We should have most of the wood splinters cleaned away by Saturday and a new, reinforced mailbox capable of receiving such a hefty document, installed by Monday.

The annual plan is no lightweight flyer. This is a serious piece of verbiage that makes the phone book look as unconvincing as the United Future membership list.

The good folk at the council should really warn us the morning they’re sending it out, so we can make sure we wear steel cap boots that day, in case it’s dropped on a foot.

The 256 pages make for some seriously eyelid-paralysing reading. It isn’t helped by the scintillating intro from the mayor, who apart from mentioning how they are throwing $43m at stormwater improvements after May’s freakish storm, waffles a bit about prioritising and consultation.

Then the killer blow: a black and white picture of the councillors that looks like a school photo from 1962 of the slow learners’ class.

It’s pretty much downhill from there, and the reader’s mind starts wandering as to where and how anyone is supposed to dispose of this doorstopper of a book without appearing rude – or threatening.

It’s not the sort of thing you can throw out without risking pulling a tendon, or knocking someone unconscious.

You could walk into a bank with this document and the tellers would all shriek “look out, he’s armed with a copy of the annual plan”.

So using my skills and experience as a journalist, I set about painstakingly inves-

tigating what this document is really trying to say. And obviously, as any seasoned professional would do, I asked someone else.

“Explain to me, in 15 words or less, what is really in these 256 pages of insomnia-curing flow charts, tables and spread sheets.”

So my learned contacts tried to explain it. Unfortunately I fell asleep somewhere between amortisation and the intangible assets, so the answer is still anyone’s guess.

Now they tell me

Speaking of books, another I stumbled across this week (although not large enough to break any bones) was titled ‘What Makes Women Happy’.

This was quite a revelation, thanks Fay Weldon. For at least 35 years I’ve been trying to figure it out by trial and error; now they tell me there’s a book. That could have saved men a lot of pain and anguish over the years.

I had no idea they came with an instruction manual. Turns out, it’s quite bit more complicated than we first thought. The fact it takes a whole book is a bit of a clue; we thought the information might have fitted into an A4 leaflet. Apparently not – there’s 230 pages.

Any blokes out there also wondering, give me a call. I haven’t read the book but I’ve looked at the pictures.

We’ve decided it’s time to recall Robbie Deans, now his mission is complete.

stuff up the Wallabies, Deans has been more or less successful, so we’re extracting him for another mission.

Most Australians, still blissfully unaware that Deans was a double agent working for the Men in Black, think he actually was trying to help make the Wallabies successful.

In breaking news, celebrity chef Nigella Lawson is calm in the face of news her husband, squillionnaire Charles Saatchi, is set to divorce her – which leaves Nigella free to profess her undying love for Wanaka camp ground manager Keith Waddell.

Nigella’s publicists have been battling for years to keep the lid on the steamy details of the downunder lust connection.

Thou shalt not cut Sandy Scarrow and Keith Frentz have come out on top in their bid to save two of the city’s Pohutukawa trees from getting the chop.

The Second Ave trees were reprieved this week following Sandy and Keith’s latest appeal against the felling and pruning of the natives.

Their earlier submissions against failed when delivered to Tauranga City Council’s Tree Management Sub-Committee on June 26.

But in a compromise decision that took the acting chairman Murray Guy’s casting vote, the sub-committee recommended one tree be felled and one be heavily pruned. While residents want three trees on the southern side felled.

Sandy Scarrow says the use of the casting vote is by convention to uphold the status quo, which would to keep the trees.

The sub committee’s recommendation also contravenes council

policy, says Sandy. Removing them will not protect the city’s mature tree asset – and is therefore inconsistent with council’s policy.

Keith challenges the city council’s approach to managing the city’s trees on behalf of their owners - the public.

Long term decisions are guided by policy because of councillors’ short three-year tenure. Making decisions inconsistent with its tree management policy is not something the council can take lightly, says Keith.

Particularly as the council recently went through an extensive planning process that reduced protected trees on private property from about 1800 to 350, favouring developers by allowing higher density living that may be restricted by mature trees on private property.

“In that process, council provided a landscape assessment that showed that our city is valued for its mature trees, especially when viewed from our

harbour,” says Keith.

Any consideration to remove a mature public tree should be measured by an appropriate landscape assessment, which has not been done, says Keith.

Protected trees are valued using the Standard Tree Evaluation Method. Keith, who is not an arborist, used the method to derive values for all three trees of well above the 130 points under which a native tree on private property is protected. His assessment remains unchallenged.

To go against its own recommendation the council legally has two options, it can – with a notice of motion signed by one third of councillors – rescind the recommendation, or it can call for a staff report.

Chairman David Stewart called for the staff report, with Mayor Stuart Crosby saying he will produce the notice of motion. Both the report and notice of motion will appear at a future meeting.

Fresh approach to mayoralty Jostling positions for the Tauranga City mayoralty campaign have heated up with a Tauranga food manufacturer throwing his hat in the ring for this year’s local body elections.

Kelvin Clout, owner of boutique food brand Fleur Foods, has announced he will stand for the city’s leadership in an attempt to refresh and invigorate Tauranga City.

The 50-year-old will try and challenge Mayor Stuart Crosby's nine-year reign while also standing for one of the two seats on the Te Papa-Welcome Bay Ward. The seats are currently held by Bill Grainger and Terry Molloy.

Kelvin has previously held the positions of Pinto Fruit Juice general manager, New Zealand Juice and Beverage president and Food Bay of Plenty chairman.

After living in Tauranga for 23 years with his wife Kathryn, and three children who have now left home, the time is right to deliver a real sense of business experience on a council struggling with “significant financial challenges”, says Kelvin.

“By looking into the last decade or so, the council debt is very close to half a billion dollars in debt.

This is pretty scary for future generations as they will be paying for our current debt.”

Kelvin believes interest rates alone, for the city’s debt, equates to $70,000 per day – one quarter of everyone’s rates bill.

Although a first-timer to local government, Kelvin is quick to dispel any concerns he is lacking motivation or experience.

Kelvin Clout is standing for Mayor in October’s local body elections.

“I come with fresh eyes and I’m very comfortable with experimenting and trialling things. If someone has got an idea why not explore and trial it.”

As part of his Kiwi can-do attitude, Kelvin has aspirations to “open the books” to the public, offering a more transparent council. This move will sit beside ensuring councillors are more proactive in their approach to responsibilities, in needing to set the agenda on behalf of the ratepayers.

Refining the vision of Tauranga is also “a must” after councillors, for too long, have made plans with no direct vision, says Kelvin.

“A fresh vision is needed for Tauranga, incorporating our natural beauty, fantastic lifestyle and vibrant economy, and increasingly youthful attitude of our people.

“Tauranga has a lot going for it but we need to capitalise on that.”

Ex-soldier shot dead after invasion An Opotiki couple are recovering from a violent home invasion ending with the offender being shot and killed in a shootout with police in Auckland this week. Alan, 66, and Anne Looney, 63, had their hands slashed as they were tied up during the attack at their rural Waiotahi home on State Highway 2 at 7.30pm on Sunday.

Police say the offender – Caleb Dean Henry then stole the couple’s dark blue Ford Ranger and firearm and led police on a dramatic car chase from

the Kaimai Ranges through the Waikato to Auckland. During the 350km chase police say the 20-year-old ex-soldier, who was discharged in 2012 for disciplinary reasons, fired at police numerous times before he was shot and killed on Auckland’s northern motorway about 2.15am on Monday.

Comvita founder dies at 102

Queens Service Medal recipient and founder of the Paengaroa-based natural health and beauty products company Comvita – Claude Stratford – has died.

The 102-year-old, six weeks off his 103rd birthday, died at his home in Carter House in Te Puke on Wednesday.

The philanthropist founded Comvita in 1974, at the age of 63, by making and selling a range of bee products from the basement in his home in Paengaroa.

Instead of the public seeing the backs of councillors’ heads, council staff are looking at new layouts that will turn things round in the council – so the public can see eye to eye with the councillors as they discuss the city’s business.

Also being looked at, are updated systems, including a Wi-Fi microphone and sound system, with a re-think on speaker positions so the public can more easily hear what is going on.

Councillors also expressed a wish, at a workshop meeting this week, for an investigation of electronic queuing so the meeting chairman can tell at a glance who is next in line to speak, instead of councillors having to wave their arms about to catch his attention.

Included in the spruce up is a tweaking of the air conditioning system, a re-paint to make the upper floor less gloomy, and re-modelling of the catering trollies. Murray Guy’s request for a coffee machine in the councillors’ lounge did not get support. The councillors’ lounge will instead get a new computer and a larger desk.

