfect match for crazy Nic, and they certainly bring a darker, more visceral tone

Not only are there some very funny moments but the film also finds time for interludes of contemplation, on expansionist America and the dangers of its all-engulfing ‘Dream’, and the struggle of a writer to find his voice.

Don’t be expecting another Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – though there are echoes of similar themes, this is a rather straighter affair and more low-key. But Depp is terrific and the support cast, from Richard Jenkins in a ridiculous wig to a totally wigged-out Giovanni Ribisi are a whole bunch of fun.

Jay and Silent Bob Get Old is a mixed bag. And the pleasure (or not) you get from it will depend entirely in how much interest you have in the two characters, originally invented by Kevin Smith for his 1994 classic Clerks.

Actually, it’s more how much interest you have in Kevin Smith and unpredictable acting buddy Jason Mewes, since this is a record of three of their live comedy shows from earlier this year in the UK. They’re very loose affairs, predictably foulmouthed and tasteless but also touching with surprising honesty on Mewes’ awful upbringing and drug problems. If you’re a fan you’ll love it.

The Rum Diary was Hunter S Thompson’s one full-length foray onto pure fiction, an early novel loosely informed by his days as a journalist in late-50s Puerto Rico. It’s not, in all honesty, a great book, written before Thompson perfected the mercurial brutality of his prose. The film, on the other hand, is a lot of fun.

Most important to its success is that producer Johnny Depp has enlisted the services of longdormant English writer/director Bruce Robinson, the man behind legendary Brit comedy Withnail and I. He does his best to create a narrative out of Hunter’s somewhat rambling story as Depp (way to old, but who cares?) negotiates the newspaper’s eccentric staff, falls for Amber Heard, the beautiful

Smash and dash: Te Puke courts success Forget about the posh Auckland single sex private schools, this weekend Te Puke High School is determined to dominate the girls’ section of the secondary school squash championships.

ing above its weight in squash – particularly in the girls’ division. Last year they were second in the tournament, the third year running they had placed in the top three, and this weekend they want to go one better when the secondary nationals are held in Tauranga.

Teacher in charge of squash Simon McGillivray says thanks to ‘fabulous support’ from the Te Puke Squash Club, the school has become a breeding ground for top players, with the boys’ team consistently in the top 10 at the secondary champs while the girls are usually among the top four.

Leading player Courtney Bragg says the girls’ team is pulling out all the stops to win the championship and repeat their 2009 victory.

“It’s the last year for some of the girls, so we really want to top it off. It would be so awesome.”

Year 12 student Courtney followed her family into the sport, starting playing aged eight, just ‘mucking around’ hitting to

herself, before getting into tournaments by age 10.

“I got hooked to it pretty quickly and I’ve been playing ever since.”

Courtney, 17, has been in the Bay of Plenty team under-19 girls’ team for three years and recently played in the region’s senior team, which came second out of all the districts at the national champs in New Plymouth.

On Sunday both Courtney and Te Puke teammate Samantha Brown hope to be confirmed for the national secondary school team competing against Australian state teams in Grafton, New South Wales in late August. But beyond this month Courtney’s big focus is on improving her game to make the cut for the national junior girls’ team of four to play at the word championships in Poland next July. As one of 10 players in the squad competing to play in Poland she is training three hours a day.

“Playing at the worlds in Poland would be such an awesome experience. It’s my main goal now.”

The usual suspects The country’s best young squash players will showcase their skills on Tauranga’s state-of-the-art squash courts during the New Zealand Secondary Schools Squash Championships this weekend.

More than 350 secondary schools students representing 52 teams will pile into the Devoy Squash and Fitness Centre from August 17-19 for the nation’s largest squash event.

President Dame Susan Devoy, whose sons Alex, Jamie and Josh will be competing, says it’s great for young players to test their abilities against the nation’s best in their age group.

“It’s events like this that also provide pathways for our emerging players to progress to higher levels.

What’s more exciting is that we may well see New Zealand’s future world champion emerge from this event.”

Cooperation between Squash Bay of Plenty and Tauranga Boys’ College means the centre, built on college land on the corner of 13th Ave and Devonport Rd, is available for casual and avid boys’ college squash players alike.

The college is confident its team, comprising Alex Oakley, Jo Lyons, Michael Dunston, Jamie Oakley, Alex Revington and Ben Grinord – who has just returned from competing in the Junior Men’s World Team Squash Championships in Doha – can deliver on home court and improve on its placing in last year’s event.

