New Zealand: 100 per cent ‘she’ll be right’ Message to the world – clean up your own backyards before you go off the deep end at New Zealand.

The infant formula case leaves more questions than it answers. It’s a potential killer and a terrible mistake which I’m sure is deeply regretted by all concerned. Yet, no-one has died. No-one is even sick. The recall has been successful.

Maybe the potential effects yet to surface have not been well reported, but it seems the trade bans are a massive over-reaction. Yes it has serious potential, but it seems to be well under control and being well managed.

There seems to be an incredible backlash against New Zealand – even to the point of a Reuters report, 100% pure fantasy, claiming all our rivers are too polluted to swim in.

The punishment and scorn from holierthan-thou nations defies belief.

The Chinese have been sounding off, as if they’ve never had a food safety issue. This is the grubbiest of all pots calling the kettle black.

Here at RR we have to ask why a major backlash against all Fonterra products, such as imposed by Russia, is justified.

Worldwide, intelligent trade commentators have been impressed with NZ’s reaction, their honesty, and the Government’s determination to work closely with the company to solve it. Fonterra has nailed the problem, recalled the product; and other milk products are not affected.

China’s position is particularly rich, considering some of the life threatening hazards that come out of that country, and continue to take lives within and beyond.

There have been numerous reports on China’s horrific pollution of air, water, and soil. With that level of pollution, it is almost impossible to have safe food.

Ingredients tainted with melamine entered the global food supply — including products from well-known brands like Mars, Heinz and Cadbury in the United States.

Dodgy fish farming Cosmetic Medicine

Melamine-tainted milk products sickened hundreds of thousands of infants in China, and melamine contamination is believed to be responsible for thousands of pet deaths in the US. In May this year, half the rice sold in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou was found to be tainted with cadmium.

Chinese seafood farmers won’t let their children eat the fish they cultivate.

A girl living in a fish-farming village is reported to have started her period at age seven because of the high levels of hormones

used in fish cultivation. Farmers use strong antibiotics and growth hormones to keep fish alive in overcrowded, dirty conditions.

Half the apple juice sold in the United States originates from China—about 367 million gallons per year. Pesticide residues that remain on fruits, vegetables, and processed foods, when they enter the food supply have long been a problem.

China is the world’s largest pesticide producer and has failed to address illegal or dangerous chemical residues on foods, evident by its industrial strength maximum allowable residue levels.

Then remember the toys filled with lead, sulphurous drywall and pet food spiked with melamine.

We could go on. And on. Okay, so we will.

There’s plenty of examples in recent weeks of foreign hazards and incompetence causing death, yet the reaction worldwide has been relatively light, compared to the Fonterra case.

Crash and burn

Tonga has knowingly accepted into service a crap Chinese aircraft, the MA-60, which has crashed all over the world, and is banned from NZ. Rumour has it, other pilots, when passing, brace their hands on the windscreen of their own planes, for fear of flying debris.

When the Asiana flight 214 crashed at San Francisco, due to pilot error, we didn’t see every plane from that airline grounded internationally as a consequence; or any Asian-trained pilots banned from the skies.

As far as I know, Korean pilots are still blazing around the globe with exactly the same set of skills (or lack of ) as the four hapless Noddys who smashed, bounced and burned 305 passengers and killed two Chinese girls.

(Although, if the impact doesn’t get you, the fire engines will. We don’t see a world ban on American crash tenders, do we?)

Nor did we see the airline busting its guts to reassure travellers or retrain pilots. It seemed more concerned about suing a TV station for reporting bogus crew names (in case you missed it) Captain Sum Ting Wong, Wi Tu Lo, Ho Lee Fuk, and Bang Ding Ow. Just about every week there’s a man-made

disaster in China, caused by poor engineering, shoddy building practices and inferior materials. Thinking of travelling to Asia? Bear in mind that six bridges have collapsed in China in the last two years. We’d recommend taking a boat instead, but the record of ferry disasters proves marine safety isn’t any better.

We are swamped with chemicalladen Asian goods, some that leach substances and others that are highly flammable.

We’ve seen American, Japanese and European cars recalled because of faulty equipment, including brakes, which have killed people. Yet, there is no ban on products as a result.

Water woes

As for the story about our rivers – that is just complete bollocks.

As a fanatical kayaker for more than 40 years, I can tell you the Kiwi rivers are the best in the world and getting better. Yes there are a few isolated issues, and they are under incredible scrutiny. So much in fact, you could get the impression that the problem is bigger than reality. Which is probably the source of the Reuters’ mis-information.

When you witness the atrocious pollution of other waterways around the world, you realise exactly how pure NZ is. Canal boaters in France can’t even handle wet mooring ropes that have been dunked in the contaminated rivers. Many English waterways have similar problems.

Russia, Knee Jerk Champions of the World, ain’t no saint either when it comes to pollution.

Forty per cent of Russia’s territory was screwed over with significant ecological stress by the 1990s, due to deforestation, energy irresponsibility, pollution, and nuclear waste.

Need I mention Chernobyl?

In Russia, 75 per cent of surface water and 50 per cent of all water is polluted.

Worst of all is their game Russian Roulette, which kills at least one in six. More dangerous than Bullrush and banned most in NZ schools except maybe Urewera High.

About time the tut-tutters around the world wound their heads in, and put things in perspective.

Mistakes will be made. Human nature guarantees there is no such thing as perfection.

But nations are judged on how they respond, and New Zealand will be 100 per cent “She’ll be right”. Not because we leave it to chance, but because we work to make it right. Because at least, we care enough to make sure she’s right. brian@thesun.co.nz

Community concern Mark Boyle is concerned with Puff 2 Go selling tested synthetic cannabis.

Te Puke community leaders and residents are banding together to fight a store’s stubborn stance on continuing to sell synthetic cannabis.

Te Puke store Puff 2 Go is facing a barrage of complaints and concern after the R18 store recently opened and begun selling legal highs – despite claiming they don’t sell to senior high school students.

Last month the Psychoactive Substances Bill came into law enforcing tough restrictions on the availability and accessibility of socalled ‘legal’ highs in communities including no sales from dairies, grocery stores, petrol stations or anywhere alcohol is sold.

There must also be no sales to under-18 year olds. Anyone found breaching the rules faces up to two-years in prison or a fine of up to $500,000.

Concerned resident Mark Boyle has met with the shop owners twice in the last two weeks and says, although realising the agitation and ill feeling, they are standing by their decision.

“People are expressing their

concern and asking him to stop selling it and I think that’s how the community should handle it,” says Mark.

“Continued lobbying has value.

Provided this lobbying is done in a sensible way it will reinforce the point that our community does not want the sale of this product to continue.”

Puff 2 Go owners Lindsay Zuo and Jin Woo Hwang closed the shop for two days while police ensured business is conducted legally before given the green light.

“We are being monitored by the government and wouldn’t do anything wrong,” says Lindsay.

“This product is not all bad. I know it’s helping people for pain relief and most customers use it to relax.”

Although a small part of their business, offering 10 different government tested legal high

products, Lindsay is adamant the dangerous part is not the product itself but how people use the product.

“At least give this regulation a try before waving the flag saying you are against it.”

Te Puke High School chaplain Dane Attwood aims to completely eradicate the legal highs from the town, likening it to nicotine.

“We pick up kids as young as 13 with nicotine in their back pockets and obviously nicotine is not sold to under 18’s either,” says Dane.

Lindsay and Jin Woo also own the main street Mayfair Dairy, open for the last four years, and Dane accuses the only reason Puff 2 Go is open is purely for legal highs.

