Dedicated readers may recall that this columnist conducted a thorough two-point investigation into the scandalous use of scantily clad, beautiful women.

Thanks to all our readers who have responded to get things off their chest.

The national media has been buzzing in an attempt to keep us abreast of the controversy.

Some veteran women broadcasters have been among the most vocal in condemning the blatant, sexist bikini adverts that have cavorted shamelessly across our screens.

They have included Pam Corkery, Louise I think her name was, and Hilary Barry.

As a professional journalist and non-sexist mature media commentator I have this to say to Hilary: You’re so hot when you are angry.

I suggest the way forward is to convene a sensible panel discussion between myself and these lofty examples of NZ’s broadcasting finest. Bring along Susan Wood, the chick from Paul Henry’s show and a couple of vacuous weather girls.

We will thoroughly debate the pros and cons of our national airline promoting its safety messages via scantily clad models. The venue: my hot tub.

I am, of course, assuming that bikinis will not be acceptable attire so we will accept one pieces.

Which piece, I don’t really mind.

At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter what the critics think, because this has been a huge marketing success for Air New Zealand. It racked up the google international searches for the safety video message, busting previous ratings.

Any publicity is good publicity; and controversy skyrockets the message. Great work, Air NZ and your marketing team.

In other news, it’s been an odd week at RR headquarters since the rabbit has been working on a secret project in a remote location. So the connection to the outside world has been at best, spasmodic.

The highlights of the odd glimpses of news filtering through to the rabbit ears have included a stunning cricket win by the Black Caps and a woman in Spain being blown up when her toilet exploded.

Then sketchy reports suggested Princess Diana had died in a car crash in a tunnel in France, but this must be a gross exaggeration by the media, surely?

Next they’ll be trying to tell us Elvis is dead.

Besides, if Diana had been killed by an exploding toilet; that would be believable.

Meanwhile, it seems Mr Dotcom hasn’t been paying his bills and creditors are getting a bit fed up. Watch this space, Mr Dotcom is a train wreck waiting to happen. This saga is all going to come unstuck in spectacular fashion.

Critters and trees

The local ARRC are doing a fantastic job of rehoming critters and have a cool event coming up, with the support of Phil Rudd of AC/DC fame.

These wonderful folk are doing a great job helping animals and deserve our full support.

Elsewhere in town, pohutukawa trees have become the new mangroves. They’re in the sights of those who find the mess annoying. And destructive.

This is going to be an interesting debate because there’s one thing that people will never agree on -and that is trees.

Parting shot

The number of clowns in the world is declining, according to the international clown association.

Worldwide the membership of this union of funny fellas has taken a red nose dive.

Lincoln’s legacy Four months ago Tauranga parents Alyssa Craig and Ash Glanville lost their ďŹ ve-year-old son to a rare condition which presented itself as no more than a tummy bug, but turned fatal in less than 24 hours.

Now Alyssa, 24, is campaigning to raise as much awareness as possible of Myocarditis – the virus that stole her “angel�.

On October 14, 2013, Lincoln Craig woke feeling under the weather. He went through the day as normal but began vomiting and registering a mild fever at 7pm. “I gave him Pamol as any parent would think, I thought he had just caught a tummy bug,â€? says Alyssa. “He was totally coherent, I never thought once to take him to the doctor. We were just going to ride out the night, keep the uids up and see how he was in

Lifeguards remember brave boy

Members of the Bay of Plenty community are mourning the loss of Papamoa boy Harrison Mundy, who died this week after a brave battle with cancer.

Eleven-year-old Harrison Alexander Mundy touched the hearts of many when he was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma on June 22 last year.

He passed away peacefully at his home with his mum and dad, Hayley and Allan Mundy, by his side on Sunday.

On Thursday lifeguards from around the country participated in a moment’s silence for Harrison, an Omanu clubbie, before the start of the Oceans’ 14 carnival.

The Mundys are a well-known family in Tauranga where father Allan was a teacher and Mount Maunganui College and member of Omanu Surf Life Saving Club, where Harrison was a clubbie. Hayley works at Papamoa’s House of Travel.

City Mayor announces last term

Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby will not be seeking re-election for another term he has confirmed this week.

After 12 years of being Mayor, Stuart says he has other things he wants to achieve.

“And I personally believe it is time for the city to have a fresh face. It’s not that I don’t love the job. I love the job passionately, and I would be capable if the electors wanted me to do more terms.

“But large cities and Tauranga is in the top six cities, need to move forward. In my view they need to constantly be refreshed and my current feeling is that come 2016 the city should have a fresh face as the Mayor of Tauranga after 12 years.”

Speed likely in Brookfield crash

Speed is believed to be a factor in a crash at Brookfield that left a motorcyclist in Tauranga Hospital.

The 44-year-old rider suffered serious injuries when his motorbike and a Honda Fit collided on outside the Mobil station on Otumoetai Road about 4pm on Wednesday.

Mother robbed of memories

A distraught Tauranga mother is pleading for the return of irreplaceable items, featuring her dead son, stored in a safe stolen from her Margaret Road home.

Julia Shearer feels like her private domain has been violated after someone broke into her bedroom and took a safe containing family photos and jewellery.

Julia’s son Shaun Hogarth died after the dinghy he was in with three other teenagers became swamped in the harbour near Omokoroa on October 16, 2012.

Wish4Fish founder Bryce Dinneen hopes the event on March 1 will blow last year’s competition out of the water, with higher registration numbers and big results.

“We’re looking to really build it up, we had 54 fishers last year; and this year we’re hoping for 154.”

While the basic details are the same as last year’s inaugural event – which sees all funds raised go to The Wish4Fish Charitable Trust – Bryce says next weekend’s prize pool has grown significantly.

“We have had amazing support from local businesses and organisations.”

Tauranga Sport Fishing Club at Sulphur Point Marina is providing the venue, where briefing/registration takes place on Friday, February 28, at 7pm. This will include spot prizes, bait auctions, raffles and family fun.

Entrants will start fishing from 6am on Saturday, with fishing finishing at 4pm and the weigh-in from 4pm-6pm.

Prize-giving, at 7.30pm, will feature a live auction with items including a month’s free advertising on SunLive and Waterline Online, and a half-day fishing charter with three Super Rugby Chiefs players.

“It’s not about competition,” says Bryce. “It’s about embracing the day, and having fun.

“It’s a charity about disabilities, but this event is for everyone.”

Competition entry costs $40 per person or $120 per team, with four people maximum, and $15 for children. Register early through the club or by emailing bryce@wish4fish.co.nz, or attend registration on Friday.

“This is all about promoting Wish4Fish, lifting the profile, having fun and raising some money.”

Bryce started Wish4Fish in the hopes of encouraging and aiding salt water activities, including fishing for the mentally and physically challenged. He has been chair-bound since

Coral’s Olympic selection Tauranga board sailor Coral Headey is the sole female representative in the New Zealand boardsailing division at the Youth Olympic Games, in Nanjing in August this year.

Coral won selection at last weekend’s Techno293 National Championships, where Coral regained her title as Under 17 Girls Techno293 National Champion. Coral has been preparing for the trials for the last 18 months, says her mother Christine Headey.

“The trials were closely fought in conditions that were sometimes too light to actually race, and where the regatta was in danger of not being completed.

“After being disqualified from the first race with an OCS all the pressure was on Coral to complete five races to be able to drop the OCS from the series.

“She managed a very creditable fourth overall in the mixed fleet.”

Coral’s selection is subject to confirmation.

This week’s Oceans 14 New Zealand under-14 surf lifesaving championships in Mount Maunganui is big on family.

The annual showpiece began Thursday afternoon and runs until Sunday, attracting more than 800 juniors from 29 different clubs.

Sprinkled liberally through the team lists are handfuls of siblings and plenty of proud pedigree.

Papamoa’s Mitch Cowdrey, 13, is the last of four brothers who have all excelled at Oceans, under the proud gaze of parents Ailsa and Dave.

“My brothers were the ones who taught me how to ride a board – Mum reckons I was standing up and surfing at four – so they've definitely been a positive influence,” says Mitch.

In his last year of the under-14 age group, he’s keen to back up the 10 individual medals he’s already collected. Between them, Mitch, and brothers Jake, Scott and Ross, have amassed 45 Oceans medals since Ross was nine.

Papamoa are defending champions, having edged out Red Beach and Mount Maunganui last year.

Up the road at Omanu, Dominic and Francesca Piceno will join Josef and Loui Schuler – sons of Bay

of Plenty rugby coach Kevin – in the ranks this year.

They’ll also call on Ella Pollock again in the under13 ranks, after she broke her wrist during the beach flags last year but came storming home with cast swinging to win beach sprint gold three days later.

Mount Maunganui also has family tales to tell.

Fresh from capturing the three big Eastern Region championships, the Mount club is eyeing up a strong performance at Oceans.

Leading the charge is the youngest members of two families, who have contributed significantly to the club’s success this season.

Rebecca Barron and Daniel Miller both have big shoes to fill, each with older siblings (Daniel and Amy Barron, and Hamish and Jessica Miller), who have starred at Oceans in the last five years and moved into the senior ranks.

