This is because the Rabbit has been fully engrossed in some renovation and construction projects in the last week.

And before you know-alls start making cliched jokes about hitting my thumb with the hammer, let me put the record straight by declaring that at no time did the hammer strike the thumb.

The damage was done by the door jamb.

Now we know why they call it that.

Only a complete amateur would hit his thumb with the hammer. I have, however, managed to strike a kneecap, shoulder blade, a passing cockroach, light socket; and thumped a hole clean through a tin of very old paint. That could be the start of my abstract art career.

piece on the top (roof) and four walls, there’s a sixth wall, which goes on the ground. Sometimes called the “floor”.

Apparently this holds everything up and should be built first. This is contrary to my ideal approach, which would be to work from the top down, as that is how a news story is constructed. Apparently not in the building trade.

And you’d think the walls would be built after the floor, but no. We take a shortcut here and build a roof. It sort of stands on these bits of wood, known in the Building Code as ‘sticks’. Actually I made that up, they’re studs or nogs or scroggin, or some other complicated term which sounds more like a racist slur. So we’ll stick with sticks.

Pushing the boat out Overheard a funny comment this week, a couple debating whether it was a good idea to have a gondolier up the Mount.

I pointed out that it would be mighty hard poling to get that boat up the hill, but the ride down the other side would be spectacular. It’s just an idea (Rogers pushing the boat out here), but we could become the Venice of the South Pacific, only with better pizza and fatter mosquitoes.

Possibly these people meant gondola, but who knows. We don’t need either.

We reckon the Mount is pretty fine as it is, and a fair swag of the population, including the iwi owners, think the same. Walk up it or around it, get some exercise, fresh air and enjoy the relatively unspoiled beauty of the hill and the view.

The Bay is an amazing place to live and visit, as indicated by growth in the cruise ship business, up 12 per cent on last year.

According to our tourism boss Rhys Arrowsmith, that’s 25,000 more crew and passengers and a $45m boost into the local economy.

This summer season’s ďŹ nale of night time ďŹ lms on the waterfront will have a unique spin with organisers arranging the cinema experience to be powered by bikes.

Coinciding with March’s Sustainable Backyards month, the Night Owl Cinema will have a row of 10 cycles lined up to power the March 13 screening.

The bikes are open to the public to pedal, and organiser Kim Cleland is hoping ďŹ lm-goers will get behind the initiative and give it a go. “We’ll take any willing volunteers – you can do any amount of time.â€?

The idea comes from previous cycle powered events and while the bikes themselves will be sourced locally, specialised power units are being trucked up

from Christchurch organisation GapďŹ ller. “The pedalling action is what makes the power for the projector and PA system.â€?

Kim is hoping the event will show people exactly how much energy goes into providing power for everyday sources, such as watching a ďŹ lm. “Showing how much power goes into something gives us a bit more of an understanding of what it takes to power our homes and cities. Seeing how much power goes into powering a movie – and getting people to associate that with their bikes.â€?

Its sustainable focus ties in with the evening’s ďŹ lm Carving the Future’s theme of climate change.

The New Zealand documentary produced by ďŹ lmmaker Guy Ryan explores a group of young New Zealanders taking action against climate change. “Climate change is an issue I am really passionate about so I

thought it may be a nice mirroring of those two things and a great way to ďŹ nish off the season of Night Owl Cinema.â€?

Kim says the inaugural Night Owl Cinema season has been a success and will be back next summer, but potentially in a different location. “We deďŹ nitely want to do it again, we have had a heap of fun doing it – and it’s a whole range of people from young families to the older generation.â€?

The ďŹ nal Night Owl Cinema is on March 13 at Tauranga’s waterfront opposite Starbucks.

Police probe Bayfair fight video

Tauranga Police are investigating a video showing a group of young people fighting and verbally abusing a motorist in the carpark of Bayfair Shopping Centre.

Two videos, uploaded online and on Facebook, show a group of more than 20 youths outside the centre where a number are sparring with each other.

Western Bay of Plenty Police Area Commander, Inspector Clifford Paxton says police are aware of the video and are working to identify the people involved.

Bay of Plenty MP to retire

Bay of Plenty MP and Minister of Health and State Owned Enterprises Tony Ryall will retire from politics at the next election.

The minister announced his resignation from politics at this year’s general election at a press conference at 9.30am on Thursday.

Truck fire near Papamoa

A trailer fault is believed to have caused the fire that destroyed the rear container of a truck and trailer and delayed traffic for more than three hours on State Highway 2, near Papamoa this week.

The Priority Logistics truck and trailer unit was travelling from Matata towards Mount Maunganui when it caught fire near Bell Road about 4pm Tuesday.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the fire caused significant traffic delays in the area.

Some motorists reported traffic was backed up to Kiwi360 before the road was clear about 7pm.

The shipping container damaged in the fire contained paper towels.

Making dream sail a reality A group of Bay of Plenty women are training their way to be the first female-only crew to enter the Auckland to Tauranga Race at Easter and need sponsorship to make their dream sail.

Skipper Rhonda Ritchie, from Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club says team members Leslie Goddard, Laura Vonk, Jackie Holt, Aimee Ritchie and Delwyn Hodgson, travel from across the region to train weekly in Tauranga for the race, which lasts as long as 24 hours.

Rhonda, who owns the team’s boat Smudge, says the 120 nautical mile race begins 10am on April 17 under Auckland’s Harbour Bridge to finish at A Beacon, outside Tauranga Harbour.

“Our aspiration is to be the first allwomen crew to compete in this race.

“Being totally in charge of the boat adds a new dimension – we’re not content to just complete the race, but aim to be competitive.”

Rhonda says they women are passionate about sailing.

“Together we give each other courage

to push our personal boundaries and achieve our dreams.

“By taking on this race, we hope to encourage other women to take charge of their destiny and get out there and give it a go; whatever their dreams are.”

In January, Smudge competed in the Tauranga-Whitianga race with the all-women crew. Now the ladies need sponsorship to enter the Farr 9.2 fibre glass keeler, built in 1986. “There is a big jump in the cost to prepare a boat,” says Rhonda.

Their wish-list includes safety equipment and inspections, a new sail wardrobe – replacing a genoa and spinnaker and adding a gennaker – internet data to run applications, sailing shirts, travel costs for bow woman Laura, who moved to Wellington mid-campaign, and nutrition supplements.

One of the two sick Norfolk pine trees on Marine Parade is to be felled next month, while the other sick tree will be left during winter to see if it can pull through, says Tauranga City Council arborist Richard Conning.

A number of the Norfolk pines along Marine Parade and in Pilot Bay were seen to be ailing last July. Rotorua-based research company Scion was called in and identified a soil pathogen phytophthora multivora as being a possible cause.

A treatment trial was carried out in October, with the results reviewed in January.

Richard says the trial doesn’t seem to have had any effect, with the two worst effected trees continuing to decline.

“One of those trees is going to have to come out,” says Richard. “The other one, we are seeking some independent advice around that; and how we can manage those trees long term.

“The second tree; that’s has still got a fighting chance. We’ll be looking to monitor that tree between now and next November. Public safety will be our highest priority, so we’ll be

Papamoa woman’s lucky win

A lucky feeling left a Papamoa Beach woman $200,000 better off after winning a share of Lotto First Division in last Saturday’s live Lotto draw.

The winner doesn’t normally buy Lotto tickets but thought she would try her luck in last weekend’s draw.

“I usually only buy tickets for the big draws.

So when I saw Powerball was at $26 million I decided to pick up a ticket,” says the woman, who wishes to remain anonymous.

The winning ticket was sold at Papamoa Beach Four Square.

Mount’s ailing Norfolk pine soon to be felled

Near drowning at Main Beach

A visiting teenage boy was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition after being pulled from the surf at Mount Maunganui Main Beach this week.

The 19-year-old was swimming in the ocean opposite Commons Avenue when he got into trouble in what are being described as “calm conditions” about 50metres offshore at 2.30pm on Tuesday. He was listed as in a stable condition on Wednesday.

monitoring it to make sure that it won’t be losing any limbs off it, or that sort of thing.”

