Sailing’s silver centurions

Tauranga sailor Peter Burling’s Olympic silver medal alongside Blair Tuke was the 100th medal won by New Zealand in more than a century of competing at the Olympic Games.

That tally may be added to by a handful of other Bay athletes over the coming days, including Tauranga hockey players Samantha Charlton and Gemma Flynn - who will face

off against Great Britain for bronze– as well as Tauranga BMX rider Kurt Pickard and BMX rider Sarah Walker of Kawerau.

Silver sailors, technology failures and safety pins Thank goodness for our happy Olympians!

For many years myself, and a lot of other parents, watched the likes of the Burlings and Saunders sail past our yachting kids. The family joke: they were hard to recognise at the yacht club because on the water we only saw them from behind.

Those top young centreboarders sailed in a class of

their own and good on them. I didn’t lose a lot of sleep over that. It was clear that these guys were champions in the making and they were going on to greater things.

However, these champs have been costing us a lot of sleep this week, as we’ve got up at ungodly hours to watch their continuing rise to the top, on the water off Weymouth. It’s been riveting viewing, even at an inconvenient time.

Congratulations to our local sailors and all those who’ve helped them along the way at the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club, the high performance sailing programmes and their peers and teammates.

A special mention must go to their parents and families who, as we’ve seen over the years, have made enormous commitment to back their champion aspirations.

It takes more than good parenting and support to produce such a medal winning result. It requires sheer drive, determination and ability of the young person, no matter how much a parent wants the child to achieve.

How bizarre

Meanwhile, the Olympics have shown some bizarre contrasts.

On one channel are competitors togged up to the nines, even in top hats for the dressage.

At the other extreme is the sport we’ll call undressage – female competitors wearing almost nothing.

The most bizarre part of the games however, is this: that in this technological age, with rovers on Mars and cameras that automatically detect faces – competitors in the games still have their numbers attached by safety pins. Unbelievable.

The Burling silver has brightened an otherwise grumpy week at RR headquarters this week, not helped by broken sleep.

There have been some miserable moments, such as the dishwasher giving an F4 error. We have no idea what that means and as usual, can’t be bothered reading the manual to find out.

I’d have to put down the Sky remote to read it. It beats me why, in this day and age, when we’ve played golf on the moon, landed rovers on Mars, and built yachts that sail faster than the wind, that we can’t have a dishwasher that instead of issuing cryptic “F4” code, actually tells us what F4 means. My first guess was: The F word, four times.

Turns out, it’s not that simple. Why not? Even the robot in Lost in Space managed to tell Will Robinson more useful information. Pretty clever considering it was the sixties.

Why can’t the dishwasher flash up a sign that says “my filter is blocked” or “temperature sensor has malfunctioned” or “pending ash cloud eruption” or “your demented aunt has put the cat in the dishwasher and the washing in the dog kennel and the dishes are currently spinning in a zillion pieces of broken crockery in the spin dryer.”

Self diagnosis

You’d think, with all the technology at our fingertips, that the dishwasher would self-diagnose, or better, automatically email the service repair chap, who could whip out and fix it.

Imagine if the Mars rover decided to stop working, and phoned home: “F4”.

Come on, F&P, you can do better.

Still, it’s not really a reason to be unhappy. There are a lot of people in the world worse off than us, with an F4 fault error. My heart goes out to those with an F5.

Some of our Olympians suffered F5 or worse this week. Some even managed an F-Up. Spare a thought for poor Valerie Adams, who is so miserable at having achieved ONLY a silver medal at the Olympics.

She’d probably be quite content at home with a F4 faulty dishwasher. Same for Ben Fouhy, who has the weight of the world upon his well-toned shoulders after bombing out of the Olympics - and it’s all someone else’s fault. Mind you, there wasn’t much wrong with Fouhy’s waste disposal unit. It was running at full tit during his ignominious exit.

Or, picture this: we could be sitting under an ash cloud somewhere in the central plateau, while a certain volcano is having its own little F4 tantrum.

The point here is, if I have to see one more blubbering sportsperson, upset that they ‘only got a silver’, I will throw myself into the friggin volcano.

Curiosity

Meanwhile, one appliance hasn’t yet suffered an F4 error. The world watched in trepidation as the Mars lander, Curiosity, touched down on the red planet.

There were immediate signs of life but it is likely NASA has photoshopped it all out. The digital era has saved the space

agency millions of dollars, because they no longer need to act out bogus planet landing scenes, like they did in the sixties.

Now it can all be done on computer.

Everyone is asking whether life has been found on Mars. Well there was, till the spaceship landed.

RR unreliable sources report the landing craft on its descent squashed a small furry feline-like creature. Officials will not confirm reports that Curiosity killed the cat.

Oops, the end of life on Mars.

Nor would the officials give any hint as to whether the origins of Man have been discovered on Mars, although they did concede that it’s still highly probable that Women came from Venus.

Meanwhile, here at RR Space Craft Tracking Headquarters, we are concerned that the rover is mucking around on the surface, playing with rock samples and searching for possible life forms. We all know that is not the role of an intelligent life form sent to another planet.

The Mars lander should have aimed for the nearest maize paddock, flattened the crops into mysterious circles, then snuck off. Isn’t that what we expect alien spacecraft to do?

Modern news

Finally, there’s been a strong response to the iPad deal with Harvey Norman and SunLive.

Parting shot

Speaking of iPads, here’s a parting shot at technology, thanks again to Wally: I was visiting my son and daughterin-law last night when I asked if I could borrow a newspaper. He responded: “This is the 21st century, old man, we don’t waste money on newspapers any more. Here, you can borrow my iPad.” I can tell you, that bloody fly never knew what hit it.

Alison says final decisions have not been made on the proposed model or how funding will be allocated – but they were listening to feedback to its proposed model.

Lynda says the service gets many calls for help on employment issues and advising clients on family law matters, but provides help across most areas of civil law, administrative law and criminal law. It provides help for those on low incomes who cannot afford legal support.

She says a recent case highlighting the importance of accessible legal information was highlighted by a woman who had bought a car without a car history check. The $3000 car is now being repossessed by a bank after the previous owner defaulted on a loan. The bank had security over the car for the loan – something that a history check would have shown.

Lynda is encouraging people concerned about the restructuring to use the service to demonstrate the need for it and also suggests people contact their MPs. In the 12 months to July the service helped 5271 individuals and not for profit organisations with free legal help – with Ministry of Justice funding of $439,982.

Growing smart start-ups Talk to Sheldon Nesdale for a few minutes about the potential for business in Tauranga and he will take you away with his infectious enthusiasm.

But rather than just talking about the area’s potential Sheldon, who runs his own marketing con-

sultancy, is doing something to help.

Inspired by his experience at Startup Weekend in Auckland last year, he is bringing the weekend-long business building workshop to Tauranga, September 14-16.

The event is part of the non-profit global Startup Weekend movement that has helped create many great businesses at the 54-hour-long weekend startup marathons that have been held in more than 100 cities.

The event has a strong focus on developing iPad or iPhone apps due to the fast turnaround speed from concept to completed product – but Sheldon is happy to hear all ideas.

Beginning with people pitching their business proposals, teams form around ideas they like then race to build the app or business during the weekend.

At the end of the weekend all teams get feedback, with the winning team getting ongoing support.

Sheldon says with 25 per cent of all startups continuing on after the weekend across the globe, the event offers the chance to foster more business and encourage innovation in the region.

Among those supporting the weekend is Tauranga-based angel investment fund Enterprise Angels, which has invested $4 million in startup businesses in the past six months.

A reusable cup offering the perfect solution for the age-old challenge of keeping your coffee hot, and an asthma inhaler that tells you when it is about to run out, earned student developers top awards.

Tauranga Girls’ College Year 11 student Melanie Duff, who got the senior student’s supreme award for her self-heated cup, was inspired to develop the special cup after finding her chai latte go cold too quickly.

Looking for a self-heating system that could be applied to hot drinks, Melanie, 15, came across gel hand-warmers that trampers often use.

