Saving daylight and other handy tips This weekend daylight saving ends.

So those who have diligently saved all summer, may now start spending your daylight.

Anyone who foolishly didn’t save any daylight during the summer will be sorry now – unless they can borrow or buy some from persons who have surplus. Personally, I wouldn’t pay their asking prices. At the rate being charged by some outlets, it’s daylight robbery.

Also this weekend, you will have to shift the numbers on your clock. Leave the hands

where they are, because all the digits need to go forward an hour, which means that the 12 goes where the one is, the one goes where the two is. The two goes where the four is.

Ha, just testing to see if you were paying attention. Remember to put a 13 after the 12, because with the return of Daylight Spending, we get the extra hour.

Anyway, you can work it out from here. If you get confused half way around the clock face, just hum to yourself the ‘Twelve days of Christmas’ song till you get the numbers back in the same order. Or phone the Department of Internal Affairs and tell them Rogers Rabbits referred you.

DO NOT under any circumstances invert the six or the nine during your re-numbering. This will result in all sorts of mayhem and you may miss morning tea time or have two breakfasts.

Some people (who also think the earth is round) have the odd notion that it is easier to wind the

hands of the clock back, leaving the numbers in the same place. Another technique is to flip the clock facing the wall for an hour, so the hands wind backwards. Just make sure it’s for exactly 60 minutes, and presto, you’ll have reclaimed the extra time.

Well we all know that taking cheeky shortcuts like that will end in disaster. Believe me, stick with the tried-and-true digit relocation system. It’s fun for the whole family.

Even after a decades of Daylight Saving, many people are still confused as to which way to change their clocks. So here’s a little ditty to help you remember: “You put your big hand in, put your big hand out, Put your big hand in and you shake it all about.

You do the hokey cokey and you turn around, that’s what it’s all about.”

We also have some other handy tips, sent by diligent reader, Pete: Do not tell the fire brigade that you got the toaster idea from me.

It would be useful to have changed the batteries in your smoke alarm when you altered your clock numbers, so when the cheese/toast

bomb goes off in the toaster, you may get some warning.

In other news, Samoa Air has introduced “pay as you weigh” for passengers – a world first meaning fat people will pay more. Samoa is among the top 10 obesity achievers, so the airline reckons the new policy, while not only fair, will help raise awareness of health and obesity issues.

There’s a bonus here for families, as those with small children may end up paying a lot less. Especially if you starve the brats for a few weeks before your holiday. Do this by leaving the seven and 12 numbers off your clock, and they will miss three meals a day.

That is good news for skinny travellers. Now, just make sure you get your clock re-numbering right, so you don’t miss the flight.

Name game

We’re accepting new names this week for the North and South Island. The critics are right, they are very bland labels. James Cook must have been running fairly short of inspiration, after all the naming he did as he mapped the country.

This weekend we took the grandies sailing out of Whitianga, and regailed them with the “logical” naming process of the islands of Mercury Bay. “That round one is called Round Island. The one in the centre of the bay is Middle Island. Those two similar ones together are The Twins… and see that one down the coast that looks like a shoe…”

Anyway, it would be nice to have names for the North and South Island with a bit more flair and imagination. I quite like Te Waipounamu. But guess what…it will be always be the South Island because that is what we call it. Good luck brow beating the population into changing.

Egmont is still Egmont in my head and Tamatea Arikinui Drive is a wonderful name but it will always be Route J; Red Square is still Red Square and that, whether you or I like it not, is the way it will stay.

Handy household ideas You can flip a toaster on its side and grill cheese in it.

And probably burn the house down.

If you place a wooden spoon over a pot of boiling water, it won’t boil over.

If you have a party and Brendan Horan turns up, let him in.

Poor bloke got thrown out of the last party.

Take your bananas apart when you get home from the shop. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.

Add a teaspoon of water when frying minced beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.

Probably the best idea is call the islands what a lot of the current young generation call them: Norf and Sowf.

Great names

Speaking of names, we have some feedback from last week’s RR on the subject of cool names: “Greetings Brian. In teaching, ‘interesting’ (not sure about cool!) names abound for kids these days.

In my experience, if some of the parents concerned showed the same level of support and effort with their parenting skills as they seem to manage with creating unique names, more of their kids would do much better in school.

Some of the names encountered over the last few years before I recently retired from Mt Primary included Storm, Saffron and Awesome (he was too!).

I’m not sure about Ecstasy.”

I had a cousin back in Minnesota, by the name of Homer Herbert Hagna. Perhaps that’s the reason he never married! I can hardly wait each week for “RR”.

Papamoa Rotary is offering a third entry into the region’s current walkways debates by suggesting a 6.5km gravelled path along Papamoa’s coastal dunes.

Twists in teen death The 18-year-old Tauranga teenager found dead outside a Matamata hospital early Wednesday is believed to have been hit by a car whose driver was then abducted and assaulted.

Jovaan Rohera Graham’s body was discovered by staff outside Pohlen Hospital at 4am on Wednesday.

The teen is believed to be linked to a series of events including the abduction and assault of a man in the Kaimais and theft of a car from Tauranga Hospital.

Police say a 32-year-old Tauranga man was driving along State Highway 29 in the Kaimai Ranges at 3am on Wednesday. He struck a person on the road, stopped his vehicle and was then pulled from his vehicle and assaulted before being placed back into his Toyota and abducted.

Police say the Toyota stopped and the victim escaped. He underwent hospital treatment for head injuries but was released. At 4am hospital staff found Jovaan’s body outside the hospital and alerted authorities. At 4.30am Auckland Police arrested a 30-year-old man and 23-year-old woman, both from Tauranga. The pair, who have interim name suppression, are due to appear in Tauranga District Court today.

Car smashes into bank

An elderly woman was left shaken after driving her Suzuki Swift into the ANZ Bank at Bayfair on Thursday. The 80-year-old woman, who was visiting the shopping centre with her two elderly sisters, accidently put her vehicle into drive instead of reverse sending it through the glass doors of the bank, say police. Emergency services were called to the car park at the intersection of Girven Road and Maunganui Road around 10.15am.

Papamoa liquor ban sought

Papamoa Progressive Association is seeking night time liquor bans at all beaches and reserves on the seaward side of Papamoa Beach Road.

The association originally submitted to council to establish a full liquor ban in 2010, which was voted out on the basis it encroached on people’s human rights, specifically the ability to have a drink while enjoying a barbeque on the beachside.

This time Papamoa Progressive is seeking to establish a liquor ban from 10pm until 7am.

NZ’s islands renamed?

A discovery that New Zealand’s named North and South Islands were never official has opened door to officially renaming the islands, says the New Zealand Geographic Board. The NZGB, Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa last Thursday agreed to proceed to publicly consult on proposals to formally assign official alternative names to New Zealand’s two main islands; either the English name or the Maori name, or both names together. The most appropriate Maori names for the islands are Te Ika-a-Māui – The Fish of Maui, for the North Island, and Te Waipounamu, The Waters of Greenstone, for the South Island.

A 1971 Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier signed site card is one of many items to be auctioned off at this year’s Tauranga Police CIB Charity Auction.

Peter Fitzsimmons is confirmed as the guest speaker at the 19th annual auction, on September 27 at ASB Arena.

Organiser and Tauranga Police CIB Charitable Trust trustee Detective Sergeant Pete Blackwell says it has been five years in the making securing Peter for the event.

“We are really excited about this. Our MC is yet to be confirmed.”

Pete says planning for the auction is well underway and many items have already been sourced.

“We have signed guitars from Pat Benatar, America, Bachman Turner and Ringo Star’s All Star Band.

“We are looking for good quality items which we can auction off to raise extra money for the charities.”

Tauranga Police CIB Charitable Trust is encouraging charitable organisations looking for extra money to apply to the trust before April 30 so they can chose who will

receive a portion of the money raised.

Last year’s auction saw $262,000 divided between six charities.

“Tickets are $120 each or $1200 a table. A lot of tables have already been reserved but we want to give

the public a chance to attend the event.”

Pre-charge warnings

Beach trees upkeep choices

It’s hoped reintroducing a pre-charge warning system in the Western Bay of Plenty will help unclog the court system by dealing with minor offending.

Pre-charge warnings are an option available to police where offenders apprehended for minor offending are able to be brought into the police station and released without charge.

Western Bay of Plenty area commander Inspector Clifford Paxton says victims’ views are taken into account and the warning system is not available for family violence or methamphetamine-based offending.

“It allows more time for police to focus on preventing offending and on more serious offending.

“It also reduces the pressure on the court system by removing minor offending from court.”

The pre-charge warning system was originally introduced in 2010 and police are renewing their focus on their initiative.

Nearly $200,000 of ratepayer money has been saved due to city councillors’ decision to leave Marine Parade’s Norfolk pines untouched.

The 44 Norfolk pines on Marine Parade and between Pacific Avenue and Oceanbeach Rd are pushing up kerbing and the road surface.

Options included planting new trees further from the road and cutting the mature trees back after substitutes grow – costing up to $176,000 – or building the kerb around each tree at a cost of nearly $3000 per tree and losing 132 car parks.

Councillors went for a third option – to accept the damage and manage it as best as possible.

But even this option has a cost of $2000 to $3000 per tree, every five to 10 years, for kerb and pavement repairs.

“We should hang onto them and manage them as long as we can,” says councillor Bill Faulkner.

“Marine Parade and that beach area is probably one of the leading attractions in the bay. All the photos are of that and we should do everything we can to hang onto them. Leave them alone and build around them.”

Staff say the fate of 11 of the trees is determined with their replacements

growing further back from the kerb.

The issue is up for public consultation as part of the draft Coastal Reserves Management Plan.

Heart racer Young mum’s selfless cause

After you’ve launched a business, had knee surgery and had your first child – what do you do next?

