English, but not as we know it We’ve had a stampede of ewes telling us your favourite bastardisations of the English language, otherwise known as ‘Stan Walker-isms’.

 

Although we are not sure that ewes stampede. It’s technically more of a flocking, although we’d have to consult an agricultural specialist to be sure.

Astute readers may recall that last week we featured Stan, with his trademark “Yous are awesome” which we have interpreted, since there’s no such word as ‘yous,’ to be ‘ewes’ and assume he is acknowledging the contribution of sheep to the New Zealand economy.

We invited readers to send similar mash-ups of perfectly good language. Thanks to all ewes who sent dem in.

Still, if I had one of these calendars, it would probably stay on January all year.

One law for all

A grassroots political party, committed to ending what it sees as racial separatism in New Zealand, launches nationally today, with hopes Tauranga will be one of its biggest supporters.

One Law for All has a sole objective – that all New Zealanders are treated equally in law, regardless of race. The party’s policies include abolishing the Waitangi Tribunal, abolishing race-based seats and positions in central and local Government; and stripping all references to the Treaty of Waitangi.

With the party yet to select a leader, 74-year-old Napier man Tom Johnson is temporarily fronting the party and says racial inequality is the most important issue facing New Zealanders.

“I have felt that for some time.

I love my country and I am not prepared to see myself become a second class citizen here, and I don’t want to see my nine grandkids grow up in a country that becomes an apartheid state, in whatever form.

“Our history has been revised,

sanitised and all of the sudden the truth is not being taught, and that’s unfortunate, in my opinion.”

Tom says the response so far has been overwhelmingly positive – from a variety of ethnicities.

The party’s website received about 4000 hits across two days last weekend.

He knows it’s a “sensitive” issue, but Tom is encouraging people to stand up for equality.

“Many people are afraid to put their head above the parapet. And they avoid it.

“This is unfortunate because we have ended up enduring a lot of things that shouldn’t have Bruce happened.”

Matthews 021 580 580 He stresses it is not an attack on Maori. “We want to be a part of a principle that appeals to all New Zealanders, regardless of their ethnicity, hence one law for all.”

“We have to convince a lot of people. We are very hopeful that all the wonderful Maori people I have played rugby with, that I admire and call my friends, will also support us.”

Today the party’s steering committee is launching its policies with The Weekend Sun, in the hope of gaining strong local support and members.

Man hit by car in Papamoa

A Te Puke man was hit by a car on Papamoa Beach Road in the early hours of Thursday morning.

When The Weekend Sun went to print the 25-yearold man was in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital after being struck by a car near Allan Place around 5.45am on June 6.

The man was taken to Tauranga Hospital and later airlifted to Waikato Hospital with serious head injuries.

He was walking along Papamoa Beach Road between Parton and Domain Roads between 5.30am and 5.45am when he was hit by the car.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the man’s family has been informed and police are investigating.

Police are looking to speak to witnesses who can contact Constable Ian Sadler at Tauranga South Police on 578 3460.

Trio charged over swan killings

Three men are facing animal cruelty charges over the Boxing Day footage showing a jet boat running down black swans on the Tauranga Harbour.

The charges follow a joint investigation by SPCA and Fish and Game New Zealand into the footage.

Tauranga SPCA inspector Jason Blair says a total of six charges have been laid under both the Animal Welfare Act and the Wildlife Act. All three men are due to appear in Tauranga District Court later this month.

Mob drug ring accused bailed

A patched Mongrel Mob member from Tauranga arrested as part of a drug bust that netted more than $380,000 worth of drugs and precursor chemicals has been remanded on bail.

Elijah Kingi, 30, was arrested in Tauranga on Wednesday and charged with supplying a Class A controlled drug, conspiracy to possess a Class A drug for supply and possession of a Class A controlled drug for supply.

Kingi is one of nine people facing charges following an investigation by the Organised and Financial Crime Agency in New Zealand.

Around 130 grams of methamphetamine valued at around $91,000 and $130,000 case was seized as a result of the investigation. A further 6.6kgs of ContacNT valued at around $290,000 was also seized with 2.2kgs by police at a South Auckland address and 4.4kgs by the New Zealand Customs Service at the Auckland International Mail Centre.

Kingi was remanded on bail and is due in Registrar’s Court on June 13.

Police are on the hunt for 10 women in the Tauranga and wider Western Bay of Plenty area who have warrants for their arrest.

City water for Boscabel homes

Boscabel Drive residents will be able to drink Tauranga City’s water – but it will cost them $11,500 per household.

Tauranga City councillors decided at Wednesday’s Annual Plan deliberations to proceed with connecting the Ohauiti subdivision to the city’s water supply.

Boardwalk build begins Work on the Pilot Bay boardwalk will begin this Monday but Tauranga City Council has encountered problems with the Salisbury Wharf car park section.

Tauranga City Council’s project team reports the sea wall that runs along the edge of the car park is in bad condition meaning a concrete path will have to be built on top of the sea wall, instead of the boardwalk extending from the sea wall.

The changes will add an additional $16,000 to the $500,000 boardwalk, but this is opposed to the $240,000, which council says it will cost to strengthen and re-build the wall for the boardwalk.

“It turns out the wall is in worse shape than the project budget can cope with. It would need an estimated $160,000 of strengthening and rebuilding work (based on a rough $2000 per metre) before a boardwalk can be securely attached to it,” says the council.

It would then cost an additional $80,000 to build the car park section of the boardwalk out from the seawall.

TCC says the cheaper and more practical option is to place the concrete footpath along the top of the seawall that will be supported by its own weight.

“The biggest trade-off will be that the concrete path can’t hang out over the sea wall so it has to encroach into the car park,” reports council.

The Salisbury Wharf car park will need to be re-configured with the possible loss of a few parking spaces.

“The project team is finding it difficult to argue with the cost savings this option offers.”

Final design on the car park pathway is still being undertaken.

The first step in construction on the boardwalk approved by council earlier this year is the pedestrian crossing at Prince Ave.

New knockback for Greerton Library The proposed new Greerton Library, which has been in the planning stages for 20 years, received another knockback from councillors this week by being put off for another year.

Councillors, in their annual plan deliberations, failed to approve the project’s $3.2 million budget.

Even though $1.8 million of the money is in the bank (in the form of development contributions), and the council owns neighbouring commercial

properties, it bought six years ago for the purpose, the project’s opponents brought other councillors on side by citing flooding issues.

David Stewart says the timing is bad because the council is looking at dealing with serious flooding issues.

“There are times to do different projects and this isn’t the time,” says David. “It’s time now to deal with the flooding.”

The flooding in the suburbs of Matua, Mount Maunganui and Arataki was also mentioned by former supporters – councillors Bill Faulkner and Wayne Moultrie – as the reason they changed their minds.

Councillor Catherine Stewart says the continued support for the new library by her fellow councillors on the Greerton Library task force – Terry Molloy, Larry Baldock, Bill Grainger and Tony Christiansen – showed they were too involved to see the bigger picture.

