Save our city from bland and boring The big news this week is the revelation that Tauranga needs a new vision. The old one is apparently, well, short on vision, and the Chamber of Commerce is leading the call to snazz it up.

Chamber CEO Max Mason says Auckland’s five-word vision statement leaves Tauranga’s 67 words “bland and boring”.

Here at RR we have five words of vision: “Find Max some worthwhile tasks.”

Aww, sorry Max, we don’t really mean it, although we still can’t figure

why you have been bootlicking the foreign-owned, mediocre media in town.

Max is a good bloke, just confused where his loyalties and efforts should lie.

So maybe a five word vision along the lines of: “Find Max something to do” would fit the bill.

There are many local businesses out there, like ours, scratching their heads wondering what the chamber is really doing.

Worthwhile things. Promoting Australian-owned media interests shouldn’t be one of them.

Anyway, there must be great snappy aims for Tauranga. RR’s astute readers must be able to come up with some scintillating five-word vision statements for our fine city.

Vision suggestions

How about: “Not bland and boring anymore.”

“Okay now Hayden has gone.”

“See statues of Hairy Maclary.”

“Still here, despite the Rena.”

“Who needs a dumb museum?”

“Just like Auckland but with a slightly longer vision statement.”

Reality check

I’m sure every frazzled mother out there can only dream of the luxury of dumping the brats and whipping off to an exotic location with a couple of your celebrity girlfriends. Just how far out of touch with reality are these people? And society holds them up as role models?

Here’s a reality check: Let’s hear it for the real mothers out there, not the squillionnaire spoiled brat celebrities, who wouldn’t know a real day of hardship if it bit them on the Porsche.

Hip hooray to the real mums of the world. It’s Mothers’ Day this weekend and there are plenty of options in this edition of

the paper to help give your mum a special time.

The newsroom has received plenty of ideas for Mothers’ Day from entrepreneurial sources; including great ideas from a travel agent titled “Mother’s Day Escapes.”

We thought this would particularly appeal to mums in the Auckland Region Women’s Corrections Facility.

Surprise prise There’d be nothing better than to surprise Mum on her special day, by busting her out of jail. A Mother’s Day ‘great escape’ would be just the thing.

It would tie in nicely with yo new bracelet, (the home detention one.)

Ironically, one of the suggested travel destinations was a shopping tour and high tea in Sydney. That’s right: ship some more convicts there.

Another recommended destination from the agency is to a session of ‘Wicked, the Musical’. However we wonder the sensibility, if we are busting mum out of the clanger, then she is already clearly wicked and shouldn’t be given any encouragement?

Witherspoon’s excuse for trying the line “Don’t you know who I am?” on a police officer arresting her for disorderly conduct, has been attributed to her belief that her baby stole her brain. So she took a break in Mexico with a couple of buddies, Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore.

Great idea. Whenever I’m losing the plot, I simply take a long weekend away with Cameron and Drew and I find my focus returns sharper than ever. Couple of great gals, those two, for getting one’s head back in the right place.

Spotlighted City’s public art examined

The city’s lack of public art policy will be up for discussion when Tauranga Art Gallery hosts a public art forum next week.

On Tuesday, May 14 the gallery on Willow Street will host an evening to discuss public art around the city. It will include a visual presentation from Associate Professor Tyler – director of the Gus Fisher Gallery and curator of the University of Auckland’s art collection.

The forum comes as the first piece in the city council approved project for 15 Renaissance murals on city walls is put on hold.

Street artist Owen Dippie was due to start work on the mural of Michelangelo’s Medici Brothers on the city-owned warehouse on Dive Crescent this month.

Recent discussions have led to issues over the appropriateness of a Renaissance piece at the waterfront location.

Tauranga is one of the only cities in New Zealand that does not have a city council public art policy to guide the direction of art works. It instead decides on a case by case basis.

Tauranga Art Gallery director Penny Jackson says there are incumbent dangers in not having a clear cut policy. “We need to think about how our city looks, and we want that look to evolve over time. With a well-structured policy you can have a measure of control over the city’s look. Good public art invites interaction and excitement.”

Penny hopes the forum will drive a community consulted public art policy before council.

“A policy doesn’t prescribe what the art will actually look like, but rather put in place the process.”

She would like to see a panel including urban planners, architects, iwi, gallery professionals and artists who use a set of criteria to select and manage long term projects.

Mayor Stuart Crosby personally supports a public art policy. “There is currently an ad-hoc system. The danger in this is it can be every narrow and I think the public want more variety in public art.”

He says the recent issues over the Dive Crescent mural show the need for a policy.

In 2010 TCC resolved not to develop a public art policy and the issue of public art has not been back before council since then, says Stuart.

He believes there is now enough momentum in the community to bring a policy back into council at the next policy and strategy submissions process in September.

There are hopes council will look towards a policy that ties into Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s public art policy that aims to encourage artworks relevant to the site, celebrates the landscape and cultural identity of people and places around the district.

WBOPDC public art policy is due to be renewed in the 2013/2014 financial year and Mayor Ross Paterson says council will be looking to simplify it to ensure it meets the future needs of the district.

Since it was established in 2009 WBOPDC policy has helped guide the creation of the historical markers and Pou in Maketu and sculpture in the Gerald Crapp Reserve in Omokoroa.

But the political animal has no immediate plans for a parliamentary career. “I’m very interested in politics and current affairs. I could get into it later, but not for quite a while,” says Tom, who aims to call the shots in another arena – as a sports broadcaster when he leaves school.

Tom, who was picked by Mount Maunganui -based independent MP Brendan Horan to attend the two-day youth parliament, says it is a major honour to be selected and he will use the opportunity to learn about the political process in New Zealand.

Marie Kent is stepping onto a plane headed for France today, where she will compete alongside three team mates in the first of five regattas in the Women’s International Match Racing Series.

For the 20-year-old Otumoetai College graduate, this is the first step in her professional sailing career and one she hopes will only lead to bigger and better things.

But she knows it won’t be a walk in the park – or a sail along the stream.

“It’s the first step to being the best, and I think it’s going to be a really steep learning curve, but I think we’ll be able to hold our own.”

Marie and her five team members – all in their earlier twenties – make up one of, if not, the youngest team in the competition series.

The team, who sail together in Auckland where Marie now lives and studies, applied for entry into the competition series and were both thrilled and

shocked to be accepted five weeks ago.

“It was a mixture of excitement and panic, but we’re all really excited.

“It’s kind of the first step onto the professional league,” she says.

“It’s a pretty cool for us to have this opportunity.”

They will sail in either four person or six person boats, against Olympic teams in five regattas this year: in France, Korea, Denmark, New York and Sweden.

The daughter of Tauranga Boat Sales owner Brian Kent, Marie has spent much of her life on and around the water – and she says it was a natural progression to the professional league.

“I’ve always been around boats and Dad’s been sailing since he was little.

“I got into dinghies here at the Tauranga Yacht Club and when I moved up to Auckland, I joined a youth programme, training and doing regattas.

Businessman admits drug ring role

Tauranga businessman Gary John Read admitted to smuggling precursor drugs from Thailand used to make up millions of dollars’ worth of methamphetamine.

The 45-year-old appeared in the High Court at Rotorua this week where he was initially due to defend the charges but instead pleaded guilty to 74 charges.

The former party pill company owner is charged with numerous drug importation and dealing charges including 71 counts of importing pseudoephedrine, possession of pseudoephedrine and methamphetamine for supply, participating in an organised criminal group and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Read was arrested as part of an operation by the Organised and Financial Crime Agency in 2011.

Driver flees Papamoa crash

Police are looking for the driver of a ute who fled the scene after crashing at high speed into a bank in Papamoa on Monday night.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Parton Road about 4.50pm.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the driver lost control crashing the ute into a ditch.

Issues halt city mural

Iwi objections have put the city’s Renaissance art project on hold while political issues are sorted over the first painting in the series on Dive Crescent.

Tauranga street artist Owen Dippie was expected to have commenced work on the first of 15 Renaissance interpretations – a painting of the Medici brothers based on sculptor Michelangelo’s famous statues – to be painted on city walls.

But a meeting arranged last week with iwi representatives from Ngai Tamarawaho and Nagati Tapu has raised issues over the appropriateness of a Renaissance piece on the council owned warehouse next to the waterfront.

Underground Waihi gold mine

A new goldmine will be built under Waihi after Newmont Waihi Gold was granted resource consent by Hauraki District Council.

The consent means Newmont Waihi Gold will begin underground tunnelling to the mine site, 150 to 300metres beneath Gladstone and Walmsley Roads in Waihi East.

The Correnso mine will be the first mine to be dug directly underneath a residential area.

