On-going scuffling between mobile traders and shopkeepers continued in council this week with city councillors promising to readdress the issue.

Rules were changed this summer to allow mobile traders along Marine Parade to stay in one spot for an hour instead of 30 minutes.

They also sold the rights to trade the six top spots along Marine Parade by tender – on top of the minimum $1200 mobile traders have already paid for the mobile shop and food licences.

The 60 minute rule is unenforceable because it does not include sufficient detail, says the council’s legal advice. There’s no indication

how far they have to move at the end of the 60 minutes, resulting in traders parking their own vehicles nearby, so they had somewhere to move to.

As one mobile trader commented, finding a park along Marine Parade, between Grace Avenue and Pacific Avenue, at the height of the holiday season is uncertain, even without a trailer.

This issue was forced by eight Marine Parade and Adams Avenue shop owners who demanded a meeting in January with Mount councillors David Stewart, Wayne Moultrie, and staff.

Don Skidmore says the effect of the council’s mobile trader decision is to create an unsightly commercial enclave on the beach front. He says it’s degrading the

ambience of the beach. Don also owns Monte Gelato under the twin towers.

He complained of noisy generators, and their fumes assaulting pedestrians. Power leads running through drains, large awnings over the footpath. He also complained about traders’ oversized trailers, and of traders securing car parks by staying there over night.

The issues with power leads and generators can be resolved by council installing power sites, says councillor Murray Guy, but it would cost the traders.

He wondered if the complaints from eight Marine Parade cafes were more about the fact the mobile traders were competition.

Kayaker rescued from harbour

A paddler who got into trouble when his kayak became swamped in the harbour was rescued from a channel marker by boat this week.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, was in a kayak when he got into trouble in the water about 400metres from Fergusson Park in Matua around 12.30pm on Wednesday.

Surfer Jeff Dent from Guatemala, who was at the park at the time, went out to assist the man before the two were picked up by a boat and returned to shore at Sulphur Point Marina.

The man, described by police as “very cold and shaken”, was taken to Tauranga Hospital by St John Ambulance paramedics to be checked out.

Kenya police: Kiwi not at wheel

The claim that former Bethlehem College student David Fellows was driving the mini-van that crashed in Kenya killing four people is being refuted by Kenya Police.

Kenya Police Traffic Commandant Samuel Kimaru told TVNZ this week that Kenya Police believe Christopher Mmata, the Kenyan man who died in the crash, was the driver of the mini-bus.

Bethlehem College principal Eoin Crosbie says the school is holding its own inquiry but the focus is on school procedure and not police matters.

Nation hit by spam attack

Hundreds of Kiwis’ email accounts were hijacked this week after hackers attacked YahooXtra accounts.

The email service was hit by two separate attacks the first was a phishing attempt where emails containing a link to a suspicious website in an attempt to gain confidential information and credit card details.

A second attack compromised people’s emails sending out emails to people’s contact lists without the account holder’s permission.

Clampdown on freedom camping dropped

Tauranga’s City Council’s campaign against freedom campers has been put on the back burner until legal issues are clarified.

It will be dropped from the Street Use and Public Places bylaw and taken up later, possibly in a modified form.

The council is acting on confidential legal advice and the weight of submissions from the NZ Motor Caravan Association – which has obtained legal opinion saying the Tauranga approach is illegal.

Acting CEO Christine Jones advised against making its own legal advice public, saying it could expose the council to legal action. The Freedom Camping Act was

rushed through in 2011 to head off a perceived nuisance created by campervan travelling and Rugby World Cup fans. In 2011, Tauranga City Council was updating its Street Use and Public Places bylaw to shut the loophole permitting Steve Crow to ride his annual Boobs on Bikes parade through town.

Council leapt on the chance to hand out $200 tickets to ‘freedom campers’ and included a badly thought through blanket ban on freedom camping in the city, except for five parks in Tauranga; Memorial Park; Greerton Park; Fergusson Park; Manne Park; and Waikareao Foreshore Reserve.

It means the council can only issue tickets on those five named reserves. Any freedom campers elsewhere in the city cannot be

Pounding out the beat in Tauranga Police foot patrols are being deployed to high pedestrian areas in the Western Bay of Plenty as police aim to prevent criminal activity in the region.

Nationally, foot patrols have risen by 70 per cent in the last year, with patrols in the Western Bay of Plenty increasing from 457 in December 2011 to 560 in December 2012.

The biggest perceived issue is litter, but Customer and Environmental Services group manager Peter Frawley is unable to confirm the rubbish complained of is in fact produced by freedom campers.

This is over and above the day-to-day work checks and patrols.

“We know from experience that this approach works and most importantly we know that foot patrols and high visibility policing provides community reassurance.”

Clifford says the ultimate aim is to keep communities safe and that is the ethos behind New Zealand’s Prevention First model of policing where prevention is at the forefront of reducing crime and victimisation.

“By making sure that we have our staff in the right places at the right time we have greater control over the criminal environment and can tackle some of the root causes of crime rather than simply reacting to it.

“Not only does it provide reassurance, it impacts on offending, which was clearly reflected in the 17.4 per cent reduction in crime in Western Bay of Plenty recorded in the most recent fiscal year statistics.”

Student’s MP role Year 13 Mount Maunganui College student Lydia Verschaffelt could speak on behalf of the city’s students after being nominated to be included in Youth Parliament 2013.

This follows Tauranga MP Simon Bridges’ invitation to the Bay’s youth to apply to be a part of Youth Parliament 2013.

The nomination caught Lydia by surprise when Mount Maunganui College principal Russell Gordon nominated her a candidate on Wednesday this week.

“It was a bit of a surprise but I’m looking forward to giving it a go.”

Lydia, 16, has a strong interest in New Zealand politics and says students would want her to speak about New Zealand’s place internationally, including the selling of New Zealand’s assets.

“With our generation everything’s changing. So it’s looking at things like certain professions that might not be necessary in the future and looking forward to making our Government adaptable and flexible with the changes that will certainly be coming when we’re in the work force,” she says.

Anyone aged between 16 to 18 years old can apply to be involved in the Youth MP selection process for the Tauranga electorate.

Successful applicants will join 121 other youth representatives

nationwide to represent Tauranga in Wellington at Youth Parliament on July 16 and 17.

Those interested are invited to submit a 500 word essay answering the question: what will be a key challenge facing New Zealand in 2020? Applicants will then be shortlisted and interviewed by a panel. Nominated Youth MPs will hold the title from May 1 to December 31 2013. They are expected to engage with their community during this time so all New Zealand youth have the opportunity to have their voice heard. The success of last year’s initial New Year garden party and lantern festival has prompted the New Zealand China Friendship Society’s Tauranga branch to make it an annual event.

Branch president John Hodgson says there has been a surge in interest during the past six months from people wanting to learn more about China – largely because of the growing economic opportunities the country offers.

Chinese Community School head teacher Vivien Ting says there is a ‘significant increase’ in interest in

language classes this year.

Vivien says increased student numbers are coming from both adults and school pupils, motivated both

by China’s economic opportunities and support from the Chinese Government, which is offering 100 study scholarships for senior secondary students in New Zealand.

Students this week have been making traditional Chinese lanterns and learning about the Chinese New Year period – a 15 day event from the first day of New Year to culminate with the traditional lantern festival, enjoyed by many.

