Cone-aggeddon is upon us Repent now, ye sinners wearing grey and beige The coneheads are winning. We are brow-beaten by nonsense PC over-zealous protectionism and de-sensitised to danger.

The do gooders are so pedantic about warning us of danger, we are in danger of becoming oblivious to it.

Men and women in fluoro vests running around marking the hazards of life, an obssession which has become the priority to actually FIXING the original problem.

Road cones, a prime example. They once were for serious threats to our

health and safety – such as marking the edge of the earth where the ships fell off. Now they are everywhere.

Driving to work this week we spotted a vehicle off the side of the road, apparently broken down. It had three road cones around it.

Now it’s pretty clear that the car is stopped on the side of

the road. A clue: It is stationary, at the roadside.

The average bear can figure out that it is stopped, it’s not on the road.

Therefore: drive past it. Common sense tells you that it’s not a good idea to drive into the back of it. If you are holding your lane, there’s no chance of that anyway.

But no. Someone is out to protect

It’s a cop out. There are so many road cones these days that I wonder if they are breeding. Having filthy dirty little roadside cone sex and popping out more litters of pointy-headed orange annoyances to further clutter up our streets. Perhaps we should start slipping condoms on them to stem the invasion.

The de-sensitizing to fluoro colours doesn’t stop with road markings.

Now every man and his dog literally are striding out in blinding yellow or orange. Yes, even the mutts have been emblazoned with eyeball-numbing technicolour, plus reflective strips, for their own safety.

Once, if you saw a fluoro torso on the road, it meant something. A policeman or maybe a roadworker. You’d take caution, slow down, respond to the message. Not now. These days it’s just Fido and Doris taking a dump in the park.

It’s a wonder the turds aren’t coming out glowing and flashing LED lights.

Even kayakers are bullied into thinking they need to bob around the ocean with ridiculous bicycle flags on top. Soon it will be their fault if they haven’t displayed the correct flag and are run over by a Riviera. Idiotic bureaucracy gone completely bonkers.

Back in the good old days, someone would have TOWED IT AWAY. Not these days. Put some road cones around it, for who knows how long.

Still there

Going to work the next day, the heap and its bloody road cones were still there. The answer should be: have the problem dealt with.

Any numbskull can see there’s a problem.

Another road, another day, a string of road cones at the kerbside. No hazard in sight. I thought it was maybe a convention of sunburnt witches.

Turns out, it was the tiniest patch of loose metal. Ooooh, be careful! In reality, you’d be more under threat of tripping or driving over a friggin road cone than coming unstuck on the tiny patch of stray chips.

Sense slip sliding

Along Station Road, there’s a massive slip.

Every time it rains, a bit of the cliff falls across the road, sometimes into the river. What do we do? Nothing. The slip keeps slipping.

But there’s road cones. Aren’t we robbed of taxes and rates and road taxes and fuel charges to PAY for dangerous slips to be fixed? A road cone is not a fix.

We’re being hounded by excessive safety tripe, into a state of lobotomised conformity. Soon you won’t be able to climb a tree without filling out the hazard form, signing an injury disclaimer exonerating the tree owner or occupier from culpability and agreeing to wear a safety harness, plus install the undersides of the tree with a safety net and landing pad. The tree will also be required to have aircraft warning lights on the top.

And don’t think you’ll be allowed in that tree without an orange tree climbing vest.

It will reach the point when road cones will have road cones ahead of them, warning of the road cones to follow.

Warning bells

No-one will be let out of their house, not even to their letterbox to get The Weekend Sun, without being appropriately adorned in flashing lights and warning bells.

The streets will be so full of glowing, gleaming people dodging the road cones, that the safest ones will be those in black and grey – because they’ll be the only ones left standing out in the crowd.

Here at RR we are striking back. A plan so ridiculous it thumbs its nose at the fluoro conehead brigade.

‘Destruction’ questioned Tauranga City Council stands accused of vandalism over its destruction of Coronation Park’s roadside bund and trees.

Resident Frances Tonkin was shocked when she first saw the damage.

“If I had money I would take civil action against them for vandalism and destruction of public property,” says Frances. “If I had known how to do it, I would have got an injunction through. But by the next day, they had cut the tree down.”

From a ratepayer’s point of view Coronation Park is not just a bit of land, says Frances, who was running round on that piece of land as soon as she could walk.

TCC’s budget for the bund removal and tree clearance is $40,000, according to Frances.

Trees are hugely valuable assets,

she says, and the value of the Coronation Park trees has not been included in the planning.

“There was a huge gum, planted 1980 at least, and other trees. This is asset value that has been ripped out, down to ground level.

“It’s an asset to the city and it’s got nothing to do with the council, or the people who work there now.”

TCC parks coordinator Pete Mouldey says the space has been opened up for events, since the bowling clubs moved to Mount Greens at Blake Park.

“We are slowly working towards an ideal layout according to the reserve’s concept plan, which will help make the space even more

event-friendly,” says Pete.

Most development features will require significant investment which is not yet budgeted for, but in the meantime the broad intentions of each block of work are: to create a multi-use space and to improve visibility into the reserve.

“We intend to have this section of work complete in time for the ground to recover by Labour Weekend,” says Pete. “An event called ‘Wheels on Mainstreet’ has been booked to take up the entire park on October 26.”

Drawing unity through art A touch of spray paint and artistic flair is set to unite the Greerton community for generations to come following Owen Dippie’s latest inspirational mural masterpiece.

The young aerosol artist spent part of this week spraying his way through a number of shades of grey on the side of a Greerton Village School classroom to promote the message that, despite differences in race and ethnicity, everyone can be united.

Inspired by a similar picture hanging on the wall of the school office, Owen used 30 cans of paint to create the five intertwined hands, which the school and community can now enjoy.

“The overall feeling of the mural is about unity and how we are all different, but all the same,” says Owen.

“It’s not one or the other [a person’s colour], it’s slightly different but all the same. Instead of using colour I used grey because it shows the difference between us but connects us because we are all the same.”

The driving force behind the mural is the school’s papatuanuku team leader Mike McKee who got Owen onboard with the idea.

Without a sole theme or meaning, it is up to individual to interpret their personal meanings on unity and community spirit, says Owen.

Greerton Village School principal Anne Mackintosh is rapt with the final product and blown away by Owen’s “sublime” handiwork.

“We are just absolutely rapt and we have chosen the unification of our school where everyone is united; all colours and ethnicities.”

Proudly displayed on the side of Room 7 the greyscale mural can now be viewed by not only the children but the rest of the community and pedestrians.

Residents riled at camper plan A group of upset Mount Maunganui residents are planning to rally Tauranga City Council in protest of its freedom camping bylaw.

On September 16 about 40 residents are expected at the city council meeting in an effort to push councillors into re-thinking the bylaw allowing campers to park on Marine Parade east of Banks Avenue.

A partial ban will prohibit campers from Banks Avenue to Mauao from December 1 to February 8.

Mount-Papamoa council candidate and current Deputy Mayor David Stewart approached The Weekend Sun saying he has been inundated with calls and emails from residents stunned by council’s decision to allow freedom camping from Banks Avenue towards Oceanbeach Road.

“They feel council is out of touch and simply not listening to their concerns.

Having been asked to make written submissions to the proposal and give verbal presentations to the council, the council has just ignored them and failed to address their concerns.”

TCC’s freedom camping bylaw will allow self-contained campers in certain areas. Campers are only permitted in a legal car space or reserve in any one street for no more than two nights per calendar month. David says some resi-

dents along the strip of Marine Parade are concerned about the visual impact, safety of cyclists, pedestrians and road users and the availability of car spaces during summer.

In an effort to raise awareness, David, who lives in the area where freedom camping has been banned, has delivered more than 200 letters.

“It’s fair to say that they are not at all happy about this bylaw - I think we can expect a big turn-out of very angry Mounties in the council chamber come Monday 16 September.”

As she closes the door on 21 years of volunteering at Tauranga Foodbank, Helen Trapski says her team’s dedication to helping those in need in the community kept her keen.

Originally from Tauranga, Helen moved to Wellington where she worked at the Home of Compassion – where her love for helping the community began.

In 1991, Helen returned to Tauranga eager to continue her volunteer work, found the

Tauranga Foodbank and has been volunteering there ever since.

She became a Foodbank trustee 15 years ago – and is always amazed at the generosity of the community.

“The constant supply of food and monetary donations that comes is amazing.

“That’s what has been a constant amazement. Otherwise, we wouldn’t exist. People just keep giving.”

Helen says the foodbank team’s determination to help those in need in the community has kept her volunteering for so long.

“It is a team effort. It’s the friendships that you form that make it work.

“There is need out there and if you can make a little difference in someone’s life that’s what makes it so rewarding.”

The job ensures Helen always has a smile on her face. “You need to, in the hope your smile rubs off on some of the sad faces that come in for help.

“It really points out that there is a need. People are constantly in need of help – sometimes through no cause of their own.”

