Twin task for world’s best Sweat, sand and surf – the Lion Foundation New Zealand Surf League is taking to Mount Maunganui Main Beach this weekend. For the first time, the under-14 and under-16 divisions have been added to the mix, kicking off the competition on Thursday and Friday, February 9-10. The big guns from the under-19 and open divisions join in on the action on Saturday and Sunday.

Amongst the athletes, under-19 reigning champs, twins Kirby and Chad Wheeler (pictured), are gearing up to compete in the open division for the first time. The 19 year olds are going up against men much older than them, including world champions. It is a big step, but both are looking forward to the challenge.

Breast is best There’s been a fair bit of teeth gnashing over breastfeeding lately. A quick survey of my mates reveal they’re all for it, although some noted it’s hard to find a willing woman these days. Especially one prepared to spice it up with a tot of rum.

You’ve got to feel for Piri Weepu. He’s gone from having the country telling him how he should feed his backline; to the country telling him how to feed his kid.

You just can’t win being a celebrity. Suddenly even the smallest of personal matters becomes a news item of national interest. When a guy can’t lovingly feed his child without it becoming a national crisis, you have to wonder if we are a bit short of things to worry about.

Same goes for Jon Gadsby this week, splashed all over the news, not because of what he did; but who he is. Thousands of New Zealanders are busted drink driving every month, but they don’t make the six o’clock news. Even ones that have been nailed four times don’t make those headlines. It doesn’t make it right; but the punishment is way out of kilter with that handed down to ordinary drunk New Zealand drivers.

Gadsby’s story was big news because he’s famous.

Just as a certain local rock star, enjoying the odd doobie, found out recently – the average person is obsessed with seeing justice handed out evenly, no matter your station in life or fame or fortune.

Yet for these people, the punishment and level of public humiliation is so much greater than for the Average Joe. Is that reasonable? I don’t believe so.

They should not suffer a greater punishment than the average person, simply because they are not perceived in the public mind to be ‘average’.

If you think they should fall harder because they’re a celebrity, that surely is Tall Poppy nonsense at its worst.

The irony is, they are just average people. Granted, very good at what they do, but they put their underwear on one foot at a time, just like the rest of us. (Although, if you are ever short of amusement, it’s worth trying to put both feet in together. Just don’t tell ACC I suggested it.)

And don’t you go pointing the finger at “the media”.

This obsession with celebrity trivia is driven by the public.

It’s the readership in general that drives popularity of stories.

You want it, the media delivers.

Supply and demand. So next time you hear someone generally slagging “the media”, it translates: You lot.

And speaking of free milk: If you can’t get it from a nearby breast or don’t have a cow in the back yard, then like the rest of us, you’re buying it from a supermarket, dairy or gas station.

Now a price war has broken out with some outlets offering cheap milk.

Federated Farmers are pretty excited about this, saying that it’s about time the supermarket margin was the focus. If you take off GST, the latest price squeeze puts the cost of a litre at the same as Australia.

the first step in a wider retail milk price war between Foodstuffs and Progressive. It’s happened in the UK and Australia so why not here?

The focus really needs to be on the supermarkets, because if dairies can sell milk cheaper and a small supermarket like Nosh can sell it as a loss leader, surely Foodstuffs and Progressive can do the same?

And if the government was serious about encouraging New Zealanders to live healthier, it would be not only dropping the tax on homegrown health foods such as milk, but tripling the tax on the imported rubbish, soft drinks and fast food

garbage.

Finally, a couple of interesting photos; the first from my friend Tommy and his thoughts on Waitangi Day: This shot I took says it all about Waitangi Day. We will never travel by waka again, but remembering what was, by bringing out our Takitimu waka, is paramount. Waitangi Day this year was a step forward for Tauranga Moana. Let’s hope we continue to walk forward together remembering the old and celebrating the new. Tommy Kapai, Te Puna.

One of the Bay of Plenty’s spectacular parks is finally able to share its rich history with visitors.

McLaren Falls has opened the brand new information and historical centre on Thursday, February 9.

The information centre, located opposite the cafe, features brand new facilities, an outdoor classroom and an office for the park ranger. The centre also features a six metre board, tracking the park’s journey from a power scheme in the 1900s, through to the public park it is today.

The $380,573 information centre project was built as part of the McLaren Falls Park Reserve Management Plan, which was developed in November 2008.

Cameron Warr says the need for an information centre was identified under this plan and construction began in March 2011.

He says the centre was completed in August 2011, but the “official opening was delayed due to services to the building, signage and the carpark being incomplete”.

McLaren Falls park ranger Gary Borman says roughly 70,000 vehicles and an estimated 150,000 people visit McLaren Falls every year. He says the information centre is important to provide these visitors a detailed history of the park and its many distinguishing features.

largest arboretum – or tree zoo – as well as an equestrian area, barbecues and glow-worm walks.”

Within the park, nearly every tree is accounted for by the Bay of Plenty Tree Society, who are currently installing GPS locators and registering each tree within the arboretum.

With so many people visiting the park, Gary says it takes a lot of volunteer hours to keep the park maintained and, with a real natural world, aesthetic.

“Last year, we did 40,000 hours of volunteer work to keep it ticking. I think the size of it helps to keep it looking untouched as well, as we can have a lot of people in the park, but you don’t really notice it as they are doing different things in different areas.”

Kiwi to hit all Grand Slams This year is going to be a big year for Davis Cup tennis physiotherapist Murray Hing, who is heading to all the Grand Slams in a whirlwind allexpenses-paid international tour.

The leading New Zealand sports strength trainer is in Tauranga this week with the New Zealand Davis Cup team set to play Uzbekistan at TECT Arena at

Baypark this weekend.

As the physio, strength trainer and team manager of the four-strong side, Murray has a big job on his hands, which is now set to get even bigger.

He has just acquired a position to work with World Number 30 tennis player Kevin Anderson and will accompany him to this year’s Masters and Grand Slams, including the United States and French Open and Wimbledon.

“It is any tennis players dream to go

and watch one Grand Slam, let alone all four,” says Murray.

“I am just sitting here pinching myself, here I am going to watch it all from the inside and meet my idols; Nadal, Federer, Dijokovic.”

Murray, who started treating Kevin through a Kiwi tennis connection, has been working on Kevin’s knee injury and just found out about the offer late last week.

“I had been treating him for a knee injury, before then he hadn’t been able to play for three months, but we worked on it and he was able to hit the ball with no pain at all.”

Murray’s first stint with Kevin was at the Australian Open in Melbourne in January 2012, where he had a close encounter with then World Number One Caroline Wozniacki.

“I was in the players lounge and grabbed some lunch, sat down at the table and was talking to this woman, thinking ‘she really looks familiar’, then after she left another player said – gee you lucky thing you were just having lunch with the world number one.”

Murray says spending six months away from his family will be tough, but it is too big of an opportunity to pass up.

“I’m heading to Palm Springs in March for two big tournaments in the US, then back for two weeks, then off to Spain and France in May for the French Open, then July its Wimbledon.”

A tennis lover, Murray began

working with the Davis Cup team two years ago.

Before then, he worked with most New Zealand codes, with the exception of the All Blacks.

Murray is set to remain with the Davis Cup squad and says they have a good chance at heading off Uzbekistan in the tournament, Friday to Sunday, February 10-12.

Demolition continues at old police station The old police station on Monmouth Street is coming down brick by brick, as heavy machinery works to demolish the 46-year-old building.

Demolition of the station started at the beginning of the year, with it now looking like an empty shell instead of a police station.

Former Police Minister Judith Collins announced last year the government’s intention to replace the station with a modern design.

The old building was designed to house only 50 staff and 10 police vehicles, but in recent times had serviced 185 staff and 60 vehicles.

“The opening of the new facility won’t come fast enough for Tauranga police,” says Judith.

She says the old station was cramped, in poor condition and did not meet the needs of a modern police service.

Staff are currently housed in a temporary site on Third Avenue, with all phone numbers remaining the same.

Once deconstruction of the old station is complete, construction of the new 3900Sqm facility will begin.

Judith says the new building is expected to bring everyone under one roof, enabling close cooperation and communication between police groups.

The new facility is expected to be fully operational about mid-2013.

Te Puke business people – including retailer Trudy Rowe – have endorsed plans being promoted by Focus Te Puke coordinator Mark Boyle, for an economic development group for the district.

Te Puke businesses have endorsed plans for a new economic development group to foster growth in the district.