Fresh from wresting the Secondary Schools 50km title from Trident High School in the second annual BOP Coast ‘n’ Country Cycle Challenge, the 13-strong road cycling team claimed double success at the Waikato Bay of Plenty Championships in Te Awamutu this week.

Backing up from the weekend’s team title, Mitchell Lowe claimed the Under 14 crown while Theo Wright recorded consecutive victories taking out the Under 15 title with team mate Jack Wilson placing second.

Tauranga Boys’ College Road Cycling team manager Johnathan Patchell says it’s exciting times for the team.

“I’m quite excited and ecstatic

[winning the 50km title] as it was our first real hit out of the season.”

Leading from start to finish, eight of the squad worked hard from the beginning pushing the pace before 13-year-old Theo Wright took the line first ahead of Cullen Browne and his elder brother Sebastian (Wright) in a time of 1hr 27mins.

“I was pretty happy with my time and we worked together quite well,” says Theo. “It’s pretty good beating him but I guess he wasn’t too happy.”

Plans are in place to develop the team into a cycling powerhouse setting their sights on the North Island and NZ Secondary School Championships in June and September.

“It is about building the profile of road cycling and this is a good opportunity to see how they ride as a group and work together in a competitive race,” says Johnathan.

The team will also defend their title in the Round Taupo Schools Tauranga Boys’ College cyclists Theo, 13, and Sebastian, 16, Relay competition later this year.

Protest to legalise cannabis Gaming the honey pot A group of Tauranga people want to see cannabis legalised and be taxed and regulated like regular tobacco.

Tauranga’s first Legalise Cannabis protest or ‘J Day’ was held at Yatton Park on Saturday and saw about 30 people show their support for marijuana to be made legal.

The protest consisted of people walking around and making their opinions heard as music played in the park.

Tauranga protest organiser Blaze, who did not want to give his real name but says most people know him as Blaze, wants people to have the right to smoke cannabis much like they do tobacco.

“Cannabis can be harmful. But a cheeseburger is also harmful to the body but you don’t see that being illegal.

“People should have the choice

to be able to use it if they want.”

He says thousands of sick people are already using medicinal cannabis illegally.

Cannabis is used by numerous people suffering a wide range of medical conditions including glaucoma and cancer. “If they get caught they can often be arrested and charged as criminals,” says Blaze.

“People already use it for recreational use. What we want is for people to be able to use it medicinally without the stigma that comes with it. Make it fair for everyone.”

Paying taxes on cannabis, like people do when they buy tobacco, is one of Blaze’s suggestions, as a way to regulate cannabis use.

“High tobacco prices have put a lot [of people] off smoking.

But you will always get someone who will want to smoke no matter the cost. The same can be said about cannabis.”

A fun iPhone and iPad game developed by Mount Maunganui designers Flightless has become the latest hot global app after it was highlighted by Apple as the App of the Week this week.

Creative director John O’Reilly says it’s “mind-blowing” with more than 2million downloads of Bee Leader since April 25.

“We are just stoked. It’s great to have all those eyeballs on the game and enjoying it.”

It is now the number one free game in more than 15 countries, reaching the third most popular free downloaded iPad game worldwide and number six free iPhone game.

John, who shifted up from Wellington to set up the business two years ago, says they had good interest in the game when they released it a year ago – topping app downloads in Australia and New Zealand.

The game challenges players to take on the role of bee leader to help bees collect nectar and fill their hives with honey.

They have not made a lot of money out of the free app’s success, with funds coming from advertising and partnerships to promote other apps.

“The good thing is we’ve got a large base of eyeballs on the game which we will be able to leverage off.”

It took nine months work for the three-person company to develop the game and John is brimming over with about six “great ideas” for games they want to develop.

Running up Papamoa Hills and the Mount, and blasting the legs at a few hard gym sessions, were final touches to the training schedule before the Te Puke Fire Brigade take on their next challenge.

A team of eight fire fighters from Te Puke Fire Brigade have been preparing for the 2013 Sky Tower Stair Challenge tomorrow.

On May 11, the challenge will see more than 480 fire fighters, carrying 25kg on their backs, battle their way up the Auckland tower to raise money for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

This is the second year Te Puke volunteer fire fighter Mathew Cooke has completed the 1103 step climb and he is ready for round two.

Final tweaks to Mathew’s training phase included climbs up Papamoa Hills and the Mount, and gym sessions that focused purely on his legs, to earn a week’s pre-event recovery leading up to tomorrow’s step climb.

Last year, the fastest Te Puke member completed the challenge in 15 minutes. This year, Mathew hopes to complete the climb in less than his record last year, of 20 minutes and 42 seconds.

“If I could do it in 15 I’d be over the moon. But I think 17 minutes is probably where I’m at this year.”

Mathew says there have been

nervous emotions throughout the Te Puke team ahead of the big day.

“It’s not scared of the unknown nervousness this time, its nervous excitement. It’s a second attempt for most of the guys. But we’ve got two guys who have never done it before.

“You’re quite excited to get back in there and see how well you’ve trained and basically muck in and do it.”

More than $319,000 was raised last year. This year, the Te Puke team has raised nearly $9000, but Mathew hopes to reach at least $10,000.

“All the guys have worked really hard training and fundraising.”

Rainbow smiles for safety A rainbow of multi-coloured smiles will splash across Tauranga hockey turfs this season after 1500 mouth guards were donated by a Tauranga orthodontist.

Hatching a dream The surprise arrival of a small fluffy bundle of feathers is being described as a turning point for the Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust.

The North Island brown kiwi chick, named Pistachio, is the first to be born from breeding pairs in the Oropi bush reserve since it was setup to establish a viable kiwi population 11 years ago – surprising everyone involved after a run of bad luck.

Trust chairman Phil Wells says the arrival is heartening for everyone involved who have poured countless voluntary hours into pest control and monitoring kiwi in the 1200 hectare virgin bush park.

“It’s been a long time coming. Conservation work has its ups and downs and we’ve had a fair share.”

With 34 unfertilised eggs being laid

by Otanewainuku’s only breeding pair Maui and Whetu, Phil says the discovery of the viable egg was a big surprise for everyone. The egg was taken to Kiwi Encounter at Rainbow

Springs in Rotorua, where it was incubated before hatching last week.

It will stay at Rainbow Springs before later returning to Otanewainuku.

Kiwi numbers in the area had dropped from about 50, recorded in the 1980s, to five in 2000. Problems of getting introduced juveniles to settle in the area and pair up has prompted a strategic review of the way trust operates, with plans to introduce kiwi at an older age when they are more likely to settle.

Phil believes the birth, together with the changed approach of releasing kiwi when 18 month adults, rather than as nine month juveniles, will mark a key change for the kiwi population. By introducing them into the park later they will be ready to settle down and more likely to form breeding pairs.

“One of the problems we have is the juveniles go wandering off – it’s very hard for the volunteers who are monitoring them and we can end up ‘losing them’. It’s very frustrating for the volunteers who have put in all the leg work.”

Sister city relationship

Bay of Plenty Girl Guides have been visiting Hitachi for more than 10 years as part of the sister city relationship between the two cities – and another group of girls just took the journey.

Danielle Pepperell of Tauranga District Girl Guides accompanied Mount Maunganui Coastal District Girl Guides Alana Jones, Nina Lopes, Kezia Tubbs, Brigette Horgan, Mikayla Lawrence, Megan Jenkins and leaders Joanna Burch, Katherine Jenkins and Janet Reekie to Japan for two weeks.

Janet says the Hitachi Girl Scouts Exchange Programme aims to create an opportunity for New Zealand Guides and Japanese Girl Scouts to learn about each other’s culture.

She says the girls can establish friendships by living with guiding families and by attending guiding, cultural and school activities together. “(It’s) understanding our differences and appreciating our similarities and to forge sister city links between Hitachi and Tauranga,” says Janet.

During the trip the girls stayed with Girl Scout host families in Japan, visited Hitachi Mayor Yoshinari, Kamin Zoo, Tokyo Disneyland, and learned traditional Japanese dance, karate and other traditions.

The girls also attended a tea ceremony and walked through the Garden of Kairakuen - one of Japan’s three most famous parks, says Janet.

“When leaving Hitachi we had our farewell at the train station and there where many tears as all the girls and leaders had made a special bond with their host families and group leaders who organised our stay in Hitachi.”

The girls are looking forward to when the Japanese Hitachi Girl Scouts and leaders visit in 2015.

The exchange takes place every two years.

Bay of Plenty Girl Guides have visited Hitachi three times during the last 10 years and last year Tauranga hosted the third contingent from Hitachi.

Tauranga City Council has had sister city relationships with Yantai, China for 25 years and Hitachi, Japan for 23 years.

