Flashbacks and second comings Andy Warhol once famously said: “They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself ”. Well if it wasn’t famous before, it will be since he’s quoted here.

RR researchers have discovered the population is tired of the names of the week. Just like certain parts of our geography, it’s time for a change.

The current day names are effectively meaningless, so here are some practical solutions.

We’ve come up with some alternatives that better suit those particular days: Monday is to become Firstday.

Tuesday is Rubbish Day. Not much we can do about that.

Wednesday is a silly name, hard to spell. It becomes Middleday.

Thursday is Payday. Those who head to the pub on Payday probably will still call it Thirstday.

Friday is Lastday.

Some of you already know this as Throw a Sickie Day. (Or maybe it should be Sun Day, since that’s the day your favourite paper arrives).

Saturday, Sportday.

Sunday, Restday.

The good news is, rubbish men everywhere will rejoice because under the new system, they’ll only have to work one day a week.

The renaming of the days reminds of our new decimal time system, which has been explained in previous columns.

We’ve come up with some names for the units of time.

There’s not much we can do about the 365 days in a year. But we can decimalise the units currently known as months, weeks, days, hours and minutes.

The smallest measure of time will be a Jiffy. There will be 100 Jiffies in a Tad. A hundred Tads makes up a day (the only

name we are retaining, because its actual time remains the same as the old time system).

The old seven-day week will be replaced with a 10-day measure, called a While. There will be 10 Whiles in an Age and 10 Ages in a Year.

Which is bad news for our renaming of the day names, since there are only seven. So back to the drawing board on that idea.

Anyway, you catch my drift.

The important thing with the Rogers Decimal Time system is that when you tell someone you’ll: be there in a Jiffy, popping out for a Tad, haven’t seen someone in Ages, or you’ll be a While in the bathroom – people will know EXACTLY how long you mean.

Now all we need is to quantify a Smidgeon, and we’re sorted.

We also plan to change the way you drive.

NZ is one of the few countries in the world that drives on the left. However, we have a better plan than changing to driving on the right.

At the same time as we change the days of the week’s names, we will also change the road rules so everyone drives in the middle of the road. (For at least half of Tauranga drivers, there will be no change).

Please indicate if you support these changes. Oh hang on, half of you don’t indicate either.

Flashbacks

And speaking of time, this week has seen some interesting flashbacks. What a great year for comebacks.

First there was Georgie Pie, resurrected

by McDonald’s, then Bata Bullets has announced they are striding back into style.

Stubbies, the iconic shorts of the seventies apparently never really left us, although many males are in denial. It’s entirely possible there are men out there still to come out of the closet in their stubbies. There also seems to be some incestuous connection between the iconic shorts and the infamous Beige Brigade. That is an investigation for a later date.

This week, we were treated to voices we haven’t heard since the nineties, David Strassman and his ventriloquist talents – Ted E. Bare and Chuck Wood. They put on two great shows at Baycourt on Tuesday night.

Our thoughts are with those in the Philippines suffering unimaginable tragedy and chaos.

On the cookie trail It’s that time of year again - Cookie Time ambassadors, like Andre Hart, are donning the iconic cookie t-shirt and putting their best sales pitches to good use.

For the next two months, the ambassadors are taking to the streets ahead of December 25, with buckets of cookies for a quick and easy Christmas treat.

Andre, along with Jordyn Gregory and Bridget McCarty, are taking orders throughout November before shifting into overdrive and making deliveries up until December 23 – in “a pretty hectic two months”.

“It’s a great cause because the since the organisation started the Cookie Time Charitable Trust $1.4million has been raised for the Dyslexia Foundation, which was founded by the two Cookie Time founders, brothers Michael Mayell and Guy Pope-Mayell,” says the University of Canterbury third year student.

“It’s great to have that social responsibility and give back to the community.”

And it seems it’s not just the range of flavoured cookies a number of customers have their eye on. “People have already asked how much I would sell the shirt for, which I can’t do. They recognise the shirt straight away and they just know it.”

Brakes put on outings

Changes to child restraint laws enforced this month are causing havoc for one Western Bay primary school which is now struggling to offer its junior students educational outings.

As of November 1, children in vehicles must be in an approved child restraint until they turn seven. The previous mandatory age was five years old.

It is a move aimed at increasing child safety on New Zealand roads, but Katikati Primary School deputy principal Anne Morriss says it’s preventing her organising ‘highly beneficial’ trips requiring travel for junior students, due to the expense of booster seats and bus fares.

“The implications for us are huge.

As a school, this poses two issues: it

will be a great expense [to provide booster seats for those without them], and where are we going to keep all of these seats?”

She says the ratio of children to parents will also decrease, because most private vehicles can only fit two seats in the back.

Anne says her school has to ensure all students under seven have seats to travel anywhere – “including those from low socio economic backgrounds who may not own their own seat”.

“I personally think it’s a real pity because what is going to end up happening is nobody will plan anything that is an outdoor education opportunity.”

Anne says while some schools can charge parents for excursions, “for many of our families this will be prohibitive, and we will not be able to afford a bus”.

Katikati Primary offers three trips

per year to its junior students (14 classes) but Anne says “this will probably be down to nil”.

“Our children are not going to get learning opportunities outside of the school, which are so beneficial – even our local heritage museum is too far to walk,” says Anne, who is looking to offer activities within walking distance.

The school will also have to purchase three booster seats to have “on tap” for children needing transport in an emergency or when they’re ill.

“We’re disadvantaged in that we’re not in the city and we do have to travel for things.”

An approved restraint is one that suits the child’s height and weight, as specified on the seat. This can be a harnessed child restraint, a full backed booster seat, or a half booster cushion.

Woman drunk, child in car

A Tauranga mother is facing drink driving charges after a three car crash on Totara Street.

Police were called to the crash about 8.40pm last Friday to find a car which had crashed into two stationary vehicles, stopped at the railway crossing waiting for a train to pass.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the 39-year-old female driver produced a breath alcohol limit of more than 950 micrograms at the scene. The legal adult limit is 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

“Worse was the woman’s eight-year-old daughter was also in the car and sustained whiplash as a result of the crash.”

Barbecue site sizzling concern

Residents of The Mall in Pilot Bay are concerned about the proposed location of a second public barbecue on the Pilot Bay foreshore.

The Weekend Sun understands a number of residents met with Tauranga City Council staff this week to discuss concerns over the smells and sounds produced by public barbecues.

One of The Mall residents, who wanted only to be known as Jack, says the proposed location is close to houses along the foreshore. He says it is completely different from Marine Parade where the barbecue opposite Banks Avenue is three times further away from neighbours’ residences.

Mower racer raring to go

The woman at the centre of a lawn mower racing accident at Omokoroa No.1 School is out of hospital and asking when the next race meeting will be held, says Bay of Plenty Lawn Mower Racing Club president Adam Pendred.

The 56-year-old Auckland woman was taken to Tauranga Hospital after coming off her mower during the school’s annual Omokoroa Ride on Mower Race Day at the weekend.

Adam and race organiser Bronwyn Carter both believe she is the first person to be taken to hospital in the event’s 10 year history.

Bronwyn says two machines collided and one of them rode up over the other and landed on the woman. She was treated and discharged.

Classic Flyers smear campaign

Police are being called to investigate an online smear campaign against staff and management at Mount Maunganui’s Classic Flyers.

The aviation museum and charitable trust CEO Andrew Gormlie says an email and Facebook campaign criticising the business and personally attacking employees came to a head on Tuesday.

Power outage in Western Bay

Areas of Tauranga and the wider Western Bay lost power for two-three hours following reports of a bang at Transfield’s Haywards substation in the Hutt Valley about 11am on Tuesday.

Transpower corporate communications manager Rebecca Wilson says the outage was due to an issue on the HVDC link during commissioning of Pole 2 and Pole 3.

“It dropped the frequency so much it caused power outages throughout the North Island.

There was a similar event about a year ago in Huntly,” says Rebecca.

The Civil Aviation Authority is investigating the claim a Mount Maunganui woman was sprinkled in what she says smelled like human excrement while sitting at her patio last Saturday.

Marion McCarthy was having lunch when she felt what she thought was a brief shower of rain. She looked up and saw an Air New Zealand plane go overhead.

“My initial thought was I must go and get the washing off the line – until I looked down and saw this brown stuff,” says Marion. “[The sound was] like a fleeting shower of rain. When we hear the rain start we hear the spits on the barbecue cover. I heard that first, even though that was further away from me. I sort of looked up and was aware that was on me.

“It was just brown splatters, that’s all. It wasn’t big lumps of something, just liquid brown. It did smell like poo, yes. I even

went over to my neighbour to see if he had got some, and he said it smelled like poo.”

Marion contacted the airline to let them know something had happened, and in response, Air New Zealand sent her a picture of bird poo.

“It was too much for a bird – and it’s the wrong colour. They don’t do brown stuff do they? They do white stuff.”

CAA’s contact manager corporate communications Mike Richards says there is a seasonal element to the McCarthy’s complaint.

“This is a time of year when ducks fly high. And they do unfortunately off load.

It happens every year,” says Mike.

“We are just checking to make sure it’s not an isolated occurrence. If it is, then obviously that makes it something else. If there are a number of these that have been happening then it’s probably quite consistent with the seasonal issue.

