The All Blacks have of course shown us that champions still walk amongst us, after a thrilling thrashing of South Africa to take the rugby champs.

And far from being defeated on the water, our young yachties, namely Burling and Meech, have proven that not only does NZ have world beaters in sailing, but the Bay of Plenty breeds them.

They win yacht races with the level of their skill, not a measure of their budget.

They are among a throng, if that is the right term for a collection of sailors, from our region who are right at the top of their game. Add to the recent world champs wins the successes also of the Saunders and others, and we get a picture of a sailing region producing yachties who can foot it with the world’s best, based on skill, not just a measure of how much money can be invested in technology, which is how many now view the America’s Cup. Really the America’s Cup should be named something more appropriate, such as The Technology Spending Championships With Some Sailing Thrown In. Which brings us to some concerns that RR headquarters has been wrestling with for some time. That many sports are not aptly named. So we’ve launched a campaign to re-name most of the world’s sports to more appropriately describe what these events involve.

Getting a grip

And talking earlier of boats, be aware that boat races are often confused with drinking games and sculling isn't always an event involving rowing and oars, although participants have been known to end up in the drink.

Another sporting code that has identity issues is croquet. Try explaining that to the Martian sports fan. Croquet is a silly French word that means 'small round chocolates that your gran used to have’. This would be far better described as Malletting.

Netball is very clear and concise, along with basketball, and football but we have some major concerns over the pitching of Polo. This is essentially football on horses, although much of the world simply refers to polo players as tossers - even though technically they don't toss the ball, but

whack it with their bats. So the most logical name change for polo would be to Horse Malletting.

Javelin needs to reclaim its ancient roots and become Spear Chucking. Shot Put is pretty clear, and most of the athletic events, however many of you have often thought Walking is just stupid.

Boxing should rightly be called hitting. Fencing obviously needs a new name, unless it's being performed at Mystery Creek during Fieldays with a pair of pliers. Tennis is okay, but only played by people who don’t have Labrador retrievers. There is no need for the complications of a net, racquet and headbands if you have a tennis ball obsessed canine in the neighbourhood.

We may have to consider something like racquet fetch.

Skiing is an odd one. It is essentially Downhill Sliding While Standing on Things. Unless performed over water, in which case it should be called Asking For Trouble. Luge would be better described as Skiing Gone Wrong.

Hockey is another code which could use some re-branding. While many people describe hockey as simply confusing, avid fans will tell you it is quite logical. We are open to suggestions on this one. Bent Stick Ball is a possibility, but our lines are now open for your calls on this. While you’re at it, have a think about other sports that need re-branding and drop a line to brian@thesun.co.nz In the meantime, please don't take the Martian to see any synchronized swimming, unless he’s had a couple of stiff drinks.

The aforementioned wrestling is well labelled. It leaves you in no doubt what happens. But imagine a Martian landing on earth and trying to come to grips with some of our sport names.

How would you explain rugby? It's a sport involving a field, goalposts and an oval ball but it’s named after a grubby little town in England.

If that’s not difficult enough for our

extra-terrestrial sports fan to grasp, try explaining badminton.

So the proposal is to rename badminton as Shuttlecocking.

Now any pursuit involving the cock word, especially combined with some shuttling, is fraught with hazards. It could be argued that shuttlecocking is the après-golf pastime of Tiger Woods, but we can assure you that the world would soon get used to the new name for the sport and those of you who are sniggering right now, I remind you, we should be adults about this and accept there are times when it’s appropriate to whip out the cock word in polite conversation without fear of offence.

A life saving move Tauranga’s marine community is backing Maritime New Zealand’s call to enforce compulsory wearing of lifejackets for people under the age of 15, but says the legislation will have “teething problems”.

This week MNZ announced it supports a move to the compulsory stance, along with continuing to encourage everyone on the water to wear lifejackets at all times.

Tauranga Sport Fishing Club’s manager Grant Holley is supportive of the proposed changes but says one of the issues is that people like their freedom of choice.

“And it will be the same as the issues we went through when seatbelts became compulsory. But now 99.9 per cent of people, when they hop into a car, put their seatbelt on,” says Grant.

“I guess it’s just education and time that will get people convinced that it is the right thing to do.”

MNZ-commissioned research data on boating activity indicates a high percentage of boaties carry lifejackets on-board (between 88-95 per cent depending on boattype) but a lower percentage actually wear lifejackets.

The rate of wearing lifejackets, over all types of vessels is 80 per cent, but drops to 56-58 per cent for power and sail boats.

Volunteer maritime warden Barry Benton believes such a law is important, because not only will it help change boating behaviour but will influence the use of lifejackets by future generations.

“It becomes habit, doesn’t it, and that’s the key. Anything that saves lives has got to be good.”

A Bay of Plenty maritime volunteer for more than 30 years, Barry says compliance levels have improved dramatically, with most adhering to the on-board requirement, but there is a “hard core” who find them too expensive or too awkward.

Barry sees this as “a foolish act” in avoiding one’s own safety.

“Compared to dying, I think they [lifejackets] are quite cheap.”

Bursting at the seams A busy winter securing a number of high profile events to an already jam-packed schedule has the team at ASB Baypark confident they have the recipe for a summer of success.

For the next five months ASB Baypark will play host to an array of events including music concerts, freestyle motocross, and the usual drawcard of high octane speedway.

Headlining this week’s announcement is the hosting rights to the inaugural Mount Vibes New Year’s Eve Festival showcasing The Black Seeds, I Am Giant, Sons of Zion and Home Brew. About 6000 people are expected to attend the inaugural event.

ASB Baypark manager Ervin McSweeney is rapt to see the venue evolving into a viable option for events outside their usual domain of speedway for people to attend during summer and beyond.

“Mount Vibes is a new one for us, but it is something that we have always been interested in because it is New Years and a lot of

people are in town and looking for events.”

“People are on holiday and come to the Bay of Plenty to relax and have fun and it’s pretty good for them to have some things to go and see.

“It’s always somewhere we have had speedway but we have always been very keen to extend that, so we are now getting on our way.”

Keeping in theme with the popular speedway season, from October 26 to March 29, ASB Baypark has secured a Monster Truck and Crusty Demons Show set down for January 4 and the return of the successful D1NZ Drifting Championships on January 18-19.

But Ervin admits the most exciting component of the summer could well be hosting a V8 Jetsprint Championships – a pioneering first for the venue allowing for the sport to be televised.

The decision is expected to be announced later this month. Going ahead will mean digging 5metre-wide channels a few inches deep around

Summerfest struggles for cash The future of Summerfest – the family friendly, no alcohol, no drugs summer music festival – is in doubt this summer after city councillors refused council funding for it this week.

The decision was made on Monday at the final council meeting of the current council.

Summerfest was seeking $43,000 in council funding. It might have received $32,000 but instead got nothing except a promise council chief executive officer Garry Poole will look at support in kind for the young people’s musical event.

Councillors were asked to approve a staff proposal to grant $50,000 to the Gate Pa 150th commemoration, $32,000 to Summerfest and for Garry Poole to begin negotiations with private backers to arrange support for the NZ All Stars, mini X games-D1NZ event at ASB Baypark.

The only councillors who support that are Larry Baldock, Terry

Molloy, Tony Christiansen and Mayor Stuart Crosby.

The rest of the councillors refused the $50,000, saying taking the parks department surplus and spending it on the commemoration wasn’t right. The $32,000 was voted to the Gate Pa commemorations, leaving Summerfest with nothing.

As The Weekend Sun went to press Summerfest trustees were doubting the festival will be held this summer.

In July this year when the council gave $30,000 for the National Jazz Festival, $20,000 for the Port of Tauranga Half Marathon, $30,000 for the Aims Games, $20,000 for the Garden and Arts Festival and $25,000 for the Tauranga Arts Festival, it was told that the Garden and Art Festival had $180,000 in the bank.

Events funding has remained at $200,000 for 10 years. The bulk of it supports the city’s flagship events.

Child hit by car in Greerton

An eight-year-old boy was hit by a car outside the Greerton Police Station this week. Emergency services were called to the incident at Greerton’s Chadwick Rd about 11.45am on Tuesday. A motorist was travelling down Chadwick Rd, toward Cameron Rd, when the boy on a bicycle came out of a laneway next to the Department of Conservation.

