Desperately seeking the asylum Asylum seekers are on the news, and I must say, there are times when I think it would be good to go back there.

I really miss those days in the asylum, with the rest of the team. Sometimes it’s not the same out in the real world. I’m not surprised that people from around the world are seeking the asylum.

Then there are days, here on the outside, when I look around myself and wonder if I ever really left.

Meanwhile, those Chinese people on the boat looked like nice folk. I reckon we should let them into New Zealand.

They’ll probably make honest, hardworking and law abiding citizens, which is more than can be said for half the people here already.

Perhaps we should take them as a trade, and get rid of a few of the useless sods? Load the boat up with losers and point it north. Even back to Australia would do, we’ve unloaded a fair

few no-hopers there already another boatload isn’t going to hurt.

I’ve already started a list of those we can ship out on the first boat. Trouble is, the list gets longer every day and we might need more boats. We don’t want a stampede, and no pushing Mr Minto onboard; give him a chance to get his baggage in order – I assume he’ll take Ms Bradford with him.

It’s probably worth putting word out amongst the other asylum seekers out there, with boats, to come on down. Bring a good attitude and learn some English, and we’ll backload your boat with freeloading bludgers, criminals, troublemakers and professional protesters.

The asylum seekers may have solved the problem for New Zealand, with the last reports suggesting they would try to stay in Darwin; a good option to save NZ the hassle and cost of processing and rehabilitating them.

Katikati’s ukulele festival Participation, having fun and making music is the theme of the second Bay of Plenty Ukulele Festival on April 20-22.

Last year, more than 300 ukulele-toting locals and visitors strummed along throughout the weekend. The local Katikati Ukulele Group, Ukes-A-Plenty, says this year’s festival will be more exciting and all-inclusive.

Participation means plenty of opportunities for visiting ukulele

players to branch out and perform, busking in the street, in the open mic session, or at the music jams.

Katikati Ukulele Group was formed in 2010. It meets once a week, on Thursday evenings at Homewood Park Tennis Club. Their aim is to play music together, sing, learn and have fun.

Meanwhile, back in the city, there’s a furore going again over the historic village, which is drawing a heap of comments on SunLive.

So many people would like to see the village restored to its former glory and again play the role of the region’s museum. On the surface it makes a lot more sense than letting the village fall

into ruin. It also would seem a better option for the museum pieces, rather than having them in storage at massive cost to ratepayers.

However, what many well intentioned folk are overlooking is the massive cost of getting the village into a suitable state to home the relics, comply with stiffer local body regulations and be safe from floods. The place is built on a swamp and even to stop the regular flooding would require earthworks in the millions.

There’s no easy answer to all this, despite the wishful thinking of many.

Puke-ulele

Love ’em or hate ’em, a major infestation of ukuleles is happening in Katikati, home of murals and questionable musical tastes.

Winston Watusi this week bravely plucks at the very heartstrings of the ukulele fraternity (see the entertainment pages) He stopped short of using my suggested headline, involving the word ‘puke-ulele’, but does have a very amusing take on the craze.

Lucky the uke brigade are a thick-skinned bunch and can take the jibes. Best of luck with your festival and we’ll be listening intently. From a distance.

Controversy rages down the cobbled streets of the Historic Village, as a Men’s Shed trustee claims the venture loses money.

Submissions from the Men’s Shed Trust have succeeded in opening discussion on aspects of Historic Village finances that trustee Des Ferrow says give a false picture of the village.

Mayor Stuart Crosby rebutes the claim, saying the village has an independent audited surplus of $58,000 for the 2010/11 financial year.

He claims the figures for the current financial year show the village is tracking to break even despite constraints on leasing buildings due to the uncertainty of the strategic direction for the village as a whole.

Stuart made his statement on Thursday after Des’ submissions were reported on SunLive, leading to a flurry of reader comments.

Des says the city council, which owns most of the land and many of the buildings, does not pay any rates, the tenants do. The villages are also charged for water use, but not the council.

Apart from not meeting its own costs, the council also uses quarterly reporting on finances.

Des called for the council to institute monthly reporting, money in money out, which will give a much more accurate picture. “It’s not within a bull’s roar of breaking even,” says Des. The city council doesn’t even know what it owns at the village as there is no inventory, says Des. Several other submitters recognised the village is run down as a result Tauranga City Council’s ongoing neglect of both buildings and grounds.

One submitter said their building had not been painted for six years.

Another said they had installed their own heat pump because the building was ‘unliveable’ otherwise.

While the general consensus among other submitters is for a cash injection from the council, Des says the Men’s Shed and a change of village management can collectively save the council at least $100,000.

The only staff required would be a village manager with computer skills who can also mow lawns, paint buildings, saw wood, hammer nails and organise, backed up by a competent office accounts person.

The Men’s Shed will provide volunteer labour for repairs and maintenance in lieu of rent, says Des. Assets owned by the Historic Village have been recorded in an asset register since 2007, says Mayor Crosby.

Tauranga athlete aiming for London Thousands of hopeful athletes dream of qualifying for this year’s London Olympics, but 19 year-old Joseph Millar is trying his best not to think about it.

The Tauranga man is getting ready to compete in this year’s Australian Open Championship in the 100m and 200m sprints this weekend.

If he can run the 100m in 10.02 seconds or less he will be on the fast track to London, but the relaxed athlete is looking at qualifying as a bonus and concentrating on just giving the race his best.

Joseph is hoping to beat his previous 100m record of 10.36 seconds which he ran in the New Zealand Nationals.

Joseph says his toughest competition will be some of the Australian competitors, but his chances are better due to some of their best runners being currently injured.

Leading up the championship Joseph has been doing intense training sessions every second day for up to three hours.

“I do really hard sprints then let the tank re-fill.”

The athlete has a strong support system at home. He says his family has been truly supportive, especially throughout his back injury last year.

“I had two fractures in my lower spine.”

Unsure of whether the injury was a direct result of his running, Joseph was in agony, experiencing days when just lying on the floor was excruciating.

“It got to the point where I couldn’t even medal in my events last year,” he says.

“Now on a good day I don’t notice it and on a bad day I notice it a little.”

Joseph will run the 100m on Saturday and the 200m on Sunday.

“I’ll just do by best and see what happens,” he says.

Huffing and puffing does the heart good

Promoting cardiac health is a cause close to Diane Mannington’s heart.

After her father had open heart surgery, and her mother dealt with heart issues of her own, Diane became involved with The Heart Foundation, pitching in to spread the word among our community.

She has now volunteered for the organisation for more than 13 years, a coordinates a series of fun, low-impact fitness classes for over 50s around the city every week.

She says it’s her way of helping older people improve their heart health, or prevent heart issues. She also leads by example, as a competitive walker taking part in this weekend’s Tauranga Half Marathon.

She’s no stranger to the course either; she has completed the event every year since its incep-

tion seven years ago, when it was originally branded at the Tauranga Half for Heart.

The course is suitable for all abilities, and entrants can chose to walk or run the half marathon, the quarter marathon, or the 5km race.

Participants can also opt in to become a Heart Racer, and raise funds for The Heart Foundation in the process, helping them fight against cardiac disease, through funding research, cardiac rehabilitation and promoting a healthy lifestyle throughout the community.

With heart disease New Zealand’s leading cause of death; it’s a health concern that affects many Kiwis, and The Heart Foundation’s work can help us all stay heart healthy.

New mural unveiled in city centre Owen Dippie adds the finishing touches on his artwork earlier this week.

World-renowned street artist Owen Dippie has finished his latest masterpiece; a towering homage to C.F. Goldie in Masonic Park.

The work, captured in spray paint, is based on ‘Ina Te Papatahi, Nga Puhi’, which was originally painted in 1902.

Owen says this particular piece was a passion project and he obtained the space, on the back of Broncos Sports Store overlook-

ing the car park, in collaboration with Creative Tauranga and the Tauranga City Council.

With unpredictable weather over the past few weeks to contend with, Owen said it was worth taking the time to do well.

“It was really important to me to get it right, as it’s such an important piece of New Zealand art.”