Through lateral thinking and adaptation she has designed a cup holder that heats up at the flick of a switch.

“I was thinking about cup holders and heated ‘shoes’ and I thought ‘why don’t I combine the ideas?’.”

The cup is warmed by heat released when the salt solution within the cup’s walls crystallises, then by washing it in cold water it is reset to be ready to reheat again when you want it to. The crystallisation heating process is activated at the flick of a switch.

Melanie, who plans to develop a career that combines her joint interests in science and design, says the win was a complete surprise after seeing the high standard of entries. She would like to develop the idea into an actual product.

Mount Maunganui College Year 10 student Aidan Winch, 14, won the junior supreme award category for his asthma inhaler that records use on a memory card.

The judges described it as a “very clever and simple solution” to the problem of not knowing how much medicine is left in an inhaler.

College vice principal Michelle Ballard says the competition is a great way to encourage innovation, creativity and lateral thinking among the students.

The awards, which have just been held for the third time, are organised by Priority One’s Instep programme, Locus Research and Woods Creative, to foster innovation among secondary students.

Salute to silver sailors Tauranga sailor Peter Burling and Blair Tuke received New Zealand’s 100th Olympic medal on Wednesday night from Barbara Kendall, who won gold at Barcelona in 1992 for windsurfing. She presented Peter and Blair’s medals at Weymouth as she’s now a member of the International Olympic Committee.

The 49er sailors secured their medal mid-week, but had to sail out the medal race to officially take second behind the Australian crew.

Peter and Blair finished second in the medal race. Gold medallists Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen of Australia were fourth, while Denmark claimed the bronze medal by finishing third.

Burling and Tuke’s medal is New Zealand’s 19th Olympic silver to go with 40 golds and 41 bronzes.

Peter says it’s nice to have a tan-

gible reward for four years of hard work, and he again paid tribute to the pair’s training partners, Outteridge and Jensen, for helping to lift their standard above the rest of the world.

Tauranga Boys’ College principal Robert Mangan is not surprised by Peter Burling’s success, saying the former school sports captain was an outstanding student – balancing sporting excellence with academic success.

“He was outstanding as a young man - to go to the (Beijing) Olympics aged 17 is an outstanding achievement and suggested there was probably more to come.”

Robert described Peter, who became the youngest sailor to represent New Zealand at the Olympics in 2008, as a “fine young man”. Peter captained the college sailing team which won

the national secondary sailing championships in 2007 and 2008.

The team, which included fellow Tauranga Olympic sailor Jason Saunders, also won the transTasman Inter-Dominion secondary schools team sailing championships in 2008.

Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club manager Christine Headey says members were very excited about Peter’s success and had their fingers crossed for a bronze for fellow member Jason Saunders.

Christine expects some members to celebrate the sailors’ successes on Friday with a replay of races at the club, but says the club will wait for the sailors to return for a major celebration. Peter began sailing at the club in Optimists at seven, while Jason started racing when he was eight-years-old.

Skype aiding children’s move

Facebook may be off-limits for the children at ABC Tauranga Central – but Skyping is a different story.

The video messenger programme is being used by the local preschool to support their children’s transition from early childhood education to primary school.

Centre manager Pip McNeil says the idea came from the early childhood curriculum, which suggests if children experience an environment where connecting links to the wider world are affirmed and extended, they would feel more comfortable.

Pip thought Skyping from the students’ new school back to their classmates at preschool would provide such links.

She approached Tauranga Primary School newentrant teacher Robyn Caley, who got on board

immediately, and five-year-old James Cavit became the preschool’s first student to test out the theory.

During the first few weeks of primary school James, with the help of his mum or teacher, Skyped the preschool and talked to his friends about his new life.

“He was a little bit shy, but all the children got to see James’s new school by going on a Skype tour using iPads,” says Pip. “James talked to us and showed us what he had been doing on his school visit.”

As well as repeatedly chatting about being ‘on the telly’, Pip says James gradually became much less shy and began suggesting his old classmates come and visit his new school.

She believes the experiment was a success and hopes to continue with the innovation. She is currently looking to develop relationships with other schools.

Teen admits mobile classroom arson An Aongatete teenager has admitted to setting fire to the $225,000 Life Education Trust trailer at Brookfield Primary School.

Zachary Fitzpatrick, 17, appeared in the Tauranga District Court this week where he pleaded guilty to the charges of arson and burglary in relation to the blaze that destroyed the trailer on June 13.

During his appearance in court today, Judge Paul Geoghegan convicted Zachary on the charges and remanded him on bail.

The Life Education Trust trailer was parked on the sports courts of Brookfield Primary School when it was burgled and set alight on the night of June 12.

Bomb squad removes WWII grenade from Tauranga home

Tongariro eruption

A section of Harvey Street in Tauranga city was cordoned off and residents were evacuated after a World War Two grenade was discovered under the floorboards of a house.

The elite Aucklandbased bomb squad were called to Tauranga to investigate the grenade found in a Harvey Street home at about 2pm.

The grenade was found under the floorboards by a builder.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and police evacuated residents from homes within a 1800m radius of the discovery at number 44 Harvey Street.

Photos of the WWII grenade fragment were sent to the Auckland based bomb squad who then rushed to Tauranga to investigate.

They arrived at 5.30pm and inspected the grenade which had no pin, detonator or lever.

Bay of Plenty was issued with an ash warning this week when Mount Tongariro erupted for the first time in 100 years.

The volcano’s Te Maari craters, dormant for more than a century, burst into action around midnight on Monday evening throwing ash and red hot rocks skyward.

In 2009, the trio won the Pettman/ROSL ARTS International Scholarship which took them for a triumphant tour of the United Kingdom.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council supports a research programme on the Tauranga Harbour.

Recently, the council provided financial support for a PhD study on the effects of black swan grazing and contaminants on the health and growth of seagrass meadows in Tauranga Harbour.

Seagrass meadows play an important role in the productivity of harbour ecosystems and coastal fisheries. Previous studies to map vegetation in Tauranga Harbour had shown significant reductions in the extent of seagrass between 1959 and 1996.

Unsurprisingly, loss of seagrass beds shows a strong spatial relationship to catchment run-off. However, the PhD study showed that black swan grazing created circular de-vegetated patches in seagrass meadows. At the most heavily grazed site, annual seagrass loss was estimated to be around 20 per cent.

The recovery of seagrass in these heavily grazed areas was estimated to take three or more years.

Something good It’s a worrying time for people affected or potentially affected by Mt Tongariro.

Ditto here in the Bay with White Island and no doubt from time to time in Auckland which sits atop 50 volcanoes. All reminders that Mother Nature can be both fickle and fierce.

Local government is charged with Civil Defence responsibilities and here in the Bay we have a capable and competent Bay-wide organisation that we see in action with flood and other hazard events. It runs mostly under the radar but demonstrates its capability when the need arises.

It is an example of a local government planning and service delivery operation that works well. Lessons could be learned from this as local government itself prepares for a good old shake up.

12 It’s easy to understand why some of you out there in ratepayer land sometimes get exasperated at the way councils operate.

You know, illogical, irrational, inflexible, overbearing, authoritarian to name a few feelings you may have had.

Well, this week it happened to council itself as a result of Central Government and the Local Government Act (LGA).

Councils are prescribed by this Act as to what they can and cannot do – in fact over 90% of what councils do is what the Government tells them to do and

sometimes when to do it and also how to do it. So the LGA turns the seemingly simple job of appointing a new CEO into a technical legal nightmare. Every step of the process has to be ‘transparent’, ‘accountable’ and is challengable, if there is such a word. Back in the bad old days a council CEO virtually had a job for life and the old boy network ensured many an unsuitable officer job security.

Council gets frustrated too!

So when the LGA was introduced in 1989 parliament prescribed that a CEO appointment could only be for five years and then it had to be re-advertised. The ‘best’ applicant must be appointed and other unsuccessful applicants could challenge the appointment on points of process.

Enter the employment consultants to manage the process as an independent agency to oversee the applications, applicants, interviews and advise council on procedure. This costs bucket loads of ratepayer dollars but is cheaper than a challenge.