“As a community we would like to see the shop closed, for that reason; and just because that substance itself is not good in the

Maungatapu crash victim ‘caring dad’

The Tauranga electrician who died when the van he was driving plunged off Maungatapu causeway in a crash on Monday had “everything to live for”.

Gregory Mark Woledge, 24, was killed when his Toyota work van and a Mitsubishi car collided on the causeway bridge at 6.10pm, shunting the van off the bridge into five metre deep water in Rangataua Bay. His body was recovered still inside the AMP’T Electrical van pulled from the harbour by crane on Tuesday. His passenger, a 23-year-old work colleague, managed to free himself and was rescued by Police Constable Deane O’Connor, a member of the Strategic Traffic Unit at Western Bay of Plenty Police. Greg Woledge’s parents - Kevin and Vivienne Woledge – have described the 24-year-old father as a “gentle caring dad and a loving partner”.

“Greg was a healthy 24-year-old, who had everything to live for. “Greg and partner Chelsea were looking forward to the birth of their second child in a few months. As parents we found Greg to be a loving, diligent and devoted person and a very caring and fine son. Greg and his sister Emma loved each other dearly and were the very best of friends.”

Police are still investigating the crash but early indications suggest a Mitsubishi travelling towards Mount Maunganui crossed the centreline into the path of the oncoming AMP’T Electrical van.

Woman drives to Mount asleep

A sleeping woman managed to drive 300kilometres from Hamilton to Mount Maunganui via Auckland while texting – which police say could have been a tragedy. Police first received a call from the woman’s friend about midnight on Tuesday saying she suffers from a sleeping disorder and had taken sleeping pills before driving off from her Hamilton home.

Police tracked the woman’s cellphone as she sent texts to friends which placed her in Otara in Auckland. The next message said she was headed for the Coromandel. At 3.45am the woman’s phoned polled in Te Puna before she was found slumped over the steering wheel asleep in her car in Mount Maunganui at 5am.

Papamoa burglar admits break-ins A Hamilton man is awaiting sentencing behind bars after admitting to burgling houses in Papamoa and Bethlehem last month. Andre Moiri Ngatai, 33, appeared in Tauranga District Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary.

Ngatai was arrested on July 18 when police stopped him driving a Nissan Skyline through Tauranga and discovered a number of items stolen from a Tauranga property inside. The arrest came two days after a Calypso Drive resident arrived home to find two men attempting to steal items from his home.

Ngatai has been remanded in custody for sentencing on September 17.

Port buys multi-million property

The Port of Tauranga is extending its operations with two major purchases this week.

Port CEO Mark Cairns announced the port has purchased the Gateside Industrial Park in Onehunga, Auckland, from Goodman Property Trust for $37.2 million, to extend its MetroPort operations.

The Port also announced this week it has purchased half of the Port of Timaru for $21.6 million.

PTL is buying a 50 per cent shareholding in Timaru’s PrimePort, excluding its investment properties.

It is to lease PrimePort’s container terminal for up to 35 years, acquire the container terminal operating assets; and set up a new Port of Tauranga wholly owned subsidiary, Timaru Container Terminal Limited, to lease and operate the terminal.

Police appeal to Facebook users Police are warning people setting up Facebook pages to help motorists avoid checkpoints to think twice and make the wise choice.

Pages are popping up on Facebook sharing details of police checkpoints and hidden speed camera locations.

A page called Checkpoint Watch New Zealand has gained more than 23,000 likes and a Tauranga version of the page called Tauranga Cop Stops has attracted more than 560 likes.

Bay of Plenty Police road policing manager Inspector Kevin Taylor says the best way to avoid police checkpoints is to drive sober and not break the law.

“In a free democracy we have, people are entitled within the scope of the law to do as they choose.

“However, some choices we make, although lawful, are not necessarily wise.”

Whitebait season starts with warning Whitebaiters are out catching their dinner from this week as the 2013 whitebait season begins.

The whitebait season started on August 15 and runs until November 30 across most of the country.

The Department of Conservation manages the fishery and is promoting measures to sustain whitebait populations.

A guide explaining the legal regulations is available from DOC in Tauranga or online at: www.doc.govt.nz.

Biodiversity ranger Dan Rapson says whitebait are juvenile native fish, leaving the oceans and swimming upstream, and are a New Zealand delicacy.

He says New Zealand is losing more whitebait every year, mostly due to a lack of clean, healthy rivers and wetlands for adult native fish.

“Four out of five major whitebait species are now classified as in decline, including inanga, the most commonly caught species.”

“We’d encourage keen whitebaiters to assist with habitat protection to help maintain healthy fish populations, so the Kiwi tradition of whitebaiting can be enjoyed into the future.”

Unearthing battlefront Cover story

It’s time to dig through your attic and get your old family history mementoes to help build a stock of World War One memorabilia for the Century anniversary of the event next year.

Tauranga militaria collector Dave Cross and his colleagues are calling on the public’s help to unearth items and stories for displays to commemorate the war at a show this weekend.

Dave wants people to bring items of interest to the Tauranga Arms and Militaria Show at Greerton.

“This year, we are pushing for items for the World War One 100th anniversary that is kicking off next year.

So what we want to do is to get together letters, medals and so on, from then, to

put on display.”

The collectors are working with the Tauranga WW100 organising committee, to help them collect items to be displayed in a mobile ‘museum’ to travel around the region during the five years’ of anniversary commemorations.

Dave, who has collected military memorabilia since his youth, is hopeful of discovering a lot more material.

“People are still sitting on a lot of things from World War One – it keeps surprising me what turns up.

A lot of people are hanging on

to it for family reasons.”

Dave says the militaria specialists are interested in seeing all items related to the war – from letters and diaries to uniforms, medals, and other mementoes.

“The more items we have to draw on, the greater the choice in putting together displays that show how the district was affected by the war.”

The militaria show runs at Greerton Hall 9am-4pm Saturday and 9am-3pm Sunday. The show will include displays of firearms, Japanese swords, books, medals and other military collectibles. By Hamish Carter

Under the grill Struck by the concern that he couldn’t always eat cheese on toast when he left home for university, nine-year-old Haven Bellamy decided he needed to start learning to cook a few dishes.

It is the kind of mature, forwardthinking that seems to have stayed with the 21-year-old to help him earn the Bay of Plenty-Waikato apprentice chef of the year award.

On Monday he aims to go one better when he competes for the national title at the Culinary Fair.

From learning how to cook basic pasta and prepare salads, Haven quickly got the food bug, going on

to get his first cooking job at the Tauranga Citizens Club at age 15.

“I was fascinated by all the flavours and the colours in the different foods,” says Haven, who in two weeks’ time will complete his apprenticeship at Trinity Wharf hotel.

Up against the top apprentices from seven other regions, Haven knows he will have a challenge on his hands to take the national title – but he has been pouring in hours of his own time to prepare for the contest, where he has two hours to cook a two course dinner for four, including a salmon main.

And contestants can only use ingredients supplied.

“I have probably boned and filleted eight salmon now, and I have

done six or seven practice runs – coming in three hours before work starts or on my day’s off to run through everything.”

All Trinity Wharf chefs are taking part in competitions at the Culinary Fair, including head chef Simon Green, who is defending the mystery box title he won last year.

“We all kind of egg each other along, and a lot of practising and tasting and criticising each other’s dishes. Critiquing everything, making sure it’s all up to standard,” says Haven.

Haven’s goal is to work at a Michelin Star-rated restaurant “doing wicked food” and to become a head chef.

Game, set, action in Pongakawa After years of having sports and fitness training at the mercy of weather, Pongakawa School pupils can practise their skills and drills undercover with the opening of a new school action centre.

School board chair Joanne Black says everyone is excited about the new centre, which opened for use this week five years after the project was launched.