Fowl mouth mishap It’s been a quiet week for this newshound, sidelined from opening weekend with injury.

There were a couple of frustrated hunters in the household, having to do their own swimming and wading through the mangroves – after their prodigy retriever was dramatically taken out by injury.

A mishap with my fowl mouth caused massive swelling under my tongue. Maybe it was a rogue stick that jabbed me during a chase. Perhaps it was a swipe from the filthy possums that we despatched last weekend.

Fortunately, the gallant Mobile Vet came to the rescue, with my saviour on many occasions, Joerg, performing a spot of surgery in the back of the mobile vet ambulance.

I was back in action after a few days, but not before missing out opening morning.

In the meantime, I had to stay

home and endure endless re-runs of Country Calendar and be fed mushy food that a fish would spit out.

Worse still, I imagined that Ady was getting the ride in the punt, in my camo bean bag, all to herself.

She’d be getting to hang out in the maimai with the lads and chase wild waterfowls through the mangroves and swamps.

Then, to add insult to injury, that pesky Chadwick from down the drive came a-snooping.

You’d think he’d have figured out there’s a manic mutt in the yard that, after being cooped up for a few days, will chase anything with fur.

I gave him the curry up all the way to the gate. I swear that cat was doing Mach 2 by the time he hurdled the pickets.

Hope he sucked up his under carriage on the way over, or we’ll be having more than just a stray grape vine adorning the fence top.

Anyway, I hear the clink of the boatshed door opening. This could be my long-awaited big outing.

The Tauranga City Council has designated a portion of Cambridge Park for the oak grove and Acorn Foundation Operations Manager Margot McCool says every year more trees will be planted in memory of those donors who have passed away over the preceding year. “It’s a wonderful legacy to those donors,” says Margot.

It’s annual plan submission time at Council This week elected members listened to submissions from submitters to Council’s proposed (draft) annual plan.

As noted previously numbers of submissions are down to 133 and 566 pages of which 51 were signatures to a petition. A long way from 2500 pages and more than 1000 submissions in the heady days of wants, needs and deserves not that long ago.

As was predicted by some of us (a minority unfortunately) the financial chickens have come home to roost but at least, and at last, the spending excess has now been reined in. There’s a very fine line between maintaining levels of services, controlling rates, keeping the city ticking over as the majority of you want and coping with unplanned events – like the recent round of flooding across the city. It’s not only flooding in Matua and the Mount industrial area that, in my view, just can’t be left anymore. A submitter told us of 23 out of 58 residences flooding in Commons Ave at Downtown Mount. Council has to move on this repeated flooding problem.

With caveats! It has to be well planned. It must be cost effective. I won’t second guess how the extra projects will be funded but re-prioritisation of existing Council capital and rate expenditure must rank up there.

And of course it isn’t possible to cope with all eventualities. If it rains hard enough no stormwater system will cope.

Ohauiti Reserve

Other submissions were about the Ohauiti Reserve and bringing it forward in the timetable. Wayne Moultrie told the submitter that numbers were what counted in his opinion. Filling the chamber with people in support doesn’t sway all elected members!

Police supported an application for $20,000 towards funding the Safe City Co-ordinator. If my memory serves me correctly this was originally a Central Government funded programme. Last year they cut back on funding, so, enter council/ ratepayers. A not too subtle ploy often used

by Government. Get the project going then abandon it to ratepayers. This is not to detract from the worth of any project but the question is – is it Council core business? The Government has the impertinence to tell Councils to better control their expenditure. This is one tiny example but it all adds up.

Another submission seeking $22,500 to fund the co-ordinator of a group organising housing on multiple owned Maori

land. They do actually build houses and are planning 252 houses over seven years. TCC declined the application last year due to budget restraint. Again we have to consider, per Government’s advice, as to whether this is core business for Council/ratepayers.

A breath of fresh air from Papamoa Tennis Club who want permission to plant some tall windbreak trees – and offered to help pay for them. We were off on a roll now and Sport BOP were very enthusiastic and grateful for the relationship and funding they have with Council. We heard from a number of sports lavish in their praise for Council rate-

payer facilities. In fact a number of elected members commented how rare it was to hear this good news at annual plan time.

The newly named ASB Arena at Baypark is a stunning success we were told. People come from near and far and it is attracting many visitors to our city. Which was part of the original plan to boost local business.

Hockey told us of the huge success of their new hockey turf – also bringing people to town, and cricket told us of their new amenity at Blake Park.

A new pavilion is being built and when finished this will be a leading attraction in the cricket world. They are funding a lot of this themselves but are seeking $35,000 from Council/ratepayers for a second wicket.

Four weeks in

New CEO Garry Poole has announced his new management team. He’s now into his fourth week! These appointments are solely Garry’s domain (and responsibility).

In fact at time of writing elected members had not met the new people. Jaine LovellGadd will head organisational services – this is finance, accounting and associated work. Jaine is ex various Auckland Councils and starts June 17. Ian Gooden, from Waikato, heads Infrastructure Services and has started already. This is engineering and associated services like water. Louise Miller will head Community and Environmental Services – planning and the like. She is coming from the UK and starts August 12.

Frank Begley has been confirmed as communications manager and Christine Jones as general manager of strategy.

It’s been a while coming but this reorganisation is in response to this Council’s stated determination at the beginning of its three

year term to ensure the organisation was fit for purpose in the prevailing economic climate.

It is imperative that the goals are achieved, quickly, so that ratepayers’ financial positions are consolidated to fall within, or to be less than future rating requirement predictions. Certainly that’s what this Council aims to set in stone – unexpected occurrences excepted of course.

Ex councillor Mary Dillon made a number of submissions. In one she said that the tree sub-committee was a disgrace and asked it “be urgently disbanded”. Murray Guy who is on the subcommittee made the point that this subcommittee purpose was to allow the democratic process to flow for people affected by Council’s tree policy.

Subcommittee members were advised by qualified staff on tree technical matters. Mary rejected his points and Mayor Stuart Crosby intervened with the score at one all. The third round would have been interesting.

Elected members were “buttered” up by Friends of the Library “for exceeding their expectations” by approving the Greerton Library.

They bought in muffins for morning tea. Yes, yes, I know it’s bribery and corruption at a high level but it was after the decision was taken. Elected members did enjoy them and no doubt will make the appropriate declarations of their individual statutory declaration forms.

Sniffing controversy

I’ll cover more submissions next week. The daily media only turned up for those submissions seemingly where they sniffed potential controversy and blood on the carpet. Largely they would have been disappointed. They missed many submissions from people supporting Council actions and initiatives. This round of consultation produced the most positive feedback to date – but there is firm direction needed in some Come and see us for great areas. Insulated from the cost Time is running out for households to take up subsidies on insulation costs which will expire in September.

Eligible homeowners can get up to $1300 (or 33 per cent) towards the cost of ceiling and under floor insulation and installation, while Community Service Card holders could get up to 60 per cent off the total cost.

This funding is limited, however, so be sure to check its availability with service providers.

If you are a homeowner (including landlords) and your house was built before year 2000, you can get up to $1300 (or 33 per cent) towards the cost of ceiling and under-floor insulation and its installation.

The remainder of the cost can be

added to homeowner mortgage (with participating banks) to be paid off at $7 per week (based on a 10 year payment term).

Warm Up New Zealand Heat Smart project manager Jenny Lackey says there is limited availability for the higher subsidy for Community Services Card holders, and encourages those wanting to take it up to check the support they could receive with Bay of Plenty service providers.

A total 7255 homes in the Western Bay of Plenty region have had insulation retrofitted since the subsidies were introduced in July 2009 (Tauranga 5680 and

Western Bay 1575 as at May 6). Heating subsidies, which have since stopped, have helped warm up 1290 Western Bay homes.

A correctly sized and installed Energy Star heat pump is proven to work efficiently at two degrees Celsius: the temperature at which some heat pumps struggle to perform.

After a very successful debut in February, Tauranga Entertainment Solutions is bringing back ‘The Orchid Lounge’ with a show set to hit the Otumoetai stage again on June 8.

The 2010 musical film ‘Burlesque’, starring Cher and Christina Aguilera, sparked director Sara Toomer’s idea for the show.

Sara describes the show as a “little bit of burlesque meets cabaret”.

It is musical theatre-influenced, with burlesque-style costumes, she says.

“My idea of burlesque is that it should be pretty, sexy and have an element of comedy in it, so I have taken those elements and mixed them with musical theatre to create the show.”

‘The Orchid Lounge’ is a fictitious

cabaret nightclub with a cast of five female performers who sing and dance, and a male master of ceremonies to keep the night flowing. Sara has already compiled,

directed and choreographed two hugely successful ‘Rock Revival’ shows for the Tauranga Musical Theatre, and more recently, she has directed and choreographed ‘RENT’.