A series of consultation meetings on the Te Puke Economic Development Group show strong support for the organization, jointly proposed by Focus Te Puke and Te Puke Fast Forward.

Focus Te Puke coordinator Mark Boyle says the group should be established this month.

The group, to be funded by member fees, was being established partly in response to the Psa kiwifruit crisis to promote a diverse economic base and to lay the foundations for sustainable

long-term growth.

“There is a good amount of support for us to try to work on initiatives that will support the Te Puke economy, particularly in a period when the whole economy is very flat and Te Puke is under pressure from Psa.” It will focus on attracting new industry sectors and investment, supporting the town centre redevelopment and working with the primary sector to explore alternative land uses.

“We want to help businesses to better perform and generally try to leverage off all the strengths of the district so we can add growth and development,” says Mark.

He says while Psa has had a major impact on the district’s economy, he does not believe any

businesses had closed because of it, although some had shifted away.

“Industrial, services and retail have all been affected by Psa with the ongoing uncertainty and reduced spend.”

Te Puke retailer Trudy Rowe of Ceramico Designer Tiles is among the many businesses backing the group, describing it as an “outstanding” plan.

“I hope it will future-proof us against the bypass – I hope that people will embrace the ideas and help to make Te Puke a destination,” says Trudy.

Trevelyan’s general manager Stephen Butler says the packhouse and coolstore business was “very supportive” of the new group.

Starting from a young age Briana Hair loved performing, but early attempts to channel this energy into ballet failed because she did not like the frills and tutus.

After giving up ballet classes at age five, the English native poured more energy into her gymnastics.

Ten years on, the Katikati College student has just got back from international competitions in Hawaii, where she and Papamoa gymnast Bailee Eastlake both competed strongly.

Both girls, aged 15, are delighted with their success which saw them finish among the top five

place-getters in fields of about 15 top competitors from the Pacific region. They both now have their eyes set firmly on making the cut for the international event next year.

For Bailee, gymnastics has also been a love since taking it up when she was five. She thrives on achieving the high goals she sets herself.

“I absolutely love it. I couldn’t imagine life without it.”

Bailee took fifth place overall in the Aloha GymFest competition and fourth overall in the Gymnastics in Paradise event – including being first for vault in both competitions and second in beam for one.

Briana was third overall in both competitions, including being first and second for floor routines and

second in vault for one.

The pair train at Argos Gym in Judea four days a week, where they also train learners. They earned the rights to compete at the Hawaii event against top gymnasts from Australia, Japan, Canada, USA and Guam after both competed strongly at last year’s national gym championships.

In a sport in which few competitors go beyond their late teens, Briana is determined to keep up gymnastics as long as she can.

“It’s the love of it – it’s always different and always things you can learn and it challenges you.”

Kenyan ‘gap year’ mission

Inspired by the experience of friends helping in Kenya last year, young couple Jessica Noone and Josh Houlton are raising funds to go to Kenya next month.

Since graduating from Otumoetai College last year, the pair have been working hard to raise money for their four-month mission with Team Kenya.

Jessica says they both love the idea of helping make a difference with a ‘gap year’ experience that will also enrich them, before returning to tertiary study next year.

“We want a new perspective on what we want to do and on the world and to open our eyes to things. We wanted to help make a difference where we can.”

The pair wanted some world experience before deciding what to do next.

They are both juggling working long hours in full-time jobs, with fundraising duties – including running weekly sausage sizzles at Ferguson Park, a raffle and encouraging people to support their mission with donations at www. gofundme.com (browse for ‘Help Josh and Jess’).

Whilst in Kenya, the pair will live in a mud hut in the same area as friend’s Lydia Bennet and Mat

“We will be helping establish buildings in this village, volunteering daily hours at the local orphanage, and will also be teaching music, English and computer skills at schools around the district,” says Jessica.

“We truly have our hearts set on helping these Kenyans after seeing their photos and hearing their stories.”

Volunteering in Vietnamese orphanage A burning desire to help make a difference for the less fortunate has motivated Tauranga mother Hannah Harwood to volunteer in a Vietnamese orphanage from next weekend.

Hannah has always liked the idea of helping in an orphanage, but her dream only became a reality after recently meeting the owners of Agape Children’s Home in Ho Chi Minh City who encouraged her to get involved.

She learnt of the small privatelyrun orphanage through friends who had volunteered

themselves, then met the owners when they recently visited.

Hannah says most of the children have come from the street and she would be helping wherever she can during her fortnight there.

“I will be just fitting in where I can to help, helping with the home schooling and cooking and just mucking in where I can.”

As a treat for the children, she is taking trinkets such as stickers, small toys and sweets and is keen to hear from anyone wanting to donate items for her to take.

“These children come from horrific backgrounds, so I want to take any little treats.”

Riding under cover

After a year of fundraising and six months disruption to riding for disabled programmes, the work all paid off when Tauranga RDA began lessons at its new equestrian therapy centre this week.

Tauranga RDA chief executive Kat Macmillan says she and her team have been heaped with praise by riders and their families who were excited to be able to use the new covered pavilion in Welcome Bay. “It’s been absolutely amazing, everyone is loving it,” says Kat. “The parents are loving being there, the kids are loving it and the coaches are loving working in that environment.”

Along with offering shelter from the rain, the roof is helping protect the medically disabled riders from the sun’s heat and getting sun-burnt.

Photo by Tracy Hardy “For me it’s just so exciting,” says Kat. “With the eight months building project, I was nervous that it wouldn’t turn out as well as thought, but it’s actually even better than we hoped and dreamed.”

A hoist to lift riders – which was funded by the Legacy Trust – now enables Tauranga RDA to provide riding therapy for those people who are too big to lift onto a horse by the coaches and volunteers.

“A lot of adults they are just too big to lift on. If they are paraplegic or quite extremely physically

disabled, even with four or five strong people it can be extremely difficult to lift someone with no muscle tone and sit them down safely on a horse.

“But with the hoist, that takes away all the safety issues for the handlers and the people can still receive the benefits of equestrian therapy.”

She says this opens up a whole new avenue of clients they were unable to support with therapy before – including people on ACC, road traffic accident victims or those with MS. To see a video of riders enjoying the centre visit www.sunlive.co.nz

The pair starts out with the beach relay event, before jumping in the boat for IRB races.

Kirby says the goal is to win the under-19 competition, like they did last year, but not racing up against premiere teams before, the boys are unsure how they will fare in the open division. “We train about three or four times a week, a couple of hours each night to be ready,� says Kirby. “We have also stepped up the weights at the gym, more time in the boat and practising beach drags for when we have to drag the boat along the beach – sometimes quite a way at low tide.

When you’re out on the surf, rough conditions taking its toll on your Inflatable Rescue Boat, it is good to know you can count on the man in the boat with you.

For identical twins Kirby and Chad Wheeler, 19, it is more than just counting on one another – they have a strong, brotherly connection. “We get along really well and know each other well enough to trust what the other one will do,� says Chad. “We are pretty close, get on well with each other,� says Kirby, “which makes it easier to read each other in the boat.�

In the under-19 section, both Wheelers predict Taranaki is the team to beat and the most challenging.

When it comes to open, they agree they are unsure how it will go, considering they are up against “all the big drivers�, including world number one Andrew Cronin and crewman James Moorwood from East End club and Taranaki.

Not to be deterred though, Kirby says the open division is a big step up, but “a really good opportunity�.

Well he has, I have been kept busy trying to keep my worldly possessions from being torn to shreds by my off-sider Flo; a canine equivalent of a mobile disposal unit.

She is turning out to be one hell of a mate, but unfortunately my teaching skills are not that great – having her following me around in the wild, searching out the scent of ducks, purple chickens and black swans is not going that well.

She is proving to be just the ticket fetching sticks and swimming in warm lakes, but the real test begins in a few months when she has to earn her keep by jumping into ice cold water to retrieve downed game that may, or may not, fall out of the sky.

I should not be too hard on her, as she is only six months old and it has taken me three years to get the hang of it. Just recently, my two-legged family had to go to Tania and Andy’s wedding in that place up the road where ‘jaffas’ come from and stress levels know no bounds.

We were not invited to the nuptials for some reason – I cannot understand why they couldn’t see the merits of having a huntaway cross (perpetual motion) a silver labrador (cake devourer) and a GSP (German precision, well I had to say that) at the party.

Just because of Flo having a near miss with Auntie Katie’s chocolate mud cake during Christmas, Rosie’s unhealthy interest in long flowing robes, and my predilection for sniffing out anything I can chase, it was decided the three bitches were not included on the invitation.