Labour candidates’ Tauranga plans

The three men competing to become the Labour Party’s next frontman each have their own leading ideas about how to help Tauranga grow into the future. SunLive spoke to David Cunliffe, Shane Jones and Grant Robertson at The Wesley Centre where more than 100 of Tauranga’s Labour Party members gathered to hear from the potential leaders. While it’s clear all three men agree the first course of action needs to be unifying and strengthening a “broken” Labour Party – when asked what they will do for Tauranga they have differing ideas.

Stroke victim robbed of iPad

A Tauranga rest home resident has had his only form of communication taken away after his iPad was stolen from his mobility scooter.

Aspen Lodge resident Alan Coombes’ iPad was taken from a satchel in his mobility scooter while he visited the Food Plus Superette about 10.30am on Monday. Three years ago Alan had a stroke and as a result cannot speak.

Aspen Rest Home facility manager Olwyn Kunz says the 67-year-old’s family put together some money to buy him an iPad, which she says is his only form of communicating.

Benefit fraudster avoids jail

A Tauranga shop assistant who defrauded Work and Income of more than $12,000 in benefits has avoided jail. Lasal Hinemoa Patsy Huriwai, 26, was sentenced to 120 hours community service in Tauranga District Court after being convicted of one charge of obtaining by deception through the Domestic Purposes Benefit.

In the 10 months from April 2012 Huriwai claimed a total of $12,478 in overpayments from the Domestic Purposes Benefit while also working fulltime at the Big Bake Bakery.

City urged to change tree rules

A former Tauranga City councillor is disputing a suggestion to remove and replace the city’s silver birch trees, saying the committee responsible should be abolished. The tree management subcommittee is requesting the city’s tree management policy be amended to classify silver birches as an ‘inappropriate street tree’ and recommends TCC actively removes and replaces them. Silver birches make up 28 per cent of tree felling requests and petitions submitted to council and the subcommittee’s proposal is aimed at reducing the issue.

There are 748 silver birch trees on Tauranga road verges and 146 in reserves, making up three per cent of the city’s street trees. Removing them is estimated to cost $387,841.

Constable gets stuck in For a couple of hours every week Community Constable Erin Senior will shed the handcuffs and stern persona, instead offering support and guidance for the Arataki community.

The new Community Constable is keen to make an instant impression in the two-year position by getting out there and meeting the community.

Just like her predecessor (Rachel Walker) for the last five years, Erin is hosting weekly drop-in sessions for people to come forward and have the confidence to share any concerns or problems.

“They can come and talk about anything – and that’s what we want to make crystal clear.

“Maybe people in the community might not have access to

a vehicle, or might feel uncomfortable to come to the police station. It’s just an option for the community that’s there, and it’s in a neutral environment.”

Working out of the community centre from 10am to midday every Wednesday from this week, the sessions have somewhat flown under the radar recently, admits Erin. “It’s just a case of getting it out there so people are aware of it.”

Arataki Community Advisory Group spokesperson Marie Gilpen says since being appointed, Erin has been great figure for the community centre.

“That’s the whole beauty of this Community Constable thing. They are proactive, they are not reactive.

“They are all about building relationships with the community, as most police are reacting to crime which has been reactive.” ACAG also hosted their recent community meeting to

encourage new members to join the advisory group and shape the future of the community.

Te Puke man found not guilty

Te Puke man Gucharan Singh has been found not guilty on all four charges relating to the stabbing of three men last year.

After an eight day trial a jury of 11 people took four hours to deliver the not guilty verdict on Wednesday. The 37-year-old Indian national had denied one count of common assault, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and two counts of wounding with reckless disregard.

During the trial the defence argued that Singh had acted in self-defence when confronted by his ex-flatmate during a heated argument at a house the pair were living in at Te Puke.

Group chairman Charles Harrison says it was great to launch the weekend evening patrols after being delayed by a series of health issues affecting his family.

Tauranga community constable Matt Elliot says the patrollers’ eyes and ears led to an arrest for breach of bail.

“The police can’t be out and about everywhere, so the support from community patrol members can be a real help.” Charles says it was a “fantastic start” for the group, which will be initially patrolling twice a week, but hopes to increase the patrols once they have attracted more members.

“We would love to have another 10 to 15 people involved. That would be really helpful, because we only want people to go out a maximum of once a month.”

Charles says the patrol times will be varied to ensure they are not predictable.

The Bethlehem patrol has been setup to help improve overall safety and is not in response to any specific need.

Iron in the fire

After making a name as a national representative marathon runner, it was no surprise to anyone who knew Craig Kirkwood when he got into ironman events.

Not one for lounging around on the couch or taking things easy, five years ago Craig set his eyes on competing in an ironman event. With his first Ironman New Zealand event – a marathon run (42.2km), 180km cycle and 3.8km swim – under his belt in 2009, he immediately stepped it up a notch and turned his focus to competing in Hawaii a few months later.

He describes the ironman triathlon at Kona – dubbed the Ironman World Championships for the fierce challenge it presents – “as a big steep learning curve”.

“I did a few things that I wouldn’t do again or I’d do that I didn’t last time, especially around nutrition. I spent too much time trying to keep myself cool and not enough in trying to get food into myself,” recalls Craig, alluding to unfinished business motivating him to head back to Hawaii next month.

“I wanted to go back and to make amends for 2009 and not having such a great day.”

Craig, who competed in the marathon at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, is disappointed with his time of nine hours 51 minutes at Kona, and aims to shave 30 minutes off.

“It would be awesome to be able to have a podium finish – that will probably take about nine hours 20 minutes to get on the podium – I think if I have a good go that would be achievable. But I would also like to be the first Kiwi home.”

Since last competing in Kona he has competed in other ironman events, saying he has learned how to handle the distance better.

“You have to be a bit more wary of the distance and the discipline. It’s a long way to be out there; and if you not are respecting it and gauging your efforts then you will pay for it come the later stages of the race.”

Craig has been pouring an average of 15-18 hours a week into training during recent months.

“That’s long, weekend rides of six or seven hours on the bike, and long twothree hour runs getting up at 5am.

“There are certainly big sacrifices.”

Top notch bowling Papamoa Bowling Club is hoping a newly installed tinge of green will sweep bowlers off their feet ahead of the open day this Sunday.

Following final touches to the club and installation of a new green two months ago, the club is now set to offer top notch bowling facilities.

“We want people who live in Papamoa and who want to play bowls to play in Papamoa rather than going to other clubs,” says club committee

member Don Davis.

With the help of Tauranga City Council, TECT and the Lion Foundation the bowling club has refurbished their clubrooms along with replacing their turf with a new Supergreen 2 in July – the final piece of the club’s new look.

Based at Gordon Spratt Reserve, the club currently has 80 members and owns the clubhouse along with maintaining the green and surrounds.

In 2009 the club opened new clubrooms after previously using the existing sports club building for all its activities, until the rooms were taken over by council, resulting in the various sports clubs having to share a smaller space.

In August 2009, the Mount Bowling Club gave the Papamoa club an old building previously used by its female members.

“There has been a lot of voluntary work by enthusiastic members so we now have something to be proud of,” says Don. “The club has achieved this without going into debt.”

Sunday’s open days sees speeches from Deputy Mayor David Stewart along with Papamoa Bowling Club members followed by the weekly roll up and an afternoon tea.

Tracy’s hope expedition nears With two weeks left until she begins her expedition of hope, child cancer survivor Tracy Pepper is making one final attempt to gain funds for her trip.

After deciding to climb Mt Kilimanjaro to raise awareness of ovarian cancer back in January, Tracy is still $9000 short of her funding goal.

While she’s not letting it worry her – she hopes last minute revenue will come from a series of charity auctions on Trade Me this weekend.

The items, donated by various businesses and individuals, include an autographed All Black Sevens rugby ball, a sea kayak from Seahorse Kontikis, a group styling session, a diamond ring, and a Harley Davidson ride.

“I put the items on for half the value of what they are worth…if people are generous and bid on the value of the item, then it’s sweet.

“The biggest thing is funding…but I’m not going to worry about that. I can take out a loan and deal with it when I get back if I have to.”

Tracy, now 40, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at 10 years old, and became one of the first to trial chemotherapy.

She is the only child, from 20 diagnosed with the same tumour, to survive – and this year decided to climb Mt Kilimanjaro as an ‘Expedition of Hope’.

Tracy will travel to Africa in two weeks, and make the climb from September 23-29. Whenever a salty seadog gives Ken Fox a gybe about not being a real sailor, he replies to the taunt by passing them the radio controller.

“We hand them the transmitter and tell them to sail the boat.

That usually stops them.”

It usually quietens down the radio sailing detractors, as they learn how to control sail and rudder direction from shore by remote control.

Ken, who took up the hobby 21 years ago, came from a background of centreboard and coastal keeler sailing – having learned how to master Z class and Idle Along class boats in his teens.

Since then the hobby has grown in popularity, with Ken – now

the Tauranga Radio Sailing Club Commodore – often among a group of 20 sailors racing from The Lakes shore.

Next weekend (September 14-15) the club will host the Bay of Plenty regional championships, with competitors expected from Auckland and around the central North Island, in what Ken says will be a practice run for the four-day national championships which will be hosted at The Lakes next May. Like all sailing enthusiasts, Ken has been following the drama of the America’s Cup buildup closely – saying the atmosphere at Tauriko is more relaxed with the stringent rules of the International One Metre class ensuring competitors are all racing similar kit, avoiding appeals or challenges.

