Indoor climbing may not reach the same heights in coverage as rugby does, but the skills required for this sport are arguably more intense. The growing competitive sport is currently in the middle of the NZ National Cup, with eight teams from around the country fighting to reach the top of both the wall and the points table. Round three of the national series is being held at Mount Maunganui with defending champion team Rockhouse from the Mount battling to hold their title on June 11 and 12. See story page 11.

Capitalising on the retirement boom Being an age friendly city is about improving traffic lights, public toilets and other urban amenities and infrastructure so that older people can enjoy easy access.

Carole Gordon, coordinator of the 11 agencies that lobbied the Tauranga City Council into adopting the World Health Organisation’s Age Friendly City programme, says its main affect is to improve urban environments in a way that will pay.

Cities that have followed the age friendly path overseas have

reaped significant economic benefits, says Carole.

Carole says the baby boomers will be healthier, better educated and have more spending power than any other generation reaching 65 in New Zealand’s history, “It’s how you adapt all sorts of services and how you plan the city so that it keeps them engaged in life and keeps them well.

“The great majority are well educated, take pride in their well being and want to have an active life, so that’s really the lead edge of where Tauranga can have leadership.

We’re being fleeced, like Shrek The week kicked off in fine style, with the brilliant Baypark Drive-In Movie experience.

The RR team loaded up the truck with grandchildren and headed off for a cool evening of family bonding with “ET”.

Poor old ET is still locked in the nineties time warp back on earth.

It was a bit of a shock to consider that if the movie had been made now, the famous catchline “ET phone home” would more likely be “ET text home…or at least update your Facebook status.”

It was great to see so many families at the Drive-In for some relaxed social time. There was a real sense of community. All credit to the organisers for a wonderful event.

Fine Wether report

The passing of Shrek the sheep this week was notable, if for nothing else, the outpouring of sick jokes. Here at RR headquarters we find it distasteful that people are making fun over the demise of a national icon.

My wife started it; by declaring that Shrek was a Fine Wether. (We should have forecast that one.)

Then some wag chimed in with the question: “Would it be in bad taste to take mint sauce to Shrek’s cremation?”

Well at least the sheep won’t have to endure a Celebrity Roast. That would be shear poor taste.

TV dredged up an old clip (haha) of Helen Clark declaring that Shrek was “good company”.

Doesn’t say much for husband Peter’s ratings as a buddy, does it?

I can see how Shrek would have suited Helen as a model companion. He was the epitomy of a

good citizen. If only the rest of NZ had followed like sheep, Helen could have continued fleecing the rest of the sheeple, too.

Speaking of sick animals Scam of the Year Award goes to The Boxing Beneficiary.

Sonny Bill Williams managed to swallow any pride he may have had, to jump in the boxing ring with Alipate Liava, the dumpy benefit scammer from Tonga.

He’s a “Sickness Beneficiary” by profession, after finding gospel singing didn’t pay as well. So he’s developed tennis elbow, which apparently, stops you from singing gospel for a living, but allows you to train and fight for a boxing match against an All Black.

Now this is disturbing on a number of levels.

Why do we allow foreigners into the country to become bludgers on our health system?

Exactly how sick do you need to be to get a sickness benefit? Too sick to work, too sick to sing, but

not too sick to be able to train and fight in a boxing match?

And then there’s SBW’s pride.

What sort of fighter goes into a ring against a failed gospel-singing sickness beneficiary with tennis elbow? If SBW had competed with one hand tied behind his back, it might have been a fairer match. This bout made a mockery of the so-called sport, of our welfare system and the inept management of our country’s tax resources.

I had tennis elbow for eight months last year, but I didn’t get any handouts from the taxpayer for my disability. Nor was I able to continue with sport – let alone jump into a boxing ring with an All Black.

Oh no, like the rest of the suckers, I kept working and paying tax to support the likes of these bludgers.

This episode has marked a low point, not only from a sporting perspective, but pretty well sums up the absurd everyday waste of taxpayer resources in this country. No wonder the workers have a heavy burden when there are those happily and openly scamming the system.

About time the government took the gloves off and knocked the daylights out of the shameless queues of ripoffs.

Just like Shrek, the wool has been over our eyes for too long now.

Bay fatal crash rate hits 30 year low

The annual road death toll for the Bay of Plenty is at its lowest level for almost 30 years.

With only three weeks to go until the end of the police financial year on June 30, the region’s road death toll stands at 35, well below the police target of 45.

Bay of Plenty road policing manager Acting Inspector Stu Nightingale says this is the first time since 1983 the region’s road toll has been below 45.

“There was a time when Bay of Plenty featured high in fatal

motor vehicle crashes, but in the last year we have seen significant reductions in motor vehicle crashes.

“With the new police year approaching we need to continually look at opportunities to drive down motor vehicle crashes even further.”

In 1983, the region’s road toll was 48, peaking at 97 in 1987, before tracking down in recent years.

The number of crashes involving alcohol is also decreasing.

In the year ending April 2011, alcohol was a factor in two crashes, compared to 13 during the same period the previous year.

fatality the chances of it being a recidivist is at least 50 per cent and in the last year alcohol has not featured as much.”

Bay of Plenty police believe a range of factors have contributed to the drop in road fatalities.

This includes improved car safety, advances in emergency medical care, speed reduction, more police on the roads and a change in driver behaviour.

“We will reach a plateau where it will be significantly harder to make further gains because people will still continue to drive when fatigued, they will still be impatient so there will be a lot of driver behaviour that is difficult to enforce.”

Regular donors are life savers It took roughly 3.5 litres of blood to save Senior Sergeant Deirdre Lack after her horrific head-on car accident in December last year.

The police officer suffered a total of 15 breaks in her body; including three to the femur, three to the ankle, right forearm, two to the bicep, three breaks to her pelvis, as well as fractures in her ribs and fingers.

She required six units of red blood cells and six units of plasma. The red cells are used to replace blood loss, plasma is a volume expander (liquid component of blood) used to replace volume.

“Because I had breaks in the big bones, I lost a lot of blood – so needed to recover that blood back to help with the recovery and it helps oxygenise your body,” says Deirdre.

On World Blood Donor Day this Tuesday, June 14, Deirdre can count herself as one of the 42,000 New Zealanders whose lives are saved by blood donors every year.

Tauranga donor recruiter Jodie Felton says the Tauranga region needs to collect approximately 200 donations every week to help these lives. Currently, the region has about 5900 blood donors.

“We have to make sure the donations are there to meet the potential need and because blood only lasts 35 days, we need donors to contribute throughout the year to keep up a continuous supply.”

– ‘Blood Donors Save the Day’ – is aimed at encouraging people to follow the lead of regular donors by ‘saving a day’ to donate blood in the year ahead.

Jodie says these donors are every day heroes and “like the emergency services that attended Deirdre’s crash; these eve-

ryday heroes had a significant impact on saving her life”.

Reduced daylight a warning A marine rescue search on the weekend is an example that boaties need to factor in the reduced daylight hours when going out in winter.

The Coastguard and police were called when it was getting dark by a concerned mother, after her two sons went fishing on Monday and were two hours late returning.

The boys were found almost immediately, near the railway bridge. They were late returning to the pick-up spot near the end of Matapihi Road and had been unable to drag the 12ft dinghy and outboard across the sand at low tide.

They didn’t want to leave the boat and the 11-year-old didn’t want to remain alone while his 18-year-old brother set off to locate their ride. They had lifejackets, but no lights or communications.

“She did the right thing by informing us when she did,” says Constable Steve Campbell.

missing party is well overdue – particularly with water issues; time is of the essence and can mean the difference between life and death. “In this case she did the right thing by phoning us early.”

When going out, boaties need to have all the safety equipment in the boat; life jackets, flares and oars, depending on the size of the boat, says Steve.

He recommends a VHF radio, at least a hand held, even for open boats.

“People think because they are in sight of a cell phone tower they will get coverage, but that’s not the case. There’s a minimum distance that the reception will carry. VHF is the way to go.”

There is a basic marine radio course people can do through the coastguard says Steve. It’s an evening class that takes two to three hours.

“The other thing would be for people to sit the day skipper’s licence with the Coastguard.

Musicians from secondary schools across the Bay of Plenty are performing for a place at the upcoming New Zealand Chamber Music Contest.

Bay of Plenty regional competition organiser Lynne Sperring says the event will draw 30 groups from 10 schools, including five Tauranga schools.

Lynne says it gives students a chance to perform to a wider audience than usual.

“We are expecting a range of standard, from those who have not been learning for too long, to those who are working at a very advanced level,” she says.