The changes are being made because of feedback from the public, says Tauranga City Council democracy services manager Yvonne Tatton.

“The public don’t feel that they are involved in the meetings the way the room is set up,” says Yvonne.

The current chamber set up is 10 years old.

Ship spills oil into harbour

A ship re-fuelling at the Port of Tauranga spilled a quantity of heavy fuel oil into the harbour last Wednesday.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council pollution prevention manager Nick Zaman says authorities are unsure of the amount that spilled from the Singapore flagged cargo ship Liloa. The island trader was re-fuelling at No.1 berth at the north end of the Mount Maunganui wharf on July 3 when fuel spilled onto the ship’s deck and into the harbour. Regional Council were alerted to the spill around 4.25pm on the Wednesday and worked through the night cleaning up.

When asked today why the public weren’t told about the spill and the clean-up the

following day, the regional council’s communications team said a press release was drafted but was not sent as no inquiries were made. It is currently reviewing its policy on informing the public on events such as the spill.

Todler shocks bus driver

A bus driver received medical attention this week after he was forced to slam on the breaks to avoid hitting a three-year-old girl in the middle of Windsor Road.

Police and St John Ambulance were called to Windsor Road at its intersection with Bellevue Road on Tuesday.

Police at the scene say a three-year-old girl had made her way into the middle of the road as the bus came around the corner. The bus driver was shocked and immediately stopped the bus.

Eyes wide open Alex Reid will answer to an army superior for five days as he trades in his Tauranga desk job for the sweltering temperatures of Kiribati.

But there will be no gun slinging or camouflage outfits – this is purely an observation mission seeing him study the ins and outs of what New Zealand Defence Force reservists do on deployments.

Leaving Sunday, the Higgins Contractor Ltd regional manager will spend five days in the Pacific Island country involved in a series of humanitarian activities through Exercise Boss Lift.

The exercise is an attachment to the Exercise Pacific Partnership: a joint initiative between the US and New Zealand Military, based annually in the pacific region.

Alex says it’s a wonderful opportunity he is grabbing with both hands.

The primary focus of this year’s exercise is on civil engineering, and the improvement of Kiribati’s environment, such as the fixing of the Friendship Bridge – the sole link between both sides of the island, something well suited to Alex.

“As a civil engineer I will be interested to see what work they do with the defence force.

“We have some reservists working for us and they come with a skill set and work ethic that has synergy with our business.”

Having never been to the country, it is a step into the unknown for Alex, but he is eager to soak up as much information as possible.

“I guess we have the potential to have a lot of people that can have an affiliation with the defence force.”

Lieutenant Commander Gerard McGrath says it’s important to show the community and employers the transferable skills reservists have, and how they use them to develop businesses and help others in need.

“We were looking for people who could do reconstruction quite quickly, like roading and building Higgins Contracting Ltd regional manager transport links.

Olympic dreams

Windsurfing’s exhilarating fusion of speed and racing has 14-year-old Coral Headey grasping every opportunity to make 2014’s Youth Olympic Games in China.

Oozing passion and enthusiasm, the Otumoetai College student began windsurfing one year ago – after five years’ sailing, and her early promise has Olympic medallist Bruce Kendall backing her.

Juggling intense training, competing, school and home life – Coral’s biggest hurdle is sponsorship.

“I’m trying to take every opportunity as it comes, and get as much fundraising and sponsorship as possible so I can compete in as many events as I can,” says Coral. “The more help I get, the better it’s going to be and the more I can do.”

Using borrowed equipment, Coral will buy her own in July at the World Championships in Poland.

She trains four days a week, with three additional gym sessions, and competes weekends. She will race in November’s New Caledonian Nationals and February’s NZ Techno Nationals and Oceanics – the Youth Olympics’ qualifier.

“The Worlds is a big stepping stone. I’m going to try and do the best I possibly can. When I get back to New Zealand, I’ll re-evaluate what I need to do to get to the Olympics.”

Coral is now trying to attract financial support to fund her campaign, as competing in her upcoming events costs more than $15,000 – excluding the Olympics.

“It costs so much … but it’s so cool competing overseas…the best thing is winning – it’s just such a buzz.”

Guided by top Techno coach Herve Pruvost, Bruce Kendall also trains Coral.

“She needs to take the next steps by training and competing on personal equipment with more regular coaching and measuring herself against the best in the world,” says Bruce.

Coral is Waikato Optimist Champion 2009-2011, 2012’s Tauranga Yacht & Power Boat Club Summer Series winner; and NZ Green Fleet champion.

Challenge ahead It might be the middle of winter but the beach is beckoning for the Bay of Plenty’s top surf lifesavers – with the athletes making up half of the 20-strong team named for the International Surf Rescue Challenge.

The squad, which heads to Japan in two months to compete against teams from seven countries, includes seven members from the Western Bay of Plenty in the under 20 team, and three in the open team.

After a stellar season competing in both junior and open class events, Papamoa club’s Natalie Peat has highlighted her calibre as a top surf athlete by becoming one of the youngest ever members of the open team.

The 18-year-old business student decided to up the ante last year, following her success at

2012’s junior world champs in Adelaide where she won three individual world titles.

“The world’s is a pretty big event so this gave me a really big boost coming back into our summer season. And I just knew I had to perform really well over our summer season to make this open team.”

After three years in the under20 development team, which she raced in when the International Surf Rescue Challenge was held in New Zealand two years ago, Natalie decided to “really step up” for the tougher challenge of winning a place in the open team.

“So all year long I’ve been racing in open events. I’ve still been racing in junior events, but I was racing in open events more often just to let the selectors know I could do both.”

Natalie was excited to win her place, alongside Mount Maunganui club member Lisa Carrington and Max Beattie from Omanu, but says hard

training – including chilly times on the beach – was only just beginning.

During last summer, Natalie dominated the ironman competition – an event she expects to be competing in in Japan – winning the Open Ironman series, then at the surf lifesaving nationals, winning the junior competition and coming second in the open.

Natalie is happy to see her Papamoa club’s three members competing, and says the dominance of Bay of Plenty members in the national teams reflected the clubs’ recent strength.

Wrestling with a challenge Bay of Plenty wrestlers are expected to collect their share of medals when the North Island championships are held in Katikati tomorrow.

The minor sport has developed a big name in the Western Bay town, which has hosted the championships three times before, with club coach Ross Tanner excited about the talent that is coming out of Katikati.

Ross, who has helped Katikati Wrestling Club founder Andy Roche with coaching for seven years, says the club is continuing its reputation for building top

young wrestlers with Caylen Greenwood and Brook White among the latest batch of talent.

“And we have some strong up-and-comers,” says Ross, listing 14 year-old national champions Ronin Ainsley and Tyler Corbett, along with Suraj Singh, as wrestlers who “are looking great for the future”.

Ross, who is also the New Zealand Junior coach, moved to coaching seven years ago after struggling to keep up with younger wrestlers, getting injured every time.

“It’s a pretty intense sport. People don’t realise how tough it is. You have people come along and they say `I’ll have a go at that – that looks like fun’.

But you only ever see them at train-

ing. It’s not for the faint-hearted that’s for sure.”

Caylen says it was the tough challenge that puts most people off that made him want to keep going.

“It’s just how hard it is. It’s not a sport that you come to and have a fun-time at training – you’ve got to give it everything. It’s just a grind.

I love it.”

This weekend Caylen, who competes in the under-74 kg division, is aiming for gold to add to his tally of three national titles and multiple North Island medals. Caylen – who says his proudest accomplishment is coming second in the Oceania’s in 2011 – is aiming to go one better in September when he competes at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships then the World Championships, both in Hungary.

Caylen is “pretty excited” about competing at the top international events; and hopes to follow with more top international contests. “I want to take it as far as I can. If I can take it to the Olympics I will.”

He encourages others to get involved in wrestling, saying he’s surprised it is not more popular, as it would be ideal for rugby teams to cross-train with.

Tomorrow’s 8.30am-7pm event at Katikati Action Centre is free for public to watch.

Sandy Scarrow, daughter of the late Eion Scarrow, TV greenfingers star, appeared in the public forum requesting the decision to fell one of the Pohutukawa’s be rescinded.

She has a degree in Horticultural Science.

Background to this is not simple.

I’ll run through it briefly.

Tree sub-committee comprises of Tony Christiansen (chairman), Bill Grainger (deputy chair), Larry Baldock, Murray Guy and Terry Molloy. Mayor Stuart Crosby is on all committees and has voting rights even though he is not expected to attend every meeting.

Tony has been away on leave of absence. Bill Grainger declared a conflict of interest because he knew one of the parties involved.