Mayor Stuart Crosby moved the issue be put off for a year, after the motion to proceed was defeated. He suggested

putting off the library decision, “until we understand our liabilities in other areas”.

Speaking afterwards, Friends of the Library president Kate Clark says she will be taking the decision back to her members for further discussion.

The current Greerton Library is old, it leaks, and Kate is sure there is fungus growing in the carpet. With a 450m2 floor, it is inadequate for a catchment of 40,000 people – making it a core activity that does not meet the council’s own level of service.

“I don’t believe it was a good decision,” says Kate. “There’s a lot of people for whom a new library would make their lives so much easier and more enjoyable.”

Tauranga City Council has recently funded the new ASB Baypark Arena, assisted with the Mount Greens project, and the Arataki Community Centre.

“I just wonder what they have put in at Greerton over recent years and I can’t really think of anything,” says Kate.

Nothing will be left up In the Air when Tauranga Girls’ College students take to the stage celebrating 100 years of aviation as part of this year’s Stage Challenge.

The performance follows aviator Jean Batten’s journey of determination through the Great Depression.

The girls’ entry is one from 11 schools around the region taking part in the two-night shows at Baycourt on June 20 and 21.

In its 21st year the Stage Challenge is a chance for students to showcase their skills in dance, drama and design in a professional performing arts event.

Teacher Jodie Moore says with 2013 being 100 years since the first powered flight, the girls decided

to celebrate the life of Jean Batten – one of New Zealand’s pioneer aviators.

“It’s about her story and success in being able to overcome obstacles and strike to achieve her goals in a period of adversity.”

The team of 45 girls has been working since the beginning of the year to produce a show Jodie says will stand apart.She says the key is choreography, which offers different elements of contemporary dance.

“The girls make multi-level formations with their bodies. All of the set and lighting and costumes will all work together.”

Tauranga Girls’ College is a veteran Stage Challenge performer, and Jodie says this year they also have a junior entry in the Raw Division.

“For the older girls it’s about being a leader, while the younger ones just want to be part of it, and see what can be achieved.”

More than 16,000 secondary students from 200 schools will participate in the event nationally.

Event manager Sarah-Jane Phillips says the event gives students a natural high and is a way of showing students they can have fun without alcohol, drugs and tobacco.

“Stage Challenge is about giving students the opportunity to make positive decisions in several areas of their lives.” Other Tauranga entries include Bethlehem College, Tauranga Boys’ College, Otumoetai College, Papamoa College, Katikati College, Otumoetai Intermediate, Mount Maunganui Intermediate and Aquinas College.

Baycourt future undecided The long term future of Baycourt Community and Arts Centre remains in the air despite Tauranga City Council agreeing to keep a closer eye on the venue operations.

Councillors discussed the community theatre on Durham Street and whether to transfer direct control from council to Bay Leisure and Events as part of the Annual Plan hearings this week.

After attending two workshops last month to discuss the venue’s issues and potential solutions, councillors unanimously agreed further investigations are needed into the possibility of transferring Baycourt to Bay Leisure and Events Limited.

Deputy Mayor David Stewart says it makes sense to hold back on any decision as time is needed to consult all parties involved.

B g b rthdays Mavis Rushworth and Florence Maitland Harvey share something special.

On Wednesday they both celebrated a milestone birthday. While Mavis was welcomed into the 100 club, Florence is seven steps ahead, making her 107th birthday.

A simple life of good healthy food and gardening – that is the recipe for a long, healthy life according to Tauranga’s Mavis Rushworth.

On Wednesday, Mavis, who lives at Arcadia Manor, marked her 100th birthday with a morning tea – but the major celebration is this Saturday when 40 members of her family will have a special lunch.

Born in Warkworth, Mavis went to school in Whangarei before getting a job in Auckland at the YMCA, where she met her husband Donovan. After getting married, the young couple shifted to Lower Hutt where they settled and had a family of three.

Looking back, Mavis says gardening has always been a passion and remembers her own mother saying, since she was a child, “I was always happy when I had my hands in the dirt”.

Mavis, who shifted to Tauranga six years ago when her daughter Margaret Dredge also shifted from Wellington, kept up her interest in gardening until two years ago when she shifted into the retirement home.

Aside from losing much of her hearing, Mavis is in good health.

She played down her birthday, saying she did not know what all the fuss was about – but she’s very flattered that so many family were coming from overseas including her sons – Clive who lives in Melbourne and Paul in Fiji - and their families.

Look after your family and the Lord will look after you – that is the advice of 107-year-old Florence Maitland Harvey.

The oldest woman at Melrose Lifestyle Care and Village celebrated her 107th birthday on Wednesday.

When asked what her secret is and she says “the Lord” and family.

“That is on the Lord’s side. It is his loving care.”

“I’ve got a good family,” says Florence, who adores her family and has a close relationship with her only son Ross. “He’s a great son.”

Her daily activities include reading the newspaper and going for walks.

When she was younger, Florence loved to travel. She has seen almost every town and city in New Zealand and has even travelled across Australia and to China. By Zoe Hunter

There is never a good time for a medical emergency, but with about 100 St John youth members putting their first aid skills to the test this weekend there will be plenty of help on hand at the Historic Village.

St John Central Region youth manager Kelvin Hallberg says the event on Saturday promises to be highly competitive, with youth members aged from six to 18 competing for a chance to represent the Bay of Plenty at the central region contest.

“Anyone can come down to watch the competitions and see the young people working on different scenarios.”

The youth programme, which begins with Penguins 6-8-years old, focuses on developing life skills through first aid, service and leadership.

“It’s all about turning young people into role models. It’s more than just first aid.”

Tauranga district youth manager Debbie Mitchell says the youth programme is growing in popularity with three youth groups currently operating in Tauranga and two at Mount Maunganui.

School noise patrol Everybody loves listening to their favourite music, but concerns about loud music leading to a hearing loss epidemic is prompting the Bay of Plenty Hearing Association to take the message to Tauranga schools.

Association project and information coordinator Toni Bieleski says the ‘Dangerous Decibels’ programme, being launched at Merivale Primary School on June 18, will teach pupils about the risks of playing loud music.

“It’s predicted that we are heading to an epidemic of hearing loss among young people – they are predicting that they could have the hearing loss equivalent to an 80-year-old by the time they are 30.�

The programme, for Year 5 and older students, is being rolled out to interested primary and intermediate schools in the Western Bay, with Toni in discussions with some secondary schools.

Toni says we live in a much noisier world than our parents – but most young people do not realise the danger they are putting themselves in and that lost hearing can never be recovered.

Listening to loud music on headphones – particularly with ear buds which direct all noise into the ear – is a particular problem among young people. Tests by Toni, on secondary student’s MP3 player volume settings, has shown 80 per cent played the music above 100 dB – the level that could damage hearing within 15 minutes.

