Have your say on coastal erosion Western Bay of Plenty residents will get their chance to decide what gets top priority for erosion protection between private property, community infrastructure or cultural/ historical sites.

The first stage in the development of a 30-year Western Bay of Plenty-wide policy for tackling harbour and coastal erosion got underway on Monday, November 9.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council is opening discussions with residents and ratepayers on the controversial topic, starting with an online forum titled ‘Living with the Changing Tides’.

Until November 30 people are invited to have their say on who should fund erosion protection efforts, what should be protected, and how.

It will also make public for the first time research that shows what effects erosion could have

on the District in 100 years’ time – taking into account the effects of sea level rise.

Western Bay of Plenty Council Policy and Planning manager Liz Davies says feedback received through the forum will guide Council in developing a draft District-wide policy for erosion.

The policy, once finalised, will be in place for 30 years.

“There are some big decisions that need to be made, and that could potentially affect the entire district, not just those people living by the water.

“We really encourage everyone to have a look at the information and tell us what they think.”

Key topics covered in the discussions include how we should protect against erosion; whether private property, community infrastructure, or cultural/historic sites should be prioritised; and who should fund the work.

Liz says the project is based

on a research project looking at potential erosion and flooding at Western Bay harbour margins and open coastlines.

The results have been mapped, include the anticipated impact of climate change, which suggests New Zealand should prepare for a 1m sea level rise over the next 100 years.

Maps of the Western Bay have been generated, showing the extent of the possible effects.

“While 100 years may seem like a long time away, as a district we need to start talking about how we are going to tackle this.

“We need to make sure we have a plan in place that is fair, effective and affordable over the long term,” says Liz. The Living with the Changing Tides online forum runs from November 9 to 30.

Participants can read frequently asked questions and relevant research, view maps and photos, take part in discussions and polls, and ask council staff questions.

Oil spill drill a success An oil spill training exercise was held at the Port of Tauranga on Tuesday – New Zealand’s largest port.

The aim of the exercise was to help maintain and build oil spill response capability amongst first responders.

“We do this twice a year with advice from Maritime New Zealand staff to build our capability with industry, iwi and the Port of Tauranga,” said Marine Pollution Prevention Officer and Regional On-Scene Commander Adrian Heays.

“We have a good plan and highly trained multi-agency team in place to respond to spills in the Tauranga Harbour,” says Adrian, “but we’re always learning and building on experience.”

Psychiatric remand ordered A man accused of a Sunday Afternoon rampage, including the alleged stealing of a car, driving towards police and driving on the wrong side of the road, has been remanded to Hamilton’s Henry Bennett Centre for a psychiatric examination.

Interim name suppression continues for the 28-year-old. Judge Heather Simpson also denied media applications to take his photo in the dock on the grounds of possible psychiatric health issues.

He faces charges of disqualified driving, possession of an offensive weapon, aggravated assault on police, reckless driving, failing to stop for police, 2x assault with a weapon, burglary and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

The accused is remanded until November 23 at 2.15pm. Police say they were called shortly after 4.30pm on Sunday, to investigate reports of a man eating grass in the suburb of Otumoetai.

Asbestos found on underpass site The NZ Transport Agency have confirmed that contractors have found asbestos on the site of the new Maungatapu underpass.

The discovery, made late last month, has been tested and confirmed as asbestos, and specialist crews moved in this week to determine the best way to remove it.

The area where the find was made has been secured and has been isolated while work continues on other parts of the project.

NZTA say they are working closely with specialists to safely remove the asbestos, found in an old, demolished building that was uncovered while contractors were carrying out earthworks near the old Baden Powell Centre.

It’s a much overlooked, explicit and unambiguous bit of legislation buried in the statute books for nearly 80 years. And it could cost landlords lots of money.

It’s the Housing Improvement Regulations 1947, Clause 15. The minimum standard, is succinct and unequivocal: “Every house shall be free from dampness.”

“It won’t help landlords, but it could and should help a whole generation, a whole raft of tenants,” says Bev Edwards, managing solicitor at Baywide Community Law Centre.

“We say landlords have a legal duty and obligation to ensure the house they are letting is dry and habitable. And we’ve discovered that responsibility is already enshrined in law. Isn’t that interesting?”

The obscure statute was dusted off by an academic team researching cases of housing quality before the Tenancy Tribunal. Bev plans to wave this big stick when she represents a Tauranga woman in the Tenancy Tribunal later this month.

“I suffered depression because it’s always cold in a damp house,” says ex-tenant Leanne Sullivan. “It didn’t matter how many layers you put on, it was always warmer outside than inside.”

Her son’s school complained he was absent a lot. “He was just sick from the dampness,” she says. She claims there was mould and fungus on her son’s bed and on her furniture, and the entire environment was unhealthy. And only when they moved out were they well again.

“The landlord still claims the house wasn’t damp and he wasn’t responsible,” says Bev. “We don’t agree. When you put a house up

to be tenanted, it has to be of a minimum standard and one of those minimum standards is that the house has to be free of dampness.”

Leanne is claiming $3000 for the landlord’s alleged failure to meet health and safety requirements, $4640 because dampness prevented her from subletting a room, $700 for damage to a mattress, exemplary damages of $200 for stress, loss of peace, harassment and breach of quiet enjoyment and $1000 compensation for what’s claimed to be a retaliatory notice to vacate the house.

“There was nowhere in the house to go to sleep,” says Leanne. “Do we sleep in the lounge? Do we sleep in the spare room? But there was nowhere because the whole place was damp and awful.”

Every year there are stories of people living in cold, damp and mouldy housing, and this year the debate over dampness came to a head when a coroner ruled poor living standards contributed to the death of an Auckland toddler.

There were calls for a Warrant of Fitness

for all rental houses, which would have meant a minimum standard of living including insulation and heating.

“We need our homes to be healthy homes,” said Labour leader Andrew Little.

“No New Zealand child should live through a winter in a cold, damp home,” says the Greens’ Metiria Turei.

There was a resounding no from the government finance minister Bill English, who said costs would only force housing stock out of the market or people out of houses they could no longer afford.

Bev says with the Housing Improvement Regulations 1947 we may not need a WoF. “It’s a WoF for houses act. It’s on the books.”

When the 1986 Residential Tenancies Act came in, Bev says everyone would have assumed it replaced whatever law was there.

“We only ever refer to the RTA, which requires landlords to comply with all requirements of buildings, health and safety. But the 1947 act refers specifically to dampness.”

Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy says statistics revealing Maori are almost three times as likely as non-Maori to have experienced unfair treatment on the basis of ethnicity show agencies need to do more to respond to racial discrimination.

The Ministry of Health has released its 2015 Maori Health Chartbook, Tatau Kahukura, which shows 12.4 per cent of Maori reported unfair treatment in health care, housing or work between 2011 and 2012, compared to 4.2 per cent of non-Maori.

Dame Susan says the figures were not surprising and organisations needed to take action to tackle discrimination.

“We need to understand the genesis of these problems. They’re institutionalised, aren’t they, and organisations and agencies in particular need to address these issues.

“Sometimes it’s not even done intentionally, you know the care and treatment that’s offered to Maori is different to non-Maori.”

Dame Susan says some agencies were already responding, such as the New Zealand Police Force which understood the likelihood of young Maori to be offenders was much higher than non-Maori.

that these type of statistics will continue to ‘level off ’.

“Historically the statistics indicating health and education etc haven’t been great for Maori compared to non-Maori. However over time the statistics are getting [lower] on the negative and more towards the positive.

“I think that is because we as Maori are going from strength to strength in our capabilities and development and how we celebrate who we are not just as Maori but also as New Zealanders.

“I believe there are more and more quality role models coming through that are empowering not just our Maori people, but also teaching all New Zealanders just how fortunate we are to live here in our society of Aotearoa. It’s my hope that this will only continue to grow into the future” Statistics in the Chartbook also showed Maori were more than 1.5 times more likely to have experienced ethnically motivated physical or verbal attacks, with more than a quarter of Maori men, or 26.9 per cent, having experienced such attacks.

Two years ago Auckland outdoor education teacher David Williams says he was your “typical Kiwi bloke”.

But there’s nothing typical about Dave’s goal: to be the first person to successfully complete a sea to summit of the highest peaks on each of the world’s seven continents.

A sea to summit is exactly as it sounds – starting from the nearest ocean, Dave runs the distance of a marathon each day until he reaches each mountain’s base and then climbs to the summit.

Dave explains that he’s using the epic adventure as a way of raising awareness and $100,000 in funds for Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand.

“I lost two friends who had adventurous spirits to depression back in 2013,” he explains.

“I started doing Sea2Summit7 in their honour, but quickly realised how

much of a problem mental health issues are in New Zealand. The whole idea is about not giving up, no matter how tough it gets.”