The boy was conscious and breathing at the scene and was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Women injured in SH2 crash

Two women were taken to Tauranga Hospital after a two-car crash on State Highway 2 near Whakamarama this week. Emergency services were called to the crash at the intersection of SH2 and Munro Rd just before 2pm Monday. Tauranga Police Sergeant Nigel Ramsden says a woman driving a stationwagon was waiting to turn right into Munro Rd when a 4WD, driven by another woman, crashed into the rear. The 4WD flipped onto its side, trapping the driver, who was the vehicle’s sole occupant.

Both drivers – a 31-year-old woman and a16-yearold girl – were taken to hospital with minor and moderate injuries.

$1m Rena fund recipients named

A stone penguin sculpture at Mount Maunganui, residents of Motiti Island, and Tourism Bay of Plenty are among recipients of a $1million Rena Recovery Fund. The $1million fund is a donation from Mediterranean Shipping Company – the charterers of the cargo ship Rena when it hit Astrolabe Reef on October 5, 2011. Although MSC was not responsible for the operations of the ship when it grounded, its managing director of MSC (Aust) Pty Ltd, Kevin Clarke, says the company was concerned about the costs imposed on the community following the environmental disaster and has donated $1million towards local organisations.

Picnic celebrations To celebrate the start of the cruise ship season and the completion of the Pilot Bay Boardwalk, families are being invited to Mount Mainstreet’s Pilot Bay Picnic on Saturday.

People are encouraged to grab some takeaways or take a picnic, enjoy free entertainment (weather permitting) and see the Sea Princess depart the Port of Tauranga at 7.30pm.

The picnic is at Pilot Bay on October 12 from 5pm-6.30pm.

There is nothing more frustrating as a tourist than discovering you missed a place’s hidden gems after you leave.

That’s where Tourism BOP’s cruise ambassadors come in. Every day a cruise ship arrives, a group is waiting by the gangplank from 7am, ready to greet passengers as they disembark and provide tips and advice on what to do during their visit.

Tauranga’s Sue Lawry loves helping the visitors so much she has signed on for her third year as an ambassador, describing it as the perfect summer job.

“I absolutely love it. It’s just great fun, everyone is on holiday and in a great mood, and I love Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty - it’s so easy to promote such a great place.”

Sue is one of eight ambassadors who will welcome the 240,000 passengers and crew scheduled to disembark during the cruise season, which begins on Saturday with the

arrival of the Sea Princess. The ambassadors help with queries as diverse as where to find a church service, get their haircut or find a doctor – but generally they get asked for advice on what to do.

“If they want to book a tour, we just send them to the i-Port – that’s their role – but a lot just want to find out what they can do around Tauranga for the day.”

Her advice varies depending on who she is talking to and their interests, but walking around Mauao is generally one of her top recommendations.

Sue says being an ambassador reminds her just how good it is to live here.

“The feedback you get is that this place is so clean and looks great. You just need to see the harbour gleaming on a sunny day to be reminded just how good it is here.”

Tourism BOP cruise manager Esther Goldsworthy says the ambassador programme plays a critical part in helping passengers get the most out of their visit.

The excitement and joy of getting dressed up and looking fabulous is being injected back into residents of Melrose Retirement Village with a masquerade ball tonight.

The event from 6-9.30pm is for residents and their families, and is part of the village’s efforts to lose the traditional model of retirement care and bring back the fun and enjoyment of the residents’ younger years.

Organiser Leslie Spark says “Our belief is that everyone, no matter what age, is capable of continued growth and activity”.

Ocktoberfest fun A fun day for the family including a giant slide, a sawdust dig, cookie decorating, and Old Macdonald’s Farm is on in Te Puke next weekend.

The Ocktoberfest Family Gala Day and Fun Run/Walk is on October 19, from 9am-midday. The fun run/walk is either 5km or 2.5km at 9am. Visitors can also enjoy food, live entertainment, and professional dog/car washes.

Cap placed on liquor stores

More bars, but no more off-licences or pubs will be allowed in industrial areas; and there will be no restrictions on outlet’s proximities to schools, according to a new local alcohol policy. The final decision on the number and locations of liquor outlets was made by the city and district councils’ Joint Governance Committee on Tuesday. The maximum licensed hours for all bars, pubs, taverns and on-licences in Tauranga City Centre is 9am to 3am with a one-way door system from 2am. The maximum licensed hours for all off-licences will be 7am-10pm. The maximum licensed hours for all on-licences in the Western Bay of Plenty, excluding Tauranga City centre, is 9am to 1am.

Matapihi drink driver sentenced

A Matapihi woman described by a judge as a recidivist drink driver will serve a sentence of community work and community detention.

Candice Lloyd, 20, was sentenced in Tauranga District Court this week after earlier pleading guilty to driving with excess breath alcohol, driving while disqualified, and two counts of careless driving causing injury.

Judge Louis Bidois told the court Lloyd was over the legal alcohol limit when she drove the car that crashed into a powerpole in Matapihi in June this year. The 20-year-old was driving along Matapihi Rd about 9.40pm on June 10 when she lost control of the vehicle, crossed the centreline and crashed into a pole. Lloyd’s blood was tested and found to contain 106 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal driving limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Judge Bidois treated the drink driving charge as the lead charge and sentenced Lloyd to two months’ community detention, 180 hours’ community work, nine months’ supervision and disqualified her from driving for 12 months and one day. Her disqualification begins November 16.

Rail riding ways

Watching flames leap out of express trains as they whizzed past at 6.30pm made a young Bryan Campbell think “I wouldn’t mind driving one of those one day”.

Now 71, the Mount Maunganui KiwiRail locomotive engineer has been in the rail industry for 54 years – making him New Zealand’s longest serving train driver.

And there are no plans of retiring just yet.

As a child, Bryan says his passion for rail began during holidays to his aunt’s home in Fielding.

“To get out of her hair I used to head along to the station and watch the trains.”

Bryan joined KiwiRail in 1959, where his passion soon aligned with a clear knack for the industry.

Within the first year, he progressed to fireman and by 1966 had reached second grand qualifications.

Soon after working diesel electrics

he advanced to first grade in 1972 and two years later was working on electrics in Wellington.

Bryan moved to rail cars in 1988, was involved as a remote driver with a training unit in 1995 and then became a minded driver.

To date he has worked in Mount Maunganui, Napier, New Plymouth, Taihape, Frankton and Wellington depots – all for KiwiRail, which celebrated 150 years of New Zealand rail last weekend.

“I think it’s the best job in the country because you have the best office window in the country and you get to see all the changing scenes.

“We are sort of like one operating family of railway people and if you

keep your nose clean and follow the regulations, you’re still your own boss on the job.”

Bryan’s highlights include crewing the first steam-powered passenger train into the new Palmerston North Station, driving his first steam locomotive as a locomotive engineer in Frankton and driving the last silver train out of Wellington.

He’s also had 10 years of the silver fern rail car, been involved in remote training and enjoyed the challenge of driving Murupara log trains.

“I am now looking forward to driving the new locomotives in Tauranga and then eventually retiring and playing bowls and travelling.”

Betting on excitement Latest figures on gaming machine use in the Western Bay show their use has fallen marginally during the last two years, but growing online gaming is expected to have more than made up for the drop.

Department of Internal Affair figures for gaming machine proceeds for the March to June quarter in both Tauranga and Western Bay council areas have dropped during the last two years – by a total of 3.35 per cent in Tauranga and one per cent in the Western Bay. Salvation Army Tauranga Addiction Services case worker Catherine Switzer hasn’t noticed any change and suspects other forms of gambling – particularly the increasingly

available world of online gaming – are making up for it.

“There is certainly still a major problem out there, especially when you consider how much is being spent.”

Gaming machine proceeds in the latest quarter in Tauranga totalled $6.904m compared with $1.430m in the Western Bay council area. There are no figures for online gaming.

Catherine says online gaming seems to be attracting a younger, internet savvy market being drawn into the excitement, with offers of initial free credits for online gaming on social media sites.

It’s the time of life when people should be enjoying the fruits of their labours and relaxing, but Salvation Army Tauranga Addictions Service is seeing a growing number of seniors gambling their savings and life away.