“We treat it like an aviation-related concern, and we follow them up to make sure there’s no problem. The issue for us is if there is something wrong with an aircraft, we want to get it fixed.”

First public access to new bridge Tomorrow is an open day on the Tauranga Eastern Link project, giving the public the first opportunity to inspect one of the major works in the project: the Kaituna River Bridge.

People will be able to walk on, across, and under the 186metre bridge from 10am-2pm.

As well as providing the opportunity to see Te Puke from the deck of the bridge, the open day also offers people a chance to get close to the earthmoving machinery being used in the construction of the 25km highway project. There will also be helicopter rides for an aerial view of the country’s major new roading project.

The four-laning of the six kilometres from Te Maunga to Domain Rd is the most visible part of the $455million project, with the public driving along it each day and seeing changes taking place.

The open days throughout the project give people the opportunity to view progress on the 16km of the eastern link being built on farmland and away from the public eye.

The Paengaroa roundabout at the eastern end of the new highway is expected to open in March, removing the notorious SH2/SH33 ‘T’ intersection.

It’s also the site of one of the major archaeological finds of the project – an entire ancient settlement where Maori once grew vegetables, says TEL project manager Wayne Troughton.

The project’s relationship with its Maori history is through the Tauranga Eastern Link Tangata Whenua Advisory Group – representing six iwi along the highway’s route; and who handle all of the

On Sunday, parking is at the Generation Homes land on Doncaster Drive, Papamoa. From there free buses will take people to and from the event at the Kaituna River bridge.

Methanol-munching monsters are set to power their way into the Bay of Plenty’s summer after one racer dared to dream big and create a world first of jet boats competing within a stadium.

This week, event organisers confirmed ASB Baypark will host round two of the New Zealand Jetsprint Championship on January 25, 2014 – a decision they believe could transform the sport on a global scale.

The unique sport, boasting Kiwi origins since 1981, sees jet boats with crews of two race individually against the clock through a twisting series of channels in less than a metre of water, providing fast-paced action for excited spectators.

And what began as a pipeline dream two years ago is about to become a reality for current jetsprint world number one and multiple New Zealand title winner Leighton Minnell.

“We had to get over a few hurdles, tick a few boxes; but we have got there.

“It has been a goal of mine to take jetsprints to a stadium, like they do in American with supercross [motorcycle racing]. So why not do it in New Zealand?”

Leighton says seeing his idea coming to fruition is “a dream come true” and he cannot wait to test out the track and raise the bar in the sport’s profile.

“Jetsprint racing is an iconic Kiwi sport – so it seems only fitting that, as founders of the sport, the venue for the first stadium-based jetsprint race event is on home soil.

“It’s a numbers game and

the sport is very exciting. The families love it because they feel the water on their faces from the force of the boats,” says Leighton.

Jet Sprint Bay of Plenty spokesperson Matt Minnell says the event sees the New Zealand Jet Sprint Association team up with Jetsprint BOP and Bay Leisure and Events Limited to bring the world-first spectacle to Kiwi audiences right here in the Bay. As a result, a complex network of five metre-wide channels ranging from 40-70 centimetres deep will be constructed with 1400m3 of dirt trucked out of the stadium and replaced with 2000m3 of fresh water.

“Nowhere else in the world is there a track inside a stadium. It’s a world first – and everybody we speak to say they wouldn’t always go to the speedway but would be keen to see this,” says Matt.

The Bay of Plenty tug-o-war will see teams gather in the Fraser Cover carpark on November 22 to see who has what it takes to pull the flag over the line.

There will also be children’s rides, a bouncy castle and lolly scrambles, along with the roar and sparkle of the White Ribbon riders on their massive Harley Davidsons in a community response to stamp out family violence.

Bay of Plenty Family Works co-ordinator Heather Beddie thinks the event is a wonderful incentive for the community to raise awareness of the issues around family violence.

“It’s a great incentive for our men to be stepping forward and saying they are against violence to women and to children.”

Heather has been in her new position for four

weeks and beforehand worked as the Bay of Plenty District Health Board child protection and family violence coordinator.

Being a new face on the block, Heather is watching from the side-lines for this year’s tug-o-war event. “It will be my baby next year.”

As part of the White Ribbon campaign, groups of the White Ribbon riders from the Patriots Motorcycle Club, comprised of current and former members of the armed services, will travel the length and breadth of New Zealand from the November 15-26.

Support riders will be picked up from different regions along the way, creating a mass procession from town to town.

The ride portrays an inspiring message – groups of men from all walks of life can come together with one voice to show their love, support and respect towards women, says Heather.

For the last month, pupils at schools and pre-schools in Tauranga have poured hours into decorating and creating life stories for their cardboard buddies, which today are being adopted and cared for by adults in a reminder about the hidden abuse problem.

Child abuse prevention campaign group Child Matters began holding Buddy Day three years ago in Hamilton, using life-size cardboard children to raise awareness of the issue of abuse – and the role every adult has in keeping children safe. This is the first year it has been expanded into Tauranga schools, with 162 buddies made in the region.

Selwyn Ridge Primary School Year 6 teacher Rochelle Watson says her pupils are enjoying the project, taking their buddies on outings and school camp. She’s describing it is a good way to prompt discussion on the subject in the wider community and to remind children to keep safe.

Tauranga’s 162 buddies represent 20 per cent of the 813 substantiated cases of child abuse in the region last year.

Carers – including Mayor Stuart Crosby and ex All Black Buddy Allan – got their buddies at the event’s breakfast launch at Trinity Wharf this morning.

Papamoa Primary School’s all-girl cricket team is out to beat the boys when they begin playing in Western Bay of Plenty’s junior cricket grade tomorrow as the only all-female line-up.

The Pink Caps, consisting of nine girls aged 7-11, will take to the field for the first time tomorrow in the Saturday morning cricket competition at Gordon Spratt Reserve. Team captain 10-year-old Bella Ebbett says it’s “quite special” to be the only girls

team in the grade. “It proves that girls can do sports that boys do.”

Bella says the team’s goal this year is “to have fun” and beat an all-boy team.

“Some of them are nervous when some of us bowl a wicket,” says Bella, who hopes to play for the New Zealand women’s cricket team, the White Ferns, when she grows up. I just like the adrenaline rush when you come through the pitch, or when you’re getting runs, or when you whack the ball out and get a wicket.”

Children’s parade invite School children are invited to take part in Bayfair Shopping Centre’s Santa Parade on November 24.

Schools can register with Bayfair before November 20, and then send a team of children in Christmasthemed outfits to walk in the parade.

Weaving flax on show

An exhibition showcasing the artistry of flax weaving is happening this weekend at Te Wananga o Aotearoa.

The exhibition, running from November 18-21, showcases the work of 16 raranga (flax weaving) students.

Work from kete (small bags or kits), to korowai (feathered cloaks), will be on display for people to see what is made during the raranga (flax weaving) courses.

The exhibition runs 10am to 3pm daily – and from

Tonya Fines, 43, is the latest New Zealand sports representative in the Bay of Plenty after recently being selected for the National Amateur Bodybuilders Association New Zealand squad, thanks to a consistent breakthrough year.

Competing in the women’s figure 40-plus division, Tonya has racked up a string of silver and bronze placings at this year’s regional competitions before receiving a letter of approval to step up to international competition.

Mother Nature always wins Like most fathers, mine gave his advice freely as I was growing up. No doubt he believes I should’ve listened to more of his advice. But one point that did stick was that “Mother Nature always wins, eventually”.

Let’s put this in context. My dad is a typical staunch livestock farmer from rural Taranaki, who started his career in the earthmoving industry.

Last week at Tauranga City Council, elected members were briefed on the city’s stormwater situation. We were brought up to speed on the highly emotional issue of people being affected by flooding around the city; and we looked at models showing how floods generally occur in Matua.

Mount/Papamoa ward councillors Steve Morris and Clayton Mitchell then met with some residents in the Mount, who are still recovering from April’s floods.

Experts are predicting flood

events will occur more frequently in the region, along with extended dry weather periods.

So, we have to change our approach to dealing with flood issues in the city.

Addressing inner city flooding by installing larger-size pipes is like trying to treat diabetes by wearing larger-size pants.

Instead of defending flooding with underground pipes, I believe we need to adapt to living with flooding.

Let’s minimise the harm from flooding, should our defences not have the capacity to handle massive volumes of water from heavier rainfall events in the future.

In my last column, I referred to our need to stay focused on the outcomes we want to achieve; and then find the most costeffective way of achieving them.

I’m pleased to see the city’s new developments (such as The Lakes

and Papamoa), adapting to future flood events by designing canals and roads to draw the impact away from the houses.

Our council needs to work with current at-risk households in established communities, who are dependent on an underground stormwater network.

But we need long-term solutions that are proactive, rather than continuing to respond after an event happens.

This is a conversation I look forward to having with you as we develop Tauranga City Council’s next 10 year plan.

I’d rather see the community invest in assets that grow in value, rather than assets that try to beat Mother Nature at her own game.

We will fail and Mother Nature will always win, eventually.

Putting carbo-loading into perspective I was talking to an Ironman and triathlon coach and competitor the other day, who says he has often wondered why so many competitors at events like the Taupo Ironman are overweight – despite all of the hardcore training.