She says all performances were videoed for judges

to select the top teams for the national competition in July.

“The national competition is always dominated by the major centres, but everyone always gives it their best shot and has fun along the way.”

Otumoetai College will be among local schools taking part. The college has 21 students performing, comprising two percussion groups, a string group, a flute trio and a clarinet quartet.

College teacher Leigh Johnston said the groups had been practising since the start of the year and “rehearsals had stepped up” in the past month as the competition approached.

Anyone interested can attend the contest at Bethlehem College Performing Arts Centre (sessions at 10.30am or 2pm).

It looks like the council rate revenue requirement to run your city at the level of service set out in the annual plan will be around an 11 per cent increase.

With an allowance for inflation and new ratepayers who have come on stream during the year, this will amount to an eight per cent or nine per cent increase for most. The rate requirement is around $99 million of an expected expenditure of around $156 million. The balance of $57 million comes from user fees and development contributions. Total debt is expected to be around $391 million or 247 per cent of debt/revenue ratio limit of 250 per cent set by credit rating agency Standard and Poors. If that is exceeded then our credit rating could drop and interest rates on future loans, including those that are maturing, will attract an increased interest rate. That’s an interesting concept isn’t it? As debt increases then you increase the interest rate making it an even bigger risk until eventually it becomes impossible to repay the debt. Witness the financial debacles surrounding third world debt where this happens and the debt gets written off. Can’t see that happening here though. I would rate Tauranga as AAA credit risk, notwithstanding the highly complex world of credit rating. As I’ve noted before, getting the $58 million debt of Route K off council’s books would provide the financial relief we need – provided future councils don’t borrow more for nice-to-haves as has contributed to the present situation.

Behind the scenes negotiations continue as

a priority. A number of scenarios are being explored, but due to the fact that Route K does actually exist, your council does not come from a negotiating position of strength.

In fact, it’s more like a vulnerable relative holding out for a favour.

Christchurch earthquake repairs are soaking up future financial resources, and government borrowing around $300 million a week to keep NZ afloat financially, are some of the extra factors being introduced. But there is hope, albeit laced with compromise. We remain confident of a Route K debt solution in the next 12 months, but maybe not one that will make everyone happy.

Budgeting for leaks

Council has left $250,000 in the budget for leaky homes. We are waiting for the final details of the government’s package designed to take legal fees out of the equation. I have been informed from a legal source that out of a leaky home action of $220,000, $80,000 can go in legal fees.

There are some bottom feeders out there feasting on this disaster and some protract the issues to generate more legal fees. It is worthy that if these costs can be eliminated then the victims will be better off. But it is also to be considered that if there is no legal input then some could jump on the bandwagon at government and ratepayer expense.

It’s hugely complex and as with everything in dealing with central government the devil will be in the detail. And usually in these situations local government is the fall guy and can come off second best.

The present proposal is for central government to pay 25 per cent, local government 25 per cent and the homeowner 50 per cent of proven negligence damage in a leaky home. Where some victims will get their 50 per cent is not explained and nor is the matter of GST and income tax that central government stands to gain from this misery.

It’s almost in the same league as the critics of the legal expenses issue. And of course participation is voluntary. In some cases homeowners might be better off staying with the existing legal process. And seeing it was central government which changed the

tried and true rules in the first place, there is a case for a significant increase in their contribution, but don’t hold your breath. In the final analysis it’s you and me who will pay anyway – through rates and taxes.

Then there was a further proposal to waive building inspection fees for repairing leaky homes. Again this is a potential Pandora’s Box of tricks. As Mayor Stuart Crosby said, this leaky homes disaster is a real hearts and minds issue – you take from someone to give to someone else. ‘The Robin Hood Syndrome’ is how I see it, except there is no discretion with rates that ensures that you only take from the rich.

And who is ‘rich’ anyway?

Passing the buck

Rick Curach did his trick of smoke and mirror financing by moving that the chief executive (CEO) be set a savings target of $3 million. This motion was made despite Rick being privy to all expenditure proposed and voting and agreeing with most of it.

It is in fact not the CEO’s role to set expenditure levels, nor levels of service or the annual plan budget, that’s the sole domain of elected members. The proposed resolution had just been tabled when new CEO Ken Paterson walked into the chamber on a brief familiarisation visit.

(Ken starts on July 11). The new CEO kept his composure and listened to the debate intently. No doubt more than a little relieved the resolution was soundly kicked to touch, with only Rick and Catherine Stewart voting for it.

Meeting the cost

There is little call for reductions in levels of service again this year. In fact, there are many requests for improved services. So that’s another reason how rates get to how they are.

The voluntary rates account languishes – almost forgotten – as a memorial to the ‘wants, needs and deserves’ brigade’s demands that we all pay for nice-to-haves.

From memory it has around $4000 total in it. From a personal point of view I’m not happy with this financial result. But in view of the circumstances and how they were arrived at, there are no options. Wishing and hoping doesn’t work.

A relevant mindbender this week: “There are only two zones in politics: the high ground of leadership and the low ground of pandering to popular reaction.” From that sage of time – anonymous.

Preparations for the 16th annual Te Puke Book Fair are well-under way with hundreds of books, magazines and comics filling the hall.

The three day fair opens at the Te Puke Memorial Hall doors from June 23 to June 25, starting at 8am on Thursday and Friday and from 9am on Saturday.

As well as books, Te Puke Kiwicoats Lions who are organising the fair are also looking for games, DVDS, music and records.

Bethlehem book of history Amateur historian Sheryl Farrow has just finished the project of her life – a history book on Bethlehem.

The ‘almost Bethlehem’ local – who lives just over the Wairoa river boundary – began researching the area three years ago in the preparation for Bethlehem Primary School’s 125th anniversary.

“When I was researching that (the school), I started looking into the general history of Bethlehem and found there was basically

More businesses enter liquidation The number of Tauranga companies going into liquidation is on the rise, with one insolvency expert saying “no sector is immune”.

According to figures supplied by the Ministry of Economic Development, there were 187 businesses liquidated between June 1, 2010 and May 31, 2011, compared to 135 in the previous year.

Business liquidation specialist, Kenneth Brown, who is managing director of RHB Chartered Accountants, says a variety of Tauranga businesses are struggling.

“Over the last year or two it’s been across the board, whereas in past years it has been in one sector – no business sector is immune,” says Kenneth.

“You can’t say it’s just the builders and developers. They have certainly been hit, but so have other entities as well.”

Figures from the two year comparison show the number of businesses going into receivership is up from 34 to 45, and companies put into voluntary administration up from zero to two.

Kenneth says most of the businesses his firm dealt with in the last year involved losses of between $300,000 and $500,000, but some have been upward of $3 million.

Businesses going into liquidation include a number of retail and manufacturing companies, but have also included farms, a hotel, finance companies and a car wrecker.

Asset sales involved in liquidation are also getting harder because

items are flooding onto the market.

“There’s a lot of gear on the market so you are not getting as much for the assets as you would have got two or three years ago because there’s a lot of it out there.”

Kenneth believes the companies going into liquidation are all facing the same problem – a lack of cash flow.

“People are struggling because they are not getting paid themselves.

“They do not have the forward orders, particularly in manufacturing. People are slow in paying.”

Once a company is liquidated, the money is prioritised to go to securities first, such as banks, then to cover liquidation costs, and outstanding payroll payments, with the owners of the company rarely receiving anything. By Lyle McMahon

It has been a labour of love, with Sheryl putting in about 20 hours a week for most of the last three years.

She concluded the project last week and donated a copy of her 260-page book, ‘Bethlehem – Tauranga’s Little Star’, to Tauranga City Library.

“It was amazing where the infor-

mation came from, it just grew like topsy. You would be talking to one person and they would say ‘have you talked to so and so’.”

The book spans the area’s history, starting with sections on the iwi history and the early survey and settlement, then follows the area’s development through to today. Naturists not to blame for nakedness

Nude behaviour on Papamoa beaches is being called unacceptable by members of the public, but Bay of Plenty naturists want people to understand they are not to blame.

Bay of Plenty Naturist organiser Glenne Findon says people performing lewd acts at Papamoa beach are not naturists and these people are a nuisance to them as everyone else.

“If we go to Papamoa, we sit on the beach. We are not hiding away in the dunes and we don’t exhibit lewd behaviour. Because they are naked, everybody thinks they must be naturists and that is where the confusion is. We get tarred with the same brush.”

The response comes after a Papa-

moa jogger complained to police of two men engaged in inappropriate behaviour in the sand dunes at Papamoa beach.

Glenne says she doesn’t want to aggravate the situation and the Bay of Plenty Naturists want to work with the police to catch these people who are disturbing the peace.