Back to this week’s fiasco. The extraordinary council meeting required by the LGA to formally appoint interim CEO Leigh Auton was called with Leigh’s name inadvertently on the facing sheet – the cover of the agenda, when it should have been Christine Jones name as acting CEO. This meant that had the meeting gone ahead Leigh’s authority as CEO could have faced challenge for all the day to day actions he performs – documents, payments, contracts etc. With Leigh’s interim appointment we have no time to go through the expensive, and in my opinion, time wasting process which could take six months.

We had nine months or so gap last time. So Leigh should have been officially appointed by the time you read this and already at the reins.

Business summit

Some of us attended Priority One’s business summit called Shaping Our Future. Its function is to provide an overview of business in the Bay, its achievements, challenges and a way forward. It was surprisingly well attended with a lot of Tauranga’s leading business people there. One problem business faces is well known - the economic downturn - but there are others. PSA for kiwifruit and NZ businesses cutting each other’s throats thanks to competitive situations and not talking to each other are other blocks businesses place in each other’s way. Solutions are a difficulty business has in common. Selling Tauranga’s lifestyle/work balance is seen as a major asset.

More attractive

A small marketing team making targeted forays to national and international business encouraging shifts to the Bay was one suggestion. Certainly there is no silver bullet to picking up the local economy. Quality not quantity is what a utopian solution might provide.

Certainly the port, our roading network, our beautiful harbour, beaches, climate and lifestyle must make the area desirable for business.

The tertiary initiative with a proposed new university will make the city more attractive, we were told.

At least getting all these people together provided an opportunity to take a step back and perhaps a step sideways around real and perceived problems.

Rena saga confidentiality

On another front I see that the ongoing Rena saga has gone to ground. New salvors aren’t telling anything due to a ‘confidentiality’ agreement. Rubbish! We have

an absolute right to know what’s going on, how and when. Just like the LGA demands of councils. My suspicion is that this mess will get left underwater on Astrolabe reef out of sight and out of mind. I understand that council’s “investment” in the clean-up has yet to be reimbursed.

Having worked for an insurance company many years ago I know that when delays in payments occur it can be an indication that bad news is on the way. All three councils acted in good faith on requests from Maritime NZ on behalf of Government and reimbursement should be forthcoming from them.

Remember it has nothing to do with anyone in NZ that a 47,000 tonne ship sailed with full navigation gear by a professional crew drove into the centre of a well charted reef in calm weather at over 17 knots and sank.

Alcohol policy

At Joint Governance Committee – where TCC and WBOPDC meet to discuss joint issues, it was agreed we would formulate a joint local alcohol policy to address the Alcohol Reform Bill before parliament.

What a stunning initiative – it will stop the need for each council to submit to each other’s proposal. We should have been doing this years ago. So with a great head of steam we’re recommending to our respective council’s a joint task force that could see common policies on dogs, prostitution, gambling, planning and building. Enlarging on the success of BOPLASS (the Shared Service Company), which produces savings with bulk buying on behalf of some eight or so surrounding councils.

These sorts of initiatives produce real economies rather than those promised, but rarely realised, savings of council amalgamations.

An update of a reserve management plan for Huharua Park at Plummers Point, Te Puna will be going out for consultation. Like McLaren Falls Park this is a real jewel for the Bay and you should make a visit if you haven’t seen it.

Angels for enterprise The call is going out for ambitious Western Bay business owners and entrepreneurs to step up.

From the $4 million invested in businesses during the first six months this year by Tauranga-based investment fund Enterprise Angels, only $500,000 has gone to Western Bay of Plenty businesses.

For an investment fund set up to support emerging Bay of Plenty businesses, Enterprise Angels has had a slow start – but executive director Bill Murphy is confident interest from local start-up businesses will soon grow.

“I think it is just a matter of time. These things (angel investing) are new and a lot of people still don’t realise the funding is available.”

Bill says the small portion of funds invested locally was a reflection of the low enquiry they had had, and urges any local business people or entrepreneurs with big ambitions to contact them.

“We really want these people who have high aspirations for their businesses to step forward.”

Along with providing funding and helping companies become investment-ready, he says the fund, which has more than $12m still available for investing, can help businesses with brainstorming and strategy development.

Bill says the fund has always been involved in busi-

ness incubator-type services for clients, but would soon formalise the structure of these services.

He wants to hear from businesses to ensure the support offered matched business owners’ requirements.

The incubator system will have a strong focus on fostering the Western Bay’s areas of expertise, including horticulture and food processing at Te Puna’s Newnham Park, manuka honey, marine biodiscovery and titanium power metallurgy – but may also support other sectors.

In the past six months the fund has invested in Te Puna-based Reunion Foods Co (Heilala Vanilla), along with Havelock North Fruit Co – which is marketing the specialty mini apple Rockit, while Wellington mobile app technology company SmartShow was funded for its QR code system that allows trade show visitors to scan a code for exhibitor information they want (instead of taking brochures).

Nature the best teacher for our children With all the talk on the pros and cons of iPads for preschoolers, it begs the question, ‘What did we have the most fun doing when we were young?’

I remember playing outside with my brothers and friends. The great outdoors was our oyster. We had the ability to run free, explore the bush, collect blackberries for jam, look for frogs and tadpoles in the creeks, make rope swings on fallen logs, slide down the banks and go home at the end of the

day pretty damn dirty and happy.

The quiet time children spend in front of an iPad has been likened to TV time. When I was young, TV time was restricted to after dinner, when it was too dark to go outside and play. It was outside where we got our daily dose of vitamin D, built strong bones and muscles, learned to share, chat and work with our friends building our mud slides, rope swings, carts and berry collecting.

Without realising it, we were learning all the time. How to make forts that would withstand the wind. Figuring out which

way the fort opening should face to keep us sheltered from the elements and hidden from the enemy. Climbing trees and working out which branches would hold our weight and learning the sore way which ones would not.

Feeling the breeze on our face.

Watching leaves fall and using them for soft landings. All these experiences nature dishes out for free. Artificial, virtual and indoor settings just cannot compete with a good natural environment.

We would spend hours and hours exploring, building, chatting, laughing, climbing, running, sliding, swinging. Looking back we had high levels of resilience and could sustain focus and concentration for long periods to complete our chosen activities.

We loved being creative, using

our imagination to tell stories, explore and discover new things in the bush.

Outside is where preschool children learn best when the sun is up and inside activities can be enjoyed when the sun goes down.

All aboard the Spirit in Tauranga Western Bay of Plenty residents are being offered the chance to board the Spirit of New Zealand in Tauranga at the end of the month.

Hyundai New Zealand, the sponsor of the Spirit of Adventure Trust, is inviting visitors aboard the yacht with friends and colleagues for drinks, nibbles and a sail around the harbour from 12.45-4pm on August 28.

The Spirit of New Zealand started in the 1960s and has since given more than 75,000 young Kiwis the chance to grow and develop beneath its sails.

Move it Month: Dreaming of gymnastics While the Olympic Games have filled our screens over the past fortnight, many of us have been inspired watching these exceptional athletes strive for their dream of a medal.

For Sport BOP recreation adviser Nicki Scott, watching the gymnastics is a personal favourite and she knows many others will now want to have a go at the sport themselves.

“I am sure many have been inspired by watching these amazing athletes competing in one of the most fascinating and entertaining sports at the games. Why not give it a go with Play in the Bay?” Sport BOP’s sports promotion event is having Move it Month in August, with a range of introductory activity classes on offer suitable for all ages, abilities and interests – including gymnastics.

“The idea is you can have a go at a range of different

activities so you can find something you really enjoy.”

Next week Gymnastics at ARGOS is offering beginner classes – with an adults’ class on Tuesday night (for those 18+) which is ideal for those who have dreamed of becoming a gymnast.

On Friday morning the under-2s can have a go at the gym with the Nappy Nastics movement class.

Along with gymnastics other activities on offer this week include ballroom and Latin dancing, hot hula, musical theatre, petanque and pilates.