Caseworker Catherine Switzer has seen the number of problem gamblers aged over 60 years seeking help rise significantly recently and believes – given the stigma attached to problem gambling – that it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

“There is more shame and embarrassment connected with gambling rather than alcohol or drugs,” says Catherine, who deals with a range of addictions.

Catherine says there are many triggers for problem gambling in older people, from loneliness or boredom to stress, loss of loved ones, depression, or an inability to pursue old interests.

While Catherine says problem gambling affects people from all walks of life, the biggest challenge in helping seniors is their reluctance to take action because of shame and embarrassment.

“They don’t come from an era of having counselling. There is a stigma from society about problem gambling.”

With many seniors on limited incomes, they can easily slip into a desperate cycle to try to win back the money they have lost, says Catherine.

To address the growing problem she says it’s vital people realise gambling can be a major problem and urges families to look out for trouble signs – including when older people do not have enough food, can’t pay their utility bills, stop doing things, change their socialising, or stay away from family outings.

Worried about the over-reliance on senior volunteers in land search and rescue missions, Tauranga’s emergency rescue coordinator Steve Campbell took a leaf out of surf lifesaving’s book, setting up a youth training programme five years ago.

Prompted by a survey by New Zealand Search and Rescue which had found the average age of 80 per cent of the volunteers it relied on was about 57 years of age, Steve turned his attention to succession planning by introducing more youth.

Steve, now the Bay of Plenty Regional Council emergency management coordinator, was inspired by the success of surf lifesaving in getting teenagers to take on lead roles in helping safeguard the public.

He borrowed the youth programme concept from Hamilton, but broadening its land-based search and rescue focus to include Coastguard and rural fire fighting. Through an intensive programme that requires a 500-hour commitment per year from

the teens with weekly training sessions and camps, he and the many leaders he relies on have seen a renewed interest in emergency services and members increase their confidence and leadership skills.

“It’s so satisfying to see them all grow through the programme.”

In the wake of his programme’s success, the Government recently funded a new three-week Youth in Emergency Services programme in six regional centres to give teens a short introduction to emergency services work including fire, search and rescue and civil defence. In contrast the Tauranga programme teaches them a wide range of emergency skills, including earning the Coastguard’s day-skippers licence, rural fire fighting and first aid unit standards.

These days most of his first graduates are on the call-up list when there is an emergency to respond to. Some, like Lars Louis, 19, have been bitten by the emergency bug and want to take it further. Lars encourages other community-minded young people with an interest in the outdoors to get involved.

Te Puke Fire Brigade will celebrate 100 years of firefighting this weekend as current firefighters are joined by past members and the community for an event-filled programme.

Fire chief Glenn Williams says brigade members have gone to a lot of trouble to make this an enjoyable and memorable event for everyone.

“Saturday morning we have a parade of fire appliances through the main street, starting at 11am, followed by a static display outside the old dairy factory on Jellicoe Street for approximately half an hour.

“This will include an invitation for Life Honorary Members to march with us in front of the appliances.”

Glenn says this will be followed by the station being

open to the public for two or three hours.

At 6pm a Centennial Dinner will take place at Te Puke Memorial Hall on Jellicoe Street. “This will include speeches by dignitaries, dinner, presentation of brigade honours, a cutting of a cake, dancing and socialising.”

Sunday morning will include a church service at the St John’s Anglican Church next to the Fire Station at 10am.

Glenn says anyone who wishes to attend is welcome, service personnel please wear uniform.

“There will then be a casual and informal barbecue lunch for those wishing to join us before they head for home.

“I am extremely proud of the efforts our members have put in to make this a special occasion and I trust this weekend will live up to your expectations.”

It may look like a prim and proper event full of polished, perfected pooches – but Tauranga Kennel Association’s annual Championship Shows are ‘dog-eat-dog’ events.

More than 600 show dogs will descend upon The Lakes Tauriko Business Estate this weekend for the national championships, where they will compete for titles, such as best in breed, and ultimately – best in show.

Tauranga Kennel Association treasurer June Lawson says it’s a prestigious event which draws crowds from across the country, and is not to be taken lightly.

“It’s very serious. It’s dog-eat-dog out there.” Shows will run from 8.30am until late afternoon on both Saturday and Sunday, in conjunction with the Bay of Plenty Gundog Show Society’s shows. June says 631 dogs are entered in Saturday’s show, where international judges will eye them for composition, movement, coat, colour and more.

“There is a breed standard for every breed and they must meet that.”

The public is welcome to attend, view the dogs on show and chat to the owners.

“There will be a big crowd – it’s not a small show,” says June.

The trust is auctioning off the naming rights for three of the young kiwi destined to be released at the Oropi native forest park in the next year, in a unique sponsorship deal which trust chairman Phil Wells hopes will also raise awareness about their work.

The sponsorship package includes a visit to weigh and check the young kiwi and have your photo taken with it at the Warrenheip Kiwi Sanctuary (near Cambridge).

They are among seven juvenile kiwi which are being kept at Warrenheip until they reach 15-18 months when they will be released in Otanewainuku, with the first due to come out in the next six to eight months. Their release is being delayed until they are adults in the hope they are less likely to wander off and get lost. Early next year the trust also plans to capture four breeding pairs they have permission to relocate from the back of the Urewera. These birds have transmitters.

An information day is at the reserve on October 20 from 10am. The talk will be followed a short guided walk suitable for young children.

A group of Tauranga cyclists are hoping they have not bitten off more than they can chew ahead of their latest pursuit of cycling adventure in this weekend’s Motu 160.

This Saturday the seven intrepid adventurers – five men and two women – will saddle up and take on the Eastern Bay of Plenty 160km cycling event in what they are calling ‘a training ride’.

“Two of us completed Ironman 2013, three have just completed the Long Distance Triathlon World Champs and four of us are now in training for Ironman 2014,” says Jo Tisch, one of the cyclists.

“We figured that the Motu 160 would be a good training day in preparation for a 200km road ride, K2, around the Coromandel three weeks later.

“In our madness we saw this and thought let’s give this a crack and it could be more challenging than the K2.”

Run in conjunction with the premier Motu Challenge

multisport event, the Motu 160 has cyclists pedal their mountain bikes 65km inland from Opotiki up the Old Coach Road. On reaching Motu Village, the fat-tyred mountain bike makes way for a skinny-wheeled road bike for a 95km haul on the tar back to Opotiki.

Unofficially formed three years ago, the group has become a bunch of ‘middle of the pack’ triathletes who ride together, run together and drink coffee together, says Jo. The 45-year-old admits the group’s enthusiasm and thirst for entering gruelling events might be starting to get the better of them, considering they are specialist road cyclists.

Mid-pack riders in the Motu typically turn in times of around six and a half hours for the Motu 160 in what is a gruelling course. This group has been riding their motley collection of neglected mountain bikes for the last four weeks. Event director Mike van der Boom says numbers are up on last year, with 250 registered for the Motu Challenge multisport event and 100 in the Motu 160.

New welcome wanted

Tourism Bay of Plenty is looking for a new ceremony with which to welcome cruise ship tourists to the Port of Tauranga.

What’s wanted is something unique to the Port of Tauranga, which currently welcomes tourists with a Maori welcome, as is performed at many other New Zealand ports, says general manager Rhys Arrowsmith.

Tauranga is currently running second to the Port of Napier in terms of passenger satisfaction, and Rhys thinks Napier clinches it with its art deco style.

“I want to see us doing something unique,” says Rhys.

This year the port is expecting 80 ship visits compared with 83 last year, says Rhys.

But some of the 83 last year were blown past Napier because of bad weather.

“I don’t know what the future holds. We seem to have hit the glass ceiling with 100 ships, but the ships are getting bigger. If we see the third channel in the Panama Canal opening up, we will start seeing a lot more bigger ships coming down from the Northern Hemisphere.

Mates Tauranga’s open structure and step-by-step process helped Gareth take ownership of his problems in a judgementfree environment, helping him towards becoming a leader and role-model for other men.

“It’s an open group where people can share things about what they are going through. We are not there to judge.”

The Tauranga branch of the Mates Men’s Group started a year ago this month and has grown in size, attracting those struggling from depression, anxiety, or looking to make new mates, to those wanting to help empower

their community.

“There are a lot of support groups for women, but not many for men,” says Mates coordinator David Aupapa.

“Men tend to isolate themselves, many have anxiety and don’t make the connections like women make.”