So Murray Guy chaired the meeting. A decision was reached on Pohutukawa Tree number one, for it to be “managed” by an arborist.

Tree number two wasn’t so fortunate – and on Murray’s casting vote the decision was for it to get the chop with Murray and Larry voting for; and Mayor Stuart and Terry Molloy voting against saying it should get the same treatment as tree number one.

After Sandy’s presentation to Strategy and Policy committee, debate raged even though standing orders precluded any decision at that meeting.

Finally it was agreed by majority, for a staff report to come back as soon as possible and Mayor Stuart gave notice that he would be bringing a formal Notice of Motion to rescind the Tree subcommittee decision. Murray was most unhappy about this.

The Notice of Motion will have to be counter-signed by four elected members.

Tree trouble

Trees are the subject of a lot of focus at the moment with the mid-winter sun being so low that many homes are left in shade.

Trees grow quickly in Tauranga and many privately-owned trees

overshadow neighbours – and there is little anyone can do about it on private property if the owner doesn’t want to attend to it.

Then we spent about an hour on parking for mobile vendors at council reserves.

Some mobile vendors have larger vehicles, requiring more than one park.

Council is keen to see that all activities on reserves, and sports fields in particular, are orderly, well-managed and provide a quality service.

Blake Park is the major bone of contention with parking at a premium. And it was eventually decided that there would be five mobile vendors. But staff had discretion to make allowance for two parks if required. Designated parking spaces for the mobile vendors will be tendered at Blake Park. But elsewhere the mobile vendors can roam at will, subject to bylaws that include no more than two on any reserve at any one time.

Elections looming

With the elections coming up in October the Remuneration Authority, that sets elected members pay, required a decision from us on the pay rates for the new council. Decision required by July 19!

They had already decided elected members pay will be $69,500 – down from $74,171. The new mayoral salary will be $138,600 – an increase from $136,700.

And, they allowed $104,250 for extra duties, like deputy mayor and committee chairs. After some discussion it was recommended $5000 extra for deputy mayor and $2000 extra for the chairs.

The balance out of the $104,250 is not to be accrued and won’t be spent elsewhere.

It probably won’t even be collected.

Elected member pay rates are topical. As I’ve said before, being an elected member can be an easy job or a hard job – or somewhere in between, depending on the effort put in. The irony

is that the individual elected member gets to choose which, and the unsuspecting ratepayers will find it hard to judge individual worth of contribution and effectiveness.

Certainly meeting attendance and utterances, sound bites, and photos in the media are among the lowest criteria to judge the worth of any individual elected member’s contribution in my view.

We also reviewed how the Council Chambers work – or doesn’t work. It’s been 10 years since the new Council Chamber was built; and in that time the air conditioning system has never worked consistently well. I asked for opening windows to get fresh air to no avail. The sound system has never been adequate. Staff are to report back with costings, including a Wi-Fi system.

A new configuration of the chamber would allow people, attending meetings, to look at elected members in the eye instead of the present layout where half present their backs to the gallery. I raised this poor set-up right from the start. But with cables already laid in the floor for the electronics it was in the ‘too hard’ basket.

Dancing up a storm The Tauranga Festival of Performing Arts has been a highlight on Delwyn Jeffs’ calendar for the last eight years – but this year it will be a little different for the passionate dancer.

Delwyn, 17, will be competing in tap and jazz dance competitions against the North Island’s best as per usual. But for the first time, she will also be watching her student’s compete from the side-line at Baycourt.

Since her first ballet lesson as a fiveyear-old, Delwyn has trained in a wide range of dance styles, including her favourite contemporary and lyrical styles.

And, for the last nine months, she has been teaching her own pupils, saying it’s satisfying to share her passion with a new generation of dancers.

“It’s really cool to see them performing and doing well.”

While she can’t remember exactly what awards she has won at the Tauranga Festival during the years, it has given her confidence in her dream of turning her passion into a career.

“Dance is my way of life, it is who I am – and ingrained in every fibre of my being,” says Delwyn, who after her competitions finish at the festival on Wednesday will fly out to Australia to audition for six dance schools.

“I want to pursue a career in dance and I just think there are a lot more opportunities in Australia with productions.”

Delwyn says her latest dancing highlights include being nominated Young Performer of the Year, for the last two years, by the Performing Arts Competitions Association of New Zealand.

After months of intense practice, more than 600 competitors from around the North Island are set to go head to head at Baycourt theatre. The 56th annual Tauranga Festival of Performing Arts begins tomorrow with highland dancing, instrumental and piano performances, launching what society president Annette Johnston is picking to a be a fiercely contested week-long competition.

Annette says with $30,000 in tuition scholarships and prizes up for grabs all young competitors

will be performing at their highest level for a chance to win. Competitions are held in eight art forms – including ballet, tap, highland and modern dance, and speech.

But it’s in the piano, instrumental and singing competitions that she is picking the toughest contests.

“Performing arts tuition is almost always private, so it can be quite a significant cost – so these scholarships are highly sought after.” The Tauranga Festival of Performing Arts, which is one of the largest of its kind in the

country, will see performers from pre-school to university age competing in a total of 2500 items.

“It’s one of the biggest competitions in the country, and from the standard I’ve seen it’s definitely one of the best. I’m continually amazed by what I’m seeing.”

Home insurance changes for you The Canterbury earthquake experiences have now brought into sharp focus the need for New Zealand’s insurance industry to be based on a specified “Sum Insured” instead of an unspecified “Replacement Cost”.

Historically, insurance has been assessed by way of “Replacement Cost”, being on a building area basis and an average industry “Replacement Cost”.

The definition in many home insurances has been full “Replacement Cost”

but this has been unspecified in dollar terms. The reinsurers now require facts.

Industry changes

Property insurers will now require a “Sum Insured” for property cover, being the maximum amount payable from July 1, 2013. This should include: - “Sum Insured” for a residential dwelling.

- “Sum Insured” for other buildings within a property.

- Inclusive of recreational features, for example, swimming pool, or tennis court.

- Inclusive of permanent landscaping/retain walls/paving.

- Special features

How to assess

Unless advised by a home owner, an insurance company may assess a “Default Sum Insured” – the average cost to build a standard house on a flat site in your area using the floor area of your home.

However, the “Default” method will in no way be specific to your property – no two properties tend to be the same.

There are online calculators available to assess “Sum Insured”.

All insurance companies are likely to have online calculators, but without proper input, the resultant figure could be misleading and premium costly.

Commission an independent Registered Property Valuer.

This will provide a comprehensive Insurance Certificate.

Other building professionals including quantity surveyors, licenced builders, etc.

Check costings with your provider.

General comment

The Canterbury incident has now brought property insurances into sharp focus; and we all remain vulnerable to major climatic events including rainfall events; land instability including earthquakes, volcanic activity, major storms/tornados; and the on-going threat of a tsunami to our coastline.

The new insurance regime will be much more factual, particularly if each property owner “sorts the issues” prior to their next insurance renewal. To act now is to avoid a daunting gap between what your insurance provider will pay out on a claim and the actual cost of replacement/repairs.

For Tauranga runner Andy Russell, the 12km run through TECT All Terrain Park’s terrain is just another opportunity to train for bigger events in the near future, including the Taupo Half Marathon.

Andy regularly competes in challenge events to help maintain his new-found love for running. Since picking up the hobby about 14 months ago, he has lost 26kg and is revelling in increased strength and fitness.

Having been completing four 10-15km runs a week, Andy hopes to knock Saturday’s event out in an hour – “which, being off road, is

Creative lantern making entertains It’s a riddle that can haunt parents every school holidays – how to entertain your children. But these holidays the answer could be lantern making workshops in Greerton.

The workshops are being run by former Lighten Up Lantern Festival organiser Ally Rogers – who ran similar workshops in Papamoa over the past two years – who will teach anyone how to make their own lanterns.

Greerton Village Mainstreet manager Victoria Thomas, who organised the workshop with the aim of helping many people create lanterns for next Friday’s IlluminArt festival, is encouraging anyone interested – not just school pupils – to take part.

“It would be great to see teenagers, and any creative types come along – it’s definitely for anyone interested.”

Stranger gifts new horse Jim and Debbie Hume’s grandchildren have a new miniature horse to enjoy thanks to a gift from a stranger – following their pet Milo being fatally attacked in front of the Katikati grandparents.

Kevin, who owns a seven acre block on Awhitu Peninsula, near Waiuku, says he could relate to Jim’s fear for his grandchildren being involved in the attack.

“I’ve got two daughters and two grandsons myself [who have spent time with horses], and, I had a miniature horse which I was going to be looking at re-homing in the near future, so I thought nothing ventured, nothing gained.”

