PR genius pulls off marketing coup Just when we thought we’d seen the worst disasters, along comes the SS TECTANIC.

The trustee elections were going at full steam when the good ship foundered on an iceberg of narrow parameters.

But in the true spirit of conspiracy theories, was it really an accident? Or was it a cleverly executed scheme to bolster voter interest in the TECT Elections?

Here at RR we believe Graeme Purches, the Trust Power PR guy and promoter of the TECT Elections has pulled off a huge marketing coup.

Some say it is a monumental stuff up, but the truth is, sending election packs to incorrect addresses is sheer genius. Full credit must go to Graeme for masterminding this novel promotion method.

Graeme has managed to double the amount of media exposure for the TECT Elections by having a false start.

Not since the 1986 space shuttle disaster has a botch up gained more attention.

Better than that, he did it with no casualties, and even has some candidates excited at the prospect of more exposure.

Stimulating turn out

Candidate Mary Dillon believes the mistake might improve voter turnout.

“Given how traditionally low the vote is maybe an incident like this will stimulate people a bit more in the election process.

“It [traditional voter turnout] is incredibly low – it really is the stuff of very basic democracy isn’t it? It’s to actually respond to those things and say ‘actually, we are part of this community, we have a chance to provide some direction to it’. So why not use it?”

Is it a simple error or a complex conspiracy to increase voter turnout? Graeme’s team has scored tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of individually addressed PR for only $80,000. A bargain surely.

Okay you and I, the TECT shareholders will have to foot the bill, but isn’t it a small price to pay for such brilliance? This is visionary, not even Muldoon’s snap election in the 70s was as successful in generating hype and focusing voter attention.

TrustPower spokesman Graeme Purches says the search parameters used when separating eligible voters from the company’s everyday database had not been broad enough.

Following last week’s Rabbit where we outlined the Idiots Guide to Voting in the elections, all hell has broken loose.

We’ve had a lot of feedback following last week’s column including some letters published this week.

One commentator has criticised candidate’s use of letters to the editor column for electioneering.

But here at RR HQ, we see the letters as a really good way for the candidates to reach the prospective voters along with their paid advertising. How else are prospective trustees going to get their message out there so voters have a chance to hear their policies, philosophies and experience?

Pet peking ducks murdered A Te Puna resident is angry after his pet peking ducks were shot dead and left lying around the banks of his rural property pond.

Jim Wallace was shocked to discover 15 of his prized peking ducks had been callously shot at his beachside rural property.

The ducks were shot out of season from the Western side of his Te Puna property. He believes the ducks were shot with a high powered slug rifle or a .22 rifle as examination of the corpses revealed

“Pukekos are bloody awful birds.

I lost 54 chicks to them last year.

“No one knows they are there.

I’ve got a few theories on who might have killed them. It must be someone who knows they are there.

Jim raised the ducks from chicks after failing to find adults to buy.

“I got one from Paengaroa and then finally I got another chick.

They are very good at keeping the drains clear as they eat the oxygen weed that collects there.”

Under the Wildlife Act peking ducks are classified as domestic fowl and have no protection under the law. However, the SPCA is keen to speak to anyone with information relating to the incident.

New approach could decrease drug problems

Executive director Ross Bell supports the findings of the commission’s review of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975, which included a recommendation low-level drug offenders are subject to a cautioning scheme administered by counsellors rather than progressing through the criminal justice system.

The proposed system, which Ross says has been in place in Australia for a decade, would see small-time offenders given a caution and appearing before a counsellor for a health intervention instead of being dealt with by the courts.

Further offences would be dealt with in the same manner, until the offending was deemed regular or serious enough to be considered by a judge.

The article, and show, shows the fabled notion of the American dream has given way to ‘the game’ – a hustling labyrinth of connections weaving money, drugs and blood through the societal pillars of the docks, public office, schools, journalism, politics and policing.

“I think that article tells in stark reality the impact of the drug war approach in the United States and all of the quite obviously negative consequences of that,” says Ross.

“I think the way we approach the drug problem in New Zealand, while it’s not the full on drug war, the corner busts… I still think there are some similarities.

“The Drug Foundation does favour a different approach to drugs. We don’t support the legalisation or decriminalisation of drugs… but we don’t agree with the heavy reliance on the criminal justice system.”

alcohol and drug treatment prevention, despite New Zealand’s official drug policy calling for a balance between supply, control, treatment and prevention, says Ross, who is buoyed by the recommendations.

“It’s come from the Law Commission – not a pack of stoners.”

The Government is still to signal where it stands, while the Green Party and Labour have both signalled their support at different stages, says Ross.

Data gathered by the Ministry of Health shows that methamphetamine use is decreasing.

A ministry survey shows one per cent of New Zealanders used the drug last year – less than half the number who admitted to using P in a 2007-08 survey.

Ross says it’s difficult to establish cause and effect, but attributes that improvement to the Government providing more treatment for users.

The number of people caught possessing P in the Bay decreased from 98 in 2010 to 82 in 2011.

Detective senior sergeant Chris Cahill says the statistics are evidence the country’s P epidemic peaked early in the millennium.

There were 587 illicit drug offences recorded in 2011 – a decrease of 22.1 per cent.

Teacher confused over minister’s response A Tauranga resident who wrote to the Minister of Education questioning the policy on class sizes is puzzled by why his employer ended up with the ministry’s response.

Executive member of the Post Primary Teachers’ Association and Tauranga teacher Jason Smythe personally wrote to Hekia Parata representing his own interests in regards to class sizes and was shocked when the reply ended up with the school’s board.

“So why did a reply come back to the board chair?” says Jason.

“A private citizen and a constituency member, who happens to be a teacher, writes to my minister - albeit from a school email address, which proves I have some idea of what I’m talking about and gives some background, as I am also an executive member of the Post Primary Teachers’ Association.

“The letter ends up on Minister Parata’s desk and

she writes to the teacher’s employer, a board of trustee’s chair, about letters written by a teacher who writes as a private citizen.

“This is a blatant privacy breach.

“The letter was around the class size issue and my concerns with the direction the Government was heading. I am bewildered by the minister’s comment in her letter to the board chair around research on class size, as I was part of the Secondary Schools’ Staffing Group, which recently produced a report for the Secretary of Education Lesley Longstone.

“The secretary accepted the recommendations of the working party on class size, especially regarding recommendations about big schools, while knowing the Ministry of Education was working on the class cuts agenda.”

He says the episode makes him feel “ignored and unvalued that she didn’t have the courtesy to address the letter to me personally, nor address the concerns I raised”.

“I was angry it was a stock standard answer, which is more apparent now as her glib response to the board chair is essentially a carbon copy of the one in the PPTA release.”

He says another teacher at a WBOP school has also received a similar response.

“The minister is claiming ‘the teacher wrote on behalf of the school so I responded to the organisation’.

“In reading the content of my correspondence, it is clear I was most definitely writing as an individual and not on behalf of the school.”

When asked why she chose her approach, Hekia Parata’s press secretary says it’s the minister’s practice that whenever she receives a letter written to her by a professional on behalf of a school, she replies to the leadership of that school as well as the person who penned it.

“So, basically, if the letter identifies which school it was on behalf, she writes back to the school as well.”

For someone who has spent most of his working life around the theatre it is a surprise to hear Dale Henderson has only performed on stage once.

“You won’t find me on stage – I’m more in a support role. The only time I’ve been on stage was with other staff for Baycourt’s 15th anniversary.”

After 26 years involvement at Baycourt Theatre since starting as the lighting and sound technician, today will be Dale’s last day as the Tauranga council events and venue manager. But he is still likely to be seen occasionally around theatres as he supports the rest of his family who love performing.

For the next six months Dale is dedicating himself to family time, prompted by a re-examination of what was important in his life after council CEO Ken Paterson’s sudden death.

“I decided it was time to think about the family. So it’s all about family for

the next six months.”

Dale shifted to Tauranga for the technician role in 1986 after meeting ‘the woman of my dreams’ when touring with Footrot Flats. It worked out and he and wife Toni have ‘three great kids’.

Since being made Baycourt manager in 1998, his role has expanded to include all council venues and events. He has also overseen major growth in the events sector and had many highlights.

He believes a rich entertainment and cultural sector helps make a healthy society, and that local government funding should reflect that.

“Whilst roads are important, the other things you do to interact with human beings is what makes a community.

Without sports and arts and culture life would be pretty boring.”

But with plans to stand for the council next year, roads could also feature in

Making some ‘noize’ in Vegas Speaking through the language of dance, Papamoa’s Urban Dance crew aim to make some ‘noize’ at the world championships in the US next month.