Senior Sergeant Mark Pakes, who is no longer a police officer at Papamoa, but has been in contact with the naturists, says he agrees the naturists are not the problem.

He says Papamoa though is no longer a “quiet, sleepy suburbia”.

“The problem for the public is they can’t differentiate naturists from people who are just naked.

The problem now is it is no longer suitable with the beach situated in the middle of suburbia. It would be up to the community and the council to decide if the beach was

to ban nudity.”

Papamoa police Acting Sergeant Dean Wooller says the complaint was an isolated incident and the Papamoa police won’t be taking any action in regards to shutting down the beach as a naturists spot.

Communications advisor for Tauranga City Council Alison Clifford says the unofficial naturist beach in Papamoa is on private Maori land, which goes right down to the high tide mark and is not an area the council has any jurisdiction over.

“When the Beaches Bylaw was consulted on in 2007, a submitter questioned if council could prohibit nude bathers on beaches. The response was that council would only prohibit bathing on beaches if there were issues with public health and safety and that nude sunbathers were not considered a threat to

Lessons of political art Tauranga MP Simon Bridges says he has made a painting that will look great on someone’s toilet wall.

He is talking about his painting which is being auctioned at the upcoming “Treasured Art” charity art sale.

Money from the Tauranga Sunrise Rotary Club fundraiser will go to youth development programme Kiwi Can. Paintings from Simon and Prime Minister John Key are among 15 auction items to be unveiled on the night.

Last year, Simon’s painting sold for about $200 and he hopes at least as much will go to Kiwi Can this year.

In an effort to raise the bar, he has had some painting tips from internationally recognised Tauranga artist Hayley Brown.

Reaching daring highs and clinging on for dear life is how Mount Maunganui Climbing Club Team Rockhouse hopes to defend their National climbing title.

Team Rockhouse are taking on teams from around the country in the third series of the 2011 Climbing NZ National Cup this weekend on June 11 and 12 at The Rock House in Triton Avenue.

As it is a home ‘game’ for last year’s defending champions, Mount Maunganui coach Ken MacPherson says the home advantage will put the climbers in good stead for the series.

The Mount Maunganui climbing wall boasts an impressing 10m high climb, with horizontal climbs across the roof.

Ken says climbing is a growing sport around the country and is slowly becoming more widely recognised as a competition sport.

“There is a real technique to it. In terms of training, climbers under 12 years old work on their techniques once a week, but under 16 and under 18 year olds can be doing it up to four days a week with outdoor climbs as well.”

The Mount team boasts two players who have been selected for the Worlds Junior Youth Team – Adam Steens and Irmark Thompson.

Assisting judge for the competition and parent of a Team Rockhouse climber Chuck Wingfield says the competition works on a points system, based on different climbs for different ages.

The older climbers have more technical climbs than the eight or nine year olds.”

With climbers on “fingernails and toes” for the majority of their climb, Chuck says this is a skilful sport which demands a high level of fitness and agility.

The competition qualifiers are on Saturday, June 11 with eight climbers from each age group going through to compete in the finals on Sunday, June 12.

An invitation-only gala opening and auction takes place on Thursday, June 23. The exhibition at Ingham Sears Mercedes Benz in Mount Maunganui is open to the public for the two days following the auction, on Friday and Saturday from 10am-3pm.

Cultural diversity overcome in Tauranga’s world

A recent New Zealand film release questions the prejudice of inter-racial marriages, but a Tauranga couple say starting their family has been a “liberating experience”.

‘Desert’ focuses on a young Asian woman who falls pregnant to a Kiwi man and is shunned by her family and the Asian community for falling pregnant to a Westerner out of wed-lock.

A far cry from the situation of the film, but Papamoa couple Steve and Ancy Morris agree they encountered initial resistance from Ancy’s parents.

“I met her after just six months of being in Dubai and I asked her to marry me. Her parents were dead against it. My mum, dad and

brother flew over from Tauranga to convince them and ask her parents’ permission,” says Steve.

“There was obviously this initial resistance, who is this man from another country wanting to marry our daughter from a different culture.”

Ancy’s parents have now completed a full 180 degree turn and Steve says her father “just loves me”.

Steve and Ancy were married in 2003 and have lived in Papamoa since 2004.

Ancy was living as an Indian in Dubai and Steve says leaving her country to come to Tauranga was a liberating experience. The pair has never experienced any prejudice in New Zealand as an inter-racial couple.

“She found it quite liberating, moving from a system of prejudice to a system where

she could walk into a job and had the right to vote. As an Indian living in Dubai, she would not expect to get paid the same as an Arab or a European worker,” says Steve.

Vice president of the Tauranga Regional Ethnic Council Ramesh Sherma says Tauranga has become a ‘mini-world’ and recommends new immigrants explore different cultures and ways of life – including inter-racial marriage.

“My advice is if they reside in their own sphere and are not going to mix with local people – they are not going to be happy and make good friendships.”

Ramesh says many of his friends are examples of inter-racial couples working successfully without prejudice and says the matter is not to do with race, but “when there are narrow minded families involved”.

Investing in infrastructure One of this government’s key planks for economic growth is investment in infrastructure.

In addition to significant increases in public asset spending since National has been in office, in the next four years we will undertake a $34 billion investment programme to ensure New Zealanders have the roads, public transport networks, schools, hospitals, broadband and other infrastructure we need for our future.

In the last fortnight, it has been a pleasure to be involved in the opening of two significant public assets in Tauranga that will be of substantial benefit to our city and the wider region for many years to come.

Tauranga’s Building 50

In May, Health Minister and Bay of Plenty MP Hon Tony Ryall opened Tauranga Hospital’s Building 50, formerly known as the East Wing. It is the final stage in the Bay of Plenty District Health Board’s $157 million building and refurbishment project in Tauranga.

The building itself cost about $25 million and now houses an extended and upgraded Medical Day Stay Ward and an Endoscopy Unit as well as ICU and Coronary Units.

Many of you will know this building as the

Pyes Pa Bypass

Last Saturday Transport Minister Hon Steven Joyce came to Tauranga and officially opened the $55 million Pyes Pa Bypass Road. This 4.5km road links SH36 with Route K to help bring the cities of Rotorua and Tauranga closer together and

ensure quicker, more efficient trips for exporters to the Port. In addition, the new route will clear a lot of unwanted traffic from increasingly urbanised sections of Pyes Pa and The Lakes. This will allow families to enjoy being families while business gets on with business.

Personally, I am very excited about the future for people in the suburbs of Pyes Pa and The Lakes. In years to come, I believe these will be some of the most dynamic parts of the Western Bay of Plenty. For this reason, active investigation is also going into the $50 million Tauriko Bypass.

Jumping the ditch

Just a very short hop “across the ditch” on a direct non-stop four hour flight can land you firmly into the ‘spirit of South Australia – Adelaide’.

What was I doing here in the middle of May? Well, mum had always raised the topic of travelling to Adelaide…a wish on her bucket list. I decided the time was nigh, so off we went, just Mum and me. We decided May was a good time to visit, being a moderate temperature, and we were right. The weather was dry with moderate sunny

days, but you needed a jacket in the evenings.

We stayed in the North Adelaide area, one block back from Melbourne Street, which housed lots of cafes, bars and restaurants. It was also on the free connector bus into the city, which meant access back and forth was very easy. North Adelaide is a stroll from the Adelaide Oval if you wanted to stay close to the venue for any sporting events. The Zoo, Botanic Gardens and the casino all are within walking distance. North Adelaide is a very old, mostly restored, historic area. We opted for a lovely Historic 1880’s cottage with full kitchen facilities, two bedrooms and a lovely outdoor private courtyard area. North Adelaide is full of beautiful cottages

and buildings, big trees and cobblestone streets. It is quieter than the city and you can feel part of the community for a short time.

We tried to pack in as much sightseeing as we could in our short visit as there is so much to see and do. The first trip out of town had to be a full day Murray River cruise – the anticipation of seeing those rusty red-brown cliffs dipping straight into the muddy brown Murray River didn’t disappoint.

It is almost ‘hypnotic’ to simply glide down the river and see the world go by.

Mesmerising, captivating and a perfect photo shot on every bend. A lovely buffet lunch is part of the full day tour, accompanied by a lovely glass of South Australian white means for a placid and relaxing afternoon on an early evening return back into the city.