“It means the children will be able to take part in badminton, volleyball and squash and all the indoor activities they haven’t been able to do because of long distances to travel for training,” says Joanne.

“For many years we have had our practices outdoors all the time – it’s not ideal.”

Joanne says the $1.7 million centre has been achieved thanks to help from a “fantastic” board of trustees and help from many in the community. The bulk of the budget ($1.6m) came from grants including $684,000 from the Ministry of Education.

While some schools would have settled for the basic facility that the Ministry grant would have provided, principal Craig Haggo encouraged them to pursue a more ambitious project.

Over the past four months he community raised another $100,000 to provide a comfortable auditorium in the centre’s mezzanine with bleacher seating for 288. Joanne says the seating helps make it a key community centre – something she already sees with groups lining up to use it.

Squash is expected to be a popular activity with hopes that Sport Bay of Plenty will trial a pilot programme to introduce pupils to the game.

Following the centre’s opening on Friday, it has been a hive of activity for pupils and community members performing and competing in a week-long festival of sport.

Still tearing in at 41 Golden sands, blue water and rock hard wickets seem to be the dream equation for Matt Adsett, who is making his representational debut for the inaugural New Zealand Croatia cricket team this week.

With years of standing under the searing sun out in the field, Rarotonga should be no different for the 41-year-old, who is part of the maiden week-long international tour with the New Zealand Croatia team.

The side, comprising of New Zealand cricketers of Croatian origin, are currently touring the Cook Islands which sees them competing in a six-match T20 triseries with the Cook Islands senior and under-19 sides.

Speaking to The Weekend Sun ahead of departing earlier this week, the Tauranga father-oftwo says while never expecting to be making his representational cricketing debut at the ripe old age of 41, “anything is possible”.

“Kids will often not listen to what we say, rather they will copy what we do. So if we can provide some inspiration to cricketers in the Bay, and to the Cook Island community, while celebrating our culture I think that is a fabulous positive contribution to promote cricket,” says Matt.

A loyal, hardworking and passionate cricketer for the last 30 years, Matt plays out of the

Mount Cricket club and is excited to showcase his wares on both a cricketing and cultural level.

“It will be a great opportunity for cricketers with Croatian heritage in New Zealand to unite, to strengthen those bonds within the game; and at the same time we’ll be helping develop cricket in the Cook Islands.”

Along with Matt a number of high profile players are making the trip, including Northern District opening batsman Joseph Yovich – one of the founding members of the side. But the right arm medium fast bowler is not daunted by the task, saying nerves

will not get the better of him.

“It will be really good fun and a good learning experience,” says Matt.

“I think we get better with age and the collective wisdom of playing and coaching over the years definitely helps; and it is mainly preparing the mind and body for what comes next, so nerves have never really affected me, they have only made me strive for higher standards.”

The New Zealand Croatia cricket team will also visit schools and promote women’s cricket, as well as the game’s development, at grassroots level by playing two exhibition matches against the Edgewater Cook Islands national women’s side.

The real cost of council’s legal bills A couple of weeks ago an elected member raised the question of how Tauranga City Council’s legal bills had reached about $6.5 million in 2011.

He speculated on the number of hours this must have needed and the hourly charge-out rate. From memory, the speculation he said (he had in his mind)

was that the hourly rate was about $900 per hour. But after staff research we have been supplied with the real facts.

The facts

The council dealt with 25 legal firms in 2011 and the top bill went to Simpson Grierson at $5,270,407. But before you too get outraged over this, $4,427,609 was for property-related settlements. Likewise, $1,392,879 paid to Cooney Lees and Morgan comprised of $1,144,193 in property-related settlements.

The lowest earner was Hobec at $215.

The point is that it is very easy to jump to conclusions at council expenditure without finding out what’s really involved.

Council, by necessity, has extensive legal dealings including property; and ranges from dealing with government agencies to individual litigation. Council’s legal services are subjective to competitive scrutiny from time to time by the chief executive. There is no political input into how and where staff can procure any service.

No quick fix

At Projects and Monitoring committee, elected members were advised of progress staff are making with storm water flooding remedies. We have budgeted more than $100 million in the 10 year plan for this.

the ‘Integrated storm water project’ it will cover the entire city with two dimensional computer modelling that produces accurate detailing of where the water goes in rain events. It’s not a pretty picture in many areas.

It depends on how quickly the rain falls to be sure. But the situation hasn’t been helped by building on overland flow paths and allowing suburban infill. This is one case where it would be folly to rush in to provide a quick fix only to find the problem has been shifted downstream.

Complex situation

Elected members held a confidential workshop after the public part of the meeting where individual problem areas were discussed. It’s a very complex situation with possible remedies solving one problem and possibly creating another two. But this council is united in providing as effective resolutions as possible (we can’t provide absolute resolution to every extreme rain event) in as short a time frame as possible.

This is likely to take two-to-three years. But in the interim council will do what it can with short term flood prevention, such as providing sand bags, and looking at some local barricading and localised pumping to try and provide relief and peace of mind to residents.

As I’ve said before it was a great pity that previous councils, by majority vote, confused their priorities and spent ratepayer money on ‘nice to haves’ instead of focusing on core infrastructure like storm water and waste water issues. In oversimplified terms, one cause is the storm water pipes are too small and then it gets complicated. This project is set to be the biggest item in the next 10 year plan in my opinion. Once again no-one from the daily print media turned up for the public part of the meeting for what was an item of strategic importance to the city.

A follow on meeting is being called, as this column went to press, to come up with a high level strategy to bring some definite responses to those affected in the April downpour and to provide direction for policy in the event of further downpours and flooding.

It’s been four months now since these homes were flooded. Insur-

ance has repaired the damage in many cases but it is unlikely that insurance companies would continue to cover repetitive floods.

Not guilty

Elected members listened to the submissions to three draft management plans. The subject of Coastal Reserves and Mobile Vendors received a few submissions, but by far the most responses were to the so-called Freedom Camping proposal. Foisted on to Local Government by the Central Government it is not a well thought-out piece of legislation. MP’s should be made to sit and listen to the issues raised by submitters instead of us. For once we are innocent. For example it’s legal to park a camper van anywhere where parking is permitted – say on Marine Parade at the Mount – where there are no time restrictions; and provided the vehicle is legally compliant you could leave it there for years. You could even visit, have meals, watch TV, read and generally use it as your beachside base. But you can’t sleep in it at night. A nap during the day is probably okay. So how does the council enforce a ban, which is in effect, a ‘no sleeping at night’ ban? When is night? Say an enforcement officer knocks on a van door at 5am and the occupants tell him they have just arrived from Auckland.

Residents have horror stories of the activities of some occupants and their reported disgusting behaviour. The nub of the problem seems to be non-compliant sleeper vans that have no self-contained amenities – the combi/transit van types. Proper self-contained motorhomes don’t usually create problems other than intruding on ‘visual amenity’ for residents, we were told.

But there is no visual amenity at night, and the vehicle is allowed to park there anyway.

You are just not allowed to sleep overnight and what is the definition of overnight?

Just around in circles we go. Decisions will be made shortly on a very complex issue and some things are certain. There will be unhappy punters from one sector or another, ratepayers will have costs added for monitoring and enforcement – and council will cop the blame. Oh well. As the Governments whipping boy, we’ll just add it to the list.

After a lengthy and emotive debate, the Pohutukawa tree in Second Ave has had a stay of execution by majority vote and will be trimmed and managed. Boy do trees get people going.

Mount woman titled ‘A Caring Hero’ Home based

Clare Wilson’s dedication to helping feed hungry secondary school students has seen her be awarded the title of ‘A Caring Hero’ an initiative fronted by Visique.