Mates is a place where men can come to develop communication skills, uncover potential and direction while helping to empower themselves and others along the way. The group meets on Tuesdays every fortnight at 1428 Cameron Road from 7-9pm.

Women’s sailing season starts Women of all ages are being encouraged to register for Women on Water’s upcoming summer sailing season, with racing beginning at the end of this month.

A wonderful happy ending Two weeks ago was the story of Rasta: a lovely black cat needing a home.

Last week ARRC had a visit from a young boy looking to adopt a cat. He told us, he had lost his young cat three years ago.

After one look at Rasta, and confirming where he was found, it was discovered Rasta was his missing cat! A wonderful happy ending for both of them. If you are interested in providing a loving home for a friendly feline, please ring ARRC 579 9115.

WOW is the women’s division of Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club and gives women aged 18-80 the opportunity to experience sailing in both a racing and non-racing capacity.

WOW chairwoman Megan Harris says the popular event now attracts 80-100 women to Tauranga Harbour each WOW night, sailing on up to 20 yachts.

The experience often sparks a sailing passion and Megan is encouraging women to give it a go.

“Through WOW, many of us have been introduced to the pleasures of sailing, enjoying the fresh air and camaraderie of other women sailors and several of us now sail regularly with Wednesday night race crews.”

Tourism BOP, shows people see the Bay of Plenty as more than just a beach, says general manager Rhys Arrowsmith.

“We are a beer, but we are a beer that’s a little bit special,” said Rhys this week, when delivering the tourism annual report to the city council.

Corona was seen as a marketing alignment not because it was a beer but to show one of many successful international

brands we could glean ideas off, says Rhys.

“The main thing we focused on was the style in which those brands market themselves not necessary the product itself.

“Corona as a brand is highly sociable, as is The Bay of Plenty as a holiday destination.

Our marketing campaign will demonstrate that our region has a lot of depth, not just the beach. “The ability to dial up or down what visitors are able to do is our strength and we intend to demonstrate this

in our campaigns. Research also told us that our visitors see us as a laid back, exotic, open and fun loving, modern and stylish destination with a strong social appeal and abundance of produce. Internationals also sighted us in line with the Spanish resort area of Costa Brava.”

Tourism boost from cruise industry From an occasional visit 10 years ago, Tauranga’s cruise industry has grown to be a major plank of regional tourism – with its contribution to the Western Bay economy continuing to grow.

This season’s first cruise ship Sea Princess will arrive on Saturday, marking what Tourism BOP general manager Rhys Arrowsmith expects to be a busy year, with 240,000 passengers and crew expected – up from 219,000 last season – bringing a $51million cash injection to the region.

While the 80 cruise ship visits are less than last season’s 83, more large vessels are docking here. The growing number of return visitors is also leading to more people spending their time and money in the Western Bay, rather than heading to Rotorua, he says.

The perception that most visitors jump on a bus to head to Rotorua is something that frustrates Rhys.

Pyes Pa mother Jen Peeters with 21-month-old William.

Every single day counts Pyes Pa woman Jen Peeters says if caught early, breast cancer is usually curable. Jen’s wasn’t. But even though her story has a sad ending, it does include a ‘miracle’.

With October marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Jen is sharing her personal battle.

Her journey began in October 2011 when Jen – 23 weeks pregnant at the time – was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Two weeks later Jen had a mastectomy and began chemotherapy treatment.

Holding off the birth of her baby boy so he could grow for

as long as possible, Jen had a caesarean and welcomed baby William into the world at 34 weeks old. After her ‘little miracle’ was born, Jen continued chemotherapy.

“The statistics of it re-occurring were very minimal, like an 80 or 90 per cent chance of it not coming back. But it has come back and this time it’s not curable.”

In July this year the 38-yearold was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer – which means the cancer spread to her chest and lungs.

“Life is really precious and you have to make the most of every day and I think you

Women who have experienced mammograms know all about the ‘squishing’ and discomfort the test brings – but a new development in technology is changing all of that.

How? The answer is digital mammography – now available at Medex Radiology in Tauranga.

The 11th Ave practice is offering women digital mammograms, a system that can use less compression than the old film screen mammogram and with a more comfortable design.

Digital mammograms are electronically stored, so films can’t get lost, and they are always available for comparison to see changes in future mammograms.

Radiologist Dr Deborah McMurtrie is thrilled to have the technology in Tauranga, and says it’s an exciting advance in the early detection of breast cancer.

“The other absolutely great news is that digital imaging means women receive less radiation than the old film system.

“We are all exposed daily to background radiation, from the sun and the earth, totalling about 2mSv/year in New Zealand.”

“A mammogram is approximately 0.2mSv – which is only one tenth of our annual background radiation. And the new digital system means approximately 30 per cent less radiation during a mammogram than the old film system.”

Not only are digital mammograms easier to read, but digital is particularly advantageous for women with difficult mammographically dense breasts.

“It’s all good news for the future of early breast cancer detection in the Bay of Plenty,” says Deborah.

She says women who have tried the new technology describe the experience as “a breeze”, and “far more comfortable”.

Antioxidants & inflammation Researchers now know that tissue damage from free radicals is closely linked with inflammation.

In some diseases free radicals damage cells and tissues, which then triggers unwanted inflammation. In others the inflammation comes first, generating a massive increase in tissue free radical production.

With osteoarthritis, free radical damage comes first, followed by inflammation.

If antioxidant defences are poor, free radicals damage the cells that maintain cartilage, which causes thinning of cartilage.

Fortunately nature has provided potent anti-inflammatory compounds that can reduce both free radical damage and associated inflammation.

Last week we discussed the grape-derived antioxidants, the OPCs from grape seeds and resveratrol from grape skins.

Another of my favourites is Acai berry extracts.

This amazing Amazonian palm fruit is loaded with

anti-aging, anti-antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. Look for the really potent 5:1 extracts and target 500-1000mg daily.

This can help with energy, circulation and are very anti-inflammatory.

The best formulations combine Acai with grape seed OPC and resveratrol.

Both turmeric and ginger have antiinflammatory qualities and can really help reduce tissue inflammation.

Turmeric contains curcumin, which is both a potent antioxidant and powerful anti-inflammatory agent. It is very beneficial for arthritis and most inflammatory problems.

Ginger contains compounds called gingerols which likewise exhibit both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Both are easy to get from diet but I do add curcumin extracts to various antioxidant formulas.

A great way to get the benefits from ginger is to grate 1-2 teaspoons of ginger root then soak in boiling water for 5+ minutes and drink. Ginger is good for nausea and very calming.

How good are your energy levels?

At this time of year we often find ourselves low on energy and open to the flu or viruses.

Knight vision If you always fancied yourself as a knight in shining armour or a medieval damsel then this Sunday is your chance to relive the historic drama of combat and culture with a medieval re-enactment event.

The Northern Horde, the Western Bay’s medieval re-enactment group, is offering anyone interested a chance to have a go at sword-wielding combat at an open day. The event, as part of the Play in the Bay outdoor activities promotion

in October, gives people an introduction to basic equipment handling safety before they have a chance to practise combat in a controlled environment.

The Northern Horde’s Captain Charlie Tapsell describes the appeal of re-enactment as an exciting combination of history and sport.

Charlie is a passionate medieval enthusiast who earlier this year was a member of the New Zealand team which fought at the international Battle of the Nations competition in France.

He says Tauranga’s Horde is one of the leading groups in the country, consistently

The second annual mass CrossFit event will see teams of four complete physically demanding tasks, from push-ups and pull-ups to lifting massive weights and manoeuvring gigantic tyres.

CrossFit is one of the country’s fastest growing fitness routines and last year Mount CrossFit organisers Tim PatonTapsell, Luke McGruer

and John Templeton organised the first large scale national competition. Seventy teams of two men and two women competed for the inaugural title, with Auckland’s CrossFit HPU taking the win.

This year more than 330 competitors, including two teams from Australia, have signed up for round two, and more than 1000 sup-

porters and spectators from across the country are expected to attend at ASB Baypark.

Among the 30 volunteers running the event is 35-year-old mother Helen Armistead – whose life has been transformed since joining Mount CrossFit two years ago.

Weighing 115kg at the time, and wearing size 22 jeans, Helen has lost 40kg in the last 24 months, whittling down to size 12 jeans.

