Saving planet from planet savers Global warming has been cancelled due to lack of interest.

It’s official. We’ve declared it over. The science is questionable, the motives are dodgy. Even if all the carbon buggerising worked, it would not save enough to alter a jot of world warming.

So someone has to say it. We have officially declared the game over and Al Gore and his mates can be put out to pasture.

The Greens, politicians and the old ladies everywhere who have been feverishly counting their carbon footprints can relax. You all meant well, but the whole idea is simply a skewed commie conspiracy to extract money and gain power.

At least this is the message I’m taking from Lord Christopher Monckton, who achieved at least two remarkable feats in Tauranga this week: 1. Made more sense of the global warming debate in one night than all the other tripe we’ve been fed all decade.

2. Managed to get 200 Tauranga people away from their tellies on a weeknight to fill a room at the prehistoric Bureta hotel to hear him speak.

So it’s up to you. Make your own decisions.

The world has been warming and cooling in cycles for millions of years without any help from us. We should be reducing burning of fossil fuels and other dirty energy for the right reasons: Such as pollution reduction, and conserving a finite resource.

The point that turns most NZers is having yet another tax foisted upon them. A tax that penalises every facet of our lives, and no one can show us where it goes. Adding to the insult – the world’s largest emitters are not playing the game; and carry out belching emissions till the cows come home.

There are still a lot of folk with the wool firmly pulled over their eyes.

Commie scam

We admire your commitment and concern for the environment, but it is misplaced and unfortunately, part of a larger scam that has suckered a lot of influential people. You’ll notice they will be particularly reluctant to give up the game – it’s hard to save face when you’ve been proven horribly wrong.

But don’t just take my word for it. I’ve been rabbitting about it for years with few science

qualifications at the end of my name, other than LMAO and WTF. But a bit of CS (common sense) has been applied and thanks to visiting Lord Monckton, the fable has been debunked by someone with some credentials and has bothered to investigate.

We’ve kept an open mind and an objective viewpoint on the global warming debate. After hearing Monckton, it’s reinforced the suspicion that giant foobie woobies have been inflicted on the world and Gore’s house of cards is crumbling.

No matter which side of the carbon fence you sit, every Kiwi should hear what Monckton has to say.

No harm in considering both points of view, is there? Unless, of course, you don’t want the truth exposed and are trying to indoctrinate the population with a lie.

So in future, we’ll have to keep Jim Hickey under better control.

Speaking of travel, Hairy Maclary has made it to China.

Tertiary Education, Skills, Employment and Most Other Things Minister Steven Joyce launched the Chinese language version of the New Zealand children’s book Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy, at an education event in Shanghai.

The Hairy Maclary series, first published in 1983, has sold more than nine million copies worldwide.

We hope Maclary did not stop over in Samoa, as some of the island’s politicians are attempting to rid the country of stray dogs.

Samoa’s Parliament debated the Canine Control Bill when the idea of exporting dog meat was raised.

Minister Toeafoa Faafisi reckons: “We can use the meat as a fertiliser for plants or even food or something else like a sausage.”

Brings new meaning to the term “sausage dog”.

Ranking rejected A league table of councils, which ranks Tauranga and Western Bay poorly for financial management, has been rejected by the mayors.

The Local Government League Table, just released by local government financial analyst Larry Mitchell, ranks Western Bay Council 58 of all 67 district councils (down from 42 last year), while Tauranga comes in at 48 (down from 32). Larry rates the councils’ debt levels as unsustainable saying the councils were not making much effort to control debt, but both mayors reject the table as inaccurate and say their finances are fine. “They do not go anywhere near telling the full story. They lack the full context of our particular circumstances,” says Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby.

Stuart accepted that Tauranga does have a high debt level of $400 million as a “consequence of putting in infrastructure to cater for our growth”, but says the assessment did not take into account changes to control finances made by council.

He says all councils experiencing high growth – including Auckland, Hamilton, Western Bay of Plenty and Queenstown Lakes District had high levels of per capita debt to pay for infrastructure. Western Bay of Plenty Mayor Ross Paterson rejects the assessment his council’s high debt levels were unsustainable, saying debt was the council’s preferred approach to pay for infrastructure including three water and five waste water stations.

“We do not like to place the debt costs on the present ratepayers, we

believe it’s only fair that it’s shared by everyone it benefits.”

Ross says his council debt of $150 million will be kept at the same level over the next four years before being paid down to $110 million over the next six years.

“Debt is very much part of the way forward. It’s just a matter of how you are performing and we believe we are doing fine.”

Larry says the debt levels need to be reined in and encourages residents to use the annual plan submission process, open now, to call for action.

“I suggest that finance has to be the number one priority for both of those plans, I would encourage them to look at the league tables and to ask some ‘please explain’ questions.”

Stuart says Tauranga has made a “significant step change” in finances during the past four years to bring costs down and now has a debt of $400 million.

Changes include cutting the forward works programme, selling property and restructuring council.

Prole pleads guilty to wife’s murder

Tauranga builder Rex Leverett John Prole has this week admitted to murdering his wife outside her home in Judea last year.

Brookfield teacher aid Robyn Prole, also known as Robyn Phipps, was found dead in the driveway of her Bell Street home. A post-mortem found the 57-year-old died of stab wounds.

Rex Leverett John Prole, 65, appeared in Rotorua High Court this week where he pleaded guilty to the murder of his former wife.

The couple had previously separated following an incident in April last year and Robyn had since taken out a protection order against Prole.

On July 20 Robyn went to the house to collect her mail when Prole attacked her with a kitchen knife.

Prole was remanded for sentencing on May 23.

Prison van collides with crane

A 49-year-old Tauranga woman broke her spine when a prison van and a crane collided near Katikati this week. Emergency services were called to the crash at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Work Road just after 4pm on Tuesday.

The woman prisoner was being escorted to a prison in Auckland when the crash happened.

Acting traffic senior sergeant Wayne Hunter says the van was passing the crane when it turned to enter a drive on the right hand side of SH2 about 30m south of Work Road.

Pilot Bay boardwalk confirmed

Construction on the Pilot Bay boardwalk could start before the end of the month after councillors gave it the go ahead this week.

The boardwalk’s alignment has been changed to stick close to the road along the Salisbury Avenue end to preserve the larger grassed areas.

Council also approved paying for a new storage shed for the waka ama club, next to where the waka are kept on the foreshore. Staff will continue to discuss beach replenishment with the port company.

Drug bust nets 99

More than 20,000 cannabis plants have been destroyed and 99 people have been arrested in a four week crackdown on drug growers throughout the Bay. During a period of four weeks police undertook 169 search warrants in rural and urban areas netting drugs, cash, firearms and stolen property. In the Western Bay of Plenty police executed 45 search warrants and arrested 44 people.

At one rural Welcome Bay address police recovered $13,000 in cash and methamphetamine.

Originally started for the elderly on Sundays, the station now operates from 10am-4pm seven days a week, with special programmes from 4-5pm Monday to Friday.

David runs a jazz programme each Thursday – playing everything from original pieces to 1980’s tunes – and following on from the recent Jazz Festival, he feels the station needs further recognition and aid in the community.

“We are an entity at the village and we feel we’re an entity in the township but that’s as far as it goes, nobody seems to know who we are.”

About 20 volunteer announcers and technicians run the station, some having been there since its beginning.

They rely on donations, which are few and far between, to meet $700 in monthly rent, as well as power, phone and licensing costs.

“We rely mainly on donations. There are so many people wanting grants, we seem to be at the bottom of the ladder.

“All in all, the outcome is more

than the income.”

David says the radio has 100-150 listeners, mostly elderly, who enjoy listening to their classic playlists.

“They sit by the radio and they get a tremendous kick from listening to the music of their years. Rather than the modern stuff nobody understands and you can whistle too.

“We play tunes form the war years and the ‘Charleston’, that type of lovely music.”

Village Radio broadcasts on 1368mHz on the AM band but if more money becomes available, an FM station may be possible, says David.

Tauranga City Council spokesperson Marcel Currin says he is not aware the Village Radio has ever approached Council for specific funding.

“They are treated the same as every other tenant at the Village.”

Rudd’s restaurant reopens One of Tauranga’s most high profile restaurants owned by ACDC drummer Phil Rudd has reopened to the public after closing for winter.

Tauranga Bridge Marina restaurant Phil’s Place reopened this week with a new head chef and team who management say will provide “exquisite food and exceptional service”.

The harbourside venue closed in July last year during what representatives said was a “quiet period”. For the re-opening, the rock-star fitted out restaurant has undergone a menu makeover under the direction of three head chefs: Vonnie, Greta and Marcio. Vonnie is returning to Tauranga after a decade in Europe, while Marcio has been in the region for the past six

years and has as much of a passion for cooking, as he does surfing. Greta is excited to join the team and is looking forward to presenting fresh, comfortable food. Joining the management team are Penny and Jo who originally established the Bluebiyou at Papamoa.