But Jim and Debbie – who saw Milo being attacked by a dog from their neighbourhood on June 28 – are still wary of aggressive dogs.

“To me if any dog bares his teeth, my advice is to have it put down – it’s just not worth it,” says Jim. “If one of my grandkids had been playing with our Milo at the time, it could have been them

“We took Maryjane with us as the original horse was her pet as such. But this one is for all the grandkids – so they are all quite excited about it – and a couple have been down to see him already,” says Jim. Debbie is not too happy this horse is a little bit away from the house – with the couple not feeling their new addition is safe from aggressive dogs. “We’ll give him another few days [to settle in the yards] and will bring him closer to the house – but we are being wary,” says Jim. Stick to the safe behavioural enrichment Here goes the last bastion of fun for dogs: fetching a stick. Some vets are warning that throwing sticks is dangerous, as dogs can be injured.

As a dog who has suffered a string of calamities this year, including damaged saliva ducts that could have been caused by my incessant stick chasing habits, they could be right.

Thank goodness I’ve had the expert attention of the wonderful folk at Mount Mobile Vets to patch me up every time I’ve ripped, ruptured, gashed and grazed.

So some vets are saying that sticks are inherently hazardous, and other things are safer to throw for dogs.

One vet in the news this week reckons the problem with sticks is that they might hit the dog, or the animal might injure its mouth when lunging at a stick to catch it. In my case, running with sticks has been an

issue, especially over rough ground and jumping in and out of the harbour and lakes.

Wrestling with a long stick with Ady is one of our favourite past-times, but it seems those days might be over, too.

They say other toys are the answer, because it’s critical that dogs have playtime and “behavioural enrichment”.

The boss has been chuckling all week over that line, saying to me: “C’mon girl, let’s grab the ball and go to the park for some behavioural enrichment”.

Smart ass.

Even my second favourite thing, pine cones, have been outlawed.

So its balls and floppy flying discs for me. Darn PC rules!

Forget about reviving Georgie Pie, in its own modified fashion, leading Tauranga business woman Sally Morrison is sticking to the tried and true Mr Whippy ice cream van formula.

Sally, who is best known for her service to the community including chairing the Acorn Foundation trustees board, laughs at the suggestion she is turning her back on a health focus that last year helped earn her the Insignia of Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

“I thought it would be fun and something interesting to do,” says

Sally, who was convinced to invest in the Mr Whippy company when her four business partners agreed to commit to philanthropy – which started with giving free ice creams to Starship patients at Christmas.

Sally cut her business teeth growing Oakland Health under her ownership from a 19-bed medical hospital to a 102-bed medical hospital which specialised in rehabilitation.

“We are keeping the old because everybody loves Mr Whippy – we are not going to change the original. We have an enormous following so we want to keep those guys happy.”

She says the stores are putting Mr whippy on a new track, offering the classic soft serve ice creams along with frozen yoghurt, smoothies, coffee and cakes.

It’s a formula they hope to roll out nationally.

Sally has been lobbying her partners to set up a store in Tauranga – but says it is too early to say when that will be.

“We’d love to have one here.”

Next month, 60 franchise operators from around the country are expected to attend the Mr Whippy conference in Tauranga.

Finding new home satisfaction Need some stress in your life?

Try building a new home.

This is how home building is often portrayed.

Currently, an average 56 new homes are being

consented each month

by Tauranga City Council – that's about $17million dollars’ worth, so satisfaction for dollar spent is very important.

Just how satisfied are we when it comes to building the Kiwi dream?

A survey funded by the Building Research Levy revealed some surprisingly "satisfying" results.

A total of 68% per cent

surveyed were ‘very satisfied’ with the service they received from their builder, or building company, during construction.

The figure was similar when asked about the finished product.

However satisfaction with attending to callback work such as paint defects, rated low at 20.9 per cent.

Input into design

Just 1.4 per cent built to a standard plan range with most adjusting plans to reflect site or personal needs. A total 40 per cent of those surveyed had a one-

off design by an architect or architectural designer, reflecting the large amount of bee spoke building in New Zealand. Builders offering the greatest flexibility with plan alterations also rated highest for overall customer satisfaction.

The old adage ‘you're only as good as your last build’ was evident with 33 per cent of builders chosen through recommendation of friends and family.

Whether it's a new build, or altering your current home, you'll need a builder who is flexible and offers services backed by a 10 year Homefirst Builders Guarantee.

Is your rental investment income safe?

As of last month, there are more than 40 property management businesses in Tauranga looking after residential property management and renting houses.

Of those, there are only 12 that are licensed to any sort of organisation which are governed by legal rules and regulations, with the organisation they belong to being The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand.

We, who belong to the institute, must have a trust account where all rent monies we receive is banked and receipted.

This account must be audited every quarter by an independent accounting firm, while unlicensed businesses can use their own trading account for this money and have no authority overseeing the use of those monies.

We have hundreds of thousands of dollars going through these accounts every month. In Tauranga there is about $5 million dollars rent paid every

week, on average, and for some it has been found to be too tempting.

What has happened is there are some dishonest property managers out there who have used this money as their own.

The unfortunate part about this is there is no come back against them without a lengthy investigation by the Police. But that doesn’t help if you have been robbed.

The Government is looking at introducing some sort of regulation regime for keeping property management businesses licensed, so that they behave in a professional manner, are accountable and to ensure your Investment is safe by belonging to a regulated organisation such as The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand.

This is a push for you to use licensed real estate companies – we spend many years of experience and training to get licensed and we are proud to be members.

“It’s quite an emotional place to leave. Because people are so poor they are very appreciative of what we are doing – and everyone is so friendly. They are out there to help you.

“We get a lot out of the trip. It’s

really a matter of helping other people – it’s mind blowing.

It’s really hard to come back and say we are not going to go back – so what happens is I make these promises and off we go again.”

In the last four years they have built a new house every year, along with helping round the village with other jobs, such as paving footpaths and building work at the village’s 250-pupil Catholic school.

The trip, which students often later tell him is life-changing, is the culmination of nine months’ fundraising. All $27,000 raised goes into work on the ground, with each project member paying $1600 to cover their airfares, accommodation and food.

Roger says the villagers’ happy, simple life inspires students to help make a difference and appreciate their lives.

“It has a real impression on the students,” says Roger, who also describes the villagers’ vibrant church singing and farewell festival at the end of the two-week mission, as very touching.

Roger flies out today with an advance party of five to lay the foundations for a family home they are building in Vanuakula (on the island of Viti Levu), preparing the project for a mission group to “hit the ground running” on Monday.

Aquinas has worked with the village, which is inland from Suva, since the school opened.

But after Roger’s first mission four years ago he’s pushed it from being biennial to a yearly service trip.

This year, 38 are going in the party – including 24 Year 13 students, three builders, a plumber and three teachers – with everyone taking 10kg of second-hand children’s clothes from St Vincent De Paul and reading books donated by Greenpark School, in Roger Dunham packs for the trip. The Weekend Sun is profiling some of Tauranga’s historic places dotted around the city. To start off, reporter Zoe Hunter looks at one of the oldest buildings in Tauranga.

Occupied by one family for nearly 100 years, Brain Watkins House is one of two historic houses in Tauranga still with its original contents.

According to Tauranga Historical Society, the house was built in 1881 by Joseph Brain and is registered by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust as a Category II Historic Place.

Joseph’s youngest daughter Elva Brain Watkins gifted the house to the Tauranga Historical Society in 1979.

Today the society manages, preserves, and displays the history in the house museum at 233 Cameron Rd, on the corner of Elizabeth St. House treasurer and former president Shirley Arabin says the house offers a glimpse of middle class life in New Zealand across a period of 100 years.

Consistent consenting Those having building work done can rest a little more easily following the release of new guidelines that aim to ensure consistent and accurate documentation for building consents.

While motivated in part by the high volume of Canterbury properties needing repair or rebuilding work, the guidance document released this week by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment will affect all regions throughout the country.

The guidance supplements previous direction on restricted building work that came into force in March 2012.

All restricted work must be carried out or supervised by a licenced building practitioner, or registered architect or engineer.

A ministry statement says the update aims to clarify legislative requirements relating to the restricted work, encourage consistent processes and foster good practice for those who issue and accept certificates of design work, producer statements and design features reports during the building consent process.

The documentation is required for restricted work.

The restricted work regime relates to houses or small-medium apartment buildings for building which relates to the primary structure or external moisture management system and requires a building consent.

It is a square Kauri villa – a style that was very popular in its day.”

Shirley says the house is original in the fact that one family lived in the house for 100 years and nothing has been altered or added except the time line panels in the History Room – formerly a bedroom.