They’ve also dragged respective parents into the surf, with Doug Miller and Jill Barron each contributing to the Eastern Region masters’ win.

“We’ve watched the kids evolve in the sport since they were five and it was inevitable – seeing the fun they have training and competing – that a group of like-minded parents finally decided to take the plunge,” says Doug.

Penguin moulting season December through to April marks the moulting season for little blue penguins throughout the region.

Mount Penguin Monitoring group leader Dave Richards says some people get worried when they see penguins missing uff or feathers and assume they are sick or injured – but warns this is often not the case. “If there is no obvious sign of injury and [the bird] is not in any danger from dogs or cars, then it is probably moulting and should be left alone. “This is a natural process, where the old feathers fall out and are replaced with new feathers.â€?

Dave says during this time, the penguin is not waterproof, so it needs to stay out of the water on land for two-three weeks. “They often look quite sickly and ill due to the patchy loss of feathers, but are usually perfectly ďŹ ne.â€?

Dave says if the bird is in a high use area, it can be placed under a rock out of harm’s way or hidden in vegetation near the water.

Not many Tauranga residents can claim they’ve lived in the city for more than 35,000 days – but 96-year-old Alf Rendell can.

Since the 1900s, he’s seen Tauranga change from a “sleepy little town� to a thriving city – because he’s lived here since he was eight months old.

Alf ’s parents Robert John and Lois Josephine travelled from Whakatane to Tauranga by boat in 1918.

They built a home in Otumoetai in 1964 – and Alf has lived there ever since. “It was just one gradual change from a sleepy little town where you knew everyone‌and now I’m lucky when I meet someone I know. “That’s a big change,â€? says Alf. Leaving school at age 16, Alf went to work at his father’s photography business – Rendell’s Photo Studio. When Alf took over the business, he changed its name to Rendell’s Photo Service and sold half of it in 1957 to a co-worker while he ran the retail photography shop.

Known to many as Tauranga’s earlier on-the-spot

photographer, Alf ’s been in the background, or foreground, snapping away at many signiďŹ cant city events during the years, including a truck versus train accident on Dive Crescent more than 50 years ago. “I photographed mostly people, weddings and things like that. But if something happened I would just go out and take a picture of it,â€? says Alf. He also collects photographs of the city’s history and has albums full of old photographs – some of which he’s taken himself and some he’s collected.

In 1946, Alf met his wife Joan and married her a year later. Together they had four children, two sons and two daughters, who gave him eight grandchildren.

Alf lives alone and drives himself twice-weekly about 20-minutes out of town to Te Puna Quarry Park, where he’s been a volunteer for 11 years and is the oldest helper there.

A lover of the sea, Alf says his favourite thing to do here is watch the water. “I used to spend a lot of time growing up down the Waikareao Estuary with the canoe and I remember we went sailing. And I had a yacht before the war.�

collection of historic and just old buildings – but they’ve been headed off by a change to the Building Act 2004, which requires a registered building practitioner to oversee weather tightness work.

“One of the things long term is we are hoping the Friends of the village can find a licenced building practitioner, who can oversee stuff like that,” says village manager Michael Thomson.

The village currently has 100 per cent occupancy and finding room for the volunteers required some re-organising, says Michael.

A broken right arm is not going to stop Tauranga 10-year-old Joshua Keene from competing in Sunday’s Weet-Bix Kids Tryathlon.

“I’ve never done it before, but I just wanted to give it a go,” says Joshua, who will be among more than 1000 children taking part in the annual run-cycle-swim event at Memorial Park that has become a fun tradition for many young Kiwis.

“I think it will be a really good opportunity for me to try and give it my best and push myself,” says the Tauranga Adventist School pupil, summing up the participation philosophy behind the event, where everyone who finishes wins a medal.

While Joshua’s broken arm means he can’t do the swim leg, he’s linked up with friend Bethany Addinall to compete as a team.

So Bethany’s taking care of the swimming and Joshua’s running and cycling.

“I want to do my best and really don’t want to crash my bike, because I’m still finding it a bit tricky with my arm.”

Joshua and his brother Aaron are among more than one-quarter of pupils at Tauranga Adventist School taking part, one of many schools encouraging participation.

Pillans Point School sports coordinator Lianne Carr, who is recommending interested pupils to participate, says the focus on “trying” and celebrating effort makes the event more accessible for less competitive children.

part of sport and to give it a try – and that’s what this is all about.”

Children will be cheered on by Olympians and world champion cyclists Alison Shanks, BMX rider Sarah Walker and New Zealand cross triathlon champion Olly Shaw – athletes whose determination and grit epitomises the Tryathlon spirit, says Sanitarium general manager Pierre van Heerden.

By February 18, a total of 1067 seven to 15 year olds had registered, with late registrations open on the morning. The event venue opens 7am and children need to be checked-in by 8.15am to participate. The first race begins 9am.

Walking the beat

The Bay of Plenty has seen an increase of 227 per cent in police foot patrols in the last three years.

Western Bay of Plenty area commander Inspector Clifford Paxton says foot patrols continue to be a focus for officers in the WBOP, as part of preventionbased activities.

“Focus is also given on vehicle checkpoints, hotel checks and second-hand dealer checks.

“Prevention-based activities are important for us in raising visibility and presence in our communities.”

Making a racket

Hundreds of teenagers are making a racket in Papamoa today, as they compete in the Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Senior Tennis Championships 2014.

From 9.30am today, about 100 senior tennis players will take to the courts at Papamoa Tennis Club for the one-day tournament.

The event, managed by Julie Adamson and Peter O’Dea, sees senior tennis players – aged 15-18 – compete in two divisions.

“In the competitive side, there are fantastic kids who are highly-ranked. So it’s great tennis to watch,” says Julie. “It’s an enjoyable tournament.

“The kids love it.”

Focused relaxation. It’s what Russell Lake describes as the key to successful long distance running – a challenge he knows well.

As part of an intensive training programme to prepare for the Tarawera Ultra Marathon’s 85km race last March he competed in Taupo’s Length of the Lake solo race.

“I had three goals – firstly I wanted to finish, then I wanted to do as well as I could. After that my final goal was to win,” says Russell, who realised he had a chance to finish the 67km race first in under five hours about half-way into the race.

Russell, who got the bug for long distance running at secondary school, set his eyes on finishing in record time after recovering lost ground to the lead pack when slowing to eat.

“I dug deep to catch up with them and realised I could keep up the faster pace for a lot longer – so that’s when I made my break.”

The result was a record time of four

hours, 59 minutes and 44 seconds.

While Russell has been training hard to defend his win, he doubts he’ll be as fast on Saturday, February 22, when he runs the length of the lake from Pukawa to Taupo CBD. “I’ve been running 100km a week, but I’d really like to be doing 140km to properly prepare.”

Last year’s ‘training run’ paid off with him winning the Tarawera 85km race – but this year he’s pushing himself further, taking on the renowned 100km Tarawera run against a field of top international talent.

“Realistically, I don’t think I will be even placing in that event because there are some rally strong runners.”

Asked what keeps him going back for more in these gruelling ultra-marathon events, Russell struggles to explain. “It’s hard to describe, it’s just something that I really enjoy.

“You have to concentrate and look out for obstacles in your path, but you don’t want to concentrate too hard – you want to be running as smoothly and efficiently as possible.”

The Tauranga/Katikati Music Festival is on this weekend at musician duo Paul and Penny’s Work Rd orchard. From 7pm to 9pm Saturday and 10am to 9pm Sunday, the small-scale festival features a blackboard concert on Saturday and a full-on day of workshops and music on Sunday.

Fishing event for a closer family Mums, uncles, big brothers, grandparents and a lot of dads will be out in force spending quality time with their children in the inaugural Kidz Need Dadz fishing competition and fun day.

Fishing is sited on The Strand’s waterfront area from the carpark to the fish and chip shop on Dive Crescent – and Kidz Needs Dads manager Lianne Mather is expecting strong interest in the event.

It was initially planned to run for the first time last year but was cancelled due to windy conditions.

“It’s all about providing a great bonding experience for children,” says Lianne, who was inspired by the charitable trust’s chairman Regan Douglas and the success of the Police Blue Light organisation in running a similar event.

“Regan encouraged the idea, saying the time you spend with your children fishing is a great time to connect and build a strong relationship.”

Lianne says the fun fishing competition is a perfect fit for the Tauranga-based organisation, which aims to support and foster strong relationships between fathers and their children.

“We are about promoting fantastic relationships, by having parents involved in children’s lives, and that’s what this is about. We want to see families having fun together.”

Lianne says research shows children who have strong and supportive relationships with their parents do better, and hopes regular events like this will remind parents about the importance of spending quality time with their youngsters.

“It’s a huge thing. If we could take a whole generation and help them have great relationships with their parents, imagine the difference it would make for them and all of the next generations.”

Along with the fishing contest from 10am-noon, which will see children win prizes for the longest fish as well as spot prizes, there will be fun activities, including a bouncy castle, face painting and sausage sizzle. Bike thefts on the rise in the Mount A Mount Maunganui police officer is asking people to lock away their bikes following a spate of thefts in the area.