Owen says he’s a massive Goldie fan, and he’s been looking to create a Goldie-inspired piece for a couple of years. He hopes this work will lead the way for others.

“There needs to be more art like

this around town, and hopefully with this one in the central city it will snowball from here.”

Owen is also responsible for a number of recognisable artworks around the city, including ‘Two Kings of Rock n’ Roll’, featuring Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley on Fifteenth Ave, and his portrait of Sir Edmund Hilary that can be spotted on Maunganui Road.

Treated with graffiti proofing and safe from direct sunlight, Owen hopes his latest mural will also be around for a long time.

Big Brother is watching you In George Orwell’s dystopian science-fiction novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, telescreens watched people move in public and private places.

Society, ruled by the oligarchical dictatorship of the Party, seemed locked in perpetual war and subjected to explicit mind control and the cult of personality of Big Brother.

Parts of that fiction now rings true.

Today’s police have snitches in place of Orwell’s ‘thought police’.

‘Newspeak’ has been supplanted by texting and television, and the public is complicit, in a world filled with fear and thugs and terrorism, of surrendering their collective dignity to the point they are willing to be watched.

The Tauranga public, in certain places, has been under surveillance since 1996.

Nutech Security Ltd’s Richard Eaton, whose role entails looking after the surveillance network owned by the Tauranga City Council (TCC), says traffic cameras were added in 2007. All up, he says there are 73 council-owned cameras operating city-wide – 10 in the Mount, 26 in the Tauranga CBD, eight in the Cherrywood Shopping Centre and 29 traffic cameras – but added there are also “numerous’’ cameras operating in city facilities such as water services, libraries, halls and wharves.

First Security is contracted to monitor the crime prevention cameras daily, he says.

“Crime prevention cameras are monitored from 8pm to 4am by one person at the TCC Camera room.

“Traffic cameras are viewed during the day by the city transportation team for accident spotting, traffic flow, traffic light signal operation and general traffic issues.

“Information can only be used for the purposes it was collected for unless otherwise allowed for under the Privacy

Act – for example if police have access to footage in the investigation of a crime.’’

New transportation cameras, common in New Zealand town and cities, are to be installed this year, while representatives of Katikati and Te Puke are currently investigating CCTV systems, he says.

TCC’s manager of environmental compliance John Payne described the arrangement between council, the private security firm and the police as

a “really good and successful partnership’’.

This year has already yielded 1176 requests for footage by the police, relating to offences ranging from assaults and breach of the liquor ban to stolen vehicles and graffiti.

Managing director of Nutech Keith Mangan would not divulge how many other private businesses dealt with the security company, but noted the service is becoming more popular.

Stir up at the city pools An immediate overhaul of the city’s pools and their management is to be undertaken

by Tauranga City Aquatics directors who are to report back to TCAL’s owners, the Tauranga City Council.

The decision was made at Tuesday’s extraordinary council meeting, held in confidential.

The process will involve the TCAL Board researching and analysing three options for delivery of the pool services: Using the existing management structure, contracting out the delivery, or bringing the pools network back under the Council structure.

The TCAL Board will report back on each of the options to the July Council meeting, with the implementation of the recommended option expected to begin in August.

The pools review is complimentary to the council’s current review of all its Council Controlled Organisations, says Mayor Stuart Crosby.

“There is clearly some issues around the delivery of our aquatic services and we want to improve the situation,” says Stuart.

“I guess examples have been the hot pools redevelopment, some issues around the Otumoetai pool.

So basically we have identified that there are some probably long standing issues since the Australian company failed.”

TCAL took over operation of the five city pools in June 2009 from Australian owned LeisureCo Tauranga.

LeisureCo went into liquidation owning nearly $400,000 to the pools network’s 129 regular trade creditors.

Changes at the pools have been called for since previous TCAL directors persisted in a $9 million redevelopment plan at the Mount Hot Pools against growing public opposition. The plan failed to obtain resource consent and the council decided against paying the CCO to take the argument to the Environment Court.

The decision resulted in the resignation of former board chairman Warren Banks and Mike King. The council appointed director on the board David Stewart resigned in May 2011.

He was reappointed in February, along with councillors Wayne Moultrie and Larry Baldock. Tauranga CEO Ken Paterson is also a TCAL director. The two remaining independent TCAL directors are Shirley Baker and James Rolleston.

“We’ve got 150 full time and part time staff doing a great job keeping the aquatic system going, but clearly there have been issues and we want to address those issues and move forward in a more positive way and rebuilt relationships with all the users, be it the swim clubs, the private coaching and the general public who use the facilities,” says Stuart.

Tracing Bethlehem’s royal Monarchs After helping raise Monarch Butterflies a group of Bethlehem Primary School pupils want your help for a research project to learn how far they travel.

The butterflies, which are released with a tag a day after hatching in the school’s butterfly house, are being monitored as part of research that aims to stop the decline in butterflies around urban areas that has hit other countries.

School project volunteer helper Elizabeth Attwood is encouraging people to look out for tagged butterflies and report them so that they can trace how far they have gone to find winter shelter.

“Butterflies are very susceptible to sprays and with areas being cleared for housing so there is not as much suitable area for them.”

Elizabeth says there have been reports of Monarch Butterflies flying up to 100km in other places, but says most of the school’s butterflies stayed around

the Tauranga area.

She encourages anyone who saw a tagged butterfly to report the tags code, saying despite releasing the first butterflies more than a month ago none had been reported yet.

The project, organised by the Monarch Butterfly Trust, aims to trace how far the butterflies are travelling and where they are going – with the thought of setting up butterfly havens.

Library petition to turn a new page A petition has hit the Greerton streets in a campaign calling for a major expansion of the suburb’s library, 20 years after it was first proposed.

Petition organiser Gary Cannon has joined forces with Greerton Village Mainstreet to drum up community support for a 450 sqm expansion of the library ($1.3 m cost), ahead of the council’s preference for a 200 sqm addition ($650,000). Gary is urging people to sign the petition and make submissions on the council’s 10-year plan, saying the smaller option would be outgrown within five years.

“Tauranga South is under-resourced as it is and with further growth it is simply going to be too small for the area.’’

Gary welcomes the support of Mainstreet, but suspects the council has already made up its mind with the smaller option.

“Support from the public is good especially now that we have a reduced size (of the cost) from original extension plan (proposed in 1992 for $6m).”

Mainstreet board chairman Ray Dean says it is essential for Greerton to get the larger expansion to double the floor size.

Ray accepts the council has limited funds, but believes the best solution is for it to sell the Subway block of property it owns in Greerton Rd to cover the larger expansion costs.

But Gary doubts a sale will raise enough for the larger expansion and says talk about a private-public partnership to fund the expansion is a red herring.

“Nobody in their right mind is going to do a private partnership with the council, all they are doing is trying to put this in front of people so they can delay the project – it won’t happen. Not in this economy.”

Exhibition rises as Rena sinks Twelve months on from a disappointing cancellation, the Mount Art Group will exhibit its paintings at the Mount Maunganui Surf Club from today, Friday.

Break gravity’s hold

A year ago, the crashing of the cargo ship Rena on the Astrolabe Reef put pay to the group’s annual exhibition, as Maritime New Zealand took over the surf club’s

facilities. About 20 members of the group, which meets weekly, will be exhibiting their work, and members of the public will be encouraged to participate in producing individual and shared paintings.

The event will also feature a painting demonstration from a member of the group.

Entry is free, and the event will run from 9-6pm on April 13-14 and from 9-5pm on April 15.

Briana Hair defies gravity with parkour tricks at Mount Maunganui’s new indoor free-running centre.

Part Cirque de Soleil, part Alice in Wonderland – Bay of Plenty residents are getting a chance to try their hand at the latest adventure activity of parkour with a new centre for the latest craze.

Often featuring in action-packed TV commercials where actors vault, roll, run and jump up walls and around obstacles –Mount Maunganui’s Rock House owner Sue Hair has already had a lot of interest since opening what they believe is the country’s first dedi-

cated indoor centre.