The tree to be felled will be removed by TCC contractor Arborcare. An arborist will climb up and remove the branches, and then work on the trunk from the top, in sections.

“They may use a crane just for efficiency, or they may not,” says Richard, who is in the process of sourcing a replacement tree.

Scion will be doing some more foliage testing to see if they’ve missed anything, says Richard. “It’s pretty hard to pin down exactly what’s causing ill health in trees.”

Built from base up The father of a young Tauranga woman who passed away last year is putting the final touches on a motorcycle he’s built in her memory, to be auctioned for charity this weekend.

Jesse Gibb-Kimber was born with a congenital heart defect and was not expected to live past her fifth birthday – but made it to 21 years old, passing away in Auckland Hospital in October.

Father Mark (Slope) Kimber has been building a 1974 Triumph Trident 150v from a bare frame for the last two months and will auction it off at Brewers Bar in Mount Maunganui on Saturday.

It’s been a struggle for Mark to find parts for the T150V, and two months is a “very short time” but he says he’ll have it finished for the auction at 6.30pm.

“Trying to build a bike from a bare frame that’s 40 years old, when you can’t go into any shop and buy parts for, to do that in two months is a near-impossible task – but it’ll be ready.” All proceeds made will go to Bay of Plenty @Heart – which provides support and aid to children with heart defects in the region. While he can’t estimate what he has spent on the project, Mark says if

he could he would pay $15,000 for the motorcycle.

“I have a minimum $12,000 loan that I would buy it at, but if it goes over that I’ll be happy.”

A number of people have donated parts, with a plaque at Brewers Bar displaying their names.

Jesse’s brother Luke and his partner have helped Mark complete the project – which has taken many sleepless nights – but is all worth it.

Jesse was diagnosed at 18 months old with pulmonary hypertension and an aortic abnormality.

Despite her prognosis, Jesse lived a full life and was always positive, he says.

“Pauline and I knew we had special children from the outset.

“Even in death she never let her medical problem win.”

The auction is part of a full night planned in memory of Jesse at Brewers Bar on Saturday. There will be live bands and a special guest MC from 3pm with the auction at 6.30pm..

Sarah, a Tauranga Hospital junior paediatric registrar, has been juggling her full time position at the hospital, a “poor, neglected” boyfriend and her training regime – no easy feat.

After moving from Wales about two years ago, Sarah has taught herself how to swim, an essential skill to complete the 3.8km swim, 180km bike and 42.2km run.

“I’m aiming for sub 12-hours.

I think a lot of the nurses said they will support me if I do sub 12-hours.

“You have just got to keep going.

When you are exhausted you just have to think ‘Do I need to get out there and do it?’ It’s pretty hard.”

Tauranga’s Sarah Gibby is preparing to leave her blood, sweat and tears on the Ironman NZ race course in the added hope of making wishes come true and bringing a smile to sick children’s faces.

Labour leaders in town Labour Party leader David Cunliffe and members of the party’s shadow cabinet will visit Tauranga on Monday to hear from community members on the region.

Organised by Tauranga Labour candidate Dr Rachel Jones, the members of the opposition will arrive in town early Monday for a full day of meetings with business leaders, council and iwi.

Historic day at Brain Watkins Sunday is ‘jazz in the garden’ day at Brain Watkins House with a fundraiser planned for the Tauranga Historical Society.

Tauranga musician Marion Arts will be providing a musical accompaniment for visitors to the 1880s Kauri villa, which provides a glimpse into the lives of the former owners.

Now owned by the Tauranga Historical Society, the villa was built by Joseph Brain built in 1881. It became the Brain Watkins house when his youngest daughter Elva married Willie Watkins at aged 72. Elva left the house to the historical society in 1979.

The building is open for tours and music this Sunday from 2pm. Entry is $4.

Harris embracing Chiefs Te Puke’s Nathan Harris is more than comfortable with the Chiefs’ distinctive red, black and yellow across his chest, but is not getting ahead of himself after finally making it onto the Super Rugby scene.

The 21-year-old is one of the fresh faces in the Chiefs squad this season as they forge their way towards a third consecutive Super Rugby title, predicted as one of the more hotly contested competitions in the 19 year history.

With the two senior hookers Mahonri Schwalger and Hika Elliot on the long term injury list, Harris has been upgraded from a training role to a major playing position, something he’s grabbing with both hands.

Speaking to The Weekend Sun before tomorrow’s clash with the Highlanders in Hamilton, Harris believes the side is well equipped to grind out another win in front of their first home crowd of the season.

The side continues to prove pundits wrong, rising to a new level of intensity despite being decimated with 13 injured one week in.

“The boys are pretty excited for the first home game of the season.

Widening the field Triathletes are primed to end the Eves Triathlon series with a bang, by eyeing up a smooth transition in the final leg of the trio of events – the Coronation Classic.

And Sunday’s event, round three of the annual series, is looming as a bumper morning for all athletes, with entries continuing to out-do previous records.

The Coronation Classic, is part of the trio of triathlons attracting competitors throughout the Bay to compete in the sprint distance of 750m swim, 16km bike, 5km run; and the super sprint distance of 375m swim, 8km bike, 2.5km run.

Competitors will swim in Pilot Bay, bike around the Mount Maunganui industrial area before finishing with a run from Coronation Park, around the Mauao Base Track, and back.

Team Shorebreak director Sheryl McLay is confident a big turnout is expected for the finale, with high hopes competitor numbers will crack the 200-mark – the first time in the series’ history.

Sheryl says a major difference in popularity can be put down to the event doubling as the Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Senior Triathlon Championships – a first for the series.

“We have had some good entries from Aquinas and Te Whanau-A-Apanui from Te Kaha, and the local schools have been pretty good,” says Sheryl.

Broken down into Under 19, Under 16 and Under 14, school pupils will race across a variety of distances, helping to put the sport back on the secondary school calendar.

Aquinas College sports coordinator Hikitia Gallagher is expecting a strong contingent from the college’s triathlon group, confirming she knows of three who’ve already entered.

Hikitia says the sport is growing in popularity at the college; and the event is a perfect way of helping give the competitors something to strive and aim for during the season, for both themselves and the college.

“It’s a growing sport and our teacher in charge Mr Banbry [Aquinas triathlon coach Shem Banbry] is involved in triathlons himself, so that always helps for our students to understand the bits and pieces and intricacies of the event,” says Hikitia.

“It’s good to know that it’s using the same resources that way, and not doubling up.”

The Coronation Classic starts at 8am on Sunday.

The village hosted a fundraising breakfast raising $1000 for St John, with an extra $500 donated by the social committee.

Social committee member Pam Cotterill says the club is presenting the donation to St John at their monthly dinner tonight.

“There are a lot of retirement villages here and we thought that if we showed that we did it then maybe some of the others will take up the challenge.”

Clowning around for children This weekend’s Children’s Day is all about ‘clowning around’ – however the message behind the event is a serious one.

Children’s Day is on this Sunday, March 2, at Historic Village where a free, circus-themed day of fun is planned for Tauranga families.

More than 30 activities are set to entertain, ranging from magic shows and pony rides, to crafts, clowns and fire trucks. This year also includes a toddler zone and prizes for the best

dressed. This is the 12th Children’s Day organised by Tauranga City Council, and communications advisor Catherine Connell is expecting more than 5000 children and parents to join in.

“Last year we had about 5000, and the event just keeps getting bigger and bigger.”

Children are encouraged to dress up in the circus theme – which was chosen for its simplicity and fun.

“We didn’t want people having to spend lots of money, so this is a fun and easy theme.”

Behind the clowns, gymnastics and magic tricks is a serious message – the importance of spending time as a family.

“It’s just about spending time with your children and having fun together. That’s the message.”

Local Government: Why should it matter?

During the next few weeks, this column will talk about local government – why should it matter? What should we want from it? And how should we get it?

At the moment, it’s almost open season on local government. Talk around the Bay of Plenty is about amalgamation.

