The mystery of the missing bus stop Mother-in-Law goes militant over misguided hopper stopper There must be some very brave, or extremely foolhardy folk working at the city council.

Because someone in city hall has decided to mess with my Mother-in-Law’s bus stop. Without asking!

To be fair, the good folk at the city council didn’t know this bus stop was the personal possession of the MIL. In fact, they were quite surprised to learn that bus stops could in fact be hornswaggled into the specific ownership of individuals.

But you try arguing otherwise with Constance.

She’s been happily alighting and, I guess, de-lighting, at the Fraser Street bus stop near the corner with Chadwick, for many years.

Now someone has unwisely told her she can’t.

It’s a brave person who decides to tell my Mother-in-Law where to get off.

The MIL’s favourite Hopper connection disappeared up the road, creating major unrest amongst the villagers in the normally quiet and peace-loving suburbs of Greerton.

Mother-in-Law has launched a full-on bus stop reclamation offensive.

Mum’s Army has mobilised; a Greerton branch of the Bus Stop Liberation Front is strategising over tea and cakes and, wheels are in motion. They’re not standing for this. Nor will they take it sitting down.

They’re seething.

You should be warned: LETTERS HAVE BEEN WRITTEN. Included in the ranks of the Bus Stop Liberation Front is Flip, a feisty young thing of 91, who was among the first to discover that the bus stop had been relocated so far down the road. By the time Flip got there, she was 92.

Flip has a dog with three legs. We’re not sure why that fact is important to the mysterious disappearing bus stop story, but I just thought you should know.

It limps around pretty much as the staff at the council will, if the renegades from the Bus Stop Liberation Front get within handbag-swinging range.

Such is the rage amongst the bus travellers in this part of the town, the city council won’t have any legs to stand on, if they get hold of them.

Worst of all, it seems no-one consulted or even notified the loyal Hopper patrons of the pending change of bus stop location. It wouldn’t have happened in the old Hopper days, they say.

Apparently the director of Bus Stop Relocations, who is probably on $120,000 a year with a council car, decided that the position of the Fraser Street stop was too close to the corner, and therefore a danger. Even though no-one knows of any incidents which back up this notion.

What, they ask at the BSLF tactical rallies, tapping their teaspoons accusingly on the doilies, would it have taken for a notice to be put up? Why, they ask, dunking gingernuts relentlessly into suffocated submission, was a flyer not popped in the local mailboxes?

What would it have cost, they anguish while wringing the digits off their Gold Cards, for the bus driver to mention it to the passengers?

Not a lot, according to the Bus Stop Liberation Front.

The stop was earlier this week, located adjacent to Pemberton Park, which the BSLF says is ridiculous because it has been taken away from the concentration of residential housing and put in virtual exile. Which is where the director of Bus Stop Relocations would be now, if he

knew what was good for him.

A smart move would be to apply for diplomatic immunity or join the witness relocation programme – anything to get out of range of the far-reaching tentacles of the BSLF; lest he be found bound to a zimmer frame, gagged with a ball of four ply double knit; bodily perforations from a number six knitting needle and his intestines hanging from a crotchet hook.

We hate to guess the fate of his gingernuts.

So now Constance and Clifford and Flip and maybe the three-legged dog have to take a cut lunch and set out on their trek to the far flung outskirts of Greerton, just to catch a bus back up town to the library or the supermarket.

Good news is on the horizon, however, as we prepare this piece.

While photographing the militant villagers, the council was running around painting out lines and painting in new ones, we suspect a sign that the mysterious mobile bus stop may be on the move again. Watch this space.

Meth no longer the drug of choice The use of methamphetamine is decreasing according to data gathered as part of a Ministry of Health survey.

The survey, which is not yet available to the public, shows one per cent of New Zealanders used the drug in 2011, less than half of the 2.1 per cent who said they used P in a 2007-2008 survey.

However in the Bay of Plenty, the statistics are varied.

In 2011, nine people were caught using methamphetamine compared to the five recorded in 2010.

Despite the increase in people caught using the drug, the number of people caught possessing P decreased. Police recorded 82 people were arrested for possession of methamphetamine in 2011, down from the 98 recorded in 2010.

The results suggest the country’s epidemic of P use peaked early in the 2000s, says detective senior sergeant Chris Cahill.

“We detect there has been a decline of methamphetamine users - certainly in new users, in mainly younger people taking up the drug.

“I don’t think methamphetamine is seen very much as a social drug any more, pretty much the opposite – it’s an antisocial drug.

I think society has done a pretty good job of demonstrating how harmful methamphetamine is.”

One of the biggest methamphetamine busts in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty region saw the seizure of firearms, cash, chemical and significant amounts of methamphetamine.

Methamphetamine is also known as ice, crystal meth and P. Detective senior sergeant Nigel Keall says the operation involved three properties being searched by police earlier in the year; one in Oruanui north of Taupo, one in Cambridge and one in Waitomo.

“Operation Sonny was a police investigation set up to locate and apprehend David John Harries, who had been on the run since December 2010 after breaching his parole release conditions.

“The enquiries into his whereabouts revealed significant methamphetamine related offending by a core group of people.

“Two men and a woman were located at the Oruanui property where a number of firearms, a methamphetamine laboratory, large quantities of chemicals,

methamphetamine and cash were recovered.”

Police found about 952g of methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of over $800,000, and just over $157,000 in cash.

Nigel says an Auckland-based police clandestine laboratory team worked with Bay of Plenty officers to carry out a scene examination.

“Amongst items identified was 21 kilograms of Contac NT, a pseudoephedrine based precursor product used in the manufacture of methamphetamine, which has an estimated value of over $900,000.

“Consulting with colleagues nationally it appears the discovery rates with one other in terms of the largest operations discovered in this country and considering the proven output of this lab, it appears the find is the bigger of the two.”

Police continue to ask people to report any suspicious activity, whether they believe it’s criminal or not.

“Some of the signs of an illicit drug operation include a pungent or chemical odour, curtains closed during the day and night, lights on all night, or large numbers of cars moving in and out of a property at odd times.

Guitar, bass, drums and vocals – it sounds like your standard rock, but four-piece Tauranga Boys’ College ‘Scunge’ band Kuriosity is focused on bringing a fresh voice.

Lead singer Finlay Martin describes the group’s style as a blend of grunge and rock and says their songs are about being authentic.

“Our message to others is to be true to yourself, not to listen to what people want you to be. Just be who you are.”

Finlay says the group, which only formed in February, is excited about competing at the regionals and are rehearsing hard to polish its performance.

“It’s a great way to get our band out there and for people to see us for what we are.”

Boys’ College Year 13 student Isaac Andrews has also been practising hard for the regionals where he is doing a solo performance – a change from the last year when his band Eyes of May took second place.

Isaac, who sings and plays guitar and harmonica, says Rockquest has been a good launching pad for the band and has helped Eyes of May take the lead in a current online competition on www.theaudience.co.nz

Stage set for smoking hot contest Teen musicians across the Western Bay are playing out their dreams of rock stardom at Baycourt on Saturday.

The 12 acts taking centre stage in the SmokefreeRockquest regional finals cover the musical genres, with bands competing from most secondary schools in the area.

Tauranga Boys’ College has students performing in four acts, a feat which music teacher Brenda Oakley describes as ‘fantastic’.

“I think it’s one of our bigger years. It’s really encouraging for all music students to see this level of success.”

Brenda says the students have been practising hard to tighten up their performances, and all were feeling comfortable performing on stage.

The SmokefreeRockquest has been a launching pad for many successful musicians since it was launched 24 years ago, with recent success stories including Kimbra, Midnight Youth, Opshop and Ladyhawke.

The two top bands at the regional finals will have a chance to compete at the national finals in Hamilton if a video of their performance impresses the national judges. Only eight bands will play at the national finals from a pool of more than 50 from the regionals.

Life Education Trust is moving on after fire destroyed their trailer at Brookfield Primary School on Tuesday evening.

The Western Bay of Plenty branch has borrowed another trailer from Auckland and Harold the giraffe will be appearing this week at Omokoroa No. 1 School.

The much-loved Life Education Trust mascot escaped the fire that destroyed the trailer.

What didn’t escape was nine years of accumulated teaching resources, including a large collection of books, says educator for the trust Michael Chemis.

“Normally we put them in the

staff room but at this school we kept them in the back of the classroom,” says Michael.

The plastic crates of books that teachers can take back to the classroom and use were all lost in the fire.

“We had books on the body, stories about self-esteem that the smaller kids can use,” says Michael.

There was also a large non-fiction collection related to the body, health, and nutrition, how the heart and various organs work.

“There were also books on helping kids deal with all sorts of things, like grief,” says Michael.

Anyone who wants to help restore the library can leave book vouchers at their local school, and

the donors’ names will be placed in the books that are purchased.

Or they could help by bringing in food labels for laminating.

The multimedia experience provided by the Life Education Trust teaches children they are unique, with the aim of making them comfortable with their identity, enabling children to make decisions about negative influences.

The trailers cost about $250,000 and take five to six months to build. In 2011, the local trust reached nearly 13,000 students and visited 49 schools. It now operates two trailers.

A 17-year-old from Aongatete was arrested and charged with the burglary and arson of the trailer.

Guide dogs are allowed to go anywhere a member of the public goes and so the socialisation part of the training exposes the puppy to every possible scenario. Obedience training teaches them to listen, walk closely with the owner and overall how to behave in public.

Ted says the puppies are taught certain behaviours such as going under a table at a restaurant and generally staying out of the way when other people are around.