Who in their right mind wants to spend a weekend in Auckland anyway when they can get booked into ‘Absolutely Precious Paws’ – the new five star hotel in Tauranga.

Our ‘hostess with the mostest’ Lisa, soon had us settled in and with breakfast in bed, it proved to be an educational night’s stay – especially when the choir started practising at 3am. Led by the inspirational Rosie. Flo was just bemused and I, well I just don’t sing.

Jumping through This hotel is really five star hoops. for canines; jumps, a tennis ball machine, swing ball, skateboards, sandpits and even internet cameras so our people can check up on us! There are treadmills, televisions and songs to make dogs happy. Bow wow. Apparently you two-leggers can keep an eye on what we are doing via Facebook too. It’s a total waste of time telling my boss that, being the technological retard he is.

A very special thanks to the Precious Paws team for looking after us so well. Make sure you give your beloved dog a treat if you are having a few days away and book them into Precious Paws too.

Flo and I then went out to visit a mate who has just given the world some more puppies. We were pleased when we arrived to see Pipi was breastfeeding her new brood, mind you with seven pups hanging onto your under carriage, why would you not reach for a bottle or two? Possibly of Jack Daniels or Valium. The boss says females have never been the same since the fun police banned Valium. I don’t not know what he means.

Pipi and her brood are doing well and soon enough Sarah and Scott, Pipi’s two-leggers, will have to look at reducing the menace of having eight Jack Russels in the house. Big week ahead for lifesavers It’s a big week for surf lifesaving on our beaches this week with the Lion Foundation NZ Surf League.

Action starts with the under-14 and under16 teams on Thursday and Friday, before the under-19 and open provincial sides do battle at the Mount Maunganui Main Beach during the weekend.

Entry is free – come on down and see the spectacle.

Omanu

Sixty junior surf athletes from Omanu competed with courage and skill at the Eastern Regional junior championships in Ohope last weekend. We had the overall top athletes in the under-8 division, Tommy Gadsbey; the under-11 boys, William Van der Beek; the under-11 girls, Ella Pollock; and both the under-14 boys and girls, Kane Sefton and Jess Gadsbey, as well as many other podium finishes.

We were particularly strong in the under-11 flags, taking out the top-four boys placings and the top six in the girls, while the under-9 girls relay team had three members competing up an age group and still won.

Omanu finished second to neighbours Papamoa; a great preparation for Oceans 12 at the Mount later in the month.

Our Old Salts surf boat crew finished second in the masters at the North Island champs at the weekend – Ady Van der Beek,

Ian Macrae, Don Mcneily, Bob Mitchell and Justin Hesp (combined age unknown!) were even talking about having a crack at the Piha Big Wave Classic in two weeks, but after watching Monday night’s footage, staying at home might be a better option!

Junior surf is back on this Sunday after a week off. The club will also be running the last lifeguard award course for this season.

Our gun juniors added two more trophies to the cabinet at the weekend, winning the historic Bay of Plenty Junior Championship Cup and the new Eastern Regional Junior Championship Trophy at Ohope.

Vengeance or rehab?

Are we being properly served by our legal system?

The guy gets out of his car, and the cyclist dies. It took three expensive court days to decide that the notion of a car door as an offensive weapon was absurd. If he didn’t see her, how could he attack her using the door? The case was a joke.

We might stop him from owning car doors for a time, as for the guy who mistreated dogs (no dogs for eight years). Why not life?

A guy on his sixth drink-driving charge is sent to jail at a cost to the taxpayer of $90,000 per year.

When he comes out, he must undergo rehabilitation.

This guy has a medical problem called alcoholism and needs help, not jail. That $90,000 would buy a lot of treatment.

We have lost sight of the real purpose of a legal system, which is to promote socially appropriate behaviour.

This focus on vengeance must stop.

Mount club members will be watching with pride this weekend, not only at the Lion Foundation NZ Surf League on our own beach, but also over the ditch with fellow Mountie Aimee Berridge making the last two rounds of the Kellogg’s Nutrigrain ironman series. Do us proud Aimee – you have already.

The public have been well behaved at the beach and our quiet patrol days have continued, while our juniors raced really well in Ohope.

The Mount women’s surf boat crew also performed well at the North Island championships, finishing third in the final, while the under-19 boys again stepped up in big surf.

Sweet sweetcorn season It was a very hot and humid day and I was riding around Penang Island being a tourist and taking in the sights.

In a small village near the middle of the island, I stopped by a shaved ice drink stand and there, beside a contraption that looked like an old washing machine mangle, was the vendor with huge blocks of ice and various containers and canned fruits.

He turned the handle of his ice shaver, added palm sugar, red beans, some types of agar set jelly, condensed milk and canned sweetcorn to a plastic bag. The resulting concoction then had a straw added to it.

Corn and Blueberry Bread Makes 1x26cm cake tin Ingredients 1/2 cup fine cornmeal (polenta) 4 cobs of corn, cooked, then kernels cut off 1.5 cups of boiling water 1 Tbsp vegetable oil 1/4 cup molasses 1/4 cup golden syrup 1 egg, well beaten 1 Tbsp active dry yeast 1/2 cup luke warm water 3.5 cups bakers flour 2 cups fresh blueberries

The astonishing flavours that excited my taste buds that day have never been repeated, however I had a new respect for the flavour of corn as a dessert ingredient.

Back in New Zealand, almost every cafe in the country serves corn fritters – the savoury

fritter almost part of our staple diet. Most of us have tried popcorn or cornflakes, other uses include polenta and hominy – both made from dried maize – and a few of us have even relished rotten corn that has fermented in water.

So with the fresh corn cobs available now, I thought I would share an old recipe that I have had success with in the past at delicatessens and more recently, a wine degustation menu.

This very Moorish bread contains golden syrup, molasses and blueberries and can be served with anything containing bacon or toasted and served with a savoury relish.

Method Dissolve the yeast in the warm water with a little flour to form a thin batter, allow foaming up. Stir the cornmeal into the boiling water until mixture thickens. Remove from the heat and stir in molasses, golden syrup, oil and the beaten egg. When the cornmeal mix has cooled, stir in the yeast and mix, then add enough flour to make a stiff dough. Knead for about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Place dough in a large buttered bowl, turn around in bowl so butter covers dough and allow mixture to rise until it doubles in bulk – about an hour. Punch dough down and flatten out into a square, spread on corn and blueberries and carefully roll up like a sponge roll. Press dough into a greased cake tin or a cast iron skillet cover and let to rise again for about 45 minutes. Bake in a preheated oven at 220 degrees for about 40 minutes or until loaf sounds hollow when tapped. Cool on rack and slice only when thoroughly cool.

Bob the (affordable home) builder At Strategy and Policy Committee, Bob Clarkson addressed the elected members in its public forum section on the subject of affordable housing.

Bob told us that contrary to rumours he had gone to Parliament to beat Winston Peters, it had in fact been to promote affordable housing for young couples.

He hadn’t made much headway, he said.

With rents of $300-400-500 he didn’t know how many people managed to live.

Fiddling with house costs only altered prices by 5-10 per cent and what was needed was a dramatic lowering of prices, which was only achievable by slicing land prices together with discounts made possible by bulk material purchase to build the houses.

He proposed building around 150200 affordable homes on land he owned behind the Tauriko service station running down to the Wairoa River.

Fifty per cent of the housing would be affordable at $280,000 including GST, mixed with medium and upmarket houses.

Affordable homes would be 160sqm with three bedrooms and two car garaging on a minimum 400sqm section.

Question time

In response to my questions he said he would guarantee completion of the fully self contained project, no matter what happened, in order to insulate and protect ratepayers from any responsibility.

He would either hook into the Southern Pipeline or put in his own system for wastewater; likewise water and storm water systems.

He had approval in principle, he said, from Transit to build a two-lane roundabout near the Tauriko service station to provide access.

If council was serious about affordable housing then this was an opportunity to provide support in principle too.

He would work through council’s requirements via a private plan change, the same process The Lakes went through to arrive at a detailed acceptable plan.

Please not Smartgrowth

You have to admire Bob’s enthusiasm and energy and what he said he was seeking was council’s political support.

Committee chairman David Stewart said that it should go to Smartgrowth and staff for further investigation.

I took issue with that, that can be the kiss of death. That can come after political support or otherwise.

David tried to fob me off, which as chairman he can do, so I gave notice of a notice of motion to the next full council meeting on February 20.

I lodged this at the end of the meeting and asked for elected member support for Bob’s proposal in principle.