“The sails are measured before an event and the hulls weighed.

If they are too light they have to carry extra weight.”

Like his many radio yacht sailing mates Ken is passionate about racing his one metre models, saying it is lots of fun, is easier on the body and offers the thrill of competing in many more races in the same time than traditional yachting.

“We got through 18 races last Saturday, so it’s a pretty quick turnaround,” says Ken, who also loves competing up-close alongside other sailors on the shoreline, which makes it more exciting than being in distant boats.

These days Ken has a choice of three boats to sail which he is pretty happy with, but he occasionally starts dreaming about other boat designs.

Students at Greenpark School have nearly raised $850 so far in their on-going fundraising efforts to help the lives and education of children in rural Cambodia.

Year 4 students at Greenpark School are raising funds to help their Cambodian counterparts by selling ‘Feather Flyers’ which are made in the country in Southeast Asia.

As result, feather flyers, which are used like hacky sacks, is a new craze sweeping the school, says Greenpark senior teacher Ben Brock.

“They are being sold for $4 each and so far $850 has been raised.”

The fundraising venture is following a school visit from Denise Arnold, from The Cambodia Charitable Trust, who told students about the plight of children in Cambodia.

“Very few children are able to go to school in the rural areas of Cambodia,” Denise told Greenpark students during her visit.

“The children either have to stay at home and help the family or they cannot afford the uniform and stationary needed to attend school.”

The Cambodia Charitable Trust has built and started eight primary schools in rural Cambodia. In

some schools, there are 90-100 students in each class and the children have very few resources.

Ben says his students are also organising a garage sale of old toys, books and games.

“They are also planning a car wash, fruit selling, and raffles for later in the year.”

Students are also in the process of writing letters to companies in New Zealand which may want to help financially or donate a prize for the raffle.

“We are trying to raise as much as possible before the end of October,” says Ben. “Denise is going to Cambodia in November and we want to give her the funds we have raised, so she can make a dif-

ference to these children’s lives.”

Ben says while in Cambodia, Denise is going to make a short film which will be shown to Greenpark students on her return, so they can see how their fundraising has been spent.

“We have already received help from the Tauranga Hearing Association which has donated 20 second-hand hearing aids,” says Ben. Triathlon Tauranga president Paul Miller says the monthly winter duathlons give multi-sports competitors something to train for during the off-season – with the new children’s event launched this year proving popular.

“It’s popular, particularly with children of parents who are competing. It’s a great chance for anyone to get involved and have a go.”

The duathlon events are open to anyone on Sunday, September 15 (9am registration). The children’s event is a 500m run, 7km cycle, then another 500m run. For Maanauri – it’s the beginning of a long-term goal to become the best in New Zealand. Involved in the sport for two years, he says the competition element is his favourite part. Mahinarangi has been training since she was five and loves “everything” about the sport.

Taekwondo is one of the newer sports available for youngsters to get into and is growing quickly at all levels since being introduced at the 1988 Olympic Games as a demonstration sport, says Moana. Planting preparations for Elms’ lead role Preparations for The Elms Historic Mission House’s lead role in the 150-year commemoration of Maori victory at the Battle of Gate Pa are underway.

A team of volunteers are bringing the gardens up to scratch for the occasion, using plants donated by Palmers Bethlehem.

“The plants themselves are donated by our suppliers,” says Palmers gardener Jenny Harvey.

“We approached a few growers that supply us to see if they could supply a few plants that were not up to saleable quality.”

Two of Palmers’ growers in the Waikato were able to supply about 250 plants, mainly perennials, which with “a little TLC” from The Elms volunteers will improve the historic gardens for the commemorations.

Perennials, hydrangeas and michaelas planted on Monday will give the mission house gardens a similar appearance to the way they

looked 150 years ago, says Jenny.

“This area was cottage garden before.”

Currently, Battle of Gate Pa commemoration plans involving The Elms include hosting a fancy dress party – a period costume gathering at the Mission House – with a possible vice-regal afternoon tea.

little earlier than normal with the warm temperatures. The idea is to kill the plants before they flower and produce the seed, as it is the seed which has the prickle. For good control, spray early September and again in late October – this should keep the lawn free of the prickles.

It is also time to think about purchasing your seed potatoes, as most varieties are now available. Early varieties take about 60-80 days from planting to digging, so if you want to grow some new potatoes for Christmas dinner they need to be planted by early October. You need to get them well chitted (sprouted) before planting , as this can take up to four weeks. So now is the time.

Spring fever in the garden The weather has been very kind to us this winter and plants in the garden are growing faster than usual, even the weeds.

It is time to prepare the ground for planting, especially in the vegetable garden. Plant spring vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, lettuces, spring onions and spinach; and sow beetroot and pea seeds direct into the garden.

Firstly, give the ground a good deep dig over, incorporating plenty of organic matter such as good quality compost or better still a covering of farm yard manure. Make sure that the ground is not too wet when you dig it, as this can spoil the soil structure with compaction. If you have raised beds or containers for your vegetables top them up with a good mix such as Tui vegetable mix and you will be ready to start planting as soon as the weather is suitable.

August was Bee Aware Month and it is very important for the best results in your garden that you keep encouraging bees. A great plant

to attract the bees is lavender, so plant some now around the vegetable garden. The more flowering plants that you can grow alongside your vegetables, the better the pollination, and therefore the better your crops.

Former All Black takes a stand A former New Zealand All Black who has teamed up with Tauranga SPCA in taking a stand against animal violence is visiting the Bay with the inspiring message next week.

On Tuesday, Tauranga SPCA is hosting an inspiring evening where Norm Hewitt is presenting the awareness programme called ‘One of the Family’.

Highlighting the link between animal cruelty and human violence, the initiative, launched in 2007, is today run in schools nationwide.

Tauranga SPCA community liaison Becks Chambers says the SPCA believes educating children to empathise with animals is the most effective way to teach children to empathise with each other.

She is excited the community will get the chance to hear Norm’s inspirational message, and school students will get a chance to soak up the former All Blacks’ advice during two days as well.

“It’s really inspiring. It’s all about respect for life and building empathy for not just humans but animals too.

“It focuses on life skills and behavior. The basis is around having your animals as part of the family.”

Norm will be visiting Katikati College, Mount Intermediate, Tauranga Intermediate and Otumoetai Intermediate this Tuesday and Wednesday (September 10-11) to promote the ‘One of the Family’ message.

On Tuesday, he’ll deliver his ‘One of the Family’ presentation at the Historic Village Hall from 6pm. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for students and are available at Greerton SPCA shelter. All proceeds to Tauranga SPCA.

In case of a emergency If you are worried about your pet’s health, ring your vet clinic.

If it is outside clinic hours, you will be given the contact number for the vet available.

If your pet is having a seizure, ensure they can’t hurt themselves by falling.

Protect yourself, and other pets, from being bitten and record how long the seizure lasts.

Don’t try and rouse them from a seizure and don’t worry about the tongue – they will not swallow it. If it is a tiny dog, rub a little glucose on the gums.

If they have been stung by a bee, try and remove the stinger with a credit card or tweezers and apply

a cold pack. They may need medication to prevent severe swelling and itching.

If they have been impaled, do not remove the foreign object. Immobilise the animal, cut the object short if easily done and pad around the object.

If they have eaten poison, bring them to the clinic as soon as possible, even if not showing any symptoms, as we may be able to prevent absorption. Also bring the poison’s packaging.

If burned, apply cool wet cloths, not butter or ointment.

If overheated, cool with wet towels and fans – do not use ice.

If the animal is unable to stand, bring them in a carry-cage, on a large blanket or strapped to a firm board.

You may need to tie tape around a dogs muzzle to prevent them biting if they are scared and in pain. We have first aid kits available at the vet clinic.

Fresh hare and exercise There’s nothing like a bit of fresh hare and exercise, my gran always says.

Or was that air? Anyway, the newshounds have been getting their share of both lately, hot on the heels of a variety of furry parasites, which were brought into the world for us to chase to the ends of the earth.

This week I chased one beyond the end of the earth and fell off the edge.

The adventure started with a trip to the bush to re-set the possum traps, bait up the ferret and stoat stations, and give the rats, hares and pigs a hard time.

Fresh from my victory over a hare recently, I was feeling quite plucky about nailing anything on four legs.

We hadn’t been to the bush for a couple of months, so the critters were getting pretty blasé and taking extreme liberties – such as ransacking the cabin, pooping on the deck, chewing at the outdoor furniture and generally making pesty nuisances of themselves.

So I was highly amped by nightfall when Ruger came out for a walk with his spotlight on. I trotted patiently alongside the boss and Ruger as we descended deeper and darker into the wildlands.

Then the boss said, “Flo, you go find a possum. Sniff it out with your nose!”

What a good idea, I thought. So I tore off faster than Quade Cooper at a Robbie Deans fanclub meeting, with my radar nose

on high alert. Sure enough, a whiff of dastardly possum wafted down the valley. I followed it all the way to a base of a tree overhanging the harbour.