The rumble of the GJ Gardner NZ Offshore Powerboat competitors is about to hit town for the second race of the series this weekend.

Hosted by Bay of Plenty Tourism and Acceleration on Water, the high speed, waterspraying event is on Saturday, February 16. This year sees a change of base for the Tauranga race, with the set up of team tents and a race pit area in The Strand car park at Tauranga Waterfront.

NZ Offshore Powerboat Racing president Kelly Smith says it will be an exciting

weekend on the water as the Offshore competitors share their playground with GP Hydroplanes, which start racing Saturday afternoon, as does the Tauranga Sailing Club Regatta.

“Big boats, fast boats, petrol power and wind power – there is something for everyone.”

After an upset two second win at Taupo by Fairview Windows & Doors, fellow Superboat contender Fujitsu will be out for vengeance this weekend.

They won’t be the only two fighting it out: Trans-Tasman competitor Team 3 is hoping for bigger seas, to show off what their Australian-owned 36’ Victory Cat is made of.

Carrying an extra 700kg (dictated by the Australian rules) they need a bit of a push from

turbulent waters that they didn’t get in Round 1 in Taupo last month. The 60 mile competitors will be racing on the same course, starting and finishing just off Sulphur Point.

The boats will speed around the inner harbour on a course resembling a short-handled paddle. With six boats not finishing at the season opening, the competition will be fierce as competitors try to make amends.

GJ Gardner NZ Offshore Powerboat racing starts at 11am Saturday, followed by the start of the two-day Hydroplane series and the Tauranga sailing regatta.

New police station is going up The new Tauranga Police Station on Monmouth Street is due to be completed in July.

The roof is already on the 3900sqm building and the internal framing is going up. Construction of the $20.8million complex started in January 2012 after the old building was torn down. New Zealand Police project manager Annabel Bayes says construc-

tion on-site is going well. “We are on track with everything. There have been no problems and everything is going according to plan.”

The new facility, expected to last for 20 years, is likely to cost $20.8 million to build. Western Bay of Plenty area commander Inspector Clifford Paxton says the opening of the new facility can’t come fast enough for Tauranga Police.

Six years since the Welcome Bay Community Centre shifted into temporary premises, it is finally moving to an expanded site today.

Centre manager Gerry Purcell is excited about the move from the shopping centre into the Welcome Bay Baptist church building, which offers four times more space.

“We have no immediate plan to change what we are already doing – the main plan is to do what we are doing better. We are pretty excited about it. At long last it’s starting to become a reality. Six years ago it was just a dream to have a big community centre.

Roman enthusiasts bringing history back to life Roman history enthusiasts from around the country are heading to Paengaroa this weekend for the first gathering aiming to build an educational centre to bring ancient culture to life.

Paengaroa farmer Kelvin O’Hara, who has organised the event on his deer farm, is expecting up to 30 Roman culture and history fans to share their love for the ancient culture and plan developing up to 10 acres of the property into a model ancient village.

“We’ll be consecrating the area, feasting and holding games, and there will be a series of workshops on Roman activities. We’ve got people teaching how to cook Roman bread and about the Roman’s traditional use of herbs.”

Kelvin says the village he is calling ‘Thithe Sensear’ (‘Home of archery’) will

comprise a market place, village and an amphitheatre to host both gladiatorial-type contests and theatre shows.

The centre has a strong focus on archery, with an area for archery and other artillery competitions, and a focus on five ancient archer cultures - Roman, Nordic, Mongolian, Celtic and American Plains Indians.

Proposed boutique ambience boost for Te Puke future Te Puke’s plans for a “neat boutique” ambience are one step closer following consultations by the town’s centre action group.

Driven by the Te Puke Economic Development Group, the action group formed by the town late last year has commissioned Page Henderson Architects in Tauranga to look at the various forms and functions of Jellicoe Street with the aim to make the town a preferred destination.

These changes come as a result of the group, consisting of town centre landlords, retailers and professional services, wanting to lift the product and service aspects of

the town and are supported by the Te Puke Community Board, Te Puke EDG and the Town Centre PCG. Te Puke Economic Development Group managing director Mark Boyle says through the form and function of the street they are looking at more off street parking, more pedestrian safety and a mix of residential and retail in the town centre to drive the town’s appeal.

“We want to make it a neat boutique place and the idea is to create a better ambience.”

The proposed changes will see less heavy traffic come through town which will be

diverted to the Tauranga Eastern Link and allow a more community feel.

The changes are currently in the planning stages, but the architects’ concepts and a proposed action plan will be taken to the public in three months’ time, says Mark.

“We organised the funding and work is underway. We hope to have some really good concepts to take to the public.”

Following the public consultation, the group will lobby to the New Zealand Transport Agency on the proposed changes to the street before work can begin.

Mount Maunganui to get a JAB Mauao (aka The Mount) is to get a JAB. That is, a Joint Administering Body and while we are doing puns that’s not another way of doing wacky backy!

From around the middle of the year, four elected members and four representatives from Maoridom will administer Mauao.

At present its run by the Mauao Steering Committee.

Ratepayers will continue to fund the annual cost of about $600,000 plus any unforeseen costs like fires, slips etc. These can cost plenty in past experience. An updated Reserves Management Plan is required – so elected members were told estimates for this are around $100,000.

All ratepayer funding will still be Council approved.

The new board will also have access to community funding to add to ratepayers contributions. Mauao is owned by Maori, with continued Crown involvement will be administered by the JAB and day to day management will be delivered through Council staff for the next few years. More than one million people walk around and over it during the year.

It is another of Tauranga’s many attractions that is understated. How many

A crowded jewel

Another jewel in Tauranga’s crown is McLarens Falls Park. It is becoming more well-known and appreciated for the beautiful spot it is. But it’s becoming a victim of its own success. Last month 11,000 vehicles went through. The cafe in the park (a great spot for a coffee) isn’t allowed to put a sign out on the highway but a public toilet sign is allowed? Result: many more urgent toilet calls to the new toilets. More usage equals more cost for incidentals and cleaning. Up at the camping ground there were up to 250 people a night during the holidays.

Unbelievably, the new ablutions block up their features – three showers in separate rooms but to ‘save’ costs only one toilet?

Go figure – talk about spoil the ship for a ha’penth worth of tar. It’s also time the lacklustre (to say the least) four long drops around the park were replaced.

Staff will be presenting a report seeking a little more funding to keep the current level of service. If you haven’t been up there, or it’s been a while since you visited, give yourself a treat and go.

Freedom camping

Lengthy debate around the way Council administers Central Governments’ so-called Freedom Camping Act which it rushed through before the Rugby World Cup. Mayor Stuart Crosby said it is an ill-defined piece of legislation. I agree.

What is freedom camping? Some might say it’s a tent, no toilet facilities and roughing it. But this legislation snares certified motorhomes which are entirely self-contained – toilet, shower, grey water storage.

So they can be parked in any lawful place but you aren’t allowed to sleep in it unless it is specifically permitted. Other vans have sleeping facilities only with no ablutions

amenities. So there needs to be distinctions. We all have different definitions and interpretations and it needs clarification. Staff are to bring back a report covering these and other issues focusing on the effects of allowing certified vehicles to stay overnight, unless specifically banned on reserves.