Since 2013, Dave’s knocked off Kilimanjaro, Elbrus and Kosciuszko, and next year he’ll take on Aconcagua – a 6962m mountain he unsuccessfully attempted in 2013 and 2015.

Dave will be accompanied next January by his good mate and hunting buddy, Matamata policeman Mike Boston who’ll act as his support person. Mike will not only help film the adventures but will also tackle Aconcagua, and then Denali in April, alongside his friend.

“Being a policeman in Matamata and dealing with people with mental health issues, Mike really relates to the cause and wanted to help in any way he could.”

Lions tertiary scholarships open The Omokoroa & Districts Pakeke Lions Club is calling for applications for two tertiary scholarships to be awarded in 2016.

The first award is the Beryl Scott Tertiary Memorial Scholarship, which will be for $2000 for the 2016 year.

The second award, the Precious Family Memorial Scholarship, will be granted for $1500.

Applications are sought from tertiary students who have completed at least one year’s study in subjects of their choice, at the institution of their choice, and who intend to continue their

studies in their chosen field.

The awards are offered to youth of Omokoroa who have been residents of the area comprising the Omokoroa Peninsula, Plummers Point, Whakamarama, Pahoia and Esdaile Road (up to and including Tim Road, but not Wainui South Road) for three years and have attended a local secondary school for at least three years.

Modern design and traditional skills combine The first tall ship alongside at the Tauranga waterfront, since the harbour bridge stopped traffic, is the voyaging waka Hinemoana – which is taking the opportunity to meet possible future passengers.

Hinemoana is the waka of Hawaiki Rising, a trust offering 10-day youth voyages presenting experiential learning, personal growth and development.

Part of a flotilla of seven waka

designed and built in 2009 for Te Mana O Te Moana, Hinemoana was the flagship, says Hawaiki Rising project leader Pat Mohi.

“She was built in mind that she would cater to all the small islands that couldn’t maintain and keep the vessel to themselves,” says Pat. “On the deck and throughout the vessel are designs and symbols that come from each of the different islands. She is the panPacific vessel that incorporates all the traditions of Polynesia as well as Micronesia and Melanesia.”

As the flagship waka, Hinemoana has been everywhere, from one side of the Pacific Ocean to the other, and the islands in between.

The design, with its characteristic raised sterns, comes from Rarotonga.

“This is the type of vessel they believe was used to discover and migrate to the lower south pacific,” says Pat. “They were the ocean voyaging waka, the buses of the ocean from Rarotonga where the whole science came from.”

When the voyage was over, Hinemoana was originally going to go to the Mediterranean, but the people who had sailed on her

wanted to keep her with Katikati-based yachtsman Simon McDonald.

“Simon approached several of us to see if we would be keen to start a project teaching youth leadership skills on board one of these vessels,” says Pat. For those who voyage on them they become more than just a pair of hulls and a mast; they become and entity.

“They are also our caregiver, our sustenance. Without a waka under you on the ocean, you will end up under the ocean,” says Pat. A blend of the ancient and present,

Hinemoana is a surveyed commercial vessel and has on board all the modern navigational and safety requirements, such as GPS, an EPIRB, VHF radio.

She’s operated by sail and electric engines, which are powered through the large solar panel array between the halls aft of the steering oar.

Her hulls are made of fibreglass.

All beams are connected to the hulls through traditional lashings. The waka embodies the best of traditional design with modern technology, a showcase of different cultures coming together.

If your trash could talk, what would it say?

The trash in Hannah Drew’s 30-second videos is telling us an important message.

In one 30-second stop-motion video, a discarded can of soft drink receives help from animated litter which helps the can climb into the rubbish bin – and applause follows.

“That generates a laugh, which I think instantly engages people,” says Hannah. “They can laugh with a group of people and go away and think there was a serious message there.

The 30-year-old has created three humorous 30-second stop-motion videos to help generate not only laughs, but discussions about caring for the environment.

The videos are part of the Bachelor of Creative Industries Year 2 Body of Work and will hopefully be chosen to be shown in Mainstreet Tauranga and BOP Polytechnic’s Students in the City exhibition.

“My project is not about taking a stance, but getting people to further engage with their local environment,” says Hannah, “And I think humour is a massive tool to help engage the audience.

The project titled ‘Investigate’ challenges Year 2 graphic design students to explore issues currently

facing Tauranga Harbour.

“We had to research things that were effecting how we use it either from regional council perspective or a Maori perspective,” says Hannah.

“From there we had to create some sort of response that helped highlight those issues and make the harbour better in some way.”

In three stop-motion videos, Hannah’s highlighted three key issues: oil spills, litter, and sea lettuce.

“Basically, oil spills are just nasty and no-one wants them. But what I find is that with the Rena, a lot of people have kind of forgotten about it because you can’t see the Rena itself anymore.

“Discussions are happening behind closed doors now and yet it’s still really effecting our environment and local Maori as well.”

Hannah encourages residents to dig deeper into what could solve the issues of smelly sea lettuce that’s washed ashore, instead of turning their noses at it.

“It’s the same with litter, people know you shouldn’t do it but people still do. Maybe it’s a responsibility of others to pick it up if you see it, rather than saying: ‘That’s terrible’ and walking away.”

The exhibition is at The Project Room, 63 Spring St, on November 26-December 4, open 10am-2pm, Zoe Hunter Thursday-Saturday.

Power of a recycled book It’s probably the most memorable opening gambit of all time: “In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.”

Ferreting through tables of offerings at the Tauranga Harbour City Lions annual charity book sale throws up a few more doozies.

From Rory McLean’s ‘The Oatmeal Ark’ – “We met, my great-grandson and I, more than half a century after my death.” An interesting, but absurd notion.

Here we go: “The first thing we did that summer was jump into the sea naked.”

This book is well thumbed because author Jim Sterba knew that raunchy sold. “We tore off our travel clothes.” Wholesale nudity on page one.

Where will the titillation end?

There are thousands of books, rows and rows of trestle tables groaning under the goodwill of local book donors.

And there will be delightful serendipitous encounters with books. Like when The Weekend Sun cameraman Bruce Barnard was getting a picture at the sale venue in Devonport Road. He started thumbing through ‘The Centennial of Gazetting Tauranga as a Borough 1882-1982.’

Tiger’s search for a home This is Tiger. He came to the SPCA back in July. He was picked up after he was hit by a car. The accident caused nerve damage in his right front leg, which left him unable to use it.

He was given time to see if the issue was a temporary, but it turned out not to be the case. It was decided to go ahead with the operation to remove his leg, as there really was no other option.

Tiger is coping well and doesn’t seem to have slowed down. He’s still very active and loves attention. Please come in and meet him – show him that loyalty and devotion is a two-way street!

Steampunk: Where old and new collide A parallel universe is opening up on the Coromandel with steampunks from across the country firing up their autonomatrons and descending upon Thames this weekend.

“As a genre, steampunk has a really broad appeal for people no matter who they are or how old they are,” says Deb. “In fact, the thing that amazes me the most about steampunks is who they are when you take them out of their costumes!

“In the past we’ve had writers and artists, but also aeronautical engineers, web and graphic designers, even a couple of council staff members too.”

Divine presence in the Bay Bay of Plenty singer Anna Hawkins is home for the festive season having spent half a year living and working overseas on new music.

The first fruits of this trip avail themselves to New Zealand audiences with the release of her new album ‘Divine’ next week. And to celebrate, she’s performing three special Kiwi concerts as part of her release tour.

Wearing the white ribbon Tauranga’s Shakti Ethnic Women’s Support group is this month hosting a fundraising dinner for the anti-violence campaign White Ribbon.

The Shakti Annual White Ribbon Fundraising Dinner is at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic’s Windermere Campus, inside H Block restaurant, on November 21.

Shakti Ethnic Women’s Support Group co-ordinator Sonia Pathak says the inaugural event last year raised about $2000.

She says the aim of the annual event is to raise awareness for the White Ribbon campaign, while raising funds for Shakti Women’s Refuge.

Sonia says men will also be invited to take the pledge against violence against women.

“On this day we stand up

and take a pledge. It’s making a meaning every year and saying family violence is not ok.”

The winners of the When Love Turns Sour youth art and photography competition will also be announced, followed by a buffet of ethnic food.

Shakti Women’s Support Group offers a place for migrant women to heal from their own domestic violence experiences.

White Ribbon Day, officially on November 25, is the international

day when people wear a white ribbon to show that they do not condone violence towards women.

Organised with Tauranga Moana Abuse Prevention Strategy and Family Works, the Shakti Annual White Ribbon Fundraising Dinner is at BOP Polytechnic on Saturday, November 21, from 6.30pm.

From big screen to a big swim; fun for all ages While we’ve all heard about Drive-In Movies, how about Dive-In Movies?