Not whether it will happen, but when and how. Most people think rates are too high, and councils aren’t delivering – think Tauranga’s stormwater.

Government tells us bigger councils will be more efďŹ cient, and result in better services. Recent changes to Local Government Law are supposed to make amalgamation easier. But who should decide?

Primary sector exports continue to boom Last week, Minister for Primary Industries Nathan Guy announced the latest primary sector ďŹ gures show primary sector exports this year look set to rise by nearly $5 billion more than originally forecast.

Log prices have increased by 30 per cent in the second half of 2013 and forestry ďŹ rms are expected to take advantage of higher international prices by increasing harvest volumes. This will lead to an additional growth in returns of $800 million in 2013/2014.

This is good news for Tauranga, as the Port of Tauranga handles most of the log exports from the Bay of Plenty and Waikato.

Fishy business

The boss says that since our boating magazine, ‘Waterline’, has launched online, we have to spend more time fishing and less time chasing our tails.

So he bundled me onto the boat again, and we set off on the high seas on another ‘research’ mission.

Now being a water dog, trips on the boat are always fun. We regularly get to run around on beaches and sandbars and chase seagulls. Playing in the surf is always a bit of fun, so I don’t mind the odd trip out on the water.

But there are some rules. No jumping off the boat. And no eating the bait.

We have to wear these floaty shirts most of the time. Even the pooch.

Mine has a nifty handle on the top, in case I need plucking from the sea, or help in and out of the dinghy.

Being a nosey bitch, I have to personally inspect any fish coming aboard.

It’s always really exciting when the reel screams, the boss screams; and there’s

nearly always a massive tangle of nylon that makes the back of the boat look more like the ladies knitting circle than a serious fishing boat.

The cost of housing affordability My friend lives in a tiny, uninsulated cottage in central Hamilton and pays about $200 rent for his room. I’m amazed I pay a lot less rent for an apartment close to NZ’s most iconic beach – Mount Maunganui.

As the city grows, my generation will need to re-evaluate what’s most important. We can’t continue to stretch the size of the city, as it will come at a cost. It will cost our economy if we build houses on our productive rural land, as the primary sector will continue to be backbone of our economy. It will cost us in having to provide more infrastructure;

for example, roads, pipes, reserves etc. It may also cost us our lifestyles if we follow Auckland’s model of suburban sprawl, causing high traffic congestion. The relative ease of getting around our city is something we need to protect as our population grows.

Housing affordability will be a key issue for this year’s government elections.

However, I believe the government is sending out mixed messages to councils on this issue.

Managing potential risk

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council is inviting residents to have their say about how councils should manage the potential impacts of natural hazards, such as earthquakes, floods, tsunami or geothermal eruptions, in the region.

BOPRC regional planner Martin Butler says everyone is invited to attend the ‘Living with risk’ community sessions in Tauranga, Rotorua, Whakatane, Paengaroa and Opotiki during the week of March 10.

“A natural disaster could happen in the Bay at any time. Fewer than 27 per cent of us are adequately prepared for that, so it’s important to think carefully about how we can

minimise the damage of such an event to our lives and livelihoods,” says Martin.

“We’re currently reviewing that policy and we need information from the community to do so.

Information gathered from the community sessions will help us to ensure a good balance between individual and shared responsibility in the policy.

The warm weather continues, even if officially we’ve reached the end of summer.

The temperatures have seen me staying undercover during the hot parts of the day.

The garden keeps producing tomatoes, peppers and courgettes and lots of weeds, while the cicadas are getting louder.

But not everything is going that well, as the high humidity has caused some problems with the microgreens in the form of mould and fungus attacking some varieties.

Diligence and increased air circulation have helped, as well as organic mould inhibitors – but really, a change to less humid weather is the best solution.

Meanwhile, the cicada noise and baking hot days take me back to the joys of eating cold, cooked vegetable dishes, drowning in olive oil, in the tavernas and restaurants in Greece.

Ladera, briam, skordalia – interesting names for vegetarian dishes that were so welcome after a swim in the ocean and a wander down the beach and a nice glass of wine.

Back in the real world, I gather up some courgettes, capsicums, large tomatoes and heirloom cherries, along with some fresh mint, basil and some red rascal potatoes – ready to create this week’s dish.

Retreating from the midday heat is a great time to prepare and cook dinner, and slow-baking brings out the flavours of summer you can eat warm but also taste awesome cold.

Mediterranean ladera 6 large potatoes 8-10 courgettes 1 large red onion 2-3 gloves garlic, crushed 4-6 ripe, firm tomatoes 3-4 capsicums ¾ cup extra virgin olive oil

½ cup chopped mint ½ cup chopped parsley Freshly-ground black pepper Sea salt flakes Optional: A few cherry tomatoes Feta for garnish

Method Slice all of the vegetables as thin as you can, and keep separate using a kitchen mandolin or slicer. Place the sliced potatoes and courgettes in different bowls. Add the chopped parsley and seasoning to the potatoes and half of the olive oil, which has the freshly-crushed garlic added to it; then mix well. Add the chopped mint to the courgettes, plus the seasoning and the rest of the olive oil.

In a large baking dish, arrange the slices, starting with the potatoes, then a layer of the courgettes followed by some sliced tomatoes, capsicums and onions. Spread these out more thinly than the potatoes or courgettes.

Repeat the process, pressing down firmly with each layer so the oil soaks into every layer.

Bake at 150 degrees Celsius for four hours. Remove from the oven and test to see if all layers are cooked right through. Serve warm, or cold once its set. Garnish with semi-dried cherry tomatoes and crumbles of feta.

In the last couple of weeks along The Strand there has been an obvious increase in the number of cruise ship passengers visiting the wide variety of restaurants, cafes and bars.

A huge thank you to those responsible for getting them down here, away from the Mount and Rotorua, to see what Tauranga has to offer.

Now even I know you can only eat or drink so much while visiting new destinations, so what can we offer as well?

We have the waka and the beautiful Maori carvings which represent the local history, but what about our present for the future?

Something that will give even more incentive to visit The Strand for local, national and international visitors.

I believe the Hairy Maclary sculpture project achieves this goal, because as children we’ve read the books, and my beautiful children know all the stories, and their future grandchildren will enjoy them.

To have your photo taken next to Muffin McClay or Scarface Claw on The Strand in Tauranga, while clasping a crumpled and loved family edition, could be the start of a national literary trail, or simply a memory to be savoured in the Bay. Let’s support them for our future Tauranga.

Canadians Ed Klassen and his wife Kathy haven’t seen a full winter in 13 years.

The part-time Papamoa residents are two of a large Canadian community migrating to Tauranga every summer – lapping up the Bay’s sunshine and cruising the golf courses.

Ed, 64, believes it’s a growing trend, boosted by familiarities between Kiwis and Canadians, the generosity of Tauranga residents, and the region’s “stunning” weather.

“This is our 13th year, every year we come over usually from midJanuary for about three months.”

The couple first came over to meet their son-in-law’s family, and were immediately taken with the country. “We thought ‘Hey, this is great’. The seasons are opposite to ours, so why not chase the sun?

“It’s contagious isn’t it? We tell a few people and the next thing you know there’s a hoard of us.”

Ed is amazed at how well Kiwis are aligned with Canadians, and says he always feels welcome.

“The weather, the water, the culture here is so much like ours too.”

Ed and Kathy retired at age 50, after successfully operating a number of businesses.

where they stay each summer, and return home in April for the remainder of the year.

“We had a pretty busy life early on, so we thought ‘Hey, let’s get it at the back end’. And that’s what we’re doing – we’re playing.”

As well as clocking up hundreds of hours on the golf course, Ed is a devout Rotarian and does a lot of community work through Mount Maunganui Rotary.

This includes a small exchange programme, where Rotarians’

grandchildren visit Ed and Kathy in Canada and they send students to New Zealand in return.

The couple also completes other community volunteer work.

“We plug into the community quite a bit because we enjoy that.”

Ed also organises the Canomu Golf Tournament – an annual event held at Omanu Golf Club where Canadians play off against local golfers. Ed says it’s his way of thanking the region.