Annual plan deliberations focused on stormwater It seems you just can’t win where Council’s finances are concerned.

Last year’s financials ended in a $3.7million surplus – due in main part to interest rate related benefits.

$500,000 goes to debt reduction and the balance comes off this year’s rating revenue requirement. As elected members sat down to deliberate on this year’s annual plan/rate revenue requirement we were happily anticipating a six per cent increase.

But we were also told this meant that by applying the $3.2million this year, next year we face a nine per cent rate revenue increase per the 10 year plan.

Well that will just have to be reduced like we did this year – by active reductions in what Council is doing and how it’s doing it,

including on-going expert financial management. But we have to factor into the 2014-15 budget millions of dollars in extra flood protection work not contemplated in the 10 year plan. Into deliberations: the old Mount Cosmopolitan Club, which was the subject of a submission by Rob Paterson on behalf of the ‘Modern Museum’ group, will be invited to make a proposal to turn the empty building into a modern museum. A submission to fund $20,000 for Papakainga Project Management was declined.

The big decision

The biggie for the first day was Council deciding with a 7-4 vote to delay the proposed Greerton Library for a year while the financial consequences of the flooding protection become known. The Council library working group, who have put a lot of effort in no doubt, were really septic at this. Working group chairman Larry Baldock

churlishly then moved Council sell the adjoining properties and apply the proceeds to flood protection. These properties were purchased years ago expressly to provide for Greerton Village green and library development.

While Larry was tossing his toys out of the cot no one else did and this initiative failed for want of a seconder. What is proposed is a delay in view of the serious flooding matters that occurred recently. Working group member Tony Christiansen thought now was the best time to do the new library because we had the funding. That’s partly true - $1.8million in development contributions, $200,000 in renewals financing and borrowing of $1.291million. That’s the bit that’s in contention. If we do sell the adjoining properties it’s paramount ratepayers get

top dollar and the sale has to be on Council’s terms, not influenced by timing, loans and market fluctuations. Cricket will only get $35,000 for a second internationally compliant wicket if the bid for second tier world cup games is successful. A majority thought that these games would be of great benefit to Tauranga. Baycourt will get a return to active management to comply with Council’s usage policy of 1/3 not for profit, 1/3 youth and 1/3 commercial. An investigation will investigate the pros and cons of shifting it to the CCO, Bay Leisure and Bay Events Ltd. A function room will be built adjacent to the crematorium.

I successfully added a resolution making approval conditional upon Council never operating it as a cafe. The last one, Café 100, under Baycourt, went belly-up costing ratepayers plenty. No more ratepayer funded bail outs.

Funding Gate Pa commemorations will be subject to application to the Event Funding round. This fund has $200,000 available and I mentioned this amount would be almost gobbled up by this one event. Larry said it should be increased to $400,000 and Mayor Stuart Crosby said that they may not get the full amount. A report outlining a plan to commemorate World War I did not make clear the full story. The plan is to have two 20foot containers adapted to display World War I paraphernalia presently held in storage at the museum storage warehouse at the Mount. A lottery grant of $118,000 is available. Eventually it was made clear that ratepayers would be in for $5000 a year for seven years. Next year is 100 years since the “war to end all wars” as it was heralded at the time. The human race hasn’t learned the lesson in the past century has it?

On day two elected members considered internal submissions from staff – largely on matters that have arisen since the draft budget was floated in March.

We bowled out some items that had been added in as contingency items like $150,000 extra for a cleaning contract that staff anticipated might increase. We decided to wait for the outcome of the tender process. $45,000 for costs associated with Government’s decision to place sale of liquor responsibility with Councils was removed from a ratepayer liability. Costs must be user pays and we will seek to have Local Government NZ involved so there will be one set of costs instead of about 70 for each of the local councils. Another example of Government divesting responsibility and costs onto councils.

An extra $50,000 for the New Year’s Eve party at the Mount was removed. Ratepayers fund the party, as it’s cheaper than the riots of yesteryear and is a summer visitor attraction. $160,000 went in to gas heat the Mount Hot Saltwater pools. This is thought to be a more viable option than the hot water bore which is unreliable and unable to provide a consistent temperature. The bore is hot fresh water which runs through a heat exchanger, heating salt water pumped from the harbour and then gets returned to the harbour.

All afternoon on stormwater issues – this year’s major item and it’s a far bigger problem than most people imagine. No decisions as the column went to press but you can follow up on SunLive. We heard first-hand heart breaking submissions from affected residents. Stormwater mixed with sewerage flowing through homes and sections, more than once in many cases, produces all sorts of issues – health, safety (water flowing so deep and fast), inability to insure, insecurity (fear every time it rains), to list a few.

Earlier we had cut out $600,000 which Council had budgeted for principle repayments on land purchased at Te Tumu. This will help service extra stormwater loans but more money is needed. Meanwhile staff will get on with computer modelling which is unbelievably expensive, but will ensure that the fixes will be effective. There will be no quick fixes nor any guarantee that the remedies will work for every downpour. Daily media attendance has again been intermittent and selective. Unfortunately that means that only part of the process (selected) is conveyed to you in ratepayer land. SunLive is your best bet in my view.

Supporting intermediate’s Samoan plans Students from Te Puke Intermediate will travel to Samoa in September in a bid to experience first-hand what life in the Pacific island is like.

The children, aged 11 and 12, will visit schools in Samoa, sleep in traditional fale, and observe remaining damage caused during the 2009 tsunami.

To help fund the trip, the school students

are holding a ‘Monster Garage Sale’ in the PAC building in Te Puke this Sunday.

Included in the sale, on June 9 sale from 9am-1pm, is a cake stall, food and a raffle for a trailer load of firewood.

A Tauranga SPCA spokesperson says it’s thanks to Buddy’s microchip that he was reunited with his family.

When Buddy was found, he was “really skinny” and one of his eyes was swollen. “But other than that he is completely fine.”

Donating to save lives

Tauranga tiler Mike McKenzie is encouraging people to give a little by donating plasma, as World Blood Donor Day nears.

Mike is Tauranga’s first plasma donor after donating at the Cameron Road Blood Donor Centre in October last year.

He decided to donate plasma after his sister-in-law was diagnosed with leukaemia last year.

“My neighbour Ange works there as well and I thought if I could help someone out then it seems like the right thing to do.”

Mike had donated blood on a number of other occasions before donating plasma and says the new process took a bit longer.

“You get your red blood back, so you’re not missing anything. It’s not too much different except you should allow an hour for the process.”

He says you just basically sit on a chair and away you go.

Warming up with rice

We know its winter when the snow starts falling and we start to see pictures on the television news of the sheep bleating about the snow on their back. Thankfully, that is further south, as I am still picking my basil.

Even with Tauranga having such a temperate climate, I know eventually the winter vegetables will dominate the garden.

In the colder weather a lot of us like to warm ourselves with soup and other one-pot wonders.