“All of the furnishings and other contents of the house belonged to the owners.”

Shirley says there are only six historic houses in the country which feature the original contents.

“We are lucky in Tauranga to have two of them.

The Elms, of course, is the other.”

The house is open to the public on Sunday afternoons 2-4pm. Entry is $4 for adults and $10 for a family.

Freedom camping frustration Mount Maunganui resident Graham Matthews wants councillors to move the permitted area for freedom campers from along Marine Parade to Papamoa so his “unique” view won’t be restricted.

He is proposing the bylaw – allowing freedom campers to park from Banks Ave and along Marine Parade – be moved to Papamoa Beach Rd south of Sunrise Ave. “It’s all dunes all the way along there and it wouldn’t interfere with anybody,” says Graham.

If it is made legal for freedom campers to park along Marine Parade, the view he has been enjoying for more than 20 years will be restricted.

Graham and his wife live between Tay St and Clyde St where Graham says freedom campers will most likely park their motor homes if the bylaw is passed.

“We paid for the view, the freedom campers pay nothing. As far as I’m concerned it should never happen.

“What benefit are we going to get out of it? The ratepayers will get exactly nothing.”

Graham says residents who live on Marine Parade pay more than double than what other ratepayers pay for their beach view.

“We bought the view, it wasn’t given to us.”

The Freedom Camping Bylaw states motor homes parking along Marine Parade must be less than 3.5 tonnes, and must be parked within marked parking spaces.

The motor home must not protrude past the painted lines when parking in diagonal car parks.

People have until July 19 to enter their submissions to Tauranga City Council and Graham is encouraging other residents along Marine Parade to have their say.

“Do you have any idea how much Christchurch builders are overcharging now – it’s like you wouldn’t believe,” says Chris.

His company Earthcube makes homes out of containers – and Chris says he can ship a five bedroom container home of 162 m2, costing $320,000, to Christchurch for $20,000.

Chris says his container homes are not cheap. The low emission insulation and materials are all sourced outside the normal New Zealand building supply channels.

“We have had a number of people fly up to meet with us,” says Chris after the meeting.

“They just think it will be really cheap to build with containers.

“But by the time you have done all the things you have got to do, to do it properly; it’s not the cheapest way to do it.”

“Sometimes it totally saves money, other times it just doesn’t.”

Containers stack, span and cantilever for free, so some, otherwise expensive, engineering is free. “But there is no way there are going to be curved walls or anything that doesn’t fit the container Lego block style,” says Chris.

“So it’s got its place, that’s what I’m saying. The really big shock is so many people think this is going to be cheap.

“And we’ve had several companies start-up, trying to copy our idea and they have been really shocked to realise its not cheap.

“It can be cheaper in some cases; and it can definitely be better quality there’s no doubt about that, because of the amazing strength you are working with.

“The quality comes from great design. You take that Lego block and do something really interesting with it.”

Gruelling marathon ahead National MX crosscountry champion Adrian Smith aims to settle his unfinished Bay of Plenty business at the Tarawera 100 this weekend.

Top Mount Maunganui motocross rider Ben Townley is facing fierce competition this weekend in his battle to win the legendary Honda Tarawera 100 cross-country dirt bike marathon.

Since recovering from a broken collarbone, prompting him to retire from the international motocross circuit earlier this year, Ben has been focussed on winning the legendary 100-mile (160 km) race near Kawerau.

With four-time winner Cody

Cooper out of the race due to other commitments, Ben is picked as race favourite – but three-time New Zealand cross-country champion Adrian Smith has other plans.

Adrian, who recently claimed his third national cross-country title, says he has unfinished business to complete in the Bay this weekend.

Neither riders have won the 100mile race before – with Ben making his debut, while Adrian says bad luck has worked against him.

“This just seems to be one event that I always stuff up,” says the 27-year-old. “I fried my clutch one year because I was riding too aggressively and, on another occasion, I ran out of gas.

“Hopefully I’ve learned some lessons from those mistakes and this year I can finally win it.”

Adrian is hoping his smaller Yamaha YZ250 will be able to match some of the country’s best dirt bike exponents that Ben’s Honda CRF450 and fifth-ranked MX 2 motocross rider Peter Broxholme’s Honda CRF450 – also from Tauranga – wont.

“A lot of motocross guys enter the Tarawera 100 and those guys are definitely not slow. I know that Ben Townley, Peter Broxholme and cross-country nationals rival Jason Dickey will be fast but, if I have them in sight near the end, then I have a great chance.”

Kiwi hopes resting on Bay boy After a great start to the Asia Pacific Rally Championship series in Whangarei, upcoming Bay of Plenty driver Michael Young is determined to extend his lead in Queensland this weekend.

Opotiki-raised Michael, who is the leading two-wheel drive and junior cup driver in the series, is focussed on achieving a top result at the International Rally of Queensland near Caloundra.

“Our goal is just to get more time in the Cusco Toyota Vitz and win the two-wheel-drive class outright, as well as

the junior cup,” says Michael, the only registered Kiwi competing in the series.

Michael is expecting a tough battle with rival Adrian Coppin, who has already laid down a challenge to beat him, but says their top focus will be on doing well in the championship.

The Queensland rally is 223 km of closed stages during two days, starting from Nambour on Friday at 6.30pm.

After Queensland the series continues in Malaysia on August 24-25, before rounds in Japan and China.

Tauranga’s speed camera network to expand the country in the middle of next year, as part of the Static Camera Expansion Programme. The new cameras are will allow Police to be able to ticket other traffic offences besides speeding.

These include red-light-runners, “lane non-compliance”; and identify the speeds of different vehicles – such as trucks, which should be travelling only 90km in a 100km zone.

Premium sales boost Latest sales figures show BMW Red Baron has cemented its place as New Zealand’s Motorcycles Ltd favourite premium with a big jump in June sales.

Red light runners and drivers who illegally change lanes will soon be on the radar for Western Bay of Plenty Police with the implementation of a new speed camera network.

Tenders have been sought for an increased number of new digital speed cameras to replace the current film cameras which have been in use in New Zealand since 1993.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says he is not sure when the system will be implemented in the Western Bay.

Ian says it depends on when the technology is acquired and when final deployment dates are.

“The new system means there will be greater compliance with speed limits, lane driving and traffic signals.

“I look forward to the new technology and capabilities of this equipment and the enhancements it offers to improve road safety and reduce behaviours that cause crashes.”

Ian says those behaviours include speeding, following too close, running red lights and not indicating when attempting to change lanes.

Hi-technology digital cameras are expected to be rolled out throughout

Registrations show BMW has finished the first half of 2013, retaining the number one position it held last year. The brand’s lead in the premium market was boosted, with a near-record 201 registrations, in June – a figure BMW New Zealand managing director Nina Englert says is definitely the second highest sales month ever.

“There is a little conjecture due to the accuracy of some data, but I’m comfortable confirming if it’s not the best month ever, then it’s a closely-run second.”

The brand’s sales are up 21 per cent compared with the same time last year, while the entire passenger car market is up only 5 per cent.

Nina attributes BMW’s on-going success to the strong product portfolio, brand loyalty from returning drivers; and strong interest in the newest addition to the BMW line-up, the BMW 3 Series Touring with xDrive.

Taking the first step to life as a racing star Xbox champions, motorsport enthusiasts and boy racers – forget about dreaming of life as a race star and take your first step later this month in the Tauranga Clubman’s Rally.

The Motorsport Bay of Plenty rally, which is being held at TECT All Terrain Park on July 21, is being held in the clubman’s rally which is ideal for

newcomers to rallying. Rally Secretary Linda Loughlin says the event will be a held in the true clubmans’ format this year, which requires less than 80km of special stages, competitors restricted to 50 and no stage notes.

“So it’s great for beginners as well as those just out for a good day.”

Linda says there has been strong interest from novice drivers and codrivers (who have competed in less than four events), accounting for 40

per cent of those registered to date.

The event, which was last held in 2010, was previously run under a national permit which allows for a lot more touring and up to 130km in special stages.

This year’s course is on forestry roads in the Mamaku Forest and Te Matai Motorsport’s area in TECT All Terrain Park, with only 43km of touring.

Linda says along with offering a better event for novices, the changed format is also to cut entry costs. All cars competing need to meet safety standards with roll-cages and full harness seatbelts required.

Buckle up booster welcome change Plunket is welcoming the law change requiring child car restraints until seven years, but is encouraging parents to consider using booster seats even longer.

Tauranga Plunket manager Sandy Waugh says the law change is a step in the right direction, but says children should remain in child restraints until they are the right height (usually aged between nine and 12).