Woof, woof, gurr-woof. (Translation: Possums at 12 o’clock, Boss).

In no time the boss was there (seemed to be puffing a bit?) and Ruger let out a couple of double taps – and blow me down, if two possums fell out of the tree!

I dispatched the first in record time, cos I had to move onto his sidekick. There was a short chase and the rest, well at least the possum, was history.

Then followed a loud splash, as the varmint fell into the tide.

Without even thinking, this newshound launched off into oblivion in hot pursuit.

The boss was calling out to leave it, but being a faithful retriever, the job’s not done till the goods are delivered.

So after swimming half way to Argentina and back, with a furball the size of a wet horse blanket in tow, one bedraggled newshound staggered ashore a mile down the coast with victim number two.

“Good work”, said the boss. “Let’s go home and get dry.”

That was a satisfying night out. And drying myself on his sleeping bag was a bonus!

Doggy issue: over-excited welcome Q. How do I stop my dog being so excited when I get home? I understand he is very excited to see me, but he goes crazy. Barking madly etc., I try to ignore him and praise when he stops.

A. Firstly – the difficult part – on returning home, instruct your dog to sit, and delay greeting the dog until he does.

Calmly praise and greet your dog with gentle stroking once he has.

This means a sit must have already been trained and proofed in many different locations – including

by the front door – until it is reliable.

When using it in the greeting don’t be tempted to repeat the command, for example, “sit”, “sit”, “sit”. This will only add to the excitement.

Secondly – in proofing your sit with the front door, exit out the back door and enter in the front door, using your sit command upon entering.

Make this a regular training session when you are at home, until your dog is conditioned to sit upon you entering the front door.

These training sessions are about five minutes long, once or twice a day.

Remember, in all interactions with your dog, greet and give affection at

his level, to discourage jumping up.

Gear for guys up for grabs Tools, fishing and outdoor gear, sports equipment and tents – a whole stash of toys for boys is on offer at Waipuna Hospice shops this weekend.

In an effort to show Tauranga’s male population that the charity’s hospice stores are not just for women, hospice shops in Fraser St and Mount Maunganui are hosting a ‘Gear for Guys’ weekend this Saturday and Sunday.

The Hospice depot has been stockpiling items ‘geared at guys’ for weeks, collecting a wide range of items, including white bait nets, sporting gear and top quality tools – not to mention clothing, books and boys’ toys – all at affordable prices.

Waipuna Hospice fundraising manager Trish Rae says this is a great opportunity for men to grab a bargain – and she hopes the weekend will highlight the many male-targeted items the stores stock.

“It was an initiative by our Fraser St manager who noticed customers at the hospice shops are mainly women, so she began thinking

about how we could get more men into the shops.

She started talking about toys for boys, which we modified to Gear for Guys.

“With the advent of spring, it’s a really good time to do

a drive to attract some more blokes.”

Trish is keen for local men to realise the stores offer more than just clothing and home wares.

“We have a huge range of other stuff – so this promotion will highlight the truly wonderful things people donate for us to sell.

“Affordable and good quality, that’s what people are looking for these days – especially when they’re trying to stretch their dollar a little further.”

Insights into avocado industry with world leading experts Avocado growers can learn from some of the world’s leading experts next week when the fifth Quadrennial New Zealand and Australian Avocado Growers’ Conference comes to Tauranga.

Ashby Whitehead is encouraging avocado growers to attend next week’s meeting.

New Zealand Avocado Growers’ Association chairman Ashby Whitehead says the conference, held every four years, is an important chance for growers to learn more about the industry –New Zealand’s third largest fresh fruit export. The conference theme is nutritional values.

“The aim is to up-skill our growers and aid them in producing high quality fruit. It is a learning experience and also a great opportunity to network with other growers who have common issues and differing management techniques.

“If you want to learn about mitigating irregular bearing, the benefits of new rootstocks and ideas for improving productivity then come along and pick up some knowledge that could help improve your business.”

Fifty experts from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and USA will present advanced thinking on pruning techniques, irregular bearing, disease management, new cultivars,

nutrient management, pollination, quality improvement, new market development, promotions, economics, biosecurity, and supply chain improvement. Sessions are divided into three topic streams: marketing nutrition, healthy orchard and strong industry.

Ashby says the theme of nutrition is designed to raise awareness among growers that they are not just growing fruit; but are producing a high-quality product that meets the needs of consumers who are becoming increasingly conscious of the health benefits of the food they are eating.

“We need to explore opportunities to leverage the nutritional benefits of this fruit, especially as we seek to further develop markets in Asia.”

The joint New Zealand and Australia Avocado growers’ conference is held as part of the memorandum of understanding between NZ Avocado Growers Association Inc and Australian counterparts Avocado Australia Ltd to foster a stronger working relationship between the two peak industry bodies.

Nutritional Values also represents a great opportunity for avocado industry product and service providers to promote their businesses to growers.

NZ Avocado spokesman Midge Munro says the body has “excellent support from businesses involved in

the avocado industry” for the nutritional push.

We came to the SPCA after being found dumped on a rural road in a black rubbish sack. Luckily, someone came past and saw the sack moving and saved our lives.

Riding on world stage After growing up surrounded by motorcycling, Tauranga’s Gabby Gundry is following the family passion for trial riding.

Six years after Gabby, now 19, got involved in the technical riding competitions she is riding on the world stage in France at the Trials of the Nations event as part of the first New Zealand women’s team to ever compete.

Gabby – who is ranked New Zealand’s number two female rider behind fellow women’s team member Stephanie Downs – says it was “pretty exciting” to be picked for the national squad, and she’s determined to give the event everything.

Trial riding – not to be confused with trail riding – is all about riders overcoming technical challenges on obstacle courses. Tests vary from negotiating through creeks, over logs, or up rock steps without putting your feet on the ground (or riders are penalised).

Gabby is excited to be competing against the best in the world both individually in the world championships, which are being today (September 6), and as a team member in the Trial of Nations event tomorrow (September 7).

Her goal in France is to ride her best and for the team to make the top 15 – in an event which is expected to be dominated by the Europeans, where the sport is most popular.

“I started riding competitively about six years ago – I’ve been riding bikes mucking around my whole life. My father, my brother and my granddad all do it, so I thought I might as well get stuck in myself.”

Since then Gabby hasn’t looked back, going on to make a name for herself, including winning the Oceania team’s title in 2010.

“That was great and then we won the Australian women’s cup the year after.”

Gabby rates winning the 2011 Clubman’s North Island series as another highlight – in part because she was the only woman in the grade.

“They didn’t like that,” says Gabby, who rates her favourite challenge as beating the guys.

Celebrating Italian American connections A day of celebrations is planned for this Saturday at Farmer Auto Village, with the introduction of the Fiat and Alfa Romeo range to the vehicle dealership.

American car-lovers can join their Italian cousins at the Hewletts Rd yard event, which also includes the re-launch of the Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge brands.

Farmer Motor Group general manager Warren Carter says the addition of the Italian badges complements the dealership’s range of top car brands, thanks to the Fiat and Alfa Romeo range’s European design flair and smart use of technology.

Warren says the badges bring their own unique offerings – including the 1200cc-powered mini Fiat 500 and the commercial Ducato van range – for customer segments not covered by the current stable of car brands.

The celebration at the yard run is on Saturday (September 7) from 11am-4pm, with visitors treated to a free barbecue of Italian sausages in American burger buns, along with all-day giveaways and a chance to test drive your favourite Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge.

Legendary Kiwi rally racer remembered this weekend Ten years on since legendary Kiwi rally driver ‘Possum’ Bourne died, his presence will be alive and well on Saturday when two of his old cars compete in the South Auckland rally bearing his name.

Now owned by Hamilton’s Craig Vincent, the rare two-door Subaru Impreza coupe will be in a mildly tuned state with only 450 horsepower available when it takes to Saturday’s round of the national rally championship. In its wildest format, the car, which Bourne and his team built for the 2002 Race to the Sky in the South Island’s

Cardrona Valley, had more than 800 horsepower.

“Now it’s pretty much like a WRC car of 10 years ago without a turbo restrictor,” says Craig.

“Cody’s under instruction not to break it or throw it off the road, but I think it will be entertaining.”

The front of the field will also see Christchurch’s Stu Weber driving the most successful car Possum ever had – the Group A Impreza WRX which was victorious in four successive Australian Rally Championships between 1996 and 1999 and helped win the 2000 Asia Pacific Championship.

Trial riding family: Jacob, Gabby, Kevin and Michael Gundry are looking forward to the national championships in Tauranga next month.

Trial by tyre All motorcyclists like to think they have well-developed skills – but the best way to prove and improve your talent is by testing your mettle.

It’s what Tauranga rider Kevin Gundry has been doing for about 30 years, since he began competing in motorcycle trial events in his teens. The competition, unlike other riding contests, does not involve speed but focuses on skilfully negotiating an obstacle course with challenges which vary depending on the rider’s standard.