Kangaroo Island is another big day and starts with a gentle climb out of the city in panoramic windowed coaches through the Adelaide Hills, then transferring aboard the ferry at Cape Jervis for the 40 minute ferry ride to the island. Seal Bay, the Remarkable Rocks and the Admirals Arch are well worth the stop. Well constructed timber walkways over the typically Australian flora and foliage make easy walking and you can soak up the coastal ruggedness of this unique area. One of mum’s highlights on this trip was the Birds of Prey show – where falcons, hawks and owls are brought into close proximity, enabling a really good look at these wonderful wild creatures. They are often

bought into the sanctuary if they have been hurt or damaged in any way before being released back into their natural habitat. There are many koala, wallaby and kangaroos on the island, so you can do quite a bit of wildlife spotting. It is a very late ferry crossing back to the mainland and a late evening arrival back into the city.

Quiet stroll

We decided to spend a day off from coach sightseeing and took a Sunday stroll from the leafy area of North Adelaide towards the city – spending a few hours strolling through the beautifully manicured Botanic Gardens. These glorious gardens and the statuesque trees were a quiet rest from the hustle and bustle of the city. Not far from the Adelaide Oval and the casino means that a half day can easily be spent just wandering and exploring under your own steam.

To finish off our days in this vibrant, healthy and wealthy southern city, we headed for the Adelaide Hills in search of Hahndorf; the picturesque town built around German settlers who came out from Hamburg to start a new life in Australia. The ever-changing scenery on the drive from Adelaide through this diverse region included passing cellar doors, quaint villages and beautiful national parks with koala simply hanging in the gum trees.

The spectacular views from Mount Lofty looking out over the panoramic countryside leave a glowing impression of this region, which has so much waiting to be discovered.

John says the restriction is only on kiwifruit and shelter plants, however, they are talking to other nurseries from outside the priority zone about the potential risks of moving any nursery stock outside of Te Puke.

“We want to make the retail nurseries and the people buying plants aware of the risks and if there is a transaction where that plant is possibly going to go onto an orchard – we would expect those plants to be treated before they’re moved.

3 4 0 2 Kiwifruit Vine Health general manager John Burke says the public has to be aware if they’re moving plant material, particularly from around the priority zone, that even though it might not be kiwifruit – it still has the risk of having Psa spores on it.

“In theory, they could take a rose bush from a retail nursery in Te Puke, plant it on the end of a kiwifruit orchard in Katikati and infect that orchard.

“So everyone needs to be conscious of that,” says John.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has put restrictions on nurseries in Te Puke from selling plants.

The controls prohibit the movement of any kiwifruit nursery stock out of a designated zone known as a controlled area – this controlled area surrounds the Te Puke township and includes the areas where properties infected with the more virulent type of Psa (Psa-V) are located, as well as a surrounding buffer zone. This controlled area notice does not restrict the movement of either fruit itself or kiwifruit pollen.

“That could be disinfected by spraying with copper or some other treatment.”

John says they are trying to find a way of sterilising nursery plants using heat treatment.

“If we can do that, it means those plants could be used both within and outside Te Puke in the future.

“Sterilising with the heat treatment means if they have any Psa within the tissue of the plant, the Psa is destroyed.

“If we are unable to do that – we would have to look at our options after that.”

The two nurseries within the priority zone both have plants infected with Psa, says John.

“We are going to destroy those plants, starting immediately, by burying them on the property.”

Top tips for winter gardening Growth has slowed in the garden, but say now is the time to prepare for spring.

Bethlehem Palmers Garden Centre staff member Laurie says it is a good time to sow green manure crops in beds that lie bare over winter to help keep weeds down and condition soil.

“If people don’t have a vegetable garden now it’s a good time to plant a green crop – lupin is a good one that fixes nitrogen in the soil,”

says Laurie. Green manure crops – including legumes and mustard – are a natural way of enriching soil nitrogen levels and increasing the humus level of soil so it retains more moisture. The crops must be dug into the earth after they flower so nitrogen is released as the plants decay.

Laurie says it is helpful to dig the plants in as soon at they bud up before they get “too woody”.

He says mustard has the same benefits as legume crops like lupin, but also is a natural

“The weather is still warm. It’s an excellent time to be planting trees and shrubs before it is too late,” he says.

Now is ideal for planting camellias, rhododendrons or any shrubs.

Laurie recommends digging a hole twice the size of the root-ball, then surrounding the roots with earth mixed with compost and blood and bone.

It is also a good time to prepare for planting deciduous trees in June and he suggests

digging in compost in areas where they will be planted. Other jobs he suggests doing now are spreading fallen leaves as mulch around garden beds or adding them to the compost heap.

“Compost heaps are another whole story – you could write a book on them,” he says.

Laurie says in autumn and winter it is important to keep your compost covered so it stays dry and warm and is regularly turned to encourage break down.

Grant – who owns Webber Refrigeration and Air Conditioning – has been helping people get the most from their heat pumps for 17 years since the efficient electric heaters started becoming popular.

“It’s like anything that’s a mechanical system, it needs maintenance once a year – or twice a year (if used extensively),” he says.

Grant says regular servicing extends the life of a heat pump and ensures efficient power use.

“You can compare it to a car with flat tyres and dirty oil – it is obviously not going to perform as efficiently.”

While anybody can sell a heat pump, Grant also offers servicing, maintenance and help with breakdowns.

“So it doesn’t matter what type you’ve got we should be able to help.”

Insulation for healthier homes Ensuring insulation is up to standard is one of the most important things to look at when trying to create a warmer, drier, healthier, more energyefficient home to live in.

There are two key reasons why insulation is important; the first is to keep the heat in the home – helping it to stay at a more even temperature; the second thing is to help stop the wind and moisture from entering the home. Both of these working together help to make heating run more efficiently – therefore keeping the home warmer and drier to live in.

So how does insulation work and what are some of the things that need checking in the home?

Houses lose about 30-40 per cent of heat through the ceiling, this is where ceiling insulation is crucial.

A quick way to check if insulation is up to standard is to take a look in the ceiling. The insulation should be a minimum of 100mm thick, this is normally the height of the ceiling battens. It also needs to be laid out nicely so that there are no big gaps.

The next area to check is the under floor. Insulation here is all about stopping the wind and moisture from entering the home.

Research has revealed as much as

200 litres a week rises from the ground. Things to check here are; is there polythene laying on the ground?

This is the first defence in stopping moisture from rising. Then check if the under floor is insulated and again ensure it has no holes or gaps in it.

Another area to check in the home is the curtains. If possible, it is best to ensure they have thermal lining on them as they play a key part when insulating the home.

Think light before building Lighting the home may seem like a simple task when building or renovating, but it can make a huge difference on the ambience of the space.

Lighting walls and ceilings can make rooms look larger. Downlights take a lot more lights to achieve good light levels.

Light walls and ceilings Because walls and ceilings are often lighter in colour than the

floor, by lighting the walls and ceilings you can make a room look larger and brighter than if the lights are focused on the floor.

While having rows and rows of downlights may make sense on a plan, they generally focus lighting on the floor so will require

more lights – and a lot more energy – to achieve the level of lighting desired. Poor design wastes energy and reduces how dramatic a house will look.

Consider what you need the lighting to do in each particular space.

Is it to provide mood or ambience such as in living or dining areas or provide crisp, bright light for tasks such as food preparation in kitchens or for applying makeup in bathrooms?

Light tasks such as kitchen benches, seating areas, architectural features such as columns, niches and art.

Utilise unlit zones where there is only

circulation and no tasks to add effect.

Within reason, areas of lower light will make the lit objects and areas stand out and appear more dramatic while using fewer fittings and keeping ceilings clean.

Dimming light lets you control mood and achieve appropriate levels of lighting for tasks.

It can also help save power and increase the life of light bulbs. Additionally, by placing different lights in a space on separate switches, you can choose to turn on only selected lights – ideal for setting the mood wanted or providing just the light needed for a specific task.

Leaky home research shows positive outlook Leaky building specialist Bryan Holyoake says ground-breaking research on over 1500 buildings at risk of leaky home syndrome shows only one in 10 require recladding.

These findings go against a commonly-held belief that monolithic-clad buildings need to be reclad by default to fix them.

Bryan, the technical director of Step Up Group, a New Zealand wide leaky building resolution umbrella group, says this research shows if owners of at-risk buildings have them assessed thoroughly they have a 90 per cent chance of showing the building is worth more than the market estimates.

He says the lack of knowledge surrounding the leaky problem means property owners are being unfairly penalised with lower values just

says, “to prove the building is sound, or that issues do exist so that they can be resolved.”

“At the minimum you need to know the condition, treatment levels and moisture levels of the structural timber right in the base of your walls in typically 80-100 key locations around the perimeter of your house on all levels.