“We’ve even had people from Auckland asking about it and we’ve got school groups organised to get involved, and we haven’t even officially launched yet,” says Sue. The decision to set up their dedicated space the Manic Room was prompted by the interest of her 15-year-old daughter Briana – who has ironically been banned from doing difficult stunts by her competitive gym instructor to avoid any injuries.

“It’s no more dangerous than a lot of other activities. As long

as people don’t go beyond their capabilities, it’s all about learning the tricks then going up to more difficult levels.

“There are different levels for challenging yourself as much or as little as you want. It’s completely up to each person.”

Everyone who takes part in parkour, also known as free-running, at the centre has to sign a waiver and those aged under 10 must be supervised by an adult. An official open day is being held on Saturday.

The bosswoman was hell bent on making yet more fig chutney.

Don’t ask me how those two objectives fit together on an island paradise….

But setting sail, we were well prepared with cameras and preserving jars. Not your usual mix of boating equipment, but I’ve figured out, we live in a strange household.

I managed to finally fill the doggy buoyancy vest left by my illustrious predecessor. The boss has been trying to fit it on me for months, and every time I’ve looked like a pea in a barrel. It seemed I would never grow into the ‘large” fitting.

But at last, all those nutritional helpings of Ziwipeak have finally paid off and my training with Wendy the Dog Trainer, coaching me to take a little at a time, meant I slipped comfortably into the life jacket and happily wore it during the short voyage to Matakana.

We arrived to find some old friends on shore, with their new dog, Monty.

From the moment I jumped off the boat and gazed into his blue eye (and his blue/brown eye) I was awestruck.

A husky/border collie cross, he was clever, playful, caring and the epitomy of the new age, sensitive dog guy.

We ran and played and fetched and swam and looked swooningly into each others yellow/blue/brown-blue eyes; and rolled in the sand and ran through the pines and had a drink from the same bowl and ran some more and swam and fetched and …. Fell down on the grass exhausted. Then we ran and swam and fetched and swam some more. It was a magical end to a late summer day.

Boy, was I going to have a story to tell Ady next week!

Then, tragedy struck. My perfect summer holiday romance was cut terribly short.

One of my callers was very upset. He reported that he had been told by the Council that if he didn’t like the reply he had just received from Council that he should consider leaving town. Of course many of my callers are the disaffected, upset with their experiences of Council insensitivity.

Like all deteriorating relationships, the fault is on both sides but does the real problem start with our acceptance of an archaic master servant relationship?

Even the current seemingly democratic submission process that is underway this week uses word submission in exactly the same way that it was used and has now disappeared from modern marriage vows.

Minister of the Crown Last Tuesday I was made a Minister of the Crown with responsibilities as Associate Minister of Transport and of Climate Change and as Minister of Consumer Affairs.

A small ceremony was held in the Beehive with the Governor-General, the Prime Minister and other ministers in attendance. I was also grateful that my wife, son and family could be present for what was a very special moment in my career as your MP. I will write more about my new roles soon but in the meantime I thought I would make clear one thing that some people get confused about. Becoming a Minister doesn’t mean I have to move full time to Wellington and in fact the amount of time I spend at Parliament won’t change much from what has always been the case. My family and I will continue to live in Tauranga and I will commute back and forth to this city I call home.

Youth Mental Health package

Young people will shape the future of our communities.

So many of them are on the right track. They are learning, achieving, and have high aspirations for their future.

But some find the transition from childhood to adulthood tough going. One in five young people will experience some form of mental health problem during this crucial time.

Last week Prime Minister John Key announced a comprehensive youth mental health package. It is designed to

ensure young people with mental health problems receive better, faster, more modern help.

Our Youth Mental Health package covers four areas: • In schools • Online • In families and communities • In the health system Schools will be better equipped to identify students with mental health issues. We’re investing $18.6 million to put extra nurses, and specially trained youth workers, into low-decile secondary schools.

We want schools to take more responsibility for the wellbeing of their students. We will measure how well schools are doing when it comes to student wellbeing. Over time we expect them to show decreases in things like bullying. Other school-based initiatives in the package include the expansion of a positive behaviour programme to all secondary schools.

Young people are tech-savvy and use the internet as a second home. We need to modernise our approach if we are to reach the kids we need to help.

We will invest $2.7 million in E-therapy for young people. We’re launching a Social Media Innovations Fund to support providers of youth services to better use social media technology, including smart phone apps and Facebook-related programmes. We’ll ask for support from the private sector to boost this fund.

Parents, families, and friends have a big role to play identifying mental health issues in young people, but they need more authoritative information.

We will fund non-government organisations to get that information out to parents, families, and friends.

When a young person with a mental illness seeks

help in the health system, it’s important we deliver.

We are increasing funding for primary mental health care and ensuring that more young people benefit from that money. We will set new wait-time targets for Child and Adolescence Mental Health Services to reduce waiting times. We will also improve postdischarge follow ups.

When it comes to delivering for young people, National is interested in what works. There are many more initiatives than these in the Youth Mental Health package. The details are online at www.national.org.nz and I encourage you to check out what we’re doing.

Are you being taken to the cleaners?

Have you had a look at the proposed (draft) annual/three year/10 year plan from Bay of Plenty Regional Council (BOPRC)? Probably not?

Given it is a proposal, if it gets the big tick in June from the Regional Councillors it will not be good news for ratepayers.

Tauranga ratepayers get plenty of media scrutiny of TCC happenings.

Hardly any media scrutiny of Western Bay and almost nil for BOPRC. In fact most people are only vaguely aware of the Regional Council and what it does.

The city collects the Regional Council rate on their behalf, and gets paid around $120,000 for the service. This is a great investment by the Regional Council to help keep them below the ratepayers’ radar. I’m not going to get into much detail over this as we have enough to cope with our own annual/

thee/10 year plan. But as a teaser I think a proposed 10% - 12% BOPRC rate increase is unacceptable. As is subsidising (masking?) their true costs with profits from the shareholding in the Port Company. Then there is the matter of the bond issue they made some years ago of some $200 million which they borrowed to create an infrastructural assistance fund to help local Councils fund the likes of cleaning up the Rotorua Lakes, Tauranga roading and other initiatives.

Well, the Rotorua Lakes got some dollars as they should and a few other bits and pieces but the majority of the fund languishes, unused for the purpose of which it was borrowed. And here’s the rub. They have it invested at an increased interest rate from that which they borrowed it at and are using the difference as income in much the same way as Port Company profit.

Clean air

While on the subject of Regional Council I can, at long last, report an outcome on that light grey dusts that settles over parts of the city. I first wrote of this over three years ago. Sulphur Point and Beach Road cops it in easterly winds and Pitau Road at the Mount in sou’westers are two sample areas. The Regional Council is responsible for clean air and they commissioned an environmental scientist to research it.

There were all sorts of conspiracy theories. The outcome is that the dust is real. Colloquially called “urban dust” it is an amalgam of all

sorts of contamination from a city environment with no one contaminant standing out, we were told. It apparently accumulates on the vast asphalt area of the port company, gets stirred up by the enormous traffic in the area and gets blown over the city. And you gave up smoking for your health? What will happen to try to remedy this problem is the next step.

Business rates

At Joint Governance Committee TCC/Western Bay elected members received reports from Priority One and Tourism BOP both jointly funded by a target rates on businesses. Andrew Coker from Priority One said Sunlive was doing good business for them.

Glen Ormsby from Tourism BOP said it has been suggested a sign on the Auckland waterfront to promote Tauranga might read “Move your business to Tauranga, Auckland doesn’t give a ship.” Joint Governance discussed possible Local Government reform and focussed on issues surrounding our council’s lack of money and the Regional Council being awash with it. There’s a solution in there somewhere I detect!

As reported last week there was an Extraordinary Full Council meeting to discuss the way forward for the Swim Pools and Tauranga City Aquatics Ltd (TCAL) who run them. Options to be explored include the existing management structure, a separate structure for asset management and ownership, contracting out and being brought back in house. TCAL will make the recommendation but the final decision will be Councils.