“It’s a very good decision, even though at age seven most children are still under 148cm, the height when an adult belt correctly fits.”

Plunket national child safety advisor Sue Campbell says New Zealand has one of the highest child fatality rates in the OECD with about five children killed or injured every week.

Sandy says despite the law change increasing from five years, which takes effect in November, New Zealand still lags behind many other OECD coun-

tries – including Germany, UK, Hungary, Spain and Switzerland where booster seats are required until 12.

Associate Transport Minister Michael Woodhouse says the law changes, which also require children aged from seven to eight to use a restraint if one is available, were designed to reduce injuries and save young lives.

He says it was a “pragmatic balance” between improved road safety and limiting the burden on parents.

“Increasing the age from five to seven aligns New Zealand with the rules in Australia and Japan. Children can be particularly vulnerable in crashes due to seat belts being designed for larger bodies.”

Sandy says children need to remain in booster seats until they can comfortably sit in the car seat with their bottom against the seat back and their knees bent over the seat edge. Otherwise, the seat belt sits too high on a child – leaving them vulnerable to major internal injuries to the abdomen or head and spinal injuries with the belt sash across the neck. Tamarillo temptation to tantalise the tastebuds Tamarillos are like the fruit equivalent of broad beans: you either love them or hate them.

I can recall from my childhood this unusual fruit, called a tree tomato (a relative of the tomato, eggplant and capsicum and potato), originating from Central and South America.

A lost food of the Inca Empire, tree tomatoes have all but disappeared from their native habitat.

Introduced into New Zealand in the 1800s they were purple and yellow, and in the 1920s the red variety was developed in Auckland from South America sourced seeds.

The fruit’s commercial name was changed in

DESSERT Stealth Tamarillo and almond surprise

1967 to avoid confusion with the common garden tomato.

Today, the demand for the fruit remains strong as an awareness of its unique flavour and nutritional qualities grows.

For this week another quick pudding recipe, similar to the lemon pudding, but gluten free.

The tamarillos are hidden in an almondflavoured sponge.

(serves 4-6)

Ingredients ½ cup milk ¾ cup yoghurt 3 eggs separated 1 whole egg 3 heaped Tbsp fine Polenta ½ cup maize corn flour 1cup ground almonds 1 tsp vanilla essence ¾ cup caster sugar ½ cup brown sugar 5-6 tamarillos, peeled and thick sliced ½ cup flaked almonds (optional) Method Preheat oven to 180c and

sprinkle most of brown sugar over thickly sliced tamarillos.

Place milk yoghurt, egg yolks, 1 whole egg, vanilla, all but two Tbsp of caster sugar, polenta and corn flour in a food processor and mix until smooth.

Pour some of batter into a deep, well-greased baking dish (about 1cm) and bake for about 7-8minutes until set.

Whisk egg whites until stiff, gradually adding the two Tbsp of caster sugar, carefully fold in ground almonds and add to the rest of the batter.

When the base has set, add the pre-sugared slices of tamarillos add extra brown sugar on top of the fruit, then top with the now lightened batter.

Bake topped with flaked almonds for 35-40minutes.

Serve hot, dusted with icing sugar and runny cream – a great way to have tamarillos!

The call is going out for women to take part in a glitzy fundraiser, supporting parents of Tauranga’s disabled and special needs children.

The fundraiser sees women pay $100 and receive professional hair and makeup, and a glamorous photo-shoot with Dream Shots Studios, plus a gift bag with vouchers and makeup – normally worth $300.

Manager Julie Dickens says all funds will go to Parent-to-Parent

– a national charity offering support to parents with disabled or special needs children.

As a member of the Tauranga branch, Julie says the charity is crucial to the parents involved.

Julie has an eight-year-old son with ADHD and has attended the monthly support meetings for two years.

“It’s absolutely vital, I have friends with children in wheelchairs, the mums get together and have a chat and learn things from parents in the same situations.

“I think if they didn’t have that support group they would be

so depressed.”

Julie hopes to get 20 women signed up for the fundraiser on July 19 and 20, making $2000 for the charity.

“We did one three weeks ago for Canteen in New Plymouth and it was really successful, we had an absolute ball.

“It’s lovely for ladies to come through and just be pampered and look absolutely gorgeous.”

3. Always pay cash. Leaving your credit card at home and setting yourself a budget means you are more likely to keep track of what you’re eating and stay within your limitations.

Research also shows people spend, and subsequently eat, about 30 per cent more when paying with credit card.

Five servings a day keeps the doctor away During a nutrition consultation with a client I asked how many servings of fruit and vegetables he would, on average, eat per day.

You can imagine my amazement when he told me he might have one serving of vegetables possibly five days a week and, if lucky two or three pieces of fruit per week.

The same day I received a research paper detailing an investigation into the health of British children who are showing symptoms of third world diseases: rickets and scurvy.

The reason for these diseases appearing in a developed country was put down to the poor diet where families are living on takeaway foods and spending hours on computers or in front of the television getting no exercise or exposure to sunlight.

Current job crisis NZers’ concerns on Tauranga not a welcoming city

Not serious about Unemployment: In the age of high unemployment in New Zealand you would rightly start to wonder what the Government has planned to alleviate the current crisis. After all, to have more people working is to have less people on welfare and also more people working means more people paying taxes means more revenue for the Government.

This simple economic concept seems to have escaped the Government, who continue to stick it to the working population of New Zealand. This is apparant by their actions by letting overseas interests tender and win government contracts that would benefit New Zealand workers and keep New Zealanders employed.

And further, to let countless new immigrants into the country to work while countless New Zealandrs are unemployed and remain on the welfare scrap heap.

When the Government say they are serious about alleviating unemployment we should scoff at their lies, actions speak louder than words, and there has been little or no action from them.

Re Tommy Kapai’s complaint about the SCF bailout of $1.7 billion (5/7/13), a recent NBR article

by Mike Butler estimated that total spending on Maori by the Government could be as much as $1.3 billion per year, with another $700 million in devolved social services such as government-funded charitable trusts run by tribes.

The SCF bailout was only done to maintain financial stability after the worldwide economic crash of 2008, and was beneficial to investors of ALL races. It was not funnelled into the pockets of the so-called indigenous elite as so many dubious treaty settlements are.

I echo the sentiments of M Walmsley (letters 5/7/13) that Tauranga is not a visually welcoming city. I especially agree about the appalling vegetation at the Elizabeth St roundabout that is incredibly messy and very uncomplimentary to the magnificent flagpole, and about which I have previously complained via these letter pages.

Many areas have well-tended colourful flower displays but our most prominent roundabout has old brown bushes!

It’s also unbelievable that Tauranga City never has any decent Christmas decorations, only a half-pie tree on a box and the tatty garlands that have

stretched across Elizabeth St for the last twenty years. Other far smaller towns have wonderful displays with illuminated stars and candles around the lamposts, magnificent Christmas trees, and all kinds of Christmas themes. I challenge Mainstreet, in conjunction with businesses and retailers, to create magnificent Christmas displays and light up our city to attract people to the CBD and welcome the cruise ship passengers. There’s still time to plan it, and maybe TECT could help with the electricity costs. And please get rid of those dreadful garlands that are long past their use-by date.

According to F.P.’s national medical advisor, Dr. Christine Roke, the “increasing popularity of a contraceptive implant could see abortion rates fall further”.

Maybe, for surgical abortions. Truth is the Jadelle contraceptive device may actually increase the abortion rate, higher than ever before.

The Jadelle mode of action is a timed release of levenorgestrol which is an abortifacient.

It inhibits ovulation, thickens cervical mucus, and alters the lining of the uterus to resist the implantation of the

tiny human being who subsequently dies. Such abortions happen, but can’t be registered.

Google tells us: “Fertility rods may have hidden faults”, then describes U.K.’s Medicine and Healthcare Regulatory Agency as reporting 36 instances of Implanon devices (predecessor of Janelle) migrating after implantation, and five cases where they could not be found, thus rendering the recipients infertile.

Last week Seven Sharp, had great viewing of a school that did not want or need the taxpayer to fund food in its school. It already had a culture where children and parents believed that feeding and loving children was the only way for young ones to succeed socially, physically and spiritually.

To view the bright, happy faces of those kids who were eating their lunches out of ‘home’ prepared lunch boxes was a ‘view of the future’.

A damned, crying shame that our country is run by the Harawiras, Pita Sharples, Turiana Turia, dogooders, Maori activists, university-bred socialists, academics and governmental ministry minions and of course, the sycophantic politicians in the National, Labour and Green parties whose sole answer to any problem is chuck more taxpayers’ money at it.

If those people had half a brain they would be searching out these amazing models (and there are a few of them) and making sure the goodness in our communities was being replicated throughout NZ. Common sense, true values and committed adults can, and, do make a difference.