She says the company prides itself in using only local talent.

“There is an unfortunate misconception in Tauranga that quality shows have to come out of Auckland or from overseas. People who came to see our February show couldn’t believe there was that sort of talent in Tauranga.”

The show is rated M as there are adult and sexual themes and is on June 8, at OTC Performing Arts Centre, 102 Windsor Rd, Otumoetai. Dessert is provided to patrons who purchase table seats. Tickets can be purchased from Baycourt Ticket Direct.

Super salad with eggplant The rain is here along with the cooler temperatures but I am not bringing out the soup recipes just yet.

There are many fruits and vegetables that haven’t had any coverage from me this season and then there are my favourites that get used a lot.

Eggplant, aubergine, melanzane call it what you like, it’s widely used for dishes like moussaka, ratatouille, dip or salsa.

This is one of my favourite vegetables

when thinly sliced and shallow-fried in avocado oil, drained on paper towels, sprinkled with sea salt and accompanied by aioli and smoked salmon.

At this stage you can roll and fill with a risotto or even shredded chicken, bound with mayonnaise, then leave to set and make part of mezz selection.

They’re still growing in my garden and are available in shops – and are often neglected. What I do with this vegetable is make a fabulous quick and easy dip that will go with that last summer barbecue you could still have.

SALAD Aubergine salsa Makes about 4 cups

Ingredients 4 large eggplants 3 cloves crushed garlic 3 large tomatoes, thinly sliced ½ red onion 1 green pepper, seeded and thinly sliced ½ tsp chilli powder 2 tsp cumin powder 1 tsp sea salt 5-8 Tbsp olive oil juice of two lemons Method Scape each aubergine with a fork or sharp knife to pierce the skin.

Bake aubergine in a hot oven 180 degree Celsius for 20 to 30minutes until they feel soft when poked with a finger.

Remove from oven and leave until cool enough to handle. Peel off the skin, scape

any remaining flesh and chop into a large bowl.

Add green pepper, onion and tomatoes.

In a smaller bowl mix the spices with olive oil and lemon juice.

Pour dressing over the vegetables and mix thoroughly.

Stir in parsley, taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

Serve with grilled salmon, fish or chicken.

Tasty orange beef with bok choy I just love walking into the local New World at the Mount and having a chat to the produce department.

They keep it so prestigious and fresh looking. We often have a chat about “what’s on special” and exchange recipes.

This week, I loved the look of the bok choy, which inspired me to cook Chinese.

As I walked around I noticed that the price of the rump steak was a good deal too, so I grabbed some to create this dish. I knew I had some oranges on the tree at home, so I was all ready to get creative in the kitchen.

The recipe

Serves 6-8 Rice and two bunches of broccoli, steamed and set aside Orange sauce 3 oranges, juiced 1 Tbsp of grated orange rind (reserved from juiced oranges) 3 Tbsp brown sugar 3 Tbsp sweet chilli sauce 3 Tbsp soy sauce 1/4 cup water 1 tsp grated ginger 1 tsp garlic, grated or finely chopped Cooking the beef Olive oil Self raising flour 700g rump steak, sliced into strips

Bok choy mix 2 bunches of fresh bok choy 1 garlic glove, chopped 1/2 tsp chili flakes 1/4 cup water Salt Method Preheat oven to 180degree Celsius. Keep an oven tray to the side for the beef. First, steam the rice and broccoli so it’s ready to add to the platter. Then, make the orange sauce.

It’s easy to mix all of the ingredients in a pot and reduce down. Dust the beef in self raising flour and cook in oil on a nonstick pan on high, so the meat becomes crispy. Place on oven tray in the oven so it becomes golden but not over-cooked. Put three tablespoons of oil, chilli flakes, garlic into a pan and stir fry for 30 seconds. Add washed and chopped bok choy, and stir fry until soft. Add little amounts of water, as needed, and a little salt. For a garnish, I like to toast raw nuts with a little salt and mash in a mortar and pestle. On a large platter, place rice in the middle with broccoli around the sides. Place the beef on top and drizzle sauce over it (keep a little for dipping), and top with crushed nuts before serving. Place bok choy on individual dishes for all to enjoy.

Celebrations combined Staff at ME/CFS Support (BOP) Inc are celebrating ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Awareness Day on Sunday, May 12: the birthday of Florence Nightingale.

Florence was the English army nurse who worked in the Crimean war.

She contracted an illness, thought to be CFS, and spent the last 50 years of her life confined to her home and virtually bedridden.

Spokesperson Tina Richards says although it is not terminal in nature, ME/CFS is a debilitating long-term illness which affects the immune system, as well the neurological and endocrine systems.

Symptoms include profound lasting fatigue, pain, memory and concentration problems, sleep disorders and headaches.

Tina says people suffering from the condition can look okay while feeling very unwell, and therefore often suffer from scepticism and disbelief from those around them.

Many also have difficulty in obtaining a diagnosis, she says.

The illness currently affects about 20,000 people in New Zealand.

Although there is no known cure at the moment, there is still helpful options available.

You’re never too old to learn first aid Mount Maunganui grandmother Karen Ofsoski has been thinking about doing a St John first aid course for a while.

“I just thought it would be quite good [to do] just in case,” says Karen.

Tania, who has two grandchildren around the same age, is learning for the first time how to do CPR. She places her hands, one on top of the other, and Her grandchildren, a five-year-old and a toddler of 16 months, are coming to stay with her for three and pushes with locked elbows into the chest of an adultsize manikin. She finds it hard, and she can’t seem to a half weeks soon. She is worried she is not prepared make the clicking sound signalling the correct depth of movement required to save a person’s life.

Deal with stress the healthy way We live in a world where stress is part of modern life.

Stress comes in many forms such as sitting in traffic, difficult working environments, relationships and family illness. Sometimes, it is a momentary thing but often it can be on-going for days or weeks. It is this type of stress that is killing us.

Fight or flight

Stress can trigger a response to a perceived danger, stimulating the release of hormones cortisol and adrenalin. It is called the fight or flight response, and for our ancestors it was vital for survival in situations when they were faced with wild animals or a warring tribe where they had to quite literally fight their way out or run for the hills. Once the danger has passed, our systems are designed to return to normal. Today, we are seldom faced with these scenarios but our bodies still respond in the same manner.

When the hormones are released, the body immediately increases blood sugars and breaks down fatty tissue to provide instant energy. At the same time, it speeds up the heart rate and shuts down the digestive system so the body is prepared to protect itself.

But when the body is exposed to the hormones for

extended lengths of time we get accelerated tissue breakdown, increased blood sugars, supressed immune systems and increased fat storage.

Conditions that can result from our systems remaining in a state of stress can include depression, heart disease, obesity, hair loss and anxiety disorders to name a few.

In some cases it is attributed to diabetes and cancer.

Find relief

Finding ways to reduce stress is important. Some find exercise or stretching a great way to relax and bring the body back into balance while others enjoy gardening or listening to music. Sometimes it is only a temporary solution, but giving your body and mind a break from what the stressor is, can be very important.

Alcohol and smoking are often, and mistakenly, used by people to relax. Research has shown that smokers have a higher base level of cortisol in their systems which results in a higher level of stress even when relaxed.

When under stress, good nutrition is a key to help reduce the devastating effects on the body. Avoiding fat, sugar and salt laden foods is important as is increasing foods high in antioxidants, fibre and nutrients.

Aiming for awards clean sweep Helping his parents run their motel during the Christmas holidays was the unexpected source of a business idea which Tauranga IT technician Quentin Pidduck hopes will take off.

Frustrated at not knowing when motel rooms had been cleaned and were ready for new guests, Quentin decided there needed to be a better way than rushing around the units to check.

“I’d have guests waiting for their room and I’d be running around, so I thought there needed to be a wireless system,” says Quentin.

IT developer Quentin Pidduck shows Bennetts Tauranga Motor Inn housekeeper Karen Boyd the app he has developed to update the motel reception when rooms are cleaned.

Inn, Quentin has gone onto develop a prototype which he is entering in the Young Innovator Awards new young professional’s category.

“I was already on track to do this but as soon I heard about the competition it really gave me a push.”

The Room Ready system operates on a smart phone or notepad. It includes an electronic checklist for cleaners to tick off, a record of who cleaned which room and it wirelessly notifies the motel reception as soon as a room is available.

Quentin, 21, is encouraging other young professionals (under 40) to enter the Young Innovator Award competition, “but not if they’ve got an even better idea than me”, he says halfjoking.

“If it helps you keep on track and gives you that extra motivation to follow your idea then it’s great,” says Quentin about the new category in the awards which were introduced

by Priority One four years ago to foster a culture of innovation in Western Bay secondary schools. Entries for the awards close on July 4.