For someone who hadn’t exercised since university, Helen now completes CrossFit three times a week, and says it’s dramatically increased her confidence.

"CrossFit has added years to my life. My asthma has improved and I can keep up with, and enjoy, my four-and-a-half year old daughter.”

During the nationals, Helen will be head scorekeeper as her way of giving back to the sport she attributes with providing her a ‘new lease on life’.

She hopes to compete in the event herself in the next few years.

School vandalised

Studying how young volunteers stepped up to help with the 2011 Rena disaster has helped Sarah Lockwood secure a prestigious scholarship.

The Tauranga student has been researching how youth volunteers organise themselves during crisis events, including focussing on the clean-up efforts of the Rena oil spills.

Sarah’s research into the Rena response found GenY (aged 16-29) volunteers were motivated, enthusiastic and innovative, and responded in unique ways, often away from the confines of official response efforts.

“As a GenY volunteer during the Rena crisis myself, I was in a unique position to find out directly from other

GenY volunteers what this form of crisis volunteering meant, and how their social networking, use of technology and speed, impacted the way they responded,” says Sarah.

“Youth are naturally spontaneous and socially connected so things often get done more quickly. This kind of response is well suited to the changing and unpredictable demands experienced during crises.”

Her efforts have won her a Fulbright New Zealand Travel Award to speak at a conference in the United States next year.

Sarah will travel to Chicago in November 2014 to speak at the National Communications Association Convention and while there she will also visit a number of universities to collaborate on research.

More than just skin deep Restoring village history Children from the Lavender House Kiwi Kids Club have helped to restore what some believe is a historic kahikatea forest area by planting hundreds of small trees.

As many as 400 trees, each about eight inches tall, were planted on Saturday at the Historic Village forest through the Out of School Care and Recreation programme for youngsters in Tauranga. About three years ago, pupils at Tauranga Waldorf School gifted the kahikatea trees to Historic

Village’s organiser of biodiversity and sustainability Noel Pederson. Noel has since nurtured the trees, getting them ready to plant in the village forest.

Noel plans to plant the small trees in bundles of about four and nurture their growth during this year’s summer season.

Eczema, or Atopic Dermatitis, is one of the most common childhood complaints.

It is a red, itchy and inflamed rash that can occur anywhere on the child's body, usually including the face, neck, chest, inside creases of the elbows and knees.

Eczema can be dry and scaly, causing the skin to crack, or wet and weepy. Both types are intensely itchy and children will often scratch until their skin bleeds. Secondary bacterial infections of the skin are common.

Eczema is strongly linked to food allergy or intolerance and

‘leaky gut’. Food culprits include dairy, wheat, eggs, soy, nuts, fish and shellfish.

Environmental allergens include dust mites, mould, pollens, animal dander. Stress and anxiety can also trigger eczema.

There is a family link to eczema - if family members have atopic (allergic) diseases (eczema, asthma, hayfever) there is a higher chance the child will develop allergies.

Eczema can be frustrating and difficult to control. Identifying and avoiding any foods or other allergens that trigger it is the first step. Testing to identify the allergens can be helpful, but may not always be necessary.

Good holistic approaches to dealing with eczema include healing the gut wall, encouraging a healthy digestive system, stabilising immune reaction, soothing inflammation and controlling itch, reducing stress and anxiety, and good nutrition.

Herbal medicine can be effective.

Herbs can be used for inflammation and itch, to reduce the allergic reaction, to encourage healing and to support good digestive health.

Good quality oils to provide essential fatty acids are vital, and other important nutrients include zinc, flavonoids, Vitamin A and E, probiotics and prebiotics.

Papamoa Primary School is launching its new logo and website with a rebranding ceremony at 2pm on Monday, October 14.

Hundreds of Tauranga children are busy creating the cardboard ‘buddies’ to be used in the country’s third annual Buddy Day next month – a day dedicated to child abuse awareness.

Child Youth & Family figures show more than 21,000 confirmed cases of child abuse in the last year – numbers considered to be

only the tip of the iceberg, says Child Matters CEO Anthea Simcock.

Buddy Day revolves around life-size cardboard children – ‘buddies’ – which are decorated by school children prior to the event and then adopted by adults who look after the buddies for the day – taking them into their communities and workplaces to generate conversations about child abuse and what every adult can do help protect children.

Free pregnancy centre A free clinic offering help to women facing unexpected pregnancies is opening in Tauranga next week.

The Pregnancy Choice Centre will include free pregnancy testing and counselling with the aim of helping women unsure of whether to carry on with their pregnancies or have an abortion.

Director Janice Tetley-Jones, who set up Pregnancy Choice telephone service last year, says the new centre will provide women with full information on all the options available to them.

“We’d like to see women given all the information they need to be able to make a fully-informed choice.” Janice says the centre will also help Tauranga women in practical ways, with an on-site op shop featuring clothing for women, children and babies as well as maternity gear and baby equipment; and, in the future, classes on parenting. There will be two counselling rooms, a conference centre and a playroom.

Tauranga Eas Winter progress update The Tauranga Eastern Link project is ahead of schedule. The forecast completion date was mid 2016, but thanks to a mild winter and great progress by the construction teams, the completion has been brought forward six months to late 2015. The project is now nearing the half way point and the progress made over winter includes: Kaituna River bridge

Domain Road and Te Maunga

The Kaituna River bridge was opened to construction traffic in June.

The bridge, at 150 metres in length, is the longest of the seven bridges being built on the TEL. It has four lanes, two in each direction, and a pedestrian/cycleway on one side of the bridge.

Traffic switches at Domain Road and Te Maunga occurred in August. The State Highway 2 northbound slip lane was reopened at Domain Road and drivers are on a new section of the road at Te Maunga whilst the southbound lanes and Te Maunga Lane (the new residential access lane) are being constructed.

Mangatawa interchange The wall panels, street lighting and protection barriers have been installed on one side of Mangatawa interchange.

A road of national significance

Reminder of where the Tauranga Eastern Link goes Most of the new road is out of view from the public, as it travels through flat dairy paddocks, across sand dunes and over the Kaituna River, between Te Maunga and Paengaroa. The four-laned tolled highway will deliver benefits that will be felt throughout the Bay; improved safety, more efficient freight movements from east and central parts of the region, travel time savings for all motorists, economic benefits for the local communities and a stimulus to growth across the region.

Why is it tolled?

Future construction programme

Tolling the TEL has enabled construction of the Bay’s largest roading project to start 5-10 years earlier than initially planned.

It will feature an electronic tolling system which will allow free flowing traffic. Motorists will not need to stop to pay the toll.

The system will feature vehicle registration plate recognition. Motorists will be able to pay via account, online or over the phone. As an alternative to the tolled route, drivers can still use the existing highway through Te Puke.

The toll gantry will be removed once the debt and financing costs are repaid. This is currently anticipated to take 35 years following the completion of the project.

A good dose of hot tomato fever After the worst of the winter’s chill passes I am taken Like spring follows winter, there is one weather pattern that seems by the settled weather and sunny days – so I eagerly to get me every year in September or October – and if you’re a keen in declare that spring is well and truly here. Those little gardener like myself, you’re probably the same. tomato seedlings, chillies and basil I have been lovingly

tending from seed, I optimistically decide are ready to head into the great outdoors.

Having finally learned from the past, I wisely knew it was far too early to plant out the chillies and eggplants – that’s a job diaried for early November – but with the protection of cloches I am certain the tomatoes and basil will be fine.

So went the rationalisation in early September when I transferred them from inside.

For the next few weeks I watched the plants quietly grow, feeling all the smarter for getting a head start.

Then of course there was the late cold snap – I only realised just how low the temperature had fallen when I saw the snap-frozen seedlings.

That of course is why the rule of thumb with tomatoes is to only plant them out at Labour Weekend.

Growing tomato plants is a tradition for most gardeners – they are pretty easy to grow and so versatile on the table. The hard part comes later in dealing with blight and pests, so it’s critical to also prepare the soil properly with plenty of organic matter then begin regularly feeding with a mixed fertiliser after the first fruit sets.

understand. The Warrant of Fitness will be informed by relevant overseas and New Zealand research, for example evaluation of Warm Up New Zealand initiatives to retrofit insulation.

The Government has not made any decision on regulating standards of rental properties in the private market but in our experience when the Government puts these proposals forward and tests them on their own business model, it is so they can iron out any defects so that they can ultimately force it onto private owners and landlords.