He’s just lost a significant amount of weight by upping the amount of protein, and mainly healthy fat, he eats and reducing simple carbs.

A great lesson for all exercisers, hardcore – or otherwise – is carbo-loading must be kept in perspective. And although hugely relevant, immediately prior to, during and after training or racing, it is a real trap for the rest of your day-to-day life.

A very unforgiving equation covers this – you need a certain amount of glucose from carbohydrate each day for energy. If you exceed this amount, excess is stored as fat. With our current reluctance to eat fat, many of us over-consume carbohydrates. Hey presto, our obesity and diabetes epidemics are flourishing.

So, yes, get those glucose stores powered up when you need it – and also ensure you get this crucial glucose equation right by eating a sustaining balance of protein, fat and carbs during the rest of the time.

I hate to see really dedicated exercisers still struggling with their weight. If you are one of these, try

this for a couple of weeks – really cut back on simple carbs like bread, cereals (except bran and rolled oats), rice, muffins and fruit juice.

Focus on eating more protein and fat-rich foods like lean meat, fish, seafood, nuts, seeds and eggs. Eat complex carbohydraterich foods, like green vegetables (cut back on potato and kumara), and limit fruit to two pieces a day.

In my experience, these few changes may mean you are likely to be pleasantly surprised. Your feedback on this is appreciated.

My long-time friends, Godfrey and Margaret Mackersey, gave me a tour of their impressive Whakamarama farm last Sunday. As we plodded along in the Toyota ute the old faithful farm dog Smoke watched every step from the rear platform.

In a Bay of Plenty Rugby Union first, the 25-year-old player is currently training under the watchful eye of the union’s sevens programme – after making the 1237km journey from her home city of Pune late last month.

Ketaki, a rugby enthusiast for the last eight years, admits to being drawn to the more physically demanding sport after playing judo and football – despite a lack of popularity back home.

“When I first started playing rugby we had no opposition for four years, so we just played among our teammates.”

A member of the Indian women’s rugby team, she is the first foreigner to be offered a place in the programme on an 80 per cent scholarship. In the Bay of Plenty, she is pursuing being a player, as well as taking on a coaching development programme.

But not in her wildest dreams did she ever imagine a passion for the uncharacteristic sport in India would land her in what she labels

Training twice a day, whether slogging it out in the gym or around the Bay’s outdoors, the diminutive player is not deterred by New Zealand’s tough approach to all aspects of the sport – even her fellow teammates.

“The girls’ attitudes are great – and the way you play is more physical than what you get in India.

“They play real hard and play with their heart; and it’s really good to see and watch.

“If they are playing with 100 per cent you then want to do the same thing.”

Not guaranteed a spot in the summer sevens side, Ketaki’s goal is to hone her skills as much as humanely possible before passing on the tips to her Indian teammates.

An intensive selection process has seen Tauranga Girls’ College students Freya Boyle and Felicity Tomkins, along with Mount Maunganui College’s Lydia Verschaffelt, make the final 24.

The Year 12 and 13 students are excited about the trip, but they still have to raise $8000 before they leave for London, England, in July.

“It’s very exciting, but now we have to come up with fundraising ideas,” says Felicity, who is considering busking and musical performances, along with seeking sponsorship.

Freya, who has taken drama for almost 10 years, is a big fan of Shakespeare. She describes him as a genius and is excited about the opportunity to learn from directors and crew at the globe.

“He’s created so many amazing works in the English language – which, despite their age, are still really powerful today.”

The two-week trip to Shakespeare’s theatrical home includes a series of workshops and culminates with the 24 Kiwi actors performing at the prestigious international resource.

Year 13 student Freya has her mind set on a career in theatre – and is heading to Wellington next year to get involved in the theatre scene. She plans to study the subject after returning from London.

A support group is about to be set up in Tauranga providing a ‘buddy system’ for people with epilepsy to open up about their feelings.

Epilepsy Bay of Plenty Support Trust is setting the group up to offer epilepsy sufferers with someone to talk to when they’re feeling down.

Mandy began painting full-time after her son was born nine years ago.

Holland Beckett Lawyers senior partner Bill Holland says community involvement is a “culture we very much share” at the Tauranga firm.

The 61-year-old is the individual winner of the Community Service in Law award, announced at the ninth annual New Zealand Law Awards in Auckland.

Bill’s dad started Holland Beckett Lawyers 76 years ago, with Bill coming on-board in 1976.

But Bill says his partners are all individually involved in the community.

“The firm itself does an awful lot of voluntary work and it’s because my partners and I happen to think that’s what we should be doing. It’s a culture we very much share.”

The award recognises Bill’s extensive pro-bono efforts in Tauranga, including his major role in the Acorn Foundation – which he set up 10 years ago.

After standing down from the trust’s board two years ago, Bill is president of a recently-established national association – Community Foundations of New Zealand Incorporated – which aims to help nine country-wide foundations by sharing resources and

establishing standards.

As well as his efforts to Acorn, Bill’s accolades include being Tauranga Boys’ College Board of Trustees chairman for 12 years and being awarded the Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2012.

Bill says “life is more complex” nowadays – and it is helpful to have a lawyer and accountant on-board certain committees.

“If you’re talking about any serious committee dealing with any serious matters, it’s just nice to know what the correct situation is without having to rush off to speak to lawyers all of the time. If you just happen to have one there then it’s very helpful.”

According to Bill, the best thing a lawyer can be doing is avoiding problems before they arise.

“If there is a lawyer there, you can sort of get the correct steerage right at the outset.

“You don’t often find committees, which have got a lawyer on them, having any legal problems simply because they’ve steered away from them at an early stage.”

Bill, who says it is the first time he has won Community Service in Law award, was nominated by an anonymous client.

Law Commission visit The Law Commission will be visiting Tauranga on Tuesday, November 19, to hold a public consultation meeting at Historic Village Theatre from 9am-11am.

The commission recently published an issues paper on New Zealand’s burial and cremation laws.

Quirky display The team at Zazz.

A quirky new art exhibition displaying children’s artwork is at Fashion Island in Papamoa.

The exhibition – called Zazz – features art, photography and painting, one-off re-purposed furniture, homewares and handcrafted jewellery which has been mostly made by children from the Bay of Plenty. Schools will exhibit free of charge for two weeks each, so children can showcase their work to the community. The exhibition is open 10.30am- 4pm, Thursday to Sunday.

Documentary screening The Te Puke Forest and Bird group is hosting a free screening of the documentary ‘Thin Ice: The Inside Story of Climate Change’ at the Masonic Lodge, Oxford St, Te Puke.

Thin Ice producer and director Simon Lamb embarked in 2006 on a six-year journey to four continents, documenting scientists working in fields as diverse as paleontology, physics, oceanography and computer science. The screening is on Monday, November 18, at 7.30pm.

Bombs away – call for annual knitting event The call is going out for keen knitters, crocheters and sewers to help make next year’s Greerton yarn bombing an even greater success than its debut this June.

Katikati is now the owner of a gigantic grey eel already entertaining youngsters at the Little Blue House on Talisman Drive.

Plans are being stitched up to grow Greerton’s yarn bombing into an iconic, even annual, event.

But ask most parents paying child support about upcoming changes to calculations of it, and you’ll probably be greeted with a shrug.

Tauranga father’s support group Kidz Need Dadz is beginning to run workshops to educate people about the Government-approved changes to the way child support will be calculated from March next year, which will be administered by the Inland Revenue Department.

Group trustee Sheila Ewart believes the changes are a positive move, and she’s pleased with how the new calculation will recognise the contribution of many parents who have children about a third of the time. But her group’s courses have been partly prompted by concern of the lack of people’s awareness of the incoming changes.

“Almost everyone I’ve spoken to knows nothing about the changes,” say Sheila, who will run the first workshop next Wednesday (November 20).

“This is going to affect a huge number of people and we just want to help people to understand how it will affect them, before the change actually comes in in April.”

Sheila says the workshops will help separated parents understand the changes to the child support payments system – including how the new payments will take account of both parent’s income, the age of the child/ children; and the time spent caring for the children.

Up until now, parents have had to care for children 142 nights per year before support payments were reduced. But this has been cut to 102 nights “which will affect many parents”.

“It is a much fairer calculation than the current percentage of gross income less a

The spectacle of last month’s NZ Mural Contest and Arts Festival – with children slipping, sliding and running over top of it during the week-long event – convinced Katikati Open-Air Art buy it for the community.

KOAA president Steve Graveson says creator Sam Dunlop “obviously missed the memo” about creating bird sculptures for the competition – a rule designed so the winning creation could join the town’s Bird Walk near Uretara Stream.

“It wouldn’t be the sculpture competition without a Sam Dunlop creation,” laughs Steve.

Sam says the idea to create an eel came from wanting something that will one day suitably grace the banks of the Uretara Stream – and a sculpture to withstand the rough and tumble of children.

“It’s interactive absolutely; to me a lot of sculptures should be made for kids going down them or for people utilising them.”

Named Wairakau, weighing “about a tonne”, the sculpture is made of a welded steel frame wrapped with chicken mesh and carpet, covered with ferro cement and plaster.