Community Constable Erin Senior says police reports show the bikes reported stolen were not locked up.

“Complacency increases the risk of bicycle theft; these thefts have occurred both on private property and in public places.

“If you are going to check the surf, grab some groceries or go shopping even for a short period of time, please consider what lock you have for securing your bike.”

Erin says police have previously come across offenders who carry bolt cutters, so it is recommended bike owners use a robust lock.

“When a bike is stolen police need as much information and detail about the bike as possible, do you know the serial number of the bike? Have you noted down all identifying features to assist in relocating your bike?

“As a result of the recent thefts, police have been out in the community putting up signs to remind the public ‘lock it or lose it’, to remind the public of the need to keep your bikes and property secure.”

Bringing back the Balmorals Marchers Anita MacLeod and Andrea Martin.

There’s more to marching than walking in unison – Anita MacLeod is keen to make this clear.

A passionate marching enthusiast, 60-year-old Anita started the Balmoral Marching Team in 2013 and is looking for members to complete her 12-strong team.

The team currently has seven members, but needs five more between the age of 28-60 years old.

“The ladies I have are absolutely loving it,” says Anita.

“We have loads of fun.”

while in Year 13 last year.

The 18-year-old received a Top Subject Scholar award for his French exam and an Outstanding Scholar award for the other four scholarship examinations.

The results earned him a Premier Award, which is presented to only 10 students nationwide.

His efforts grant him a monetary award of $10,000 each year for three years towards his maths and physics studies at Auckland University.

“I’m feeling pretty pleased to be honest,” says Daniel. “It is very unexpected; there is a lot of surprise.

“I’ve always been interested in maths and physics. I sort of actually knew, even when I left primary school, I wanted to be a physicist.”

Daniel’s dream is to become an astroparticle physicist at CERN – the European organisation for nuclear research in Geneva, Switzerland.

“There’s so much we don’t know yet; and there’s so much out there that we can find out. It’s the idea of learning more and gaining more knowledge about the universe and what makes up the universe and how the universe works.”

Aquinas College principal Ray Scott says Daniel is an all-round academic achiever who took on leadership roles, including student executive in 2013, and was head of the school’s environment committee.

“Obviously, he’s quite an outstanding student and to achieve at that level – you don’t come across that very often. We’re really thrilled for him.

“It’s very rare to see a student working at that level across such a range of subjects.” By Zoe Hunter

but that’s not an issue, they are doing really well. We have a set marching plan and we also do displays, to any kind of music.”

Anita hopes, with a full team, to take part in the Tauranga Leisure Display Day in August, and to march in the Tauranga Nationals in March 2014.

“We have the plan and that’s what we’d like to achieve.”

Coming from a family of marchers, Anita has been involved in the leisure sport from a young age – her parents instructing the Balmorals Marching Team back in the 1960s when they were national champions.

“I have very much revived

the name of the team.”

While great for socialising, Anita says there is more to marching than most people think.

“It’s discipline, and holding yourself.

It’s like lifting up your posture and being as straight as you possibly can.

“It’s not like walking down the road.

It’s all in unison, and it’s definitely a skill.”

The team trains at Greerton Primary School each Tuesday from 6.30pm8.30pm. Training is $10 weekly to provide funds for hall hire during winter.

Successive councils and staff have worked for three years to reach a mutual solution with the government.

Route K will be debt free by 2035.

The government will own the northern road into NZ’s largest sea port on July 1, 2015. It’s important for the national economy that this road is adequately managed.

The deal is for council to gift Route K, including all future costs and toll revenue, to government. The $66 million debt stays on our books, but the government guarantees funding to council each year to pay-off the entire Route K debt by 2035.

The tolls will stay until the debt is paid off, or a

devoted local Member of Parliament gets the debt written off completely.

The government (through the New Zealand Transport Agency), wants to install electronic tolls at Route K at the same time as the Tauranga Eastern Link (TEL) opens in 2015. We’re raising the tolls on Route K by 50 cents for a car and $1 for a heavy vehicle. This will repay the debt faster and make Route K similar in

Should students, stood down and disengaged from school, be considered a public health issue?

I recently read a paper titled ‘Being stood down from school is a cry for help’ (Child Youth Mortality Review Group Auckland). Reading this paper, I’m left in little doubt students who drop out of school prematurely are more likely to engage in risky behaviour and to have negative health and social outcomes.

As a community, how can we better manage our ‘at-risk’ kids? The report documents of youths who turn to suicide, 43 per cent had been stood down from school one or more times.

This week elected members went on a bus trip to visit Tauranga City Council’s water and wastewater plants.

Tauranga has two water treatment plants, one on Joyce Rd and the other at Oropi. Both treatment plants use microfiltration technology as the primary means of treatment.

Global Muay Thai instructor’s fresh start With feet and hands firmly strapped, Alexis Lazo is preparing to make a good fist of his time in Tauranga City, providing inspiration to the next crop of Muay Thai enthusiasts.

And the former Muay Thai competitor brings a tremendous wealth of experience to the city, boasting an impressive record of fights along with two Northern Thailand Championships during his time in the birth-

place of Muay Thai – Thailand.

Originally a professional footballer in his home nation of Spain, the 32-year-old admits the switch in sporting codes follows a number o f injuries hampering his right knee, providing a sporting pilgrimage of some sorts.

“I started in Spain actually, because I was watching a movie about Thailand Muay Thai and then I was thinking ‘I want to be like that guy’ and I looked for a club in my home town,” says Alexis.

“I started training and then one day decided to go to Thailand; and everything changed.

“The movie changed my way of thinking and gave me another passion.”

During the next six years Alexis carved out a successful career in the art of Muay Thai, ending with an amazing 81 wins, 14 losses and travelling throughout Asia in the process.

But with his future and body’s wellbeing in mind, Alexis booked a flight out of Thailand in search of greener and more fruitful pastures, landing in Tauranga to teach in Greerton.

Road tripping Women cyclists are being encouraged to take up road riding, with a weekly group ride being run by a pair of biking enthusiasts.

The women’s road riding group, which was set up by Rocket Bikes owners Dave Bamford and Tanya Bamford-King in October, aims to make it more enjoyable for women riders who are usually put off by riding with typically-competitive male cyclists.

At 6pm every Thursday any interested riders can meet at the Cameron Rd bike shop for about a 20km ride, at a pace of about 16km/h, which Dave says will be “far too slow for most men”.

“We find that some women get intimidated by how competitive it can be riding with men, but they like the low key, fun approach we take.”

Dave, who leads the group, says he’s open to men joining in the typically 20km-long rides, as long as they’re happy with the slower pace. Anyone interested can join in the ride this Thursday. For information, call 07 571 6107.

Known to many for his community efforts alongside owner Karen Peters, who collects money for charity with her dog, Charlie will be losing his fur for Child Cancer Foundation’s annual Mount Beach Bald – Shave Your Lid for a Brave Kid. It’s a new challenge for Charlie who for almost seven weeks has been recovering at home after a large German shepherd attacked him on January 2.

He had 45 stitches from his shoulder blade to the front of his stomach.

Since the attack, Karen started a Facebook page for people to keep up-to-date with Charlie’s progress where the community has shared their heartfelt wishes for the little dog.

Karen says Charlie now knows what it's like to be on the receiving end of kindness and he wants to keep giving back to the community.

Charlie’s personal groomer Jill from Pets by Design in Greerton will be shaving his fur, while Salon One in Fraser Cove will be shaving the other participants.

Mount Beach Bald is at Mount Maunganui Main Beach on March 15 from 11am.

Lifesavers remember young clubbie Close to 900 junior surf lifesavers this week honoured Papamoa boy Harrison Mundy, who died on Sunday after a brave battle with cancer, in a special tribute at the Oceans14 New Zealand under-14 championships in Mount Maunganui.

Eleven-year-old Harrison Alexander Mundy was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma on June 22 last year.

He passed away peacefully at his home with his mum and dad, Hayley and Allan Mundy, by his side on February 16.

His brave fight touched the hearts of many in the community including his fellow

clubbies at Omanu Surf Life Saving Club, who organised a memorial in his honour on day one of the Oceans carnival on February 20-23.

It is the biggest event in the calendar for young surf lifesavers, who will compete in four age groups from the Under-11s through to Under-14s.

The 52-strong Omanu team will be holding their clubmate Harrison’s memory close to their hearts as they compete in the championships.

A post on Omanu Beach Surf Life Saving Club’s Facebook page says club members will miss seeing Harrison’s “smiling face”.

“Harrison you have earned your wings. You fought long and hard and always with a smile. A smile no one will ever forget. At peace now...love from all your Omanu clubbies.”

A funeral service in memory of Harrison will be held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church on Monday, February 24, at 1pm. This will be followed by a private burial.

Fast-track housing for fever-risk families Bay of Plenty families with children at risk of rheumatic fever will be fast-tracked to the top of a North Island-based waiting list for state housing, says Housing Minister Nick Smith.