Interesting observation I made

the other day. I was standing in line at the movies. A lady ahead with two young kiddies bought the three tickets and a box of popcorn. $40 thanks and she handed over the money without blinking. Imagine if we could get the same acceptance of who should pay, and how much, at the pools. And you can stay all day at the pools!

Making the limelight

Some time ago I mentioned that we should commemorate some of Tauranga’s characters and creators who helped make our city but who never made the limelight. One such person was Michael Hodgkins aka “Springheel Jack” and his Scottish terrier Angus. I never gave up and have discovered there is Government funding available for such art work. Yep, I’m a culture vulture after all – I have spoken to Creative Tauranga and a process is underway to have a mural painted

I hear the IRD is on to them to use it in the manner the law requires. There are plenty of infrastructure requirements that can easily soak up the $185 million or so that remain. But hey, that will mean more rates increases over and above. The justification for these proposed rates increases will no doubt revolve around “it’s not much in dollar terms” “it’s only a cup of coffee a week” and other mindless clichés that saw TCC rate revenue demand soar from $25m to over $100m in about 10 years.

As an outside observer you could be forgiven for thinking that the four Tauranga regional councillors are outnumbered by the rest of the Bay. They are! Tauranga represents a significantly greater proportion of the BOPRC rates income and receives only a fraction back in services. So unless some serious action is taken ratepayers will be taken to the cleaners in the next few years by the Regional Council.

Tauranga City will be taking a strong submission to them and it is in your interests to do the same.

Concerns raised over high suicide rates The number of young people taking their own lives is concerning psychologists, who are in discussions about the high suicide risk among young people, particularly among Pacific Island youth.

Latest figures show Pacific youth are twice as likely as the rest of the population to have depression, anxiety issues or attempt suicide.

Auckland last week. The Kawerau community in the Eastern Bay of Plenty is taking matters into its own hands by setting up a Suicide Prevention Action Plan. The Bay of Plenty chief coroner is concerned at the high number of suicides in the region, particularly those in the Kawerau District.

A town-by-town breakdown on the Bay’s figures will be released later in the year.

Maori academic conference to help shape the Bay A one-day conference involving prominent New Zealanders and Maori academics is attracting around 180 people.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council hosts the event at TECT Arena on April 23.

So far 180 people have registered for the conference and a waiting list is being compiled for further registrations.

Keynote speaker on the day will be Waitangi Tribunal Chair

and Chief Judge of the Maori Land Court, judge Justice Joe Williams.

Judge Williams will be discussing Maori into the future and the use of Maori land.

Bay of Plenty Regional Councillor Raewyn Bennett says the conference was an opportunity to provide tangata whenua with access to information that was easily available to Regional Councillors.

“Councillors and others have access to latest research and new

ideas as a matter of course. The conference will assist with levelling the playing field.

“Given the importance of tangata whenua involvement in the affairs of the Bay of Plenty, economically, socially and politically, Council has taken the opportunity of further building of positive relationships, which is the most productive way forward for the Bay.” She says any business organisation with an eye on the future knows that informed involve-

ment of tangata whenua is essential to the Bay’s future prosperity.

“For tangata whenua there is the opportunity to strengthen business relationships with each other and also to be exposed to new ideas from outside the Bay on some critical issues like water rights and responsibilities, local government, economic development.”

The conference is being aimed at Maori living in, or with an interest in the Bay of Plenty.

On March 22, the school’s first Te Ao Maori - The World of Maori Day, started with a series of workshops prepared by the staff and community members for the students of the Lower Middle School.

Throughout the campus, 320 Lower Middle School students participated in a series of fun and engaging learning experiences such as Maori tikanga, poi making, weaving and contemporary Maori art and carving.

Each workshop was run by teachers in the Lower Middle School with help from numerous parents and members of the school community.

One of the highlights of the programme was the Contemporary Maori Art Experience.

As these were projected on to walls in a darkened theatre, atmospheric music was played, and the students responded with paint on a huge canvas.

The six-week Blended Families course, designed for parents in a combined household with step-parent/step-children issues, is intended to give attendees a deeper understanding of children’s needs.

The course will include managing the complexities involved and provide structure for fostering enhanced family harmony.

Topics will include parenting styles versus a family’s established style, child grief over separation or death, behaviours children resort to, the roles of step-parent and non-custodial parent and boundaries that need to be set.

Excel Toastmasters Club, Mount Maunganui will be celebrating 20 years of success with an anniversary dinner on 25 May. Long serving member Distinguished Toastmaster Jenny Purchase estimates that more 500 people from

all walks of life and many nationalities have gained life-changing skills, either by being a member or participation in Speechcraft courses.

“Excellent communication and leadership skills are more vital now than ever before. Its great seeing how quickly new skills start to show.

It’s like anything you participate in; you only get out of it what you are prepared to put into it. Commit-

ment leads to success, says Jenny.

“It is always exciting to hear that a member has received a promotion or been offered a challenging new opportunity for work. I would have loved to have had the skills when my children were young. They make such a difference to relationships.”

Club President Yolanda Cambridge said good communication and leadership skills are critical to get ahead today. The club offers a positive, friendly environment to learn speaking, listening and thinking skills. Members help, support, and learn from one another.

Learning for life For teacher Mark Stone, nothing beats the satisfaction of seeing pupils transform and thrive with personal tutoring.

Mark gets great feedback from parents nearly every week, praising the impact he has had on children – improving their understanding, boosting their knowledge and creating a love for learning.

“It is just so rewarding hearing how it’s making a difference. I just had a parent in here yesterday who was so pleased that her son had gone up two levels, she was almost in tears.”

The former primary and secondary maths and English teacher has been running Mathzwise in Tauranga for the past five years and earlier this year set up the Tauranga Education Academy to run alongside it, offering tuition in English and sciences. Both Mathzwise and the academy offer support for pupils from Year 3 to Year 13, with both remedial and extension programmes at its CBD classrooms.

Over the school holidays they are running two day intensive courses aimed at Year 7-10 students in creative writing and ‘stream studies’ where students can learn about freshwater stream ecosystems.

“Part of what we do here is to really promote the sciences. Kids can get really excited about science depending on how it’s presented – we are hoping to help promote and develop future scientists and technologists.”

New lion cubs proving popular in paradise At just six weeks old, these gorgeous felines are drawing crowds from miles away.

The pair made their public debut over Easter, with staff holding the cubs so visitors can pat them, have their photos taken, and watch them play.

The cubs will get to interact with the public up until twelve months old, when they’ll either join the Paradise Valley Springs pride, or go to other zoos here or around the world.

Getting close to these cubs really is a unique experience – with daily patting times from 10.40am-12pm, 1-2.20pm and 3-4.30pm.

The pride currently consists of five adult lions, which can be viewed from outside their enclosure, a popular spot The two new lion cubs are Paradise at feeding time around 2.30pm Valley Spring’s biggest attraction.

The currently nameless female lion cubs (they’re taking suggestions!) are on show at Paradise Valley Springs just outside of Rotorua, and visitors can get up close and personal with them like

every day. There are also two eight month old cubs on the property, and visitors can sometimes reach through their enclosure to pat them as well.

Paradise Springs Valley is a must-see destination for tourists and locals alike, with New Zealand trout, birds, a tree canopy walk, and a number of different animals on show that are usually found in the wild. The park is very interactive, with the ability for visitors to feed the trout and birds, as well as farm animals which also reside on the property.

Paradise Valley Springs operates every day, regardless of the holidays, and there is no extra charge to visit the lion park or pat the lion cubs.

Digging up art treasures Time is fast-running out to support the Tauranga Sunrise Rotary Club’s annual charity art fundraiser.

The Treasured Art exhibition organiser Sally Morrison wants to hear from anyone with quality works by well-known professional artists for the club’s fundraiser’s art sale and exhibition – including pieces from the feature artist Peter Wallers.

“We’ve had a positive response with one collector putting in five of his lovely works to the auction. We also have professional artists and collectors who are coming back to support us for the third year running,” says Sally.