Phil, who first purchased the restaurant in August 2011, says the changes to the restaurant have been months in the making with a focus now on more casual dining.

“The original vision remains and diners will enjoy the same experiences, but with a more extensive menu at affordable prices.”

From a bundle of bamboo, old cardboard boxes and house paint, a group of Fairhaven School pupils fashioned the homemade boats they raced around Pilot Bay this week.

The seven boats – which included two doublehulled catamarans – all successfully paddled a small Pilot Bay circuit, with only one exiting early after one loop because it was taking on water.

Year 5-6 teacher Liz Logan says it was great to see the students successfully launch their boats in what was the culmination of a nine week project on flotation. “The whole experience was absolutely

fantastic. When we started nine weeks ago they thought it was impossible.”

Along with learning about boat design and flotation, Liz says the project had built on the children’s team work and scientific skills.

“They have done quite a bit of research and predicted which boats would do well and which were likely to take on water – and they were all pretty close with their predictions.” Liz says coats of paint helped temporarily seal the cardboard boats against the water.

“It was not going to last forever but it lasted long enough. It was such a success we will definitely do it again, but probably not for another two years.”

Principal role for dancer Katikati-raised Ty King-Wall is getting a big break in the Australian Ballet being named the youngest ever principal artist for the company.

The 26-year-old dancer was named the 12th principal in the ballet in what some say is a surprise move by director David McAllister.

The artistic director made the announcement to the Sydney Opera House crowd during curtain call for the performance of Don Quixote on Saturday.

“Ty is a born prince and has been a dancer that has shone brightly in all of his performances across our broad repertoire,” says David.

“It’s always exciting to see a dancer whose hard work, intelligence and talent have paid off and Ty has displayed all of those characteristics throughout his career.”

Sitting in-house to watch the performance at the weekend were Ty’s parents Sue and Kevin who had travelled from Katikati especially for the occasion.

“We were incredibly proud. It’s been a long journey and he has worked hard for it.”

It was doubly special for Ty’s father as it was the first time he had watched his son perform professionally.

“It’s the first time he has been over since he graduated ballet school in 2005.”

Ty, who was homeschooled, left the New Zealand School of Dance for the Australian Ballet School at the age of 16, after the community rallied behind him to

raise the funds.

“The community really got behind him - we couldn’t afford the international fees,” says Sue. Rising through the ranks he has quickly become a success on the Australian ballet circuit, securing a spot in the Australian Ballet directly out of ballet school in 2006.

“He has travelled a lot.

The Australian Ballet has been very supportive of him.

“He had a back injury a few years ago and they were great with the rehab and supported him through it.”

Based in Melbourne, the company travels for six months of the year, performing two main seasons in Sydney, as well as an international and national tour.

Nappy Lady’s successful nationwide mission Katikati’s Nappy Lady says her 10 day nationwide tour to support International Cloth Nappy Week, which ended in Tauranga yesterday, has been “absolutely huge”. Thousands of mothers greeted Kate Meads on her promotional journey, helping encourage the use of cloth nappies instead of throwaways.

“We’ve seen unbelievable numbers, people have loved it and we’ve had so much fun,”

says Kate. Her ‘Mums Secret’ team began on April 1, two members short, but managed to hide nappies in towns from Whangarei to Queenstown to share benefits of using the eco-friendly alternative.

“We’ve been met on the roadside by people giving us cupcakes and a lady in Christchurch did my washing for me.”

Prizes totalling $50,000 were given away and more than 700 cloth nappies were

hidden. Kate says the cloth nappy message was well-received with mothers being excited to try them.

“A big thing when mums look at purchasing cloth nappies is the cost – they see it as a barrier so we’re trying to overcome it by showing how much they save by investing in one of these nappies. Kate says using one cloth nappy each day stops 365 nappies going to landfill per baby per year.

Funding available year-round Community groups seeking funding for environmental projects can soon apply for funding year-round, after a change to Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s Environmental Enhancement Fund.

From July 1, the previously contestable funding system held at a set time each year will be replaced with an open season funding round – enabling groups to apply for grants at any time.

The Operations, Monitoring and Regulation Committee endorsed the changes, which support projects targeting water quality and habitats, enhancing streams, lakes, harbours and

Police dogs’ agility and skill at chasing and catching people wanted by police will be on display at Tauranga SPCA’s Pet and Family Fun Day this weekend.

The dog display at 1pm is a highlight at the free event at Historic Village from 10am-2pm on Saturday.

Fundraising and marketing manager Dorothy Forbes says dogs on leads are welcome to join in.

The SPCA is also celebrating following the donation of a lawnmower from Mitre 10 to help keep the newly landscaped grounds looking smart at the Greerton shelter.

Tauranga Mitre 10 manager Wayne Mansell gifted the lawnmower to help maintain the grounds in the new garden area and Dorothy is “thrilled”.

“This is a wonderful gift for the SPCA to use in their garden area which has recently been landscaped with plants which have been kindly donated by members of the public.

“These grounds will be a wonderful asset for the dogs to be walked in and for prospective new owners meeting the dogs they are interested in adopting.”

Dorothy says the new building, made possible with a grant from TECT, has provided a new hygienic surrounding for the increasing number of animals arriving daily at the shelter.

Medici bros for Dive Crescent A block wall facing a Dive Crescent carpark will be the first site of 15 huge paintings to celebrate renaissance art around Tauranga city.

Tauranga artist Owen Dippie begins the first painting this month and is expected to be working during the school holidays, weather permitting.

The works are being done under the patronage of The City Centre Action Group, a partnership of city business and tourism promotion organisations.

The first painting will depict the Medici brothers, based on the statues of Giuliano de’ Medici, Duke of Nemours, and Cappelle Medicee, San Lorenzo, Florence. The statues were carved by Michelangelo in Florence between 1520 and 1534.

“It’s definitely an interpretation,” says project manager Anne Pankhurst. “You will definitely recognise the Medici brothers, who were leaders of commerce and banking in Italy.

“We’ve agreement for up to 15 paintings across the city but no actual agreement on what they look like at this point. We are starting in the renaissance period but it could move into anything. We could end up telling our own stories. Who knows where that journey will carry us. It’s pretty open-ended and flexible. The whole idea is the project remains quite flexible. Owen paints in aerosols, and large scale. An example of his work is the Goldie reproduction on the wall facing the Masonic Park.

The renaissance period describes 300 years between the 14th and 15th centuries where artists incorporated a greater sense of light and colour through new mediums, and when using perspective to create, a sense of space was developed.

The city council, which has endorsed the project, will pay $2200 for graffiti-guarding of the first painting and provide the wall.

“Groups are encouraged to apply for the amount of funding required for their project, whether it is $5000, $10,000 or $25,000.”

The fund has distributed more than $7.5million to almost 500 environmental projects in the Bay since its establishment in 2000.

Te Awaroa o Kahu Kapa Haka group coordinator Maringi Ngata-Campbell says everyone is getting very excited about performing at the three-day annual ‘Gathering of Nations Powwow’ in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“We are the only group from outside North America going to perform, the only group from New Zealand – they have had bands from NZ previously performing including Ardijah, but this is the first kapa haka group.”

Maringi was inspired to organise the trip to the Native American performance festival

after attending personally herself two years ago. She describes the event - which attracts groups from throughout Canada and the US - as the equivalent of New Zealand’s annual kapa haka championships Te Matatini.

But she quickly adds that while the group has been training hard to prepare, for many of the group which includes 20 adults and eight children connected with the Wairoa Marae – it will be their first performance on stage.

“It’s not like Matatini groups that have a strong base in performing regionally. We are pretty excited to be going over not only to represent our marae, and our iwi but the whole of Aotearoa New Zealand pretty much.”

Maringi says part of the appeal to attend was to build on a connection the marae’s hapu has with Native American people after hosting a visit by a group 10 years ago.

With about 5000 converging at the powwow, competing in categories from children right through to elders, it will be a great chance to reconnect with many people. This is the first time we’ve taken a group from our marae back over there to reconnect with them.”

Maringi says it has been full-on since suggesting they attend the powwow, with everyone tied up with practising and raising about $2000 each for costs during the past six months. Fundraising has also been supported by donations from Maori groups.

“We are hoping that this is something positive we can look to do as a biennial event for the hapu, to give them a glimpse of the outside world beyond the little area where we live around the marae.”

Nice work if you can get it!

Following up on the consultants’ cost of the reorganisation of city hall staff structures and the CCO review, I met with CEO Leigh Auton and Mayor Stuart Crosby with the purpose of the CEO explaining the detail (or lack of it) on the invoices.

Morrison Low, consultants on the structure, was paid $155,263 (excl GST) for the organisational review and $145,036 for the CCO review.