Practical parking

Council is to review, again, the hot potato issue of mobile vendors on Mount Main Beach during the holidays. Actually, it’s cold drinks and ice creams mainly but some of those licenced vendors are drawing a long bow with their licence. We saw photos of them occupying three car parks when they are only supposed to occupy one.

One vendor admitted to “subversive” parking manipulation. Required to move every hour, he parked a car in an adjacent parking space and played musical cars. Nonsense stuff. If vendors are to be there then there should be practical rules applied.

This is what a review will highlight.

Lengthy submissions

On other items, TCC is making a lengthy submission to the Productivity Commissions report to Central Government. This commission is being somewhat critical of Government’s involvement (successive Governments that is) in creating unnecessary costs and delays in how we go about business.

One part of the discussion is on a four year term for Government and there was a brief discussion of the effect such a move might have on Council. The discussion points seem simple. First year, to lull the people, second and third year to do the deeds and the fourth year to get re-elected. That’s how it seems to work in the States. Two years to get policies in place with limited political consequence seems a good idea – provided there are good policies. The contra is that four years of poor policies and ineffective government can mean even more damage to society. Some politicians might see the attraction of extending their job security.

A strategic asset

Ratepayers are likely to pay for debt reduction of four per cent a year on land at Te Tumu. That’s $400,000 a year. Larry Baldock and myself voted against this. The land is a strategic asset that will enable Council to fix stormwater problems at Papamoa and then be sold at some time in the future at a profit, so why saddle ratepayers at this time. Ratepayers will pay interest in the meantime.

Story told for a long time: the truth is we’re ageing The recent Rethinking Local Government conference had some great provocative speakers – including professor Natalie Jackson from Waikato University, talking about the realities of New Zealand the Bay of Plenty ‘s demographics. The story quite simply: We’re ageing.

The growth is in the 65-plus age group and that is mirroring the world wide story.

The youth growth is amongst the Maori population.

This is the story that our own social

gerontologist Carole Gordon has been telling us in the Western BOP for some time.

What Carole has also been urging us for some time is to regard our population ageing ‘growth’ as a huge opportunity as over 65’s will have a huge influence on markets, capital, labour force, housing, health services, families and communities.

Quite obviously the Maori youth ‘growth ‘also is full of influence and opportunities.

The WBOPL has the opportunity to model “opportunity taking” for ageing growth. We could do worse

than consider establishing a Centre of Excellence for Ageing that focused on all the opportunities. Again, another idea of Carole’s.

The challenge is who and how to progress the opportunities. Local Government has a role. That role is to facilitate the discussions and ideas on who and how.

As communities and societies we face extraordinary challenges. We need to turn the challenges to opportunities and that means having people involved in local government that can understand the opportunities and have the skills to facilitate sector and community wide thinking and action.

Cost-effective services in Bay The purpose of local government has changed to “meet the current and future needs of communities for good quality local infrastructure, local public services, and performance of regulatory functions in a way that is most cost-effective for households and businesses”.

It is a bit hard to define what “most cost-effective” means, but it is sure to be tested over the months ahead as the implementation of the new legislation gains traction. Prior to the change in purpose, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council had already put in place a programme to make sure it delivers a wide range of services in the most efficient and effective way possible. In the current ten year plan, council set efficiency targets for its CEO and a series of efficiency reviews of various activities are underway using benchmarking where possible.

The aim is to ensure we are operating in the “most cost-effective” way possible and have a culture of efficiency and effectiveness across the organisation.

Also under scrutiny are opportunities to deliver shared services with other local authorities. We already have some excellent examples of shared services – like the Geospatial Information Services (GIS) team we share with Tauranga City Council and provision of shared IT support to Opotiki, Kawerau and Whakatane district councils.

Not all efficiency and effectiveness actions will return financial savings – some may deliver more or better quality outcomes for the same or less. I look forward to receiving reports on our success.

Youth need goals, targets and more recognition We know about the baby boomers, the group that has been with us since the ’50s.

Governments since then have had to accommodate this population imbalance.

Business wooed the boomers as a major segment in our society and much of the image of a successful New Zealander refers to this relatively spoiled segment of society.

Unfortunately the rest of New Zealand has had difficulty achieving what the boomers considered their rights.

Another population aberration is underway at the moment and while we can see some of the evidence, it is hard for most to understand the problems of the current baby bust. The popula-

tion demographics explained to the recent local government conference revealed an increase in old people, the supposed problem I mentioned last week, but the collapse in numbers of our population of young people between 18 and 30 years is going to stay with us for another 50 years.

The biggest threat is to our workforce, with the loss of those people that actually do any work and even produce wealth. We hear of a skills shortage but the list of skills shortages published last week were all in management or office occupations.

No-one mentioned the shortage of skilled, trained and experienced workers.

Assuring alternatives are better The Tauranga conference on local government is a fading memory, although it was celebrated with justifiable enthusiasm by several columnists in this newspaper last week.

It appears that reform, otherwise called amalgamation, is flavour of the month.

We had reform in the 1990s. It established the very sensible principles that local government should be small enough to know and understand local issues, and be organised along social and geographic boundaries.

The web of councils that arose may be floundering in a mire of delegated responsibility and debt, but those problems just might not be due to size and scale.

Change may be good, but we need assurances that the proposed alternative really is better.

The Auckland reform is playing out, Northland is going the same way, and several unitary authorities already exist.

The experiments are running, and we should attempt to learn from them before making our own leap into the void.

Having a blast up North Dear Ady, Had a wonderful week. Boy, I could have done with your help! I know I’m a retriever by heritage, but there are some things that are even out of the league of a keen Labrador.

This is a picture of me on the beach with the stick that the boss refused to throw. I thought it would be a blast.

Turns out, it was a blast.

The navy guys came and blew it up. The boss tells more of the story in his column this week. All I know is the army dude started digging a hole in the sand to put the big grey stick in and I was keen to help.

After they blew it up, the crater was so big, I don’t

think you and I would have been much help at all.

And the bang, man it was loud. You think the boss’ old Remington packs a punch? You should have heard the noise when this mother went off.

With a boom that big, I expected half the ducks in the North Island to have rained down on us.

I’d like to put a charge like that under the Ginger Bastard from down the road.

Met a couple of cool dogs in my travels, Abbott the guide dog and Meg the wannabe surfer. Will show you the pictures next week. Till then, be good, and if someone says “You da bomb” – run.

A new group is seeking Tauranga residents with a passion for France to meet, socialise and discuss all things French. The group meets at Brooklyn Pizzeria on The Strand Francophile every second Thursday from 4.30-7pm, with the next meeting Andrea Gohns. scheduled for February 28.

“We are trying to unite all interested parties who share these common interests to meet regularly,” says organiser Andrea Gohns.

“The idea is to meet other like-minded people. For people

who speak French, there will be occasions to speak French with others and for those who are learning French, it is an opportunity to put your new knowledge to practice in a social context.”

Andrea says long-term she is hoping to organise film nights, meals and other events. There is no obligation to commit to coming each week. At the pizzeria, look for the little French flag on the table.

Reading programme a summer success Tauranga Library’s Summer Reading Programme helped more than 650 children and teenagers keep their noses in books throughout the summer holiday period.

The programme is aimed at keeping children’s reading levels up during the school break and children’s team leader Michelle Anderson says the programme was a great success this year.