Papamoa resident Zoe Sizemore’s New Year resolution is to compete in this month’s Tauranga Half Marathon – and give back to The Heart Foundation at the same time.

The 29-year-old registered as a ‘Heart Racer’ to raise funds for the foundation while training for the Tauranga Half Marathon on April 14, which has a 21km and a 14km run, a 7km run/walk and a new fun ‘Matua Mile’.

Waking at 5.45am to pound the pavement with friend Kate Perrott, the heart racer received her own fundraising page to email updates, write a blog and upload photos.

“After having a baby I wanted to achieve something for myself so the 21km event is perfect – and becoming a heart racer is easy. There’s no door knocking or selling. I just clicked an online button.”

People have responded well to her fundraising page with $285 raised so far toward her $500 target.

Hoping to inspire young mums to get fit, for their health and their family, Zoe says it is possible.

“It’s a hard road back to fitness but with a training buddy you have to make it. And having a cause higher than yourself makes you do it – you can’t back out.”

Daily, an estimated 16 Kiwis die as result of cardiovascular disease and more people in their twenties and thirties than ever before are admitted to hospital for heart attacks.

The foundation aims to prevent death by funding medical research and providing education, resources and rehabilitation in the community.

The Tauranga Half Marathon is on April 14 from 7am at Fergusson Park.

Tiki’s home show Mount Maunganui musician Tiki Taane is “stoked” to be starting off his latest national tour in his hometown next weekend.

Tiki is touring the country with fellow acoustic artist Jayson Norris for six shows, beginning at Imbibe on April 11.

“I’m stoked. I can’t wait,” he says. “I’m really excited that it kicks off at home and hopefully I’ll get my local crew down to check it out.”

Tiki and Jayson met two years ago and played together in London last year.

“We kicked London’s arse and we were like ‘We’ve got to do this again’.”

While the pair shares different styles, Tiki says they work really well together.

“He’s definitely really more of a soul, rock, funk dude, I’m more on the reggae trip and more experimental lately, doing lots of looping.”

Kiwi-born singer Jessica Hall will open for the pair and join them in a “free for all jam” at the end of the gig.

After a busy start to 2013, Tiki has just finished mixing his new live album. It was recorded at the old St Paul’s Church in Wellington with his band, an 18-strong orchestra and a kapa haka group – a first for New Zealand’s music scene.

“It was amazing, these players are kind of like the elite string players of New Zealand, they can all read and write music, I can’t.

Here I am dealing with these people who are like incredible. I’m so stoked we caught it on about 10 cameras.

“I’m really proud of it, it looks and sounds amazing, and we have captured something really awesome.”

The live album is due for release in September this year. The acoustic tour begins April 11 at Mount Maunganui before heading to Hamilton, Kaitaia, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Golf fans have been bidding until they’re blue in the face in an attempt to get their hands on a piece of golfing history.

As part of the annual Blue September campaign raising funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand, PlaceMakers Mount Maunganui is auctioning off a professionally mounted and displayed commemorative 2011 US Open flag, signed by champion and golfing sensation Rory McIlroy on Trademe.

PlaceMakers area sales manager Nev Eades says the item was donated by a former work colleague who now caddies on the U.S.P.G.A tour.

“It was donated by Tim Butler who caddies for Australian golfer Alistair Presnell. This is a commemorative flag, not the actual 18th hole pin flag, signed

by Rory 20 minutes after his first major tournament win.

“I think it’s something that is quite unique at this end of the world.”

Blue September is the Prostate Cancer Foundation’s national awareness campaign helping raise funds for prostate cancer research. Statistics show one in 10 New Zealand men are diagnosed with prostate cancer

in their lifetime.

PlaceMakers are proud sponsors of the campaign as it aligns directly with the considerably male based building industry, says Nev. “It relates to our business and it’s fair to say 95 per cent of the people working in our industry are males.

Plus many of the builders are also keen golfers.”

Until recently Rory was the world’s number one ranked golfer, retaining the title for 32 weeks before Tiger Woods reclaimed the ranking extending his reign to 642 weeks.

The plaque on the golfing memorabilia reads: “2011 US Open Championship Pin Flag signed

by Rory McIlroy 2011 US Open Champion. The youngest US Open Champion since Bobby Jones in 1923, winning with a tournament record score of 16 under par – 268 over the four day event a performance acknowledged by many as the greatest in the tournament’s history.”

New turfs launch Tauranga players test out the city’s two new hockey turfs on Saturday at the official opening, a hockey festival.

Bird of prey in spotlight Nesting behaviour of New Zealand’s very own bird of prey will be discussed in Tauranga this month as part of Birds Bay of Plenty’s monthly meeting.

The local branch of the Ornithological Society of NZ is putting the spotlight on the nesting behaviour of New Zealand falcons in plantation forests.

“The New Zealand falcon is New Zealand’s very own bird of prey,’’ says Birds BOP spokesperson Raewyn Adams.

“On April 10, Andrew Thomas will talk about the species’ behaviour after he had the opportunity to observe falcons nesting and raising their chicks during four months of intensive research.”

The Fun Sticks, Mini Sticks and Kiwi Sticks begin playing on the beach turf at 10am, while 11-aside games take place on the port turf between intermediate teams, followed by college, college elite and masters.

Have A Go hockey, for children and adults wanting to give the game a try, will also take place on the unused portion of the beach turf, says Tauranga Hockey general manager Clyde Du Toit.

Tauranga’s three black sticks; Gemma Flynn, Sam Charlton,

Rose Keddell will attend the official launch at 2.30pm, along with Mayor Stuart Crosby and Tauranga MP Simon Bridges.

“We are also inviting all the funders,” says Clyde. “We owe them a huge thanks for the money they have put up to allow us to have this project take place and be completed. We will obviously be thanking them and celebrating their contribution, and hopefully they will enjoy it as well.”

After the official ceremony the hockey resumes on a more intense level with Bayleys Otumoetai and CMS Mount men and women teams playing.

“It’s really a hockey festival

celebrating the opening and playing on the new turfs for the first time,” says Clyde.

On Sunday, Tauranga Hockey is hosting the Midlands A Team trials. Players from the five member associations will play for positions in the Under18s.

The first international games on the new turfs will be the Black Sticks Quad Series games on April 20 and 21.

The $1.4 million project is community funded, with an $800,000 TECT grant, plus $200,000 from the Tauranga City Council and the remainder from individuals and organisations.

Hairy, beary adventures The call is going out for pre-schoolers begin an expedition to find a group of bears who are gathering for their annual adventure.

But please leave your pop guns and water pistols at home – because the morning tea event in Rotorua is a friendly Teddy Bear’s Picnic which includes story-time, singing and dancing.

The event is part of Play in the Bay’s Adventure month.

The free Teddy Bear’s Picnic is being held in Tawavale St, Rotorua, on Thursday, April 16 at 10am. Participants need to bring a bear, morning tea and a picnic rug. (For details contact Sonia Jones on 021 722 659).

Next weekend there is a chance to get adventurous closer to home, with a sea kayaking beginner course on the Tauranga

Tackling 100km trip on foot Four Holland Beckett staff will walk 100km in under 36 hours this Saturday at Lake Taupo to raise money for Oxfam – a charity working to help save and improve lives worldwide.

Held to raise funds for Oxfam’s continued efforts to fight poverty and injustice worldwide, the event asks teams to walk 100km together – with no sleep – in 36 hours or less.

Three team members have to finish the 100km trek and each member has to pass checkpoints.

Named the Hobec 100 mile Hike Club, Tauranga’s team describe themselves as “elite athletes”.

“We were born at a very young age, seemingly sculpted by the gods themselves. We’ve been training in the art or science - of walking ever since with 100 years of experience between us,” the group says.

“Our heel-to-toe timing is excellent, our posture and balance is scientifically fine-tuned and our arm-swing is impeccable. We’re ready for this trek - we welcome the Oxfam pain train.

A group of 40 ANZ bankers are swapping their pens and calculators for gardening and building tools next week.

ANZ staff Tamara Guthrie, Rob Yeoman and Graeme Judd are among 40 bankers doing maintenance work, including shifting a sandpit at Homes of Hope foster homes on Friday.

The bankers will be doing maintenance work on Homes of Hope’s three Tauranga foster homes as part of the bank’s commitment to give back to the community with voluntary work.

Homes of Hope administrator Naomi Kerapa says the work – which includes gardening, shifting sandpits and sandpapering – helps free the foster parents up to putting all their energy into caring for the children.

“Their contribution makes a huge difference for us. We always rely on volunteers from the community to help where they can.”

ANZ regional manager business banking Rob Yeoman says it is great for the team members to get out into the community to make a difference.

“It’s also a great chance for everyone to get to know each other outside of work.”

The group are rolling up their sleeves to get stuck in next Friday morning, April 12.

Bands go into battle Raised in a musical family, it was just a matter of time before Owen Cox followed the family tradition.

“It was just what everyone did. I started playing guitar when I was 12 years old and, aside from about five years when I stopped for my engineering training, I’ve been doing it ever since. It’s just what I love doing.”

On Saturday, Owen will return to Brewers Bar with bass player Craig Priestley and drummer Tom Roach, when his band Uneven Ground compete for a place in the annual Battle of the Bands contest.

At 35 years old, the guitarist-vocalist jokes about getting a little old to be a grunge-rocker.

Last year Uneven Ground made it through the Bay of Plenty heats and regionals to compete at the national finals. This year he would love to do even better, but is not losing any sleep over it and is just focussed on putting on great shows.

“I just believe get out there and have fun with your music. If you do well that’s great, but the most important thing is to enjoy it.”

After a positive response to the group’s first EP – released for free last year – they plan to release an album before summer.

“The 12 songs are sorted, they’re all written and it’s just a matter of getting them

down and the plan is to follow it up with some gigs over summer.”