Rice puddings are made all over the world – some are baked and some are boiled in milk.

Often they are flavoured with cinnamon, cardamom, pistachio, vanilla, raisins and dates, with some countries having many variations.

The rice can be sweetened with sugar, honey, sweetened condensed milk and fruit syrups.

This week, I have a simple, warming rice pudding – and it is something you can put together without too much effort. It’s also a great reward after working outside on a chilly day.

Rice pudding Serves four

Ingredients 2 and ½ cups whole milk 70g short grain white rice Pinch of salt 1 egg ¼ cup dark brown sugar 1 vanilla pod, split ¼ tsp cinnamon ½ cup raisins (plumped up in a little hot water and brown sugar).

These can also be soaked in rum, if desired.

Method In a medium size, heavy bottom saucepan, bring the milk, rice and salt and the split, scraped vanilla pod to the boil over a high heat.

Reduce to a simmer and keep stirring to prevent rice sticking.

Cook for about 25 minutes until rice is tender.

In a small bowl, whisk together egg and brown sugar until well mixed.

Add half a cup of the hot rice mixture (remove vanilla pods sticks) and whisk vigorously to incorporate.

Now, add this mixture back into the pot and cook while stirring on a low heat for five to eight minutes until the mixture thickens.

Do not allow it to boil. Add the raisins and cinnamon, and then serve hot or cold.

Sprinkle with extra cinnamon.

Rum-soaked raisins is one my favourite toppings but even diced Russian fudge is great with this dessert.

Delicious flavours with chocolate and feijoas There are so many things we can do with feijoas, and I have to say, I have made many cakes but this one is the best ever.

Feijoa chocolate cake – I have never made one before, but I found a recipe that I adjusted to my likings and would love to share it with you.

So get out there and get picking those feijoas, now’s the season.

Chocolate Feijoa Cake

Ingredients 200g softened butter 3/4cup caster sugar 2 eggs 8 peeled, sliced feijoas 2 Tbsp brown sugar 2 tsp cinnamon (used separately) 2cups plan flour

Tips with a difference

For something different this week, here is a list of small, rather quirky tasty tips!

1. When boiling a pot of water, place a wooden spoon across the top of the pot and it will stop the water from boiling over.

2. Store grapes in the freezer, these can be used as ice cube replacements in glasses of wine, the grapes won’t water down the drink.

3. Putting pancake mix inside an old, squeeze tomato sauce bottle makes for no-mess pan cake pouring.

4. Using unscented dental floss when cutting soft cakes and cheeses results in perfect straight slices.

5. When making pasta dishes, keep a small cup of the pasta’s cooking liquid and add to the sauce. The gluten helps thicken the sauce as well as coating the pasta better.

   

2 tps baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 1cup cocoa powder 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg 1/2cup sour cream

Method Lightly oil or spray a 20cm ring tin and line the bottom with strips of baking paper. Heat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius.

Peel feijoas (I used 8 egg-sized feijoas) with a sharp knife. Slice each feijoa in half lengthwise, then slice thinly.

Place sliced fruit in a bowl with brown sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon and allow to sit for 20 minutes.

Cream the softened butter and caster sugar for about 15 minutes until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time then transfer the mixture to a large bowl.

Stir in the prepared feijoas, sifted flour, baking soda, cocoa, and the second measure of cinnamon and the nutmeg, alternately with the sour cream in two

Maria, who describes herself as someone who hates any waste, wants to hear from anyone who has surplus fruit or produce to give away and people who can help pick fruit from trees.

“There is just too much going rotten and wasted, so I want it to be available for anyone who wants it.”

Maria is hoping the programme, she

has called the Food Forages Initiative, will be embraced by the community.

“I’ve already had a few people contact me and I just want to hear from more who can help. I’d love to see more involved, especially in spring and summer when there is so much in the garden.”

Rena captive rare birds recovering Monitoring of the rare New Zealand dotterels captured during the Rena oil spill shows the population is recovering well, according ecologist Dr John Dowding.

About 120 dotterels were in the area between Matakana Island and Matata at the time of the spill in October 2011, and the decision was made to take 60 into captivity to keep them out of the oil’s path.

Independent shorebird ecologist John has been monitoring the population since it was released back to its habitat at the end of 2011. He says more than three-quarters of the dotterels taken into captivity were alive a year later.

“There were some losses in the first month after release - probably due to the respiratory condition that killed six birds

while they were captive – but after that survival has been normal.” Most of the survivors were paired and breeding again one year after release, he says.

“One year on, numbers at most of the important sites are similar to those before the grounding,” he says. “This is an encouraging result – dotterels can live for up to 30 years – and the one season of disruption needs to be viewed in that context.

“After some losses shortly after release, the birds held in captivity also appear to have re-adjusted to life in the wild, showing normal rates of survival and dispersal, and typical levels of breeding activity.

“To date, the results suggest the preemptive capture exercise was justified. In spite of some losses, the captive population would have been sufficient to allow the regional population to re-establish, had the remaining wild population been lost to oil.”

A call has gone out for more support for volunteer coaches, like the ones looking after The Under 11 Mount Marlins.

Call for changes on the sideline All parents want their children to be winners – and what better place to start than on the sports field? But a lack of appreciation for sports club volunteers has prompted one coach to call for change on the sideline.

Frustrated by criticism behind his back from parents, a volunteer coach at Otumoetai Eels Rugby League Club posted an anonymous letter on the club’s Facebook page calling for more support from parents.

In the open letter, the coach said he was not angry and the positives still outweigh the negatives – but asked parents to consider the sacrifices coaches made, recognise their efforts to be fair and suggested a little help carrying the kitbag or packing up equipment would be nice.

“I just wish sometimes those who don’t choose to volunteer their time would leave the coaching to the few of us who do,” writes the coach about the regular criticism from sideline coaches.

“Maybe I’m not even that great of a coach. But I treat the kids fairly and with respect… and without me or someone like me, there’d be no team for them to play on. I’m part of this community too and it’s no picnic being out here on this stage like this.”

Eels club chairman Stan Nicholas says the lack of parent voluntary help was “definitely a problem” but believes it is no worse than when the club started eight years ago, and that all clubs have the same challenge.

Stan says the struggle to attract coaches means many are coaching two teams and the club often has to limit teams despite interest from more players.

“I’ve been in the situation where

I’ve had to coach three teams.

“Sport is about more than just winning but some people don’t see it like that, and this is part of the problem.”

Sport BOP Coachforce coaching team leader Dave Clarke says coaches receive a lot of unfair criticism when “misguided folks on the sideline just focussed on winning rather than performance and the players’ long-term development”.

Dave doesn’t believe the problem of attracting volunteer coaches and helpers is any worse now than in the past and says people still did it because they love it – with thousands of volunteers doing great things everyday.

“As much as there can be some downsides, the upsides outweigh those downsides. Generally when you talk to volunteers they are a pretty positive bunch.”

