It is generally believed here at RR headquarters a road cone killed Moko. We have no proof of this, other than the fact Rogers insists his theory is the only plausible explanation for the famous dolphin’s death.

The body found and first identified by Rogers, at Matakana Island a few years ago, had no marks on it.

The last reported sighting of Moko alive was him playing with surfers, with a traffic cone, off the Mount Beach. A cone fits perfectly over the snout of a dolphin and would have completely sealed off his blowhole, once his nose was pushed inside. Plausible? Noone’s come up with any better explanation, so till they do, we blame the road cone.

Wild sport week

Sir Cheat’s team ran bawling from the playground. The same team that boasted they could sail in anything from 5 knots to 33. Run out of dodgy ways to get past TNZ? Throw in the towel and don’t race at all.

Meanwhile, we weren’t crying for Argentina. Sigmund slipped but it sure wasn’t Freudian. A 64-year-old has swum from Cuba to Florida in 53 hours. Too good to be true?

And finally, a Japanese professor thinks Hide and Seek should be an Olympic sport.

Oracle would be great at this, especially the part where they run and hide.

Cone zone

Thanks to readers for the response to the road cones comments last week, some on SunLive and some to this email.

Truck driver Malcolm bemoaned the signs everywhere about hi-viz rules and regulations, but reckons “those bloody amber beacons” are worse.

This week we were alerted to a whole range of problems traffic cones have created around world, and some issues closer to home.

In the Knowles’ household they are cheering for Team New Zealand in this America’s Cup, but across town at the in-laws’ place they are cheering for Oracle.

Andrew Knowles’ wife Cathy is sister to Murray Jones, trimmer and tactician with Oracle.

Murray’s been in six America’s Cups and won five, says Andrew.

But his brother-in-law has been on the Kiwi team before – sailing with Team New Zealand when it won the cup in 1995, and again in 2000. Then Murray sailed with Alinghi when it won the cup in 2003, and 2007, and he joined Oracle in 2010.

“We just happened, by chance,

to be in San Francisco in time for the first actual race in the Louis Vuitton Cup between team New Zealand and Luna Rossa about six weeks ago now,” says Andrew.

“Because of an inside contact with Oracle we were privileged to have a look around the Oracle boats.” Murray’s parents also live in Tauranga – and Andrew says his in-laws will be cheering for their son and the Oracle team.

“We are cheering for Team New Zealand.”

Andrew is also a sailor and competes in the Tornado class at the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club. Tornadoes are a five metre Olympic class catamaran, and still claimed the fastest production catamaran in the world.

For sailors in San Francisco the winds are completely different to the Tauranga westerlies.

“It’s a thermal breeze, totally different from to Tauranga’s equinoctial type breezes,” says Andrew.

The sea off the Northern California coast is cold, at about 12 degrees. And there is a large semiarid basin inland from the city of San Francisco that gets really hot.

“The hot air rising from that sucks all the cold air off the harbour and through the Golden Gate Bridge,” says Andrew.

“That’s why it’s usually the same direction every day and pretty similar strength.

“By changing the start time round a bit they can actually change the strength of the wind, like they did for the Youth America’s Cup – the one that the Tauranga boys won last week.”

New Zealand placed first and second with Portugal third.

Frugal five-day diet for charity Year 12 Mount Maunganui College student Danika Hotham is giving up the luxuries of chocolate and chippies for a fiveday diet of mostly rice to raise awareness of poverty.

Danika will live on $2.25 a day from September 23-27 as part of a worldwide initiative raising awareness of 1.2 billion people across the world living

below the internationally recognised poverty line.

While surfing the internet during the school holidays for activities to fill in time – Danika found Live Below the Line and thought living on a five-day frugal diet for charity sounded “like a good idea”.

The teenager will be donating the money she raises to ChildFund New Zealand. This is on top of her monthly donations to the African Orphan

Rescue – another charity she just decided to donate to out of kindness.

From September 23-27 Danika will have to give up her “reasonably good” diet – and occasional chocolate bar and chippies – for a diet that can be bought on a chal-

lenging $2.25 per day.

“It looks like I’ll be eating a lot of rice and carbs that will give me enough energy to get through the day.

“I try to eat a lot of fruit but fruit is quite expensive.”

$700 and plans to raise as much as she can in support of ChildFund New Zealand. She recently has recruited her friend Staci Orchard, who is also raising money for the children’s charity.

More than $100,000 has been raised nationally so far.

Radiation affects Tauranga The continuing crisis over radiation from the Tokyo Electric Power Co nuclear power station at Fukushima is being blamed for a drop in Japanese students staying in Tauranga.

During the last financial year, which ended in June, there were 41 students from Hitachi staying in Tauranga, down on the previous year by about 10 students, says Education Tauranga spokesman Geoff Butler, who talked at Tauranga City Council’s Projects

and Monitoring Committee meeting on Monday.

In reply to TCC councillor Wayne Moultrie questioning why the number has fallen, Geoff says he thinks it is due to concerns in Japan about radiation.

The TEPCO nuclear power plant at Fukushima prefecture is just 94km up the coast from Tauranga’s sister city of Hitachi.

Observers say three reactor cores have melted down following the damage created during the Japan earthquake and subsequent tsunami on March 11, 2011.

And reports are signalling the plant’s radioactive cores are contaminating groundwater, which is now flowing into the ocean.

Japanese officials recently proposed using an ice wall to try and prevent more radioactive groundwater entering the sea.

South Korea has banned the importation of all seafood from the eastern prefectures of Japan, saying it is difficult to determine if fish are contaminated using Japanese Government data.

Geoff says the decline in students from Hitachi is in line with a general decline in international student numbers to New Zealand.

In the Education Tauranga area, one student attended a seven-week high school programme, down from nine in the previous year. A second high school group visit was anticipated but did not eventuate.

Veterans’ deadline looms

Tauranga’s veterans are being reminded they only have a short time to apply, or reply to express interest, for the 70th anniversary of Monte Cassino.

New Zealand Battle of Crete Association president Deirdre Hauschild says veterans across the Bay have until September 30 to express interest with Veteran Affairs in attending next year’s event.

Next year is the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino and will be probably the last big event for World War II, unless something is done for the Liberation of Trieste, says Deirdre.

Deidre hopes Bay of Plenty RSAs, veterans and their families will be made aware of this deadline and have time to apply if they wish to.

Tauranga Boys’ College cyclist Theo Wright is riding high in the saddle after adding a national title to an already blockbusting year so far.

Following last weekend’s Secondary Schools Road Cycling Championships the Year 10 student is the toast of the college’s cycling community, being crowned National Hill Climb champion. Earlier this year he claimed the under 15 title at the Waikato Bay of Plenty Championships.

The two-day event in Mount Wellington saw the 14-yearold make light work of the 800m climb, with an elevation on 105m, ahead of a competitive field of more than 50 competitors in his under 15 grade.

Wright smashed the competition with a blistering 1 minute 55.93 seconds to finish well ahead of Auckland Grammar School student Aaron Wyllie, 1.59.93, and Oscar Elwothy from Takapuna Grammar, 2.03.57.

Theo says the fact second place was so far behind him makes the result even sweeter.

“That’s quite a lot [gap between first and second] and it’s because it’s quite a short time trial; it’s hard to gain ground.

“It was very hard at the start because you go straight into it. You are just balls out the whole time.”

Taking his first look at the course 24 hours out from the event, the cyclist remained confident in his preparation and ability after putting in the necessary kilometres on the hills around Tauranga.

“I was really confident because this was the one I really wanted to do well in.”

Theo’s title winning success catapulted him into overall championship contention with strong top 10 finishes in the criterion and road race, giving him a bronze medal to finish the weekend.

Tauranga Boys’ College Road Cycling team manager Johnathan Patchell says the college is “buzzing off the back of Theo’s double success”.

“I think for one of our cycle team to come third in the national championships is a great result as is being a nation champion.

“Theo beat our top under 16 rider Cullen Browne’s time by six seconds. So we have our under 15 rider out riding our under 16 rider – that’s pretty impressive.”