Owen, who writes all the songs, compares the band’s sound to grunge-rock acts Silverchair, Nirvana or the Stone Temple Pilots.

Uneven Ground will be competing against three other bands in the first Tauranga heat of The Battle of the Bands on Saturday.

There will be two more heats during the next six weeks, before the top handful of bands compete for places at the national finals in Auckland in late June.

The top band wins recording, production and promotional support.

Piping hot It’s taken six years to grow the Te Puke & District Highland Pipe Band from two members to a fullfledged group getting ready for the competition scene.

Now sporting eight pipers, six side drummers, two tenor drummers, a bass drummer and a drum major, the band has a special interest in training youth and has a number of upcoming players training for the Christmas parade this year.

The majority of the drum corps are trained through the band’s free tutor programme with several more youngsters yet to advance from practice pad to drum.

Pipe Major Sue Muir says she considers it an honour to represent her hometown of Te Puke and provide young people, from all social backgrounds, with an opportunity to learn an “integral link to our cultural ancestry”.

“By providing free tuition, instruments and uniforms there is no financial barrier for the less fortunate youngsters to join the team where all age groups can participate.

“The band encourages family support and has for families, who have more than one member in the band, including some parents.”

The band recently performed in a non-competitive performance at the Rotorua Pipe Band Street March – a practise prior to the band re-launching onto the competition circuit later this year.

Mount mixed media artist Jenny Grant organised for `Paint Mojo’ by Tracy Verdugo to be held at a private studio in Papamoa on May 11 and 12.

“Tracy will teach you how to find your own flow which she calls `mojo’. It will be all about intuition and losing your inner critic and finding your own creativity.”

As result, the event is open to anyone from professional artists to those who have never painted before.

Jenny discovered Tracy’s work online and invited her to host the workshop.

“It is about how to be inspired, being brave, listening to your intuition and having an open mind.”

The never ending story of the walkway Following on from last week’s column, the seemingly never ending story of the Pilot Bay walkway continued at the Strategy and Policy Committee.

A speaker told elected members in the public forum that there hadn’t been enough time for public consultation and asked for even more time. The speaker said that Pilot Bay was the last piece of family friendly space at the Mount.

Really? I thought the entire Mount was totally family friendly! From some elected members’ point of view, consultation has been on-going for almost a year. And consultation is just that. The design has been and is being altered on an on-going basis.

Monday, April 8 will be final design decision day and then the walkway needs to be built quickly. The decision to actually build a walkway was made late last year.

Proposals seem sensible and practical and when they’re done most

will wonder, like the Ocean Beach walkway, why it hadn’t been done sooner. By the way, a petition received about the walkway has apparently been signed by Rick Curach.

Despite originally voting in support of the walkway, this now disqualifies Rick from voting further in the issue.

Another speaker in the public forum suggested a Rotary Club project to build a gravel cycle/ walkway, from Logan Rd to Taylor Reserve at Papamoa, on an existing worn track through the dunes. That should get some people going too, but elected members saw photos of similar tracks along the coast making the areas more accessible to more people. Rick Curach said part of the experience of walking his dog was the sand between his toes.

Elected members heard submissions to council’s Draft Smokefree Places Policy. Before some of you get up in arms about this proposal it is advisory, educational and voluntary. If you really have to light up a cigarette on council-owned places it is unlikely you would be prosecuted. And it’s on that basis that most

of us supported the intent of the policy.

In my lifetime smoking has gone from a mainstream accepted ritual to a socially-unacceptable, revolting habit, to most people. My mum and dad both smoked. Both had been in the Air Force during WWII and had been issued free cigarettes. I saw dad quit one day when he threw a packet out of the car window and said he wouldn’t ever smoke again – and he didn’t. Mum smoked the rest of her life with little effect on her health. Us kids suffered in silence and none of the three of us ever smoked so I understand both sides of the argument. Once hooked it is hard to quit.

Cigarette clean up

One submitter told elected members that in Southport Queensland, children had done a clean up and picked up 52kg of cigarette butts in a day. Larry Baldock, in a lighter moment, reflected that as a teenage smoker he had done that just to get another smoke.

Oh dear! Larry is now a non-smoker. As are most elected members although some admit to the occasional social smoke. Smoking is a dying habit and is rightly, in my view, being actively discouraged. Yes, there are other scourges to health that need attention too, but one thing at a time.

Commercial activities on council reserves will be more controlled. Limits will be imposed on various sports reserves to ensure that free-for-all situations don’t develop. Vendors will tender for allocated space and limits will be enforced to ensure a fair distribution of licences so that a monopoly situation isn’t created.

The Avenues

A review of the Coastal Reserves Management Plan is proposed. As luck would have it Issue 5 is Pilot Bay. A reserve management plan outlines what can and cannot happen on reserves. Other issues to be discussed – with you via the consultative process – include Marine Parade and the trees, dune restoration, freedom camping and additional tree planting.

The Bluebiyou Restaurant’s lease at Papamoa and Papamoa Surf Club’s building proposal were discussed. Some people get a little precious about buildings on reserves.

In New Zealand it seems some are too keen to keep the coast clear of buildings when doing so can deprive many people from enjoying the vista. What’s wrong with a restaurant on a reserve? It allows many people access to the reserve out of wind and weather.

Not everyone is a gung-ho beachgoer. And, proposed extensions to the Surf Club will provide further amenities for the Papamoa community. Extensions will also allow the Surf Club to gain more income to fund their club activities which is a way to selfsufficiency in funding – much better than calling on ratepayers. When the draft plan is being reviewed, your submissions will be invited.

The pony club lease at Papamoa will also be rolled over on a year-by-year basis.

Trustpower awards

On behalf of the Mayor, I recently attended the Trustpower National Community Awards. It is a really positive, encouraging and enabling initiative

by Trustpower for volunteer sectors of communities throughout New Zealand. Twentyfour finalists were judged by a panel, of judges 50 per cent and their peers another 50 per cent. After daily doses of negativity through the media it really is uplifting hearing the eight minute presentations from finalists on how they made a voluntary difference to their community.

Our local finalist was Age Concern, an organisation of 150 volunteers making a huge difference to many isolated and vulnerable people in our city.

Tauranga has many lonely people and contact through Age Concern can be a really life changing experience for these people. The winner was Kaibosh from Wellington, an organisation that collects leftover food from commercial operators like restaurants and supermarkets, on a daily basis, and distributes the food to 21 charities who deliver it to needy recipients.

John Key comes to Tauranga Revising the RMA (again) It was great to have the Prime Minister in Tauranga this week.

We had a busy day where the PM opened the Port of Tauranga’s berth extension and commissioned its new Liebherr gantry crane and met with a number of local business people and young achievers. His schedules are relentless and he does a great job for New Zealand. I’ve also been busy in Tauranga and beyond. Last week, as Minister of Energy and Resources, I announced the Government’s plans to strengthen protections for offshore petroleum and minerals activity through the establishment of two new criminal offences involving intentional damage to and interference with offshore mining structures and vessels.

Such disruptive activities need to be deterred because they are dangerous and aimed at stopping others going about their lawful business. In my short time in this area I have learned what a great industry it is, creating many very high value jobs for New Zealanders.

While on the subject of jobs, latest statistics show that the economy grew three per cent in the calendar year 2012, comparable to Australia’s 3.1 per cent growth. We’re well ahead of the United States with 1.6 per cent growth, 0.3 per cent in the UK, and negative 0.9 per cent in the Euro area.

Manufacturing in New Zealand grew 2.7 per cent in 2012 and exports were up 2.1 per cent.

And spending on research and development by New Zealand businesses reached $1.2 billion in 2012 – up almost 25 per cent since 2010. In its annual check-up of our country’s health, the International Monetary Fund has just given the tick of approval to National’s responsible management of the Government’s finances, one of our priorities this term.

The IMF says we’re getting it right with our balanced approach to supporting growth and reducing public debt. So while opposition parties are trying to talk New Zealand down and say no to jobs, National is moving to put the economy on a more competitive footing. In particular, we have embarked on more than 300 initiatives to build export markets, innovation, skills, capital markets, infrastructure, and better access to our natural resources, as part of our Business Growth Agenda.

This is helping give businesses the confidence to invest, grow, and hire new staff.

Real growth doesn’t happen until one more business invests another dollar, sells a better product or service, and hires another person.

In addition, our sensible fiscal and monetary policy is helping to keep interest rates and inflation low, which is benefitting businesses and households.

Like many sectors our artists and dealer galleries are finding the present economic realities difficult.

In addition to this Tauranga is a relatively young city with a small population. Although we have many keen hardworking supporters of the visual arts we still can’t accurately be described as a fantastically vibrant art destination at this point in time. Making Tauranga an art rich city where an art market is a player and contributing even more to the economic well-being of the city is a work in progress. What is needed is a cooperative approach by the dealer galleries to create an art market in Tauranga. I have already seen encouraging instances of this and applaud those who are proving to be open minded and progressive in their thinking. The out-moded model of galleries competing with each other and jealously guarding a ‘stable’ of artists may not be the

best approach in a small city.

Water: a team effort

Water is one topic that’s always popular and often contentious.

Freshwater management is a significant issue for many agencies, including the Bay of Plenty Regional Council.

We believe working together is the way to go. Two recent events back that – a water expo where 200 children got hands on with water, and people signing on as a ‘friend’ to the Sustainable Dairying Water Accord.

The water expo was a team effort. We hosted it, with support from the Enviroschools Foundation, Tauranga, Rotorua and Western Bay councils, New Zealand Landcare Trust and the Department of Conservation.

Children from 16 schools learned about water issues and responsible

use of this precious resource. They got up close to eels, identified insects as a measure of water quality, and designed fences and planting to protect waterways.

By signing up as a ‘friend’ to the new Sustainable Dairying Water Accord, we’ve committed to helping the dairy sector achieve clean and healthy water in dairying areas.