What their objective with this Warrant of Fitness is to have better insulated and warmer homes so the occupants can lead healthier and more productive lives.

Any decisions will be made following implementation of a Warrant of Fitness in Housing New Zealand properties and will include consideration of cost-benefit analysis and implications for tenants and landlords.

The Government will be interested to learn from the experience of Otago University, the Green Building Council, local authorities and other organisations which are considering implementing voluntary Warrant of Fitness-type schemes.

Consenting woes I read with interest the recent media coverage of Tauranga City Council and the inability to meet consenting time frames.

The Certified Builders Association understands the frustration of owners and builders, who feel they’re left hanging as plans are submitted into the abyss of consenting. This is not unique to Tauranga; other councils also battle with the constant grid of meeting the shifting goal posts of regulatory requirements.

Debt versus services

The constant peak and trough cycles our industry is inflicted with put a lot of pressure on managing resources. One thing which would make plan processing more efficient is technology. For example, from the consumers’ perspective, tracking and communications to ensure more effective time-management of plan processing would help.

Other councils have made some advancement with this. However, it’s just not that simple in our sandpit. Tauranga City has massive debt and a costly stormwater problem at the Mount. These big ticket items will always get priority funding.

Our industry also needs to take some ownership of the problem. Many plans and specifications going through tighter regulatory checks simply are not up to grade. The council did not make the rules, however it’s expected to enforce them.

The Government has a vision to streamline consenting by balancing consenting resource against the risk demonstrated within the plans. In principle, this sounds like an effective management plan.

However, I have real concerns about taking away regulatory oversight with the quality of design and LBP performance throughout the country.

Add lem until very limp on juice, and most of the parmesan. Add all othe and mix well. Get in there with r ingredients your hands to smother the leaves, pile into a baking dish and top with the rest of the parm esan. Bake for 20 minutes at 170 degrees Cels ius.

Steaming the kale breaks dow n the fibres, and baking helps concentrate the flavour.

Complete year-round action against pests A new option for pest control is now available in Tauranga.

Harry Stoddart saw the region’s need for a total year-round preventative pest control programme where residents can get total all-season pest protection.

After talking to residents, Harry found the idea of not having to worry about pests was a common want. He also noticed many other pest control companies promoting one-off pest treatment programmes – but nothing for long-term prevention.

So Harry joined EcoPest – a company offering unique, personalised plans for pest protection for residents and businesses – and started the franchise in the Bay. “We’re not just interested in providing one-off pest treatments, instead we are a working on the basis of a total pest protection plan, for commercial and residential,” says Harry.

This involves visiting a home, and assessing the building and section’s individual pest risks.

Mother’s despair at new disability scheme A Tauranga mother who cares for her two disabled adult children is questioning the Government’s decision to make severely disabled people employers of their parents or a family member.

The Funded Family Care scheme announced on October 1 sees highneeds disabled people having to employ their parents or other close family members, as well as oversee compliance tasks such as ACC levies and Kiwisaver contributions.

Jenny Noble thinks the scheme adds insult to injury for families caring for severely disabled adult family members.

Jenny is the field officer for the Lysosomal Storage Disease group in the Bay of Plenty.

Her children Hayden, 31, and Sarah, 28, were born with mucopolysaccharidoses – a form of LSD. “It’s very rare, they are the only two in New Zealand

with this disease. We have care workers come in the morning and help them out with housework, or taking them out into the community. “When the care workers go home, my husband and I take over their care.”

Jenny says making a disabled person responsible for their caregiver is a crazy decision.

“They have totally ignored the feedback from the carer alliance and other rare disease support groups on this matter. A more workable situation would have been that carers could have been paid directly by the Government as independent contractors.”

Animal antics at Aunty Abby’s Hey Sunners – what a stunner of a week it has been.

I hope you have all been getting out and enjoying the sunshine.

When the weather is this fine, you’ve got to make the most of it – and by that I mean getting up bright and early! 5am does it for me. Last weekend Saturday morning arrived and I awoke with all engines roaring.

The boss was away and left me with Aunty Abby. Problem is, Aunty Abby is a sleeper – I hear through the dog-vine she sometimes sleeps until 12pm at the weekend.

Well that wasn’t happening on my watch. So at 5am I made the executive decision that it was time to rise – there was plenty of eating,

playing, and more eating to be done! I scurried down the hall to be accosted by barrier number one: the bedroom door. No biggie, I thought, I just scratched that wooden blockade to my heart’s content. But not even that could awake my sleeping sitter. Here’s a key life lessons pooches: when scratching fails, bark. Bark until that door opens.

And open it did.

A sleepy Aunty Abby staggered back into her bed and pulled up the covers. She didn’t look ready for playing, or eating. So I jumped up on the bed and tackled barrier number two: the ignore.

It’s pretty hard to ignore a gorgeous specimen like myself, but in the odd case it happens, a good

lick of the face usually does it…Nope, nothing. Aunty Abby’s one tough cookie to crack.

Scratching, barking, bed jumping and licking – and the subtle sound of snores could still be heard.

I had no choice but to admit defeat. If you can’t beat ’em – you know!

We eventually got up at 10am. Aunty Abby said it was a compromise. The only thing she compromised was a morning full of Frisbee! But we did get out in the sun afterwards.

There was so much playing, that I found myself in need of a wee nap in the afternoon.

Baking up creative, sweet tasting fun for all ages Cupcakes…it doesn’t matter how old you are, they can brighten up anyone’s day.

Cupcakes have become very popular in the last few years and there are so many creative people out there who spend hours decorating them – only to have them eaten in minutes. I like to make the following recipe and freeze them un-iced.

I often will pull them out of the freezer when my daughter Bianca wants to have a tea party with her friends, and they can ice them.

It’s so much fun for all ages.

Cupcake: Ingredients

150g softened butter 1 1/2c caster sugar 3 eggs 2tsp vanilla essence 3c self-raising flour 1 1/4c milk 1/2c coconut (optional) Method

Preheat oven to 190 degrees Celsius. Beat butter until smooth, then add sugar and beat until light and fluffy.

Add eggs and mix well.

Now add sifted flour, milk and vanilla, and beat until smooth.

Place paper baking cups in a cupcake tin, and pour in mixture until each cup is two thirds full (don’t overfill or they will form peaks).

Bake for 20 minutes until golden, or until they spring back when lightly pressed.

Turn out onto a wire rack to cool while you prepare the icing.

Butter cream icing: Ingredients 100g softened butter 1 1/2c icing sugar 1-2Tbsp milk Strawberry lollies Method

Beat butter until it is pale and fluffy. Sift in the icing sugar and milk, mix until you have a light, fluffy mixture. Add extra milk if you need a softer consistency.

Spread or pipe icing over cupcakes and top with decorations as desired. Allow to set before serving.

Contributing to an amazing cause This week I’d like to draw attention to a very important event on the annual calendar that’s now in its sixth year running, appropriately called ‘The Pink Walk’ which dedicates 100 per cent of funds raised to Tauranga’s Breast Cancer Support Service.

Starting down on The Strand at 6pm on Wednesday, October 16, residents are encouraged to complete a 2.8km walk around downtown Tauranga – dressed in your hot pink get-up of course – and for a mere $5 entry fee through House of Travel or Smiths Sports Shoes, you will help to support this very worthy cause.

Unfortunately, there won’t be many families, friends, or associates who this dreaded ‘speed-bump’ hasn’t touched and to have support or information available as we go through this experience is immensely invaluable.

We’ll be offering ‘The Pink Flamingo Cocktail’, a rich blend of strawberries, Chambord, ginger and Chocolate Absolut with juice or cream, that we’ve created for this special event, where all purchases of this cocktail will be donated again to the breast cancer awareness charity.

Human condition inspires work Well-known for his talent with clay, a Matua artist has again earned himself a finalist place in the country’s most prestigious ceramic competition.

John Roy’s ceramic piece titled ‘Void’, depicting a carved brick-like human figure, is one of 60 finalist works selected from more than 200 entries in the 2013 Portage Ceramic Awards.

“I like to use the human figure in my work, as it provides an easy point of reference for the viewer, allowing them to draw upon their own personal experiences in interpreting the work,” says John.