The Mount Maunganui resident is one of 348 Kiwis from 18 towns and 12 cities throughout the country to become ‘A Caring Hero’ for her self-less effort.

Working as a nurse for more than five years at Mt Maunganui College, Clare has witnessed first-hand the effects of recession, and an increase in students arriving to school hungry.

A decile five school, Mt Maunganui College is ineligible for the KickStart Breakfast programme, so two months ago Clare founded the Kai Ora initiative, offering students in need a daily meal during interval.

She has not been given extra time or resources to manage the Kai Ora initiative, and deputy principal Tina Yule says Clare’s efforts make her a caring hero of the Mount community.

In support of the local hero, Visique Greerton wishes to congratulate Clare on her incredible works.

Optometrist Keith Miller says this was Visique Greerton’s first Local Heroes Campaign, and says they’re thrilled by how many people are perceived as heroes.

Socialisation and sausages on the sideline The week started well, with a trip to the rugby.

The boss decided I needed some socialisation on the lead, so we tripped over to Rotorua to mingle on the field and watch the grandchild, now aged 11, and is the size of the sky tower.

“Lofty”, we’ll call him, b’cos he sure towers above me, and grannie better watch her step, he’s catching up fast. Lofty was selected for the rep team to play in the Ellis Shield. The day started well, with me finding a nearly

whole sausage that had fallen out of someone’s buttered bread. Fearing that some poor rugby fan would stand on it and slip over, I picked it up and carried it in my mouth, until I found somewhere more appropriate to put it - which happened to be my stomach. It’s still there, as far as I know, and not causing anyone any problem. Score for the Labrador!

Just call it my contribution to community service – ‘Safer Communities Together’.

Then the day just got better, with Lofty’s team winning the first match by a couple of tries, the next by one try. Despite the ref making a dog’s breakfast of the timing, cutting the first half short by 10 minutes and then deciding to add 10 minutes to the second half – so our lads had to play three quarters of the game into the wind – they still won by a try. Result!

And the under 13s kicked butt too, so the Western boys retained the shield. Hip hooray. They all celebrated with more bread and sausages. But none of them - Flo were dropped.

Celebrating spring with a warm weather winner The temperatures have been higher than usual at this time of year and there is every sign of spring already.

With my new tunnel houses now complete I have been tempted to plant basil,

as temperatures are hitting 17 degrees during the day.

So it’s a bit hard to tuck into the pea soup I just made, as I expect worse weather at this time of year.

Even outside on the deck the microgreens are thriving – it’s not only the

love I put into them but the fantastic Bay of Plenty weather.

I have more micro greens than usual, so I thought, instead of soup, I would have a warm salad – something crispy – with an assortment of microgreens.

Welcome back to ‘the Glass Half Full’.

Firstly, I wish to send out a big thanks to all those who read my column last fortnight and took the time to send me your fantastic suggestions on who and what you would like to read about during the next few editions. This week there’s a little secret I want to share about a local business that’s starting to make headlines throughout the country. “It all started in the backyard of a Te Puna distillery 10 years ago.” That’s right. Gluten free Serves four

Salt and pepper calamari Ingredients 600-700g fresh calamari 1 heaped Tbsp Korean red pepper powder (Lim ga ne) 2 Tbsp freshly cracked peppercorns 2 Tbsp sea salt flakes Zest and juice of 2 lemons 4 Tbsp of fine polenta 1 tsp baking soda Large hand-full of fresh microgreens ¼ cup of olive oil Oil for deep frying Method Clean and gut the calamari by removing the plastic y spine and skin.

Score the inside of the calamari with the tip of a knife, and cut into bitesize pieces. Mix together peppercorns, red pepper powder, sea salt and the lemon zest. Now put half of this mix in a bowl with the corn flour, polenta, and baking soda. Toss the calamari pieces into this seasoned mix and coat well, then set aside. Mix a little water with the remaining flour mix to form a thickish batter then dip each piece of dusted calamari into the batter and fry in hot oil in a pot for about one minute or less. Depending on thickness of calamari it pays to test a piece out. Drain on absorbent paper and then sprinkle on the rest of the spice mix. Place on a pile of microgreens. Whisk together lemon juice and olive oil and drizzle over just before serving.

Celebrating growing success with family fun Delicious homemade chillies and chutneys, a sausage sizzle and barbecue, and a giant chocolate treasure hunt are among the birthday celebrations on offer to the public this weekend at Growers Direct in Te Puna.

The Te Puna gardening store is marking its second birthday with a free event day on Saturday from 10am-2pm – a notion sparked by their successful first birthday event last year.

Owner Paul Nielsen says their popular chutneys and chillies will accompany a free barbecue, and hundreds of Cadbury chocolate fish will be hidden around the centre in a treasure hunt for children.

“Everyone is welcome to come enjoy the event, and browse the centre.”

The birthday coincides with the launch of the centre’s new giant seedling area.

Paul says the area, completed last week, follows a dramatic growth in the number of people wanting to grow their own vegetables.

“The whole vegetable category is just growing continually, and we’ve had to expand to keep up with it. People are really into growing their own, either for self-fulfilment or a desire for organic produce.”

The seedling area boasts more than 20 varieties of tomatoes, as well as 25 varieties of chillies and peppers, “plus everything else”.

“It’s probably the biggest range of tomatoes grown in the Bay, we’re really excited about it.”

Paul’s passion for gardening, the store and its top quality plants, has resulted in the company’s massive growth in the last two years, with plant numbers going from 50,000 on opening day, to more than 100,000 today.

Plants are sold at wholesale prices, so customers don’t waste money on retail mark-ups.

Caring for the land with thousands of seedlings A land care group – made up of volunteers – is halfway through a winter planting project to establish more than 4000 native seedlings along Waitao Stream.

The Waitao Kaiate Land Care Group, of about 12 die-hard resident volunteers complemented by locals who donate time infrequently, is undertaking the project to help improve the water quality, and in turn, reduce sediment to Rangataua Harbour Protecting the near Welcome future of Kaiate Falls.

Bay. Every second Saturday during May to October, the group of neighbours is coming together to perform the winter cycle of their planting project. But volunteers work nearly year-round – locally sourcing and germinating seeds, raising seedlings in the group’s nursery, fencing land along the stream and planting during colder months.

President Dave Hooker says so far this winter the group has got nearly half of the plantings in the ground thanks to 20-plus volunteers turning up to the seven planting days.

“So we’ve planted and between 1500 and 200 plantings, so we’re nearly halfway,” says Dave.

And while the winter has been mild, it hasn’t made much difference to what the group can achieve, “except we cannot plant certain rugged areas where there is not much water”.

Dave says the group’s aim is to clean up the Waitao Stream and maintain the natural beauty of the Kaiate Falls, which will, in future, bring positive benefits to water quality of Rangataua Harbour.

“The Waitao Stream is the main water source into the harbour and it has pressure from the Te Maunga Transfer Station, the marina and from the waste water treatment plant.”

The group was born out of work by local hapu, with a marae at the bottom of the Waitao catchment.

Assisted by NZ Landcare Trust and NIWA, local hapu had been working to enhance the lower reaches of the stream and share their knowledge through workshops.

He says while local hapu have successfully planted and fenced along a stream bank on their property, other Waitao Rd landowners are now working toward the same goal. “This year, 4000 plants will go in – in the first year we would’ve had 1000 plants maximum,” says Dave. “This winter, we’re very pleased with the turnouts of people so far, and the progress we’ve made.”

Passion for fashion

Textile design students throughout the Western Bay have been in a race against time this week to complete garments and other entries for the annual Global Connexions secondary schools design competition on Saturday.