The goodies of going organic Hardy’s Organic in Papamoa is encouraging residents to eat organically – supporting new research boasting the benefits of organic fruit and vegetables.

A 10-year study comparing organic tomatoes with standard produce found they had almost double the quantity of antioxidants called flavonoids, which help to prevent high blood pressure and reduce the likelihood of heart disease and strokes.

Alyson Mitchell, a food chemist who led the research at the University of California, believes flavonoids can also help stave off some forms of cancer and dementia.

Alyson says it has previously been hard to make comparisons between organic and conventionally-grown produce because of difficulties in comparing soil quality, irrigation practices and the handling of harvested produce.

There’s a little bad news from Papamoa Lions this week.

Our new storage shed, built recently by members, behind the opshop at St Paul’s Church in Dickson Rd was seriously damaged by fire in the early hours of February 15.

Most of the contents were destroyed. This includes fridges, freezers, banners, trophies, records etc. It appears an electrical fault may have been the cause.

Supplies for our caravan at the plaza market will still be available on an as-needed basis, so the caravan will continue to operate as before.

In other words, with Papamoa Lions Club Community activities, it’s business as usual.

Popular biscuits go on sale Fans of the iconic Girl Guide biscuits are in for a treat this weekend, when the popularflavour treat goes on sale.

From March 1-31, Girl Guides will be selling all three flavours – original, chocolate and choc-minis – of the bis-

cuits, as part of a national fundraising campaign for Guiding New Zealand.

As a registered charity, Mount Coastal District coordinator Janet Reekie says GirlGuiding New Zealand relies on the girls, and their parents and leaders, to help sell biscuits that make-up more than 55 per cent of its annual revenue.

“This year we are encouraging girls to go door-to-door selling, as there have been a lot of people saying they have missed seeing the girls visiting,” says Janet.

“The girls will be in Girl Guiding uniforms and have an official Girl Guiding Biscuit sticker on their uniform when they call in.”

Janet says 2000 cartons will be on sale in Tauranga, Otumoetai, Bethlehem, Welcome Bay, Katikati, Mount Maunganui, Papamoa and Te Puke areas.

Bay of Plenty Girl Guides will also be selling the biscuits in Bayfair Shopping Centre during the first three weekends of March.

The donation continues after an initial $30,000 funding grant from the organisation.TECT chair Michael Cooney is impressed with Creative Tauranga’s vision for the project, and the organisation’s focus and drive to achieve a truly unique legacy for Tauranga City.

TECT’s $70,000 offer will lapse if the project is not fully completed by the end of this year.

A little, big day out Young children will ďŹ ll Memorial Park on Friday, March 7, as they celebrate good, clean fun for the Little Kids’ Big Day Out. The free event, from 9.30am-1pm, is run by Western Bay of Plenty Playcentre Association as part of Playcentre Awareness Week from March 3-8.

WBOPPA president Kaye Hubner says each year the Little Kids’ Big Day Out has a different theme, with Sunday’s being ‘Good, clean fun’.

This is to encourage the idea of sustainability in children and parents, with ‘clean’ activities planned throughout the day.

Clean fun includes face painting, bubbles, music, collaging, storytelling and puppets. And a sausage sizzle is on at 12pm.

Kaye says anyone is invited to join in on the occasion.

Western Bay of Plenty Playcentre Association has 13 centres from Katikati to Pongakawa. During the week, the centres will hold local events with a focus on sustainability and strengthening community.

Children catch the big one Whether it’s chasing a rabbit or catching a snapper – parents are being encouraged to take their children hunting and ďŹ shing next month.

Te Puna Hunting and Fishing Club is hosting its annual Take a Kid Hunting and Fishing competition, which encourages children to “get out there and give it a go� with their parents.

The competition starts with a brieďŹ ng at Te Puna’s Top Shot Bar from 6pm on March 14, and ďŹ nishes on March 16. The event is open to children aged 15 and under to go hunting for rabbits, possums, hares and magpies – or ďŹ sh in the Tauranga Harbour for snapper, kahawai, trevally, herrings, spotties, piper and eels.

Fish must be caught by rod or hand-line in the Tauranga Harbour only, while eels can be caught in any Tauranga waterway by rod, line or trap. Game must be despatched humanely and legally – and

When your toddler bites Biting is a very common behaviour among young children; so parents, you are not alone. The good news is there is a lot parents and caregivers can do to reduce biting.

There are a number of reasons why toddlers bite, and it’s usually related to coping with challenges or fulďŹ lling a need.

For example, your child may be biting to express frustration, communicate a need for personal space, or to satisfy oral stimulation.

Often, the lack of language skills necessary for expressing feelings such as anger, frustration, or even tiredness, are a factor when a child bites.

Trying your best to understand the underlying cause of the biting will help develop an effective response. Try to anticipate when a bite might occur; and

if you see your child might be on the verge of biting, you can try some of the following strategies: Distract your child with a book or toy; or suggest how your child might handle the situation by giving them the words to use to express themselves, for example: “Stop it, I don’t like it�.

Offer your child something he can bite safely, while telling them: “If you need to bite, you can bite the teething ring�.

Sharing is one of the most common triggers for biting.

Suggesting ways to share can provide your child with the language and support to reduce the tension and help to shift your child’s attention.

While biting behavior is extremely trying for parents, the stage does not last forever. By age three or three-and-a-half, children have usually acquired the language and social skills to deal with their emotions and play safely alongside their friends.

Paddling police on Kaituna River Today, police from across the North Island are donning wetsuits and taking up paddles to compete in the seventh annual New Zealand Police Association Raft Race on the Kaituna River.

Event organiser sergeant Aaron Holloway, from Rotorua, is expecting 160 police to compete in what has become known as one of the

largest police sporting events.

Thirty-six teams of four people will compete in the whitewater rafting on a 1.2km stretch of the Kaituna River, which includes seven sets of Grade 3 rapids with names like The Abyss and Boiling Pot. The police competitors will also need to navigate three waterfalls –

one of which is the world’s highest commercially-rafted waterfall, just to reach the start line.

There will be six whitewater rafting heats and two semi-finals held throughout the day (February 28), with the finals expected to take place between 5pm and 6pm.

Tauranga Eastern L Summer progress update and focus for 2014 Great weather over the summer means good progress has been made on the Tauranga Eastern Link (TEL).

The focus for the project in 2014 includes; the construction of the Parton Road bridge and the Domain Road interchange, completion of the drainage and mowing boat culverts, continued construction of pavement and landscaping.

The project site has been a hive of activity since the last update in October 2013, with a number of milestones reached. These included the traffic switches between Te Maunga and Mangatawa, the TEL family open day, the completion of a further two of the seven bridges, the re-opening of Maketu Road, the re-alignment of Te Tumu Road and pavement construction between Domain Road and Bell Road.

Construction of the first of three lightweight fill embankments started in November 2013.

The public got to see first-hand the work undertaken over the past three years and were able to drive down a section of the new road to the Kaituna River bridge.

Pavement construction

Construction of the TEL was able to be brought forward due to the community’s support to toll the road. Construction started in November 2010 and is on schedule for a late 2015 completion. The TEL is the largest state highway project in the Bay of Plenty and is recognised by the government as one of the seven roads of national significance.

The pavement (or road) construction journey on TEL is well underway.

The road is typically made up of four layers; the subgrade layer is sand or ash, the subbase layer is crushed local stone strengthened with cement, the basecourse layer is either crushed local stone strengthened with bitumen and cement or structural asphalt and the final surface layer is asphalt.

The highway is made up of two sections; the first six kilometres is upgrading the existing State Highway 2 from Te Maunga roundabout (near Baypark) to Domain Road in Papamoa; the remaining 17 kilometres is the tolled section which runs from Domain Road to Paengaroa, at the intersection of State Highway 2 (SH2) and State Highway 33 (SH33).

The electronic toll gantry will use cameras and sensors to identify a vehicle’s registration plate and assign the correct toll tariff. The toll tariff will depend on the size of the vehicle. For cars and light vehicles the toll will be between $2.30 and $2.50 and for trucks it will be between $5.50 and $6.00 (based on future CPI increases).