“A lot of school kids experience the ‘summer slide’ where they return to school with lower reading levels than when they left.

“It’s a case of ‘use it or lose it’ with reading.

While we want kids to relax and have fun in the summer holidays, we want

part of their fun to be reading.”

Children on the programme received incentive prizes for talking to library staff about the books they read.

Teenagers wrote reviews of their books, receiving free books to keep in return.

More than 800 children and parents celebrating the programme’s end with a picnic.

“The teens and tweens have their own finale parties, with a scavenger hunt and challenges based on book and movie ‘The Hunger Games’. “ The programme is supported by a Pub Charity grant applied for by Friends of Tauranga Library.

Programme ideal option for first-time parents The SPACE programme is aimed mainly at first-time parents and their babies, and has been designed to support parents through the first year of their child’s developmental journey.

a welcoming and settling in time, followed by a time for sharing and discussion about topics that relate to new parents.

Morning tea is provided and there will be opportunities for play, music, rhymes and stories.

Unit 3 of the SPACE programme provides an introduction to early childhood areas of play and an orientation to early childhood care and education services. Parents are provided with information on various discussion topics and areas of play to develop an understanding of early childhood settings and The Early Childhood Curriculum.

The SPACE NZ Trust is a not-for-profit organization registered with the Charities Commission. The SPACE NZ Trust works in partnership with a range of organisations across NZ to deliver the SPACE programme to parents and their babies. Facilitating this course will be Claire Topping, manager of the Village Childcare and Sarah Cox Dip. Tch. ECE. Claire holds a B. Tch. Ln. ECE and has trained extensively overseas at The Pikler Institute in Hungary, at RIE (Resources for Infant Educators) in the United States and at Reggio Emilia in Italy and is a specialist in the area of infants and toddlers.

Village VOICE

The programme runs weekly for three to four terms (i.e. 30-40 weeks). The sessions are run by facilitators who have knowledge, experience, and training in early childhood care and education.

Infants join the SPACE programme around 0-3 months of age. There may be opportunities for older babies to join in with an existing SPACE session, depending on the availability of places.

The Bethlehem SPACE sessions will be held at Bethlehem Community Church from 9.30am– 12noon every Tuesday morning during school terms. This venue will be set up to encourage interactions between the parents, babies, and facilitators.

A daring Duke

Duke was three years old when he arrived at Tauranga SPCA, hungry and alone.

The black and tan huntaway cross had been tied to a clothesline for most of his life, left by himself with very little food for three years. His adoption notice read: My dream for the rest of my life is to be a normal dog and be able to do all the things normal dogs do, like running free, being loved, fed and being given lots of attention and pats. I still have a way to go weight wise but I am hoping and praying that you can see the potential in me for our future together.”

How residents can help the SPCA Not every family is able to adopt an SPCA pet, but there are other ways to help out.

Taurnaga SPCA is always looking for families to foster both kittens and puppies.

Manager Margaret Rawiri says fostering is simple and offers families who cannot commit long term a chance to bond with young animals.

Currently, on top of the 70 kittens at the shelter, about 80 kittens are out in foster homes. Kittens stay with families for about four to five weeks. All they need is a spare

room or somewhere quiet for the kittens to stay. “We welcome foster homes, families have been so generous throughout the summer period, but the need is always there.

“It’s always preferable for the animals to be out in homes.”

Puppy fostering involves a lot of socialising with the animal, giving it love and attention, but they are too young for walking.

The SPCA provides the food and all the necessary supplies for the animals so there is no expenses for foster families.

so much, the same people then came in and adopted Scooter, another animal with a tough start to life, and two kittens.

Scooter, a young male cat, came to the SPCA under unfortunate circumstances. A fishing line had caught tightly around one of his legs.

Left too long, it was so tight that it cut the circulation to his leg and it had to be amputated.

“Despite this, he is such a friendly boy who was always going to make an awesome pet and having only three legs will not stop him from having a full, active life,” says Margaret.

Scooter now spends his days laping up sunshine and relaxing in the company of Duke and the kittens – the memories of their darker days exactly that – memories.

“It’s stories like Duke and Scooter’s that make our jobs so amazing,” says Margaret.

“We see a lot of hardship here, but when we get to see animals leave with loving families, it

What to expect when you’re adopting As The Weekend Sun and Tauranga SPCA’s first adopt-a-thon for 2013 takes place, residents are reminded that just as we prepare for the arrival of a new-born baby, preparing to adopt a pet also has its requirements.

Tauranga SPCA manager Margaret Rawiri says while adopting a pet is exciting, there are many things families need to both acquire and consider before they make their choice.

“The reality of owning a pet is often very different. We want people to adopt, but we want them to think about it carefully as well.”

Margaret speaks to The Weekend Sun about what needs to be ticked off when adopting: “They need to make sure everyone in the house is agreeable and likes that animal. A big reality is the likelihood of overseas travel and what are they going to do with their pets when they go away on holiday, as not everyone will allow you to take a pet with you.

“Secondly, they need to think about cost. It’s normally easy enough to feed a cat – most people can afford to do that. But if something goes wrong, or they get sick, there can be unforeseen costs which can be quite expensive.” The above issues go for both dogs and cats, but both species have their own specific requirements also, she says.

Cat needs:

“With cats it’s a matter of making sure they have thought about it, and choosing a cat

which suits their lifestyle. “If a family already has a cat then they need to think about introducing them slowly.

“A lot of people tend to think an older cat won’t accept another cat into the house. That is true for many, so they need to take other animals into consideration.”

Dog needs:

“With puppies, we strongly advise they look into the different breeds.

“A lot of ours are crosses, such as staffy or labrador mixes, but even if people look into the main breed and just see what the characteristics are of that breed, so they have an idea of what they are getting into it.

“An idea of expenses for dogs is important: registration each year needs to be paid, and training. It’s not a short term commitment.

“We require when adopting a dog or a puppy that the whole family comes in to meet the dog. Some dogs just don’t like each other and they’re better to find that out here than later on at home.”

Ticking the boxes Margaret says the SPCA requires homes to be fully fenced, or with a lifestyle property there needs to be somewhere to contain the dog when owners go out.

“With children, it’s really important they are not scared of the animal.

“People need to understand a lot of our puppies, because they are in a caged environment, they become really excited when they see people and they’re just really happy to get out.

“When you have a three year old who gets jumped upon by a puppy, that young child may not want another dog going near them again.”

She says while there are many boxes to tick, the requirements are in place to make sure each animal is adopted into a family where they will be safe and loved for a long time.

“People go into it with a good heart.

“They see the cute puppies and they don’t always realise the full deal.

“But when everything is done right we see many happy endings, which are great.”

Tauranga SPCA is holding a special adopt-a-thon event this weekend, with 20 per cent off adoptions. There will also be spot prizes and giveaways for every family who adopts one of the shelter’s animals. Margaret says while this should not encourage just anyone to adopt, those people who have considered the above requirements and are committed to sharing their home with an animal are warmly invited to take part. The event will run Saturday 10.30am-4pm and Sunday from 10.30am-3pm.

Go for gold A soft drink company, which shall remain nameless, recently ran a photo competition which needed to show someone drinking its product. The brief asked for an extreme and adventurous photo and I felt confident the $5000 gold bar prize would be mine! Tania Lima of Mount Maunganui was a great model and we created this image.