Proceeds from the May sale will go to Tauranga youth development programme Kiwi Can which provides a life skills and values programme for five to 12-year-olds at primary and intermediate schools. The organisers

have committed to raise $20,000 for the charity, the sum donated from each of the past two auctions.

Sally says the programme does a great job in developing children’s self- esteem and instilling “good oldfashioned values”.

“It’s lovely to see the kids confidence grow and feeling good about being good, doing their best and using their manners. You can tell by their attitude when they come into the class that they love it.”

Sally wants to hear from people with works to sell or display by April 20, and encourages anyone with quality art that is shifting homes to review their collection for works to sell.

Proceeds from all sales will be split 50:50 between owners and the club, or people may choose to donate all. The sale will be held at Ingham Sears Mercedes Benz in Mount Maunganui on May 24. For more details go to www.treasuredart.co.nz

A life of theatre honoured Dedicating her life to the theatre since her youth, Dianne Leach has been honoured as the newest life member of Te Puke Repertory Society in recognition of her 30 years of service.

Dianne is now one of only six honorary memberships awarded since 1952; Jess Fenwick QSM, Doddy Snodgrass, Maggie Copeland-Smith III (all deceased) and present life members Colin Cooper and Michael Jones.

Dianne’s interest in theatre started as a young girl when her mother took her to Te Puke’s production of

She joined the Repertory Society in the early 1980s and has been an extraordinary passionate contributor since then. Working on the committee, directing pantomimes such as Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood, working backstage and has also been a memorable performer.

According to the press, she was an unforgettable Fatima in Alibaba.

Other fine performances were in Share Club, Steel Magnolias and It’s My Party.

Dianne has dedicated much time to children’s theatre and established Stars on Stage, a programme for children. She has organised Festivals

of Community Theatre. Fellow life member Michael Jones says she is a tireless promoter, a very positive influence to other members and an innovative initiator of new programmes. Michael says Dianne’s contribution has been outstanding and her untiring commitment has made a major impact to the club and to its continued success.

The bees are busy collecting pollen before the winter.

One bee dances in the hive to show the way to find the sweet flowers. The directions are complicated and Glib has trouble understanding where to go. He buzzes after the other bees and grumbles when he can’t keep up with them. When he finally catches up, the bees laugh at him and there’s only a little pollen left for him to gather.

One day Glib smells a pollenicious scent. He flies off in search of the source and finds himself amongst tall, city buildings. The delicious smell leads him on until he sees a hillside covered with flowers. He returns to the hive laden with pollen. Glib knows he should tell the other bees about the garden, but he’s too shy to dance the directions in case they laugh at him. So he keeps the sheltered hillside a secret.

Soon the frosts come and the bees can’t find enough pollen to feed the hive. The bees become too weak to fly, except Glib. Does he have the strength and courage to save the hive?

Colourful illustrations by Ingrid Berzins highlight the vivid flowers and busy bees. Close-up detail inside the hive gives a fascinating glimpse of bees going about their work. The artist’s brushwork adds texture to the plump bees and movement to swaying grasses and windswept trees. Joint Health (Part 1) Joints are any part of the body where two or more bones meet. The main types of joints are the fibrous joints such as tooth sockets, those solely of cartilage such as vertebrae discs, and thirdly the mobile synovial joints such as knees and shoulders.

The most common problems that affect joints are accidental damage to mobile joints, all forms of arthritis and specific problems with joint structures such as bursitis and tendonitis.

Our knees and shoulders are incredibly complex synovial joints. Have a look at an anatomical image of a shoulder joint and you will see what I mean.

There are tendons attached to bones, tendon sheaths to allow tendon movement, joint cavities with synovial fluid, little bags of lubricant called bursars and, of course, the cartilage covering the bones. All of these structures can cause problems including arthritis, bursitis and tendonitis.

Osteoarthritis is the progressive loss of the cartilage that covers the ends of bones. The pain is as much caused by inflammation as the actual loss of cartilage.

While there is obviously some wear and tear aspect to the disease the latest research suggests this is a true disease process rather than just accumulated wear.

Research in the last decade by K. Yudoh et al (2005) and C. Ziskoven et al (2010) indicates the real cause may oxidative stress, which then triggers inflammation. The research concludes that free radicals damage the chondrocyte cells that make and support cartilage.

When these cells are damaged and die it results in the erosion of cartilage. In other words, osteoarthritis is much more like iron rusting away in the salt air.

My approach to osteoarthritis is now based on this latest research and my own observations over many years. I take a “3 legged stool� approach.

Firstly, we add a range of antioxidants to combat the free radicals attacking joint cells.

Secondly, we add a range of anti-inflammatory compounds including Omega 3 and a number of plant based anti-inflammatory compounds.

Thirdly, we add specific amounts of joint supporting compounds such as Glucosamine and MSM. It is very important to get personalised and monitored advice because different joints respond to different doses of different compounds and, of course, everyone is different.

Are you getting your dose of Vitamin D? With so much advertising hype around antioxidant and the “wonder” vitamins that support health and “give energy”, vitamin D gets little press. But it packs a powerful punch when it comes to our health, and the lack of it has serious implications.

Firstly, we need vitamin D to help our bones to absorb calcium. Without sufficient calcium absorption our bones become brittle and vulnerable to fractures (osteoporosis). This is not just a problem for the elderly; young people are at risk from rickets if they have insufficient calcium absorption.

Research has found that lack of vitamin D is linked to depression, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and multiple sclerosis. It plays important roles in modulating cell growth, immune functions, and reducing inflammation.

Low levels of vitamin D also lead to muscle weakness and muscle loss, in particular the fast twitch muscle fibres which are the ones we need for fast movement.

As we age this can lead to unsteadiness and falls.

Obtaining enough to satisfy our body’s needs can be difficult. There are two methods of attaining vitamin D, either

we manufacture it or we consume it. But both have difficulties.

Our bodies make vitamin D when our skin is exposed to sun light (it is the ultraviolet light that triggers the action).

Some people have more difficulty obtaining their vitamin D this way such as those with darker skin who need more exposure due to resistance of their skin pigmentation, and those who have a denser fat layer under the skin have a reduced ability to release sun-induced vitamin D. Keeping this in mind, and the risks of skin cancer, this may not always be the best way of obtaining your daily requirement.

We then have to resort to food to provide our needs. Unfortunately few foods in nature contain vitamin D, so fortified foods, of which the best sources are low fat dairy, soy milk and cereals, start becoming an option we need to consider.

Whichever method you chose to get your vitamin D, an increase in consumption will result in an increase in health; just remember not to overdo it.

“But I think in this economy people are so strapped they can’t afford those trimmings. Now they want the one with the cheapest price. They don’t care if it’s 80,000kms as opposed to 40,000.

“I think PSA, Rena, is all contributing to a hard year ahead. I think we are starting to see retailers fall by the wayside that have just been hanging on, and have decided to get out while they can.

I think there’s a lot yet to come in all forms of retailing in town.”

Fourteen locals are taking part in the Blokes Sheds Ramble to help raise funds for the Katikati Skateboarding Club, which needs $50,000 for the long overdue upgrade of the Katikati Skate Park.

Among those who will open their shed doors are Noel Hilford, who has 12 fully restored Allis-Chalmers tractors, and Michael Cooper, whose massive 1958 D9 Caterpillar is among five bulldozers of varying makes and models on display in his very tidy and orderly shed.

John Brown’s collection of vintage engines includes an engine from 1902 and more modern engines from the 1950s. Allan & Katrina Smithy’s business at Katikati A1 Quick Lubes is the perfect place for a restoration enthusiast to potter away.

Allan’s current project is a 38 Chev Coupe, while Katrina is working on an early 60s caravan and even a kid’s trike.

Rene Ruf started his restoration bug in retirement and his projects include a Greenslade motor from the early 1920s and a number of Lister engines from England.

Kiwi dream realised for local family For many New Zealanders, owning their slice of our paradise is just a dream.

With housing deemed ‘severely unaffordable’ in a 2011 study by Demographia International, our median house prices are 6.4 times median incomes, and that’s double the figure it was 20 years ago.