The dairying sector must lead industry self-improvement, but we’ll work with them. The accord’s actions won’t always be enough to meet our rules and limits, so we’ll continue with our programmes and actions and we will enforce compliance where it is needed.

By working with the current and next generation of landowners, water users and farmers we hope to instil a sense of awareness and knowledge – and give them real skills to take back to their communities.

Western Bay District Council in trouble Western Bay of Plenty District Council has sunk to the bottom group of 11 “cellar dwellers” in the comprehensive 2013 New Zealand Council Ranked League Table.

The table ranks councils on their financial sustainability and the affordability of their council rates and charges. WBOPDC has dropped from 42nd to 58th out of 67 councils since last year. This puts the council in a group described in the report as “councils (that) struggle either due to their poor financial condition and/or

their unfavourable scale/demographics.

They will all experience difficulties in servicing even the basic needs of their citizens as a result of their past maladministration ... or straight out profligacy and/or as a consequence of local community unaffordability issues.”

Statistically, both Western Bay’s population and community affordability score are above the national average. WBOPDC is in trouble and is unwilling to change or admit failure but is determined to keep pushing rates up for at least the next five years to cover their tracks.

Monitoring local government regulations Who is monitoring our local government regulators?

Central Government is committed to making big gains in efficiency and effectiveness in local government.

Minister Amy Adams has launched two serious pieces of work, including the discussion papers ‘Improving Our Resource Management System’ and ‘Freshwater Reform 2013 and Beyond’. The proposed RMA reforms are bold, ambitious and long overdue. Our left wing activists are bleating, but New Zealanders are sick of paying such a high cost of compliance, and it is great to see a pragmatic approach being taken to the consenting system.

The problem with the first round of National’s restructuring was that some in local government just manipulated their data to ensure compliance. When then Minister Dr Nick Smith introduced a tightening of consent timeframes, some

local councils just increased the number of consents deemed “non-notified”. Taking our regional council as an example – in the six months to mid January 2013 they required only three consent requests to go to a hearing (1.4 per cent of the total of 211). By comparison for roughly the same period in 2010 the percentage of “Notified” and “Limited notified” decisions was more than 8 per cent of all decisions issued. This certainly streamlined the consenting process and makes the regional council look to be making effective and efficient outcomes – but does reducing hearings from more than 8 per cent of applications to just 1.4 per cent necessarily benefit the environment. Hopefully it does but my question is how closely are our elected representatives monitoring to ensure this?

Proposed changes to environmental funding The Bay of Plenty Regional Council established the Environmental Enhancement Fund in 2000 to assist communities undertaking projects to enhance the environment. The fund provides seed funding for community-based projects that improve the environment and raise environmental awareness, and use the enthusiasm and skills of the community. To date, more than $7.5million has been distributed to nearly 500 environmental enhancement projects across the region. In 2012, about 26,750 volunteer hours went into EEF projects equating to a dollar value of about $401,250. So, for every $10 allocated to EEF projects – the region

benefited from a further $16 worth of volunteer work.

The regional council is implementing a ‘Doing Business Better’ programme to ensure all parts of council are operating at maximum effectiveness for the same or lower costs. The EEF was recently reviewed with this in mind. Changes to the fund have been proposed, which include removal of the contestable stage for the fund to enable applications to be accepted all year round beginning July 1, this year. Instead of a sub-committee of council, it is proposed that staff be given responsibility for making decisions on funding allocations within their broader council delegated limits.

Historic playground knocked down Plans to knock down the historic senior playground at Mount Maunganui Primary School are underway.

The existing wooden playground is set to be replaced with a modern version for the senior students to play on.

Mount Maunganui mother Rachel Cade remembers the playground being built when she was a student at Mount Primary in the late 1970s and says it’s a shame it’s being torn down.

playground. There were bars and all that, but it was a bit of a new concept back then.

“It was called an adventure playground. Some of those things have been added over time, like the metal bars, but the first original playground - the first sort of tower block, is all wood.”

Today, nearly 40 years on, her two children enjoy playing on the playground.

Rachel can’t remember her

favourite part of the playground but says her children’s favourite is probably the slide.

“My kids play all over it. I would be happy for it to stay, we spend a lot of time over there.”

Principal Damien Harris is expecting the new playground to arrive at the end of this month and is seeking helpers to assist in assembling the new design when it arrives.

Needed PJs warm hearts of foster kids Any size, any colour, flannelette, cotton or polyester – one Tauranga woman wants to get her hands on as many pairs of kids’ pyjamas as possible.

But most-needed, are sizes to fit children under the age of five, says Katrina Bain, who last year set up the Tauranga branch of the Foster Hope charity.

She stepped into her role after discovering thousands of New Zealand children are put into foster care each year, with many arriving at their new homes in the middle of the night with nothing but the clothes on their backs. The Pyjamas Drive sees donated pairs collected and distributed to foster homes.

“At present I know many children being uplifted are the younger ones and they come to homes with nothing but the clothes on their back. Teens tend to have some of their own possessions.”

For the second annual drive, Katrina says the organisation has doubled the amount of pyjamas it wants to collect to 2000 – with new branches in Northland, central North Island (Rotorua and Taupo) and Blen-

Also new is the collection of summer pyjamas, with feedback suggesting winter pyjamas are too uncomfortable for those placed during summer months. Last year, the Tauranga branch gave pyjamas to local homes but Katrina says if more are collected this time, she will extend the distribution to smaller Bay of Plenty towns and communities.

About 5000 children live in foster homes at any one time in New Zealand, and many children who need a family have experienced some degree of physical, emotional or sexual abuse and neglect.

Members of 17 voluntary environmental projects from around Bay of Plenty were joined by representatives from academia, local authorities and the Department of Conservation at the successful ‘Flaxroots’ environmental conference held in Tauranga on March 23.

The event, hosted by Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, featured keynote talks from Maori storyteller Joe Harawira on the importance of relationships, and from environmental scientist Dr Mike Joy on the freshwater crisis in New Zealand.

These were supported by presentations on how to set up and run your own group, and how to run a restoration project. Feedback from conference attendees has been positive. Attendee Ruth McLean from Whakamarama says “Thanks to the generosity and knowledge of the presenters, and the vision

and skills of the event organisers, I feel much better informed and inspired to get involved in environmental volunteering”.

This event was the first of its kind in our region, and a representative of the organising team, Pete Huggins from DOC, says the success may be repeated.

“This was a collaboration between Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Western Bay of Plenty District Council, New Zealand Landcare Trust and DOC. It took a lot of organising but there is an appetite for more, especially for the networking that people can do at an event like this.

“So we will look at organising perhaps a smaller scale event in the near future and a full conference in a couple of years’ time – or sooner – if there is demand.

Tidying up autumn gardens, preparing for winter and planting bulbs for spring You may have taken the opportunity over Easter weekend to get into the garden and start some tidying up before winter.

For most keen gardeners this is usually the time to start that autumn clean-up, and with daylight savings about to finish we will soon get that autumn feeling as the months cool down.

Tidy time

So make the most of any sunny spells to hoe the garden, so that the weeds wilt in the sun, because as the ground gets wetter this job becomes more difficult – even a small shower of rain can water in the weeds again.

Tidy up the veggie garden, harvest the last of your summer vegetables – pumpkins, marrows, potatoes and onions, and store in a cool dry place for use during the winter. The garden shed is an ideal spot for this.

The veggie plot can be very productive during the winter, so now is the time to sow winter crops of beetroot, broad beans, cabbage, carrots, swedes and turnips. Also, buy or raise your own brassica plants to plant directly into the ground – most brassicas do better in the cooler months. Carry on growing winter varieties of lettuce under polythene tunnels.

If you do not wish to carry on growing vegetables during winter, the best idea is to sow a green manure crop such as Lupin or Mustard.

This can be sown now by spreading the seed by hand over the ground, a mixture of the two is good, and then rake well into the surface.

Leave over winter and dig into the soil before the lupin flowers – if it is left any longer it can start to go woody and takes longer to break down in the soil.

The green manure puts nitrogen into the soil plus organic matter.

April is the best time of year to sow a new lawn, the temperature is still reasonable and the moisture (fingers crossed) is usually okay for a good germination. Preparation of the ground and a good seed are the main ingredi-

ents to a great new lawn.

Don’t forget that autumn is the best time of year to move plants around the garden or to plant new plants. This gives them plenty of time to establish a root system before next summer.

Tidy up the flower garden by cutting back dead flowers and don’t forget that it is now time to plant bulbs for the spring but make sure you mark where you plant them with a stick – otherwise you may forget and plant something else in the same spot.

Vegetarian food captures diners’ attention A delicious medley of stuffed seasonal vegetables and a saffron infused broth won Mount Bistro the winning title of the inaugural Vegetarian Afare.

Less than one per cent of votes separated the final top two scores, determined by the public who completed a judging form after trying each contending meal.

More than 137 vegetarian meals were consumed during the competition, which spanned across four

The competition, with the tag line ‘cheat on your meat’, was designed to provoke creativity for vegetarian dishes being served at mainstream restaurants as well as show demand exists for wholesome, creative and mouth watering vegetarian meals.

There was very little separating Mount Bistro and runner up The Drawing Room, both restaurants receiving incredibly high scores, says Jo. All participating restaurants received high accolades for their creations.

Jo’s idea for the competition arose from a lack of vegetarian options when dining out.

“I just decided to see what would happen if we created some excitement for vegetarian food, and all four restaurants got right behind the idea.”

Sensational seasonal treats I certainly enjoyed the figs a friend gave me the other day, so when I spied Claire’s fig recipe a thought crossed my mind.

If I used the portion of the Mt Eliza blue cheese I just brought at Tauranga Farmers Market then I would have a few grilled figs for supper with a glass of wine at the end of the day.