And guess what?? It didn’t win!

Mother going bald for child cancer After witnessing her two brothers battle with cancer, a Tauranga mother is taking drastic action against the disease next month.

Niki Gorman is “shaving her lid for a brave kid” in the hope of raising $1000 in support of the Child Cancer Foundation.

On Saturday, March 2 Niki will be shaving her head at the Mount Main Beach for the Beach Bald event as part of Child Cancer Appeal Month.

After her two young brothers were diagnosed with cancer Niki was quick to show her support because of the major impact cancer has had on her life.

Niki’s youngest brother was born with retina glaucoma and her other brother is battling a brain tumour after his diagnosis more than 10 years ago.

“Probably in the back of my mind that’s always been there, but I’ve been planning on raising some money for child cancer for ages,” says Niki.

With a goal of $1000, the mother of four has so far raised about $500 but says she would have shaved her hair for child cancer any day.

“We set a target of $1000 but you know I’d still do it because it will raise a profile anyway.”

Although she is hoping an eyelash extension will exchange for the loss of her long locks, Niki says shaving her hair is a small sacrifice.

Popular remembrance service returns for 2013 Next week Waipuna Hospice holds its annual service for families and friends of those who died under hospice care in the past year.

People will come together in remembrance on Wednesday, February 20 at 7pm at the hospice grounds.

The service incorporates music, candle lighting, reflective readings and singing, and includes the blessing of messages placed on the 2012 Waipuna Hospice Christmas Trees.

This year John Darke is singing and artist Jeannie Reese will share her story of finding new life after the death of a loved one.

Following the release of memorial balloons, everyone is invited to stay on for supper and a catch-up with hospice staff. December’s Christmas Tree appeal raised more than $15,000 for the on-going work of the hospice in supporting individuals diagnosed with a lifelimiting illness and their families.

Growing top knowledge of no-dig gardening Taking shelter from the sun during the hottest hours of the day, Noel Peterson comes out in the evening to potter in the sustainable garden at the Historic Village.

The no-dig, teaching garden is being created under the wing of Envirohub Bay of Plenty with the aim of teaching residents the benefits of sustainable gardens.

Garden co-ordinator Noel is assembling the garden each evening from 5pm and is appealing for volunteers to help him, and learn about the sustainable feature.

This garden is a sequel to one featured at Envirohub BOP and Noel hopes the trend will take off region-wide.

“I’ve volunteered my time to get the garden off the ground. I don’t mind if people come along just to find out a bit about the garden; it’s been designed as a teaching garden rather than a community garden.”

A no-dig garden works by using grass clippings to cover the ground and create mulch for the plants to grow in, rather than digging the ground up.

“You’re putting the green waste directly back into the ground, rather than putting it in compost bins. It reduces the amount of carbon dioxide and methane going into the atmosphere.

“You can scale it to whatever size you want, it’s easy enough. It’s actually less back-breaking than digging.”

Despite the ease on one’s back, Noel needs help to complete the garden and hopes volunteers will aide him.

“A lot of it is lugging grass clippings around, cutting things back. While it’s quite dry, there is not a lot of planting going on, but there will be planting.

“That’s where the volunteers come in. I have one regular volunteer and some young chaps doing community service.”

Brothers watching giant pumpkin grow Not many youngsters get so excited about vegetables they race out to watch one growing in the garden – but then again, the pumpkin in Ryan and William’s family garden is something special – it’s a giant.

Since October the brothers, aged six and three, and their parents have been caring for the plant they hope may produce a pumpkin big enough to take the title of the Bay’s Biggest Pumpkin at the Bethlehem Town Centre Vintage Fair.

“We planted the seeds in October, after putting lots of horse poo in the hole, but later we went on holiday for 10 days and thought

Families cycle together during Bike Month Bike month continues next week with a series of events for the whole family.

Sport BOP recreation advisor Nicki Scott says nothing beats cycling as an activity for all ages and Play in the Bay’s Bike Month will offer activities for all members of the household next week.

“We have a great programme with something for everyone, from little kids up – including Tykes on Trikes events both in Katikati and Tauranga.”

Tykes on Trikes offers preschoolers a chance to race around a track over a series of fun obstacles in Moore Park on Tuesday at 10am and Memorial Park on Thursday at 10am, with prizes on offer for the best decorated bikes at both events.

Bay of Plenty footballers’ striking success Bay of Plenty’s latest group of footballers have headed their way to international exposure after gaining selection for the Adidas International Touring program squads later this year.

Daniel Marsden, 10, Taelor Parker, 14, Halle Smith, 16, Helen Talbot, 17 and Mianna Laing, 17, Edan Housham, 11, and Zachery Bell, 11, have all been selected in the Anzac squads to travel worldwide following a four day international Coerver Coaching football camp in Canberra, Australia.

The three boys will head to Japan in July and the four girls to the United Kingdom in September to gain an insight into the professional side of football, including matches against other academy sides, nutrition, recovery and sleeping-patterns.

Coerver Coaching New Zealand technical director Phillip Pickering-Parker says the athletes were put through their paces at the recent camp, along with 450 other athletes.

This is a great achievement for both the athletes and the region, says Phillip.

“It is the reward of the students’ commitment, sacrifice and parental support in their pursuit of their football dreams.

“I have watched and coached all these students for over two years in some cases and their determination never ceases to amaze me. If they keep up the attitude we see at training they can compete at an international level.”

He makes particular mention of Zachery and Edan who have made great strides in their footballing development.

“Considering these kids were not even on the regional programme.

On the camp in Canberra, they just worked really hard and ripped up.

“It has been a bit of a spike for the two of them.”

Phillip believes some of the best footballing talent comes from the outer regions in New Zealand and it is great to have so many selected against the larger footballing talent pool in Australia.

Organisers Trudi Peet and Rochelle Free have recently joined forces to create a new company -Freestyle Events and Marketing Limited.

They are also the new owners of the Tauranga Wedding & Special Events Show.

With more than 20 years in the wedding industry, they understand how to make people’s special day a stress-free one.

The Tauranga-based company also offers conference organisation, wedding and event planning, theming, event styling and equipment hire.

Trudi and Rochelle have also taken over the publication ‘The Wedding Planner’ and the ‘wedding planner online’ website, giving helpful tips to couples planning their special day.

Lucky ladies were the recipients of some musical love songs on Valentine’s Day as Tauranga’s own Harmony A Plenty Barbershop Chorus.

Three quartets from Harmony A Plenty were available to sing a song or two to a nominated loved one yesterday.

Barbershop music, with its

close, unaccompanied four-part harmonies and ringing chords, is a unique American folk art of song.

Harmony A Plenty have been sharing the love on Valentine’s Day with love birds in Tauranga for many years.

“We do it to brighten somebody’s day.

delighted,” says chorus member Bill Butterfield. Last Valentine’s Day the chorus went to sing to Bill’s daughter who was working at Mount Maunganui College – before being asked to sing in front of an audience of 23 women.

Wonder Walker’s ‘Active Living’ seminars are designed to provide information and education on the key things to consider in keeping ourselves and our families in good health. “The feedback that we have received from the two previous seminars that we have held has been fantastic,” says Wendy.

“We have found women very keen to learn more about the simple but effective changes that we can make to achieve good outcomes.”