But local woman Ivy Prentis hadn’t quite let go of the dream. She felt she had been wasting her money for years as a renter without making any progress towards her ultimate goal, and decided to take action; to secure the home she had hoped for, for herself, and for her family.

Ivy contacted not-for-profit organisation Habitat for Humanity Tauranga to ask for help.

“It seemed like Habitat for Humanity would finally be the way we could have our own home.”

Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with families in housing need to eliminate sub-standard housing by building, renovating and selling simple, decent houses on an affordable basis. Locally, they have helped 49 families get into their own homes.

Ivy says they were one of the lucky ones; after a year on the waiting list, they were picked for the shortlist, and eventually chosen for a partnership with the organisation.

“It was amazing when they told us. I just felt so relieved.”

Ivy says that will now rent the home from Habitat for five years, and after that, the net money they’ve paid will be taken off the cost of the home, making it easier to raise finance for the purchase of the home.

“It’s life-changing owning our own home. It’s one of those big milestones in life, and the fact that we had help has been awesome. We couldn’t have done it any other way in our circumstances.”

Ivy now volunteers for the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, giving back to the organisation which helped her realise her dream. The store sells and accepts second-hand goods, and is located at 52 2nd Ave.

Ivy and David Prentis have now been in their home for almost two years with their children Destiny, Gabrielle and Joshua.

The Mars Rover Curiosity, which was

discussed last month, continues its journey to an August touchdown.

In the meantime, one of two earlier Rovers which touched down for a scheduled three month mission over seven years ago is still operating and sending back invaluable information on Mars to the delight of the designers and operating staff of Rover Opportunity at NASA. The TAS Observatory is located at the Fergusson Park clubrooms in Matua.

Must have relevant interest in the land or the building, resides or intends to reside within the home of which RBW is taking place.

Carries out the RBW themselves or with the assistance of unpaid friends or family, paid services of an LBP cannot be entered into.

Under the owner-builder exemption, the ownerbuilder must not have carried out restricted building work in relation to a different household unit within the previous three years.

A prescribed declaration will need to be signed upon consent application which will be held on the property file.

When the new risked based consenting has been passed into law the owner/builder will not be entitled to utilise this streamlined consenting process; instead the current process of balances, checks and inspections will apply. Pumpkin harvest time has begun has always been a firm favourite, you can accompany with a fresh relish or try it with my favourite cranberry and cumin sauce.

Pumpkin and lentil wontons

Makes 20-30 wontons Wonton pastry wrappers 1 cup puy lentils 3 cups of chopped peeled pumpkin ½ large or 1 small red onion chopped finely chopped parsley ¼ cup 1 tablespoon cumin powder ½ cup chopped walnuts Salt and pepper Method Put pumpkin and lentils in a pot and just cover with water cook for around twenty minutes till the pumpkin is soft enough to mash. The Puy lentils don’t require much soaking so they should be soft enough to incorporate into the mash.

Drain very well then dry out in a warm oven if mixture is too wet, by spreading out on baking tray. Season with salt and

pepper and add chopped walnuts, onion, ground cumin and chopped parsley.

Unwrap the thawed wonton wrappers and place a small amount of mixture in the wrap and fold into a wonton-like shape. Seal the bundles with a little water and place in a tray in the freezer.

When required place in hot oil straight from the freezer and cook until golden brown. Serve with cranberry sauce with a splash of orange juice and a pinch of cumin. Yum yum.

It seems as if every year without fail, pumpkins flourish in the garden, having sprung up from discarded seed from the previous season.

This autumn they hang from the chicken fence breaking parts of it with their weight, as all the leaves have withered reminding me that it’s harvest time.

in New Zealand fruit since its arrival in 1920. High in free radical fighting antioxidants, feijoas are a rich source of vitamin C and high in minerals and fibre. Handy tip: feijoas can be frozen whole or simply scoop out the pulpand freeze.

Nashi Pears - Resembling apples more than pears, nashis are crisp with a sweet, juicy, mild flavour. The firm grainy flesh holds its shape, so are perfect for pies and flans.

Kumara - Kumara not only tastes great but they are good for us. Packed with vitamins C and E, they are also a good source of fibre and potassium.

Leeks - Delicate in flavour and sweet in taste, leeks have much less pungency than their distant relatives, garlic and onions. Leeks contain many noteworthy flavonoid anti-oxidants, minerals and vitamins that have proven health benefits. Wrap in a paper towel and store in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Work and Income ‘puzzling’ While the Government is reviewing the public service, perhaps they should also reassess the calibre of the senior staff at Work and Income.

What the head of Work and Income, Janet Crossman said last week about illegal immigrant Mr Salam Al-Bawi is rather puzzling.

Al-Bawi who has been stripped of his citizenship and banned from New Zealand, Work and Income continued to pay him $360 weekly sickness benefit while he was not living in New Zealand.

Ms Crossman said “the overpayment would be pursued should Al-Bawi return to New Zealand”. A rather ridiculous comment from Ms Crossman, as Mr Al-Bawi is forbidden from entering our country, therefore the

probability of him ever returning here must be very remote, and Work and Income prospects of pursuing for the overpayment must be near impossible.

In the most unlikely event of him ever retuning, the chances of Work and Income knowing that he’s back in the country don’t look great, when they didn’t even know that he had left the country in the first place and continued to pay his sickness benefit.

Man with vision and responsibility

Ten years ago when I took on the task of being an inaugural board member of Tourism BOP I tried banging the drum to support telling our own stories and visitors would come and listen - if the stories were told on site in an inspiring and edu-taining manner.

One of the corner stones of this storytelling tourism was the Historic Village, as it had the potential to becoming an iconic attraction, if managed with the correct balance of vision and fiscal responsibility.

Then I met the person who I believe then and still do today, had bucket loads of both to breathe life back into the village, and I could almost smell the diesel from the hundreds of buses pulling up to experience The Village. That person was and still is Des

Ferrow, who not only walked his talk but had a success track record second to none in this town.

However council and their tourism board in their infinite wisdom decided they knew better, and it was indeed a sad day when Des walked and took his talk and his talent with him.

Now today 10 years and $10million later, Tourism BOP has done four fifths to breathe life into any new attractions here in Tauranga and they should all be replaced by a new team who have the same balance of vision and fiscal responsibility as Des Ferrow.

That’s if we want Tauranga to start telling its own stories that I know overseas visitors want to hear and experience.

Genuine refugees?

So now we have another group of refugees heading our way. One has to ask are they genuine refugees?

Seems to me they are a group of law breakers in their own land and political activists not matter what they claim. If refugees are people who break the laws of their own land what is to say they won’t do the same here. Why should NZ have to accept activists who are not real refugees? We have enough activists of our own without importing others.

Britain and Australia are great examples of allowing activists into their country who don’t want to live by the laws imposed in Australia and Britain. Do we want to end up in the same position I think not? I am not against real refugees fleeing war torn countries I just wonder why include political activists and law breakers into the mix.

Beach extortion

When National passed the Marine & Coastal Area Act in March last year, they guaranteed free access for all New Zealanders to the facilities that nature has bestowed upon this country and which we all enjoy . How then, can a group calling themselves Ngati Kura Inc turn up at Matauri Bay and clamp four cars belonging to students who were there for a surfing lesson? The group, armed with a portable Eftpos machine, demanded $800 from John Smith, the principal of Kamo Intermediate School and only unclamped the students’ cars after he had paid up!

This is nothing short of extortion and I challenge the National Party to give a logical explanation and a refund!

Despite the assurances of free public access for all New Zealanders, an Official Information Act request reveals iwi and whanau are seeking title over areas of foreshore and seabed all the way from the far North to Stewart Island. The claims are from three separate iwi relating to the lower half of Ninety Mile Beach and the coast from Ahipara to Hokianga Harbour, Kennedy Bay and the Mohaka River mouth.

Maori are claiming under what they allude to as “customary title”. There are no such words in the Treaty of 1840 and the term was dreamt up by the Maori Party. In the future when visiting these idyllic spots, are we going to be met with belligerent Maori armed with portable Eftpos machines?