My plans changed as the days rolled by... and now I’ve actually opened the red wine and eaten my first grilled fresh figs dolloped with Mount Eliza blue cheese drizzled with honey and blistered under the grill – they are astonishing.

Culinary combinations like this collide on your palate like several lovers in the dark but I felt the need

for some texture and crunch.

Memories of trees laden with bird-tempting dark purple figs hanging from trees dotted around the villages in Greece.

It also reminded me of the honey-soaked pastries I often ate as an after work snack, they were sprinkled with nuts and sesame seeds that were called xerotigana honey-dipped spiral pastries.

So this week the seasonal taste treat sensation is a combination of local honey, figs and blue cheese sourced from the farmers market.

The rounded blue cheese flavour, caramelised figs and honey with the texture of the nutty spiral pastry is another culinary match that transports you to a higher level of enjoyment.

Grilled Figs and Blue Cheese with honey dipped pastry spirals 12-15 snack size portions.

Ingredients 12-15 fresh ripe figs 50-80g Mount Eliza blue cheese 2-3 Tbsp Manuka honey

Syrup 1 cup sugar 1 cup honey 1 cup water 1 cinnamon stick

Dough 6 cups flour 2/3 cup mixed lemon and orange juice 2/3 cup olive oil 1 cup plus 2 Tbsp water

Topping ¼ cup toasted sesame seeds ¼ cup finely chopped walnuts 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon Good quality oil for frying

Method Combine the six cups of flour and the remaining dough ingredients in a large bowl and knead well for five minutes. Add more flour as required to make a smooth, firm dough. Allow to rest for half an hour and prepare the syrup by boiling all the ingredients together for 15 minutes. Keep warm on a low heat without boiling.

After dividing the dough into fist sized pieces, roll out pastry into thin long strips – if you have a fluted pastry wheel use it for the edges. Strips should be 20cm long and 5cm wide. A pasta machine is recommended to get the pastry as thin as possible. Loop the strips around two fingers and roll into a loose spiral shape. Drop into hot oil a few at a time until golden brown, then twist while frying with a carving fork or similar. Drain on kitchen towel then drop in hot steamy syrup. Keep temperature up if needed and remove with a slotted spoon. Sprinkle with cinnamon and nut mixture.

Cut the figs in half then place a small slit in each. Fill with small amount of blue cheese and drizzle with honey then bake under grill for four to six minutes. Serve with the honey dipped pastries and a spoon of yoghurt – yum.

Cat-borne disease more serious than thought Acute toxoplasmosis, an infectious disease carried by cats, may be a more severe illness than previously understood, according to recent research from The University of Auckland.

About 40 per cent of New Zealanders are infected with toxoplasmosis at some time in their lives. The disease begins with an acute phase lasting typically for six to eight weeks and continues as a chronic infection, normally without obvious symptoms that cannot be cured.

“While chronic toxoplasmosis has been shown to have a strong association with conditions affecting the brain such as schizophrenia, and with suicide and selfharming behaviour, the disease in its acute phase has usually been seen as a benign, trivial and self-healing illness,” says associate professor Mark Thomas from the Department of Molecular Medicine and Pathology.

Mark, also an infectious diseases physician at Auckland City Hospital, where he has cared for many patients with toxoplasmosis, said the aim of the recent study was to investigate the neuropsychiatric effects of acute toxoplasmosis.

“We were surprised, when the results came in, to discover how common it was for patients to report significant and prolonged symptoms such as impaired memory and concentration, headaches and extreme fatigue.” The study was based on a questionnaire completed by adults who had been diagnosed with acute toxoplasmosis in Auckland in 2011.

Of the 31 patients, 90 per cent reported fatigue (persisting for a median duration of six weeks), 74 per cent reported headaches and 52 per cent found they had difficulty in concentrat-

Shellfish poisoning warning continues in Bay The risk of paralytic shellfish toxin poisoning remains high and residents are asked to continue caution.

Medical officer of health Dr Neil de Wet says shellfish in the affected areas should not be taken or eaten.

The current health warning has been in place since August 2012, with a focus on the collection of shellfish from Tairua Harbour as well as Tauranga Harbour, Maketu and Waihi estuaries, Matakana and Motiti Islands, and all other islands along this coastline, as well as the Bay of Plenty coast to Whakatane Heads in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

Consumption of shellfish affected by the paralytic shellfish toxin can cause numbness and tingling around the mouth, face, hands and feet, difficulty swallowing or breathing, dizziness, double vision, and in severe cases, paralysis and respiratory failure.

Otumoetai College students row hard for cancer mother battle with cancer for 11 years. Cancer claimed the lives of Lauren’s grandparents. Courtney, who is a member of Canteen, says motivation came from watching her older sister undergo more than 600 cancer prevention treatments, including MRI scans and biopsies.

The girls are training six days a week incorporating on the water and land-based training into their fitness routine. Although the girls are used to training for 1-2hours without

stopping, the pair says they have never rowed in anything like this before.

“It’s going to be lots of hard work but we can do it.”

Command saving lives

“Leave it.” – These two little words can be a lifesaver for your dog, literally.

Dogs are well known for putting things in their mouth first and thinking about it later (if at all).

Chocolate, toys, your best shoes, the remote control, cat poo, a pill you dropped, rat bait, a stinky dead fish at the beach...why just this week we had a dog brought in with not one but two fish hooks stuck in her oesophagus. We were able to remove these with the endoscope.

Many other items require surgery to remove, or a few days in hospital treating the side effects of poisoning – and a significant bill if you don’t have insurance.

Some items (for example, poo), makes your beloved pets’ kisses less appealing, but can also give them, and us, worms.

Why do dogs eat these things? Yes, they do have different taste buds from us. Sometimes they chew

it because it tastes like you: their favourite person in the world, or because it’s a fun game, like the labrador that needed surgery to remove stones from its intestines.

As a dog owner, the best thing you can do is teach them the “Leave it” command. Just like “Sit”, “Come” and “Stay”, this is a very valuable tool.

Make a game of it. Line up a few favourite items on the lawn and fill your pocket with tasty rewards. Pop a leash on your dog and walk them past the tempting treasures. Allow them to take one or two, while saying “Get it” or “OKAY”. Then make them walk by other items while saying “Leave it”, and reward them with a treat from your pocket.

Little litters of love The call is going out again for more homes to adopt kittens or house-trained adult cats which Tauranga’s ARRC Wildlife Trust need to rehome.

Trust coordinator Sue Mackey says they are continuing to receive kittens from Tauranga’s wild cat population, which have all been hand-raised in foster homes and are de-sexed, flea-free, wormed and vetchecked.

“All these kittens have been born in the wild, but because

they have been fostered until 12-14 weeks they are ready to make perfect pets.

“The kitten numbers are continuing to grow and we still have lots of adult cats that would make fantastic pets.”

ARRC has been collecting strays following the launch of its ‘Spay the Stray’ campaign in January.

Pets at risk of faulty microchips Vets are warning pet owners to have their dogs’ microchips checked after being alerted to a faulty batch.

We have no news this week, probably due to the fact that cousin Rosie and I have been too busy gallivanting around the

Letters were sent to select pet owners informing them they would need to return to their veterinarian to have their pet’s microchip replaced at no cost late last month.

Bayfair Vets senior veterinarian Paul Greeves says vets received notification from their supplier Virbac informing them of the faulty batch.

“We have done the responsible thing and notified our clients of the fault. We are checking microchips in general in case it is more widespread.”

All dogs registered for the first time are required to be microchipped as part of dog control measures introduced in

2006. A microchip, costing $80 to be inserted, allows easy identification of the dog.

Paul says since the letters and emails were sent about two weeks ago they have been inundated with people bringing their pets to be checked.

“A lot have been faulty and we have had to replace them.

“It has been a lot of work to readjust the chip numbers on the data files.” Dogs and cats are not physically affected by the faulty microchips, but their failure to scan means they are more at risk of getting lost.

“We run the scanner over and if it doesn’t beep, then it’s not registering. We insert a new one under the skin between the shoulder blades. It’s like a big injection.”

Tauranga City Council dog control officer Brent Lincoln says dogs picked up roaming with a faulty microchip will be taken to the pound if they don’t have a registration tag.

“If the chip’s faulty we don’t get a reading. Then we don’t know who owns it, so we would put it in the pound, the owner would contact us and then we would take it from there.

“We would re-chip the dog before it leaves the pound.”

Brent says they have picked up two or three dogs with faulty microchips in the past year.

Paul says this is not the first time there has been a faulty batch.

A spokesperson for Virbac was reluctant to comment but says sometimes faults do occur in the manufacturing process. He says there is no harm to the animals but the microchips need to be replaced.

He refused to say how many faulty microchips were released and how frequently faults occur. Paul says vets are being reimbursed by Virbac for work to replace the microchips.

Volunteering appointment Volunteer Western Bay of Plenty’s trust committee has appointed a new centre manager in a move treasurer Andrew von Dadelszen describes as exciting for the organisation.

Andrew says the organisation, which supports the volunteer sector, will benefit from Janine Branson’s eight years’ experience at the St Chads Communication

Centre in Rotorua when she starts on April 15.

A new event emerging in the sporting business calendar, the games on April 19-21 will see teams compete in many sport codes for prestigious awards and medals.

Games director Anna Wilson says the event provides three days of organised sport and competition.

As well as combining sport, business and tourism, the games also give back to the community, and where possible, use sport clubs or schools to host events.

The 10km Trail Run & Walk will raise money for the local school organising the event and competitors can donate part of their entry fee to their own charity or school when they enter online.

Organisers are already planning and looking to 2014’s event and welcome teams from across the North Island.

‘I’m gonna work ’til I die’ - or are you?

One of my favourite ads on the radio at the moment from one of the banks has a song that goes ‘I’m gonna work ’til I die’.

It makes me laugh, but it also highlights how important financial planning is.