Pre-school raises $2300 for young mother of two A Tauranga pre-school is donating $2300 to mother Rhozie Edmonds, who is fundraising to have a brain tumour removed.

The 26-year-old, who has two children Madison, 6, and Mack, 3, was diagnosed with a pineal cyst in the pineal gland at the centre of the brain in March.

Doctors in New Zealand won’t operate in her, so she has enlisted the help of Australian surgeon Dr Charlie Teo. She has her first consultation with him in March and if she is given the green light, she will need $90,000 to pay for the surgery.

Cooling things down with dessert The walk up the Mount the other day was amazing.

Luckily it was early, because as the morning went on the temperature rose dramatically.

And working in the garden afterwards picking more corn became hot, sweaty and thirsty work.

Luckily the chicken fence supports a bit of shade, with the biggest pumpkin I have ever grown (possibly inspiring another column) hanging from its supports.

Usually this is the time a cold beer or three would go down well, but today the fridge contained only one, so I drank that.

I remember passing a shaved ice vendor on marine parade at the Mount, which gave me an instant recall of Penang street hawkers selling a shaved ice drink called Ais Kacang, made with red beans, jelly, palm sugar syrup, evaporated

milk, sweetcorn,and shaved ice.

The ice was kept in big blocks shaved in an old cast iron mangletype contraption.

All the ingredients were placed inside a plastic bag with straw and taped in such a way that you could drink it.

I remember my wife refusing to try it as it had such unusual ingredients.

To her corn was for fritters and savoury items, not for a sweet.

Such a pity, because to this day the flavour of this drink on that hot sweaty day, having just circumnavigated Penang on a scooter, was the most amazing drink I’ve ever had in my life!

So this week the recipe is a toned down version, no red beans and a standard raspberry jelly instead of seaweed set (agar) but still containing corn and the plum of the moment, Luisa.

Crushed Summer Ice Dessert Makes enough for six bowls or glasses

Ingredients 3 discs (165g) light palm sugar 1 piece (195g) dark palm/coconut sugar 2 knotted pandam leaves (with four leaves in each) 6-8 ripe Luisa plums 3 C smashed ice, pulverised to a fine snow 3 corn cobs, boiled and stripped from cob 1 packet raspberry jelly, made up according to instructions 1 tin evaporated milk Method Source pandam leaves and palm sugar from an Asian supermarket.

It will cost you around $6-7.

Slowly melt the two palm sugars in separate pots on a low heat with the pandam leaves and ¼ cup of water in each pot until they turn into syrup. Cut the flesh from the plums and add 1/4 of the light palm syrup to them, purée and then strain. Add the rest of the syrup to the corn kernels and chill down both for an hour.

Assemble the dessert by placing the corn, dark palm syrup, red jelly and plum purée on top of crushed ice and pouring on evaporated milk until the whole thing floats. The dessert can be drunk with a straw as the ice melts and eaten with a spoon to finish off. An interesting way to have corn and plums together and a refreshing way to cool you down.

It’s a good time to take it easy in the kitchen, or better yet have lots of barbecues, as most men love to take over the cooking then. All we women have to do is make the salads.

I love kumara and mixing all the colours I can find. I made this salad in no time and just kept adding whatever I had spare in the fridge.

Lupi Light Olive Oil to drizzle 5 mixed coloured kumara, chopped into chunks 2 oranges, chopped into chunks 1 large avocado, chopped 3 slices of bacon (optional) 1 can chickpeas, washed and drained 2 tbsp mayonnaise Juice of one orange Fresh coriander

and bake until golden. Once cooked, place the bacon over the top and place back in the oven for

further five minutes. Remove from oven, stir and mix through the rest of the ingredients. It’s that easy!

Western Bay of Plenty council debt scarier than TCC’s It was with interest that I read the letter from R. McGuinness headed “Debt Scares Pants Off ” in which he highlighted the number of people in the TCC area and how much their council owes. It equates to $3,680 per person.

However, he does not mention the Western Bay of Plenty with approx.

40,000 population and Council debt in the order of $170 million. This equates to $4,250. How on earth can Council finances get back to manageable proportions?

Western Bay Council had little or no debt in the 1990’s when some bright spark in Central Government came up with the bright idea to retire septic tanks adjacent to water – sea, river, lake etc. They produced data to back up the directive to councils.

The majority of councils accepted what government required and went ahead with the work. The

majority of those councils are now heavily in debt and ratepayers are now paying approximately two and a half times the rates.

There are no published figures showing how much better the water quality is in our inner harbour because it is farm run-off into our streams and rivers that pollutes it. One council took the step to engage independent consultants who reported that only 10% of pollution was caused by septic tanks but 90%

by farm runoff.

Western Bay Council, and there are many others, have spent all this money and achieved no discernible improvement to the quality of water in the inner harbour. I have tried to obtain before and after figures, both from Western Bay and the Regional Council but despite being assured that the data would be sent, have received nothing!

Support for GMO containment concerns I applaud Dr Ian McLean’s Green Scene column in The Weekend Sun last week (February 8) on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). He accurately points out the impossibility of containing GMOs once they are released into our environment and the considerable liability risks of such release.

Given the considerable uncertainty and risks of GE technology, last week’s report of the Northland & Auckland Intercouncil Working Party produced valuable advice to all councils: not only do they have jurisdiction over such activities but councils were urged to prudently protect themselves with precautionary policy against liability. They also have a duty to protect farmers, their local economies and ecosystems from the considerable risks of GMO release.

Until the giant biotech companies promoting and profiting from GE accept liability for potentially expensive catastrophes from GMO release into the environment then it is entirely appropriate for territorial councils to formulate sensible protective policies if not ban GMO release entirely.

A recipe for a takeover? Share your views, make a difference Recently I received a Constitutional Advisory Panel document entitled, New Zealand’s Constitution: the conversation so far.

As is usual with these communications, by the time one had finished trying to absorb it; you have a very clear view of why the majority very swiftly give up.

However two things stood out very clearly. The word Aotearoa came before New Zealand, and secondly this is a deal between National and the Maori party, and until now, most of the dealing has been behind closed doors. While clubs like Probus, Rotary, Grey Power and others may try to dismiss discussion of it as being political; this is narrow thinking on their part and extremely dangerous nonsense for their supporters.

Constitutional matters must involve the whole country and everyone in it, regardless of their political views, colour, religious beliefs, age, sexual preferences, and anything else anybody wants to dream up.

So far, the young couldn’t care less, the middle class is stretched just trying to keep up, the beneficiaries are happy as long as their payments keep coming and the aged seem more concerned about their grandkids.

All in all, it’s a great recipe for a total takeover and the powerful and greedy politicians (and their scheming cohorts) must be rubbing their hands together in gleeful anticipation of just that.

With reference to D. Holm’s letter last week ‘A letter to Simon’, I doubt D. Holm will get any response.

I’ve written to several MPs (including Simon Bridges)... and I’ve never had any sort of satisfactory answers... I received a response from the Ministry of Justice and the Constitutional Advisory Panel.

The Advisory Panel, headed by Sir Tipene O’Regan, said this: ‘There is a Booklet available on our website www.capt.govt.nz ‘. The panel is currently ‘preparing resources to support people to take part in conversations regarding the Constitution’.

This booklet will be available in February 2013.