Internationally, the trend for toll roads is to move to free-flow electronic collection and centralised collection processes. The Transport Agency is focused on providing a number of options to make paying the toll easy. Details of the toll collection system, payment methods and final toll prices will be available later this year.

Much of the TEL already has the first layer in place and the second and third layers have been applied to sections of the road, between Te Maunga and the Kaituna River. With over 100 lane kilometres to be laid in 2014/15 the pavement crew will be kept busy.

Sport Bay of Plenty recreational advisor Jen Riley wants people to rediscover the joys of walking with 28 guided treks during March and something suited for all ages and fitness levels.

“The great thing about walking is that it’s an exercise we can all do – you don’t need any special equipment, it’s free and you can do it almost anywhere.”

Jen says with so many great walks in the region, including at SummerHill, the Papamoa Hills, the Mount and the Daisy Hardwick track.

“It can also be a good way to discover a new place while being active.”

On Tuesday a guided walk through the Otanewainuku reserve is being run by members of the trust helping attract native birdlife back to the area of virgin bush in Oropi.

Trust chairman Phil Wells says the Rimu Track is a mostly flat, pushchair-friendly, 45 minute walk and is a great introduction to the park, which also offers two harder tracks. The walk will leave the Otanewainuku carpark (Mountain Rd, Oropi) on

Artists’ invite to join festival ‘Artists in the Garden’ has long played a key role in the success of this national festival, held biennially in Tauranga. Artist registrations for the November 2014 festival are being taken now.

The planning stages for the ninth festival are in full swing, with a special information evening on March 20 at 6pm at the Incubator (Historic Village, 17th Ave) for artists wishing to learn more about exhibiting.

Festival director John Beech says the festival presents an opportunity for artists to reach an attentive national audience.

The New Zealand Garden and Art Festival brings together two of the world’s greatest creative pleasures, featuring exquisite art in inspiring garden settings.

“Having a solo exhibition in one of the 60 trail stops can be a very rewarding experience and great marketing exercise.”

A registration fee allows each artist to publish a photo of their work and a short biography in the festival directory. The artists are then free to sell and market their work and pay no commission.

“It's wonderful to see the return of one of the longest-participating artists Alec Roy,” says John. “His quirky, fun-filled and highly-collected ceramics will be much anticipated this festival.”

Alec, a Tauranga potter for more than 20 years, is returning to the wonderful urban garden of Heather Loughlin for the November festival.

Last year, Alec sculpted a two-metre tall moa out of copper. “I enjoy it. You can make something different everyday if you want to…and clay is nice to work with.”

Alec has only recently started creating pieces with metal, and jokes “it is just something different to play with”.

He first made a violin; then went on to create many string instruments, including a lyre, Celtic harps, violins, USA-style Appalachian dulcimers “for hillbilly folk music”, baritone ukuleles, hurdy gurdies, cellos, double bass and one of few Paraguayan harps in NZ. Doug only made the instruments for pleasure, not to sell, and still has a collection of about 12.

He’s never played one of his own creations. “I’m not musical – I’m a woodworker at heart.”

Long journey to freedom Tauranga man Carl Peterson is thrilled to launch his first book this weekend – a product that’s been 15 years in the making.

Since the 1970s Carl has been on an “outrageously improbable journey into the mind of God” which he believes has seen him cured of victimisation and cancer.

His journey has led Carl to believe that by revisiting and dealing with past hurts from childhood, people can cure themselves of disease and illness.

“All invasive illnesses are based on unresolved child functions.

“When you feel those moments well up in you, it’s your child self-calling across time for healing.

Many people run from this pain, but it’s the perfect chance to heal ourselves.”

Carl’s theory stems from being diagnosed with prostate cancer at Christmas in 2010.

Not wanting to go through chemotherapy, he set about eight months of “serious meditation”.

“My PSA [prostate specific antigen] levels kept going up, from five to 20 in eight months. My Carl Peterson, with his new book surgeon said if it got over ‘Church of the Perfect God’.

But in 2011 he visited a Maori healer who examined him and delivered news, which Carl believes changed his life.

“She said I had a lot of anger, which was no surprise to me.

But when I thought about it, I realised some of the background of that anger was from when I was younger; unresolved childhood trauma.”

Carl says once he realised the root of that anger, and processed the old feelings, he began feeling better.

“My next PSA tests started going down and over eight months I went back to normal.

“In early 2012 I got serious about finding out what cured me and why.”

He now believes pain is the gateway to healing – and this healing process will bring people as close to God as they can be. His journey is covered in full in his novel, which is being launched at Books A Plenty in Tauranga this weekend. Carl will also attend a book signing at 2pm on Sunday at Brain Watkins House.

The struggle to afford a healthy lifestyle Equity is one of Age Concern’s core principles. We want to see resources directed to help those older people who are financially disadvantaged and in greatest need.

This is election year and financially-disadvantaged elderly is an issue the Government must address.

The majority of New Zealanders are entering retirement relying on NZ Superannuation and a little extra income from other sources. Current trends, of house prices going upwards and home ownership going downwards, mean we’re likely to see an increase in the number of retirees who have ongoing commitments to rent or mortgage payments. But increases in basic living costs erode the value of NZ Superannuation.

Categories of expenditure identified as being necessary for basic healthy living are; adequate nutrition, physical activity, a healthy home, social connectedness, and healthcare, including care of eyes, ears and teeth, transport and personal hygiene. NZ Superannuation alone is not enough to support healthy living.

Urgent steps should be taken to give NZ Superannuation greater purchasing power. More regular CPI adjustments are needed; currently these run up to a year behind.

To solve this, quarterly CPI adjustments should be introduced.

plus regular dental and eye care. Increased funding to primary health care initiatives would also help.

Home insurance and home maintenance have become issues for older people too.

There is no neutral advisory service on home insurance; and so strategies must be found to make house maintenance more affordable and manageable for vulnerable homeowners.

Driving skills for the elderly A friendly, free refresher course for mature road users is again being offered by Age Concern, beginning Thursday, March 6.

Course coordinator Jim Wilson says the course is designed to keep drivers on the road for longer, by providing informative information in a social, supportive and interactive setting.

“In this relaxed atmosphere the older drivers can up-skill their driving, and gain the skills to know if it is time to consider giving up driving.”

Jim says the course ensures drivers are keeping their driving skills up-to-date and are aware of any changes to the Road Code, by focussing on a number of topics.

These include new road rules, intersection rules, roundabouts, car care and maintenance, and rural and urban driving.

Other aspects within these topics are passing lanes, weather conditions, eye sight and hearing checks, and medication.

Jim is also stressing the importance of regularly checking your car tyres to make sure they are safe.

Funds raised from the Tauranga event will go to both the local branch Bay of Plenty @Heart, which currently looks after more than 110 families, and the @Heart National Office.

About 12 teams are already registered, but organisers are adamant this year’s event will be the biggest yet.

In our business, we use competitiveness but with a marked difference.

We compare you against you. There is no comparison of you against another person.

There is no absolute reliance on a set of normative values, although these values are used as a guide.

to monitor themselves, rate themselves and see progression within themselves. There are some great smartphone apps now to make monitoring easy; and using these tools is a definite plus if you are managing your heart health.

Nutrition and exercise are two big areas under the heart health umbrella.

Teaching people how to see the progression of their food and exercise goals – to be competitive against themselves in these arenas – leads to lifestyle change that is sustained.

From an exercise point of view, ask yourself: How you feel when you are exercising? Is it easier or harder than last time?

Do you recover faster or slower? Did you go for longer than last time?

What was similar about this exercise session and the last?

Recording these, as well as objective measures like heart rate, builds a picture of you and what is ‘normal’ for you.

That normal then shifts as the changes you implement progress.

If we become competitive with ourselves, and make changes that relate to our individual situations, then we have a greater chance of achieving our goals.

What is happening in your heart arteries?