Most people I talk to actually will work past 65, some to 70 years old, others beyond that. Personally, I have no issue with this and the most common reason is that they feel they need something to do to fill in time.

The key of course, is they are making a conscious decision to do so. However, what if they had a couple of million dollars in assets over and above the value of their family home? Based on what people often say to me, which is if they won lotto they would

stop work immediately, I think the answer is that people would retire earlier if they had significant assets.

You can’t just happen upon these assets, it is going to require financial planning. Another thought comes to mind that if the government changes the age that one has to be before you can receive NZ superannuation, how does that affect your plans?

Most people that I speak with actually believe the age for Super should be 67, or even 70. Once again this is just something to take into account when you are doing that planning with your financial planner.

If you want to work until you die, that’s okay.

But make sure it is your choice, that is to say it is part of your master plan, and not forced upon you by circumstances.

Leading sceptic headlines national climate tour Controversial British author, journalist, politician and leading climate sceptic Lord Christopher Monckton will headline the Climate of Freedom Tour coming to Tauranga on Tuesday, April 9 at Bureta Park.

Christopher, who worked for Margaret Thatcher’s Number 10 Policy Unit during the 1980s, is travelling the country with the tour, put on by the Climate Realists New Zealand Network.

In recent years he has come to public attention for holding sceptical views about man-made climate change and has authored more than 100 papers on the climate issue for the layman.

His 8000-word paper ‘Climate Sensitivity Reconsidered’ shows a doubling of CO2 concentration, expected by 2100, will probably be harmless by causing one degree celsius of warming.

Organiser Esther Henderson says the audience can expect to hear factual scientific information about the changing climate not currently presented in mainstream media.

“They can expect to have some of their pre-conceived ideas about global warming challenged and to be given cause to question the motives behind New Zealand’s Emissions Trading Scheme.”

She says Christopher is an extremely intelligent, articulate speaker with a very firm grasp of the facts in this area. “He is witty and entertaining, and his commitment to the cause of spreading truth about our changing climate is such that he asks no fee for his appearances, enabling us to charge minimal admission in order to run this nationwide tour at cost.

“Tauranga residents can come and hear a presentation which is based on fact, not fantasy, given by a man who has no vested interest in making money from the climate scare.”

New Justice Service Centre opens in Mount Maunganui The Bay of Plenty Justices of the Peace Association is opening a new Justice Service Centre at Mount Maunganui Library on Friday, April 12 at 11.30am.

This centre joins 14 others scattered around the district.

McAlonan says Tauranga was the first place to begin the service centre idea after they found people were more comfortable visiting a venue such as a library, church or Citizen Advice Bureau rather than visiting a JP at their home – although that option is still available.

“The new service centre – along with 14 others scattered from Katikati to Te Puke and everywhere in between – offers

even more of a variety of operation times.

Each is open two hours, one day each week to fit with differing needs of members of the community.”

Raewyn, a Justice of the Peace for 30 years, says the centres offer a range of services including verifying and signing copies of true documents, taking declarations and affidavits and witnessing signatures on docu-

ments. Photograph identification is required.

“All centre’s JP services are also free of charge.” Raewyn says centre venues, services and open hours are available on their website for those who wish to source information online.

Road alerts to your inbox Avoiding major delays is expected to be easier with the release of the NZ Transport Agency’s latest website app that sends out alerts on routes drivers plan to travel.

The On The Move website, launched before Easter, allows people to plot their favourite routes or regions and register for issues they wish to receive alerts about.

Promotional material says the system is “all about giving people a heads-up about what’s happening on the state highway network”, which

will encourage travellers to make smart choices such as delaying the journey or using a different route.

Alerts will only be given for significant road and driving conditions likely to cause delays – including major accidents, severe weather conditions or road works. On The Move only covers the state highway network.

NZTA stresses it is not an excuse to use your smart phone while travelling, saying if drivers want to check for updates on a journey they should pull over or get a passenger to do so.

Cody, who had a series of top finishes at each of the earlier three rounds, finished with another hat-trick of wins in Taupo on Sunday – taking his total wins to nine from 12 starts.

The 29-year-old’s stellar season saw him finish the series a stunning 48 points ahead of the runner-up rider – Scottish former Grand Prix star Billy MacKenzie.

Fellow Mount-based Suzuki team mate Rhys Carter also had an impressive day on the track in Taupo.

He finished second in the MX2 class on the day to earn him third place for the season – only two points behind runner-up Brock Winston.

Cody credits part of his success to work with a new personal trainer and is now turning his attention to prepare for the Australian season which launches in a week.

Rally car debut for Campbell All eyes are on Tauranga rally driver Phil Campbell this weekend when he makes his highly anticipated debut in his new Ford Fiesta R2 at Rally Otago.

Tauranga’s top rally driver says after two seasons campaigning in his older Ford Fiesta ST (group N ‘production class’) he was keen to put his new car through its paces in the opening round of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship series.

Wake up, New Zealand!

New Zealanders need to sit up and be warned about the upcoming constitutional review which is being quietly put together by the Maori Party and is being funded by us, the taxpayers, to the tune of $4 million given to them by the National Party.

There is only one agenda in this review and that is to entrench the Treaty of Waitangi as supreme law.

July 1st is the date for submissions to close. It was previously some date in September which makes me wonder if the racially-biased Constitutional Advisory Panel are getting antsy that the half-asleep public may wake up to what is really happening behind the closed door of the Maori Party.

Dr. Brian McDonnell, a Maori academic of Tuhoe descent, is very much against this constitutional review.

He states “I do not want a constitution that creates two classes of citizenship based on the order in which one’s ances-

tors migrated to this land. I feel that any further official status given to the treaty will have a toxic effect on New Zealand’s future as a modern, progressive, evolving democratic nation.”

Overseas experts are warning that the separatist agenda of the review panel will end democracy as it will be irreversible. It will be set in stone – for ever!

Fallen natives could fund DOC I think Al Morrison, Head of Department of Conservation, is better at spin than the Prime Minister when he recently said that the axing of 140 jobs will mean more conservation not less - yeah right. As a result of the Rena wildlife recovery 18 months ago I was privileged to have met so many committed DOC personnel that came to our shores from around the country who sadly will soon be lost.

There is a solution to the DOC’s financial woes - every year hundreds of hardwood giants fall over through storm and weakness. During my involvement as a volunteer at Otanewainuku over the past 10 years, I have seen up to 20 giant Rimu’s come down.

Is it not better to heavy lift helicopter out 50% of that wood mass per tree for the return to then fund needed conservation, than to let it rot releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere? The CO2 that would be released anyway through

decomposition would be a lot greater than that expended to salvage 50% of the timber. The 50% of wood mass left behind would be more than adequate for soil and biomass sustainability.

As for the return before outgoings, I am advised the retail value of a mature Rimu is $100,000 or $50,000 wholesale.

There could potentially be a $50 million return annually throughout the DOC Estate. As far as I’m aware, no cost benefit analysis has been done and this needs to occur so that past funding to protect our endangered species is preserved and potentially expanded.

Two years ago I harvested by permit a giant storm blown Tawa tree in our protected Queen Elizabeth II National Trust property, so this way is a solution needing public debate between the pragmatic conservationists like myself and the purists.

While pohutukawas can lessen erosion when growing at water level, they can enhance erosion when they are on cliffs. You do not need a degree to see wherever pohutukawas are growing on cliffs around our harbour there is severe erosion occurring. Their root system puts down a sheet of fine roots that blow off large slabs of cliff face. This is very evident even with a quick inspection. If you do not want to get your feet wet around the harbour edge, in places like Maungatapu, then check out the cliffs on the roadside in Matata.

I find it then astounding to see the council have planted Pohutukawas on the cliff edge reserve east of the Maungatapu Bridge right where they have signs saying “Danger – slip area.” This will cause the disappearance of this land over the next 50 years and the deposition of thousands of tons of silt into the harbour with all its ill effects. Could this be book learning exceeding commonsense observation?

Those sudden catastrophes The letter “Climate Change” by Ian Maclean [The Sun 28 March] typifies the broad, unsubstantiated statements so often used by the climate change doomsday people. What is the justification for stating that “storm surges will become catastrophic” ?

The history of our Earth’s climate over its long past, shows many changes in climate, and no doubt there will be changes in the future, but the record suggests that large movements occur only over very long periods of time and sudden catastrophes are not necessarily in our immediate future.

Ian Maclean’s letter appears to be another attempt to cause fear and apprehension in our community.

There is no “true wording” only interpretation that is extracted and acted upon in accordance with the documents three articles. There is of course more than one treaty, Te Tiriti o Waitangi allowed the English to come here and live without interference, the so called “real” Treaty of Waitangi asked for the sovereignty of Maori to be relinquished and conceptually extinguished for all purposes. This is the power/curse of the English Treaty. These distortions may be seen as interpretations and vice versa depending on your point of view. Unfortunately for Maori

A Tauranga woman is facing a careless driving causing death charge for the death of 84-year-old woman Velma Rereao Zandstra. Velma died at the scene after being hit by a vehicle backing out of a driveway in Bellevue on October 10. Renee Marie Jones, 34, appeared in the Tauranga Registrar’s Court Thursday, March 28, supported by her and Velma’s family. She was remanded on bail and will reappear in court on April 11. The accused is yet to enter a plea on the charge.

Parents call for improved safety

A UK coroner is backing Bay of Plenty Coroner Wallace Bain’s recommendations concerning quad bike accidents following an inquest into the death of British student Tom Sewell in Katikati in 2008.

The 19-year-old was killed in a quad bike accident during his first day of a working holiday on a farm.

Tom’s parents hope employers will take more responsibility and be accountable for their employees’ safety and, where they fall short, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (formerly the Department of Labour) should proactively be taking punitive action.