In an announcement this week, the Minister says from March 1 the rheumatic fever housing prioritisation will be extended to include the Bay of Plenty, Capital and Coast, Hawke's Bay, Hutt Valley, Lakes, Northland, Tairawhiti and Waikato district health board areas.

Families with children at risk have been prioritised in Auckland since last year.

Children and young people are most likely to get rheumatic fever from ‘strep throat'.

Most strep throat gets better and does not lead to rheumatic fever, but in a small number of people an untreated strep throat develops into rheumatic fever, where the person's heart, joints, brain and skin become inamed and swollen. While the symptoms of rheumatic fever may disappear on their own, the inammation can cause rheumatic heart disease - the

scarring of the heart valves. People with rheumatic heart disease may need heart valve replacement surgery, and it can cause premature death. In 2012, 171 people were admitted to hospital for the ďŹ rst time with rheumatic fever.

Nick says with a strong link between housing conditions and rheumatic fever cabinet agreed to extend the Social Allocation System beyond Auckland to the additional eight areas. Families with urgent housing needs will be prioritised if they have one or more children who have been hospitalised for lower respiratory tract infections in their current housing during the last two years.

Lumber links: the lower back As you will diligently recall from my previous three columns, I’ve been discussing the Spinal Health Link series. I’ll now cover the lumbar (lower back) links.

The most common pain problems I see clinically is low back pain arising from either moving joints of the lumbar area (facet joints), or damage to the shock absorbers between the vertebrae (discs), arising from activities or postures that have placed undue stress on these structures.

For example; the full-on day’s gardening you just had to finish, or moving the plant you should’ve left for the teenager, or landing on your butt as you show the children your awesome skateboard skills

(albeit when you were a bit younger).

The key to sorting this pain, as with all pain, is to get an accurate early diagnosis and then appropriate treatment while ensuring the triggers to your pain are corrected.

The lumbar area, and in particular the sacro-iliac joints (where the pelvic bones join the low back), form the so-called ‘base of the pyramid’.

Hence, pain referral from this area could be directly from the trunk to the big toe; and more indirectly, via its mechanical links being the underlying cause for those persisting headaches, vertigo, neck, shoulder, hip, knee, ankle and shin pain.

Other commonly-seen health links, via related nerve interference, are digestive problems, bowel and bladder issues, and disturbed sleep patterns.

The heart’s health and blood circulation Today, we start a series on heart health and first look at blood circulation within the heart itself.

Coronary (heart) circulation starts with oxygen-rich blood from the aorta pumping into the left and right coronary arteries and then into the smaller blood vessels that bring oxygen and nutrients to heart muscle cells.

Any tissue receiving insufficient oxygen and nutrients will show stress and eventually die. When coronary circulation is restricted by plaques and clots this can lead to reduced circulation, causing angina and at worst a heart attack. The actual process by which plaques form is much more complex than

we are led to believe. In an attempt to give a simple explanation, we’re told circulating LDL cholesterol clogs coronary arteries much like a pipe getting blocked with fat.

The reality is quite different. The process of plaque formation starts with excess LDL cholesterol becoming trapped within the walls of arteries. The trapped cholesterol then oxidises and changes into a dangerous form, in what is an already inflammatory environment. White blood cells then gobble up the cholesterol and become fatty foam cells that form streaks in arteries, leading to the first step of atherosclerosis – the blocking of heart arteries. This is a dual process of oxidation of cholesterol and artery inflammation. The answer is an anti-inflammatory diet

and supplements rich in antioxidants, especially grape seed extract and vitamin E to reduce cholesterol oxidation and associated inflammation. Additionally, we add nutrients that help optimise blood flow and general blood vessel health.

While medication to lower cholesterol is very effective, some cannot tolerate medication while others would prefer a more natural solution. An option is to use natural compounds, such as palm fruit and citrus extracts, to help balance cholesterol. We’ll talk more on natural cholesterol management next week. Driving a known route creates familiarity and I sometimes miss what is new because I’m so used to it. I caught a bus recently to go to Hamilton, a route I am very familiar with. I was fascinated and entertained by how much I’d missed when I was driving a car. The bus was higher, I saw more of the landscape, new views and a bigger perspective; and I could focus more because I wasn’t driving.

All of this came about merely by changing the way I was looking at the passing scenery. If we treat life in the same way and realise everything that happens to us is designed to teach us what we need to know on our journey, we begin to make choices that can create entirely different perspectives.

The statistics are sobering, but also highlight what an important part insurance plays in the day-today lives of people and business.

It is a fact people are claiming more now, than ever before, on their policies. That the claim growth rates are well in excess of say 10 years ago, suggests the gap

between personal insurance held and the risk exposure is narrowing.

Most New Zealand families with a mortgage have life insurance, but only one in five New Zealand families have income protection cover.

Most New Zealand twoincome families would be ineligible for a sickness benefit if they were off work for an extended period, because of the family income test.

Sharing sustainable success stories to all A conference in Tauranga on Thursday aims to reinvigorate the push for more sustainable businesses in the region.

Tauranga Sustainable Business Network co-ordinator Tania Gaborit says the Bay of Plenty has a strong background in sustainability – with many of the founders of the network from the region – and is encouraged by the commitment of some businesses to become truly more sustainable.

Tania says while some businesses are put off by the perceived cost of sustainability she reckons it is not only good for a company’s reputation, but can also boost the bottom line by saving on waste disposal, power or water.

The Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority states most businesses can shave at least 20 per cent off their energy cost with smarter energy use, says Tania.

Sustainability can also be used as a platform for innovation and growth –

just as Rotorua’s BioBrew has done with its probiotics for cattle, to boost animal nutrition, which won SBN’s national innovation award. BioBrew director Andre Prassinos will talk at the Inspiring Sustainability in the Bay conference on February 27.

Other speakers at the sustainability conference include business commentator Rod Oram and Niki Harre, whose book ‘Psychology for a Better World’ offers tips on changing your mind-set to encourage sustainable behaviour.

A handful of Bay of Plenty business leaders, who are previous national SBN awards finalists, will also share their stories, including Marty Hoffart (Environment Education for Resource Sustainability Trust) and Jo Wills (Community Energy Network.)

Nik – who ditched his long-serving accounting career to set up his own sustainability business 18 months aog with brother Phil – is one of a handful of keynote speakers at the inaugural Inspiring Sustainability business conference in Tauranga next week.

Organised by Tauranga’s Sustainable Business Network, the conference aims to reinvigorate interest in business sustainability in the region.

For Nik, sustainability is more than just looking after the environment – it’s about businesses offering accessible services that make a positive social impact.

With competing commitments to quality, service and profitability, Nik understands why many businesses do not focus on sustainability – but says businesses that don’t are ultimately short-changing future generations.

It’s this perspective which prompts Nik and Phil to offer people free home assessments to improve their household’s green footprint. “When I talk to anyone

“We want to make sure we get it all right,” says Cole, who describes the Baypark round as a

“cr*p weekend” after blowing the gearbox and hitting a barrier wall when he went too deep on a qualification round on Saturday.

Despite hard work by his team to repair the car, he had to pull out.

It was the second year running he’s had struck problems at his home round, with Cole knocked out last year when he crashed and broke his steering rack.

Altezza following on from his surprise success at Baypark, where he finished top of all Western Bay drivers in sixth place at his first event of the year.

He was only planning to return for a one-off event at Baypark this time, but encouragement to continue and offers of support is prompting him to return for the fourth round of the series in Taupo.

Switching up seats paying off for Osborne says, keeping details of the adjustments close to his chest.

The former top super stock racer is delighted with the Baypark Busters’ success, winning the super stock team’s championship at Palmerston North in a fierce battle with the Rotorua Rebels.

After spending most weekends on the road for the last four months, Mark decided to forego last weekend’s one-off Pacific Kart Sports South Pacific Super

With 20 seasons in speedway already under his belt, Mark Osborne decided it was time to switch seats two years ago.

Since cutting his teeth at age 15, racing a production saloon in Rotorua, Mark has gone on to have a long and successful competitive career in super stocks – but his decision two years ago to swap to super saloons is definitely paying off.

In January, Mark, who is racing as a contracted driver for ASB Baypark Speedway this season, claimed the national super saloon championship title for the second year running and is leading the North Island’s seven-round Burger King Pro Dirt Series.

“What an amazing feeling it was to win back-toback,” says Mark, about the thrill of claiming the 1NZ title again.

Mark credits his success, which also saw him claim the Auckland championship in January, to a combination of many things – including a top team behind him, solid sponsors and his car.

“Definitely the car – we’ve got a bloody good car thanks to the work Shane McIntyre has done building it for us with a fantastic chassis.”

Mark, who lives in Christchurch, flies north every weekend to compete.

He’s also had a lucky escape in his travels – avoiding major problems a fortnight ago when his car trailer caught alight near Pukekohe, as his crew left Auckland for the third round in Gisborne.

“We were lucky enough to get the car out with just a burnt front guard and left front tyre, but the trailer was not so pretty,” says Mark.

After a disappointing sixth placing in Gisborne’s feature race, Mark went on to win the fourth round the next night at Baypark – ahead of Tauranga drivers Dean Waddell and Gavin Dyer.