Last week we talked of how heart artery plaques start with cholesterol becoming trapped in the walls of blood vessels. Free radicals oxidise trapped cholesterol to a dangerous form and over time this can lead to artery blockages. It makes perfect sense then, that less circulating cholesterol translates to less becoming trapped.

But there is a lot more to it – especially the role of inflammation, low antioxidant levels, high homocysteine – and of course lifestyle factors, such as exercise and diet.

Cholesterol is transported by carriers called lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

LDL transports cholesterol from the liver, via blood, to individual cells to do all of the things cholesterol is needed for. High LDL is a risk to coronary arteries.

HDL transports cholesterol being returned back to the liver, so high HDL means your body is effective at recycling which it cannot use.

While statin cholesterol-lowering medications effectively reduce LDL cholesterol, they can cause side effects, such as muscle weakness, pain and general lethargy. This is mainly because they inhibit an enzyme needed to make Co enzyme Q10, which is essential for muscle energy. If you take statins, I recommend a specific CoQ10 called CoQSol® which rapidly lifts circulating CoQ10.

There are those who cannot tolerate statins and those with high cholesterol, but would rather use natural methods to balance cholesterol. For this group, studies show the most effective natural cholesterol balancer is a proprietary blend of citrus extract called PMFs

(polymethoxylated flavones) and palm fruit extract (tocotrienols).

Tocotrienols belong to the vitamin E family and can help to balance the liver enzymes responsible for cholesterol production. PMFs help balance the processes that make the LDL and HDL carriers for cholesterol.

Early detection of skin cancer is best Skin cancer is the most common cancer in New Zealand, and it is also the most treatable.

Like most malignancies, the earlier it is detected, the simpler the treatment and the better the prognosis. Early identification and appropriate intervention avoids potentially disfiguring complications and saves lives.

Early detection is dependent upon people presenting early to a doctor if they have any concerns about their skin. Most skin cancers are not painful and will grow insidiously, often being detected later than they could have been when there is a higher potential for complications.

Specialist dermatologists are medically-trained doctors, who have undergone an extensive additional training programme to equip them with expertise in the identification and management of all

skin disorders. This training provides the skill and experience necessary to diagnose all types of skin cancer and recommend the most appropriate treatment to optimise cure rates. Such treatments may include microscopically controlled excision of skin cancer (Mohs micrographic surgery), for certain facial skin cancers – some dermatologists have completed a further fellowship programme in skin cancer and reconstructive surgery for this – standard surgical excision, cryotherapy (freezing treatment), and topical treatment (with creams).

Specialist dermatologists are experts in examining all of your skin to identify the subtle early signs of skin cancer that you may not even be aware of.

When it comes to skin cancer, the earlier this is identified, the better the outlook.

Flag the election year promises Could it be the most important subject yet for an election year, or the ramblings of our leader who wants to change our flag.

Prime Minister John Key has overlooked the obvious in we can keep our flag and change it at the same time, just by adding one star.

That’s right, let’s just adopt the Australian flag Mr Key. We might as well, seen we are owned by them.

The banks, food chain, transport, soon our power supply, and many other companies, a lot of our network broadcasting and advertising on TV - just to name a few.

Not to mention our leader really has no say on Kiwis in Oz, nor how they treat Kiwi products over there, but they seem to want

our country to accept all of their exports here, while our own industry struggles.

Yep Mr Key this is the most important subject - change the flag to Australia’s and let’s close the gap between us, like your election promise from your first term.

Or you could be like the rest of the politicians and make new election year promises.

How about a tax cut, so you can raise it somewhere else, perhaps GST. Or you can claim ACC is running at a loss again and raise the levies we pay.

Underpass is over

Seven years ago, when we first moved to Welcome Bay, the underpass was muted. We thought what a great idea, as we travelled through a traffic backlog to work daily, and voted for TCC Councillors who supported the underpass.

But nothing happened, instead we got the roundabouts and lights.

These seem to be working, and at a great cost, despite not being the preferred solution.

Mike Baker’s letter ‘Route K: Questions still remain’ - I fully support it would be madness to spend all that money, at ratepayers’ expense, just to

move traffic to the oneway bridge at Turret Road. It’d just achieve the same congested result. Wouldn’t it be more cost-effective to spend the monies on the bridge, so the traffic could flow better?

And as for the massive pohutukawa trees, shutting out sun and view to all on Turret Rd, they could go and another lane and possibly another bridge could go in their place.

I’m a mere woman and just a taxpayer, so I don’t have the great mind of those who action these things - they’re just thoughts. But the underpass is over for me. Let’s move on.

Shedding more light on the Greens’ solar deal The Greens are promoting solar power plus long-term low interest loans as an election bribe. But its clear they haven’t discussed their ‘bonanza’ solution with solar installers.

Photo-voltaic panels cannot store electricity; and since most family’s maximum power consumption is in the evening (when the sun has lost energy), solar panels become ineffective.

To store solar power, a multibattery pack, plus a power inverter are required. So add an additional $4 to $10k for this to the touted $15k solar ‘deal’.

Bright council horizon: We attended a summer get-together of the Neighbourhood Residents Association. TCC councillor Steve Morris gave us a rundown of what he hopes to do as chair of TCC’s Community Development Committee.

If you have one of these associations in your area, join and have your say. We also met Deputy Mayor Kelvin Clout. If the other five new councillors are like these two, things could be looking up for the city.

I only hope council staff give them the support they deserve and not the bureaucracy they give ratepayers when you try to get something done.

Rose-colour goggles got to go Baywave wants to venture into solar panels for pool heating and install a new hydroslide.

So far, most of the initiatives haven’t worked so why punt on something else?

If this outfit was a private enterprise, it wouldn’t still exist. Based on 230,000? visits in 2012/2013, at say $6 each, (allowing for concessions, freebies and promotions), this yields a gross income of around $1.38 million. Baywave makes up most of the Tauranga City Aquatics Ltd lemon with a half-sized pool, not an Olympic pool complex, and employs most TCAL permanent and casual staff, costing say $3.8 million in wages in addition to other running costs.

Rose-coloured spin hides the true financial picture

(including interest bills), even though this councilcontrolled organisation is heavily subsidised by Tauranga City Council ratepayers.

Let the public judge this thing for what it is: A financial millstone with huge water, electricity and repair and maintenance (including malfunction of facilities) bills and accounting, forming a significant part of TCC’s total debt burden.

If Baywave income is $1.38m and operating costs were $5.5m, then estimates place ongoing operational losses at $4m per annum.

Accountability and business acumen seem sorely lacking and true picture camouflaged.

City councillors do have options Re: Tauranga City councillor John Robson’s reply to Y James’ letter regarding fiscal liability.

The councillor implies the ultimate responsibility for substandard utilities, lies with the ratepayer, the electoral roll (the voter), includes a lot more people than just those who proved council funding Ownership of the stormwater/ sewage pipeline issues, is council’s alone, you can draw your own conclusions as to which council entities failed the ratepayer.

The last option is a rates increase, placing more financial burden on the ratepayer base (rate increases continue to average 10 per cent per annum).

Listed below are some options to

fund the above: Get funding from Bay of Plenty Regional Council via Port of Tauranga dividends, Tauranga ratepayers’ contributions to the regional council make up the bulk of the funding to clean up the Rotorua Lakes.

It was Tauranga/Mount Maunganui ratepayers, who were legally obliged to meet any financial shortfalls incurred when the Port was established in the 1950s.

Admit to central government that council has failed with provision of adequate storm water/sewage pipe work sizing to some areas of Tauranga, and request the 15 per cent GST added to rates be withheld/remitted.

This would provide the funding shortfall. Review council funding for the art centre, Baywave, Baypark, museum, etc.

This would release millions.

Employ a council lawyer.

This would save millions. Utilise council staff instead of employing ‘consultants’, to save more millions.

Targeted rating to the affected areas (unfair as they did not create the problem). Once rectified it will see these properties increase in value. Take out a loan.

There’ll be other options I’ve missed, but its up to to councillors to now reconsider their funding options.