“You then need to install permanent moisture sensors into these locations to regularly check the moisture readings at least every six months as moisture levels change over time due to leaks and seasonal changes.

Brightening a dark space As a pitch to get parents standing away from the classrooms, artist Shannon Avery used her artistic and home painting skills to create a mural that has brought new life to a dark wall at Mount Maunganui Primary School.

“I had an idea to pitch to the school to sell them on the idea,” says Shannon.

“A lot of parents stand outside the classrooms when picking the kids up from school and I thought this would give them something to look

at while they wait.”

Shannon noticed the dark wall visible from the road and enlisted the help of the school to renovate the area.

“The principal was really into it.

He said take the money, buy the paint and do it.”

The 3m high wall features a mural, themed around the idea of dental nurses, to create “something really different”.

“I decided to do something different – not standard cabbage trees and the Mount – something a bit abstract and the kids really loved it,” says Shannon.

Stage time for trio Bethlehem College Piano trios 239 Strings and Red Piano Trio are getting stage time amongst the community with big up-coming opportunities.

The Oriana Singer’s have invited the two trios as guest artists in the upcoming concert Sing, Sing, Sing on June 11 and 12.

The 239 Strings junior trio features a pianist and two violinists. The senior Red Piano trio has been playing together for some time, while the junior trio have

been together since the start of this year.

The trios will also be playing in the NZ Chamber Music Competitions two days after the concerts, and Heather Bernau from Oriana Singer’s says the concerts give the trios ample stage and performance practice time for the competition.

Director of Music at Bethlehem College Tom Jarrett says the trios are “really talented”, and despite their age are welladvanced in their skills.

“The younger trio are really excellent performers despite only forming this year.

Street dancing to hit the stage Street dancing is returning to Bay Court stage at the second annual Bay of Plenty regional youth hip hop competition ‘Project’.

Event organiser Sarah Martin says this year’s event has built on the success of last year’s initial competition – with 20 school crews taking part, up from 14 in 2010.

“Last year it was brilliant. Everyone was amazed at what these kids were doing,” she says.

Sarah, who combines running a Papamoa dance studio with her role as Street Dance NZ’s production manager, stresses hip hop offers the students more than just a chance to perform.

Other positive flow-on effects she lists are improvements in the dancer’s behaviour, boosting confidence and helping them develop team-work and leadership skills.

“Street dance is a great vehicle to empower young people to believe in themselves and their future.

“It can grow them in all areas of their lives – mentally, emotionally and physically.”

Greenpark School is one of many schools to enter the regional hip hop competition ‘Project’ for the first time this year.

Teacher and dance coach Stephanie McEvoy says there has been strong interest – particularly from the girls – and expects the competition to be an annual event for the school.

“I think they love it because it’s street dancing and because there are no fixed rules,” she says.

Stephanie says members of the nine-girl crew ‘Epic Dimensions’ – which is made up of Year 5 and 6 girls – had been training three hours a week, including a session with a choreographer from competition organiser Urban Dance Youth Trust.

The correct treatment of headlice is an important lesson being taken to Pyes Pa schools by Year 2 Bay of Plenty Polytechnic nursing students.

Second year student Anna Balfour says students studies identified the Pyes Pa area as having a headlice issue.

After hearing horror stories around the country, the nurses wanted to ensure children were receiving correct treatment.

“The Poison Centre has said people are using inappropriate methods to treat nits including kerosene and sheep drench. These treatments are unsafe and it is important for us to let schools know that this is happening and ensure correct treatment is followed.”

The nursing students are conducting presentations and sending information out in school newsletters.

Preventing ageism abuse World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is the opportunity to speak up against elder abuse says Age Concern Tauranga.

On Tuesday, June 15 and the days round it, Age Concerns around the country will join the global community in raising awareness of elder abuse and neglect with Purple Ribbon Day. Age Concern Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Services confirm at least two cases of elder abuse each day on average, however, they know that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

“We know that 70 to 80 percent of elder abuse and neglect in New Zealand occurs at the hands of family members,” says Jane from Age Concern Tauranga.

“This is one of the reasons it stays hidden – many older people won’t speak out because they feel so ashamed their family member is treating them so badly. Sometimes they are scared that if they say something, it will get even worse.”

This year there’s a special focus on elder financial abuse. Older people have the right to decide how they use their money. Jane says speak up if you suspect financial abuse.

“Some people think that because someone is old, it doesn’t matter what happens to them anymore. They make decisions for the older person without even asking them what it is they want. “We believe attitudes like this show a lack of respect for the older person, for their quality of life and for their needs.”

Old whiskey family hits town Tauranga Bourbon enthusiasts are in for a treat next week, with a visit by a member of the latest generation of the 200-year-old Kentucky Jim Beam family distillery.

Seven generations on since Jacob Beam sold his first barrel of whiskey in 1795, the family legacy and connection remains strong.

Making an appearance at Liquorland Tauranga is bourbon ambassador Frederick Booker Noe III – the master distiller at the Jim Beam distillery in Clermont, Kentucky.

Frederick, who has spent more than two decades working at the distillery built by his great-grandfather, Jim Beam, will share the art and history behind his family’s legacy.

He has a deeply ingrained passion for bourbon and worked closely with his father Frederick Booker Noe II on the development of his signature bourbon; Booker’s.

Kentucky born and raised, Frederick lives in the same house in which Jim Beam himself lived in more than 80 years ago.

Under his father’s watchful eye, he dedicated himself to perfecting the closely guarded bourbon-making process.

Frederick describes himself at heart as a family man and says he had such a feeling of “pride and tradition” the first time he went to the distillery with his father.

“Decades later, I still feel the same way. This is much more than a job, it’s my life and I love every minute of what I do.”

Liquorland Mount Maunganui manager John Campbell expects strong interest in the event.

People will have the chance to have their collectable bottles autographed and any questions answered.

Husband and wife wine passion Like Anna Flowerday’s personality, you just know the wines produced by her and her husband, fellow winemaker Jason, are sure to reflect their drive and passion for the industry.

Te Whare Ra was established in 1979; making it one of the oldest vineyards in Marlborough. Anna and Jason take a very “hands-on approach” in both the vineyard and the winery. Anna says “they produce wines they like to drink”. You only need to try their wines to know they obviously have good taste.

The 2010 Sauvignon Blanc produced from grapes in the cooler dryer region of the Awatere Valley is a very distinctive wine. Lovely and crisp with gooseberry and white currant flavours supported by fruity acids.

Gluten-free alternative Polenta is such a delicious versatile product to work with and the Polenta ai Porcini (polenta with porcini mushrooms), just has that extra flavour punch.

Polenta is an excellent product for those who are gluten intolerant.

It is so quick to prepare. Simply pour into boiling salted water for five minutes and continue to stir.

You can vary the thickness to your liking by altering the water quantity. Serve with grated Permigiano cheese and add a knob of butter. I used it as a crumb mixture to create an exquisite dish with white veal. Coat the veal lightly with seasoned cornflour, dip in beaten egg and crumb with Polenta ai Porcini. the polenta mix.

Happy on the Hopper

Workers, customers deserve respect

I met a man in an electrified wheelchair on the Welcome Bay bus, who informed me that someone had written to the papers, complaining about the rude Hopper Bus drivers.

He said he’s never come across a bad one yet. I agreed. I have lived in Tauranga since 1990 and have no transport of my own, have always used the buses.

I’d like to say a thank you to the driver who waited for me, whilst I tried to run from just past the Landscape Gardeners on 15th Avenue to where he waited at the Burrows Street bus shelter for me.

So thank you to all Hopper Bus drivers, and keep up the good works.

I worry about the mentality of some of our councillors when I read in Faulkner’s corner, June 3, the concerns Bill and Larry Baldock have with the parking issues in the CBD. I wonder if Bill thinks business owners, their employees and their customers are from a different planet. The people who work and earn an income and their customers deserve the same respect and privileges as they would receive in any other business area in Tauranga. This privilege is of course monitored free parking.

The working people are the city centres bread and butter and parking is just as important to them as anyone else and we have to trust their judgement and maybe allow them to park on the little used northern waterfront area for free. The CBD should not be the cash cow for the council who appear to be using the parking building debt for an excuse to extract money to spend on other projects. This debt should have been paid for many years ago instead of spending it on buses, walkways and cycle tracks throughout

the city. The financial issues of the parking buildings are not the fault of the customers or businesses of the CBD. The council could still charge for the parking buildings if they felt the need to continue to make money from parking and they could include Willow Street as well to keep the traffic moving for them selves if they think this is necessary. The rest of the CBD has to be 3 hours monitored free parking to be able to compete with the other shopping centres.