Included in this was $12,512.16 of expenses variously listed as accommodation, mileage, taxis, flights, sustenance – but with few details and no accompanying vouchers.

The CEO explained that it was his normal practise to pay such invoices along with the invoice for professional fees, again, with few details such as hours charged and charge out rate.

My concerns revolve around transparency and accountability.

Elected members are (quite rightly) subject to extreme scrutiny from staff, audit and the media – and I see no reason why this same scrutiny shouldn’t be applied across the organisation. But it is the CEO’s call and I have no input (by legislation) into how he conducts the operation.

Likewise, with GHD, consultants on human resource structure.

They were paid $211,149 excl GST of which $14, 859.92 was for travel, accommodation, mileage.

Again, few details were given and no accompanying vouchers. It seems the going rate for the principal consultant is around $250 per hour. Another consultancy HR2Go have billed $102,733.34 for services relating to recruitment for senior positions (four general managers). Again, I emphasise that all this is under the sole control of the CEO. Elected members have no input (by legislation), and had I not requested the invoices, I would never have come to know.

In the course of the discussion I asked the cost of the CEO appointment process and was told it was over $100,000 also. The CEO told me that the city would receive great value from all this expense and the future was very exciting. I certainly hope that this is correct. Leigh Auton finishes as CEO Friday, April 12 and Garry Poole starts as new CEO on Monday, April 15. It is Garry who will inherit all this expense, advice and structure – although he has been involved in the appointment process for the four general managers.

This example highlights how the Local Government Act has rendered politicians powerless. By passing all control to one person (the chief executive) in my view it significantly reduces detailed, political background knowledge of what is really going on and what the real costs are. Chief executives needed some protection from politicians in the past but there needs to be a balance (by legislation) for politicians to have high level input into operations. When I was first elected, one councillor was delegated each month to go through that month’s voucher payments.

It was a time-consuming task, not enjoyed by many councillors but it kept you up to date on costs and was a check on how expenditure was conducted. But all this stopped under the so-called Local Government “reforms”.

Never ending saga

At Projects and Monitoring, the design for the never ending Pilot Bay boardwalk saga was decided.

A good crowd was in the chamber to listen to speakers and subsequent debate. The Mounties are a passionate group and elected members heard ideas and advice in the public speaking forum. The decision is that the boardwalk will stay behind the trees where possible from Salisbury Avenue, come out

around the toilets and meander on down to the boat ramp.

The existing waka gear storage shed will go and be replaced with a narrow shed at right angles to the road and be relocated near to where the waka are stored.

Construction of the walkway/cycleway along the Papamoa stormwater reserve will continue albeit with some design and route alterations.

A petition objecting to the construction turned out to be more an objection to where the path went rather than the fact it was there, so the petitioners told elected members.

Public art project

A larger than life public art project by local (extremely talented) public artist Owen Dippie will proceed on a vote 10-1 with Catherine Stewart not supporting.

Committee members were promised that there would be no extra ratepayer funding required. Owen did the Goldie replica on the wall of Bronco’s Sports in Masonic Park downtown. The plan is for 15 murals around town. Council will contribute the cost of what a standard paint job would be on council-owned buildings and other organisations will raise the rest.

Owen’s work is sensational and this initiative will give yet another lift to the CBD. It’s back to the drawing board with Tsunami sirens. Elected members were told – to cut a long story short – that it would not be possible to provide the required sound over the required distance at anywhere near the estimated cost. This council will push for a national standard so that everyone around NZ, not only those living on the coast, will recognise a tsunami siren. Sirens have limitations and are only part of a warning system. This exercise has cost ratepayers around $850,000 over three years according to staff.

The world of local government is changing. Government expects local government to deliver local services in the most cost effective way .There are reorganisation proposals from the Hawkes Bay and Northland lining up for consideration by the local government commission, and we can expect more as local government looks at how to best serve regional communities.

The Regional Council has built into its 10 year plan targets for savings no less than $250,000pa. However, the organisation is undertaking efficiency reviews across all functional groups and I would expect there will be more efficiencies while ensuring we do what we have to do well. We continue to be a part of the BOPLASS venture: a 9 council-controlled company delivering savings in sharing back office functions.

Whilst all this is happening we have some key projects to focus on this year.

They include the Tauranga Harbour, Rotorua Lakes, Fresh Water Management including River Scheme sustainability.

The Tauranga Harbour is a programme of integrated works across many work streams of the Council.

The work will focus on the protection of the harbour waters from stock and sedimentation, reforesting steep erodible slopes and protecting wetlands and native forest areas.

Comment confusion

Contrary to a report in the Bay Times I was not “offended” by a comment from Catherine Stewart and I did not say I was. Someone else did say the comment was offensive. Catherine, speaking during the boardwalk debate accused unnamed elected members of having a “secret squirrel” meeting.

Mayor Stuart Crosby called a point of order which, as chairman, I am required to rule on. Stuart said there had been no secret meetings. As Catherine couldn’t substantiate her accusation the point of order was upheld. Upon a ruling, it is protocol that the comment be withdrawn which Catherine eventually did after spirited encouragement from some councillors. It may appear a trivial point but the Bay Times should get its facts right – after all they can go online and listen to the recorded debate to check.

Wayne Moultrie raised the issue of commercial “boot camp” exercise routines being conducted on the cenotaph at the Mount at 6.30am. A complainant, who rang Wayne, had been told by the commercial “boot camp operator” to “go away” when the complainant remonstrated with him. This was an inappropriate use of the cenotaph and staff will take action to ensure that this use of the cenotaph ceases. These “boot camps” are run commercially and also cause some consternation to neighbours at that hour in the morning.

Working together is the way of the future Green economy in action The power of and scale of the new Auckland Council is causing other regions to look at how they do things.

For us in the Bay of Plenty, it is crucial that we establish a culture of long-term collaboration on significant strategic issues across the region and across the whole of the upper North Island.

Take the economic development space for example. We are fortunate that the Bay of Plenty has an overarching Bay of Connections economic development strategy, supported by individual strategies for various key sectors.

These individual strategies are industry-led and transcend district boundaries. However, while tourism was identified as a key sector for the Bay of Plenty, no tourism strategy has yet been developed for the region because there was not strong sector buy-in. There has been resistance to taking a regional approach to tourism because of a competitive attitude in tourism marketing – particularly between Tauranga and Rotorua.

This seems such a shame to me. For example, Australia continues to be New Zealand's most important market in terms of visitor numbers, and Tourism New

Zealand forecasts are for Australian visitor arrivals to reach 1.64 million in 2018.

Australian visitors tend to be “free independent travellers” which means they fly in and drive themselves around - they don’t just come to visit one destination unless they are here for a specific reason.

The key is to work with other destinations to become part of a compelling story to choose New Zealand, and within this, encourage visitors to choose destinations in the central North Island and the Bay of Plenty. Working together to attract tourists means resources and value propositions can be leveraged to have greater pulling power.

Go figure

For readers who missed last week, Western Bay District Council was placed 58th out of 67 councils on a Local Government League Table after they were judged on their performance in handling debt, with respect to the ability of their ratepayers to pay. They were listed with ten other councils at the bottom of the table who were considered guilty of wasteful overspending and maladministration.

Last year, the poorly performing councils complained that such a table was simplistic and that there were other factors that had to be taken into account.

Western Bay has already insisted that there is good debt and bad debt. Last year, it was revealed council debt equated to about $2300 per person in the district and about $7200 per ratepayer.

Our good infrastructure debt this year is $105million out of a total debt of more than $150million.

The south Waikato is undergoing a sea change right now.

Amid all the angst over water quality, industry failure, forest-dairy conversions, and depressed townships, there is a bright light.

In the greater Tauranga area we have several proposed cycle/walkways, including a boardwalk for Pilot Bay and an ambitious scheme to link Waihi and Te Puke.

All would contribute to tourism in a variety of ways, along with improving amenity value for locals and creating user-friendly access through our communities.

In contrast to south Waikato, our proposals are encountering community resistance.

Some of the perceived threats (such as graffiti and disruptive behaviour) will need managing. But that can be achieved and should not be used to block the development of assets with obvious economic, social and environmental benefits.

It is great to see initiatives that promote such outcomes. This is the green economy in action.

Postscript

The Sun attached Simon Bridges’ comments on the crime rate to Green Scene last week. Some readers were a little surprised at the apparent support given to National in that column. However, we support Simon’s conclusion that evidence of a declining crime rate is good news.

Bay of Plenty debt repayment ‘wishful thinking’ Good debt, in this case, refers to intergenerational infrastructure debt which means that the water system that supplies the water you are drinking today is to be paid by you for the rest of your life, by your children and even by your grandchildren.

This version of ‘paying on the never-never’ was implemented to cope with the ‘high levels of growth experienced in the Bay and the absence of any reserves for infrastructure. The debt is to be cleared over the years by a combination of rates, user charges and financial contributions’.