Fleeing man admits dairy robbery A Tauranga man has admitted to attempting to rob the Summit Superette armed with a pistol.

Harley William AnnasMcGillan, 23, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated robbery in Tauranga District Court. According to police, Annas-McGillan entered the superette on Waihi Rd at about 6.45am on August 2 with a disguise across his face.

Armed with a pistol and a knife, Annas-McGillan walked up to the counter and demanded money from the store attendant. The store attendant then produced a hockey stick and chased the 23-year-old out of the dairy and down Bellevue Rd towards the Brookfield New World.

CBD parking price to drop

Tauranga City Council is dropping parking prices in the central city parking zone from $3 to $2 per hour from Monday, September 23.

The change, announced on Monday night, follows complaints from business owners in the CBD that the $3 hourly fee is driving people out of the city, says Tauranga City Council transportation manager Martin Parkes.

Driver flees crashed car

Police are looking for the driver of a car that crashed down a bank into the middle of a fence in Maungatapu on Wednesday night.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Maungatapu Rd, just before the causeway, about 8pm. On arrival they found a white vehicle on its side in the middle of a fence and no driver.

Bush-running nudist loses appeal A self-proclaimed naturist has had his appeal against a conviction for mowing his lawns naked outside his 14th Ave home dismissed.

Andrew Pointon, 47, was convicted and fined a total of $650 in May after being found guilty of two counts of offensive behaviour – charges he pleaded not guilty to. Pointon was arrested and charged after members of the public complained about him gardening or mowing the lawns naked on January 5 and March 30, 2012.

Last Friday Pointon appealed the two guilty verdicts on the naked gardening and lawnmowing charges on the basis he had not been given proper legal representation. In a decision released this week Justice Paul Heath dismissed the appeal in the High Court in Tauranga, saying he is confident Pointon received a fair hearing.

Ben Cochrane travels to Japan next week.

Ben Cochrane will realise his dream of representing New Zealand at the International Surf Rescue Challenge in Japan this month – but it’s a vision that almost didn’t happen for the Mount Maunganui star.

Involved in the surf lifesaving scene since age five, an innocent game of dodgeball turned sour for the 17-year-old when he tripped over a ball and broke his left foot earlier this year.

Unaware of the break, Ben was limping and in crutches for two weeks before it became clear the injury was serious.

“It took about four weeks just to walk. It

took 10 weeks before I could run again.

“I had to swim with a pool foam so that I wouldn’t kick, just use my shoulders. I was very worried I wouldn’t be fit for the New Zealand team.”

Three weeks after the injury, Ben was listed in the Under 20 national team, and plans to compete in Japan this month began.

“I made the team providing I got better in time…but I was still afraid.”

The Mount College student has worked tirelessly to recover and be in top shape for the competition – he now completes 16 training sessions a week. This includes five swim sessions, two runs, two gym sessions, two board trainings, two kayaks, two iron man sessions and a yoga class.

Ben will compete with the 12-strong Under 20 New Zealand team, strongly represented by Mount, Papamoa and Omanu athletes, before returning home for a restful summer.

“I’d like to have a break for a while. Then there is the New Zealand Surf Lifesaving Nationals in March.

“There’s Worlds next year, for 18 years and under. I’m exactly the right age. So I’d like to win.”

The New Zealand Team is also represented

by Mount Maunganui’s Lisa Carrington, Papamoa’s Natalie Peat and Omanu’s Max Beattie. Ben leaves next week for the 13-day trip, with the ISRC running from September 19-23.

Stakes are high for big swing Forget about bragging rights, there is a lot more at stake this month if you pot a hole in one.

In a novel fundraiser organised by Tauriko School anyone has a shot at winning a house and land package or a VW Golf with The Lakes Classic Hole in One competition, which is being run at The Lakes sales pavilion every Sunday in September.

Tauriko School principal Suzanne Billington says it is shaping up to be a great community event, with strong support for the children and families at the school.

“The children are excited about being part of it. Our school believes in community and empowers children to learn about positive, active participation in community.”

The event, which will raise funds for the school and community group Homes of Hope, has been supported

by The Lakes owner Carrus, with a

$250,000 section; Classic Builders, with a $250,000 building package; and Farmer Motor Group, with the $59,000 VW Golf.

There are two weekends left, until the competition closes (September 22), for anyone to have a go at qualifying for the final (qualifying at the Lakes Sales Pavillion from 10am-2pm). Boy injured after horse kick

A Tauranga boy is in Waikato Hospital after being kicked in the head by a horse at the Tauranga Racecourse.

St John Ambulance paramedics were called to the racecourse in Greerton on Sunday where the 12-year-old boy was suffering head injuries after being kicked by the horse.

A Tauranga St John Ambulance spokesperson says the boy was leading the horse when it kicked him in the head. He was taken to Tauranga Hospital and later airlifted to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition. He is currently listed as stable in hospital.

Hit and run in Bellevue

Police are still looking for the van that hit a 16-year-old girl on Otumoetai Rd overnight on Wednesday.

Tauranga St John Paramedics were called to the accident about 12.30am after the girl was left on the side of a road. She was taken to Tauranga Hospital and later discharged.

Police Senior Sergeant Glenn Saunders says police are looking for a white people mover vehicle of some sort, in connection to the hit and run.

Chapter and verse Waipuna Hospice is set to benefit with a one-off fundraising sale of 18,000 books that have been donated from Aongatete second-hand bookstore Titles.

Tauranga Rotary Club received the books just prior to its major Easter fundraising book sale, so was unable to offer them at the time, and as result is running a special sale next week.

Project coordinator Ann Pritchard says

they were delighted to receive the books, which cover a wide range of subjects and are to be sold for $2 each.

“There will be some great deals on offer and it should raise a lot of money for the hospice.”

The book sale will be at the former Office Max site, corner of Elizabeth and Durham streets, from 10am-4pm on September 19-24.

Planning ahead in Paengaroa Paengaroa residents are being urged think big about their future vision for the area to help develop a community plan.

When it opens in 2016, the Tauranga Eastern Link will conclude at Paengaroa – as result a group of residents are driving development of a community plan so the area is ready to make the most of the change.

Steering group member Cassandra Lyons-Birley says the community decided they needed a long-term plan in order to understand the needs and goals of all groups in the area, and to leverage off the area’s strengths.

A community expo next week aims to encourage residents to share

their ideas and learn more about what businesses operate in the area.

All households have also been given a survey to complete.

“Survey results are not due back for a few weeks, but the initial response and feedback is promising.”

Cassandra says the hope to have the plan completed within 12 months, and follow in the footsteps of other districts that are benefitting from adopting a long-term plan to prioritise actions.

The expo is at Paengaroa Hall 10am-7pm on Thursday and Friday, and from 10am-3pm next weekend (September 21-22), with Saturday’s event combining with a community gala of live music, a sausage sizzle, and an appearance

by the town crier.

Cassandra says the plan aims to build on the district’s strengths – such as the high proportion of businesses – while improving weaknesses – such as road safety, housing issues and social networks.

The project is being supported by the Western Bay of Plenty District Council.

WBOPDC community development officer Ben Wilson says developing a plan helps communities become more resilient and sustainable, while boosting resident’s sense of involvement.

“Community planning is about enabling local people to take control of shaping their community.”

With the school’s 100th birthday on the way, Tracey feels her family is still committed.

“It makes you want to be involved with the school more.”

Centennial festivities begin with a schoolwide celebration on Friday, October 18 from midday.

On Saturday, the school is opening for people to reminisce, followed by a dinner, guest speakers, dancing and a live band at Classic Flyers.

Fond memories of school gala days can be shared between four generations of the Crean family, who are attending Mount Maunganui Primary School’s 100th birthday next month.

This is because family members have all attended the school – celebrating its Century milestone on October 18-19.

Beginning in August 1913 – at the original site between Rata, Tawa and Totara streets – by 1925 the school had 107 pupils and Dorothy Crean was one of them.