The Baywave team has given the drive-in idea a twist and come up with the idea of soaking while viewing.

Baywave centre manager Mike Page says this is a new initiative expected to appeal to children and families.

“Ever wanted to sit in your bath and watch the TV? Well, now you can do better. Soak in our pool and

watch a movie on our big (6m x 4m) screen,” Mike says.

The first movie will be held on Thursday, November 26, in the wave pool, starting at 6.30pm.

The plan is to run a Dive In Movie each month.

All will be cartoons and animations. This month’s movie will be ‘’Peter Pan, while ‘Frozen’ will be on the screen in December.

There is no extra charge for entry, and in true movie style popcorn and ice-cream will be available (for pool-side consumption).

Math teacher’s surprise letter It was a letter Jason Ellwood never expected to come. It came as a complete surprise, but a wonderful one. The letter arrived last term, but it had to be kept top secret... until now.

‘Congratulations Jason Ellwood, Named after the late education supporter you have been awarded a Woolf Sir Woolf Fisher, the Woolf Fisher Trust Fisher Fellowship’. aims to recognise excellence in education.

The fellowship is one of the trust’s major awards, which provides overseas study and travel for outstanding secondary school principals and teachers, polytechnic senior managers, and primary and intermediate school principals.

Jason’s plan is to visit schools in Melbourne and Adelaide, where he says there are several schools that are doing ‘interesting and new things’ with teaching and mathematics.

“I’ll go and have a look at how they do things, working with some quite different curriculum and teaching ideas, as well as styles of teaching and buildings.”

Fellowship recipients can chose when they wish to cash in their $10,000 educational trip across the ditch and Jason’s chosen to leave September 2016.

Teaching mathematics at Otumoetai College for 13 years, Jason says the fellowship is recognition of his role.

Did you know that councils set limits on the number pokie machines operating within its area? During the next month, we will be seeking your views on Tauranga City Council’s draft new rules for pokie machines and TAB Venues in the city.

There are currently 529 machines in 37 venues operating within Tauranga. The council’s old rules allowed up to 821 machines, prorated to the city’s population.

The draft new rules would restrict the number of pokie machines to 529, until the population grows. In other words, we have increased the ratio from 1 machine per 147 residents to 1 machine per 228 residents.

But the majority view was to continue with a prorated formula as a sinking lid policy may stop some new neighbourhood bars from opening up in new growth areas.

The number of pokie machines has been stagnant in recent years.

There are various reasons why this has happened. Internet-based gambling is becoming more accessible. It’s also been suggested that the government agency who monitors the pokie machines electronically from Wellington has put a lot of costs on the operators.

The council also propose to treat requests from existing operators to relocate their machines to another venue within the city as a new licence. This could annoy some operators who want to continue using more machines than what is allowed. The Gambling Act says new licences are limited to a maximum of nine machines.

Polishing up your Polish OPEN ALL WEEKEND!

They’re the words spoken in Polish every Saturday morning by some of Tauranga’s Polish community.

Polish Community Trust’s Polish Language School hosts classes at St Thomas More Catholic Church every Saturday morning.

There, Polish Language School teacher Magdalena James teaches the language, culture and traditions, while creating a belonging community for Polish children and families, or English-speaking families to learn Polish.

“We start to teach them words that are most often used,” says Magdalena. “My main goal is to help them be able to communicate. Then I will try to teach them how to read and write.”

Magdalena says on average there’s about 15 adults and children, aged two to 12, attending the school each week.

She guesses the majority of Polish families follow their husbands or wives to New Zealand and wish to continue educating their children about where they’re from.

“I came because my husband couldn’t get work in Poland. We decided it would be easier to grow a family here. I had a huge need for my children to speak Polish.”

The mother-of-four started the Polish Language School about three years ago with her children, aged 10, eight, six and four, and another Polish family.

“We started little and soon the numbers tripled in three years,” says Magdalena.

Children attending Polish Community Trust’s Saturday school will present a theatrical performance at Multicultural Tauranga’s Living in Harmony event this Wednesday.

Multicultural Tauranga hosts a free monthly Living in Harmony event to showcase and get to know the various cultures of people who live in the Tauranga region. Open to the public, the event is at Historic Village Hall on November 18 from 7pm-9pm. Entry is free, however donations are appreciated.

Learn to say hello with a hongi students to show their work with a wider audience, to be proud of their efforts and to share their learning.

Categories include photo essay, graphic design, commercial, music video, magazine documentary, digital image, and storytelling.

There’s a chorus of giggles in the background. That’s because they’re learning to hongi and it’s all very new and funny to five and six year olds.

“I introduced the word and not very many of them did know what a hongi was,” says Maungatapu School’s Whaea Shell.

She’s been teaching more than 60 Year 2 pupils the origins behind the hongi, as part of a video entry for the Movie and Digital Excellence Awards.

They’ve made a three-minute PowerPoint film from photos taken of the children practicing to hongi and artwork they’ve drawn. It’s called ‘The Hongi Story’ and it’s a finalist in the MADE Awards, which will be announced at Mosaic, 37 Newton St, on November 13.

“It’s quite emotional, there’s no talking or anything through it. It’s the music and what the

“There’s a bit of fun around it too, you can do it with the boys and the girls or you can hug and kiss on the cheek.”

But Whaea shows them how to do it, she shows them it’s all okay. “It’s our culture,” she says.

“When they see it on TV or somewhere public now they’ll

say: ‘Oh yeah I know how to do that, I don’t have to be afraid’.

Some of the kids were afraid because it’s something new.

“But then they see it was much easier than they thought.”

The school’s music video ‘Shake It Off ’ made by Year 4-6 pupils is a finalist in the MADE Awards.

Maori housing groups team up to offer land The Tauranga Moana Te Puke Housing Consortium have announced Maori housing groups are combining to offer treaty settlement land for housing developments in Papamoa and Te Puke.

The consortium has land available in Tauranga and Te Puke for housing, including new affordable home ownership and rental options, as part of its bid in the Social Housing Reform Programme for Tauranga.

The consortium includes Tapuika Iwi Authority, Nga Potiki a Tamapahore Trust and Nga Hapu o Ngati Ranginui

Settlement Trust.

“Access to land supply is something our Consortium of local treaty settlement tribes can offer that no other consortium can offer,” says consortium spokesperson Victoria Kingi.

“We each bring unique opportunities through our Treaty settlements that we are willing to share with the wider sub region.”

Te Puke’s Tapuiki Iwi Authority is willing to look at housing options on about 100 acres of treaty settlement land near Te Puke.

Nga Potiki a Tamapahore Trust Chairman Colin Reeder says Nga Potiki has access to about 400 acres of treaty settlement land in Papamoa.

“We commence construction of a large housing project in Papamoa in late 2016, and will set aside 30 per cent of that for quality affordable housing.”

The consortium recently signed a Heads of Agreement with Trust House Masterton to provide tenancy management for the consortium’s housing.

Trust House visited with the consortium in Tauranga to look at the land available and the state of the current housing stock.

The Iwi Consortium is in the Social Housing Reform Programme for Tauranga that could see about 1200 Housing New Zealand properties transferred to an approved community housing provider.

Individually, the iwi have already developed social housing in the

Tauranga area and have formed partnerships with the Tauranga Polytechnic to develop trades and other commercial and professional skills for young Maori.

The consortium is progressing through the initial stages of the bidding process for the transfer of social housing in Tauranga.

The government is due to issue its call for expressions of interest in the Social Housing Reform Programme by December.

Home building accelerates in the Bay Bay of Plenty is among four regions driving most of the recent growth in building consents for new dwellings, according to Statistics New Zealand.

The regions with the largest increases include BOP, Waikato, Auckland and Northland.

Statistics NZ data shows 72 new dwellings were consented in the Bay, with Waikato up 158, Auckland up 106 and Northland up 49.

In September 2015, 2242 new dwellings were consented in NZ, which is a 13 per cent increase from the same month last year.

“In the regions surrounding Auckland, growth is being driven by new houses, while in Auckland itself, apartments are also a big part of the picture,” says business indicators manager Clara Eatherley.

The regions with the largest decreases include Wellington, which is down 67 from a spike last year, and Canterbury, which is down 54. However, Canterbury still accounts for almost one-quarter of the national total.

In seasonally adjusted terms, the number of new dwellings consented fell 5.7 percent in September, following a 5.3 percent fall in August. This follows a 20 per cent surge in July, and Clara says the trend is increasing.

“While we see a bit of volatility from month to month, the overall picture recently has been growth in building consents, both on the residential side and the non-residential.”

Future looks bright for cost and energy efficient bulbs Kiwis have switched on to the benefits of energy efficient light bulbs, with supermarkets selling twice as many as they did five years ago.