Competitors have a set route to progress through, on a special bike without a seat, with the aim being to finish the section successfully by negotiating hazards such as rock steps, waterfalls, through creeks or on logs, without putting your feet on the ground. Every time a rider stops, puts their feet down, or falls off, they are penalised – the ultimate winner is the one with the least penalties.

“There is something there for everyone,” says Kevin, who competes in intermediate grade (mid-level of five grades) alongside daughter Gabby. Son Jacob is in A-grade (second-top grade), and Kevin’s 72-year-old father Michael enjoys the Clubman’s grade contest (first grade).

“My father and another fella in his 70s still have a good day out and compete and get a lot of respect.”

progressing to competition trial events.

“I guess we just liked mucking around on motorbikes, just riding around; then it was just one step up from there to take it get involved in competition.”

The sport is a lot more popular in Britain than New Zealand, which he immigrated to 18 years ago. But Kevin is hoping the sport’s profile will be boosted in Tauranga with the national trials to be hosted in the district during Labour Weekend with events in Te Puke and Oropi.

“We are hoping the exposure will encourage others to come out and try it themselves.”

The whole Gundry family will be involved in the MTF First Avenue New Zealand Moto Trials Championships, with the three younger riders competing, while Michael has decided against riding to help coach rising talent Jacob, who finished second overall in his first year in the A grade.

Before shifting to New Zealand, Kevin competed in some major events including riding at the British championships and the legendary Scottish Six Days Trials – one of the biggest events in the world – which he rode three times.

“I finished. That was the aim of the game. It’s a really hard event. It’s man and machine against each other, you ride more than 100 miles a day. And most of it is off-road, so it’s a real challenge.

“That is pretty extreme – you are out there with no backup, whereas at a local event you are not far from the pits where you can go back to your van and fix your punctures and so on.”

Cody finishes fourth in series Mount motocross star Cody Cooper has finished the Australian Motocross Championships series just off the podium, achieving fourth placing in the series.

The series finale event at Coolum last Saturday saw Cody achieve fourth, just behind Suzuki team mate Matt Moss, who despite his third-placing in the round took out the premier MX1 series title.

Cody, the current Kiwi champion, says it has been an enjoyable season, despite some ups and downs.

Matt amassed 643 points for the series to take out top spot, ahead of second-place Todd Waters (627), Billy Mackenzie (583), while Cody racked up 535 points.

Later this month Cody will head to Leigzig in Germany, to compete in the Motocross of Nations team alongside fellow Mount rider Rhys Carter, and Kayne Lamont.

The international motocross showdown begins September 29.

The art of pizza making Before I worked in an Italian restaurant in Greece, my experience with pizza was minimal.

Fortunately, the owner was considered one of the best pizza chefs on the island. Roberto had been to a pizza technical institute – yes they have one Italy – as well as specialised gelato school for chefs who choose to specialise in such a craft.

An ex-designer shoe salesman from Milan, Roberto ran an 80-seat restaurant, La Dolce Vita. A large chunk of the restaurant’s profits were from pizzas – I even delivered them on a scooter. The life skills I learned then are repeated every time I do a function at No 1 The Strand.

For Roberto, making pizza was an art form. The stretching of dough without tearing, the subtle amount of toppings; and the little tips (never touch the edge of the dough).

It’s a million miles away from the pathetic, fast food excuse we get from tasteless, cheese-stuffed cardboard-texture bases readily available from your local.

Alas, I have yet to recreate the true flavour of a genuine Roberto Pizza, but I do have his tips and recipes; and I have, for this week, come up with a blondish pizza which you can make that tastes a lot like a real pizza should taste like.

Of course, this isn’t Daz’s 15 minute meal, so you do have to plan ahead. By adding honey and olive oil you get a crisp but moist pizza base.

Blondish Pizza

(makes two long pizzas)

Dough: 3.5 cups baker’s flour (plus extra for dusting) 1.5tsp dry yeast 1Tbsp honey 1.5 cups warm water 2Tbsp sea salt flakes 2Tbsp olive oil Blondish Sauce: 25g butter ½ cup flour 550-600ml milk ¼ glass white wine 1 cup grated parmesan 1 egg Pepper and salt Toppings: (No set amounts here, but use less rather than more – dependant on how much you stretch the pizza) Mozzarella, microgreens, ham, blue cheese, mushrooms, feta.

Method Add a cup of flour in a bowl, then warm honey and half a cup of water together until tepid. Pour from a height into the flour and loosely mix. This releases the glutens in the starter mix before the yeast is added. After five minutes add the yeast and a little more water – stir loosely and shake in the salt and olive oil. Stir into a thick batter, cover and rest in a warm place for about 30 minutes.

After this, the dough should have swelled considerably.

Add more water, make a sloppy dough then add rest of flour to form a stiff but pliable dough.

Knead on a cool bench by pushing away from you, and bringing the dough back at least 12 times. Form into long log shapes and cut and roll into balls of an even size – dependant on your oven tray.

You will need about 170-200g as a base.

Cover and leave in a warm place for three hours.

While they rise, make the sauce by warming milk, then in a separate pot melt butter and add flour. Slowly add milk and whisk into a sauce. Cook for 3-4minutes to cook out the flour, stirring constantly.

Season, then add wine and take off the heat to whisk in egg and parmesan. Whisk until you get a nice thick sauce, then set aside (cover the top well to prevent a crust developing).

After three hours, form dough gently into shape without touching the edges. Spread on the sauce and embed toppings with a liberal amount of mozzarella to bind together.

For the photograph we have feta and microgreens, and ham and mushroom, with small dobs of blue cheese.

Rest the prepared pizza, again covered in a warm place, for another hour then bake at 250-280 degrees Celsius for about 20 minutes.

Bake near the bottom of your oven, check half way through as you may have to shift the pizza higher up if the base is getting too dark.

Top salmon dish for student chef Ajo’s Restaurant, famous for its gourmet wood-fired pizzas, now has its mains and pastas cooked by an award winning chef.

Student chef Jason Cameron was awarded a silver medal for his salmon dish entered in the training section of the New Zealand Culinary Fare last month.

Jason’s award winning dish was a milk poached salmon on a chicken barley broth, served with balsamic pearls, macro salad, lemon air and lemon orange caramel.

The 22-year-old is studying a Level 4 Hospitality Certificate at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic

and has been working at the Central Parade restaurant for about 10 months.

Jason is behind the tasty mediterannian inspired a la carte meals, entrees and pasta available on Ajo’s menu.

Restaurant owner Wendy Forgesson says Jason is a talented young chef and is proud he has taken home the silver award.

“He put a lot of work into it. It’s exciting, we certainly don’t ever have any complaints with his food.”

Men remember their lives at sea Having travelled to foreign waters on ships during World War II – memories are always present for two former merchant seamen who experienced their vessels being torpedoed and sunk.

John Gregson and Bob Wyld, who first went to sea as teenagers, both have vivid memories of having their ships attacked by German opposition during World War II. Merchant Navy Day on Tuesday is commemorating the loss of 32,000 merchant navy personnel during World War Two. September 3 is the chosen date to com-

memorate the day – being the day World War II began and the passenger liner SS Athenia sunk, killing 118 passengers and seamen – but Tauranga is choosing to hold its commemorative service on Sunday, September 8.

John, a Mount Maunganui resident, joined the NZ Merchant Navy in 1940.

At just 16, the ship John was serving on was torpedoed in 1942. Six months later John was forced to spend three days on a life boat after his ship was torpedoed again, setting the ship on fire.

John says there was a constant fear of your ship being torpedoed.

“You never used to close your cabin door in case it jammed. We always had the life boat swung out just in case. Everything happened very quickly.

At night, John says the ship sailed in black out (with no lights) to avoid giving away their position and being torpedoed by German submarines.

“The German submarines were very efficient. They sunk thousands of ships.”

John moved from England to New Zealand in 1952.

Now age 89, John says he

spent his life at sea until becoming a harbour pilot at the Port of Tauranga in 1961.

Bob, a Tauranga resident, also joined the NZ Merchant Navy as a teenager and first went to sea at age 16. Bob served on ships ferrying food from New Zealand and Australia to Britain.

“We travelled five times to pick up food [from NZ] without any naval support. The merchant navy saved Britain in the first year, because they would’ve starved otherwise.”

At one point during his service, Bob’s merchant navy ship was stationed for repairs.

While The Ferndale was being fixed in port, Bob was offered a month’s holiday, but he chose to sail on another ship, The Waipawa, immediately.

Three days into its next voyage The Ferndale was torpedoed and sunk. “They called me lucky Wyld.”

Waiting, and suffering the onslaught of torpedoes are clear memories for Bob. “We were frightened all of the time. We did the job but we were frightened. You’re lying in your bunk at night waiting for a bang.”

A commemorative service will be held on Sunday, September 8, at the Merchant Navy and Royal NZ Navy Memorial at Sulphur Point from 2pm. Following this, the Battle of Britain will be remembered with a parade and service at Tauranga RSA from 10am on September 15.

The 35-year-old, focused on her training at Greerton pools for the November 27-30 event in Dunedin, has a deeper dream of being selected for the Special Olympics’ World Games in Los Angeles in 2016.