The second member of the family – Dorothy’s daughter Merilynn Crean– began at the same school in 1954.

Merilynn also chose to send her two children Shane Crean and Tracey Bluck (nee Crean) to the same school, with Shane’s first day in 1973 and Tracey starting three years later.

Following the family tradition Tracey’s daughters Abbie and Charlee Bluck played in the school’s historic playground, as did their parents at Mount primary, which has recently been replaced.

The girls’ brother Sam, age six, now attends the school

with his cousin five-year-old Alex Crean – who is Shane’s daughter.

Candy floss and toffee apples have been a Crean family favourite memory through four generations – with siblings Shane and Tracey calling it a “highlight”.

“When you’re a kid gala days are pretty good no matter what year you’re in,” says Shane.

Before their time, mother Merilynn remembers her school gala days including piglet racing and donkey rides on the

Davies’ family donkeys among her best school activities.

“Out the back there were huge old pine trees. We used to make huts in them. But you had to be in the in crowd to get in the huts,” says Merilynn.

When Dorothy was in school there was no swimming pool and lessons were held at the Port of Tauranga “when it was all beach”. No changing rooms meant Dorothy had to improvise.

Like many of you, I’m concerned about Tauranga’s financial position, especially where debt is incurred for the wrong reasons. In council I have consistently advocated prudence in spending decisions, even when it has not been popular to do so.

The talk about the three councils currently operating in our city achieving savings by “sharing services” and “co-operation” is very short-sighted and self-serving. The truth is, the current structure of local government in our region is by no means the most cost-effective whichever way it’s shared.

Suggesting otherwise would be difficult to justify when vast amounts of precious ratepayer money is being wasted due to all the bureaucratic duplication that exists across the Bay. Investigating options to deliver greater value to our ratepayers is well-overdue.

Community activity reports to council this week At the council’s Projects and Monitoring committee we had Western Bay of Plenty Police area commander Inspector Clifford Paxton deliver a presentation.

Council receive regular updates on crime statistics as one method of letting the community know what part crime is playing in society. Inspector Paxton emphasised percentage spike increases didn’t necessarily mean a

crime wave, because of the relatively small actual numbers of crime. Put simply if crime increases from 10 to 12 that can be shown as two extra or a 20 per cent increase. Closing down one burglary ring can mean another one starts up. Police have been focussing on known offenders and taking preventative activities, including checking second-hand dealers, bail checks, check points and referrals to partner agencies.

Hot spots for criminal activity are parts of Bayfair, Merivale and Gate Pa, ranging from anti-social behaviour to petty crime and disorder.

Other reports to the committee came from our Sister Cities activity contracts. Ratepayers contribute $5500 towards education outcomes.

This translates into overseas students in Tauranga. Numbers from our Japan sister city, Hitachi, are down to 41. One reason for this is Hitachi’s proximity to the broken nuclear plant at Fukishima. Export NZ (BOP) handles the balance of sister cities activities with ratepayer funding of $49,416. We were told efforts were now being made to coordinate sister city activity with other New Zealand cities with sister city connections. From my experience this is overdue and there should be closer links to government agencies so every export opportunity for New Zealand companies can be spread over as a wide a network as possible. Trade in Asian countries is very dependent on personal relationships, trust and integrity.

Sport BOP gave their six-monthly report. They coordinate all types of sport in our region and fill the gap from yesteryear, when volunteers were available to organise sport. It’s all changed these days with a fall in volunteers, increase in numbers of sports and numbers participating. Sport BOP organise coaching in some sports and help in all manner of administration matters. Ratepayers contribute $289,308 towards its costs.

At council’s Strategy and Policy committee elected members adopted the Mobile Shops policy. Contentious issues are how vendors operate at the Mount during Christmas holidays. With 12 carpark spaces tendered along Marine Parade, the policy states no one vendor will be allowed to take all spaces. There’s

a lot more rules around mobile vendors as council attempts to find the balance between public right to services and retailers, who provide those services yearround, taking the good with the bad.

Election meetings are underway and the usual pattern from previous elections is emerging. Some meetings are being well run, one or two appalling; and the balance in between is like past experiences. Discounting interested parties and candidates attendance has not been high. Some of the hoary chestnuts get trotted out in an attempt to find a point of difference. For example, the urban myth of “secret meetings”. Attendance at council meetings or perusal of the minutes, shows little is done “in secret”. Usually, its individuals’ or private business, or council’s legal advice that is the subject of “public excluded”, as it is more appropriately called.

Debt another matter

The other matter is debt. Council has few options to fund our city. Rates, development contributions, user fees, government subsidies (mainly roading) and borrowing are the options. Tauranga’s borrowings are misunderstood by some and misrepresented by others. At June 30, rates revenue funded debt was $230.1 million. That’s the bit you pay out of your general rate and is 46.6 per cent of total debt. Council has cash it lends to itself – just like modern day banking practise of deducting your savings from your mortgage – and including this makes net external debt of $378.9 million. Tauranga schools are busy preparing for the Regional Jump Jam North Island finals being held in the city for the first time in eight years.

To put things in perspective the debt situation is a very reasonable option to fund the growing city – the other option is to increase annual rates significantly.

I’m the first to agree some of this debt was created on nice-to-haves rather than core infrastructure; and some of us (a minority) didn’t support some of this expenditure. But in the last three years there’s been a focus and concentration on core infrastructure like stormwater; with nice-to-haves being shirted out of the 10-year plan. Put plainly council’s priorities are now focused on what councils should be doing first – basic infrastructure.

So debt is not all bad, but as I’ve noted many times, it’s up there and we need to continue to carefully manage and monitor it. Our CEO Garry Poole is a long-experienced accountant, and finances are his speciality in assisting elected members. Borrowings also ensure those who will benefit in the future will share the cost burden.

Full council on Monday sees a very busy agenda.

Marine Parade residents have asked to speak in the public forum in another attempt to sway council into banning certificated motor homes from staying overnight along their road. A Route K transfer to NZTA is also likely, subject to agreement from elected members, to transfer to state highway status

(potentially July 1, 2014). Tolls will continue, NZTA will maintain the road, an electronic toll collection will match the Eastern Link system and NZTA will underwrite the financial risk for outstanding Route K debt from a date to be agreed for, 35 years from that date. We’re not out of the woods on this one yet, but this seems a positive leap forward in my opinion. The devil is always in the detail.

Otumoetai College student Josie Ward’s textile design could soon be the centre piece in Tauranga households.

The Year 13 student took the top prize in the Global Connexions Fashion and Art Competition and has since been fielding requests from a number of people wanting to purchase her design.

After coming across some ottomans covered with different fabrics, Josie came up with the idea to

recover an old oak chair which was being stored in the garage at home.

Josie screen printed plain fabric and drew pictures using a fabric pen, turning something basic into an original patchwork design and using it to recover the old ottoman.

After entering Global Connexions since Year 11, this is the first year Josie has come away with a prize.

She is hoping to study Textile Design at Massey University next year.

Young ref aiming high for future Four years ago, Amon Rimene was in Year 10 at Mount Maunganui College and not sure where his future would take him.

It was then that he met Kane Hames from the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union, who encouraged him to consider rugby refereeing as a good way to keep fit and contribute to the game.

Amon accepted the challenge and with local role models around him like Paul Greenstreet, Glen Jackson and Kane himself, Amon has risen through the ranks at an extraordinary pace.

“I referee about three games a weekend, including senior rugby.

“I’ve also been to the Gold Coast for a tournament where I refereed eight games and learned so much.”

Amon’s early success at refereeing has fuelled his ambition to be a rugby referee on the world stage, refereeing World

Cup rugby and rubbing shoulders with the biggest names in the game.

Staying grounded, Amon remains focused on learning, keeping fit and putting many hours into helping with junior rugby.

Triple trouble in Mount duel A duel is brewing in Mount Maunganui as two competitive runners prepare to take on the region’s iconic peak in a triple challenge.

On September 28 keen athletes Anthony Collins, 37, and Fiona Ellison, 43, will come face to face as they attempt to be the fastest to reach the top of Mauao – not once but three times.