Fund insurance Insurance companies are welcoming a private member’s bill that would give people aged over 65 a 25 per cent rebate on the cost of their health insurance and would axe the health insurance fringe benefit tax.

NZ First MP Andrew Williams says his bill is a response to the lack of health insurance among people aged over 65.

“Seniors over 65 years often stop their insurance when their income drops and their premiums escalate, so a 25 per cent rebate would encourage them to keep their health cover.”

HFANZ chief executive Roger Styles says they have advocated both the rebate and the scrapping of fringe benefit tax in the past as a way to boost private healthcare take-up.

Accuro Health chief executive Bruce Morrison of has spoken in the past about the problem of people cancelling their policies just as they were needed.

Bruce said the Government should look to Australia, where half the population has health insurance, compared to a third of Kiwis. The Australian Government provides incentives for those who take out private insurance.

“Figures show that between 2004 and 2010, the New Zealand Government’s health spend rose from $7.6 billion to $12.7 billion, an increase of 41 per cent.”

He warned that our Government would face an inability to fund a public health service, or at least not one on the same level, that it has now.

Having gone from small beginnings and different venues, Graeme says this year will be

one of the best – with a location made all the more perfect by 2000 free car parks, and 8000 square metre of indoor and outdoor space.

“The new ASB Arena at Baypark is superbly built for events of this nature. It’s a $40 million venue, this is as good as it’s going to get.”

Attracting more than 10,000 people last year, the event, put on by Bay Events, has become such a success that organisers have had to turn away companies.

This year, a number of new and exciting features are taking place, including large numbers of new home builders, a kitchen manufacturer extravaganza and the return of the much-loved Renovation Court.

Aside from the new features, returning to the show is a range of great prizes and exciting demonstrations – including live cooking shows.

Renovation Court back in town The Renovation Court, designed specifically with home renovators in mind, returns to Tauranga for the Home Show this weekend.

After successfully debuting at the Tauranga Home & Leisure Show last year, the Renovation Court offers a show within a show – featuring 10 of the region’s top renovation experts.

These include renovation specialists Smith & Sons, Mastercraft Kitchens, HomeTech, Solatube, Resene ColorShop, Creative Heating, Zip Plumbing Plus, Glass Art, NZ Revive, Home Plus, and Laser Plumbing.

The area is in 7th Avenue within the Home Show and will feature everything from design to delivery. Organiser Graeme Martin says it will be a must-see area.

“The Renovation Court is a Tauranga Home Show feature that brings all the experts into the one space at the one time, making the whole process a pleasure rather than a nightmare.

“Looking at the players involved, every key ingredient is involved and if there are any potential issues or problems unique to your home, you can sort them out on the spot, making what could be quite a stressful process a lot simpler.”

Renovation Court co-ordinator Conrad Kuriger from Smith & Sons says the concept behind the court is to create a one-stop renovation shop.

“The idea is to make the whole home renovating process from beginning to end, as easy and enjoyable as possible.

He says home renovating is becoming very popular, with home owners deterred by the thought of losing $20,000 to $30,000 in real estate fees when selling their home.

Playground surprise for school return Students at Mount Maunganui Primary School arrived back from the school holidays to a big surprise the historic senior playground is missing.

A modern version of the senior playground was erected during the two-week break.

It took principal Damien Harris and community volunteers, includ-ing some parents, three days to put together the new playground.

“It looks fantastic,” says Damien.

“It’s bright, new and shiny. It’s been developed for our senior kids so it’s got a few challenging activities on there and a range of different climbing nets and things which would be good for our younger kids as well.”

The old playground has stood on the primary school grounds, beside the swimming pool, for more than 30 years.

Despite the wooden adventure playground being replaced by a brand new version, it continues to live on. The old playground was taken away by a private bidder for his children’s use at home, says Damien.

“That was nice that it kind of could continue to live on. It was a bit sad to see it go but it was good

for our kids to get a new one as well.”

Damien wants to thank those who helped erect the new playground.

“The crew that helped put it up was an expert crew who have created a fantastic playground that our school is very proud of.”

Aiden is proving his doctors wrong After being paralysed from the knees down in an accident 14 months ago, Te Puke threeyear-old Aiden Lints is beating the odds.

Doctors were certain Aiden may never walk again after being in a serious crash near Te Puke last year.

But the three-year-old is proving them wrong, enjoying one of his first public outings since the accident last week when mum Monique took him to the Bay of Plenty Parafed Have a go Day. The day is designed for people with disabilities to take part in a variety of sports including wheelchair rugby and boccia.

On March 9 last year, Aiden, Monique, dad Grenville and baby brother Danyon were in a head-on car accident.

The Lints’ 4WD vehicle and a van crashed at the intersection of State Highway 2 and the Whakatane turn-off.

“He has had a lower spinal cord injury. We have had a chance to settle back in at home and get everything sorted,” says Monique.

She says their new baby has arrived and they are just getting life back on track.

“Aiden has been a trooper. He has been amazing.

They took him away from me after the accident and said he would never walk again.”

Monique says the whole event has been life changing.

Support wanted for botanic group The Sydenham Botanic Advisory Group is calling on the public to help show Tauranga City Council why the park is an asset to the city.

Advisory group committee member Lisa Adams and her husband started a petition in 2011 in support of the park after council dropped the $30,000

budget for park maintenance.

The group is looking to fund future plans including public toilets, rubbish bins and seating to maintain the park to council standard.

“It’s all about making people aware of the park and where we want to head with it,” says Lisa.

Project co-organiser Jim Peterson says the event, which was organised by all 12 Lions clubs from Te Puke to Bethlehem, offers a chance for everyone to get out and get active – with options starting from the easier 5km walk along the harbours’ edge from Fergusson Park to Harbour Drive.

“We want to see thousands of people out enjoying those wonderful tracks we’ve got around here –not only is it good for your health it will help the many local people who rely on the Cancer Society’s Lion’s Lodge in Hamilton.

“It’s an exciting project that is aiming to get people out discovering the great walkways on their doorstep and encourage them to get active.”

A competitive 65km run around city perimeter is another option, which hopes to attract up to 100 teams to take part in the nine-stage circuit. Seasoned runner Ross Steele, who has run 54 marathons, says the short walks should encourage more people to get involved.

This was somewhat unique to New Zealand and is now changing to the international standard of specified maximum amount payable.

This now allows insurers and underwriters to establish what their potential risk is in an event.

Two houses next to each other may have similar square metre rates, however, due to construction methods and “spec” they may have quite different replacement costs.

T-shirt comp promotes mural festival Katikati is making the first big push for the upcoming NZ Mural Contest and Arts Festival from October 1-6 – with a t-shirt design competition.

Katch Katikati is hosting the ‘U-design Festival T-shirt competition’ from May 1-31 offering everyone a chance to make a statement and get involved in the festival and its promotion.

“It’s something a bit different,” says Katch Katikati promotions manager Jacqui Knight. “At our Christmas shop-to-win we used t-shirts as a promotion tool and it highlighted how much of a difference it makes to have a visual aid in people’s faces.”

Designers young or old can get creative in their work – the only rule is the shirt must include the words ‘NZ Mural Contest and Arts Festival – 30 Sept-Oct 6, 2013’.

“We thought if we can get a cool t-shirt designed and get it to retailers, their staff can wear the shirts to promote the festival and it will tie the whole town together.”

Jacqui is approaching Katikati Community Board to ask for funding to purchase flags to hang in the main street for the festival.

“The t-shirt design winner, who will be announced in mid-June, may also have their design printed on the flags.”

Pet of the Week This gorgeous red-head named Gingernut appeared one day at a kind residents’ home as a stray. She strolled in and made herself at home – proceeding to make a nest and deliver a litter of six kittens. They were all brought into ARRC for care.

Gingernut is a wonderful mum, raising her gorgeous kittens.

named by our fosterer “three shades of ginger” and have all been re-homed as loving pets.

Beware the Bolivian’s reversion to tribal law Maori hierarchy are hoping to scrap our present constitution, written in 1852, in favour of the Bolivian constitution.

Three speakers at a Wellington Constitution meeting Co Chairman Dr. Burrows; constitution lawyer, Claudia Geiringer and Associate Professor, Nin Thomas, all stated we do not have a written constitution and this fact caused lots of problems.

Nin Thomas promoted the Bolivian Constitution as a means of solving the above problem.

New Zealand being in turmoil due to racial Governance, it might be said that now would be the worst time to interfere with our Constitution.

What wasn’t said of this Bolivian Constitution was that private property became the property of the community, past owners having to rent back their homes and cars.

