To all my normal deviates Summer must be here, the girls downtown are in short little dresses, the birds start singing earlier in the mornings and the nights are shorter.

The first signs of daylight seem to glimmer unreasonably early – or perhaps it’s just Yasser Arafat glowing in the dark.

He’s just one of the famous departed who have been making the news recently.

The really big news story that you probably all missed was a grave threat to one of our famous poets.

The jafas want to widen the Albany highway, so more of them can get out of the city in a hurry. (I can understand that. One lane in, and six out, would be my preference.)

Trouble is, the grave of ARD Fairburn lies perilously close to the edge of the cemetery.

Ironically, one of Rex Fairburn’s greatest works is “The Disadvantages of Being Dead”.

Some may not have understood a lot of Rex’s work when he was alive. Now we are starting to really appreciate what he was saying, about the disadvantages of being dead.

Clearly, a major one is that someone may one day want to run over your grave with a highway jammed with jafas in their Audis, swerving randomly with their lattes in one hand and a cellphone in the other.

Some in-depth research by the RR crew into Fairburn’s work uncovered some quite startling pieces of literature by a range of equally oddball authors. Such as “the History of Lesbian Hair”, the cover shot being a manipulated artwork of the Mona Lisa with the classic short-back-and-sides look.

Another piece of literary genius you should know about is: “How to Write a How to Write Book”. It has been listed by

one blogger as among the 30 least educational books ever written.

Dangerously close

Meanwhile, there are some bizarre inconsistencies in the minds of those who want to keep us safe.

In the middle of the North Island, there’s a massive volcano that blows its stack. You are relatively free to drive and walk pretty close.

There have been a few temporary road diversions and the odd brief track closure, but by and large, anyone can wander into potential hellfire and brimstone with very little intervention from authority.

Compare that to Astrolabe Reef and its new abstract sculpture. An

exclusion zone of kilometres, for years.

Yet neither Astrolabe, or the remains of its shipwreck, are posing much of a threat to anyone. Astrolabe is not erupting or likely too. Nor has it killed anyone, unlike the volcanoes.

Sure, maybe exclude public from a few hundred metres of the shipwreck while the salvage progresses, for the benefit of the salvors, but we cannot see any need for the massive area of exclusion zone that still exists.

But what needs putting in perspective is the risk, versus the reaction.

Even the adjacent surf beach at Mount Maunganui is more of a threat to public safety than the reef. People drown at the beach. Other people spend their entire summers trying to save people who are determined to drown there.

The surf beach is arguably more of a life threat than Astrolabe and its hardware, and probably more so than the mountain. More people have died at the beach than the mountain, and certainly a lot more than the reef.

So why are they not insisting the beach be closed?

Seems a large amount of inconsistency in the thinking of officialdom.

New turf Tauranga Hockey Association head Clyde du Toit hopes resurfacing Blake Park’s pitches will attract international games.

Construction is expected to start on the new hockey turf at Blake Park this week, in a project that could see international hockey matches being played at Mount Maunganui next winter.

The project’s support from Tauranga City Council in the Ten Year Plan has seen the Tauranga Hockey Association able to secure the $1.4 million funding.

The existing 20-year-old sand turf and the 10-year-old water turf are to be replaced with international standard water turfs. The new turfs are expected to be ready for play by the end of March 2013, ready for the winter hockey season.

“We have heard that the Men’s and Women’s FIH World Cup in 2014 will be played on the WETT Pro surface, the same type as we

are installing here,” says Clyde.

“Hopefully this will allow Tauranga Hockey to support the Black Sticks Men and Women in their preparation for this important world event.”

The bulk of the funding for the $1.4 million turfs has come from $800,000 in TECT grants, plus $200,000 from Tauranga City Council.

Other organisations and individuals that have supported the association include Western Bay of Plenty District Council, New Zealand Community Trust, The Lion Foundation, Pub Charity, Sport BOP and HOBEC Lawyers.

Businessman on assault charge

A high-profile Tauranga businessman is facing assault charges after being accused of seriously injuring a child.

The man, who has been granted interim name suppression, appeared in Tauranga District Court this week charged with assault on a child.

All details including the man’s name, age and occupation, were suppressed by the registrar.

According to court documents the alleged assault on a 12-year-old took place in Mount Maunganui last month.

The report says the child sustained head and back injuries and was taken to Tauranga Hospital where he spent two days receiving treatment.

The accused offender is yet to enter a plea and has been remanded on bail until his next court appearance on December 21.

Te Puke drug accused on bail

One of eight people arrested during a police cannabis operation in Te Puke earlier this year will be back in court next week.

Justin Ngahina Walters, 29, appeared in the Tauranga District Court this week facing a raft of drug charges including possession of cannabis for supply, cultivating cannabis and participation in an organised criminal group.

Walters was arrested along with Hemiona William Ririnui, 29, Nikki Merekeeti Whare, 27, Tiri Kapene, 29, Noel Eugene Walters, 29, and Morehu Selwyn, 18, during a police operation in May.

Stabbing accused court next year

A 35-year-old man accused of stabbing three people during an altercation in Te Puke in June has had his case further adjourned until next year.

The Te Puke man, who has name suppression, appeared in the Tauranga District Court this week charged with three counts of wounding with intent.

On June 27, police were called to a Boucher Avenue property where they found three men with stab wounds.

Police said at the time one of the men was stabbed in the back while going to aid the first victim.

All three were taken to Tauranga Hospital.

The accused has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance on February 5, 2013.

CAA investigate plane crash

The Civil Aviation Authority is investigating the plane crash that killed a 26-year-old commercial pilot in the Bay of Plenty last weekend.

Samuel Kershaw, also known as Sam, was the sole occupant of a top-dressing plane that crashed in Waikite Valley at approximately 1.20pm on Saturday.

CAA investigators examined the crash site on Sunday. A statement released by the organisation says it is too early to give an opinion on the cause of the accident.

The CAA Safety Investigation Unit has deployed two safety investigators to undertake a comprehensive technical review of the wreckage and crash site.

The investigators will also be interviewing witnesses and those involved in the pre-accident activities.

Man admits to armed robbery

One of three men charged with armed robberies in Waihi and Katikati earlier this year will be sentenced next year after pleading guilty today.

Rastaman Angus Rapatini, 19, appeared in the Tauranga District Court today facing two counts of assault with intent to rob and one charge of unlawfully carrying a firearm.

The charges stem from the armed robberies of the Mobil Service Station in Waihi and the Park Road Dairy in Katikati, which were both robbed within half an hour of each other on the morning of June 18.

Judge Robert Wolff remanded Rapatini in custody for sentencing on January 17.

“Thank you your honour, have a nice day,” Rapatini said as he left the docks.

One of his co-accused, Jeremiah Reti, failed to appear in court this morning. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

No deaths in custody

Budding into season

No deaths in police custody in the Bay of Plenty have been reported in the past 12 months.

Police have made improvements in policies and practices, reflecting in better care of people in police custody, as measured by the incidence of deaths of detainees studied in an independent review.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has released a review of 27 deaths which occurred in police custody.

Bay of Plenty Police communications manager Kim Perks says there have been no deaths of people while in police custody in the region during the past year.

The review covered the 10 years between 2000 and 2010 and was prompted by several deaths of heavily intoxicated detainees.

It was also conducted in light of the authority’s responsibilities under the United Nations Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture.

The authority chair, Judge Sir David Carruthers, says deaths in custody are uncommon and do not necessarily reflect the quality of care generally provided by the police.

“While it is rare in New Zealand for people to die while in police custody, such deaths can be controversial.”

He says while not all deaths in custody are foreseeable or preventable, in some cases the actions or omissions of police staff may be a contributing factor.

“The main purpose of the review was to examine the circumstances of each death and identify any recurring issues or developing trends. While the investigations into some deaths identified procedural omissions or errors, the purpose of the review is not to attribute blame; rather, to learn useful lessons from these cases.”

Gun bill passes third reading A gun bill affecting importation rules of airguns and military-style semi-automatic guns has passed its third reading in Parliament.

The bill clarifies the definition of military-style semiautomatic guns and places controls on the importation of airguns which look like real pistols. A special police permit is now required for importers of such airguns.

Police minister Anne Tolley says the bill ensures public safety while not penalising legitimate firearms users.

“Airguns that look like real pistols, MSSAs or restricted weapons are often used by criminals, and are easily mistaken for real weapons.

“Police advise that there is at least one incident every week where one of these airguns is presented, requiring an armed police response. This creates risks for officers and the public, and is also a drain on police resources.”

Small courts around the country are facing closure and will only be used for hearings. Those who require court paperwork will have to travel to larger cities.

John says he empathises with groups opposing the proposals, having had the same treatment in his own district.

Opotiki District Court was reduced to only six hearing days per month, with the court’s paperwork transferred to Whakatane District Court, meaning counter services were no longer provided from the site.

“Rural communities need access to certain service providers; policemen, teachers, GPs, and banks, post offices and courts.

These all make up the fabric of a rural community. As soon as you start picking off these services, one-by-one, that fabric begins to fray.”

He says there’s an argument from the ministers that ‘it’s not about cutting services, but about changing the way we access them’.

“It’s all good and well to tell someone to go online and fill out a form, but districts like Opotiki and Kaipara faces challenges that make this impossible for many of our people.”

Tagged station unwelcoming Papamoa residents are worried the abandoned petrol station where two French tourists were robbed and allegedly beaten is the wrong welcome sign into the town.

Papamoa Progressive Association chairman Steve Morris says the old Shell service station on State Highway 2 near Welcome Bay Road in Papamoa is an eyesore.

“That’s their ‘welcome to Papamoa’ sign. The main thing is it’s just not an acceptable entrance to our town.

“From a safety point of view as well it’s not good having a derelict building. There’s been a history of dodgy stuff going on up there.

Even when the petrol station was open it was regularly burglarised.

“You can just visually see from the graffiti that it’s certainly not wholesome behaviour that goes on up there.”

Steve wrote to Z Energy on its Facebook page and within the last week his post has received more than 700 likes and about 80 comments questioning the future of the abandoned petrol station.

Z Energy senior communications advisor Sheena Thomas says the company does not own the land or building and therefore does not have the right to demolish it.

“Depending on how much longer this drags on for, we are certainly not going to leave it like that.”

The landlord has given Z Energy permission to have the abandoned building painted by a Tauranga artist.

Sheena says she has been in contact with artist Owen Dippie.

On Saturday July 7 two 21-year-old French tourists were hitchhiking from Tauranga to Rotorua when they were picked up by two men in a vehicle.

The pair was driven to the abandoned petrol station where they were allegedly beaten and robbed of their packs, clothing, passports, cash and cards.

Skating ahead in Moore Park Forget about stereotypes and stories of the latest generation of “lazy young people” – one Katikati College student is proving his age group is just as capable as the rest.