Greerton Village Mainstreet manager Victoria Thomas wants to grow it to become an iconic national event, with plans to increase the number of trees decorated from this year’s 21 to 35 – including many much larger trees.

“We envisage it to be the ‘wearable arts’ for trees and yarn bombing,” says Victoria, who is excited to hear people say how the yarn bombing, Illumin Art, and cherry blossom festivals have drawn them to Greerton for the first time in many years.

Next June’s event will have a story book theme, with knitters being encouraged to come up with creations inspired by books, such as ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’.

Those wanting to find out more can attend a meeting on Tuesday at the Food Garden in Cameron Rd, where they will learn which trees are available to yarn bomb, sponsors requirements and other details.

Preschooler pool party Concerns about the low number of young Western Bay children who are confident in the water are being diminished through a new programme giving toddlers and babies a head start in swimming.

Sport Bay of Plenty water safety advisor Denise Jones says the Water Babies programme launched this month is already encouraging greater confidence in the water. The programme involves six free ‘learn to swim’ lessons for young children.

Denise says with so many liquid-filled play spaces on our doorstep, it is important to teach water confidence at a young age.

“Water Babies gives families a fun and safe way to be active together,” says Denise.

Launching this month for an initial pilot for 80 children, the programme has been set up to provide lessons for those who cannot afford weekly lessons, with an aim of giving families the confidence and knowledge to enjoy the water with their underfives. Parents and caregivers are given a 15 minute

About 30 children, and their brothers and sisters, cut out and coloured in paper dolls and sent them away to be a part of the chain, which was made up of more than 45,200 paper dolls and reached more than 4500 metres in length.

Among those enjoying the lessons, is 22-month-old Peter, with his mother Aroha being surprised at how much he enjoyed his first time in the pool. “The lessons are a great opportunity to help keep young children safe around water,” says Aroha.

Paper dolls draw record came from children’s book ‘The Paper Dolls’ by Julia Donaldson.

“We tried to make it real fun and they coloured in as many as they liked. Basically, all of the kids needed to do was go online, download the paper doll chains, which was three dolls connected together, and colour them all in.

“Then all of the kids wandered off to the post office and posted their entries.”

The idea is also to raise money for children’s charity Save the Children – a worldwide charity working to improve children’s lives in education, health and nutrition, child rights, protection; and to help those with HIV, AIDs, and in emergencies. Children received certificates for their record-breaking success.

While the advent of modern technologies has opened up a new world, it certainly does our bodies no favours.

Our increasingly sedentary lifestyles, combined with high electromagnetic exposure, can have a very detrimental effect on the body’s functions.

Prolonged static posturing incurred while hunched over computers, laptops and gaming devices when combined with increased pressure from sitting, watching TV and using the car more often has a very negative impact. In conjunction with putting excessive loading on our spine and joints, which are placed in incorrect alignment, the poor old muscles are overworking themselves trying to maintain some sort of equilibrium.

The obvious result of this is pain arising from the overloaded spine and musculoskeletal system, which

is akin to pulling your finger backwards for a few minutes and see how you would feel.

Then try eight hours of that.

Many probably don’t realise that all systems in the body are inter-related and ‘talk’ to each other, hence creating a ‘ripple’ effect.

For example, the resultant inflammation causes a chemical change in the body, which in turn creates a more acidic environment that then affects other organ functions creating related health problems.

Pills are not your answer – if you have pain, remedy both the mechanical cause of your problem and identify your particular triggers to prevent recurrence.

Pain is your body’s warning system, so listen to it and don’t lose your functional mobility.

New approach to dementia care successful Patients at a Te Puke age care facility are taking less medication and suffering less aggression and distress following the facility’s new approach to behaviour management.

The new approach, which involves education and understanding, is being undertaken by staff in the Camellia Wing at Carter House who deal with patients suffering

severe dementia. In conjunction with the Mental Health Service for Older People team, staff are being taught and encouraged to analyse incidents individually, to understand why it occurred and to use the information to try and prevent it from happening again.

Team leader Bev Carnie says this is an alternative to using standard medication for treatment.

“Antipsychotic medication is often given after the event to calm a situation and manage incidents of aggression either towards staff or other residents.

“As an alternative we are providing education and support to healthcare staff to better understand dementia and why residents with advanced dementia may act in a certain way.”

These are oligomeric proanthocyanidins, commonly known as OPC, found in the pigments on dark red grape seeds; and resveratrol, a very different compound found in skins of both red and white grapes. I also mentioned the unique health properties of the acai fruit, which is native to the Amazonian rainforest. For the next three weeks, I’ll dig a little deeper into the restorative and protective qualities of OPC, resveratrol and acai.

OPC is arguably the most powerful dietary antioxidant and is particularly beneficial in reducing oxidation of lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol, known as LDL cholesterol.

Free radical damage to trapped cholesterol is the first step in forming artery-blocking plaques. Additionally, OPC attaches itself to the proteins (collagen and elastin), of our blood vessel walls helping to restore suppleness and strength promoting healthy blood pressure and blood flow.

Latest research suggests OPC also helps to reduce immune system production of highly inflammatory messaging chemicals, called cytokines. These include the cytokine which is actively involved in many inflammatory diseases, especially autoimmune diseases.

Another benefit of OPC is it helps regulate respiratory immune responses with respiratory problems, such as hayfever and asthma. I find OPC works best when combined with synergistic compounds, especially acai and resveratrol. Just because a product is called OPC, or grape seed extract, does not guarantee its quality.

Drifting duo head to Hampton Tauranga’s drifting couple Jodie Verhulst and Drew Donovan return to Hampton Downs this weekend, as the national drift series begins, facing the prospect they’re likely to face off soon.

After a consistently strong performance during the season in the Pro-Am series, where she finished third, Jodie is moving up to join partner Drew in the premiere D1NZ Championships series.

“Moving up to the pro class will be a huge big step, but it’s good to push yourself,” says Jodie.

Drew, who finished 11th in the six-round series, is hoping work

he’s done on his car to add speed and responsiveness will be enough for him to finish strongly and make the top eight in the series.

Despite achieving a series of podium finishes in the Pro-Am class, Jodie says her goal for the season is learning to compete at the higher level.

“It will be a massive learning curve. It’s a completely different level but I’m focussed on learning everything I can – it’s about speed, proximity and aggression.”

Jodie can’t wait to come up against Drew, saying it will be fun and feels she could give him a good run.

“It is great being able to learn off a pro-level driver, but sometimes you are more receptive to your partner’s advice than others.”

They’re the only Western Bay drivers competing at the opening round, with Cole Armstrong – who finished 10th in the D1NZ last season – missing the Hampton Downs round.

Cole, who has been based in Western Australia, will be competing in a new, later model Nissan Skyline this season.

Maketu’s Ben Belcher – who finished 13th in the top series – is taking time out to rebuild his RX7 and crew for his former Te Puke school mate Geoff Muggeridge, who is competing in the Pro-Am in his FC RX7 Mazda.

Geoff is doing work on his car and will not compete until the next round in Whangarei (December 14-15).

The American dream

Stars and stripes show American motoring enthusiasts are in for a treat this weekend with more than 200 cars on display at the annual All USA Day car show at Wharepai Domain.

The Bay of Plenty Mustang Owners Club event, now in its 11th year, will feature all sorts of cars – with Mustangs displayed alongside Chryslers, Dodges and Oldsmobiles.

“There will be everything from Model As and Ts to classics, custom cars, hot rods – there will be all sorts,” says club president Dave Flett.

The connection between Dave, the president of the Bay of Plenty Mustang Club, and long-time all-American enthusiast Graham is all through their cars – original ‘64-and-a-half ’ model Mustangs which rolled off the factory two days apart in May 1964.

For the purist, the 1964-and-a-half is the iconic Mustang – and despite an increase in importing classic American cars from the US, the original edition remains a rarity in New Zealand with only about eight in the country.

Graham and wife Debra have been long-time Mustang enthusiasts, getting the bug for the car about 15 years ago when they used a 1966 notchback hard top for eight years as their everyday family car.

“It’s a little bit like Levi’s and Harley Davidsons and bubblegum. It’s an American icon,” says Graham.

When it came to upgrading, it was always only going to be another Mustang with the couple setting their sights on an original model.

Their enthusiasm for the project quickly faded when the Mustang arrived.

“As soon as we saw it, we knew it had major problems,” says Graham, who was so disappointed in the rusty carcass he did not touch it for six months.

After getting over his initial disap-

pointment, Graham got Matamata Paint and Panel on the job, rebuilding the car from the floor up to a rolling body with doors. Following this, Graham spent endless nights in his shed completing the restoration, which he laughs about, saying it now contains little more than two of the car’s original front doors. But the result is no laughing matter, with the stunning convertible winning many awards.

Meanwhile, Bay of Plenty Mustang Club’s head honcho Dave had always fancied the idea of restoring a classic car, so he bought an original hardtop off a collector in Auckland when he had the chance three years ago.

“We ended up breaking down on the motorway on the way home because the fuel gauge stopped at quarter.”

So began a long restoration job on a budget – but he’s more than happy with the results.

“It’s in a different league – it’s not a show car like Graham’s, it’s a driving car,” says Dave – whose wife Julie wants to bring back a recent model convertible when they head to the US next year to Mustang’s 50th anniversary car show.