Exhibition on a place called home

A history lesson on a place Mount Maunganui residents call home starts this weekend with the opening of the Painting Mauao exhibition at Tauranga Art Gallery.

A common theme for inspiration, Mauao has been captured in paint since the earliest of European settlers and artwork dating back to the mid-19th century is among the art on show.

Painted images of Mount Maunganui from colony times right through to work which has recently dried will be on display, says exhibition director Penelope Jackson.

“The content is all images of Mauao and it’s different because we haven’t had an

“The highlight really is the cross-section of different styles through time and the different way that artists have depicted this iconic landform, whether as a subject

by itself, as a backdrop, or to be part of a narrative.” The exhibition, in gallery one, shows how the landform has changed over time, especially the amount of vegetation.

“It’s just restricted to paintings, some have drawing elements but it’s just paintings because including photographs would have simply been too much.

“The colony paintings are quite small because they were made in little sketchbooks that soldiers, for instance, use to carry around and some of the more recent works are quite large in scale.

“We’ve had a couple of paintings that have been made especially for the exhibition which is pretty exciting.”

Painting Mauao will be on display at Tauranga Art Gallery until late August.

Plenty of exciting things for the garden So much for June being a quite month for garden centres. We are pretty busy at the moment – and plenty of great things for the garden will come in during this month.

Firstly, new season roses now in stock with a great range of varieties, freshly lifted from the growers fields. The sooner they are planted the quicker the roots get going before next season’s display of beautiful blooms. Because they have just been lifted from the fields they do not have many fibrous roots (the roots are just trimmed to fit into a pot then filled with potting mix). If the plant stays in the pot for a while it will make new roots during winter inside the pot – but if they are planted straight into the garden they will make good roots into the ground, where they are to stay and have a much better start next year.

If the winter is mild they may start growth early. If this happens just prune a little and tidy the bush up in July; and spray with a copper and winter strength spraying oil mix. If you feed them at the same time and they will be off, giving you a great display during summer.

Don’t forget, it is also time to get the garlic and shallots in now – as they say – plant on the shortest day and harvest on the longest day. Any time during June is best to plant or even into July or August for later crops. Make sure the garlic you buy for planting is New Zealand-grown.

Strawberries are also available now for planting – and the sooner they are planted the better for early cropping. You could even try covering your row with a cloche or frost protection cloth to bring them on earlier. The most common variety for growing in New Zealand conditions is Pajaro because it performs well in the warmer climate.

Strawberries are also great planted in containers or hanging baskets as this helps to keep the fruit clean and easy to pick.

Also due in this month, is the start of the deciduous fruit trees.

Palmers will have a great range available, but get in early if you are looking for something special or place your order now for when they arrive.

Business confidence remaining high in North Business confidence among Northern region firms has continued to improve this quarter with a net 45 per cent of respondents believing the New Zealand business situation will improve.

“This recent survey reflects what most business owners have been telling us. There are still challenges – like demand in some sectors, obtaining finance and finding the right employees, but things are improving,” says Max. “Business owners are increasingly positive about the New Zealand economy and also about their own businesses.

“The survey findings still reflect difficulties for businesses in finding the right staff – 27 per cent indicating difficulty in finding the right people with the right skills.”

The deal that was done

In 2008, in return for the Maori Party’s coalition support, the National Party agreed to a $4 million ‘review’ of New Zealand’s constitutional arrangements. An appointed Constitutional Advisory Panel is due to make recommendations to the government later this year. Any changes will be made either by a vote in Parliament or through a binding referendum of voters.

The dangers that await

New Zealand’s constitution consists of a collection of statutes, conventions, and common law rights that together set out the basic rules by which our country is governed. With supreme law-making power held by elected Members of Parliament who can be sacked if they lose the confidence of voters, New Zealand has one of the strongest parliamentary democracies in the world. Those calling for a Treatybased constitution want to transfer that ultimate law-making power to unelected judges who are not accountable to the public.

A Treaty-based constitution

The likely outcome of this review is a proposal to place the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi in a written constitution based on biculturalism.

Te Puke commuter driven mad with slow motorists I live in Te Puke, but commute to Mt Maunganui for work Monday to Friday and I am noticing the traffic getting worse every week as more people refuse to do 100k/h outside of the SH2 work zone between Baypark corner and Domain Rd roundabout.

The amount of people Sunday driving during the week is crazy, they are making the situation much worse than it needs to be. Every night on my way home I seem to be doing 70 to 80km from the Domain Rd roundabout all the way to Te Puke, then when in the 70km zone in Te Puke people are doing 50km, then just when you finally think it’s over, they do 30km in the 50km zone.

Where are the traffic cops giving out fines to the people not doing the speed limits required outside of the roadwork zones?

And the ones having a ciggie for breakfast doing 70 - 80km from Te Puke all the way to Tauranga? And the smokers that throw ciggie butts out the window, instead of their own ash tray.

I honestly don’t know if I can wait till the SH2 roadworks are complete if this continues, it just makes my commute more stressful than it really needs to be. If you are one of these people that aren’t doing 100km p/hr etc. when required, just take a look in your rear vision mirror (that rectangular thing with glass stuck to your front windscreen) and see how quick it can backlog up from Te Puke to the SH2 roadworks and vice versa, and see the damage you are creating, as I am now starting to see some crazy overtaking as a result of this, and to be honest I don’t blame them for passing.

Seriously considering selling my house in Te Puke and moving to Tauranga because of this issue, which is a shame cause I do like it here.

Cruelty on the harbour has parallels with dolphin slaughter Annual animal cruelty on our harbour – just because it is efficient?

The annual black swan cull that took place this weekend at Blue Gum Bay has some parallels to the dolphin slaughter in Taiji, Japan, which drew worldwide condemnation when the film ‘The Cove’ was released. In both cases stressed out animals are herded into a bay and are slaughtered on mass with little chance of escape. Why are we condoning this treatment of a native bird which mates for life and can live to 29 years?

Many of the reasons given to justify the cull seem largely anecdotal. I am a harbour-side property owner with swans off shore and they have never bothered me. How many harbour-side owners have complained about crop grazing and are the complaints serious? If aviation is under threat by bird strike, does killing a small percentage of the population help much anyway, and why are the swans being herded from the Bowentown end of the harbour?

Over grazing of sea grass may well be an issue if the swan population gets out of hand, but is there sufficient evidence that the current

population is doing damage? I’d like to hear the real science behind it, see more research done. What are the population numbers of black swan that the harbour can sustain? I’d also like to hear DOC and the Regional Council being vocal about this and backing up their policy with research.

It doesn’t seem right that Fish and Game are the spokespeople, the group justifying the hunt and determining the numbers of birds shot, when their members see this as a good day’s entertainment. That is not impartial.

If research shows that swans numbers need to kept in check, are there not more humane methods of control? Fish and Game comment that “egg pricking is not suitable for the Tauranga population as swans do not breed there”. Where is the natal lake that the swans breed? Can egg pricking not be done there? Even small scale shooting of swans in the same manner as duck shooting seems preferable to the annual mass slaughter.