They are also taught not to run off and chase ducks, sheep or any other kind of animal while walking.

“They come everywhere with you, they do everything with you, as they will do with a blind person,” says Ted. The puppies wear a red coat when being trained as a guide dog in order to learn how to behave while wearing the coat as opposed to how they can behave without the coat. They are given time each day without the coat when they are allowed to run around and simply be a dog.

Ted and Barbara had a few motives for becoming puppy walkers. They enjoy having dogs but are unable to make the commit-

When they want to take a year and travel they can. Also they will not have to find a place for the dog when they have to move to a retirement village.

However the main motivation for becoming a puppy walker was Ted’s father, who went blind but never owned a guide dog.

“Us doing a little puppy walking for guide dog services is a bit of pay back for what they (Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind) did for my father.”

Ted says they have gotten a lot of enjoyment from being puppy walkers and getting to watch the puppies grow into effective guide dogs. He says the hardest part is giving the dogs back to trainers after the year is up.

Korea comes to town A group presenting the culture, traditions and food of Korea will take centre stage at the Village Hall in the Historic Village on June 20.

The group is comprised of both permanent residents and Koreans living here on guardian’s visas while their children attend carious Tauranga schools.

Ewa Fenn, president of the Tauranga Regional Multicultural Council, can’t wait for the night and says it will be run as usual with presentations, a cultural programme and a pot-luck dinner.

“We are looking forward to a great evening, as the Korean community always takes part in our events with great traditional costumes, dances, music and food.”

Entry, at 7pm, is free but guests are asked to bring a plate of food to share.

A dollar each way on gambling Tauranga City Council will be telling the government it doesn’t want to get as involved in owning pokie machines and administering gambling as it could do under the proposed gambling reform bill.

Officially known as the Gambling (Harm Reduction) Amendment Bill, Waiariki MP Te Ururoa Flavell’s private members bill is currently before the select committee.The bill proposes handing administering gambling, and 80 per cent of gambling profits, to councils.

Mayor Stuart Crosby says gambling is not the council’s core business and doesn’t think it should be involved.

At a workshop on the bill on Tuesday, city councillors heard from both sides of New Zealand’s gambling industry before deciding on the approach it will call for submissions.

Pub Charity chief executive Martin Cheer says returning 80 per cent of profits to the community is not presently workable because the government takes at least a third of the income in taxes.

While the council doesn’t want to be involved in administering gambling, it does see a possible role in distributing the funds, but only as long as gambling money paid for council involvement.

shop. He says pokie machines take about $1 million out of the Te Puna community every year. About 100 families are affected and have to find the money spent on pokies from somewhere else.

Gambling funds are distributed to clubs and schools in the Bay of Plenty - none of which have any association with Te Puna. The decisions about redistributing gambling monies are made in the Waikato. There is no Tauranga or Te Puna representative involved in those decisions.

Problem Gambling NZ chief executive Graeme Ramsey says South Auckland has a pokie machine for every 75 people, while in Remuera there’s one for every 465 people.

The issue is gambling harm, which he says relates more directly to Maori, Pacific Island and Asian gamblers – and pokie machines. Most problem gamblers have a problem with pokie machines, he says.

“If it wasn’t for pokie machines we wouldn’t exist.”

Gambling took $28.1 million out of Tauranga in the financial year ended March 31. Of that, $8.7 million was returned in the form of grants.

Tauranga’s submission has to be written up and presented to the select committee before June 21.

Chilly winds of change blow

The opening round of restructuring at the Tauranga City Council to match the current economic reality began with a confidential briefing on Tuesday

“Essentially, what we have asked the chief executive to do is reset this organisation in view of the new operating environment we find ourselves in with the change in the economy - and it’s as simple as that,” says mayor Stuart Crosby.

Buffer zone opposed

Federated Farmers is opposing a proposal for transmission buffer zones in the Western Bay of Plenty.

The organisation made submissions on the district plan last week, saying the plan will allow Transpower to take over the property rights on vast swathes of land, adversely affecting many farm businesses throughout the district.

Anti-boob rule passed

Tauranga city councillors’ determination to prevent another Boobs on Bikes parade through the city is enshrined in clauses in the new draft Street Uses and Public Places Bylaw 2012 approved on Monday.

The proposed clauses 19.1 – 19.5 of the draft bylaw now requires paraders to obtain written permission from the council if the parade or assembly is going to impede traffic, cause a public nuisance, endanger public health or safety, or be offensive.

I doubt if many are aware of UNISA, which is an alliance working together for strategic economic development.

It involves the mayors and chief executives of Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga, the chairman and chief executives of the regional councils of Northland, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty.

In economic terms, this area of New Zealand has often been referred to as ‘the golden triangle’, as possibly about 53 per cent of the GDP comes from within this area.

Crunch time for council The Thames Coromandel District Council has just announced that it has reduced debt considerably and has been able to cut rates by 2.5 to 8 per cent.

It is maintaining full services, expanding the Whitianga town centre and continuing with services that other less proactive councils are cutting. The restructuring is described in the Organisation Review Decision of March 30 and is available on the TCDC website.

The positive approach was helped by the appointments of a new mayor and CEO. The WBOP District Council and many other councils have resisted restructuring.

Seeking a better way I have spent a lot of time over the past eight months reading and listening to submissions to various strategic documents and making decisions as a result of the submissions.

Specific documents being consulted have included the Regional Policy Statement, the Regional Land Transport Programme and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council 10 Year Plan.

Reflecting on these consultative processes, I firstly want to acknowledge and thank submitters for their thoughtful input and the time taken to input into these important democratic consultations. Secondly, I really appreciate the consistent input from many of the same people and community groups who obviously care deeply about our region and the way forward.

Challenging times The regional council has finished making decisions on submissions to its 10 year plan. Sincere respect and thanks goes to all those who made their views known. It can be a daunting process, but underpins the rights and the huge value of people and communities “having their say”.

Final rating decisions are yet to be signed off by council, but at this stage the increase in general rating requirements will be limited to the growth of the council rating base, the estimated rise in the local government inflation index and the impact of the council funding $4m of regional infrastructure each year (for 10 years). This infrastructure spend will be a contestable process, starting this year, and already there are a number of regional projects lining up - such as the Opotiki Harbour Development and the Tauranga University proposal.

The charitable organisation is calling for books to be donated ahead of its Kiwicoast Lions 2012 Book Fair, at the Te Puke Memorial Hall, June 21-23.

Organisers are urging people to go through their bookshelves, have a tidy out and drop any unwanted items into either Z Te Puke (formerly Shell), Bennett Gibson, House of Travel Papamoa, Te Puke Times, or Lennards Orchard on SH2.

Fewer crashes attributed to police A reduction in crashes on Western Bay of Plenty roads is being attributed to an increased police presence.

A 45 per cent improvement in the number of crashes has been recorded on highways in the first two months of the police winter campaign.

During April and May, 15 crashes were recorded across three highways compared to 27 in the same period last year.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager, senior sergeant Ian Campion says the winter plan targets drivers on SH29 over

the Kaimai Range, SH2 from Bethlehem to Katikati and SH2 south of Te Puke to the Western Bay boundary on SH33.

“Speeds are down, I’m pleased to say. We have a high level of visibility on those highways throughout the winter action plan as a deterrent,” says Ian. “On SH29, we’ve noticed speeds are down, which is a really good thing. The crash rates are also down on those highways too.”

The biggest reduction in crashes was noted on SH2 north of Bethlehem, where only three crashes occurred in the past two months, down from the nine

recorded in the same period last year.

SH29 also had only three crashes, two less than at this point last year.

So far, nine crashes have been recorded on SH2, south of Te Puke.

During April and May last year, 13 crashes were recorded on the same stretch of road.

Ian says the vast majority of drivers are taking care on the region’s roads.

“There’s just the odd driver out there who doesn’t realise the greater the speed, the bigger the mess.”

Dollar signs in their eyes It’s a conundrum all elected members face, these financial plans, that bring home the reality of responsibility to the community.

Vote for this and that service or project and there is the risk of increasing debt and rates.

Vote against and there is the potential to reduce the levels of service and standards of living the majority in the community expects.

Irresponsible slagging

Spend to save?

This year’s rating requirement of around 3.4 per cent is more than I wanted but is also less than expected. Some elected members still have dollar signs in their eyes and seem to think that council can help spend the city economy out of this financial downturn. Others, and I am one of them, don’t subscribe to this theory. To spend your way out of a downturn first you have to take the money from those you purportedly want to help – and that’s the bit these theorists miss.

But as explained in last week’s column, there is probably going to be general public acceptance of a lower than expected rates bill.

Council property sales are budgeted to reduce city debt by more than $20 million in the coming years. There will not be a fire sale. Aspen Reserve, the site of the old Aspen Tree will not be sold and nor will Soper Park on Newton Street but nearby Tatua Reserve will be.

Council will seek a private/public partnership to go into the Phoenix Carpark in downtown Mount Maunganui, along with the proposal for a new library private/public partnership at Greerton, which has been initiated by the CEO. Sales of land that may be required in the future have been put on hold pending outcomes of decisions by government agencies. For instance, the 15th Avenue/Mayfair Street properties council/ratepayers own may be required for realignment and expansion of the Turret Road to Fraser Street intersection. Until

It’s really quite irresponsible to write that sort of thing when they chose not to have a reporter present. Had they been present they would have heard that council/ratepayers already cough up $1.4 million over the 10 years for a professional lifeguard service.