The campaign runs until August 31 and encourages people to donate pre-loved spring and summer clothing to support hospice shops.

Trish Rae, fundraising manager for Waipuna Hospice, says: “We are well aware of how tough things are economically for businesses, so to have Postie come on board is incredible.”

Not only will Postie stores collect clothing on Waipuna Hospice’s behalf, they will also give a 20 per cent discount voucher, eligible on any of their new season items, to customers who take donated clothing for hospice into Postie stores.

The discount vouchers will be available until August 31, 2012.

“This incentive encourages you to clear out your wardrobes to make room for the new season fashions, whilst donating clothing to support a worthy cause.”

Postie general manager Jane Gammon says they didn’t hesitate to get involved.

“We believe that hospice and their volunteers provide an invaluable service to families in their time of need.

Postie staff are keen to get behind the campaign and hope that by offering our stores as a collection point, we can assist hospice shops to generate the funds needed to continue their great work.”

Taking risks for a good cause Drastically cutting their prices is scary for the team at Bay Chiropractic, but it’s all for a good cause.

The local company is volunteering their specialist services to promote health and wellbeing in the Tauranga community and collecting food for Tauranga Food Bank and Tauranga SPCA. “We’re giving up a lot of time to do this,” says owner Lawri Rutherford.

“We thought ‘if we are really going to make a go of this then we actually have

to be willing to take the fall’.”

From August 1 – 31 they are offering free chiropractic and acupuncture assessments when people bring in a bag of non-perishable foods for people or pets.

They are also offering x-rays for $20 – down from their standard $160 rate.

“I love the SPCA – the food bank came up originally but I wanted to get the SPCA in there, being an animal lover.”

So far they have received a good selection of foods but Lawri is hoping for much more.

“We have a nice chunk of stuff – obviously we really want to take as much stuff down as we can for them.

“We’re just asking people to be generous.”

Bay Chiropractic consists of two chiropractors and a Chinese medicine acupuncturist.

God, not gold, the reward in life’s race The first Olympic Games for which we still have written records were held in 776 BCE, though it is generally believed that the Games had been going on for many years already.

The ancient Olympic Games grew and continued to be played every four years for nearly 1200 years. In 393 CE, the Roman emperor

Theodosius I, abolished the Games.

Approximately 1500 years later, a young Frenchmen named Pierre de Coubertin began their revival. And in 1896, at the first modern Olympic Games, was held.

In the Bible in the apostle Paul’s writings we see glimpses of the running races which were part of what we would call the Olympics.

25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.

Paul is using the picture of the running race but his point is not a running race but the race of life. And he does not talk about a gold medal but the reward that God has for us of a home in heaven. What an encouragement to each of us to run God’s race in God’s way and receive God’s reward.

What is the church, really? on the inter-dependent relationships of each part of the body and on the specific functions of each part, as opposed to structure based on lines of authority or hierarchal systems seen in business models.

This means also that the church is not ‘leader-less’.

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12:28 that God has appointed in the church “first apostles, second prophets, third teachers...”. He says also in Ephesians 4:11–16 that when Jesus ascended, He gave gifts of gifted individuals to the church and for the church: “And He (Jesus) gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” Paul also makes it clear that these functions and giftings are for today because he says in verse 13 that they were given to the church until… “until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ”, which clearly has never happened in church history.

Leadership therefore is defined by God’s calling and gifting and is outworked on the basis of function within the body, in relationship with the other parts of the body.

The Apostle Paul says in Ephesians 1:22–23 that God has placed all things under the feet of Christ and that God has given Him as “head over all things to the Church”, which is Christ’s body, and that the Church is “the fullness of Him Who fills all in all [for in that body lives the full measure of Him Who makes everything complete, and Who fills everything everywhere with Himself ].”

Paul says in Ephesians 3:10 that it is through the Church that “the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places”. In verse 21, Paul says that unto Jesus “be glory in the Church”.

Ephesians 5:25–6 tells us that “Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for her” and that He will “present the Church to Himself in splendour, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish”.

We see from these verses alone that the Church is significant in the plans, the purposes and the heart of God. It is significant that the most widely used metaphor used in scripture to describe the church is that of a body.

The church, like a natural body, is a living organism made up of interdependent parts that work together in dynamic unity, in yielded and submitted relationship together, under the instruction of the head, who is Christ.

The church is not an organisation, a business or a club.

As in a natural body, there is clear structure in the spiritual body that is the church, but structure that is based