A total of 22 teams, consisting of 56 adults and 39 children, registered for Whakamarama School’s four-day possum hunt fundraiser at the weekend. Together, with the Family Fun Day, more than $4000 was raised for the school.

Event co-organiser Jean Wallace says 10 years on, since a group of Western Bay textile technology teachers launched the competition to give students a real life fashion challenge, the event continues to grow with standards going “from strength to strength”.

“It’s a good opportunity for the students to put their skills to the test in a realistic situation. They are given a brief with strict criteria and a deadline – and the rest is up to them.”

Jean says she is expecting to be wowed by some of the top entries, with the organisers this year offering two top competitors $500 scholarships for tertiary studies in the field.

The scholarships are being offered to celebrate the showcase event’s 10th anniversary, with organisers hoping to provide an annual scholarship if they have sufficient funds. Students will model their own garments or items on-stage at Baycourt. Details: www.globalconnexions.co.nz

Whakamarama girl biting into the ‘Big Apple’ with fashion With bursting suitcases and aspirations to be the next Kiwi fashion sensation at the ready, Nicole Jeffrey is setting her sights on the bright lights of New York City.

The 20-year-old from Whakamarama has recently been accepted to study fashion for a semester at Cornell University, New York, and is set to take grab the opportunity in the ‘Big Apple’ with both hands.

Currently in her third year at Massey University in Wellington, studying a Bachelor of Design majoring in fashion, Nicole

says fashion has always been her one true passion and being given the chance in one of the world’s fashion capitals is “amazing”.

“I’ve always been into everything fashion-related and that just continued through high school and on to university,” says Nicole.

Lions help young sportsman Earlier this year Papamoa 15-year-old Jack Bates was selected to represent the Ricki Herbert Football Academy in a New Zealand under-16 elite football squad to play in Barcelona and London this September and October. The cost of this exercise is $7500.

After Jack approached Papamoa Lions requesting for financial support, the club decided to donate $500 toward costs of the trip to play

football. Then, on the suggestion of Wayne Keereweer, it was decided the club approach the District Banking Trust for a Young Achievers Grant for Jack. Wayne followed this up and was successful in gaining $2000.

As result, president Dianne Hughes had great delight in presenting a cheque for $2500 to Jack.

He and his family are totally delighted and thrilled by the donation, which they received when they attended a recent business meeting.

Sadly, and within a few weeks, we will be losing our president Dianne. She and her husband Ted are off to explore that rather large island to our immediate west.

They plan on returning in 18 months or so.

Sports junky Fiona is new primary principal She was once the district co-ordinator for Sport Waikato – but now newly-appointed Tauranga Primary School principal Fiona Hawes leaves sport for the weekend.

Fiona has been teaching for 20 years but took a break in between to play sport and fill the role as Sport Waikato’s district co-ordinator. Now, she does both – leading Tauranga Primary School during the week and playing

sport with her three children at the weekend.

In the last four-and-a-half years of her 20-year teaching career, Fiona has been deputy principal at Tauranga primary but now takes on her “dream job” as principal for the first time. Fiona replaces former principal Jenny McNicol, who resigned on July 12.

“It was the next step – and one that I really wanted and was excited about having a go at – leading a school myself,” says Fiona.

Oscar is one of those lucky cats that has landed in a wonderful home.

After months on the streets as a stray, he was Oscar is happily brought into ARRC. A vet check showed that playing with one of he had severe dental disease and some rotten his toys. teeth that would have been very sore, although you would never have guessed it with him being such a smooch and happy chap.

ARRC’s team extracted his rotten teeth and found him a wonderful new home where he is very loved.

A healthy start at Gate Pa School Giving children a healthy start is getting easier at Gate Pa School thanks to an array of changes on-site which has earned it recognition for its healthy focus.

Greerton library goes political A decision by Tauranga City councillors to drop expansion plans for the Greerton Library is fuelling a political campaign by Tauranga City Library’s support group Friends of the Library.

“We are calling for people to not vote for councillors who will not support the library rebuild,” says Friends of the Library president Kate Clark. The campaign facebook page Greerton Library 900 was created this week, and a public meeting with key note speakers Bob Harvey and Beth Bowden is being held at Greerton Village Hall on August 30 from 12.30pm.

Under Bob’s leadership as former Waitakere City mayor, the now-gone west Auckland council built five libraries, and his address at this month’s Greerton meeting is titled ‘Smart Cities Build Libraries’.

“They [the Greerton community] have been asking for 20 years to upgrade this library,” Kate told Tauranga councillors this week. “It’s been in the annual plan, and the district plan for 10 years, and you keep saying ‘no’. “So unless you support the Greerton Library 900 campaign in this election, we are going to ask people to not vote for you.” The city council has

$1.8 million in development funds it has to use on the project, and adjacent commercial land to sell. It has the staff, the books and the shelving, says Kate.

“We think 20 years is just ridiculous. Over one third of Tauranga’s population is using a library on only eight per cent of the space. Over one third is using less than 10 per cent of the square metreage.” There is about 45,000 people living in the Greerton library catchment.

“So that’s what this campaign is about. After 20 years of being told ‘no’ – and certainly after 10 years of it being in the annual plan and being put off, and put off – I started getting calls from the community.”

Tauranga councillors cited flooding issues as the reason for again failing to act; and Deputy Mayor David Stewart spoke against the library expansion proposal. Former library supporters Bill Faulkner and Wayne Moultrie also said flooding was the reason they changed their minds. Councillor Catherine Stewart says the continued support for the new library by the councillors on the Greerton Library task force; Terry Molloy, Larry Baldock, Bill Grainger and Tony Christiansen, showed they were too involved to see the bigger picture. Mayor Stuart Crosby moved the issue be put off for a year.

Our blood vessels are some our most extraordinary tissue. Their main role is, of course, to provide blood flow to supply the oxygen and nutrients to individual cells. It may surprise you that our diets and general nutrient intake has a massive influence on both the health of blood vessels and on the actual structure of blood.

Ten years ago some researchers did a simple experiment. They got 30 volunteers to eat a high fat meal and noted a significant amount of stress on a major artery within a short time.

They then repeated the trial with a second group with the same meal but this time added supplemental vitamins E and C and noticed no adverse effects of eating the high fat meal.

The antioxidants seemed to completely prevent free radical induced stress from the high fat meal.

I have just got off the phone from

someone who has noted a real improvement in her eye health. Some time ago I had put her on a diet and supplements designed to help restore suppleness and blood flow to help with a skin condition.

I was targeting the tiny capillaries, which are incredibly vulnerable to losing suppleness mostly by accumulated free radical damage.

In her programme I used antioxidants including OPC’s, acai extract, bilberry with John Arts and vitamin C which are very effective in helping capillary function. The eye has a bed of some of our tiniest capillaries, some so small that red blood cells move in single file. We helped these to function better and both her skin and eyes have improved. Boobops fundraising for Florida

The Bay of Plenty Breast Cancer Dragon boat team The Boobops.

The Bay of Plenty Breast Cancer Dragon boat team The Boobops is on a fundraising mission for the International Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Festival in Florida.

The team is on a high – winning six gold medals and holding onto the national title for the third year in a row after competing in the National Dragon Boat Championships. “The team has amazing camaraderie on and off the water,” says captain Judith Butler.

“They are an extremely fit crew and train very hard under their wonderful coach Matt Cuttbert, who made it into the finals of BOP Coach of the Year in 2012.”

Judith says the team is now turning its attention to raising money so they can attend the International Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Festival in 2014. The festival is being held in October in Sarasota, Florida, and will host 100 breast cancer teams competing from around the world.