The other alternative, if the council is so short of funds, is to meter Mount Maunganui and Greerton and any other council owned shopping area. This could be difficult as recently the council was considering charging for on street parking at the Mount but apparently the Mainstreet manager took a petition around all of the businesses and because of the overwhelming opposition to this the council quickly dropped the idea.

Again the question has to be asked what makes the CBD so different to anywhere else in Tauranga.

When is the government going to fully enforce the cyclists law which they hastily brought in, where one must wear a crash helmet and be fully visible with lights in the darkness hours?

It would be very interesting to get the accident statistics from ACC to bicycle related accidents without helmets/lights.

Its appalling how many of all ages openly flout this law, 12 months of the year, causing mayhem in the darkness hours, for they are a nightmare for both cyclists and pedestrians.

Our local MP, Simon Bridges, ex Crown Prosecutor, who sits on a Law and Order select committee, why isn’t

he insuring the public and asking the questions of the Minister of Transport/ ACC/Health/Police why this law is not being fully enforced.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the Police let the motorists alone for a couple of months and fully target and enforce the cyclist law (it would be a lovely cash injection earner for the government who are crying out for money).

What is our justice system worth, if the laws put into motion by our incumbent politicians on the goodwill of NZ citizens is not upheld fully in principle?

History claims just don’t stack up There are some patently false claims in the letter by Gloria McIsaac.

Early recorded history shows that Maori rarely solved any conflict by Hui, although Missionaries strived hugely to encourage this (largely foreign) concept of discussion and compromise that forms the basis of modern Hui. The Maori tradition of Utu meant that territorial disputes revolved around ceaseless invasion and slaughter and had done for centuries before European arrival.

The major difference once Europeans turned up was that Maori were able to vastly increase their killing power by use of muskets. Faced with the increasing death toll, it is a recorded fact that many Maori were a driving force behind the treaty which they viewed as providing them with protection from other tribes.

To try to claim otherwise is to falsify our history.

The idea of Maori being unique

‘Guardians of the Land’ does not stack up when it is remembered that preEuropean Maori hunted many abundant animals to extinction in a short period of time such as Moa and the Haast Eagle and repeatedly burned off forever the massive South Island alpine forests.

Maori verbal history records tribes exhausting areas of their resources and then moving on to repeat this process elsewhere. Resources were, as is the case everywhere in the world, a driving force of inter-tribal conflict.

I will get in before the apologists and add that I am not claiming other races are necessarily any better, rather that all people have similar potential and abilities of conflict and harmony, of exploitation and of conservation and to pretend otherwise is to do everyone in our country a great disservice.

Unjust, flawed Sir, Bill Faulkner’s aside at Regional Council for lack of funding to help dredge the Kopurererua Canal in Judea Valley is both unjust and flawed.

The interesting history of Judea Valley includes Maori Mythology, a historical waterway link up the original meandering Kopurererua Srteam through to the present canal construction.

I have a copy of the original land owners holdings and the canal plans dating back to 1924. The Judea Drainage Board was formed to help drain the low lying swamp land for farming, with the land involved then, having a rateable unimproved valuation of 10,893 pounds. The scheme to widen and straighten the old stream bed was carried out for these landholders.

The inference that the Catchment Commission regularly maintained canal to my knowledge is not credible. The Commission

Make a lake was not least interested in such work in Western Bay, except latterly for the Kaituna scheme. By the time Regional Council came into being, the harbour outfall to Kopurererua Stream had been plugged with a new industrial area at Judea. This was done without any provision to take the inevitable flow of water from, that previously flooded the now industrial land.

The inadequacies of past planning now became apparent and surely rests firmly in the Tauranga City lack of foresight...The answer no doubt may involve widening the Judea road bridge and lower canal to take the higher water runoffs. Interesting no one from local government was interested in preventing flooding of farmland in valley except the farmers, but now having a city problem, the Regional Council are scapegoat for past inaction.

Last weekend’s TV of MP Bridges at the Auckland SPCA made good viewing. Simon’s reluctance to get up close and personal with the two pitbull mongrels was understandable. The SPCA has been finding homes for these mongrels, that is pitbull plus some other canine mix, bred by people with no thought or use for the result. These mongrels should be destroyed, not foisted on the community as pets. Any pitbull mix is dangerous as a pet. The proof is the weekly roundup of savaged victims needing surgery. In his cavalier attitude towards the Regional Council with regards to the dredging of the Kopurererua stream, councilor Faulkner seems to have overlooked the fact that the silting of this stream is an indication of how much silt is flowing into and deposited in the Waikareao Estuary.

When they realigned the stream a few years ago it was then again suggested to make a large lake through which the stream would run to catch the silt coming from upstream.

This would at the same time have enhanced the splendid work the Rotary Clubs are doing in their creation of a native area in that valley.

It would have been a win-win-win situation: • a beautiful pond for water- and wading birds • no need to dredge the lower Kopurererua stream • less silt in the estuary with as a consequence less proliferation of the mangroves there.

This lake still can be created, probably for the same cost as the intended dredging of the stream in a built up area.

Clarkson and Brash It is with huge relief that I read that Bob Clarkson has moved to the Act Party. During his short stint as MP for Tauranga, Clarkson made a name for himself in Parliament with his vacuous mis-cues causing much embarrassment to the National Party. What a relief to have him replaced by our hard-working MP Simon Bridges.

Clarkson admitted he was out of his depth in Parliament but he should be quite at home in the Act Party with similar people. Clarkson’s main and magnificent achievement was getting rid of Winston Peters. He and Don Brash both suffer from foot-inthe -mouth disease so he will be in good company.

Caring, compassion?

Barbaric slaughter: I agree with Messrs McKernon and Mitchell – the

slaughter of swans is barbaric. To the shooters it is sport. They enjoy killing, not because they are hungry or need to feed their families. It must be quite expensive to purchase all that gear.

I thought we were a civilised country, but we do have the highest rate of child abuse in the Western World apparently, and can murder innocent babies without punishment, using the ‘Code of Silence”. So what do a hundred or so swans matter.

Shame on you.

In a flap over swans what about the child?

As Bay residents flap over the rights of black swans, the Judiciary in their privileged positions have taken it upon themselves to declare the child in the womb (the beating heart of our society’s future) to be devoid of the right to life.

The weight of the Law rightfully falls hard on someone who dismembers a live kitten yet that same Law corruptly turns a blind eye to the dismemberment of a child in the womb.

The Christian values that built western society and underpin the rights we have enjoyed are being trampled on, in favour of the values of the creeping atheism (euphemistically termed Secular) that are slowly dominating our way of life.

We are having imposed on us the values that drove the Atheistic regimes of last century to murder 100 million of their own ‘unwanted’ citizens.

Let the old, those intending to grow old, the infirm and minorities protest loudly before their voice is silenced by the ‘final solution’ of this insidious philosophy.

(Yet I always understood I was a living being right from the moment of conception) But according to a report on Prime TV 1 June 2011 parents, doctors and the State can all legally kill that yet to be born living child. (TV1 chose to ignore this item) Oh dear, when in 1950 I came to NZ it was called ‘Gods own country’ but now I feat it should be the ‘God forsaking country’ following down the path that Hitler led when he declared Jews, gypsies, homosexuals and all malformed as vermin and only fit for the gas chambers. Our esteemed judges have taken another step on this slippery slope and no baby kicking around in the womb is ever going to be safe again.

On reading the article and letters in the Weekend Sun 3 June, regarding Mr. P. McKernon’s objections about the killing of swans and the subsequent xenophobic comments about him, I noted that none of the points he raised have actually been answered!

How sad it is that we vilify someone for caring! I feel we as a nation need a more caring attitude in our daily lives, don’t forget we are rated highly in the world for child abuse, I wonder if this lack of compassion amongst hunters has an influence in this matter?

Pointing out swans are monogamous was to perhaps try and evoke some of this compassion? Instead it provoked a flippant homophobic comment!

As I see it Mr McKernon’s main objection is the ‘pleasure’ shooters (irrelevant of social standing and occupation) take from killing, this is so primitive (the meaning of Neanderthal!) and should be of concern to us all.

The miss-interpretation of the ‘Death to dog author’ letter is absurd, the writer was obviously pointing out the fact, in a sarcastic manner, that after swans may come the demise of the dog!

As a final note, saying it’s economical to shoot swan for food? Taking into consideration, the cost of guns, shells, camouflage gear, fuel and all other expenses in return for the small amount of meat would hardly be cost effective?

The fact remains that the shoot is purely for fun, they just enjoy the Thrill of the kill!