Selling us out to stay in office Contrary to Tommy Kapai’s claim, the government bailout of South Canterbury Finance (SCF), under the Crown retail deposit guarantee scheme, did not cost us taxpayers $1.7 billion; with assets realised, it amounted to half that ($805 million, to be exact).

That’s still a heck of a lot in anyone’s money, but it’s less than the total paid so far (and climbing) to Maori in settlement of Treaty claims.

There’s another difference.

Whilst five former SCF directors are to face trial next year for alleged dishonesty, fraudulent Treaty claims (for chapter and verse, read “Twisting the Treaty”)

will go unchallenged. This is because we have a government that will do anything to secure the continuing support of the Maori Party; it will cheerfully sell us out in order to stay in office.

Never mind the long-term implications: political probity doesn’t come into it.

Mr Kapai may deride (in his quaint way) those of whom he disapproves, but name-calling is childish and achieves nothing.

We shall continue to expose the weakness of an unprincipled National-led administration, the deviousness of iwi claimants, and the anti-democratic nature of Maori separatism (including cogovernance).

In time, the people of this country will come to realise the wrongfulness of it all. Fashions, like governments, come and go.

A clear crystal ball shows that part-Maori today, through their intermarriage with a huge influx of people from countries such as China, Asia, Middle East etc. will mean that any claim to be Maori will be pathetic to say the least. Hopefully, we will then become a multicultural country of very mixed ethnicities but proud to call ourselves New Zealanders.. Let us hope that Maori whingers and compensationists will be a thing of the past.

settlement money does not trickle down to those who need it most. Kapai moans that the Government (aka all of us) bailed out Canterbury Finance for $1.7 billion which he claims is more than Treaty settlements.

Fact is Treaty settlements have cost (all of us) $39 billion in Forestries, Fisheries, land, buildings and money.

As he says “Kai for thought!” As for Ngai Tahu owning the South Island, the canny Scots of Dunedin will have something to say about that! Mary Brooks, Avenues.

Do you really think that that is all that 42% of the National Fisheries and 38% of our National Forests are worth? And pre-Treaty Maori never planted a tree and their ability to fish 80 km offshore is rather unlikely.

Currently, Maori assets developed, from Treaty Settlements, are in the vicinity of $40 billion. Check Google or ask Sir Tipene or Sir Steven.

He was ordered to pay reparation of $2748.08 in relation to the careless driving charge, fined $300 plus court costs, and disqualified from driving for six months.

The free, interactive and online programme will teach children, aged five to 16, how to cook iconic Kiwi meals including a roast dinner, pancakes, carrot cake and Claire’s favourite – chocolate chippie biscuits.

Don’t forget the basic food skills, including chopping an onion and how to hold a knife correctly, which children will learn along the way.

“It’s just giving them the skills so that they can look

Taekwondo juniors kicking it in Auckland The Aotearoa Taekwondo Te Puke is celebrating after a weekend of success at the Under 13 Southside Rumble Taekwondo Championships in Auckland.

More than 80 juniors attended, where each of Te Puke’s contenders took away a medal.

Blake Ward, Maanauri Wilson and Mahinarangi Wirihana all won gold, while Parekotuku Williams, Laksyha Dhillon and Emma Kendrick won silver.

Club spokesperson Moana Gould says the team did “exceptionally well”, and some of the proceeds will fund two of the senior national champions competing in the World Taekwondo Championships in Mexico this month.

Exciting times ahead for upgrading plaza Exciting times are ahead for Palm Beach Plaza with significant upgrades scheduled to begin in the next few months.

Manager David Hill says plans for phase one, of about seven stages, are on track and centre staff are excited to begin the transformation.

“We can’t wait. I’ve done it all before with Richmond Mall, so we know exactly what we’re in for over the next two-to-four years and it’s very exciting.

“It’s such good fun to be involved in a shopping centre development and I know the residents of Papamoa will love what we have planned for them.”

Nelsonbased specialist shopping centre investor Tinline Properties purchased the complex for a confidential price early this year, taking over in April.

David says the centre will remain open as upgrades progress, and the public will be able to view the transformation from behind chickenwire mesh.

“Everyone will get to see what’s going on. Normally when you have works, you have it behind boarding and box it off.

“We’ve done the complete opposite and opened it up. It’s quite good for the kindy kids and school kids to come down and see what’s going on.”

Speaking of children – before upgrades begin, families are invited to visit the plaza during these school holidays and enjoy the talents of Zirka Circus.

The circus will perform every day during the holidays, another step in the plaza’s plans for a solid community hub.

“It’s a community meeting place, it’s the hub of the community, so it seemed logical to invite the circus here for the holidays,” says David.

Encouraging children’s creative talents In a bid to encourage and grow Tauranga children’s creative talents, two local art tutors made it their goal to encourage their young students to “be as brave as possible” when it comes to their art.

The results of Joyce van der Lely and Jenny Grant’s efforts are being displayed during the last two weeks of July at Lightwave Gallery.

Art from 50 children will don the walls in the vibrant exhibition, titled ‘Raging Redbows and Rainstrings’.

The women say the aim is for the children to experience pleasure and pride from their work, and for visitors to be creatively

inspired.

“The kids create a lot of mess, make mistakes and enjoy the creative process,” says Jenny.

“At the same time, it is important that children feel that what they create has real value.

Usually, children’s art does not get the respect it deserves and their creative process is often considered very messy.”

The women believe art is one of the most

important skills children need to succeed academically.

“Plenty of creative thinking will be needed in the world our children are facing.

“To help our children stay creative we need to let them use their natural curiosity and be playful.

We should let them make mistakes and be brave to try new things.”

French fun in Katikati

French conversation, musique, and gourmet food will swirl in Katikati this Sunday afternoon in celebration of Bastille Day.

On discovering one of Katikati’s early pioneers taught French to other settlers in her home – a group of ladies decided to create Katikati Club de Francais.

“Adela Stewart of Athenree Homestead taught French to settlers,” says member Terelle Carroll.

“So that’s where we got the idea from.”

The French Club of Katikati began six months ago, with five women meeting weekly to speak French.

“Because the homestead is part of Katikati’s early history we decided to

celebrate Bastille Day at Katikati Heritage Museum which ties the link with Adela nicely.”

Celebration organiser Christine Donahue says French clubs and groups in Tauranga have been invited to the event, “and anyone else with an interest in French matters is welcome to come along”.

A set French menu offering French onion soup with creamy mushroom and chicken crepes and a chocolate dessert is available – or guests can order from the a la carte menu.

Live entertainment includes the Dancing Divas, and others performing French music.

“We hope many can join us for an afternoon of fun, frivolity and Francais joie de vivre [exuberance]. A bientot [see you soon],” says Christine.

Similarly, house building is not something I’ve ever regarded as a competitive sport.

Or cooking for that matter. Fashion design?

Baking? Who cares as long as it’s a competition? Even general knowledge needed to be made into QI before anyone wanted to know anything. TV3 now presents current affairs as a winner versus loser scenario on The Vote.

News is just so boring without a victor at the end.

I blame it on sport.

If music now resembles a competitive sport then what resembles a competitive sport even more is competitive sport. Whoever thought to make competitive sport a competitive sport was a genius.

It certainly inflames passions. Even more than music, which is why, I guess, it is still more popular in New Zealand. Perhaps X Factor and all those other contests can learn a thing or two. More passion! I was struck, for instance, by news out of Brazil earlier this week. Brazil’s the place hosting the Football World Cup next year, so they’re pretty passionate about their sport. What have they got to teach the X Factor?

Well, during an amateur game in Pio XII it seems a 30-year-old player got into an argument with the referee. This ended when the referee produced a knife and stabbed the player. To death. Now that’s the sort of thing you don’t see on the X Factor. Do they search the judges first or could young Stan be secretly harbouring a skiv?

But it’s what happened next at the football game that made me think of the X Factor.

Spectators burst onto the pitch and attacked the referee. And beheaded him.

Yep. I kid you not. They beat him to death and beheaded him. Now that’s what we need the next time a popular contestant is sent home (or knifed to death) by the judges. A little more “audience reaction”...

Another activity that isn’t competitive is songwriting, though there are songwriting competitions all over the place including, sometimes, on television. Fortunately, most songwriters are motivated by deeper forces than those who want to be an instant idol.

Most songwriters toil away in relative isolation. Like any writer, that’s kinda the deal. It does, however, make it hard to learn, except by recognising and correcting your own mistakes.

