Sailing’s silver centurions
Tauranga sailor Peter Burling’s Olympic silver medal alongside Blair Tuke was the 100th medal won by New Zealand in more than a century of competing at the Olympic Games.
That tally may be added to by a handful of other Bay athletes over the coming days, including Tauranga hockey players Samantha Charlton and Gemma Flynn - who will face
off against Great Britain for bronze– as well as Tauranga BMX rider Kurt Pickard and BMX rider Sarah Walker of Kawerau. Former Tauranga Boys’ College student Brent
Newdick remains an outside chance for a medal in the men’s decathlon, while, at printing time, Lisa Carrington was also looking good in the canoe sprint competition. See page 5.