Frustrated by the poor state of Katikati’s skate bowl in Moore Park, keen skater Jared Tinetti didn’t just sit there and complain about it.

Two years ago, he began a

campaign to have it upgraded and now the 16-year-old is celebrating after a $50,000 Lotteries grant has paved the way for work to begin around April 2013.

“It’s awesome, it’s great news after being turned down by others.”

Jared and his friends in the skateboarding club he formed last year are still looking at design options, but he says it will have street features such as ledges, hand rails and stair steps, as well as having ‘vert’ with half pipes to make it more challenging and interesting.

During weekends or afterschool, Jared says there is often a queue of 20 skaters waiting to use the current “worn out and outdated” skate bowl, because the design and size means one person can use it at a time.

After starting the revamp petition, Jared formed a skateboarding club

they and began fundraising with raffles, sausage sizzles, garage sales and events to raise the estimated $100,000 needed.

The project got a boost from the Western Bay of Plenty Council in November last year when they pledged to match the group’s efforts if they raised $50,000.

Jared says fundraising has also been boosted by donations of $5000 from the Katikati Community Board and $1000 from the Lions club.

He says with a budget of $108,200 available for the project, with the new grant from the Lottery Community Facilities Fund, the new skate park beside the Moore Park bowl will definitely be completed by next summer.

Police readying for summer season New technology is expected to make the additional summer police presence even more visible in the community.

All officers on duty will be carrying iPads or iPhones this year in a move that will cut the time required off-patrol for processing paperwork, allowing them to spend more time on the street.

BOP area commander Clifford Paxton and Mount Maunganui senior sergeant Joel Lamb briefed city councillors this week on their plans for the holiday period.

In addition to the generally higher profile, there will be more police on duty. While the summer programme began on November 26 with the increased use of the booze bus, December 17 is the date when the numbers

ramp up for the peak summer period.

This is also the date the tactical group tasked with focussing on disorder begins operation, and on the same day six extra groups come into town.

Police wouldn’t say how many additional police will be involved in each of the additional tactical groups, but they will be here until January 13.

The Mount Maunganui Processing Centre, formerly known as Alcatraz, is only going to be operating for three days this year because of declining demand. In the past Alcatraz was a big feature of many a reveller’s New Year celebrations.

Joel says Mount Maunganui arrests have dropped steadily during the last three years,

from 278 in 2009 to 213 in 2010, and 110 last year.

Last summer’s record low is blamed on bad weather that forced several event cancellations.

Police are happy with the developing family atmosphere being nurtured at the Mount Maunganui New Year venue.

“It’s been highly successful over the last few years and it comes from the hard work put in with the council and the community,” says Joel.

The Exodus music event in Eastern Papamoa is also well run, with good security.

Police made only a few arrests there last year, mainly of people who had been evicted and were attempting to climb back in over fences.

Lighting the festive spirit Delay on freedom camping decision Santa’s helper John Shakespeare is part of the attraction under Plover Place’s twinkling Christmas lights every festive season.

Every September John Shakespeare puts his razor away. It is a routine he has been doing for about eight years to prepare for his job as Santa’s helper on Plover Place.

John, like most of his neighbours in the Maungatapu cul de sac, has been decorating his property in Christmas lights to mark the festive season ever since the tight-knit street decided to follow the example of Alan Holloway, who began the tradition 10 years ago by decorating a tree by his driveway.

“It was pretty modest, just two or three strands of Christmas lights.”

The following year many others in the cul de sac followed, decorating their homes and gardens in the spirit of Christmas and other neighbours who had been hesitant about putting up lights were soon joining in, says Alan.

“We are not doing it to win any light trail competition or anything like that, it’s just about celebrating Christmas.”

After it had become a popular attraction with visiting families Alan, an active volunteer with Waipuna Hospice, struck upon the idea of collecting donations for the charity. He estimates they have raised about $16,000 for the hospice since.

Far from taking credit for Plover Place’s success, Alan pays tribute to everyone involved who makes it an annual highlight, including his neigh-

bour John who greets children in his job as Santa’s helper, as well as visiting kindergartens.

The first year he joined in John got right into the spirit by greeting visitors in a Santa suit, but discomfort with the fake beard prompted him to grow his own the following year.

“I’ve got white hair and I’m a bit older so I was ideal, but when it came to growing beard, the moustache area was a bit darker so I have to lighten it with poster paint.”

Every night he sets himself up outside on a wicker chair with twinkling lights, talking to children, hearing what they want, having photos taken and giving out lollies. It costs him more than $120 each year for the sweets and extra power, without considering the decorations, but he loves every minute of it.

“I really enjoy it sitting out there and talking with the children. It’s great. It’s a smashing cul de sac – we all have a lot of fun doing this.”

The lights are on 8.30-11.30pm every night until Christmas Eve. When the lights go out on Christmas Eve John’s wife is always waiting with the razor to shave off the beard. By Hamish Carter

Changes to Tauranga City Council’s freedom camping rules are on hold until next year, after councillors ran out of time this week.

Strategy and policy committee chairman deputy mayor David Stewart says the issue will be discussed at the next meeting, in January.

The city’s proposed freedom camping policy limiting freedom camping to five reserves on the Tauranga side of the city was attacked during the submissions process by mobile homeowners.

They say the city’s approach discourages the thousands of New Zealand mobile home owners from visiting Tauranga, depriving city businesses of considerable income.

After hearing the submissions the council called for a staff report, which was contained in this week’s committee agenda, but the accompanying legal advice remains in confidential.

The legal issue facing the council is, if it restricts freedom camping to five named reserves, it can only issue tickets on those reserves. Any freedom campers elsewhere in the city cannot be ticketed.

The council’s approach also appears contrary to the Freedom Camping Act, which states camping can be prohibited or restricted if it is necessary to: protect the area; to protect the health and safety of people who visit the area; to protect access to the area.

In the city’s draft Street Use and Public Places Bylaw 2012, there is a blanket ban on freedom camping in all parks and reserves apart from: Memorial Park; Greerton Park; Fergusson Park; Manne Park; and Waikareao Foreshore Reserve.

Until it’s resolved, the council is relying on a bylaw banning a vehicle for living accommodation on any portion of any public place, except where campervans and motor homes are permitted.

Mat time for Marshall The 21 kilograms Marshall Gibson has shed since he started wrestling a few years ago is more than compensated by his monster haul of 11 gold medals at national and international competitions this year.

Marshall, part of Bay of Plenty Polytechnic’s high performance sports academy where he’s a year into his electrical engineering studies, grabbed four out of a possible six golds at the national wrestling and grappling championships in Hamilton, with silver and bronze in the two divisions he didn’t win.

But it’s his performance in the United States, where

he toured with the New Zealand junior team, that turned heads. Here Marshall backed up silver in the Yorktown freestyle tournament, which attracted 500 top state wrestlers, with gold and two silvers in the Jeffersonville Iron Man tournament.

The 19-year-old, who got his start in wrestling when he used it as a training aid in the rugby off-season at Tauranga Boys’ College, rates his effort in the States, where wrestling is a big deal, as his best result of a breakthrough year. He was also a finalist in Bay of Plenty junior sportsman of the year and recent recipient of a BayTrust sports scholarship.

“It’s been a pretty good year all in all, but that meet in Jeffersonville was the big highlight. They eat, sleep and breathe wrestling in the US but I just felt in the groove that weekend and kept winning.”

Marshall took out national titles in the junior 120kg freestyle and Greco-Roman and senior 120kg and 120kg+ Greco – where one of his opponents weighed in at 137kg – with silver and bronze in junior grappling and senior freestyle.

His total count for 2012 tops a staggering 20 medals and now Marshall is targeting March’s Oceania championships in Guam, where he’ll arrive a lot leaner and meaner than when he first took up the sport as a 17-year-old.

He tipped the scales at 124kg back then but the 1.93m-tall grappler shed a remarkable 21kg through a combination of good nutrition and hard graft, working with coach Mark Grayling at their Mount Maunganui club. He cut to 103kg but is slowly managing his weight back up

“I’m eating right and doing lots of exercise. I’ve always been a big boy but I feel a lot more agile and supple and should be better for it on the mat at 113 or 114kg.”

Guam will be Marshall’s last Oceania competition as a junior, although he’ll jump up a grade into the senior weight divisions as well. Two golds in the junior ranks in freestyle and Greco is his goal, with the junior world championships in Bulgaria next year also on the horizon. He needs to top the dais in Guam to qualify.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow is the big prize, but that will be reliant on a decent showing in Bulgaria and at the Commonwealth Championships, also in Scotland.

Marshall trains every afternoon during the week, doing a mixture of weights, cardio and wrestling at his local club, spending 12 hours a week in the gym.

“Wrestling is different to any other sports and you need a special kind of fitness which I only get from actually doing wrestling,” Marshall adds.

The forecast for next week is for a consistent breeze of 15 knots, with some lighter winds and emerging windsurfing talent on the horizon.

At least that is the hope of Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club, which is hosting a week of windsurfing with the two-day North Island Board Champs followed by a series of clinics and courses.

Club manager Christine Headey has seen personally the benefits of windsurfing and the opportunity it can offer young racers only after a short stint and wants to see more young people try their hand at the sport during Wind Week, which runs from December 15-21.

In less than a year Christine has watched her 14-year-old daughter Coral go from a beginner to the New Caledonia champion at the major Pacific region competition

last month, with her focus firmly set on competing at the world championships in Poland next year.

It is the third year the club has held the North Island Board Champs at Sulphur Point and Christine wants to see the regular top level events continue to be hosted here to help foster the sport in the region.

“Boarding is increasing in popularity around the world, but that hasn’t been happening as much as we would like to see here in New Zealand, but we hoping this will get more people involved.”

The two-day North Island champs this weekend are expected to attract at least 30 top sailors competing in the Techno (juniors), RS:X (youth and Olympic), Formula and Kite categories. The top racing event will be followed by a three-day clinic by Olympic gold medallist and windsurfing star Bruce Kendall. The club is also holding a week-long introductory learn to windsurf course.

include Alex Hart, who earlier this year competed at the world championships in the Techno division, but is now competing in the RS:X class, along with Coral Headey – who hopes to follow in Alex’s footsteps to compete at the worlds next year.

After completing an introductory course last summer holidays, Coral says she quickly got the bug for windsurfing and says she has been inspired by the success of Alex, who often trains with her, and is encouraging others to take up the sport.

“It’s just amazing. If you put in the training you can get head quite quickly, and you don’t have to be a certain body type – it suits anyone,” says Coral, who credits the sport in helping her lose a lot of weight.

Coral is already making waves after winning her age group at the New Caledonia Techno Nationals last month.

Tracing Tauranga’s history Visitors to Tauranga will soon be able to discover the city’s hidden historic gems thanks to a series of signs pointing the way around the heritage walk in the CBD. The project, organised and funded by the Tauranga Rotary Club, should be completed by Christmas with 30 signs in brown (the international tourism colour) tracing the 3km heritage walk from the i-Site in Willow Street.