A quarter of all bulbs sold in supermarkets are now energy efficient varieties, such as LEDs, CFLs and new generation halogen globes, according to IRI-Aztec MarketEdge.

This has trended up steadily from 13 per cent in 2010.

LED uptake has been particularly strong, with supermarket sales more than doubling since the same time last year.

Energy efficient light bulbs use up to 80 per cent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs.

“These results show that people are now seeing the wisdom of paying a little bit more for a product that will last for several years and save them money over the long term,” says marketing manager at the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) Paul Cording.

Supermarket sales are the tip of the iceberg, believes Paul, with DIY stores anecdotally reporting that sales of energy efficient LEDs have shot through the roof.

“They’re getting great results by focusing on the home building and renovation market, which makes sense when a new house might require at least 40 bulbs.”

Having DIY sales staff on hand to explain the products also makes a difference, as energy efficient lighting is a difficult category to shop for.

“People used to think in watts, which measure energy output. We now have to think in lumens, which measure the light output, or brightness.”

When switching to an energy efficient bulb, they need to remember three things – the type of base (screw or bayonet), brightness (light output or lumens) and bulb colour (warm or cool white).

The future for efficient light bulbs is bright, says Paul, with retailers and manufacturers expecting high quality and lower priced LEDs to push continued growth in dollar share and volume.

The cost of inefficient appliances You could be losing hundreds of dollars each year because of inefficient household appliances, says Christian Hoerning from EECA Energywise, who notes the true cost of an appliance isn’t on its price tag.

Ask yourself this: How much more money would you be willing to spend on an appliance that isn’t energy efficient? Christian says a fridge freezer model that doesn’t have an Energy Star label could cost you $900 more in running costs over its lifetime.

Household appliances, including washing machines and fridge freezers, are big ticket items. Running these appliances makes up about 40 per cent of the average household electricity bill.

When replacing old appliances, buying an energy efficient model can make a big difference. Most people keep whiteware, including fridge freezers and washing machines, for up to 15 years. So it’s worth choosing energy efficient models.

So how do consumers know an appliance is energy efficient? Christian says the blue Energy Star is a quick and easy way to identify energy efficient products. The Energy Star only appears on the most

energy efficient appliances, for most product groups that’s the top 25 per cent of models.

Shoppers can also use the Energy Rating Label that is found on appliances to compare the energy efficiency of similar appliances in the store. The Energy Rating Label also has stars.

The more stars, the more energy efficient the appliance is. The fewer the stars, the more you’ll spend on running costs.

The Energywise website has a running cost calculator where you can compare the running costs of many common household appliances.

At home, it’s worth thinking about the way your household uses appliances. Appliances left turned on at the wall are sucking up low levels of electricity, these appliances are on standby.

Turning these appliances off at the wall when you’re not using them could save a household about $100 a year.

Major culprits are home entertainment appliances, including stereos, game consoles and computer equipment. Plug them all into multi-plug boards so they can all be turned off properly at the same time.

Turning off washing machines and dryers at the wall will also save power.

Health and safety: What does that mean?

Builders have been walloped with several health and safety campaigns over recent years, and so I feel our industry is in reasonable shape to handle health and safety changes coming into play April 4, 2016.

Tradesmen who are currently active with health and safety will find the changes a step of bridging the knowledge gap. Those who have fallen behind with implementing safe work practices on site will be challenged with

getting these tidied up, as well as understanding who will be charged with leading best practice on and off the site. This effects subcontractors and head contractors equally, and is no longer about sub trades relying on someone else to take the lead.

Let’s face it, the whole of New Zealand is about to lift its game when dealing with occupational safety and with it I believe there needs to be a shift in thinking and questioning the “what does that

mean” behind best practice.

For example, what does it really mean to identify hazards, what does that look like?

A health and safety policy is like a building contract, lots of promises and agreements which have to be delivered. I encourage the trades to get professional assistance now, and ensure they understand how to implement their safety packs and understand the ‘what does that mean’ which sits behind it.

There are misconceptions that put people off shopping around for their power and the Electricity Authority is busting some of those myths.

Myth 1: It’s too hard to switch Switching power providers is actually very straightforward.

Myth 2: I haven’t heard of some of these new electricity retailers, so they might not be as good

Your choice of electricity retailer makes no difference to the reliability of your electricity supply.

The reliability of your electricity supply depends on the performance of your local distribution company and Transpower, which operate the national electricity grid. So, no matter which electricity retailer you choose the reliability of your supply will be the same.

Myth 3: If I switch providers, my power could be cut off during the process When switching providers, the only thing that changes is the provider that is billing you. Best of all, your new retailer takes care of the switching process.

Myth 4: Power companies all

have the same payment terms Many electricity retailers offer different payment options to make it easier. Some offer a way to level out all the payments during the year. This can take the sting out of the winter months when power bills tend to increase.

You can also prepay with some providers so you can more easily control your spending. Some providers allow you to pay weekly rather than monthly which can also suit some users.

It’s worth discussing payment options with your current providers – and also

considering the options when you shop around.

“My mother-in-law, that’s Marie Taylor, was keen to go. She was nearing 100-yearsold when we went in.

Anna decided to take a term off to help the underprivileged kids in the schools of Kampala.

“It’s a country that has always been in my heart.”

That’s because her dad Paul spent time in Uganda doing similar work. “I promised that one day I would accompany him. But he died when I was 15, before I got the chance.”

Now 13 years on Anna will honour that pledge to her dad. The teacher then told the pupil about her adventure. “Her whole face lit up.” And instantly she had a travel buddy.

Ashleigh’s family was shocked and surprised. Mention of Uganda triggers thoughts of despot Idi Amin, genocide, economic decline, social disintegration, and civil war.

“Not as dangerous as it used to be” says Anna. “There’s a lot of recovery happening.”

To assist that recovery Anna and Ashleigh will work in three primary schools.

“There’s a lot of rote learning in Uganda and the curriculum is quite flawed. So they want help with a new curriculum. That’s at a school with 200 kids in one big classroom.”

She says she is feeling a little out of her depth.

“But it’s a wonderful way of being challenged.”

And this is where you can help. “People keep asking me if I need books, or pens or whatever. But I can’t fill my bag with books for each of the 200 kids. So money seems the sensible way.”

Protection the best prevention Summer is officially here. Whatever you are doing in this beautiful outdoors lifestyle our country offers, protect your skin from ultraviolet radiation if you are outside between 10am and 5pm, whatever the weather. Make sure children are protected too.

Non-melanoma skin cancer is also rising at an alarming rate.

While not much can be done about your past sun exposure, protecting yourself better now will reduce your risk for dangerous skin cancers in later life.

choose shade and to wear long sleeves and trousers. Put on a broad brimmed hat, choose a shady place to spend the hottest part of the day and apply a sun block to all uncovered skin before you go out.

Choose a very high protection board spectrum sunscreen, Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 30+. Make sure it complies with the current Australian and New Zealand standard for sunscreens (AS2604:1992).

The Ministry of Health have published a list of some suitable products protecting against both UVB (.93 per cent) and UVA (.80 per cent) and if applied as directed, sunburn is unlikely.

In the water, use products marked water resistant as they are less likely to come off with sweating or swimming. Even those sunscreens promoting all day protection should still be reapplied after swimming or if rubbed off by clothing or a towel.

Make self-surveillance of your skin a priority this summer, any new or changing moles, rapidly growing lesions, or bleeding lesions, you should see your GP or dermatologist.

Why should we be ashamed to eat?

I can understand why secret eating has become more prevalent.

That’s where you hurriedly stuff yummy things into your mouth in private, behind the fridge door or with your head in the cupboard. I think the idea is that if no-one saw you, it didn’t happen.

It’s like when you eat half a chocolate and then eat the other half later – it didn’t count.

But the reason I think this behaviour seems to be on the increase is that we’re obsessed with food and what’s good, bad, sinful or naughty. Food has distinct categories these days, even class status.

Thin people who eat fancy health foods are somehow better than the rest of us who like to spread our butter thick. Flesh and fat are in the realms of filth and anxiety. Someone isn’t automatically a better person simply because they eat less, but that’s where our mindset is going.

I’m no nutritionist; I just go by the trial and error of my own hips and logic that surely everything in moderation is the way forward? It’s simple calories in, calories out isn’t it? I mean if you take in too many calories and don’t exert enough energy to equalise them, you put on weight.

There’s clearly an obesity health problem emerging,

but I think this is sometimes exacerbated because there’s so much focus on food, so much advice, talk and binge dieting fads.

The number of people I know who yo-yo like mad because they take on the latest eating craze: juicing, 5:2 (that’s where you fast for two days and eat normally the rest). What’s next?

A couple of weeks ago you’d have felt like a criminal to scoff a cheeky slice of streaky bacon on a Saturday morning. We were going to get cancer from it, apparently. Fortunately some experts came in to temper what was a blown-up story about how cured meats are going to kill you. Not so, we just need to apply the common sense logic of moderation.