Pizza man’s killer at large

Almost 10 months since the body of Paeroa businessman Jordan Voudouris was discovered outside his pizza restaurant, police are still appealing for information to help find the killer. Jordan was found dead at the rear of his pizza store and home, Mykonos Pizza and Pasta, on June 18, 2012.

It was later revealed by police he was shot dead just outside the back door of the premises.

Detective Sergeant Dean Anderson of the Matamata Piako CIB says the enquiry team is continuing to work through a large amount of information provided to police since Jordan’s death. People with information are asked to contact Paeroa Police on 07 862 8744.

No plea for careless driving

A group of gang associates allegedly involved in a brawl on 12th Avenue that left one man hospitalised with head injuries have yet to enter a plea on the charges. Eight people appeared in Tauranga Registrar’s Court Thursday, March 28, facing a raft of charges including participating in an organised criminal group and possession of cannabis.

The seven men and one woman were granted interim name suppression and had their case adjourned to allow them to apply for legal aid.

The gang members were arrested after police executed nine search warrants on Tauranga properties Wednesday, March 27. The accused were remanded on bail and will appear in court on April 8.

Agreement was completed in 2006 and developers have, it seems, sole option to repurchase by 2026 so everyone else is shut out. Spending on children’s TV Australia spends more than $40 million a year on children’s programs while NZ only spends $1 million and most of our children’s programs are produced in the USA. What’s so great about the American culture? After all they are only 7th in the world for literacy, 27th in mathematics, 22nd in Science, 49th in life expectancy and 178th in infant mortality and that’s without mentioning violence, corruption and attacking other countries for oil.

American television programs are polluting our society’s values especially with our younger generation. NZ has many talented film production people here in NZ who are struggling to survive. It doesn’t stack up.

New Zealand used to stand up for what was right, we were passionate in protecting our morale standards, and we waged war for poverty reasons not against poor people.

We sacrificed and we cared about our neighbours, we put our money where

our mouths were, we reached for the stars through our no 8 wire philosophy and acted like winners. We aspired to learning and we didn’t belittle it.

We had a great nation and were encouraged and able to do all these things and were led by leaders who cared about the people and those of future generations.

Wake up NZ we are being lead down the drain by a government who doesn’t give a toss of who misses out or gets hurt.

Hear the polar opposite of Gore New Zealand’s legislation at a local, regional and national level is completely undergirded by the assumption that man-made climate change is a real and on-going threat to our society in many ways.

Go to the MfE website and do a search for ‘agenda 21’. You will find that a huge proportion of councils have policies ‘in line with the intentions of UN Agenda21’ already in place, yet the vast majority of New Zealanders have never even heard of it.

Fears of rising sea levels are having huge implications on the planning and consents processes for virtually every council which owns land beside the sea.

Livestock farmers are being branded as ‘polluters’ and pressured from every side because of the perception being broadcast that their animals are contributing in a major way to dangerous global warming.

On an international level, the move towards biofuels has caused huge food shortages due to crops being re-directed into this area. Part of the rationale behind all this is the climate change/ sustainability ethos.

Our school children are being taught politically motivated science which attempts to tell them that carbon is ‘bad’ when in fact it is one of the basic building blocks of life.

Organisations like Greenpeace, 350,org, WWF and so on are playing on peoples’ scientific ignorance to create a huge fear in peoples’ minds, motivating them to get behind a ‘zero carbon’ movement when they have no real idea as to what that even means, or what the implications are.

It’s a long list and I could go on, but I hope you see how important it is for people to be informed about the other side of this issue.

When Al Gore, who is the polar opposite of Lord Monckton, came to NZ for a very brief visit last year, the cheap seats cost about $800, the dear ones $1250.00.

For only $20 Tauranga residents can come and hear a presentation which is based on fact, not fantasy, given by a man who has no vested interests in making money from the climate scare.

Common sense prevails Many of us NZers have been watching the saga on the Marriage definition debate unfold. The majority of us ordinary folk thought common sense will prevail especially from our “protectors of democracy” our MP’s.

It’s become increasingly clear many MP’s have lost their senses. Hence we as the majority can no longer trust our MP’s to do the right thing hence the uprising that’s beginning.

The issue is not about equal rights - the UN charterArticle 16 is clear –that marriage is specifically limited to being between a man and woman. What MP Wall and her cronies, and unbelievably they seem to have sucked in our shining knight Mr John Key, are proposing violates the charter.

How is it possible that such a tiny segment of the population can think they can dictate the terms? How is that we the overwhelmingly heterosexual community are being forced to cheapen our precious religious ceremony?

Yes that’s right it always has been and always will be a “Religious Ceremony”. It has always been that way and if you don’t want the “religious “component you have a “civil ceremony”.

All MP’s need to carefully weigh their decision and how they will vote. Why because the majority of us NZers will never, never, never accept or acknowledge anything, or arrangement other than marriage between a man and woman, and we will retain our right to say so irrespective of the outcome of the bill.

So Parliament you have a dilemma.

‘Big yellow lemons’ costing $6m a year The big yellow “lemons” are set to cost you and I another $6 million this year! I refer to the huge loss making Hopper bus service.

I raise this subject again in response to the media article by Councillor Paula Thompson. She admits the losses but states that the Regional Council is aiming for bus users to pay 35% to 40% of the cost to run the buses by 2018 ! Currently users pay only 23% of the costs.

We all see the empty buses, day after day and wonder if there is any intelligence in our regional councillors.

They have been operating this Empty Bus Service for eleven years now at a combined loss of over $36 million. In 2011 alone it was a $6 million loss.

CBD bus fiasco: violence and disorder

Sea lettuce ruins bike ride My wife and I were appalled the other night to see a huge sea lettuce bloom approx 5m x 3.5m in size floating near the shoreline.

The sea lettuce has been a constant problem here within the Tauranga estuaries and harbour.

On several occasions when I have cycled the full length from Ferguson Park to Waihi Rd via Daisy Hardwick walkway the unbearable stench of hydrogen sulphide and sight of decaying sea lettuce have spoilt my ride along the waterfront. What will

happen to values of the beautiful homes close by? Clearly this problem lies with Tauranga City Council and Regional Council.They are responsible for maintaining parks so why not the waterways? It is an embarrassment to cross the Otumoetai/Chapel St bridge with out of town visitors. Finally I don’t know of any other city with food outlets allowed close to a sewage treament plant.

Where has all the money gone?

TCC has finally decided to change the money hungry TCVL to something new, better and leaner, or have they?

With Director Fees at least doubled and the Mayor said “no staff will lose their jobs …” the signs are ominous for any meaningful change in the future when the wage costs are about 36% of all costs how then can any significant savings in rates be made?

The plan is to “fine tune” user fees revenue by increasing it by 10%, to reduce operating costs (mostly wages) and administration costs by 8% and 10% respectively.

The huge dilemma facing the new Director’s is how to “save $1.8m/pa in

less than three years” … with significant limitations in what is allowed to be done? Perhaps only by demoting middle/upper management to the frontline so reducing the huge administration salaries (e.g. CEO $180,000pa x2) but what Council has ever done that?

The TCC staff review revealed that the manager/staff ratio is 1:4, other Councils are 1:10 so it is obvious where the real savings can be made. But sadly only front line staff have been affected, the staff review is a feeble attempt at a staff audit that failed.

Currently about 15% of every ones annual rates goes in and it is not coming back out ever! I Stevenson, Tauranga.

There was no need for TCC to have ever courted this violence and public disorder issue.

A majority of the usual council suspects voted for this Bus Centre nonsense. It’s cost TCC ratepayers plenty, after being repeatedly told it was the wrong place for it.

Now we have the usual knee-jerking and handwringing to employ security in plain daylight to keep order on the CBD streets, right outside council chambers front door, costing $50,000 p.a.(minimum) TCC ratepayers yet again “told to pay” is completely unacceptable.

The council staff infighting resulting in redundancy and grievance payments totalling $1.3 million since 2007, Mayor Crosby has barged into the fray like a bull in a china shop.

We have Mayor Crosby finally admitting the council’s wage cost is $37m/pa, that’s 40% of all rates intake.

The last audited annual accounts say $39.4m, also conceding staff numbers are about 500 – in fact it’s closer to 550+200 CCO’s staff with an additional wage bill of $7m/pa and observers don’t need to wonder why there’s financial misery going down at TCC. This council outfit is in financial and administrative turmoil, call in the regulators! It is councillors that need a security blanket thrown over them to protect the public from their decisions and excesses…

RR’s recently put the total TCC debt at 30-June2012 at $391m (TCC spin-doctors), while critics put it at $460m (according to Audit NZ) but currently it has gone over $500m by all accounts.

Electromagnetic: What of it?

In answer to Mary Brooks: Well, $30m is just a pittance!

However you are quite right in the fact that the ‘electromagnetic spectrum’ was dreamt up long before the Treaty of Waitangi - and also that the then Maori people were not literate.

Jazz Festival returns: almost everything right A lot of people, myself included, had their eye on the jazz festival this year; I thought the event got pretty much everything right.

It was widely touted as a smaller festival this time out, which indeed it was in some aspects, but describing it that way does rather a disservice to what a huge event it actually was. Five days of music, participants from the age of eight to the age of eighty, sell-out concerts, and huge crowds downtown and at the Historic Village. Not a lot to complain about there.

This was obviously something of a make-or-break year for the festival, though it seemed to go so smoothly that in the end it seemed more like a mild

transition – all the upheavals behind the scenes of the Jazz Society were largely forgotten in the goodwill that such a friendly and open event inspires.

But the subtle differences were noticeable and, I think, well appreciated by many who have watched the festival’s evolution over the years.

A Kiwi approach

One obvious change was that the concert series at Baycourt featured New Zealand artists. This was a small but significant return to the National Jazz Festival showcasing homegrown performers, something that was slowly being lost in the past few years’ move towards a more “international” festival.

that the audiences agree.