Teen murderer’s appeal dismissed

A Bay of Plenty teenager’s appeal against a life sentence for the murder of an Opotiki school teacher has been dismissed.

Lori-lea Te Wini, 18, was sentenced to life with a minimum non-parole period of 10 years in the High Court at Rotorua last year.

She earlier pleaded guilty to the 2008 murder of 79-year-old retired school teacher John Rowe.

The school teacher was beaten to death with his walking cane as he lay in bed in his Opotiki home.

One of two men accused of assaulting and robbing a Domino’s pizza delivery man is facing a fresh charge of robbery in relation to the incident.

The 24-year-old man was originally arrested along with a 16-year-old following the assault of a 23-year-old Domino’s worker at a Maungatapu address on May 9.

During his last appearance in court, the 24-yearold had his charges dropped, while his teenager counterpart was bailed.

The accused has been released on bail and is due back in court on July 1.

Police investigating the fatal fire in Rotorua that killed a 14-year-old girl have found no evidence the blaze was started by a molotov cocktail.

Western Heights High school student Mihinui Tamiana died in a blaze in an industrial building on Riri St on Sunday morning.

Police shut down a party at the building a few hours earlier and Mihinui was sleeping on a mezzanine floor in the building at about 2.30am when the fire started.

Detective Senior Sergeant Zane Smith says a number of other people were also injured in the fire. Police are asking anyone with information about the fire to contact their local police station.

A bad driver is facing drug charges after a complaint led police to find seven grams of methamphetamine and $40,000 cash in his car.

Rotorua man Renata Tako, 37, was stopped on State Highway 5, near the Old Waiotapu Rd, on Sunday.

Bay of Plenty Police communications manager Kim Perks says police found around seven grams of methamphetamine and $40,000 in the vehicle when they stopped it around 10.30pm.

Police also found an extendable baton in the forbidden driver’s car.

Tako was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine for supply.

Accused carjackers behind bars

One half of the Auckland pair accused of carjacking three people in the Kingsview carpark pleaded guilty in Tauranga District Court on Friday, May 31. Tepee Snow Laison pleaded guilty to one charge of robbery in relation to the alleged carjacking and assault on May 10.

The 33-year-old also pleaded guilty to unrelated charges.

Her co-accused Conrad Oscar Rewita, 30, is yet to enter a plea on the charges of robbery, drinkdriving causing injury and operating a vehicle recklessly causing injury following the incident in Durham St.The pair has been remanded in custody. Laison is due back in court on August 5, while Rewita is back on July 10.

Countering the propaganda Last week I attended the Constitutional Advisory Panel (CAP) meeting fronted only by Sir Michael Cullen. The main stated aim of CAP appears to be to entrench the Treaty of Waitangi into the NZ Constitution as supreme law.

In a robust question and answer forum, many spoke of the desire that we remain “one people.”

Sadly this will not be so if the Treaty, based on Maori tikanga, is legislated into law. It would be separatist, divisive and undemocratic and, would be almost impossible to remove once enacted.

Cullen was asked questions about the future of our country, and his many of his replies were prime examples of obfuscation and platitudes.

At a follow-up meeting to be held at Bureta Park on Monday evening June 10, I will be interested in the views of David Round, Chairman of the Independent Constitutional Review Panel which was formed to help counter the propaganda and spin being fed to us by the Government’s stacked Constitutional Advisory Panel. As a senior lecturer in law at the University of Canterbury, Mr. Round is very knowledgeable on treaty and constitutional issues and will provide an independent outlook on the current Review.

I am told that the “Twisting” book has been out for over three months and there have hardly been any complaints. With the truths it is exposing and very few fightbacks (because to fight back, is only to expose more of the truly dirty doings going on behind the scenes), this new party is the breath of fresh air we have all been waiting for.

May it swiftly turn into the blast we all need.

Time to flex numbers muscle Winston Peters addressed our ‘Grey Power AGM on 31 May. He noted that we didn’t have our usual good sized crowd which was disappointing to say the least.

In fact he gave us a talking to that this is one time when ‘Grey Power’ really should be increasing membership and flexing its muscle.

Mentioning as I did in my last letter that we pensioners are and can be the largest lobby group in NZ, 600,000 people set to reach 1 million, who can argue with that, shake of the apathy, you can do something even if it’s just pen to paper! Mr Peters gave a very informative address as he always does!

He said there is no way he thinks a written Constitution with the Treaty of Waitangi enshrined in it should happen and like the rest of us wonder why we are even discussing it for we have more pressing issues.

Ways to save power Police traumatised me, Further to my letter of two weeks ago, re power prices; Trustpower have put out a pamphlet showing how to save power 33 ways.

They do not mention three of the most important; probably don’t know about them.

1. If your pressure reducing valve is faulty, it can cost you a great deal of money. Make sure it is okay.

2. Check the vent pipe on the roof;(some systems have it out the side of the house).

If there is water coming out, or the roof is wet below the pipe, get it checked.

3. If your kitchen is more than 5m from the hot water cylinder, it may be a better option to install an under sink water heater.

With a long run from the cylinder, after you turn off the tap the water in the pipe goes cold. This also can cost you money.

Teenagers can also cost you money by having 20 minute showers. Up to you to stop them!

Smelly yellow lemons a waste How dumb can the Regional Councillors continue to be? Having wasted about $40 Million on subsidising empty buses in Tauranga so far!

I raise this issue again because of how cheap it is to run my own modern car compared to the bus fares.

For example, I pay all the fixed costs for my car no matter how far I drive it, so the extra cost is the fuel. I can drive the six kilometres from Greerton to Tauranga CBD for one dollar of fuel.

Why would I pay $3 on the bus?

In addition, in my car I have comfort, music, heating, cooling, go where and when I want, choose my company and park inside when it is raining.

Why would I go on a bus?

To local regional councillors, Cronin, Nees, Sherry, Thompson and Owens I say, face the facts! We can travel far better and cheaper in our own vehicles so stop wasting our money on Smelly Yellow Lemons.

I need compensation Today I was twice stopped by Rotorua Police, once in Pukuatua Street and again in Old Quarry Road where they instructed me to count one to five in front of some small instrument which supposedly registered my blood alchohol levels. As I don’t drink alchohol and was just going about my own business, I felt severely traumatised and stigmatised to be treated with such suspicion in public.

I now know how the people of the Ruatoria area feel and I am sure they are as traumatised as I and to follow their example, I intend to apply for and expect compensation too, just to make me feel better. I always feel better with a few extra dollars in my pocket.

I trust the authorities to take as much notice of their claims as they will of mine.

Letter lacks credence Dr Graham Cliff in his letter of May 31 firmly places his support behind the anti Maori, anti treaty propagandists in their extreme right political party. His letter like their stated policies lacks credence.