“Two teams from New Zealand, Cansurvive from Wellington, and Boobop from the Bay of Plenty, are attending the event,” says Judith. “We need to raise money for regatta fees, uniforms and accommodation if possible.”

The Boobops have been delivering phonebooks in the Te Puke area and recently sang to the residents at Malyon House for donations.

“Our newest paddlers are employed at Malyon House and they offered us a donation to entertain them for the afternoon. “Everyone enjoyed themselves.” The Boobops will be hosting a raft of fundraising ventures in coming months, including competing in the Taupo Half Marathon on August 4 and holding a movie night at Rialto Cinema in Tauranga on August 25.

After 45 years in the Mount Maunganui tourism industry Ted Davidson has seen a fair few changes in in the area – but there are some things he wants to stay the same.

Ted doesn’t want to see too many more towering apartment blocks, or exciting attractions like bungees “we’ve got the natural attraction on the beach”, and he definitely doesn’t want to see the last few remaining camps – including Cosy Corner Holiday Park – disappear.

“Camping’s definitely not dying, it’s growing again – and it’s such great family fun.” Ted was gobsmacked when he learned the board room at the new Tourism Bay of Plenty office is to be named after him, but accepts he has had an impact in the industry during more than four decades.

When he bought the holiday park in 1968 it was one of 14 in the Mount-Papamoa area. Now there are only four. As someone who had grown up with annual summer camping adventures it is something close to his heart. Ted, 82, passed on the reigns to his son Greg 24 years ago but still lives on-site across the road from the

beach, where for years his brand of Tauranga-made Ted Davidson Surfboards ruled the waves.

Back in the early 1960s, the former joiner-shop fitter was encouraged by his doctor to take up an active outdoors sport for his health, so he decided to pick up the hot, new trend of surfing.

It’s that time again – local body elections are coming up and nominations are being sought for candidates for the various councils throughout the country.

During their three year term, elected officials, as a collective, make very important decisions which shape the future of an area and its community.

So the Mayor of Tauranga has announced that if re-elected the first 100 days of 2014 will be set aside for restoring pride and the identity in Tauranga. Oh great.

For the record, Mr Crosby has been involved in local body issues since first being elected to council in 1986 (9855 days ago) and has been Mayor for the last nine years (3285 days).

It is my, however, my belief that from the day of first being elected he should have been constantly promoting the pride and identity of Tauranga, rather than now announcing what appears to basically be his only new re-election proposal for 2013.

Vision is what Tauranga needs and while this is all part of pride and identity, it is vision that this city desperately needs and has, in my view, been seriously lacking for the last 10 years or more.

This council needs an injection of vision, along with new blood for a new future.

Make sure that you get out there and vote these forthcoming elections because in the end we will end up with exactly what we vote for.

I love the Mt Maunganui hotpools. The position at the base of the mountain and convenience for Mt Maunganui residents is awesome.

Many people in Katikati were upset when Western Bay of Plenty Mayor Rob Paterson pulled out of next Monday’s public meeting where he and Mark Boyle of TePuke were to appear and answer questions on their candidacy.

On the way to being controlled We are well on our way to being a controlled state from overseas, and that is supported by our Government.How can a political party whose leader and co-supporter go to the Police to keep the tea cup tapes secret, from a public and media with huge interest, now try to impose a law which will allow spying on all Kiwis and their private conversations.

If you think that I am rambling without merit, then you should not have

any expectations of having a private conversation again. Publish your secrets and let us all hear why should those in power, and their underhanded tactics, be the only ones to hear your secrets.

This is how the West and the world is heading - where we are unsure and insecure about other people’s thoughts and what they may do.

We are controlled and well on our way to not having the freedom, and new world order is moving in and it is at our

back door.

If our system is so bloody good then why are we so powerless to having peace and harmony? Why do we hate others’ ideas and ways so much we wish to wipe them out and impose our own sick society. We are led by a money-grabbing power that places a man-made product “money” above all else, including fellow humans.

Two standards of fisher The Government must have rocks in its head if it thinks it can cut recreational snapper quota and not correspondingly reduce the commercial and customary take. For too long there has been two standards of fisher: those who conserve and are responsible; then those who, because of an attitude of race superiority, believe they can take more fish than the rest. These sorts of imbalances in our society must stop or there will never be racial harmony in this country.

If fish are in short supply, everyone must make a sacrifice. It is every person’s right to catch enough to feed the family. The commercial take should be the last considered. Look after the ordinary citizens first and equally, then apportion any surplus to commercial interests. Fishers, if you care about our precious resource, vote out these politicians pandering to a select group. They want to erode our birthright to fish freely and equally.

John Key’s two henchmen, Chris Finlayson (all things Maori) and Stephen Joyce (all things that are in John Keys ‘too hard’ basket) are both list members and hand picked. Far more useful than elected members who have to become sycophants and ‘yes men and women’ to their leader if they wish to hold their political positions.

Recognising responsibility to community

In response to the concerns raised in last week’s The Weekend Sun about the use of the agrichemical hydrogen cyanamide or Hi-Cane – the kiwifruit industry fully recognises our responsibility to the community and the environment.

Hydrogen cyanamide is vital for our industry. Without it, the amount of flowers – and therefore fruit – and would become uneconomic in many of New Zealand’s growing districts, especially in warm winters.

The 2006 Environmental Risk Management Agency (ERMA) review of this

product found the risks and costs to society and the community are very low.

It concluded hydrogen cyanamide provides massive benefits for the economy and poses only negligible to medium risks to the environment and human health and safetyrisks which are adequately managed by existing rules and industry initiatives.

We have been working with Bay of Plenty Regional Council, the community, and experts for the past four years to promote best spraying practice around New Zealand, including: At industry’s request, new

spray technology which minimises spray drift is now compulsory for Hi-Cane application; growers must put up signs 24 hours before spraying, notify their neighbours at least 12 hours before spraying and take special care around sensitive and built up areas; and if the wind conditions are more than a slight breeze, spraying isn’t permitted.

Hi-Cane is widely used in our industry and very few complaints have been received in recent years.

Don’t sharpen knives to Quiet shopping tops cut snapper size, quota Who’s actually behind this nonsense about reducing the recreational snapper quota. Is it the “Gummint” or the big commercial rape and pillage corporates?

If the large number of undersize snapps I’ve been feeding represents the health of the fishery, the future looks pretty bright. We should increase the quota, 10 sounds better, one per finger would be much easier to count.

May as well reduce the size while we are at it, as I am fed up with those

little sods, and unlike the big commercial thugs, I’ve been feeding them a small fortune of expensive bait for long enough. And if you are like Brian and can’t get a feed off a 27cm snapper you’re obviously a crap filleter or a guts.

We would be wise to be demanding more, rather than negotiating for less, to maintain what is our ‘God given right’ to go and get a feed for the family. Sharpen your knives fishers.

It was conducive to careful shopping.The strident caterwauling on the sound system of our local mall only makes one hurry to get out.

Competition casts bigger line for charity After starting out as a small competition between friends, a fishing competition, providing funds to Ronald McDonald House, will be bigger than ever with more than 100 anglers taking part.

On Saturday, August 31, the AV Logic and McDonalds Charity Fishing Competition will see up to 200 anglers casting their lines in support of Ronald McDonald House.

What started as an informal event in 2010, drawing about 40 anglers, is growing yearly as more anglers and sponsors catch wind of what the event is aiming to achieve.

One of the event co-ordinators, Mike Speed, promises the event will be “fun for all ages” with a key focus being on the social side of the event – as opposed to it being a “serious comp for serious fishermen”.