Bob says he can be underway in six months if the red tape can be peeled away.

Mayor Stuart Crosby was concerned about fairness to all parties, particularly competitors.

Bob said market forces should prevail and if other developers had paid too much for their land then that was their problem. Not council’s.

I don’t like the chances of the six month time frame – it is imperative that ratepayers don’t get left to pick up the pieces in the event of an unforeseen failure.

Too often local government misses out on opportunities due to caution, red tape, slow process and lessons learned from being burned historically. But those are considerations not reasons to not pursue the opportunity. That’s how I see this proposal.

During his address Bob said he was lucky to have 50 weeks holiday a year, during which he built buildings, houses and developed land.

The two weeks work he described as ‘when he accompanied his wife on her holidays’ which were in his words “bloody hard work”.

Chop happy

On other matters, the Vegetation and Tree Management Policy was adopted.

This allows commonsense and flexibility over past tree policy documents where it was virtually impossible to deal with an offending tree.

Tug it into town

The Marine Precinct Proposal to replace the 600 ton slipway lost to make way for the harbour bridge is another initiative by this council to stimulate and invigorate the marine sector in Tauranga.

After years of investigation, hampered by an economic downturn, the Taskforce is looking at a 300 tonne travelift facility in conjunction with marine sector representatives.

This basic infrastructure is capital intensive with no real return on investment.

Options for funding do not include ratepayers and there is no budget in the three/Ten Year Plan.

Swimming in debt

The joint TCC/TCAL Draft Aquatics Strategy was approved for your perusal and consultation. The (huge) loss lead-

ers, Memorial Pool, Otumoetai & Greerton are a big problem financially, but serve a public need.

Baywave is doing well and has traded its way remarkably well requiring minimal ratepayer subsidy on operational expenditure.

The Mount Hot Saltwater Pools are a money spinner and despite all the hoo-hah (justified!) over the recent refit, will again make money.

You do have to do maintenance and recent events shouldn’t be repeated.

There is a need for a quantum change as a result of this debacle and one is in the wings as council considers its options in confidential.

Hairy park, not a trail

There is huge international interest, elected members were told by Creative Tauranga manager Tracey RuddickGudsell, in the Hairy Maclary display proposal.

After a year of meetings it has been decided not to have a Harry Maclary trail, but to have one centralised display on the waterfront.

The display, to cost $800,000 will be funded by private donation including a $150,000 maintenance fund to be lodged with council.

Characters will be cast in bronze and will be about 30 per cent bigger than real size.

Comfort for veterans

Last week’s column about war veterans’ overseas travel to commemorate events drew some comment.

Apparently business class is now available to the veterans, paid by the taxpayers – the very least we can do!

Supermarket call too early

Media reports of a new supermarket at Bureta on the old Trust Hotel site are a bit premature.

Council has not even received a consent application as

far as elected members know, let alone approved it.

Perry Foundation, which is a city partner, picked up this property, assets and business from Tauranga Charitable Trust for $1 on the understanding that the good work of the Tauranga Charitable Trust in the Tauranga area would continue.

Hopefully the proceeds of a sale will remain in Tauranga to further the charitable work that was/is intended.

A good cyclist is seen and heard Biking around the city is a fun and active way to keep costs down, as well as getting in great shape, but with more cyclists as well as motorists on the road, keeping bike-smart is vital to your safety.

The very first and most important safety check is making sure the bike is legal: Brakes need to be on the front and back wheels, with a rear reflector, and lights must be used at night if cycling.

New Zealand Transport Agency rules dictate you must always wear an approved safety helmet. About threequarters of all cycling deaths are caused by head injuries. Cycle helmets reduce the risk of brain injury by up to 88 per cent and the risk of facial injury by up to 65 per cent for cyclists of all ages.

Bike Wise coordinator Nicki Miller says it is important for cyclists and pedestrians to ‘Share with Care’ this Bikewise Month.

“Both walkers and cyclists need to watch out and be respectful of each other. Cyclists should ring their bells when approaching behind pedestrians to warn they are there – this is

especially important around walking groups and elderly people,” says Nicki.

“Cyclists may think it is rude to ring their bell, but really they are helping out the pedestrians by warning them, ensuring pedestrians don’t get a fright and have time to move into a safe position on the walk/ cycle-way.”

Tauranga City has 70km of marked road cycle ways and 45km of walkways – a lot of these walkways are also shared with cyclists.

Nicki says cyclists should always wear bright colours or reflective clothing and always follow the road rules of motorists at intersections.

Other top tips are to signal correctly with hand signals, use your eyes and ears and remember ring your bell when sharing cycle ways/walkways.

Healthy baby boomers – part one Hi there baby boomers. I have just turned 57 and our 50s are a watershed age for our health.

In our teens and 20s, we were indestructible; we seem to be able to eat poorly and not exercise and generally break all the health rules and for most, get away with it. Even in our 30s we seemed to escape the consequences of health neglect.

It all started to change, however, in our 40s. The first signs of potential heart disease started to appear with rising cholesterol and blood pressure.

Most of us started to notice our joints misbehaving with problems ranging from osteoarthritis to general wear and tear.

For many, especially women, we start to see the emergence of autoimmune diseases. Central to all these problems is the body’s immune system, especially when the way it governs inflammatory processes gets completely out of balance. Many experts, including leading cardiologist and cardiac researcher Paul Ridker MD, PhD have concluded inflammation in coronary arteries to be the main driver of coronary artery disease.

The really sad fact is almost all chronic and degenerative disease is to a great extent caused by sub-optimum levels of important micro-nutrients.

The top of the list are the antioxidant enzyme building trace elements such as selenium, zinc and boron.

This is followed by low levels of the most potent dietary antioxidants such as the proanthocyanidins in grape seeds.

I think we all have our own times of ‘stuff happens and I try to cope’.

How do we face a situation that demands more resources than we may have? For most of us, we absorb the situation, just dealing with it as best as we can.

This ‘on the fly’ approach though can have long-term detrimental effects on our physical and emotional wellbeing.

There are many help organisations listed on Webhealth BOP that can assist us to deal with conflicting emotions and the huge changes that can occur during the stressful times in our lives.

Here’s some useful tips for dealing with our own version of Quake Belly: 1. Stick to a routine. A time of emotional turmoil can disrupt almost every area of our life, amplifying feelings of stress, uncertainty and chaos. Getting back to a regular routine can provide a comforting sense of structure and normalcy. Remember to sleep.

2. Make time each day to nurture ourselves. Help ourselves by scheduling daily time for activities we find calming and soothing. Go for a walk in nature, listen to music, enjoy a hot bath, get a massage, read a favourite book or savour a warm cup of tea.

3. Take a time out. Try not to make any major decisions in the first few months after a time of high stress, like starting a new job or moving to a new city. If we can, wait until we’re feeling less emotional so that we can make better decisions.

4. Avoid using alcohol, drugs or food to cope. When we’re in the middle of a high stress time, we may be tempted to do anything to relieve our feelings of pain, anxiety or loneliness. But using alcohol, drugs or food as an escape is unhealthy and destructive in the long run. It’s essential to find healthier ways of coping with painful feelings.

5. Explore new interests. Pursuing fun, new activities gives us a chance to enjoy life in the here-and-now,

Argument-avoiding Valentine movies As Valentine’s Day looms, movies or DVDs on the couch are often a popular choice for couples, both the first-daters and the long-term couple.

So here are, from my movie-expert brain, my pros and cons of movie genres for Valentine’s Day to help avoid the awkward argument in the middle of the video store/cinema and provide you with good banter after the screening.

The romantic comedy:

It goes without saying, the romantic comedy epitomises Valentine’s Day (so much so, they even made a recent movie about it…called Valentine’s Day). But despite what you may think, this shouldn’t always be your first port of call for movie time.

Girls will love them, and guys will loathe them. Why? Because these movies set unrealistic, Disney-style notions of love and relationships that will leave the girl resentful thinking,

‘why couldn’t my boyfriend be more like Noah (from The Notebook) or Edward (from Twilight)?’

The key to rom-com is balance. My personal favourite is comedies that have the two protagonists getting together in the end, but ultimately rely on good humour to get you through the film.

The scary movie:

What better way to get your partner or first-date to snuggle up than by finding the scariest movie possible? If she, like me, is a big wuss, she will be looking for any way to cover her eyes and scrunch into the smallest ball on the couch possible.

If she is your first date, you will be nervous of course and nothing takes the tension out of the situation than her irrational fear of monsters/ghosts/ possessed children/serial killers.