If I have another person tell me I should watch ‘That Sugar Film’, I might just shove my face full of lollies. Sugar is the new evil, along with white bread.

I feel sorry for white bread. It’s sustained families for hundreds of years and I still love it and it’s been given a bad rap. It’s fabulous stuff and doesn’t make me feel at all bloated. In fact it makes me feel deeply happy and satisfied. And so do lollies (especially those chewy cola bottles). I just try not to overeat them.

I don’t always succeed, but hey, there are worse things to worry about in life and enjoyment of food should count for something.

health & beauty Puffy ankles? Here’s the fix One of the more common problems I deal with is lower leg circulation problems.

Typically the area around the ankles becomes swollen especially towards the end of the day.

Long distance travel can make them worse. If you have swollen ankles you should see your GP as there are many potential causes.

The good news is there is a lot we can do through diet and supplements. Our blood vessels are living tissue and are affected by accumulated free-radical damage.

In the absence of a specific medical cause the problem is usually a combination of poor vein, capillary or lymphatic function.

Slow age-related changes can cause capillaries to fail. Some are so tiny that red blood cells roll single file to bring oxygen and nutrients to individual cells.

It is normal for fluid to leak out of blood vessels into surrounding tissue. We have special ‘clean up’ lymph vessels that collect this fluid and return it to our blood for general circulation.

I have been helping someone with worsening fluid retention in her lower legs and needed fluid control (diuretic) medication. We made some changes to diet but really attacked this by adding potent supplements that help micro-circulation.

In it for the long haul... and beyond The end of week five, and the halfway stage of my LIFE Personal Fitness camp has been reached (not that I’m counting down the days). If I’ve learnt anything so far, it’s the importance of what you do in between sessions.

Application and exertion aren’t straightforward at the best of times, but surrounded by my fellow campers in the studio or at the foot of Mount Drury, the effort required to get through our sessions is easier to find.

The current Monday/ Wednesday/Thursday schedule gets the working week off to a blistering start, with

a brisk stomp up the Mount inserted on a Tuesday evening the perfect way to keep the body moving.

Predictably, it’s exercise on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday that poses the problem – and that’s alongside battling the usual suspects of too much alcohol, late

nights and an assortment of food I’m not allowed to eat.

The challenge, though, is a pertinent one. In just five-weeks, the experts at LIFE Personal Fitness won’t be around to offer words of encouragement and hold my hand through the rights and wrongs of exercise.

As I’ve mentioned on these pages before, the group mentality is a huge bonus – especially for a beginner like me – but the idea is to keep this regime going beyond the 10-week programme and avoid slipping in to ‘box-set’ mode over Christmas.

What’s to blame for the summertime itch?

It’s one of nature’s enduring mysteries, one of summertime’s great unanswered questions.

Is phycosecis limbata being unfairly demonised? Is the translucent maggot guilty or not guilty of causing excruciating discomfort and itchy, sleep deprived nights for dozens, if not hundreds of vulnerable beach goers?

“Like hot needles,” complained one victim.

“A burning, hot prickling sensation.”

Another described her alleged brush with the phycosecis limbata as her “most insufferable itchy experience ever”.

The symptoms are indisputable, but whether phycosecis limbata is the perpetrator is arguable. Popular opinion, and even the experts, are divided over whether phycosecis, aka ‘The Mount Mauler’, is the culprit.

“I have identified it,” says Amcal Mount Dispensary chemist Mark Bedford, “And I know it bloody bites because I can show you pictures of patients over 20 years.”

Mark has been dispensing antihistamines and soothing creams to victims for 25 years.

And in the blue corner, beetle specialist Dr Richard Leschen.

“I am not convinced,” says the Landcare

Research scientist. “To insinuate that it is phycosecis is a little misguided. Because where’s the scientific evidence?”

This is phycosecis’ time. From now until the end of January it’s lurking in the soft sand above the high tide mark on the beach. And maybe attacking people and leaving them covered in bites and welts.

“If someone comes in the shop, and they’re covered in welts and they’ve been to the beach in the last couple of days, playing in the soft sand, then dollars to doughnuts the little buggers have been at it,” says Mark.

Mark says you are aware of something crawling on your skin. “But you don’t feel a biting sensation until a couple of days later and then it’s too late. You have been hammered.”

The bug man Richard Leschen, is both a scientist and an expert responsible for researching between 7000 and 10,000 species of New Zealand bugs.

He’s traded points of view with Mark, but two years later the men respectfully disagree.

Richard says we need medical research when all we have is anecdotal observation.

“One observation is that the beetles are present on the beach and the second is people are getting bitten by something.

But bitten by what?”

The scientist has his own theories. A couple of years ago he saw TV news footage of a woman with what were purported to be Mount Mauler bites. “But my immediate reaction was, ‘That lady has heat rash.’”

But what causes the hideous bites and welts? “There will be different reactions for different people. But whether they are

getting heat rash or being bitten by midges, black flies, sand flies or whatever, I have no idea.”

The pharmacist says what’s required is for someone to let phycosecis limbata to crawl all over them. Some solid, indisputable medical research in other words.

But it seems no-one’s been up for that.

“The itching is so intense you basically have to be treated with antihistamines and a bottle of wine and hope for the best.”

The scientist wants answers not a fight. And he has apparently told the chemist he would be keen to work with him, to get some money to figure this one out.

“Every year I think I can’t be bothered with this anymore. Then someone comes in covered in welts and I think, ‘If I make more noise, someone might take notice.’”

In the meantime beach-goers are warned – ignore the phycosecis limbata, the Mount Mauler at your peril.

Worry not! Time to embrace the present Worry often gives a small thing a great shadow – SWEDISH PROVERB In the past, the number of times I worried and worked myself up over a situation are too many to count. The more time I spent worrying over something the bigger it seemed to grow as I added new scenarios, possibilities and ‘what if ’s’ to it.

In more recent times I’ve often made the choice to share what I’m worrying about with a trusted friend, and almost immediately it becomes smaller. I am able to put things into perspective when I hear what is going on in my head,

and the shadows recede.

What also helps is that the other person, who is removed from the situation, is able to help me gain a clearer and more objective picture as we discuss it.

health & beauty Why men are becoming Aotearoa guardians Men are being invited to a meeting hosted by men for men.

Men Changing Men – Guardians of Aotearoa is a meeting being held twice a month on Wednesdays in Papamoa at the Papamoa Surf Lifesaving Club.

The aim of the meeting is to provide men with the tools to be able to make better choices in regards to domestic violence.

Colin Gardiner, Tauha Te Kani and Pene Reuben are the organisers of these meetings.

“It’s about giving men choices and to take charge of their lives,” says Colin.

“It’s about making better decision rather than using fists or their mouths to assault people.”

The vision statement for the meetings is “strengthening men to stand as the guardians of their family, community and nation”.

Colin says this initiative was born from his involvement with the

‘It’s not ok’ campaign and saw a gap where there was a need for something like this and to get men helping men.

“It’s about men changing men. And that’s where we see it helping our woman and children.

“This is a fresh programme for men. No sciences attached or international influences. New Zealand men changing New Zealand men for a better future.

“Our men will tell us what they need and we will provide the resource by way of our meetings with no sciences attached and no long winded drawn out programmes.

Their successes will be our stories.”

Colin says they are taking this on the chin as responsible men and want to help men change men.

“As we progress, families and the community will benefit from better men serving as the role models they should be.”

The next meeting is held on Wednesday, November 25 from 7pm-9pm.

That’s because there has been some serious “knitting and nattering” going down at the village where today about 60 homegrown teddy bears went on display.

A teddy bear can be a comfort and a distraction for a distressed and unwell child. Others will be given to Plunket.

Every Monday afternoon the knitters gather at Althorp.

They’re supplied with needles, donated wool and patterns, then let loose to bring their own stamp and style to a teddy bear.

The toys are all brothers and sisters really because the faces come from one family. Janice Jeffries is an embroiderer and has the necessary creative skills to put the faces on each and every teddy bear.

“Even the guys were saying nice things when they saw the teddy bears today,” says Noelene.

And what was all this about a former US president? President Roosevelt gave his name to teddy bears. He was out on a big game hunt and declined the offer to shoot a bear as a trophy.

The story about his act of kindness quickly spread and a storeowner in Brooklyn made toy bears to put in his shop. President Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt gave his permission to use his name for the toys.

This week the results of the Althorp knitting group’s teddy bear drive went on display at the retirement village.

“Ours were looking pretty neat,” says Noelene.

“We were just looking for an end for year project.” And they stumbled on a good one, a worthwhile one that will bring a lot of comfort to a lot of kids.”

The annual event aims to find New Zealand’s most tender and tasty lamb.