“I’ve been getting podiums in the series, but this was my first win so it was great,” says Mark.

His success continued in Palmerston North the following weekend where he cemented his place at the top of the series, winning the feature race along with the ‘pole shuffle’ event.

“What a weekend. Winning both events was wicked,” says Mark, who attributes part of his success to some major adjustments done to his car.

“We tried something new with our Hypermac that we had never done before and it worked a treat,” he

“It takes a lot of time, so it’s good to have one weekend off,” says Mark, who expects to be racing again at Baypark in March.

He’s one of three drivers contracted to Baypark who’ve won national speedway championships this season.

In a spin over wheels show Months of organisation will pay off this Sunday, when Bay motoring enthusiasts are treated to a display of some of the region’s finest and most interesting wheels.

Chris Churchward, from Pacific Toyota, will be promoting the dealership’s support for the community at this Sunday’s Show Off Your Wheels display at Mount Maunganui College.

Organised as a fundraiser by Mount Maunganui Rotary Club, the Show Off Your Wheels event is just that – a chance for car-lovers to show off the vehicles they love at Mount Maunganui College.

Les Creswell said about 175 vehicles are confirmed for individual sites, with more registrations still coming in.

Les expects highlights to include the sleek and sporty Denny Hulme Supercar, along with two of the fire service’s newest rescue vehicles, seven immaculately restored military vehicles, vintage traction engines and a group of VW Combi vans.

“We also have a number of Segways that the public will be able to have a play on for a gold coin donation, so I’m sure a lot will love that.”

Visitors will also have a chance to kick the tyres on cars offered by a handful of dealerships, with each using it as a chance to showcase something different.

Duncan and Ebbett sales manager Glenn Cranston says it is a great chance to show people the prestige brands it is offering with Jaguar, Rover and Volvo at

the dealership, which opened in Hewletts Rd in December.

“We’re excited about the chance it gives us to let people know what we are doing.”

Pacific Toyota sales manager Chris Churchward will be displaying a handful of the vehicles it sponsors community groups with.

“As part of Toyota’s ethos for supporting the community, we have always provided vehicles for rescue helicopter, surf lifesaving and other organisations that are helping make a difference, so we will have some of them on display.”

Other dealerships taking part are Farmer Motor Group, Coombes BMW, and Bay of Plenty Honda.

Works to cause delays Motorists are being warned to be patient on State Highway 2, as road resurfacing works start on Wednesday.

The works will take place on seven different sites

along with the highway, north of Katikati, for about a week.

The NZ Transport Agency says there are minimal delays expected, but traffic

will be managed through a manual stop/go operation during the day.

The works will start at 9am and will continue through until 4pm daily.

Racing is on The text books are out and the helmets are on for 25 of the region’s principals bravely stepping up to race in the second SunLive Principals’ Challenge.

Twenty-five principals will be familiarising themselves with their allocated mini stock car in preparation for racing on the ASB Baypark track next weekend.

And this year – the speedway amateurs are hoping to compete in front of thousands of young supporters with free entry on offer to children 15 years old and under.

Event coordinator Leona Smith says this is to encourage as many children to experience the event as possible, and cheer on their respective principal.

“These principals will be after all the support they can get. And the children will love it – it’s really an exciting race.”

Replacing the banner challenge in 2012 is a best dressed school competition, with the winning school receiving a $1000 advertising package from More FM. Of the 25 drivers, nine are new to the race this year, and a rise in female drivers will make for a more even playing field, says Leona.

This year each of the principals has chosen a child-related charity. The winning principal’s charity will receive

Nik House says competing in the event is a great way to build school pride and rally community support.

Controversial competition Controversy dogged Mount Maunganui Primary principal Damien Harris’ near-miss in snatching The SunLive Principals’ Challenge crown in 2012 – now’s he back for revenge.

Among a crowd of thousands, supporters of Damien blamed his demise on the winning car, driven by Welcome Bay Primary School principal Nik House, gaining some extra ground on a red light which was not picked up by the ofďŹ cials. “There was a little bit of controversy,â€? says Damien, with a laugh, who reckons controversy adds to the event. “Whenever there is competitiveness there is going to be controversy. “I was just about to pass him – well not really, he was a

bit ahead of me, but it’s my story and I’m sticking with it,� jokes Damien, who is rearing to out-spin fellow Bay principals in this year’s SunLive Principals’ Challenge which is returning to ASB Baypark on March 1.

Damien says his December 2012 jaunt, which saw him place second, was heaps of fun and “was like a bucket list sort of activity for me�.

But now he’s getting serious about his return ride. “I’m aiming for ďŹ rst place this year. “I’ll be spending a bit of time on the iPad, playing those driving games you get – I think that’s going to really set me up quite well.â€?

Putting girl power to the pedal “Watch out boys!�

That’s the message coming from Janet Blaauw and the other women competing in next Saturday’s SunLive Principals’ Challenge at ASB Baypark.

Janet, Te Ranga School’s acting principal, is taking the challenge to be the region’s fastest Mini Stock racing principal very seriously.

In fact, last weekend she headed to the Matamata speedway track to practise racing in the 1200cc powered mini racers. “I really enjoyed it and it was worthwhile because by my third race I had gone from being well and truly left behind to being just behind the last car.�

Reducing sugar only part of the solution Raising taxes on, or getting rid of, sugary drinks, and sugar bashing, generally are hot topics in our daily news fare.

While reducing sugar in our diet to acceptable levels makes complete common sense, widespread condemnation of sugar is not.

Our approach has always been to accept that all biologically safe food has its place; and our job is to help people to be as well informed as possible, to be able to make the right choices.

This demonising of sugar is a case in point and just too simplistic as a principle. Let’s have a look at why.

People go looking for food that has low-sugar levels, with many not realising any food containing carbohydrate will produce glucose, which is the highest ranked sugar for raising blood-sugar levels.

The Glycaemic Load principle allows us to compare how different types of food affect our blood-sugar levels – this is highly relevant in our world where diabetes looms large. Let’s take a look at a few examples.

A bowl of cornflakes (50g) has less than one teaspoon of sugar. It is 80 per cent processed carbohydrate; and using the GL method will make the equivalent of five teaspoons of sugar.

Sushi has very little or no added sugar and the carbohydrate in the rice portion, of say four rolls, will make the equivalent of four teaspoons of sugar.

A panini filled with chicken and brie, with cranberry sauce, will only contain small amounts of sugar.

Because of the high quantity of white flour, the 100g panini itself will make the equivalent of five teaspoons of sugar.

A ripe banana will make the equivalent of up to two teaspoons of sugar.

This exercise only serves as a guide and does not take into account other factors, like the action of fructose. Nonetheless, it does illustrate why taking this narrow vision of focusing on sugar only provides a small part of the overall picture.

Plum-tastic taste Now is a good time to preserve those plums.

We still had a few on our tree last week so I made a spicy plum sauce.

It’s lovely with pork. I’ve had to add a few dates to bulk up this recipe and pretty much threw in what I had to add extra flavour.

You can’t go wrong really; it’s a matter of hit and miss and cross your fingers. And it turned out magnificent, if I do say so myself!

Ingredients 2.5kg plums, pitted 1kg dates, pitted 3 onions, peeled and diced 2tsp chilli powder (optional) 10-12 cloves garlic, crushed and peeled 1 Tbsp salt 600g brown sugar 3 cups malt vinegar 1 cup water

Method Wash the plums and shake off excess water.

In a large preserving pot, place all of the ingredients and reduce down.

Then lower heat and stir so it doesn’t stick.

Simmer on low for about 20 minutes until nice and mushy. Once cooled, place in jars or in the fridge in an airtight container. I like mine nice and thick. If you prefer yours as a saucy sauce, place in a blender before you put it into jars.

My magical summer medley The summer weather has definitely arrived and the sun seems to be at its hottest, ripening fruit and vegetables ready for harvest. As I mentioned last week, sometimes there is a glut of produce to use up or give away.

Barbecue chicken and corn salsa Gluten free 2-3 serves Ingredients 200g boneless, skinless chicken thighs 2 cloves garlic, chopped 2 Tbsp lime juice 2 Tbsp soya sauce 1 heaped Tbsp brown sugar 3 Tbsp barbecue sauce 1 capsicum, diced 2 large tomatoes, diced 2 corn cobs, cooked and dehusked ½ red onion, diced 2 avocados ¼ cup chopped chives (optional) 2-3 Tbsp olive oil, or avocado oil Method Place the chicken thighs in sealable plastic bag. Mix together garlic, lime juice, soya sauce, brown sugar and barbecue sauce and place in the plastic bag.

Smash down the thighs with the back of a fry pan to flatten slightly. This makes it easier to cook and infuses some flavour.

Leave resting in the bag for a few moments while you prepare the salsa in a large bowl.

If you cut everything up so it’s the same size, it looks better when mixed together.

Add diced avocados last with the chives and just a hint of salt and pepper and a slash of olive oil.

Remove the chicken thighs from the liquid and barbecue. Once turned, baste with rest of the juices from the bag. When the thighs are cooked, serve alongside the salsa piled onto a plate. Serve with a crisp, hoppy-style pilsner.