The action film:

Like the reverse of the romantic comedy, the action film is designed for men. Attractive girls, fast cars, bullets,

Thriller is tricky – it can either be a horror in disguise (Saw is classed as a thriller) or it can deal with very heavy-handed issues and potentially uncomfortable subject matter. Best to stick to light-

hearted material for a first date or if you and your partner enjoy a good intellectual debate, thrillers could be for you. Remember to throw in key film-theory words like psychoanalysis, surrealism, European art house, canted angles and saturated mis-en-scene to win your point.

‘Pedal Your Heart Out’ is an urban mountain bike ride, being held as part of Bike Wise Month.

It is aimed at introducing cyclists to local on-road and off-road tracks around the city and is suitable for people with moderate levels of fitness. The ride is Wednesday, February 15, leaving Papamoa College carpark at 5.45pm.

Participants are encouraged to get into the spirit by dressing up in red and making a gold coin donation to the Heart Foundation and be in the running for prizes.

Keeping up a five year tradition, the Otumoetai ‘City on its Feet’ walking group is again hosting the ‘Red Walk’, leaving the Beach Road end of Otumoetai Road at 9am on Tuesday, February 14.

With longer and shorter courses available, walkers are encouraged to bring morning tea, utilise the coffee cart available and take time to enjoy the harbour side after their walk. “Walking is great for heart health and is something that most

Climbing up to achieve fitness goals Was increasing your fitness one of your New Year’s resolutions?

Have you thought about walking up the Mount, but don’t feel like you have the confidence or fitness to reach the top?

Climbing up the Mount is a great challenge and if you would like support and encouragement along the way then the Mount Challenge may be just right for you.

The Mount Challenge is an eight week training series with the goal of walking to the summit of Mauao. The group is supported and motivated by trained coordinators from Sport Bay of Plenty, who run the Green Prescription programme. Green Prescription is a free service aimed at giving support and motivating individuals to become more physically active.

The Mount Challenge programme is designed to

gradually build the group’s fitness and confidence as they get higher and closer to their goal. The group starts off walking on the flat tracks and during the eight weeks, gradually increases walking the hills.

The group is designed for people with low fitness levels – if you can walk comfortably for about 30 minutes on the flat and you enjoy exercising in a social group this would suit you.

This has been a very popular and successful walking group, with previous groups continuing to walk once or twice a week after completing the challenge. The new group is meeting on Monday evenings at 5pm and Thursday mornings at 9am starting Monday, February 27.

A helping hand around home A warm welcome to the start of February, more settled weather, children off to school, leaving preschool children often at home without siblings to play with.

So what to do with these natural early birds who are up at the crack of dawn and itching to do things?

Children love to be a part of the action, to be involved and to feel useful. They

are little beings with big egos, wanting to feel important. Allowing them to help with the daily activities around the house instills a sense of importance, belonging and is great for children’s confidence, education, empowering them and making them responsible.

We can empower our preschool children in many ways and at the same

time keep them occupied, stop the boredom-induced whining, get things done, educate them and learn things about our children’s development.

Here are some examples of just a few tasks to let your children loose on: Cooking – let your child break the eggs into the bowl. You will be amazed how quickly they learn to do this without crushing the shell or adding the shell to the ingredients!

Putting out the Washing – children love handing the clothes up for putting on the line. By doing so, they can learn counting, colours and cooperation to name a few.

Doing errands – children’s comprehension and understanding improves with practise.

Gardening – have some wee pots for seeds and a special plot for their plants alongside the main garden for them to weed and water. If dad

has some digging to do, get a little spade for your child – they will be keen as mustard to help.

Picking and tidying up – start young and reap the rewards!

Setting the table – something that may take a while to achieve a sense of order, but well worth the exercise to give your preschooler a sense of belonging and being part of the home organisation.

The one thing preschoolers may spend too much time being occupied with is TV. There is little quality time achieved watching TV with your preschooler.

Allowing your preschooler to be involved in daily routines may seem tedious at first, but with some

patience and understanding that ‘practise makes perfect’, you will observe the developments in your child as they unfold and a sense of fulfillment as your little one tries and tries again and succeeds in the journey of life.

Teaching children coordination skills

Get children learning and developing without them even knowing it with the Gyminis programme.

Research indicates that up to 30 per cent of young children have coordination problems and are developmentally immature in their physical abilities.

This is due to societal changes that prevent young children from exploring their environment and technological advancements that provide sedentary activity options.

Unleashing new creative ideas A fun children’s day out for preschoolers – offering free activities for children, along with learning workshops for parents and caregivers – is in Tauranga next Saturday.

Kid’s Day Out is organised by Tauranga-based in-home early childhood educator Footsteps as part of the official opening of its new offices opposite the Historic Village.

Footsteps co-founder and chief executive Kelvin Christie says the organisation – which offers fully-funded learning programme for babies, preschoolers and their caregivers – is continually developing fun, new ways to learn in the home.

“We’ll be sharing some of these at the Kid’s Day Out, which will give parents and caregivers an idea of the type of support we provide to more than 1500 children and caregivers nationwide,” says Kelvin.

Workshops will give parents and caregivers a chance to discover some of the learning activities

they can do at home. An example being demonstrated is called ‘Dishy Fishes’. It involves children cutting a triangle out of a paper plate to create a fish mouth, creating a tail by gluing the triangle to the back of the plate then decorating the fish. Tauranga-based Footsteps teacher Kylie Powell says ‘Dishy

Fishes’ help children discover their creativity, while developing motor skills. The Kid’s Day Out includes a bouncy castle, face painting, balloon sculpting and a raffle for a children’s bike and helmet.

One of the reasons so many are glued to sports is because it’s becoming one of the few areas in society were excellence is encouraged and rewarded.

We love seeing a competitor rise above the others to become great. We want to know who the tournament champion is, who was awarded the highest honour, how did they get there, who was their mentor, master coach.

Do we still strive for excellence everywhere in society?

Is that what we reinforce to our children?

Last year, I listened to a well-meaning sports coach talk to the kids about the coming season; “I want everyone to stay focused on having fun, that’s what were here for. I don’t care if you lose every game, we’re here to have fun”.

I don’t think the coach realised the bright lights in those eager young eyes went a little dim. “I don’t want to see crying either if you fail, drop the ball, muck it up – I still want you coming off the field with a smile on your face for competing”.

What! Let’s back the truck up! How about getting angry at loosing, channelling that anger into working and practising harder than the other guy. I’ve even seen All Blacks cry in defeat and I knew that passion would lead to future victory.

Crying – surely we want our kids upset at a loss? That coach and his team ended up winning two out of 16 games and no one really had any fun. They lived up to the expectation at the outset.

We can’t confuse our kids with telling them to go out and have fun. Fun in their mind is PlayStation, TV, going out for ice cream. We must teach them what fun is. Fun is practising what you love, fun is doing the practise and playing the game with a good attitude. Fun is realising you made a mistake and learning from it. Fun is the sheer joy of excellence, to do something really well is to enjoy it. One of the greatest things we teach at Mile High Karate is what fun really is.

Even the most devoted couple will experience a ‘stormy’ bout once in a while. A grandmother, celebrating her golden wedding anniversary, once told the secret of her long and happy marriage.

“On my wedding day, I decided to make a list of ten of my husband’s faults which, for the sake of our marriage, I would overlook.” A guest asked the woman what some of the faults she had chosen to overlook were. The grandmother replied, “To tell you the truth, my dear, I never did get around to listing them. But whenever my husband did something that made me hopping mad, I would say to myself, ‘Lucky for him that’s one of the ten!’”

We may laugh at this, but anyone who is married will experience a ‘stormy’ bout once in a while. For many in today’s society would probably wonder how someone could stay married to the same person for 50 years. We are on our 20th year and we are so glad we went through a pre-marriage course before we got married. It was a lot of fun and helped us to have realistic expectations of marriage and of one another.

In fact, for our 21st wedding anniversary, I’m going to suggest to my wife that we schedule ourselves for another Marriage Course – it can only turn our good marriage into a great one and an example to others!

Marriage Week – 2012 Marriage is an important building block in the structure of New Zealand society. Strong marriages help build strong relationships and families which make for good communities and country.

As you can tell, I am a big fan of marriage. Marrying my wife over six years ago is the best thing I have ever done. By getting married Natalie and I made it clear to ourselves and others that we were committed to each other for better and worse.