Noizey boys hip-hop dance crew will be representing New Zealand under the name of Urban Dance Crew at the world hip-hop championships in Las Vegas.

Aged between 12 and 21, Noizey boys will spend 12 days competing as the Urban Dance Crew in the mega crew section of the championships.

The crew leave on July 31 and the competition lasts five days.

The remaining days will be spent

participating in dance workshops to improve the boys’ technique.

Loosely based on fraternity and sorority houses, the Noizey boys will bring a combination of authentic hip-hop movements in a performance of raw energy.

Noizey boys crew member Gabriel Dargaville says the crew tries to differentiate themselves from others to ensure their look is new and fresh.

“Just being able to work with older people makes it that much better, just learning all the knowledge that they have and being able to feed off what their dance style is like and being able to show what we have to them.”

Gabriel uses the language of dance to communicate his emotions.

“Whenever I come to dance,

I just feel happy and feel always loved by people and being able to express how I truly feel.”

In preparation for competition against last year’s first place medallists, the royal family, the crew will participate in a 10-day training camp.

“Because we haven’t been as a proper team for as long as them, we need to work twice as hard,” says Gabriel.

Urban Dance Company director Sarah Martin says New Zealand leads the world in this art form, winning gold for the last four years.

Urban Dance provides a sense of belonging for many of the Sarah’s dancers.

Carpooling has power to save people from Hamilton Anyone keen on giving this young lady a lift?

Twenty-one year old Helen Eynon, of Tauranga, is just one of a number of people in the Bay looking to combine forces to make their travel more efficient and cost effective.

She is registered on www.carpoolworld.com and is offering three seats to Hamilton and back four times a week.

She is also open to the idea of hitching a ride with someone else and is happy to split costs.

After originally studying in Auckland,

Helen moved back home to Tauranga last week and will commence her second year of study towards a BSc majoring in mathematics at Waikato University in Hamilton during the second semester.

A friend turned her on to the idea.

“My flatmate I was living with in Hamilton was carpooling last year, to Hamilton. And I thought if I don’t have to live in Hamilton, I might as well come home, because I don’t really enjoy Hamilton.

“I haven’t actually started yet. I don’t actually know if it’s going to work out,

but hopefully.”

Datasphere Corporation vicepresident Isabelle Boulard says there are currently 78 registered users looking for carpools in the Tauranga area.

She added, however, that the numbers registered can fluctuate due to the ‘volatility’ of the requests.

“There could be more if carpooling was more popular, people don’t really know it can be an option,” says Isabelle.

“People use our service to find other people interested in carpooling and doing the same commute as them. We have people that commute every day and others that use our site for one-time trips.”

Internet scam targets Papamoa church The targeting of a Papamoa church in an internet scam this week has prompted a reminder for everyone to be vigilant about computer security.

St Paul’s Papamoa’s webmail was broken into by hackers who sent a message to everyone in its contact book asking for money to help representatives who had supposedly been robbed on a visit to Spain.

Rev Dr Jaco Reyneke says the email had touched a nerve in recipients, and he knew a handful of people had thought about giving money.

“I was upset and angry because it’s putting our image at risk. We had a few people ringing to ask where they could send the money to help.”

Jaco believes nobody sent money, but had trouble contacting everyone as the address book was deleted. He is disappointed the church is being preyed on, saying he thought the scammers were taking advantage of churchgoers’ generous spirit and naiveté with internet scams.

Ministry of Consumer Affairs spokesman Alastair Stewart says

Scamwatch has received reports of scammers obtaining access to personal email, instant messaging or social media accounts and using these in an attempt to trick people.

“The scammers normally claim they are in financial trouble while travelling, or that they have won an amazing prize, and you can too.”

Strong, random passwords should be used and changed regularly to avoid such problems.

Computers can also be protected by installing up-to-date firewall, antivirus and antispyware software.

Hommage á la France Roll back the clock and if history had taken a slightly different path we would all be celebrating Bastille Day tomorrow.

But talk to seasoned French chef Stephen Wilson and he argues more people should be celebrating the region’s connection to France.

“It’s a fabulous culture with great cuisine – they’ve given the world a lot,” says Stephen, who last year returned to Tauranga after 26 years cooking in Paris, including running his own restaurant, Kiwizine.

Stephen is a direct descendant of Emile Joseph Borell who – along with Louis Bidois – settled in Te Puna, from Honfleur, Normandy, in the 1840s. Last year with his brother Tommy ‘Kapai’ Wilson, Stephen helped celebrate Te Puna’s French connection when the Te Puna Rugby Club and Tutereinga Marae entertained French visitors during the Rugby World Cup. For Stephen, who runs French cooking classes

and catering company Kiwizine, the ingredient he misses the most from French living is time spent around the table in robust discussions, with the wine flowing.

While he will be busy chefing tomorrow, his ideal Bastille Day would include playing petanque with friends, drinking pastis, and then enjoying duck confit with champagne.

Stephen is already planning a few French events to mark Bastille Day next year, including a waiters’ race along The Strand. He says those wanting to get into the Bastille spirit on Saturday can enjoy French music and petanque at Nautilus Café.

The Tauranga Petanque Club is holding a special French day on Sunday.

Crusading for sheer love of pies From front cover Pie enthusiast Grant Duffield, who is single-handedly collecting signatures throughout the North Island for a petition to present to McDonalds in an effort to see the return of the ol’ George, wants Georgie Pie fans to know that he cares, and that he is there.

He says someone had to step up on behalf of all Georgie Pie fans.

“I’m doing it for everyone’s sheer love of the pie. I feel it should never have been taken away from us in the first place.

“I know there is a Facebook group with 50,000 members, so there’s lots of support.”

Grant has already collected 2600 signatures in little more than two weeks.

“The overall amount of people turning up for me in support… if I’m not getting signatures, people are driving past tooting out for me in support. It’s been a real success as far as I’m concerned.

“I’m pushing for as many as I can get. If I can get 5000 I’ll be doing alright.”

Grant, who works at Whakatane Pak ‘n’ Save, is personally funding the campaign.

“I made four of these signs up in my spare time, using masking tape. I had to cut out all the lettering and so it was a lot of work and, hopefully, for a success.

“It cost me near $200 to make my signs. For someone who is doing it just on his own back, it’s quite a bit of thought to put into something.”

He is hopeful the petition will put pressure on McDonalds’ brass to bring back the iconic pies and has set up a Facebook page in the hope of drawing attention.

“There is a new CEO of McDonalds.

He was researching the market to see if it was feasible to bring Georgie Pie back... why can’t they just push it through the McCafe side of McDonalds?

“I believe the signatures mean a lot, plus the new CEO will be able to see which particular towns people are from to get a better idea of market research.”

Georgie Pie was created by Tom Ah Chee, with the first store opening in Kelston, West Auckland in 1977.

The franchise’s best years were in the 1990s when it had 1300 staff and $1, $2, $3 and $4 pie specials.

The chain achieved a number of firsts in New Zealand. It had the first drivethru, was the first fast-food franchise to offer breakfast and was the first local concept to challenge international brands.

A McDonald’s NZ spokesperson says the company appreciates Grant’s efforts.

“We are currently looking at our options, as we know that there is a lot of historical love for the brand in NZ. However, our research so far has shown that while there is still huge love for the Georgie Pie brand, there are also challenges with bringing it back.

“These include the fact we know that people’s taste profiles have changed over the past 15 years and also that the $1 pie that Georgie Pie was famous for would now be closer to $3. While we have no short term plans to bring Georgie Pie back, we will continue to look at options and how any use of the brand could connect the love with the challenges.”

Shooting with a fallen star

Years ago, some Native Americans believed their souls would be stolen should their likeness be captured in a photograph.

The Lakes’ Alan Arnold - former photographer to the stars including Sammy Davis Junior, Charlie Pride and the late British comedian Erik Sykes in the late 1970s and early 1980s - subscribes to a similar, if not as demonic, philosophy.

“They were interesting guys to photograph. They all lived out of suitcases, they all wanted to put on a smile and a showbiz look.

But that’s not what I wanted. I wanted to get into their brain and photograph them as I really did see them.

“Hopefully, I’ve portrayed them in the manner in which I found them, whether it was correct or not. I think it was.”

“Being a forensic photographer, of course, you have to get used to lighting very quickly if you’re going to survive in that area.

“Timing is not the problem – it’s about being in the middle of nowhere with no flashlight…you learn to improvise, you learn all about light and what it does.”