This is the advice of Sport Bay of Plenty recreation advisor Nikki Scott, who is encouraging everyone to make the most of the introductory have-a-go session on offer in the Play in Bay `Move it Month’ sports promotion.

Next week there are a range of activities on offer for everyone, including options for babies, preschoolers and new mums.

‘Baby Moves and Grooves’ offers the perfect introduction for babies to have fun with music. This programme is specifically designed for babies up to 14 months, using a range of equipment to

stimulate them through music, song and movement in a fun environment with their parents.

The programme is being offered at Arataki Community Centre on Monday from 10am-10.45am, (please note: this has time has changed from the programme brochure), and it costs $4 per session – but you can bring friend for free in August. Nikki says it has been designed by early childhood educator Janine Taylor to offer a class specialised for this age group.

Centre manager Matthew Strange says most preschool music classes are designed for and attract large groups of toddlers which can be overwhelming for babies.

“This smaller group allows

mums to meet other new mums and make the babies feel relaxed to enjoy the experience.”

Children aged 4-9 can take part in the Relax Kids programme on Wednesday 4pm-5pm at the Arataki Community Centre for $8, and covers movement, stretching, breathing, visualisation and affirmations.

I’m a bit of a pedant about the English language.

It’s not an awfully popular trait and it certainly irritates – and on occasions embarrasses my friends – but, nagdarnit, someone’s got to stand up for good old fashioned values like intelligibility.

Sadly, sometimes we pedants feel like the tide of history is rolling the wrong way and threatening to crush under its mass of general stupidity.

That sounds a bit harsh doesn’t it?

I don’t want to come across as all superior. Or condescending (that means to look down on others). But this week I’ve got a beef, not with people who use the language incorrectly, but with the dictionaries, who once used to be my friend.

I know you only simply have to Google a word these days but I still like dictionaries that come in that tired old format we used to call books. The ones with paper rather than screens. They are a calm repository of knowledge and, unlike Wikipedia and other internet sources, they usually get things right.

But, it would appear, no longer.

One of my big English language bugbears has always been the word literally.

It is, literally, the most mis-used word you will ever come across. “Literally” means “in a literal or strict sense, as opposed to a non-literal or exaggerated sense”, and is the opposite of “figuratively,” which means “in a metaphorical sense”.

The problem here is that “figuratively” is a crap word. It could be seen as just a wee bit pretentious. So people keep saying things like: “my head literally exploded when I heard John Key’s latest brain fade”. And we pedants say: “No it didn’t, or you’d be having a hard time talking to me with exploded bits of brain all over the place. You mean it figuratively exploded”.

But now we’ve been betrayed. By the dictionaries.

And not just any dictionaries. The big ones. A number, including Merriam-

Webster and the revered Oxford, now include the “informal” use of the word literally, the “informal” use being the one that is not only totally incorrect but also says the opposite of what it really means.

The Oxford puts it this way: “It is used for emphasis while not being literally true”. Oh the irony.

If you now say something is literally true you might actually mean... that it’s not literally true.

Pedants of the world, unite and weep.

And with that, since my blood is now literally boiling, I better move on to something more musically inclined and, by fortunate coincidence, there’s a concert coming up just down the road from the Watusi Country Club which I’m most excited about.

Yep, it’s party time again at the Te Puna Memorial Hall when a group calling themselves ‘Too Many Chiefs’ plays there on Sunday, August 25. Too Many Chiefs?

Never heard of them? Fair enough. It’s a name they have adopted for just this tour. But I suspect you’ll have heard of some of the band.

All four are singer/songwriters from Wellington: on the keyboard is Wayne Mason, the man who wrote New Zealand’s perennial favourite ‘Nature’.

That was, of course, a long time ago.

Since then Wayne has been a Warratah and released a string of solo albums. On guitars, and possibly banjo, mandolin and more is Andrew London, a frequent visitor to these parts with his regular band called Hot Club Sandwich. Writer of several albums of witty swinging Hot Club Sandwich songs he’s currently put the band on hiatus while pursuing other projects (like this one).

Then there are a couple of equally experienced singers, albeit less known in the Bay: Rob Joass has been a mainstay of the Wellington scene with long-standing Irish group Hobnail Boots as well as the more recent alt-country outfit The Shot Band; and there’s Laura Collins, recently at the Rotorua Blues Festival with The Back Porch Blues Band and now also

Wallis Clothing in Mount Maunganui is celebrating the upcoming spring and summer seasons with an exclusive fashion show in support of Mauao Volleyball Club Inc. On Friday, August 23, the Mount store is holding a fashion show, featuring some of the latest New Zealand fashion from brands Wallis and Moko, to raise funds for the volleyball club who are heading to compete in a national competition in Auckland the following week.

A cash bar and nibbles, including a silent auction will be available. Auction items comprise of a styling evening at Wallis, which includes a $250 voucher, bubbles and nibbles for a group. Other items up for grabs include jewellery, sports memorabilia, harbour cruises and more.

Store owner Anna Mountford says, this spring, there is a strong monochrome fashion theme with black and white everywhere.

Anna says there are also some “gorgeous brights” including cobalt, tangerine and yellow.

“It is always an exciting time leading into the summer season and we have already sold out of many summer styles as people get excited by the thought of the warm times ahead.

“It was a great event last year and we are hoping for even more fun this year. It is definitely an event for both the girls and the boys, as Moko has some great menswear on show.”

Tickets, cost $20, and are available at Wallis Clothing, Mount Maunganui Rd. All proceeds go to Mauao Volleyball Club.

OBLIVION

With Winston Watusi

Oblivion was the first of several to hit cinemas in the year of sci-fi (Elysium, After Earth, Colony, Gravity, et al) and was duly slammed by just about everyone going.

Reviewing it on the small screen seems a little unfair. The film is undoubtedly flawed, but it also has much about it that is good.

It’s certainly a very good-looking film, making excellent use of its otherworldly Icelandic scenery (you may recognise some of it from the start of Prometheus). Throw in

a space ship crashes containing the cute woman Tom has been dreaming about, and all sorts of reality is revealed to be...not so real after all.

The main problem is the wandering screenplay, which goes on for way too long and tries to be too smart and arty, robbing the climax of suspense and excitement while making the various plot reversals confusing.

Even as you watch it you think “this could have been so much better...”

some cool futuristic hardware and various relics of a now-wrecked Earth and you have an interesting landscape.

Story-wise, Cruise and Riseborough are just about the last people left on a postapocalyptic world, overseeing the final removal of the planet’s water for the new Earth, now located on a moon of Saturn.

But, as it turns out, there are others still kicking around, led by the reliably dignified and knowledgeable Morgan Freeman. Then

The current Hollywood adage that everything goes better with a little ‘Rock’ fails completely with GI Joe 2: Retaliation . Putting Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson into the Journey To The Centre of The Earth and Fast And Furious franchises provided a breath of fresh air. Not so here. The First GI Joe film was pretty naff but looks like a veritable masterpiece beside the second, which dispenses with the fun bits (the groovy suits, the silly weapons) and tries, totally unsuccessfully, to be a bit more “serious”. There are a couple of good action scenes, and a disinterested Bruce Willis climbs on-board as the “original” GI Joe. Dire.

Lenny and Abbott are garbage men to the stars in Beverly Hills. They’re proud of what they do: they’re “in the industry”, albeit behind the scenes. This is Hollywood Trash - called Garbage in America - and the two likeable schlubs find themselves enjoying the mixed blessings of minor celebrity after finding Cuba Gooding Jr’s Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Jerry McGuire at a rubbish dump. There are some low-rent celebrity cameos – Daryl Hannah, Michael Madsen, William Baldwin – and the whole thing wanders around in a laid-back manner as the pair fall out over Lenny’s dreams of stardom.