Now, as we are about to have our first child, I can also see that marriage is a great foundation within which to have children. I believe it will play a part in ensuring our child knows he is being brought up within a loving, stable parental relationship.

I hope Marriage Week will be a time when we can all reflect on our relationships and our families and how we can make them stronger.

Learning to skilfully immigrate Moving to a new country and starting a new job can be a difficult task and there is nothing worse than the fear of not being able to communicate effectively.

Literacy and Language Bay of Plenty offers a free English language service to new migrants and refugees who are permanent residents in New Zealand.

The programme functions by pairing migrants with volunteer tutors, who are trained by the centre. Once a week they visit the migrant in their home for an

hour and a half to help them with English skills that can alleviate the stress of moving to a new country.

Literacy and Language BOP language services manager Philippa Cairns says more than 7000 migrants are serviced nationally, with Literacy and Language being one of 22 centres that offer the programme.

“We help them with their English to make their settlement more effective,” says Philippa.

“Such as how to shop, going to the doctors, having their children at school, getting a drivers licence and helping them take the next step to integrate within the community in community groups.”

Philippa says the centre has 26 different nationalities on the books, with the most travelling from India.

From Katikati to Te Puke, the 150

Tauranga MP Simon Bridges with a group class of migrants, educating them about the New Zealand government system. volunteers work with 200 families.

The centre also provides group classes. The centre is always on the lookout for tutors, with all training provided by the centre.

“The tutors often end up becoming really good acquaintances with

the new migrants,” says Philippa.

“Some tutor them for over a year and end up knowing them really well, where their strengths in the language lie and give them the confidence to integrate into the community.”

“My children can’t wait for the term to start,” says Rita Tustin from Mount Maunganui Playcentre. “You mention Playcentre during the holidays and they are all racing for the car.”

Playcentre caters for children from birth to school age, offering mixed-age sessions that ensure siblings can participate together. Older children learn leadership skills, responsibility and consideration with younger children, while younger children learn by watching older children.

“I like it because you can be there with your children playing with them and helping them learn,” says Mel Pendergast from Te Puna Playcentre.

“You get to do stuff you wouldn’t think of yourself, like a fountain or waterfall in the sandpit.”

Truly Godfrey, a member of Omokoroa Playcentre, says getting involved in Playcentre helped her re-touch with her ‘inner child’ once she had her own children.

“Being able to play for a couple of hours with all the equipment and just have fun with my children instead of worrying about the jobs I had to do at home, really gave me good friendships with them.

“You see things from their perspective.”

It is often not practical for families to provide a wide variety of equipment, so an early learning environment complements the learning at home. The environment at Playcentre includes outdoor and indoor activities such as playdough, jigsaw puzzles, carpentry tables with real tools, sandpits and climbing equipment, books, musical instruments, dancing and dress-ups.

“Playcentre was a good preparation for school for my children,” says Truly.

“All my kids have done really well academically and I know all the adults at Playcentre who knew them and their interests and passions, have contributed to their confidence and creativity.”

Playcentres operate during the school term and most should be up and running for the year by early February.

Harold’s back to visit Bay of Plenty schools Pa and Mount Maunganui Primary.

The Life Education programme is a specialist health resource for schools offering 19 modules to primary and intermediate-aged New Zealand kids.

The highly trained specialist teachers take lessons involving healthy eating, relationships, self-esteem and cover topical issues such as drugs and bullying.

Life Education founder Trevor Grice says young people are “such an important part of our society”.

A lucky group of children heading back to school this week are being greeted by a friendly and trusting friend, Harold the Giraffe – mascot of the Life Education Trust.

Harold has been visiting Kiwi kids for 24 years and during the course of this school year, will see nearly half of the 450,000 primary and intermediate-aged children in New Zealand.

Asking the right mortgage questions A mortgage is likely to be your biggest financial commitment.

So it’s important that you know just what you can and can’t do with a home loan, and what the costs are, before you sign up.

Make sure you get (and understand) the answers to these questions: 1. What fees do you charge?

For all loans, ask about application fees and other charges such as a low equity fee.

For fixed interest loans, ask what fees apply if you want to lift the repayments, make lump sum repayments or repay the whole loan early.

2. What will be the total cost of this loan, including fees and interest, for the sum I am borrowing and the term I have chosen?

The lender will have to make an assumption about interest rates to do this calculation, but it will show you how much you’ll pay back in total.

Ask for the fees to be shown separately from the interest. Also, ask for the total regular payment in a year if the interest rate were to be one per cent higher

than now. That will give you some idea of the risk to your budget if rates rise.

3. What changes can I make after the mortgage is set up?

For all loans, ask whether you can increase your regular payments from time to time, whether you can pay in lump sums and whether you can pay off the mortgage in full before the end of its term.

Ask if you have to give any period of notice before reducing or paying off your loan with a one-off payment. Fixed interest loans normally convert to a floating rate at the end of the term: Ask if you can take another fixed term instead at no charge.

4. If I buy a new house, can I transfer the existing mortgage?

If you can do this, it is likely to save you money in fees.

Building a home from discarded butts Nature has turned rubbish into a resource, with a thrush bird utilising cigarette butts to line its nests.

Papamoa resident Adrian Muller says he saw the cigarette-lined nest in amongst the fuchsia display went he visited the Mitre 10 store in Papamoa.

He told staff, who informed him the same female thrush had built similar nests in the store all summer.

“They showed me two other abandoned nests she built and raised young in already.

Changing spots on the sun The ‘Maunder Minimum’ is the name given to the period from 1645 to 1715 when the number of sunspots – ‘storms’ on the sun – became almost zero.

The period is named after the solar astronomer Edward Walter Maunder (1851-1928) who, while working at The Royal Observatory at Greenwich, discovered the dearth of sunspots.

During one 30-year period within the Maunder Minimum there were only about 50 sunspots compared with a more typical 40,000. Maunder was a driving force in the foundation of the British Astronomical Association and was a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The sun was well observed during the period of the Maunder Minimum and this lack of sun-

spots is well documented. This period of solar inactivity corresponded to a climatic period called the ‘Little Ice Age’ when rivers that are normally ice-free, froze and snow fields remained at low altitudes throughout the year.

There is evidence the sun had similar periods of inactivity between 1100 to 1250 and 1460 to 1550.

Sunspots generally follow a cycle of about 11 years, but cycles have varied from 8 to 15 years. The connection between solar activity and the earth’s climate is an area of on-going and sometimes controversial research.

Time will tell whether the sun will once again go into another ‘Maunder Minimum’ within the lifetime of the present generation.

A sunpot is a relatively dark, sharply defined region on the solar disc – marked by an umbra (dark area) which is 2000 degrees cooler

than the effective photospheric temperature. The average diameter of a sunspot is 4000km, but can exceed 200,000km.

The NASA Solar Physics website includes information on sunspot numbers, the ‘Maunder Minimum’ and cycle predictions.

The sunspot index is updated monthly and available from 1749.

The last time the monthly sunspot number was above 100 was September 2002 when the value was 109.6 and the last time the value was above 200 was in August 1990 when the value was 200.3.

No sunspots were observed in September 2009.

The next ‘Weather Eye’ on February 24 will show a graph of the rainfalls in Tauranga for March from 1898 to 2011.

Rocking hard for Christchurch Tauranga metal band Machete Justice are doing their part for Christchurch homes.

Kiwi metal music is raising money for Christchurch homes affected by the earthquake, with the new Kiwi FM compilation album.

The two-disc compilation album, ‘Rising from the Rubble’, features 32 tracks of hardcore and metal music from Aotearoa’s leading genre acts such as In Dread Response, Subtract, Sinate and The House of Capricorn, as well as Tauranga’s own Machete Justice.

Machete Justice lead singer Tarquin Keys says the band wanted to be on the album “to do our very small part to help those people down there, in a way that would continue to help as long as it kept selling.

“None of us have any family down there, but we know a lot of musicians that live there and it’s hard to imagine what they are still going through.”

Organiser Matt Bell from Kiwi FM was deeply affected by the 2011 earthquakes in Christchurch and saw a need to support a cause that is so close to home.

Matt began talking with bands featured on his specialty radio show and others in the live circuit to pitch the idea of a fundraising album, with all proceeds going to those who suffered in the earthquakes.

Deadboy Records were approached about a handful of bands from the label and ideas about sponsorship were discussed, which led to the label offering their full support with the backing of major distributor Universal Music to release and distribute ‘Rising From The Rubble’ nationwide. All profits are donated directly to the New Zealand Red Cross to support earthquake victims and provide relief in Canterbury.