I have to say I was wondering where the bulk of $6Million in taxpayers’ money was going. Mind you I bet the members of the Advisory Panel (12 in number), are being well paid.

They also said ‘they regard this as a great opportunity for people to share their aspirations for this country and what matters to them most about how Aotearoa New Zealand is run in the future’. I note that Aotearoa has crept in and will most likely become New Zealand’s 1st name. I bet a new flag will be next.

Save ratepayers’ money: get rid of city council CEO The Chief Executive Officer for TCC is absolutely unnecessary (one person’s opinions) and will be an exorbitant cost over and above the already debt of hundreds of millions of dollars which cannot be sustained indefinitely.

Also the over abundant staff should

be reduced; too many receiving fat salaries. Surely there are enough VIPs in council to run our city’s finance etc, those successful business folk, with the Mayor as CEO. If he has not got the business acumen, then replace him.

we have mostly imported negative social attitudes, such as, greed, selfishness and dishonesty. These are now built in and are the major cause of the breakdown of society. Tsunami scaremongering Wednesday 6 February 2013. Once again! We are presented with the Tsunami threat through the media; eventually, four hours after the quake, via TV3 News.

If this had been a real threat it would have been far too late. This is utter scaremongering, and my real concern is that after ‘Crying Wolf ’ so many times, most people will probably take little notice when receiving advice of what may be an actual emergency threat.

Also, the procrastination of our City Council relating to the choice of type of warning sirens to alert the public to a tsunami threat amounts to another non-reaction to what we have been told on many occasions is a real threat to our safety. The whole situation regarding tsunami alerts beggars belief.

Marchwood Blues fest ‘wonderful’ ‘Oh what a night’. No, this wasn’t ‘December 1963’ but February 2013, at the Marchwood Blues Picnic in Whakamarama. The event was well organised and hosted by Peter Archer who made everyone welcome and played mouthorgan alongside other musicians.

The event went on with a host of wonderfully talented people that made the countryside come alive and feet tapping. The afternoon opened with No License, followed by that great guitarist Mike Garner, Black Velvet with Tara Watson, Gun Shy, Kokomo and guitarist Anton Tipi Elkington, who had the crowd shouting for more.

It was a wonderful day out and with great respect to all the musicians, for me it was ‘Beasley Street’, who brought back memories of the 80s. They came on stage and lifted the crowd to their feet to dance.

Let’s hope that they’ll be tempted back to perform as a team again.

Court Briefs Delay in ‘king hit’ sentencing

The sentencing of a Te Puna rugby player who admitted to making a “king hit” on Bay of Plenty Steamers player Simon Chisholm has been adjourned. Uenuku Pieta was originally due to be sentenced in Tauranga District Court on December 20 but had sentencing adjourned.

Sentencing scheduled for Wednesday was further postponed until March 19 as Judge Louis Bidois was unavailable for sentencing.

In July last year 22-year-old Simon Chisholm was knocked unconscious during a premier grade rugby match between Te Puna and Te Puke.

Simon spent two days in Tauranga Hospital with bruising on his brain following the assault.

In October last year Pieta pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with intent to injure.

Farmer jailed for cow cruelty

A Bay of Plenty farmer convicted for the wilful ill-treatment of dairy cows, including breaking 115 cows’ tails, has had his sentence upgraded from home detention to jail.

Waikino farmer Lourens Barend Erasmus, 40, was sentenced to two years, one month jail.

He was originally sentenced to 10 months’ home detention with judicial monitoring when he appeared before the Waihi District Court last year.

The Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) appealed against the sentence and Erasmus was sentenced to prison when he appeared in the Rotorua High Court earlier this week. He earlier pleaded guilty to three charges of wilfully ill-treating cows.

In February 2012, an MPI Animal Welfare compliance team entered the property farmed by Erasmus for the purpose of inspecting the dairy herd.

Arson and kidnapping accused

Two Tauranga men accused of kidnapping and arson following a daylight carjacking in Tauranga in August last year are due to appear in court on April 15. Daytona Byron Witeri Ranui and Tane Ringatu Richard Hill-Ormsby are facing aggravated robbery, kidnapping and arson charges.

The charges relate to an incident on August 14, where Ranui and his alleged co-offender HillOrmsby allegedly stole a car from a Tauranga resident. Police investigating the incident say a Hyundai Getz was stolen from its owner while he was driving it and was later found burnt out on a Te Puna beach.

Recover from one event - onto the next Things are busy in the Bay - there barely seems enough time to recover from one event before the next is upon us.

Fortunately, so far, all the outdoor bashes have been blessed with good weather and have been, from what I’ve seen, great successes. Summerfest a couple of weekends back went off in fine style and last weekend’s Marchwood Blues Picnic was a blast.

And, once again, this weekend is host to a pile of musical happenings all over the place.

The Summer Vineyard Tour is at Mills Reef today – Friday that is, assuming you rushed straight to your letterbox and opened The Weekend Sun as soon as you poured that first Martini of the evening – with Opshop, Missy Higgins, and Che Fu and Aaradhna all playing. They’re promising solo sets (all the hits!) as well as a combined “soul” set. The field next to the winery is a great place for a concert as crowds who were at the Stars Under the Stars concert over Auckland Anniversary Weekend can attest. At that show, however, it was look-a-likes performing (or should that be sound-a-likes?): this time it’ll be the real thing. The concert runs from 4.00 till 10.00pm and tickets cost $75.

And, talking of Mills Reef, there’s a singer there the following Sunday (February 23) whose been doing very well overseas. Sarah Frances Johnson debuted in showbiz as an eleven-year-old on Shortland Street but has spent the last couple of years singing at various hi-falutin’ bars and hotels in Las Vegas.

I’ve seen a profile of her in Next magazine (no I don’t have a regular subscription) and know that the standard to get gigs over there is astonishingly high so, although I’ve never actually heard her, I assume Sarah is a fantastic singer. She is certainly – and I say this in a totally non-sexist and certainly not drooling

manner – absolutely gorgeous. I don’t think there’s any special ticket charge but you’ll need to book a table and have lunch. She starts at 12.30pm.

But, back to this weekend...

If you’re thinking of going for a drive on Saturday (February 16) you could head in two directions and find music festivals.

For those already missing Marchwood there’s another shot of blues (aptly calling itself Summertime Blues) at the Hamilton Rose Gardens. Kicking off at 11.00am this features Jason Herbert, Pauline and A Few Good Men, Al Dawson and the Wildkatz, The Darcy Perry Blues Band, The Blue Jaffas, and a fun ensemble calling themselves The Rabbit Foot Old Time Blues Show.

The latter is a combination of Rotorua bluesman Mike Garner and Hot Club Sandwich frontman Andrew London.

Conversely, if you take the coast road and head south you’ll run into the Maketu Kaimoana Festival, which runs from midday till 6.00pm. There, amongst the seafood, you’ll find six acts from the Bay of Plenty: Captain Who! From Paengaroa, Kawerau’s Harley Kruz, Raymond Solomon from Little Waihi, Sunrise Rockers from Rotorua, and Tauranga’s own Kougar Sisters and B-Side Band.

Tickets are $15, which seems very reasonable. I haven’t been to one of these Maketu fests but I imagine the seafood on offer will also be mouthwatering.

Talking about the B-Side Band, they are just about to release a new CD-EP, an original six song set, their first since guitarist Mike Kirk became a regular member of the band. A copy just winged its way to the Watusi Country Club and is, as far as I’m aware, the first local release of 2013.