That’s exactly what happened to me when an old friend dropped off a bag of fresh goodies from his garden. I accepted the gift; and not knowing just quite what to do with it all, or what was inside, left the bag sitting on the bench to carry on toiling away in the garden.

I ended up working long into the evening.

So, at the end of the day, I needed something quick and easy. Remembering the bag of fresh goodies, I opened it up and emptied the contents – corn, ripe avocados, tomatoes and capsicums – all freshly picked and brimming with goodness.

The surprise element reminded me of years long ago when I entered culinary competitions, where you were given a box of mystery ingredients, knowing there was something like pork or venison inside.

Frozen banana glory Frozen bananas are fantastic! They are great for adding to smoothies to make them ice-cold. This is particularly helpful if you’re not adding dairy or milk to your drink. Frozen bananas also make a delicious healthy ice-cream alternative. Blend a couple of frozen bananas with some coconut milk, and add your favourite dressings. Try it - it’s better than it sounds.

Remember to peel and chop your ripe bananas before freezing.

You had a set time of about 45 minutes to create and serve four courses from as many of the ingredients in the box as you could.

The most creative and tasty dishes were literally invented on the spot, as you were marked on various skills and

fundamentals of the profession, as well as presentation, flavour and use of the ingredients.

So about 40 minutes later, I was sitting down to this week’s barbecue chicken and corn salsa – a gold medal performance.

A swimming we all will go The last month has been extremely busy for parents with children and preschoolers, settling children into school and childcare, going back to work for some; and setting the pattern for another year.

It’s been the same at Kidiwise.

This year, having a new van for pick up and delivery, we’ve introduced swimming lessons.

Swimming lessons for preschoolers with an experienced instructor are very important. The instructor helps the children concentrate and focus on the correct ways to float and kick their legs, while maintaining the children’s confidence in the water. Concentration and focus are the two main

fundamentals to be able to learn.

Fear of the water is a common phobia among children. Introducing children to the water in the appropriate way overcomes this fear. Being taught correctly makes the water a fun learning experience.

The lessons should be ‘little and often’ to keep the experience and what they’ve learned prominent in the children’s minds.

We’re doing two lessons a week in 10-week blocks. The children are soon jumping in with their floaties on; floating and kicking their little legs.

Learning to swim is a quick way to build children’s confidence.

‘Success breeds success’ and children need confidence to learn new activities and skills.

With swimming lessons, children can amaze themselves at their achievements in the water.

We’ve noticed children come back to Kidiwise and take on new challenges with confidence.

Feeling confident also helps the children in their social interactions with peers and adults.

Helping children build confidence in the water is so important for their journey through life.

Children set to ‘go wild’ at carnival

Children and their families are invited to go wild this weekend at City Church Tauranga’s annual completely-free carnival.

City Church Tauranga’s event – Kids Go Wild – is happening for the 21st time on Sunday, where children can, as the name suggests, go wild.

There is a whole raft of activities on offer, including rock climbing, chair-o-plane, Ferris wheel and mini jeep rides – and it’s all completely free.

There will also be free candy floss, ice-cream and lollies on offer during the event.

Organiser Jene Hamahona says each year the carnival attracts about 3000 children and families of all ages from across the Bay of Plenty.

Jene says there are not many places that put on a free carnival.

“We like people to know that churches are more than just places on Sunday. We like our community to know that our church really wants people to have fun and enjoy life. That’s the main inspiration behind the event.

“It’s completely unique. There’s nothing like it.”

The Kids Go Wild event is on Sunday, February 23, from 4pm to 7pm at City Church Tauranga in Otumoetai.

Batting for the girls - a daughter’s dream After two years playing in worn, secondhand gear, Katikati Cricket Club’s only girls’ team is hosting a one-game fundraiser this weekend to fund upgrading of their equipment.

Katikati Cricket Club junior girls’ team member Kathryn Turnbull, with father Simon, who coaches his daughter’s side.

The team formed when Catherine Turnbull, now 13, told her father Simon she wanted to play cricket.

“I’d started watching cricket and wanted to play but I needed support to start, so I asked Dad, and he said ‘Yes’.”

Simon told Catherine if she could find other girls to play, he’d coach them.

“Less than a week later KKCC had their first allgirls team. Gear was gathered from other team kits and we set about learning the game.”

Two years later, six of the nine girls have represented the region at junior or senior levels; and Catherine and teammate Holly Topp made the Northern Districts U15 side for Wanganui’s national tournament early this year.

But Catherine’s team still plays with old, ill-fitting so Simon is organising a Katikati Girls Cricket Charity T20 Match this Sunday to fundraise.

“Now they’ve shown the commitment, we want to get the team gear that fits them and they can use for quite awhile,” says Simon, who played the sport in Indonesia.

This is Simon’s first time coaching the opposite sex.

“It’s been fantastic – they didn’t have previous knowledge of the game and they’re still learning – this means they’re very receptive and take on-board what you say.”

Although, he admits giggles and talk of boyfriends fill practice breaks, “but you get used to it”.

Simon’s now appealing to businesses and the public to sponsor a charity match player for $100 each.

Age is just a number for cats Success on Valentine’s Cats, kittens, dogs and puppies are enjoying new forever homes having been adopted through Tauranga SPCA’s Valentine's Day Adoptathon last weekend.

Operations manager Margaret Rawiri says a lot of families visited the shelter on Saturday to take advantage of their adoption specials.

“There was a rush of people through in the morning.

We adopted 16 kittens and one dog that had been here for a while. I don't think anyone walked out without anything.”

Margaret says many of the people who came through were visiting the SPCA for the first time.

“You can always tell if they have been here before because they know where to go and what to do.

“It's great getting more people here for the first time. It's all good exposure for us.”

Michael Cowen and sister Danielle (pictured) were among the visitors to the shelter, and were in search of a feline companion Danielle’s cat. “I thought it would be cool to have a little friend around the house.

I wanted to take home about six to 10 but we don't have that much room at home.”

This weekend Tauranga SPCA is encouraging potential pet owners to look past an animal’s age when considering a new family member.

Operations manager Margaret Rawiri says the animal shelter has a lot of adult cats that would make great pets, but are very often are overlooked in favour of ‘cute’ kittens.

She’s reminding people kittens are only small and cute for so long, and there are many benefits to choosing an older animal.

“There are a lot of advantages in choosing an adult cat – particularly that they are already housetrained.”

Contrary to popular belief, adult cats are quite adaptable to new homes and owners, says

Margaret, who would love to see all of her senior cats adopted out this weekend – following this edition’s SPCA Adopt-a-thon.

Some of the adult cats have stayed at the shelter for more than three months, says Margaret.

“It’s quite sad – there are some lovely cats in there, but unfortunately people tend to overlook them.”

All cats available for adoption at Tauranga SPCA – including the ones featured in this special – have been de-sexed, micro-chipped, vaccinated, treated for fleas, worms and checked to ensure they do not have any injuries or illnesses that require continuing treatment.

“They are basically just sitting here ready to go, waiting for some new owners.”

“We like to say cats will choose their owners and you often see them come up to people when they come in and literally choose them by being affectionate.”

That said – kitten season is in full swing and Margaret will be more than happy to see any of the shelter’s kittens find a new forever home.

“We have about 70 kittens in the shelter and in foster care.

Kitten season is always hard for us, because we get so overwhelmed with kittens. But it’s just reminding owners to de-sex their cats – it’s so important.”

Lend a helping hand So you want to help Tauranga SPCA’s homeless four-legged friends, but have no space for another pet?

That’s great – there are still plenty of ways animal lovers can make a difference for the furry and homeless.

SPCA operations manager Margaret Rawiri appreciates not everyone can offer a long-term home for one of her homeless animals, and thanks them for making a conscious decision.

“The worst thing would be for people to adopt an animal and weeks later discover they cannot look after it, and bring it back.”

She says there are many other ways to help the shelter.

A simple way to support the SPCA is through a donation of food, kitty litter, money or blankets. The SPCA uses a large amount of food every day and donations are taken on-site or in SPCA bins at many supermarkets.

“We go through huge amounts of

kitty litter and food each week.”

Another option is to volunteer your time to work at the centre and help bring a little more love to the many cats and dogs under the SPCA’s care – with volunteers needing to have a compassionate nature with a willingness to give.

Tauranga SPCA offers different types of volunteer options, from cat and dog care to becoming a member of the Dog Squad – a group of people out and about with their dogs visiting rest homes and to help raise money and the profile of the centre.

Those who are able to accommodate an animal can help with shortterm foster care for kittens and puppies so they reach the required age, weight or level of health before they can be adopted out. Occasionally, volunteers with trade skills in areas such as building, plumbing, electrical work or plumbing are also needed. Every March, Envirohub Bay of Plenty promotes Sustainable Backyards Month to highlight, celebrate and support the fantastic range of environmental initiatives run by individuals and community organisations throughout the region.

A keynote feature this year is the Sustainable Home and Gardens Trail – a series of eight open homes throughout the Western Bay of Plenty and Tauranga during March.