Farmers enter their lamb to be assessed by Carne Technologies in Cambridge for tenderness, yield, succulence and colour.

Testing determines which will make it through to the final stage of the competition, a taste test, held at the Upper Clutha A&P show in March 2016.

Take a walk on the wild side Risotto is a type of Italian starchy rice dish that cooks into a creamy consistency.

It is classically paired with earthy wild mushrooms and Parmesan cheese. Serve it as a first course, or as a side dish with chicken or pork.

The recipe comes from the ‘Easy Paleo Snacks Cookbook’.

Wild Mushroom Risotto

• 60g or 1/4 cup dried porcini mushrooms • 5 cups chicken stock • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 small onion, minced • 2 cups brown rice • 1/2 cup low-fat parmesan cheese, freshly grated • Sea salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste Method: 1. Place the mushrooms in a bowl and cover them with hot water. Set them aside for 30 minutes. Drain them, reserving the liquid, and wash them.

Strain the liquid through a sieve lined with cheesecloth. Add the liquid to the chicken stock.

2. Heat the chicken stock and mushroom liquid in a small saucepan. When simmering, turn heat to lowest setting.

3. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté for 3–5 minutes, or until tender.

4. Stir in the rice and mushrooms and 3/4 cup of the stock. Continue cooking the rice, stirring almost constantly, and

adding more liquid, a ladleful at a time, as soon as the rice absorbs the liquid.

There should always be some liquid visible in the pan.

5. Cook, adding liquid every few minutes, until the rice is tender, with a slightly firm centre, about 20-30 minutes.

6. Remove from the heat and stir in the Parmesan cheese, a spoonful at a time.

7. Season to taste and serve.

Putting to rest potato rumours The poor potato – once a staple vegetable in many Kiwi’s diets, now has been relegated to the bad book of ‘unhealthy foods’.

But did you know this carbohydrate is packed full of dietary fibre and is a source of both vitamin C and niacin, great for building immunity, glowing skin and healthy brain function?

Potatoes New Zealand are amazing value nutritionally and economically. Gone are the days where the options were simply mashed, boiled or roasted – there’s plenty of options making this versatile snack or dinner food.

Try these salsa stuffed baked potatoes for a quick and easy lunch option, which are absolutely delicious served with a fresh salad.

Salsa stuffed baked potatoes

Preparation: 10 minutes Cooking: 1 hour (depending on the size of the potatoes) Serves: 4 to 6 Ingredients: • 4 to 6 Agria Potatoes of similar size

Salsa ingredients: • 1 handful cherry tomatoes, halved • 1/2 red onion, finely chopped • 1 avocado, diced • 1 yellow capsicum, deseeded and diced • 1 clove garlic, crushed • 2 fresh green chilli’s, finely chopped • Juice of one lemon or lime Topping: • Grated Cheese (optional) • Coriander leaves (to taste), torn • Natural Greek Yoghurt (we used low fat) Method: 1. Pre-heat oven to 180°C. 2. Prick all potatoes twice with a fork and place on wire oven rack and bake for about an hour or until cooked through.

3. Combine all salsa ingredients in a bowl 4. Cut a cross in the potatoes, sprinkle some cheese (we used Edam) into each potato and load up with salsa.

5. Top with a dollop of yoghurt and coriander leaves and serve with a fresh salad.

Loan restrictions are becoming a challenge Two years ago I wrote an article after the reserve bank changed the requirements enforcing tighter loan restrictions on registered banks were you could not borrow more than 80 per cent of a property’s value mainly top curb Auckland’s housing crisis.

Two years down the track have these restrictions worked? I don’t believe so.

The reserve bank brought in further restrictions in October this year whereby investors in the Auckland region needed a 30 per cent deposit.

But all this has done has pushed

these investors into the regions such as Hamilton and Tauranga where they believe they can get a bargain compared to Auckland’s prices.

House inflation is still peaking.

Property values in these regions have now increased dramatically

over the last six months with some properties selling hundreds of thousands of dollars above GVs. Most lenders are exceeding their quota of lending money over this ratio. So it is proving almost impossible to get funding if you are looking to borrow funds

with a low deposit. First home buyers are being squeezed out of the market and even when you do manage to scrape together a decent size deposit you cannot compete at auction, which seems to be the preferred selling method these days.

This can be good news is you are selling but for a large percentage of the population trying to get onto the property ladder. It’ll mean an even longer wait, if ever, to secure that first home, ultimately creating a nation of renters – that’s if you can find somewhere to rent!

Booming city puts stress on our locals Houses selling quickly, an influx of migration and a host of jobs being listed online are great for our city. But a booming city also means higher rent, fewer families able to buy their first homes, many that do become ‘house poor’, and an overwhelming number of jobs are taken up by new migrants.

This can be very hard on the people that already live here. New Zealand First has housing and employment policies aimed at alleviating these pressures through direct government intervention.

Among New Zealand First housing policies is the sale of residential sections under long term agreements for sale and

purchase (up to 25 years) to first home buyers, on a cost recovery basis, so that first home buyers will have access to sections which are affordable, reducing the overall initial capital cost of a new home by about one-third.

We also advocate for two per cent interest rates for at least the first five years, then rising to lowest market rates.

We firmly oppose the sale of state housing. We cannot allow the care for society’s most vulnerable

to sit in the hands of foreign corporations and risk them being managed through profit-driven entities.

We also propose creating more jobs and more variety in the types of jobs available by moving to a more innovative economic policy. As an example, if we stop exporting raw materials and focus on exporting finished goods, we will create more jobs whilst commanding higher prices on the international stage.

The right government policies can help mitigate some of the major challenges we’re facing as a city as we continue to grow and expand.

Growing great art in the backyard It’s a delightful garden setting – that’s what people tell Frances Woltman. And just ideal for the Open Garden for Art this weekend.

Frances explains it’s the sort of garden where she buys a plant she likes and then has to find a place to put it. We’ve all had that problem after a lazy Sunday afternoon at a garden centre.

You stop off for coffee and spend $100 on plants.

“But my garden seems to work because people comment on it,” says Frances.

Frances is organising her second Open Garden for Art at 20 Primrose Place, Papamoa, from 9am to 4.30pm both days.

“The idea is to give people an indication of what art is out there, what people are doing and what’s available.”

And what’s available, at least at Open Garden for Art is mosaics, painting and knitwear. The artists will be at work in France’s garden – they’ll have work on display and some of it will be for sale with part proceeds going to Waipuna Hospice.

Frances is a glass mosaic artist.

“Twelve years ago I watched someone doing a glass mosaic and I thought I can do better than that.” Now she says she spends too much time at it.

She likens it to painting with glass. And Frances shows a metre-wide work of a peacock. If it was for sale she would ask $1800.

There will be four other mosaic artists exhibiting on Saturday and Sunday, November 14 and 15. So it’s an open house, or open garden, an exhibition of local art and some not so local. And all for a gold coin, which will also go to the Waipuna Hospice.

One of the exhibiting artists will be Liz Roelefson, a helper from Waipuna Hospice, which is a nice touch. And Frances would love to see “loads of people having an art experience and supporting Waipuna Hospice at the same time”.

Stitching up the weekend It’s a suitcase that’s travelled the country – a suitcase filled with quilts.

The New Zealand Quilters Suitcase Exhibition is a touring exhibition of 21 quilts under 1m2 and stitched using varied quilting techniques by quilt artists throughout New Zealand.

The quilt-filled touring suitcase will be on display at Tauranga Patchwork and Quilter’s Group’s Club Open Weekend at Tauranga Arts and Crafts Centre this Saturday and Sunday.

The open weekend will showcase the Aotearoa Quilters Green 12x12 Challenge Exhibition of about 100 12 inch by 12 inch square greencoloured quilts.

A selection of club member’s quilts will also be on display, including Tauranga quilter Melanie Martin’s

award winning quilt ‘Is it Art?’ Melanie’s been quilting for 28 years.

“It really spoke to me,” says Melanie.

“I love the whole process of making a quilt.”

The Tauranga quilter has recently started designing her own quilts and teaching techniques.

“The most unexpected and enjoyable part of quilting and belonging to the club is the sisterhood and the friends I have made.”

The group will also be exhibiting works from their Club Challenge 2015, which challenged quilters to make a 16 inch by 24 inch quilt using fabrics in their designated colour.

Bay of Plenty quilters can also learn and watch quilting techniques at the exhibition at Tauranga Arts and Crafts Centre on November 14-15 from 10am-4pm. Entry is free.

Submissions were recently received

One of the Mount Maunganui submitters spoke to his submission and urged council to consider ‘health’ in conjunction with ‘safety’. Deliberations on the submissions received are set down for the Strategy and Policy meeting on December 7, 2015.