“I try to use this as a starting point to introduce thoughts on the human condition, to convey a sense of emotion or feeling in the work.”

Living in Tauranga much of his adult life, John graduated from Wanganui Polytechnic with a fine arts degree majoring in ceramics in 1997, and continues to work with the medium, winning numerous awards for his sculptures.

He has pieces in the James Wallace Arts Trust Collection and the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

In 2007 he was commissioned

by Creative New Zealand to produce eight trophies for the Creative Places Awards.

The nationally-recognised contemporary artist says it’s nice to be a Portage award finalist again – he’s been named seven times before – but it’s been awhile between accolades.

“I’m going up for the ceremony and I’m looking forward to it.”

Working with clay for about 25 years, John says the medium can be tricky.

“When you’re making it, it has to be the right firmness,” says John.

“So things takes time, as you have to allow it to dry or it will collapse…so you kind of work on it in layers.”

Tonight’s Auckland ceremony names the Premier Portage Award winner, with a prize of $15,000. Also up for grabs are two inaugural international residencies – onemonth’s residency at Denmark’s International Ceramic Research Centre and another to Canada’s Medalta Potteries.

Coutts’ success is a national effort

I endorse Roger Rabbits’ attitude towards Russell Coutts (The Weekend Sun, October 4).

But there’s more to state.

Many people believe Russell Coutts and Brad Butterworth did nothing wrong, and should be congratulated and emulated.

They’re professional sailors and good on them for chasing the money and becoming rich on their abilities.

The problem I see is they didn’t get those abilities and opportunities in a vacuum. As wet-behind-the-ears-sailors-innappies it was the effort and abilities of a huge number of New Zealanders that helped put them in the position they eventually

found themselves in.

Thousands of unpaid volunteers, at sailing clubs around the country, organised and assisted them in countless competitions during decades as they learned to sail and compete.

More individuals and companies sponsored them and their equipment. The NZ taxpayer also sponsored and supported them.

Every America’s Cup sailed in NZ brings hundreds of millions of dollars into the economy, providing direct and indirect benefits to individuals, organisations and taxpayers, who assisted in creating the talent of Coutts and Butterworth - and others who

But to abandon a well-paid job with your country, when it is depending on you and the opportunity exists to return the assistance and trust provided to you during many decades is very, very low. Coutts should never have been knighted, at least by this country.

With respect, may I suggest that any such issues of those raised by Mr Clarkson could never be implemented by a council such as we currently have.

The commentary contained suggested common sense beyond the capability of those as presently elected; and I would be absolutely shocked if the four candidates mentioned within this piece came to be elected.

They are clearly far to informed, impartial and ‘in touch’ with the community to be elected to replace the ‘blinkered’ incumbents. What are you thinking by allowing such a rational advertisement? Shame on you.

How does this relate to our seniors, who cannot afford this and that, and young folk in the same situation?

Victims of inadequacy?

One of the main problems New Zealand has today is that idiocy reigns supreme.

An individual, on September 30 at about 7.55am, on Newstalk ZB was advocating that children should have a say in how council governs the cities.

One also doubts the competency of the people who gave the man precious radio airtime.

We have adults running councils now; and few have a more than

inadequate ability to make valid and wise decisions on how our city should be run.

Look at Tauranga.

Just to name a couple left of wise decisions made; Bell block and Route K. We are victims of inadequacy up and down the country at the hands of less-than-competent councils.

And the Government is included in this summation.

What about the people who vote? They vote the same people in election after election, in spite of

appallingly bad performance levels.

So appallingly bad that the Goverment has had to shut a couple down and put a statutory manager in. And yes, those incompetents were voted in.

So one could imagine the turmoil of allowing children to have a say in what direction the council should move.

I guess instead of a scramble for money there would be a scramble for lollies, and a Wendy’s van on every street corner, which when I think about it would be cheaper than many of the unwise decisions councils make.

In 1989 the Lange Government threw a lifeline to the failing Tauranga City Council by arranging a marriage between it and Mount Maunganui Borough Council and Papamoa.

What happened to the reluctant bride’s dowry of money, property and an increased rates contributions base?

Prior to amalgamation, Mount Maunganui Borough Council set a record as never having a deficit in its history, something which the initial Tauranga City Council had never achieved even with its

then higher rates base.

To help their new bride feel at home her rates were increased; and later on-going tolls for a paid harbour bridge were retained - an iniquitous and inequitable act.

All that extra money and support was not enough to get the books into the black. What went wrong?

One might have thought a realistic management philosophy would have emerged within the new Tauranga District Council towards paying off debt and developing a responsible direction to live within its means, such as a save and

pay as you go strategy.

However, that did not happen.

Instead, it seems that a compulsive credit card shopper syndrome has now emerged. It would be interesting to know if our Tauranga District Mayor and councillors have managed their household budgets as prudently as they have handled our council budget.

If they have, some may be sweating on being re-elected into power, so they can retain their salaries to manage loan repayments.

Is TCC a credit card shopper?

Un-opened medicines wasted in this country The sickness of my husband (diagnosed February 2012), was terminal. He recently died of cancer.

During this time a considerable supply of prescription medicine was prescribed for him and for myself (also feeling poorly).

Naturally, not all have been used and some are still unopened, some never used and some partially used but left in their original container. Not one is expired or expiring any time soon. I asked where I could take them. The answer was: take them to a pharmacy, which would arrange for them to be destroyed. Destroyed?

I couldn’t believe it. This is a big waste of money, mainly from the Government, because all of the medicines taken by residents are subsidised.

In my country (Italy), and in Europe, I know that medicines which can be used again are collected by authorised, non-profit organisations to be re-distributed to people in need and those needing them in undeveloped countries.

I cannot get my head around this situation I’ve encountered in New Zealand. My question is: Is this true (the disposing of perfectly unopened, unused, good medications, here in New Zealand)? Or have I been given the wrong information? I believe something should be done about this.

Bay of Plenty District Health Board responds: While the recycling of medicines might seem to be a cost-effective way of reducing the pharmaceutical budget, and sometimes is advocated on this basis, there are a number of reasons why medicines must not be recycled.

They include: 1. Storage conditions. After the medicine has left the pharmacy its conditions of storage cannot be guaranteed. Incorrect storage may cause deterioration of the medicine. In addition, contamination may have been introduced through handling of loose solid dose forms, such as tablets.

2. Stability of the medicine. Once the medicine has been removed from the manufacture’s packaging, there is usually no stability data available. Batch numbers and expiry dates are often omitted when medicines are repackaged. While this is not usually an issue on dispensed medicines, as these are prescribed for specific persons, conditions and for set time periods, if recycled that important information would not be available.

3. Identity of the medicine. Often it is difficult to establish beyond reasonable doubt the identity of a medicine, especially as often occurs, when medicines are transferred into other containers once the patient gets them home. The medicine specified on the label therefore may not be the medicine in the container.

4. Recall issues. Manufacturer’s medicines’ recalls are difficult enough to trace to the public level without introducing the problem of recycled medicines.

The World Health Organisation’s ‘Guidelines for Drug Donations’ requires that unused medicines returned to pharmacies are not donated for use in developing nations, even in emergency situations – on the grounds of lack of guarantee about safety, quality and continued efficacy.

No-vehicle streets please There have been many letters and newspaper articles about our Tauranga CBD parking areas.

It has been proven overseas that some cities have turned their very busy streets into shopping malls, with no vehicles, and businesses have experienced increased financial turnovers and incomes.

Our Wellington City has one or two streets with no vehicles. For example, Cuba St has no vehicles, instead it has seats, fountains, and

a beautiful area to shop and enjoy poeple’s company. Some cities have been building roofs over streets, making their streets even more comfortable for shoppers.

Those businesses have experienced increased incomes.

Tauranga’s very busy Cameron Rd, near the Wharepai Domain, could be closed to all vehicles and turned into a shopping mall.

Mini electric trains and carriages could shuttle shoppers to and fro

from a proposed carpark area on the Wharepai Domain, then back into Cameron Rd. Vehicles belching poisonous gases, fumes and dust are a ‘no no’ in busy, narrow streets. So I’d imagine those business owners would gladly contribute money to building roof over their street area to benefit from an increased amount of shoppers, and in turn income; all without vehicles parking on the street. Mammogram milestone As October, known as Breast Cancer Awareness month, is here, women over 40 years of age are being urged to have a regular mammogram. It’s nearly 10 years since we presented a petition of 125,000 signatures to Parliament in 2003. Our petition was all about ‘Early detection is your best protection’, by calling for an expansion to the age of Breast Screening.