These are all charges on ratepayers. This form of debt repayment is wishful thinking because many of the debts that have been identified, like those of Omokoroa and Waihi Beach, are actually rising.

Despite the rates and targeted rates inflicted each year, council has not even been paying off interest on the

There is of course another option open to council.

They can blame SmartGrowth.

This evil organisation took over planning in the Bay of Plenty and our council could portray itself as a victim. If SmartGrowth is treated as a sacrificial goat, Western Bay will be left with a council that not only has no money, it will be a council with absolutely no forward-planning capability. SmartGrowth was set up to help councils spend future income wisely. They haven’t. All council needs to do is rename SmartGrowth the ‘Smart Recovery’ and go to work.

Boating with the boys and another wild goose chase We’ve been warming up for the hunting season with a few pre-season away-games.

This week the harbour was nice and flat on pegging out day, so the ride in the punt was a joy.

Riding on the foredeck with our ears flapping in the sea breeze and nostrils flaring was all good, till a little spitball of dribble from my flapping jowls curled around the slipstream and sloshed across the boss’ sunnies.

A few choice words were spat back into the sea breeze, I can tell you.

We had a ball on the beach, gathering up seaweed into an old sailbag for Mrs Boss’ vege garden.

First up was a wild goose chase with the chaps in boats. We love going in the boat.

Any boat will do. The boss bundled us into the crusty, trusty duck boat – the one with the flat bottom that rattles and thumps across the harbour so much that we have to hold our eyeballs in with our paws.

It’s always worth it, because there’s usually a wild bird or a fish, or even a run on a beach at the end of it.

It all ended on a high note, with a few geese in the drink, and two keen dogs putting all our retrieving practice to good use.

We did a perfect double dive off the foredeck and rounded them up, no worries. Only trouble was, those big old Canadas are so darn heavy, it took two of us in full-throttle dog paddle mode to drag the beasts to the boat.

Well, actually Ady did most of the work, but I did some pretty impressive circling while she snapped German precision instructions.

It was a big day on the water, and the boss had brought along a flash new bean bag for our ride home.

He was not impressed that the two dogs preferred to settle down for a nap together… on the mouldy old sailbag full of seaweed!

Ah well, there’s no accounting for taste. Maybe it will improve with age.. and some smelly seaweed.

A great day out, another reminder of the paradise on our back door step.

Innovating for success Secondary students around the Western Bay are being encouraged to put their imagination to work with a call for entries to the Young Innovator Awards.

The product development competition, launched last year

by Priority One’s Instep team, aims to encourage creativity and innovation among Western Bay students.

But as last year’s junior section winner Aidan Winch has discovered – creative ideas do not always come when you ask for them.

As a Mount Maunganui College Year 10 student, Aidan won the top junior prize for his smart asthma inhaler which warns you when it is getting low.

But this time round, the Year 11 student is scratching his head for a fresh idea.

He is turning to the advice he has been giving others – to have

a big imagination and look for problems to solve.

“It’s about looking for problems in the world and seeing what you can do to fix them,” says Aidan.

The industry and schools partnership has expanded the competition this year to include a category for people under 40.

Work on the Papamoa cycle track may resume next week after some Royal Palm Beach Estate residents failed to stop the project this week.

A petition was received by the Projects and Monitoring Committee on Monday, where councillors agreed to review the planned three metre wide gravel cycle track’s

alignment. Residents suggested the track be shifted to the Southern side of the drain along the stormwater reserve.

They also think it could be aligned further from properties because they say past actual flood levels have been lower than what is allowed for by council staff.

Work on the track may resume next week. It was halted when the petition was organised.

Not all Royal Palm Beach estate residents supported the petition. A council survey of residences within 300m of the reserve saw 67 per cent in favour of the track being gravelled to prevent it bogging in winter.

three days before Easter, but has no input at all from the area’s cycling clubs or walking groups.

Concerns about the quiet ambience are the same Nimby argument constantly being trotted out to resist all community initiatives, says Henry.

“No doubt they figured in the arguments against building children’s playgrounds some years ago, says Henry. “If a petitioner wishes

to live in the country with no neighbours he should do so.”

The objectors chose to buy properties adjoining the public reserve and right of way, and are now seeking to gain at the public expense, says Henry.

Gravelling the track through the stormwater reserve between Hartford Avenue and Gravatt Rd has been on the plan since 2006.

Celebrations marking the centennial of the establishment of the upper and lower Kaimai Schools are on next weekend at the Kaimai School.

The Kaimai district was not settled by Pakeha until after 1900, though Ngati Kahu and Ngati Raukura have occupied the area of the old Kaimai Village at Ongaonga, near Soldiers Rd, since well before European arrival.

Most of the district was Maori land up to the 1880s, when much of it was sold to European speculators, including the British-based Thames Valley Land Company, which bought large areas near the Kaimai summit and in the Waikato toward Putaruru.

Following the completion of a road linking the Kaimai and Tauranga with the Waikato in 1911, settlers began to arrive in the area and a petition for the Education Department to provide a school was launched.

Kaimai No.1 School in the upper Kaimai, near the present lower end of Old Kaimai Rd, opened on February 10, 1913 – with a roll of 12 pupils, just two of them boys.

In 1920, Kaimai No.2 School opened at lower Kaimai, near the present Ngamuawahine bridge, with a roll of 14 – nine girls and five boys.

Kaimai No.1 School was built and opened in 1913 with 12 students.

This school soon closed but reopened in 1931. It was later replaced by a new school on the existing site in 1954.

A few years later in 1958, Kaimai No.1 School closed, and the present school is now known simply as Kaimai School.

Next weekend, past pupils, staff, board and committee members, residents, and anyone interested are welcome to attend

Kaimai No.2 School burned down in 1974 and was replaced by the present school. the centennial celebrations, and learn more of the schools’ histories.

Saturday will be a ‘by registration’ occasion, with lunch supplied and a reunion dinner and dance in the evening.

Brunch on Sunday morning will be available for those who have registered.

Discovering the healthy trails A Lion’s fundraising project could see up to 5000 Western Bay residents out discovering Tauranga’s many great walkways if organisers have their wish.

The project, which will raise money for the Cancer Society’s Lions Lodge in Hamilton, aims to get thousands of people out on four separate trails. All four ‘Discover Tauranga Walkways’ events are on Sunday May 19, with something for all abilities from a competitive team run to walks aimed at the whole family, through to an easy flat track suited for those with disabilities.

Organiser Ray Smith says it is the first time all 12 clubs from Te Puke to Bethlehem have joined forces on one project, something he attributes to the positive health focus of encouraging walking.

“It’s an exciting project that is aiming to get people out discovering the great walkways on their doorstep and encourage them to get active.”

Ray wants to see as many people take part as possible, whether it is for a whole walk or just part, and says with two months until the event everyone has time to prepare.

He says the 5km flat walk from Fergusson Park to Harbour Drive is ideal for people with disabilities or anyone ‘not so mobile’.

In keeping with the emphasis on encouraging more people to walk, the project includes three fun walks – along the harbour, through Waipuna Park and Welcome Bay (5km) and the Daisy Hardwick track (9km).

A competitive 65km run around the city perimeter is another option offered, with hopes of attracting up to 100 teams to take part in the nine-stage circuit.

Antony, who has been painting since he was a young child, is this year’s feature artist for the charity exhibition.

Winter made easier for those in need After six months’ hard work rebuilding their charity, Nik Gregg and Jo Wills are thrilled to be relaunching Tauranga’s Curtain Bank this week.

Curtain Bank is a charitable community service that re-uses curtains and provides them free of charge to families who can’t afford them.

and Jo Wills made re-establishing it a priority. Jo says spending winter without thermal curtains is a problem for many vulnerable families, leaving them exposed to draughts, winter chills and expensive heating bills.

“With the re-launch of Curtain Bank Tauranga, this will be one less problem for families to face once the cold weather sets in.

“Thermal curtains are a simple and effective step to take which makes the home cheaper and easier to heat. “Curtain Bank supports those most in need to be warmer over winter, use less energy and keeps a valuable resource out of landfill, this aligns with all the values of Social Ecology.”

Through a combination of donations, voluntary support and shear determination, Curtain Bank Tauranga is back up and running in a new home at The Hillier Centre in Mount Maunganui.

Supporting Curtain Bank Tauranga is local companies PowerSmart and Sustainability Options.

Jo says volunteer co-ordinator Shelley Clarke has been critical to the Curtain Bank’s revival, along with a list of individuals and organisations.

PowerSmart managing director Mike Bassett-Smith says supporting Curtain Bank was a no-brainer. “We share their vision of warmer, drier, healthier homes for all New Zealanders.”

Community partnership keeping wheels rolling Local charities can now spend less money on keeping their vehicles maintained and more on the delivery of their essential services, thanks to a recent collaboration between the Acorn Foundation and the BOP Polytechnic.