Let’s rebel against TCC’s big-spenders Re: Tauranga City councillor John Robson’s reasons why we should be levied for flooding (‘Our council’s plan for flooding is...’ Weekend Sun, February 21).

It never ceases to amaze me how these councillors come up with some of these hair-brained ideas. Maybe he could pay for the scheme, as it would appear he has a surplus amount of money to fund this?

Don’t be too bothered about the poor superannuate, or the low income earner, we don’t count in the scheme of things.

Every year we are slugged, for more rates to cover this or that. But every year our wages or super doesn’t go up to cover these continuous rate increases - and so we

struggle, or have to tighten the belt a little more.

I think it is about time we started to rebel, to what we think is a fair go in regards our excessive rates.

So much for the new batch of councillors, and their promise of being more spendthrift, with our hardearned cash.

No matter what is promised by these local politicians, you can’t trust a word that is uttered from their mouths.

I say enough. Let’s grow some balls and fight for our rights, and let these power-hungry councillors know we have had a guts full, of their big spending ideas.

Spotting crap drivers What’s Mount tourism plan?

I would think most of us have come across the ‘blow you Jack, I’m all right' drivers who won’t let you out into the stream of traffic but just block you.

However, Tuesday morning took the biscuit. I was travelling to Hamilton and reached the stretch of Kaimai ranges road leading up to Kaimai School when, some way ahead of me, I noticed a loaded flatbed truck with little speed ignore the slow vehicle lane and proceed slowly up the fast lane.

For the first time ever, I saw following cars having to use the slow lane to pass him.

How inconsiderate of the truck driver.

It took quite a few kilometres until I passed the truck and noticed the load was sh**houses (portaloos). Three in the back and one driving.

Have these people no concept of reality or visualisation?

Of course it would be an eyesore. What else can it be? It certainly wouldn’t be an enhancement.

The writer’s statement: “built professionally” defines logic. Did they think along the lines local Lions might want to build it as weekend fundraiser?

The towers required to support the massive net-

With wheelhouse buildings on the top and bottom, the whole thing would be more than an eyesore, it would near total obliteration of the natural beauty of this prestige landscape.

Build a Maori village instead I disagree with a gondola being built on top of Mount Maunganui. The cost of construction and maintenance would be very expensive and would have to be propped up by Tauranga ratepayers.

The view from the top is spectacular but to view Mauao from ground level beside the beautiful beach is just as magnificent. If you desire a tourist attraction, build an authentic Maori village easily accessible near the bottom of the mountain. Employ local Maori

Smacking is alright The small light hand smack around a child’s buttocks is perfectly fine when they’re naughty.

If you’d seen the thrashings my brothers and I received in the 1930s-1940s for trivial acts, you’d definitely agree with non-smacking.

They did no harm to our family; all six of us grew up to be well-respected citizens. We have to show them who’s boss, otherwise their naughtiness becomes worse. That’s a sign of weak parental care.

At primary school our headmaster had a thick leather strap he used if a child broke the rules. I can vouch for that.

At our high school some teachers also had leather straps, which I can vouch for again. My three years at high school were wonderful – something I’ll always treasure.

An increasingly wild wake awaits There are amazing things happening in the CD world – the album may be dead but the wake is getting increasingly wild.

Perhaps it’s always like this when a societal shift occurs: before the new can take over, the old has one huge blow-out. And that’s what seems to be happening with the humble CD. Now is the era of the boxed set and there are some truly jawdropping packages out there.

This latest flourishing kicked into high gear four years back with The Beatles’ boxes: 16 CDs, remastered and presented in either mono or stereo. They sold remarkably well worldwide and someone twigged: baby boomers have a bunch of cash and want extravagant souvenirs of their youth.

Now boxed sets are all over the place; whether it’s 22 ‘James Bond’ films or the latest Beatles box (Fiftieth anniversary this time – 12 albums in both mono and stereo, one in just stereo). There’s a pile of excessive options out there, try some of these...

A new Eric Clapton box, Give Me Strength: The '74/'75 Recordings, includes expanded versions of three albums released during that time (461 Ocean Boulevard being the key one), an extra live album, a CD of jams with Freddie King and a blu-ray with 5.1 and quadrophonic mixes.

If you’re into The Who, both Tommy and Qaudrophenia have recently been released in 4CD versions (including demos, live performances and more). Van Morrison’s Moondance also gets 4 CDs, including eight takes of ‘Caravan’ for the truly obsessive. The Band, with guest appearance from Bob Dylan, have turned their 1972 live album Rock of Ages into a 4CD plus DVD collection while The Beach Boys celebrated last year's fiftieth anniversary tour with new album and a 6CD retrospective.

Or try the Paul Simon box (15 CDs), Blue Oyster Cult (15 CDs), or how about 17 CDs of Harry Nillson (which only covers 10 years of his output). But those guys are mere beginners compared to Uncle Bob. Dylan’s Complete Album Collection – wittily subtitled Vol. 1! - includes 47 CDs, which should keep anyone going for a while.

However, even Bob has to bow before The Masters.

John Cash’s Complete Columbia Album Collection contains 59 albums and a mass of bonus songs across 63 discs. Miles Davis has a boxed set with the same name – 71 CDs. How soon is Christmas?

And, still catching up on some late-released local albums from 2013, we have a review of the first volume of Dave Roy’s 4CD collection (it was a busy year for Mr Roy...). Dave Roy & Zingaro - Walk-a-Bout

Walk-a-Bout is, in essence, a musical travelogue (read: eata/drinka-logue) inspired by overseas excursions undertaken in 2011. Each track is intended to present experiences - in no small part, the food and refreshments - and impressions of the specific nations visited. As such, there is no music here that is new. Each track, musically, is easily nailed to the country presented (i.e ‘Po Kare’ for NZ, twinkle-toes ‘Matilda’ for Oz, etc), so there is an instant familiarity to be found in the collection.

Such familiarity - per the old adage - runs high risk of “breeding contempt”, but the skills, arrangements and interpretations/personalities of the Zingaro collective (though unnamed, undoubtedly composed of a bevy of Tauranga’s master musicians) produce surprisingly delightful spins on what could easily have been “karaoked” renditions of over-exposed tunes. No mean feat: Zingaro uniquely reinvigorate classic popular standards with a great deal of style and panache.

And that, I am afraid, is as good as this gets. On his last outing (2012’s At a Certain Moment) Mr Roy offered us a number of wryly engaging - albeit slightly awkward in places - personal observations from a life well lived. This time, all we get is a bunch of rather simple and stilted stories about what sort of food and drink Mr Roy found to be enjoyable in each country visited, along with other generalities that offer no greater insight into either the national character being experienced, or the impact of it on Mr Roy. Regretfully, there was nothing here for me to feel connected to, or with.

With three more CDs of his to review I am hopeful (as most all of my teachers at college wished of me) Mr Roy “will do better”.

Starring: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney - Dir: Alphonse Cuarón

Gravity is a true wonder of filmmaking. Occasionally films come along which seem to push the visual boundaries of the medium – Life of Pi did that a couple of years back with its CGI tiger, Gravity achieves a place in cinema history with its depiction of space in 3D. The slight problem that arises, however, is that the yawning chasm that was space on the giant cinema screen is somewhat diminished on yer regular telly, big and flat though it may be. The first half-hour is still thrilling; the disaster that reduces the crew to the very good-looking astronaut pairing of George Clooney and Sandra Bullock is an awesome set-piece, an astonishing bit of work on every level.

The Act of Killing is a simply astonishing film that might win the Best Documentary Oscar on Monday. Unless it’s too weird. Filmed in Indonesia, it centres on various 1960s death squad leaders who are now living as happy heroes: their genocide has never been confronted or punished. Since they love cinema the filmmakers give them cameras and allowed them to recreate their murderous acts in the styles of the films they so admire. Yep, it’s as unusual as it sounds but, somewhere in the surreal strangeness, some form of catharsis, or at least recognition, is reached. Bold, brilliant, beautiful and bewildering.