Previously, access was restricted to women aged 50-64 years. But subsequently the Government extended the

eligible age to 45-69 years.

The upcoming 10th anniversary is a celebration of all those people, nationwide, who signed the petition and walked the streets with their clipboards, to make a difference.

With all of your help, we moved a reluctant Minister of Health and achieved a triumph owned by all. So thank you; and please remember to have a mammogram from age 40.

Parliament and politicians need technology upgrades New Zealand used to be a leader in democracy. For example, last month we celebrated New Zealand becoming the world’s first nation to grant women the right to vote in national elections.

Now it is high time New Zealand politicians flicked out of the 19th Century and became users of the ‘Age of Communication’.

The grandiose House of Parliament is a waste of time and money. Let politicians work from their offices and have a normal life with their families.

An unlikely yet fantastic musical hub This week I had planned a wrap up of what's happening around the area's recording studios. But then I visited Soundtree.

I was going to write about what's happening at the Boatshed too, where Kokomo are currently recording a new album and where prolific local artist/songwriter Dave Roy has just called a wrap on not one, not two, but three full CDs of new original songs (yes, there will be reviews!).

THE PAPERBOY Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron - Dir: Lee Daniels The Paperboy is based on a novel by Pete Dexter, the man who wrote the award-winning Paris Trout, so it’s a fair guess that it might not end all happily ever after. And it makes it less of a surprise when the film’s initially blackly comic tone slowly drifts into simply black.

But the film has a lot going or it: a smart screenplay and a great cast for a start. Zac Efron is okay, John Cusack and Matthew

The story wanders a bit, as if not sure which bits to leave out from the book, and it could happily lose ten minutes, but the sweaty swampy Florida locations are wonderfully realised and the seedy cast of secondary characters bring a real atmosphere to proceedings.

Those expecting a tight journalistic detective story will be disappointed. This presents a

Neil Jordan has already made one very handsome vampire flick, the not-entirely-successful Interview With The Vampire. The rich colour pallet and serious tone is reminiscent of that and of Byzantium the underlying themes (the difficulties of an eternal life of blood-drinking) not dissimilar. It has two female vampires (“mum” Gemma Arterton, “schoolgirl” Saoirse Ronan) living in a run-down coastal town where their secrets are in danger of being exposed. It’s a melancholy films, as much a character study as it is a thriller or horror film. Those into the vampire genre will be impressed by this thoughtful approach.

OKAY. How does one judge a film like Fast & ? Well, it’s faster than number Furious 6 4 and number 2. And it’s a lot more furious than 3 and 4. But it’s neither quite as fast or furious as number 5. All sorted? The sixth instalment comes on like a sequel to part 5, which was the one that reunited the original team and then added extra rock in the form of Dwayne Johnson. He’s back again along with – seemingly – everyone else from the entire franchise (even the dead ones). It’s completely over-the-top, absolute nonsense, but the stunts are again ridiculously entertaining.

You’ve never seen anything like it before, but that isn’t necessarily a recommendation when it comes to Sharknado . In deference to Truth in Advertising I can reveal that it does indeed feature a “Sharknado”, as high winds whip the California coast, carrying sharks through the air onto the heads of the alarmed local population. A lot of terrible actors (and John Heard, who has clearly hit on hard times) scream, run, fight and get eaten. This is clearly not a movie to watch by yourself but, with a group of friends and sufficient supplies of intoxicants, you could have a lot of fun with it.

Dark Skies Made on a limited budget, its trailer and cover art may suggest a visual effects feast but it ain't. It centres on the Barrett family – mum (Keri Russell), dad and a couple of kids – who are living quietly in suburbia till things start going bump in the night.

At first they think someone has broken in but the weirdness increases until... Well, that would give it away I guess. The tension builds admirably, but it's all a bit too much of a Signs retread, with none of that film's cleverness.

Young women struggling with abuse, depression, self-harm, and eating disorders, are the focus of a charity fun run/walk-a-thon this month.

Men, women and families are encouraged to attend ‘Walk for Hope’ at Ferguson Park on October 20, raising money for A Girl Called Hope.

The nationwide care programme helps women aged 16-28 going through life-threatening issues, by looking after them in a home in Auckland.

Tauranga volunteer Kelly Saxton says while the home is in Auckland – women come to the home from around the country.

“Ultimately, we would like to have homes throughout New Zealand.

“But it’s a funding issue.”

Kelly believes the number of women needing the charity’s help is growing, and she hopes Tauranga residents will get behind the charity.

“I think it’s something that needs to be supported more. It’s becoming more prevalent and open, most definitely.”

People can pre-register for the event by visiting: www.agirlcalledhope.co.nz ‘Walk for Hope’ is $10, and includes a 5km walk or 10km run/walk option. There will be spot prizes, entertainment, and A Girl Called Hope merchandise for sale.

As well as being a “great vehicle” for health and fitness, director Sarah Martin says dance is an outlet for people to express their feelings.

“It’s about kids being able to have the opportunity to express creativity and just express themselves. It’s a very social art form.”

A stellar performance from the champion group Hysteria is just one of the exciting displays and dances at the Open Day Term 4 event on Saturday, October 12 at Arataki Community Centre.

The free event, from 12pm-2pm, will also include Mai Fm, a sausage sizzle, prizes and giveaways.

The performances will be followed by auditions for the 2014 Junior Competitive Crews (2.30-4.30pm) and auditions for the Varsity Competition Crews (5-7pm).

White Sunday or ‘Children’s Day’ is a holiday in Samoa, falling on the second Sunday in October. It is a day for parents and communities to acknowledge and celebrate children. Special programmes during church services include scriptural recitations, Biblical story re-enactments and songs. Children receive gifts (often new clothing or school supplies) on White Sunday; and they’re allowed privileges normally reserved for elders, such as being the first to be served food at family meal time.

On White Sunday, Samoan women and children dress completely in white clothing. Men will wear white shirts with either white slacks or the traditional ‘ie faitaga’ form of the lavalava.

White Sunday, which is also celebrated in Tonga, is a holiday giving thanks to God for children. It became widespread in the 1920s in commemoration of Samoans who succumbed to the influenza epidemic of 1919. This

epidemic, introduced through the ambivalence of the New Zealand colonial administration, took the lives of one-fifth to one-quarter of the Samoan population, many of them children.

The people prayed earnestly for God to free them from the epidemic; and White Sunday is a day of commemoration and thanksgiving that the Lord rescued them.

Today, at St Enoch’s church, our Samoan families and children will share items and songs and lead the Sunday service. Come and bring friends to join in this special day.

Solidarity service at Changepoint Solidarity is something we share with others when we act together in pursuit of a common interest and purpose.

A group of workers may act in solidarity when they go on strike against unfair conditions, or a group of volunteers may work in solidarity to confront some natural disaster. One of the best examples of solidarity seen locally was the response to the recent news Family Planning was conducting abortions in Tauranga.

The common interest for 48 pastors representing most denominations was their belief that human life is sacred, and that respect for life is a basic tenet of society itself.

Without it, society as we know would fall apart.

In solidarity the 48 put their names to a public advertisement offering support to pregnant women and girls whose situation compelled them to consider an abortion. It was a moment when Jesus’ prayer “that they be one” took on real meaning.

The last 26 years has seen an annual inter-denominational service named “Solidarity in Respect for Life” held in a different church each year. It is sponsored by Voice for Life Bay of Plenty Charitable Trust, whose board and membership are also inter-denominational.

In recent years it has been joined as co-sponsor by Waipuna Hospice Incorporated. This year’s service is on Sunday, October 13 at Changepoint, at 6.30 pm.

It’s not about excusing the other person but about implying it is okay because you have forgiven them. It’s not giving permission to continue their hurtful actions, words or behaviour, because you have extended forgiveness.

It isn’t about reconciliation. It’s necessary to make a separate decision about whether to remain connected with the person you are forgiving or to protect yourself by maintaining a certain distance.

And forgiveness is not about forgiving once and for all – when it is something big it can be an on-going decision. Who are you refusing to forgive…how is it affecting your life?