Setting off from the Mount Surf Club the pair will tackle the grinding steps before winding around the seaside mountain to the peak.

It may seem a little crazy to those not keen to mount the hill, but these two are ready for the challenge, all for a good cause, raising money to support the Child Cancer Foundation and Breast Cancer Support Service Tauranga.

Fiona, a mother of two and ultra-distance athlete, is committed to helping the Tauranga branch of the CCF and the families of those suffering through cancer.

“It is seeing these kids and their friends enjoying a carefree childhood that made me want to help make a difference to those kids struck down with cancer.”

Anthony, who has lived in Tauranga for the last 23

years, knows all too well the perils of breast cancer after his mother was diagnosed and survived the disease.

“My family came face-to-face with breast cancer with the best possible outcome; my mother is cured of the disease and remains cancer-free to this day.”

The pair last summer competed against each other in a race to the top twice. Anthony took out the title, and says Fiona has been waiting for a chance to redemption.

“This project started as a grudge match after I bet Fiona in a race twice to the top of the Mount last summer. Since then, she’s been chomping on the bit for redemption.”

Tournament director Vicki Semple says it is exciting to see the event get bigger and better every year, with the 16-code tournament opening this Sunday attracting 6500 student competitors – almost 10 times the 750 who took part in the first tournament 10 years ago.

Vicki, who has organised the tournament since it began 10 years ago, says the only thing left to organise was some good weather.

“I’m hoping we’ll have a few wet days this week, then it will clear up for the game,” says Vicki.

Every year the tournament has grown in size as its reputation has grown – this year attracting 193 schools up from 165 last year – a success Vicki says is a tribute to everyone involved in the organising committee.

“The growth in athlete numbers confirms the tournament’s value as a pathway to sporting success and future champions.”

After attracting its first two Australian schools in 2012, this year international participant numbers have grown to seven schools from across the Tasman;

and the first team from Rarotonga is coming t the tournament, running from Sunday to next Friday.

Vicki says the visiting contingents are “adding a really exciting international flavour” to what she says is already an

exciting celebration of sport.

The tournament will see intermediate-age pupils compete in 16 sports from traditional sports of soccer, rugby and netball to water polo, golf, indoor bowls, squash and gym sport.

Vicki says she is looking forward to many highlights, including

seeing two rugby sevens games played as the curtain raiser at the Steamers versus Stags clash at Baypark on Wednesday.

The programme begins on Sunday while the tournament will officially open with a ceremony at ASB Baypark Arena on Sunday at 6pm.

Something new, and very blue Long-awaited upgrades at Papamoa’s Palm Beach Plaza have begun this week – and it’s off to a colourful and “stunning” start.

Bright blue mobility car parks now adorn the front of the plaza – an initiative centre manager David Hill says is the perfect way to get renovations started.

“There are a lot of people needing the mobility parks, and other people were parking on them, so [the improvements are] just to make this very clear.

“We needed to clearly define the dedicated areas, and while we’re under construction we need to make sure these

members of the community are well catered for.”

The “stunning” blue car parks are part of Stage 1 of the upgrades, says David.

The remainder of Stage 1 involves renovating the inside of the plaza which is expected to be completed by the end of October.

This week the “eyebrows” above plaza stores were removed as well as the large ATM box.

Further plans for inside include removing pillars, old tiles and stripping down eye sores – with the intent of creating clear sightlines so shoppers can find stores easily.

The plaza upgrade consists of about eight stages and is due for completion in three or four years.

During September the New Zealand Association of Optometrists promotes eye healthcare in a campaign called ‘Save our Sight’.

The aim is to increase people’s awareness of eye health and to encourage people to have a full eye examination regularly to prevent sight loss.

Many people are now aware of eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration through this campaign.

It is estimated 70,000 New Zealanders currently have glaucoma: a disease where$ the fl.90 uid pressure inside the eye rises and caused destruction of the delicate nerve fibres carrying information from the retina to the brain. Half of these people do not know they have the disease because they have never had their eyes thoroughly tested.

causing central vision loss. It already affects the sight of 25,000 New Zealanders and 2000 people each year are added to this number.

A comprehensive eye examination also aims to detect other diseases including hypertension, diabetes, and ocular melanoma, as well as dry eyes and cataracts.

This usually takes 30-40 minutes and not only checks if someone needs glasses but also includes an examination of the eyes’ health, inside and out, to detect early signs of eye disease. Treatment can then be initiated to reduce vision loss.

It’s ‘Game On’ for primary It’s the final ‘game on’ for Bethlehem College’s junior campus tonight as more than 100 students gear up for the last performance of their school production.

Rachael wanted her students to realise they can have even greater adventures if they go outside and experience life through the outdoors, books, history, music and dance.

“I based the production on something that I wanted the kids to learn.”

Whether they are a sheriff, television show host, pirate, or lobster, the students have adapted a number of performing arts skills, including singing, dancing, acting and speech, she says.

The final musical is set to be staged at Bethlehem College’s Performing Arts Centre at 7pm tonight.

Anchored by a 170-student cast, the students create a virtual reality game to play taking them on adventures that can be easily replicated into real life.

‘Game On’ sees children travel through the game completing each level, finding things and meeting people along the way.

What they find and who they meet remind the children of adventures that don’t have to be solely explored through computer games - but in the outside world too.

2500 new cases

Each year 2500 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed, and despite an increasing number of men getting checked, 550 men still die from the disease each year.

One in 10 Kiwi men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime, which accounts for 15 per cent of all male cancerrelated deaths in New Zealand.

Urologists’ research keeps Bay on world map Tauranga’s internationally renowned urologists, Mark Fraundorfer and Peter Gilling, are highly respected when it comes to the treatment of prostate cancer.

Their strong interest in urology research has kept Tauranga on the world urology map, ensuring the latest treatment options are available for their patients.

Coupled with the misconception that being masculine means not getting sick, getting men to seek medical attention, let alone prostate examinations, is a difficult task, says Jim. But as the spotlight shines on prostate cancer during Blue September, Jim is reminding men that getting tested is the best way to achieve peace of mind and determine an individual’s risk of developing serious prostate cancer.

“Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in New Zealand, but it’s the third most lethal. So not everyone who gets prostate cancer is going to die from it, it’s very much an individual thing.”

Jim recommends getting a prostate examination at 40 years old, to determine how often an individual should be tested later on.

“There is growing evidence that getting a test done when your 40 is a good way of predicting who will need further testing in the future.

“At one end of the scale it’s a very aggressive disease, which would need radical treatment. At the other end of the scale are these guys who have such a lazy, slow growing prostate it’s unlikely to ever cause any problems.”

While prostate cancer itself doesn’t show any symptoms, as men age their prostates grow and this growth often

“So they think it’s probably cancer, but think ‘If I don’t go to the doctor and find out I’ll be okay’,” says Jim. “Just because you’re having trouble with waterworks doesn’t mean you’re going to die of cancer. It’s uncommon for it to be caused by cancer, but there’s only one way to find out.”

Testing includes both a standard blood test, and a rectal finger examination; and Jim hopes Blue September will help men realise the importance of getting both.

“The message is not just to guys but to their families, to take them to the doctor.”

Hey pesto - tasty thrills I was out in the garden pulling out weeds and getting everything in order ready for planting when I discovered an overgrown pepper plant with bright red aged capsicums. That is was still growing is a testament to our mild winter.

I decided to give it a bit of a prune back and see if it has the ‘ bounce back’ effect, while its small bright red capsicums were destined for a batch of red pesto.

Pesto is usually the name given to

paste made with basil, pine nuts, olive oil, garlic, and parmesan. The name is derived from the pestle used with a mortar to crush the ingredients.

Many chefs these days create various pestos from other base ingredients to create some fantastic flavour bases to enhance grilled meats, sandwiches and pasta dishes or for a dip with crackers or bread.

In 2004 I introduced red pesto onto the menu at La Dolce Vita

restaurant in Greece. The Italian owner loved the colour and flavour it brought to some dishes, and in particular, alongside the basil pesto as a dip with breads.