Chinese cash cockies Ratepayer donation When Hamish Hancock from the Crown Law Office was questioned in the Wellington High Court recently, regarding the Governments approval for Shanghai Pengxin Group to purchase the 16 Crafar farms, he maintained the Chinese company met all the necessary requirements to buy the farms, and went on to say, specific dairy farming experience was not required.

This suggests the only relevant criteria that this Government is really interested in for foreigners to buy our farmland, is that they must be well-resourced with overseas funds. The Overseas Investment Office (OIO) must have also applied

the same criteria to the Canadian movie mogul James Cameron, when he recently purchased two farms in the Wairarapa, as he also has no farming experience. I guess Mark Zuckerburg, Bono and other the multi- millionaires from Facebook can expect a phone call from Mr Keys telling them the rest of NZ is also up for sale. They probably neither have any farming experience, so their application shouldn’t be too much of a problem either, as they all now meet the main criteria for foreigners wanting to purchase our property, everything else is trivial.

Whilst agreeing that a university campus will be a benefit to the inner city I wonder whether or not the implications of basically donating, rent free, a $4.5 million site towards this proposal is really the best use of what is a ratepayer owned property.

In the same week that the councillors turned down a $600,000 advertising campaign to assist in promoting the Bay following the Rena event, along with the announcement of a bailout of $5 million for Baypark the councillors also decided to donate a valuable inner city property to what is basically a Government department.

Is this really the best use of a ratepayer owned property when in effect serious consideration should have been given towards either selling it (would it not be a good site for a hotel which seems to currently be in the too hard parcel

for Council?) or renting it at a commercial rate?

A 33 year lease, with no recompense to ratepayers, is without doubt a very generous offer and is a very expensive option for the ratepayers of Tauranga who are facing increasing pressures on rates and also debt levels.

At the stated value of $4.5 million, for this site, even at a return of just 5%, the cost to ratepayers, over the 33 years rent free term of the lease, is at least $7.5 million ($225,000 times 33 years) along with loss of parking rental income of a stated $3.6 million ($110,000 pa times 33 years) resulting in a cost of at least $11.1 million to ratepayers.

On top of this is the stated loss of development contributions of $500,000 resulting in a total of around $11.6 million which seems to me to be an overly generous

Only fools persevere to error Tauranga City Ventures Ltd, who operate Baypark, is to receive from the TCC. $5 million over the next three years. Without securing these funds, this council controlled organisation would have become insolvent.

Currently the operation does not make enough money to even meet the annual interest payments of nearly $1 million. Like any business that is unable to generate sufficient funds to meet all it outgoings the principle loan balance will continue to increase. Sooner or later the loan will become unmanageable, therefore there can only be two outcomes, either Baypark becomes bankrupt, or to avoid this, the council must continuously inject vast sums of money into Baypark for many years to come.

Perhaps Mayor Crosby could do the right thing and sell it. Anyway why do we need or want to own a speedway track?

Councils need sense It’s about time that there was some common sense practised in local councils. The Christchurch CEO pay rise debacle has highlighted what is wrong in NZ. Where do these people get the idea that they are worth, in some cases, three times the pay of the worker who has to contribute towards their lifestyles?

We all have only 24 hours in a day and many workers are having to take two jobs just to keep up with the cost of living, penalised too by more tax for their hard work. If these CEOs and other council workers think they are overworked and have a heavy workload and much responsibility, what are the councillors there for, Ballast?

There is something amiss when the most important people in the country, the rubbish collectors, out in all weathers, undervalued, taken for granted and in general ignored for the very necessary work they do. They earn their money and are worth every cent they are paid. They also have taxes and rates extricated from them to pay these people who believe they are a cut above the rest and worth more, on account of their position.

Without these grass roots workers who keep us free of vermin, disease, filth and rubbish all over the city, we would soon find ourselves in bad health.

How about a huge payrise for these very important workers doing the most important job in the country?

Very recent news items tell us and give visual proof that this summer in the Southern Hemisphere is colder than usual; and the winters in the Northern Hemisphere are also much colder than normal.

So much for the Myth of Global Warming Mr Gore, and others. I believe the matter to be directed to justify the Kyoto tax demands, which itself is a preposterous con. I am still not aware as to who gets to receive this illegal tax from Governments, (including ours) which are naïve enough to swallow this scam. Perhaps some responsible and honest person can enlighten us.

Rena oil recovery ‘opportunity lost’ Noel Wylie compares the oil recovery response of the Costa Concordia to that of the Rena and defends MNZ’s response.

The Costa Concordia listed over onto her side when she sank and, at the time of writing, divers were still searching for bodies from the submerged accommodation.

The Rena ran aground and assumed a modest list to port, and enjoyed perfect weather during the first five days and basically did nothing. (Although it is rumoured the crew had prepared to discharge the oil on the second day).

All her crew was on board, power supplies running, oil transfer pumps working, oil still warm, but was unable to discharge her fuel oil bunkers because there was not any vessel available to receive the oil.

While this opportunity presented itself, the only vessel suitable to take the oil was in Auckland and the Salvors were obliged to haggle with Ports of Auckland for her hire.

The Director of Maritime NZ, (MNZ), Catherine Taylor had the power to requisition the Awanuia and send her directly to Tauranga, discharge her cargo and make ready to receive the oil, indeed it was her duty to speed this process up by doing so.

The Director’s excuses went from contractual obligations of the Awanuia, then had to discharge her cargo in Marsden Point (while we have a tanker wharf here in Tauranga) and finally that it would be too hard to discharge the fuel directly from the Rena. However, it is a simple matter to change a few flanges around and use the transfer pumps to discharge directly to hoses or possibly back through the bunker loading line to deck, particularly when you have a ship repair facility close by.

There has been a lot of positive feedback to the development of a University precinct with land freely given by Council and buildings funded by TECT. I understand that the University is asking for $55 million from TECT. Last year TECT distributed $24.1 to the consumers and $5.75 to community organizations. If TECT were to give that money to the University it could only come from two places – the distributions and grants budget or from investment capital.

It is bizarre that Maritime NZ have so few nautical people in their ranks and none in senior management, despite 20 managers, 14 analysts and 38 advisors (including a spiritual advisor) in their huge staff of over 160.

Indeed MNZ was criticised by an official audit in February last year for not having enough marine qualified personnel and this void was so evident during those first days of the Rena disaster.

There will undoubtedly be further ship wrecks around NZ, it is therefore essential that we have an inquiry so that we may learn as much as possible from the Rena disaster response, so that we are better prepared to deal with such events in the future.

Little protest?

As a newcomer to your beautiful country I watched the election procedure with much interest.

As a totally unexperienced and unbiased onlooker, I was amazed that John Key, who has clearly giving a message that he intended to dictate his terms if he was returned to power, actually won.

Thinking, that clearly there was little opposition, apart from Winston Peters, who was being written off, I expected that in case of National getting in, then the country would suitable protest the asset sales.

How wrong I am. They are now happily selling off a large slice of your prime farmland to a country which has an oppressive government and certainly does not seem to have the best interests of the country at heart.

Frankly, with all the money that has been borrowed in the last bad years, perhaps some has come from China and this is now payback time? One can’t help but wonder?

Sporting beauty in song “I love to speak with Leonard, He’s a sportsman and a shepherd, He’s a lazy bastard living in a suit.”

So starts Leonard Cohen’s new album, one of the most perfect opening (half ) stanzas one can imagine.

Now in his mid-70s, Cohen provides a new pencil sketch of himself that manages at the same time to be witty and self-deprecating while showing that rarest of gifts: the way that a poet can seemingly give words greater meaning than they naturally exhibit.

A sportsman? Surely the most unlikely way to describe Leonard Cohen.

He’s a sportsman the same way that brothels of old used to be ‘sporting houses’.

The way gamblers think they’re sportsmen because they’re part of the game.

And he’s a shepherd, drawing his audience like a flock, keeping them safe with his wisdom. Or (on an album called Old Ideas) is he a shepherd guarding the stores of ancient knowledge, the profound meditations that he turns into songs?

Of course it wouldn’t be a Cohen lyric without the unspoken religious connotation.

And “he’s a lazy bastard living in a suit”. The perfect wry put-down.

It seems Cohen has lived his entire life in a suit as his voice slowly descends through the octaves and he grows – by a lucky quirk of fate that seems to equally amuse and confound him – ever more sage and handsome.

I’ve been listening to Laughing Lenny – in case you couldn’t tell – and his latest album is a thing of profound beauty, a rare and transcendent offering.