The organisations have teamed

together to give vehicles, owned by local charities, a service free of charge.

The servicing will be handled by second-year automotive and apprentice students operating out of the MTA-endorsed service centre at the polytechnic’s Win-

dermere campus with supervision from the polytechnic’s qualified staff. The arrangement also gives students the opportunity to work on some very different machinery.

Workshop manager Phil Lowe says the students are excited by this project.

Property: deciding who is responsible Where a landlord has installed a property with the equipment necessary to receive digital television, the Residential Tenancies Act 1986 places an obligation on the landlord to repair and maintain that equipment.

If a property is not equipped to receive digital television, or is equipped to receive only analogue television, it is unlikely that the landlord would have a responsibility to install the equipment required to receive digital TV. Tenants can install digital television equipment themselves If a property does not have the equipment required to receive digital television, then a tenant may wish to install the digital television equipment

themselves. However, as the equipment might be seen to be a fixture, the tenant must first seek permission from the landlord to install that equipment themselves. The landlord cannot unreasonably withhold that permission.

Before granting permission to install the equipment, it would be wise for both the landlord and tenant to agree on who owns the equipment, and who will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of it once it is installed.

As with any agreement, this should be recorded in writing.

It is also important to note that a tenant may remove any of their own fixtures at the end of a tenancy, provided it will not cause irreparable damage to the property. For this reason, a landlord may decide that they would prefer to install the required equipment themselves.

Food and lifestyle choices during autumn At this time of year when the weather is settled, daylight saving ends and there is a quiet stillness – lots of lifestyle choices are often made.

For me, it’s about continuing to exercise with walks up the Mount, Frisbee, golf, cycling and keeping things simple.

So this week I could be writing about a lot of various fruits and vegetables and how to use them in some recipe that inspires some and seems daunting to others. But instead I’m going to use ingredients that are available all year round, although smoked salmon is on special at the moment.

The good thing about the recipes is they taste great and you get some interesting combinations. Figs with blue cheese is one example. To catch up on previous recipes go to my Facebook page: facebook.com/liv-

enutrition. This week I have decided to call autumn “the season of texture and crunch” and my finger food of the moment is smoked salmon and brie wontons.

This is surprisingly affordable, simple

to make and can be frozen down ready to cook at short notice.

It is fabulous with cranberry sauce, quince paste or Asian-style plum sauce.

It is great to pull from the freezer and cook for a snack.

WONTONS

A passion for Arancini I just love rice balls: Arancini is what we call them in Italy. I like to use up any ham left over in the fridge along with Mozzeralla or Colby cheese. This one of those dishes you’ll be picking at even when you’re full! The great thing about Arancini you can make them in advance or freeze them.

Ingredients 3 cups long grain rice Cubes of Mozzarella or Colby cheese 3 slices of Bacon or Ham Frozen peas Salt and pepper 5 Tbsp parmesan grated 3 egg yolks and whites 1/2 cup breadcrumbs Method Cook the rice until soft, and add egg yolks, seasoning and parmesan and mix. Allow to cool.

Place two tablespoons of rice mix in your palm and flatten into a disc shape. Place a cube of cheese and some bacon/ham/peas in the centre and form into a ball. Dip in beaten egg white and then crumbs.

Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes then fry until golden. The fillings are endless, and these are fabulous served hot with our homemade tomato sauce.

Smoked salmon and brie wontons Approx 50

Filling 200g finely sliced smoked salmon 180g diced small brie cubes cracked black pepper 1 Tbsp chopped chives 1 lemon zest and juice 1 pkt of wonton wrappers oil for frying Method Mix all of the filling ingredients together in a bowl with your hands and mould together into a mass.

Lay out wonton pastry and place a small knob of the mixture in the bottom of one corner of the pastry square.

Form this into a crescent shape, completely enclosing the filling roll, until you have three corners looking like a wonton. Press two of the three corners together with a small dab of water.

Don’t worry too much, as long as you have enclosed the filling and it sort of looks like a wonton – it is hand made after all.

Continue making them until you’re sick of it or you’ve eaten or used up all the filling.

Freeze well, then shallow fry in hot oil at 170-180 degrees Celsius for three to four minutes until puffy. Drain on kitchen paper and serve hot.

in review Scrumptious birthday for Bay pie experts Food

While new flavours have joined old favourites – the impeccable taste has stayed the same at Maketu Pies.

The Bay of Plenty company is celebrating its 30th birthday this week with general manager James Wilson saying Maketu Pies has a pie to satisfy the palate of everyone.

James’ parents Karen and Grant Wilson began the business in April 1983 when he was three.

“My grandparents Nancy and Robert ‘Bob’ Wilson owned Maketu’s country store and they couldn’t get fresh pies delivered back then so they decided to make pies themselves in store.

“My father saw this as an opportunity and set up his own shop in Maketu and started making pies.”

Karen and Grant made the pies with family help but today the company employs 52 staff and sells Maketu pies in supermarkets, cafes, dairies and petrol stations nationwide.

James, who returned to the family business four

years ago, says the recipe for their mince pie hasn’t changed since day dot.

“We’ve had to adapt it slightly when ingredients have become unavailable but the recipe base is the same - the base of our pastry is also how we’ve always made it.”

Maketu Pies has introduced new flavours – being an industry leader with its smoked fish pie.

“We’re also known for our mussel pie and good quality pastry.”

It has a gourmet range of pies – including prime beef and blue cheese, and chicken, leek and tarragon flavours.

“Palates have changed and so has demand for what is in a pie – one of biggest sellers in New Zealand is butter chicken which is in our top five.”

Maketu Pies, where possible, still makes pies by hand “but machines help us produce high volumes”.

James wants to thank his staff, local communities and businesses for supporting Maketu Pies.

Couple’s store a cosy retreat for all After holidaying in Mount Maunganui for eight years, South African couple Bob and Verena Ricketts couldn’t help but fall in love with the seaside town.

Last year they made the decision to move here, and open their dream store: a relaxing photography gallery and café/bookstore offering a cosy escape from the cold in winter or a cool hub to relax with a novel in summer.

The walls are lined with thousands of quality preloved books selling for $4 or less, hand-picked china and knick knacks rotating on shelves weekly, and many of Bob’s professional photos hang from the walls.

Old Grumpy’s Gallery is like no other.

After 44 years of marriage, the pair have combined their passions for reading, music and photography and are working together for the first time to build Old Grumpy’s from the ground up.

With cosy couches, free Wifi, Fixation coffee and a slice from celebrity chef Sean Armstrong’s company Loaf – Mount locals have been flocking to the store.

“We thought let’s make it a place where people can relax. We’ll offer books and coffee, and people can come in to chill out, use the Wifi, that was the concept,” says Bob. “What’s been so rewarding for us is the interest from locals, we’re still tweaking the store but the welcome we have had has been fantastic.”

The books are purchased in bulk loads of 3000, and sell for $4 or less alongside beautiful crockery and collectables, dvds, music and art.

Bob, a professional photographer, also sells his work at affordable prices.

“We are living the dream here – we just want this to be someplace special for residents. They can have club meetings here, or just relax with a book, or browse the shelves for gifts – offering this place at a retreat – it’s what makes us happy.” Old Grumpy’s also donates to the New Zealand Arthritis Foundation and will re-sell purchased books and give the money to the foundation.

Bay authors’ books on display High quality books written by Bay of Plenty authors now have more exposure to rival their international competitors in seven bookstores in the region.

Bay publisher Oceanbooks has teamed up with PaperPlus to showcase the work of local authors.

Oceanbooks managing director Bryan Winters says they’re delighted with the agreement with Paperplus.

"Readers can now readily find quality books written by local authors conveniently placed in the seven PaperPlus stores. That may not sound too big a deal to the book-buying consumer but placing a title in a bookstore means

it competes for shelf space with the Jodi Piccoults and John Grishams of this world.

"Local writers all over the world find it’s difficult to gain public exposure even when they produce good work."

To put the deal into perspective, Bryan says traditional publishers in New Zealand are either getting rid of authors, or at best, launching one new unknown writer a year.

Oceanbooks launches 20 books annually.

The connection began when Oceanbooks caught the attention of Stuart Gunn, from the Te Puke PaperPlus, by inviting him to a book launch and launching 10 books.

Wanting to encourage local writers, Stuart phoned Bryan with an idea to set aside clearly marked space in all PaperPlus stores for locally-written books.

Oropi School’s long drive for lower speed a success After fighting for more than 10 years, Oropi School is finally getting a lower speed limit past the school and a new footpath following approval by Tauranga City Council.

The proposal by Oropi School to lower the speed limit past the school from 70km to 50km and create a new footpath was approved by TCC, which agrees both improvements will make the area safer for the children.

Although there have been no serious incidents outside the school Oropi School principal Andrew King says there has been plenty of near misses.