Library bus cutback I agree with H.McKay with regard to the Council decision to stop the Library Bus service. When one looks at some of the other costs which appear to be blithely accepted by our elected members, $250,000 is not a great cost. Why do we not keep it for another year and see if costs can be controlled enough somewhere else to pay for it? It is a most worthwhile service and I would think much appreciated by its users particularly the children and older people.

At least one councillor is trying to stop the flow of our money, well done Murray Guy. In the article on page three of the 5/4/12 Weekend Sun, he points out the costs incurred through the RMA with regard to the repairs to the Papamoa sewage outfall.

I find it hard to believe that from the 450 plus Council staff who live off our rates, that they can not find an engineer with some suitable qualification capable of designing this work. This begs the question how often do they use consultants instead of council staff. If we do not have suitable staff maybe the removal a few others could happen and qualified people employed in their place.

Faulkner’s Corner (same paper) also notes under the paragraph ‘’Maintenance” that ratepayer funding goes to Priority One, Tourism BOP etc. The only two deserving organisations would have to be the Budget Advisory Service and the Foodbank. There will be many more of us ratepayers using their services soon if this crazy spending is not stopped.

Another way to save dollars could be to stop building those awful traffic islands and round-abouts. Why on earth do we need two round-abouts in Merrivale?

The road has become a hazard as people negotiate these concrete monstrosities. I suppose this work keeps some-one employed in council.

The Weekend Sun Dolphin pod of 200 entertains

A pod of up to 200 dolphins was spotted in the Tauranga Harbour and surrounding waters on Tuesday. The pod of common dolphins was first reported to be around the harbour entrance at about 9.30am, and were later located by Butler’s Swim with Dolphins skipper Graeme Butler about four miles from Mayor Island around 2.30pm.

Graeme says the dolphins are strong and healthy and included a number of calves.

“We have hardly moved and they have just gathered around us.

“It’s awesome.”

Driver killed in Kaimai truck crash A truck which crashed down a bank on State Highway 29 over the Kaimai Ranges on Wednesday night led to delays yesterday as the wreck was removed.

The truck driver was killed when the truck he was driving plunged down a bank near the summit of the Kaimai Ranges just before 6.30pm on Wednesday night.

A recovery operation was carried out yesterday morning.

Summer cruise ship season ends

The last cruise ship for the 2011 – 2012 summer season is docked in the Port of Tauranga today marking an end to the biggest cruise ship season on record.

This season a total of 82 ships visited the Tauranga Port bringing in more than $200million to the national economy.

Tourism Bay of Plenty’s cruise manager Tania Lindsey says welcoming cruise ships to Tauranga is about more than the revenue they generate.

“It’s about showcasing what makes Tauranga special.

“The passion the local community has for cruise visits is reflected by families watching the ships sail out of port, crowds at the port gates trying to catch a glimpse of these magnificent vessels, and locals chatting to passengers and sharing stories on the street.”

This year 170,000 passengers have walked off cruise ships on to Tauranga grounds.

Police car involved in tanker crash

Police have confirmed an unmarked police vehicle was involved in a collision with a Fonterra milk tanker on State Highway 29 in the Kaimai Ranges on Sunday.

The Fonterra tanker is believed to have been travelling towards Tauranga when it and the unmarked Holden police car collided on the highway near its intersection of Thorn Road on April 8.

Pregnant driver three times the limit

A three month pregnant woman blew almost three times the legal limit when she was breath tested by Tauranga Police during the Easter break.

The 22-year-old woman was one of 16 drink drivers caught during the Easter weekend, in which more than 4000 motorists were breath tested in the Western Bay of Plenty.

The woman blew 1143 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath – the legal limit is 400 micrograms per litre of breath.

Acting police traffic senior sergeant Mike Owen says one drink driver was caught twice and 11 road side drug screening tests were also administered, which three drivers failed.

Western Bay of Plenty Police impounded 21 cars in the weekend and issued a total of 203 speeding tickets.

Mike says overall driver behaviour on Western Bay of Plenty roads was responsible for the six days from Thursday, April 5 to today.

“What the guys are saying is behaviour was generally pretty good. People were taking a fair bit of responsibility and driving responsibly.”

More than a small guitar I’ve talked before in this column about the wonders of the ukulele and got myself into trouble for it.

Fair enough. I have been known from time to time to be less than tolerant of the instrument that is known politely by socialists among us as the “People’s Guitar” (now that roughly thirty seven million of them have been given to schools for the betterment of today’s youth).

As someone whose partner has been seduced away from him by the lure of a ukulele group – didn’t people just have key parties in the old days? – I’ve been thinking that a support service needs to be set up urgently for Ukulele Widows, the poor sufferers left out in the cold as their loved ones hunch over fourstringed surrogates and strum their way through another cheerful ditty.

Everything sounds cheerful on the ukulele; it is not an instrument made for sad songs. The rationale behind giving thirty seven million ukuleles to school kids is that “at least they’re not recorders”. Fair enough too.

You can’t do a lot with a recorder (at least not a lot musical – they’re still quite good for throwing into trees to dislodge stubborn avocados). No one writes songs on recorders. But no one writes sad songs on ukuleles. Ukuleles only do cheerful. They are like musical Valium. In 20 years time we will have become a nation as irrationally cheerful as an early John Key press conference. Every song will sound like that annoyingly chirpy TV jingle advertising holidays in Fiji. Lucky you. Lucky lucky me.

(Gratuitous joke: what’s the difference between a guitar and a ukulele?

A guitar takes longer to break if you repeatedly stamp on it.)

But, as I linger in lonely solitude at the Watusi Country Club, awaiting my partner’s return from her latest ukulele dalliance, I can only observe that things are getting worse.

Next weekend in Katikati a whole pile of misguided (but doubtless very cheerful) folk have gone as far as organising a three day festival devoted entirely to the four-stringed menace.

In fact this is the second one, as last year’s event was reportedly a roaring success. (That just sounds wrong.

Ukuleles can’t roar. They can make a lot of noises – the crackling sound they give off on a small bonfire being a favourite of mine – but roaring is not one of them.)

So, anyway, apparently last year thousands of people turned up, ukuleles in hand, so this year a full three days are being put towards celebrating all things ukulele. Friday, Saturday and Sunday (20, 21, and 22 April) to be specific.

This year’s festival is being planned by the local Katikati group Ukes-APlenty. There are jam sessions, busking sessions, workshops, blackboard concerts, children’s concerts, and even a proper concert that costs $5 on Saturday night (children free) featuring the Tangaroa Trio, the Turkish Delights Dancers and Band, and Kevin Fogarty and the Ukulele All Starz Band. The Tangaroa Trio are from the Cook Islands (though resident in Auckland), giving the festival a true international presence while Kevin - I have on good authority - is known as “Mr Ukulele”.

I think you can get counselling for that.

Busking is actively encouraged throughout the town for the weekend (as long as you’re playing a ukulele) and the Sunday wraps things up with a special musical morning tea - hosted

by Ukes-A-Plenty of course - at the Athenree Homestead. There’s a $10 charge for that but it does include an Athenree Cream Tea and a tour of

the homestead (and plenty of ukulele music no doubt).

Last year it seems that people from all over the North Island turned up and even visitors from as far away as Canada and Japan (though quite possibly they just had car trouble when passing trough town and happened to have a ukulele on the back seat). The organisers this year thus warn that there may not be enough accommodation in Katikati and advise trying Waihi, Waihi Beach or Athenree. This suggestion has, for me, certain merits.

Even if strummed at maximum volume in a group of a dozen or so, I can’t imagine that ukulele music played in Katikati would be audible in Waihi.

PROJECT NIM Dir: James Marsh. Starring: Nim, and a whole bunch of ignorant scientists Project Nim is a wonderful, heartbreaking documentary. It’s central character is a chimpanzee, Nim, who became something of a celebrity in the ‘70s as the centre of an experiment to see if an ape could learn to communicate with human language. To that end he was brought up without contact with other apes, in, basically, human society.