Sibling rivalry extends to the race track When it comes to brotherly love, Bay of Plenty motocross riders Cohen and Wyatt Chase have plenty of it. But on the track it can be a different thing.

The Taupo lads fought side by side and both of them finished the annual Waikato Motocross Championships standing on the podium.

Although the two young men do train together, it is only rarely the siblings compete against one another,

17-year-old Cohen (Yamaha YZ250F) now in the senior ranks and focussed on the MX2 (250cc) class, while his 16-year-old brother Wyatt is still classified as a junior and his weapon of choice is a Yamaha YZ125.

But they raced in flying formation at the weekend in Te Kuiti, the pair of them lining up alongside one another in the senior MX2 class.

Kiwi international Josiah Natzke won the class, but Cohen and Wyatt finished second and third respectively, consistency giving them the edge over the two riders forced to share fourth spot overall, Taupo’s Brad Groombridge and

Cambridge’s Trent Collins.

“We raced this event as part of our build-up for the New Zealand Motocross Championships (set to kick off near Timaru on February 7),” Cohen says.

Cohen will contest the MX2 class at the nationals and Wyatt will line up in the senior 125cc division.

“We’ve still got a few things to sort out before then and I think it’s just a matter of time before we’ll be set to win,” Cohen says.

For younger brother Wyatt, the weekend was twice as fruitful.

He won the combined junior 125cc and 250cc class on Saturday, finishing 1-1-2 despite riding his 125cc bike against 250cc riders (giving him a

1-1-1 score-line in the 125cc class when the 125cc and 250cc competitors were separated out).

Wyatt then raced the senior MX2 class the following day “just to get some extra bike time to build strength and stamina” for the senior nationals.

“I crashed and broke my collarbone in the first race at the opening round at the senior nationals last year, but then bounced back to win the junior nationals in April after being back on

the bike only three weeks,” Wyatt says.

“I knew it would be tough against the 250cc bikes in the MX2 class, especially in the starts, where I’d lose the drag race to turn one, and that meant I had to fight through traffic. But that was excellent training for me.”

Meanwhile, Mount Maunganui’s national MX1 champion Cody Cooper won the MX1 class at Te Kuiti, while Mangakino’s Maximus Purvis won the Greg Taipari senior 125cc class.

‘Make mine a Mustang, Sally’ Petrol-heads are in for a special treat if they go to the Bay of Plenty Mustang Club’s annual Extreme Automotive All USA Car Day, according to club member Graham Coombes.

The event, which sees various makes of Mustangs and American-built cars put on display at Wharepai Domain, will be held again this Sunday. The cars will start arriving from 8am and it will be open to the public at 10am.

Graham says they have a special treat for those who attend the show.

“One of the feature cars of that show is – one of the guys in our club has got a brand new Shelby Mustang Super Snake. This is the top of the line Mustang. He got it made in America and he got it brought in.”

Plus on top of the feature car, Graham says it is the 50th Anniversary for Carrol Shelby who had input into the

designing of the AC Cobra and later the Shelby Mustangs.

“Ford made the Mustang then they looked to Carrol Shelby to make a racing Mustang. Then they made production Shelby Mustangs after that.”

Along with the different types of Mustangs the club members have on display, Graham says they invite anyone who has an American car to bring it down to show it off.

“Whether it be a stock standard classic or hot rodded or whatever. We end up with some American trucks, we end up with the odd motorbike. The day pretty much covers classic cars, hot rods, obviously Mustangs. They’ll all be there.”

Graham himself will have his pride and joys on display.

“I’ve got two Mustangs. I’ve got an original 1964-and-a-half convertible.

One of the first ones made and I’ve also got a 2011, what they call a Californian Special, which my wife

drives to work every day.”

A self-confessed petrol-head, Graham says he has always had a passion for cars.

“I had hot rods for many years. Then I got interested in basically the history of cars. So that’s why it came down to the Mustang, I liked American cars.

“The Mustang seemed to me to have a lot of history.

Obviously it’s like the Levi jeans and Coca-Cola – it’s an American icon.”

Last year’s event was a great success, Graham says, with about 200 vehicles, from early vintage models to pickups and customised cars and hot rods being put on display. As many as 4000 people came down to check out the event and organisers are expecting it to be just as popular this year.

Current events in water issue The Iwi Leaders Freshwater Group was formed in 2007 to advance freshwater rights for Maori through direct engagement with The Crown. On Waitangi Day this year, they gave the government an ultimatum of one year in which to achieve this.

This is too much of a hot potato to John Key, so he has passed control of the subject to regional councils and unitary authorities.

The deal to give freshwater rights to Maori is progressing right now behind the closed doors of the BOP Regional Council and they fully know of the huge controversy

this would cause if this were to be made public.

One fact that has disappeared from the debate over the current tribal claim for water is that chiefs sold the rivers, lakes, and streams with land they sold in the 19th century.

For example, in 1864 Waikato

Maori sold the Horotiu and Waipa Block area for £1000 ($106,838 in today’s money according to the Reserve Bank inflation calculator) Included in the deed of sale are “trees, minerals, waters, rivers, lakes, streams and all pertaining to the said land or beneath the surface of the said land” – so effectively that puts out the Waikato-Tainui tribes for any deals on water.

This must become the subject of a binding referendum for all New Zealanders. If ever there was a time to stand up and be counted, this is it!

Protesting TPP no laughing matter Have always been a bit of a fan of your paper, particularly Rogers Rabbits – I’ve always found it to present a light-hearted approach with a side of common sense that’s probably lacking in the NZ media.

But I’ve got to say your latest column ridiculing protests against these free trade agreements and the TPP in particular disappointed me and stank of National arse kissing.

I am one of the people who protested and will protest again against this agreement. At 39 I’ve never felt strongly enough about anything to take to the streets and chant silly slogans before.

power grabs disguised as trade agreements and in the research I’ve done I cannot see how giving up our sovereignty and conforming to foreign corporate methods for conducting business will be good for NZ. The mass media have been using the tactic of ridicule to marginalise those who speak out against the corporatisation of this beautiful planet we call home – and you have stooped to that same level. People are protesting out of genuine concern, not because its fun to rhyme things with TPPA. A Steward, Tauranga.

Housing market drives out local buyers Reporter Andrew Campbell’s revealing article about the failure of the Blake Lofts apartment development in Mt Maunganui (‘Apartment development fails’, November 6), highlights a problem in providing reasonably priced housing in this city.

Blake Lofts was a well-planned and designed private development of moderately priced apartments, which met a clear need in the housing market. Many people (including prospective buyers) will be disappointed that this

development will not go ahead , due to an offer for the site made directly to the landowner behind the developers back.

Maybe getting a higher price for the site is more important for some than developing it for apartments that people can afford.

This is an example of the free market at its worst. No wonder there is a shortage of reasonably priced housing in Mt Maunganui.

After our talking up Otumoetai’s considerate and respectful neighbour who sent out a polite handwritten note warning of an upcoming party and how they planned to minimise the noise, we have reports of another sort of party. An unannounced party, a very loud, boisterous, teenage Halloween party.

“Wish our neighbour had accorded us the same courtesy,” says our disgruntled reader. Body bags in the drive, crosses bearing the names of the invitees up the drive, zombies and a chainsaw-wielding character chasing young girls. Arguably inappropriate for 15-year-olds or thereabouts, says our complainant.

But it was just all the screaming. No warning, no explanation, no apology. And with several elderly and frail neighbours they say it could have been handled differently and better.

BARBED WIRE I have been wondering about it for months. It looks like a shelter for a waka and it sits amongst the trees at the top of The Strand. The odd visitor wanders up this end of town, sees something that looks like a waka in a shelter, scratches his or her head and then wanders off. Swampy hollow transformed into a stunning garden It took a special vision for Lorna and Chris Yandle to see beyond thigh-high grass, a few goat-chewed trees and a swampy hollow to image how a 4ha Pahoia property could become a beautiful garden.

But vision they had and 17 years, and a great deal of hard work on, the property is a stunning garden set around a lovely home on the edge of the Tauranga Harbour.

For the first time Lorna and Chris are opening the garden they have lovingly created to the public as part of the Katikati Rotary Club’s Up the Garden Path ramble on November 14 and 15.

Chris credits Lorna for the garden design and she in turn credits Chris, and gardeners Andrew Townsend of Townsend Landscaping and Fritz van Rensburg with turning her vision into a reality.

“There was a small patch of native bush but hardly any other trees apart from a few stunted by the goats chewing them, and lots of grass and weeds.”

A large pond, created from a former swamp, is a focal point of Chris and Lorna Yandle’s garden which is part of the Katikati Rotary Club’s Up the Garden Path ramble in November.

The swamp in front of the home the couple built was excavated to form a large pond, and Chris and Andrew constructed the waterfall and stream which meanders through a gully to flow into it.