Fans won’t need convincing, but will be surprised to learn that two of the three new songs he played in Auckland last year aren’t on it. He’s obviously not short a tune.

There’s actually a lot of new music I’ve

been getting into recently, but the relentlessly busy beginning to the year allows little space to write about it.

So I thought I’d grab a little time this week to share some of the sounds that have been wafting out across the croquet lawn here at the Watusi Country Club in harmony with the gentle clinking of cocktail glasses.

A couple of local releases have provided much pleasure, both of them independent and under the radar of charts or radio.

Beyondsemble are a quartet out of Auckland who might have a slightly clumsy name, but make music that is anything but.

They have been visitors to the Katikati Folk Club and on the New Zealand Live slot of Jim Mora’s National Radio show, and play a delightfully skewed melange of folk music and jazz.

Leading the charge is the accordion of Craig Denham, a virtuoso keyboard fella who seems to be currently playing with about a dozen different bands.

Jessica Hindin’s violin is equally adept.

The album is self-titled and mainly instrumental, running from a wild take on ‘My Favourite Things’, through gypsy jazz, Parisian café music, beautiful folk song and even a raucous country breakdown.

The level of musicianship is exhilarating and it’s a very good sounding album.

Highly recommended.

Other visitors to Tauranga left a CD, and I’m enjoying theirs equally.

The Flaming Mudcats are a hard-driving blues band (also out of Auckland) featuring ex-Darcy Perry Band harmonica player and singer Craig Bracken along with the explosive guitar talents of an old Tauranga hand Doug Bygrave.

Doug used to play with Brilleaux’s Graham Clark and is still remembered for his uniquely authentic guitar style and impressive red suit.

Their debut, Gave You What You Wanted, is a tough exciting blast of electric blues, solid and propulsive, as though the Fabulous Thunderbirds or an equally staunch band had set up in New Zealand.

The songs are original, mostly Craig’s, with three from bass player Sean McCarthy, an instrumental of Doug’s and an offering from country singer Glen Moffat.

Throughout the set Doug’s inventive guitar dominates, continually throwing in unexpected and cool touches and sounds. He is the master of the surprise dynamic.

Craig’s harp playing is stunning too. Long been regarded as one of the country’s finest, he goes a long way to proving that here.

Good honest electric blues – fine songs, well played. What’s not to like?

BTW, both these Kiwi albums are on Ode Records and should be available from all music shops.

TEXAS KILLING FIELDS

Fantastic Not bad at all Dreadful

Starring: Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain. Dir: Ami Canaan Mann Daughter of Michael Mann – who serves as producer here – Ami Canaan Mann has worked mainly as a television and film writer.

Her one previous film as director (2001’s Morning) won awards, but was largely unnoticed. Here she moves into the area often associated with her father’s best work, police investigation, more specifically, the investigation of disappearances and murders of young women in the desolate industrial surrounds of Texas City.

Worthington (considerably more impressive than in Avatar or Clash of the Titans), Morgan and Chastain make for grittily expressive cops.

Mel Gibson isn’t exactly flavour of the month, which might explain why The Beaver took so long to be released. If I remember rightly, the film was the lifeline thrown by friend (and director and co-star) Jodie Foster after the drunken anti-Semitic rant scandal, subsequently held up further by the girlfriend-abusing phone call scandal. It’s a blackly comic family drama with Mel as a clinically depressed husband who finds new life (and fame) through wearing the eponymous handpuppet (which sounds, bizarrely, like Ray Winstone). It’s a brave unsettling, unpredictable film and Gibson – whatever one thinks of his off-screen performances – is superb.

Johnny English was always a Bondian figure so it seems fitting that now that Bond is leaner meaner and grittier that

The former was once married to the latter and Morgan is the relatively new arrival from New York, naive about the risks as all three are inexorably drawn towards the dangers of the titular bayou, a place of almost mythical evil from where you might never return.

The film is strong on its atmosphere of decay and fetid heat. It is beautifully shot and in some places strongly reminiscent of her father’s work. The mystery never rises to the level of a true whodunit but the mood and the landscape are brilliantly evoked and mark the emergence of a talent that will be worth watching. Good stuff.

Johnny English should follow suit. Thus plays it Johnny English Reborn a bit straighter and is very much a spy satire – and a pretty good one – though genre subtleties and the newly-adult approach between gags may escape younger viewers. Rowan Atkinson again proves what a superb comedian he is and his appeal could allow this to straddle the kidult divide. It’s silly, lower budget than the first, and scores for general charm and amiability, rather like the initial film.

Home Office. Danger, complications and political intrigue quickly multiply. This is good stuff, an authentic gritty thriller, very well made with a complex central turn from Kebell and a tough uncompromising feel.

I fell in love with Vera Farmiga’s bottom in In The Air and though it is sadly underdisplayed here she is far and away the best thing about Henry’s Crime . Seemingly a strange choice for Keanu Reeves, this has his ex-con – blank and directionless (and innocent) – deciding to commit the robbery for which he was wrongly committed. This involves an amateur theatre production in which Farmiga stars. James Caan’s tough crim enlivens things a little bit but the plot is insufficiently complex and Reeves sinks the film by being so blank as to suggest somnambulance. Go on Keanu – use your acting!

Husband and wife team and directors of Operatunity, Susan Boland and John Cameron, lead a stellar professional cast that includes Rutene Spooner, featured recently in Coca Cola Christmas in the Park, Angela Franklyn-Lewis, well known for music theatre roles in the UK, Australia and New Zealand and accompanist Alex Wiltshire, who

spent 16 years performing internationally for such companies as Cameron Mackintosh Productions and The Really Useful Company (Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Production Company).

Avocados the focus over coffee How the avocado industry is responding to current and future challenges is the focus of Tauranga’s first Cafe Scientifique of 2012, supported by the University of Waikato.

Avocados: Boom or Bust is being presented by Avocado Industry Council technical manager Dr Henry Pak, who will outline some of the issues facing the avocado industry and the research in progress.

Irregular cropping – where trees do not produce a viable crop every year – is one of the industry’s most problematic challenges. Inconsistency of supply makes it difficult for exporters to supply a market year-on-year and commit to consistent volumes when developing new markets. Adverse climatic conditions and management practices can trigger the problem of irregular cropping.

Root rot, pests and diseases on large trees, and long harvest windows are other challenges facing the industry.

Henry has a research background in plant pathology and post-harvest storage and now heads the AIC’s research programme. His role also involves facilitating market access for avocados, mitigating biosecurity issues and managing the export quality system.

Cafe Scientifique is a forum for debating science issues, where for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass

of wine, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. The Cafe Scientifique series, organised by Julia and Warren Banks and supported by the University of Waikato, aims to promote public engagement and make science accessible.

A photo competition, jointly run

by SunLive and Tourism Bay of Plenty, has drawn hundreds of great photos that show just how much everyone loves the region’s beaches.

The winning entries – as judged by Tourism Bay of Plenty general manager Glenn Ormsby and SunMedia general manager and photographer Ross Brown – all capture the Western Bay of Plenty beaches in their prime.

Ross says they were delighted with the response to the competition and the high standard of entries had made it difficult for them to separate the top images.

Glenn says it was great to see so many top photos of the area’s beautiful beaches being enjoyed – including three of the four winning shots – “showing concerns about the Rena’s impact is well behind us”.

“To me the great standard of photos taken by all these people shows just how much people here in the Bay love their beaches.”

Donna, who has been getting serious about improving her photography during the last two months says it is a great thrill to win.

To capture the natural action shot that she wanted, Donna waded out into the bay and waited for the children to pass by.

“The best shots to me are always natural rather than posed and capture the atmosphere. That was what I was going for.”

Runner-up in the 17-plus age group is Andy Morris for a moody shot along the beach to Mauao from Papamoa in a magical light.

The winning entry in the under-17 age group was a shot by Claire Roderick of fishing off the Matata beach with its balanced composition and colours, while runner-up in the younger section was Daniel Hines for an image of a busy Mount beach, capturing the enjoyment and fun of the beachgoers.

Claire says she is “absolutely rapt” to win the competition.

The winners each won a prize to one of the Bay’s top attractions – including Waimarino Adventure Park, Kiwi 360, rides on the Kaituna Jet or a trip with Pee Jay White Island Tours.

Evangelist to speak in Tauranga Evangelist Weston Carryer from the Zoe Evangelistic Ministry is presenting at Bethlehem Hall on February 12 at 10am.