Living in a Bay of Plenty for paddlers This weekend, clubs will head to the Tauranga Yacht Club Reserve to participate in a multi-code paddling series, Kotahi ki te hoe.

Paddlers representing waka ama, stand up paddling, surf lifesaving and individual flat water will be on show.

A key focus of the event is participation, with clubs battling it out against each other by entering as many paddlers as they can across paddle divisions.

There is the six-man waka, single waka, ski and stand up paddle races, as well as a fun relay on the stand up paddleboards.

“The club participation prize seemed like the best way for clubs from all codes to compete against each other fairly,” says race organiser Rebecca Boyce.

“Having participated in many sporting codes, I liked the idea of having a

multi-code paddling event.”

She says the Kotahi ki te hoe series offers something for everyone.

“Whether it’s your first time on a stand up paddle board or you’re an experienced downwind racer, there is an event for you.”

With novice races for waka ama crews to distances for the more experienced, there will be plenty of laughs and competition to suit.

Designs on fashion career Sewing machines around the Western Bay are having a final workout today as final adjustments are made by students ahead of Saturday’s Global Connexions textile design competition.

Event coordinator and Tauranga Girls’ College teacher in charge of textile and design, Stephanie O’Sullivan, expects many of the 200 secondary students competing to be tweaking their designs up to the last minute to help achieve their

high standards. “Every year it’s been going the standard has increased year on year. Every year they want to make and design that little bit better.”

Stephanie says the original design competition, which has categories from traditional textile crafts through to high end fashions for Year 7-13 students, has helped students develop their craft.

“Over the years the standard of workmanship and originality has gone from strength to strength and students have achieved amazing results. Some have gone on to pursue their passion at fashion school and are now working in the industry.”

Knowledge is power when choosing your best career path Thanks to Western Bay at Work 2012 there is a host of enlightening courses and events on at the moment to really help people choose the best career path.

Next Thursday from 12noon to 2pm Bay of Plenty Polytechnic hosts Public Campus Tours at Windermere. Aimed at ages 15 and up, these tours give people a firsthand view of the polytechnic in action, allowing them to visit workshops and facilities and learn about the varied programmes and degree options available.

Meanwhile for those interested in a career in medicine, nursing or midwifery, there are two specific sessions. Next Thursday, August 16, there’s a Health

Careers Discovery Session on medicine and the following Thursday, August 21, the focus is on nursing and midwifery. Both are at the BOP Clinical School on Cameron Road from 4-5pm.

BAY LEARNING ACADEMY A new centre for your Learning needs

When this happens, driving can be scary and unpleasant.

Age Concern’s fun and interactive driving course is designed to build confidence and update knowledge so older drivers can stay safe on the roads.

A number of topics are addressed in the social, pressure-free course, including new road rules, intersection rules, roundabouts, car care and maintenance, and rural and urban driving.

Course coordinator Jim Wilson says the course ensures participants are keeping their driving skills up-to-date and are aware of any changes to the

Road Code. Jim also says if anyone is nervous about attending on their own, they can bring a friend for support, just mention it when registering for the course.

Secondary issues such as weather conditions, eyesight and hearing checks, and how to use passing lanes are taught, as well as the effects of medications on driving.

This free, theory-based course is also perfect for people new to New Zealand who don’t yet feel comfortable with our way of driving. This course runs from 9.20am to 1.30pm.

An introduction to digital story-telling Each year The University of Waikato’s Centre for Continuing Education in Tauranga holds a wonderful screen and media workshop entitled An Introduction to Digital Story-telling.

The workshop, which is strictly limited to eight participants, is presented by two Hamilton-based tutors, Elaine Bliss and Sasha McLaren. These tutors are passionate about what they teach, and consequently digital story-telling is gaining in national popularity.

The course attracts a diverse array of people, all wanting to convey their own uniquely personal story, says Nyree Sherlock from The University of Waikato. For

example, one participant created a digital story in honour of a beloved parent; another chose to convey a delightful love story that challenged the odds; another chose to convey an emotional journey: his reaction when first encountering the magnificent Tāne Mahuta.

“I was privileged to view these stories on completion, and was surprised to find that each one was powerfully moving; with the guidance of Elaine and Sasha, the eight participants had created their own multimedia stories and the result was utterly stunning.

“I would highly recommend this course to anyone wishing to tell a personal story, recount memoirs, or convey a tale about a loved one.

Fresh faces for Freshmoves Golden Sands and Papamoa College are the latest schools to put their hands up to be a part of the Bay of Plenty Freshmoves Dance Festival at Baycourt on August 15.

The festival is the 11th organised by BOP Dance – a group established to support and encourage the teaching of contemporary dance in the Bay’s primary and intermediate schools.

Each school team is to create a 5-7 minute dance based on the theme ‘flipside’. It will be non-competitive, but awards will be given for excellence in the various dance elements.

Omanu, Pongakawa, Paroa, Golden Sands, Te Akau Ki primary schools and Papamoa College will perform from 7pm on August 15, followed by Te Puke Primary, St Thomas More, Arataki, Omokoroa Point, Greenpark and Te Puke Intermediate the next night.

Quick-fix weight loss programmes – how good are they for you?

How many times have we seen weight loss diets/systems that promise instant results?

Lose five kilograms in two weeks or become a slimmer and sexier you in only four weeks. The promises go on and on.

But the reality of weight loss is it takes a long time to put on the weight and so will take a while to remove and, if done in a healthy and sustainable fashion, takes dedication to lifestyle changes.

One size does not fit all. It is impossible for generic weight loss programmes to work for the whole population.

Body size, age, muscle mass, physical activity and many more factors dictate your calorie requirements to maintain your basic body requirements.

A 170cm tall active 20 year old needs more energy and nutrients that a sedentary 165cm tall 35 year old.

Yet many of the ‘quick fix’ diets do not take this into consideration.

Finding the optimum energy requirement that sustains body function and allows for weight loss is an essential step in the process of selecting the correct nutrient type and volume.

Other factors to consider are health issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, poly cystic ovary syndrome, Graves disease, gout, diabetes, the list goes on and on.

Eating a nutrition-deficient diet for any length of time can be very detrimental to your health. One

example of this is a diet low in calcium.

Robbing your bone bank of calcium to run your body functions can lead to early onset of osteoporosis.

Returning to healthy living after a nutrientdeficient diet can help to some extent, but the damage done may not return you to potential health, nor can you turn back the aging process that deficiencies may have speeded up.

What may have started out as a cheap fix desire for weight loss can, in the long run, be very expensive.

Health is not something one should take for granted.

Concentrating on lifestyle changes such as healthy food options, increased physical activity, stress reduction and clean living all contribute to a reduction in fat loss and body size.

We all have a level of background inflammation.

Your doctor can arrange a high sensitivity C reactive protein (hs-CRP) blood test to check your levels.

According to Paul Ridker a CRP reading of over 3 puts you at a high risk of cardiovascular disease.

A reading between 1 and 3 indicates a moderate risk and a level of below 1 a low risk.

Fortunately this type of low grade silent inflammation can be readily influenced by changing nutrient intakes.

Next time you are having your cholesterol tested, ask for a hsCRP test.

If this is over 2, you should get advice and create an anti-inflammatory diet and supplement action to help you to live a full life free from circulatory disease.

Friday despite the weather being terrible, and the sea pretty rough, they went on an overnighter to Mayor.

At the Mayor Knolls hapuku species fishing they did alright on bluenose – four anglers got their bluenose limit.

The odd hapuku was also landed.

Closer in towards Mayor they got some nice snapper and crayfish.

There were no other boats round Mayor.

Beach fishing - our regular veteran kontiki fisher last week was again fishing at Papamoa Beach, where he faced the extra difficulties of bad weather, kontiki hooks getting clogged up with grassy weed, and the kontiki being forced westward and back into the beach by very

strong currents just off shore.

Nevertheless he had three successful beach visits.

Last Tuesday in two sets he landed three snapper, including one of around 4kg.

Thursday in another two sets he brought in two snapper.

Friday was the best day, and in two sets he brought in two snapper, three gurnard, and four kahawai.