A chance friendship with the manager of the then Intercontinental Hotel allowed Alan to photograph the stars who passed through the hotel.

Later, he submitted his work to the Qualifications Board of the then NZ Professional Photographers Association, gaining him the title of an associate photographer.

In that way, the portraits were mutually beneficial.

“It made sense for them to get photographs of all the dignitaries that visited the hotel. The American would come in and say, ‘oh my gosh, if he photographed Sammy

Davis Junior and he stayed here, then it’s good enough for us’.

“If it was someone I didn’t like, I didn’t think I could do a good job, although, if I was getting paid for it, I’d have to do it.”

He encountered the late Erik Sykes in 1981.

“I met him in a park in Parnell he was staying in a hotel or motel up St Stephens Avenue way. We had a bit of a chat and he was expecting me to take his photograph in the park…I said I would photograph him at his hotel.”

Other famous faces Alan has captured include Sir Keith Holyoake, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Precious McKenzie, Miss Universe New Zealand contestant Claire Glenister, John Rowles, Basil Brush, Selwyn Toogood, Sir Peter Marshall, Sir Dove-Myer Robinson, Dave Allen, Dennis Waterman, Derrick Nimmo, Dick Emery, Neil Sadaka, Ravi Shankar and a number of New Zealand notables.

Hard fishing – fish supplies often severely limited Although the weather and sea conditions in the WBOP have been pretty good for the last ten days, and the recreational fishers and boats have been out in fairly big numbers over the weekend, the recreational fishing catch has been fairly light.

Russ Hawkins (Fat Boy) last Sunday at the Mayor Knolls they caught next to nothing.

They tried a number of spots with no luck. In the afternoon they saved the day at the Penguin Shoals, landing some tarakihi and three snapper for the four anglers aboard. It was one of the toughest days.

Brett Keller (Manutere) last Sunday morning around Motiti they were catching fish for only a short time, then nothing. In the last two hours of fishing they struck the fish again, and the anglers ended up with between 8-15 fish each, mainly tarakihi, but with a few snapper.

Garth Le Lievre (Deepstar) Saturday at the Mayor Knolls the puka fishing was slow.

They did land a few gemfish, one good bass, and some snapper. Sunday round Motiti the fishing was good. They landed enough tarakihi and a few snapper.

Biting back IN THE BAY

Small boats had very mixed weekend outings. A considerable number caught nothing or just one or two fish. But probably one of the best small boats’ catches of the weekend was the four angler boat off Motiti Knoll Sunday landing 14 snapper, two blue cod, two grey mao mao, and one trevally.

Kontiki fishers in general have been finding the fishing hard. But at Papamoa last Thursday night one regular kontiki fisher abandoned the recent baits and went back to bonito (Skipjack) and in two sets brought in 14 snapper, whilst our veteran kontiki fisher fishing beside him with his old trevally bait got nothing.

At Pukehina a kontiki fisher Friday morning in two sets got one gurnard.

Alongside Brittany, other inspiring women also focussed outcomes on the needs of future children. In the main, the men did not. In her +20 speech, Severn Suzuki commented on the failed promise of the 1992 Rio summit.

Today, at 32, she has the children for whom she hoped Rio would deliver a better world.

Brittany exited the conference disappointed, as is Severn. We must hope that, at 37, Brittany will be more positive when speaking at Rio+40. But to be brutally honest, her own country is failing her. The fixing must start here, and now.

Time to stand up

The council decision of three wards and eight councillors has split the council and Cr Pittar is looking for support for the smaller towns of Waihi Beach, Katikati, Te Puke and Maketu.

No other councillors have at the moment come forward to explain the representation process in public meetings, but this is understandable. They are busy meeting with each other for an arm wrestle before they make a final decision, which will be notified on December 10.

Any public submissions could be ignored in the process. Even if one ‘community of interest’, like Katikati or Waihi Beach, recognises the power it has been given, any submissions that it might make on its own behalf will be swamped by the councillors’ district-wide battle.

National ShakeOut for Civil Defence At 9.26am on September 26, New Zealand will hold its first nationwide earthquake drill. Called New Zealand ShakeOut, the aim of the exercise is to help people and organisations get better prepared for major earthquakes, and practice how to be protected when they happen. It is hoped to have more than one million participants. To date, more than 250,000 people are registered to participate – including me!

A dedicated website has been set up to help people engage in the exercise and it is well worth visiting www.getthru.govt.nz to register and to access the wealth of information the site has to help you get prepared.

Welcome Bay gunman at large A Welcome Bay gunman who shot a man in the head through a glass door remains at large as police investigate the background of the victim and his associates. A 43-year-old man was shot at twice with a shotgun while in his Meander Drive home at about 9pm on Monday night.

The pellets were left lying around the bed of where the man’s primary aged daughter would normally have been asleep. The girl was not at home at the time. The man was taken to Tauranga Hospital where he was treated and later discharged.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner says at this stage it is too early to speculate on possible motives but the shooting was a targeted attack.

Human error caused TECT botch-up

Human error is being blamed for the TECT election blunder where 10,000 election packs were sent to old or incorrect addresses. An error in setting the parameters in establishing the TECT election voter database resulted in the error, estimated to cost about $80,000.

TrustPower spokesman Graeme Purches says the search parameters used when separating eligible voters from the company’s everyday database had not been broad enough.

“It was just a human error, simple as that. It was for a purpose that we don’t normally use it for.

“It involves going into the system and setting a bunch of parameters. The person who did it didn’t set the parameters correctly and then the thing wasn’t tested.

Robbed tourists continue NZ holiday

The two French tourists robbed and beaten at the back of an old service station on State Highway 2 near Papamoa are continuing their travel plans in New Zealand.

The two men were hitchhiking from Tauranga to Rotorua when they were picked up by two men in a car who drove to the layby near Welcome Bay Road where they stole the tourists’ possessions including money, passports and clothing.

The Frenchmen were also repeatedly punched and left with minor injuries from the assault.

Since the attack at about 4pm on Saturday, July 9 the tourists been inundated with offers of accommodation, food and money from Bay of Plenty residents.

“We are continuing enquiries and we are looking into the background of the victim and associates to see if we can work out to see why he would be targeted in this manner.”

He says police have no immediate suspects at this stage and are continuing to “try and get to the bottom of it”.

“Obviously, we’ve put a lot of effort into neighbours and people in the area at the time, if there is still people out there who haven’t been spoken to by police please make contact.

“Anyone might have heard, traditionally people talked about or skite about offending, so if there is anyone out there who might have heard any rumours or might have any suggestions about who is responsible we are very keen to speak to them.”

Teens drunk in public playground

Police are investigating an incident of a sexual nature involving two drunk teenagers at a Brookfield playground.

Police were called to the reserve off Te Koari Drive at about 2pm on Wednesday following a call from a concerned member of the public.

When police arrived one of the 15-year-old boys was comatose and St John Ambulance paramedics were called, and transported the boy to Tauranga Hospital.

Another 15-year-old boy was taken into police custody.

Inspector Karl Wright St-Clair says police are investigating a report of an incident of a sexual nature between two youths who are known to each other.

Memorial service for former CEO

The public memorial service for former Tauranga City Council chief executive officer Ken Paterson is being held at Baycourt this Friday afternoon.

Ken, aged 61, died in his sleep on June 18. He is survived by his wife Melanie and their children threeyear-old Finley, and seven month old twins Mackenzie and Elliott.

The public service beginning at 3pm will be about 45 minutes and will have a number of speakers including family, tangata whenua and staff representatives and Mayor Stuart Crosby.

There will also be bagpipes to honour Ken’s Scottish heritage.

Gemma Flynn, 22, cannot wait to chase a medal at the London Olympics.

“I’m excited but am not so carried away with the big hype of the Olympics – it’s more about getting the job done this time – focusing on the job at hand.”

Before flying out for a preOlympic tournament in Germany on Monday, Gemma and the three other Beijing veterans discussed their Olympic experiences to help everyone prepare.

Despite her experience, Gemma just sees herself as ‘one of the girls’, saying they all want to help each other do their best.

Gemma got her first taste of hockey playing with a ‘cutdown stick’ as a four-year-old in Tauranga, following her mother into the game.

The naturally-talented athlete combined places in both hockey and soccer 1st IX teams throughout secondary school – but making the national under-16 team saw her focus her attention on hockey.

Since joining the Black Sticks in 2008 Gemma has collected 109 caps and had a series of career highlights.

But Gemma is now completely focused on the big goal of winning an Olympic medal.

“We are sixth in the world. We are an outside chance.

“But in our pool we have beaten everyone before at different stages and I think we are definitely on the right road.”