Rental from the above was divided 50/50 between Government and the indigenous tribes in Bolivia.

Law and order reverted to tribal law, each tribe in control of what that might, or might not be within their respective areas.

It has been proven we have only one treaty and it contains no exclusive Maori rights.

Never has hard evidence been produced Maori came here first, it has been produced they weren’t.

Treaty book ‘inaccurate’ The book Twisting the Treaty (a tribal grab for wealth and power) is sowing racial disharmony and hatred throughout New Zealand. It is full of twisted facts and historical inaccuracies aimed at dividing New Zealand along racial lines.

Yes by signing the treaty they ceded full sovereignty to Queen Victoria but in return they would have free and full land rights and the same rights as British subjects.

The treaty is a partnership between the Crown and Maori as when Hone Heke signed the treaty he said “we are one people now”. Tuhoe are not signatories of the treaty and are not bound by the treaty. There are principles to the treaty that is 1 full land rights, 2 equal rights with Pakeha 3 the right for Maori to preserve their language and culture. These were not dreamt up pakeha have these rights too.

The Maoris are indigneous people as they settled in New Zealand before Pakeha. Yes New Zealand belongs to all New Zealanders but the rights of Maori must be protected. Any denial of rights is a precursor to violence and genocide. Maybe the authors of Twisting the treaty should read Adolf Hitler’s “Mien Kampf ” and see how their book is similar! I suggest a Boycott of the book “Twisting the Treaty”. Lets stop racial intolerance.

No more rights than other NZers Mr Mayor, be very, very careful about committing the people of Tauranga to an agreement that will be shown to have no legality unless you want your tenure to be remembered as ‘The time when we gave our children’s inheritance away.”

Under the terms of the Treaty the Ngai Tuhoe have no more rights than any other New Zealanders. They may not have signed the Treaty but they have certainly profited greatly from its benefits since.

Don’t be deceived by the corrupted translation of the word ‘Taonga.” In 1820 it meant according to chiefs Hongi Hika and Waikato ‘property taken by the spear.’

It means the same today, something tangible, real, solid, like tools,weapons, food, clothing and not something esoteric, abstract and in the realms of conjecture.

The Ngai Tuhoe have no more rights to guardianship or authority over affairs than any other citizen. To have this authority under the terms of our society they must be democratically elected to office and not just granted it as of right, as misguided compensation for some unproven historic injustice. There must be no co-governance. There is no historic justification for it.

Distorting history Robin Bell in a letter of 26 April, accuses someone of “distorting history simply to gain brownie points”. Yet the same writer earlier claimed that Maori sailed the oceans at a time when Europeans navigated in oracles [sic] and believed the world was flat.

Sounds like distorting history to gain brownie points to me. Google “the myth of the flat earth” and learn some history.

Council direction change required Why is it that Tauranga seems to buck the current NZ trends when it comes to economic directions and issues?

Whilst throughout NZ there are increasing numbers in employment, house prices are increasing, mortgagee sales are reducing here in Tauranga our signals are all going in the opposite direction and seemingly they are not going to improve, at least in the short-term.

Have you noticed Downtown Tauranga recently as I am feeling very concerned for the retailers that are there.

There would be at least 20 empty retail tenancies and I understand that more will appear, over the winter months, as conditions become even harder. And then there are the empty high rise build-

ings, in the middle of the city that all leads to a further feeling that the CBD is in decline and needs urgent help.

Is the perception that we do not have a business friendly Council part of the overall problem because this seems to be the only common factor and is certainly one that I

have been made aware of?

Few, if any, of our currently elected representatives have any apparent business background whatsoever but with the election, later this year we have the opportunity to change this.

I am certainly not proposing wholesale changes but when you have councillors stating that the role is a lifestyle and not a job (even whilst drawing a salary of $80,000 plus) this is just not acceptable and people such as this deserve to be dethroned.

Surely there are people with a common view, but also independent thinkers, that believe that they can and will do better so now is the time to think about standing for the 2013 local body elections.

Councillor stands by meeting comments Dear Sir, I wish to comment on the article by Mr Anderson where he was referring to a Western Bay Council evening to inform the community on the annual plan and encouraging ratepayers to make submissions.

After a thorough outline of the issues and financial controls planned for Western Bay by my colleagues, he then referred that the only thing one councillor said it that was a govt problem. However I stand by what I said towards the end of the meeting.

Co-governance and co-management in relation to iwi, a good question and I reply as follows.

The Crown not Council is in the process of settling a number of Treaty Claims. It has been stated that within those settlements that there will be land that will change from Crown ownership to iwi.

I also understand that the Crown (not Council) is preparing as part of those settlements to create Cogovernance and potentially Co-management structures particularly around the management of waterways.

Please note that neither I or other TCC elected representatives were involved in any negotiations. We did have meetings with the Treaty negotiators who informed us of the process but made it clear to us that that the settlements are between the Crown and iwi and that they were informing us not consulting us of some elements of proposed settlements.

We encouraged the Crown and iwi negotiators to be more engaging with us and the wider community on the settlements.

One of the first of these arrangements put in place as a result of settlements is to do with the Kaituna river.

In summary neither I or my TCC Councillors were a party to Treaty negotiations but are now aware we will be involved in some of the outcomes as they effect Tauranga. If R.Bishop and others have issues with those outcomes they need to take them to the the Treaty of Waitangi Settlement Minister Mr. Chris Finlayson for an explanation.

I hope this clarifies my comments and would be happy to meet R.Bishop and others to discuss this matter further.

So they are paying their GST with after taxed income, and at 15% this is a sizable amount on people’s rates in the urban area particularly. Successive govts have not made it easier, and I think someone could talk to an MP about it. That was my point. I accept there may be no easy solution but someone in govt could do some work on the subject, and I just suggested he contact his MP but he said he was too old to bother. We will continue to keep rates as low as we can knowing it is not easy for people. We are ever mindful of this.

Cart before the horse scenario Sunlive have presented a good report and summary on the Sunlive website under “Council” about my submissions on the TCC annual plan to Councillors including a review of the desperately bad finances of TCC. Government Treasury requires that Council debt not exceed 250% of annual income, for the 30/6/2012 year TCC’s income was $168m, debt $460m(274%) these amounts are from audited annual accounts as approved by TCC). Despite this some elected members still think it is around $391-400m, why?.

After the submission and during the Q&A session it became apparent that some members seemed preferred the bliss and slumber of a “nice” submission asking for money and rather not have to hear anything else. Where does democracy fit into all of that? I guess a warm and cozy seat is better that listening to a “disturbance of the peace”.

There’s more mockery for ratepay-

ers… Councillors recently approved the Greerton Library demolition/complete rebuild before the annual submission process started, that means all ratepayers are denied the opportunity to provide their opinion “before the decision’s made”, not unlike the fiasco over the Pilot Bay Boardwalk decision followed by belated subsequent consultation, the cart before the horse scenario.

I had occasion to read both free local newspapers at the same time last weekend.

One was 56 pages long, the other 28. One took over 30 minutes to read/peruse, the other less than 3.

Not only was one twice as big as the other, but it had three times the amount of stories and four times the amount of information.

I understand that one has over 60,000 copies printed and distributed, the other less than 50,000.

There’s only one paper worth reading in the Bay. Guess who that is?

Parliament has better things to do In response to Joel van Ameringen, 5 April, who sounds like an intelligent man. When a person becomes an MP, commonsense flies out the window, and political correctness storms through the door, with self interest raining through the leaky roof, and self aggrandisement seeping though the walls.

Giving one’s personal opinion would make one a phobic of one thing or another, and I think it is just too hard for a politician to stand up and go against the flow, even though most probably 80% of them want to.

Statesmen used to but these days we only have politicians. They don’t care, because they turn round and say ‘if you are unhappy about the state of the nation, have your say at the next elections’. But that doesn’t really change anything, does it? We still get one or two one-eyed sheep, from the party list. with the rest of the mob blindly following them.

I’m not phobic about anything, except vermin, and I don’t care what two consenting adults do, as long it does

not impinge on anyone. But while on this particular subject, I do know what Mother Nature intended: that sex is for the propagation of the species, and for at least 99.9% of all living things, it takes a male and a female for this to happen and then to raise the young to healthy and happy adulthood.

Marriage is a man-made institution, based on this. Where Mother Nature made a booboo, was making sex enjoyable.

Modern people also came up with Civil Union, which affords the same rights and privileges as marriage. So why all this hoohaa? Just everyone, get on with your lives, the same as 99% of us do, and live according to our beliefs and persuasions, without having to shout it to the world, and waste precious Parliament time. They have better things to do. eg productivity, full employment, health, education, and all these other things that are promised to the minions every three years.

Just live and let live, and the world would be a better place.

