Natural historians When Queenie and Hazel Symes were born in Inglewood prior to the Great War, few would have picked they’d see the 21st Century. Yet next week Hazel, of Tauranga, will celebrate her 103rd birthday. The sisters are the eldest of eight children in a family who have lived to a late age. Next weekend they return to Te Kauwhata, where they grew up, for a family reunion. Read Hazel and Queenie’s tips on defying age on page 6. Sister’s Queenie Alexander, 104, and Hazel Bryce, 102, have both lived about double the typical life expectancy from when they were born. Photo by Tracy Hardy.