Funding was created in 2008 to increase patrols to Tay Street and Papamoa. My informed information from the lifesaving

sector is that the present situation copes well with the demand over the holidays.

Route K is budgeted to collect $2,178,538 and is now expect to pay itself off by 2041.

This should make it more attractive for the Government to buy. Surprisingly we received no submissions on this subject.

Inflation effects

How to measure the effects of inflation drew a debate. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a well known national measure but it is gauged by the price of food, alcohol, tobacco, clothing, footwear, housing and household utilities – all of which don’t have a great deal of bearing on council costs.

Local government inflation, we are told, is better measured in a manner “that reflects the environment the council operates in.” The Local Government Cost Index (LGCI) measures nine categories – roading/ transport, property, reserves/parks, water, staff, energy, pipeline, earthmoving, private sector wages. It is more relevant and reflects the great effects of inflation, which in turn increases the rates burden we are told.

Significant difference

Unfortunately central government seems unaware of the significant difference between CPI and LGCI and made comparisons that whilst politically attractive are largely irrelevant and certainly inappropriate according to Local Government NZ. You have to wonder how much successive governments are aware of how local government operates. They continually load up council/ratepayers with ongoing extra responsibilities and services, send no money, then bitch and moan about increasing rates. How does that work?

More stormwater issues are raising their heads, this time at Sulphur Point. It’s a longstanding problem where council owns land leased to an investor who has a building on it. $250,000 is the estimate to fix it and council will wait to see what options evolve from the marine precinct across the road that is currently awaiting expressions of interest so that the work can be co-ordinated. Internal submissions from staff some of which are items that have cropped up since the original draft were approved. Lots of roading projects, stormwater, wastewater and water.

A reduction of $12,145 in the elected members remuneration vote. There is $460,000 to be funded by a user pays loan for a trailer boat park on Keith Allen Drive opposite the boat launching ramp. As the port has taken back its leased land on Cross Road, the private boat park has closed.

This will be the last opportunity for trailer boat owners to lease a permanent park near the ramp. Council does have some duty of care here. Allowing section sizes of 325sqm

that gets sorted, plus the dispersal of traffic from that intersection, there is no point in a tunnel into Welcome Bay or another bridge at Turret Road. Speeding up the traffic to get to the 15th Ave/Fraser Street traffic jam makes no sense.

Hard edge to contaminated foam saga Whispers that a Tauranga-based bed supplier has been selling beds containing contaminated foam from China have been confirmed.

Bed Rumours owner Philip Griffith admits as many as 200 beds including

foam containing a chemical which emits a smell similar to glue have been sent to stockists.

“We have had some of our Chinese beds have a bit of a smell. We had the Chinese suppliers out here a couple of weeks ago to check into it and they found it was the chemicals used in the foam. So they’ve stopped that. The smell

does go but it takes a little bit of airing out.

“There’s probably a container of beds out there; there could be a couple of hundred beds out there that would have smelled initially, but it does go.”

Phillip says the business, which supplies 50 stores nationwide, including all Target stores and all the Beta Electrical stores in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty, has received about a dozen complaints and replaced about the same number of beds.

“We do have a few residual ones out there and if it’s too much for people we simply replace the bed.”

Tauranga Target manager Mark Kirby says his staff have not received any complaints relating to the beds, and says Bed Rumours are generally very quick in responding when alerted to a problem.

Tauranga man Neil McKinnon bought one of the beds and wasn’t impressed with what he received.

His first bed, purchased from Beta Electrical last year, was replaced within the last two months due to faulty springs.

The replacement bed gave off a smell which permeated through the bedroom and made Neil, his partner and their dog sick. It was replaced – with another bed from the same container – which in turn was replaced.

A fourth bed, procured by Neil after a visit to the factory to inspect the individual components, then became the focus of a stand-off between the two parties.

Neil wanted the company to buy him a more expensive New Zealand-made bed as appeasement, while the company were only offering to refund the money.

Neil says the second and third beds smelled horrendous, that he had to wash his sheets multiple times and has received $160 from Phillip for the dry-cleaning of bedding.

“What a stink man, it would give you a headache. Oh man, was I so crook. It’s just putrid. It just takes your breath away.

“I took the (second) mattress out of the bedroom, I cleaned the carpets with the hot water cleaner and I left the carpet in the garage for about an hour.”

Phillip spoke of Neil in kind.

“We’ve given him four different beds and put up with all his abuse,” says Phillip.

In the last few days, the Beta Electrical store involved has offered to take away the fourth bed and replace it with a brand new one.

Fishing a ‘bit of a mixed bag’ Last week and weekend few were out fishing in the Western Bay of Plenty.

There were few paying passengers or companions available to go fishing. The reasons were many - cold temperatures early in the morning, bad weather/gales forecast, tight financial times, and perhaps all of these and more.

Russ Hawkins (Fat Boy) was out Saturday for a halfday’s fishing at the 10 Mile Reef. They landed some big red cod, some nice tarakihi, nine pan-sized snapper, and a few trevally. They were troubled by the odd baracoutta attack, but otherwise it was a good half day.

Sunday Russ, with 13 other members of the Mount Maunganui Underwater Club aboard the Mantra, went diving at three locations: the Okaparus Reef, Cave Rock and the Taioma wreck. Visibility was good. There were a few crayfish, some snapper, red cod, blue mao mao, and butterfish.

Our veteran regular kontiki fisher at Papamoa had a good fishing week getting his snapper limit twice and averaging three or four snapper per set over all four occasions.

The kontiki fishing was Kayak fishers two or three miles off Papamoa Beach last week and weekend had some good fishing catching mainly snapper, tarakihi and kahawai.

The Western Bay Surfcasting Club held its last ClubFish tournament for the 201112 season last weekend, fishing anywhere within the Western Bay of Plenty. Fourteen anglers competed. No fish were weighed in.

Warning to discard fire ash safely As the nights grow colder, Western Bay of Plenty fire brigades are hoping residents dispose of fire ashes properly to prevent unnecessary fires.

Tauranga fire fighters have attended two call-outs for fires caused by discarded ashes since the beginning of May. The first involved a woman sleeping while a fire ignited, while the other involved a fire breaking out four days after someone had discarded ashes.

Tauranga senior station officer Mark Keller says the woman woke to the sound of fire alarms and was “very lucky”. “The call was to a smoke-logged house. The occupant had taken ashes from the fire and put them in a cardboard box and left them sitting by the fire.

“It was a very poor choice.

“Lucky for the occupant she had put fire alarms in the house.”

Mark says the house was well ventilated and the woman outside by the time fire fighters arrived.

“She was able to put the fire out by dumping the contents of the box in a basin full of water.

“There was still a strong smell of smoke in the house she had all of the doors and windows open.

“We still had to deal with hot newspapers around the fire.

“Ashes remain hot and they remain hot for a couple of days.”

In the second incident, fire fighters responded to a vegetation fire which ignited four days after the ashes were thrown out.

Mark says the fire service receive many similar calls each winter and is advising people to be cautious when disposing of ashes from a fire.

“When emptying the ashes from a fireplace, put them in a metal bucket and put them out on the lawn, or empty them onto the garden.

“Don’t leave them on a wooden deck or lean them against a house.

“And don’t put them into a flammable container, like rubbish bags or cardboard boxes, and certainly do not leave them sitting inside the house next to the fireplace.”

Katikati farewell for Merrimans Katikati is putting on a special event to farewell Ken and Nancy Merriman, one of its most influential couples, on June 17 and the whole community is invited.

The Katikati Community Board is hosting the farewell at Katikati War Memorial Hall from 1pm Sunday and chairman Bruce Duske says the event, which includes afternoon tea and entertainment, will be a chance to thank the Merrimans for all they have done over many decades.

Nancy received a Queen’s Service Medal in the recent Queen’s Birthday honours in recognition of her services to Katikati and the wider Western Bay community, but now the couple have sold the Katikati HeritKen and Nancy Merriman proudly age Museum they founded to a read the letter informing Nancy of community trust her Queen’s Service Medal. and have left town to live at Bethlehem.

Nancy served nine years as deputy chair of the Tauranga Museum Board and is a foundation trustee of the Athenree Homestead Trust. In 1974 she became the first woman elected to the then Tauranga County Council. She was elected to BOP Regional Council in 1989.

Nancy helped establish the Katikati Business and Professional Women’s Club, the Katikati Toastmistress Club, Tauranga Women’s Refuge and the first Tauranga Family Planning Clinic. Since 2005, Nancy has chaired the Katikati Community Health Trust, which she helped establish in 1992. Nancy was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1997.

Club president Roger Hutson says this is the largest auction of its type in New Zealand and a great opportunity for enthusiasts and interested amateurs to get their hands on bits and bobs, planes, choppers, propellers, transmitters and more, plus find out about the club, meet some of the members and learn about the benefits of building and flying model aircraft.

Money raised this year will help fund the new landing strips being laid at TECT All Terrain Park. An east-west runway of 150m and a northsouth landing strip of 200m will enable flyers to land all size model aircraft, including gas turbine powered jet models as recently flown in the Tauranga Air Show.

So far the club has spent $60,000 on earthworks preparing the new site and purchasing equipment including a tractor and lawnmowers. Roger is particularly grateful to the Lion Foundation, which has given the club $18,000, and for additional funding from Model Flying New Zealand.

“The new field is hugely better. We have signed a 35-year lease with Western Bay of Plenty District Council with an option to renew at the time it expires.”

Number of procedures is increasing Cosmetic surgery is usually performed to correct a physical abnormality or to enhance an otherwise normal physical feature. In short, it is to improve one’s appearance.