Along with Graham and Debra, Dave and Julie are among five Tauranga couples taking part in the trip that will include a drive along Route 66 in the latest model Mustang. By Hamish Carter

A contingent of at least 20 Corvettes is also expected to take part, with a group from the Auckland Corvette Club heading down every year for the weekend.

Dave encourages anyone with an American origin car to put it on display – saying car registrations are open on the day from 8am.

The event, which is open to the public from 10am, with prize-giving at 2pm, will be held in the Spring St carpark if it rains. Money raised from entry to the event ($2 public, $5 family, $5 cars), will be donated to the Child Cancer Foundation Bay of Plenty. For details, call Dave on 027 555 4420.

Te Puke youth employment push Plans for a programme to match Te Puke school-leavers with employers and stop many young people leaving the district are moving forward thanks to good interest from many businesses.

Businesses representatives this week heard Otorohanga Mayor Dale Williams talk about how his programme has cut youth unemployment to virtually zero in the Otorohanga area.

The Te Puke Youth Employment Programme is based upon Dale’s programme and is being pushed by the Te Puke Fast Forward group.

Chairman Graeme Walker heard Dale

talk about his programme and sought to start the initiative in Te Puke. To match people with jobs, the initiative’s organisers are asking employers what roles they have available and what skills and training someone needs, so the programme can help guide young people into vacant jobs.

“We are not talking about charity from businesses. [And] By actually helping match local school-leavers with job opportunities, it’s to their advantage.”

Organisers will also track school leavers in 2014, by providing regular follow-up for those who are not in education or employment to re-engage them with work.

Quick - plant the veggie patch Summer is just around the corner, and soil temperatures have warmed up.

If you are quick, you can still plant your summer vegetable patch. Tomatoes, peppers, chillies, cucumber, courgette, pumpkin and squash can all be planted now, along with sweet corn, eggplant and melons. Even the smallest garden can grow tomatoes and salad greens in pots, or just slice open a bag of Tui Vegetable Mix or Tui Tomato Mix and plant directly in the bag.

The water is so appealing on summer days, but what would you do if you got in too deep? Would you know what to do to keep safe?

These are some of the questions a 30-minute water safety introduction, being run by the Teach Our Children to Swim group, will give you the answers to next Saturday.

Run as part of the Play in the Bay Water Month activities, the session will be one of the first initiatives from the new non-profit organisation TOCS, which has been set up with help from swim school operator Jenni Clarkson. It aims to improve water safety standards by providing subsidised swimming lessons in Tauranga schools.

The water safety sessions will be run in four 30-minute classes (10am-noon, November 23), with plans to offer them regularly to meet demand.

“We are targeting anyone from four years old up, including adults.

“It’s for anyone who wants to learn basic water safety skills.”

The session covers deep water safety basics – including staying safe in the water and dangers to look out for – with all children aged four-nine needing to be accompanied by an adult.

The session is at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic’s Windermere pool. Bookings are essential, (call 07 544 9901), with a gold coin charge.

A fun team aquathon, aqua aerobics, a swim club carnival, dragon boating, kayaking, master swimming and canoe slalom are among other activities on offer during the next fortnight.

Scientists to present Psa-V findings next week Kiwifruit growers have an opportunity to hear the latest Psa-V research from leading Italian, Chinese and New Zealand scientists during two separate events next week.

Organised by the New Zealand Biotech Association, Italy’s Dr Marco Scortichini and Dr Milena Petriccione will host seminars between 2pm and 5pm on Tuesday (November 19), at The

Orchard, 20 MacLoughlin Drive, Te Puke. This will outline how the industry is successfully managing the disease in their country, where Psa devastated orchards prior to appearing in New Zealand.

Growers can help change industry Kiwifruit growers have the power to change their industry if that’s what the majority wish, says the president of New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers Inc. “The current structure of the kiwifruit industry has been chosen by growers – the majority of growers. If the majority of growers want to make changes to their industry, they can and will,” says Neil Trebilco.

He is responding to calls from the Independent Kiwifruit Growers Association Inc that NZKGI endorse its call to stop what IKGA describes as “the continued privatisation of public good funded kiwifruit varieties and to seek to have those varieties, along with the Zespri brand, put into a trust for the benefit of all kiwifruit growers and NZ Inc”. Ross Hart of IKGA says: “Taxpayer funding was responsible for establishing the kiwifruit variety breeding

programme that produced the successful Hort 16A [Gold] kiwifruit variety”.

“A further $35.7 million has been given by the Government to a joint venture between Plant and Food Research and Zespri to breed new kiwifruit varieties.

“If the kiwifruit industry is deregulated those kiwifruit varieties could end up in foreign ownership, as happened with apple varieties when the Germans took over ENZA,” say Ross.

“We think that the exclusive licences that we understand Zespri has, in respect of each of its new varieties, should be put into a trust for growers – and not held by Zespri.”

But Neil says growers have the chance to have a say on the shape of their industry’s

future through the current Kiwifruit Industry Strategy Project.

“This project is far reaching in its scope as we look to how the industry, including our marketer, needs to be focused for the future to maximise grower returns. During the consultation phases of the Kiwifruit Industry Strategy Project, I would encourage all growers to make their views known,” says Neil.

“New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers Inc is the mandated grower body, which represents the more than 2600 growers in the New Zealand kiwifruit industry, who voted overwhelmingly [87 per cent yes vote] to fund NZKGI with a levy to represent their interests.

“To the best of my knowledge, Mr Hart and Mr Ted Meade [also of IKGA] have no mandate to speak on behalf of the industry. As with all growers, their views will be listened to – but claims they have wide industry support are not backed up,” says Neil, who also says all growers “are encouraged to make submissions to the Kiwifruit Industry Strategy Project”.

veterinarian Dr David McDonnell says the mis-management of pint-size farms can be both costly and heart-breaking for owners, who bought their block to fulfil a Kiwi dream and live ‘the good life’.

That dream can quickly turn into a nightmare, however, when owners see their stock starve and suffer, as a result of feed shortages.

Seminar speakers will fill any knowledge gaps, so owners can manage their blocks with more confidence, says David.

“Lifestyle farmers are often intelligent, successful people in their own businesses or careers. They want to enjoy their animals

and do the right thing by them; but often, when they buy a block, no-one gives them a handbook on what to do.”

The seminars, featuring an expert panel from Ballance Agri-Nutrients, Agriseeds and Merial-Ancare, will explore the scientific relationship between soil, pasture and animals; and will explain how owners can get the most out of their pastures through effective grazing management.

Stu Muir is the fifth generation of his family to farm and fish the banks of the lower Waikato River Delta and he’s working hard to stabilise the local whitebait population for future generations.

Muir’s childhood home is a 200 hectare dairy farm just shy of the Waikato River mouth. This is where he learned Maori from his neighbours and acquired an extensive knowledge of the river’s history from his father.

“Historically and culturally, it’s a very important area,” he says.

“Any waka going north to south had to pass through this farm...

Pre-1860, it was like State Highway 1.”

It’s also here that Muir decided to focus his environmental efforts - taking on the role of custodian of the land - when he returned home from travelling with his wife Kim Jobson.

“My grandparents used to drink from the back of the farm,” Muir says. “It’s not an unreasonable proposition that our children can at least swim in the creeks my grandparents drank from.”

Whitebait lay their eggs in the highest spring tides, where the grasses get inundated, so whitebait stocks are one way to measure a creek’s health.

While Muir’s four primary-aged children can still kayak, shoot ducks and make huts on the river bank - just like he did as a kid - whitebait stocks have dwindled in recent decades as the waters of New Zealand’s longest river have fallen victim to the impacts of koi carp, factory and nutrient outflows, and hydro-dams. Muir, 43, is continuing the work of his late father Andy Muir. Thirty years ago, Andy Muir started fencing the waterways. From his late teens, Stu Muir has cleared introduced plants from the swamps and waterways.

crown and iwi co-governance body called the Waikato River Authority.

Muir and Jobson used the funding to continue work they’d done for years out of their own pockets - clearing noxious species, reopening creeks and banks, creating tidal ponds and planting out natives.

Last week, Muir and Jobson received notification of their third grant.

Waikato River Authority trust fund manager Sean Newland says Muir is a pioneer.

“People have seen the work that Stuart’s done and others along the river are picking up on that. People look over the fence, they see what someone else is doing... and they want to be a part of it.”

In this last funding round, some of Muir’s neighbours also applied for grants to restore the wetlands on their properties - and were successful.

The Muir farm runs 500 milking cows.

Muir says it’s possible to be a profitable farmer while putting the environment first, but it requires determination and hard graft.

Newland says anyone can plant 10 trees - it’s the grit to plant 3000 in swampland that sorts the hobbyist from the environmentalist.

Contractors work a digger and Muir works a chainsaw, while Jobson and friends plant. Aka Aka Primary School, south-west of Waiuku, has an ongoing relationship with the wetland and visits

to help with planting and watch progress on the whitebait spawning habitat regeneration project.

Among them on a recent visit was pinkgumbooted Hazel Muir, 6. She enjoys catching fish in the wetland and making islands from logs, and says this is one of her most favourite places in the world: “It’s more favourite than home and school”.