“It’s always been an issue the speed limit. A major concern is during the pickup and drop off times. We have parents who need to turn around on the road and it means they’re doing

Driving course not just for elderly As people age, their driving confidence and ability often diminishes – making driving a scary and unpleasant experience.

This is often the case for tourists, and international residents and learner drivers. Age Concern’s fun and interactive driving course is designed to build confidence and update knowledge so older drivers can stay safe on the roads. Now, they have opened the course to foreign drivers and learners in an effort to

make feeling comfortable and confident on the road easier for everyone.

A number of topics are addressed in the social, pressure-free course, including new road rules, intersection rules, roundabouts, car care and maintenance, and rural and urban driving. Course coordinator Jim Wilson says the course ensures participants are keeping their driving skills up-to-date and are aware of any changes to the Road Code. Jim also says if anyone is nervous about attending on their own they can bring a friend for support – just mention it when registering for the course.

Secondary issues such as weather conditions, eyesight and hearing checks, and how to use passing lanes are taught too, as are the effects of medications on driving. This free, theory-based course is perfect for people new to New Zealand who don’t yet feel comfortable with our way of driving, says Jim. The course runs from 9.20am to 1.30pm.

Andrew also requested a footpath be built from the school to the Oropi Community Hall where the children walk to almost every day for activities.

The school continued to approach council until Andrew says their submission was “thankfully” heard in 2011. Two years later Andrew says council has approved the school’s submissions.

Keeping motivation and enthusiasm At first, motivation is easy. You start a weight loss program and you’re brimming with motivation and enthusiasm.

There is often a rapid weight loss, followed by compliments and suddenly you are squeezing into outfits that have been

But as time goes by and the “honeymoon” period inevitably wanes, things get tough.

This is completely normal and it’s what you do next that counts.

Rediscovering your motivation can be the difference between success and staying exactly where you are. Start by writing a list of all the reasons you wanted to lose weight initially. Then as painful as it might seem write down all the negative thoughts and feelings you have about weighing more than you would like. Some other questions to ask yourself during this time include: • What are the benefits of keeping my body fit and healthy?

• How would my life improve if I felt better about my body?

• Am I the healthy role model I

would like to be for my children?

• What am I really putting into my body each day?

Finally, write down three things you can do in the next twelve hours to get you started again and most importantly, do it.

Remember motivation starts with a single positive thought and is maintained with every step you take in the right direction.

Having formulated supplements for 15 years I have seen the positive effects of supplements with thousands of people. It is quite daunting to walk into a large health store or online shopping site to see the huge range of products available. Over the next few weeks I want to walk you through this confusion to ensure that you are getting the right product for you circumstances. Feel free to call me if you want a review of what you are doing. The first step is to divide supplements into their major groups of medicinal and nutritional supplements. Medicinal products include herbal and homeopathic products.

The second major group of supplements are nutritional supplements. These are compounds that are extracted from foods or soils that should be in our diet. These include vitamins, minerals and a wide group called phytonutrients which are my area of expertise. Rule number one with supplements is not to use medicinal products to solve nutritional problems. For example, I cannot see the point of adding immune-stimulating herbs like echinacea when the immune system is deficient in vitamin D and trace minerals. Always apply nutrition first, medicinal products second. I like to think of nutritional supplements much like the food pyramid. At the base are those nutrients everybody needs, all the time. For most people, most of the time they need products that cover

all the vitamins, all the minerals, and at least, the most important antioxidant groups. Doses should of course be set according to individual circumstances. Further up the pyramid are products that are used in addition to base multistyle products. Next week we look at multi-type products and identify the nutrients that should be included. Survey says women look good for themselves More than half of women say when it comes to keeping up appearances, they are motivated to look good for themselves, according to a survey

The survey asked 1000 women their views on beauty, with 57 per

cent saying they make themselves look good for their own benefit, though younger women are also more motivated by their partner or colleagues. Almost a third, 30 per cent, say they wear make-up at least once a week, yet 38 per cent wear it every day. When they do wear make-up, almost half of respondents admit they don’t always remove it before going to bed.

Psychologist Sara Chatwin says

Former head girl sells mother’s home to The Elms Former Tauranga Girls College student Dr Diane Hayward, now head of oncology at Johns Hopkins University Maryland, sold her mother’s house this week.

It’s a house her mother built at 29 Mission St next door to the home Diane grew up in on the corner of Mission and Chapel Streets.

Her mother was uncomfortable in the original home after her father died, says Diane. So she built a new house right next door.

“I sold it to The Elms Trust on very favourable terms because it was something my mother always expected would happen, and something that I thought she would like, and, I have affection for Tauranga.”

Diane currently holds the positions of professor and director of the Viral Oncology Program at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at John Hopkins. Research interests include epstein-bach virus and kaposi sarcoma-associated herpes virus, viral latency and tumorigenesis, mechanisms of virus-induced proliferation, and herpes virus proteomics.

Her research is well recognized in the cancer field also, receiving a merit award from the National Cancer Institute, from 1988 to 1995 and more recently from 2002 to 2011. Diane attributes her success to the edu-

“I went to the local school then Otago. Then I left to go overseas. When you go to a place like the US that you know very little about, you wonder whether you will cut it because you come from a very little town,” says Diane.

Within days she realised the education provided in New Zealand at that time made her the equal of any of the scientists and researchers she met.

Diane and her family live in Baltimore, and they holiday in Mount Maunganui.

Brain surgery for Tauranga mum A young Tauranga mother has gained approval for a delicate surgery needed to remove a life-threatening brain tumour.

Rhozie Edmonds, 26, was diagnosed with a pineal cyst in the pineal gland at the centre of her brain in March 2012.

The mother of two went to the doctor after waking with a major headache, nausea, vertigo, blurry vision, memory loss and slurred speech early last year.

She then battled with doctors for three months

to find the cause of her pain.

Following her diagnosis, Rhozie has been trying to get approval for a delicate surgery requiring $90,000 in Australia.

Last week world renowned Australian neurosurgeon Dr Charlie Teo told Rhozie the surgery can go ahead, if she can raise the money.

“I am really nervous and scared, but relieved,” says Rhozie.

“Dr Charlie Teo is confident and capable of performing surgery to remove the cyst.”

Injury resulting from falls is a common problem with potentially serious consequences, sometimes resulting in loss of independence or death.

Bay of Plenty District Health Board is running April Falls 2013, a promotion highlighting falls prevention.

BOPDHB director of nursing Julie Robinson says the aim is to educate people on steps to minimise the harm from falls and to help prevent them occurring.

“Most falls happen in the community but also occur in rest-homes and hospitals. On average 60 falls, trips and slips are reported by patients and staff every month. “Of these falls, trips and slips, approximately one will result in serious harm. An information display is set up in the main corridor of Tauranga Hospital featuring a range of booklets which contain strength and balance exercises. “Improving strength and balance has been proven to reduce the risk of falls. Staying physically active is the single most important thing you

can do to remain fit and independent,” says Julie.

and his son who were conversant in Maori. It was also verbally exlained to Maori that they were to come under the rule of the British Crown and its Laws and in return would have protection against other cannibalistic tribes.

Now Richard Matthews (Sun 5/4/2013), let’s deal with your little machinations. Bruce Moon is absolutely right in his summation on the treaty – there is only one legal Treaty and that is the Maori version which translates back to English word for word to Hobson’s final draft (the Littlewood draft) currently languishing in NZ Archives.

The Treaty was a simple document with a simple message and refers to ‘all’ the peoples of New Zealand, not just maori. I think you are getting carried away with the definition of ‘taonga’ confusing it with modern day misinterpretations. As Humpty Dumpty in Alice in Wonderland said, “the words can mean whatever you want them to mean”.

Whatever relevance the Treaty had, it is way past its use by date as is the biased Waitangi Tribunal.

Here is a little bit of real history for you to ponder on – Professor James Rutherford confirmed in his 1949 essay titled ‘the Treaty of Waitangi and the acquisition of British sovereignty. NZ was acquired by an acts of state and falls into the category of colonies acquired by occupation. The definitive acts of state being Hobsons proclamations of 21 May 1840 and HM Governments approval of 2 October 1840 .NZ was actually taken by proclamation of soveignity, for the North, South and Stewart Islands.

People in the know will be unable to follow your fuzzy logic so they will ignore it and simply stick with the facts, a far safer bet and the correct option.

Maori given equal rights with colonising British In response to Richard Matthews epistle in which he kindly offers to widen my “ever-narrowing mind”, I would like to suggest he try and cure his tunnel vision by researching facts before he rushes into print. Regarding the word “Taonga”, when Maori Chiefs first wrote to King William asking him to help save them from other tribes, they said “We have nothing, only flax, timber, pork and potatoes”.