Each day he had the beach to himself.

Quick chocolate and walnut fix As the chef of No. 1 The Strand, which specialises in functions (predominantly the popular “rolling abundance” selection) I find myself constantly changing and adapting dishes.

When people book No. 1 for a birthday celebration or work do, they get the full kahuna, which includes a cold selection, hot selection and dessert choices for less than you would pay for a high-end main course elsewhere.

One of the desserts I have

adapted and which proves the most popular is the chocolate brownie.

This recipe is adapted from an old café original brownie recipe and with the addition of walnuts.

Walnuts are in plentiful supply right now and have fantastic health giving properties. Also, chocolate is good for you! Yes,

regular small amounts of dark chocolate can help reduce heart disease. On the other hand however, excessive consumption can lead to obesity without a corresponding increase in activity. So with the addition of sweetened condensed milk, butter, cocoa and dark chocolate, after a few slices at one of our functions, you had better dance your butt off!

Walnut chocolate fudge brownie Serves 8-10

Ingredients 200g dark chocolate 250g butter 1.5 cups sugar ½ cup hot water 1 espresso cup coffee A splash of rum 3 eggs ½ cup cocoa powder 1 ½ cups self raising flour ½ cup chopped walnuts 4-5 tablespoon sweetened condensed milk Method In a microwave melt together the butter, half the sugar, the chocolate, then add the rum, coffee and water and allow to cool.

Meanwhile, beat the eggs and remaining sugar together until pale and thick, fold in the sifted flour and cocoa then the chocolate mixture. Add a little hot water if the mixture is too thick.

Pour into a 26cm cake tin or tray. The mixture can then be sprinkled with walnuts. If they sink immediately, the mix is too thin, as they should stay near the top of the cake. Bake in the middle of the oven set to 180 degrees Celsius for about five minutes. A crust should have started to form on the top. Carefully drizzle condensed milk over the surface in a crisscross pattern.

Sprinkle with more walnuts to compensate for any that have may have sunk and return to the oven for around 40-50 minutes.

Check cake with a skewer but take care not to overcook. You are not wanting a completely dry skewer, as you are aiming for a gooey centre. Remember that your cake will keep cooking for some time once removed from the oven. Timing is the secret and depends on your oven and how thick you mixture is. Allow the cake to cool completely before cutting. This allows time for the chocolate to set.

This cake will keep well for few days and transform itself from a dry looking cake to a great chocolate walnut fixation after a few seconds in the microwave.

A group of Otumoetai College students are the brains behind Tomoli – a Kiwi blend of tomato sauce and aioli – capturing the attention of food franchises around the North Island.

Callum Hughes, Bradley Fulcher, Georgina Read, Cohen Nicholls and Ethan Cooke are currently in cahoots with store owners to get Tomoli into New World Mount Maunganui, Brookfield and Gate Pa, as well as franchises in Auckland and Rotorua.

They even have their sights set on a burger chain in the United States.

“It has the potential to be quite big,” says marketing and finance director Bradley.

“We knew, with anything, if you put the hard work and effort in, it can make it as big as anything.”

The idea came from group member Ethan, who randomly decided to mix tomato sauce and aioli to eat with his chicken nuggets.

“It tasted really

nice – we thought we would give it a go,” says Bradley.

While originally a school project through the Young Enterprises Scheme, the group use their own money and are clocking up many outside hours.

“It’s very time consuming; it can take up all weekend.”

Tomoli is manufactured by a sauce specialist in Mount Maunganui to ensure proper safety standards are met.

“Food is really complicated for this kind of thing – but it’s always an industry that’s going to sell a lot.”

Bradley says they have had great feedback form people, including Simon Bridges and cast members from The GC, who say Tomoli is delicious and unlike anything they have tasted before.

What’s next for Tomoli? According to Bradley it’s conversations with Dave Dobbyn’s agent, Tana Umaga’s trainer and Rocky Horror Show creator Richard O’Brien. “He’s expressed a lot of interest in trying to help us out – which would open up heaps of doors.”

Tomoli is now available for purchase from the group’s Facebook page for $4.95 per bottle and a Trade Fair day will take place on Saturday, September 8 at Palm Beach Plaza.

Arrested lifestyle development in the Western Bay

Plans to designate areas for lifestyle development around Katikati and Te Puke have been put on hold until Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s next set of plan changes.

Council’s strategy and policy committee discussed the zoning

at its meeting on August 2 but moved to delay work on defining the zoning in the interim.

Council’s resource management manager Phillip Martelli said as well as defining the zones, consideration needed to be given to the need for additional roading.

Kaimai ward councillor Margaret Murray-Benge said Katikati was a growth area and she would not like to see the zoning delayed for too long.

Committee chairman and Katikati ward councillor Mike Williams agreed the plans should

not be shelved for too long but it was important to get them right.

The intention is to zone specific area where smaller lifestyle blocks can be subdivided and developed.

Vintage and retro for hospice It’s in with the old and out with the new at Waipuna Hospice with the launch of a designated vintage and retro section this weekend.

An assortment of classic collectables including 70s style cup and saucers, milk crates and radio transistors will be for sale at the second hand shop at 271 Fraser Street.

Waipuna Hospice Fraser Cove store manager Olwyn Sorrenson noticed a recent interest in collectables and has introduced the retro section that will continue to be an ongoing area at the hospice shop.

Olwyn says people are realising the value of vintage and in support of the hospice’s retro section, there has been a donation of a very eclectic range of items that are all for sale.

Among other homewares, clothing and sports gear that are currently for sale at the hospice store, Olwyn’s best-

kept secrets will be revealed throughout the weekend, including an old favourite.

“I’ve even got a 1923 Edmonds cookery book.”

Evolving environment for builders Our residential build environment has seen much change recently.

Up until five years ago we did not see a lot of change that effected onsite practices. What did change was over a period of time, was in black and white and so practitioners had time to absorb and align building methods to suit. What we are seeing in more recent times is rapid change, both from a regulatory and site application.

Change is constant

We are now playing catch-up on some poor performances both codes, site and business practices.

Compared to other advanced countries, New Zealand has been lacking for some time, combined with the findings and reports out of the leaky building review. The culmination of these has led to licensing and amendments to the Building Act, among other changes.

Site supervision

Licensing is now bedding in and the detail is being thrashed out. It is a starting point and the ministry is already looking at how we can lift the bar now that the numbers have been captured. This lifting of the bar begs the question of the role of the site licences,

which fulfil the issue of managing the interface between the trades. This lack of supervision between trades was identified in the Hunn Report (assessment of the leaky building problem) as being a major failing on our building sites in New Zealand.

Future direction

Currently there are some changes the ministry is looking at that will affect building businesses as we know it today. Again these changes have been brought about by the poor performers of our industry. They include mandatory use of contracts for projects over a certain build value, and disclosure statements that allow the homeowner to make informed choices. Poor performing practitioners will now be more transparent in their failings. Other changes include disclosure of whether a guarantee or surety can be offered during and after construction.

The question to ask here is who is underwriting the guarantee, as we are seeing many self-written promises on the market.

Henrikson, says police became aware of the thefts of couplings from fire service inlets after firefighters attended a call-out to a fire at a Hamilton central city shopping complex recently.

“They arrived to find important fire system fittings had been removed.

“Our staff are working with colleagues in these districts as we seek to identify any links to the thefts.

“At the same time police in each area are carrying out checks with scrap metal dealers, educating them what to look out for and seeking information on any likely persons of interest.”

She says already there have been reports of thieves operating in broad daylight, disguised as workmen going about their lawful business.

“In one case three men were described as wearing overalls and hi-vis vests in and around where the fittings were stolen from.”

Police are asking people with information about the thefts to come forward and contact their local police station.

Alternatively, people can leave information anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.

The night owls of Mount Maunganui spend hours of darkness wide awake in order to reduce crime and make the community feel safer, patrolling the local area between 9.30pm -2am.

Mount Maunganui community patrol group chairman, George Pocock, says the Terios will be manned by two patrol volunteers at all times.