It is a broad field that offers a range of surgeries from reconstruction, repairing damage from physical trauma, to vanity, smoothing wrinkles, enlarging breasts or reshaping a nose.

The surgeries range from breast augmentation to tummy tucks, face lifts and neck lifts.

This data shows

a 5.8% increase in the number of procedures performed from 2010 to 2011. Statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in the United States support the suspicion that more and more people are having these surgeries. Their data shows that 13.8 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2011, up five per cent from 2010.

Basketball and netball players at Greerton Village School have welcomed the new allweather playing courts which have just been installed, but hope sponsors will help pay for new goalposts.

Principal Anne Mackintosh says the old courts, which had broken up to the point they were developing potholes and becoming unsafe, had been replaced with the help of a Lion Foundation grant.

“The children are loving the new safe surface. We are just so grateful to the Lion Foundation – without their grant for half the cost ($12,600) we wouldn’t have been able to do it.”

But she says the school is now looking for any help to raise the $6000 needed for new vandal-proof goal

posts incorporating backboards that can be used for basketball and netball.

“We are still looking at what we are going to do to raise the money, but we would be grateful for any support we can get.”

The netball posts which had been on the old court have been shifted to a smaller secondary play area, while basketball hoops on a separate basketball area had lost the backboard in a vandal attack.

“Once we get these new goal posts it’s going to make a huge difference. We’ve got quite a few netball and basketball teams at the school, so it will be great for them.”

School Year 6 student and sports ambassador Devan Scherchan says the pupils are proud of the new court and are looking forward to hosting interschool sporting events.

Pamper party raises elder abuse awareness Age Concern Tauranga is throwing a Pamper Party for carers, support people and older people for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.

The event, running from 10-2pm at the Tauranga Senior Citizens Hall, will include hand, foot and body massages, manicures, laughter yoga, a body and soul demo and refreshments.

An open invitation has also been extended for a talk at the Te Puke Citizens Club from 10-2pm on June 14. Police, a lawyer, a banking specialist and BOPDHB staff will be among

the speakers discussing the various ways which the elderly are abused.

Age Concern, New Zealand’s leading organisation for older people, estimates elder abuse to be as big an issue as child abuse. Just like child abuse, it has to stop.

Each day, Age Concerns around New Zealand receive an average of four calls about abuse or neglect. Age Concern New Zealand’s chief executive Ann Martin says unfortunately this is just the tip of the iceberg.

“Elder abuse destroys lives.

We have seen it cost older people their life savings, health, home, dignity and security. It’s an issue that warrants serious

attention.

“Ultimately we all pay the price as abuse can affect a person’s ability to contribute to their community and impact on health-related costs.”

Martin says elder abuse takes many forms: financial, physical, emotional and sexual. Neglect is also a form of abuse.

Age Concern tackles elder abuse on a number of fronts and works with a number of agencies to support and empower older people by challenging ageist attitudes and representing older people in Government submissions.

The Hamilton Fire Bugs will bring Greerton Village Square to light next month with their fire performances.

Plans are being finalised for an evening of fire and light in Greerton next month, building on the success of Greerton Village Mainstreet’s inaugural ‘Lantern and Light Show’ held last year.

Mainstreet manager Victoria Thomas says the Illumin Art street show will be held in the village square on July 13, with an expanded format to build on the success of last year’s event.

“Last year was really great but the only problem was it rained late in the night, so this year we are encouraging everyone to bring their umbrellas and coats.”

Poetry winners Winners in the Katikati Haiku Contest will be announced at the Haiku Festival Aotearoa from 7pm on Saturday June 16.

All are welcome to attend the prizegiving at Greerton Motor Inn (Tauranga RSA). Some 300 entries were received in the senior section (down from 445 in 2010) and 388 in the junior section (up from 117 in 2010).

Judging the contest has been Athenree poet and teacher Owen Bullock (senior) and Haiku Pathway founder Catherine Mair (junior), while Kings Seeds has sponsored the $260 in prize money.

Volunteer Week 17 to 23 June

Helping those in difficulty comes naturally for some.

After 10 years in the volunteer fire brigade, and three years with St John’s, Papamoa samaritan Kevin is now making a difference as a victim support volunteer.

He is one of 20 volunteer victim support workers in Tauranga who support victims of crimes or trauma whenever required. Like all the trained support officers he is rostered on-call in a week-on, week-off rotation.

Making a difference

Kevin, who did not want his surname published, says balancing the on-call voluntary work with his job and family takes a certain commitment, but describes the fulfilment of helping make a difference more than worth it.

“I’ve always been very community-minded and was looking for a new challenge after

helping in the Tauranga Hospital emergency department when someone suggested victim support.”

Contrary to popular belief the volunteers do not provide counselling but are there to provide information, support and empathy for victims. They work in conjunction with the police, not for them.

Blinkers off

Kevin recommends the voluntary work as very fulfilling, but emphasises volunteers need to be prepared for some tough experiences and be able to cope with stress.

He has learnt to deal with the trauma by putting on his ‘support hat’ when he goes into a situation, and only putting his ‘personal hat’ back on when he gets home.

After less than two years in the role he says it has made him a better person by taking his blinkers off to problems many people choose not to see. It helps him appreci-

While this value can often be assessed in terms of dollars raised or people helped, it is difficult to quantify the contribution of volunteers in terms of bringing a community together.

Without their efforts the term community would be relatively devoid of meaning, for community is all about participation, empathy, friendship and pride.

Winter sustainer As the weather gets colder and we turn to soups and casseroles to warm us up, I thought it was time I shared another one pot wonder.

The family used to eat stews and casseroles made in the trusty old pressure cooker often during the cooler months, and one I do remember was a lamb casserole with lots of vegetables and pearl barley. The barley gave the casserole a unique taste and certainly bulked out the meal, making the dollar stretch further.

There wasn’t much preparation for these meals – basically just chop everything up and cook all together until tender. The filling aspect of the barley

meant that after dinner you basically sat around digesting the food and would be in no mood to do anything physical like wash the dishes, preferring instead to watch television or read a book. So these days after a hard day’s work on a cold day there is a way to warm you up and satisfy your hunger. Much like rolled oats do for you in the morning, pearl barley has the same effect in your evening meal. Get a few packets for the pantry. You can add to your soups as well as make a stuffing for the chicken.

Here is my lamb and pearl barley casserole recipe, which I have used many times as a sustaining comfort meal.

Lamb and pearl barley casserole 600g diced lamb leg 150g pearl barley 1 onion, diced 2 cloves of garlic, chopped 1 carrot, diced 1 leek, diced

1 celery stick, diced 1 tablespoon dried or fresh thyme Small sprig of rosemary Salt and pepper 1 tablespoon tomato paste Some diced kumara, potato, pumpkin optional

Method In a large heavy saucepan or crockpot add the diced meat and vegetables after sealing off in batches in a hot frying pan with a little oil. Add the tomato paste and cover with stock or water and bring up to a simmer.

After 20 minutes, add the pearl barley and the herbs. Add more liquid as the barley absorbs it.

Cook for another 40 minutes,

making certain you stir it enough to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pot.

Adjust the seasoning and the moisture level, as the mix can become very thick. You can add any vegetables that you have, like silverbeet or even frozen peas to make this a true one pot dish.

The lamb and barley flavours will dominate to make it a memorable and filling meal.

The Otumoetai College Year 10 student’s culinary talent has earned him high praise from celebrity chefs Allyson Gofton and Helen Jackson, who have just judged his Cauliflower and Roast Vegetable Salad as winner of the national Veg Up Your Meal Challenge.

The fruit for this wine was grown in rich fertile clay loam soils, the low cropping vines were pruned to two canes and used to produce a concentrated balanced fruit.

The 2011 vintage was a strong La Nina summer in Marlborough. This weather pattern brought warm temperatures with a bit more moisture than average. The spring was warm and sunny, which resulted in excellent flowering. Mid-summer had some scattered rain which produced vine health and healthy canopies.

“There’s a lot of match three, endless running. There’s angry bird type games out there, we weren’t interested in doing something that’s been done before; we tried to do something quite innovative,” says John.

The design company moved to Tauranga a year ago to focus on developing apps.

Bee Leader is their fourth attempt, following Top Dog, What Cocktail and AnimalBlocks.

John says while creating apps is a lot of fun, it is also “a hell of a lot of work”.

“It’s very hard to keep on top of the latest trends; it’s constantly moving.”

Bee Leader, which took 10 months to complete, is their first serious app, says John.

“The previous apps have been more about the transition from a design company to making our own products.

“This is our first whole-hearted approach.”

John says the gaming market has changed thoroughly during the years.

A couple of years ago a developer could launch a

game, not do much to it afterwards and still make a living from it, but these days it is more about marketing and updates, he says.

“It’s defiantly a marathon not a sprint.”

Federated Farmers Sharemilkers’ and Sharemilker Employers’ Sections, with the assistance of DairyNZ, have jointly released ‘Ensuring a viable progression path in the dairy industry’.

“Sharemilking represents a third of our industry and we want to ensure it has a rich future,” says Ciarán Tully, Federated Farmers Sharemilkers’ Section chairperson.

“A level of annual variability aside, sharemilkers generate something like a 16 per cent return on assets. This compares with a farm owner’s three to seven per cent return on assets, plus five to 10 per cent annual capital gain.

“If you compare a career as a waged farm manager versus sharemilking in today’s dollars, it reveals something like a million dollar difference over 15 years. That’s huge if people intend to move into farm ownership.”