These days breads and dips are everywhere and there is a wide range of dips at the supermarket.

However, the amount you get for what you pay is insane.

With a well-stocked pantry and a good food processor, or mortar and pestle, you can make your own at a fraction of the cost. This week I have three pesto recipes. All are easy to prepare and use different types of nuts and cheese, and you can adjust the amounts to suit your tastes.

Rocket pesto 150g almond flakes 2 cups (packed full) fresh rocket ½ cup parmesan 1 clove of garlic ¼-½ cup olive oil ¼ cup parmesan cheese Walnut and spinach (dairy-free) 2 cups frozen spinach 1 cup of walnuts ½ cup lemon juice 1 Tbsp of cumin powder sea salt and fresh cracked pepper Methods:

For the red pesto you can use tinned peppers, but you must wash thoroughly to remove brine.

If using fresh peppers rub with olive oil and grill over a flame or under grill until blackened, then place in a plastic bag to sweat and rub off the skins.

Place capsicums on an oven tray and roast some more in oven together with liberal dose of olive, garlic (which can be chopped up), oil, black pepper and thyme for about half an hour. Allow to cool then add the feta and toasted cashew nuts, and place all in a food processor and blitz into a lovely rich red paste. Pack into a container and keep in fridge. The flavour develops more after a day and it will last for seven.

For the rocket pesto simply blitz all ingredients together and season to taste. The same process can be used for the spinach and walnut pesto, which is garlic and dairy-free and very good for you nutritionally.

The pestos can all be used for pastas and dips and you can whip them up in a flash. Try one for your next dippy do da day.

Refurbished and ready A group of 40 may not be able to sit down for dinner at a restaurant without booking the entire room out for the night – but they can at the Citz Restaurant where seating a group of 20, 30 or even 40 is not an issue.

Tauranga Citizens Club has refurbished the restaurant with new furniture and paint, a new menu and a new head chef.

The newly renovated restaurant – seating 220 people – can cater for private functions, corporate events, and large families.

With December 25 fast approaching, head chef Shane Barber says now is the time to start organising those pre-Christmas parties.

Shane and his team at the restaurant have come up with delicious new additions to the old menu.

The new menu includes garlic sautéed scallops and chicken and mushroom crepes. Popular choices from the old menu including roast of the day and lamb shanks are still available.

All food is 100 per cent made by the chefs on-site, with top quality New Zealand meats sourced right here in Tauranga.

College donates cooking equipment to Tongan school A Tongan school’s home economics department consisting of one rusty, old, broken oven, a bench and very limited utensils will soon be filled with kitchen necessities when a donation from Otumoetai College arrives.

Heilala Vanilla co-founder and director Jennifer Boggiss often visits Tonga as part of the Te Puna company’s strong connection with the island community – and on her visit to Vava’u High School last October she noticed the school’s home economics department needed help.

“We look at various ways we can help them. The home economics department was the first and science is second.”

Otumoetai College food technology tutor Lauren Atkin was keen to help out – and double ups of spoons, bowls and plates the school weren’t using in class were gathered to be donated to the Tongan school.

“We understand just how much equipment is required to function successfully for the students involved and it [food technology] is all about

learning,” says Lauren. “We have decided what equipment we can spare and relish in the opportunity to help another school and community.”

The equipment is hoped to be shipped to Tonga by the end of September so the department can be up and running in term four.

Jennifer wants to thank Otumoetai College for their donation and hopes to encourage other schools to help donate goods to Vava’u High School too.

Bed wetting – more common than you think Thousands of Kiwi children wake every morning to a wet bed. Bed wetting, or Nocturnal Enuresis, is very common in young children but can last into the teen years. It is more common in boys and tends to run in families.

Most children grow out if this normal phase by age seven. It affects about 15 per cent of five year olds, five per cent of 10 year olds and two per cent of 15 year olds. It usually resolves itself with time and patience, but until it does bed wetting can be embarrassing for children and frustrating for

It is important not to punish the child – they cannot help it. Rather, reassure them it is common and normal and they will grow out of it in time.

When supporting the child, it is important to consider their age and stage. It may be the urinary system and nervous system connections are still developing – in this case time and patience are needed. In older children there may be other causes, such as allergies, stress, sleep cycle dysfunction, constipation and, occasionally, urinary tract infec-

tions. The best approach is to consider the child holistically and look for other symptoms, such as snoring, food intolerances, stomach or bowel upsets, nightmares or insomnia.

There are specific nutrients and herbs that help by supporting nervous system function, toning the bladder, dealing with infection or low immunity, and reducing the effects of allergy or food intolerance.

Remember: they can’t help it – patience and time are usually all that is needed.

But if bed wetting is causing distress to your older child, seek help and support.

Kitten rearers needed for strays

Little ones sleeping soundly ARRC is recruiting volunteers to help rear kittens, having been delivered their first stray kitten at the weekend.

Co-ordinator Liza Schneider says the kitten was found in a flax bush by a man driving his bobcat.

“At seven days of age it is healthy and

strong, but needs bottle feeding until it is old enough to feed itself.”

ARRC’s team of volunteers is wellequipped to help these kittens, but with the high volume that is likely to be taken in during the next few months they are looking for people to help, says Liza.

Electric memories for Bay woman The weekend Sun is profiling some of Tauranga’s historic places dotted around the city. This week reporter Zoe Hunter looks at Omanawa Falls’ 100-year-old underground power station.

According to New Zealand Historic Places Trust, Omanawa Falls Power Station was originally built in 1915 to supply electricity to homes in Tauranga and across the Western Bay of Plenty.

The 100-year-old hydroelectric station is New Zealand’s first underground hydro generating station, and is owed much to the enthusiasm of Tauranga Borough Council engineer Lloyd Mandeno.

The power house consists of an artificial cave excavated out of rock, initially accommodating two 75kw 400volt direct-coupled generating sets. Tauranga resident Heather Mclean’s grandfather William Milne worked at the power station in 1917 and was Lloyd Mandeno’s right hand man.

In 1918, Heather’s father Tommy Milne began working at the power station and so did her uncle Johnny Milne.

“The three of them used to do a shift each. I can remember my dad having a fit because he was the youngest of the three; and if anything ever happened he was the one that was always caught out. If something was faulty then somebody had to go out and it was always Heather’s dad.

Heather remembers her father taking her down to the tunnel leading to the underground station.

The power station, which carries a NZHPT Category 2 registration, was restored in 2008 by hydro-electric entrepreneur Michael Davis.

People can visit Omanawa Falls but cannot get down to the power station due to health and safety reasons.

Tauranga City Council is looking to restore the power station, so people can walk all the way to the historic power station.

Women’s common questions The recent women’s expo was a relaxing environment to answer questions and discuss treatments I provide at Rejuvenation Cosmetic Medicine.

These procedures use medically-prescribed products, such as Botox and Restylane, which are administered by trained medical professionals to minimise the effects of facial ageing.

These treatments evoke very strong opinions, both of enthusiasm and trepidation, and reveal common misconceptions. It’s therefore an ideal opportunity for me to provide a considered and informed opinion on this.

Myth 1: No stopping

Women often believe nce you start treatments you cannot stop, or your face will collapse and look saggy This is incorrect. At worst, the quality of your skin will go back to what it would look like had you had no treatment to begin with.

Every day skin expands and contracts according to levels of hydration, weight gain/loss, general health and other factors. Skin responds well to increased levels of hydration, which is what hyaluronic acid in dermal fillers such as Restylane promotes. The only reason most continue is because they like the improvements.

Myth 2: Not natural

People say it’s not natural to use botox or similar treatments, that we should grow old gracefully Our bodies deteriorate with age. We opt to

compensate for the natural effects of ageing with restorative procedures so we have optimal quality of life.

Our skin deteriorates rapidly in this part of the hemisphere, which accelerates ageing. Some dermal fillers we use to soften facial wrinkles contain the same ingredient our own cells naturally produce – hyaluronic acid.