That may have been what the outside world saw but this film delves into what really happened. This was, after all, the ‘70s, a time of consciousness-raising and self-awareness and self-important researchers who thought they

He leaps straight back into shooting up and stealing drugs. But, before you know it, Sam’s got himself baptised and is a changed man, cleaning up his life and moving from the trailer park into a nice house. Then – inspired by a church speaker – he’s off to Africa where he ends up running an orphanage in a war zone. It’s a story that seems too good to be true, but the kicker is that it is. True that is. It a tough film buoyed by its African locations and topical subject matter: the villain here is the same Joseph Kony currently in the news again.

Putting a supporting character front and centre for their own movie is a risky endeavour, especially from a franchise that went on for about two films too many, but Puss in Boots manages the job admirably. In fact the Antonio Banderas-voiced feline is a lot more fun than anything that has happened in the recent Shrek movies and the fast paced story and – as expected – fantastic animation return to the original Shrek approach of extracting the Michael from nursery rhyme characters (as opposed to the random pop culture

ruled the world. Poor Nim was shuffled between environments, had his carers changed with the same regularity that the chief “scientist” would discard his research students (after having affairs with them) and was eventually abandoned for not producing the required results.

Put together by the same director who made the marvellous Man On Wire, this is an enthralling and subtly appalling story, one that reveals as much about the inhumanity of humans as it does about the humanity on apes. And, damn, you come out of it really wanting to slap around those self-absorbed scientists.

Real Steel is, however, primarily a family film, running on movie clichés, populated by movie caricatures, and powered by an engine of pure schmaltz. Ex-fighter and deadbeat dad Hugh Jackman is reunited with his stubborn smart-ass 11 year old son and together they “train” an unlikely bot, progressing from underground bouts to the big tournament. Along the way many life lessons are learnt and predictable bonding occurs. And robots fight.

It’s big and bold and flashy and boys of a similar age to the young protagonist will probably love it.

Frayed is a nasty low-rent horror outing that rips off Halloween , goes nowhere except to a series of illogically stupid final twists, and takes too long doing it. Pre-teen Kurt bludgeons his mother to death and is institutionalised.

Years later he escapes and heads home, killing everyone in his path. A cast of unknowns stumble through a mess of predictable shocks, occasionally very unpleasant but hardly living up to the cover warning: “This film contains one of the most disturbing scenes ever depicted on film.” Even those who view that as a recommendation will be disappointed.

The treasures of China I have just returned from the most amazing Viking River Cruise of the Yangtze River, also visiting Beijing, Xian and Shanghai, to name just a few cities.

What a fantastic way to see such a diverse country. Being able to

walk part of the Great Wall, to experience being in the presence of the Terracotta Warriors, to see the 2 kilometre wide Three Gorge Dam, and so much culture in between.

I have a new passion and respect for such a vibrant and untouched country.

After flying direct from Auck-

land to Beijing, our base for five nights, we visited the Tiananmen Square, followed by the Forbidden City; a palace which has only just recently been accessible to locals. Then on to the Summer Palace with its beautiful tree-lined walkways next to the most beautiful lake.

Peking duck for ourselves, and it was well worth the wait!

The Great Wall, was amazing, to actually stand on the wall over 2000 years old, and walk parts of it, really makes you appreciate the vision the Chinese at very early stages had for the protection of their country.

We then flew to Xian and stayed in the brand New Crowne Plaza Hotel – not one to be missed. We experienced the Terracotta warriors for ourselves and to really comprehend the history and work involved with these clay soldiers and horses, is really something else.

From there we boarded our 5 night Viking River Cruise of the Yangtze River. What an amazing way to experience the local area, people and scenery

with luxury and comfort, whilst experiencing the culture had to offer, and the history and changing scenery whilst only unpacking once.

We finished with two nights in Shanghai, and with the ‘old and new’ city, side by side with the river between was an amazing sight to see.

China is a wonder in itself and one really you can’t appreciate until you have experienced it yourself.

Classic car show for Katikati cause Classic cars and motorbikes will be on display for charity at Browny’s this weekend.

The Katikati community is getting behind a worthy cause this weekend – keeping local schoolchildren filled up on breakfast, and ready to learn.

Browny’s Café and Bar, 6km south of Katikati on the corner of SH2 and Lockington Road, is holding a Charity Car and Bike Show this Saturday, with all proceeds going towards Katikati Ate Am Breakfast Club; an initiative that provides breakfasts for Katikati Primary and College students.

The event will feature classic cars, hot-rods and motorbikes on display, for a competition to pick the best car, best bike, and award the people’s choice for a selection of spot prizes. Local car and bike enthusiasts are encouraged to attend for a gold coin donation.

The event will also feature a craft and produce market

from 9-12pm, with food and drink available, raffles, and live music from 2pm with the Shirley Birds.

Browny’s co-owner Dion Smith says they heard the breakfast charity was running low on funding, so they thought they’d get behind the cause.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning at 8am, the Ate Am Club serves up Weet-Bix, scrambled eggs, baked beans and toast for the kids. The initiative has been running for eight years.

Anne Morriss, deputy principal of the junior school at Katikati Primary says any kids that need breakfast can join in, and they usually have around 60 come through each day.

“It’s something I think the school can be proud of, and the community, they’ve been so supportive. Everyone’s really getting in behind this to do something positive for the future of the children, and it’s great to see.”

Brotherly love put to the test Four Brothers find themselves on a whistle stop car journey from Whangarei to Invercargill to farewell their dying father; a situation that you would not expect to provide too many laughs but think again! Liam Hagan’s clever script was first brought to life at its premiere in Te Puke last year and Tauranga’s 16th Avenue Theatre had no hesitation in

picking up this remarkable play for its 2012 season. Newcomers to the 16th Avenue stage Declan Ronayne as Louis, Jaden McLeod as Robert and Robbie O’Hara as Jason were ably led by Hagan himself as Mitchell and all delivered polished performances. The very simple set demanded that the actors be able to paint the scenes for the audience and with the aid of some very technically tight light and music changes they successfully carried the audience along on this riveting journey south.

The key to real success Psychologist and author, Neil Anderson, gives this great summary of human emotions: Anger comes from a blocked goal; anxiety from an uncertain goal; and depression from an impossible goal.

For example, if your goal is to exit a door but I block your way, you feel angry.

Unsure if you can push past me, you feel anxiety. And having failed to push past me you feel depressed. We all deal with emotions, but sometimes the important question is ‘what is your goal?’

You see, there are many things we can’t control, and many people don’t achieve what they set out to in life. Imagine two women, born with exactly the same abilities, intelligence, looks and personalities.

Imagine they then worked equally hard and smart. Imagine they were the same in everything – except circumstances.

One becomes president, while the other a “Man looks at the outward slave. appearance, but the Lord Now, looks at the heart” that’s real life!

Repentance and the Gospel The Apostle Paul gives three different warnings in four key verses in Galatians 1. Firstly, that there are those who distort the gospel of Christ, making it another gospel from that preached by Jesus, the disciples and the early Church.

He warns secondly of the importance of not being persuaded away from the truth of God’s word and the gospel detailed in scripture even if an angel or one of the disciples, or Paul himself were to come with a contrary gospel.

He warns thirdly, and he does this twice, indicating the seriousness of the charge, that anyone who comes preaching a gospel contrary to that revealed in scripture, such a person shall be accursed!

It is important therefore that we know what the gospel is, that Jesus preached, that the disciples preached, that Paul preached, which is the gospel Paul says in Romans 1:16 that he is not ashamed of “for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes”.

The first aspect of the gospel that we see clearly preached in the New Testament was that of repentance.

The first recorded words that Jesus

preached were “Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand.” Jesus declared in Luke 5:32, “I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples and assured them in Luke 24:46, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.”

On the Day of Pentecost when the crowd cried out “what must we do to be saved?”, Peter replied in Acts 2:38, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Speaking about salvation, Peter says in 2 Peter 3:9, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”

Paul says in Romans 2:4 that it is God’s kindness (which is a manifestation of God’s heart of love) that leads people to repentance.