“I love swimming and have such a passion for it,” says Cara. “I’m really excited about the Nationals and I want to make the Worlds again to prove what I’m made of and that I can do it.” When Cara gets in the pool she is no longer a person with Down Syndrome – she’s a swimmer.

“That’s why I love it so much.”

Family friend Jane Lyle says Cara has been swimming since age five, has trained with Masters teams and won medals at the 1999 Special Olympics World Games in Atlanta. “Cara has competed in many club events growing up and swimming in Special Olympics for a long time. She’s always been a good swimmer – now she’s swimming at her best.”

Coach Pat Wakelin says Cara is very competent in all four strokes and “her speciality is individual medley”. While Special Olympics is for those with an intellectual disability, Pat says the events are very competitive and no flutter across the pool – Cara trains hard and competes to win.

“We’ve had spectators at Special Olympics competitions in awe of their skills,” says Pat, Cara’s coach for 13 years.

“She’s motivated and serious about swimming and trains early – via individual programme – on her own accord. We turn up at the pool at 11am and she’s been there since 10am.” Cara is one of nine swimmers – and 47 Tauranga athletes – heading to Dunedin. Competing in 100m individual medley, 200m freestyle and 50m breaststroke, winning Gold, Silver or Bronze allows her to seek nomination for the World Games.

Stress – how do we manage this?

Part four of supporting our immune system is looking at how we manage our stress.

They say occasional stress is actually good for us, but it’s the chronic, long term stress that plays an adverse part in our health.

There are many books out there suggesting anti-stress ideas like meditation.

But if you are anything like me, the closest you can get to having time to meditate is the time you get into bed, before you fall asleep.

There is another option: Mindful Meditation. It’s about learning to

be in the moment. For example, when driving to work/school be present in that moment, watch where you are driving and what is going on around you.

It’s so easy to be driving to work, thinking about the shopping list, texting a friend and trying to stop the kids squabbling in the back seat. So just try doing one thing, in that moment, and you will be surprised how slowing down can slow your system down. You could

also force a smile. Bernie Siegel (MD), an expert in the field of mind-body medicine, says if you pretend to be happy by forcing a smile or a laugh, your body will react by producing less cortisol.

So there you go, two simple, achievable techniques to assist with reducing stress.

Give it a go. A mindful day, being aware, smiling or laughing…doesn’t sound that hard really.

Parent support for children with Type 1 diabetes Parents of children with Type 1 diabetes are invited to attend a free information and support evening next week.

On Tuesday night, guest speakers will discuss important issues surrounding raising children and teenagers with the condition and offer support and advice.

Diabetes Help Tauranga spokesperson Rebecca Ryder says this is the first of what they hope will be bi-monthly events for parents.

“There are many parents out there who aren’t connected to other parents with kids with Type 1 diabetes. It’s a chance for those parents to mix and socialise and get important information.”

“On a daily basis Type 1 diabetes can be a life threatening condition. The younger the children are, the more responsibility you have as a parent in managing the condition. As they grow, your role changes as a parent and so does your role in managing diabetes. “We’re trying to network parents to enable sharing of ideas. We also plan to bring many expert speakers to increase our knowledge in helping our children manage their condition." Diabetes Help Tauranga also runs a youth group for those up to 20 years with family and youth camps and activities for all ages.

Lynx Hair Direction has been behind the divas’ big, bold and beautiful up-dos since the show began in 2004.

Salon owner Penny Rimer wants to express her gratitude toward her staff for their hard work. Particularly to her good friend Donna Erickson, who has helped with every show, and her assistant Jazz Ried. And don’t forget the production team, and the team from Adoux, who did the amazing hair creations for the dancers and singers.

Despite the name, Penny says the girls were nothing like ‘divas’ to work with.

“We have loved being a part of the show. We work extremely hard on it. It’s a huge sense of achievement, great team bonding, and a chance to be creative.”

At the Lynx salon, Penny says the hairdressers pride themselves on their hair-up work and women can visit the salon for their own ‘diva inspired’ up-do at any time. ‘Tarnished Frocks and Divas’ is a show celebrating women – who they are and what they can still become. The shows inspire women to continue to challenge themselves, create new goals and to be a positive influence on their families, friends and wider community. Penny encourages Bay women to audition for the next show.

Student stylists win big at awards Seven Hair to Train students entered the Waikato Regional Hairdresser of the Year Awards 2013 on August 11, picking up three first places, two seconds and a standing ovation from the judges.

Brandi-Reign O’Neill-Smith stole the Avant Garde section with her up do ‘Brandi’s Bird’.

Her creation depicted a bird cage made from hair, and her model was body painted to create the full effect.

Hair to Train education manager Jo Brierley says Brandi’s creation received a standing ovation from the judges. “It was incredible.” Kaye Walker, Jordan Kohi and Sapphira Smallman placed second in the same event. In the Pre Trade Blow Wave section, Hair to Train students picked up first and second places with Jaene Louw placing first and Isabella Farmiloe-Duff second with their “outstanding” blow waves. Council finances get a big tick Audit NZ signed off Tauranga City Council’s end of year accounts with a clean bill of health. Staff had pulled out all stops and completed the work a month ahead of last year.

The auditor told us there will be changed reporting standards in the future. Contrary to some expectations, the auditor told us this may not mean increased costs.

There was no reporter present from daily print media to hear the good news, who gives plenty of publicity to council finances, including debt. Rarely is it reported part of this debt has been created to provide infrastructural assets, needed as our city grows – just as most people get a mortgage to help fund their homes. For sure, the debt is up there. But as the audit report shows, it’s all part of a carefully-managed financial package providing a reasonable standard of living facilities and amenities – and sharing the cost with those, who in future, will benefit.

Talking of assets, the Mayor and I attended Huharua Park to mark completion of another addition to the great asset.

At the end of Plummer’s Point Rd, towards Omokoroa, this is a joint venture between TCC and Western Bay of Plenty District Council. Originally a strategic Maori Pa, it has been restored somewhat to its former function. Latterly, it was a kiwifruit orchard.

The original defensive trench is still there along with a huge Pohutukawa tree, reportedly dating back to pre-European times. It’s well worth a trip out there.

With the Local Body Elections pending

there have been issues raised in the community. It’s a good time to do this, as most elected members become really focused at this time. The Greerton Library is one matter, with a public meeting held at Greerton Hall.

This project was stood down (at the last minute) after the April floods while council considered the financial effects of the floods.

The resolution states: “That the Greerton Library be assessed through the 2014/15 Annual Plan”. As it’s to be funded with $1.8million of development contributions, as part of the budgeted $3.2m cost, it’s my opinion it’s likely to proceed next year now we have a reasonably clear way forward to address financial costs of the flooding problems.

In the “oops not again” department the Bay Times ran an online story about Rick Curach with the headline: “Electoral bungle blow to newbies” but published an accompanying photo of Bill Grainger. There was much hilarity among some election members, as it was contemplated which one got the electoral advantage (or otherwise!).

The red ensign was flying at City Hall on September 3 which was Merchant Navy Remembrance Day – in memorial of all those who gave their lives in the World Wars in order to bring supplies to keep the armed forces operating. As I’ve noted before, the British merchant seamen’s pay stopped from the moment their ship sunk.

I’ve been in conversation with downtown CBD retailers. They’re keen to energise the

downtown area and moves are afoot to get this going soon. The $3 per hour parking charge in prime CBD space has been a bridge too far it seems. Did you know once you have purchased a parking slip you can move to other parking spaces within that time? You get 10 minutes’ free time allowance as well.

Some elected members attended an onstreet meeting with a few Marine Parade residents lobbying for council to permanently ban certificated motor homes from overnighting opposite their homes and businesses on Marine Parade. As I noted previously, council is the meat in a Government-created sandwich. Government passed legislation allowing certificated motor homes to park almost anywhere unless council specifically prohibits it. The only reason allowed in the legislation is for the likes of health, safety, access and nuisance. Whatever the outcome, one sector or other will not be satisfied.

Trees are up for policy review again. Oh joy. Ex-councillor Mary Dillon addressed us in the public forum, speaking in favour of saving silver birch trees. Mary has 10 silver birches on her property.

Trees are guaranteed to generate emotive debate every time and the usual argy bargy on how we would proceed with this review evolved. Current policy is all about “vegetation and tree management” and nothing about the effect – both good and bad – on the community. I asked a review include a policy objective that considers all aspects of the wellbeing of the community when implementing the policy. We will have a workshop

soon to discuss detail. It will be an open workshop and it is anticipated to be a lengthy and lively discussion.

Besides this, it looks as if the tree sub-committee hearing applications for variations to the present policy will get the chop in the next triennium. But you will still be able to be heard by the hearings panel.

We also set policy for elected member’s expenses in the next triennium. Not many elected members make claims and those that have claimed are for attendance expenses at conferences and the like. Apparently, councils elsewhere have been flogging the system in the past. Last week we had a presentation on retaining open space at the Phoenix carpark in downtown Mount, instead of building a shopping centre and covered carpark. No decisions have been made and this one is guaranteed to generate plenty of public opinion.

Confidence boosting workshop for school holidays Performing arts company ‘Artz on Show’ is opening an exciting confidence-boosting Workshop in Tauranga in the October school holidays.