I for one would much rather live in a nation with a caring, compassionate population who show empathy towards animals not one that takes pleasure from killing them.

Pooing swans targets It seems, if all the pro killing swan letters are taken seriously, the one day of killing swans, big ones, easy tame targets will most definitely save the harbour.

I guess when they’ve finished committing swans to the pot, those brave hunting (no, read killing instead of hunting) types, who are so desperate to save the harbour, will then lock their guns away and get into studying estuarine ecology and the importance of bio diversity. If they do, and if they really did shoot swans as a public service, then these environmental studies will show them that they don’t have to kill and mutilate swans again next year.

They’ll learn the harbour is not under threat from swans, human lifestyle will not change as a result of too much swan poo. Instead of justifying turning the harbour into a killing field, these newly enlightened hunters may inspire their children into respecting each individual form in which life is manifest.

Who knows, this may lead to their kids learning to respect all life, which will lead to them respecting their own life, then, indisputably, that will grow to a strong sense of self respect. A child with an unfailing sense of self respect is likely to have a great passage through life. It is unlikely that anyone with a strong sense of self respect would try and bullsh*t those around him that blowing relatively harmless and beautiful animals to bits is vital for conservation any more than people embued with a strong sense of self respect would believe it.

CBD parking – not free yet Tauranga City Council is reporting there is public confusion over when the central city parking is becoming free on Saturdays.

She says after July 1 when the free Saturday parking in the CBD begins, there will still be tickets issued for overstayers and for vehicles with no registrations or warrant of fitness.

Phillipa Bayley’s young pitbull puppy is accused of engaging in the attack and so Phillipa as its owner is now charged with owning a dog that attacked a person. This charge is in addition to the main charge she faces of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily.

Mount Maunganui’s hot salt water pools are to receive a rebuild and upgrade of pumps, pipework and filters to the tune of $1-1.5 million. Tauranga City Aquatics Limited received Tauranga City Council approval to go ahead with the project on Wednesday at a workshop meeting. TCAL chair Warren Banks says the refurbishment will see the pools closed for about five months while problems are fixed and an upgrade to modern standards completed.

Assault on school grounds

The 17 year old girl who allegedly assaulted a Mount Maunganui College pupil on school grounds during an interval on Tuesday has turned herself over to police. Constable Eve Matheson says the girl presented herself at the Mount Maunganui police station when she found out she was wanted by police in connection with the assault. The 17 year old is unemployed, from Mount Maunganui and is due to appear in the Tauranga District Court next Tuesday, June 14.

The kiwifruit industry has set a new logistics record at the Port of Tauranga by handling the most trays of Zespri fruit ever delivered there in a 12 hour period. The record was set when 832,000 trays of fruit were processed there – equating to a container being loaded every four and a half minutes. Tauranga Kiwifruit Logistics’ Ian Mearns says while the loading of the 160 containers in one day is a record, he wants it to become a standard for the industry.

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council is considering contributing money to the construction of the ‘Home of Cycling’ in Cambridge through its Ten Year Plan. The initial bid for $4 million from Bay of Plenty local government authorities was directed towards it through its annual plan process.

Council chairman John Cronin says the proposal is referred to the Ten Year Plan to enable a closer examination of the issue than is possible through the annual plan process.

Comment of the Week: By user wreck 1080 about overly officious parking wardens in the weeks ahead of parking in the CBD being made free on Saturdays: “I parked at the Mount Maunganui boat ramp parks mid week. Most parks were empty, so sat in the car, ate lunch and used the free EOL wifi.

However, the ‘warden’ came and threatened to ticket me if I did not move. I pointed out

(nicely), that the spaces were mostly empty and I would move if necessary. However, the warden replied sarcastically “It doesn’t work that way.” I have no problem with ticketing in general, but surely these clowns can use some commonsense. My significant rates pay for those parks, I don’t see why I shouldn’t be able to use them when the boating people are not boating.”

Size matters Every so often people will tell you that size doesn’t matter, but it does. Sometimes bigger is better, sometimes smaller.

I was thinking about that the other day while browsing the shelves of my local DVD store.

I used to call it my local video store, but video tape, VHS, has long gone. Now I notice that the blu-ray section has moved. It had to because it’s expanding at such a rate.

DVDs cases are, of course, smaller than video cases. If you see an old VHS tape now it looks big and clunky compared to the small sleek look of DVD. But now DVDs are being replaced. It’ll happen much more slowly than the radical improvement of VHS to DVD, but it’s definitely happening.

And, once again, the boxes are getting smaller. Blu-rays, presumably to show that they’re even better than DVD, come in even smaller cases. It makes sense: you can fit more of them on the shelves.

But the problem for the shop must come when people are at the point of being evenly split between the two formats – you can’t take DVDs off the shelves, but you need everything on blu-ray as well for your blu-ray customers. Where do you actually put all the stock?

It could take years before some of the more

specialist DVDs make it to blu-ray (if ever), so you’ve got to have both formats.

This is about to become an even more complicated conundrum since, very soon, a whole pile of blu-rays are about to come out in 3D format. It’s started already: there are about half a dozen titles for those who happen to have Sony Playstations and have invested in 3D TVs. I say ‘Playstations’ because they are upgradeable to 3D, while standalone 3D bluray players are still quite pricey.

By the way, I’m talking here about ‘real’ 3D, the sort that Avatar started, not the thing with red and green-lensed glasses.

The thing you’ll probably notice first if you try it at home is that your ‘old’ 46 inch television probably isn’t enough. 46 inches may look big in 2D but something about having that 3D image makes it suddenly look very small.

If you want 3D at home you’ll want at least a 50 inch TV. Bigger here is definitely better.

So the time is coming (again) when we’re all expected to replace our entire audio visual equipment with another set that costs more and is even bigger. Thus the human race continues its mad spiral towards consumer overload.

And, talking of small versus large, I went over to Rotorua last weekend for their annual Blues Festival, and a splendid event it was too. It reminded me, in a way, of how the jazz festival here was when it first moved downtown: music

in eight or nine bars, a couple of concerts, and it was great! It rained (of course) but there was a real community atmosphere and a closeness to the artists – the guests from overseas sat in and jammed with bands and the whole thing was friendly and informal.

I know Tauranga can’t be like that again, but it made me wonder a little about the things I keep reading, about the National Jazz Festival wanting to hold a really big concert to celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.

I do understand the idea. And the 50th is – make no mistake – a Big Deal, a fantastic achievement and part of a lasting heritage for Tauranga. But is the best way to celebrate it by bringing an even bigger overseas artist to the Bay, one who would – could? – attract at least five thousand people? I have difficulty even imagining who in the jazz world would be that kind of draw here.

And I say ‘here’ deliberately. Tauranga is Tauranga and, without wanting to sound offensive or patronising, the audience at the jazz festival is not largely a jazz-educated one.

Sure there are jazz buffs in the crowds, but the vast majority of punters just want to have a good time and take in a few sounds.

As with the economy, sometimes growth isn’t everything; as with blu-rays, sometimes higher quality comes in smaller packages.

during his four month stay in Paris in 1778 and are deliberately Parisian in style, reflected in the haughty and dramatic beginnings of each. The Debussy and Ravel works are rather more exotic and impressionistic.

All of it was a feast for the eyes and ears.

Accompanying the fine acoustics of the theatre was a well accomplished orchestra, but special mention must go to Peter Walls, conductor and Helen Webby and Agnes Harmath, whose harp and flute respectively were played with alluring grace and poise.

Slowly, but surely, the Opus Orchestra is building a strong reputation in the Western Bay of Plenty. Its vision of providing the highest possible standard of musical performance in our region is being fulfilled.

Dir: Joel & Ethan Coen. Starring: Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Hailee Steinfeld I am an unabashed devotee of the Coen brothers. I love the perfection of their films, and I love the imperfections too. I’m also aware that some find them, not to put too fine a point on it, a bit smart-assy.

No such problems here.

The last thing I’d ever have expected from the Coens was a remake of an old John Wayne movie, even if the remake takes the original book as its source rather than the film. And what they have done is make not only a far superior film, but also There’s no denying it: Unstoppable () is an undoubtedly well-oiled piece of fluff. Denzel Washington is the grizzled old railroad guy, about to be laid off. Chris Pine is the cocky newcomer, first day at work.

And there’s a runaway train full of dangerous chemicals about to hit a major town. Oh, and there’s a train full of schoolkids too…

It’s complete crap of course, but it’s excitingly made, with director Tony Scott’s usual over-adrenalized mix of saturated colours and fast editing. In fact, it looks a lot like Pelham 123, the director’s previous, also train-set, film. Turn it up, eat popcorn, have a good time.