His first mistake is in the use of the word reality in order to denigrate Maori. In human relationships, debate or argument there is no such thing as reality. It is subjective and therefore varies from one person or group to another.

He goes on to claim that Maori use empty rhetoric, outright lies or spirituality to gain advantage. The first two are easily dealt with, both sides in this debate of such practice, but by sheer volume alone the group he stands with are the worst offenders. Considered denial, is the biggest lie of all.

Doctor, you have absolutely no understanding of Maori spirituality, and its significance in their culture and practice. Your ignorance, insults and bullying rhetoric do you nor your race any credit whatsoever, and are a classic example of the negative propaganda “Twisting the Treaty” is full of.

Finally you and your friends appear to believe that Maori owe you an eternal debt of gratitude. Why so? If the Brits hadn’t colonized New Zealand no doubt the French would have, hence the subterfuge of the treaty.

It is not true to say Maori are better for that process, certainly not in a spiritual sense.

“Pull back the curtains Doctor.” To dishonour a Treaty undertaken in good faith is the worst kind of dishonesty.

80) New Music, Part 1! James Blake is coming to the Auckland Town Hall on August 2, hot on the heels of a rather brilliant new album. England’s master of soulful electronica (yes Martha, such a thing does

exist!) is playing one show here and is well worth checking out. His music is unusual, building haunting near-symphonic mood pieces out of minimalist repeated lyrics and peculiar broken-down beats. Despite its initial oddness there is something hypnotically attractive.

His first, self-titled, album sounding to me a little like a guy with a vocoder and a head full of acid but his latest, Homegrown, shrugs off any incoherent tendencies to produce a thing of profound beauty and constant surprise. Check online for his lovely cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Case of You” to be converted to this unique sound.

81) New Music, Part 2! Swamp Thing have a new album out. The Bay duo, comprising guitarist Grant Haua and percussionist Michael Barker (ex-John Butler Trio) have followed their debut, Balladeer, with Primordium, recorded at Michael’s Rotorua studio. Slightly eschewing Balladeer’s stripped-back approach of just acoustic guitar and percussion, this keeps its rock factor up while delving into more radiofriendly territory. A review will be coming shortly.

82) Theatre at the cinema! The latest trend in sophisticated cinema viewing is to watch theatre. Yes, it’s a weird world. Plays and opera are now the latest attraction at

the multiplex and this weekend at Bay City Cinemas you can be transported to London’s historic Globe Theatre for two showings of Shakespeare’s Henry V. This particular production is directed by Dominic Dromgoole with the title role played by Jamie Parker (seen on-screen in The History Boys).

Meanwhile, down at The Rialto Cinema, they’ve been doing this for a while. Next week they show Francesca Da Rimini, direct from the Metropolitan Opera in New York and later in the month it’s the Met’s mammoth four-and-a-half-hour production of Gulio Cesare (there will be intermissions).

They also have a couple of plays coming from London’s National Theatre, political drama This House and the acclaimed Helen Mirren-starring The Audience.

82) Festivals, festivals, festivals! Tickets are now on sale for Gisborne’s new year festival Rhythm & Vines. They are $229 for the three day event.

The festival has been continually growing in popularity, with 29,000 people attending last year, but it seems likely to be even busier this time around after the cancellation of Whitianga’s similarly-timed bash, the Coromandel Gold Festival (which promises to return next year). Acts for Rhythm & Vines will be announced in August.

DJANGO UNCHAINED

Say what you want about Quentin Tarantino, the man knows how to make a movie. There is a certain je ne sais quoi about the films of some directors, something so assured and confident that it makes a film compulsively watchable.

Scorsese, the Coens, P T Anderson, the list goes on, but Tarantino is possibly the most engaging of the bunch.

He has been criticised a lot for making films where the only reference is other films. Films that are divorced from any real life experience.

Fair enough. But the same is true of Scorsese in his appropriations of everything from Vincente Minnelli’s showmanship to Italian neorealism, or the Coens, or Anderson who obviously has an encyclopaedic knowledge of film. But TaranSilver Linings Playbook is one of those films that might divide audiences. It’s a film about people with various mental disorders, specifically Bradley Cooper, who is – presumably – bipolar, causing all sorts of problems for his long-suffering family. He falls for Jennifer Lawrence, herself somewhat troubled. This is basically a love story, but an unusual one, buoyed along by several fantastic performances (Bob De Niro does great work as the father, naturally with his own disorders to deal with).

So it’s either a rare glance at a world we seldom see, or a cutesy exploitation of people’s problems. Whichever way, it’s pretty good.

Hamilton: In The Interests of the Nation is a Swedish/British co-production, apparently the first of a trilogy. And, despite the clumsy title, it’s stunning stuff. Hamilton is an intelligence officer, “a Swedish James Bond”, but, even with locations from Afghanistan to Jordan, Somalia to Stockholm, and a complex story of international espionage and arms smuggling, this is far from 007.

The action is unflinchingly tough and there are genuinely shocking moments. Hamilton himself is spectacularly morally compromised by inner demons, to a degree rarely seen in a “hero”. It’s a self-contained story; I can’t wait for more. (FYI: Two thirds subtitled.)

The 2004 boxing day Indian Ocean tsunami is the backdrop for The Impossible .

In Thailand it leaves a family of five scattered and trying desperately to reunite. It is strong stuff, the recreation of the tsunami simply astounding and the carnage of its aftermath heartbreaking. Both Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts are quite brilliant and totally believable (the kids are good too). And while there was the usual fuss made that the story concentrates on white tourists rather than the locals the more depressing point seems to me that this

tino is the most extreme example.

Who cares though, when you get a film as riotously entertaining as this? Just as Inglourious Basterds turned world war 2 films on their head so this both revives and redefines slave westerns, a sixties/seventies genre of western exploitation.

The dialogue is cracking, the performances arch and expert. Christophe Waltz deservedly snagged a Best Supporting Actor Oscar and he, DiCaprio (having a helluva a lot of fun), Don Johnson, Foxx, and particularly Samuel L Jackson are all terrific.

Of course it’s bloody and transgressive, as freed slave Django becomes a bounty hunter and searches for his true love, but what did you expect? Buy the ticket, take the ride.

Coining history

Paintings, vases, furniture, books, vases, coins – if you have some ‘interesting’ old objects rattling around in your home it could be time to unearth them.

Following the success of Tauranga Art Gallery’s inaugural Antiques and Treasures Roadshow last year, the gallery is giving people a second chance to have their treasures assessed again on Saturday.

Gallery director Penelope Jackson said with last year’s event an “overwhelming” success she was keen to make it an annual event.

“It was incredible how many people turned up and everyone had something unique and special. This is going to be become a

highlight of our annual calendar.”

Gallery media and programmes coordinator Katherine Hoby says there has been strong interest in the upcoming road show, which will see three experienced valuers assess items on Saturday, with 70 items registered and more expected on the day.