The heritage walk was established three years ago and has been only promoted with brochures until now.

Rotary project coordinator Neil Goodwin says the signs complement the club’s development of a website, www.taurangaheritagewalk.co.nz, which details the walk and highlights along the way.

“With people able to follow the walk using the latest technology on their smart devices or by just following the good old-fashioned signs, we are hoping it will get a lot more people to discover the walk.”

Neil says the club wanted to signpost the walk both to promote it and help people follow the route, which includes 18 points of interest – from the old Post Office, the old Bond Store at No 1 The Strand,

along past Monmouth Redoubt to the Elms Mission House, before returning back along Dive Crescent.

“When people come off the cruise ships and come into town they are often wondering what there is to do of interest, so this will help point them in the

A’hoy me hearties, regatta The call is out for as many ragged pirate crews to register for the annual Rotary regatta fundraiser in March, 2013.

Tauranga Te Papa Rotary Club regatta organiser Alan Hitchcock says the Harbour Classic event, which will mark its 15th year of racing on Tauranga Harbour, will have a pirate theme next year with crews encouraged to dress up.

Alan says the event attracts up to 220 people each year and raises thousands of dollars for Western Bay charities, with previous recipients including Waipuna Hospice and Amped4life as

well as many Rotary-funded youth activities.

He wants to hear from anyone interested in taking part, saying it can be a great way for business to host valued clients or recognise staff. Each boat, which is supplied by Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club, comes with a skipper and deckhand so others do not need sailing experience.

Biting the hand that feeds Ooops. It was an honest mistake. After a huge run around the reserve and a mega swim in the estuary then a cooling dip in the fish pond, it was time to wash the pond slime off with a good old hosing down.

I love a good hosing down. I’ve even learnt to turn around so the boss can wash the nether regions.

Then we have a great fun time, biting the water coming out of the hose. Trouble is, sometimes the line between the end of the hose, and the appendages of the person holding it, can get a little blurred.

This day was one of those days. One quick chomp, on what looked like water, turned out to be the hand that feeds.

The boss said some pretty choice words and I knew straight away that someone was in trouble. He started screaming about rabies, tetanus and calling for an OSH investigation. I just looked perplexed, then decided to put on the cute, head-on-one-side look, because that can get me out of most situations. Not today.

He was writhing on the ground wanting intravenous pain killers, a couple of Swedish massage girls and accident compensation payout. There was even talk of a good old fashioned lawsuit. That wasn’t happening. Besides, I don’t have public liability insurance.

We went straight to the freezer and put some ice on it. I tried to ignore the duck breasts and the frozen sausages and the venison/goose salami. But despite my best intentions, I did note all those things were in the freezer.

We settled on the frozen peas and they were duly applied to the boss’s munted thumb and the slightly-punctured hand. We found some ice cubes, but by pure accident, none of them made it onto the area of the injury. Instead they fell conveniently into a short tumbler, followed by a shot or four of the Captain’s finest dark.

Champion chomper: The crocodile is the biggest biter in the business. And if you saw one sunning itself on a riverbank with its mouth open, it’s not skitting. Just cooling down, since they only have sweat glands in their mouth.

C hristmas

After about four rums he started seeing the funny side of it, thank goodness. We had a one-armed tussle on the mat with the play rope and everything seemed a bit better. Just goes to show how little mishaps can turn bad in no time. He should feel lucky he doesn’t own a snapping turtle. Bite Pressure tests show their jaw force is greater than dogs.

Then followed the boss’s regurgitation of annoying trivia he’s gleaned from Discovery Channel. Human bites average about 120 pounds of bite pressure.

(Shame he still talks in the old language and hasn’t come to terms with decimal weights and measures.)

Compare that to the average domestic dog bite, around 320 pounds of pressure. That’s nothing compared to White Sharks, at more than 600 pounds, a shark can bite off a human’s leg in just one chomp.

The snapping turtle applies a chomp factor of 1000 pounds (more than nine times stronger than humans). Snapping turtles’ bite strength is similar, are carnivorous to supplement their diet. Their jaws help tear apart the tissue of dead animals.

The Champion Chomper is the crocodile.

At 2500 pounds of bite pressure, they rarely lose their prey. Ouch.

As the rums went on, the story got better. Before long, the yarn had progressed from an accidental puppy nip, to wrestling a killer crocodile in the wilds of the Amazon.

The fact that they have alligators in the Amazon was largely lost, due to poetic licence, and the story just got better as the night went on.

Me, I was happy to be forgiven for an honest mistake and settle down on the rug at his feet and snuggle.

There’s a moral to the story.

Who knows what it is. Probably, to keep enough supplies of cane sugar by-product in the closet for emergencies.

‘Sweet victory’ in drug ring bust Police in the Bay of Plenty have smashed open an organised drug ring linked to the Mongrel Mob taking down two P-labs from potentially making millions of dollars worth of methamphetamine.

The four-month Operation Detroit culminated this week in a series of search warrants in Maketu, Te Puke and Tauranga involving approximately 40 police staff from three districts.

A total of 18 people have been arrested - 16 men

and two women. Three men and one woman were arrested for a variety of cannabis offences. The remaining 14 all face a variety of Class A drugrelated charges.

One P-lab was located in Tauranga last week and a second was the subject of a large fire in Katikati on Sunday.

Three ‘unusual’ bomb scares Explosives found in three separate Tauranga locations kept police and the bomb disposal squad busy on Wednesday evening as they worked to defuse the ‘unusual situation’.

Harbour death victim named The 29-year-old man found dead in Tauranga Harbour at the weekend is Ira Shephard. The Tauranga man was discovered caught up in piles underneath Berth 8 near the southern side of Mount Maunganui wharf on Saturday.

Ira grew up in Tauranga, attending Tauranga Intermediate before going on to Tauranga Boys’ College. He is described by his brother Charlie as a “true Tauranga local” who loved cars. “He was a very adventurous guy – he would give anything a go.”

Police are treating Ira’s death as unexplained as opposed to suspicious and are still trying to track his movements in the day’s leading up to his death. He was last seen in downtown Tauranga on December 1 about 10am.

Is it Council’s rush hour?

Elected members had their nose to the political grindstone this week as we worked through the business build up before Christmas.

It’s an annual ritual. Everyone knows its coming but somehow the workload just can’t be stretched out over the year

and there’s always this last minute rush.

Just like you probably!

The 18th Avenue intersection opposite the hospital will cost around $900,000, give or take 20 per cent contingency. Council/ratepayers will likely make a contribution for “betterment” and developers and the hospital will be asked to pay for the majority.

I received assurance that the new set

of lights at 18th Ave would be phased in with the 17th Ave lights and the existing pedestrian crossing would be moved north to be included in the 18th Ave project.

It’s my view that traffic should be encouraged to flow smoothly rather than the stop/start hopscotch effect that Cameron Road seems to be. I also raised the possibility of saving some of the road works by moving the cycle tracks off Cameron Road and forming them as part of the footpath, but that received a negative response. That part of Cameron Road is a real pinch point and I foolishly thought the 20,000 or so cars that pour through there should receive a priority over the 20 or so bikes that trickle through during the day. Silly me.

At Projects and Monitoring elected members heard from long-time council protagonist David Holland enthusing over Council’s dune care restoration programme down at Papamoa. David said even the P.D. people who were doing some of the work were also getting into the spirit of the programme. Wayne Moultrie responded by saying it was the first time in 40 years he had agreed with David – to much hilarity. Restoring the dunes requires removal of all the exotic plants and replacing with native plantings, so that when the wind blows those plants catch the sand, which builds the dunes, which protects against coastal erosion and preserves the beach. Inexplicably there are some people who oppose the programme and David’s point was that staff, contractors and workers should be praised and encouraged by council for their efforts.

There was a presentation from the police over how they intend to operate at the Mount over the holiday period. Suffice to say they will be policing to ensure a family atmosphere and the raucous party types can expect short shrift. They now have “smart devices” – read iPads – to process ne’er-do-wells at the roadside, instead of screeds of paper work at the police station.

This means more frontline police available in public for more time. They are cutting the time they will run ‘Alcatraz’ out the back of the police station this year, so they are anticipating less trouble. Of course it’s in the louts’ own hands and a good idea to avoid trouble and Alcatraz is not to cause it.

Urban dust

The next presentation was from the regional council, with an update on what they are doing around the city – a welcome initiative as Tauranga City ratepayers are the major rates funder of the regional council. I was dismayed however to learn that

although they were spending around $500,000 on air quality they saw ‘no significant issues’. I’ve been raising the issue of that black/grey dust that comes over the city – euphemistically called ‘urban dust’. In easterly winds Sulphur Point gets covered in it. We are breathing it. It’s in very significant quantities and I presume in westerly conditions it’s getting blown over the Mount.

A workshop on the Government’s proposal on elected members remuneration for the next triennium. Not a lot of change on the present system this council uses, as we moved away from meeting fees years ago. Unfortunately Government still focuses on time spent – not on effort, quality of contribution, ability and outcomes. As I’ve said before, in some councils some elected members made their best contribution by not turning up. At present an elected member can retain their seat by attending one out of three full council meetings and not even attending committee meetings. Of course they would probably only last one term! We were asked how much time each of us put in and estimates ranged from 20 hours

by Rick Curach to 45 or so for others. It’s almost impossible to gauge effectively but in my experience it’s a 24/7 obligation and people expect you to be available anytime, anywhere. It runs with the territory and if you don’t accept this, then it’s probably not for you. Talking about this, some elected members have been getting aggressive and abusive emails of late about this and that. Some of the signature names are ingenuous, so in the event we will now be asking for a phone number in some cases to ensure these are real people. For example, I am aware of one prolific emailer who has about a dozen user names.

Vital input A long, drawn out meeting on a proposed review of Smartgrowth. As it’s Christmas time I’ll spare you the detail but it is going out to you for consultation on a vote of 10-1, with Catherine Stewart dissenting.

Your input is vital in my opinion. For instance, it was the community input that sealed the fate at the failed ‘nodal intensification development, model. Agreement to consultation with you does not necessarily endorse the draft document. Update on the CEO appointment process – it’s work in progress with no final decision this week.

A great evening at TECT Arena for the Waipuna Hospice benefit evening last Saturday night. I mention this as a tribute to former councillor the late Bob Addison, whose vision for a multi purpose/ function/sports facility has become a reality. It wasn’t easy, but it seems council/users/designers/consultants got this one right. A very flexible and well organised staff ensure that it all runs like clockwork. Bob would be very proud and pleased with the finished product.

I recently received a presentation on the major drivers of change to 2025 as part of a strategic planning exercise.

On the whole the trends are relatively positive for New Zealand since nations which offer relatively more safety, security and harmony will achieve international competitive advantage as ‘safe havens’ for tourism, permanent living, and some categories of investment.