The Mary Poppins themed Workshop, for students aged 5-15, is at the Bethlehem College Performing Arts Centre from September 30 – October 4.

Artz on Show gives students of all abilities the opportunity to try out a variety of

performing arts disciplines.

Daily core classes include drama, advanced drama, hip hop and jazz. There are variations made daily with additional classes examples are vocals, specialised dance, stage makeup, face painting, art and team building. The Workshop introduces students to performing arts and gives them the opportunity to perform on stage – the show is the highlight of the week with parents

Lacking sound management Is this prominently just a nation of Maori with a few Europeans involved? Most of our overseas advertising indicates that.

Surely there are other ways, too, of introducing our country. After all, the Maori population in New Zealand is only 15 per cent with no full-blooded ones left.We keep giving in to so many of their demands, and so far, no giving back. What they say, was unfairly taken from them, it has been far more compensated

by now. Why are we still paying for something 180 years ago? Need we mention the many advantages we’ve introduced and helped to provide, that Maori, like the rest of us, have today.

Yet still our government continues to pour millions of dollars and property to them, including special privileges, surrendering to most of their demands.

They will never be satisfied.

Where’s our “One law for all” –

with equal opportunity?

Have we forgotten our first pioneer settlers, who toiled so hard, breaking in our land, milling timber, building dwellings and carving out roads etc, the start of what we all have today? Those are the men and women we should honour, recognize and be so thankful for. Are we too late to use common sense?

Let us face facts and have a fair future for all. Let common sense prevail. We have a beautiful country, sadly-lacking is sound management. I remain a proud New Zealander.

Te Papa: Their place or our place?

Someone recently described the meaning of Te Papa not as ‘Our Place’ but as ‘Their Place’ - and ‘Their’ being Maori. In an article on Te Papa in the Listener (August 31 edition), we see just how far Maori-ization of this institute has gone and how far government nepotism has extended.

Several internationally renowned scientists, leaders in the field of taxonomy, have been made redundant while the Government’s appointment of Maori to key areas continues.

None of the senior managers have a scientific background when one would believe that should be a pre-requisite for a museum appointment. The former government-appointed chairman was Sir Wira Gardiner, husband of Education Minister Hekia Parata, ex-soldier, founding director of the Waitangi Tribunal and later

chief executive of the Ministry of Maori Development Te Puni Kokiri. He has been replaced by Evan Williams, a lawyer with long term involvement with iwi over cultural and land issues. He shares responsibility for ‘cultural leadership and strategic management’ with a kaihatu or Maori leader, Rhonda Paku, senior curator of the museum’s Maori collection.

The present spokesperson for the sciences is Claudia Orange, known for her work on the Treaty of Waitangi. Of the many redundancies, no Maori has been dismissed.

Does the preceding paragraph suggest a certain preponderance of control or influence at Te Papa by 14 per cent of our population.

All this by a government elected to represent all New Zealanders, a government showing scant regard for this gross racial imbalance.

The day Te Papa opened I was

living in Russell and watching the telecast with our German neighbours and their two guests from Germany.

The proceedings began with a view from Te Papa of the wakas approaching across the harbour. As they reached the shore the kuias wailed and the waiata and karakia rang out.

This went on for a long time with most of the narrative in Maori. A brief interlude, a couple of minutes, followed showing the inside of a cabin on a migrant ship, and this was followed by a Polynesian choir.

At the end of hours of proceedings, the visitors from Germany observed: “If this truly shows you how you live, your culture and history, then surely at least 90 per cent of New Zealanders are Maori or Polynesians”. Little has changed.

Seeing red over blue-eye myth I’m so angry after hearing what a teacher in a South Island school told his/her pupils: “Blue-eyed students are more intelligent than brown-eyed students”.

What in hell was that teacher thinking if indeed he/she has a brain and how could that school’s principal condone that? Apparently some parents thought this comment was okay. No doubt parents of blue-eyed kids.

The teacher said it was interesting to see the looks on the brown-eyed students’ faces when they heard that comment. Ya think?

Try telling that to the parents of a brown-eyed kid, who has just commit-

ted suicide because they felt worthless, had lost all or any self-confidence they may have had and quite possibly were bullied by “intelligent” blue-eyed students, who thought it was fun to taunt a brown-eyed student about their lack of intelligence.

I think this is disgusting, unacceptable and that teacher should be fired and never allowed to work in any school again. I am not a PC person but I really hope the PC brigade come down on that school, the principal and that teacher like a tonne of bricks. This is not Germany and we are not in the 1940s.

It is fantastic to hear that the Bay of Plenty Regional Council intends to allocate $15 million towards a tertiary education campus in the city.

The Council should be applauded for their commitment to keeping and attracting young people to Tauranga. Too often our best and brightest must leave to further their education. This will allow the next generation of leaders to stay here and apply their skills and potential in the local community.

It is also great to hear the news that a $5 million publicly funded birthing centre is to be built in Bethlehem.

During the years, I have had a number of people come to me expressing the need for just this type of centre. The 12-room Bethlehem Birthing Centre, due to be open in September 2014, fills a gap in local services, offering a non-hospital birth, accommodation and sup-

Referendum will cost NZ dearly Since the eighties a succession of governments, Tory and Labour, have shown contempt for the electorate along with a total lack of knowledge of economics.

Everything either party has tried has failed.

We live in and have lived in a morass of poverty for many years since the David Lange-led Government and calamitous economics of Roger the Dodger (Douglas) and his chum Richard Prebble.

Selling state-owned assets has never worked and never will work apart from a few weeks’ period after the sale and then money has run out.

Both parties have had garage sales that have amassed billions of dollars lasting a few months and now we are deeper debt than we have ever been.

Now Labour is demonstrating further total lack of economic sense by forcing a pointless referendum on the taxpayers of New Zealand.

The Goverment also shows contempt for the electorate, along with lack of economic sense, by boldly telling us the referendum will be ignored which we knew anyway.

The taking of this poll will cost New Zealand taxpayers dearly, when the Government is virtually

broke. Is at all possible there is someone in the Labour Party that could have pointed out that the referendum will be ignored? Obviously not.

Most of us knew what the situation would be and would have counselled Labour not to call for such a time and money wasting exercise. Are we to take either party seriously as seekers of the treasury benches next year?

I think not. Neither party seems to have any understanding of economics whatsoever. Looks more like the party we need is 1law4all.

Election:Where to place your trust?

Local body elections are about Hope. The hope that if we place our trust and faith in someone for the next three years, will a difference will be made?

So now, that soon we will be voting, how do we evaluate? A barometer for me is: Are the basic things being done? Because, if they are not, how can we place our trust in the hope that the big issues that need to be dealt with, will get done.

This barometer makes me look at my road, Ohauiti Rd. It is the Westerm Bay of Plenty District Council’s responsibility, through statute, to control the noxious pest woolly nightshade on roading reserve. For this they get a big fail.

Even though this issue was brought to their attention in March, nothing has been done, even though it is election year. Woolly nightshade is a curse of a

weed, where from roadsides it invades productive pasture and ecological areas.

Horticulturists and farmers have a hard enough time as it is, without poor council weed management adding to their woes.

In situations where mature seed producing pest trees have been happening for several years, the council is potentially exposing ratepayers to a legal claim for damages brought by landowners - who would be within their rights.

I am advised funding for woolly nightshade control is now based on a policy of “reactive” instead of the previous “proactive” from my observations it is “No Active”.

So where to place your trust? Are the basic things being done? The power is with all of us, but only if we vote.

Signwritten vehicles: Solve problem’s source shows up candidates Tauranga City Council u-turn on signwritten election vehicles, indicates while the rules may have been illthought out, Mr Baker for one (as I recall) previously supported prohibiting any election signage when the restrictions were first mooted.

Makes you wonder when people can’t or won’t obey the rules (pre-latest amendment) or will deliberately flout them, what sort of governance and leadership acumen they show.

Teammate Gail McIntosh’s comments seems to indicate either she can’t read, or if TCC signage rules don’t suit, then the inconvenient truth of September 14 is simply ignored and treated as a misprint without checking.

Frankly one thing is as bad as the other, and as a group you would think these people might at least be singing from the same song sheet.

Let’s now look at another piece of TCC madness -Freedom Campers. TCC surely had to severely restrict the number of vehicles, length of stay and limit parking to council-controlled carparks or reserves. Then TCC simply continue to pander to those who effectively bring nothing to Tauranga.

Even Westland District Council had more brains.

Among many problems we face in today’s society, drug abuse is probably high on the list if not tops. Its costing the country millions ,and more importantly in the derogation of human lives, costs are immeasurable.

While recent public outcry and demonstrations against drug-testing on animals is understandable and to be applauded, there would no issue if the availability of Psychoactive Substances (for example, party pills) was withdrawn.

How any self-respecting politician, who is supposed to be principaled and in parliament to stand for the welfare and good of people, could support this bill in any form is unbelievable. The opportunity is there to do something about it. We need to lobby the Goverment for an immediate law change. Also, protestors might consider changing their placcards to highlight the source of the problem.