A French gangster pic starring the epically cool Jean Reno – what’s not to like? 22 Bullets () is something of a French Point Blank as Reno’s Charly Mattei, a former Marseilles mafioso godfather, is gunned down with the titular munitions. But it wouldn’t be much of a story if he didn’t survive and set about exacting revenge. So it’s not the most original tale – “I try to get out, but they keep pulling me back in” – but it’s all done with slick French style, Marseilles looking fabulous and providing an unusually colourful multicultural backdrop.

True Grit tells the story of plucky 14 year old Matty, whose father has been murdered. She sets out to bring the killer (Josh Brolin) to justice, picking up as help Bridges’ ornery old sheriff and Damon’s amusingly self-regarding Texas Ranger. Together they set off into the badlands of the old west.

With its exotic Bangkok location and interesting pairing of Djimon Hounsou and Kevin Bacon, Elephant White () suggests it could be more than the routine – and not a little silly – action outing it is.

Hounsou’s ex-mercenary killer gets a taste for assassinating nasty sex-trading gang members after being hired to avenge a businessman’s daughter.

Bacon (bizarrely and iffily playing English) supplies large guns and there’s a vaguely irritating girl who hangs around acting weirdly.

Despite a strong visual sense, this is trashy stuff: beneath an attractive surface lurks a script, story, and mystical undercurrents that would embarrass even Steven Segal.

After burning down an abandoned farmhouse, a disturbed Amber heard is thrown

story, taking a lot of its dialogue straight from the book but including moments of strangeness that would not seem out of place in Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man. You also have at least two brilliant central turns: Bridges is pure magic, slowly revealing complexities and compassion while remaining true and believable. And Hailee Steinfeld, not much older than her tough young character, is a wonder. The cinematography is superb. The music is touching. The whole thing is pretty much as perfect as they come.

Taking over control of the stage Directing a cast and crew of 60 teenagers can’t be an easy task, but it is one Tauranga Boys’ College teacher Andrew McKenzie is taking in his stride.

“They have all been extremely good,” says Andrew who is directing the school’s production of Grease.

“They seem to be a very motivated – quick on the up-take, great at keeping up with the work load, learning lines and coming to rehearsals with ideas about their characters.”

Andrew is a theatre graduate from

Allen Hall in Otago University.

He later went to Wellington to complete his Masters degree at Toi Whakaari, before coming to teach drama at Tauranga Boys’ College.

“Directing is my stronger suit (rather than acting),” says Andrew.

“Directing, you get to step back and look at the whole picture and think about the mechanics of how the play works. It is also about eliciting performances out of actors.”

In terms of this production, Andrew says his take on Grease isn’t anything “strange or unusual”, but the straightforward adaption allows him to bring his own sensibilities and the freedom to explore the characters.

“It involves a conversation between the performers and me.

Obviously, we have a huge say in how the characters are because we decided who was who. Then once the roles are cast, the assumption is; we like the idea of your character, lets work together to develop it a bit more.”

With a play that is littered with heavy-handed themes, Andrew says he was “really impressed with the level of maturity and selfreliance” the cast has shown.

Having directed musicals and productions before, both during his studies for companies and

schools productions such as this, he says directing musicals is something he really enjoys.

“When directing musicals, there is a much greater emphasis on logistics. They are very large

and everyone else has a day job – and some have night jobs too. For musical, the key question is about preparation and logistics management.”

We’ve all been there. You end up travelling with some friends, acquaintances or family, but after a few weeks go by, tempers start to fray, frustrations come out and relationships of all kinds are tested.

Four Flat Whites in Italy focuses on Alison (Giddens) and Adrian (Baker) – both retired librarians – who after scrimping and saving finally has enough money to holiday in Italy with their close travelling friends. However, complications arise and the trip

seems unlikely to go ahead, until new neighbours Judy (Cawley) and Harry (Nicholson) help them out and agree to travel with them. Personalities clash and tempers rise, making for a comedic journey through Venice, Rome and Tuscany.

The sticking-power of Roger Hall’s well-known and frequently-used comedy is the fact it is relatable. I am not middle aged (the two couples and the majority of the audience was), and have not yet been to Italy, but I understand the frustration and strain holidays can put on relationships. And this is what makes it so funny. Alan Baker narrates us through the scenes, adding personal anecdotes and insight into his thoughts as he addresses the audience. With perfect comic timing, he creates the ‘he is saying what we are all thinking’ effect.

The cast is superb. Alan’s wit provides a counterbalance to Alison’s anal tendencies (his word, not mine), just as the more attractive Judy (Cawley) and her foul-mouthed husband (Nicholson) provides a way of life more liberal to the straight laced librarians.

16th Avenue once again dazzled me with their sets.

And I mean, I was seriously impressed. I feel just as much work was done by the backstage crew for scene changes as there was the cast on stage. We were taken to hotels, around the sights of Venice, to restaurants, to a villa in Tuscany and not to mention on a gondola and driving in a Fiat – they had a moved gondola and Fiat on stage. I was captivated the entire time, and by the end I felt like I had been on a journey through Italy (and am now desperate to actually go to Italy).

This play is punctuated (as most stage comedies are) with moments of genuine sadness and personal problems for the characters, creating believable people. These characters were like people we all knew, OPEN with my friend commenting on similarities between Satu her mother and Alison’s holiday mentality. Set on the background of the Rugby World Cup and a Labour 116 government, the play takes you on a journey of Italy and personal development, encouraging everyone to Tel ww live their life.

Farmer Autovillage has partnered with Tauranga RDA to host an event to raise awareness of the charity, launch fundraising for the new RDA indoor arena and celebrate Fielday specials.

Tauranga RDA Equestrian Therapy Centre provides therapeutic horse related activities for children and adults with physical, mental, cognitive, social or behavioural needs. This includes horse riding, horsemanship and vocational skills.

Horse riding is an activity which stimulates and exercises both mentally and physically. It is ideal for people with disabilities as well as those that are disadvantaged, at risk or have mental and social issues.

Over the last 18 months, the Tauranga RDA has expanded rapidly and provides a service to hundreds of people in the community. The indoor arena will enable riders to receive equestrian therapy in all weather conditions.

Refuelling the mums Fuel Cafe has been set up as a place for mums to ‘refuel’ over a latte and a gourmet muffin.

We know that feeling when the kids are driving you up the wall and you just want to get out of the house, go somewhere warm, comfortable and have a good cup of coffee. Problem is trying to keep your child to sit still at your favourite cafe is such an effort – not to mention all the ‘daggers’ you feel you’re getting from other cafe-goers trying to have a quiet conversation when your child is screaming at the next table.

We know, we’ve all been there. Fuel Cafe is open on a Wednesday morning from 9.30am and invites all mums, with or without children – as long as you’re understanding to the mum with the grizzly child – to come and enjoy a coffee and gourmet muffin for $5. Our venue at Tauranga City Elim Church, behind McDonalds, 11th Avenue, has a well-equipped large play room which is overlooked from the cafe area so that you can keep an eye on your child as they play. Teaching children to share Sharing as defined in Wikipedia is the process of dividing or distributing and the joint use of resource or space.

So why can teaching a child to share be so difficult?

Young children know very little about sharing other than what they have observed from you. Sharing of food is often the easiest concept to understand. At meal times, food is offered to all and pieces are given away never to return (we hope). Children learn about this from the time they are able to sit on your knee and share food from your plate at the table.

So if sharing means giving something away and never getting it back again, why would they then share toys with others – especially if they don’t think they will ever get them back? Separating the concepts of sharing from turn taking often makes the task easier and more easily understood, especially when we want to reduce the frustration and possible violent reactions from our toddlers.

Toddlers and young children around the age of two are very egocentric – they know that there are other children and may even acknowledge them, but the reality is they are

more interested in themselves. At this age they are just learning about the concept of ‘me’ and ‘mine’. This is the time where they are starting to assert their rights to objects whether they belong to them or not. These are ‘my’ shoes and ‘my’ bed because I am being told this over and over again.

Even though they may understand the concept of ownership, they can’t understand that someone else may want the same toy as them. Even stuff that isn’t theirs, they think is ‘mine’. Understanding another person’s point of view really doesn’t begin until around age three or even four.

Celebrating New Zealand parents Celebrate the national organisation, which today has the largest network of parentbased education and support in the country, during Parents Centre Week from June 13 to 19.

Parents Centres New Zealand was formed in 1952, with currently 50 centres around the country dedicated to supporting parents in their roles.

Each centre is run by a dedicated team of volunteer parents; experienced experts facilitate all the parenting classes.