If New Zealand also capitalises on its abundant water supplies, its sustainable green image, its capacity to produce protein and its potential for renewable energy, it looks pretty positive for us.

The following issues were considered very relevant for our global future: • The cost of energy – particularly of oil and natural gas – will increase substantially.

• There will be more frequent and severe weather events resulting in more flooding, prolonged droughts and more unseasonable cold snaps.

Current engineering and safety standards will no longer be sufficient and we can expect substantial damage and cost.

• Changing lifestyles, work styles and families will mean more older people working longer, more urbanisation and changing living patterns.

Port in great position

I’m reassured to read a recent study on upper North Island ports that highlights how the Port has room to grow – by accommodating a projected growth in shipping and, in the future, it will be able to take larger ships.

This fits really well with the Government’s response this week to the Productivity Commission’s report on international freight transport services, in particular the recommendation to lift the quality of infrastructure planning and coordination.

I’m heartened to realise, yet again, how well regarded the port is and how well it is run.

I’m also thankful the regional council had the foresight 20 years ago to set up Quayside Holdings Ltd to manage its investments, including a nearly 55 percent shareholding in Port of Tauranga.

While the Port of Tauranga is based in the Western Bay, it’s important that we recognise how the whole region contributes to the Port’s success.

Without the regional supply chain feeding goods to the Port from across the region we wouldn’t need a port like we have.

It’s important that while the Port is well placed to cater for future growth, further work is carried out to ensure infrastructure, such as the roading network and rail system, can cope. The Port of Tauranga is an asset for the whole Bay of Plenty.

Hobbit versus Twilight Hundreds of people got a first-hand look at history in the making as Peter Jackson’s latest film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was released at midnight on Wednesday.

A little more than 300 filled the Tauranga Bay City Cinemas at 12pm on Wednesday to see The Hobbit in all three versions including 2dimensional, 3dimensional and the debut of a high frame rate showing the film in 48frames per second.

Bay City Cinemas owner Paul Desmond says about the same number of tickets were sold to The Hobbit as those who bought tickets to see the midnight

screening of Twilight Breaking Dawn part 2 last month.

Sir Peter Jackson shot The Hobbit in a high frame rate, which is expected to tell the fantasy story in the same way as the human eye sees the world.

Instead of shooting the film in the old conventional 35mm film, which used to show 24 single frames of film per second, Sir Peter used a HFR showing 48 single frames per second.

“We installed new equipment so we could produce it the way Peter Jackson intended it to be.

“It’s the way to see the film,” says Paul.

New Zealand was the first country in the world to release the film –two days before it is released in the United States and a day before the United Kingdom.

The Papamoa Lions Club dusted off their tool belts to help build and install four new beach picnic tables in time for summer.

The picnic tables, which can seat four on each side, were installed at Stella Place, Papamoa Beach this week in a joint initiative between the Papamoa Lions Club and the Tauranga City Council.

Project convenor Ted Hughes says the Lions had approached the city council six months ago after they noticed a lack of seating within the area.

“We looked at the whole area and thought that’s the most needed area. The beach needed some beautification.”

A group of about 16 members have been working on the tables at various times during the past three weeks along with preparation for their installation in what was a ‘big project,’ says Ted. “There were quite a few man hours. From making the tables, then the preparation of the concrete.”

A very special 12th birthday Wednesday proved a once in a lifetime birthday for two 12-year-old boys who turned 12 on the twelfth day of the twelfth month of 2012 or 12-12-12.

A festive word of warning In the world of presents, gift cards and vouchers are a popular safety net.

Consumer NZ says vouchers can seem a great solution to the stress of trying to pick out the perfect gift, but even this option has caveats and often cash is a better choice.

“Though you exchange vouchers for goods, they’re not the same as cash. If you lose a voucher, it’s too bad,” says spokesperson Sue Chetwin.

“The exception is if it’s made out to a specific person

and marked ‘not transferable’, which means the trader might have a record of it.” Sue also warns people to keep a track of the expiry date, because once it’s passed the trader has no obligation to honour the voucher, and if the business goes bust or changes hands, the voucher might be worth no more than a piece of paper.

“Gift cards are pretty much the same but in a credit card form. They may cost extra in fees to use, for example to check your balance. “They also tend to have an expiry date but it might not be shown on the card, so check this when you buy it.”

Spokesperson Alec Were says the competition is just one of a number of Christmas ideas underway to add that little bit of extra colour to the arcade during the holiday season.

“We’ve got the Christmas lights up in the cafe if people want to see those, all the stores have been decorated through the arcade.

“Everybody’s getting into the festive feeling and that’s what it’s all about.”

Donations always welcome at Foodbank “If we drag everyone in, we can achieve more.

“We sort of said ‘let’s see who can get this most’ but I didn’t care. It was about using that challenge to get more food in.” She says they support the foodbank annually because it is a worthy cause benefitting thousands across the city.

“It might be us one day, I hope not, but you never know, do you?”

Mike says the companies’ donation was fantastic and is another sign of the generosity of the Tauranga community.

“All the community support – businesses, churches, schools, and people who contribute all year around, all the support is just unbelievable.”

Almost 2000 items of food were donated following the Mount Maunganui Santa Parade on December 1.

Mike says this was one of the largest contributions the charity has ever seen.

“It puts us into a strong position going in to the new year.” He says with Psa numbers increasing, staff are predicting an increase in demand in 2013.

Tauranga residents are being encouraged to spread the love this Christmas and donate items to Tauranga Foodbank

Chairman Mike Baker is blown away by the generosity of the community in recent weeks, with a number of significant donations including more than 800 items delivered by staff at the new ANZ Business Centre last week.

But he says they can never have too many donations.

Companies within the building competed with one another on Friday to see which group could produce the most items for the foodbank.

Cooney Lees Morgan administration manager Michelle Senkus initiated the competition and says each year staff at Cooney Lees Morgan donate to the foodbank.

This year, after moving into the ANZ building, she thought she would challenge the other companies in the new complex to do the same.

KPMG, Staples Rodway, Bayleys and Rothburys signed up for the challenge and representatives from each company gathered together on Friday to pile more than 800 items into an awaiting van.

“We’ve always done this, but being here, it was kind of like we can get so much more,” says Michelle.

Books great Christmas presents for children Have you considered giving the young child/children in your life a book for Christmas? It may well be a gift that they treasure for a long time and it can deliver on so many levels.

The benefits of reading to young children are many and varied.

To start with, regular reading aloud fosters literacy skills.

It is an ideal way for them to learn about letters, words and sounds, while developing an understanding of how books work. Children hear a variety of words, which

helps broaden their vocabularies, and helps them learn about the way language is structured. Listening to stories helps youngsters make sense of the world and their place in it, while broadening general knowledge, introducing them to a variety of concepts and firing their imaginations. As a child focuses their attention on a book being read aloud, their ability to concentrate is being enhanced.

In addition to all these skills vital for success at school and beyond, reading together is a wonderful way to build a close relationship with a child, making him/her feel secure and involved.

There is a bewildering array of books on the market for preschoolers, and your little one’s interests and stage of development need to be considered when choosing a book.

New Zealand has its own favourite authors, who are world-class, e.g. Lynley Dodd, Margaret Mahy, Joy Cowley. There are more and more picture books which feature Kiwi culture, flora and fauna, with which our young readers can identify readily.

But don’t overlook the tried and true classics, e.g. fairy stories, nursery rhymes and others such as Peter Rabbit, Winnie the Pooh, and Dr Suess, which have delighted children for generations.

Well-loved picture books frequently feature some of the following: appealing illustrations; repetition, rhyme and rhythm; humour; and boys enjoy stories with lots of action and a male main character who often has a problem to solve.

Some children enjoy non-fiction books that extend their knowledge of favourite things, e.g. dinosaurs, vehicles, animals, space. Alphabet, number, shape and colour books can be suitable choices as well.

This week Progressive Enterprises area manager Keith Whiteman handed BOPDHB medical leader and paediatrician Dr Hugh Lees a cheque for $65,042 – paying for items including a glucose monitor, a vital signs monitor and teach tool for child birth.

Hugh thanks Countdown staff and the community for a fantastic fundraising effort in what ensures the Bay of Plenty is equipped with state of the art technology.

“It means we have got up to date equipment and we are not struggling to keep up anymore. To get these is a value added.”

Within the Bay of Plenty region a series of bingo nights, an amazing race and a masquerade ball were run to help raise funds.

Not even a flat battery could prevent Tauranga’s TS Chatham Sea Cadets from celebrating the arrival of their new and improved support boat this month.

After 18 months of fundraising, the 15 cadets launched their new state of the art 4.5metre aqua-pro inflatable as water safety support for the Rotary Club of Rotorua

and Swim Rotorua in the inaugural lakes swim at Owaka Bay on Saturday, December 8.

TS Chatham operating commander Lee White says it was a great day, but not everything went smoothly on the boat’s first launch. “We were all set to go and the battery was flat, but apart from that it all went well.”

The new boat will replace the unit’s 20-year-old aluminium support boat, which was at the end of

its safe and usable life. “The new boat, with a 50 horsepower, can keep up with them [the cadets] when they are sailing. It’s a move from the 20th to 21st century.”

Along with the cadets’ fundraising efforts, they were able to purchase the boat through grants from Pub Charity and the Tauranga Rotary Club.

The old support boat has now being given a well-deserved rest.

Resurrected sport bouncing back Once, not that long ago, the constant, rapid sounds of table tennis emanated from halls the length and breadth of the Bay of Plenty.

Clubs sprouted up in Greerton, Otumoetai, Papamoa, Maketu, Paengaroa, Te Puke, Whakatane, Rotorua, at Tauranga Hospital and Te Matai Road, housing players hell bent on interclub domination.

As can be the case with minority sports though, the departure of a few influ-

ential families led to a malaise which threatened to scuttle the sport in the Bay. Yet now, a return to the glory days seems likely.

Table Tennis New Zealand executive director John Lea says the BOP Association has been reformed after 10 years of hibernation, with coaching clinics back up and running.

There are fewer clubs operating now than at the height of the sport, but John says the clubs are at least viable now.

A total of $20,000 funding for NZ regional development officer and para

table tennis coach John Tuki and Kadia Keller Rice to train kids in schools next year is another step in the right direction.

The fact Tauranga is now the national centre for para play, and will host the nationals next year, is another major boon, says the chief executive.

Clubs in the area have increased from six to 10 in the past year, including the Tauranga club housed at Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre, which boasts 12 tables including two donated by Specsavers Bayfair.

John Tuki has volunteered as the NZ Para Table Tennis coach for 18 months, a role which covers 11 different classifications. “The one thing that I love coaching people with disabilities is the challenge of trying to find a way for them to play,” says John.