He says once upon a time the volunteers’ personal vehicles were used as patrol cars and with the old Corolla becoming ‘a bit small’, the donated wagon is appreciated.

“It means we won’t have to walk,” says George.

He says the patrol car covers about 60-70 kilometres each shift.

On September 1 the community patrol group will hold a safety screw event in Bunning’s Warehouse carpark from 9am.

The group will fit safety screws to number plates on people’s cars to prevent the plates being stolen.

A sausage sizzle will also be provided.

Racist activists Genie out of bottle Born-again Maori and greed force gap wider Peter Dey, Weekend Sun 3 August, states that “The descendants of those original Maori landowners are with us now. They deserve compensation for the inheritance they have lost”. He then continues “ To describe Maori descendants as watered down is meaningless. Nobody complains when watered down Pakeha descendants inherit a family farm”.

The big difference between these two types of claim is massive. On the one hand claims are based either on customary rights and/or word of mouth passed down from generation to generation, but there is no unassailable tangible proof of ownership to back them up.

On the other hand, claims on a family farm are fully backed up by tangible proof in the form of recognised legal documentation.

I believe however that some of the claims under the Waitangi Tribunal are fully justified and need to be recognised.

Unfortunately there are racist activists in NZ who are forcing the gap to be opened wider between Maori and the rest of us. When the original Treaty was signed in 1840 it was for all inhabitants of NZ and not for one minority group.

No group is special “Water, water everywhere but not a drop (for nonMaori) to drink”. Article IV of the Treaty is born.

Non-Maori should pay attention. The Maori Council’s claim for ownership of water is not about long showers for Maori while the rest of the populace endures a dry rinse. Rather, it is a dangerous end-game being played out by a near-irrelevant group seeking to control an ingredient essential to the sustaining of life itself - fresh water. This most Disney-esque of Treaty claims to date is likely to find favour with the Waitangi Tribunal, a doting body not nervous about sidelining fact to accommodate fiction (calling the Taniwha as a witness will probably get the claim over the line).

That we are even having a discussion about ownership of water is quite astonishing. Water does not discriminate.

No ethnic group is “special” in the eyes of a passing rain shower or pothole puddle. The Maori Council should stop angling for phantom fish and pull its line in. There is nothing down there. Just water - everybodys’ water.

True facts of history It is high time Peter Dey removed his rose-tinted glasses and faced up to the true facts about the history of the Treaty of Waitangi and the circumstances which brought it into being. Dey ought to read “The Corruption of NZ Democracy” by John Robinson which provides extensive evidence to disprove the orthodox view that colonisation decimated Maori.

Robinson shows that Maori killed Maori by the tens of thousands between 1800 and 1842 causing a populaltion decline from a projected 120,000 to 70,000 in 1840. He also shows that the Maori population gradually recovered as colonisation ended war, slavery and infanticide and brought better nutrition and healthcare which contrasts with the lies put out by the likes of Peter Dey that Maori were living in paradise before the settlers came and the country was colonised.

The Chiefs welcomed the Treaty of Waitangi which brought personal protection. The mixed blood descendants of these Chiefs have twisted the intent of the Treaty to make false claims and grab all they can without having worked for it, aided and abetted by Treaty “negotiator” Chris Finlayson.

Incidentally Maori life expectancy from birth was 25 years. It is now 75 years for women and 70 for men.

When are white New Zealanders going to create a Treaty and make claims for all the benefits their ancestors gave and still give, to Maori?

PM John Key let the genie out of the bottle when he agreed to make self-serving political deals with the Maori Party, and authorised the preparation of a written version of the NZ constitution.

Very necessary, but entrenching the treaty of Waitangi within it? What possible mandate did he have, to almost unilaterally organise this interference in the democratic process?

Check the makeup of the panel of 12 charged with the initial stage - undeniably worthy people, but do you sense a possible bias there, also including the fact that only the National and Maori parties are involved in this matter of such national importance? To date. The fact that the public will be invited to offer input soon is hardly comforting, given the above.

Considering that the race with whom the treaty was formed no longer exists in purity (often pointed out), that the intention and meaning of the treaty is still hotly contested, that evidently more than one version is in contention - and that the population proportions and makeup have changed out of sight since the 1800s - what madness to even consider its inclusion without vigorous open discussion in a transparent and democratic way and serious adaptation to present conditions.

Also, that the highly controversial Prof. Margaret Mutu has permission to draw up a parallel constitution is laughable, given her very public highly inflammatory and racist proclamations. Why allow the latter if it is then ignored ? Which is a worry. What sort of parody of democracy is all of this?

Prof Elizabeth Rata (Auckland university) has studied this and similar situations. She says it is now “neotribalism, in which tribal wealth is based on privatisation of public assets.”

She has long warned about the corruption of the settlement process which has become a massive rort on the NZ public and few really appreciate the scale of public resources that are being appropriated to the tribal elite, which not only create an ongoing public liability but elevate the rights of iwi above all other citizens “ Do we for a moment think that this was the intention of The Crown ? Life has changed in New Zealand with the born-again Maori and the multiple treaty claims and the apparent greed that comes with it.

I am Ngati Pakeha and from my perhaps cynical viewpoint, all I can see is less mana and more money in being Maori. My stunningly beautiful mother-in-law was the daughter of a full-blooded Ngati Kahu woman and an Englishman. She was a hard worker who raised turkeys, built fences, cooked wonderful meals, dressed beautifully, kept a fantastic garden, and her ancestry was never something she talked about, she was simply a New Zealander.

Dr. Brian McDonnell, of Irish, Maori (Tuhoe) and French descent, writes that the two groups who met at Waitangi

in 1840 are two completely different peoples now with the intermarriage of Maori with European, Asian, Pacific Islanders etc. in the last 170 years.

He wrote “The Waitangi Express” should apply the brakes to slow its headlong rush into a divisive future.”

I was stunned recently when I saw a sound-bite of Titewhai Harawira saying “we will have the airwaves as well!” – that is pure greed! Another example is the odd way an irksome taniwha can disappear whenever gold crosses palms.

I did not realise that a taniwha had a bank account and an IRD number.

Less money and more mana would make me respect those who make an income through the treaty Waitangi Express! Robin Bishop, Pyes Pa.

Scottish Taine story fictional information Mary Brooks (August 3) says that Maori have used false claims to acquire $37 billion in land, forestry, fishing rights, buildings and cash. Mary should provide the source of her information.

It seems likely that Mary is using websites with fictional information such as www.kilts.co.nz/mhorruairidh which she has previously quoted from. This website carries the fictional story of Taine Mhor coming from Scotland to New Zealand in Viking ships about 1120AD.

According to the story Taine and his 90 member community farmed on the West Coast of the North Island for 160 years. Some members then went back to Scotland and returned to New Zealand with wives. The community was eventually either enslaved or eaten by cannibals. None of this has been recorded in Scottish history and no evidence of such a settlement in New Zealand has been found.

A wonderful little A capacity to learn country falls into hands of brigands

Folic acid Were it the case that the proposed mandatory addition of folic acid to bread was intended solely to benefit the health of the person eating it, then I might have some sympathy, on grounds of freedom of choice, with those who object to such compulsion.

However, it is morally wrong to knowingly withhold such a measure when it is intended to enhance the health and well-being of the unborn infant; a low folate level in a pregnant woman will greatly increase the odds that her baby will be born with spina bifida: the evidence from international research is freely available and rock-solid. Now, by definition, a foetus cannot express its preference (even if it were aware of any), and so it falls to a responsible adult to decide on its behalf - in this case, by taking folic acid supplements. We nominally deem the expectant mother to be this person - but, regrettably, not all such women act responsibly, either through ignorance or laziness, or just occasionally, contrariness. Therefore it falls to society to step in, because a foetus is more than a mere chattel to be treated according to the whim of its bearer: if there is a known risk and, equally, a known protection against that risk, then it is ethically imperative, on

grounds of both assumed autonomy and utilitarianism, to act.

The claimed hazards of folic acid, when consumed as an additive in bread, are minimal; certainly, they pale into insignificance when compared with those of our favourite intoxicant, ethanol, even when this is drunk in modest quantity.