“There is a fantastic and fascinating variety, and it will be interesting to learn about them.”

Katherine says items could vary from being worthless to highly valuable, but she expected the big payback for most people would be learning more about their item’s background.

Tauranga woman Beverley Little will be lining up to find out more about a 800-plus year old iron coin she was given when teaching English in China 12 years ago.

Beverley Little with the Mongolian iron coin from the Sixia Dynasty 1038-1227 she is taking to Tauranga Art Gallery’s antiques roadshow.

The small iron coin – the size of a 50 cent piece with a hole in the centre – dates from the Sixia dynasty (1038-1237), but holds little meaning for Beverley.

“I’ve had it lying around, but I want to find out more about it.”

Art + Object director James Parkinson is hoping to unearth some treasures like last year, when they saw hundreds of pieces – including a collection of photographs and signed documents by Winston Churchill.

“You never know what you might find so these events are always both good fun and a real treasure hunt.”

Junior sevens run sharp and swift The battle for bragging rights is on again among Bay of Plenty’s junior rugby sevens teams this Sunday, after a three year absence.

Tournament coordinator Sefton Ingham says it is set to be a great festival of rugby with an appearance

by Tauranga’s All Blacks Sevens coach Sir Gordon Tietjens expected to be among the highlights.

“Sir Gordon’s going to give out the prizes and he said he might even do some refereeing.”

The Tauranga Sports Junior Rugby Club’s Sevens Tournament will see 450 players battling it out at Tauranga and Wharepai Domain, with teams coming from as far Whakatane and Rotorua to take part in the club’s seventh tournament.

Sefton says it is great to be running the tournament after a series of cancellations and believes the 45 teams taking part is an ideal number.

There was interest from another eight teams in taking part but their late applications had been turned away. Sefton says while they had 50 teams take part in the tournament previously, it made the day very long for the young players and numbers were limited with the establishment of two soccer fields on Wharepai Domain.

“Every team has to play at least four games before the finals so it can become quite a long day.”

Teams will compete in all junior age-groups from Under-six up to Under-13, with the first games at 9am.

The tournaments have been cancelled the last three years due to bad weather in 2010, the Fijian team training at the Domain during the RWC in 2011 and lack of numbers in 2012 (with only 22 registered).

The tournament will be postponed until next Sunday (June 16) if it rains.

Jesus says in John 14:6, “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life.

No one comes to the Father except through Me”. He is also called the Prince of Peace in Isaiah 6:9.

In troubled times, in situations where we cannot see a way through, when life itself is overwhelming or as the expression goes, “we don't know which way is up”, our hope is in a Person - the Lord Jesus Christ, the second Person of the Holy Trinity. Our own efforts, and the ways of this world, to find peace, meaning and direction stand as nothing alongside that which is found in the One, who is the Way, and the Truth, and the Life.

We live in times that Jesus speaks about in Luke 21:26 when “men's hearts will fail them for fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world”. But in the midst of it all stands the One, who is the Prince of Peace, for those who have come to God through Him. He is the One who gives peace to His own – not the peace that this fallen world offers but His Peace, which passes all understanding (John 14:27).

As the Way, Jesus leads us in His paths. He is the Good Shepherd. As the Truth, He leads us in truth and in righteousness. As the Life, He

is both the source and the direction of our lives, if we have come to salvation through Him. There is no other way to God than through Jesus. Our good works, our best efforts, our own righteousness is insufficient. Jesus is the only way and salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

If you are troubled, anxious, fearful, lost or dismayed, find a bible-believing church that preaches a gospel of repentance and ask them to introduce you to Jesus, the Way, the Truth and the Life. You will never be the same again. By Peter Whitcombe

Addressing the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff We’ve heard a bit lately about giving kids a good breakfast at school.

We know how important it is to start the day well fed – it’s not just a brawn thing, it applies to the brain as well. So, this concept is an admirable one.

We want our kids to be in the best state of mind to be able to learn and grow, and to become well balanced citizens in later life.

One can’t help thinking though, as good as this is, is it not just the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff? Of course we must have the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff, otherwise many would be in pretty bad shape. We must do what

we can to those, who for whatever reasons, have fallen over the edge of that cliff.

We now ask the obvious? Why are our kids turning up at school hungry? I never did.

A friend of mine (not here) runs courses largely government-funded, about Life 101. Candidates on this course learn the basics of life including personal hygiene, preparing a basic meal

and budgeting. They found that candidates thought doing the washing meant putting the clothes in the bath with some water and stomping on them.

They had no idea about planning, shopping for, preparing and cooking an absolutely basic but good wholesome nutritious and proteinfilled meal. They had no concept of prioritising finances, and that things like the latest television and game programme is a lesser priority than the food for the week. It was no surprise that the children from homes such as these turn up at school starving.

It seems the things we used to learn from our parents, often our mother or grandmother, are not being learned these days.

Basic life skills that set one up to be able to live and be a good citizen and contribute to society rather than be a drain on it. Perhaps we as a society (which by the way includes the church) need to look at ways in which these skills can be passed to a young generation.

Because as they say, prevention is better than cure (and it usually costs less too).

Jacquie Pullinger coming to Tauranga We shall never forget our visit to the Walled City in Hong Kong.

There, among the rat-infested alleyways, water dripped down from above the illegally-erected electric wires. Out of this seeming den of poverty and corruption, came children in immaculatelyironed school uniforms. The contrast was amazing.

But many years earlier a young English woman called Jackie Pullinger, too young and unqualified to join a missionary society, asked God what to do with her life. “Go” he replied. And he repeated this whenever she asked. On the advice of a minister, she took the cheapest ship she could find, calling in at the greatest number of countries, and prayed that she would know when to get off.

It was into the den of hopelessness and despair that she came, totally unaware of how God would transform her life – and through her – the face of Hong Kong’s Walled City.

Jackie reminds us that God’s heart is towards the poor, oppressed and down-trodden. She also reminds us that the City of God is a present as well as a future reality; and that reflections of it can be established even in a place like Kowloon’s Walled City.

On the June 14 and 15, Jackie will be speaking at Holy Trinity on ‘Pursuing the Journey with Jesus and the Holy Spirit’. You are most welcome to attend this seminar.

Enduring Power of Attorney week Law firms, the Public Trust and trustee companies will be taking part in a campaign starting on June 14 to encourage people to have Enduring Powers of Attorney. The campaign has been organised by Age Concern Tauranga.

There is a good understanding of the need to have a will, but not everyone is aware of the very real problems that exist if someone

loses the capacity to manage their personal or financial affairs through illness or injury – and there is no one appointed to do those things for them.

There a number of decisions to be made before Enduring Powers of Attorney can be signed, such as who is to be appointed; what, if any limits are to be put on their powers; and what obligations will they have

to consult with or report to other family members.

The law firms and trustee organisations taking part in the campaign are available to provide advice and assistance on all questions relating to Enduring Powers of Attorney.