Myth 3: It’s vain

If spending time and money to enhance your appearance to please oneself or others is considered vain, we are all guilty.

We invest in a myriad of services to either maintain our appearance and health, or maximise it.

A healthy self-esteem contributes to being happy and confident. A lifetime of effort goes into nurturing self-esteem.

If presenting ourselves at our best includes removing grumpy-looking frown lines from our brow with a muscle relaxant then I see this as a fair call.

Myth 4: It’s expensive

Being ‘expensive’ or ‘affordable’ is a relative term which we justify according to our needs and wants.

Many women I spoke to at the expo were surprised at just how affordable some of the cosmetic treatments are.

A typical treatment to stop frown lines forming between the eyebrows cost approximately the same as two lattes a week – as does the cost of a small amount of dermal filler to reduce lines around the mouth.

How to avoid eating for comfort It is very common to use food to comfort yourself after a hard day, when something has gone wrong or you need cheering up.

Food tastes delicious, it doesn’t judge you, and while you are eating it, it can make you feel amazing.

The problem is you are using food for something it wasn’t designed for. You are likely to be eating when you are not hungry and using food to help control the way you feel.

The aftermath in many cases also isn’t great. You may have feelings of guilt, disappointment and self-hatred for what you have just done. Particularly if you are trying to lose weight.

Once again though – you aren’t mad, silly or odd for doing this.

You have just learned to use food as your default coping mechanism in times of stress or need.

What you need to do is find a new coping mechanism that isn’t as damaging, as well as working on your thinking at the times when you feel like using food to comfort yourself.

As you work through this and start having successes – you will feel empowered and more

able to resist these urges that would normally control you.

A big key is understanding your triggers.

What sets you off?

Once you can answer that, you can start asking: What new thoughts can we develop? What could we do differently?

What would a good outcome be?

Girls playing their part More than two years ago, cancer changed the lives of two young girls.

Now, Papamoa College students Minette Van Viljon and Victoria Rhodes- Carlin, both 15, are trying to raise as much money as they can to help others affected by cancer.

When Minette’s mum was diagnosed with cancer, she decided to create awareness of the disease. This month, Minette will shave her head to show her support in helping fundraise for those suffering cancer.

Not understanding why having no hair could affect a young girl’s social life, Minette decided to lose her locks to experience first-hand what it feels like.

“I didn’t understand they didn’t want to go out and why they felt so insecure about themselves. I wanted to understand their side of the story.”

Minette’s hair will be made into a wig for cancer patients going through chemotherapy.

At age 10, Victoria was diagnosed with a brain tumour and became an active member of CanTeen three years later. Victoria says CanTeen supported her through her teenage years by helping her to deal with the emotional and physical stresses of having cancer.

“Going through your teenage years, on top of dealing with the after effects of cancer. [It] really alters your life.” After losing her hair, Victoria says knowing her friend is going to shave hers off in support of those suffering from cancer is gratifying.

“I feel really happy and really proud that these people are my friends, and people that I see every day, and they’re doing this to help me and to help people with cancer. It makes me feel all excited.”

Together the girls hope to raise $5000 to support sufferers of cancer. Along with the shared goal, Minette hopes to individually raise $2000 when she loses her locks at her college’s annual head shave on September 24. Last week, the girls held a bake off and sale at the college, raising $478.

Free radicals and antioxidants (Part 1) In my recent seminars I was asked to explain free radicals and antioxidants. The challenge is that any explanation must at least explain the basic chemistry involved.

This series of columns will hopefully remove some of the mystery, and build our understanding on the importance, qualities and functions of antioxidants.

A free radical is just an atom or molecule that has an unpaired electron. Free radicals are produced as a result of our body converting the energy (in our

body) from our food. We cannot produce energy without also producing free radicals; and these readily react with other free radicals or compounds which can cause serious damage to body structures.

Essentially free radicals damage healthy cells; and if this continues then damage will accrue resulting in disease.

Antioxidants are compounds such as vitamins C and E that neutralise free radicals by with John Arts donating or accepting electrons to the free radical thus preventing free radical damage.

Targeted antioxidant therapy can play an important role in rebuilding damaged cells and body systems as a result of chronic disease.

For example, free radical damage to blood vessels causes damage to collagen and other structural proteins leading to poor circulation, strokes and hypertension. The most important antioxidants in protecting blood vessels are vitamin C, the bioflavonoids, and polyphenols such as those extracted from grape seeds and berries.

During the next few editions we will look at specific antioxidants and the role they play in maintaining and restoring health.

The key to obtaining adequate antioxidant levels is to have a diet rich in a variety of plant foods; and to supplement it with a broad spectrum antioxidant supplement that is also a complete multi-vitamin and multimineral.

What happened to democracy?

Co-governance. It’s another new word that’s crept into our vocabulary, which as far as I am concerned is all fine as long as Maori get themselves elected by the people in the same way everyone else in this country does.

Once again the New Zealand taxpayer has to fund these self-appointed positions on our councils by Maori to push their point of view only on what suits them.

These special privileges, handed out for a minority group and they call it co-governance, to me is Apartheid by another name.

Now I read Tauranga City Mayor Stuart Crosby thinks maybe he should be informing the wider public of how it all works.

All fine after the event, especially as he is supposed to be working for all of us, and we the public who pay for it all. He even says, quote: “there is little evidence of connecting to the wider community on these really important issues that are going to impact on them all”.

It’s like council deciding on if they want to give local Maori the Mauao Reserve ownership. Funny how it’s nothing to do with 85 per cent of the people.

Why? Typical, when a few iwi lived nearby 180 years ago it would have been wast scrub land not in any way productive or giving any monetary return in anyway.

But now after all New Zealanders have paid for and developed the land, and it looks like a cash cow, they’re asking for ownership.

And they wonder why we think they’re a greedy lot.

Once again no matter who lives here - beaches, reserves, parks, state forests - all such areas should be left as Crown land which new Zealand taxpayer fund to look after these special public areas.

Why should we give it to Maori who still expect all New Zealand taxpayers to fund the up-keep of these areas anyway. Doesn’t seem very fair from where I am standing. Again, what happened to democracy?

Latin fiesta of flavour Food, drink, dance – they are all the ingredients you need for your ideal celebration of Latin American culture.

On Wednesday, people from Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia and Bolivia will put on a South American fiesta at the Historic Village as part of the Tauranga Regional Multicultural Council’s monthly ‘Living in Harmony’ series, which introduces the public to various cultures.

Council president Ewa Fenn says the evening is focused around food, drink and dance from the South American continent, offering an insight into the various cultures for anyone interested and samples of national dishes to taste.

The evening will include performances by a Brazilian guitarist, dancers, along with photograph displays and film clips from the countries.

“We very much hope for a spontaneous participation of everybody in dancing and just having a really good time.”

Anyone attending is asked to bring a plate for a shared dinner, while donations are also appreciated to cover costs.

Harbour is our biggest asset The biggest asset this region has is Tauranga Harbour. The health of the harbour is a measure of our collective efficiency.

High run-off nutrients in the harbour mean reduced profits. It is very inefficient for nutrients to wash away, only then needing to add nutrients back to the land.

This on-going cycle also degrades our beautiful harbour, and impacts on fish stocks and total biodiversity of wildlife.

So what is the solution, it is not penalties or more red tape, but education - lots of it - and ongoing.

This needs to be multimedia education with free public workshops, newspaper and billboard campaigns, and programmes through the schools on the care of our waterways.

This is an issue, not about blame, but one that we all need to take ownership of through the fostering of long term investment strategies for the future.

Sustainable change only occurs when consulting with, and carrying the community alongside.

We need councillors that truly serve and are the voice of their constituents.

When the Japanese mend broken objects, they aggrandise the damage by filling the cracks with gold. They believe that when something’s suffered damage, and has a history, it becomes more beautiful – BARBARA BLOOM.

cracks we see within ourselves, when in fact they can add to our beauty through the experience and insight we gain in those difficult times. Do you accept your cracks and allow them to form you, or do you attempt to hide, and therefore ignore, the beauty you may acquire?