But help is here in the form of a very interesting-looking masterclass being organised by the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. It is led by American singer/songwriter Kevin Welch, a co-founder of the Dead Reckoning Records label and a man who has had serious success with his songs. Working largely in the country genre he has had songs recorded

by Waylon Jennings, Ricky Scaggs, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood and Don Williams amongst others.

writing guru Pat Pattison to town for two fascinating sessions. I saw many local musicians (as well as music students) there and everyone I spoke to was blown away by the new ideas presented. No songwriter thinks of everything on their own so a bit of input can be invaluable.

Input is what Kevin will be giving. You can submit songs (first in, first on the list) to be critiqued, or just listen and discuss. I think this will be a brilliant night for aspiring songwriters of any skill level. It’s happing at the Level 5 Café at the Bongard Centre on Cameron Rd on Tuesday, July 23 from 6.30 to 9.30pm and costs $125, or $100 with an APRA or student discount. The next of Tauranga Musica’s 2013 performances brings with it the sound of four top baroque musicians, presenting a themed programme of the best of the baroque era: ‘A Baroque Dawn to Dusk’.

‘Barocca’ is the latest addition to New Zealand’s early music scene, combining the talents of four Wellington-based musicians, including harpsichordist Erin Helyard, founder of Sydney’s Pinchgut Opera.

Emma Goodbehere and soprano Rowena Simpson are both recent graduates of The Royal Conservatory in The

Hague. Emma is a core member of New Zealand’s premier baroque orchestra and Rowena teaches baroque singing at the NZ School of Music.

Kamala Bain is a performance graduate of the Conservatory of Amsterdam.

Together they have concocted a delightful programme that traces the hours of the day in music, from dawn to dusk.

“We’ve had such fun putting this programme together and can’t wait to take it on the road – it’s full of delights, really the best of Baroque, stretching from the court of Louis XIV right down to the kingdom of Naples,” says Rowena.

The show is playing in Tauranga at Otumoetai College’s Performing Arts Centre on July 21.

Ladi6 at Mount

ZERO DARK THIRTY Starring: Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Mark Strong, Joel Edgerton - Dir: Kathryn Bigelow Zero Dark Thirty starts with a blank screen and frantic voices from the World Trade Centre attacks. Then there’s an overwhelming rush of technical information and spy talk. For the first ten minutes you’re thinking “what the hell is going on?” But, no need to worry. It all becomes clear soon and this is obviously a short-hand way of establishing “authenticity”, by throwing you straight into the heart of operations.

Despite ethical considerations, this is a expertly made film. Why would you expect any less from someone of Katherine Bigelow’s skill? She knows how to do action and how to do suspense (previous films include Near Dark, Point Break and The Hurt Locker), and here applies her skills to a riveting procedural

There hasn’t been a good old City Hall political thriller for some time – excepting TV’s brilliant Boss - and Broken City aims to fill the gap. Russell Crowe is the mayor here, bringing in an old mate, disgraced ex-policeman Mark Wahlberg, to investigate his wife (Katherine ZetaJones) possibly having an affair. Of course the truth is much murkier than that and Wahlberg uncovers the expected nest of corruption and double-dealing.

It should be great, but the story is too simplistic and Whalberg’s “personal journey” keeps getting in the way. But Crowe and Zeta-Jones shine and there are some nice touches.

has three great main performances (and Thin Ice some enjoyable minor ones) but seems tonally lost at times.

Word that the director was removed, 15 minutes cut and a new score inserted point to possible problems. In a scenario reminiscent of the Coen Brothers’ Fargo, Greg Kinnear is a Mid-Western insurance salesman, pretty much a full-on cheat and liar fallen on hard times. Escape is offered through a new client (irascible Alan Arkin) who unwittingly owns a valuable old violin. Conning ensues, complicated by the arrival of Billy Crudup’s eccentric and unpredictable security guy. Pleasant enough but hinting at more.

thriller, almost the equivalent of Zodiac’s precise investigative approach but with explosions and a big climactic ending.

Chastain is particularly impressive as the driven lead, carrying the film’s emotional weight, but questions still arise about the impression given that torture yielded useful results (denied - the results not the torture - by the CIA after the film’s release). And the film does show one suspect giving up information after torture. The problem is that there is no space here for the broader context – a thousand other innocents being tortured for no purpose.

The filmmakers quite rightly say they are just illustrating reality, but what you leave out is often just as important as what you show.

Oz: The Great and Powerful is a sort of prequel to The Wizard of Oz. It must have seemed like a good idea at the time and director Sam Raimi certainly has some fun with the design and some snappy visuals. But, fatally, the story of James Franco’s small-town magician, who finds himself transported to a magical land and embroiled in its problems after meeting three witches, founders on Franco’s weird performance.

Two of the witches (Rachel Weiss and Michelle Williams) are good but the whole thing lacks depth and feels off-kilter despite some imaginative setpieces.

Despite the genre’s chronic overexposure, Cockneys Vs shows there are still fresh paths to Zombies explore on the undead’s seemingly unstoppable wobble towards world domination. Snappily directed, with obvious Guy Ritchie nods, our heroes are a gang of gormless would-be bank robbers and the folk in a retirement home. The latter - with Alan Ford, Honor Blackman and Richard Briers leading the charge - prove a particular masterstroke, being that rare sector of the population immobile enough to be threatened by zombies of the slow shuffling variety.

Funny, spirited, gory and sprinkled with absurd rhyming slang – a gem amongst the knock-offs.

Crafty exhibition returns with bargains A show bringing quirky and traditional New Zealand-made crafts to Tauranga for 23 years is set to return for three more days at ASB Arena this weekend.

Beginning today, exhibitors from across the country will display “every craft imaginable” at Dunkley’s Great New Zealand Craft Show.

Show director Fiona Dunkley says while they allow some imported craft supplies and kit sets, all ready-made crafts must be New Zealand-made.

“Our shows give the craftspeople the opportunity to sell their work direct to the public, in a warm, well-lit and friendly shopping environment.

“Many of our exhibitors live out in the country and find our shows the best way to get their work in front of the public. They love meeting with people and showing them what they do.”

The power of thanksgiving Psalm 100 is called a “Psalm for thanksgiving and for the thank offering”.

In verse 4, God's people are called to enter His gates, the doorway into His presence, with thanksgiving; and to enter His courts with praise, to give thanks and to bless His holy name.

Elsewhere in the Psalms, we read about the sacrifice of thanksgiving – that which is our offering of thanksgiving to God. The psalmist in Psalm 147:7 speaks about singing to the Lord with thanksgiving.

This principle of offering up our declarations of thanksgiving to God is continued in specific detail in the New Testament.

Paul says in Philippians 4:6: “Do not be anxious about anything” and then he instructs us what to do instead.

He says: “But in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God”. Colossians 2:7 & 8 speak to us as those who have received Christ to “walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving”. So, our thanksgiving is not to be given to God begrudgingly – instead, we are to be “abounding in thanksgiving”.

We read an astounding truth in

1 Thessalonians 5:18 where Paul instructs us to “give thanks in all circumstances”. Not just in the good times, not just when life seems to be going well, not just when circumstances appear positive, but in all circumstances. That is, give thanks when the battle is most intense, when it seems that everything is against you, when you are struggling to keep your head above water. If that isn't significant enough, Paul adds: “For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you”.

Friends, it is so easy to grumble and murmur and complain; and to focus on the battle and to have a pity party.

A whole generation perished in the wilderness because of their murmuring against God and because of their disobedience. God's Word says to you and to me: “Enter His gates with thanksgiving in your heart, bring a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord and sing to the Lord with thanksgiving in your heart”. We are exhorted to pray with thanksgiving and to be abounding in thanksgiving. In all situations, give thanks to the God who redeemed you by the blood of His own Son, who called you out of darkness into His glorious light, who now calls you His son or His daughter – “for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you”.

We are ably aided in this, sometimes awful, task by the council, building inspectors and lawyers.

Potential issues

Now don’t crack open the bubbly while the ink dries on the contract ... that is just step one guys.

Leaky homes and building materials, of potential issue, have changed the perimeters of inspections. A pass is getting harder to gain.

Even our standard sale and purchase offer document carries a requirement for a building inspection.

These inspections may be as scary as a visit to the dentist. Lurking unseen, unless by x-ray or invasive testing (ouch), may lie defects.

Dodging fault

The language of building inspection reports is by necessity full of possible future scenarios and potential failings. Why? Because the council and the building industry have big bills, and so everyone wants to dodge future fault. (Including me!)

So don’t be surprised to find a scary bedtime read – and in some cases – a horror story. The trick is to interpret and understand either remedial or preventive action. And here Mortgagee Auction we real estate sales people again pass on to experts, who themselves want to run for cover.