Ciaran says while herds have become larger in size their overall number has fallen and with it, the number of sharemilking positions.

“With many commenting on the rise of contract milking and equity partnership arrangements, Federated Farmers, with funding from DairyNZ, com-

missioned AgFirst’s James Allen and Nicola Waugh to provide a snapshot of career pathways.

“First up, we found the legal environment we operate in is sound but there’s greater need for herd owning sharemilkers to become flexible in their approach to negotiating agreements.

“Newer structures, such as leasing farms or buying stock and leasing them back to the farm owner, could enable the next generation to stay in the job while building their equity.”

Sharemilkers need to be seen as an integral part of farm succession and for those planning retirement, sharemilking could be seen as part of a farmer’s ‘exit strategy’.

“It’s clear to us sharemilkers need to enhance their business skill set across the board and as an industry. Life-long learning and mentoring needs to become a firm part of our culture.

“The report specifically highlights the need for all parties to carry out due diligence and to learn about negotiating key parts of their agreements.

“While the report contains decision trees, tables and even a wealth creation spreadsheet, it highlights the amount of information out there but it’s dispersed.

There’s need for a one-stop shop and arguably that’s a role for Federated Farmers,” Ciaran says.

NZ farmers now more efficient New Zealand’s farming practices are more efficient today than a decade ago, according to the Ministry for Primary Industries.

Farmers are using less land and less labour to produce a kilo of milk or meat than they were 10 years ago, according to MPI’s strategy team, which has investigated input and output trends in pastoral farming.

The team used select physical inputs and outputs to give a picture of dairy and dry stock farmers as managers of these resources.

The report sheds light on intensification in New Zealand pastoral farming and the relationship with productivity, says MPI strategy director James Palmer.

“When people talk about intensification of farming, they tend to refer to increasing animal numbers and fertiliser use per hectare.

“But in practice, these measures seem too simplistic to capture how pastoral farm management is changing. Farming has become increasingly sophisticated, and the data and analysis needs to be as well.”

The team used statistics from Statistics New Zealand, the Reserve Bank, Livestock Improvement Corporation and the Beef and Lamb Economic Service, along with MPI data. However, the data was limited and the analysis goes back to 2002.

Figures show that sheep/beef farming continues to be the dominant agricultural land use in New Zealand, occupying more than

four times the area used by the second largest, dairying.

Data showed, however, that increasingly, dairy support activity occurs on properties not classed as dairy farms. Between 2002 and 2009, the number of dairy cows being run on sheep/beef properties increased by 44 per cent.

Overall, the MPI team calculated that the average number of dairy cattle run per hectare increased by about five per cent between 2002 and 2009. Dairying has also increased production per hectare and production per animal.

During the same period, the average number of sheep run per hectare decreased by about 11 per cent and beef cattle decreased by eight per cent, while average beef and lamb production per hectare went down slightly.

The industry routinely tests fruit for a wide range of residues, but would not have carried out such an extensive programme if concerns hadn’t been raised by growers injecting the product KeyStrepto

in a desperate attempt to save vines infected with Psa-V. The resulting costs have angered many growers, but the actions that could be taken against them – if any – lies in the hands of the Ministry of Primary Industries, not NZKGI, Neil says.

Fresh look at Katikati heritage The community ownership of the Katikati Museum will be celebrated with an official opening ceremony on June 23.

The museum traces the region’s history, with exhibits on Maori history though the area’s settlement with the establishment of farm blocks, the Kauri logging industry and development of agriculture, alongside the town.

“We’ve made a range of changes with the displays, we’ve got new stock in the souvenir shop and there have been changes in the café – so there has been lots happening.”

Alistair says the opening event will start at 10.30am with egg and spoon races, a sack race, hopscotch and other old-fashioned games to bring the past to life.

The museum has operated with a roster of volunteers since the change of ownership in April, while the café is in negotiations to be let to a private operator.

Alistair says everyone involved is excited with the progress made since taking over and are getting great feedback from visitors and volunteers.

He says they are interested in hearing from anyone wanting to volunteer or help.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council helped the trust with its purchase by guaranteeing the trust’s loan to enable the trust to borrow at lower interest rates.

The loan will be repaid from grants from charitable trusts and other fundraising events.

A community campaign to save the museum’s collection began last March after the owners, who had been trying to sell the museum, announced plans to sell off artefacts.

This winter, the YMCA in conjunction with Waimarino will be hosting the camp of all snow camps. Attendees will spend five days, from July 9-13, at Whakapapa being instructed in skiing or snowboarding.

Waimarino’s OSCAR manager says the camp is a great opportunity for the two camps to work together to make the camp truly sensational.

The second is a three-day theatrical workshop at the Gate Pa centre, which will provide children the opportunity to try dance, drama, playwriting and directing, theatresports and costume design and making, culminating in a final day performance for other holiday programme attendees and their families.

Tauranga Foster Hope coordinator Katrina Bain has been blown away by the generosity of the Western Bay of Plenty community during the annual Foster Hope Pyjama Drive.

With three weeks to go, the branch has collected 116 pairs of pyjamas for children in foster care, 60 of which have been donated since the article appeared in The Weekend Sun on June 1.

Katrina says the process of handing them out has already begun.

“The first pair of pyjamas found its way to a new home last week, along with one of the kits we provide to a young foster child who arrived at her placement with nothing.

“It was such a blessing to see the joy on her face and know that we really are making a difference to these kids.

“This is such a fantastic cause. The difference something small like a pair of pyjamas or one of our kits can make in a child’s life who has been taken into foster care is amazing. It’s about making a hard and scary time a little bit easier.”

The pyjama drive will continue until the end of June, but the items included within the kits will be collected on an ongoing basis. The real causes of heart disease High cholesterol is a known risk factor for developing coronary heart disease but the real culprits are high levels of artery inflammation coupled with low antioxidant levels.

The first stage in the formation of plaques is oxidation (free radical damage) of cholesterol trapped in heart artery walls. The second stage is an inflammatory response and thirdly the formation of plaques that restrict blood flow. There are a number of antioxidants that protect cholesterol from becoming oxidised, especially vitamins E, C and co-enzyme Q10.

The widely respected Physicians Health Study has identified five main risk factors for sudden death from CHD. The number one risk factor is low levels of the Omega 3 fats. Those with high levels of Omega 3 only have a 10% risk of CHD while those with a low index have almost 10 times the risk.

Risk factor two is background inflammation – those with the highest levels of background inflammation, as measured by CRP (C Reactive protein), have the highest risk of heart disease. This comes as no surprise as Omega 3 and various antioxidants lower

CRP. In heart health programmes I invariably include at least 200mg of 95% grape seed extract, 400IU of vitamin E, all the other antioxidants groups and a full B vitamin complex and Omega 3.

Risk factor 3 is your ‘good’ HDL cholesterol. HDL measures cholesterol returning from your cells to your liver to be recycled. The next two risk factors are almost a dead heat for fourth equal.

Both high levels of LDL cholesterol and high levels of the highly destructive radical amino acid homocysteine are risk factors. Homocysteine is easily neutralised by B vitamins.

Calling all organ donors Western Bay of Plenty residents are being asked to donate their organs as the Government campaigns to raise both the rate of live and deceased donors.

CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME

Bay of Plenty MP and Health Minister Tony Ryall says 186 people received transplants last year, but many more are still on the waiting list.

Of those waiting to receive organ transplants, 600 are just for new kidneys.

Organ donation saves the lives of people with severe heart, lung and liver disease, and improves the length and quality of lives of people with kidney and pancreas failure, says Tony.

“We are investing $2 million over four years to increase training and support for intensive care health professionals to identify dying patients who might become donors and give greater support to their families.”

Tony says the Government is also investing another $1.75 million to increase live organ donation by employing dedicated staff who can support and guide family and friends while they make the decision to become donors.

“Some patients requiring a transplant will have a family member or friend willing to donate an organ, such as a kidney, but because of different blood or tissue types they are incompatible.

“So we’re spending a further $250,000 to explore the option of establishing a national donor exchange scheme, where we can mix and match several

incompatible donor and recipient pairs together so each recipient gets a compatible donor.”

Tony hopes to give many more people who need a transplant renewed lives and reduce expensive health care costs, such as dialysis.

“Despite tight financial times, the Government has made $435 million available for Vote Health in 2012/13, bringing the total spend to $14.12 billion.

“This demonstrates the National Government’s commitment to protecting and growing public health services.”

New number for Women’s Refuge Tauranga Women’s Refuge community social worker Sheryll Fougere wants women to know that the crisis line number is now 0800 8673 3843 or 0800 86 Refuge.

The new cellular friendly toll free phone number connects to a 24-hour, seven-day service manned by staff and trained volunteers. Anyone concerned about domestic violence can call for help and support.

“We’ve changed the number so that people who might only have a cell phone can now also call for free, says Tauranga Women’s Refuge manager Hazel Hape.

The existing local calling number 07 541 1311 will remain active but people who might only have a cell phone can now call without worrying about the cost.

Diabetes numbers on the rise The number of people who developed diabetes has increased by 10 per cent, with around 300 people in the Bay of Plenty diagnosed with the disease last year.

Bay of Plenty District Health Board, planning and funding team manager Mike Agnew says the increase in the number of diabetics nationally relates to nonmodifiable population factors such

as a growing population size, age structure, ethnic mix and secular mortality trends.

“Evidence suggests that these factors alone account for over two thirds of the growth.

“The remaining one third is attributable to modifiable factors such as health care and more recently obesity prevalence.”