(Friday 3 May) the following extracts are from the archives of ‘The Campaign For Truth In Medicine’ (Philip Day) “Fluoride is often used to describe fluorine-based chemical additives that have been put into the public water supply or toothpastes and foods.

The term ‘fluoride’ has been found to encompass everything from sodium, calcium and potassium fluorides through to the highly dangerous liquid toxic waste product hexa- (or- hydro) fluorisilicic acid and the toxic powder sodium silicofluoride, both of which are dumped into the public water supply by

industry with no detoxification procedures carried out beforehand.

Sodium fluoride, the same compound that is added to toothpastes is a chief component of Sarin nerve gas. It’s also the main ingredient in rat poison, as any pest control expert will tell you.

Research highlighting the adverse effects of fluoride compounds on human beings is abundant.

As far back as October of 1944, the Journal of the American Medical Association published an editorial stating: ‘… that the use of drinking water containing as little as 1.2 to 3 parts per million of fluoride will cause such developmental disturbances in bones as osteosclerosis, spondylosis, and osteoporosis, as well as goitre.’

Custody remand for drug accused

A Welcome Bay man facing numerous drug charges will remain behind bars until his next court appearance on June 10.

Derek Vince Gibson, 30, is charged with offering to supply the Class A drug methamphetamine and seven counts of the Class C drug cannabis.

He appeared in Tauranga District Court on Monday where he was remanded in custody for a post committal conference next month.

Confessed drunk sentenced

A Tauranga man who admitted to burgling two businesses in Tauranga while drunk has been sentenced to 12 months and 14 days in prison.

Andre Chopper Taki, 31, was sentenced on two counts of burglary and a one charge of possessing cannabis.

Taki was convicted and discharged of wilful damage. Judge Christopher Harding sentenced Taki to six months’ jail time for each of the burglary charges and 14 days on the cannabis charge.

Reversing car death: guilty plea

A Bellevue woman charged with careless driving causing the death of 84-year-old Velma Rereao Zandstra pleaded guilty when she appeared in Tauranga District Court on Friday.

Renee Marie Jones, 34, admitted to carelessly driving the car that hit and killed the elderly widow as she walked along the footpath of Windsor Rd in October last year.

Jones was remanded at large until June 6 to allow her to attend a restorative justice meeting with Velma’s family.

Lost youths winched from bush

A group of youth tramping in the bush near Lake Waikaremoana had to be winched from the bush after losing their way while on a multiple day hike.

The group of four youths and a man were originally due out of the bush on Sunday when they became lost and activated an emergency beacon.

On Monday afternoon a man and four youths in the party were all hoisted into the helicopter and dropped at the Marauiti hut.

Drink drive accused suppression

Two Bay of Plenty girls, aged four and seven, were injured when a suspected drunk driver ran over them while reversing from a driveway last weekend.

Both girls were taken to Whakatane Hospital, the four-year-old in a serious condition while her seven-year-old friend from Rotorua was treated and discharged.

The alleged drunk driver was charged with two counts of drink-driving causing injury when he appeared in Whakatane District Court on Tuesday this week.

He was remanded without plea to reappear on May 15.

What we have to keep reminding ourselves about these televisual talent quests is that they’re not about music – they’re about television. But who am I to complain? It just means joining an increasingly long line of moaners. If you doubt my words just throw “slams TV talent shows” into Google and see what comes up.

Sadly Mount Maunganui’s own Stan Walker, who himself sprang to fame on a talent show, told them to “walk off now” and labelled their indifferent attitude as “shocking”. But fair enough. After all, the programme makers and producers and creators plan to make serious money from the contestants. Taking the mickey disrupts the cash flow.

Back in the real world I was chatting with the good folk of Bonjour Swing, who seem to be keeping busy with their usual wide range of projects.

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Marion Arts is over at the Mount this Sunday afternoon playing at Brazilian restaurant/bar Armazem with Brazilian percussionist Carlos Souza. They play from 4.00 till 7.00pm, a mixture of original songs and instrumentals, including lots of groove-based stuff, and Brazilian and French songs.

Although this is the second Sunday of the month you can more regularly catch them there every first Sunday.

And, talking of Marion, her guitar and ukulele teaching season is entering full swing. Her Monday morning group for slightly-beyond-beginners is starting again on Monday (13 May) and currently has vacancies - see her website www.marionarts.co.nz.

Meanwhile, Marion’s multi-instrumentalist Bonjour Swing partner Robbie Laven has also been hanging at Armazem. He plays most Thursday nights there from 10.00 to 1.00am with Brazilian guitarist/singer/ songwriter Atilla Cardoso though, in typically fluid Brazilian style, it’s not necessarily every Thursday.

Their repertoire includes Samba rock and Forro, R ‘n’ B à la John Mayer, Samba reggae and original funky material. Robbie can play most instruments known to humans but for this gig he sticks to lap-steel guitar, percussion, flute, tenor sax and fiddle. He’s obviously taking it easy.

And finally, in breaking news of the celebrity variety, newly married and absolutely bona fide New Zealand citizen Richard O’Brien is to be honoured by Waikato University next week when he will be awarded a Master of Arts for his contribution to the arts and commitment to the Waikato arts community.

When asked for reaction on his upcoming elevation to the hallowed title of Richard O’Brien MA, the Rocky One mused: “With my school record, becoming an honorary academic makes me aware of how standards have fallen.”

Constitution conversation A constitution establishes the basic principles on which a Government is based. It covers the functions, powers and limits of the different parts of Government, and the rights of citizens. Many nations have a written constitution. But in New Zealand, the constitution is not written in a single formalised document. This means that our constitution is drawn from a variety of sources, which have developed in different ways and at different times in New Zealand’s history.

The New Zealand system of Government is based on the English Westminster system. This model provides for a separation of powers between the parliament, the executive and the courts. This separation ensures there are checks and balances within the system and that accountability is maintained. Because our constitution determines our rights and how we live together, we all have a role to play. We vote, we follow the law, we lobby for change and we can stand for local and national government.

This year the Constitutional Advisory Panel will be listening to your views and reporting to Government on what New Zealanders think about our constitution. Starring: Quvenhane Wallis, Dwight Henry, Levy Easterly - Dir: Benh Zeitlin Beasts of the Southern Wild was very much the little engine that could at this year’s Oscars. It was far and away the smallestbudgeted film nominated but, despite coming away empty handed there (it has won many other awards), the magical tale held its own proudly amongst esteemed competition.

Simply – and it is a simple film – the story takes place in a fictitious location, hinted at as being similar in ways to the Louisiana gulf coast. It is called The Bathtub and living in this community are Hushpuppy, an indomitable six-year-old girl and her father, Wink.

He practices what seems to be very tough Many people are going to enjoy the marvellous documentary The Queen . It is a fasciof Versailles nating glimpse into the 2008 financial crisis, but from a fresh and unusual perspective. It follows the Siegel family, top of the heap with the wealthy and politically influential, David Siegel runs the successful Westgate Resorts time-share business and his beauty queen wife, Jackie. They are building the largest private home in America (“inspired” by its namesake).

Then comes the crash. It’s hard not to feel a certain amount of schadenfreude as these ghastly gauche people are forced to curtail their grotesquely ostentatious lifestyle and the film’s accumulation of small telling detail (and hints at the underlying immorality of the initial business) is engrossing.

love, trying to prepare her for the upcoming storm and for life without him. We see the film from her perspective so strange magical things are happening all around.

And if the story is, in retrospect, less than the sum of its parts, then the way it is told amply makes up for that. The imagery is strong and memorable, the performances are lovely – the young girl, Oscar-nominated, really is extraordinary - and the whole film feels like a glimpse of another world, transporting you into a place where life is simpler and more elemental. It’s an invigorating experience.

The Sessions is a film based on the true story of Mark O’Brien, nearly completely paralysed and confined to an iron lung since childhood, university graduate, poet, and journalist. And, when we meet him in 1988, a man wanting to have sex.

Thanks to a witty humane script and a cast working at the top of their game, it is a delightful and inspiring movie. Australian John Hawkes is brilliant as O’Brien, flat on his back but instantly a person we know and like; Helen Hunt is fearless as the sex surrogate he employs and William H Macy is fresh and sympathetic as his common sense priest. Touchy stuff, beautifully handled.

While she is happy to sing her heart out with the unconventional local choir, Arthur would prefer to hide himself away and complain about how embarrassing it is. But when heartbreak strikes, Arthur is forced to re-think his outlook on life.

Health issues in senior years Osteoporosis is one of the most common conditions affecting our health as we get older.

Yet, it receives relatively little attention. As we age the natural constant renewal of our bone structure alters so that the structure and strength of our bones is less able to resist even minor impacts.