“Some have half a leg, one arm, are in a wheel chair, have cerebral palsy, some can’t even hold a bat because they no muscles in their forearm, or no bicep or triceps.”

He was named TTNZ’s coach of the year recently, before travelling to Korea for his level one training course after only taking up the sport two years ago.

The huge setback is the continued rejection of table tennis as a sport for the AIMS, at a time when table tennis is being promoted to that age group.”

Recently, John took eight players from Tauranga to the Maori

nationals in Auckland. Of those, John, came third in the open men’s event and runner-up in the men’s over 40’s. He also won the mixed doubles competition with Jodie Burton, who was runnerup in the women’s open.

Caroline Richards was runner-up in the women’s over 40’s competition, while Nicole Duncan won the under 16, under 20 singles and doubles events.

When we want to learn, we tend to draw on the knowledge and experiences of others.

Whether it be books, friends, parents, professionals or YouTube, we each walk our own path of investigation.

The same is true for surfing, whether you are learning to surf or improving your repertoire. It could be a professional or your mate but if someone with more experience helps you in your journey, your speed of learning will be increased and therefore your enjoyment enriched. Once you ride your first wave or make that first barrel or stomp your first air, you will be hooked and from then on you will want to continue on your path to surfing stardom.

On a recent Coromandel excursion, I happened to witness the re-emergence of a surfer who in his prime chose to step away from surfing and pursue other avenues in life. When I saw him he was running a surfing school and had used his experiences to help a number of youth to enjoy surfing for the first time. He used his skills to demonstrate how to complete manoeuvres and the students seemed to enjoy watching and absorbing

his proficiency. He spoke to me about the reasons he never made a career from surfing and stated that the main one is professional guidance.

During discussions with other surfers, many have said that maybe he is the best that never was.

What if I told you that some of the best local surfers never had lessons when they were starting out? But to fulfil their desire to conquer their next quest, manoeuvre or competition most have used professional advice at sometime in their thirst for progression. We all need it at some time or another. So having the honesty to ask for help or advice is all part of the culture of surfing.

The knowledge and experience of others is what we should draw on, whether you are a beginner or expert.

When you first learnt to drive a car, there would have been a guiding hand present. Thankfully you are able to crash when surfing with limited injury, the same can’t be said when you are behind the wheel. I still recall my first surf as much as I recall my first hill start!

Living close to the coast we often take for granted our opportunity to learn. But moving of time is one of the only certainties in life.

Swim and gym, local charities win

When you pay to swim or gym on December 20 TCAL will donate a can of food to the Tauranga SPCA or Foodbank, based on your choice.

On Thursday December 20, Tauranga City Aquatics Limited is doing its part for the community in time for Christmas – but it needs your help to make it as successful as possible.

It’s easy to participate too. Swimmers and gymmers just need to turn up as per normal to any of the five TCAL facilities, and once they have paid for their entry, they will be invited to nominate either the SPCA or Tauranga Foodbank to receive a can of food. There’s no need to bring cans along, all that’s required is for people to vote once they’ve entered

the facility. At the end of the day on the 20th, TCAL staff will then count up the votes for each charity and purchase the cans for donation. “Last year we did a similar campaign, but invited customers to choose which can of food we would purchase for the Foodbank, whereas this year we have decided to support two charities but using a similar system,� says TCAL CEO Tania Delahunty. “Our staff really enjoyed the charity day last year and got a buzz from counting up the votes to see what we would be donating. Customers also got a thrill from knowing that their gym or swim entry was making a difference to the community too, so we’re looking for more of the same this year.�

A Gunnar of a fight Head boxing trainer Chris Walker is among those lining up to take part in the Carrus Lord of the Ring Charity Boxing Challenge next year after a great event on Saturday.

Chris says he will definitely make himself available for the event again next year, following the successful of the December 8 event.

“It went really, really well. It was a good success. All of the participants did really well. There were a few surprises on the night but that’s actually good.”

The Carrus Lord of the Ring Charity Boxing Challenge at TECT Arena on Saturday raised $69,215 for Waipuna Hospice when 22 contestants fought it out after weeks of serious training under Chris’ watchful eye.

“It was a win-win all round,” says Chris.

He says every fight brought a different element of excitement into the ring.

“The matchings were quite even and the action

they produced was actually really good.

“There were some guys who were quite skilful and there were some guys who showed plenty of heart and courage; there was a mixture of all sorts.”

Tauranga resident Gunnar Jackson took out the professional fight against his opponent Moses Loelu.

Trained by Chris, at Tauranga Boxing Club, Gunnar has won 15 out of his 21 fights since he became professional in 2010.

Alcohol reform under way Tauranga City and Western Bay of Plenty District Councils’ decision to start work early on a joint Local Alcohol Policy was vindicated this week with the first reading of the former Alcohol Reform Bill.

The three bills are expected to receive Royal assent before Christmas.

Launching the career cycle

Cycle enthusiasts can now build a career in the bike industry in Tauranga with the launch of a new bike mechanic course next year.

Course developer Stephen Strawbridge from Adventure Education says the programme fills a gap in the cycle industry, which until now had no recognised training programmes or career pathway.

Stephen says the NZQA approved programme offers another option for those wanting to study in the Western Bay of Plenty with its 22-week practical hands-on programme starting in February. It has been endorsed by industry group BIANZ and short course provider Shimano Service Centre.

Rocket Bikes owner-operator Caen Chapman-Taylor is among local bike shop owners enthusiastic about how it will help ensure new staff have the required

mechanical skills. “I think it’s excellent – it provides a great start for anyone interested in getting into the cycle industry. There are definitely plenty of young people who want to be in the industry, but until now there has been nothing like this available.”

This meant trainees needed to be taught on the job, costing shops trainer’s time and resulting in mistakes and problems offering a consistent standard of service.

Students who graduate from the level three Bike Service Technician programme can follow it with the 18-week level four Bike Mechanic programme in July.

The 10 course places are filling fast. Stephen says after running two courses in Auckland they found the best students were often those changing career, because they had a passion for cycling.

Among those switching careers is mountain bike enthusiast Ryan Hall, who at 32 is excited about leaving behind car painting for something that is healthier which he loves. Details: www.BikeMechanic.co.nz

Turning passion for art into careers Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is taking students with a passion for art and creativity and teaching them to become artists capable of making a living from their talent.

Applications are now open for the Aka Rakai Toi Diploma in Art Level 6: a two year, full-time arts course focusing on developing students’ unique, personal signature.

Media, arts and design group leader Mary Stewart says their aim is that graduates leave the programme confident in their ability to create and develop ideas.

“Creative thinking is one of the major focuses of the programme. It’s very much about developing strategies for employment (mostly self-employment) and introducing them to the idea that art isn’t just painting a picture – it’s about the ‘creative think’ that underpins innovation.”

In year one, students focus on exploring different media and techniques before developing their own styles in year two.

The programme focuses on arts business throughout the programme, which Mary says is important for selfemployment.

“We have a really diverse range of artists; it’s not just about the person who draws perfectly. There are many things people do that are about their own expression of art such as sculpture, collage, photography etc.

“You may enjoy writing, in which case you could be writing reviews and critiques.”

Tips to avoid holiday weight gain When we think of Christmas, we often think of indulging in delicious food, but for those who struggle with weight this could also be one of the most stressful times of year.

I suggest you aim to maintain your current weight rather than focus on losing it.

Follow these simple tips for cutting calories without cutting back on fun during the festive season: • Eat first, then party. Have a healthy snack about an hour before you go out. This way

you won’t arrive hungry and head straight for the table of food.

• Don’t torture yourself by sitting or standing next to the food table.

• Plan your menus and only buy and prepare as much as you need.

• If you are the entertainer, tell your guests there’s no need to bring food because you have it covered.

• Ask people not to give you food as gifts, especially chocolates, lollies and

nuts.

• Don’t finish your plate.

Wasting is far better than the calories ending up on your waist.

• Put away jars of nuts and lollies so they are out of sight.

• Only fill your own glass when it’s empty, otherwise you can lose count of top-ups.

• Chew your food slowly so you feel more satisfied and less bloated afterwards.

New Bay surgery reduces waiting list A new streamlined treatment option for patients requiring non-urgent gall bladder surgery is dramatically slashing surgery waiting times.

The treatment, offered by Bay of Plenty District Health Board, means patients who are otherwise healthy can be referred to Tauranga Hospital by their family doctor, where they will be booked directly onto a list for surgery.

This avoids patients enduring up to five-month waits to see a surgeon in a clinic and reduces the risk of further attacks of gall bladder pain occurring throughout the wait for surgery.

Dr Natasha Roberton from Papamoa Pines Medical

Centre says she was most impressed when the first patient she referred through this new pathway had her surgery less than three weeks.

“She was most uncomfortable when I referred her, so she was thrilled with the speed of this system.”

Patients treated through the direct referral method have been able to have laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery within four weeks of seeing their GP. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder, using a tube-shaped telescope through the abdomen.

Having this procedure instead of an open cholecystectomy means the surgery can be performed as a day case and no overnight hospital stay is needed.

Making posh party food at home Wholemeal Pin-Wheel Crepe with Corn Beef and Mustard Makes six large crepes

It’s that time of year again when everyone is out enjoying end of year functions and entertaining at home.

When asked to bring along something for a party, you could stop by the supermarket and buy something pre-made or create something unique that will be appreciated by all. With a few ingredients and a bit of time, you can make a very tasty pin-wheel crepe that looks and tastes like it was from some posh delicatessen and slice it up like sushi to serve on individual plates or piled high on platters for a bigger crowd.

Crepes are relatively easy to make and are substantially filling. Before I have used smoked salmon and sour cream – this time I am using corned beef and mustard aioli. Incidentally, I had a delicious crepe at the farmers’ market from Jules crepes which was made with New Zealand grown buckwheat flour. The buckwheat adds another taste altogether; an earthy, mushroom-like taste, and buckwheat is a flour that’s gluten free. This week’s recipe however uses wholemeal flour but buckwheat flour can be substituted for those with gluten intolerance.

Open to the Public

Crepe mixture 3-4 eggs, beaten 2 cups of milk 1 cup wholemeal or buckwheat flour Sea salt 1 tablespoon of oil

Filling 100-150g shaved slices of corned beef (or ham or beef ) 2 tablespoon wholegrain mustard ½ cup aioli (homemade or store bought) Mustard greens (optional)

Method Make the crepe batter by beating the eggs, milk and oil.

Sift the flour into a separate bowl and make a well in the centre. Pour the egg, milk and oil mixture into the well in the flour.

Whisk out any lumps and thin with extra milk, if necessary, to make a thin batter.

Allow the mixture to rest for a few minutes then pour a measured amount, approximately ¼ cup, into a large non-stick or oiled pan and sluice around until the bottom is covered. Wait until all the liquid has cooked then turn over. Don’t try to flip them –

use a spatula or fish slice. It saves time cleaning up the mess.