Looking back she believes her success in the game has been helped with good support from family, friends and coaches, along with her family’s competitive spirit – which saw her regularly battling her brothers and parents in table tennis and backyard soccer.

Gemma, who remembers catching the Olympic dream when she watched the Sydney games, also says players need to have strong drive to make the top.

Her advice to young players is to enjoy the game while putting in extra effort.

“Nothing that is worth fighting for is ever that easy, so you’ve got to do extra work.”

It’s all about chasing hockey’s field of dreams From picking up her first stick as a primary school new entrant, hockey has grown from a Saturday distraction to become a battle for Olympic glory for Sam Charlton.

Growing up in Tauranga Sam, 20, took a liking to the game and her competitive spirit on the field and commitment to training saw her rise through the ranks as a regional agegroup representative player – before being selected for the national under-16 team.

The big jump came in 2010 when,

at 17, she was named a member of the national development squad.

Despite her rapid progress up the ranks, 12 months ago Sam was not expecting to make it to London.

The turning point was in October when she was named as a defender in the Black Sticks Women’s Olympic squad and she has already racked up 26 caps.

Since March the science student has turned her attention from university studies to training full-time with the squad, while her boyfriend Marcus Child has been practicing hard with the men’s squad.

teams last month Sam’s success was tempered by his not being named, but she says he has been great about it.

“It is pretty hard – he was pretty gutted that he didn’t make the team but is all supportive and happy that I made the team.”

Sam’s excitement about competing at the Olympics is obvious.

She bubbled over with enthusiasm only days before flying out on Monday (July 9) as she told The Weekend Sun she could not wait for the first preparation games in a Four Nations clash in Germany against Belgium, South Africa and

“It’s something so exciting to look forward to. I can’t wait.

“It’s going to be pretty much straight into some games, so I’m getting quite excited. Germany is one of top four teams and the others are pretty strong – so it will be good preparation.”

The German competition will be followed by two days training in London, a four-day trip to France – for a ‘friendly game’ and some rest, before returning to London for warm-up games against UK and Belgium.

A deal that makes good sense.

Tauranga Black Sticks player Andy Hayward (rear right) is aiming to win a medal at the London Olympics to show his future grandchildren.

After missing out on selection for the Beijing Olympics, Black Sticks right half Andy Hayward was determined to make it to London.

It fulfils a life-time ambition to compete at sport’s pinnacle, but the focus was not always on hockey.

“When I was a little kid I wanted to be a 100m sprinter at the Olympics. Isn’t that what everyone wants to be? But mid-way through high school I thought that maybe I could give it a good crack with hockey.”

Andy, 27, says his goal moved from the realm of dreams when he was made the national under-18 team as a Tauranga Boys’ College seventh former.

“It was pretty hard to get there, but once you get to that level a lot of it comes down to hard work. If you can work hard and put in the hours of training then you can achieve those dreams.”

In keeping with this, he trains and plays 20-25 hours a week, fitting his commitments around work.

Since April he has taken time off to train full-time with the squad, saying it has been great to have a complete team focus and given him time to do proper recovery work to look after his body.

Since making his international debut in 2007, Andy has collected 131 caps with the Black Sticks, but he says even with the best preparation he was not certain of being named in the team before it was announced in June.

“I thought I had done enough over the last little while. But you are always a bit nervous.”

Andy, who played his first hockey game aged six, believes the team has a good chance of achieving its medal goal.

“I think with the team we’ve got, if we do the best we can, it will be pretty hard to beat us, but we are up against some other pretty sharp teams.”

To have a chance at a medal the team needs to play well against Germany (ranked second) and Netherlands (third) - the two highest rated teams in its draw.

Only the draw’s top two teams advance to the semis.

“I definitely want to come back with a medal. It would be a disappointment to do any less.”

Andy, who is nicknamed Ginga and Grinch for his red hair, says with two weeks of hard training ahead in Belgium the fact the games are fast approaching is still to sink in.

“Also on our mind, we want to make sure that we come back from the games and feel we performed the best no matter where we come. That we did the best we could.”

Back to the future – again Elected members and City Hall have been ticking over the past couple of weeks even though there have been few formal meetings.

Contrary to urban/ media myth formal meetings only form a part of how the city operates.

High on the list of elected members’ priorities is addressing the matter of the chief executive’s position. An extraordinary full council meeting has been called for 9am this Friday. It is a public excluded meeting where the subject matter is ‘chief executive’. I’m unable to disclose the purpose of the meeting other than that information. You can expect a statement from the mayor sometime after this meeting and I may be able to elaborate in next week’s column. What

I can say is that nothing has changed from the October 2010 election where elected members were united in their determination to review the entire operation of council.

There was an eight month gap from the election to when the late Ken Paterson started.

Naturally it took some further time for Ken to come to grips with what needed to be done, how and when. So now council is some 20 months into its term and we are determined to continue without delay the review process that has started.

The economic downturn has continued, unfortunately, and there has been concern that a review and possible downsize may have been premature.

That was never my view, along with other elected members, and, as in the private sector, it is prudent to react quickly and roll with the punches as events unfold. As has been noted previously, the Local Government Act and local government culture ensures very little happens quickly. Hopefully we are breaking this mould.

We had a workshop on the future of Smartgrowth – no media showed up – and some interesting titbits fell out of it. Only David Stewart is pushing hard for amalgamation of the three councils – TCC, Western Bay District and BOP Regional Council. Whilst it’s true that much of Smartgrowth’s purpose has diminished with the economic downturn, the discussion turned to the benefits of using the Smartgrowth structure as an alternative process to council amalgamation.

Super city? Not always

Auckland Super City is producing as many or more problems than it was supposed to solve, at colossal extra expense. Some 3600 computers that can’t talk to each other is one reported issue that could cost around $600 million to fix. Smartgrowth means that

all three councils sit in the same room and talk to each other and have done for the past nine years or so.

Apparently this is somewhat unique around the country.

In addition we initiated BOPLASS – Bay of Plenty Local Authority Shared Services – where we united with eight surrounding councils for group buying of goods and services for bulk discounts.

Stationery, insurances, etc and this has been very successful. So the next obvious progression is provision of centralised services. For instance, if there was amalgamation, there would only be need for one pay system. But you don’t need to amalgamate to do this.

Amalgamation is not the panacea to local government inflexibility, slowness and inconsistency that some think it would be.

For example, in the 1989 amalgamation of Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Papamoa, the clear winner was Papamoa. The then Tauranga County Council had allowed rampant development without appropriate infrastructure so Tauranga and Mount ratepayers funded the significant infrastructure required. But this meant infrastructure in other parts of the city was delayed.

More submissions to Central Government – this time to a “Productivity Commission.” We decided we needed to participate in this if, for no other reason, we couldn’t criticise any negative outcomes if we didn’t contribute. In short it’s Government’s response to cutting red tape, making progress more flexible and empowering people. Creating an environment of ‘if it’s not specifically legislated for then its permitted’. I’ll believe it when I see it. This Government promised to unroll the complexities of the Resource Management Act four years ago. My case rests!

One hundred days of design Tauranga illustrator/graphic designer, Alice Berry is flying solo in a freelance adventure taking part in a 100 days of design project.

The principle of the project is simple: for 100 days the Otago Polytechnic design graduate must repeat a design process of her choosing.

The design must be repeated in some form every day, with each illustration documented for presentation.

Alice has chosen to title her project ‘In Your Cats Dreams’, illustrating a New Zealand bird every day for 100 days.

The 23-year-old is nearly three quarters of her way into the project and says the biggest challenge is time.

“It’s a timing thing. It usually takes me about one to two hours, sometimes longer,” says Alice.

She chose the New Zealand bird theme because of the different personalities that each bird can represent.

“There is something a bit cheeky about them.”

By choosing the NZ birds theme, Alice hopes to create awareness of how many of the native birds are threatened, endangered or on the brink of extinction.

Alice plans to release a few of her designs available in print after completing the project.

Tauranga launches interpretive service The meaning of unfamiliar languages will become clear with the launch of Tauranga Regional Multicultural Council’s 24/7 interpretive service.

Approximately 20 qualified freelance interpreters will provide interpretive services for the community, including court, police, and hospital situations where the understanding of languages is a necessity.

The council is managed by a committed group of volunteers who have a desire to promote and protect the interest of ethnic groups that make up New Zealand’s multicultural society.

Any ethnic group, society, organisation or individual is welcome to become a member of TRMC. The council has introduced approximately 70 migrant communities living locally to the wider community.