Finally, baker Nick Parker has neatly shot himself in the foot. His excellent bread may well contain plenty of folate, but if, as he claims, the commercial stuff is short of it - and it’s mass-produced bread that most people buy - then the addition of folic acid becomes necessary. Artisans such as he could apply for exemption, provided that they could demonstrate an adequate folate level in their own product, which people would be free to buy instead - and then we would all be happy.

Viewing these Olympic Games on television I have come to realise the number of countries which are islands about the same size as our own. They are in the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean, and the East Indies.

Most have climates and soils which allow extensive agriculture, and have other resources to help their way of life. They mostly have harbours where shipping could be accommodated.

Yet in all but a very few cases, the people in these countries live very close to the breadline, and in primitive and often violent societies.

How is ii that we , here in New Zealand, have a society where most live a fairly comfortable and productive life in relative peace and contentment?

Our physical surroundings are not so much more superior. So what is the difference?

The answer is not too difficult to find. These countries, during the outburst of European exploration and consequent exploitation, were “colonised” by people concerned only with getting wealth out of them. The colonizers were not concerned with doing anything for the local indigenous peoples.

But in New Zealand, colonists came out to live here, and to make a life for themselves, and their descendants. And so they made farms, they built factories, roads, railways, schools, and churches. They built a nation. Bur now a few noisy, power and money hungry activist Maori are trying to lay claim to all the land, and all the improvements that the hard-working colonists, and the descendants of all earlier peoples, have produced.

Our wonderful little country is falling into the hands of brigands.

“Kids, en masse, don’t enjoy studying harder subjects” (The Weekend Sun, 27 July). Why? Don’t kids find learning satisfying any more?

In blaming ‘’the liberalisation of the school system under Labour’’ for the drift to soft NCEA subjects, Professor Jacqueline Rowarth, Waikato University, is way off the mark. She should have consulted research on the process of learning. In it she’d have found learning in classrooms to be an “inherently inefficient”, in many ways toxic process that wastes half the learning capacity of the nation’s young.

But she likely doesn’t know anything of this as the entire education sector ignores the efficacy research of the late Professor Graham Nuthall, Canterbury University.

Academics making public statements like she’s done, need to be abreast of all the facts. Continually ignoring information of such pertinence means individual students and the whole country go on being short changed.

Underlining this is another finding of that same research – almost all students share a “remarkably similar” capacity to learn.

It means we should be expecting high-ended, even academic outcomes from almost all. As a nation, we must be active about arresting this drift from learning – a world trend by all accounts. What more simple way to put some real satisfaction back into it than by making use of the existing research.

Employment arrangements Faulkner’s Corner, in the Sun of last week, advised that the new Tauranga City Council CEO was going to, this week, hold meetings with individual elected representatives to get their views and aspirations on how the organisations should go forward.

However this week we were informed that meetings were currently underway to decide the interim CEO’s employment package along with the setting of key performance indicators (KPI’s). Also rather than just an earlier stated 6 month term it now appears to be a proposed 12 month contract.

I have already expressed my views at the appointing of just an interim CEO but this latest revelation really concerns me further as the person is already in the role but his employment terms and conditions are not yet in place. Furthermore until the conditions are in place the acting CEO is still the acting chief executive so my view would be that until the contract is signed and sealed, with all the I,s dotted and the tees crossed, that he should not be on the ratepayer payroll.

Also the setting of KPI’s for an interim chief executive could also be deemed to be rather interesting and I wonder if one of these will be the promotion of the amalgamation of Councils, within the region, which appears to be the main goal of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, Messrs Crosby and Stewart.

What this city needs is a CEO that will assist in resolving the long term issues, that this city faces, and in my view that is not achieved by appointing just a short term CEO. Mike Baker, Bethlehem.

Enigma on the Western Front As a keen follower of your political page in The Sun I generally enjoy most of the weekly articles but I am getting more confused by your correspondent from The Western Front. After reading his recent article I thought it must now be in code so I felt obliged to do further research and went to your website to see if there were some clues. I found none.

Determined not to give up I recall the “enigma code” used by the Germans during world war two. I thought there may be a correlation between that and “The Western Front” in France after the D Day landings.

Alas foiled again. So in desperation I re examined the “Da Vinci Code” for possible, clues as you can guess, nothing! Now being absolutely foiled I was forced to concede defeat and must now wait for next week’s article to see if I can decipher it.

Family History Month: Tracing your family tree Heather says the library is a good starting point for New Zealand research – with its microfiche records of births, deaths and marriages and census rolls.

Even after 40 years Heather still has not uncovered all of her puzzle. She is still trying to trace her great-grandfather who was born in Chelsea in 1835 – two years before the birth register began.

For Heather McLean, genealogy is a bit like a jigsaw puzzle, but the added challenge is you need to hunt down a lot of the puzzle’s pieces.

After 40 years tracing family trees, Heather knows a few tricks. As part of family history month in August she is helping people trace their New Zealand family history at Tauranga Library.

Heather, who describes genealogy (family history) as being like an itch, says some research techniques have changed since she began but the satisfaction is the same.

“It’s like an allergy. Once you start scratching, you can’t stop.” While some people are worried about uncovering ‘skeletons’ in their closet, she says most convicts had only stolen a loaf of bread or other food to feed the family.

“When I started, we didn’t have any computers – it was all snail mail. I remember I started off with my dad’s old Remington typewriter and you would send a letter off to England and it would be at least three months before you’d hear back.”

Now some of the detective work has been taken out with dedicated family history websites such as www.ancestry.com where you can pay for the information.

After writing three family history books, Heather now gets her satisfaction from helping others. Like any research, she says it is critical to double-check you have found the right person. She has heard of people who have spent years researching someone else’s family.

Dedication is always an inspiration There seems to have been a lot happening this past week: amazing achievements, deaths, fascinating court cases, and some musical stuff too…

The Olympics are rolling on. And, although I profess no particular interest in most of the sports on display (if indeed many are sports), the sight of people bringing such skill and dedication to their chosen disciplines is inspiring. That pretty much the whole world competes makes this possibly the most globally binding happening that exists today. Cool.

An Auckland court is debating whether sending the full might of New Zealand’s Special Tactics Group (formerly the antiterrorist squad) to capture a rather portly billionaire accused of copyright fraud might have been a tad excessive. You think?

One of the more amusing quotes from the case was this: “Dotcom’s wealth was also considered a risk element because it meant the tycoon could buy items he liked, which might include guns.” All you rich folk out there better watch out for black helicopters in the night: who knows what you’ve been buying with all that wealth...

Doing time

Still, at least we’re not in Russia where a young - three girls, early twenties - punk band called Pussy Riot are facing years in jail for playing inside a church without permission. Of course their main crime is criticising the country’s current dictator.

Something like that could never happen here, could it? Certainly not unless the Americans asked us.

And a couple of my many heroes have died in recent days. French filmmaker Christopher Marker passed away at the grand age of 91. He was a ‘film essayist’ creating movies that were dream-like meditations on politics, memory and cats.

He made a film called Sans Soleil which I watch every year on my birthday, each time delving a little more deeply into its mysterious magic.

Chris Marker also made La Jettée, a short but brilliant film which was later the basis for Terry Gilliam’s Twelve Monkeys. He was a private, reclusive man who would often respond to requests for a photograph by sending a picture of his favourite cat.

And Australian Robert Hughes died. He was my

favourite art critic, if it’s not too pretentious to have a favourite art critic. His writing was sparklingly acerbic and unapologetically opinionated. He described New York art doyen Julian Schnabel as being “to painting what Stallone is to acting - a lurching display of oily pectorals - except that Schnabel makes bigger public claims for himself ”. He also annoyed a lot of Australians by casting a critical eye over their history of criminality and racial destruction, so full marks there.

Floating the boat

Closer to home, the Jazz Society has taken one more step toward righting the somewhat listing Jazz Festival boat. Becks Chambers has been engaged as the new festival director, which is excellent news. Becks has been involved in the festival’s delivery for the past few years and is friendly and skilled; with her intimate knowledge of the event’s running, she seems the perfect choice.