Repeat the process, adjusting the element heat until you have perfect crepes.

Lay the crepes out while they are still warm. Top with the corned beef then mix together the mustard and aioli and spread over the top of the corned beef.

Carefully roll the whole thing up like a Swiss sponge roll then wrap in tinfoil and twist at both ends. Leave in the fridge until required for up to two days then just unroll from foil and slice and present to make a memorable party treat.

Here’s a tip to help keep your berries fresher for longer.

At home, prepare a mixture of one part vinegar (white or apple cider works best) and 10 parts water. Swirl the

berries in the mixture, drain and pop in the fridge – the mixture is so diluted you won’t taste the vinegar.

Mould spores and bacteria on the surface of the fruit that can cause the fruit to spoil are killed by the vinegar. Raspberries will last a week or more and strawberries go almost two weeks without getting mouldy and soft.

Tauranga couple Laurie and Marion Sanders weren’t expecting company on Monday night when two visitors arrived on their doorstep.

Despite Christmas being a time when people expect a few surprises, the couple were gob-smacked when Sun Media general manager Ross Brown and Travelcom managing director Don Menzies

informed them they had won a weekend for two to Melbourne, as part of a recent joint promotion.

Marion says it is a great treat for the pair, who have not taken a holiday together for a long time because of their demanding work and volunteering commitments.

Also let them know of any emergency contact numbers for you and your service people and then we will all enjoy our Christmas and New Year.

QV Valuer Nicky Harris says the momentum in property value increases at the start of the year has eased slightly during the last three months making it easier for potential buyers this festive season.

Nicky says there has also been a recent interest in renovated character homes.

The national median house price rose 4.3 per cent, a new record high, rising to $383, 250 with all regions recording increases in sales volume compared to November last year.

More than 20 per cent of the number of homes sold for the month of October was sold by auction.

Houses sold by auction in the Bay of Plenty and Waikato regions accounted for 10.3 per cent of the national total of homes being sold in the year ending November 2012.

A gift of safety Parents and caregivers are being warned to be extra diligent when using and constructing children’s toys and products, after poor safety results in recent years.

A third of children’s products tested during the past five years have had serious faults that could cause safety problems, according to Consumer NZ. Some electronic goods, especially ones bought over the internet, might be hazardous if they don’t comply with NZ safety standards.

“Check kids’ stuff is covered by safety standards - look for Australia/ NZ (AS/NZS), British (BS), American (ASTMor CFR) and European (EN) standards. Be careful when buying second hand, even those covered by a standard might be out-of-date or damaged. Make sure you have proper instructions for setting up nursery products so you can do it correctly and safely,” Consumer NZ’s warning says.

Buyers are advised to check the voltage of electronics, which must be 230 volts and 50 Hertz to be safe. Legal electronics should have a Supplier Declaration of Conformity to back them up.

Mother and daughter duo Kathryn and Alex Morison have found a new way to give the home a bit of pizzazz by restoring old, used furniture and turning them into funky and bright coloured feature pieces for both inside and outside.

During the past few months, Kathryn and Alex have been sourcing and restoring old, broken down furniture and making them into trendy feature pieces for the home.

Having thoroughly enjoyed the process, the pair has decided to share their original designs with the Tauranga community.

Kathryn and Alex launched Zazz in the old Hannahs shop at Fashion Island in Papamoa yesterday.

Zazz is an exhibition displaying some their innovative designs. Paintings by local artist Patrick Gibbons and artwork by Kathyrn and Alex are also on display.

Kathryn says she enjoys reviving beautiful old furniture with bright colours and new upholstery.

“Generally funky, bright, just eye-catching, it’s like a piece of art except you can use it.”

Kathryn is also offering advice to people who wish to turn something old into something new and will help them design their own restored feature piece for the home. Kathryn and Alex’s original design, restored furniture pieces and artwork are on sale at the exhibition, drop in between 10am-5pm from December 14-21.

The festive season isn’t quite so jolly in some parts of town.

Tauranga Community Foodbank Trust chairman Mike Baker says 7500 food parcels have been issued in the past 12 months – with many more expected to be needed this Christmas.

“What the food bank can do for them is to ensure that there is at least some food on their tables over this period and that this support will be on-going - providing, of course, that they qualify for assistance.

“We have 55-60 referral agents. If they decide that the client is eligible they contact the food bank and a person (or family) can receive two food parcels in a 12-month period. Mike says the food bank has plenty of local support, but the need is great for people such as Rachel Bell.

Christmas is cancelled in Rachel’s household this year as the money just isn’t there. The Bay of Plenty woman and her husband are on invalid benefits and struggle to survive. Rachel often has to choose

between buying food and paying bills, and Christmas makes things harder. “When I tell my daughter we won’t have a Christmas, she asks why not and it’s so hard when you have to sit there and try and explain… but she does understand. It is the hardest thing I have had to do. I have never been like this in my life, having nothing to give my family.”

Rachel is not alone. The rising costs of living means Petunia McKeown’s family is approaching Christmas differently this year. They are making gift hampers for each family instead of buying individual presents.

“Our families understand money is tight, so they aren’t expecting too much in the way of presents. The main thing for us all is being able to spend quality time together and enjoy the reactions of the kids to Christmas day. I feel sad for the younger children that won’t experience that discovery of a mountain of presents Christmas morning because their families simply cannot afford to do that anymore.”

Students talk it up at inaugural event Talks on themes ranging from medical genetic innovation in Tauranga to tanning, tattoos and talking animals were among topics covered in the latest Priority One event.

Priority One Instep manager Lyn Parlane says the inaugural Tauranga TED Talk event, held at Classic Flyers, was a major success – with 12 Year 10 students giving three minute presentations

on the topic of their choice. Lyn says the aim of the competition was to encourage young people to develop their presentation skills, as effective communication is critical to build an innovative culture for business success.

“The judges had a very difficult time deciding the winners as all the presentations were of an extremely high standard.”

Following the success of the

initial event, Lyn expects more schools and students to get involved in next year’s event.

Competing students had come from Tauranga Girls’ and Boys’ colleges, Papamoa College and Otumoetai College.

Otumoetai College student Annie Freeman won the first place title for her talk on matching children with reading books to increase student engagement.

Industry growth encourages new talent The real estate market in Tauranga has seen significant improvements in recent months, making the industry a great option for people considering a change in career.

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic real estate programme coordinator Garry Chapman says while Tauranga isn’t yet seeing the same growth as Auckland or Christchurch, there is considerable improvement.

“Many agency owners and salespeople are reporting their best results for several years.

“It’s a particularly good time for anyone new in the industry because there’s activity there, they can get established and when it really picks up, they’ll be even better placed to succeed.”

Applications are now open for the polytechnic’s National Certificate in

Christmas shopper spending rises this year There are just two weeks until Christmas and people are getting into the shopping spirit with spending in the Bay of Plenty rising by 2.6 per cent compared with the same time last year, according to the latest Paymark Figures.

So far, $257.6milion has been spent in the region in November, compared to the $251.1million in November 2011.

The number of transactions in the Bay of Plenty has increased by 3.2 per cent, with 5.08 million transactions recorded this year.

Last year, 4.93 million transactions were recorded. The increase in the region’s spending is in line with a national trend of 4.6 per cent annual growth compared to November 2011.

Head of sales and marketing Paul Whiston says the increase in preChristmas spending has followed the patterns of recent years.

“We have seen the usual lift in spending from mid-November and the last seven days of the month were up 10.4 per cent as compared to the last seven days of October.

“Looking at the past five years, this increase is in line with the average November spending trends, however despite the increase we are aware that for many retailers it is still tough going.”

Based on recent years, Paul expects the real rush is yet to come.

“Between 2007 and 2011 spending jumped an average of 27 per cent from November to December as Kiwis ramped up their card usage in anticipation of Christmas.

“We hope to see retailers reaping the benefits in the coming weeks.”

Sick and tired of PC ruling life Insular city with racist underbelly and stifling country’s progress I am heartily sick and tired of PC ruling the lives of New Zealanders and stifling progress in this country. PC is now telling me that I am responsible for every child that is deprived in some way. These wonderful people never seem to have come to grips with explaining to me/us how I/we are responsible for some parental pair or solo parent boozing up all their income or sniffing it up or gambling it away.

I wish someone would explain concisely and clearly to one and all how that is our fault.

There is no such thing as child poverty there is only parental poverty. I wish all the PCrs would get that, let me say it again there is no such thing as child poverty there is only parental poverty.

Compared to other countries poverty does not really exist in NZ we have so called poverty sufferers driving round in cars smoking and drinking etc you can’t do that if you suffer poverty.

What is making things tougher in this

country has nothing to do with me/ us it is mainly Govt policies of both major parties. There is too much red tape in NZ relating to employment and running a business, get rid of that and people might start employing again.

Further NZ employers need to get treatment for their short arm deep pocket syndrome so they can pay a real wage to employees.

I would never employ a worker or start up a business today it is too dangerous the pitfalls are many and vicious . A firm in the Waikato was fined $40,000 because a man lost part of a finger due to not using a guard.

If the guard was available then it was not the employers fault that the employee didn’t use the guard. If there was no guard then health and safety should be the ones fined not the employer because they are supposed to inspect factories and make sure safe practice exists in all factories.

Te Tumu development and payments Further to the article about the Te Tumu land purchase, and Mr Faulkner’s brief mention of it in his weekly report, I have been interested to see that the $10m payout (as well as $5m from WBOPDC) for the land was made to Tauranga’s biggest and richest developer to stop them putting a rural subdivision in the middle of land set aside for the future Te Tumu development.

Somehow this would have impacted on Te Tumu. This development has since stalled.

The land cannot be sold to offset the loan as the developer has the option to repurchase the land at any time in the ten years between 2016 and 2026.

Talk about a deal set in Heaven! To

make things worse, the $10m council borrowed for us has not had any interest paid on it (this has been added to the loan or “loan funded) nor any of the principal paid so now the debt is about $13m.

Now I don’t know about anyone else but the whole shady saga smacks of incompetence to me and it seems that Council have been outmanouvred by a very slick organisation. Council’s own monster, the bureaucratic system, is designed to examine projects such as this so they don’t impact on the ratepayer. Why we should pay out so much to protect the Te Tumu developers is a mystery to me.

A few years ago I packed up my things, left Auckland and moved to the city of Tauranga. This was partly due to a work transfer and also the fact I was constantly getting told how great the this city was. ‘The weather is amazing’ ‘The beaches are stunning’ ‘The people are friendly and very welcoming’ I was excited.

What I discovered however was an extremely insular city with a racist underbelly, full of christian

fundamentalists who are terribly homophobic. Collecting signatures With a crowd of 30,000 people watching the Santa Parade at The Mount Ebenezer Scrooge (aka Tourism BOP) saved on its Christmas giving this year by denying proper I-Site information to this crowd which equates to about 15 cruise ship loads of visitors.