TRMC hosts activities during the year including the annual Tauranga Regional Ethnic Festival.

Paddler on course for Olympics The experience of the 2008 Beijing Olympics is what female New Zealand canoe slalom athlete Luuka Jones has over some of her competition when she heads to the London Olympic Games next month.

River in New Zealand and during the New Zealand winter trains and competes in regattas in Europe.

The 24-year-old has based herself in Nottingham, England since she left secondary school and trained with Great Britain’s slalom athletes.

The Tauranga-born athlete has a number of achievements, including being a fourtime New Zealand national champion and New Zealand’s number one ranked K1 female.

Although Luuka isn’t expected by many to gain a medal place, she is confident she’ll throw in a surprise come race day.

Following a triumphant PowerStation show in May, Heavy Metal Ninjas are returning to the live fray will a full New Zealand tour in August.

Licensed building practitioner liabilities The advent of the Licensed Building Practitioner scheme has many building practitioners questioning themselves what additional liabilities the new scheme now imposes on them.

Litigation brought about by the leaky building syndrome has publically presented the risks and obligations of those involved with design and build.

This has been a difficult pill for the residential industry to swallow, however it has highlighted the risky environment many practitioners were unaware they were, and still are, working within.

Group busting established myths about ghosts Tauranga is a hot spot for paranormal activity according to ghost whisperer Bernetta Rainey and her Paranormal Investigation Group.

Since placing a small run-on classified advert in The Weekend Sun offering help with things going bump in the night, she has received half a dozen phone calls about haunted homes, businesses and buildings and accepted one assignment to help a terrorised Tauranga couple.

Bernetta says spirits are not normally dangerous, although in rare instances furniture can be flung around the home.

“We don’t charge for our service. We just want to help people who may not know where to turn and want to talk to someone who will take them seriously,” says Bernetta.

Because Bernetta and her team do not charge for their help, and hold regular jobs, they are only available on Sundays between 7 and 9pm, but demand for their time is high.

“Often paranormal activity is noticed after a family member dies, or some-

times spirits can be invited into the home through dangerous activities like playing with Ouija Boards, or experimental séances. If you let them in, they will hang around,” says Bernetta.

“Nine out of ten times there will be children in the home, as kids are more sensitive to paranormal activity, at least until adolescence.”

“If someone has taken their own life or died under traumatic circumstances such as murder, they may have trouble moving on.”

Evidence of spirits includes orbs of light, strange noises, furniture moving and cold or hot spots, shoulder taps or glimpses of paranormal activities out of the corner of your eye.

Invisible volunteers an unknown commodity The city’s volunteers are the invisible workers who, by helping out around the city, do work that saves hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In order to work out just what volunteers are worth and what they can do, Tauranga City Council is calling for a report on a volunteers policy.

At present volunteers do a lot of invisible work in and about the city for a number of different city council departments, none of which have a consistent volunteer policy.

The options and ways forward were explored in a workshop following the strategy and policy committee meeting on Tuesday. The city council is looking for a way of better organising a free resource through the

efforts of people freely giving their time to look after parks, gardens, and even the city’s museum collection.

Volunteers look after the city’s museum collection twice a week. They work 1840 volunteer hours a year keeping the collection from decay – which if they were paid $20 an hour would cost ratepayers $36,800.

McLaren Falls Park benefits from the input of 14,000 volunteer hours each year, valued at $280,000 if the city paid $20 an hour for the labour.

But the council has no knowledge of volunteers’ overall worth to the council, the amount of staff time and resources involved in organising them, and there is no reward policy for thanking volunteers for their work.

“We could do so much more than what we are already doing, it’s just a matter of tapping into the community need to do things,” says strategic planner Cheryl Steiner.

“Sometimes all the policy we need is to say, ‘yes’,” says councillor Bill Faulkner.

Staff are expected to report back to the council in a couple of months.

Hammer time First home buyers flood housing market Grant Child is under the pump.

A total of 48 properties will pass under the Eves auctioneer’s hammer on Tuesday, July 17, in the largest single day auction sale he can remember in 17 years in the industry.

“It’s the highest number that we’ve done since I can recall,” says Grant.

“It’s certainly the most I’ve ever done in a day.”

He puts the surge in interest down to favourable, stable interest rates and increased confidence on the back of a nationwide economic recovery that has seen many people attempt to get off the ‘rental treadmill’.

“It’s an ideal opportunity for first home buyers at this point in time because, in some cases, for just a few more dollars a week or the same amount of rent they are paying, they could actually be paying a mortgage with the interest rates the way they are.

“There are also some very, very motivated vendors out there who have been on the market for some time and are keen to see some offers on their properties.”

Grant also puts a lot of the interest down to free seminars run by the real estate company that have proven wildly popular.

“We had over 30 people at the first home buyers’ seminar last Wednesday, and then we had another 30-odd on Thursday night at the first home investors’ seminar.

“They were very well received on both counts.”

The national median house price went up $5000, or 4.2 per cent, since March last year.

Grant says low interest rates have opened a window for first home buyers that will close when investors begin flowing back into the market.

“The right time to buy a property is now, without a doubt.

“If the first home buyers don’t act reasonably soon then we are absolutely confident that the investors will be back in the marketplace and then the first home buyers would then have to compete with the investors.

“As sure as day follows night and night follows day, when the market has taken a dive, when it recovers it starts going back again. And we’re not in a dive, that’s for sure.”

Talk of “fair market value” is misleading and is often derived from people’s expectations rather than numbers and fact.

What are the residential landlord’s rights?

These are some of the rights Owners have as outlined by The Residential Tenancies Act 1986 which was revised in 2010.

Clause 48: Landlords right of entry - If an Owner or their Agent needs to inspect the property they must give the Tenant written notice not less than 48 hours nor more than 14 days before the intended entry and not more frequently than once in any period

of four weeks. The Owner or their Agent only has to give 24 hours notice of a visit to carry out necessary repairs or maintenance.

The Tenant cannot withhold consent unreasonably and may make the consent subject to any reasonable conditions.

Clause 24: Rent Increases – An Owner or their Agent must give the Tenant 60 days notice in writing of a rent increase and the rent shall not be increased within 180 days after the date on which the last increase took effect.

Winter’s harvest

Winter is a good time to do some baking and often we tend to eat all manner of steamed puddings and crumbles.

Seasonal winter vegetables provide us with great bases for soups and casseroles and pumpkin also makes a great dessert. This week’s recipe is a well known American favourite: pumpkin pie.

The custard-like, spice scented pie is traditionally served as part of Thanksgiving celebrations, also marking the end of a successful harvest.

In the States pumpkin pie is like our pavlova, with slightly different versions in different states and basically you can buy the pumpkin mix already in the can with all the spices.

The butternut variety suits this recipe as I found it slightly sweeter. Most recipes I found mention using canned pumpkin, but it is not difficult to purée your own.

Pumpkin pie Pastry

Ingredients 1 & 1/2 cups white flour ½ cup wholemeal flour 1tablespoon brown sugar ½ teaspoon of salt ½ cup butter Iced water

Method In a food processor mix all the ingredients and then gradually add the ice water until the mixture clings together. Wrap in clingfilm and chill while you prepare the filling.

Pie filling

Ingredients 3 eggs 2 cups of cooked pumpkin, mashed ¾ cup of honey ½ teaspoon sea salt

Method Place all ingredients in a blender and mix until smooth then pour into prepared pie shell.

The dough can be rolled out on baking paper then placed in a 8-10 inch pie or flan tin. Don’t worry if it breaks, as it can easily be repaired once in the tin. I usually find it not always necessary

1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground ginger Pinch of ground cloves 1 cup of evaporated milk to pre-bake the crust as some recipes state.

Bake pie at 200 degrees Celsius for 15 minutes then reduce the heat to 180 degrees Celsius and bake for 45 minutes or until pie has set. Serve with whipped cream sweetened with a little honey and enjoy winter’s harvest.

Sunshine irrelevant in perfect pizza preparation How can one resist pizza? I just love it and have found a way to make it all year round without the sun to make the dough rise!

What I do is turn my oven up to the highest temperature it can go then open the oven door and place the dish on top of the oven lid with a tea towel on top. The dough will start to rise – it’s easy! This recipe will make 2-3 large family pizzas.

In a large dish, place warm water, yeast and sugar. Allow to sit so the yeast forms a foam on top. Place all dry ingredients in a dish and mix through the yeast with a wooden spoon. Turn out on a flowered bench top and knead the dough into a ball.

Place back in the dish and rub the oil over the top. Place in a warm area to allow the dough to rise.