The official book commemorating the Te Maori exhibition which went to New York in 1984, leaves no doubt that “taonga” meant anything other than “tangible treasures”. The Maori adviser and authority on this unique exhibition was Professor Hirini “Moko” Mead of Victoria University . In his book “Tikanga Maori” (2003) he carefully defines the term taonga as a “highly prized OBJECT”.

The Treaty states that land could be sold if there is desire to do so, through the Crown. Maori had no idea that land had commercial value and were delighted when approached with offers of money.

Large tracts of land were sold, sometimes the same piece over and over again.

Queen Victoria, who reigned over vast territories, did not want to take on a small country on the other side of the world inhabited by cannibalistic tribes. She very reluctantly did so by allowing it to become another colony. Matthews seems to be unaware that New Zealand is the only country to be colonised where the Maori were given equal rights with the British.

A law says that if a problem comes about because of translation the version to use, is the one that is written in the indigenous (native) language of the country where it was signed. In Aotearoa New Zealand that means Maori.

Fraudulent fisher case adjourned

The Mount Maunganui businessman found guilty of 13 separate charges of making false and misleading statements on fishing returns has had his case adjourned until April 24. Dalgon Kim was due to be sentenced in Tauranga District Court on Wednesday but his case was adjourned by Judge Peter Rollo to allow for the completion of a community detention appendix. In February, Kim was convicted and ordered to forfeit his fishing vessel the Jay Debra 2099 to the crown. The conviction comes after a defended hearing held during August and September 2012.

Drug accused in court

A Welcome Bay man accused of selling cannabis and methamphetamine will remain behind bars.

Derek Vince Gibson, 30, appeared in Tauranga District Court this week. Gibson is facing seven charges of offering to supply cannabis, and conspiring to sell methamphetamine between February 4 and March 6 of this year. His lawyer Bill Nabley asked Judge Harding for an extension in the remand period after claiming he had submitted an e-bail application which had not been filed by the court.

Taxi bashers remanded

Two Pyes Pa teenagers who admitted to beating a taxi driver punching him up to 12 times will remain behind bars until May 9. Timote Manu, 19, and co-offender Jared Dixon, 18, appeared in Tauranga District Court on Tuesday where they were further remanded in custody by Judge Robert Wolff. Both Manu and Dixon earlier admitted to punching the taxi driver when he dropped them off at an Ohauiti address in January. Manu also pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery.

I read with interest that Mr Crosby says they could not talk about the “secret” TCC payout to the former CEO’s widow, from my personal experience previously the Mayor has not been so discreet or considered, why now?

If it’s necessary to payout TCC ratepayers money then that can only be to “gag” the recipients, the real question is “What does TCC (not Ken) have to hide?

Mayor Crosby has insinuated that Ken “could not defend himself ”, but what’s there to defend against, Ken “received” the money?

The new TCC CEO had authority up to $250,000, so how “small” is the payment?

One Councillor said “the

payout was not much”, but for most people tens of thousands is a lot. Who really is it that needs defending, the Mayor and the usual suspects? The Mayor didn’t sign the agreement so is not bound to silence, so what is the real reason that Mayor Crosby playing that card?

When I asked questions the immediate response was threats of legal action, be silent or be sued. That speaks volumes about what has really happened and that a lot is yet to be revealed… perhaps the truth!

Mayor Crosby’s statements are very unfair to former CEO Paterson. If you don’t reveal the truth of the payment then I will and as usual the old boys are all in on it.

Also if a tree has blown over it is generally because of old age and rot which will deem it not worthy of revovery. Sure windblow of a healthy tree then possibly yes.

Basically it is like most businesses, lots of money invested for small return.Which will not help DOC as much as you may think.

BayTrust grant helps make it safer for boaties Coastguard Eastern Region is now operating its marine VHF radio service 24 hours, seven days a week in the Bay of Plenty thanks to a $20,000 BayTrust grant and the latest internet (VOIP) technology.

In fact there was an emergency on the first night that the new night service began operating. Definitely money well spent!

”Being able to pay for one operator each night to man the radio network and respond to boating emergencies for the entire area makes it safer for all the boaties out there,” Mr Hull says. ”If boaties head out very early in the morning they can now file a trip report; if they’re back into port late at night they can now let us know they’re home safely, and of course if they get into trouble at night we can pick up their distress signal and activate the relevant unit,” Mr Hull says.

Beachaven Community House offers friendship and support Moving to a new area and not knowing many people can be daunting but that doesn’t have to be the case in Papamoa - Beachaven Community House provides a place for people of all ages to gather and make new friends.

The Beachaven Community House offers a range of activities - playgroups, craft groups for kids and adults, music and walking groups, a monthly day out for seniors and a place to “just sit and have a cuppa” – and has received an

$11,478 BayTrust grant to support its activities. ”Papamoa is a fast growing community where most people are new to the area. This can often leave people feeling isolated and alone.

Beachaven Community House offers a meeting place and shared activities that help support families and strengthens our community,” Manager Gale Gordon says. Beachaven Community House also offers counselling and parent support.

BayTrust to celebrate 25 years of giving BayTrust will celebrate 25 years of giving to the Bay of Plenty community next month.

Hundreds of community groups have benefited from the $50 million BayTrust has contributed during that time.

Chair Gregg Brown says the benefits to the community are incalculable. ”BayTrust remains firmly committed to supporting, strengthening and enhancing Bay of Plenty communities

for the long term benefit of all the region’s residents. Roll on the next 25 years!”

BayTrust was established in 1988, to manage the local investment in TrustBank for the benefit of Bay of Plenty communities, from Katikati to Ruapehu to the East Cape. The sale of TrustBank in 1996 provided BayTrust with almost $90 million which has subsequently grown to $158m.

It turns out that particular region in Germany, which includes a highway heavilytravelled by trucks, is something of a magnet for food thieves. One possible explanation for the Nutella theft is that the gang of sweet-toothed robbers needed something to accompany the 5 tons of coffee they stole a few months ago.

And, with all that sugar and caffeine swirling around it seems almost logical to mention the other big food hiest there, at the end of last year - 34,000 cans of Red Bull.

Right. Let’s leave that – before I get tempted to mention last year’s theft of $NZ400,000 of maple syrup in Quebec – and move on to a couple of upcoming concerts in Tauranga that look well worthwhile.

First up, alt-folk outfit Bond Street Bridge are coming to play at the Tauranga art gallery next Thursday (18 April) with their multimedia song cycle “The Explorer’s Club: Antarctica”.

Inspired by the stories of Captain Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton, this is the baby of singer/songwriter Sam Prebble, who has recruited a band of seasoned folk musicians from the Auckland underground and produced a series of vignettes drawn from the diaries and letters of the adventurers. The tales of shipwreck, frostbite, and survival in the snow are presented in a combination of spoken-word storytelling and original folk songs, the songs accompanied by projected heritage photographs, taken by the explorers themselves nearly a century ago, used with permission of the Alexander Turnbull Library.

The show has played at both the Wellington and Auckland Fringe Festivals and won the award for Best Music in the 2013 NZ Fringe Festival Awards, so I think we can expect something pretty special. It starts at 7.30pm, tickets are $25 from the gallery.

Tattletale talents

And next Tuesday (16 April) the Tauranga Acoustic Music Club is bringing the rather wonderful Tattletale Saints to the Historic Village Theatre at 17th Avenue. They’re a duo comprising singer/songwriter and guitarist Cy Winstanley and singer and upright bassist Vanessa McGowan, who have just launched their debut album How Red Is The Blood, recorded in Nashville with bluegrass wiz Tim O’Brien producing (he played in Tauranga at the Arts Festival a couple of year’s back).

I’ve seen these guys at a couple of festivals and they are fantastic! Great playing, lovely harmonies and good songs in a sort of country/folk vein all make for a magic combination. The show kicks off at 7.30pm, tickets are $15.

YOU’VE BEEN TRUMPED Dir: Anthony Baxter - Starring: Donald Trump, a bunch of ordinary folk You’ve been Trumped is a riveting spectacle: a documentary front seat as Donald Trump bullies and manipulates his was into creating a golf course – inevitably it will be “the world’s greatest golf course” – on one of Scotland’s last unspoiled wilderness dunes, land prized both ecologically and scientifically.

It’s a David and Goliath struggle as a handful farmers and home owners who have lived on the land for decades and generations find their properties will pos-

sibly be subject to Compulsory Purchase Orders and that their coast, once the preserve of everyone, is about to become a playground for only the very wealthy.

What follows is an uneven struggle and Trump, his flat expression, awful hair and dead eyes appearing like a relentless devouring great white shark, is obviously unconcerned at how his actions – from outright lies to the grossest of insults about those who stand in his way – will affect his reputation. His company’s approach

In the aptly-named isolated mountain town of Cold Rock, Bad Things are happening. Children are being taken and locals blame it on The Tall Man . Jessica Biel is the widowed town nurse with a young troubled boy and it's not hard to guess – especially after the prologue – that mother and son will soon be in jeopardy. But the plot takes several unexpected turns. Nothing, it seems, is what it seems, and the film keeps you guessing for a big part of its running time.