I’m always on the outlook for something weird, and hopefully wonderful, and Sushi Girl , despite its R18 for “sadistic violence” (which I’m going off ) looked the ticket. And indeed it is, ripping gleefully through a Tarantino-littered landscape with its unique identity intact. The titular girl is the naked and fish-adorned centrepiece at a dinner where four crims “welcome” a fellow thief back from jail. He did six years after their failed jewellery heist.

The jewels are still missing and things get fractious quickly. Think a cross between Reservoir Dogs and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, but not so good.

Valhalla Rising is a bleak austere film from Nicolas Winding Refn, who recently found commercial success with Ryan Gosling in Drive. His follow-up to that, Only God Forgives (also with Gosling) has received extreme, and not necessarily positive, reactions. Clearly those who object to its obtuseness are unfamiliar with the director’s back catalogue as both Bronson and this are stylised, difficult films. This stars the great Mads Mikkelsen as One-Eye, a mute and possibly mythical warrior who treks around striking (Icelandic again?) landscapes in 1000AD while the film ponders, mainly wordlessly, mankind’s emerging humanity. Or something. Rigorous, if not exactly fun.

Looking for Hortense (M) Offensive language, sexual references and drug references Kristin Scott Thomas stars in this French comedy as a wife who puts pressure on her husband to perform a straightforward task: solicit work papers from his state councillor father. However, the old man and the son despise each other. Damien (Jean-Pierre Bacri) is a professor of Chinese civilisation who lives with his wife, Iva (Scott Thomas), a theater director, and their son Noé (Marin Orcand Tourrès). Their love is mired in a mountain of routine and disenchantment. To help keep young Aurore (Isabelle Carré) from getting deported, Iva gets Damien to promise he’ll go to his father, a state department official, for help.

36 It may have taken 33 years – but Lightwave Gallery director Ken Wright has picked up his paintbrush again – this time to deliver a “futuristic” gallery exhibition in December.

‘Wind it up Wrighty’ After photographing New Zealand’s landscape for 10 years, Ken set out to prove his artistic talents and has produced his first painting since the 1980s.

His painting, which took 60 hours to complete, depicts one of many scenes from a non-fiction story based on the early years of ‘Raygun Rex’ – a character based on fellow artist Nick Eggleston.

The idea to produce a series of paintings was sparked by fellow Tauranga artist Rob Murdoch whose “steam punk” work features at Lightwave Gallery and is inspired by the later years of science fiction – an era when ray guns, rockets and time travel were a fantasy.

To give provenance to Rob’s “out-of-this-world” collection, Ken wrote a series of journals to make the exhibition more than just an art exhibit.

Tauranga artists were invited to display their work to give a sense of reality to the emerging fictional story of ‘Captain Rob Murdoch – The Dark Side of The

Mount’. Ken says he and his wife, and co-director, Karen Wright want to give visitors the feel of walking onto a film set, while retaining the concept of selling art. Captain Rob’s study and his tele-krono transportator room has a six-foot robot ‘Orion’ – a must see for children of all ages, says Ken. Last Friday, Ken’s painting was selected as one of only 30 finalists chosen from 130 entries in the Rotorua Museum Art Awards.

Now Ken is working on the second scene from the story and will continue to produce more paintings for a joint exhibition with Nick Eggleston in December.

Encouraging musical abilities Bay of Plenty Symphonia’s biennial Rising Stars Concerto Competition this year features four outstanding young musicians in Bethlehem College students Anna Lee (violin), Janet Reid (violin), Dominic Lee (cello), and Tauranga Girls’ College’s Anna Wright (trombone).

This year’s event is the third staged by BOP Symphonia and is aimed at encouraging Bay secondary school students’ musical abilities. Organiser Merle Fausett says the talent displayed by these contestants points to an exciting contest. Originally, each contestant submitted their choice of movement from a standard concerto and their submissions were

viewed by a panel of judges, who selected the four finalists.

Under the direction of music director/conductor Justus Rozemond, each player will be assessed by a panel of judges, two from Auckland and the third from Wellington.

Yes ‘We want to sell for less’ How often have I heard that? Well actually never. Everyone wants to maximise their sale price- but not everyone helps their agent to achieve this for them.

It is really important in the current market where buyers are choosy to present your home well. Yes that does mean a little work and I will present some useful clues.

Firstly de-clutter! No, don’t

just shove it all into a hall cupboard. Invariably your prospective buyer will choose that cupboard to open.

Buyers need to picture themselves at home here.

Not in a comfortable laid back on the couch, remote and beer in hand feet up on the coffee table and the TV blaring way. They are looking for the complete “homely feel” with them and their family in it. They want to picture themselves and approve all rooms (even if that means in their mind, refurbishing).

So step one: get the kids to return home and reclaim their junk! Store some in boxes stacked away in the shed, garage or off site if you are a serious collector! Perhaps sell some on Trademe or give it to an op-shop.

And while you are de-cluttering remove or reduce the number of those very personal photos. And for you and your agents peace of mind remove any very valuable artefacts. Store out of sight the nudes or any memorabilia that may offend! You don’t want to put up barriers and create reasons for people not to buy when something as simple as de-cluttering can make such a profound and positive impact.

Generally it is not even expensive- it just takes a little time and effort.

When you are on the market your buyer may call your agent to request an appointment to view at any time.

The power of age Exposed before the almighty God Most Western Bay churches have their pews packed with them, and church leaders this week learned how to make the most of this “hidden treasure”.

Fresh Horizons co-organiser Donald Hegan says there had been a great response from the 80 participants taking part in this week’s conference that focused on the theme of ‘Unleashing the Power of Age’.

“It was very informative and inspiring, with everyone getting a lot out of the talks on how to keep the growing number of ‘second half of lifers’ actively involved in ministry.”

Donald, the St Paul’s Presbyterian Church minister, says with the aging population it is critical to keep older members of the community active and engaged – both for their own benefit but also to benefit from their experience.

He says the conference’s theme was chosen to help churches find ways to encourage their aging parishioners to keep active in the church or broader community. Donald says a conference on a similar theme will be held next year which he hopes will attract more people.

Speakers covered topics from leadership development to maintaining great couple relationships, the benefits of missionary work, positive ageing, planning for retirement and how senior and younger generations benefit by working together on projects. Keynote speaker was Reverend Dr Richard Gentzler, from the US, who spoke about ageing and older adult ministries.

Finding God’s healing Weston Carryer has travelled extensively throughout New Zealand and overseas bringing God’s healing to thousands of people, who have received miracles and answers to prayer.

Weston is a genuine Kiwi, former dairy farmer, now living in our great city of Tauranga.

His passion is to see people meet God and for God to meet people’s needs.

I feel sorry for celebrities hounded by the press. Whether its non-flattering photos or dishy stories, some media look to ‘dig the dirt’ on the stars to sell their magazines.

It’s one thing for God to know everything; that’s just what God does.

But it’s quite another thing for God to know me. He has searched me like a computer virus checker and He knows me completely.

He knows my selfish thoughts and self-centred desires. He knows all about my laziness, vanity and pride, as well as the evil I would wish on others. He knows enough about me to have me shot down in flames. I am totally exposed before the Almighty, Allknowing God… and yet, He still loves me.

In the hands of the general public this knowledge about me would be devastating news, but in the hands of Jesus there is no threat. He knows me and loves me all the same. There’s a reason they call this good news.

The threat of being exposed across tomorrow’s newspaper must add an edge of fear and vulnerability to these prisoners of their own popularity.

But there’s a greater threat than this, and it’s not just aimed at the rich and famous.

In Psalm139 David made a scary admission: “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.”