In winter I put my oven on full and open the lid and place the pizza dough on top of the oven lid with the door open this will help the dough to rise.

If using a pizza stone, heat in the oven for 30 minutes until it is on the highest temp. Remove from oven and place all toppings, then place back in the oven and lower heat to 180 degrees Celsius. Cook until golden.

If using pizza trays, oil your surface and place in the oven on 180 degrees Celsius.

Bay volleyball girls take on the US Three Tauranga volleyball players will get the opportunity to test their skills against some of the best college students in the world after being given scholarships to play volleyball in the USA. Alyse Barclay, Melissa Cairns and Andrea Tauai, formerly of Otumoetai College and Tauranga Girls’ College, have been working toward breaking into the American volleyball college leagues.

The three 18-year-olds represented the New Zealand U19 Junior Women’s team in 2011 and Alyse was named in the New Zealand women’s national side last month.

Andrea and Melissa say the standard in America is a step up from New Zealand volleyball.

“While playing in the high performance in America, I found they play a lot faster, with more movement. New Zealand volleyballers are slower on their feet whereas Americans are always moving,” says Melissa.

French flavour for weekend’s Bastille ‘bowls’ Berets, baguettes and stripy shirts are expected to be the flavour of the day at Tauranga Petanque Club’s Bastille Day event on Sunday.

Club captain John Hudson is encouraging anyone interested to join in the social competition, at the club’s Cliff Rd court.

“Bastille Day is a great opportunity for some fun. We’re all getting dressed up and into the spirit of it.”

John, who says he is ‘going to town’ dressing as René Artois from ‘Allo Allo’, says along with some social games there will be a light snack including French Onion soup and baguettes.

Help provide hearing dogs A charitable trust that specialises in changing the lives of deaf people and saving the lives of dogs is appealing for donations.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People New Zealand operates nationwide, providing deaf and hearing impaired people with a dog trained to assist them in everyday life.

The dogs are specially trained to listen for everyday sounds – including smoke/ fire alarms, door bells, telephones or

vocal-specific sounds. They paw the person when a sound occurs and show them where it is coming from.

Hearing dogs come in all shapes and sizes, almost every breed and crossbreed and are gifted to the owner free of charge.

Most of the dogs are rescued from animal centres as puppies or young dogs.

The charity receives no government funding and runs solely on donations.

Health shuttle not ready yet A much-anticipated health shuttle service for Tauranga is remaining stationary until next month.

The New Zealand Red Cross Transport Service will be launched on August 8, with the service proposed to be available from August 13.

With the launch of the shuttle service, Tauranga residents can be driven to any health-related appointments within the Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Papamoa boundary.

Red Cross service centre co-ordinator Jan Pryce says the service will aim to provide a solution for people who have no other means of attending health-related appointments.

“We’re doing it because there is a need in the community, ideally to complement other services that are already operating,” says Jan. Jan says her organisation has already received calls requesting the service, but wanted to stress that it would not begin until next month.

Can good nutrition reduce blood pressure?

Hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke and heart disease as well as chronic kidney failure.

Research has found that a number of lifestyle adjustments such as ceasing smoking, limiting alcohol, increasing physical activity (under professional guidance) and improving nutrition can help reduce and manage blood pressure.

Sodium is a major contributor to high blood pressure. Sodium is hidden in many processed foods and you may not be aware you are consuming way in excess of the maximum recommended dietary intake, which is 920mg/day for an adult. When purchasing tinned, bottled or packaged food, it pays to check the label for how much

sodium is in the food. To find the best product, you can compare the sodium per 100g, but more importantly you need to know how much sodium there is in a serving, as it is easy to exceed the upper daily limit (2300 mg/day).

Processed meats such as ham, bacon and sausages are high in sodium.

Two rashers of bacon can have between 1050mg and 1300mg of sodium, which immediately puts you over the recommended daily intake.

Eating more healthily by cutting back on takeaways, sugary foods and drinks, and packaged highly processed foods, and by increasing your whole foods such as wholegrains, vegetables and fruit immediately increases your nutrient intake and reduces the food types that damage your health and increase blood pressure.

If you have every eaten a meal containing monosodium glutamate and found your heart pounding, you will understand how bad this additive is to your health.

Researchers have found, through a number of trials, that a balanced diet that includes the correct range of vitamins, minerals, good fats and fibre has positive influence on reducing high blood pressure, reducing both systolic and diastolic pressures. If you are under medication for hypertension or kidney malfunction, please seek your doctor’s advice before taking supplements or making large changes to your diet.

Simple weight loss no tough cookie When Chris started at Healthy Inspirations on March 20, 2009 she weighed 93.3 kilograms.

Shaping children into becoming complete adults is no mean feat.

Parents are given no formal education or training and do their best, often with added pressures brought about by personal and financial circumstances. The Government has recognised the need for help with the education of preschoolers with the 20 ECE hours and up to 30 hours per week of subsidised childcare.

A simple yet effective strategy to assist with children’s upbringing is to keep clearly in our minds the philosopy ‘We are what we practice’. We are more likely to have happy, confident children if we fill them with contentment and thankfulness rather than fear and anger.

This strategy of positive reinforcement takes time and patience. Rather than punishing children for every misdemeanour, how about big praises for any little good thing and a little reprimand, or better still an explanation, for the big bad things. If we continue to do this regularly, over a period of time, children

want to do the nice things to feel good about themselves. In this way we build happy, confident children who are a pleasure to be around.

Isn’t it so much better when we ‘feel’ good about ourselves today, rather than promising ourselves things will be better some time in the future, as is often the case. Children live for today yet grow into adults who live for tomorrow. Children are taught to save for tomorrow for fear of being poor, avoid risks for fear of getting hurt, keep clean - initially not for fear of getting dirty but for fear of reprimand from an angry parent. Small wonder the spontaneity, creative and impulsive actions children once enjoyed with contentment and confidence are eroded and replaced with fear. With the fear comes stress and with stress comes illness.

Let’s start today to break the cycle. Practice makes perfect – with constant positive thoughts and actions, you will feel better about yourself and so will your children.

Distribution graduate thriving in new job Les Kiriona is an inspiration to anyone considering a career in the warehousing and distribution industry.

A recent graduate from Bay of Plenty Polytechnic’s distribution programme, Les is thriving in his new career as a warehouse operator in Tauranga with the nation-wide port logistics company, C3 Limited.

After 25 years working as a labourer and tree feller, 53-year-old Les was looking for a career change. He enrolled in the National Distribution Level 2 programme in 2011 and has never looked back.

“At C3 my office is my forklift and I love my job, I couldn’t handle being stuck in an ordinary office all day long.

“I’m an outdoors bloke and my job includes unloading and loading steel products into our factory warehouse and onto wagon containers to be exported overseas.”

C3 steel warehouse manager Mike Bulloch says the polytechnic qualification definitely helped Les get the job.

“I knew he was serious about working in this industry and he would become useful immediately to our organisation.”

Training at the polytechnic’s 3000 square metre, fully operational Road Transport, Warehousing and Logistics Training Centre in Tauranga, students like Les experience the real-life pressures they’ll find in the workforce.

Warehousing and distribution training options include the National Certificate in Distribution Level 2 – a 12-week, entry-level certificate into the industry which teaches students practical skills including forklift licensing and correct safety procedures.

Tell council where to go Western Bay of Plenty District Council representation proposal which is open for submission is their interpretation of the changes they have to make before the 2013 elections. We can tell them where to go like this only once every six years.

They are suggesting an eastern, central and western ward system, with only eight instead of 12 councillors. This would leave only two councillors for Matakana, Waihi Beach and Katikati and as Matakana is entitled to one councillor because it is an island, the proposal does not seem to meet the requirements of Fair Representation.

I personally would favour a more even distribution of councillors based on ‘communities of interest’ for representation which is the major change in the new legislation for the Government that is trying to give more power to communities and simplify local government processes.

It’s all very well saying that community boards should do the work but even community boards have to be paid.

It would seem fair to reduce the number of councillors to six and give responsibility to the community chairs who should then be expected to attend and vote at Council meetings.

A rough calculation indicates that the money saved with the reduction in councillors could be spread around the Board chairs and the total cost could be no more than it is now. With Tauranga and Thames Coromandel already under way with new structures, saving and efficiencies, council needs your ideas even if they might not want them These are just my thoughts. I like the self condemning letter from KR Roke (Weekend Sun 6 July 2012) because he misses and missed the facts of life concerned the Treaty settlement payouts.

If your parents bought property and then passed away, you would claim those properties as your own.