Don’t encourage Phoenix daydream Tauranga City Council plans to convert the Mount’s Phoenix carpark into a commercial centre are best ignored because the pros and cons of this minefield will ensure the council never gets the equation right on private and public developments.

Of even more concern is Bain McDonald and others plan to turn

carpark into a passive green space and transfer the public parking 500 metres out to the old Mount Bowling Club land at Nikau Crescent, which is so ridiculous it defies belief.

Get off ‘the grass’ noddies. Go check out Coronation Park (currently being slashed and trashed by TCC), Banks Ave, May St, Marine Parade, PilotBay and Mount Drury reserves, which are all within 200

metres of the carpark and fit for the purposes being espoused and readily accessible to the public.

Mount Mainstreet and the editorials are remiss in not doing their homework and encouraging this sort of daydreaming.

From memory, Mcdonald interests developed the commercial building behind Mainstreet adjoining Phoenix carpark and the large development at 17 Banks Ave end of Shadelands Lane.

Both developments sporting significant on-site parking shortfalls.

Same-sex marriages another bad deviation Oh how we humans have deteriorated - well many of us anyhow.

We have deviated from many malpractices to others over the cons, which have caused health problems and many others.

We veered badly when we invented alcohol, nicotine and many of the recent drugs which have hastened bad health prob-

lems. Now in this year of 2013 we have gone further down the slippery slope by introducing the lawful, abominable same-sex marriages.How unnatural for two women or two men to marry.

The Good Morning show on TV One reached a new low. A chef was demonstrating a salmon dish when out of the blue the female host of the TV show asked: “Did you help out round the house when your babies were young, changing nappies and feeding? He replied:“Yes, as a matter of fact I did”. The host: “Well you must have small testicles then” - or words to that effect.

Silence from the guest chef ensued. Host: “My husband has small testicles and he helped out heaps when the baby was young.

There has been a study that showed men with small testicles help more with changing nappies and looking after things when there are babies in the house” - or words to that effect.

Can you imagine the reaction of the husband when he heard about it or saw it. I can picture the ribbing he is going to get at work.

Am I too old-fashioned or was all that less than tasteful? What is next?

Syria invasion: Stir up a hornet’s nest?

Korea, Vietnam and Iraq - only to name a few of the majors - are now a threat to interfere in Syria’s affairs.

The first three invasions did not really achieve much, and to take military action in Syria might really stir up a hornet’s nest.

I, for one, wish that the United States of America would pay greater attention to addressing its own internal affairs.

Don’t misunderstand me, I utterly abhor any attack involving the use of chemical weapons.

But for another country which is not really involved with this to start with to jump in and crack the whip in this way is definitely not the path to take.

The USA does not have the automatic right to take military retribution within and against other countries.

Inside Te Papa is ‘my place’ Hooray for Brian Johnson of Omokoroa. That’s telling it like it is. Unfortunately it is also true that, when culture becomes a profession (which it has) history becomes distorted by the ashes of many fairy stories.

One of the nastiest and cleverest men of my time, Hermann Goering, summed it up: “Whenever I hear that word (culture) I reach for my pistol.” Culture did for him and his country. Te Papa is not “my place” but what’s inside it is. Things might change; I’m not holding my breath.

Coronation Park tree destruction Do the Tauranga City Council realise how strongly people in this area feel about the felling of trees and re-organisation (in other words destruction) of parks and gardens?

I have been wondering about the plans the council has that involve the changes taking place, and also about the costs involved.

In a story in The Sun last Friday, September 6, Tauranga City Council parks co-ordinator Pete Mouldey says: “We are slowly

working towards an ideal layout according to the reserve’s concept plan...”

Ideal layout in whose eyes?

I would like to know if any of the

ratepayers, those voters who were involved in the last council elections, were ever made aware of this “ideal layout”, and, more importantly, the “reserve’s concept plan”.

Surely views and opinions of residents, the people who live in these affected areas, should be taken into account before felling beautiful old trees because of some “concept plan”.

The trees have been growing far longer than any recent “ideal layouts” have been in existence.

Council decisions: Lapses in judgement?

Do we have a council that is so desperate to be reelected they are prepared to do anything or are they just plain incompetent?

During the last few weeks there has been a number of amazing lapses in judgement and poor governance decisions.

Firstly, the council decision to re-visit and promptly change the election advertising on vehicles.

Secondly, the astounding decision, announced by the Tauranga Mayor, that the Greerton library redevelopment will proceed next year.

Doesn’t he yet realise that he only commands one vote out of 11 on the full council?

Thirdly, the announcement at this week’s Mayoral

debate that the city’s downtown parking fees will be changed. While not necessarily disagreeing with some of the decisions changing, making policy on the hoof is appalling governance and indicates a council in some disarray.

On top of all this we have the chainsaw massacre in Coronation Park.

And, for anyone who attended the CAT meeting at Girls College, they would have clearly left with the message that the current council was in denial over its debt mountain.

All this, and with more to come, does not bode well for the future of this city. I think, time for some changes.

We all need to contribute to this country It’s time for everyone to get off their backsides and do something.

Preferably something positive, but anything that contributes to the family or the community or even themself, would do.

There are too many no-hopers wanting something for doing nothing. You know it. I know it.

Including the world’s key advisory agencies, who tell us we have too many uneducated people than is good for us.

Anyone uneducated is a liability.

To themselves, their family, their community and their country.

There is no excuse for anyone to be uneducated in New Zealand in the 21st Century.

Everyone should be able to read and write and have something of value to add to themselves and their country.

Young people in particular need to understand that unless you get some form of tertiary training or education then you’re probably going nowhere for the rest of your life.

The two big bars at the Devonport Rd end of the Strand have both changed and we now have La Mexica and The Brew Bar, the former switching from their Belgian Beer approach as Der Bier Haus to the sunny likes of Corona and tequila, the latter bringing craft beer from Rotorua to Tauranga. And both have live music.

Last Saturday afternoon there was a big crowd for Swamp Thing at The Brew Bar and they have more blues this weekend when Rotorua bluesman Mike Garner hits town for a gig (3-6pm, free) with Kokomo's Nigel Masters on bass. Mike plays very good guitar and slide and has a great bag of tunes both traditional and original. The following Saturday (21 September) he's back again, this time accompanied by percussionist Warren Huston.

Weather Underground activist, once involved in violent resistance (they would call it terrorism today), who is now living peacefully under a secret identity. When another of his covert group (Susan Sarandon) turns herself in after 30 years his cover is under threat and he goes on the run, hotly pursued by the FBI and an intrepid journalist (LeBeouf ). Along the way lessons and learnt and a lot of stuff is debated.

It’s meaty intelligent material and it’s a pure pleasure to watch actors of this calibre dig into it. In addition to those mentioned there are: Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Terence Howard, Stan-

Robert Redford’s films are usually of a type that makes even a liberal lefty like myself frustrated and embarrassed. They’re just so goddamned solemn and sanctimonious, like The Newsroom but without the drama. If someone’s going to make thoughtful liberal films then why do they have to be this po-faced?

And there is a touch of that about The Company You Keep but, thanks to a smart script and an astonishing cast it remains a gripping drama, talky but always involving, with characters that all have a degree of ambiguity and complexity.

It’s not bad by any stretch but seems unlikely to appeal to anyone not already enamoured with swords and axes.

Winter, Minnesota, a series of gruesome murders and a scarred FBI agent coming out of retirement. Such are the ingredients of Profile of a Killer ,a chilly mid-level indie that swiftly moves from manhunt to kidnap thriller after said killer – a teenager named David – abducts the profiler. Mind games ensue while the FBI continue to search. With such a set-up and budget it’s all about how you tell ‘em, and this does a good – if slightly slow – job, gradually revealing David’s warped pathology while (generally) skirting overt bloodshed.

The performances are good, especially Joey Pollari as the troubled youth.

A Liar’s Autobiography is a strange and misguided project.