The artistic side of things is staying in committee, so the current group will pick the acts for a festival that is refocusing on New Zealand jazz, a fitting goal for the country’s national festival.

All kudos must go to Darryl Haigh, who had the job of president rather foisted on him just before this year’s festival and has, along with vice-president Mike Baker, been instrumental in charting a new course for Tauranga’s biggest event. Keep up the good work! watusi@thesun.co.nz

THE HUNGER GAMES Dir: Gary Ross - Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth I don’t think much of The Hunger Games. But, as the film that re-started an archery craze and broke records amongst the Twilight generation, it certainly merits a look. Because, if nothing else, its two and a half hour running time suggests it is meant to be Taken Seriously.

It would be nice to think that it is some sort of warning about the evils of reality TV. No such luck. Set in a world of rich and poor where each year 24 young poor folk (two from each ‘district’) fight to the death for the televised entertainment of the rich folk, the film may be self-important but its metaphors are simultaneously heavy-handed and incoherent.

Jennifer Lawrence is terrific in the lead, as gutsy as she was in Winter’s Bone, and there are good support

turns from Woody Harrelson and David Strathaird. Stylistically, jarring cuts and the now-wearisome jittery hand-held camera abound, presumably to add a sense of immediacy and documentary ‘realism’. But the world and the Games are unconvincing and variations of the plot abound in other films, from The Running Man to Rollerblade to Japan’s Battle Royal.

But, despite the run time, the film struggles to get to grips with philosophical issues which get an occasional airing, usually in the form of Donald Sutherland’s elder statesman who pontificates about the meaning of the Games without ever making much sense.

It’s big, it’s epic, and there’ll be more of them, but ultimately its just simplistic pulp fiction.

Much like The Immortals and indeed the preceding Clash of the Titans, Wrath of the Titans takes a ‘make it up as you go’ approach to Greek mythology, with half-god Perseus (Sam Worthington) dragged from his quiet life of fishing to go questing again. This time he has to brave the underworld to free daddy Zeus (Liam Neeson, slumming it) from the clutches of Hades (Ralph Feinnes, ditto), save the human race and – naturally – battle a bunch of randomly assembled mythological CGI creatures.

The first one wasn’t much cop and this is much the same, though unlike Clash… it does actually feature a Titan.

Mark Wahlberg’s stoic movie persona has served him well across genres, from his anchoring turn in The Fighter to comedies such as The Other Guys. In Contraband he seems right at home as Chris, an ex-smuggler coping with that movie cliché, one last job (to help his bother-in-law). But if the set-up is hackneyed, the execution ticks all the right boxes: ingenious plans, action, double crosses, evil drug dealers, an exotic location (Panama) and a look that is at once gritty and glossy.

It’s not going to set the world on fire but there’s not much to complain about in this solid thriller.

THE WAY

In a small town in snowy mountains a young father takes his son out into the woods and the boy wanders off. That’s how Angels Crest starts, echoes of the tragedy reverberating through the tiny community as the subsequent court case divides the townfolk and frees various skeletons from their closets. The characters are vividly evoked by a fine cast, including Thomas Dekker, Mira Sorvino, Jeremy Piven and Elizabeth McGovern, and the film is beautifully crafted, from the fine cinematography to the sensitive intelligent script. Classy stuff (not cheerful).

European tunes set to thrill at Baycourt The Weekend Sun has five lots of two tickets to ‘A Taste of Europe’ to give away to lucky readers who can tell us how old guest violinist Martin Riseley was when he performed his first solo concert.

Music lovers, music teachers and students, and all supporters of Bay of Plenty Symphonia from the wider BOP and beyond, will be enthralled by ‘A Taste of Europe,’ at Baycourt Theatre Sunday August 19 from 3pm.

Guest violinist Martin Riseley needs no introduction to chamber music audiences, though this will be his first solo performance in Tauranga. His musical accomplishments in New Zealand and overseas are extraordinary for such a young musician, according to symphonia promoter Marlene Stewart. They range from playing his first solo concert at the age of 10 to receiving a special award from Lord Yehudi Menuhin at the 1988 Portsmouth String Quartet Competition as a member of the Vivo String Quartet, to many other significant awards, to graduating from Juilliard

in 1996 with his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree, to playing with the world’s finest musicians and playing in leading orchestras, concertmaster for 15 years of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in Canada and now Head of Strings at the NZ School of Music.

“The audience will know they are in the presence of a virtuoso violinist when they hear Martin play Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole.”

Rena lifeboat launched this weekend The Rena’s first lifeboat will go on display this weekend in a pirate party extravaganza at Palm Beach Plaza in Papamoa.

The three tonne, 2.9metre wide Greg Clarke lifeboat from the ship that grounded with Delwynne on the Astrolabe Reef in 2011 was Hahunga from purchased by plaza director Greg Tauranga Clarke for $20,800.

The lifeboat is due to arrive at Palm Beach Plaza on Saturday and will be revealed to the public Sunday.

Sticking with the ship theme, a free Pirate of the Pacific show will kick off on the main stage at 1pm before people are directed outside for the unveiling.

There will also be a live draw to win a pirate’s treasure chest worth $1000.

Marketing manager Warwick Clark says the weekend will be used to again raise money for Child Cancer Foundation. During the unveiling a pirate will be collecting donations.

The Rena lifeboat will remain at the plaza for one month before being moved to the Tauranga Lifestyle Expo, where it will be used for fundraising again.

“The intention for the Rena lifeboat is that longterm we take it around to different events for fundraising in the community.”

Currently it is being used to raise funds for Child Cancer Foundation and Papamoa Surf Lifesaving.

Warwick says it is a way of turning something disastrous into something good for Tauranga.

Greg wants to use the boat as a tribute to all the volunteer work put in by locals to save the beaches and protect the environment. Banners thanking the community for their clean-up work will be displayed with the lifeboat.

On Sunday children are encouraged to dress up as pirates and prizes will be given to the best dressed.

Flo’s ideas last week all sound too much for me, all those sports require the use of energy. These days I am all for sports like these to be included in the Doggy (style) Olympics: (a) Wink wink, nudge nudge freestyle. Best not to compete as chasing a Chinese takeaway, and having to explain that the reason I swim like a fish is because I have been cloned from one. Takes too much explaining, but being on hand to clean up the wontons at the end is what you get a medal for.

In a couple of weeks it will be one year since the Rena ran aground on Astrolabe Reef.

A day before the event, in fact just a minute before the grounding, no-one would have expected this outcome.

Yet as we all know, a time pressure, a short cut, a lack of attentiveness and disaster! The key navigational points missed. A wrong course charted, disaster!

A ship always looks on course until it is measured against a reference point, an external standard, something with a known reference.

Our nation is currently debating two very significant issues - The Marriage Amendment Bill and Christian education in our schools. Both of these debates are being presented as simple ‘course corrections’ reflecting changes

in modern society - quite safe if we are sailing in open seas.

However, if we are losing sight of (or deliberately ignoring) the foundations of an equitable society such as honesty and truthfulness, justice and moral integrity - qualities specifically taught and modelled in Judeo-Christian tradition - then we run the risk of ‘discovering’ reefs with impending disasters awaiting us.

Before we make course corrections because it looks ‘all clear’ on the surface, let’s be very careful to check that ‘marriage amendment’ and ‘education without values’ does not run us aground.

As C.S Lewis said, “Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil”.

Tauranga residents can now be driven to any health-related appointments at Tauranga or Grace Hospital by shuttle with the introduction of a new service starting on Monday, August 13.

The shuttle will be available for pick-up and drop-off service from inside Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Papamoa boundaries.

Ten WBOP U11 rugby players made the Bay of Plenty U11 paper side following the Ellis Trophy competition contested last week. It was a great end to a successful week for those from the Western Bay. While the U11 selection lost its final, the U12 and U13 sides triumphed over their Central and Eastern rivals. All up, Western Bay players took 31 of 65 spots available in the Bay squads across three age grades.