Mike says there has also been detection of the condition by health professionals during recent years, which he believes

will attribute to a future increase in the number of people diagnosed. According to a Ministry of Health survey, more than 208,000 people in New Zealand have diabetes.

This rate of increase in diabetes prevalence means that on average, a staggering 50 more people were diagnosed with the condition every day of the past year, says Diabetes New Zealand national president Chris Baty.

He says the growth is fuelled mainly by Type 2 diabetes which is being linked to growth of obesity in New Zealand’s population.

This is the view of Fun Sticks programme development coordinator and Tauranga hockey stalwart Gill Gemming, who has overseen a 250 per cent increase in numbers in the Year 1-2 programme since 2010, from 60 to more than 150 taking part.

The Fun Sticks programme was piloted in Tauranga and Hamilton in 2010 and has been rolled out nation-

wide this year. Fun Sticks is designed to introduce the game to five and sixyear-olds, by teaching basic hockey and ball skills to teams of four with drills and games on smaller fields.

“By focusing on foundation skills it helps them get the basics right, and playing the game with smaller teams on a smaller field means they are going to get a lot more touches on the ball, which is what it’s all about.”

Increased numbers has prompted satellite Fun Sticks programmes to be set up in Papamoa, Te Puna, Oropi and Paengaroa this year, on top of centres already running in Katikati, Pillans Point and at Tauranga Boys’ College.

In our own country we kill around 18,000 babies a year through abortion.

The staunchest pro-choice advocates called such a possibility ‘ridiculous propaganda’ when more liberal laws were drafted several decades ago,

these days the reality hardly bothers the general public. In Holland, the land of VE law he so admires they have in recent years been debating and drafting guidelines around the euthanasia of newborn infants. And so it goes.

The Church he so despises is the only organisation that for 2000 years has held to a consistent moral teaching regarding the sanctity of life.

I suggest he study it completely and fully come to understand what it means, says and does not say before attempting to ridicule it.

More evidence of pre-Maori settlement I don’t know what documentary evidence Peter Dey (Sun 8 June) has to back his statements “Maori were the first settlers in NZ” and “There were no Moriori here before Maori arrived”.

Maureen Anderson in her letter mentions some of the historical documented finds around the country as evidence to the contrary.

Here is some additional published evidence to the contrary.

Julius von Haast in 1868 visited Bruce Bay on the West Coast, and was given a stone chisel and a sharpening stone which had been found five metres deep in the ground under a massive tree. They were found by gold miners clearing a claim of trees.

The trees were of a size to be 1000 years old. The site was estimated to be 1,500 to 2000 years old (Source Ian Wishart’s book The Great Divide).

has been carbon dated and the results suggests it could have been used around 900 to 1000 AD. (Source Ian Wishart’s book The Great Divide).

The suggested date of 1350 AD for Maori migration could not account for either of the above pieces of evidence.

The majority of our teachers are undoubtedly genuine people with the interests of their pupils at heart. They would not be in the job otherwise.

However the teacher unions and other organisations seem to have been taken over by people whose motives are not always clear.

Lately we have seen vulnerable, easily-led children being used by some teachers for the teachers’ own aims. I refer to the occasion when children were

Another excellent and enlightening book is Encircled Lands by Judith Binney which covers Te Urewera, 1820 – 1921 and is also based on documentary evidence. Good reading.

‘More humane’ swan controls ‘No consultation’ on So the Eastern Fish and Game Council, Manager, Rob Pitkethley, says they have a responsibility to keep the Black Swan population down to a manageable size.

What does he call a manageable size?

Many reasons were given as to why they need to be culled. The duck shooters of the region are never going to offer any practical solution but a few unbiased comments wouldn’t go amiss.

If there were 851 Black Swans in 1980 and 5010 in 2010, what possible purpose is there in slaughtering 200 birds per year? Seems like Fish and Game are not interested in reducing numbers back down to a few hundred. Just get rid of 200 birds annually – what good is that?

The Black Swan population could be controlled at the egg stage but apparently the Fish & Game Council or even our local Council are not interested in that option. DOC would appear to have no opinion at all.

By all means let’s control the numbers but with a more humane method – most countries apart from NZ would never allow this slaughter to occur. After reading letters to Editors from duck shooters, hunters and sports people, I realise that nothing will change and in ten years time we will still be holding

Back then the harbour was bubbling with fish and various sea life - what do people see when they swim today in the harbour? Where are the marine reserves we so badly needed?

All good intentions from many but the problem is not solved nor will be solved with the cruel culling method.

Thames-Coromandel council bucks trend, dropping rates I read that the Christchurch council signalled a 7.5% increase in rates and there was a ratepayer revolt. I previously read that council had signalled a 10.5% increase in Tauranga rates.

We, the ratepayers of Tauranga are so inured to excessive rate increases that we just ‘shut up and pay up’.

How interesting to note that the new Thames Coromandel DC Mayor, Glen Leach and his new council Chief Executive Officer have delivered a 1% rate decrease in this rating year and are proposing a decrease of more than 5% for the 2012/13 year.

The Mayor comments that “we know times are tough for our people and this council is determined to buck the national trend and deliver rates savings where we can. Even across the 10 years,

the average increase will only be 1.9% which is a fair and affordable approach in these uncertain times”. He also comments that they hadn’t cut back on spending in the ‘right places’.

Thames Coromandel DC is not a city but it is a grouping of towns that have to cope with huge influxes of absentee home owners, holiday makers and tourists etc, because their towns are situated on very desirable coastlines. Their infrastructure is designed, built, and/or modified with the extra capacity to cope with the shock loadings of extra people.

Their collective growth rate is also equal to Tauranga.

With reference to the relocated bus stops on Fraser street, especially the one at the Chadwick Road end this was done without consulting the residents of the area, the ones that matter – the bus users.

I understand that a very few complaints were received

by Council that it was a hazard. What nonsense.

In all the years of existence there have been no accidents or incidents, just disgruntled motorists, probably, the ones who turn the corner at speed disregarding pedestrians and cyclists. I know – I live on the corner! I could see the bus stop.

This area is well populated and with many elderly who have no transport, and mothers with school children who have to cross the road. I am not able to carry much weight for any distance and that bus stop was a godsend as I only had to cross Fraser Street (a feat in itself ) to my house.

I could not carry shopping this extra distance from the new stop.

The original space is now marked for parking. What is the difference – cars or buses joining the line of traffic? None. Why two stops very close – Pemberton Park and Yatton Park. No brownie points either for moving the Waimapu Street stop further north – another road to cross.

Rates disappointing It would appear that the councillors will be able to shortly announce just a modest rate rise for the 2012/13 financial year, but an increase all the same which is, in my view, still disappointing.

As advised by Cr Faulkner the increase has been kept to a relatively low level due to a reversal of the decision to alter the water charging basis and also a significant drop in interest rates which has resulted in the Council’s interest costs, on its $350 million plus of debt reducing.

However inevitably in the future interest rates will once again increase from the historically low levels that they are currently at and this should be of concern.

Due to the huge debt that this Council currently has just a 1% increase in borrowing interest rates will result in a minimum of a 4% increase in overall rates so imagine the position should average borrowing interest rates increase by 2% which in the future is quite possible.

Rather than being satisfied with just a relatively low rate rise the councillors of 2012 should be planning, for the future, and endeavouring to reduce the overall rate cost basically in anticipation of them increasing when borrowing interest rates once again rise as proceeding on this basis would provide a cushion against a situation that, at the time, they will have little or no control in.

TECT old boys ‘time to retire’ I attended the recent TECT candidate information meeting, which purported to be very informative, and an opportunity to discover what would be involved. That was until the Broadway musical took over...

It appeared as though the two current trustees in attendance, Mr Cronin and Mr Collings, had a clear agenda, and that was to use this meeting as a platform to conduct their own staged Q&A session, with pre-approved questions from insiders. Their aim, to misdirect and to discourage us from running against them.

The focus was how immensely time consuming every application is, and how there was far too much information to take on board prior to every meeting. Personally I would expect any board of Trustees to be fully informed before making decisions on distribution of funds. Poor old boys, obviously this has become too much for you both, you should do the honourable thing and step aside, to allow people who won’t find it such a hindrance to assist in growth our community.

I have put myself forward as a candidate and hope that Trust Power customers can see that having a Trustee who is in touch with modern business practice which will be far more beneficial to our community, rather than having ‘the old boys’ whom are clearly out of kilter and are more interested in throwing insults around to deflect from their own inability to make unbiased and well conceived decisions.

On page 3 of the Weekend Sun, June 8, serious questions have been raised (part of my 10/5/2012 10-year plan submissions to TCC) about the grant that TECT approved to be paid to TCC, but not TCVL(Baypark).

There is an alternate motivation for this money merry-go-round: Mayor Crosby said the TECT grant was paid to TCVL to “help out with their cash position”. TCVL is technically insolvent. A ratepayer letter of comfort from TCC was required by Audit NZ. It is an offence to trade while insolvent and to continue to trade whilst insolvent, the letter of comfort does not remedy the trading losses, or I believe the real motivation for diverting these funds to TCVL was so as $2.1m of TECT tax credits would be dropped on the way into Baypark’s hands. But TCVL is not entitled to these credits. The benefit to TCVL (also TCAL and Tauranga City Investments Ltd as a group) of the tax credits is that they are available to be allocated to shareholders rather than making tax payments for RWT. No costs of constructing the TECT Arena have been paid by TCVL to date, TECT approved $5.9m for the specifically for the biulding costs of TECT Arena only.