The title comes from the autobiography of Monty Python’s gay alcoholic Graham Chapman, who also recorded himself reading the book, which is a very entertaining ride (and, yes, New Zealand does get a mention, but not very flatteringly). This film takes those recordings and sets them to animation of various styles. It’s very weird and really does little justice to Chapman or the Pythons, though it seems well intended. Python fans may well be captivated. If not, they will surely find plenty of interest on the packed second disc of extras.

K11 is yet another reinvention of a ‘60s/’70s exploitation trope, this time the prison flick. But, refreshingly, it doesn’t try to ape the original films’ clichéd cheapness or laugh at their over-the-top silliness. Instead it creates a modern take, with a man – Ray Saxx (Goran Visnjic), successful albeit druggy music producer – waking up in the titular prison, a world ruled by corruption, drugs and rampant sexual weirdness. With a cast including Jason Mewes and other cult hams it’s clearly no Shawshank Redemption but fans of the jailhouse genre might find pleasure in this frequently outrageous slice of Kafkaesque prison sleaze.

But 50 years on the club boasts top class facilities at Tauranga Domain and caters to more than 300 athletes aged 0-14.

Beginning at Bellevue Park in 1963, the club was filled mostly by local families who participated in running events. The club’s athletics pavilion then moved to Otumoetai College when the park was developed to courts and a pool for students.

“Back then you were picked up by bus from your home and taken to Ribbon Days around the Bay of Plenty,” says past member Wendy Collard.

“They were real family days out, these Ribbon Days still remain today and are great fun for our young athletes.”

The club remained at the college until last year, before moving to its current location at Tauranga Domain.

To celebrate 50 years of community athletics, and prior to its second season at the domain, the club is holding a Give it a Go open day this weekend.

Online registrations are now open for ‘Run, Jump, Throw’ from 2pm-4pm on Sunday.

“Come along anytime, have a walk around the facilities, ask questions and meet the committee. Plus we will have fun races with ribbons and you can even buy your uniforms,” says Penny.

“We encourage all young people from 0-14 to join our Tuesday night programme with a focus on developing running, jumping and throwing skills.”

This season begins Tuesday nights, from October 15.

Growing a rare and beautiful flower Tauranga orchid grower Elizabeth Bailey has been growing orchids for about 35 years and she still can’t get enough of the rare and beautiful flower.

A range of orchids will be on display at Tauranga Orchid Society’s annual show at Tauranga Racecourse from September 20-22.

And despite what people think, Elizabeth, a society member, says the flower is reasonably easy to grow.

“It’s very, very rewarding to know you can grow these beautiful flowers.”

As a hobby grower Elizabeth has two shade houses filled with hundreds of orchids at her home. She says the key is to ensure the orchids have shade.

Orchids, clivias and bromeliads will be for sale throughout the weekend.

Elizabeth is one of the judges for this year’s event and says there are three things to look for in a perfectly grown orchid – its size, texture and shape. The flower must also have no imperfections or wrinkles.

“There’s quite an art to it.”

The orchid display is at Tauranga Racecourse, September 20-22 from 10am- 4pm each day. Entry $3.

Fun festival activities aplenty in Katikati As the Katikati’s biennial NZ Mural Contest and Arts Festival nears, new opportunities to participate in the town’s biggest event are popping up in a diverse array of off-shoot competitions.

Two competitions – testing people’s singing and kite-making abilities – are open to entries. Plus, Katikati Open-Air Art has chosen the six artists to be dotted around town from September 30 to October 6 so the public can watch them bring to life their art in the fourth biennial mural contest with the theme ‘Cultural Encounters’.

“One artist is from Auckland, two are from Tauranga, one is from Paeroa and two are from Katikati,” says KKOA president Steve Graveson.

“This year, we really want people to enter our sculpture contest with a theme of ‘Birds’ so we can put more sculptures on Katikati’s Bird Walk which follows the Uretara Stream.

KOAA keeps the winning sculpture for permanent display and we’ll look at purchasing other entries, if suitable,” says Steve.

The winning sculpture receives a cash prize of $3000 – the second biggest prize following the winning mural with a prize of $5000.

Steve says this year’s main community event is a paint-by-number pixelated-theme mural – which won’t be unveiled until all 1600 squares are purchased, completed and stuck together.

‘Songs for Murals’ competition organiser Di Logan wants people to

start “getting their thinking caps on” to come up with songs.

“The song has to be about one of the murals or sculptures in town, to be performed at Katikati Folk Club on October 4, set to their own music or a known tune.”

“Winning songs will be performed at the festival finale at Katikati College on October 6,” says Di. New Zealand Kite Association member John Russell is planning a display of kite art as for the festival, believing it will be “an amazing visual spectacle”.

Access to God. Millions of people have longed for it in every generation.

But the Biblical holy day known as ‘Yom Kippur’ (The Day of Atonement) boldly proclaims there is no access to God without two essential components: A mediator, bringing a blood offering.

And the prescription hasn’t changed for thousands of years.

As the sun sets on Friday, September 13, the Jewish world will observe its most sacred day of the year, The Day of Atonement.

While today’s observance of Yom Kippur bears very little resemblance to

God’s original design (see Leviticus 16), this ancient and dramatic festival is bursting with foreshadows of the only One who could fully and finally secure a perfect atonement: Our Great High Priest, Jesus.

“But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation, not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.” (Hebrews 9:11,12).

Live mayoral debate Being active at every age In an exciting first for Sun Media, ahead of next month’s local body elections, we are hosting our first live mayoral debate next week.

The first live SunLive Mayoral Debate will see Tauranga City’s six mayoral candidates fight for your favour here at No. 1 The Strand on Thursday, September 19. With limited space, we invited 30 people from different communities and sectors across the city, including college students, Grey Power representatives, sports and businesspeople, to attend the debate. Each person has the opportunity to submit a question beforehand, which will be chosen at

random for the candidates on the night.

But because we know this is of high interest for our readers, we’re tackling something never tried before on SunLive – we’re filming the whole thing and streaming it live on the night.

What to give a cat?

A short headstart The newshounds were given one of their most challenging assignments ever this week…to help feed a friend’s cat.

Cats and dogs don’t traditionally mix well at the best of times. Throw in the wildcard of a dinner at stake, and who knows what will happen.

The boss suggested I stay home and keep my head down. But being a Labrador with obsessive compulsive food disorder, I had to keep a watch on things, just in case: 1. The cat wasn’t home and the food was being given away.

2. The cat didn’t finish its dinner and someone needed to help with the dishes.

3. The cat might back down from the

usual ‘stare down’ match and forfeit the prize completely.

As it turned out I was barred at the last minute from attending the cat dinner event. Mrs Boss went alone to give the cat his food.

I warned her cats can’t be trusted and should never be given anything, except maybe a short head start. But she wasn’t listening.

Okay, so she was lucky this time and came back with her nose and pride intact, unlike some recent encounters of the newshounds. But mark my words, keep encouraging these pests and you’ll never get rid of them.

Little guys drawing attention They might be less than half the weight of their All Black idols but the Western Bay of Plenty under 45kg team is stamping their mark with fast, attractive rugby.

Two weeks into the sub-regional competition, Western Bay – consisting of players from Tauranga, Te Puke and Katikati – is sitting comfortably in second after wins against Hamilton Black and King Country.

The competition consisting of teams from Thames Valley, King Country, Hamilton and the Western Bay sees a round robin format with one game against each side before the winner is crowned.

The local side is hoping this form continues with a round three home clash with Te Awamutu kicking off at 2pm on

Sunday at Mount Maunganui College.

Western Bay of Plenty manager Ady van der Beek says the side has the added bonus of some of the players selected in the annual Tai Mitchell tournament.

“Some of these boys have played in the Tai Mitchell but they would have been the lighter weight boys. They would have been playing guys 10kgs heavier so it’s their time to shine.

“The skill level is so high because these boys have played rugby with guys much heavier and now they play with their own weight and it makes for great football.”

Following Sunday’s clash the side travels to Paeroa to take on Thames Valley and Hamilton Gold next weekend.