Let's talk about albums.

Albums are becoming a difficult proposition. The problem afflicting the whole of the music business is particularly acute for albums – there just ain't no money in it.

CD sales are continuing to decline and CDs, as a response to outlets like the Warehouse selling out-of-copyright or repackaged albums, are now cheaper than they've ever been.

There are also far fewer music shops as people switch to downloading music as bulk-commodity mp3s. Which they usually do on a song by song basis, making the album an even more financially-challenged commodity: why record those songs that are “album songs”, as opposed to “singles”, if no one's going to download them? The rule of downloading is that the most standout catchy tunes get the downloads. A long subtle “album track” doesn't stand a chance.

And albums are expensive to make. Sure, they don't need to be Michael Jackson Thriller expensive, but if you're doing it properly it's going to cost. We do things a bit more cheaply in Tauranga where many musicians and helpers are willing to work

Saturday (7 September) afternoon sees a free gig from the blues and roots juggernaut that is Swamp Thing. The duo of Grant Haua and Michael Barker have featured regularly in this column and a free gig sounds just the ticket! They're playing at the new Brew Bar on the Strand, kicking off at 3.00pm.

Sunday sees another of the occasional shows at the Omokoroa Boat Club where the charismatic Paul Ubana Jones will be joined by well-travelled Nelson singer/songwriter Bryce Wastney. They kick off what should be a great gig at 4.00pm. Tickets are $25.

Also on Sunday, Hipnottick Erra will be presenting their unique brand of funk rock at La Mexica on the Stand at 3.00pm, and the Entertainers Club holds its monthly concert at 5.00pm at the Bureta Park Motor Inn. Starring: James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson, Vincent Cassel - Dir: Danny Boyle After taking time out to create the opening ceremony for the London Olympics, Danny Boyle returns to film with a tricksy heist thriller where working out what is going on at any point is half the fun.

It’s as if someone has fused Inception with The Thomas Crown Affair when an art robbery, with McAvoy as the inside man, goes slightly pear-shaped and the stolen painting goes missing. To complicate matters, McAvoy receives a blow to the head and can’t remember where it went. Criminal mastermind Cassel is less than chuffed by this but threats and torture don’t help so he calls in Dawson’s

hypnotherapist to try and recover the missing memories.

That’s the basic set-up but is only the ground floor of a complex construction wherein nothing – naturally – is as it appears.

It dos require a little patience, but the best approach is just to wallow in the slick visuals and plot twists and not to worry that much of it doesn’t make sense at the time: the web of double and triple crosses does untangle by the ending.

Another reason to see it? At the risk of unforgivable sexism I must mention that Rosario Dawson is a goddess. And, briefly

The shadow of Goodfellas looms large over The . Like that film it is a true-life story Iceman of low-level Mafioso, specifically mob killer Richard Kuklinski, responsible for over 100 hits. That he is first taken on in the 1960s by Ray Liotta only adds to the resonance. But this is far from the enticingly frenetic Goodfellas – these are not even superficially people you would ever want to meet. It’s a cold film, with Michael Shannon’s brooding central performance leaving the character an enigma, a sociopathic moral black hole who (apparently) loved his wife and kids and refused to kill women and children.

The Emperor is a big serious and extremely handsome film about the aftermath of Japan’s World War 2 surrender. Central to events are General MacArthur (Tommy Lee Jones) and, primarily, cultural expert General Fellers (Matthew Fox), trying to decide how to deal with the captive Emperor Hirohito as the country endures post-bombing turmoil and Stalin’s red army hovers in the shadows. Running parallel is Feller’s search for his pre-war Japanese lover. Despite initial reservations (dry subject matter) this completely won me over with its blend of complex political intrigue and detective story, and its fascinating glimpse into the intricacies of a mysterious culture.

And there are some great television series with Kiwi connections recently out on DVD for those who missed them amongst the inanities of our TV scheduling. Jane Campion’s miniseries Top of the Lake stars Mad Men’s Elizabeth Moss (looking uncannily like a young Jodie Foster) and investigates shady goings on around the Queenstown area. Peter Mullan and David Wenham help out in a spiralling mystery kicked off by the disappearance of a pregnant 12-year-old.

Community invited to wetlands wander for charity As Delwynne Hahunga set out on another run through the Papamoa Wetlands, she was unaware of the idea her surroundings would inspire.

Being fundraising manager for the Child Cancer Foundation, Delwynne

realised the scenic and reasonably unknown area would make the perfect location for a family fundraiser, set for next weekend.

“I was thinking how few people are using it [the wetlands]. It’s such a really lovely spot, and I’m pretty sure many people in the Papamoa area don’t even know it’s there.”

The idea prompted the first Papamoa Wetlands Wander – a fundraising event for the CCF and a chance for families to explore the walking track, says Delwynne.

“It’s really bike-friendly for little kids and adults, it’s used for bikes as well as running, walking and playing.”

She is encouraging parents, families and friends to come together in support of the organisation, and the increasing number of local families affected by child cancer.

“We do have quite a few children diagnosed with cancer in the area at the moment, and it would be nice for people to show them some support.”

The 5km track takes about an hour to complete at a casual speed, and a complementary coffee and muffin will be available on completion.

Delwynne asks people to register beforehand ($15 early bird), at: www.enteronline.co.nz and searching Papamoa Wetlands Wander. The foundation is also seeking volunteers for the day, and a barista to donate their services (coffee supplied).

Dementia – what help is available?

Age Concern is presenting its third seminar on ‘Health Issues in Senior Years’. The topic on September 10 is Dementia. Dr Bronwyn Copeland, a psychiatrist for older people at Tauranga Hospital will be the presenter.

Bronwyn says it is important that we have a basic understanding of this illness, what can be done about it, and what can be done to support suffers and families in their journey with dementia. She will cover four areas in this presentation: When should you get

worried? What actually is dementia? Management of symptoms, and support and for you and your family.

Bronwyn will answer these questions as well as enhance understanding of dementia and specifically Alzheimer’s disease-type dementia. She will be covering some basic definitions and will give a broad overview of the different dementia syndromes.

Bronwyn will also talk about treatments, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological, as well as touch on prevention.

With population ageing, illnesses like dementia are becoming more and more prevalent. This will result in increased pressure on the health care system and the economy to provide necessary treatment and care.

No doubt this will also affect sufferers of dementia and their families/whanau.

I decided to go to the CAP course because, although I could live very well on an overdraft, I was not so good at living within my means. Kiwi classic in film night Pampering perfection Original footage and never before seen photographs from Sir Edmund Hillary’s epic climb up Mt Everest will feature in Waipuna Hospice’s next film fundraiser in October.

Waipuna Hospice is hosting the premiere of ‘Beyond the Edge’ – a New Zealand-made film depicting the conquest of Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.

The movie includes dramatic re-creations, original footage and never seen before photographs, with Sir Ed played by Chad Moffitt.

After reading about the film and how delighted the Hillary family is with the final cut, Waipuna Hospice fundraising manager Trish Rae thought it would make a great choice for their next movie fundraiser.

“Sir Ed was very fondly thought of, and so widely-known by New Zealanders. It is just such a lovely fit for us and

our supporters. We did a movie premiere a few years ago for ‘The World’s Fastest Indian’ – another wonderful movie about an iconic Kiwi.”

To complete the experience, Trish has invited the Bay of Plenty branch of The Nepalese Association to join in. Members will dress in national costume and supply appropriate music and memorabilia.

“It adds an authentic, cultural experience to enrich the evening – rather than just the movie,” says Trish.

There will be two screenings of ‘Beyond the Edge’ at Rialto Tauranga, 6pm and 8.15pm on October 23.

Prize draws are planned and snack packs are included.

A ‘Meet the Candidates’ night at Katikati on Monday, September 9, begins 7pm at the Heritage Museum.

Choosing forgiveness Occasionally, we read in the media a feel-good piece about someone who has chosen to forgive.

Amid tears, they’ve forgiven the murderer of their loved one. It seems to be note-worthy enough to get a prominent mention in the news.

Forgiveness – it’s a great principle in life we hear very little about these days. It’s a principle or a law of life.

It works like this: when the horrible, hurtful painful stuff of life happens to us (and we’ll have ample opportunities to test this), we have the option to either forgive any people who were involved, or we can become resentful and retain that hurt and have an unforgiving heart.

The problem is, right there the issue is either released from us and others, or it is retained and both we and they become problematic. We were never designed to carry the emotional baggage of pain and hurt.

It’s true that we cannot in any way be responsible for other people’s actions and attitudes.

But we can for our own. The problem is if we retain hurt and pain done

to us, it causes so many problems.

Unreleased forgiveness is powerful.

The results are all too prevalent in our daily news.

Bitterness, sickness, retaliation, revenge, friction and broken relationships; and emotional stuff like depression, aggression, manipulation and domination.

It encourages hatred and it passes on generational failures.

Studies have shown that unforgiveness in grown up children whose parents were, for example, alcoholics has actually caused them to end up the same way.

They became the thing www. .org.nz they had retained; they keep making the same mistakes.

We’re not talking about justice; we’re talking about the release of forgiveness.