Will we ever know the truth here.

Sadly, after 10 years involvement, I have parted ways with the Tauranga National Jazz Festival.

The Tauranga Jazz Society Festival Committee have expressed that they wish to contract the size of the festival and present only middle of the road jazz acts. This is not my vision for the now internationally recognised festival for which I have been artistic caretaker for the last 5 years.

Through your column I would like to thank the many Tauranga musicians and volunteers, some of whom are my personal friends, who have helped stage the last 5 festivals which I have been involved in as both a Director (in 2008) and Artistic Director ( 2009 to 2012). It is a matter of some concern to me that the perceived failure of the 2012 jazz festival has been personalised and that I and the Festival Director have been held solely responsible in much of your press coverage in the last two months. All

decisions taken by the festival team were signed off by the Tauranga Jazz Society Festival Committee.

The responsibility for both the successes and occasional failures in the festival fortunes over the last 50 years now rests squarely with them. Thanks for the great music and memories.

TECT leadership, transparency Michael Cooney’s advert in The Weekend Sun clearly demonstrates to the people of Tauranga why TECT needs new leadership.

The Chair of TECT clearly shows he does not understand the meaning of transparency.

The “transparent” TECT consultation for the indoor sports and exhibition centre (TISEC) grant did not tell you: - the business case council presented to TECT was full of fanciful and unexplained assumptions; - Mayor Crosby’s reported excuse for not considering a credible $9 million less expensive TISEC pre-quote; was all the money saved would go back to TECT. - I sent TECT Trustees the article explaining the Mayor’s flagrant disregard for how council spent millions of your community’s limited funds, the other 5 Trustees (including the other two standing for re-election) sat on their hands and did nothing.

The council has already had to pump an extra $5 million of your money into the TISEC. The TECT Chair cites benchmarking against other trusts as an indication

TECT is being run well. Senior Deloittes consultants explained to the Chair of TECT the uselessness of benchmarking against other poorly performing trusts and organisations.

If you don’t vote, or you don’t vote for change; your wallets and your community will continue to suffer for the benefit of a select few.

Mayor Crosby responds:

Mr Groos is wrong in many respects concerning the TISEC. Firstly whilst it is early days the actuals are aligning or exceeding the business case presented to TECT. Secondly there was an open tender process which attracted five bidders.

None were $9 million dollars less that the successful tender which was the lowest negotiated price.

Thirdly the Council has not pumped an extra $5 million into TISEC, it in fact came in under budget. In the light of these and other false allegations promoted by Mr Groos, one must seriously question his competencies to be a TECT trustee now or in the future.

I nearly died laughing at the rubbish that you produce! On a serious note, can any one tell me why we don’t see claims by one Maori tribe against another? The Maori were a warlike people, [just like my ancestors in Ancient Britain],who were constantly taking property and land from other tribes, so I would have expected, that once a tribe recieved a payout from the government, they would be inundated with claims from the tribes they had decimated in the dim, distant past.

In answer to Maureen Anderson (8 June), all supposed remains of pre-Maori settlements in New Zealand have simple more credible explanations.

In 1969 Michael King had a piece of the Ruapuke wreck checked out.

It was 100 year old totara not pre-Maori. The Takiroa rock drawings have a boat with sails and a man on a horse not pre-Maori. The Moeraki boulders are too big to be cannon balls. Slag at Le Bons Bay is more likely from Maori cooking fires than ancient Chinese iron smelters. Scientists no longer accept an age of 2000 years for any rat bones.

There is no credible evidence of pre-Maori settlements in New Zealand. Professional historians (Michael King, James Belich) agree that before Maori arrived in New Zealand there was no other race of people settled here.

In answer to Robin Bishop (8 June) Treasury figures show that Treaty settlements cost less than 1% of Government spending for the year 2011. For the previous 17 years Government spending totalled $1000 billion (Treasury), and Treaty settlements totalled $1 billion (OTS). So settlements averaged one tenth of 1% (0.1%) of Government spending per year. Only John Key knows future settlement plans.

Treasury figures show that Treaty settlements are economical, and Maori are not ripping off the taxpayer. The current settlement process has taken 27 years because of a lack of urgency from Governments, not because of repeated spurious claims. The settlement process is dragging on too long but it is not Maori doing the dragging.

Money go round

Regarding last week’s story about the $6m TECT funding of the Event Centre.

The TECT 2009 – 2010 Annual report stated the $6m had been approved for the Tauranga City Council, but Tauranga City Venues Ltd claim in a footnote in their 20102011 annual report they received “a gross distribution of $5,573,240 from TECT”.

This sum does not appear anywhere in their accounts but that didn’t stop them from loaning $3,898m to “Tauranga City Council (TECT Funding)”. What happened to the missing $1,675,240m?

The Council will be repaying the loan which raises the question; where did the money come from to pay the contractors who built the Event Centre and what will TCVL do with their returned loan which was given

by TECT solely to help pay for the centre?

Knighthoods and hypocrisy A brief insight on the Queen’s Birthday Awards and Gongs! The Knighthoods are usually reserved for rich business people, those that push their own barrows, Judges, doctors, professional sports people or ex-politicians and so on.

Almost without exception these people have earned large sums of money in their various fields and that surely can’t be counted as being a public service. For heaven’s sake, they are being paid for what they do. Now they are given a licence to perform on the lucrative public speaking circuit if they so wish.

If history is anything to go by, Knighthoods were always a good guide as to who to avoid and

nothing much has changed. It’s a pity they were ever reinstated, presumably only to give some perceived respectability to recipients when the irrelevant New Zealand honours were sufficiently non-descript enough to meet the need. In other words, they meant very little to the NZ public generally and that’s as it should be. The Order of New Zealand (ONZ) is something else again.

I am appalled at the hypocrisy of Mr Cullen in accepting a Knighthood, having due regard to his track record in promoting and supporting the abolition of them, it is the one good thing achieved

by Labour in over a decade of power.

Funny how things can change at the last minute I had been planning the third part of my look at the Jazz Festival, but we’ll put that on hold for the moment since the trickle of local album releases has suddenly turned into a veritable flood. At least in Tauranga terms.

I’m still buzzing over the gypsy jazz of the debut Bonjour Swing CD Flame: Marion Arts fantastic singing (and songs); Robbie Laven’s spectacular acoustic guitar; and Oscar Laven’s trumpet playing – is there any blown instrument that he can’t play?

I’d recommend you check it out at www.fragilecolours.com, though it’s possible that the band will be briefly out of action while Marion recovers from a bizarre incident in which she was head-butted in the face by a flying goat named Priscilla. Whether the injury was connected to her ukulele classes is unconfirmed.

But, as I mentioned, there seems to be a lot of new music about.

Mount Maunganui band The Deeds, who have created quite a buzz over the past year, launched their first album recently at the Mauao Performing Arts Centre, where drummer Nick Ririnui is a tutor.

Indefatigable artist Dave Roy has just released his latest CD, At A Certain Moment, again backed by an eclectic selection of Bay musicians, this time

including Brilleaux drummer Ian “Beano” Gilpin, Bonjour Swing’s Oscar Laven on bassoon, and a 4-piece ukulele group.

And I just got an album from Te Puke alt country outfit Redwood Trail, a second collection of songs by singer Brad Taylor. On a cursory listening last night it was even better than Brad’s debut from a couple of years back which I liked very much. I don’t know much about these guys so will try and bring you some sort of profile in the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, this week sees the release of a career-spanning compilation from John Michaelz.

Having known John for many years I thought I’d pass this on to some fresh ears: see the review below from the very knowledgeable Mr Moon.

John is also planning a CD launch with his current band, The Usual, (who feature on two of the album’s new songs) at No 1 The Strand on Friday 6 July. It’s a great album – it should be a fun night!

“So far, so good…” is a road map to the musical journey Mr Michaelz has travelled over the past 25 years.

As the man puts it himself: “These songs in some crazy twisted way so far somehow sum up my life.”

Before I go any further, I have to say that I have Back Page 2

a fairly jaundiced view of ‘best of ’ collections, finding them (mostly), to be either cynical machinations to further cash in on long past glories, or self indulgent, narcissistic attempts at justifying pieces of music that achieve no greater merit upon repeat release.

“So far, so good…” is neither of those things. It is as the title states, John Michaelz so far, and for my money, so very good.

My first listen of this CD left me feeling a little confused and uncomfortable.

Excepting the last three songs, the track listing draws chronologically from Mr. Michaelz’s back catalogue (and various musical vehicles from Hard to Handle to Stone Babies to Kosher to solo), and as such, initially felt a little like disparate and dissociate clusters of tracks lacking in connection and continuity. flavourings, this music is informed by the blues, and wonderfully, strangely, magically, hangs together. From hard driven blues rock to hallelujah country blues; funky sleaze rock to dub’d up rock; punk blues to chuggin’ electric; even a taste of acoustic latino café stylings; such a smorgasbord of styles should sound fractured and fragmented, but amazingly, astonishingly, doesn’t.

And so it is ladies and gentlemen… the life and times (so far) of Mr. John Michaelz, starring as rock and ruin, slither and sleaze John; down-home, stomp it out, good ol’ boy Johnny; brother John wailin’ the gospel to the hallelujah chorus; and many more. Most ably and excellently aided and abetted by a collaboration of master musical cohorts second to none.

So far, so very, very good! In the immortal words of Oliver Twist: “Please sir, can I have some more?”