I was most impressed with the work done by the TCC arborists who did the trimming of pohutukawa trees in Turret Rd, they worked hard and did a great job.

The work was done because the trees were growing over the road, when a neighbour asked if they were going to cut a limb that was overhanging the grass verge, that was only 120cm from the ground and was a hazard, he was told he could not cut it because it was not on his plan, the arborist told my neighbour he would be in trouble if he did and was advised to ring the council, which he did.

Environment BOP, would be out to have a look, which they did, and Bob was told they will have to go back to planning to get the OK to cut it down.

When you have arborists on the job experts in their field, why do they have to go back to bureaucrats in planning to get the OK to cut a limb, which commonsense tells them needs to come out.

Is this how they keep all the staff employed, and does our Mayor and our elected members know this sort of thing goes on every day?

Rug pulled from Maori, National parties conspire to divide NZ under NZers’ feet It is refreshing to know that there is at least someone (Christina Humphreys of Katkati) who has taken her head out of the sand and drawn attention to the Maori Party proposal to lock New Zealand into a new written Constitution.

One only need look at the Review Panel to see where that would leave us - out of the ten members, at least half are Maori. Asians outnumber Maori in this country so where are their representatives? The Maori Party aim is to have the Treaty of Waitangi “principles” entrenched as supreme law.

The Supreme Court would then have the power to strike down any laws deemed inconsistent with the Treaty, and we know how crafty the Maori Party is at using the Treaty to claim ownership of everything under the sun from water to wetas!

This would subvert the principle of parliamentary supremacy, which underpins our constituional arrangements. Ultimate power would shift from the people’s elected representatives in Parliament to the judiciary.

We already have a very workable unwritten constitution so why, again, waste millions of taxpayers` money mending something which is not broken?

The Treaty of Waitangi is no longer a symbol of historic unification but has become a political weapon of division. New Zealand is no longer a country of two races but embraces many who expect, under our laws, to be treated as equal - all Kiwis! Maori trying to entrench biculturalism is divisive, dangerous and backward looking. A Treaty-based constitution would enshrine Maori privilege, turning non-Maori New Zealanders into second-class citizens in their own land. We should all write to our MPs demanding a nation-wide Referendum, not as planned, private meetings with carefully selected interest groups.

Wake up New Zealanders - the rug is about to be pulled from under your feet!.

Maori Party conspire with National Party to divide New Zealand: In New Zealand, using a low-profile government constitutional review, the Maori Party is attempting to force through a new bicultural constitution that would impose the vision of the Maori sovereignty movement onto the country, $4 million of taxpayers’ money is being spent on the Maori Party’s constitutional review, they plan to force a new bicultural constitution enshrining the Treaty of Waitangi as supreme law onto the country forever radically changing the governance of New Zealand.

What is a concern, however, is the fact that the top echelon of the National Party will stitch up a deal with the Maori Party – and possibly the Labour Party - in favour of cross party support for a bicultural constitution, bypassing the public altogether and are using a deliberate strategy to keep the whole constitutional review under the radar of public opinion. That means there is a genuine risk that the country as a whole will remain largely unaware that a major threat is on the horizon.

The same cannot be said about Maoridom. A whole separate engagement process has been set up for active consultation with Maori. Some $2 million out of the total $4 million budget has been allocated for the purpose. This means that supporters of the Maori sovereignty movement will be extremely well informed.

If a public referendum held on the proposal to introduce a bicultural constitution into New Zealand resulted in a massive defeat, it would send a definitive message to the government that New Zealanders want to move forwards not backwards, that we are a nation of many peoples not just two, and that we completely reject the notion that race should define our future in New Zealand. Forestry offers health and career benefits Happiness for Paul Ashby is fresh air and forests.

When the Papamoa-based Englishman found being hunched over a computer all day in his graphic art business was taking a toll on his health and his morale he decided it was time for a drastic change.

He wanted to find something that combined physical activity with his interest in management and business planning and decided forest management fitted the bill.

After studying for two years at Waiariki Institute of Technology, Paul now has a Diploma in Forest Management and is looking forward to a long, varied – and much healthier – new career.

Paul came to New Zealand from Nottingham, England, in pursuit of a better life for his family and had his own graphic design business in Tauranga for three years before studying at Waiariki.

Paul found himself among students from all walks of life – some with previous forestry experience looking to move into management and others, like him, looking for a completely new direction.

He’s gone straight to work

since finishing his studies at Waiariki. Paul secured a job as export scheduler at Rotoruabased forest management company Timberlands where he’s in charge of getting logs destined for export markets in China, Korea and India, from logging yards to the Port of Tauranga, mainly by train.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Paul says. “I stepped straight into a job and there are so many different possibilities for the future – I’m loving what I’m doing and passionate about this industry.

“I can see myself having a great and long career in forest management. This is the best move I could have made.”

The top student on his course, Paul received the inaugural Educational Award for top forestry diploma student in 2012 at the FITEC industry awards.

Mark Cleland, one of Paul’s tutors at Waiariki, says the number of export logs is set to increase significantly in the coming years with a lot of wood coming on stream for harvesting. That means there are good career prospects in forest management.

Mark says there will be an increased need for people qualified in forest management over the next decade and the Waiariki course is suited to, not only school leavers, but also people like Paul who are looking for a career change or who have perhaps been working in the forestry industry and are keen to move into planning and management.

About 10 per cent of Waiariki’s forest management students are female and Waiariki is the only provider in New Zealand of the diploma level qualification.

A Katikati local, who contacted SunLive privately, says Woodland Road residents are worried the speed limit on the road is too high and fear someone will die.

The resident says in some cases locals have illegally removed road signs. A dangerous intersection at Wright Road and State Highway 2 has concerned Katikati farmer Steve Dowman who is unhappy with the state of roads in the area.

“I think the standard of the roads has dropped quite a bit. They are just get-

ting more and more dangerous.

“I haven’t put in a submission I just put in a complaint.”

Western Bay of Plenty District Council transportation and roading manager Alex Finn says the council is aware of the request for the speed limit on Woodland Road and other local roads to be reviewed and council staff is looking into it.

“We will be asking for public submissions on proposed changes to speed limits on various roads early next year in our annual review.

“We have limited funds for constructing footpaths on rural roads, and focus our priorities where the need is greatest.

“Pedestrians must take into account that vehicles travel at higher speeds on rural roads and take simple precautions such as facing oncoming traffic and wearing bright clothing.”

Orchard purchase ‘confidence’ The purchase of a large-scale new variety kiwifruit orchard at Paengaroa is a demonstration of confidence in the industry’s future says Paul Jones, a spokesman for the purchasers.

“It was easy to find people keen to be part of the purchase, despite the impacts of the disease Psa-V,” says Paul, who is a director of kiwifruit management company, DMS Progrowers.

The 48 canopy hectare orchard, which sold this week, is predominantly planted in Zespri’s new G3 and G14 varieties with some producing Hayward vines.

Despite that risk Paul says it took less than a week to form a group of investors.

“In fact we had to turn some away and reduce the level of investment by others.

All who are part of the small group are experienced in the kiwifruit industry and well aware of the challenges of Psa.” The orchard is well established with rootstock aging from 10 to 20 years and while there are some G14 green vines at

commercial production levels, it will be 2014 before vines grafted this year come into production.

“This orchard has been managed to a high standard and the 2012 grafting programme has been very successful.

The property has been well presented, with a very high standard of infrastructure and fixtures included in the sale.

We congratulate the vendors in the standard of the asset they have built.”

The sale gives immediate possession and the orchard will be managed by DMS under best practice systems as recommended by Kiwifruit Vine Health, which will include the use of copper sprays and close monitoring for signs of infection.

“We are delighted to have been given the chance to buy such a high quality, large scale property. This represents a unique opportunity to explore the potential of the new Zespri varieties at an entry price that we believe represents exceptional value.”

DMS will also pack the fruit and Paul says its post-harvest facilities have the experience to do so.

“We already handle 10 per cent of New Zealand’s total new variety inventory.”

Papamoa Beach resident Dave Holland exposed the unsavoury side of green politics when he told councillors this week that their contractors and staff working on dunes restoration are being abused by the public.

“They need support, these staff, because there are a lot of vested interests going on here, and it has been going on for too long,” says Dave.

Dave blames the abuse on the beachfront property owners who illegally took reserve land for their own use, and grassed and planted it.

The land has been taken back and the restoration of the native vegetation is underway.

“They have worked from the east part of Papamoa right through to Pacific Shores,” says Dave.

“They have done a brilliant job.

The benefits are already being seen

in eastern Papamoa where they started 18 months ago.”

Contractors and community service workers have been working really hard on the project and taking pride in their work, says Dave. They don’t deserve the abuse they are getting.

“It’s just not acceptable. These people are getting all excited through ignorance and conflict of interest.

“I’ve been involved with it 10 to 15 years and put up with abuse myself from a person in east Papamoa who accused me of crossing his land, which was council land.”

“At the end of the day they are people who are encroaching or have encroached, and they are taking umbrage at that.”

Dave also made a plea at the committee meeting for the council to continue funding the dunes restoration, otherwise the weeds will return and the dunes will revert.

Project leader Stephanie Brackman says the council is obliged to do the weed control for political as well as ecological reason.

A number of the species identified in the Regional Pest Management Plan are growing in

the dunes. The weeds also smother the native grasses, which play the main role in keeping the dune system viable.

“It’s the function that is the issue for us, the protection function from storm events that native plants give us, but that introduced plants do not,” says Stephanie.

The native grasses have a huge root system that holds the dunes together, and they are shaped to collect wind-blown sand out of the air.

Sustainability

“With the weeds there, there’s nothing to solidify the sand back into the dune, to tie the sand down, and that’s why we get problems in the urban environment.

“A few years ago you may remember the problems we had with sand across the road at the main beach there. Those issues have been eradicated by those leaf plots that we have planted along the beach there.

“What we are trying to do is make it self-sustainable.”

The weeds are being killed off with herbicide spray, as it is the most cost-effective method.

Machinery and equipment donations needed An opportunity to convert surplus plant and machinery into cash, or donate it for sale, is being offering to farmers and orchardists by Katikati Rotary Club, which is to hold an auction in February.

“This will be the first time in many years Rotary has organised a plant and machinery auction and it will provide a great opportunity to buy and sell equipment,” says Rotarian Rod Calver.

Upcoming auction

The club will sell machinery and equipment on behalf of vendors for a 15 per cent commission but also hopes to receive donations of surplus plant and machinery to sell to raise funds for community projects.

“The auction will be strictly for orchard and farm machinery, plant and equipment, large or small, but not household items or the kind of goods sold by the popular Lions Steptoe Auction in Katikati.”

Thanks to the support of Aongatete Packhouse, pick-up can be arranged from the Bay of Plenty or Waikato in the week before the auction and Rotary will take delivery of items too.