Lorna has planned the garden in a series of ‘rooms’ so as you stroll along its lawn or pathways, the plantings subtly change in a merging of colours, forms and species.

There’s a woodland of Japanese Maples and nearby native trees and shrubs under-planted with exotics for colour, flourish in the gully with its pretty stone waterfall.

Clever groupings of plants for colour and texture create the grey garden, conifer room and rhododendron walk with its spring bulbs and violets.

The focal point of the garden is

the large pond with an island in the middle, which is popular with visiting wild water fowl, including ducks and shags. The garden’s colour and form changes with the season.

Lorna and Chris have decided to share their garden with the public through the Katikati Rotary Club’s Up the Garden Path ramble because all the proceeds go to help the Katikati community.

It is one of 13 stunning gardens open on Saturday and Sunday November 14 and 15.

Tickets cost $20 per person for two days and there is a discounts for coach parties.

Facing the Forgotten Millions “There was a young boy I photographed with a shrapnel wound on his head,” remembers photographer Jo Currie. “We’d met his family, learned their story and formed a bit of a connection.

“But he died a week after we were there. It’s one of the photos in this exhibition which really stands out for me.”

This weekend is your final chance to view photographs captured by Jo for World Vision New Zealand’s Forgotten Millions campaign that presents the human face of the ongoing Syrian Crisis.

The free exhibition which features about 40 images that were captured by Jo when she travelled to the Middle East and Europe to document crisis with World Vision staff and journalist Rachel Smalley.

“Despite what they’ve been through,” says Jo, “the people were all really welcoming and generous to us, and they have hope they can still return home. Their resilience has left quite an impression on me.”

The Forgotten Millions exhibition is one of several events that have taken place across Tauranga as part of World Vision NZ’s inaugural Bit by Bit Week, which finishes on Sunday.

What wood would you like?

Despite the world becoming an increasingly digital sphere, demand has never been higher for hands-on woodwork skills, says Tauranga Woodcrafters Guild member George Yardley.

“We hold a scroll saw seminar once a year, which is attended by people from throughout the country who want to learn these things,” he says.

The organiser of the Tauranga Woodcrafters Craft Expo also expects the annual event to be a hit next weekend, with plenty of knowledgeable members on hand to share their skills with the public.

“They get an up-close look at woodcrafting artistry available here in the Bay,” he says of the event.

“We have live demonstrations going on so people can see woodturning

and wood carving being done. We have live demos of scroll saw work,

as well as prep work, so visitors can see those things getting done or talk to people if they are interested in getting involved with the guild.”

It’s also a great opportunity to pick up one-of-a-kind gifts for Christmas, such as bowls and serving dishes, wooden platters or children’s toys.

Who will save us?

As we view the news of the world, we are bombarded with tragedy.

Take the refugee situation in Europe, brought on by incompetent and greedy dictators.

Then we have ‘global warming’ brought on by the use of vehicles and some greenhouse gases such as cows. But a simple check of how the earth’s orbit varies enough over thousands of years to cause ice ages, droughts etc is conclusive.

These happenings are predicted in the Bible, wars and rumours of wars, fear will cause men’s hearts to fail them.

We cannot predict the exact time when Jesus shall return (many false prophets have tried to predict this), but the signs definitely point to very soon when believers will be removed from the earth, there then

will be chaos on the earth.

A simple question arises, “What must I do to be saved”?

Receive Jesus and find out more about Him at your local church.

Often having ‘wired friends’ only increases their personal sense of isolation. Sometimes Facebook friends are cruel in their comments and cyberbullying is all too common. Young people worry about feeling alone. The researchers point to the close relationship between loneliness and metal health issues such as increased stress, depression, anxiety, addictions, even suicide.

We are made for face to face contact, for sharing our hopes, dreams and disappointments with others. We are made to give support to one another. We can combat loneliness by encouraging young people to belong to a youth groups.

Churches have youth groups which are safe and supportive places for our youth to grow and develop. The fact is everyone gets lonely. The church itself, was meant by God to be a place of support, friendship and caring. A place were good friendships are formed. Maybe its time for you to check out a church this week.

These days’ people need to belong while they sought out what they believe. I’m sure you would be made to feel very welcome.

More than just a bargain at Oasis An opportunity shop serves an important role in a community.

It’s a retail establishment run by a charitable organisation to raise funds, a type of social enterprise selling goods donated by public and often staffed by volunteers.

For some it’s a place to simply shop for a bargain, for others it’s the only place they can afford to shop.

Bureta’s newest op shop, located walking distance from St John’s Anglican Church in the upper Bureta Rd shopping precinct, offers all of this and that little bit more.

It’s in the name: Oasis Drop-in and Op Shop. As well as a charity store supporting St John’s Anglican Church, it’s an oasis – a sanctuary or escape for people who purely want to drop in for a cup of tea and a chat.

St John’s Anglican Church reverend Julie Guest says the principal aim for the op shop is to create a place in the community, with the opportunity to raise funds for outreach programmes

“The drop in aspect is for people to come in if they’re needing a place to sit and have a chat and a cup of tea, then that’s available.

“For us hospitality is part of the Christian ethos and it’s really important to offer that.”

Julie says the new op shop provides another face for the church in the community, as well as helping the community in need.

“We want to offer people, who can’t

afford things that are new, quality goods they can buy, which I think is an increasing need.

“I also think the people who are serving there as volunteers also, in some ways, have had a place to belong.”

The new Oasis Drop-in and Op Shop official opened on November 4 and each room has been blessed by Bishop Andrew Hedge of the Anglican Diocese of Waiapu with prayers and holy water.

The Bishop says the parishioners can be justifiably proud of what they are offering to the local community through the shop, which encompasses hospitality, servanthood, community building and business enterprise all in one place.

The Oasis Drop-in and Op Shop is open 10am4pm Monday to Friday.

Pokies discussion goes public Tauranga ratepayers are to be asked to submit on the city’s pokie machine numbers after an attempt to limit the gambling machines numbers failed at the Strategy and Policy committee meeting this week.

The city’s gambling venues policy is required to by law to be reviewed every three years.

Staff are asking councillors whether the new policy should reduce the number of gambling machines in the city and whether to include a relocation clause – to allow owners of gambling machines to be able to take their machines from one venue to another.

Councillor Steve Morris received some support for a motion for the Strategy and Policy Committee to set a ‘sinking lid’ policy; stop issuing new licenses, and refuse to allow the machines’ to be transferred if their venue closes.

This is the best way to reduce harm caused by this type of gambling, says Steve, which is the stated aim of the council policy.

He also challenged the financial returns from gambling saying both TECT and the BayTrust return far more to the people of Tauranga than the $1.6 million from pokie machine operator Pub Charity.

He was outvoted with councillors challenging his criticism of what he referred to as daytime trackie-clad pokie players, saying they might be shift workers. That the reason other cities might be successfully operating a sinking lid policy is because they are not growing.

Since 2007 the numbers of pokies operating in Tauranga have dropped from 615 to 529. The venues have reduced in number from 44 to 37 – but the percentages have grown with the number of venues and sites making up a slightly larger proportion of the national average than in previous years.

Based on the 2015 city population of 120,819 the current policy allows 821 pokies. The city is at 64 per cent capacity within the policy, meaning there is scope for pokie growth.

Understanding the jargon Why don’t they just tell it as it is?

Unfeasibly small, two-bedroom house with dampness issues, in need of a makeover, handkerchief-size section, no privacy, shared driveway, gang HQ next door and vendor with inflated expectations.

We understand that.

Instead we get “suburban jewel waiting for a special touch, manageable section, neighbourhood support, ideal for new entrants and realistically priced.”

Euphemisms in real estate advertising are entertaining, if not frustrating, especially if we front up to see the reality. However it must be difficult for an agency to put a gloss on some of the products they are trying to move.

So what do the real estate agents say and what do they really mean?

Loads of potential – Falling apart.

First home buyers – Paupers.

Sea views – If you stand on the second storey roof with binoculars and crane your neck on a clear day you get a glimpse.

Very private – Back lot on a

sub-divided section.

Cosy – tiny.

Full of character – Toilet and shower in the kitchen.

Eclectic – Random unfathomable mess.

Original – Needs expensive makeover and no-one has the money nor the inclination to try.

Comfortable – Worn to the point of threadbare.

Close to nightlife – Bedsit above an all-night bar and music venue.

One of a kind – There’s a reason they didn’t make two.

Rustic – Run down.

Open living – The bedroom, bathroom and toilet are in one room.

Olde worlde – just means old, rundown and generally undesirable and unliveable.

Garden level – you will be living in the basement.

Funky – one day it means interesting; another someone’s botched DIY.

Anyhow, if you are pitching something for sale it’s understandable – all of us would try to soften the downsides.