Sandy Muir, 8, is his Dad’s whitebaiting buddy. He’s looking forward to the day when he can fish for whitebait in the creeks on the farm again. Taite Muir, 9, helps plant trees in between paddling adventures in the creeks.

Lexi Muir, 11, rides her horse to the wetland and spends a lot of time there during duck-shooting season. She and her siblings fish for environmentallydestructive koi carp - they get $1 a kilo for the fish (which is then turned into fertiliser).

She is looking forward to spending time in the wetland when she is her father’s age, knowing she helped restore the waterways. Lexi says the Muir children are proud of their parents’ efforts.

“We’re not only making it better for the whitebait. It’s cleaning up the whole environment and if more people could do that, it’d be really cool.”

Growler a hit this summer Papamoa Super Liquor is offering people the unique opportunity to wet their whistles with the “freshest craft beer”.

A new Growler Station has been installed at the Papamoa liquor store, offering fresh craft beer.

A Growler is a two litre glass vessel, which is fast becoming the “best friend of all beer lovers around the country”.

and is great value for money, with refills costing $14.99.

“They keep for up to a week or more, if you treat it nicely and keep it in a cold, dark place,” says Janine.

Once opened, you’ve got as long as three days to make good use of it – but Janine says it’s best to finish it in one sitting.

Tip – before returning to the Growler Station for a refill, rinse it thoroughly with hot water and no soap.

The station has four 100 per cent natural and fresh beers available on tap, including two Stoke beers

from Nelson’s McCashin’s Brewery – Pilsner and Amber ale – and local brewery Mount Brewing Co’s Indian pale Ale and Honey ale.

With craft beer becoming “more and more popular”, Janine says it is best enjoyed fresh and straight out of the keg.

Easy peasy breakfast I love oats!

In the weekends I enjoy taking my time slow cooking a bowl of delicious porridge topped

with healthy fruits and yogurt. But during the week I don’t always have the time.

Instead, I make overnight oats. These are delicious and so easy.

The night before I put oats, and almond milk in a bowl.

I add in some dried fruit, chia seeds, some vanilla and some cinnamon.

I then chuck it in the fridge and leave it overnight. In the morning, the oats have soaked and you’re left with a bircher muesli of sorts!

Stir in some yogurt or grated apple and you’re good to go. Instant oaty goodness!

I’m especially enjoying this with the warmer weather too.

This meal is a great way to get in complex carbohydrates, protein, natural sugars and some healthy fats into your system first thing in the morning.

As a passionate foodie, this place is my new-found love. Why? The food is downright delicious, and it’s designed to be shared – so you can try a number of amazing dishes in one sitting. The prices are incredibly reasonable, the staff are exceptional; and the atmosphere is pleasant and relaxed – what more could you ask for?

I recently visited Brooklyn with my sister, tasked with the oh-so difficult job of reviewing their menu. I can tell you this – the biggest challenge of the night was deciding what to try – it all sounded so good.

Deciding to share everything, we went for a couple of dishes to start – namely the smoked mussel and prawn ravioli, with chilli butter sauce, and seared prawns with cucumber and chili lime dressing.

Both came out looking amazing. A lover of clean and simple food, I fell for the prawns, so fresh and crisp, while my sister has not stopped raving about the ravioli – with its spicy buttery sauce and amazing smoky flavour. We tried a main dish, and then couldn’t look past one of their pizzas. The pork cutlet main came with

an apple and cress salad, and delectably creamy kumara mash. This dish is gluten free, as are many of the options, and was so tasty. The portion was perfect too.

My favourite of the night came in the pumpkin pizza – a thin base covered in pumpkin, pine nuts, thyme and caramelised onion. I’m in love – with a pizza. It’s sad but true, this dish is divine.

There were a number of gourmet options that also looked awesome, but I don’t think I could not choose this again.

Dessert was squeezed in with pleasure – we shared a tiramisu and a chocolate brownie. The tiramisu are made on-site and come in a gorgeous jar. The brownie is rich and served with salted caramel sauce. Following this we were both incredibly full – and incredibly happy. I would recommend this place to anyone in an instant – and all the comments from my friends and colleagues who have tried Brooklyn say the same. Okay – I know I’ve gone overboard – but this place deserves it. If you haven’t tried Brooklyn for yourself, get over there – you won’t regret it.

A hectic life demands a simple solution There is always a lot that seems to be taking up my time – and even I am beginning to feel the preChristmas pressure.

With the hectic life we face leading up to Christmas – a lot of people begin to run around in everdiminishing circles.

So, when you get home and you don't really want to cook why not keep things easy – turn on the barbecue, get a few ingredients together

and grill and eat.

The weather has now warmed up enough to fire up the barbecue and throw on the odd steak, or whatever takes your fancy.

I love barbecues and the simple flavoursome charred and smokegrilled taste it gives different foods.

Years ago, I can remember canned asparagus being served as part of a salad selection with

barbecue food. But these days, it’s more likely to be fresh asparagus, brushed with olive oil then seasoned and seared for a few minutes on the barbecue – now it’s one of my favourite barbecued vegetables. This week, I’m showing you how to make of my favourites for the barbecue – the salmon fillet together with the asparagus is a simple, easy way to unwind as you dine alfresco in the evening sunset.

Party Favour

Barbecued salmon fillet and asparagus with bittersweet citrus sauce Serves two 2 salmon fillets 1 asparagus bunch olive oil for cooking sea salt freshly-cracked pepper 1 lemon 1 orange 1 lime 2 Tbsp of Kikkoman soy sauce 2 Tbsp brown sugar 1 cup orange juice 2 Tbsp cider vinegar 1 Tbsp cornflour ¼ cup water Method

Zest all of the citrus fruit. Add the zest to a stainless pot with the orange juice, vinegar, brown sugar and soy sauce; and put on the corner of the barbecue to simmer.

With the remaining fruit, cut some slices and sear off on the grill until they are charred (a chef ’s word for burned). This adds to the bitterness of the sauce – and the longer you grill and caramelise the slices, the better. Next, brush or dip asparagus in olive oil and season well before throwing on a hot part of the barbecue. The last job is to sear off the salmon, starting on the skin-side, which only takes a few minutes to cook each side.

Thicken the citrus sauce with cornflour and water after adding some selected well-grilled and charred slices of lime, orange and lemon – just a few is enough.

Assemble the dish after resting the salmon briefly, laying it on top of the charred asparagus. Finish by drizzling the bittersweet citrus sauce over everything and thanking yourself with a glass of pinot gris.

Fluffy friends: Will the Greens now change tack?

Stop fireworks Dear sir, My name is Sam the Scruff. I’m a dog and I live in Otumoetai. I’m writing this to let you know how scary the fireworks are.

Every night this week, there’s been banging and flashes and loud whistling and more banging going on, long into the night.

I shake and pant and dribble; and my whole body is wracked with uncontrollable fear as I hear the loud noises all around me.

My owners try to comfort me, but it’s really scary.

It’s also very tiring and exhausting, especially when it’s night after night. If I was a human I would sign the petition to ban fireworks sales to individuals and just put up with the controlled displays two or three times a year.

My owners have signed it, but I’d like your readers to know how traumatised we dogs get when the fireworks go off each year.

It’s not a pretty sight when I’m afraid. Does anyone know if anything can be done to help us with this?

Mail service already cut A few weeks ago I sent a card to a friend in Auckland, posted in Tauranga on a Friday, hoping it would get ttor her the following Tuesday. It arrived Wednesday.

I also posted a letter on a Tuesday to a P. O Box in Hamilton. It had not arrived on Friday.

We have a notice in our local store with postal services that local mail can now take up to three days.

Why does NZ Post not deliver to houses on a Saturday, as do many other countries in order to save costs?

We’re being told that due to volume declining mail services will be cut back.

Where I work the majority of invoices, statements and letters are sent via email. No wonder with the amount of time it takes to receive mail. I thought NZ Post was cutting back next year - not this year.

Recently, I challenged Dr Ian McLean, one of two Green candidates in October’s local body elections, to examine reasons for their electoral failure. I proposed the Greens have cried wolf too often.

In attempting to portray worsening, on-going environmental disasters, they’ve destroyed their credibility.

They appear committed to a scenario of environmental doom that the rest of us see as unrealistic and wrong.

Dr McLean’s response (The Sun, November 8), is I have “...raised several points worth debating...”. Then he avoids the debate all together.

The Greens continue following a recipe typified by Stanford University’s Dr Steven Schneider in 1989. “We need to get some broad-based support, to capture the public

imagination... we have to offer up some scary scenarios, make simplified dramatic statements and little mention of any doubts one might have...

Each of us has to decide the right balance between being effective, and being honest,” he said of scientists trying to communicate complex issues.

Fear tactics, misinformation and overstatement have led the Greens to a political dead end. Some recognise this.

The UK Guardian’s George Monbiot confessed the Greens anti-nuclear position is wrong and misleading. Monbiot states: “We [Greens] have done other people and ourselves a terrible disservice”.

With review of Green propaganda underway, it’s worth considering their whole ethos - the environmental state of the planet is bad and getting worse.

Readers should read Bjorn Lomborg’s game-changing book ‘The Skeptical Envoronmentalist’ I’ve great respect for Dr McLean’s qualifications, but I’d value an acknowledgement that Green environmental concern is a masquerade and their underlying political purpose is wealth redistribution.