The public will have the opportunity to view new eco-buildings made from sustainable materials, as well as renovated homes focused on

residential sustainable living solutions. These homes include features such as solar power, rain water collection, permaculture gardens and worm farms.

The trail map can be downloaded at www.envirohub.org.nz Tauranga Herb Society’s Robin Garret says “If one can measure an event by new knowledge and enthusiasm gained, this event is an outstanding success”.

“Some even make new friendships, as like-minds are attracted and much networking is achieved.”

The Sustainable Home and Gardens Trail forms part of the ninth Annual Sustainable Backyards Calendar, with more than 70 workshops, tours and fun family events on offer.

Overnight harvest festival planned for gardeners An overnight gardener-friendly harvest festival is happening at the Arty House on Te Puna’s Wairoa Rd from noon Saturday, March 1, to 12.30pm Sunday, March 2.

Gardeners with excess produce are encouraged to bring it along for the share or trade table.

Festivities include a range of workshops organised, from harvesting and processing ‘edible weeds’ to a journey

from seed back to seed, by gardening guru Claire Mummery, to inspire the most experienced gardeners.

Psychoactive products policy out for public feedback Council has released its draft Psychoactive Substances Policy and is calling for submissions from the public.

The main points which Council seeks feedback on are: • Restricting the location of premises selling psychoactive products to the central business areas of Te Puke and Katikati (excluding all other settlements in the Western Bay District) • Restricting the proximity of retailers selling the products to no fewer than 750 metres from each other • Restricting the proximity of retail premises selling psychoactive products to no fewer than 100 metres from educational facilities, libraries and medical centres • Limiting operating hours to six days a week, Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 5pm daily.

Last year Government introduced the Psychoactive Substances Act. Fiscal liability for those making poor decisions?

Perhaps Tauranga City councillor Matt Cowley, in his Weekend Sun column â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Deep Budget Massage Beginsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; (February 7), should try some basic brain cell exercises before proposing a 4.7 per cent stormwater levy on rates to continue for 10 years.

Council could try a little common sense and not hand out building consents for low-lying,

ďŹ&#x201A;ood-prone areas.

While theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re about it, they could also contemplate the possibility ratepayers should be their ďŹ rst priority; not the whims of property developers.

There may well be some basic stormwater issues that need addressing, but this does not excuse council for continuing to allow housing and industrial developments in swamp

areas of Papamoa and Tauriko.

I suggest councillors and their advisors share personal ďŹ scal liability for their poor decisions.

This way council might be more prudent in getting sound geological and engineering advice before granting consents; and they might also monitor such consents carefully to ensure adherence to consent conditions.

Ratepayers are not there to fork out funds for council incompetence.

We need digital voting Possible excessive rates rises, what a shock? Not really, they do it every time.

Problem is we vote for people that most of us donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know; we get a paragraph about them in the election pamphlet and a few local meetings when thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an election on.

They then run our councils for us for the next three years, usually going back on any policies promised.

Why canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t we tell them how much we want to pay and what decisions we want, followed by referendum on all major decisions using computers?

Their job should be to explain the argument to us and then we vote on it.

Remember they are, on the whole, no more intelligent than the average person. We can vote online; my bank

has a system where they know who I am when I log onto my account and only I can access it.

We all have access to libraries with computers, if not our own computer.

Compared to the millions they seem to waste, I imagine setting this up wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem expensive.

If 40 per cent of people voted on an issue, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot better than the Tauranga Mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 10 per cent backing of the possible voting electorate.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure more would vote, including the disfranchised younger voters, giving us better democracy.

Can the people really do any worse?

Our councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plan for flooding is...

Y James is correct in pointing out that the ďŹ&#x201A;ooding issue is a legacy issue â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the cumulative result of past decisions. The current councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s objectives are to: 1. Address the issue cost-effectively.

2. Not leave a similar legacy for future generations.

To achieve these two objectives, the council is creating a 2D ďŹ&#x201A;ood model of the city to enable it to identify and prioritise problem areas and appropriate solutions â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this modelling will be completed

by the end of 2014. The council has decided (by majority decision), to fund the resultant work programme via a ratepayer â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;levyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

As proposer of the motion, my thinking was: 1) It is more equitable to address â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;legacyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; issues via rates rather than debt.

2) Any levy should not be token (ďŹ&#x201A;ooding is possibly a $100 million-plus issue), but should be â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;affordableâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

3) We should commence collecting as soon as possible.

Currently, the proposed levy will be part of TCCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2014/2015 Annual Plan consultation process.

I would encourage all those who disagree with the levy proposal to submit their alternative approach to dealing with the issue.

And with regard to Y Jamesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; comments apportioning blame, perhaps it is worth reďŹ&#x201A;ecting on the idea that it is our collective fault (as ratepayers), because we elected the decision-makers who left us the ďŹ&#x201A;ooding legacy.

Driver fatigue is real issue So 20,000 motorists have been ticketed because the police hierarchy have chosen play with the long-established speed limit tolerances.

Surely police would have been better to put their resources into targeting say 500 motorists, who were doing something more serious?

At first glance it is difficult to challenge the logic, but we should think it through.

If one crashes into a brick wall at a six per cent lower speed, then no doubt the vehicle will be less

damaged. But will the occupants be less dead?

I think not hitting the wall should be the objective.

The open road 10km tolerance has been accepted for many decades, and this makes me wonder if the police have really thought things through.

A higher average speed means less congestion; and lowering your speed makes quite a difference in a trip to Wellington, of say seven hours, which means the drive takes some 30 minutes longer.

I believe driver fatigue is a far

greater hazard than a lower speed.

Also, with lower speed limits each vehicle has a six per cent greater chance of being hit by another vehicle because its still on the road.

Further, it is impossible either way to prove that lives will be saved because the six per cent reduction in top speed will mean none of the crashes in the present scenario will actually happen.

Although, surely, there will be a number of different crashes under new scenarios as well.

I suspect the ticketing is more about a police feel-good factor than reality. Pity about the 20,000 relatively innocent drivers.

Sadly, we have some of the worst ‘parents’ in the world living right here in NZ. You watch their ugly stories unfold on the television or read about them in the newspapers.

Teenagers, in particular, should be discouraged from having children.

Route K:

Lining up plan for railway

Questions still remain Now we’ve been advised it is proposed to transfer ownership of Route K to the New Zealand Transport Agency, it would be great to know the finer points - as I suspect it is not as straightforward as it first looks.

I understand the transfer of ownership means Turret Rd, along with the Turret Rd bridge will be transferred to back to TCC; and this in itself creates yet another issue, as I believe the ratepayers will then be responsible for the majority of the cost of widening this road and also the bridge.

TCC councillor Bill Grainger’s constant desire for an underpass

through the Maungatapu Roundabout could well end up negatively affecting Tauranga ratepayers.

In the event the underpass is built, effectively all it will achieve is getting traffic to the next point of congestion faster; and this will be at Turret Rd and the bridge.

Maybe a better outcome for Tauranga ratepayers would be immediately removing the Route K debt by negotiating a better outcome for the Welcome Bay underpass, rather than leaving it on the council books for 20-plus years?

I strongly endorse the type of railway line initiative proposed in Val Carter’s letter ‘Rail rumblings’(Weekend Sun, January 24), which at least is thinking outside the square.

But unfortunately, even this proposal does not address the major traffic mess at Bayfair roundabout.

Another cost-effective solution may be to shift the existing railway line into the reserved

corridor behind the Owens Place shops, then ramp Matapihi Rd over the railway by installing a concrete-lidded box, say five metres wide by five metres high.

This could go 20 metres across the roadway with two lanes/footpath/ cycleway on one side, along with pedestrian access under the ramp across Matapihi Rd. At a maximum 50 metres from Owens Place, this provides a 1/10 gradient; and on Matapihi side

Gondola: A good idea I support M Stanley’s letter, suggesting a gondola on the Mount (or Mauao). Built professionally it would not be in any way an ‘eyesore’ and would be a very good tourist attraction.

As for J Budden (February 14), who arrived here in 1971, hardly gives him a lot of time to obviously learn the history on NZ. I am in my 82nd year,

Our cherished hill Mauao Among all of the letters protesting at the very thought of erecting a gondola on Mauao, no-one has sugggested it could be dangerous putting a gondola on a hill - for that is what Mauao is not a mountain.

Anyone who has seen the film ‘The Man who Climbed a Hill and came down a Mountain’ would be aware a mountain, to be recognised as such, has to be 1000 feet or 300 metres in height Mauoa is only 761 feet or 232 metres

high, so is well below mountain status.

Early Maori could not be expected to differentiate between a hill and a mountain but as they are so fond of changing names, perhaps they would like to rename Mauao ‘Puke’, which is Maori for hill.

I’m sure Maori affinity with Mauao will not be affected by the knowledge it is a hill. After all, a rose by any other name.

Plain reason to buy smokes Plain packaging for cigarettes? What a non-sensical idea. As a long-time former smoker I know smokers buy the weed because they like smoking and are addicted to this feeling of enjoyment. I am sure most

smokers don’t purchase cigarettes because of the packets they’re in, but of what is inside; and the cost of each packet.