This is richly atmospheric, particularly in its depiction of the rundown community, and it's good to be genuinely surprised by a story, even if the final act lurches a little.

While Moneyball championed a cash-strapped baseball franchise that pioneered the use of statistics over old-fashioned traditional wisdom and gut instinct, Trouble with the Curve bats for the other team. Clint Eastwood's Gus is an ageing scout for the Atlanta Braves. The game – as we're told – has changed and Gus, the only man not using modern technology, has one last scouting trip to prove he's not over the hill. Accompanied by his estranged daughter (Amy Adams) and rival scout/love interest Justin Timberlake, Clint seems effortlessly at home as the ornery old battler, eyesight failing but refusing to go quietly and slowly bonding with his bruised daughter. There's also quite a lot of baseball.

The South Korean film industry has been doing great things in recent years and The Thieves is pretty good. It's a casino heist thriller, bringing to mind Ocean's Eleven with its slick looks and ingenious

The New Zealand Historic Places Trust talk by archaeologist Warren Gumbley will shed light on the lives of Maori settlers who settled on the Papamoa coastline as one of the first places settled by Polynesians about 550 years ago.

Warren, who has been involved with Papamoa’s archaeology for 20 years, describes the settlement as a “thriving community with its own dynamic”. His talk will look at different aspects of life based on archaeological features found –from fishing shell hooks through to the post holes of people’s houses.

He says the evidence offers great insights into what was a successful and enterprising group of people that originally arrived by canoe in their hundreds.

“They found at Papamoa soils and climates suitable for growing crops such as kumara and taro, but also collected food for subsistence like fish and wild plants, for both food and implements.”

Warren will also discuss some of the artefacts that have been found, including stone kokowai (pounder) used to grind red ochre, a sandstone hoanga (grindstones) for polishing or wearing down stone or keeping adzes sharp, and an adze made from NelsonMarlborough argillite.

Warren will also touch on the question of why the Papamoa plain was suddenly abandoned in the 1700’s. Regional archaeologist Rachel Darmody, who will also talk about the trust’s statutory role in safeguarding archaeology, says Warren’s talk offers a great chance to learn about the region’s earliest inhabitants.

Comedy not ‘a quiet night in’ It’s a typical Friday night for the Smith family, so it would seem. Lost jobs, failed courses, and even a teen pregnancy – all will be revealed under the darkness of a power cut during Rehab Theatre’s latest production.

‘A Quiet Night In’ is the fast paced comedy being brought to Tauranga

by Rehab Theatre, and plays at 16th Avenue Theatre from April 25–28.

It’s about real life issues with a sprinkling of your favourite comedy songs to delight and inspire audiences of all ages, turning anyone’s quiet night in, into a big night out, says Rehab Theatre producer and president Jez Jones.

Directed by Dyllan Martin and written by Sam Martin, this entertaining

show is a premier for New Zealand.

“With songs, laughs and family drama, ‘A Quiet Night In’ really takes the audience into the hearts, minds and living room of a troubled family,” says Jez. “The show is so immersive, the audience feels like they are part of the family.”

The production from Fringe Theatre is coming to Tauranga through the Rehab Theatre.

Jez says Fringe Theatre specialises in holding a mirror up so society can not only see itself, but so individuals can participate in experiences outside their usual daily routine.

Country music charity show at The Orchard The Te Puke Music Club is celebrating its 22nd annual charity show this month in support of Waipuna Hospice.

On April 20, a range of artists will play country music at The Orchard in Te Puke.

The line-up includes 2012 runner-up junior entertainer of the year Anahera Waiariki, Auckland duo Just Kiddin, Kay Tappin and Pai Te Tamaki.

Also in the line-up is the “real top notch group” Unity, who won the Tauranga Star awards last year.

Musicians Melissa, who joined the Te Puke

Music Club when she was eight years old, and Chet are also performing.

Organiser Geoff Mutton says the event is a great night out where people can enjoy light entertainment while supporting a charity at the same time.

“We’ve got some really good artists from around the country headlined by Marian Burns. It’s just really excellent family entertainment.”

the fiddle and was awarded the Australian Golden Fiddle Award as the best solo fiddler in January.

Te Puke Intermediate School’s kapa haka group will open the show with traditional Maori songs and haka.

The music club holds a charity concert every year with all proceeds going towards supporting charities, including St John and volunteer firefighters. This year all proceeds go towards Waipuna Hospice. The show starts at 7pm.

Place your bet for Proms Place your bets: This weekend the Proms makes sporting history with the first ever performance of Beethoven’s 5th Trifecta – and no, that’s not a misprint.

According to Neale Blaymires, the original idea came from a YouTube video of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, but played as a sporting match and written by P.D.Q. Bach.

The symphonia wanted to give the proms some extra pep this year so Neale was let loose creating a local version.

“The YouTube video is brilliant, so I re-wrote it for New Zealand – tossing in rugby, netball and horse racing – and calling it Beethoven’s 5th Trifecta.”

Various sections of the orchestra will play as competing teams in the Beethoven piece, with a live, blowby-blow commentary delivered by Winston and McCarthy – whose names are tributes to 1950’s rugby commentator Winston McCarthy.

“It’s the full deal, with a referee to award penalties and keep the players in line, a nurse and stretcher bearers, some match fixing, and a fight between the clarinettist and conductor.”

This Sunday a show featuring classic cars, motorbikes and anything motorised will help fund the Katikati schools’ breakfast club.

Outstanding talent set to perform

From petrol and diesel engines to steam; classic American cars, bikes and traction engines through to trucks – there is something for all motoring enthusiasts at Sunday’s fundraising car and bike show.

Organiser Craig Hussey says the success of last year’s show prompted him to make it an annual fundraiser for Katikati Ate Am Breakfast Club; an initiative that provides breakfasts for Katikati primary and college students.

“It was great how the Katikati community got behind it last year

and we are hoping it will be even bigger this year,” says Craig. “It’s a great cause - helping the students get off to a good start.”

The charity event has been opened to anything motorised this year – with three public choice awards going to the best car, bike and other. Craig is also planning lawnmower or kart racing if there is sufficient interest.

“I would love to hear from people involved in it – we’ve definitely got space.”

The $1600 raised last year helped the breakfast club cover most of its costs – catering for rural students whose early morning buses left no time for breakfast, to others just having a

chat with friends or in genuine need.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning at 8am, the Ate Am Club serves up breakfast as part of an initiative that began nine years ago. The club, which is run by community volunteers, offers breakfast at Katikati College two days a week.

The fundraiser is at Browny’s Café and Bar (6km south of Katikati on SH2) from 10am-2pm, with participants to park up 9am10am. It also features live music, a market, food, drink and raffles.

Being transformed by the renewal of our minds Romans 12:2 says: “Do not be conformed to this world, [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude].”

As born again believers, our old (inherent) Adamic nature was founded in sin (self-seeking rebellion and independence) has been crucified with Christ – it has been buried with Him in baptism and through new birth we have a new heart and a new spirit.

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has passed away, behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:27).

Galatians 2:20 says “I have been crucified with Christ.

It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me”, and so as true believers we live in union with Christ – empowered, directed and enabled by the Holy Spirit.

Although a true Christian is a new creation in his heart, in his nature, in his innermost being, in that essential nature which governs who he is in Christ; his body and his soul (mind, will and emotions) have not been changed.

We still retain our personal intrinsic identity. This means that the “memory bank” of life’s experiences and the habitual ways we have responded to life in our thinking, in our emotions and in our choices, are unchanged through new birth and they are in need of renewal.

Accordingly, we must learn to transform our thinking, our emotional responses and the exercise of our wills to reflect the fact that Christ is living in us and through us.

We need to build new thought patterns and new ways of responding to life’s situations and circumstances. It is only as we consistently choose to align our thinking and emotions with God’s word and His ways that transformation and renewal takes place.

The devil usually uses personal pronouns when he accuses us, so he says to you, for example: “God doesn’t love you! If He did, He wouldn’t allow these circumstances.”

summerset by the sea – tauranga information day Information Day

Wednesday 17 April, 10.30am, The Tauranga by the Waterfront. 1 Second Ave, Tauranga This Wednesday we’ll be in Tauranga to share our plans for our exciting new retirement village, Summerset by the Sea in Katikati.

Located right on the end of Park Road, the village will comprise a mixture of villas, townhouses, apartments, and, when completed, an impressive Village Centre with care apartments and care centre.

Our first stage has commenced building and consists of 23 villas with many taking advantage of the glorious sea views. Make an appointment with us on Wednesday to visit the village and see the progress being made. The first homes will be ready in June of this year.