Ex-Australian Prime Minister John Howard recently said: “climate change has become a substitute religion for people with a nakedly political agenda, which has less to do with saving the planet than it does with reining in economic growth and wealth redistribution” (UK Telegraph November 8, 2013).

Or, as HL Mencken said: “The urge to save humanity is always a false front for the urge to rule it”.

Greens haven’t got broad-based support or captured public imagination. I wonder if Dr McLean and his Green colleagues will change tactic accordingly?

Enjoy view while you can The Tauranga City Council and Element IMF are proposing major changes to the Tauriko Business Estate, as part of TCC’s city plan review.

Few people appear to know about these changes, in part because some of it affects residents of the Western Bay of Plenty.

These changes are contrary to the original intent of the business estate, which was to create a pleasant green outlook where

people could ‘live, work, and play’.

Now, changes are being proposed to reduce the greenery and increase the industry.

For example, Boffa Miskell and TCC arborists debated at length suitable tree species, their size and spacing.

Now, Boffa Miskell says these same trees are inappropriate and need to be removed.

It is also proposed to reduce the grass verges to match city industrial sites.

For example, to create more industrial land and more impervious ground cover, which equals increased flooding potential.

Down the Belk Rd-end, TCC and Element IMF propose a reduction in greenbelt and an increase in industry with infill of four-five metres; and a maximum building height of 16 metres.

This is all within close proximity to the Wairoa River, which will no doubt enjoy the extra silt when it floods, as it tends to do regularly. So if you drive along Belk Rd or State Highway 29 to get to work, enjoy the view while you can. TCC proposes to destroy it.

TCC responds:

Proposed Plan Change 3 would reduce this 13 hectare zone by 4.3 ha. It will allow industrial development 100 metres closer to Belk Rd area.

However, landscaping is still required to buffer future development. Proposed tree changes only

affect the internal road corridor trees, where some standards have proven unsuitable.

The plan change was publicly notified and affected parties from both the Western Bay of Plenty and Tauranga City were given opportunity to make submissions.

The Tauriko Business Estate is an industrial zone.

An existing greenbelt zone is set aside for a stormwater pond, but the pond is no longer needed in the size originally intended.

Politics: Understanding left and right Recently, after admitting to a good friend of ours that we really did not understand the term, left and right political parties, he told us this.

Right-leaning political parties look after the rich; and the leftleaning parties are the ones who look after the ordinary people.

No doubt this will be challenged by some, so the debate should be interesting.

Reborn Cargo Shed: Fight well worth it Being lost for words isn’t a term normally applied to me.

Fortunately, it was a very temporary condition because now I want to tell everyone about the re-vamped Cargo Shed.

I have spent many years working in different areas of craftwork and feel qualified to comment.

At the age of 70, I completed a three-year rangana, flax weaving, course at the Tauranga Wananga.

The revamped Cargo Shed has exceeded my expectations in appearance and the wonderful

variety and high quality of work being sold there.

To add further interest, visitors can watch the crafters at work.

Just remember these things are all made locally, so come on Tauranga - go and support the good people down there. Sit down and enjoy a coffee and take time to enjoy the magnificent views.

Congratulations to the tenants of the revamped Cargo Shed. The fight to keep the shed was well worth it.

Kiwifruit gripe: play on reality In regard to the November 10 article on Sunlive called ‘Growers can change industry’, my husband and I are kiwifruit growers of some 24 years so have experienced many ups and downs (one of those downs was during the multi-desk exporters days), in the kiwifruit industry and have chosen to be fully shared up growers.

The comments by Ted Mead and Ross Hart (of the Independent Kiwifruit Growers Association), about Zespri shareholders being exclusive beneficiaries of the brand name and new varieties are a play on reality. Only growers can be shareholders, no-one can force you to be either, but to moan you are not is no-one’s fault but your own, as there have been many, and still are, opportunities for growers to be shareholders.

Taxpayers funds are used by many private companies as start-up grants, government bail-outs etc, but they are still privatelyowned companies.

Grower funds were used as promissory notes in the initial stages to get working capital for Zespri and they were later translated into shares. So growers have absolutely funded, by far, the majority of research and development and set-up costs of today’s industry.

Even Psa-V Government-funded assistance was dollar for dollar. Our Industry returns to taxpayers many times over, by way of taxes and jobs etc.

If growers have chosen not to support a grower-owned system in the past, for whatever reason, that is purely their own choice.

The 25 per cent of growers owning 75 per cent of Zespri is also a play on figures and a twisting of the truth to suit a purpose. Those 25 per cent of growers produce 72 per cent of the crop, so are shared up according to their production.

They can only vote on their average threeyear volume of export trays. They do not

control or own the industry, but they have chosen to support the system by being a shareholder.

To suggest New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers Inc president Neil Trebilco has sole power to disregard submissions to the Kiwifruit Industry Strategy Project, he personally does not like, is ridiculous. All submissions will be put before a panel, who determine the merits of each and any outcome will be agreed by a democratic process.

The IKGA need to declare their level of actual grower support with a factual account of associated members, meetings with recorded minutes, AGMs etc. They also need to declare their intentions behind all of these attacks on an industry, that according to all factual able-to-be-presented records, has the vast majority of growers support. Otherwise, shut up and stop trying to destroy my income.

Police should bust roastbusters gang The police involved in the roastbusters scandal should do their job and arrest and charge the members of the sex ring on suspicion of stupification, sexual assault and rape of minors and young women.

They know they are breaking the law and should bring them to justice.

Arresting those perverts will encourage their victims to come forward and give police the evidence to lay charges and put them behind bars. No woman or girl asks to be

raped. It is always the fault of the rapist or sexual offender. Women are not objects to be used or conquered (roasted). Taking advantage of intoxicated women is definitely rape, as the woman is not in a position to say no.

Consent means she must agree to it and know what she is doing.

Also the woman’s innocence has been harmed, as some of them are still children themselves and below legal age of consent.

Sex, for it to be morally acceptible, must be

within marriage, between consenting adults and done in private.

It is not a form of recreation or a spectator sport and is not for everyone.

It is not purely a physical act, it is a spiritual act. It is the total gift of self between a man and a woman united in marriage.

It is for the procreation of children and for the affirmation of the marital bond.

Failing to protect us from crime We, the people of New Zealand, are totally sick of the amount of crime in our country.

I raise this because international information showing New Zealand is rated near the worst country in the world for reported crimes per head of population.

For instance, in 1960 there were 1003 assaults reported, but in 2013 that figure was 10 times that amount - at 10,220.

Daily, we hear of assaults on our elderly parents and grandparents, in their own homes.

John Key and the National Party,

you have the responsibility to keep us safe and you have failed to do this. Stop the liberal lunacy regarding being soft on criminals.

Get more Police and stronger sentencing in place. Scare the criminals and lock those away who assault, rape and kill. We are not going to vote for you unless you act forcefully to protect New Zealand.

Papamoa digs poses prickly dilemma We have recently moved to Papamoa to enjoy the beach lifestyle, but have been disappointed to find Onehunga Weed in absolute abundance. It’s along all of the grass edgings, including areas around the beach and as well as parks and reserves. It seems everyone is used to this horrible, prickly weed grow-

ing in their lawns.

Children and animals tentatively pick their way across these areas and we often see them picking out the prickles.

I’d like to see Tauranga City Council embark on a process of elimination in the whole area of Papamoa. If the whole area was

sprayed at the end of September each year and householders were also encouraged, Onehunga Weed and the awful prickles could be a thing of the past in just a few years - and our grassy areas would be children friendly again over the summer.

Foul-mouthed Chuck’s stunning return David Strassman and the dim-witted Ted E. Bare dropped into Sun Media on their nationwide tour this week.

Chuck Wood’s manners haven’t improved since his television days. The filthy little blighter managed to insult most of the crowd, his creator; and terrorise his hapless bear counterpart in pacey and hilarious shows.

The cheeky puppet and sidekick of veteran ventriloquist David Strassman kept audiences cackling for two shows at Tauranga’s Baycourt theatre this week.

The foul-mouthed Chuck, star of Strassman’s TV series here during the nineties, was aided and abetted by a whole team of Strassman creations, including the lovable but stupid Ted E. Bare – plus a few new faces such as the rude little alien sent to destroy our planet; and Angel, a concoction of robotic brilliance, flashing lights, perky attributes and yet another clever Strassmaninspired persona.

The ventriloquist and his team of misfits weaved a fast-paced story, with Strassman’s aim of a laugh every 10 seconds, through many scenes with the backing of three big screens. The story basically was an attempt by the rebelling puppets, led by Chuck, to take over the show and control Strassman’s mind. As the story unfolds, the complex script and building number of puppets

involved in the same conversation led the audience on a mind-blowing – and at times – frenetic dialogue that seemed incredible that one man could be in control of it all.

The addition of stunning robotic action meant that puppets were at times seemingly moving and talking independently, on opposite sides of the stage, to their creator.

The ‘Careful What You Wish For’ tour is off to a great start.

Strassman, in an exclusive interview with Sun Media this week, describes it as an incredible show.

Every day above ground is a good day to enjoy I once asked Tauranga artist Tony Warnes if he was having a good day.