MONEYBALL Dir: Bennett Miller -Starring: Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman While it was vying for Oscar honours, the backers of Moneyball tried to convince people it wasn’t so much a film about baseball, just a film with baseball as the backdrop. Well that’s rubbish. Moneyball is absolutely about baseball. But don’t let that put you off – it’s a lot of fun.

Where Moneyball departs from your regular sports movie is that it’s not so much about what is happening on the field. It’s about the backroom stuff – picking the players, selecting the team – and it has found the perfect example of a management underdog story.

Pitt plays Oakland Athletics’ manager Billy Beane, stuck with a middling team with no chance to advance because the game is all about money and his side will never have enough to afford the best players.

Enter new Yale grad Peter Brand

(Jonah Hill) who has worked out a system to analyse players statistically, ignoring current wisdom about hiring “the best”. Together they see off the doubters and, with little money to work with, turn the game on its head.

It is, I understand, a true story, but the real pleasure is in watching Brad Pitt at his considerably charming best.

Like George Clooney, he really is nailing it these days. Hill makes a great foil and there is a strong support cast.

This is a well-made piece of drama, with all the class you would expect of a screenplay that comes from Steve Zaillian (Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) and Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network).

The world’s dumbest wannabe criminals (Danny McBride, Nick Swardson) kidnap a slacker smalltown pizza delivery boy (Jesse Eisenberg) in 30 Minute or Less . They want him to rob a bank for them. He, in turn, enlists his best friend (Aziz Ansari) and general chaos and confusion ensue. Coming from Ruben Fleischer, director of Zombieland, this is a short (80 minutes) sharp blast of disrespectful comedy, running on the frequently very funny improvisational interplay between the four leads. They bring a real zing to proceedings, keeping you invested in the characters even as implausibilities mount.

Coming from the Tribal Alliance and the band of Mission Indians, writer/director/actor Georgina Lightning’s American Evil takes an unsurprisingly Native American perspective on strange reservation events, kicked off by a schoolteacher’s frightening visions.

These lead her, along with visiting earthquake specialist Bradley Cooper, to a mysterious old schoolhouse where Bad Things Happened. A mass of past wrongdoings is uncovered in a somewhat heavy-handed collision of religion, politics and the supernatural but, best intentions aside, this is not a well-made film, blandly shot, indifferently written and acted.

Ned is the nicest guy in the world, though not the smartest or most motivated. He is Our Idiot Brother , forced to stay with each of his three sisters after being dumped by his girlfriend (who even keeps his dog, Willie Nelson). They’re a self-involved bunch, enough to drive anyone crazy, who naturally end up blaming the good-natured slacker for their problems.

Life lessons are subsequently learnt. The iffy concept is aided immeasurably by Paul Rudd’s charming central turn while the classy likes of Emily Mortimer, Elizabeth Banks, Zoey Deschanel and Steve Coogan make

the most of a somewhat wandering script.

Burning Man is a terrific-looking film. An Aussie outing, it follows Matthew Goode’s out-ofcontrol Bondi chef as he behaves increasingly irresponsibly towards his young son and everyone else around. But a portentous and spectacularly filmed opening car crash and the non-linear cut-up narrative suggest that there are weightier issues at play. What eventually emerges is an artily-constructed and quite moving study of grief and love. That very artiness will either attract or frustrate, particularly given the unhurried pacing.

Tauranga social housing boost Tauranga’s social housing stocks are set to be boosted following a Government announcement of plans to invest $25.3 million across the country.

The bulk of the funds are going into social housing projects in Auckland, but Tauranga will get five new twothree bedroom homes within the next 18 months from Accessible Properties NZ Ltd – the organisation that manages IHC’s 1100 properties across the country.

Accessible Properties has been allocated $8.25m for 60 new houses throughout the country for people with intellectual disabilities. The houses will be built in South Auckland (15), West Auckland (12), Hamilton (10), North Shore (7), Wellington (7), Christchurch (4) and Tauranga (5).

General manager Andrew Wilson says the areas had been identified following a survey of the members of the disa-

bled community that established it was increasingly difficult for them to find affordable accommodation in major centres.

Andrew says the sites for the Tauranga houses are still being finalised, and – along with all of its developments – is determined tenants will be in by January 2014. He says the houses are being designed specifically for people with intellectual disabilities as single storey properties and designed with large manoeuvring spaces, door-way widths and hall-ways.

“We are also making sure these homes are located in areas close to shopping centres, medical centres and areas where they are less likely to be discriminated against.”

Housing Minister Phil Heatley says over time social housing will complement state housing by providing a pathway to greater housing independence and, in some cases, home ownership.

Honouring the seniors in our community There are now more seniors in our community than there are teenagers.

The United States census bureau projects that by 2018 there will be more older adults than children on the planet.

This fact is already having a profound ripple effect on the economies of Western nations

and their superannuation schemes.

Economists now argue the burden of superannuation will place an intolerable tax load on a shrinking work force and that the age of entitlement has to be raised. This leaves many seniors feeling unwanted, undervalued and a burden.

Next we will see fresh arguments for euthanasia.

However, seniors are healthier and more enthusiastic about life than ever before, and are an untapped and unrecognised resource in our community.

They come from the ‘builder’ generation. They are the ones who sacrificed to build our nation. Now they are living longer, they still want to make a contribution to our community and leave a legacy that will outlast them.

When I visit in the community and I meet a senior I ask these questions: Do you have any connection with any Christian group? Most often they no

longer have any close contact with a church.

Did you go to Sunday school or Bible class when you were young? It is highly likely they did. A majority of seniors went to Sunday school.

Then I ask, “Did it do you any harm?” This may seem a strange question but allows them to tell me of their past experiences.

Finally my last question is. Do you know why people your age don’t go to church?

Often, the answer is: “Because no-one invited me.”

This is why at St. Enoch’s we are holding a Celebrate Seniors Sunday, which gives us a special opportunity to celebrate all seniors mean to God and invite neighbours along.

Celebrate Seniors Sunday I am excited to tell you about the Celebrate Seniors Sunday on June 17 at 9.30am at St. Enoch’s Presbyterian Church. At St. Enoch’s we honour age.

We are thankful we have older people in our congregation. We know the depth of experience and insight they bring.

To show our support and concern for the seniors in our community we are holding a Celebrate Seniors Sunday.

This will be a special service focusing on what it means to be blessed by God

with old age. It will be a celebration of age, including testimonies, humour and wisdom from the Bible. We will sing songs and hymns which will be very familiar to seniors. The service will include items that will touch your heart and fill you with a sense of awe and nostalgia. There will be humour that should bring a smile to your face. St Enoch’s are a friendly bunch of people and the service will be followed by a special morning tea. Please come.

Is unconditional love possible?

I hear so many people saying “I fell in love” or “I was in love, and now I’m not” statements based on disposable feelings. But the reality is, real love, unconditional love is a commitment based on a decision.

Unconditional or no

strings love isn’t based on the other person’s performance or behaviour, you love the person not their actions, actions that you may dislike or even detest. That’s why marriage is a covenant relationship based on trust, not a contract based

on mistrust that says I love you if you do this for me, or I love you because of the benefits, and if you don’t deliver I’m out of here.

If there are strings attached, it isn’t real love.

My family may disappoint me, and I may not always like their behaviour but my love for them is unconditional, a separate issue.

As followers of the Way, the Truth and the Life our Messiah who shows us unconditional love and unconditional forgiveness in spite of our behaviour. Let’s demonstrate the proof of that relationship by loving one another as he loves us, unconditionally. Shalom.

I’ve just woken up yawning, after sleeping for what seems like two days, to the news that researchers have found that dogs yawn after hearing their owners yawn.

Now all this sounds like some researchers have far too much time on their hands to be studying this sort of useless information. But since I’m dog tired from an incredibly hectic couple of days playing with my girlfriends at the lake, it is a timely piece of useless information.

The boss and his buddy were pretty tuckered out to, after kayaking through chilly winter lakes, launching into manic wild goose chases and getting tangled up in a live electric fence in his wetsuit. I can tell you, his facial expressions went quite a lot further than a yawn, and so did the language.

So these researchers apparently recorded the sound of 25 dog owners yawning. They then played these to the loyal pooches, along with the sound of one stranger yawn.

They found the dogs were five times more likely to yawn when they heard their owner.

The researchers say that this proves dogs have the capacity to empathise with humans. I certainly empathised with the boss while he was twitching and fizzing in the blackberry bush under a wire with a healthy voltage.

to use a camera. His buddy would’ve poured more water on to research the effects of extra moisture on a shortcircuiting hunting buddy, if he’d been able to stop laughing long enough. I made a mental note to keep my long wet tail in the lowered position. Ady just yawned. With a tail that short, she can’t see all the fuss about electric fences. Besides, she just thought he was breakdancing.

A previous study by researchers found dogs can mimic yawning when they see a human doing it. But the latest research showed the bond goes even deeper, as dogs respond in similar numbers to an audio recording of a yawn.

I have been known to respond well to the mimicked sound of the refrigerator door opening.

Yet another researcher isn’t that convinced, pointing out other studies have found dogs can look guilty even when we are not, so people should not always believe what their animals are telling them!

Anyway, Ady and I and our best friend Jess from the lake had a fab time, charging around after sticks and chooks (now they look guilty!) swimming in the lake and rampaging around the bush. At the end of a fantastic weekend we all were loaded back into the wagon, the boss yawned, the buddy yawned, me and Ady empathised with a synchronised yawn. It was a deep sleep back home in the back of the wagon.

Thanks to Chris and Keith and Jess for a great time. Sorry about the holes in the lawn. I think the guilty chooks did it.