Ironically, the concert I thought would be the most popular, New Zealand’s biggest worldwide jazz star Nathan Haines, proved to be an underachiever in terms of tickets sales.

So what do I know? But almost all the other Baycourt shows had the majority of seats taken, with three of them completely selling out. This demonstrates a couple of things: firstly, Kiwi audiences will happily watch Kiwi musicians; secondly the programmers – thank you Becks Chambers and Liam Ryan – have a good grasp on what local audiences like, be it the songs of Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald or a One of the many spectacular bands performing at the Tauranga Jazz big band night.

Yet still there were those who complained. THE ANGELS SHARE Starring: Paul Brannigan, William Ruane, John Henshaw, - Dir: Ken Loach I’ve long been a fan of left-wing political English director Ken Loach, whose work ranges from astute portraits of working class lives (Ladybird Ladybird, Raining Stones) to examinations of historical struggle (The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Land and Freedom) and, more recently, a brand of bitter sweet comedy that roots its humour in sharply-drawn characters (Searching For Eric).

His latest is in the latter vein and is a real treat.

Our hero is Robbie, a young Scot with a newborn baby who vows to give his son a better life than he has had. Which is not an easy ask since Robbie has just escaped a prison sentence

The original movie holds a place in many a warped psyche as one of the most preposterously bad films ever made. So, naturally, we now have a remake of Red Dawn . General absurdity is still present in abundance as a group of college kids (and Chris Hemsworth’s off-duty marine) wake to find their home of Spokane – and the rest of the US - has been invaded by North Korea. With the American military apparently caught on the hop at the sudden arrival of nasty commie paratroopers and any dissenters herded into makeshift prisons, it’s up to our brave teens to gather weapons and fight back. “North Korea? That doesn’t make any sense.” says one character early on. Astonishingly, the premise only begins to plumb the depths of stupidity that follow.

and is serving a community service order. He meets Rhino, Albert and Mo who, like him, find getting work difficult because of criminal records. Then the four discover high-end whisky and come up with an unlikely plan to solve their problems, leading to an ingenious highland heist.

It’s a wonderful, life-affirming film, very funny yet at the same time never glossing over the bleak situation the characters emerge from and the moral complexities of the justice system. And the cast are uniformly great.

You’ll finish this film with a smile on your face – don’t miss it.

Dexter Fletcher – probably still best known as an actor from Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (though he has 85 screen credits) makes his debut as director with the very impressive Wild Bill . Charlie Creed-Miles plays the titular parolee, out after eight years and surprised to find his 11 and 15 year old sons abandoned by their mother and fending for themselves. What follows is a tough but very human exploration of a damaged man rediscovering family while coping with the many hangovers from his old life, as younger son, Jimmy, gets involved with Bill’s old mates from his drug dealing days.

Really good in just about every way. is a gritty trawl through Miss Bala corruption and everyday crime in the Mexican border town Baja. It follows the experiences of Laura, a young country girl who enters a beauty contest but, before she can even get properly registered, witnesses a nightclub murder by a drug gang who subsequently kidnap and force her to help them. Keeping the tone largely naturalistic and the focus on Laura’s ordeal makes the viewer a behind-the-scenes witness to Mexico’s drug wars and it’s a tense and unsettling experience, thought the finale is possibly a step too far.

I have never played the “groundbreaking video franchise” and found the first film equal parts unmemorable and unintelligible, so I’m probably not the target market for Silent Hill: Revelation . Central to the story are Heather (Adelaide Clemens) and her father (an oddly Americanaccented Sean Bean). They’re on the run; she has nightmares suggesting she has read too much Clive Barker. Seems the evil forces that stole away mummy in part one are now after Heather. When hallucinogenic weirdness increases and dad disappears it’s off to the titular ghost town to confront an imaginatively-designed coterie of demonic nasties. Pros?

Inventive visuals and cool cameos (Martin Donovan, Malcolm McDowell, Carrie-Anne Moss, Deborah Kara Unger). Cons? It’s basically rubbish.

Exhibition brings understanding and awareness Intellectually disabled adults are getting the opportunity to celebrate and share their unique works of art with the Tauranga community this month.

Avalon (BOP) Incorporated is holding an exhibition called ‘Kit and Caboodle’ from April 4-23 at Creative Tauranga.

Avalon service coordinator Amanda Devereux says the exhibition, consisting of 50 pieces including a range of art, paintings, mixed media, sculpture and photography, exposes the community to the voices and innovation of the artists.

“It is engaging members of the public in a way that will challenge their beliefs and assumptions associated with disability and art.

“I believe that this exhibition has the

potential to be transformational for both the artists and the community through exposure, interpretation and awareness.”

Amanda says the artists are “very excited” about the exhibition.

“There has been a high level of ‘hype’ in the art room while preparing for the event during the past two months. We have spent time visiting other exhibitions so it is a great feeling for the

City Early Start members are a vibrant, enthusiastic support group who meet every Wednesday from 7-8.15am at Classic Flyers cafe to learn soft skills such as interpersonal communication, organisation, team management and leadership.

The club has a diverse and fun group of members in management, administration, professional and business-orientated roles as well as students – but anyone is welcome to join.

Member Mike, who has been attending for six months, says he didn’t realise Toastmasters teaches so much more than just how to talk in public.

“It also has programmes which develop listening skills and leadership skills, that are so important for communication in business and walks of life.”

Musical movement Honouring their father with a jazz band tribute was how Robyn Curd and Glenda Moore chose to celebrate their family business’ relocation this week.

On Tuesday Bay Dixie Band, friends of the late Ken Hayman, a founder of the National Jazz Festival, paraded with Ken’s family from the Bernina Sewing Centre’s old location to the new premises at 387 Cameron Rd. Co-owner Robyn says the tribute to Ken was a fitting way to move the family business, started by Ken and wife Bev 43 years ago. “Dad passed away 15 years ago, so we thought it would be a nice touch to get some of his jazz mates, and follow them on a bit of a pilgrimage to our new shop.

“Mum’s still here to share it all and it’s timely with the Jazz Festival at the weekend. It’s like taking dad from the old shop to the new shop – our way of giving back.”

The sisters purchased the business from their parents nine years ago and say the industry is going strong.

“A lot of people think sewing has become something of the past – but that’s not true.

The Bernina Sewing Centre is the biggest Bernina dealership in New Zealand, stocking machines, quilting, patchwork, and all sewing, embroidery and quilting supplies.

“We run a lot of sewing classes and have the biggest Bernina club in New Zealand.”

Robyn and Glenda wish to inform their customers of the move, and thank them for their loyal support. “Our customers are part of our family as well.”

He was a Sir Edmund Hillary Scholar at the university, winning several awards including the Blues Awards for Excellence in Creative and Performing Arts (2009-2012), Pou Ahurea Award for Maori Person of the Year (2011), and the Kerby Bursary Award for Graduate Excellence in Music and Contribution to the University (2012).

In 2012, Chase was awarded an AMP National Scholarship for Excellence in Performing Arts/Music. More than 2000 applicants from across New Zealand applied and 10 finalists were chosen for this prestigious award ceremony.

Bake sale raising funds Every year Tauranga City Elim sends a missions team to Lautoka Fiji.

The team spends time doing practical projects such as painting and renovations and also house-to-house visits – encouraging people, giving out reading glasses and praying for the sick.

This is always a highlight of the church year as team members come back sharing stories of the impact they have made and the lives that have been changed.

The exposure to poverty and seeing God move in another nation is often a defining moment in a team member’s life.

We are sending a team again in the April school holidays and have five teenagers attending. To help raise funds for this we are holding a bake

sale and carwash at Tauranga City Elim Church on Saturday, April 6 from 9am. You will find us behind McDonalds on 11th Avenue. We would love you to come along and be a part of this day and contribute to a worthy cause.

In the Book of Life?

The Bible teaches a day is coming, when a holy and righteous God will judge the world and all in it. We read in Revelation 20:11-15: “Then I saw a great white throne and Him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the Book of Life... and if anyone’s name was not found written in the Book of Life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” The basis for our names being in the Book

of Life is not our good works or our attempts to live good lives, because our righteousness is like “filthy rags” before a Holy God. Romans 3:10 tells us “None is righteous, no, not one”.

Our best efforts to live righteously fall short of God’s righteous standards because everyone, except Jesus, born after the fall, was born with an inherent sin nature. The only way for our names to be written in the Book of Life and the only way to escape the just judgment to come is through salvation in Christ.

Resolute by Bay Bible – Part 3 of 3 In this final rendition of a three-part series considering being “resolute” for Jesus Christ, we consider that some other synonyms for the word ‘resolute’ are: firm, definite, determined, and unwavering.

All these synonyms could bring to mind the picture of a lighthouse being firm and unwavering against the lashing waves that crash against it in the midst of a raging storm. Kite flight spectacle soars in sky

Mungo and Emily make the cut Two Tauranga students will represent the Bay of Plenty in Youth Parliament this year.

A flash of colour decorated the sky for the New Zealand Kite Association’s Easter Kite Fly last weekend.

Tauranga Boys’ College student Mungo Mason will represent Tauranga MP Simon Bridges and Emily McCarthy will represent Bay of Plenty MP Tony Ryall.

Mungo and Emily are two of 121 Youth MPs nationwide to visit Parliament on July 16-17 to learn about government decision-making and share the views of New Zealand’s youth with the country’s politicians.

As Youth MPs, they’ll debate legislation, sit on select committees and ask questions to cabinet ministers.

Simon says Mungo’s application showed a real grasp of New Zealand culture and politics.

“He is the sort of leader Kiwis like - humble, hardworking and enthusiastic.”

Tony says Emily was interviewed alongside her old sister Loren. She won due to “her passion and enthusiasm for this experience”.

Mungo and Emily hold their roles, actively engaging with communities to gain ideas and concerns of local youth, from May 1 to December 31.