Freaky Deaky is based on a story by the late great Elmore Leonard and, like Get Shorty, Jackie Brown and the odd other story that have successfully been made into films, it’s a complicated ensemble piece, brimming with eccentric characters and plot twists. Such flicks are a tricky juggling act and director Charles Matthau fails to find a consistent tone or corral his actors into one particular style. It’s set mid-seventies and involves an ex-bomb squad officer, rape, revenge and explosives, but Christian Slater and (more unfortunately) Crispin Glover are wasted and the whole thing’s a bit of a jumbled mess.

It seems inevitable that someone would pair eighties action icons Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Escape is a perfectly serviceable Plan prison drama in the mould of Lock Out and other flicks that posit ultra-high security prisons in impossibly unlikely locations. Sly’s job - well past retirement age though he looks - involves being locked up to secretly test “security”. He’s been double-crossed. Arnie’s a fellow inmate who helps him escape; Jim Caviezel is the sadistic governor. The story gets increasingly absurd but the film is at least well shot and made with confidence.

Trash, obviously, but not embarrassing trash.

Runner Runner is a glossy good-looking film that falls short mainly thanks to its underwhelming leads. Whoever thought it was a good idea pairing Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck deserves the blame here. Timberlake is a great support actor but, as In Time showed, doesn’t have the chops to carry a film. Affleck’s underplaying seems wilfully wooden. It’s all set in Puerto Rico where Ben runs an online poker empire. Justin is his somewhat naïve new employee, a monetary wiz high on the sudden influx of wealth. It all ends in predictable tears, breaking little new ground along the way.

And both Clooney and Bullock do great work, his deliberately non-flashy turn grounding the film. She is solidly and dependably in girl-next-door mode, acting in very challenging conditions while never losing her essential likeability.

On the downside, the small screen does show up the trite lashing of mainstream sentimentality that engulfs the film as it heads towards the naffly predictable happy conclusion. It seems churlish to complain, but it’s not just me being grumpy: even at the cinema the group of us came out and everyone was shaking their heads in disappointment at the way the film went downhill into clichéd conventionality.

by Scarlett Johansson), and in the midst of romantic relationship with a piece of technology. Co-stars Amy Adams and Rooney Mara.

Theatre education for anyone A new series of acting classes for all ages and skill levels is starting at Mauao Performing Arts Centre this year.

The classes will tackle a wide variety of drama tools and techniques essential for an actor or actressesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; development and conďŹ dence, says tutor Dylan Frewin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The subject of drama is as broad as it is diverse; so while we tackle the challenge of teaching such a subject, we will be keeping one very important thing in mind â&#x20AC;&#x201C; fun.â&#x20AC;?

Skills covered in the courses will include: â&#x20AC;˘ Having a strong clear voice â&#x20AC;˘ Good clear speech/diction â&#x20AC;˘ The Ability to analyse a scene correctly â&#x20AC;˘ Semantics - the ability to use words speciďŹ cally in order to choose a good action â&#x20AC;˘ The ability to work off another person â&#x20AC;˘ The ability to act before you think â&#x20AC;˘ The ability to concentrate. The highly-anticipated event will see the educators adopt all-new personas when they battle it out at ASB Baypark on Saturday in front of thousands of expectant young fans.

The Saturday race is ‘Kids Go Free’ (15 years and under), so pupils by the hundreds are expected to turn up to support their principals.

Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby will be judging the best-dressed school this year, with the winning school receiving a $1000 More FM advertising package.

Local author and columnist Tommy Kapai will also add to the fun.

A chant, with a verse per principal, will be performed live as each is paraded in.

Sun Media will video the entries for viewing on SunLive. Meanwhile, SunLive’s poll, enabling the public to vote for their favourite principal also closes tomorrow, with the winning principal receiving a 2014/2015 season pass to ASB Baypark Speedway.

Verbally, the competition has already begun, with principals bantering it out on air during five morning interviews on More FM this week. Bay Leisure and Events commercial manager Ervin McSweeney says the principals’ race is yet another fun-filled event that the Western Bay of Plenty can be proud of.

Women cooking up a brighter future The problems of poverty and prostitution in India may seem a world away from the Western Bay, but members of the Tauranga Zonta club are urging others to celebrate International Women’s Day and help make a difference.

Zonta International Tauranga Club director Trish Hanlen is encouraging interested people to attend an inspiring fundraising breakfast meeting at The Mount Club next Friday, where Waikato woman Pam McCarthy will talk about how she’s helping families in the South-Asian country.

Pam, who has travelled to Kolkata’s red light district every year for the last six years with the organisation Freeset, which helps women trapped in the sex trade get out, is making a major difference for many families by giving them a simple pressure cooker.

Spurred on by the benefit it’s had for families by halving kerosene bills and cutting cooking times, Pam began a fundraising push by making cushions and preserves – raising $12,400 to buy cookers for 276 families.

Funds raised at the upcoming Zonta club breakfast will go to the work of Freeset along with Zonta International’s projects helping women around the world.

What is a Spirit-filled church? (Part 2) Last time we considered the question: “What does a Holy Spirit-filled local church like?”

The first three signs to look for are: a church which has a very clear and unambiguous focus on the Person and work of Jesus Christ; believers who are all, individually, converted to Christ; and where there’s a deep love for God’s Word (the Bible).

A fourth sign of a Spirit-filled local church is where there is a love for Biblical preaching. This is sometimes also called expository

preaching. Since the Holy Spirit is the author of the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21), we can be sure a Spirit-filled church is one where the pulpit is the main focus in the worship service. By “pulpit” I mean a sermon where the Bible is unpacked, explained, and applied to everyday life – over and against the sermon being replaced by shallow ‘teaching’ that has more entertainment value, or someone’s subjective ‘opinion’.

Life’s very sobering truth The recent tragic death of celebrity Charlotte Dawson brings home the sobering truth that not everyone is mentally coping with life.

It would appear she had everything going for her, yet those who knew her speak of her battle with depression.

Recently, I heard of two up-andcoming NRL League players, who’d just made the cut and were destined for great things, yet something was too much for them and they too took their own lives.

Last year, pastor Rick Warren, author of bestseller ‘40 Days of Purpose’, lost his son Matthew – he took his own life.

His parents knew he’d struggled with depression all of his life.

Why? Something inside these and others like them wasn’t right. Something on the inside was a weight too much to bear.

Physically, outwardly, they may have seemed okay, but inside there was a huge daily battle going on, a battle for freedom and peace and rest of soul.

I certainly don’t have all of the answers to the questions left unanswered after the heart-break of suicide, but I do know the pain and shame and weight of depression. Prevention is better than cure, so what could we do

to keep a healthy mind? Here’s some things I do as preventative maintenance for my mind.

Read the Bible regularly. Pastor Rick Warren says: “Your illness is not your identity, your chemistry is not your character.”

“We need to get our identity – who we are, our value – not from society, the media or current trends, but from God and His Word.”

Find what refreshes you mentally, and do that often. Is it music, exercise, the outdoors, tramping, camping, dining, digging, reading, writing, or coffees.

Just do it.

Don’t be afraid to see someone, and take meds, for a season. Rick Warren says again: “If you struggle with a broken brain, you should be no more ashamed than someone with a broken arm.

“It’s not a sin to take meds. It’s not a sin to get help. You don’t need to be ashamed.”

Finally, stay connected to a few trusted people.

There is hope for mental health. It is firstly in coming to Him, who is the great burden bearer, who promises to give us rest for our soul.

That’s the place of maximum security and inner health.

us to serve God, and not to be served by God. 1 Corinthians 12:7 & 14:12 says: “to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good”, and the “edification of the church”. If the local church has an army of servants doing the work of ministry, for the common good of all, the Holy Spirit is mightily present.

Last but not least in this series, another sure sign of a Spirit-filled local church is there is an orderliness and intelligibility when the people are gathered for worship. God is a God of order, beauty, and comprehension. He always communicates Himself to us in language everyone understands (1 Corinthians 14:33).

The Holy Spirit does not sow confusion, but brings peace and unity in the local church.

In short, a Spirit-filled gathering will be orderly and intelligible.