The Government of New Zealand according to Mr Roke was a responsible Government in 1856. According to my history studies the “Maori Wars” did not end until 1867, and in 1864 (according to the Bay Times) it is an historical fact that quote “More than 2,500 men from the Australian colonies cross the Tasman to fight in the New Zealand wars.” Therefore according to logic the New Zealand Government invited foreign troops from Australia on top of the mercenaries (Von Temski) to fight the Maori.

Also according to history the Waikato tribes had been watching Dick Barrett,

a pub owner and gun runner, paying for flax from the Taranaki tribes by guns – the Waikato tribes did not sign the Treaty and the British (with the condolence of the NZ Government) fought the Maoris and confiscated their land. This was born out by the Treaty Settlement of the Tauranga tribes. This was for $38 million plus 51 properties, in payment for the confiscation of over 22,000 acres of land.

We must remember that we are the product of our history and we should be proud of it.

by Alan Lambourne and you will see that as a result of a week-long party staged by Hobson to keep the French warship at bay and the sub sequential race between Branberry’s ship and that warship the French settlers in Akaroa became New Zealand citizens.

Settlements’ value ‘grossly understated’ Fisheries resources given to Maori are self replenishing, require no maintenance, no capital input, minimal administration and earn $10s of millions per year through licensing fees.

The largest expense, policing, is met by the remainder of the population through the Navy and MAF. In business terms an eternal, unassailable cash cow providing income of such magnitude is virtually priceless but certainly worth at least a $Billion. Governments, Maori and people like Peter Dey grossly understate the value of such ‘settlements’ to deflect concern about the value of resources given to special interest groups.

In 2008 The Labour Government gifted the Kaingaroa Forest, then worth an estimated $500Million to the Te

Arawa tribe. This ‘settlement’ alone is more than 3 times the $160 million Dey claims as the total forestry gifted to Maori nationwide, yet is only one of many forestry assets lost to the general populace through ‘settlements’.

While Dey clings to the $1billion fairytale, Tauranga councillor Bill Faulkner wrote in the same paper of attending the latest BOP ‘Settlement’ ceremony where it was revealed that the costs of settling just the current Western BOP claims is expected to total around $500 Million and that local Maori view this as just the start of an endless process of transferring universally owned BOP assets to their exclusive control.

As we now know, this failed, due to the lack of numbers and once again revealing the sickening apathy that pervades our society, thus giving succor to those who must be delighted, not to say, encouraged, to further their quest

for “What their rights are”.

Who are these candidates anyway? Impact fee reductions a ‘real chuckle’ I agree with Rogers when he says it’s ‘odd that so many entrust so much with people they hardly know’. In my case ‘don’t know at all’. I’ve received a Voting Paper with 23 names, I’m being asked to vote for 3 names (people).

Not one of these people have ever come to my door for a chat or communicated with me in any way, they are complete strangers and could be from another planet for all I know.

How would I know what they are like, how they think, their Political/Religious beliefs etc etc. I haven’t a clue in the world. I believe that before you cast

any vote for anything you need to know that person and check him/her out thoroughly. They need to be scrutinised and answer any questions you have. They’re the ones who are asking for your vote and need to present themselves to you.

Otherwise you run the risk of some idiot being voted in at your expense, and getting his/her nose in the trough.

Over the years I’ve seen it happen many times. So, as it’s mid-winter & I’m always looking for paper to get the fire started, that’s where this paper is headed.

Self-interest surfaces in TECT elections Well done in your synopsis on the TECT Elections. While I probably wouldn’t necessarily endorse your preferred selections, it is true to say we do need business savvy people but that must be coupled with openness, accountability and financial prudence.

Incidentally, deserving community groups don’t in my book include the ongoing Tauranga City Council wishlists.

It’s funny how the thought of spending other people’s money on your pet projects draws the punters out of the woodwork at every TECT Trustee Election. People with a list of appointments on various organisations as long as your arm, some with personal aspirations for specific sectors of our society, along with

failed past council big spenders and even others with hairy tales.

Self-interest and conflicts of interest are sure to surface and it seems a couple of existing trustees are past the use by date too. Accountabill is not a word that springs to mind but if it gets as bad as some think it might do, then at least one can opt out as a TECT consumer and stop contributing to the slush fund.

The amount of self-promotion in several candidates’ letters to the editor is something to behold and quite character-revealing. Rarely, apart from the odd one or two candidates, do you see any evidence of community interest or spirit or calls for prudent spending by TECT. Enjoy the outcome of this bunfight, folks.

It’s important to look at all types of evidence Replying to Peter Dey (Weekend Sun 29 June). Carbon dating is still not solid evidence that Maori were the first settlers in NZ as there have been many mistakes made with this method in the past. Is Peter Dey now saying that the accounts by Maori elders to Europeans, from various parts of NZ and from the late 1700s onwards, of a race of people inhabiting NZ when Maori arrived, fairy tales or lies? These accounts cannot be discounted as there are far too many of them in the National Archives.

The Julius von Haast find in 1871 was

not just found buried under 6 metres of soil. The adze was found under 6 metres of soil directly under the roots of a giant tree estimated to be 1000 to 1500 years old, after the tree had been felled.

Did an earthquake or heavy rainfall move the tree over the adze or the adze under the tree? The carbon dating of the adze as Peter Dey states “may have been less than 400 years old”. May have been!

That is not very positive. In that case it may also have been over 1000 years old.

I must say I had a real chuckle when I read the 6th July Sun and Mayor Stuart Crosby crowing about all the good work that has been achieved in the reduction of development/building impact fees and housing permit costs through the council and planning process.

It was his council’s actions some three to four years ago who through thinking developers and house builders were making fortunes from the process of site development and onto the building activities made 30-50% increase in charges overnight. I wonder if those same persons who are sitting

in their nice cosy offices downtown Tauranga and dreamed up the concept of “milking” the above people and companies for maximum gain are going to take pay cuts to sit parallel to the reduced income going into council coffers?

Most of those, if not all of those, council staff do not know what it is like to be in the real world - they have either never been there or if they have failed to make a “go” of it. But they think they can “milk” the real people out there by increasing unjustifiable charges to keep their jobs secure.

How wrong they were.

Sorry Mayor Crosby - it should be an apology from you to those you have unjustifiably ripped of over the last three years through those outrageous increase charges get productivity going within your office - get the work rate up, show some business acumen and create an office that I want to come back and do business with again.

When the truth be known three years ago Mr Nice Guy (that’s you) got it wrong and now that same Mr Nice Guy wants all the credit to “right a wrong”.

Another nice week of winter weather; a couple of unsettled days but overall clear and not too windy. We had a trip Friday that was a bit breezy in the morning, started inside Motiti around the Middle Ground, but had absolutely no joy there so carried onto the area outside where the S.E. was stiff enough for me to postpone the overnighter for Friday /Saturday.

A few hours later it was looking a lot better. The wind had died off and we ended up with a nice day and quite good fishing. One of those situations where better to cancel than go out and end in an endurance test. Not much fun. Sunday we just went straight outside Motiti and had a continuation of cross currents and slower fishing once again. Again we did find fish eventually but it has been getting a bit harder. Time to try somewhere different, I think.

A little fame goes a long way Stories with famous people in them are always more interesting.

I thought that when I discovered that this week is the 50th anniversary of The Rolling Stones’ first gig.

Leaving aside the shock that it’s half a century ago, just think of the dinner party story you’d have for the rest of your life if you’d been there.

On the other hand, there were probably a whole pile of 18-year-old musicians you could have watched in London that night. If you’d been at any of those other gigs – no story.

I knew a guy who, a few years back, used to play the odd gig with Bruno Lawrence drumming. I ran into him one day and he told me all about the show they’d done the previous week. Seems Bruno got a bit trashed later and, after some hi-jinks in a taxi, they all ended up at this guy’s place where Bruno proceeded to throw up on the carpet and immediately fall asleep.

We laughed a lot. But it occurs to me that had the central character of the story not been Bruno Lawrence, or someone of similar celebrity status, the story would simply have been: “Some guy got drunk and ruined my rug.”

A friend of mine once had a gig opening for Bob Dylan, at the time when Dylan was touring with Patti Smith as his support act. There was a Kiwi act at each concert and he played for Dylan’s show in Christchurch. We were all a bit blown away by this and the following time I saw him, I quizzed him extensively.

It was a different story altogether with Dylan, of course.

Before Dylan arrived at the venue for his soundcheck, they were given strict instructions: “If you run into Bob in the corridor, don’t talk to him. Don’t even look at him. Just stand back against the wall and wait for him to pass.”