There are more positive actions which can be taken to discourage smoking of tobacco;

many which are already been in place, to the credit of those organisations responsible.

Aren’t we all tempted to, and do, buy plain-packed items in our supermarket.

Starring: Steve Coogan, Colm Meeny, Phil Cornwell - Dir: Declan Lowney The cinematic world is full of TV characters who made it onto the big screen only to go down in flames. Being the star of a thirty minute episodic TV show is a million miles away from making it through a plot-driven ninety minute film that requires things like character development and proper secondary players.

So it’s with great pleasure that I can say Steve Coogan, with his long-running creation Alan Partrdge, has absolutely nailed it.

Alan Partridge has a twenty year

history behind him, starting as a clueless sports reporter on The Day Today before going solo as a talk show host in Knowing Me Knowing You With Alan Partridge.

Since then there have been many ups and downs for the inspired creation, but even if none of that means a thing to you the pleasures of watching Alpha Papa will still be manifold.

Here we have Partridge working at a radio station which is about to be “rebranded” as hip and commercial. Threatened with dis-

It really should have worked. Robert De Niro as a mobster hiding under witness protection in France, Michelle Pfeiffer as his wife, Tommy Lee Jones as his “minder”. What's not to like?

Unfortunately The Family just wastes the whole thing, director Luc Besson unable to locate any of the expected comedy. And, what with the fish out of water culture clash potential of the family living in France, the character humour potential as De Niro gets delusions of grandeur and starts writing his memoirs and the mob humour potential as old Mafia colleagues send in the the troops, there was plenty.

What a shame. is Mystery Road a well-made if slightly selfconcious Australian thriller.

He's an art curator, she's a Texas cowgirl he enlists to help sell an obnoxious wealthy collector (Alan Rickman) a fake Monet. The script is from the Coen brothers but, as far as I'm aware, was an old commission job that sat on a shelf for a long time. With good reason.

The light frothy formula for movies of this sort is devilishly tricky to nail and this film almost completely fails to do so.

What did they actually do?

It is believed almost every New Zealand family has a relative directly involved in active service in World War 1 – in which more than 100,000 New Zealanders served.

Today, many families possess no more than a tokenfaded sepia-toned picture of a young man in military uniform, a medal, or tattered letters and postcards – but few have any details of that young man’s personal war story.

Dave Blanshard is encouraging descendants to find out more by using Archives NZ – where military records of New Zealanders who served in WW1 are available free of charge.

“These records are in the process of being transferred to the New Zealand Archive in Wellington.

The massive task of transferring musty old paper files to computerised data storage is now well advanced, with the goal of it being completed later this year for the centenary of the outbreak of WW1 in August.”

Details such as when a man served, in what role and battles, wounds and burial sites are available as long as the full name under which the person enlisted is given, says Dave.

“Other details such as date of birth, district where enlistment took place and, best of all, a service number can speed up the search.

“But they should tell when and where individuals joined up, the unit they were posted to, dates of promotions and/ or punishments, when and where any wounds requiring hospital treatment was received, decorations awarded; and, if appropriate, the location of a war grave.”

The Rotary Club of Tauranga Sunrise is once again on the hunt for high quality art to sell in their Treasured Art auction and exhibition.

The club is now well into collecting art from donors and artists and already has a number of works from a range of sought-after artists. Once again, proceeds will be donated to the Foundation for Youth Development's KiwiCan programme.

On May 15, pieces of work will go under the hammer, with further pieces on exhibition up for sale and a silent auction.

Each piece is put through a selection process to ensure the quality of art is extremely high.

The art is sold on a 50/50 commission basis, but some of the art is donated.

In the past, the works of well-known

artists such as Tauranga artists Arthur Dagley, Peter Wallers, Susan Harrison Tustain, Owen Dippie, Hayley Brown and many more have featured.

The invitation-only auction sees pieces sold to enthusiastic bidders at InghamSears Mercedes-Benz showroom.

The auction and exhibition has appealed to people changing or downsizing homes. And knowing the art is contributing to a worthwhile cause is often the point-of-difference for a donation. The planning committee is seeking more high quality work to add to the catalogue for this year’s event.

Kiwi Can is a life skills and values programme for five to 12 year olds, delivered in primary and intermediate schools. It teaches resilience, respect, integrity and manners.

Confidence in the market Real Estate statistics for January have been widely reported and it is great to see the confidence in the market currently.

The impact of the introduction of LVR restrictions has lessened slightly and we are seeing first home buyers coming back into the market in greater numbers again.

In the Papamoa/Mount market we saw an increase in volume and an increase in median sale price. This is typical of the holiday period where we have numerous ‘outsiders’ enjoying the lifestyle the Mount and Papamoa have to offer and either invest or relocate into the area.

The average number of days a property is on the market before it sells is steadily coming back and this reflects the supply and demand situation we are experiencing. As the number of property we have for sale decreases, buyers tend to have less choice and snap up a property that suits them quickly.

The short term future of residential real estate is looking bright. It is definitely a case of ‘steady as she goes’.

What is the purpose?

We often question the things that happen in our lives and the events we observe in the world.

Things like global warming and extreme weather, let alone wondering what motivates people to start bush ďŹ res.

With the chaos and uncertainty in our lives, we really need true inner peace and something to believe in; something solid on which we can base our life.

At Alpha we ask: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Why am I here?â&#x20AC;?, and: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Is there a purpose to life, or is this itâ&#x20AC;?? With all of the uncertainty, we have often lost the concept of right and wrong.

Of course this asks the question as to whether there really is a universal moral code. I mean what is wrong with the odd â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;white lieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;? Does it really matter as long as people are not harmed?

At Alpha we consider things like whether there really is something called sin or whether there is no

moral code at all, and perhaps we can all create our own standards for life.

Alpha is very stimulating and will allow you to ask the difďŹ cult questions about your life, about the world with its obvious good and evil.

We ask the ultimate questions of whether God does exist? And more importantly: What is God like? Is it possible to have a relationship with God? What is a Spirit-filled church? (Part 1)

A few weeks ago in The Weekend Sun (January 10, 2014 edition) John Kerr wrote an editorial entitled ‘The great work of the Spirit’, where the question of how we Biblically identify a true movement and work of God the Holy Spirit was explored.

That got me thinking more about this important subject, and during the next two submissions, I wish to explore the question: What does a Spirit-filled local church look like? What does the Bible – which is God’s final authority on these matters – say about this?

Firstly, evidence of a local church which is indwelt and empowered by God the Holy Spirit would be where there is a very clear and unambiguous focus on the Person and work of Jesus Christ.

In John 16:14 Jesus – speaking of the Holy Spirit – said: “He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you”.

The Holy Spirit dos not glorify Himself, nor does He glorify an individual, or individuals, in the local church.

Rather, He always exalts Christ – who He is, and what He has done.

Secondly, a local church that is “full of the Holy Spirit” is an assembly or

gathering of believers who are all, individually, converted to Christ.

What does ‘converted to Christ’ mean? It means they have recognised their need for a Saviour from their sin, and have personally placed their trust (faith) in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.

Conversion is entirely the work of God. The most powerful thing the Holy Spirit does is convert dead sinners to faith in Christ. In John 3:5, Jesus answered: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God”. In short, a Spirit-filled church is one filled with regenerate, converted, or born-again people.

A third sign of a Spirit-filled local church is where there is a deep love for God’s Word, the Bible. God Himself tells us being “filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18) and “the word of Christ dwelling richly” in believers (Colossians 3:16), go hand-in-hand.

Practically speaking, a love for God’s Word will be shown by a love for hearing and reading the Bible, a desire to discuss the Bible, a reverence for the Bible, a church governed by the authority of the Bible, and a people being transformed by the Bible.

In short, in that local church it will be a priority to be equipped by the Word – over against being entertained.

Next time we’ll consider three more signs of a Holy Spirit-filled church.

Only one standard for truth There is only one standard, one plumb line for discerning truth from error, to distinguish that which is true from that which is almost true and to distinguish that which is false.

In Christianity, the Bible is our standard for truth. Anything that contradicts the Bible is false. Anything added to the Bible is false. If anything is subtracted from the Bible, it also results in something false.

For a false One World Church to be established in these last days, as detailed in the Book of Revelation, at least five things must happen.

Firstly, the Bible as God’s Word must be devalued as the final authority on matters of life and faith, and experiences must be elevated above Biblical doctrine and truth.

Secondly, the deity of Christ must be denied so the pathway to God can be broad and open to people from all religions.

Thirdly, unity in diversity must be encouraged through tolerance, at the expense of established Christian doctrines and truth.

Fourthly, there must become a focus on counterfeit miracles to affirm experiences and ministries, rather than God’s Word being the standard.

Fifthly, God’s love must be the focal point, while His holiness, righteousness and justice are ignored.

Let it be settled God’s Word is the standard for truth; that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God and the only way to God; that Biblical unity is the unity of the Spirit, not the unity of compromise; that miracles do not confirm anything, God’s Word confirms truth from error; and that God manifests His nature and character of love without compromising His nature and character of holiness. The Cross is the perfect manifestation of God’s love and holiness at work.

Let us “contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3).