“I’m an artist,” he replied, “Every day above ground is a good day”. And I tend to agree with him. Being someone unable to recognisably draw even the cats at the Watusi Country Club (“I'm not that fat” one of them told me, as she clawed at my head after the last attempt), I can hardly lay claim to the title of “artist”; but I’m with Tony: “Every day above ground...”

That happy thought had me planning another ‘Reasons to be Cheerful’ column, but I struggled to fill it. And one of the things currently making every day a good day is the re-emergence, after a long winter, of asparagus.

But I wrote about that exactly one year ago and have learned absolutely nothing extra in the meantime about those delicious little spears. (Note to self: must find something new and interesting about asparagus.)

So...one gig. That’s all I’ve got.

But it’s not just any old gig – this is something rare and special.

It’s happening next Wednesday (November 21), at the Tauranga Art Gallery. I’ve heard a few bands in the gallery now and it’s a great spot for a gig; even if the pristine surroundings seem a little at odds with ‘A night of Americana’. But worry not about aesthetic clashes, because next Thursday Kelly Joe Phelps is coming to Tauranga to play the blues.

I’m gobsmacked

Now, for anyone who’s ever heard of the man, or his music, that statement would be enough to have you jumping for joy. I know I was a bit gobsmacked when I heard. “The Kelly Joe Phelps?” I asked, which is a bit dumb, for several obvious reasons. What I really meant was “In Tauranga?”

And yes, it is The Kelly Joe Phelps (not all those other Kelly Joe Phelps' who live out Maketu way), the one who plays stunning acoustic blues and has been slowly broadening the boundaries of Americana for nearly 20 years. If you know who he is then you'll have stopped reading by now and gone to buy tickets.

Student and hospice’s musical connection A Tauranga Girls’ College student’s revolutionary idea of a concert to bring the young and old together could become an annual event at Waipuna Hospice.

Year 12 student Emily McCarthy is travelling to Wellington this month to receive a $2000 prize – presented by Speaker of the House Rt. Hon. David Carter – after winning Youth Parliament’s NZ Business and Parliament Competition.

The gig received high appraisal from programme coordinator Fran Leisegang, who feels it was a highlight of the programme’s year.

Promising future

In a thank you letter to Emily, Fran says the girls helped to “lift the patients’ spirits” – and signalled she hopes to make the concert an annual Day Programme event.

“Emily and I talked about the possibility of this visit by the Tauranga Girls’ College students becoming an annual event. I do hope so – we’d love to have them back.”

This accolade is to recognise Emily’s work in creating a partnership between her school and the hospice – following a chance encounter with the organisation’s chief executive officer Richard Thurlow.

Emily, who was representing Bay of Plenty MP Tony Ryall in 2013’s Youth Parliament, was attending a lunch with Prime Minister John Key when she was seated next to Richard.

The purpose of the open day, on Sunday, is

to give people a taster of one of those trips, says Estelle.

Participants will be taken on a short journey through Tauranga’s “beautiful” waterways and stop for lunch at one of the best picnic spots.

“It’s really just a way to experience something locally they perhaps didn’t know existed in their own backyard,” says Estelle.

New-look Kora all set for summer Kora’s new video for their single ‘Hit the Wall’ aims to leave behind all earthbound notions people have about the band when it’s released on November 22.

After taking the winter off to sort out band and management changes, Kora is ready to hit the stage for summer.

Originally made up of four brothers Laughton, Francis, Stuart and Brad Kora with Dan McGruer, Stuart says his brothers Brad and Laughton have left the band to pursue other endeavours – but he’s found two worthy artists to replace them.

“We have always been an eclectic sought of band. We are known as a reggae band; and we just tried to break away from that, because there are a lot of reggae bands around. We have tried to keep the essence of what we are.”

Summer airshow gaining international interest The prospect of showcasing their wares to tens of thousands of people on a summer holiday long weekend has seen enquiries for trade sites at the Classics of the Sky – Tauranga City Airshow increase as the January event draws closer.

The opportunity to view WW1 aircraft never before seen this far north in New Zealand has already drawn enquires for information and tickets from around the world. Prospective trade site holders realise the WW1 commemoration theme is attracting public attention – and more than half of the trade site spaces have already sold out, with food and beverage sites being most popular.

The trade fair and family entertainment component of the airshow is organised by members of the Rotary Club of Tauranga – Te Papa. A Rotary liaison

member of the Airshow Management Committee, Andrew von Dadelszen, was reporting a recent meeting that aviation and motor vehicle sites are also selling well “and there has been good demand for general trade sites”.

The Rotary Club is also organising the motor home camping component of the weekend. People with self-contained motor homes and camper vans can camp in a designated site from Friday night to Monday morning.

Running the trade fair and family entertainment component of the airshow is a fundraising project for the club. All net proceeds from the project are distributed to local community organisations.

Variety concert for village radio station Orchestra’s final A variety concert featuring some of Tauranga’s leading entertainers is being held at the Redwood Room at Bureta Park Motor Inn on Sunday, November 17, from 1.30pm to raise funds for Village Radio.

Brilliant Israeli cellist Inbal Megiddo is Bay of Plenty Symphonia’s guest soloist in Edward Elgar’s famous ‘Cello Concerto’ performance in E Minor.

It is one of the two major works in the orchestra’s final concert for 2013.

Inbal, presently in charge of cello studies at the New Zealand School of Music, has years of experience in performing around the world.

At her New York debut at the Lincoln Centre, Inbal’s playing was hailed by the press as having “magical expression and technical expertise”; and she also was said to have a “warm, lustrous communicative way… the performance was sincerity personified”.

Inbal has played in Europe, Asia and America, Germany, Spain, Ireland, New Zealand and Israel – and always her playing has been acknowledged in glowing terms.

Receiving many awards and prizes in her career, Inbal was selected by the Stradivari Society as a rising star as a musician “with the rare combination of extraordinary interpretive depth, virtuosity and charisma to reach international stardom” – and received the use of a Stradivari cello.

The ‘Cello Concerto’, composed in 1919, is Edward Elgar’s last work, of which he reportedly scribbled down the first theme immediately upon awakening from surgery.

It was the young, enigmatic Jacqueline du Pre though, who, through her performances, saved this concerto from oblivion and turned it into one of the most popular works in the repertoire.

the inspector usually writes something like “It may be necessary to carry out invasive testing”. This really excited the prospective buyers, and their banks.

The way the buyer’s report was written, you would have thought the whole house was affected. However, thanks to our very astute agent, it was agreed the issue was only in a small area and on re-inspection, it was found the repair was somewhere under $3000.

Words like ‘invasive testing’ conjure up massive problems in the minds of nervous buyers and often result in contracts being cancelled. Not something you want, ever.

In my case the fat lady is on the stage, holding the microphone, I’m just waiting for her to sing the words: “This contract in unconditional”.

Flo and I were overjoyed to see Jorg the Mount Mobile Vet van pull up outside No.1 The Strand this week.

Not because we particularly enjoy vet check-ups, but Jorg and his team had some yummy dog treats.

We had the once-over and our annual shots, then some flea treatment. Flo, who spends a bit of time in the bush chasing varmints, needed some special tick treatment too, since she’s at risk of picking up hitchhikers!

Fire of love confronts evil Have you ever seen a mother bear robbed of her cubs?

I have not...but I’ve seen a mother going into bat for her child at school, and woe to you if you stand in her way.

She is committed to her child with a fiery zeal.

This reminds me of the fiery zeal of the Lord, as He confronts evil in the world. God feels passionately about the world He created, and about the people He formed in love. So when He sees the wilful destroying of their lives and relationships, He rages against it.

But unlike the biased mother whose child can do no wrong, God’s anger

doesn’t completely pass us by. Because we’re not just on the receiving end of evil – we also create it. God sees this evil within us, and He goes after it like a surgeon battling against life-threatening cancer cells.

Being confronted by God like this is terrifying and yet there is still hope.

When we respond in humility, the ‘Surgeon’ can do His work.

The Almighty has overcome Death, and so He can overcome the death within us. I’m convinced there is nobody too far gone that they cannot be redeemed by this work of God. So let us not fear.

Although the anger of God is a consuming fire, it is also the fire of love.

Recently, we had the privilege of visiting New York City, with its many of the sights 911 Ground Zero. Of course, like every public place in America, you have to go through tight security – which is a testimony to a changing mad world.

The memorials consist of two square in-ground waterfalls, surrounded by a continuous plaque with all the names of the brave and innocent people killed by the collapsing of the twin and single towers.

The people, who went about their lives that fateful day, had no idea the decisions made by politicians and

leaders would create such an evil happening.

As we toured the city many references where made about 911 being a day in history that will never be forgotten and that the world changed for the worst that day, as anyone travelling today will give assent to.

It made me realise today’s date represents a far greater occurrence the whole world has no choice than to acknowledge. This date has not, and will not, ever be forgotten – because it is the foundation of time around the birth of Jesus Christ; the only God the universe is numbered after.

What more undisputed proof do you need, apart from what you see around you, of the marvel and intricacy of life that no person can fully explain?

We look at how it works and what we have to do to receive it. We discuss whether we can just do whatever we want and still enjoy me mercy, and investigate unforgivable sin. We also ask why we still feel guilt, and suffer the consequences of sin after we have been forgiven.