I’ll bring you a review shortly.

Dir: Luis Prieto - Starring: Matthew Coyle, Bronson Webb, Agyness Deyn, Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, now something of a flavour of the month after Drive, made his name with the Pusher trilogy, three grimy films about lowlifes and drug dealers.

He’s attached to this UK remake as an exec-producer but from the opening – with Guy Ritchie-style character introductions – this is clearly a slicker and more stylised

beast. But the story remains the same: dealer Frank has borrowed money for a big score and struggles to repay the debt after everything goes pear-shaped.

And, while reservations about English remakes of foreign films are usually wellfounded, in the instance there is no cause for concern: the cinematography is stylish – all super-saturated colour and

I have a huge distrust of films that purport to be “based on a true story”.

There is, in the “possession” subset of horror, a particularly long and fatuous history dating back to the (wholly fictitious) Amityville Horror and beyond. Perhaps they should just say “based on a story”. The Possession presents us with divorced parents (Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgewick) and the problems that arise when their daughter buys a wooden box containing an evil spirit. Specifically, as has become popular recently, the Jewish equivalent, a Dibbuk. From there things go downhill: weird behaviour from the kid, insect swarms and eventually a visit from the Jewish exorcist. This struggles to find anything original to say while extras reveal that none of it actually happened (but someone did once buy a spooky wooden box).

Two Little Boys had me excited. A Kiwi comedy! With Flight of the Conchords’ Bret McKenzie!

And that Aussie fella from Hamish and Andy (Hamish to be precise). But, in all honesty, I didn’t really get it. I really admire director Robert Sarkies (Out Of The Blue, about the Aramoana killings, was firstrate) and his writer brother Duncan, but this story of two rather dumb lunks, one of whom (Bret) accidentally runs over a Swedish tourist, didn’t pop my cork. The friend he turns to for help – Deano, played by Hamish – is an idiot, and the film charts their increasingly preposterous situation and the disintegration of their mateship. Perhaps I need to watch it again in a different mood, but I found it dumb and irritating.

sharp angels – and the characters, from gormless sidekick Tony to Serbian gang boss Milo (Zlatko Buric, reprising his role from the original) are well-written and convincing.

The dialogue is sharp and there is palpable excitement and tension as the net closes on harried Frank. It may not have the grungy complexity of the original but it’s a pretty good ride.

Contains violence, drug use and sex scenes I think I missed Outpost Outpost, clearly an oversight on my part since the film promised Nazi zombies. Or was that zombie Nazis? No matter, since Outpost 2: Black Sun is upon us and clearly the threat of an undead thousand year Reich hasn’t yet receded. By the time we catch up with them in part two NATO has been secretly fighting the Nazi menace in Eastern Europe for two weeks but that does little to deter intrepid plucky investigator Helena. She’s hunting the evil scientist in charge while soldiers fight immortal stormtroopers and try to destroy the machine responsible for the reanimations. It’s not much good really but at least it has Nazi zombies. Or is that zombie Nazis?

Thankfully Shelter doesn’t claim to be in any way true. It does, however, also fit into the “possession” genre, this time via a diversion into multiple personalities, as you might expect from the writer of Identity.

Identity Julianne Moore is a shrink tasked with check- ing out Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

He has a whole bunch of personalities and after a bit of faffing around it emerges that they all belong to people who’ve been murdered. This – naturally – dates back to an “ancient evil” and possession is the key. Everyone takes things Very Seriously, just as well given the ultimately risible nature of the story.

Open day chance for children to see play with purpose ABC Tauranga is hosting an open day next weekend to show why the centre is the best place for children to learn.

On Saturday, February 23 parents and children can experience firsthand how children can play with a purpose at ABC Tauranga on Maleme Street.

People who attend can take a guided tour of the centre, look at the wonderful resources available, and talk to the experienced staff.

ABC Tauranga Open Day

However, the working and studying has rendered him too busy and Mark is selling the item on Trade Me. Treasured art: what’s hidden in your attic?

Kiwi circus giveaway Circus Aotearoa – New Zealand’s only Kiwi-owned and operated circus – is showing at Simpson Reserve in Papamoa this month.

The Rotary Club of Tauranga Sunrise is once again on the hunt for high quality art for sale in its Treasured Art auction and exhibition.

The club has raised more than $60,000 from the Treasured Art auction the past three years, with proceeds donated to the Foundation for Youth Development’s Kiwi Can programme. On May 23, pieces of work will go under the hammer, with further pieces on exhibition for sale and a silent auction.

Each piece is put through a selection process to ensure the quality of art is extremely high. The art is sold on a 50/50 commission basis, but some of the art is donated.

In the past, a known artist or collection has been featured, with 2011’s event featuring works by nationallyknown Tauranga artist Arthur Dagley, and 2012 works by Auckland-born Peter Wallers. The invitation-only auction sees pieces sold to enthusiastic bidders at Ingham-Sears Mercedes-Benz showroom.

The auction and exhibition has appealed to people changing or downsizing homes. Knowing the art is contributing to a worthwhile cause is often the point-of-difference for a donation.

The planning committee is seeking high quality work for this year’s event, and Kiwi Can will again be the beneficiary.

After 35 years’ involvement in kapa haka, Matiu still enjoys kapa haka as much as he ever did.

it allows us to celebrate our individual tribal identities in a friendly, competitive way and it’s one of the most positive examples of cultural expression for Maori,” he says.

The Slow Bible Movement Part three of three We’ve been looking at the concept of ‘Slow Bible’ over the last few weeks.

Firstly, rather than attempting to read through the Bible in a year, tackle two to four books of the Bible and read them in conversation with some friends.

Secondly, invite an expert into the conversation. The expert won’t actually be there in the room or cafe, but you can invite someone like N.T. Wright into the conversation by taking on

Another good series is the NIV Application Commentary, like Wright’s For Everyone series, the biblical text is offered and then followed up with explanation and potential application to life. This of course involves a little more reading, hence ‘slow Bible’ rather than Biblein-a-year but will lead to great discussions with your friends.

take a ‘bird’s eye view’ of things. This can be helpful when it comes to the Bible. The Drama of Scripture

by C.G. Bartholomew and M.W. Goheen is a fantastic introduction to the big story of the Bible. It breaks the big story of the bible into six acts with an interlude between acts 3 and 4 and will really help you to understand what the Biblical narrative is all about. Scot McKnight also has a book called The King Jesus Gospel. This book offers a bird’s eye view of the life of Jesus and the significance of Jesus for humanity. A must read.

Fourthly and finally, Christians believe that the Bible is a unique revelation of God to humankind. It’s a book like no other and is understood to be inspired by God (the various authors wrote in their own cultural context and language but they wrote under the inspiration of God); infallible (the Bible is not liable to deceive - when understood and interpreted correctly is trustworthy); and authoritative (the teaching, instruction and big story of the Bible is intended to inform and shape how we live our lives). We believe that even as the authors were inspired

by God to write, God can inspire the readers as they read. This doesn’t mean the Bible says whatever we want it to say, but rather, when we engage in due diligence as readers it is amazing how God will speak into our hearts and lives today.

Make 2013 the year when you engage in some ‘slow’ Bible reading and be inspired as God speaks into your world.