The sale will begin at 11am on Saturday February 16 at 43 Sharp Rd, just south of Katikati. Parking will be available at Fairview Golf Course across the road, which will also be holding an open home on the day.

Funds raised will assist Rotary’s continued support of the local community, including the Katikati Primary School and College.

“We may also use some funds to buy a defibrillator for the Katikati Police, who are often first on the scene of accidents or emergencies in this area.”

’Twas the night before Speedway, when all through the house, Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

The stock cars were stored in the garage with care, In hopes that their drivers soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of saloons cars danced in their heads.

Excitement is brewing for Baypark Speedway’s Christmas Meeting this Saturday, where a number of events hand-chosen for the festive occasion will take place.

Sixteen modified stock cars, including one from Christchurch, are lining up for the Baypark Modified Championships.

Speedway manager Roger Bailey says this class used to be the premier open wheel class, but has since been replaced by sprint cars.

“We started this again last year; it’s going to be a neat race.”

A sprint car invasion will take over the track, with international driver Ricky Logan, and round three and four of the La-Z-Boy Saloon Car Series are also taking place, with leading local drivers 274M Dan Corrin and

16M Steve Muir.

“Second and third are currently tied, so it’s going to be a tight race.”

Children enter for free this weekend and Tip Top will hand out 500 free ice creams to the small Speedway spectators.

“I hear a certain Christmas character is making an appearance too, but you’ll have to come along to see what happens there.”

Roger is expecting a great Christmas crowd on Saturday, with races beginning at 6.30pm.

As the world spirals ever further towards terminal weirdness and Christmas races towards us at an alarming speed, I find myself increasingly reaching for the eggnog.

Actually, eggnog is a terrible Christmas drink, despite its great name. The name is so good that you just want to cuddle up to it like a warm blanket but, in reality, it’s basically a hardcore adult version of chocolate milk. Except without the chocolate.

Or milk.

In place of the milk you have cream, and in place of the chocolate you have rum or bourbon. Rum is the

English choice while American’s plonk for bourbon. The aristocracy prefer brandy. Just add a lethal dose of sugar and you have the unhealthiest drink ever. The alcohol is probably the only thing in it that’s good for you.

Ban it I say

Why not? The alcohol bill is coming up soon and everyone’s already complaining that not enough stuff has been banned. Or perhaps Peter Dunne can add eggnog to the list of party pills and smokable synthetics that he’s frantically trying to eradicate. Send the eggnog down to the SPCA and they can do some animal testing on it.

(I have yet to understand why you would want to test party pills on animals – as Peter Dunne so “sensibly” suggests – when there is apparently a never-ending supply of willing human volunteers. Why should the animals have all the fun?)

But the urge to ban stuff just doesn’t seem to go away. It’s enough to make me long for my youth, growing up in the wild hills of Turkmenistan.

They’re good at banning things in Turkmenistan too. The late ruler, President Niyazov, banned beards. And opera. And ballet and circuses. And he banned newsreaders from wearing make-up on television. Peter Dunne would love it there...

Meanwhile, in everybody’s favourite communist paradise, Cuba, home of the Tango and Che Guevara posters, they have banned reggaeton. Officials have decided that its hip-thrusting mix of hip-hop, reggae and Latin beats is a threat to “proper” music.

A crackdown on reggaeton and other unnamed musical styles that are threatening the revolutionary country’s

traditional musical culture will punish artists and fine those who programme it, according to Cuban Music Institute boss Orlando Vistel Columbié.

“We are not just talking about reggaeton. There is vulgarity, banality and mediocrity in other forms of music too. On the one hand there are aggressive, sexually obscene lyrics that deform the innate sensuality of the Cuban woman, projecting them as grotesque sexual objects. And all that is backed by the poorest quality music.

Measures that have been adopted range from professional disqualification to the levying of severe sanctions against those who from official institutions encourage or permit these practices,” said Vistel. “We are in the process of purging music catalogues with the aim of eradicating practises that, in their content, stray from the legitimacy of Cuban popular culture.”

Good grief! Let’s only hope that the government here – or, God forbid, the local council – don’t hear about this.

For reggae (and possibly even reggaeton) is hitting The Bay at the end of the month.

Exodus line up

Papamoa’s Exodus Festival is back for a second time on New Year’s Eve and has a fantastic line-up in store for skanking fans. Herbs, Katchafire, 1814, Cornerstone Roots, David Grace, Paua, Sons of Zion and a plethora of others – there are around twenty acts in total, plus DJs – will be playing, kicking off at 12.30pm on 31 December and running through till about 1.30am in the new year. With tickets only $75 (available from Ticketek) how can you lose?

But, if you’re unable to get along then you might be interested in the warm-up preparty party, taking place at Brewer’s Bar on 30 December. This one runs from 3.00pm till 10.00pm and features L40, One Drop Nation, Unknown Peace, Soulovus, Natural Remedy and NLC. There is, of course, a pile of stuff happening as the year draws to a close but it is especially cool to see a big-scale festival.

For years there has been palpable paranoia about allowing such events to take place – it’s good to see things returning to a state where we can welcome 2013 with some great music. Just don’t take along any eggnog.

This time we’re in Civil War America (so recently co-opted by bloodsuckers in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), Hunter where returned soldier Edward Young documents the rising plague. He wanders unhappily around the south and has a generally miserable time. It’s very serious and long, while the Malick comment presumably refers to the vacuous voice-over.

Anarchic Scandinavian crime writer Jo Nesbo turns his hand to a film script with Jackpot , a delightfully twisted tale that opens with “hero” Oscar discovered beneath a “huge woman”, shotgun in hand, surrounded by corpses after a shoot-out in a strip club. With typical timing the topical tropes of The Campaign have disappeared for its belated release here.

But, though the US election may be over, the film still has plenty of funny moments. Will Ferrell and Zack Galifianakis play two idiots battling it out for a North Carolina congress seat. Ferrell is the entitled old-timer, Galifianakis the naïve half-wit chosen to challenge him.

The humour is broad and continual but sadly gentle given the real-life excesses American politics.

There’s plenty of fun to be had with the slanderous craziness of political advertising or the absurdity of campaign debates but this stays in very safe territory.

Sharing love of sea with kids As a child growing up in England the young Emma Richardson fell under the spell of a warm country halfway around the world with bountiful oceans and wonderful seas to explore.

These were the stories her father, Robert Andrucci, would share with her about his great memories from living here and expeditions with the Tauranga Dive Club.

Years later Emma has adopted Tauranga as her home and the seasoned marine biologist is sharing her love of the sea with a new generation, through a children’s book on marine science.

A mum herself, Emma has been frustrated by a lack of good children’s science books and is now doing her part to fill a gap.

The story is about a young girl, Ruby, who is listening to her father’s story about the sea creatures he saw as a scuba diver. Emma says the book is partly a tribute to her dad, who gave her love of the sea. Fittingly it uses photos her father took when diving.

“I’m excited about getting the book out there and am already working on two other books.”

Emma’s continuing to share her love for the unseen marine world on our doorstep in her next projects – a children’s book on seaweed and a more detailed book on the subject for adults. In keeping with Emma’s hope that children will use it to help them learn about the creatures in our seas, a waterproof version of the book is available for the beach. True hope instead of hopelessness In speaking about the conditions on the earth in these last days, Jesus states in Luke 21:26 that these are the days when “men’s hearts will fail them because of fear and the expectation of those things coming upon the earth”.

Wars, nuclear weapons, chemical warfare, health pandemics, climate change, depletion of the earth’s resources, financial meltdown, poverty, tsunamis, earthquakes, tornados, typhoons, floods, violence, lawlessness, the breakdown of society, the breakdown of the family unit and family values, and more! Isaiah 60:2 verse declares: “See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples.” No wonder we have a generation of young people who declare they have no hope and no vision for their future

because they don’t see this current world and the world system sustaining them until old age. Either, they say, we will wipe one another out, or the planet will be unable to sustain or support us.

Contrary to all logic and past and current experience, some still believe mankind will be able to find a way out of the increasingly dim situation the world is in. However, the Bible declares there is no hope outside of God and a vibrant, personal, committed relationship with Him. Ephesians 2:12 says unless we are saved through faith in Christ, we are “without hope and without God in the world”. Job 8:13 says that “the hope of the godless shall perish”.

Proverbs 10:28 declares that “the expectation of the wicked (those who are out of harmony with God) comes to nothing”.

Scripture makes it clear however, that there is hope for those who are

in Christ, through new birth. The psalmist declares in Psalm 71:5: “For You are my hope; O Lord God, You are my trust from my youth and the source of my confidence”. Paul speaks in Romans 15:13 about “the God of hope”.

Dear reader, if you are one who is greatly anxious about the things that are happening in the world and in our nation today – if you are in fear because of the circumstances you find yourself in – there is hope in God alone! He is the God who cannot fail.

With Him, all things are possible.

He is the God of hope for those who have come to Him through salvation in Christ. We would love to show you God’s pathway to salvation and to a relationship with the God of hope.

It was a great event. Lots of people and all sorts of floats. But to me, noticeably absent was a float with the nativity scene, usually so prominent and taking pride of place in Christmas parades. Not one single float with Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus. Sadly the very reason for the season was not there!

Christmas is not “Happy holiday season”, it is not all about celebrating family and the “xmas” season. If that’s all we think Christmas is, then we’ve missed the main event. We’ve missed the reason for the season.

Many celebrate Christmas by thinking about the baby Jesus, about angels, Nativity scenes and Children’s presentations, about carol singing, Christmas trees and decorations, holidays and sunny weather, beaches and bikes, togs and towels. Christmas is about these things but it is all about far, far, far more than just those things, as great as they all are. Christmas, really, is about Jesus.

He is the reason for the season! What’s the point of a celebration if we don’t remember the real point of the celebration in the first place?

The truth is He is the First and Last,

the Beginning and the End! He is the keeper of Creation and the Creator of all!

He is the Architect of the universe and The Manager of all times. He always was, He always is, and He always will be... Unmoved, Unchanged, Undefeated, and never Undone! He was bruised and brought healing! He was pierced and eased pain! He was persecuted and brought freedom!

He was dead and brought life! He is risen and brings power! He reigns and brings peace!

The world can’t understand Him, armies can’t defeat Him, schools can’t explain Him, and leaders can’t ignore Him. Herod couldn’t kill Him, the Pharisees couldn’t confuse Him, and the people couldn’t hold Him! Nero couldn’t crush Him, Hitler couldn’t silence Him, the New Age can’t replace Him, and Oprah can’t explain Him away!

Yes, Christmas is about remembering and celebrating that first Nativity, when God loved mankind so much that He sent His Son, Jesus.

Christmas is about Christ… Jesus Christ coming to earth to live and die for you and me. Now that’s something worth celebrating!