As a consequence, after the age of 60, half of all women and a third of all men will experience a fracture (broken bone) due to bones weakened by osteoporosis.

These fractures rob older people of their mobility, their general health and their confidence or ability to participate in living active lives. The biggest myths

are that it only affects frail older women and that you cannot do anything about it.

Osteoporosis is usually silent until bones start breaking. Many fractures are precipitated by a fall, so reducing falls goes ‘hand in hand’ with osteoporosis prevention.

Learn about the pillars of prevention: keeping active, a calcium and protein rich diet, the role of vitamin D, preventing falls, and whether you are at risk due to other health problems.

“Don’t leave it too late.”

Dr Spellacy has a special interest in osteoporosis and will explain how the impact of osteoporosis can be reduced and managed both by individuals and by health services.

The seminars start on May 14, 10am in the Tauranga Senior Citizens Club.

Choirs to perform with first class soloists A chance for two choirs to work together with first class soloists inspired ‘The Best of British’, a concert planned for May 18 and 19 at Wesley Church in Tauranga.

The concert, features soloists including world renowned organist Dr John Wells, soprano Jayne Tankersley, alto Elizabeth Gawler, tenor Nigel Drake and baritone Chalium Poppy.

They will celebrate the centennial anniversary of English composer Benjamin Britten’s birth in 1913, with his 1943 composition ‘Rejoice in the Lamb’.

Ralph Vaughan-Williams’ work for baritone and choir composition ‘Five Mystical Songs’ will be presented; and English composer John Rutter will have his ‘Mass of the Children’ performed. Otumoetai College’s girls’ choir Belle Voix will take a leading role.

Conductor on this occasion is Tauranga Civic’s musical director Jeremy Whimster, who is happy the popular and talented John Wells can accompany them.

Tickets to the shows, at 7.30pm on Saturday, May 18 and 3pm on Sunday, May 19 cost $25 are available through Baycourt or at the door.

Friends together again for evangelist crusade Pastor Tom Frew and one of New Zealand’s best known organists, Len Hockly, first worked together 28 years ago when they combined their talents to host a major evangelist crusade at Tauranga’s Baycourt Theatre.

When Tom became pastor at Central Baptist Church, he combined his efforts with Len to host Central Baptist’s extremely popular ‘Sunday Night @ Central’, which ran monthly for 15 years and was credited with the enhancement of many local and overseas artists.

When Tom retired from full-time ministry at Central Baptist at the end of 2012, the pair thought that their long-time partnership was over. But “God had other plans”, says Tom. So, the two octogenarians are together again for a reunion on

Sunday, May 12 at Omokoroa Baptist Church, which meets at the Settler’s Hall 10am each Sunday. The Omokoroa church is a growing family church where all people receive a warm welcome, especially at this unique reunion.

But what about the Central Baptist Church’s ‘Sunday Night @ Central’? Because of popular demand, Tom tells us that plans are already underway to resume the Sunday night programme in July this year. The city will, once again, enjoy a line-up of popular artists and discoveries, as well as messages of encouragement and motivation. Tom’s slogan for the Central Baptist, and indeed all churches, looks as if it is still applies. “Age is an asset, not a hindrance”.

This Sunday at Omokoroa is a very special occasion for Tom, Len and the church – and they look forward to the company of many of their old friends, and the pleasure of making new ones.

Students learning for life Slapstick comedy Bay of Plenty Polytechnic’s distribution programme is not only a training facility – it also operates as a commercial warehouse.

Distribution students from the Maleme St campus in Tauranga have been busy learning the ins and outs of the warehousing process, putting their skills to the test through the polytechnic’s commercial warehouse.

Partnered with the Road Transport students, programme tutor Jon Stewart says students are getting real life experiences.

“It’s not just a training facility. We have a commercial side to our warehousing as well so the students are able to get real hands on experience of dealing with a customer’s product.

“The logistics industry is huge with the Port [of Tauranga] right here. There are ample opportunities there.”

At the course’s completion, students receive a National Certificate in Distribution Level 2, a first aid certificate, an ‘F’ licence endorsement and an OSH forklift certificate.

During the 12 week programme, Jon says students will learn about the inwards and outwards goods process, including picking, packing and dispatching of orders.

“It gives them the skills to be able to secure a job in warehousing or somewhere within that logistics industry.”

Side-splitting slapstick comedy will soon be on show at 16th Avenue Theatre as the Tauranga Repertory Society presents its latest production ‘Bullshot Crummond’.

Director Liam Hagan describes the show as a parody of the 1930s B-grade movie detective stories, and he promises the talented cast will have the audience in fits of laughter.

“A lot of the laughs come from our attempts to stage big budget action scenes like car chases, sword fights and plane crashes using cheap scenery and props like stuffed pigeons falling from the ceiling. It’s slapstick comedy at its best,” says Liam.

The show revolves around character Bullshot Crummond – played by 16th Ave newcomer Gavin Kerr – a hapless detective hired to track down and rescue a kidnapped professor.

New and cherished art prepped for auction Works of both new and cherished art are on show at this year’s Treasured Art exhibition.

Following a three-year success, the Rotary Club of Tauranga Sunrise is commencing their charity fundraiser again this month with proceeds going towards youth charity Kiwi Can. The project consists of a gala evening for invited guests where treasured art is sold by auction. This is followed by a two-day exhibition and sale at the Ingham Sears Showroom in Mount Maunganui.

Anthony Warnes, a well-known Tauranga artist, is the feature artist for the charity exhibition.

The exhibition offers selected works kindly donated by art lovers and some works are sold for 50 per cent commission on behalf of artists and collectors.

“It’s all treasured art because it’s high quality art,” says organiser Kathy Webb.

Others are brand new pieces painted by artists including some of Anthony’s famed seascapes.

“Many Tauranga people know Anthony Warnes.

He’s been an identity for quite some time,” says Kathy.

Other artists include award winning Tauranga artist Nick Eggleston, who is well known for his dogs series, and Michael Sass for his realistic landscape paintings.

Last year, $40,000 worth of art was sold with more than 220 people bidding on featured artworks. A little more than $20,000 went to Kiwi Can. From May 17, more than 80 pieces will be on display between 10am and 3pm on Friday and Saturday.

Getting up close with alpacas

Residents are encouraged to visit alpacas at the region’s eight alpaca farms.

The New Zealand Alpaca Association is encouraging more people to get up close and personal with alpacas, and to further educate themselves about the animal.

EXCELLENCE IN DERMATOLOGY

Eight farms between Te Puke and Katikati opened their gates to the public on Sunday, May 5, in a bid to introduce people to the animals on National Alpaca Day. Contrary to what many believe, alpaca don’t usually spit at people, says Tauranga alpaca advocate Rosemary Newson of Sonric Suri Alpacas.

“Generally, alpaca have respect for humans because we are around the same size as them – and we teach our alpaca that if they spit, they don’t get any treats.”

Rosemary says alpaca are still relatively new to

New Zealand farming but are becoming increasingly popular because of their quiet nature and ease of handling.

Alpaca farmers in New Zealand have as few as three animals on lifestyle blocks and herds of up to 200, often being managed in a mixed farming situation alongside sheep and beef.

Stocking rates for alpaca can be quite high, with as many as 100 grazed on a 4 ha block.

Helping those keen to enter the industry is one of the association’s aims.

The gates to eight alpaca farms between Katikati and Te Puke remain open to those who wish to learn more. Appointments are necessary.

Lifezone Church is starting a new chapter in their history with the first service in their new facility at 7 Oak Lane, Judea. How God is like a mother too “We often talk about God being like a father to us,” a teacher said to her class one Mothers’ Day. “But have you ever thought of God being like a mother?”

Some children looked at her, and then shook their heads in disbelief.

“Nah,” they giggled, not quite able to imagine such a thing.

While we may acknowledge that God-beyond-knowing is beyond gender, sometimes we find it hard to think of God like a mother. Yet the scriptures contain many wonderful feminine images for God – like a mother hen gathering her chicks under her wings, like a woman celebrating when she finds a lost coin, like a

woman giving birth and nursing her child.

In Hebrew, the words “compassion” and “mercy” are related to the word for “womb”, giving us a clue to the type of love that God has for us and all creation.

How different a place could the world be, if we shared more of the motherly love of God? For one Puerto Rican woman, it was her grandmother who she felt could best be compared with God. “If they asked me to draw God”, she said, “I would draw my grandmother smiling. Because she is the only person that I believe has filled me … so much that I can compare her with God. I would draw a picture of my grandmother with her hands open, smiling, as if to say, ‘Come with me because I am waiting for you’.”

On this Mothers’ Day, imagine a God who cares for each one of us with the deep love of a caring mother!