What would you say?

Fair enough, I guess. Even so, my mate says, he had that little internal conversation that inevitably takes place in the nearpresence of greatness, wondering what he’d actually say to Dylan should the moment unexpectedly arise.

I think most of us have done that at one time or another: day-dreamed that perfect line that would somehow elevate us from amongst the crowd of ten thousand other anonymous faces that the famous person in question no doubt meets every week, those vital words that would make them think: “Ah, here’s a good guy, I like him, let’s hang out a bit.”

And, as it happens, that exact opportunity arose for my friend. There he was, between soundchecks, standing backstage in the corridor, and who should come walking along the self-same corridor but Bob Dylan himself, flanked, as usual, by discreetly chunky minders.

There was nothing to do but follow previous directions. My friend duly stood back against the wall and avoided eye contact, trying not to stare. (Exactly how do you not stare when Bob Dylan is almost within touching distance?)

It’s the encounter that counts

But then, to his surprise, he saw that Dylan was actually heading towards him, coming directly at him in fact and about to make contact: was this the moment, the time to unleash that line that would unite them as friends forever?

Dylan did indeed stop right in front of him.

“Have you seen Patti?” said Bob. “Yes, she’s just over there,” said my friend.

And so she was, standing on the other side of the corridor about six feet away.

“Thanks,” said Bob, and went to talk to Patti.

So now my friend has a story about Bob Dylan that he can tell for the rest of his life. How he talked to Bob Dylan. And everyone always asks: “What did you say?”

And he always tells them: “Yes, she’s over there.”

It may not be the most interesting conversation but it’s got a famous person in it. Two, in fact. Stories with famous people in them are always more interesting.

Dir: Pedro Almodovar - Starring: Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Marisa Paredes This year’s BAFTA for Best Foreign Language Film went to the latest from Spain’s premier director, a strange and twisted tale that is unlike anything else out there, combining and skipping across genres with manifold skill, and slowly revealing a story filled with suppressed horror and perversity.

Banderas, who starred in Almodovar’s early films before finding stardom in America, returns to the fold as a crazy, widowed Frankenstein doctor, testing skin grafts on a suicidal patient whom he constantly watches on CCTV. It’s a tightly-wound performance, unsettling and cleverly playing against Banderas’ natural charm.

Anaya, as the captive woman, is superb, haunting and ambiguous in the central role and subtly changing as more details of the complex twisted story emerge.

But there’s also the housekeeper and her brutish son (who turns up dressed as a tiger) and the real skill of the tale comes in the slow reveal, a brilliant unfolding that recasts early events in a new light.

If this sounds mysterious then that’s because it’s an unusual film, assembled with a precision that mirrors the coldness in Banderas’ eyes, seething with strange passions and designed with Almodovar’s usual fantastic eye for design and detail.

I just don’t get Project X . It has, since release, become something of an internet sensation, being downloaded illegally by – apparently – just about every youth on the planet. They are, after all, the target market. Here’s the story: some fairly obnoxious teens decide to have a huge party; it gets out of control and the neighbourhood gets trashed. That’s it. No noticeable character development, not even any tentative love stories of the American Pie variety. Just a massive destructive party. Eventually a guy arrives with a flamethrower and starts setting fire to the street – awesome dude!

After directing the Charlie’s Angels films and the fourth (disappointing) Terminator flick, one doesn’t expect much from the unusually named McG. But This Means War disappoints even those modest expectations by plumbing depths of predictability and stupidity that will leave all but the most undemanding viewers exasperated. This is action rom-com territory where two spies – Chris Pine, Tom Hardy – fall for the same girl (Reese Witherspoon) and go to absurd lengths to compete for her. It’s big and dumb and not nearly as much fun as it should be despite the enjoyable leads (who all seem to be having a better time than the audience).

And, in the world of sci-fi, everyone seems to be going to Mars. Or Barsoom, as it is called – for no particular reason – in John Carter . This got a sound thrashing at the cinema. It lost a bucketful of money and had people says things like “Worst film eva!”. It’s not. It’s actually pretty good, if slightly old-fashioned in feel. A disciple & a disciple-maker Workshop teaches net safety for parents In Matthew 28:18-20 Jesus declares “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

In giving us this Great Commission, Jesus commands those who are true disciples, to go into all the earth with the clearly defined purpose of making disciples. As disciples, we are to be disciple-makers. We are not called to get people to “accept Jesus” or to “make a decision for Jesus”, which is how the gospel is often presented today, even though those terms and the message contained in those terms is unbiblical.

Instead, Jesus says “make disciples”.

So, what is a disciple, according to Scripture? A clear definition is that a disciple of Christ is someone who has been born again by the Spirit of God, through repentance for the forgiveness of sins and through faith in Christ, and who then lives as a wholehearted follower of Christ.

There is much in that definition but to be a disciple and a disciple-maker, we must understand that the gospel message is a message of repentance. Any so-called gospel message without repent-

ance, is not the gospel of the Bible, it is another gospel. Jesus says in Luke 24:46-47, “Thus it is written that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance [with a view to and as the condition of ] forgiveness of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.” (Amplified Bible).

On the Day of Pentecost when the crowd cried out “what must we do to be saved?”, Peter replied in Acts 2:38, “Repent and be baptised every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.” He says further in Acts 3:19, “Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out.”

Paul says in Acts 17:30, ‘the times of ignorance God overlooked, but now He commands all people everywhere to repent” and in Acts 26:20 that we “should repent and turn to God, performing deeds in keeping with their repentance.” Genuine repentance is essential for the forgiveness of sins and forgiveness of sins is essential for salvation. To be a disciple we need to have come to Christ through repentance and to be a disciple-maker, we need to present the gospel that Jesus commissioned us to present, which is a gospel of repentance for the forgiveness of sin.

To be a disciple, we need to be wholehearted followers. To be disciple-makers, through the message of repentance, we need to teach and train others to be wholehearted followers.

Young singers chase Papamoa stardom Papamoa has been in the grip of Idol fever, with almost 70 aspiring young singers hoping to take their first step to musical stardom during the school holidays.

Among those performing on stage at Palm Beach Plaza during the past two weeks have been Elijah Tane, 15, of Papamoa and Samantha Whallers, 12, of Katikati, who are both dreaming of a musical career.

Samantha says she has enjoyed the Palm Beach Idol competition and was hoping to make it to the final on Sunday.

“I really love trying to make people forget things for a short while, to be taken away by the singing.”

Elijah, who has been singing and playing guitar for the past four years, says the talent quest was an opportunity to for him to follow in the footsteps of his musical father, Danny Tewhaiti, who died.

“He was a great singer and good on the guitar. Everybody loved his music.” Palm Beach Plaza spokesman Warwick Clark says he was surprised with the interest in the competition, with crowds of up to 1500 watching the heats.

“The singers have been of a surprisingly good standard. Everybody’s really loved it.”

The top five performers in three age groups will compete for glory in the grand finals on Sunday from 1pm.

Uncle is recovering from having his wings clipped and in a sporting sense, unless they make swimming pools round, he has no chance of competing in any Olympic event (unless of course he makes a visit to Iceland) and gets a bionic oar made.

Which brings us to the conundrum of a certain South African athlete. The Olympic Federation has been for years trying to make the playing field level by catching the drug cheats. Then along comes someone who, defying all adversity, uses science to compete, which all of a sudden makes the field not so level again, so we think the boss should get a bionic oar and start training.

Our cricket boys have to compete against not only a Gayle, but a force 10 hurricane.

We do not know if a new sort of gunja has been introduced into the West Indian dressing room, but our boys are certainly making a hash of the tour so far.

Onto the ‘Money Bill’ Williams saga. Flo and I are scratching ourselves in disbelief.

On one hand he says he is honouring a handshake agreement made a few years ago, when we say, do you remember the ‘doggies’? Has this boy got no style? Talented for sure, but as has been said on many an occasion, there is no I in team, so sayonara ‘Money Bill’, and if you still yen for a little challenge, try your boxing abilities against Manny Pacquiao.

Staying with rugby, is Dave Rennie the next AB’s coach or what? We certainly think he has got the hard-nosed approach to win the cup again and the Chiefs will take out the Stormers in the super final at the ‘tron’.

With Flo and I being so good at chasing and retrieving balls, we are lining up to be the ‘balldogs’, as having seen first paw how wide Flo can open her mouth (especially when it comes to my food bowl) she will have no problem getting an oval bone in her mouth.

Onto a round ball court. We think the Magic are, well, magic. Any team that can come from last place a few months ago to make the finals is, in our book, just the best.
